Very much enjoyed it! Not huge into jazz, but it was a great listen and very relaxing.

1. Very mild, easy listening jazz. 9 minutes, but didn't really feel like it. Kinda boring/kinda not. Feels like a right mood, right time type of listen. No lyrics, I think this is just a instrumental/trumpet album. 2. Continuation of first song. Building off of previous song. 3. Giving a little more film noir score vibes. 4. Nothing to say. All of these songs have been like nine minutes of smooth jazz. 5. I wouldn't be able to pick it out of the other songs. 5.9/10 Not for me, but I understand why people would listen to this. It also has the added benefit of zero lyrics, so it can stand the test of time without becoming problematic like the Aerosmith album I listened to before this.

Jazz still isn't my favourite genre, but I do quite like this. I feel like the whole band is just clicking really well, it's very foot-tappable. I think this is also the latest "ancient" sounding album of all the 50s and 60s albums that have come up on the list so far - there's something timeless about it

Easy to listen to. Not really engaged by it because a rebellious part of my brain insists that jazz is a trick that really good musicians are playing on the rest of us. But I can see myself getting over that and putting this on as background music. I understand how this is counted among the best jazz records.

No surprises, exactly what I expected pleasant but not amazing

190/1089 - Freddie Freeloader and So What shouldn't be next to each other track-wise. The melodic contour of the songs are too similar. Kinda boring and "atmospheric" to be honest, probably why it's the best selling jazz album and on this list. All Blues and Bill Evans are the best part of this album. Generally I'm a jazz fan but I really don't like a lot of the picks on this list for various reasons.

By no means an unpleasant listen, but not my kind of thing. 2.5/5 rounded up to 3/5

A classic I had listened to before. I like it but I also find the sharp saxophone kind of grating by the time I'm halfway through the album. Maybe if it was mixed a little differently I'd find it more pleasant.

Ah, another blue album! People call this the best jazz record of all time, which makes me think I really don't get jazz. Not that I dislike it -- I don't -- but I can't really differentiate it from the other jazz albums we had, which were also "fine". Chill. I think I'd like it better without the drums. And maybe... the jazz.

It was fine, but I just couldn't get into it - nothing to hold on to.

Jazz isn't really my thing but this is quite pleasant and chill. Apparently there was a lot of improvisation and very little rehearsal which makes it even more impressive that it sounds so nice. Flamenco sketches was the most laid back and I really liked it despite it being the only one from this album not in his ten most popular.

I’m not a big jazz listener but I found myself really enjoying this album playing in the background, but I don’t think I have the ear for the complexity of jazz at this time in my life.

Good jazz kinda zoned out on it

Lots of mixed feelings throughout this album. I think I normally love this kind of talented instrumental stuff, but this one was not hitting for me. Largely felt like Davis's trumpet and Coltrane's sax were not meshing until the very last song. For a jazz album, I was a little disappointed in the lack of detailed drum time. Still good music though.

I don't normally listen to instrumental "smooth" Jazz, but this one was solid to have play in the background. I like the mix of slower some slower songs and more upbeat ones. I know Miles Davis is a trumpet play, but I think some piano/drum solos to counter the trumpet/sax solos would have been cool.

It's weird, I can't say I was actively engaged in listening to this album, but I had it on my way to work on a rainy day and there was something about it that made for a really nice atmosphere.

Nice to have on in the background. I find that most jazz is quite random and all over the place (doesn’t adhere to the typical ‘rules’ of instrumental music) but this is rhythmic and pleasant to listen to.

This is a super influential album that I've never given a go. "So What," is a song I've heard covered by big artists like Jerry Garcia. Was cool to hear the original. Overall it was fairly enjoyable.

Man, I always want to love this album and I do - when the horn is blasting my ears into oblivion. If he switched up the annoying horn for the keys or something softer it would be so good. I feel like it is a joke that everyone else is in on but me.

This was so calming to revise to it really locked me in . Favourite part was all the sax riffs and stuff. Obvs wouldn’t just listen to it as a pass time but good for when I need to concentrate . Will keep it in mind . It was fun but like it’s not the type of music to go on a playlist

I enjoyed having on in the background, it was likeable. I wouldn't actively seek out though.

Pleasant and moseying. Clear talent all round and a real art and skill, but not grabbed in the same way as some music or wowed. Just a kind of ‘yeh, this is really nice and accomplished.’ Quite liked having 5 longer tracks to make up an album. Helpful to read the history too, to understand its place in time and relevance. I like the constant reemergence of the two notes “high-lowwww” in each song. Blue in Green moved me the most. (3.5)

What's not to like about Miles Davis? Super talented musician. Get background music for coding I found out today. For things that I listen to on a regular basis, I prefer vocals, but this was a nice chill album. Makes me want to drink whiskey in front of fire talking about books.

I've gotten a lot of instrumental albums since starting this. I feel like im not qualified to judge this album because of my recent lack of musical activity. I like the sound, and for a moment I almost wrote "doesnt sound like anything new" but then recognized that 66 years ago this likely was something groundbreaking.

6/10 Classic Jazz album. Mostly instrumental and boring to anybody who’s not a fan of jazz music. It is good and respectable with not a lot to hear. Personally, I love jazz—but I know people who don’t and they would despise this album. It’s primarily instrumental, with the horns taking the show and the other instruments serving as more of a plate for the brass. Even though I do love jazz, I’ll admit I got a little bored listening to this. All of the songs are long and kind of repetitive—but that’s most Jazz, so it’s understandable. I wouldn’t listen to this entire album again. Maybe individual songs, but probably not. Good study music!!!

I mean it’s cool but I’m not crazy about these instrumentals.

This is probably some high-grade jazz, daddio. Mostly wasted on me, but I mildly enjoyed it. Inoffensive, at least, which is saying something. Jazz never "moves me," per se, though. Ever.

Seminal album by Miles Davis. I think it is one of the most talked about records among other musicians, which only amplifies how important it is. The thing is, I can appreciate the genius, I don't really feel the music. The album is still much better than anything from the modal era, but it's just not my cup of tea.

Jazz albums have proved to be a nice alternative to my usual picks for working. This one was an easy listen

It was nice. A couple of long tracks (8-11 means each). Did not annoy me the way that super long rock tracks do. I’m probably not going to relished to this album, but I enjoyed it once through.

Jazz sets me on edge. I know it's considered by many to be the only true American art-form so I'm probably being un-patriotic when I say that I dislike it. But there is something about this album that resonates with me. I can't hear the trumpet on this album without evoking a dimly lit, smoke filled, prohibition era jazz club where everyone is dressed to the nines and swigging martinis. The sound is cloying, but it a genuine way- And yes, cringe alert*, I'm about to reference a James Baldwin novel when I say it reminds me of the sax player in "Another Country" when he's repeating "do you love me?" through his instrument over and over. *For some reason it feel pompous for white dudes to quote James Baldwin, IDK why...

Beautiful and stunning!

A little slow and sparse for my taste in Jazz (at least, as of 2/25). The highlights are Miles on the piano and Bill Evans/Wynton Kelly on the piano. My favorite song off of the record is "Freddie Freeloader," which has Kelly on the piano and is the most up-tempo song. Overall, solid enough but a little slow for me.

Nice, easy listening to this jazz album. Not typically cup of tea, and it's mostly just background music, but it was nevertheless a more pleasant experience than some of the electronica albums on here. Ought to give this album another more concentrated listen one day.

Talented beyond belief but just not my thing.

I love jazz so it’s hard to make it unlistenable for me but I did find the trumpet super shrill at a lot of points which I did not love. This definitely wasn’t my favorite jazz I’ve heard.

This is one of those albums where if you don't profess it to be an all time great, you are looked down about by musical snobbery. Well judge away because this is a good but not perfect album. Good in the background, relatively forgettable in the foreground, but in no way bad.

Okay jazz album. After awhile, I felt like it wasn't ending

I am a heretic but maybe I heard this too often being pulled out to be a milestone but to me it’s just „Nice“.

Oh yes, the early 2000s! A time when bands were exploding onto the scene with major record label deals that included massive distribution, marketing, and endless radio play on top 10 stations. You know exactly what I’m talking about, right? That’s right, INDIE ROCK! Or at least that’s what this generation of bands was labeled as. “Is This It” by The Strokes was definitely one of those albums. Back then, even though I saw through all the hype, I still thought this album was pretty solid on its own merits. However, relistening to it now, I realize that this generation of music either didn’t age that well or maybe I’m just burned out from it because I heard so much of it 20 years ago.

Not that much into jazz, it's always a bit too slow and meandering for my tastes but this one was nice and pretty enough, I understand why it has the reputation it has.

This would be really cool for cooking to or as background music for a nice dinner. Unfortunately I was driving for two hours and this isn’t really what you want on such occasions. It didn’t send me to sleep, but there wasn’t anything to really stir my interest. As jazz it’s half decent. I don’t know enough about jazz to understand how important this is. It has its place, but this isn’t one to come back to everyday for a week.

Good background music

Always find it hard to rate jazz, as I'm sure this is much better than I believe it to be, I just don't dig jazz music and I never choose to listen to it. If I was in a lift, or struggling to drift off to sleep, or perhaps in a jazz club with a nice drink and good company, I'd be more than happy to let some Miles Davis rinse over me, as he's very good indeed. But I'm only in these scenarios very rarely, sadly.

I'm not a jazz man. I gave it a couple of listens and whilst it did not make me cry or my ears bleed it did not move me. It was perfectly serviceable as background music whilst I worked - but not sure that's the greatest recommendation. Appreciate its a classic and I'm a basic bitch philistine but can only really give it a 3 as just did not get it. sorry.

i really enjoy listening to jazz instrumentals like this. i greatly prefer songs with vocals/lyrics, but something about jazz instrumentals just feels warm and fuzzy.

I know this is regarded as one of the best albums of all time, and potentially the best jazz album of all time. However, jazz has a ceiling for me and it can only be but so enjoyable. I liked listening to this in the background, but not sure I would ever throw it on again. 6/10 (3/5)

If this is the best Jazz has to offer, it might just not be for me. I do understand the appeal, but I just get bored. I much prefer Jazz influenced works — progressive bands that incorporate jazz influences. Or Cowboy Bebop type jazz. Typical modal jazz just bores the hell out of me. I wish I enjoyed it more. It’s fine. Pleasent for the background, but not enough to hold my attention as the main attraction.

Very pleasant

Kind Of Blue isn't the best jazz album out there but it's still a decent one. This one seems to greatly reduce the amount of songs from Birth Of The Cool to this and in exchange, makes the songs longer. I personally like this style more since it allows the songs to do a better job at sinking in as well as being able to mask the lack of differentiation in this album better. While i don't think that the songs here are as memorable as the ones in In A Silent Way, i do still think these songs are pretty decent and definitely are better than the ones in Birth Of The Cool. This album is definitely a good one but i feel it would get topped 10 years later. Best Song: So What Worst Song: Blue In Green

This is obviously a very-well arranged, jazz classic, but it's just not my kind of music, so I couldn't really get into it. I did enjoy the more mellow pieces, but not enough to rate it higher than a 3. No doubt these are some really talented musicians, though.

I think, given how universally lauded this album is, and given that I just thought it was pleasant to hear, I can definitely say that I don't really like or appreciate jazz.

Best Song: Blue in Green. Extremely laid back and relaxed. The bass is really the star here for me. Worst Song: There isn't one, everything kind of blurs into a somewhat familiar pastiche. Overall: Can an album be too smooth? It feels like it slips right out of my eardrums as I listen to it, bypassing my attention entirely. Pleasant and inoffensive in the background, certainly something that sets a mood, but not an album that stops you and confronts you with anything novel or particularly interesting.

Thus is a very famous jazz album, which everyone should hear at least once. This is the second time I've listened to it in my lifetime, it's really good, but not what I go out of my way to listen to on a daily basis. It would be perfect for a dinner party to host refined friends. The problem is I just don't know anyone who fits the bill, so listening to this again will have to stay a dream for the time being. I loved the pace, with its gentle , almost inaudible timpany, and melody of the those trumpets. It's a 3 star job that.

Again, I think I'm missing something. This was fine as far as jazz goes. I'm just not huge into Jazz. I can't think of a time where I would ever say, Let me put on Kind of Blue. I understand it's amazing, and that it's life changing. I just am not getting it.

I’m not mentally well rn, so I was excited to have some nice lyric-less jazz to buckle down to. Unfortunately the horns were a bit shrill for me. I feel bad because this is definitely the result of my mental state, but it’s just a 3 for me.

A pretty good jazz album.

Kind of blue? Well, I guess. I do hear a lot of blue notes in this, which is pretty much a given, since it's jazz. And it does invoke a certain sense of melancholy every now and then, which is generally associated with "the blues". And on the album cover the guy is wearing a piece of clothing that is kind of blue. But if I had to pick a color that describes this most closely, I'd have to say it's "Puce". That's the color of a blood engorged flea's stomach, in case you didn't know. Honest! Some describe it as a brownish purple color, which is relevant, because the sounds on this album invoke the same brain waves as purple and brown noise when they are played simultaneously (although the music on the album is much more melodic). This an ingenious approach to music! The brown noise is often used to help people sleep, while purple noise is more suited to calming tinnitus. So, this music lulls you into a relaxed state, meanwhile calming that eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee sound (that you had *just* managed to forget about but seeing that long string of the letter e has reminded you it is still present and louder than ever. Sorry about that). If you listen to this album all the way through (which I must confess I have not, because I find it pretty boring), you'll see what I mean. You'll be asleep and will have forgotten about the you-know-what, which if I mention it will come screaming back at full volume, *especially* if you are asleep. Which I hope you're not at this point - I'd find it somewhat offensive that you fell asleep while reading this. So anyway, let's agree to call this "Kind of Puce" instead, ok?

Chill and cool style jazz

This seems VERY popular. Can't say it did it for me. I didn't *hate* it, but nor was it the greatest thing since I filled my ears with sliced bread.

A nice and simple album with 5 songs, but each was around 10 minutes long (apart from one that was 5 minutes). Overall, nice jazzy experience, so I am happy with this album. I would prefer to have this in the background, instead of actively listening to it, but it was nice.

This is the music I can listen to when I'm filled with joy. This is the music I can listen to when I don't want to listen to music. This is the music I can listen to.... Favourite piece: All Blues

from a musicianship standpoint, you do not get better than this. miles, trane, cannonball, and evans all on the same record should rightfully be praised. some of the greatest to ever do it. and as such, the musicianship on this is incredible. my problem with this album is purely a me thing - i really don't like cool jazz. i much prefer miles' bebop stuff. cool jazz just doesn't do it for me. i, quite frankly, find it a bit boring. so despite the classic songs, the incredible playing, and the all-timer status, i actually really didn't enjoy myself listening to this a whole lot. once again, i admit, this is fully a me thing. if you love this, go off kings. it's just not for me.

I like this more than other Miles Davis albums that I’ve heard. This one is less experimental and freeform. Much more accessible to me.

Definitely some high quality music but not really my style

Nice background jazz, was quite straightforward considering it was Miles Davis and John Coltrane, was expecting it to be a lot stranger. Again, would be great live and was enjoyable to listen to but it's hard to recommend this over any other straightforward jazz album.

This is the only jazz album I had listened to before we started this list... Listened to it on a list of the 100 greatest albums of all time so I know it is highly regarded. On both occasions that I've heard this album I've been in London coincidentally! Does make wandering around a busy London more calming. I for me it's nice background music, nothing more. I wouldn't choose to listen to it. Sure that makes me ignorant.... Just not that into jazz, although this is more tolerable than most we've had 3

I'm not a frequent listener of jazz. I don't think I get it and this album proves that. Very talented. Fantastic sound. I just don't get it enough.

With jazz, I really struggle to rate. I have developed a bit of a binary system Do I hate listening to this right now? Can I tolerate it? If it's yes to the first, I'll give it a 2 because I'm not an idiot. I can tell if something is good so not a 1 star, although I'd like to shove my fingers in my ears and scream to block it out. If it's the latter, I'll give it a 3 because it's a massive achievement for a bit of jazz to just not piss me off. I feel pretty awful contributing to a pool of reviews with such an arbitrary system but it's all I have. This album didn't make me mad. So 3 stars. Well done Miles.

A good Miles Davis album. "So What" is the standout, but I'm never drawn to put this on. It's music to have on whilst drinking Martinis outdoors on a hot sunny day, whilst chatting with intellectual friends. It's just a bit too long and all a bit too similar.

I have heard many of these before and it was pleasant but not my style of music

I understand that this is a great record for it's genre and maybe music in general... But it partially gets a bit annoying while listening to it.

Well, this feels like a big one. Jazz has not been high up on my list, and this confirms that I do not appreciate the fine touches of the craft. Oh well. 6/10

I really like this album. I was never a big jazz fan but a few years ago I began to take an interest and wondered if I was missing something. I read that Miles Davis was a good place to start my jazz journey and his must have album was Kind of Blue. I streamed the album initially but loved the album so much that I have since bought it. I need to be in the mood to listen to it and mostly this tends to be in bed before dropping off to sleep. I still find a lot of jazz a challenge to get into but intend to persevere. My eldest brother who was partly responsible for my overall love of music in general, was a big jazz fan and I have inherited all his vintage jazz vinyl albums. Kind of Blue is a good touch stone to compare other jazz albums. The first track So What is my favourite. Not an expert but I think this follows the classic jazz form with the initial rhythm eventually returning at the end but in between little snatches tempt and tease the listener so that when the the track eventually resolves itself it comes as a relief. So not an easy listen but if you are more than a casual listener gives immense satisfaction.

Another PTSD album, but this time from having to analyse the chart of so what for music language studies. But still a classic jazz album.

Solid 3 for me. I don’t love jazz, but I think the only reason I didn’t like this was the saxophone parts were obnoxious. Guess that’s jazz tho! Trumpet parts were great and as that is miles Davis, I’ll give him credit. If he was the saxophonist, it’d be a 1 for Ruining good music.

Some parts are really good, like the main motif of So What and All Blues, but I found myself losing interest during some solos.

6/10 This is so outside my experience. I've never just sat down and listened to Miles Davis before. My first impression is that this is hard to listen to and do other things, which isn't bad. I don't ordinarily engage with music like that is all. That being said, it isn't anything I'd seek out on my own, and I don't feel compelled to listen again. 2/26/2024

Jazz

Miles Davis....again? This is the 3rd Miles Davis album I have reviewed. I actually listened to this one quite extensively in my "History of American Jazz" course that I took back in college. A good listen.

One of the most iconic jazz albums. Love “So What”. Not the kind of music I want a constant diet of, as it requires a ton of effort above shoulders and on a Friday I am ready for some music that works from waist down. Every musician needs to take their vitamins once in awhile.

This sort of jazz is not my thing but I can appreciate it for what it is. It's not the sort of thing I'd choose to actively listen to but I wouldn't mind having it on in the background now and then.

Groovy, smooth jazz. This album is what I picture jazz to be. I also picture it being the soundtrack to every late 70’s early 80’s movie as well. I’m sure this is much more intricate but it just has that feel. It’s a rebound album but I don’t really find it something that I would choose to listen to. 3/5

I enjoyed this, but it always faded into the background and never actively grabbed me.

Might be a situation where, if I was a musician, I might appreciate this more. I could totally envision listening again (great, chill music for driving, sewing, whatever) but might not explicitly go out of my way to pull this up.

Although Ionly listened to a of couple songs, the ambience created by 'Blue In Green' and 'So What' was not one I expected to overly enjoy. Now do I see myself throwing this kind of music on regularly, no but for dinner parties or a relaxing evening, it's perfect.

Music was carried. Kind of like your own a long train track, the tempo stays steady but the view is always a little different sometimes vastly different. However jazz just really isn’t for me despite this being a classic. Could not pay attention to notice that a song had changed. Could not find melodies either.

I like the saxophone and trumpet. It’s chill jazz. I like how there’s one instrument leading the way. It’s more of an occasional listen for me. I’m hoping for a more rich complex sound. I love vinyl

I listen to some jazz and know Miles Davis is a classic but not actually familiar. So What is making me feel stressed. I enjoyed Freddie Freeloader way more. This is the vibe I like. Chill , background, jazz. Also-fun name. It did get back into crazy sax for a bit though. But that's jazz. Blue in Green opens and closes with piano which is fun. I also believe the opening is a muted trumpet , which is fun. Overall good background music. Not my favorite jazz but very talented musician. I enjoyed the album but listening straight did lose me after a while

This music is fine to listen but none of it sticks at all. I started a third listen and don't remember any of these tunes. I never noticed that the album ended and started playing other stuff. These dudes are obviously great at playing their instruments but I just don't have any jazz knowledge.

No hay mucho para decir la verdad, no creo que la obra este hecha ni para mi ni para gente de mi generacion, juzgarlo sin entender lo que significa el jazz y el trasfondo que lleva siento que es desprestigiarlo un poco. musicalmente es solido, tiene el tipico caos ordenado que da este tipo de musica, es incluso entretenido de escuchar en segundo plano, ta bien. participa John Coltrane, tipazo [notas post investigacion]: el disco no sigue ninguna estructura de acordes, si no que se basa en formas modales, y este album le dio paso a un nuevo tipo de jazz, el JAZZ MODAL. se grabo en 2 sesiones, y esta improvisado mas del 90%

3.5 No estoy diciendo que sea un mal disco ni mediocre ni nada parecido, pero... no lo entendí. Tengo un problema con el jazz clásico y la verdad no entiendo el disco con las pocas escuchas que tuve Pero si puedo decir que tiene melodias y solos muy interesantes ademas de un clima espectacular de principio a fin Lo voy a seguir escuchando y eso seguramente cambie mi puntaje pero hoy es ese

Good background music

Not a big jazz/blues person but Miles has something.

Jazz. I like jazz. But it's more of a background jazz for me. I guess I prefer more lively jazz music.

The music is fine, but this style of jazz is not really all that engaging to me. I've always wondered why, and I think I finally realized it's because of the group dynamic (or lack thereof). This album is primarily a collection of very talented soloists performing in immediate succession under the pretense of a collection of songs. Each songs starts as an ensemble piece, that gives way around the 1m mark to a medley of spotlight swapping solo showcases. I'm amazed at the patience of the rhythm section, as they play along while everyone else gets to do whatever they want.

Again jazz. I prefer this one than John Coltrane, but still not my...jazz

I wish I was the kind of person who "gets" jazz. But I'm not. I'm sure its objectively a great album and I'm glad I've now listened to it. Probably won't again though.

Chill, very jazzy obv. Subdued trumpet. Expensive hotel bar type beat. Sax coming in on Freddie was nice. Fav was prob Freddie, maybe blue in green.

Jazz is not my favorite, but great vibes. Songs blend together although feels repetitive to my uncultured ears.

This worked for a Sunday, and made the baby nod off. Jazz like this does all blur together though. Pleasant with talent shining, but not very memorable and very homogenous. Would not return to it.

This would be a 5 in a live setting I’m sure. Through the stereo I find it hard to stay engaged. The players are all excellent. Jazz, I disappoint you. I know. But go away.

Probably the only jazz album I could name, but not my favourite from this list. Obviously I'm too much of a musical heathen to know why it's supposed to be good, one just enjoyed others more 🤷‍♀️

The opening track helped me get over the 'Miles is overrated' thinking. I know it better than I'd have predicted. Amazing musicians.
