Insta 5 and a great weekender! I loved listening. It’s amazing how deep in my brain some of these solos are. They’re omnipresent, they’re canonical. I listened to this album a ton in college and we had a bunch of practice analyzing some of the solos. Truly one of a kind. 5/5

I was told if I don't like this album, then I just don't like jazz. Well, it was nice, relaxing music for my drive home. I just wasn't blown away by it. I prefer more upbeat jazz like the Hugh Masekela I had earlier in the list.

As usual I can just not appreciate this type if Jazz, too smooth for me. Saw Comet Is Coming on festival this weekend, that type of wild jazz is more my thing. Consider this easy listening, sorry for insulting Miles lovers.

it feels wrong that we can only rate this album in full integers as that's a bit disrespectful to this album that has been carefully curated to not allow you to feel at ease. i also admire the vision that it took to write two tracks and play them both at the same time.

Lots of doodlydoots here. So many in fact that there are only 5 songs in this whole album. It's good. But for me. But good.

Now, I know this is a classic and well deserved to be in the list. But, are we all just pretending to like Jazz? I mean, it’s inoffensive enough to not bother me, but do I get excited listening to it? Not really I’m afraid. It’s ok, not better than that and not worse.

Oh me oh my. The greatest of all time. We’ve had another Miles record on this list so far, and I think I said something along the lines of if Miles Davis was the only musician to ever exist, I’d be okay with that. If this was the only album to ever exist, it would be enough. The second note he plays on the opener, So What, and the imperfection of that octave drop just perfectly encapsulates everything I love about music.

Lately I have been getting a little more into jazz, so this came at a great time! I knew So What ahead of time, it's the standout song for me on this album.

The very first Jazz album I listened too and brought on vinyl. Such a great collection of exceptional artists.

Jazz is a curious genre for me. Many times it doesn’t have much of an impact on me but every once and a while something just comes across as so elegant and gorgeous that it feels like I could listen to it on repeat for the rest of my life. Kind Of Blue gives me that sensation. Everything about it oozes class and creating a free flowing sound with little structure but a fantastic sense of beauty. 10/10

Definitely not my thing...I could see myself listening to this if I were sitting in the corner in a dark smoking bar, drinking whiskey, and being heartbroken. Other than that...this just sounds like "alcohol in a park bench" to me

Eh, it was ok. I can appreciate that Miles Davis is a legend in the jazz trumpet scene, but the album was way too melancholy for me. The tracks were very long and drawn out as well which didn't help grab me at all. Best: Blue In Green Worst: All Blues

No tengo experiencia en el genero, pero es el segundo álbum de Jazz que me sale y es una mejora más que considerable. Personalmente, no puedo apreciarlo muy bien, supongo que será cosa de escucharlo más o de probar más álbumes parecidos para tener bien en claro si verdaderamente es tan bueno como dicen. Claramente, es más que perfecto para tenerlo de fondo. Me parece que el genero se presta mucho para ello y esta no es la excepción. Por último, no se muy bien cómo calificarlo, pero, hasta ahora, cada que eh calificado mediocremente a un álbum tan aclamado, siempre me termina gustando más con el tiempo y me arrepiento de no haberle dado más estrellas, por lo que no me arriesgaré esta vez y confío en que me gustará más con el tiempo

An all-star cast backs up Miles Davis on this hour plus of extraordinary quality. It is more refined than some of his earlier improvisational stuff and a definite must have for anyone that likes the genre. And a must listen for any one that's never heard it.

Great Jazz album! Beautiful however I don't feel qualified to judge the albums quality and Jazz isn't something I generally listen to as anything but background music

I can’t understand how anyone has anything bad to say about this album. You won’t find a better jazz record even if you dug through the indie jazz bargain bin. This album remains both the greatest jazz album of all time, and the best album to get into jazz. The story goes that the legendary lineup for this album laid everything down in one take, only working off Davis’ loose direction and lead sheets. While that rumour has since been dispelled (it actually took two days and several takes), the raw skill of such a lineup made the rumour completely believable. And what a lineup it was. Both Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane trade saxophone solos, joined by Davis’ soaring muted trumpet. Underneath the trio is supported by the rhythm section of pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer James Cobb, with Evans being replaced on some tracks by Wynton Kelly. The group improvises extremely well, capturing the true essence of jazz: its spontaneity. Even if it wasn’t all done in one take, they still laid down some of the greatest jazz ever put to wax. Standout Songs: “So What” “Freddie Freeloader” “Blue in Green” “All Blues” “Flamenco Sketches”

So good it reminds me of my dad, he used to listen to this album all the time. All of the songs are so memorable, and I feel like its sometime I will come to see as more complex as time goes on.

Beautiful album, one of my favorite jazz albums... Which means it's a solid 4 leaning 4.5! Sorry, I just don't get the urge to listen to jazz all that regularly, so chalk this rating up to my understanding/appreciation of this type of music, not to the music itself (which is still really good even to a jazz noob like myself, just not where I need something to be for me to rate it a 5). Certainly one that belongs on the list!

1. So What - a classic melody that appears in many pop culture media. really nice to listen to and would sound amazing on vinyl. Trumpets at the 5 minute mark really stole the show for me. 2. Freddie Freeloader - reminds me of a song that would be playing at a jazz bar. very low key but did very little to evoke an emotional response 3. Blue in Green - the mesh of piano and trumpet was a good listen. 4. All Blues - reminds me of a song they would use in lupin to show a sly or sneaky individual going through their day. really picks up in the middle. the rhythm of the drums amplifies the song as the day moves on 5. Flamenco Sketches - The sorrow i feel while listening to this song is conveyed very well. this song was interesting enough to the point where i went and dug up additional information to learn that this was essentially 5 individual playing out their solos. Awesome song to discover

"Blue in Green" is indeed blue. Very blue, in fact. Mind-blowing, transcedental experience inducing blue. The rest... well, the rest is just kind of blue.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not THE greatest Jazz album ever made. But it is still a straight-up masterpiece that everyone should listen to at least once.

This is and will always be one of my favorite records of all time. Jazz at its absolute peak right here.

It's probably worthy of 5 stars but I'm feeling a bit mean today.

A very catchy hook-laden jazz album. Very engaging and accessible. Every musician shines. Even after all these years I still don't really know what \"modal\" means in this context, but the album is a winner for any mood, time of day, or social function. Definitely a 5. I can only imagine how ultra cool it would be to drop the stylus on the vinyl version!

Is this too intellectual an album for me? Well, many jazzicos would have you think that. But tell you what, pop it on in secret, no preconceptions, just sit back and chill.

I like 'So What' so far. Funny how the first album it generated for me was one of the few I kind of knew already but I haven't properly listened to it before. Halfway through 'So What' and I appreciate the length of this song, it feels like the instruments have time to explore That was a fun chill piece but still engaging , next one, Freddie Freeloader! I like when the instruments like fade temporarily to give different ones time to breathe on their own Maybe I'm too much of a dunce to appreciate the ornamentation and techniques and subtle changes in the piece but it is getting repetitive but still solid I'm enjoying this more longing, emptier 'Blue in Green', stands out more compared to the last 2 songs. I liked the end of 'Blue in Green' 'All Blues' has another fascinating opening with the piano I'm noticing that the 1st song and now this one have lyrics on Spotify but unless I missed or forgot I didn't hear any 'All Blues' has this constant up and down thing that seems to swap between accompaniment and melody 'Flamenco Sketches' is more piano oriented and calmer and is winding down nicely un triumphant ending I like it First impressions after listening to the whole thing: I can definitely see why this is regarded as one of the best albums of all time! Works as both perfect background music yet draws you in time and time again. I felt as if some parts were mildly repetitive, specifically in 'All Blues' and 'Freddie Freeloader', but its still an enjoyable experience. I think im too impatient to truly appreciate it, but I would listen to this again. Favourite Track - Blue in Green 8/10

Moody and fantastic

I lived and breathed this album for a few weeks while I read Ashley Kahn's book on this album. I recommend it if you've enjoyed listening to it, its a great exploration of the album - before, its conception, and after. In case anyone reads this review and nothing else about the album I'll share Bill Evans' (pianist) line notes for it: "There is a Japanese visual art in which the artist is forced to be spontaneous. He must paint on a thin stretched parchment with a special brush and black water paint in such a way that an unnatural or interrupted stroke will destroy the line or break through the parchment. Erasures or changes are impossible. These artists must practice a particular discipline, that of allowing the idea to express itself in communication with their hands in such a direct way that deliberation cannot interfere. The resulting pictures lack the complex composition and textures of ordinary painting, but it is said that those who see well find something captured that escapes explanation. This conviction that direct deed is the most meaningful reflections, I believe, has prompted the evolution of the extremely severe and unique disciplines of the jazz or improvising musician."

nice. earlier only listened to blue in green and liked it a lot. im not a huge fan of jazz, but this album was very pleasant.

Wow! This is great! I'm not sure what it is that elevates it above the previous Miles Davis albums on the list, but I really like it. Perhaps it's because it's a more balanced album, with the focus not solely on Davis' trumpet. Every instrument is performed with incredible skill and character. The record is also beautifully paced, starting with a sense of urgency, but relaxing into a very chilled and contemplative atmosphere by the end. A jazz masterpiece. I could listen to this all day. There's something effortlessly cool and graceful to this that is hard to find elsewhere. The bass just stumbles and trips all over the place without ever losing grace.

Not my kind of music, anyway woderfull

The spirit of jazz has clearly blessed me, as I’ve been generated another Miles Davis album today making it two in a row. I’ll certainly take that and am happy to listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: So What This time, similar to In A Silent Way, we only have a few songs on the album but they are extra long. This is in contrast with Birth Of The Cool yesterday which had shorter, more traditional length songs. Once again, the music is fantastic, if perhaps somewhat more morose at times. It’s quite amazing to hear all the different emotions Miles Davis is able to express through his trumpet, and it’s very clear why he is considered one of the greats. My only criticism might be due to being a millennial - if songs are too long my mind can wonder a little. Overall, another fantastic album.

Wasn't really feeling it when this popped up this morning but I gave it a go. I'm glad I did as it's really smooth, dense and chill. I can't understand how anyone can not like this?

The greatest jazz album of all time.

Kind of a masterpiece, right? There's not much that I can say about this record that hasn't been said a thousand times before. What a legendary ensemble of musicians. What a game changer (even though Davis' previous LP, *Milestones*, had already opened the gates that led towards 'modal jazz'). And what an amazing collection of tracks. I could listen to the waves "All Blues" so aptly evoke for hours. Those waves are waves of bliss, and *Kind of Blue* is the sort of record you can never get tired of. Five stars, obviously. Dimery's list when it comes to jazz albums is far from perfect, by the way (key LPs usually singled out by jazz fans are missing from it--LPs by Mingus, Coltrane, Blakey, Adderley, Silver, Monk, Roach, Coleman, Chambers, Dolphy, Nina Simone and even Davis himself...). But *Kind of Blue* is in there, at least (as is Coltrane's *A Love Supreme*). Had it not, *no one* would have taken this list very seriously, and this *for any music genre*. That's how important this record is. God damn it Miles Davis! Does this place look like a fucking coffee shop? What do you mean "Kind Of Blue"? Is this supposed to be "blue" as in "sad"? Am I supposed to feel any emotion while listening to this? Because the only thing I'm thinking about while listening to this is "That guy sure loves to blow into that saxophone" and also "Where's my damn coffee". I used to think that I hate jazz, but then I got into people like Charles Mingus and Frank Zappa (thanks to this site!), and that's when I realized that jazz is a huge genre full of great music, and that I just hate this specific subgenre of boring elevator music made by a random music generator AI that Miles Davis falls into. Throw in some god damn flamenco guitars like a real man, Miles. You will never convince me that this is one of the greatest artistic statements of the 20th century or whatever. Call me ignorant. More like "Kind of Shit", bozo! This is a Charles Mingus household! Next album!

PERFECTION

Classic. Everyone should open this.

Davis, Coltrane, Cannonball, and Bill Evans come together to create quite possibly the most famous jazz record of all time. A collaborative attempt at establishing modal jazz, we have here a truly accessible album. Losing the repetitive nature of jazz standards or pretentiousness of bebop or swing, Kind of Blue is full of simple yet interesting hooks and smooth catchy melodies to attract all audiences and fit both mellow and energetic vibes. Not only did it change jazz as a whole, but it also changed its reputation to be appreciated by all. Despite only being 5 tracks, deep care and attention are put into each second. Their pop-like structures are engaging and justify their extensive lengths. Everyone is doing their own thing, giving us plenty to pay attention to and increasing replayability. But by maintaining restraint, they all come together to create coherent established pieces that never seem out of place. I could always find something new to appreciate with each listen. For example, Bill Evans tends to stand out for his hazy, emotional impressionist piano style, characterizing the most famous track here "Blue in Green". And despite being produced in 1959, this is among one of the best-sounding albums I've heard from the era. Everyone is clear and smooth during both its quiet and crowded moments.

I love the title of this album, Kind Of Blue. To me that shows the tenderness and measured playing throughout the album. It’s not fully Blue, just Kind Of. Blue in Green is my favorite piece, and I love the depth of emotion that’s created through soft and small moments. Honestly, this album has just shown to me that little doesn't have to be the antithesis of big, but can be the precursor to it. Favorites: Blue in Green, All Blues, Flamenco Sketches, So What

Just as good as every one said. All 5 songs are masterpieces and put in the right place. Great for both deep concentrated listening and relaxing background music. The production still sounds brilliant. I can't recommend this album enough. An essential record.

Nice to know that Miles Davis can actually create good music (It feels horrible to say something like this about a jazz legend, but here we are). Unlike his other albums, Kind Of Blue at least has more layers and is more dynamic. The horns and keys playing with one another sounds really pleasing on several sections. The two work well together and complement each other, with neither instrument overshadowing its partner. All that being said though, if this is the gold standard for jazz music, then for someone like me who generally doesn't enjoy the genre it doesn't really paint a good picture of its highs. It's still background music, at the end of the day. There are probably better examples of jazz for casual listeners, which are more structured and I don't know, more energetic? Because this still ain't it, chief.

Just not for me. Would I like to sit on a dim room with a few in an audience and watch this live? Most definitely but the effect just doesn’t work the same for this type of music whilst wearing headphones in my pyjamas I can’t give it one star because I appreciate the sounds and I do picture a scene when I listen to it so that counts for something

Ryan would insist that I mention that this album is influential, so getting that our of the way. Fantastic interplay, a musical premonition of the truly crazy shit he would do a decade later (my favorite stuff) A chill affair...not sure if he was back on heroin for this or not.

Den helt gode jazz, lækre toner

Yet another great jazz album from one of the greats. Like all the other jazz albums, I do get tired of it after about 30-40 minutes but it’s all still good. This one even made me want to go back and try to listen to bitches brew again (still wasn’t a huge fan, but it was a little better)

A perfect jazz album. Great tunes for each song and then the solos are wonderful.

The masterpiece: one of the most influential albums in history.

Smooth and sophisticated. I could see myself really appreciating this on a gloomy day, wrapped up warm with a hot drink, listening to this either through some far better headphones than I currently have, or listening to it on vinyl. I certainly have to be in a particular mood or scenario to really appreciate this, but it's just some lovely and timeless jazz.

Perhaps the greatest Jazz album of time. Just an absolute joy to listen to these guys play, for me it's the different styles of Coltrane and Cannonball. So What is just gorgeous with Miles warming us up with his solo then Coltrane coming in on the left with his more aggressive hard bop style then cannonball in the right channel following up with a more smooth solo then finished off with Evans on piano. The rest of the album is just as brilliant. Anyone who doesn't rate this higher than 4 stars is clinically deaf.

Ooh... Just my favourite jazz album of all time. Thinking about the talent concentrating at that recording studio alone blows my mind. For decades now, this has been an album I kept coming back to again and again, always discovering new facades I wasn't aware of before (it helps that the album has been released under different speeds and such, again, and again).

Kind of Boo

I mean, it is the blue print. There’s a reason why every jazz album since sounds like it’s copying the formula. It doesn’t disappoint.

I went into this album blind, although as soon as the first song started, I instantly recognised it. The album is a beautiful exercise in modal improvisation. The first song sets the album up with a lovely Dorian centered composition. 'Blue in Green' is even more impressive. It carries an extremely 'cool' sound to it whilst weaving in-between different modes. Probably the highlight of the album. The last song plays around with Phrygian. I had a great time trying to play along with this song. The melodic instruments shine in this song whilst the rhythm section sets a very certain mood. An interesting thing with this album is that even with the modal brilliance shining through in these tracks, the twelve bar blues format is very prominent in the songwriting. This stuck out to me as an example of having simplicity in song structure whilst showing colorful melodic and harmonic qualities. What a great album. This is an instant 5 for me. The evocative tones, groove for days, and phenominal orchestration are just to die for. So What has these little jaunts into different key centers, like trying on different coats at a store. Flamenco Sketches is a song with so much internal story telling it is impossible to ignore. This worst part is that the album ends. Bill Evans on the piano for most of the recording is such a treat.

A great jazz album and an excellently invigorating but calming listen while working today. I will say that I wasn't bowled over by any one element of this LP (as its reputation would suggest), but again it was a solid listen and I'll likely be returning in the future.

I'll gladly listen to this album again. I'm not a big Miles Davis fan but I love Coltrane, Adderley, Evans, Cobb, and of course the bassist, Paul Chambers. Wynton Kelly on piano does a nice job on "Freddie the Freeloader" but Bill Evans is the comp chord king and his solos just flow like water. I love the conversations between the two saxophonists and Miles' trumpet. No question; this album belongs on this list even if you don't like or understand jazz. This is a master class in cool jazz.

Music that should be on that Golden Record they sent to space on one of the Voyager missions to communicate what humans are to aliens. That doesnt mean I would want to listen to it everyday or say it is my favorite, but you can tell that it is good and should be heard (especially by aliens).

Listened while working — this music is timeless. Hard to believe it's from 1959 and still sounds so cool. Miles' trumpet is one thing, but Coltrane's sax just rips through the mix when he's playing. And then there's Cannonball Adderley, which is about the coolest name you can have. The bass also drew me in. I'm not sure what it'll take to get a 5 from me on a jazz album, I guess I'm waiting to find out. But this is excellent .

The rare album that is a commercial favorite and also beloved by aficionados. It's great as background music but also holds up to intense scrutiny. Everyone is in top form here and many of these compositions became standards. Plus, there's the whole modal jazz thing, which is fascinating if you care but beside the point if you don't. At the end of the day, this is beautiful music, well written, wonderfully played, and the perfect soundtrack for a rainy day or a cozy Sunday morning. One of the problems with albums that get dubbed as "the greatest" (like this one) is that it puts undo pressure on that album that the artists never intended. Miles was always trying new things, but it's not like he set out to create what would become the bestselling jazz album of all time. And labeling something as "the greatest" can't help but affect newcomers' attitudes towards that music. They might listen to this and not love it and then think, "Well, I didn't love the best jazz album ever, so I guess jazz isn't for me." Suffice it to say that there are many kinds of jazz, just like there are many kinds of rock and hip-hop, and just because Kind of Blue didn't wow you, doesn't mean something else won't. This was definitely a gateway album for me, but it might not be for you. The 20th Century gave us a ton of horrors, but it also gave us The Beatles and Miles Davis, so overall, a thumb's up.

Can't say I'm a listener of much free jazz but this album is probably the best introduction you could give someone to bring them into the fold. It keeps rhythm while bringing in a freestyle virtuosity that impresses rather than alienates. It holds together well as an album, too.

If I would find a way to be speechless when it comes to describing an album, I would be. But I can't. I can see why this is the most heralded album in the history of music, not just of its genre. An essential peak of a monumental career, with players as essential as the music contained who would go on to make legendary albums in their own right. No wonder why Miles wouldn't make diminishing returns of this sound for eternity, for he had new terrain to roam and bigger fish to fry. 1959, what an incredible year.

The sax was a little grating to my ears on the first track, but otherwise this was very enjoyable.

I got really lucky and got to listen to this on a rainy morning at the beginning of fall. Absolutely beautiful. This kind of jazz has a soft space in my heart from growing up in Pittsburgh and watching Mr. Rogers. I'm verklempt just thinking about it.

This is a desert island album for me. I have listened to it many many times and will continue to do so. It's THE quintessential jazz album. Can it even be topped?

A perfectly balanced record. Miles may have downplayed this in later years because he had to move on and continue to innovate, but this is a thing of beauty.

My first experience with this release. It was like a hot cup of coffee on a cool fall morning. It was pure, smooth syncopation. I loved it.

4.5 This is often considered the best jazz album of all time. This is where I was recommend to start my jazz journey by a customer named Marty and I did. There are so many incredibly iconic players on this record that it’s basically the Avengers of jazz and they’re all at the top of their game. I admit that I had to listen to this one a few times to finally start to enjoy it. But once it clicked it clicked. There are moments of tenderness, but also the faster almost Ed , Edd n Eddy style sound. Every time I listen I like to try and zero in on a different player and how they’re fighting for the limelight at any given moment. It’s a different album every time I listen based on my mood. I still have a lot to learn from this one but I can safely say I get why people like it so much. Favorites include: So What, Freddie Freeloader, All Blues, Flamenco Sketches

3 Alright, this is one I've been waiting for. Having never heard the album, I've seen it ranked consistently among the best albums of all-time (and it's always one of the top comments on any "Best Album of All Time" Reddit threads). And... it's a jazz album. It's a good listen, but I still feel like I couldn't tell you what separates this from Bill Evans or Hugh Masekela. This list has done a good job of expanding my knowledge of jazz, but I feel like I'm still waiting for something to "click" and I finally understand the genre. Unfortunately, I think I may just have to accept jazz while never be a favorite of mine. I've yet to find any of it less than pretty good, but not sure it could ever cross the barrier of being a favorite.

This is an album that brought me into the pantheon of jazz music, classic and beautiful

2/5 This is the first jazz album I've ever listened to and it must be an acquired taste, because I really didn't enjoy it. Jarring and anxiety inducing. I feel bad giving it two stars, but I hope that later on I can appreciate it for what it is and give it a higher rating that I'm sure it deserves.
