Reviews (page 10 of 14)
Having listened to it before because of the hype, I didn't recall really liking it that much. But I must admit this time around that I actually enjoyed it. I much prefer "smooth jazz" to what I would call "real jazz", but this is up there in the pantheon of jazz albums that must be listened to.
Smooth jazz 😩
A bit like eating greens, I can appreciate the qualities but I'm rarely in the mood for a full meal of that. My loss. Really enjoyed taking the time to listen to this whole record.
Having never listened to a full Miles Davis album this didn't disappoint. If you were asked what a Miles Davis then this would be a perfect example.
jazz jazz jazz jazz jazz (: music with no words 🖤🖤🖤 there’s a very specific style of saxophone playing in this that i have mixed feeling about. i was definitely tripping the entire time this played and they sounded way too close a lot.
Effortlessly brilliant. How is an album made in 1959 still so modern sounding and so relevant? Incredible. Totally timeless 4.9
I guess I don’t really feel the apeal that so many others do, or why this is a must own album. Its vibe is that of a casual dinner party, or perhaps making some drinks and dancing along to the soft Jazz. His Trumpet playing is of course a high magnitude of musicianship and the sax, drum accompaniment are on par with his execution. The whole this is wonderful to listen to, but not my consistent cup of tea. Certainly that once in awhile treat.
Very good
que belleza una lástima que me recuerde a mi viejo 8.5/10
Very good. Liked it a lot. Was nice background music to play League to
So melodic and all the instrumentals were insane. I got lost in thought for a while
good jazz :)
9/13/2023 - Miles Davis, Kind of Blue (1959) 1. So What - can already tell I’m going to like it - very nice, smooth jazz 2. Freddie Freeloader 3. Blue in Green 4. All Blues 5. Flamenco Sketches Jesus, his 33rd album. John Coltrane plays sax on it.
An impressive album, a triumph of jazz, and surely one of the most incredible albums that had ever been released by anyone up to that point.
Very chill background music, love it!
Great record. I think it’s my favourite Miles Davis record now. Just so smooth and soothing
Excellent. Very Cool indeed
det är jazz
There's a lot of emotions going off here. As with all jazz, its best listened to late afternoon. The space between the music is just as important as what you can hear. I often want more soul from the jazz I listen to. Kind of Blue achieves this. Timeless.
Another album that's really nice to have on in the background, I liked and 'got' this more than Bitches Brew, I should probably come back to both at some point. Davis's work is top tier trumpet & jazz, though sometimes it's easy to forget that his style of jazz was something new. BT - Blue In Green (the piano section is so good) - All Blues - Flamenco Sketches
I think Kind of Blue is Kind of Amazing!
No on tämä hyvä! Iskee sellaiseen itselle sopivaan soundiin just eikä melkeen! 4/5
Kaunista ja miellyttävää. Bitches Brew säväyttää enemmän, mutta on tämä kakkossuosikki Davisiltä.
Whilst it didn't grab me for the entirety, there are some seriously beautiful passages of music here. For me, this oscillated between exactly what my 15-year-old self thought of when someone says "Jazz", and transcending to some of the most delicious sax and keys passages I've had the pleasure of hearing. Fav Track: Flamenco Sketches Strong 3.5/5
A monument of an album featuring a who's who of jazz musicians. Simply a pleasure and a joy to listen through. Wonderfully dynamic and polished playing, and melodies that stick in your skin. Four and a half. Fave track: Blue in Green
Bens a bot! This album fucking slapped. Looking to add to my vinyl collection
I am not big jazz fan but I really enjoyed this album. Very versatile. A real classic. Smooth Sunday 🎵🎧✌️
Very good. But at the risk of angering every jazz fan ever, I think Cannonball Adderley was even better when leading his own band.
I like electric Miles better, but this is great.
Just don't really like Jazz, but it is good
Heel aangenaam jazzalbum
Delightful
one of the greats! def a top 10 jazz album
Good music. Maybe I don’t know a lot about jazz but I can’t believe that “Kind Of Blue” is the best album in jazz. What was before this album?
This one was def better than the last one but still just okay to me. I mean good jazz I guess. 3.5 rounded
Incredibly random that I’ve listened to this multiple times in the last week before this popped up because of a ChatGPT reco.. Amazing album for relaxing, reading or anytime I want a smooth atmosphere.
a pleasant listen from start to finish and it sounds amazing
reminds me a bit of alexandre desplat's the shape of water, a fave movie
Incredible though interestingly not my #1 Miles album. Still, it was an r/evolution that continues to influence.
oh yeah jazz, i like that.
3.5
Very nice, makes me feel like I’m in a classy restaurant 3.5/5
Have it on vinyl probably my favorite jazz album
Lately I have been getting a little more into jazz, so this came at a great time! I knew So What ahead of time, it's the standout song for me on this album.
Good music, not sure how much I would want to listen to it again, but enjoyable. 3.5
one of the best ever.
Genius
So many different flavors of cool.
Great stuff
Excellent
8.5/10
Definitely the right album to play at the right time.
Beautiful album, one of my favorite jazz albums... Which means it's a solid 4 leaning 4.5! Sorry, I just don't get the urge to listen to jazz all that regularly, so chalk this rating up to my understanding/appreciation of this type of music, not to the music itself (which is still really good even to a jazz noob like myself, just not where I need something to be for me to rate it a 5). Certainly one that belongs on the list!
I liked it! Pretty short though
Jazz is not a genre that I know a lot about, and I've never listened to a Miles Davis album before, but this was very enjoyable. I'm hoping there's more Miles Davis coming up on this list!
Bardzo przyjemne jazzy. Najbardziej mi się podoba początek płyty. Brzmi jak chill niedziela w domu.
Excellent bluesy jazz. Loved Flamenco Sketches!
1. So What - a classic melody that appears in many pop culture media. really nice to listen to and would sound amazing on vinyl. Trumpets at the 5 minute mark really stole the show for me. 2. Freddie Freeloader - reminds me of a song that would be playing at a jazz bar. very low key but did very little to evoke an emotional response 3. Blue in Green - the mesh of piano and trumpet was a good listen. 4. All Blues - reminds me of a song they would use in lupin to show a sly or sneaky individual going through their day. really picks up in the middle. the rhythm of the drums amplifies the song as the day moves on 5. Flamenco Sketches - The sorrow i feel while listening to this song is conveyed very well. this song was interesting enough to the point where i went and dug up additional information to learn that this was essentially 5 individual playing out their solos. Awesome song to discover
It's probably worthy of 5 stars but I'm feeling a bit mean today.
I like 'So What' so far. Funny how the first album it generated for me was one of the few I kind of knew already but I haven't properly listened to it before. Halfway through 'So What' and I appreciate the length of this song, it feels like the instruments have time to explore That was a fun chill piece but still engaging , next one, Freddie Freeloader! I like when the instruments like fade temporarily to give different ones time to breathe on their own Maybe I'm too much of a dunce to appreciate the ornamentation and techniques and subtle changes in the piece but it is getting repetitive but still solid I'm enjoying this more longing, emptier 'Blue in Green', stands out more compared to the last 2 songs. I liked the end of 'Blue in Green' 'All Blues' has another fascinating opening with the piano I'm noticing that the 1st song and now this one have lyrics on Spotify but unless I missed or forgot I didn't hear any 'All Blues' has this constant up and down thing that seems to swap between accompaniment and melody 'Flamenco Sketches' is more piano oriented and calmer and is winding down nicely un triumphant ending I like it First impressions after listening to the whole thing: I can definitely see why this is regarded as one of the best albums of all time! Works as both perfect background music yet draws you in time and time again. I felt as if some parts were mildly repetitive, specifically in 'All Blues' and 'Freddie Freeloader', but its still an enjoyable experience. I think im too impatient to truly appreciate it, but I would listen to this again. Favourite Track - Blue in Green 8/10
There's something effortlessly cool and graceful to this that is hard to find elsewhere. The bass just stumbles and trips all over the place without ever losing grace.
The spirit of jazz has clearly blessed me, as I’ve been generated another Miles Davis album today making it two in a row. I’ll certainly take that and am happy to listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: So What This time, similar to In A Silent Way, we only have a few songs on the album but they are extra long. This is in contrast with Birth Of The Cool yesterday which had shorter, more traditional length songs. Once again, the music is fantastic, if perhaps somewhat more morose at times. It’s quite amazing to hear all the different emotions Miles Davis is able to express through his trumpet, and it’s very clear why he is considered one of the greats. My only criticism might be due to being a millennial - if songs are too long my mind can wonder a little. Overall, another fantastic album.
Pleasant listening! Background music.
Good cooking music
Great
brilliant jazz album, beyond influential, instrumentation still sounds fresh to this day
My first jazz album, a very good one to listen to. Blue in Green was my absolute favorite on this album
put this on in the background throughout my day and really really enjoyed it
Favourite: All Blues
Este disco me produce una paz increíble, no se si decir que es mi favorito pero, realmente es un buen disco por si solo.
I liked it. I like all of it. I would definitely listen to it again.
This is my second Miles Davis album, the previous one getting a 5/5 from me, so I am very excited to listen to this one. Another album of excellent music, I loved it.
4/5. An essential in jazz listening but sometimes you’re not always in the mood for jazz.
Chill.
Ryan would insist that I mention that this album is influential, so getting that our of the way. Fantastic interplay, a musical premonition of the truly crazy shit he would do a decade later (my favorite stuff) A chill affair...not sure if he was back on heroin for this or not.
Den helt gode jazz, lækre toner
Smooth and sophisticated. I could see myself really appreciating this on a gloomy day, wrapped up warm with a hot drink, listening to this either through some far better headphones than I currently have, or listening to it on vinyl. I certainly have to be in a particular mood or scenario to really appreciate this, but it's just some lovely and timeless jazz.
Light 8 very chill liked it a lot, not my first choice for listening to music but could definitely see situations I’d listen
Joooo classic men int min favorit av honom
4 såååå chiilll fr duuude 😩😩
Kind of Boo
Album remarquable. Ce jazz doux, harmonieux et suave m’enchante.
it’s not my usual type of music but it was very relaxing while listening in class
Listened while working — this music is timeless. Hard to believe it's from 1959 and still sounds so cool. Miles' trumpet is one thing, but Coltrane's sax just rips through the mix when he's playing. And then there's Cannonball Adderley, which is about the coolest name you can have. The bass also drew me in. I'm not sure what it'll take to get a 5 from me on a jazz album, I guess I'm waiting to find out. But this is excellent .
I listened to the album while falling asleep and it was dreamy.
Good stuff
Jazz isn't my favourite, but early Miles Davis albums are an exception
Lovely stuff
Really great jazz album 🎺
An all time great. Love this album. Feel like I’m in Mad Men when I listen to it
The sax was a little grating to my ears on the first track, but otherwise this was very enjoyable.
i really enjoyed the jazz in this album while romanticizing school when walking through the halls. what's not to like? overall it wasn't super profound music but i really liked the vibe.
Y'know I liked it. At first I hated it, the jumped between irritated, bored, into it, then bored again. But, then, that's jazz and a great part of why I usually hate it. But I listened to it again and it was better. Maybe not 100% for me but I sorta, kinda get it. I'd say it's a 3 personally, probably a 5 for it's cultural importance so it gets a 4 all considered
Good ol'-fashioned blues. Mellow and pleasant enough to make good background listening, but more importantly, very rewarding for those who focus on the music itself.
What is there to say, it's great Miles Davis.
not the biggest jazz fan but talent is talent
My first experience with this release. It was like a hot cup of coffee on a cool fall morning. It was pure, smooth syncopation. I loved it.
Amazing licks and structure.
4.5 This is often considered the best jazz album of all time. This is where I was recommend to start my jazz journey by a customer named Marty and I did. There are so many incredibly iconic players on this record that it’s basically the Avengers of jazz and they’re all at the top of their game. I admit that I had to listen to this one a few times to finally start to enjoy it. But once it clicked it clicked. There are moments of tenderness, but also the faster almost Ed , Edd n Eddy style sound. Every time I listen I like to try and zero in on a different player and how they’re fighting for the limelight at any given moment. It’s a different album every time I listen based on my mood. I still have a lot to learn from this one but I can safely say I get why people like it so much. Favorites include: So What, Freddie Freeloader, All Blues, Flamenco Sketches
As pure as jazz gets.
Obviously extremely impressive, but it didn't do it for me the same way Bitches Brew does, unfortunately
so what; blue in green
One of the best Jazz albums ever. 4/5 Best track: So What, Freedie Freeloader
Miles Davis and crew absolutely kill this. Loved it
Putain d'album, seul défaut je l'ai trop écouté
3.6⭐️
[First song]A good mild start, and as the time goes, the album is able to keep my mood up and going so far for the first 6 minutes so far. I really like the piano.
Jazz classic for a reason. Smooth and hypnotic.
Great jazz album. Not my style but I’d recommend to anyone that loves jazz.
Nice noodly jazz
Miles Davis is the undisputed king of cool. If you're going to play with Davis, you better bring your A-game and pay attention to what Miles is doing. Everyone in the band got the memo and understood the assignment. Except for Coltrane. While everyone else was focused on riding the pocket, nailing the vibe, and producing the single tastiest jazz album of all time, John Coltrane was just trying to cram as many notes into the bars as possible without regard for what anyone else was doing. There's just too much Coltrane on this Miles Davis album. Would have been an easy 5-stars if it weren't for John's nonsense. Luckily, he dialed it back for the last half of the album but, at the end of the day, I wanted WAY more Miles Davis than I got from this Miles Davis joint.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable listen. "So What" really transports you somewhere else while listening.
Miles!
4.5/5 Very nice and smooth, and I can hear that modal difference 😉
Masterful and soothing
Great album all around.
A very comfortable kind of jazz, not chaotic. I enjoyed the listen.
Never much of a fan of Davis, but this was nice. Smooth and worth multiple listens. Maybe it's the gateway album to more Miles. Added.
4.75
Cool. It's not my favourite Miles Davis, it's less creative than some of his other stuff. Also I think studying 'kind of blue' for music GCSE ruined it a bit for me
This was the first instrumental jazz album I really liked - it didn't sound all the same or like elevator music.
classic alert
You guys pretty much covered it all on this one. If I can go one step further, I almost think you could take 30 seconds from "So What" - the 15 seconds before the trumpet comes in, and then the 15 seconds after - and play that to any human being on Earth as a gauge for their tolerance of jazz. I really like a lot of Duke Ellington and that swing stuff, but there's no question that when people think of jazz as a genre they're thinking of the kind that's on display on this record. So, if you don't like that trumpet intro, then this ain't for you. If you do, then please drive through the gate. It's also nice that jazz is popular with audio nerds and these albums always tend to have really good remasters. Listening with headphones, I could hear what I assume is the reverb of the actual room they recorded in at times (especially with the sax on "So What.") Other times I could make out the faintest use of the brush on the snare drum, almost sounding like a record hiss or something. Took me a second to even realize what it was. Lastly, as someone who played trumpet in middle school and for one year of high school, I feel supremely qualified to comment that it's actually really hard to make a trumpet sound intentionally sad like it is on "Flamenco Sketches." Unintentionally sad? Yes. Daily. And I was first chair!
A definitive Jazz record and a great introduction to anyone who is new to the genre .
Just when i was ready to throw out all jazz... this is subtle, soulful, cool and enjoyable. It does not venture much into the territory where is seems like the instruments are frantically sparring with each other creating stress and frenzy. Big thumbs up.
Lovely stuff.
Ignore my arbitrary rating :P
Really beautiful, emotional album, one of the best jazz blues albums
I can understand why people claim this is one of the best jazz records in the world and a most have for anyone who loves jazz. It’s not my go to genre but it is nice to listen to as a chill out/easy listening to groove.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: So what
I put this on while making dinner tonight and I have never felt more classy. Also I was making chicken fingers
I like him
This is the kind of thing I could have on in the background all day. Incredibly pleasant but not the kind of thing I'm ever going to be thinking 'damn, I must listen to this right now'. Very nearly a 5 because it kicked off the chillest album radio for the rest of the day
So easy to listen to, I ended up listening to the spotify radio for this album all day. Fantastic.
I'm not usually a fan of smooth jazz, and I don't particularly love albums with no stand out tracks. It is therefore bizarre how much I enjoyed this, I felt relaxed and much more focussed throughout. Is it one of my favourite ever albums? No, but it's close!
I should listen to jazz more.
Excellent jazz
-I am well aware of this album's importance, but am not smart enough to analyze jazz -I like the doo doot part in "So What"
Heard this once before, very nice soothing jazz.
If you've stumbled upon my review of "Kind of Blue" while scrolling through, you don't need me to explain it's a classic. A quick look at this album on any corner of the Internet reveals a unanimous outpouring of praise: it cemented modal jazz as a definitive form of improvisation, influenced generations of jazz and rock musicians alike, and stands outside of its genre as one of the best albums ever made. Its place as an all time classic in musical history is safe, and objectively it's without doubt a 5*. That said, I'm trying to be as subjective as possible in these rankings, and jazz has never been my favourite genre. In the past I've struggled to stay engaged, to give the music my full attention, to appreciate the depth of feeling and talent on show. With "Kind of Blue", this hasn't been the case: the virtuosic talent and unbeatable expression of the soloists is inescapable. Their lines are often dazzling, frequently captivating: it's definitely the best jazz I've heard. "So What" is the album highlight. Just listen to that iconic piano and double bass conversation that kicks things off: anticipation slowly builds via subtle modulations and variations on one figure, before the trumpet solo bursts in as the cymbal crashes in and the bass starts a-walking. We then cycle through the soloists of the album (including John Coltrane on tenor sax) and all of them lend their own distinct flavour to the proceedings. In particular, Davis gives the trumpet more street cred than I ever thought possible. The other songs progress in the same way: alternating solos, instruments wrapped in dialogue with one another, variations in dynamics and accompaniment to keep things fresh. "All Blues" and "Freddie Freeloader", being more tied to blues structures, feel more familiar and less groundbreaking: to me, they come off as the most repetitive, even if the musicianship remains excellent. The two ballads are notable for their sparsity, as well as their beautiful melodic lines. In "Flamenco Sketches", I stopped trying to analyse and just let the mood sweep me away to some distant horizon: a perfect way to close. Because I still need to go further to "get" jazz, I'm keeping this at a 4 for now, but the work required is all mine: one day I hope I can fully appreciate the beauty Davis and co. have to offer.
If you're in the m00d, Miles Davis is one baaaaad d00d
Jim KavanaghBlue heart @Jimbokav1971 · 16s Replying to @Jimbokav1971 87. Kind of Blue - Miles Davis 5 tracks, This is great, (it really is), but it's not something that you can listen to at any time. It's basically a buzz-killer after Little Richard, (and I don't want my buzz killed!) 4/5
good
2nd December 2021 Listened on my way in to the office on a grey London morning. Setting seemed perfect for this album, always liked the thought of jazz without actually liking it. But this is very atmospheric, and feels like new York.
Highlights the beauties of jazz; def an album you have to be in the mood for. 7/10.
Chill
This takes me back. It got overplayed somewhat, making it a bit hackneyed, but going back to listen to the full album again is a treat.
The coolest the office has ever been.
I loved the sequence editions
Really nice dinner music or late night by the fire with a wine or whisky
Great Jazz
gradevole se di sottofondo
Miles en John Coltrane, volgens mij de enige twee jazz-mannen waar ik wel van kan genieten.
Nice.....
Не большой фанат, неплохой ремастер.
Very nice.
better than the other miles Davis album. honestly could see myself listening to this every once in a while
esse tipo de som é fácil de gostar...... não terminei mas deixei na lista de favoritos do youtube
Just top notch jazz
Not a jazz guy, but good album
Love the trumpet, and enjoyed it all overall. Preferred "a silent way", but this was still a great listen.
Very good instrumental jazz music. Exactly what I would expect from Miles Davis.
Enjoyable and something I would not usually listen to. Not sure I'd be able to tell bad Jazz from good Jazz honestly but this seemed like good Jazz
's good. But I prefer "Something Else"
Short and sweet
A quintessential jazz album and amazing experience. It was edited in a way where all of the tracks blend together into a great experience with every instrument helping punctuate Davis' skills. Gotta love Bill Evans too!
On Day 1, my album was Birth of the Cool, and I said neither of these classics ever clicked for me. Well, I'm definitely enjoying Kind of Blue this time around. I always saw the skill... but first few times I heard it, I was just getting into jazz and was listening to it alongside Miles's fusion albums, which made it sound a little sedate. But it just has an energy of a different kind - a sort of rolling boil that never bubbles all the way over. I love how it's effortlessly laid back compared to bebop. My favourite jazz style is hard bop, and this has the same attention to clear melodic lines. Sidenote: I must be a hopeless ignoramus, because I still can't get my head around what "modal jazz" is in layman's terms. I gather that bebop used virtuosic chord progessions, whereas this uses modal scales for calmer, more expressive and melodic palette? However, I barely know what a chord is, and I can't get my head around what a mode is. It doesn't matter as long as I can enjoy the record, but it would be nice to work out what is happening, and be able to spot how it works in other jazz albums too. (I like a lot of Bill Evans, but again I couldn't tell you what exactly makes it modal...) Anyhow, this album is all quality. But I find it tapers off in excitement, beginning with the amazing "So What", then getting slightly less gripping with each track. 4/5 - glad I finally appreciated this one.
Like lounge jazz music. A lot of Miles on the trumpet. Don't really listen to this kinda stuff but it has a real classic/important feel about it, oozes class, undeniable. Boujee. Late night whiskey drinking cigar smoking feel. 4 stars just cos it sounded so classy
4.5 blue to green babyyy
not a big jazz person but this is one of the classics and rightly so.
Fantastic
Sick album reaaaaaaally caught some awesome vibes off of it, will defo listen again! It's defo more than a 4, but can't give it a 5 because of other albums which have played a huge role in my life and connected with me on another level. Still really sick though!
Master at his peak
Incredible musician(s), hugely influential, a huge power of social and cultural importance, ticks all the 1001 boxes. Feel like I should give 5 but, on a purely personal level, it's not entirely my bag as something I would consciously sit down and listen to. 9/10
Easy, good listening. I think I like jazz but probably won’t ever love it.
Am amazed I knew the first song “So What”. He has several songs in the detective show”Bosch”. Very smooth...felt like I was at an old blues bar listening to him play through the night. The cupped trumpet was amazing. If you have ever tried to play a trumpet it is even more impressive listening to this album. Loved “Stella by Starlight”. Great change to have No Lyrics.
4 but mostly due to impact
7. Quite good, but I don't like Jazz enough for anything to really stand out to me about it
Super chill shit
A classic jazz album. Hadn't listened to it in years, but still solid.
4
Great making dinner group o jams
Not a huge jazz fan but this has some great vibes to it
I had this album in regular rotation back in high school but it's been a couple decades since I've listened to it. Today is now a jazz day and I'm listening to all sorts of old favorites
I dig it
Calming Contemplative Still kinda don’t understand jazz
Jazz gostosin
Great, but can be boring after a dozen or so listens
Very Beautiful, one of my first full jazz album listens. Very peaceful on rainy day drive with Cassie
love love love
the king of cool jazz. This is a very important album to the genre of jazz.
I dont know jazz well enough to differentiate it from other jazz. Case in point, I didnt realize the album had finished and Spotify had started playing Freddie Hubbard. It's all very pleasant though.
Calming. Listened to it whilst cooking and drinking a glass of wine!
Nice chill jazz album
Very fun background music. Didn’t even realize the album ended!
Wonderful album as always.
Jazz explosion
I love this album. It always feels comfortable, like your favourite trousers.
One jazz album to rule them all
JAZZ? JAZZ.
Mer klassisk jazz jämfört med hans andra i listan. Inte lika roligt men perfekt som bakgrunds-musik.
I need more listens to really grow with this, it's good though!!
I liked it. is a good background music for a gathering or something to listen to in solitude to just decompress. I only rated it lower as it is not my usual style and I feel I didn’t have enough of an appreciation for the instruments themselves. However I hope this changes with further listening
It feels odd to rate this a 3 only because of how influential and large of a part of music history Miles Davis is, but I honestly don't think that pure jazz is for me. I absolutely love certain elements of jazz and think its an amazing ingredient when used in other genres, but never really gravitate to it on its own because it just sounds like elevator music, and this album is no exception. But it's really not bad in the slightest, just not memorable. 3/5
Great jazz, man!
Good Jazz Album, pretty chill. I don't get the hype, though.
A nice jazz album!
Sounds good and refreshing but every song sounds the same 6/10
Silky cool and meh
Very calm album everything is sophisticated and the trumpets play a big part in this for me, just not to my taste definitely would play this at a gathering or a party though
I nice blues album.
No entiendo si es un Blues o un Jazz. A mi me pareció más Jazz, pero no se la tapa dice Blues. Me gustó, super tranquilon, tendria este disco para ponerlo de fondo, muy piola. 7/10
its ok
2026.06.11.
I don't like jazz at all
Somewhat bemused by the stratospheric rating, I mean it's obviously good but it's just a bloke playing a trumpet!
Era hora. Pendiente lo tenía de hace bastante y fue esto lo que me hizo darle play. Lo único que tengo que decir es: "Que puedo saber eu de esa situación?".
I don’t get what makes this album better than other jazz albums. It was decent though
When I listen to jazz, I often feel like I’m looking at an abstract painting. I’m sure it’s great and took a lot of skill to produce, but I just don’t have the understanding to fully appreciate it. I’m sure a jazzman could explain why this is perhaps the most seminal jazz album, but it wasn’t something I could pick up from my listen. Pleasant enough to listen to, but didn’t feel that different from a lot of the other jazz I’ve had on this list.
This is what every Starbucks sounded like in the year 2000
I know this record is just about universally admired and enjoyed. And I don’t think I dislike it; it operates really well for me in the background. I love the skill and artistry…but this also isn’t something I’m going to go out of my way because the music doesn’t really inspire or excite me. I think it’s the genre, really. I’ve always struggled to connect with jazz. I’ll feel a little guilty for this, but I’m rating it lower than I know it actually deserves because I’ll probably never go out of my way for this record again. 7.5/10
Very pleasant and soothing. Might listen to more in the future.
I enjoyed it, but am not enough of a blues aficianado to be able to analyze it
It’s jazz *shrug*
No standouts, just genuinely chill
Obviously great music but I'm just not into jazz enough to appreciate this
It's a nice jazz album, very mellow and enjoyable.
Not a bad album. I just prefer his later albums over this one.
Not quite my kind of stuff, yet anyway.
I’m not a real jazz aficionado, but this was a pretty good album.
Smoother, more background music than his other stuff I listened to. Plus, John Coltrane! Still, just a 3. Every jazz album solidifies that I'm just not a fan
Never understood the greatest jazz album ever hype, but then again who tf understands jazz anyways
Listened during train travel and at ASP.
Obviously a great listen if you like jazz. Was a nice background tune but doesn't exactly do anything for me. I can still appreciate how important Miles Davis is.
Second miles Davis album. Pleasantly surprised with the first. High hopes for this one. Cool piano to start. Awesome horns. Super relaxing song. I like how there a clear jump from one sign to the next. Freddie freeloader is the same as in it a great musical piece, but different enough where it doesn’t sound like the first song. Just an incredible trumpet throughout. Piano isn’t as good in this one. Much better piano in blue in green. Cool horn too, very 50s/60s. This one is much slower. All blues is more of the same. This one is fun. I like the background production a lot. Love the hints at 5:30 on. Saved the beta for last with flamenco sketches. Best production so far. Really nice piano. Enjoyable album for sure but I wouldn’t say it was life changing. Really good music to work to. Definitely better than most to all jazz. Last song helps a ton. 3.3/5.
The first song reminds me of music played in a fancy places lobby or during the credits of an older superhero film or perhaps the Incredibles. I do enjoy wind instruments and precision, I personally wouldn't label these songs as jazz 100% but they've got good elements from that genre. Overall I'd give this album a 3.5 out of 5 It's not my type of music but it's not bad at all and I would enjoy listening to it on the occasion
good jazz for jazz listeners (not me)
It's good for listening as a background music, nothing sticks out tho
I kinda wish I was a jazz guy. Don't get me wrong, i enjoyed it, but I dont think im getting it.
Background dinner music
1959. Sextet. Based entirely on modal jazz.
It’s Miles Davis. Great when in the mood but not often in the mood. 3/5
3*, but more enjoyable than "In a Silent Way"
good easy listening, unfortunately not a huge jazz fan 😞. i found it to be a bit repetitive, not much variety in the sound. still good tho
Music is subjective.
i can only go so far with jazz..... this is good but it's just not my kind of good :)
call me gen z but i don’t possess a deep appreciation for jazz…
This album is famous enough that I am aware of it being important to listeners of jazz. I listened all the way through for the first time and it is okay for me. The first track was probably my favorite. I find it challenging to actively listen to it because I'm not sure what makes it stand out from other jazz. It's an uninformed take and I own that. I'm going to go with 3 stars.
It was good for background music tho it did feel fairly repetitive and not engaging but that’s ok.
Iha nice, todella pitkiin biisejä. Hyvä aamun junamatkalle sillä syke laskee.
Nice and peaceful
not really my style but still a good album
Very nice jazz classics. A bit too boring for me cuz I was in the mood to listen to crazy lyrics, but it gives off rainy slow evening in a restaurant. Or studying in the library in the evening. While listening to this album I let all my thoughts to play in my mind, especially contemplated a lot about the recent situation with that one person. Don’t feel sad tho, I think it’s supposed to be like that
at first I couldn't really understand why people like jazz, but than I read somewhere that "in jazz people not speaking the same language could come together and create something great". That alone gave me an bigger appreciation for the genre, but still at this moment, not my type of music.
Great
I honestly don't know how to rate this. I just don't think I get it.
I’m probably rating these all wrong but part of my rating is based on the probability of ever listening to the album again. I used to work at a job where jazz was played all the time and so I just don’t reach for a jazz album when I want to listen to something. That said this feels like it’s an “important” jazz album…but what do I know?
Dou 3 pq não consegui escutar o álbum direito. Futuramente volto e reviso a nota (!)
Again not my usual thing but it was appreciated
no hay mucho para analizar, sino para sentir y meterse en la música. minimalista pero expresivo
Not sure what will get me over the hump with jazz like this. I want to like it so badly, but just get bored. That note in “Freddie freeloader” duuuun duuuuuun, just sounds like they’re taunting me. Obviously it’s smooth, obviously they’re talented. I guess it’s just me!

Cool jazz
Pleasant enough.
I’m not that into jazz
3 stars for being iconic. But I’m just not a jazz guy
Appreciate the art but not my cup of tea
Perfect background music. I've come to realise jazz isn't a genre that appeals to me, but I don't love it or hate it. I appreciate it for what it is, but it's not something I'd listen to in my own time. However, I can imagine seeing this kind of music live would be a lot more enjoyable than through a speaker. I'll give this a down-the-middle 2.5/5.
its definitely something different from what i usually listen to, but it was refreshing and surprisely relaxing, jazz is so…smooth and elegant, it was interesting starting this journey with something with no lyrics, it actually made me pay more attention to the estructure and the progression of the accords and the instruments involved, thats something that ill prob try to check more often, and again…it was relaxing thats the best way that i can describe it rn…i’ll prob get better at this in a couple of days or weeks
I wasn't completely unfamiliar with this album, I've heard one track before, so I knew what to expect. However I've never really listened to the genre. I feel like I don't really get jazz yet, I can't rate this any higher. For me, jazz is dinner music, just something that quietly plays in the background. I can't imagine listening to it with my undivided attention. Overall, it was a nice listen.
It was jazz. Jazz is fine. Played it on spotify, so dunno when this album ended and Spotify started playing just more jazz.
hmm jazz isnt really my thing, i prefer lyriced music so this was a bit new for me. it generally sounds nice though! would maybe put it on for background music some day. liked freddie freeloader, blue in green and flamenco sketches!
Muy chill, me bajo 10 cambios 🎷
It was like having a soundtrack for my morning chores
Plaisant à mettre en fond mais j’ai pas réussi à être touchée par le côté spleen
Melódico, no me gustó
A really good album, I liked Freddie Freeloader the most.
Most jazz fans know this album. I find it self indulgent. Clearly he has skills that exceed most musicians, but so did Dave Brubeck, or even his band mates here. They still wrote songs that let the music shine rather than just technical skill.
Good jazz no singing
Some black jazz! Makes a change from your Getzs and your Brubecks. Enjoyed this, not usually my thing but this was pretty mellow and accessible.
Nice! I liked it. Reminds me working for Indigo (shudder) but nothing against Mr. Davis of course. SWANKY/CHILL/VIBEY/SOULFUL/RELAXING
Ok
Miles Davis didn't do much for me with this album, not entirely sure why. But it's still very good.
It's fine
Good instrumental jazz
Throw a symbol at my head.
I know he is meant to be one of the greats but I cannot get into jazz.
Listened to half. No lyrics so wasn’t matching my freak at the time
I DON'T KNOW HOW TO REVIEW JAZZ, IT SOUNDED GREAT, a TOE TAPPER
It is played wonderfully, quite soulful, but I would never listen to this kind of music on my own.
Like, perfectly pleasant in a background, low-engagement kind of way. But it doesn't really pull me in. I would ultimately like it or dislike it more depending on the setting I'm in or what I'm doing, so, vibes-based. But I mean, I’m a zillennial, so anything I say on 50s-60s albums should be taken with a grain of salt as I’m probably not refined enough to fully grasp the importance of this album. For me, it’s the musical equivalent of a slow head nod and a slight lip pucker like, “yeah, this is alright,” but I’m not going to put this on on my own any time soon."
Another jazz album to have in the background. It’s fine but nothing was particularly intriguing
Jazz of course. More Coltrane-y than I expected (he did perform on this album) This and A Love Supreme would make a great double-bill. Not much else to say, but it's an easy listen, not as challenging as ALS. Hard to choose best track.. Maybe All Blues Flamenco Sketches shows off the trumpet skills nicely, goes from screeching to sounding as gentle as a woodwind in a breath. Best track - So What, All Blues 3 stars
Enjoyed the music as background music. Never felt tired of it or like I wanted to turn it off. Would listen to it again, but probably wouldn't seek it out, out of the blue.
I liked parts of it but struggled at times
