Reviews (page 6 of 14)

My first listen of 1001 and what a terrific start. Perhaps the best jazz album of all time. What a cast! Miles, Trane, Cannonball, Chambers, Cobb, Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly. Classic compositions like "So What" and "All Blues". Miles at his melodic best!

Music and quality of the UHQR Vinyl from AP is incredible. For me one of the greatest standards ever.

It is one of the best jazz albums I've heard, it was so calming

I love Miles Davis!! 5 Stars!

Very enjoyable. Knew it before as 1 of the few jazz albums I own. Modal = mo melody

Simply great!

All time best

What can you say? The epitome of jazz.

Pretty legendary album, and it's one of the first albums I started listening to when I wanted to explore some Jazz albums. For being Jazz, it has quite memorable tunes and melodies, and feels more coherent and less "jammy" than many Jazz albums, which I appreciate. I haven't found any Jazz album so far that I appreciate more than this. This album always makes me want to some dim-lit cozy bar late in the evening and see some calm jazz.

What in the world could I say about this that hasn’t already been said?

Not only my favourite jazz album, but one of my overall favourite albums of all time. I just love how an album can be so assessable and sophisticated at the same time. Brilliant soothing back ground music, but sit down and critically listen and you are in for a treat of musical layers of beauty and emotion. An absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word. 5 stars

i don't normally rate jazz 5 but this one was super enjoyable for me. when im not focusing on its quite calming/relaxing, and when i focused in it suddenly became really interesting and technical. definitely will relisten for the latter reason.

One of my favorite albums of all time!

I own this album and listen to it often

Always enjoyed Miles Davis.

Stellar....just absolutely stellar

It's just fucking cool.

Timeless. A best seller for a reason. And no lyrics for a change.

Such a classic easy listen - already heard this album but listened again. So smooth and relaxed, it just makes things feel so much more relaxed. None of the instrumentation feels forced, and everyone is content to sit back when its not their turn and mournful flourish when it is.

Tidenes beste?

Jazzy doo baps

Everything about this album is just great. So many emotions conveyed through the trumpet. I've listened to this in the past and it's just as good as the first listen

Amazing music!

Classic

What can I say? The greatest jazz album ever made.

awesome!

Great starting point for experiencing jazz. Highlight: “Blue in Green”

Good Listened to it all day. Like it from before

Absolute masterclass, flawless albums from beginning to the end 5*

ya like jazz?

Amazing album. Not much else to say.

If you couldn’t tell by now, I’m such a sucker for jazz music, it’s not even funny. I still have yet to find a jazz album I can say I genuinely didn’t enjoy. And I knew that I would eventually have to listen to this. If this list of 1001 albums is based on both popularity and how impactful and influential a piece of music is, there might not be an album more important than this one. I’m willing to make the claim that this is the most well known, recognizable, and important jazz record ever made. And it’s easily one of the greatest as well. I’m not the only one who believes this either. The impact this has had, on not only jazz, but the medium of music in general, is immeasurable. And it has rightfully earned this reputation. If this was an object you could feel, it would be warm and soft to the touch, like velvet. This is just about as traditional as jazz music can get, but that isn’t bad at all. This is by no means experimental, avant-garde, or hard to listen to. Anyone who even mildly likes jazz music will be able to appreciate this. And none of this would be possible if it weren’t for the indestructible foundation this was built upon. If you look at the line up of who worked on this record, it’s damn near flawless. What they were working with here was a combination of arguably the greatest jazz composer, bandleader, and trumpeter of all time, one of the greatest saxophonists of all time, one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time, and one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. It may sound like I’m over embellishing, but I’m truly not. This was built for success. There was no way it could fail. This is the jazz equivalent of the 1995-96 Bulls season. If you like jazz, especially relaxing and simple jazz, and you have somehow not heard this already, please give this a listen. Rating: 10/10

I absolutely loved this jazz album. I have always heard Miles Davis name but never listened to his music. Wow, I absolutely loved this. I didn't pay attention to the different songs, but I loved the whole 45 minutes. I will definitely be listening to more.

This is the kind of music I think of when I hear the word "jazz". I don't know a damn thing about jazz but I like this record. I'm giving it a 5 because I think that's what music nerds are supposed to do and I'm a music nerd.

The epitome of cool

This is the first one on the list that I know very well. I think I first bought it in high school. I used to listen to it quite a bit but probably haven't sat with it in over 10 years. It's still nice to listen to it again, especially considering how long it's been and how different it is from all of punk rock I listen to these days (again). When I was a junior in college, I took a girl out on a date and played this in the car to impress her. Looking back, it wasn't just pretentious it was misguided :D I was a band nerd in high school, and even played in the jazz band. I never liked modern jazz, especially the stuff they played in the dentist's office, but Miles Davis, and this album in particular, was really easy for me to hang my hat on. You don't need to think too much to get it. You can feel it all. Had a really pleasant listen via my Airpods. I love hearing the separation of the players in the mix. You feel like your sitting at the feet of the bass player taking it all in.

Perfect starting gate listening jazz music

What an absolute classic!

Superb.

Miles Davis!! The best of the best in Jazz! Great birthday present. Amazing! I could listen all day.

Awesome!

Pure magic

Already listened

One of my favourites

One of my most formative. Top.

i actually really like this :) it was all so calming

Listened to it twice. Love every song.

I’ve heard this 100 times. It may be the greatest of all time

Can’t believe this project is covertly turning me into a blues n jazz gal.

THE jazz album.

I'm gonna give it 5 out of 5. So What? Call me a Freeloader, but I truly believe some classic albums click with you instantly and you understand the reason they're revered. I would stand by this album until I was Blue in then Green in the face. All Blues even! I would Sketch up an argument for it's place in the pantheon of jazz classics any day.

Abso-fucking-lutely

10/10 best jazz album ever

Amazing

One of my favorites. I knew this album really well but gave it a couple more listens and it still holds up, as good as ever. It’s one of the few jazz albums I really got to know and love.

Headphones on. This is an album that gives you all the right feels, in the eight places, right from the very start.

Well worth it's iconic status as arguably the most important jazz album of all time.

Jedna z najlepszych płyt MD i jazzu i muzyki.

Cool before cool was cool.

Amazing musicianship and beautiful songs. Extremely well recorded aswell.

A go to album, great for anytime. Except for some bad production artifacts, A near perfect record.

One take!

Classic. Iconic. Essential. 5.0

An absolute banger from start to finish. I could listen to this record in any mood. I feel like if aliens landed on earth you could show them this album and they'd immediately get it and start boppin'. Was hoping to explore some Miles that I wasn't already familiar with to begin this journey, but I guess we'll start with his strongest (arguably?) first and foremost. Unequivocally a classic.

Great when you are in the mood for Miles Davis. There is nothing that quite fits that spot like he does.

Miles Davis fills my whole heart with the blues, I love the soft progression with the delicate usage of the usually booming brass. I could very easily smoke a joint to this while lounging or making dinner. the delicate piano takes me to my next destination like a businessman in the big city on this way to work.

DAMNNNN Been meaning to get to this one for a while, it was a really nice refresher after that chocolate starfish bullshit. This is one of the most essential jazz albums of all time in most peoples eyes, and it’s clear why. Thoughts: creaming myself Favorite songs: All of them (Blue in Green)

Stellar.

I mean - does it get better than this?

Absolute classic

not saying anything new: pretty great!

I can't stand jazz but I love this

I can see why this is one of the foundational jazz albums, as someone wanting to get into jazz but not knowing where to start this was great! A really easy listen and could really pick out each individual instrument and hone in on the playing

Fantastic record. I feel like this is one of the first, probably the first, record you would play for someone who has never heard jazz before. This is a record you can sit and listen to and pick apart or you can throw it on in the background when you're doing other things. Whether or not you like jazz, this is something that anyone who just appreciates music will be into.

Flawless

Beautiful album! Truly a genius musician, the way he led other musicians to envision the sounds he was hearing, amazing. Top notch players and beautiful songs! 9 out of 10

the peak of jazz

This really is as good as its reputation. Shall definitely be revisiting

Exceptional

amazing jazz

One of the greatest recordings of all time.

It's Miles Davis. Not much more can be said. It's a milestone album, as canonical as it can get.

Very satisfying album - it slowly built up, and I could really feel the story being told. The last song seemed to be a place where things worked out. I loved the album's creativity

Classic

Everytime I listen to this album, I get more out of it. The first time I thought it was ok, but I didn't get the hype. Now after like a billion listens throughout many years I get the hype. This album has so much atmosphere and the solos are so memorable. Everytime the mode changes in the pieces, I can feel a very distinct vibe shift and it feels like I'm seeing new colors. This album sounds very blue and green to me. Like a deep blue. Like the so black its blue kind. Like you're walking down the street in the dead of night kind of so black its blue. Call me a yapper idc. This album is great. 9.8/10

I didn't realize I enjoyed jazz so much when I started this, but here is another awesome album I could listen to on repeat.

This is the only jazz album I've ever really got into. Love it

This is a well storied album. Nothing more that can be said than completely revolutionary

Simply mellifluous! I think I love jazz.

What can I say, it’s miles David, if it was any cooler it would be frozen

Masterpiece

Album so good i have it on vinyl! Truly a classic, love listening to this track 5/5

the lineup? all-stars. the music? impeccable. miles davis was always an icon and this album definitely helped to build that reputation. i could talk about jazz all day tho so i'll leave it at that

A masterpiece !

Love this album. Could listen to it anytime. Possibly the best jazz album from arguably the best jazz musician. Some people can’t appreciate jazz and that’s a damn shame because they miss out on classics like this. This album is so entirely what it set out to be. The soul of a lonely person pours out of the speakers beautifully every time. Hope that made sense. 5/5

I really like the idea behind the album, not writing anything, and just asking the band to improvise base on a given set of scales

Landmark jazz album that as cool as fuck as they say.

Iconic!

most beautiful music ever, every note from every solo seems so tasteful, i wanna play jazz and respect it and dive in it more than ever, to express myself in that way

The sound is almost cliche as it’s been emulated for generations since. The archetype of jazz

Only made a few tracks through but it’s great. Will go back and listen to the rest.

Total classic. One of my favorite albums regardless of genre.

THE album that got me into jazz!

Peak jazz

Crystalline perfection - the definitive jazz album. Defines what it means to flawlessly embody an ideal.

Flamenco sketches reminded me of a Sara barielles song I like “Gravity” enjoyed the album a ton!

Come ON. So good .

Great album. All Blues was my favorite 5

So glad I listened. Perfect for lazy day and a glass of wine 5/5

Whoa, this is Jazz!

Bien perre me gusto mucho yyyyy es mi estilo de musica gracias xd.

Great jazz, classic

Accesible jazz classic.

Perfect album to focus while working.

Fantastic. This is the first cool jazz album that I have really 'got'. Loved it.

Love this album. I have owned it for years.

This was great, I found myself toe tapping along despite jazz not being my thing. Thoroughly enjoyable. Need to listen again in different settings\moods.

There's much to be said about this album. But its best to leave it up to listening.

Yes 5 stars

Excellent noodling, house chores music

Jazz Chill

Not a typical listener of Jazz. This was actually very good. It caught my attention when I had it on for background music.

Fucking amazing

Already a Davis fan. I know I've listened to this before. But not to the point where I know all the songs inside out. After listening of course it's all wonderful. Perfect for quiet Sundays or a chill work day.

One of my favorite Jazz albums. Have already listened to it over 100 times.

Vamos mejorando, imprescindible.

So What is echt een heerlijke opener. Krijg hier echt kippenvel van, zo nice als alle instrumenten klinken en hoe mooi dit album ook opent. Sowieso een album met Miles Davis én John Coltrane?? Sign me the fuck up. FAVO: So What, Blue in green, Flamenco Sketches

A master. Playing with other masters.

I feel like I always hear something new when I listen to this one

Spun the vinyl. So beautiful.

This can only be a 5.

Five tracks. Five absolute classics. Five stars.

Excellent record.

What can I say about “Kind of Blue”? Take some of the greatest Jazz players of their generation, throw them in a room, let magic happen. Not a bad track on the album. A must for anyone getting into jazz. Top Songs: take your pick Rating: 9/10

Phenomenal

5/5. Just an absolutely atmospheric experience.

i downloaded 1,3,5! superb. really enjoyed

Heard before: yes If you were to ask random people what they think "jazz" is, probably 80% will describe something like this record. Unsurprisingly, it rewards close listening too. Bill Evans is so cool, and the way they stack the harmonies like on All Blues is foundational. Anyway, I'd like to be a contrarian, but how can you not call this a top record of all time? Note: if you want the full blast of awesomeness, stick to the original 5-track record. Non-stop. Top tracks: So What, Freddie Freeloader, All Blues

Perfection. There's a reason why this is the gateway drug for people looking to waste their lives listening to musicians insisting on playing the wrong notes.

The jazz equivalent of just doing one line of coke that late night in town. It might seem innocent at first until you wake up 10 years later going through every record store looking for that one John McLaughlin bootleg where, rumor has it, he unintentionally skips a beat. Jazz. Just do it kids.

Sooooo smooth If I was asked, "Do you like jazz?" I would respond yes, and not be startled or surprised by who or what is asking me. Listening to this just demands my attention, which is hard to do for me with lyric-less music. It's so incredibly modal and dissonant without being "crunchy".

One of the most gorgeous albums ever made. Just a stunning masterpiece. There aren't enough words to describe this. An astounding achievement.

huomaa poppijatsin heti... heh kiinnostavimmat osuudet ei populaa populaa pistänyt klikkaamaan... poppiosiot klikkaukset sauhuaa....I am not a huge fan of jazz, ja et ole vieläkään...näit niin paljon positiivisia arvosteluja että päätit tykätä tästä heh....meikäpoika, antaa vitosta koska objektiivinen..teikäläinen subjektiivisesti....we are not the same...respektiä niille jotka VIHAA TÄTÄ ALBUMIA all blues

Clear #1 of the big three jazz albums of all time. Hard to find a stronger 5.

All time classic. Standard. Cerebral and serene but intense. Best Jazz record ever.

Un album de Jazz seminal, sumamente importante para cualquier persona que quiera iniciarse en el género.

Admittedly I don't know much about jazz but it was an extremely satisfying listen. I loved it!

J A Z Z

It's 3AM on the lower east side of NYC. The smells of the spring rain waft in through the open window of your lower first-floor apartment lit by the reflected light of streetlamps and the flashing neon sign outside of the bar that just closed. The love of your life just left you for your brother. This album is perfection, and not the only example of it that Miles would lay down on vinyl. 5/5

What’s with me getting absolute classics every Monday since school started back up? Kind Of Blue is sort of the popular decision for greatest jazz album of all time. What can I say? This is influential, original, technical, enjoyable, all the positive words. Just listen to it if you somehow haven’t by now.

One of the albums of all time. This defined Jazz for me.

I mean, it's THE Jazz album. Everybody knows it. Dads are issued a copy in the mail when they buy their first Crosley suitcase turntable from Target. But it's inescapable for a reason because it's a masterpiece from beginning to end.

Sometimes, a classic is a classic for a reason.

A generational talent. Amazing album, my favorite of his.

One of my favourite albums. And another that I can't do justice too amongst all the reviews for it. Part of my intro into loving jazz. Timeless

If you only own one jazz album....this is it....

Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue" is probably the album I've listened to more than any other in my life. It's the first jazz album I fell in love with. I can hum along to a lot of these solos as I listen. For years it was one of my go-to albums to play while studying. In high school and college, if I was feeling stressed or anxious or heartbroken, I would turn to "Kind of Blue" as if it were a comfort blanket. In high school, when my dad drove me to take the SATs, I wanted to be in a relaxed, focused state, so I played "Kind of Blue" on CD in the car. We drove the twenty-or-so minutes to the testing center, snow on the ground, listening to "So What" and "Freddie Freeloader." Another time in college, a few us ate weed cookies that were stronger than we anticipated. A few people were getting anxious and I was too baked to be helpful. But I played on "Kind of Blue" from my iPod and we all sat in my dorm room and chilled out, riding out the high. "Flamenco Sketches" is easily the song I've listened to the most in my life because I use it to help me fall asleep. On those restless nights when my mind is racing, I've always counted on "Flamenco Sketches" to center me and relax me. I'll play it on repeat, as softly as possible so that I can barely make out the notes. My brain starts to focus on the calming music instead of my thoughts and eventually... I drift into sleep. A few years back I was at a bachelor party in a cabin with no cell reception or internet. The weather was hot and humid and my friend was snoring in the bunk below me. I tried so hard to fall asleep but I couldn't. Then I remembered: I have a small handful of songs downloaded on my phone, including all of "Kind of Blue." I snuck off to a different part of the cabin, laid on the hardwood floor and played "Flamenco Sketches" until I was able to relax enough that I could fall asleep. I should back up a bit too because the whole reason I even started listening to Miles was because I had a crush on a girl in high school. I’d had some exposure to jazz. My dad loved jazz and he often played it in the house but he didn't have much Miles in his collection. He liked Charlie Parker more. Anyway, the girl I had a crush on came into school one day wearing a Miles Davis t-shirt and I just thought it was the coolest thing. I probably went to Borders that week to buy "Kind of Blue" on CD. I wanted to be ready if she asked me if I liked Miles. Nothing romantic ever happened between us (I was way too shy to make a move back then) but that t-shirt started a love affair with Miles Davis's music for me. I started collecting his albums and getting into his different eras (I love the 70's electric stuff the most). A year or two later, my parents bought me a t-shirt for Christmas... the exact t-shirt my crush had worn. I was mortified. I knew I could never wear it in school because she would see it and recognize it and how embarrassing! I hardly wore it at all until college. Then it became a high rotation t-shirt and I wore it until it had holes in it. I guess I should mention the music too. It's a perfect first jazz album to get into because you can play it in the background and listen casually. But if you put headphones on and zero in on the performances, you're treated to some spectacular solos. The album is wonderfully paced. It opens with the impossibly cool "So What." Those opening bass notes are fantastic; they set the mood perfectly. Then comes "Freddie Freeloader," a peppier song that picks up the pace a bit. Next is the gorgeous "Blue in Green." Bill Evans is such a beautiful piano player. Sometimes a phrase or melody of his catches my ear and time stands still. "All Blues" is a nice, long stretch of a song with more phenomenal and effortlessly cool playing. And of course "Flamenco Sketches" ends the album with a soft and stunningly beautiful lullaby. "Kind of Blue" is my number one desert island disc. If were stranded alone on a beach with no hope of contacting help, I'd want Miles to calm me down and keep my company.

What a lineup. Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Coltrane... it doesn't really get better than that for jazz. (Personally Coltrane is my favorite). It just makes sense that this is a 5/5. It's got everything going for it and is one of the best albums of all time. Definitely one of the best jazz albums of all time. It's got everything you could want and the performances are just on another level. This lineup man, I can't say it enough.

A group of instruments have never been so free from one other and yet so pefectly together. Unreal album. Impeccable vibes and range.

5.0 + Everyone: The perfect jazz record doesn't exist. Miles Davis: Hold my cocaine mirror.

one of the best jazz albums ever made, a masterpiece

Yksi kaikkien aikojen isoimmista jazz-levyistä eikä syyttä. Tulispa jo syksyn sateet jotta vois vielä enemmän virittyä tunnelmaan. 5/5

My jazz credentials are slim so I have nothing intelligent to say, but as far as classic(?) jazz goes, this has to be some of the best I've heard. Consistently engaging and amorphous, at times incredibly catchy, at times layered and complex. Vinyl is on high rotation at home. Four and a half. Fave track: Flamenco Sketches

One of the best albums ever!

modal jazzzzzzzzz faves: Kind Of Blue, So What, Freddie Freeloader 4.5-5/5

I think that the album featuring Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Cannonball Adderley is going to be good. What a surprise, it was. Favorite track: All Blues

It's revolutionary. It's nearly perfect. It's stood the test of time. Its importance cannot be overstated, so I won't try. Truly beautiful.

Yeah boi. Ya like absolute jazz

GOATED. Next question.

гениально

Yeah, I'm just going to let my fellow reviewers speak for me on this one. Definitely one of the very best I've heard since starting this project.

Masterpiece

Probably the most definitive jazz album? Phenomenal playing all around. And look at who plays on this! Insane lineup.

Awesome

Yeah this is a good album and we like it

Out of this world!

Can’t be less than five.

An absolute classic

Kind of perfect

Insta 5 and a great weekender! I loved listening. It’s amazing how deep in my brain some of these solos are. They’re omnipresent, they’re canonical. I listened to this album a ton in college and we had a bunch of practice analyzing some of the solos. Truly one of a kind. 5/5

Fucking masterpiece.

Easy 5. Goat

a great jazz album... I mean if you haven't heard it than hear it... It's really good... 9/10 (5/5)

Good old classic

There's cool and then there's Miles Davis cool. Not just Davis either, Johnny Coltrane and other Jazz legends all on the album as well. Easy listen to an American classic. 9/10

5/5 Best: Blue In Green Worst: Freddie Freeloader

Its a classic and a bestseller for a reason

Eight stars. This is a jazz classic, brilliant and beautiful, everyone on it is fantastic.

Classic eternal

Oh me oh my. The greatest of all time. We’ve had another Miles record on this list so far, and I think I said something along the lines of if Miles Davis was the only musician to ever exist, I’d be okay with that. If this was the only album to ever exist, it would be enough. The second note he plays on the opener, So What, and the imperfection of that octave drop just perfectly encapsulates everything I love about music.

The best Kind Of Blue.

4.5/5 good jazz

So good. I'm going to listen to it again right now. And again tomorrow.

Jazz de Miles Davis de su época más clásica. Vinilo total.

Kind of Blue is a jazz classic. It is an early album by Miles Davis and not as free spirited as his later work. He left us a catalogue with something to everyone's liking.

The very first Jazz album I listened too and brought on vinyl. Such a great collection of exceptional artists.

Wow! I never listened to it before but it’s so soothing I loved it

Legend

Jazz is a curious genre for me. Many times it doesn’t have much of an impact on me but every once and a while something just comes across as so elegant and gorgeous that it feels like I could listen to it on repeat for the rest of my life. Kind Of Blue gives me that sensation. Everything about it oozes class and creating a free flowing sound with little structure but a fantastic sense of beauty. 10/10

Jazz perfection. What else is there to say?

Obv 5 stars - Gets everyone into jazz (along with a charlie brown christmas).

Words aren't needed to describe this album

Muito bom que delicinha, que ELEGANCIA. uma fineza só, perfeito adorei.

Love some jazz

Solid piece of Jazz here

An all-star cast backs up Miles Davis on this hour plus of extraordinary quality. It is more refined than some of his earlier improvisational stuff and a definite must have for anyone that likes the genre. And a must listen for any one that's never heard it.

One of the best.

A perfect album that chills you out with the first few smooth trumpet notes from the master himself. This and ‘Round about Midnight’ are absolutely perfect records as well as guaranteed to mellow out may anxieties you might have.

I can’t understand how anyone has anything bad to say about this album. You won’t find a better jazz record even if you dug through the indie jazz bargain bin. This album remains both the greatest jazz album of all time, and the best album to get into jazz. The story goes that the legendary lineup for this album laid everything down in one take, only working off Davis’ loose direction and lead sheets. While that rumour has since been dispelled (it actually took two days and several takes), the raw skill of such a lineup made the rumour completely believable. And what a lineup it was. Both Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane trade saxophone solos, joined by Davis’ soaring muted trumpet. Underneath the trio is supported by the rhythm section of pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer James Cobb, with Evans being replaced on some tracks by Wynton Kelly. The group improvises extremely well, capturing the true essence of jazz: its spontaneity. Even if it wasn’t all done in one take, they still laid down some of the greatest jazz ever put to wax. Standout Songs: “So What” “Freddie Freeloader” “Blue in Green” “All Blues” “Flamenco Sketches”

So good it reminds me of my dad, he used to listen to this album all the time. All of the songs are so memorable, and I feel like its sometime I will come to see as more complex as time goes on.

Fantastic, I could listen to it all day. So many interesting bits.

modal jazz hmmm

It's Miles fuckin' Davis. No standouts since the album is an experience.

Classic album and really good from start to finish

makes me feel like playing persona 5 royal

Just so classic and wonderful.

outstanding

Own on Vinyl

Saxophone ist sehr gut

Hands down, one of my favorite albums of all time. A classic.

Geniales Album. Der soundtechnische Großvater von so vielem in der modernen Musik, dass es streckenweise stereotyp klingt. Aber auch nur, weils bahnbrechend war

Otroligt bra, kort och kärnfullt album. En absolut basvara i Jazz.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not THE greatest Jazz album ever made. But it is still a straight-up masterpiece that everyone should listen to at least once.

This is and will always be one of my favorite records of all time. Jazz at its absolute peak right here.

A very catchy hook-laden jazz album. Very engaging and accessible. Every musician shines. Even after all these years I still don't really know what \"modal\" means in this context, but the album is a winner for any mood, time of day, or social function. Definitely a 5. I can only imagine how ultra cool it would be to drop the stylus on the vinyl version!

classic

Brilliant from start to end miles Davis is a genius. Fresh ideas pop up throughout and it never gets tired. Best tracks: so what, flamenco sketches, blue in green

Is this too intellectual an album for me? Well, many jazzicos would have you think that. But tell you what, pop it on in secret, no preconceptions, just sit back and chill.

sempre uma satisfação ouvir este som

THE jazz album

Classic

definition of perfection. duh.

Moody and fantastic

I lived and breathed this album for a few weeks while I read Ashley Kahn's book on this album. I recommend it if you've enjoyed listening to it, its a great exploration of the album - before, its conception, and after. In case anyone reads this review and nothing else about the album I'll share Bill Evans' (pianist) line notes for it: "There is a Japanese visual art in which the artist is forced to be spontaneous. He must paint on a thin stretched parchment with a special brush and black water paint in such a way that an unnatural or interrupted stroke will destroy the line or break through the parchment. Erasures or changes are impossible. These artists must practice a particular discipline, that of allowing the idea to express itself in communication with their hands in such a direct way that deliberation cannot interfere. The resulting pictures lack the complex composition and textures of ordinary painting, but it is said that those who see well find something captured that escapes explanation. This conviction that direct deed is the most meaningful reflections, I believe, has prompted the evolution of the extremely severe and unique disciplines of the jazz or improvising musician."

nice. earlier only listened to blue in green and liked it a lot. im not a huge fan of jazz, but this album was very pleasant.

Wow! This is great! I'm not sure what it is that elevates it above the previous Miles Davis albums on the list, but I really like it. Perhaps it's because it's a more balanced album, with the focus not solely on Davis' trumpet. Every instrument is performed with incredible skill and character. The record is also beautifully paced, starting with a sense of urgency, but relaxing into a very chilled and contemplative atmosphere by the end. A jazz masterpiece. I could listen to this all day. In fact, I almost did. Rating: 4.5/5 Playlist track: Blue in Green Date listened: 30/01/23

Wasn't really feeling it when this popped up this morning but I gave it a go. I'm glad I did as it's really smooth, dense and chill. I can't understand how anyone can not like this?

The greatest jazz album of all time.

Kind of a masterpiece, right? There's not much that I can say about this record that hasn't been said a thousand times before. What a legendary ensemble of musicians. What a game changer (even though Davis' previous LP, *Milestones*, had already opened the gates that led towards 'modal jazz'). And what an amazing collection of tracks. I could listen to the waves "All Blues" so aptly evoke for hours. Those waves are waves of bliss, and *Kind of Blue* is the sort of record you can never get tired of. Five stars, obviously. Dimery's list when it comes to jazz albums is far from perfect, by the way (key LPs usually singled out by jazz fans are missing from it--LPs by Mingus, Coltrane, Blakey, Adderley, Silver, Monk, Roach, Coleman, Chambers, Dolphy, Nina Simone and even Davis himself...). But *Kind of Blue* is in there, at least (as is Coltrane's *A Love Supreme*). Had it not, *no one* would have taken this list very seriously, and this *for any music genre*. That's how important this record is. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: less than 700, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens:  approximately a half so far (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter

PERFECTION

Classic. Everyone should open this.

Davis, Coltrane, Cannonball, and Bill Evans come together to create quite possibly the most famous jazz record of all time. A collaborative attempt at establishing modal jazz, we have here a truly accessible album. Losing the repetitive nature of jazz standards or pretentiousness of bebop or swing, Kind of Blue is full of simple yet interesting hooks and smooth catchy melodies to attract all audiences and fit both mellow and energetic vibes. Not only did it change jazz as a whole, but it also changed its reputation to be appreciated by all. Despite only being 5 tracks, deep care and attention are put into each second. Their pop-like structures are engaging and justify their extensive lengths. Everyone is doing their own thing, giving us plenty to pay attention to and increasing replayability. But by maintaining restraint, they all come together to create coherent established pieces that never seem out of place. I could always find something new to appreciate with each listen. For example, Bill Evans tends to stand out for his hazy, emotional impressionist piano style, characterizing the most famous track here "Blue in Green". And despite being produced in 1959, this is among one of the best-sounding albums I've heard from the era. Everyone is clear and smooth during both its quiet and crowded moments.

One word: legendary

Very good jazz album. classic

i wouldn’t presume to opine about this

I love the title of this album, Kind Of Blue. To me that shows the tenderness and measured playing throughout the album. It’s not fully Blue, just Kind Of. Blue in Green is my favorite piece, and I love the depth of emotion that’s created through soft and small moments. Honestly, this album has just shown to me that little doesn't have to be the antithesis of big, but can be the precursor to it. Favorites: Blue in Green, All Blues, Flamenco Sketches, So What

🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠

5 superb

I wouldn't listen to jazz all the time, but I can't imagine wanting any more out of a jazz album that this doesn't provide.

Awesome!!

Classic for a lot of reasons. Still lovely to come back to this one.

Just as good as every one said. All 5 songs are masterpieces and put in the right place. Great for both deep concentrated listening and relaxing background music. The production still sounds brilliant. I can't recommend this album enough. An essential record.

The absolute best. No notes.

GOATED

Well there is not much to say about this album. Great albums require less words. Just sublime

Perfect for a snowy day. I hope it snows.

A true Jazz classic.

Ez 5. Sleepy jazz perfection. There isn't anything I don't like from it. Perf.

Incredibly chilled to the point of musical genius.

amazing

I mean. Yeah. It's good. It's miles davis.

Lovely album. It was a way in for me to jazz, which was always quite a challenging genre to find access to.

Noice . will listen again

I'm not talking about this album specifically, but this is the undebatable peak of music. This period, this genre. After this we just started going backwards, it's unreachable. And this album of course is a marvelous example of that. As an old friend of mine said, if you don't appreciate blues, you got a hole where your soul should be

Listening Now; just wow

Fuck yes

legendarisk

A perfect jazz album. Great tunes for each song and then the solos are wonderful.

The masterpiece: one of the most influential albums in history.

Perhaps the greatest Jazz album of time. Just an absolute joy to listen to these guys play, for me it's the different styles of Coltrane and Cannonball. So What is just gorgeous with Miles warming us up with his solo then Coltrane coming in on the left with his more aggressive hard bop style then cannonball in the right channel following up with a more smooth solo then finished off with Evans on piano. The rest of the album is just as brilliant. Anyone who doesn't rate this higher than 4 stars is clinically deaf.

I still get the feeling I had the first time I listened to Kind of Blue: awe.

Ooh... Just my favourite jazz album of all time. Thinking about the talent concentrating at that recording studio alone blows my mind. For decades now, this has been an album I kept coming back to again and again, always discovering new facades I wasn't aware of before (it helps that the album has been released under different speeds and such, again, and again).

Another entry that would make it on the shortlist of these 1001 albums. Works just as well for beginners to jazz as it does for veteran listeners

I mean, it is the blue print. There’s a reason why every jazz album since sounds like it’s copying the formula. It doesn’t disappoint.

I went into this album blind, although as soon as the first song started, I instantly recognised it. The album is a beautiful exercise in modal improvisation. The first song sets the album up with a lovely Dorian centered composition. 'Blue in Green' is even more impressive. It carries an extremely 'cool' sound to it whilst weaving in-between different modes. Probably the highlight of the album. The last song plays around with Phrygian. I had a great time trying to play along with this song. The melodic instruments shine in this song whilst the rhythm section sets a very certain mood. An interesting thing with this album is that even with the modal brilliance shining through in these tracks, the twelve bar blues format is very prominent in the songwriting. This stuck out to me as an example of having simplicity in song structure whilst showing colorful melodic and harmonic qualities. What a great album. FAVORITE SONGS: - So What - Blue in Green - Flamenco Sketches 4.75/5

This is an instant 5 for me. The evocative tones, groove for days, and phenominal orchestration are just to die for. So What has these little jaunts into different key centers, like trying on different coats at a store. Flamenco Sketches is a song with so much internal story telling it is impossible to ignore. This worst part is that the album ends. Bill Evans on the piano for most of the recording is such a treat.

I'll gladly listen to this album again. I'm not a big Miles Davis fan but I love Coltrane, Adderley, Evans, Cobb, and of course the bassist, Paul Chambers. Wynton Kelly on piano does a nice job on "Freddie the Freeloader" but Bill Evans is the comp chord king and his solos just flow like water. I love the conversations between the two saxophonists and Miles' trumpet. No question; this album belongs on this list even if you don't like or understand jazz. This is a master class in cool jazz.

Music that should be on that Golden Record they sent to space on one of the Voyager missions to communicate what humans are to aliens. That doesnt mean I would want to listen to it everyday or say it is my favorite, but you can tell that it is good and should be heard (especially by aliens).

This album makes me want to be a cooler person.

The rare album that is a commercial favorite and also beloved by aficionados. It's great as background music but also holds up to intense scrutiny. Everyone is in top form here and many of these compositions became standards. Plus, there's the whole modal jazz thing, which is fascinating if you care but beside the point if you don't. At the end of the day, this is beautiful music, well written, wonderfully played, and the perfect soundtrack for a rainy day or a cozy Sunday morning. One of the problems with albums that get dubbed as "the greatest" (like this one) is that it puts undo pressure on that album that the artists never intended. Miles was always trying new things, but it's not like he set out to create what would become the bestselling jazz album of all time. And labeling something as "the greatest" can't help but affect newcomers' attitudes towards that music. They might listen to this and not love it and then think, "Well, I didn't love the best jazz album ever, so I guess jazz isn't for me." Suffice it to say that there are many kinds of jazz, just like there are many kinds of rock and hip-hop, and just because Kind of Blue didn't wow you, doesn't mean something else won't. This was definitely a gateway album for me, but it might not be for you. The 20th Century gave us a ton of horrors, but it also gave us The Beatles and Miles Davis, so overall, a thumb's up.

Classic, always a pleasure

Does it even need an explanation?

Lovely Jazz. Have listened before.

the massive history and impact of this album aside, these are ~ chill jazzy beats to study too ~

i actually used this a couple of albums ago as a palette cleanser so now am just excited for the next recommendation🥰

Writing about this one seems to cheapen it, so I'll be brief. I listen to a lot of jazz as is and study it as an amateur musician, but even way before then this album absolutely spoke to me. Still does. Pure genius. Brilliant. I've already said too much.

What has not been said about this one? A masterpiece to have in any collection.

I've been into jazz lately and I've heard of Miles Davis before so listening to this album has been a wonderful experience. Gotta add this to one of my fav albums

Can't say I'm a listener of much free jazz but this album is probably the best introduction you could give someone to bring them into the fold. It keeps rhythm while bringing in a freestyle virtuosity that impresses rather than alienates. It holds together well as an album, too.

If I would find a way to be speechless when it comes to describing an album, I would be. But I can't. I can see why this is the most heralded album in the history of music, not just of its genre. An essential peak of a monumental career, with players as essential as the music contained who would go on to make legendary albums in their own right. No wonder why Miles wouldn't make diminishing returns of this sound for eternity, for he had new terrain to roam and bigger fish to fry. 1959, what an incredible year.

Needs no comment, the apex of jazz in my limited opinion!

One of the greatest recordings of all time. Bill Evans shines.

Gets better every time I listen to it.

I got really lucky and got to listen to this on a rainy morning at the beginning of fall. Absolutely beautiful. This kind of jazz has a soft space in my heart from growing up in Pittsburgh and watching Mr. Rogers. I'm verklempt just thinking about it.
