Reviews (page 12 of 13)
This was my introduction to Lorde. FTR I'm also somwhat out of the loop on modern pop music. My main takeaway from this was that Jack Antonoff has an even more distict sound that I had thought. This sounds like a Taylor Swift album with a different singer. Because of that, to me Melodrama was fast food pop music or something. A giant machine spit this out, along with all the Tswift records and what ever else. The reality may be that Jack Antonoff is insanely successful and the reason this sounds tired is because we've all heard all of his hit songs on repeat for 10 years. Lorde does seem talented and nothing about this is offensive, but I didn't connect with anything on here. Highlight was "Loveless" which was basically an outro. Cool we're getting records from 2017 - I could use more awareness of fairly recent hit albums.
This is a typical run-off-the-mill pop album with all of the musical clichés one can imagine. Even though it doesn't sound "bad" it is really quite boring and I'm sure AI could write very similar songs. Kudos the the fact that there is a theme across the album, the lyrics are OK, and Lorde's voice is more interesting than some - if it wasn't for the voice, most songs could be mistaken for other generic pop such as Taylor Swift. Much like the latter, I think I really like Lorde as a person and role model and they have a lot going for them, just not the novelty of their music. I can understand that its inoffensive nature, universal thematic, and pleasant sound sells. Nothing wrong with a plain old commercial pop album, it just won't get a high rating from me as a "must hear" album.
I had only heard her main hit and not a full album before. It’s not to say that I didn’t listen to the full album because the single wasn’t good, rather that I wasn’t pulled in by the single enough to listen to more. As this album doesn’t even contain that partial gem, there is even less reason to delve in. But having now done so, nothing ever rises above standard mellow pop fare. Nothing memorable. Nothing sonically enveloping. It’s an album I could have happily never listened to. There’s nothing bad about it, per se, only it sticks a mediocre landing as simple and uninteresting in favor of basic beats and forgetful lyrics.
Not my type of music. I did think the instrumentals were ok but i didnt like the lyrics. i really didnt like but i could see lots of other people loving it. 1/10
No need to complain that much, come on man
Whatever late 2010’s pop. Most of the album just blends together indistinguishably. This is what SO much gen z music is and I hate it (as a gen z’er I can say this). It’s the oh woah is me my life is so hard and sad melancholy drama bs. Her voice is fine and like two of the songs are decent but literally everything else is the same track after track.
Oh, Lorde. I like the cover art. I'm not a fan of her voice. It's not bad, but not for me. She seems to be a good songwriter, but this album isn't moving me. I'm thankful that I had the chance to hear it, but I most likely won't listen to anything else from her without being forced to do so. 2 rating.
It's a no for me for you dawg. Not a bad singer but it lacked structure and I struggled to keep paying attention. This seems to be a pattern for me with how millennials and Gen z approach music.
I wonder if I’d like this more if it was done with the Dap Kings as the backing band. I don’t object, I’m just not digging the backing/accompanying music.
Pre: I don’t know much about this album, but I have heard of the artist. Not 100% sure I know what to expect. After: Lorde’s voice is nice but a bit breathy at times. The lyrics aren’t really my thing but I could see how a young person might find more meaning in them than I do. Music is just fine, didn’t really find myself drawn in by much but it was mostly pleasant.
Unoffensive music that might run on the radio in the background all day long and that you've forgotten as soon as the song ends. No drama here.
Well, let’s put it this way. I got bored and started scrolling social media and the album ended and other artists started playing and I dint realize it for 4 songs. That is how forgettable this was.
Tolle Stimme, aber nicht meine Musik 2/5 Songs der Playlist hinzugefügt: Keine
Extremely dull album. Nothing stood out. And the breathy voice thing got old fast. They should really wait like five or ten years before adding anything to this list because nobody is going to be listening to this in the future.
I found songs on this album that I recognized and liked. They were also songs that were new to me that I enjoyed. It's a solid album overall but not always my cup of tea. Her voice reminds me of Ellie Goulding at times.
Another album I wanted to like more than I did. I generally like her singing voice, but overall I thought it was a dull album. Early on I thought to myself that this sounded similar to some Taylor Swift at points, and sure enough, same producer.
I didn’t mind this, but it’s pretty forgettable. There seems to be a swathe of artists currently who, to me, make basically the same sound.
Didn’t really know it was playing…
2.5
2- An ok pop album, but nothing groundbreaking
I guess Green Light was ok. Didn't really connect with this album. Was mostly annoyed by it at the end.
very uninteresting pop music doesn't help that she sounds like justin timberlake who hasn't hit puberty yet
its not bad but its just generic pop NNN
You really get a different perspective on this album after reading the 29-slide powerpoint on how this album is about Lorde and Jack Antonoff's [alleged] affair. Favorite song: The Louvre Least favorite: Hard Feelings/Loveless Knew before? No
Jack Antonoff was perhaps the worst person to produce Lorde. Bookends nicely, I guess, in the vein of royals, but everything in between is such a pale Antonoff-based imitation that it makes them worse.
What's with female singers and the breathy/throaty voices they put on! Ok as an example of the genre but nothing special; its well produced and she has a nice voice but its so generic in the tempo, style and structure. Some production electronics and arrangements seem to me more for effect than adding to or supporting the song and generally no variety in either the songs or subjects, overly self-centred. Did quite like 'Liability' though! Ok and listenable but it doesn't make me want to rush out and get anything else by her.
I liked the production - notice I like a lot of Jack Antonoff production. Probably enjoy that more than anything else going on here. Overall just feels uninteresting pop. Hardly terrible but nothing memorable for me.
Tiene bases parecidas a Billie Eilish, por ahí es más pop y no está a su altura.
I didn't much care for this album.
Meh! Almost gave it 1, but Supercut and Hard Feelings are ok, so it's a 2. Otherwise: meh
I mean, it has a few more quirks than late 2010s pop music, and it's clearly got more personal lyrics than a lot of it, but it doesn't really stand out to me as being all that much more innovative or unique. Very Tumblr-core
It's very well produced but it's formulaic bubblegum pop
Not the worst I've ever heard but not my vibe.
Sounds very generic
Melodrama is over-rated. The melodies are thin, and what's supposed to compensate, the words, are trading in teenage heartbreak territory so well-covered that no amount of sharp phrasing rescues it. It feels less like songwriting and more like angsty poems talked over late 2010s pop beats. Jack Antonoff's maximalist production was already starting to date by the time this came out, and it hasn't aged well. "Green Light" earns its energy, but one strong single doesn't redeem an album that mistakes emotional inflation for emotional depth. 5 out of 10, rounding down
there is a reason why this combination of songwriting and production has been so successful but it's not always for me
Some decent songs like "Liability", but take the pop radio format and just refine it in an album setting. I get why some people love it, but it isn't my type of music.
She's not very good
This album is okay but just does not appeal to me which is probably because it is not meant for my generation anyway. So for my listening preferences this gets just 2 stars or D as a rating.
I'm not sure about this one. Production wise it's pretty solid. Listenable. The vocal choice gets repetitive. Feels a little souless. It's not bad, just not for me. Kind of like a paste made of flour and water with a few sprinkles thrown in.
Sue me but this was boring
Fucking Lorde is such a narcissistic twat. I liked her hits OK until I went to see her live, and was literally spellbound by the lack of creativity, the lack of showmanship, the absolutely lifeless performance where all the while many of the young concert goers seemed to be in captivated. What spell had she put on them? It’s the first concert I actually walked out of within the first five songs because it was so fucking horrible.
All the songs sound like fillers.
Overly busy production and average songs. The singing really grates. Maybe this is a taste thing, but it's not a great album.
Geigh
It's ok
Pretty good sound.
OK but won't listen to it again
Not for me
Pretty much every pop album from the 2010's forward has been written by the same crop of people, using the same instrumentation in a completely commercialized effort to sell as much music as possible. The artists themselves are unique and interesting people. I loved Pure Heroine when it came out. Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, and Lorde are all interesting people and I respect them as artists, but damn if everything they put out is so forcefully crammed into the small box of 'sellable' production. I honestly really liked Jack Antonoff in Fun. and don't mind his production, but go listen to Reputation and Melodrama next to each other. This music is literally just picking the purple or pink backpack in sixth grade and deciding that it has a huge impact on your personality. That is literally true when you are young and impressionable, but that doesn't mean it's art. At the end of the day it's just Jansport manipulating human experience to turn the real process of self discovery into dollars. Ted Talk aside, this was an album that played through twice while I was in the same room. I can probably sing most of it back to you because that's how simple and catchy modern pop music gets, but could not tell you a single track title except that Melodrama was referenced in one of them.
Just sort of cliche and uninteresting The instrumentals are uninteresting She's a cool artist, but this is not that cool of an album
Not my thing
1001 Albums day 7 Taylor Swift at home. Favs: Liability, Perfect Places Least favs: ngl idc 47/100
Baffled by how this was the Lorde album chosen. Doesn’t hold a candle to her debut, Pure Heroine. This one is over-produced pop music. I sense that her production team is to blame for this blandness. Bring a break-up themed album it lacks much of the fierceness of the debut. At times this is downright whiny. This might barely be a three star album, but I will probably deduct one star because it is SUCH a letdown in comparison to her debut. I’m sad that Lorde is being represented by this uninspiring album. Honestly, you before you die must listen to her debut album and feel free to skip this one.
I'd rather listen to King Crimson. (The Louvre is a good song though.)
Overrated
Nada sorprendente lvd, no me gustó mucho.
Pleasant but I don’t believe this will survive the ages
Does me no harm. The most remarkable thing about this album for me is its coverdesign.
I'm giving this a 2. Not because I think it's bad music. It's excellent at what it does. But what it does is not for me. It's interstingly put together, more interesting than a lot her peers. But it's still that emotionally charged pop that just doesn't mean anything to me. That's a me problem ... but these are my scores. For me. They're not a diss.
Meh, 3/10- supercut Carrie’s this album
My daughter likes her and has seen here live so I gave this 3 listens around the house and on the main system. Didn’t really click with me musically or lyrically. There’s the odd clever turn of phrase and I can imagine live a lot of fans singing along with gusto but a 2 star from this 59 year old.
Helt okej, har bara aldrig lyssnat på Lorde. Bästa låt: Homemade dynamite
Helt okej popalbum, tyckte många låtar var lite tråkiga men vissa var ändå bra Bästa låt: Supercut
It’s too corny and Taylor swift-y for me
Didn’t hate it or like it one bit. It was a very neutral experience
Wholly forgettable
eh, not for me
No interest.
nope... niets voor mij... te veel van hetzelfde gezaag...
2.5 there were a couple of songs that I enjoyed but then there were some real overproduced, over fabricated stinkers
demasiado girlie para mi
I am familiar with some of Lorde’s hits who could escape Royals when it came out. I never listened to an album through or not sure if I know any other song by her. I like the album cover and recognize it. The album sounded like carefully calculated pop to me. She’s got a distinct voice that really leaves a stamp on her songs and I don’t mind it. She’s also got more creative lyrics than other pop sensations. I understand why it’s on the list but not something I’d return to as someone who enjoys some pop. I was ready for it to be over pretty soon into it. I’m not sure if I enjoy the Jack Antonoff marks on albums which is an epiphany to me, with maybe a couple exceptions.
Feels harsh considering Pure Heroine was my formative album. But this was just a little too Greenwich Village for my straight ass.
Felt one bit of one song, but mostly this vocal style is pretty unbearable. I wouldn't say I'm a Lorde fan, but a coworker used to play Pure Heroin at the office a lot and I did at least feel like that one had more of a unique sound, more stripped down, whereas this.. I mean, I respect Jack Antonoff but anymore it just feels like 'pop product'. Purple drink.
Oh man, this was hard going, so samey, awful vocoder noises over a bland electro-pop background. The vocals were just so bad and the whole thing was a mess from start to finish. I think the low point was the awful tom tom drums being played in some sort of demented Phil Collins tribute, maybe, I have no idea what the real intent was here? It was a little too boring to get 1 star, so 2 stars it is.
Nobody actually talks like that.
Boring, generic pop music

This was ok but subject matter didn't appeal to me. To quote her, she's 'a little too much'. Clearly talented though.
I liked one song, forget which, but overall was kind of meh.
Popmusik, angenehme Stimme, irgendwie zwischen Madonna und Cyndi Lauper, nur jünger, nett, gut fürs Radio...
It's fine I guess, just a bit bland. There are tons of other artists doing more interesting things lyrically, vocally, musically.
I enjoyed the lyrics, but this album didn’t really speak to me at all. 2.4 stars
Niks mis mee, zit alsnog gewoon goed in elkaar. Maar.. niet helemaal voor mij weggelegd. Rating: 6/10 Highlight: Green Light
I'm solidly Meh?
Her best song is on another album lol
Meh album don’t rate her
I didn't like this at all. Very very unremarkable.
Green Light 3 Sober 1.5 Homemade Dynamite 1.7 The Louvre 2.3 Liability 2.8 Hard Feelings/Loveless 1.8 Sober II (Melodrama) 2 Writer in the Dark 1.7 Supercut 2 Liability (Reprise) 1.6 Perfect Places 2 Score: 2.036363636
I'm feeling a little 'hey nineteen' about this album; it speaks to a time and place so alien to my own experiences that it's difficult to pull any emotional connection through the static. A supercut, you say? Sure. As with a lot of modern(ish) records, very little in its sound universe seems well defined. Swampy synth washes and murky beats rear out of the sonic fug, and the hushed vocals contribute to the impression that Melodrama is an unlit, smoggy, creepy thing. Not for me. And ain't it all a bit boring? Nothing to stir a soul nor shake a limb.
Not for me.
eh.
Meh Lorde for me
Look she's fine and all but meh
Not a bad album but I won’t be returning. 2.5
Proper end of season montage music
Pleasant enough but how can I, as a man, ever sit there and listen to music like this. 2.5/5
2.5 Maybe if I gave it more time I’d enjoy it more, but I’m not going to do that. Not for me this, too slow and odd.
Melodrama is a mixed bag, offering glimpses of potential but ultimately failing to captivate throughout. Lorde's lyricism, while occasionally insightful, often feels contrived and fails to establish a genuine connection with the listener. The overall sound of the album feels derivative, blending into the sea of generic pop offerings without offering anything truly distinctive. While not outright terrible, Melodrama fails to live up to its potential, leaving me feeling indifferent rather than enthralled. It's a forgettable effort from an artist who initially sparked curiosity and excitement, ultimately falling short of expectations. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None
Was slightly boring at times, Lorde always seems on the edge of being real cool but never quite lands. Was funny hearing the song from that meme, the one where she’s playing live and shushes the whole crowd from singing along
Hmm, I've never heard this performer sing before. I actually like the sound of her voice (don't know what she's singing about), but all the surrounding melange of instrumentation feels processed and artificial. I'd like to hear her sing an acoustic set. 2 stars for her voice.
Not my favorite style.
I remember having an interest in Lorde a few years ago. I think it was as a result of the single Royals which I really liked. But having streamed some other of her tracks decided she was a bit on the Brittany Spears side of pop music to retain my interest. Since then I’ve really got into Lana Del Rey and bought all her albums. As Lorde is often compared to LDR I was willing to give this album a serious listen. I can now see the similarities between the two. This is a well crafted album full of interesting ideas and I now realise mentioning Brittany Spears in the same breath is unfair as I think Lorde is trying to make serious and memorable music. Writer In The Dark is a good example and is the standout track. There are some other good moments but my same initial opinion that Lorde drifts over to the Gen Z poppy side too much for my liking still holds. I much prefer the darker side LDR brings to this genre which I think Lorde tries to achieve but fails as she is still trying to achieve chart success. And who can blame her?
If I wanted to hear a lady whisper witty things to a stripped back sound I'd have transitioned long ago.
Bit annoying
Green Light é boa DEMAISSSSS O vocal da Lorde é bonito, os arranjos também são legais mas eu acho pop muito genéricozinho
sorry lourde but i’m not feeling it
Teen girl music. Not for me
It was ok! It had its moments I really liked (‘Supercut’ stands out), and some other tracks where her voice just really annoyed me. A high 2.
Green light is class, the rest was OK.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SU0gFPMwP8 Who the fuck is forcing pop artists to sing like this. Generic boring pop. Factory produced. Another inauthentic album by Girlypop McIndustryPlant serial number Y3208327.
I wasn't sure what to expect with this record. I'd of course heard "Royals" but not much else from Lorde. It was okay. I didn't hate it but I also didn't love it. It's just not my cup of tea. Lyrically she's quite clever. Her lyrics had me chuckling a few times or brought a memory, but I wasn't *moved*.
***WARNING: Early-mid-40's-year-old-man rant incoming*** Here is something I don't understand about Lorde, and while we're at it, Lana Del Rey/Billie Eilish/Olivia Rodrigo/etc.: are they pop or not? In the "I think this might be pop" category, they win Grammys and sell out stadiums and are played on pop radio and have hits. On the other hand, they don't make songs that are fun to listen to. And isn't that what pop is, at its core? Fun songs that make you want to dance and sing along? Because I would not describe any songs by any of the artists I have named that way, except maybe "Royals". And - I totally get it - I am lumping Lorde in with other female artists around her age and dissing all of them for not making pop music. Which smacks of some kind of backwards attitude that men can make art but women have to make pop. But before I am totally canceled, back in my day we had Tori Amos and Fiona Apple, and before that there was, I don't know, Kate Bush? Those artists were making music that, for the most part, wasn't poppy, but had something else going for it, whether that was unique instrumentation or engaging lyrics or . . . something. And for me, most of Lorde/Lana Del Rey/Billie Eilish/Olivia Rodrigo's songs aren't pop and also don't have anything else going for them. They are just tinkling pianos and boring synths and I'm-14-and-this-is-deep lyrics. I like Tori Amos and Kate Bush and Bjork and PJ Harvey and Regina Spektor, so I think my I-enjoy-female-artists-even-when-they-aren't-all-that-poppy bona fides are firmly established. Therefore, I think that there may be some validity to this rant . . . possibly mixed with an unhealthy dose of misogyny and I need to really examine some of my assumptions and possibly do better. But, speaking from my current unenlightened state, I don't like this album. Also, fuck Lana Del Rey.
Thoughts before listening: I never really understood the hype on Lorde although "Royals" is a good song....I don't think it's on this album though. Pop music isn't typically my thing but I'm sure this will be fine. Review: Well right off the bat "Green Light" is recognizable and a very good song with an even better chorus, and "Supercut" was a fun track later in the album. The rest of these songs are just okay to me. I don't know if it's cause Jack Antonoff produces all of their albums, but a lot of recent female singers have a very similar sound...thinking of Lorde, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, etc. It's a lot of mid-tempo songs with lyrics that are more spoken/whispered than sung. This came before Taylor's folklore/evermore but the vibe is almost identical. This is a 2-star album.
I wrote one catchy song inspired by an old photograph of Baseball Hall Of Famer George Brett in National Geographic magazine and it became a monster smash and now I have an album on this list even though I haven't done anything since then. Oh, and that catchy banger isn't even on this album.
Same pop crap, same pop channel.
Some high points on this album but it's definitely not a consistent quality, high 2 overall.
Green Light is a banger! Couple other decent tunes but nothing close. Wish I liked it more.
like olivia rodrigo but boring
I wasn't overly impressed on first hearing. Sounded similar to many other young female singers. maybe it's me being an old fogey.
Not good.
Wertung: 1-2/5
Kinda ass 2/5
I maybe didn't give it a fair chance and paid more attention to work, but this one just went by without any moments I remember. Don't really feel the need to revisit. Will I listen to again: 1%
I expected a more distinct sound
Overall very bland feeling. Pure Heroine has much more interesting production, and a more distinct style/sound. Melodrama feels so much more like generic pop. Liability is ok.
I’m so so sorry but Lorde has never been for me. I can’t relate to her lyrics, I don’t enjoy her voice, and the production isn’t fun either. I can respect it/her!!! Just isn’t for me. Favorite song: Hard Feelings Least favorite songs: The Louvre, Writer in the Dark
Ok
A couple of interesting tracks, but mostly not my kinda thing.
Agradable voz
I really like the stripped down, voice-forward sound of Pure Heroine. This album is too techno pop for me which, to me, distracts from Lorde's voice. I understand all the decisions about sound were deliberate, but I don't care for the music. I think it distracts from voice and lyrics.
What's wrong with these people?
Not for me
Great voice, really good production. Sound like XXX with teenager lirics. A good pop album.
Sort of depressing.
Was ok. Sorta repetitive.
An Antonoff nothing burger
Electropop is not my thing - this album isn't horrible but overall because of the style it's just not my jam.
Quite good but it doesn't excite me much
An important artist to the evolution of AAA radio pop. A little surprised this album is on this list. Not as strong as her debut. It does feature her strongest song, Green Light, however.
Amazing production sounds great. Just not for me.
Ok but not really my taste
Sounds like so many of today's albums. Autotuned. Machine driven beat. Nothing stands out here. Would be hard to pick Lorde out of a cast of other singers.
Niih. Olihan se kai ok. Mut sit taas ei.
Liian kähee
Sings that annoying way
Lorde is aight 2.6
Kinda depressing and I didn't like her singing style like I used to before.
Got to admit, I expected more. Like Taylor Swift, I expected something a little more standout but it all felt slightly generic. I guess it’s not really aimed at people pushing 50…
objective late 2010's pop something good found in the sounds of the album hopefully not lost
2/5. Lorde is clearly trying to do too much after her success with albums that I actually enjoy: Pure Heroine and Royals.
Opzich oké, maar vind dat ze te modern is geworden. Vond haar oude shit met ‘Royals’ echt veel leuker
melodrama? more like meh-lodrama
This album made me feel like I was at a 17 year old girl’s birthday party. It’s definitely not for me and I won’t be listening again anytime soon.
More misses than hits, but the hits are solid
A little too slow overall. Supercut is the best song.
Too many songs sound the same. Not a fan of her voice - prob wouldn't listen to again.
Sober II was good. Overall not a bad album but not my preferred music. Maybe if I was an angsty teen or wanted to re-live my late teens early twenties I might vibe with the songs and lyrics more but as it stands I didn't connect with the artist or the music.
Thought the first song was decent, but overall, dance/pop stuff is just not my thing. Actually, it's pretty phuggen annoying. Seemed like everything just ran together too. What can I say? Not my kind of music and not the kind I would go out of my way to listen. I put her up there with swift and the twins. I hope like hell my Spotify overlooks his week and keeps all this stuff out of the random rotation. Bad week of albums. 2
2.5 I know she’s a musical icon, but I’ve always found Lorde to be kind of meh. Royals in particular is a song I’ve always found kind of boring, and anything else of hers I’ve heard has left me feeling whelmed. This is my first time giving one of her albums a full listen though, so I went in with an open mind, as I try to do with anything else on this list… and I maintain my opinion after. The first song Green Light is an enjoyable enough pop track, but it starts losing me very quickly from there. While there was more piano stuff breaking up the pop stuff than I expected, for the most part I thought everything kind of blended together. The only other song I found remarkable across my listening was Writer in the Dark, but mostly because the lyric “Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark” stood out to me as kind of cringey. But hell, with all the emo shit I listen to, I should probably be the last person to be calling a lyric out as cringey. The fact I walked away from this without any real takeaway made me think that maybe I just wasn’t giving it a proper listen, but when my Spotify started shuffling in songs afterwards from contemporary female indie artists like Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent, and Lucy Dacus, I started getting into a fun, musical groove, something I never found myself in during the listening of the actual assigned album. So, I think that validated my opinion that Lorde is kind of meh. Not my thing, but shoutout to Lorde for being my age and also being way more successful. I’d take being called meh too if it came with an $18 million net worth and over 5 billion Spotify streams.
Sorry not at all my music. I know some of her tracks that I like but this album is not my thing.
Lorde is an impressive songwriter, but this style of pop is not really for me.
I really really hate this singing voice
Artistissa on lupausta, mutta oli katsottava biisilistaa uudelleen muistaakseen hyvät raidat. Veikkaan, että tämä on myös tehokeinoineen kuulostanut vanhentuneelta 6kk julkaisun jälkeen.
Write and Supercut were decent but this was otherwise a lacklustre and boring album
It is not my age, when I was 15 or 20 I also did not like this type of music.
One appears not to understand what teenage girls like today any more than when one was oneself a teenager, lo those many yesterdays ago. Theoretically, one believes in the cathartic nature of the break-up records, but this is way too self-involved, the production too high-gloss (rather than human) and just not that interesting -- more mediocre than melodramatic. To put it in the lyrics' own terms, "too much for me." Best thing about the record is the cover.
I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt but I did not enjoy this album. I could see some of these songs being cool in a live setting like a festival or something but even then idk.
Teenage angst…not my thang.
Who is Anton? And why do I need to jack him off? This is background noise. Not unpleasant, but neither distracting nor compelling. I might listen to some Rilo Kiley after this. Infact I won't even get to the end of the album - after "Liability" I call it quits and listen to More Adventurous. I did go back later on to finish up, and actually the second half of the album was actually a bit better when listened to on headphones while walking. I guess with albums as recent as this, the production is probably set up to sound best on headphones while walking. Still couldn't recommend spending any actual time on it though.
I may make some enemies with this one but that's ok. I want to like Lorde more than I do, but I struggle embracing the vocal style in the zeitgeist where every vowel is 1 degree away from a straight up meow - as a Kiwi though she gets more of a pass from the people who pronounce no as "naor" - I don't think she's putting it on. I also don't think I'm the target audience for her music at all, and that's fine - bubblegum pop is not my bag, too saccharine for me to stomach - the lyrics are interesting but what she talks about don't resonate much with my lived experience generally, which makes it harder to form an emotional connection - I almost feel like a voyeur? maybe that's the intent though. I also can't stand Jack Antonoff's whole shtick so tbh this was a hard listen. RE: this album specifically - Green Light has a great hook. Sober sounds exactly like every single Emily King song (I guess that style of track is really having a moment this decade). Nice little homage to Born to Run & Madame George at the end of the Louvre. Liability is catchy, tried and true formula. I appreciate them taking some production risks on Hard Feelings/Loveless with those industrial sounds but it didn't work for me; just sounded dissonant. Every track on the back half of the record sounds like the type of music they play behind transition shots on the Bachelor or Love Island as the hunks/babes walk in slo-mo to the next setting and it didn't stand out.
Just not my kind of pop
Musically speaking, it's okay and Lorde is a great singer. That said, the breakup, nocturnal-romantic-party-teenage themes just won't do it for me.
Green Light, Liability, Perfect Places. Best lyric “but all that stranger would see, is one girl swaying alone, stroking a cheek.” Boring as fuck. Idc. I didn’t have to hear this.
Most of this was generic formulaic pop music that's been done way better. A few catchy songs but so many of these sound exactly the same. Generic lyrics too. 2.5/5 FS: Liability, Dynamite
Not my type of music at all, none of the songs stood out to me and overall just boring. Sounds pretty much the same as every other modern pop album although it does have good sound production Highlights: Green Light
Its sound allright
Erghh
While I dig the production, this style of music and vocals is just not for me. The concept album does not speak to me either.
The sort of album that I think sounds good but does very little for me
Meh.
I guess this is what would happen if Taylor Swifte's songwriters tried to write a Kate Bushe song. Maybe this passes as artsy for Gen Z. Probably inspired some really good tik tok dances lol. 2/5.
Why do they all sing in this nasal mockney way. Is there no one out there that has their own voice now just over-produced sameness
I enjoyed it more than I expected when I received the album this morning. However, it is still repetitive and too much standardized, especially compared to other stuff on the 1001 list. I like to receive new albums (after 2010), but I think that the quality of an album to be included in such a list as 1001 will always need to prove itself over time, and 5 or 6 years is not enough to really be considered an album to be listened to before die.
Not much drama, to be fair
Everything sounds the same. And very.... Idol/The Voice kind of sound to it (most of the singers that do well in these shows all sound kinda the same when they are finished).
Lorde has a lovely voice, it felt a bit wasted in this
I listened twice since I thought it sounded like someone but I couldn't figure out who. Madonna, Morissette, Aguilera (without the vocal range). No no no. I think I figured it out. It's formulae music that tries to sound like everything and anything that worked in the past. That's exactly what I'm looking for!
I like the vocal production on a few the tracks, where she lops her own back-up vocals, as in Sober. But overall there is a singing style that I'm not crazy about. Maybe Lorde is actually the creator of the style but it's more likely it's pop-radio-ballad-meets-R&B-style that was developed over the last couple of decades. The kind of music my nieces like, but not me :) I do like the song, Sober II.
Better than expected and better than the popular music that the mellenials listen to these days. It does get a bit formulaic at times though.
2.5
Ei nyt korvia särkevä millään muotoa, mutta aika mitäänsanomaton.
Eipä tässä mitään vikaa ollut, mutta vähän geneerisen olosta. Aika mainosmusan kuulosta osin 2/5
Oh Lorde Randy Marsh did it again!
Sådärlåtar och sådärproduktion.
Having never listened to this album, this was exactly what I was expecting when I read “pop album with Kate Bush influence”
Maybe I’m making a lapse in judgment but I simply cannot remember anything from this album except being underwhelmed. My bad
not really my thing, but good enough i guess
Weinig origineel afkooksel in het popgenre. Te veel overproductie
I think Lorde does a great job capturing the era of this album. Impressed it made this list in 2017.
Mediocre at his best.i just can't feel it, but I guess this is what kids like these days so I respect it 2.5
Never been a fan of Lorde’s voice/delivery. Good songwriting though.
It’s Lorde, you’ve already heard what she has to offer. Nothing on this album reaches the peaks of her big singles though
One must not be in the target demographic. It's all very, well, melodramatic, though one can't say he wasn't warned. Only by grading on the curve would this rise to the level of mediocrity.
- Green light: 9/10 - Sober: 6,5/10 - Homemade Dynamite: 7/10 - The Louvre: 7/10 - Liability: 8/10 - Hard feelings/Loveless: 7/10 - Sober II: 8/10 - Writer in the dark: 8/10 - Supercut: 6/10 - Liability (reprise): 6/10 - Perfect places: 7/10
melodrama is pretty accurate lol nothing really hooked me 2.5
Manic Pixie Dream Girl music.
Really didn’t like how clean it sounded. One or two good tracks though
I was expecting to be blown away by this...but...wasn't. Pretty good background music for working.
Slow, moody build up...crescendo! Slow, moody build up...crescendo! Rinse and repeat. Album full of 'edgy' X-Factor audition choices. Can imagine Louis Walsh saying "I like this girl, she's different".
One of those albums that I had never heard but felt immediately familiar - too familiar. Massive critical acclaim, which tells me I'm missing something. No tracks I was desperate to skip; and none I wanted to play again.
57/100: I wanted to enjoy this album, but I really, really disliked it. Every song sounded the same, and it wasn’t even a good sound. I don’t think Lorde is actually a good singer, which is a shame because she’s not a great songwriter either. Maybe I was already in a bad mood when listening to this album, but I think it might have ruined my day.
The album is just ok. I was not familiar with any of the songs and I wouldn't choose to listen to any of them again. It is pop music but 2017 pop music at that.
Like a lesser NFR.
Hmm no, too poppy for me.
Nothing to interesting pop. Liked Supercut but that was about it.
Monotonous...
Fucking LORDE
Ya ya ya
Not terrible, just not for me.
I forgot about Lorde and I was never that into her music tbh! I find her music a bit generic poppy crowd pleaser I guess but I only know the big hits. That means it was very interesting to listen to a whole album and I have to say I did find it boring. But I like her song-writing style if she did in fact write these songs and I'd be extremely impressed with myself if I'd written these songs. I don't like the way they're produced at all I think that's it and I don't find her voice particularly v interesting it's a bit generic to me. A song I really like is Supercut, something that stood out among the rest of this album!
Wasn't bad just not my thing. Was a one and done for me.
Forgetable - exceedingly average and a little too pretentious The whole album blurred together into one long and uninteresting piece of elevator music
worst album
sad girl stuff, eh
It’s an ok album by Lorde. She has a few good pop songs on this one. However it seems after a couple listens that this doesn’t hit the same levels as her first album and feels a bit more regressive due to the complaint nature. The production is decent and for modern pop it’s better than other artists. Still just ok though 5.2/10
I have this and it's nowhere near as good as her debut. It's pretty dull, if I'm being honest - nothing on it really grabs me in any way. I will give it another go though, since it's popped up in this challenge...
From https://www.vice.com/amp/en/article/pkyqkv/cursive-singing-tiktok-trend-explained “…cursive singing or "indie singing" – a style characterised by diphthongisation, wherein vowel sounds are stretched beyond what is necessary. The typical cursive vocal will resemble a child mid-tantrum trying to articulate their distress but ever so slightly missing the mark, with many phrases being incomprehensible. For example, "flood" becomes "floyuid", "time" becomes "toyiuem" and so on.”
Nothing entertaining or even remotely interesting about this album.
Mellow some drama, but mostly the same few song ideas swashing around like a shoe in a dryer. Song writing is aight I guess but can't remember any of it as the song is over. Still better than a lot of computer-/committee-generated pop content in recent years.
Bit more boring than expected
2.8 - I respect the artistry but I really did not enjoy this record. For one, Lorde’s breathy and nasally lisp grates on my nerves - she sounds like she needs to blow her nose. This sounds like the soundtrack to a musical about teenage nightlife, played by actors in their thirties.
At her best she sounds like Kate Bush, who blazed her trail more than 30 years before this album came out. At her worst it's just more contemporary pop product that could work well on the sales floor of any major clothing retailer. The album is definitely appropriately named. I don't know if that's her way of pulling a Led Zeppelin and turning what was originally used as criticism into a badge of honor or what. If so, I respect that, but it's a sort of lazy melodrama. The music has these sweeping dynamics and everything but her voice kind of stays in what must be her comfort zone with this ever present whine to it that I just can't endure for a whole album.
I'm sure it's really good pop, given Lorde's reputation in the music world. To me, however, it just sounds like any other pop record. I really enjoyed El-Ps remix of supercut though!
Ya ya ya this is really mediocre and doesn't deserve to be included on this list ya ya ya.
This LP was a disappointment to me in 2017 and remains so to this day. I'm not going to get into an Antonoff hate rant (there's plenty of discussion on that already in these reviews), but for the follow up to "Pure Heroine"'s dark instrumentals, encompassing production, and intoxicating feel overall to be so flat and lifeless is just depressing. This album fades into the background, doesn't demand attention as its predecessor did - each song is so overengineered and wrapped in such a thick layer of production gloss that it goes down without a thought, each track another 'perfect' pop song without much personality or any distinguishing features. The continuing homogenization of music does nothing but disappoint, and this LP is unfortunately a good example as to why.
Wee bit disappointed in this. Lorde is a bit more interesting than the average popstar and Green Light is a banger but it doesn't really go anywhere after that.
I'm not really feeling this album. I don't particularly care for Lorde's vocal style. Musically, the production is fine, but it's formulaic and fairly bland. All I'm taking away from this is a mild sense of annoyance. "Fave" Songs: The Louvre, Sober II, Homemade Dynamite
Sometimes I listen to modern pop and I just feel old and out of touch. this is one of those occasions
Meh.
There's kind of a whole subgenre of pop that just sort of consists of "woman with nice voice sings over piano" and I'm not that into it. Bonus negative points for Hard Feelings/Loveless having a section that consists entirely of annoying sounds.
Ultimately too poppy and her voice isn’t strong enough to hold my interest. Mostly rudimentary lyrics. Like the little mouth explosion in “Homemade Dynamite.” “Liability” is sweet. Rhyming “drama” with “melodrama” knocks off two stars. “Supercut” sounds like an extension of “Green Light.” “Perfect Places” is great, love the synth.
Pop-by-numbers.
Its a nope from me, whinge music.
Pop music, nothing too revolutionary.
I am not familiar with the LORDE, but aware of her existence. What little I have heard from her does not impress me or make me interested in her music. After listening to MELODRAMA. My first impression is my usual first reaction … I was not impressed and they was to be expected. Musically and vocally, she sounds uninteresting to me. The type of music, Electropop, does not have staying power and is not catchy or different enough for me to enjoy. Usually, I give an album about three more listens to see if musically or vocally something might grow on me. I decided to skip the repeats and concentrate on the lyrics since the title, MELODRAMA, seem to indicate that the lyrics might be more worthwhile to take an interest in. Lyrically, the lyrics are a little stronger than the music, I can see the repetitiveness in the lyrics to suggest something bigger. Overall, since unimpressed with LORDE and MELODRAMA. I see a similarity musically and vocally with TAYLOR SWIFT’s 1989. I like TAYLOR SWIFT a lot, but IMO 1989 is Taylor’s worse album. Lorde seems like a flash in the pan pop star. This does not speak to me about my life now or when I was twenty. In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, MELODRAMA is her one and only entry. Rate Artist: LORDE (2.5) Rate Album (Year): MELODRAMA (2017 Original) (2.5)
I don’t get this selection. Her debut album was much better.
Did not like
At least I know what Lorde sounds like now. First time I've actively listened to her and also the last time. I just don't care for this music.
If you've heard the song "Royals", you've heard this album. It's pretty unadventurous. She's not a bad writer, but there's no exploration of range or melody or rhythm. Didn't add.
I saw her in the festival circuit supporting this album. It’s not really my thing but she clearly has talent. Nothing on this album really stood out to me though, all just brooding love lost lyrics.
Never really cared for her voice. Songs were boring
kind of lame, the whole point of the album, as a singer, was her vocal performance and it didn’t change at all throughout the whole album, she feels like a one trick pony. she has a nice voice but it’s kinda boring after a few songs. I’ll give it a 3/10 pop isn’t for me
Not my cup of tea...but some ok sounds
Kann man prima Pixar Filme mit vertonen. But not my cup of Melodrama. 1.6
Ik hoor niet wat hier nou zo bijzonder aan is.
It's not too bad, surprisingly, but just not my kind of thing.
Better than average pop record, but doesn't do much for me personally.
Was kinda embarrassed to be listening to this, but it’s not too bad. Fell off at the end, feels empty.
meh
2 saves sur 11, sans aucun interet, shanta Billie Eilish, ça sera un 2/5
Pop moderno é muito questionável, este demonstar alguma qualidade mas é ofuscado pelo gênero em que se insere. Nota:3/10
Alright, just pop. First track was catchy. Prob a 2. Also, feels like Billie Eilish prob tried to sing like this girl.
Not too bad.
Best wel prima album, Lorde heeft mij nooit helemaal lekker aangesproken maar kan het wel waarderen
Not a big fan.
Lorde is fine enough I guess. I don’t know if she’ll still be well-known in 5-10 years. This record is mostly forgettable
Some interesting bits but ....
Trying to keep an open mind about these albums but i have NEVER liked lorde
I normally like pretentious whiny music, but this has way too many painful teenage cliches for me
Not impressed, Randy Marsh.
Inexcusably awful. If a breakup is so bad it inspires you to write an entire album, I would expect that listening would be an emotionally charged experience. Instead, I got some bullshit from the pop-slop factory and it sounds like this lady didn’t even experience any of the events described in the lyrics. I don’t want to listen to 40 minutes of half-hearted pathetic little ““““sad”””” indie girl shit.
Creo que el pop es de mis géneros menos gustados, honestamente, pero éste álbum en particular no me gustó para nada. Rescataría: Writer In The Dark y Perfect Places.
Antonoff. Sounds exactly like the Taylor swift records.
Meh
I did not find this particularly interesting.
If she sang in a different language I'd enjoy it more. The lyrics are bad.
Ok, so the wife strays on the televisual entertainment every now and then after a hard's work will sneakily put on something like Emily in Paris or Younger. At the denouement of an episode when they hug and something has been learned, or they are walking in the rain or looking out wistfully on a sunset in an urban setting they play one of these songs. So you know it will be low key, quietly contemplative, some pianissimo, then it BUILDS TO AN EXHULTANT CRESCENDO AS WHATEVER GRIEF HE DID IN THE BEDROOM IS DISSED AND ORDER IS RESTORED! Phew, nearly got into that just thinking about it. In terms of songwriting the 21st century has lost lost the art of surprise, how strange the change from major to minor, there's no move to a minor seventh nothing. And the trite miserable been there done that lyrics, spare me. What a load of hackneyed rubbish, and I don't care what context this has emerged in and no I don't know who she is and no I don't care. And yes she no doubt has a gazillions hits, it can fuck off.
Move along, nothing to hear here
Boring and stupid
Gave up halfway through, just awful
My sister likes this, so I’ve already heard it far more than I ever wanted.
There isn’t too much out-and-out pop cack on this list, but this definitely falls into that category. Not sure what the critics are thinking with this one.
generic popslop
I really don’t think it’s cool to hate on lorde but she leaves us no choice. I like her in theory too - her whole dancing like nobody’s watching bit (not in a Taylor Swift “this is me at my most vulnerable brought to you by AMEX” sort of way but an actual sincere way that I believe) but it’s just too bad that she does in fact suck I will say this album clearly made a fucking impact on pop music. I assume this is one of the first few instances of Olivia Rodrigo ultra-specific songwriting (IMO the worst thing to happen to pop and indie in the last couple decades). The production is obviously quite ambitious for a pop record which I know is partly why this part of the 1001 canon I feel myself dozing off and enjoying it a bit at times (at least not hating it) but a lyric goes by and I am reminded of the insanely cheugy lyrics and cringey delivery
shit
More Randy Marsh and less Taylor Swift.
Could be any one of a number of female pop singers. Maybe it's the lyrics that make it special. Who knows. Because the production is so generic I won't be spending any more time listening. I gave Mars Volta 1* yesterday but at least they were trying to be themselves. Lorde isn't even trying to do that. 1*
nah
geit so
come ascoltare ellie goulding, concettualmente la stessa cosa inascoltabile per me
