Buenardooo amé
it must have been a religious experience to hear Janice perform live. Truly an amazing album. The band also excels, setting up a forceful platform upon which Janice can shine.
Debated wether I would give this a 4 or 5 then I listened to it. It's a seminal blues rock record
I'm so glad that the album is as good as the cover art makes it look like it's gonna be. There's definitely a visual aspect to music that gets ignored a lot despite how much it can influence the listening part of music. One of my favorite recent memories was seeing By Storm in concert (incredible band, check out their new-ish album, My Ghosts Go Ghost) because of the lighting. All of the lighting came from under them, I noticed it damn-near immediately. That and the fog machines they used had this insane visual effect to it, like they're playing in a void. Even the more innocuous stuff like the color of a record has an effect on the listener, especially now that black records aren't the standard like they were when this album came out. Speaking of the cover art, fun fact: the artist refused to take any money from Columbia Records for the art, saying, and I quote, "I don't want Columbia's filthy lucre." What a badass. All of this isn't to discount the actual music, by the way. The music is incredible. For crying out loud, Janis Joplin is the lead singer. That's like an automatic 5 stars. I wish I could put half as much energy into anything as she does into her singing. That and those insane instrumentals. That guitar tone at the start of Ball and Chain had me tearing up. Damn thing goes beyond the Blues Stank Face™, it nearly made me fall out of my chair. It feels like one of those rare albums that not even the band that made it could replicate if they tried. It's incredibly hard to find an album that's this perfect on this many different fronts.
Ooooooff janis' voice hits you right in the guts. That rasp, that honey. Wish she outlived her 20s - incredible talent, terrible disease. That band & guitarist are fucking serving the most elite kind of cunt. Lucky the wind didn't change otherwise it would be stuck in stank face for the rest of my life.
one of the best and most fascinating albums i have ever heard
Man this fucking rules. I could listen to 10 more albums. The vibes and groove is perfectly complimented by Janice Joplin's voice. 5+
Even more than half a century later, Janis's voice sounds like Living Fire! It Burns! Piece Of My Heart is still one of the great rock and roll songs. 5 stars
Funny to get this right after Jefferson Airplane, another band straight out of the San Francisco psychedelic rock scene, but I enjoyed this one a lot more. Janis Joplin's voice is electric, what a talent. Standouts: Piece of my Heart, I Need A Man To Love
Joplin's vocal delivery make this a very memorable listen. Great album that I'll definitely revisit again.
A perfect blend of a very good band with a vocalist that blasts the top layer off of you and pulls out the core of your being. Janis isn't a pretty listen but has something so pure it goes deep inside
I've always loved Janis. The world will never have another voice like this.
Big Brother was always my preferred band supporting Janis and for that reason this is my favorite of her released albums, with Pearl running a close second
This is the sound of the psychedelic 60's. This is the bass guitar and Janis is the voice you think of when this music comes to mind. I liked "I Need a Man to Love" and "Flower in the Sun" the most for the lesser-known songs. I'm on a hot streak but another 5 stars.
Of course Joplin is phenomenal, but you shouldn’t sleep on the rest of the band, as they are great too.
With a list loaded with a bunch of white guys who wanted to be blues players, this is where it's at. This is rock and roll. This is drunken, blues soaked guitars with feeling. Beyond that, what we have here is a perfect example of the '60s. From the Crumb artwork, to the fake "live" additions, to the three covers on this album. It's just great. Oh, Sweet Mary is probably the only lull in the album, but while you know Piece of My Heart and Ball and Chain, Turtle Blues and Combination of the Two really shine. Grab a beer, sit on the deck and put this on. Can't go wrong.
One of the greatest albums of all time. I wore this record out in my youth. Listening to it now it more than holds up. From the first shucka shucka opening percussion it explodes with a mix of joy, sorrow and wistfulness. Janis’ voice is extraordinary moving from sweet high notes to gravely punctuation seemingly effortlessly. The album just manages to pass the “no skips” rule. Oh Sweet Mary doesn’t really need to be there. It feels like a 1960’s “everyone is important” moment where they allow the rest of the band to take center stage while Janis sings backup. It’s fine but every other track is great. The Spotify version has bonus tracks. They are not included in this review because they were not on the album. They are nice to listen to but would bring the overall quality of the album down if included.
I have always liked Janis Joplin but was not aware of this album. Like it very much. A good choice for this list.
A perfect bit of late 60s blues rock. Janis was incomparable.
One of the best psych rock albums. The missing link between the Butterfield blues band and Led Zeppelin
Awesome album!
And feel more. Primally screaming words not heard hitherto. Unleashing a box, sockin' ya, knockin' ya. Don't ya cry, but feel more.
Such a great album acting as a cornerstone for the psychedelic rock genre. Janis Joplin obviously has an amazing voice with so much force behind every lyric. I'll already own this album and listen to it fairly regularly, but it was to revisit today as it had been awhile. The only downside of this album is the cover art which has multiple depictions of black face and while I don't think it was designed with malice (most likely it is satire), but that doesn't change the fact it is uncomfortable. I usually flip the cover to the picture of Janis of the back when I spin it. Favorite Track - Piece of My Heart Least Favorite Track - Turtle Blues ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Gorgeous album art. On top of that, this album was just so much fun. Janis Joplin killed it, and the songs were great. Almost felt like a jam band, but I actually liked Favorite Songs: I Need A Man to Love, Piece of My Heart
I took some time off from listening to music, so coming back to this was such a warm welcome! Loved every moment.
This is an absolute beast of an album.
Piece of my Heart también es buenísima.
Dva bangerja, tko rekoč, po pa the fucking art that is "Summertime". Eden teh komadov, k men res nardi v trenutku filing poletja. "Piece of My Heart" literally ma kos mojga srca (lol, morm nehat kadit, ko poslušam... Nah.). Pozabila sm, kok je "Turtle Blues" hud. Ma, fak, kok so vsi na konc dobri.
Very great album. I do love this kind of psychodelic rock and this album is great example of this genre. This was first album where i heard Janice Joplin beside her solo acapella and she was great. Really love this album and will listen more of the band and songs from this album in future)))
What an incredible album. Funky and gritty guitar solos with Janis Joplin’s gravelly voice fronting, just works so damn well. It’s pseudo live jawn and overall just raw, soulful, and electric. Amazing.
It's a bit basic but I'm a fan.
love that lady
Their second album. Their last with Janis Joplin before she went solo. Rock / Psychedelic Rock / Blues. Does it get any more freakout fuck the power acid Rock than this!? Janis Joplin's vocals are gravely and aggressive, the Bluesy guitar sounds great too. Piece Of My Heart is a stone cold classic song. The faux live sound works for me. I liked and enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
Janis Joplin!!!
Unbelievable. I get 40 albums that make me want to quit and then I get something like this pure genious
First time listening to Janis Joplin Wow My favorite was ball and chain and i need a man to love
i've already listened to this a thousand times LMFAO i even have it on vinyl but i guess one more time wouldn't hurt. janis joplin is legendary and whoever says otherwise will be dealt with
Big Brother & Holding Company went from semi-obscurity to becoming bonafide stars with the addition of a young woman who was raised on blues greats and found comfort in singing folk in Janis Joplin. Her voice fit perfectly on this album. This album followed their performance at the Monterrey Pop Festival which was quite possibly one on the best festivals ever. They drop this album with fake crowd noise and it’s amazing. Janis’ voice fits the playing so well. The band play amazing and switch between rock and blues throughout. This would be their last album together but at least that made magic here. I had always kind of avoided Janis Joplin because of her voice. Today I listened and understood that her voice was important to the songs and made them that much better.
done
Such a great album and such a great cover by Crumb. I was surprised to learn that Ball and Chain is the only actually live track, but what a scorcher that one is. The whole album has withstood the test of time.
Great record. RIP JJ
Excellent rock album
4.5 stars... Not perfect, but better than most!
Powerful and energetic
Cheap Thrills sounds like chaos captured at exactly the right moment. It is raw, loose, and completely unfiltered, an album that feels alive in a way very few records ever manage. There is no polish here, no attempt to tidy anything up, just a band playing on instinct and emotion, and trusting that intensity to carry everything through. What elevates it to something special is the sheer force of personality at its centre. Janis Joplin does not perform these songs so much as tear through them, her voice sounding ecstatic, wounded, reckless, and euphoric all at once. The band matches that energy, never smoothing the edges, never pulling back, letting the music lurch and surge like it might collapse at any second. Tracks bleed with feeling rather than precision, and that is exactly why they hit so hard. By the time it ends, Cheap Thrills feels less like an album and more like a moment that could only have happened once. It captures freedom, excess, vulnerability, and abandon without ever feeling posed or self-aware. Everything here feels necessary, immediate, and true to itself
Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? 🤔 Would buy on Vinyl? ✅
JAY to the AYE to the EN EYE ESS!! 5
Anything with Janis Joplin banging the vocals out is top notch, so this gets full marks
One of the best albums from the 60s hands down. Showcases the unique and amazing talents of Joplin. Fun jangly guitars. Live. Can't be beat. I don't usually go for the summer of love nostalgia records, but god damn.
This album is produced to sound like a live record. Whilst that gimmick might seem strange at first, the loose playing of the band and the feeling that everything could come off the rails at any given moment makes the concept work. The whole record feels like a party. Most of the tracks are covers, but they make them their own. 'Piece Of My Heart', 'Summertime' and 'Ball And Chain' are all essentially Big Brother & The Holding Company songs despite them not being written by them. If Janis Joplin's gravelly vocals aren't your cup of tea, then Cheap Thrills might not be a great time for you. Joplin's screams makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and the distorted guitar parts are loud and sleazy. These guys channel the blues better than Led Zeppelin ever could (I say that as a big Zeppelin fan!).
Ikke hørt om dette bandet før. Blues rock. Har hørt Piece of Heart (“I want you to come on, come on (…) and TAKE IT!”) før, men de resterende låtene er nye bekjentskaper. Eksempelvis minner Oh, Sweet Mary om en tidlig Joy Division-utgivelse, mens introlåten Combination of the Two gir gode surfevibber. Top 3: Ball and Chain, I Need a Man to Love, Piece of My Heart
Album #37: Cheap Thrills - Big Brother and the Holding Company Genre (W): Blues rock, acid rock, psychedelic rock Singles: Piece of My Heart I have listened to this album once before. Thoughts?: Rest in Piece, Janis Joplin. I love how this album sounds like a live album, but is really a studio album. Janis Joplin’s voice, while not the smoothest, has a lot of power behind it. I think the power shaped rock music from this point, I can hear Robert Plant’s voice in Janis Joplin’s. Favorite songs: All of it!!
So good
Easy 5 stars right here
te amo janis
This is Janis Joplin going all out, and I love it with every ounce of passion she poured into it. The music more than holds its own, too: there's some stellar guitar work here. The songs themselves are fairly straightforward, but the performance elevates them into one of the era's defining works.
Janis Joplin
Lot of fun, old school big band rock
Ball and chain, summertime are my favorites. Love Joplin thorough enjoyed every song
super fun! good energy, needed it for a time like now.
Combination of the Two I Need a Man to Love Summertime Piece of My Heart Turtle Blues Ball and Chain
Quintessential Joplin.
This really gets you movinnn wooooooo
Ball and Chain alone earned this 5 stars.
I really liked this album, love the blues and the guitar work. Janis is always amazing. Piece of my Heart is so amazing. Not sure I loved the pipped in crowd noise, but it does make an impact. I'm torn between a 4 and a 5 on this one, but I haven't had a good album in a while, so It's going to get the 5.
Best rock album! Janis Joplin is a legend. Her voice is a definition of rock
Amazing album. Great vocals, I love the emotion in her voice. Great album cover as well.
Great album
Stunning debut. Janis Joplin, unforgettable shooting star
This is a classic. One of the best of the psychedelic era. Just too much good songs.
I honestly have never heard of this one before, which I’m somewhat ashamed of. I’ve been meaning to actually, like, listen to some Janis Joplin albums, though, and this is her, so I’m glad this one was generated. The album cover is the first thing that really jumps out at me—I mean, how can it not? It seems like a huge inspiration for Green Day’s Dookie—I mean, they did both come from the Bay Area—this one’s just a bit…edgier, I guess. The vocals are amazing. Really impressive range and energy. The whole album feels like it was recorded live—which, apparently, it partly was. It’s definitely somewhat of an acquired taste, but I like most of it. I also think anyone interested in music history should listen to this one—or anything else with Janis Joplin, obviously. Also shout out to the guitar solos. Specifically the one in Summertime. The influence of this album is immediately recognizable—Amy Winehouse, Alanis Morissette, Joan Jett, Fiona Apple, Hole.
Wow! New fav loves Janis Joplin’s Summertime
The powerhouse vocals, the bass, the guitar… it’s all perfect and a true testament to Janis’s passion for music and life. Such an important piece of music history!
Amazing album. Joplin was more of a presence than just a voice. It’s also a solid blues rock band that almost feels like they could stand on their own without Janis. Until Oh, Sweet Mary, which leans into psychedelic rock and doesn’t utilize Joplin much at all. The flaw there, however, is less not using such a powerful singer and more straying away from what makes them a good band. But man, Janis, what a voice.
Raw, powerful and one of the best album covers of the decade
Didn’t realize that those songs were from that album. Stacked track list. 10/10 would recommend
The 60s sound of Big Brother/San Francisco sound just outstanding. And on top of that, Janis Joplin to scream/wail her soul to the heavens. I've done a trip or 3 listening to this album plus a few other jam bands which are perfect music to allow the mind to meander into the wide wide universe. Happy time and happy trails. 5 trippin' stars
This was amazing, not sure what made it so good but a truly amazing album.
Absolute gem. Never heard of them before!
peak
I had no idea that Janis Joplin was in a band. I always thought she was a solo artist. The music is a perfect blend of funky blues and Janis has the perfect voice to sing these songs. Favorite song: Piece of My Heart
She’s got soul
JANIS! here is the first member of club of 27. c
Janis! Piece of My Heart alone gets this album 5 stars. But the mix of Janis’ bluesy vocals and the band’s 60s psychedelic rock is fantastic throughout.
Janis Joplin was amazing.
Classic 60s soul/blues/rock. There is no other voice that compares to Janis. Simply stunning.
One of my favorites. I love Janis!
excellent music, janis can really sing
Well this album has blown me away. For context I'm age 32 and do love a lot of older music. The musicianship is simply outstanding. The dynamics of so many of the tracks here, never quite knowing where it's going to go. And goes without saying Janis Joplin shines here. I'll admit I hadn't heard much of Joplin (or hadn't heard of this group) but everything here is up my street. The drums are thunderous and keep a ridiculous pace, the bass is solid and shines in its own right with freedom and creativity. The guitars speak for themselves, wailing solos mixed with pure emotion. "Summertime" is haunting and stunning at the same time.
Lacks earworms, but has unique sound that exudes vibe, atmosphere and live energy. Album as a whole is balanced and memorable, but it means songs stand less on their own. Since this is albums and not songs reviews, it gets a high score.
Janis, my love. The more I listen to her albums, the more I appreciate her. Her voice is the standout thing here, and is still one of my favourites of all time. It's unique. I read a theory that little kids love the Frozen soundtrack so much - specifically Idina Menzel's vocals - because Elsa's singing hits a particular frequency or resonance or something like that that just sounds transcendentally brilliant to little kids' ears. It's almost certainly bollocks, but I do think something like that applies to me when it comes to Janis Joplin. Her voice is shrieky and raspy in just the right way to feel incredibly rewarding to listen to? I dunno, I just really get emotionally engrossed every time I listen to her. The whole package is great here - the songs, compositions, musicianship. It's an all time classic album.
Janis Joplin’s powerful lead vocals take the listening experience to a whole new level. The backing vocals add a beautiful color to the songs, and of course, the piano and guitars are everywhere, filling each track with pure energy. It’s a true classic of rock music. That wild spirit runs through all her performances, and track number 4, “Piece of My Heart,” is one of those songs everyone from a certain generation recognizes instantly. It became a major hit single. Track number 2, “I Need a Man to Love,” hits you right away — what an entrance! Then there’s “Summertime” (track 3), where Joplin takes the Gershwin classic and turns it into pure, aching soul. Nobody could pour emotion into a song the way she did. For anyone curious, the album feels like a live show, but only “Ball and Chain” came from a real performance. The rest of the tracks had audience sounds added later to create that same raw, concert-like vibe. And the album cover deserves a mention too. It was designed by American cartoonist R. Crumb, who became famous for his iconic character Fritz the Cat. This album was the band’s last work with her. Her solo career would bring us a handful of great songs and unforgettable albums. To me, Janis Joplin represents emotional intensity and rebellion. Say no more — the album is fantastic, and she remains one of the greatest of all time.
Would have LOVED to see them live.
I love this album so much!
First half of the album is perfection. JJ’s growl NOURISHED me. Flower in the Sun also made me feel some type of way. That little guitar part - dododo dododo + the vocals + the bass, ok let’s be serious ALL OF THE PIECES come together to make magic. Also, also she died on Oct. 4…. Was I her in a past life????????????
Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: I Need A Man To Love, Summertime, Piece of My Heart I have never heard of Big Brother & The Holding Company, but I have heard of Janis Joplin, and when I read that this band and Janis are associated with The Grateful Dead, I was excited to say the least. And man, this album did not disappoint: Experimental, psychedelic rock with slamming vocals from Janis. :chefs_kiss: Excellent album cover. I also really enjoyed discovering that Eminem sampled Summertime in The Slim Shady LP's Rock Bottom. That was cool.
Awesome awesome album. Love Janis Joplin, an artist I didn't listen to before this project. Incredible energy and pipes. Not a single miss. Welcome back to the 5 star club, Janis and Co.
These guys came to rock and they understood the assignment.
Oh yeah her voice scratches the itch in my brain
Huge fan of Joplin's vocals, this was an awesome album
Nice history behind this album. Canned crowd noise. Janis Joplin! A 4? And what a cover. Open, a 5. Way too many hits on here.
Janis Joplin might just have the best voice in music. So real. And so much emotion.
What a classic
Sex, Dope and Cheap Thrills was to be the original title, but Columbia records took issue with the album title & it was shortened to Cheap Thrills. The cover art one of the most iconic in rock history was done by underground comix living legend, Mr. Robert Crumb. Rarely has an album cover captured the music within so perfectly. And what of the album? Hard blues acid rock with big bombastic cooking vocals by Janis Joplin (who joined Big Brother the previous year) backed by Big Brother and the Holding Company at their ever loving prime. Essential stuff! Get it before it gets you!
Discazo
Janis Joplin was one of the greats, and this album affirms it. You’re telling me she had this vocal range at 24?? the feeling she communicates, the rawness to it all, but the control — unmatched. We saw a lot of girlies shredding in their silk dresses at all things go this weekend, and I like to think it has a direct lineage to Janis. Vocals on Piece of My Heart go crazy, and the shred intro to silky vocals on Ball and Chain 😮💨 This album takes me back to sitting in the back of my dad’s blue Toyota pickup and being “educated” in all the rock greats on long drives. I’m glad Miss Janis was one of them. Changed the game, gone too soon. Also learned in my research she was the one who insisted the album cover stay a cartoon and for that she is, yet again, an icon.
Love this album,
Classic album with Piece of my Heart being a song I was raised with. I can't imagine what music Janice would have created if she had lived longer, but thank goodness she recorded what she did. Her voice is so unique and easily identifiable. Tragic end to a talented musician. As for the album, I loved it. Great album through and through.
Very enjoyable but due to the recording capabilities in that day and age, there were voices from the crowd that were audible throughout several cuts. Not a deal breaker but it dampened an otherwise great performance by the first female rock star: Janis Joplin. I'll probably revisit this one and keep an eye out for it when next I go crate digging!
Best Song: Piece of my Heart I think technically I can say that this is a first time for me. However, I have heard every song on here dozens of songs, just not in this form. Greatest hits albums can be both a blessing and a curse. This is quintessential 60's music with one of the greatest singers ever. 5/5.
First time listening it in full. Expectations were big and it didn't dissapoint me. Janis is good. Loved this album.
A classic rock album. Time and mimicry may have stripped it of some of its originality, but it was a very fun listen nonetheless. Joplin does an amazing job on the vocals
Hard not to give anything with Janis Joplin a 5, her voice is so iconic of the late 60s and of a whole cultural phenomenon. Never been a voice like it since.
I got a new toy to listen to my albums when in my home office, and this album was a great one for testing it out. A fantastic live album that made me feel like I was in a grassy field surrounded by 1000s of muddy hippies. Peace and Love.
Nice
A fantastic blues-rock album. I used to prefer her solo albums, but Cheap Thrills may have become my favorite one thanks to its raw and unapologetic vibe. An instant classic ! I see people talk about « psychedelic blues », but there’s nothing really psychedelic here (except maybe the amount of LSD and psilocybin the band was probably taking at the time) – it’s just excellent blues with a Summer of Love twist. The band itself is all right, although not on par with Janis Joplin’s performance. Janis could sing the phonebook and it would still sound sexy and powerful. She carries the whole album on her shoulders with an insane energy that hasn’t aged one bit. 9/10
In the discussion for best live album of its era AND best collection of guitar solos on a record. Yeah the audio’s kinda shit, who fucking cares. shreds top to bottom with some of the most ripping electric guitar you’ll ever hear. Summertime is one of my top tracks ever. Janis obv incredible. Listened to: walking through BBG. Favorite tracks: Summertime, Piece of My Heart, Ball and Chain
Overall - 8/10 Nice intro to psychedelic and blues Skipped a few in between Also Janis Joplin!
9/10
Oldies but great stuff🎤🎤🎼🎼🎼
Brilliant album.
Incredible album
Producing this to sound like it was recorded live was a brilliant choice, and made me look it up to confirm it. Quite enjoyable. The band feels both tight and loose.
5/9
LOVED this
!!!
One of the all time best albums. I think I still have the LP. I was 16 when it came out. Album perfectly curated up through 'Ball and Chain' which is one of the top songs in rock history as far as I am concerned. The gentle and melodious, but ominous bass accompanying Janice's pained voice/story interspersed with hard diving psychedelic rock is unmatched. The album losses its direction after Ball and Chain, but it is nice to have those songs for posterity as well.
Even though she died at 27, Janis Joplin sings and sounds like my grandma. 9/10
Janis Joplin is incredible. Would give 4.5 stars but I can’t, so it gets 5
Janis Joplin feeds my souls every time she wails in the microphone. 10/10
Incredible. I love it through and through. The guitar has that fuzzy garage rock sound that gets me every time. I also am a sucker for a unique voice, and Janis has one of the most interesting voices out there. If I come across this record it'll be an easy buy
I had always heard of Janis Joplin but never had heard much of her work. This is a classic type of rock album.
I loved it! I learned that this is Janis Joplins band.
10/10 I’ve heard a few of these songs before, but they’re so timeless I could listen to them hundreds more times :D
VERY NICE
Classic
And Janis Joplin
Would be 5* for the vocals alone, but I like the music too. I'd say this is more blues rock than psychedelic with some great guitar playing, and the rhythm section brings a nice groove. Ball & Chain was an epic closer. This was a great discovery for me
Very good
- One of the great live albums from the 1960's -
this bangs
The album cover already raises expectations and Janis Joplin completely lives up to them. Let's go!
Very fun album! The vocals on Janis Joplin are absolutely incredible. The soulfulness that radiates from this album makes it one that I want to continue listening to over and over.
Classic Blues Rock / Acid Rock featuring the truly amazing voice of Janis Joplin. Although not a live album, (apart from "Ball and Chain"), the album captures all of the energy of a live concert. The best tracks on the album are the three cover songs: "Summertime", "Piece of My Heart", and "Ball and Chain", but the rest of the album is almost as good.
Love the band name. Love the cover. Love the energy here. This is my jam, onichan
fantastic listen
excellent album. the type of album where 5 seconds into every song you can tell its quality. Joplin with legendary vocals.
Absolute banger
Que capa incrível. Só ela já vale o disco todo!
Super cool! I don't really mind if Janis could sing or was just screaming. Her performance was full of passion, and there's a bunch of all-time classics here. One of the key albums from that period.
Great album
Janice Joplin!
Have on vinyl
Loved it. So bluesy, great guitars, and Janis Joplin is remarkable. Highlights are "I Need a Man to Love", "Piece of My Heart" and "Turtle Blues."
Absolutely loved this album. Janis Joplin, I was unfamiliar with your game
Love me some Janis!
Flows from ripping guitar solos and intense vocals to slow build ups and back again. Passionate and energetic, peak late 60s rock and roll.
hell yeah
It had such a captivating energy from the beginning, that I got mad when it got interrupted by a phone call and started again from the top, so that I can live through it from start to finish. This is an album that I’ll listen to from start to finish many times with no skips.
Combination of the Two is great. This is psychedelic rock I can get behind. Feels like it could have been a Wilson Pickett song. I Need a Man to Love lets Janis Joplin's voice shine. There are better versions of Summertime, it's not terrible, but i don't love it. Piece of My Heart is the hit from the album. Albums used to be a thing so it makes sense that there weren't a bunch of singles off this album, but I think there are better songs on the album. Blues/psychedelic rock is the best psychedelic rock. I guess if I have a complaint it's the phony crowd noise. This is the yacht rock challenge, is music in its purest form live in front of a crowd or in a studio? A glass breaking is too much. I do really like Turtle Blues though. Oh, Sweet Mary is more straight psychedelic music, it could be a Jefferson Airplane or Doors song. All of these San Francisco bands have a similar sound. 5 blues songs and two psychedelic songs, that's a more palatable way to take some acid rock. Ball and Chain is maybe a mix too. Janis just makes everything feel like a blues song, gone too soon. There's a definite Screamin' Jay Hawkins vibe to this.
Late 60s rock at it's very best, the playing is great, I love the garage rock feel to the production, but the shining star is Joplin's vocals, you'll go along way on this list to find better.
This doesn’t sound like an old album, it hits with a raw, live-wire energy that still feels fresh. The guitars are a highlight, buzzing with bluesy grit and psychedelic flair. Janis Joplin shines throughout, her voice full of soul, fire, and heartbreak. She brings serious weight to the songs, especially on standouts like “Piece of My Heart.” I’ll definitely come back to this album.
Janis Joblin at her best
Great
Holy shit this rules
Amazing
Fantastic lp
always
already had this album saved
Janis Joplin is dope
Honestly shocked at how good this is, though I’ll admit that Janis Joplin sounds like Marge Simpson 2/3 of the time
Love it, love it, love it I'm so biased it almost hurts
I had no idea that Janis Joplin had a band before going out solo! This is that band...and they are fantastic!!! It's like psychedelic/blues rock...with Janis' raspy howl. Fucking awesome!! I knew the song Piece of My Heart, but always assumed it was just a piece of Janis' solo work, never knew it was a band. Pleasant surprise today!! Phenomenal!! Favorite songs: Piece of My Heart, I Need a Man to Love, Turtle Blues, Magic of Love, Ball and Chain, Roadblock Least favorite songs: "Oh, Sweet Mary" 5/5
Excellent blues rock record. Janis was one of a kind and gone too soon, regardless of whether you like her voice or not; she was unique. For me she could belt it out like no other.
Awesome
I never Janis was in a band.
I have and will always love Janis
Fantastic
Classic Rock & Roll blues voice of Janis Joplin. A must have album in your collection.
dios janis joplin, tenía ANGEL esa dama
My brother used to date a girl who thought she was Janis Joplin reincarnated. She was born the same day Janis died. I didn’t like her but did always like this album. Rocking good time.
Loved this album. So good, I listened to it twice. That Crumb cover art really lets you know you’re about to get freaky with some underground 60’s shit. Not a bad song on the album which is part acid rock, part psychedelic, a splash of blues, and all sorts of awesome. Janis Joplin was a bad ass. This one deserves all 5 ⭐️
Cheap Thrills is a raw, electrifying snapshot of the ‘60s counterculture—blending blues, soul, and psychedelic rock into an unforgettable ride. With Janis Joplin delivering vocals that could tear your heart out and the band pushing boundaries like they’re on fire, it’s no wonder this album is considered a cornerstone of rock history. Between the explosive “Piece of My Heart” and the dreamy, reimagined Summertime, Cheap Thrills not only defines an era but proves why Joplin remains one of the most compelling voices in music. A must-listen, even if Sam Andrew’s vocals aren’t quite shining next to hers—but hey, you can’t compare a lightbulb to the sun.
How I got through life without listening to Jani Joplin I have no idea, but both albums are sensational and littered with incredible music and vocals and lyrics. The cover of Summertime is sensational
Boner of the month club
However low you might get, Janis always lets you know she’s right down there with you, like some sweet, drug-addled angel of mercy. I’m not sure any person ever used their voice to such great effect. She captures everything I love about blues in a way that’s all her own. The completely reimagined cover of “ball and chain” is my favorite vocal performance of all time. The great thing about this particular album is that the band does an admirable job of trying to keep up. Only thing I can fault it for is the odd choice to add fake audience noise. Album cover could use an update as well.
1968. Blues rock. acid rock. psychedelic rock. Janis Joplin. 8.5/10 Combination of the Two / I Need a Man to Love / Summertime / Piece Of My Heart / Turtle Blues / Oh, Sweet Mary / Ball and Chain
13/01/25 The raspy rock n roll voice works perfectly for this.
Iconic
Proper rock. Really good.
Perro discazo.
Was expecting generic blues rock with Janis Joplin making an appearance for "Another Piece Of My Heart". A lot of the blues albums on here are covers of black blues artists who's versions are often better but not mentioned. I was quite wrong about this album though. Sure there are some covers but the covers are really good. Janis vocals really is the star of the show and leaves her own mark on many classics. "Summertime" is a cool cover, so is "Ball and Chain". "Piece of my heart" is the song I recognize from this album and it is good but I never thought it was amazing. Put in the context of this album i think elevates it quite a lot. Honestly I've listened to this album on repeat, its the perfect length of around 40 minutes and I enjoy the whole thing. There is not 1 single amazing song but I still think it deserves a 5 star.
Janis Joplin is a legend, hands down. And on her last album as the lead singer of the band Big Brother & The Holding Company, she gave a masterclass. Her voice is capable of cross our souls and making us feel whatever she wants. "Piece Of My Heart" is a classic, and just like its singer, it has proven to be timeless over the years.
5 stars! One of my favorite albums. Absolutely stellar
Never knew Janis Joplin was in a band. Never heard of this band. But it was amazing!
Great album. A lot of classics I recognize from movies.
Just amazing.
Day 68 - Nov 22nd, 2024 In Janis Joplin we trust. 5/5
Buen finde.
Ah so this is what the fuss was about! :)
So freaking good. Everything Janis touched turned to gold. Great covers and originals. “Piece of My Heart” is an amazing song; one of the best ever. “Combination of the Two,” “Summertime,” and “Ball and Chain” were my other favorites, but there wasn’t one song here I disliked. I listened to this on repeat a few times and it never got old.
Janis had one of those voices that was impossible to replicate. It gives all this music a raw quality and an edge that makes it that much more enduring. This album deserves to be blasted at as high a volume as possible.
Janis Joplin en directo. Espectacular.
Raw and rough...just amazing!
Janis Joplin is impressive
What a great album. Can’t believe I haven’t listened to it before.
Janis was something else
Big fan of the Jan
I LOVED THIS. Ok I’ve got to be honest I’ve never listened to BB&THC, let alone Janis Joplin before. Sure, I’ve heard of JJ, but I know her being referenced in the same sentence as Woodstock or the infamous 27 Club. I’ve never been particularly pulled to seek her out and listen. Anyways, I popped this on in the car, commuting to work and from the first listen I was truly blown away. It’s fun & funky and I couldn’t get enough. (….I was kinda getting Marge Simpson vibes with Janis’ voice from time to time. ) I’m grabbing the album on vinyl as soon as I can and putting into my rotation.
Everything about this album works on some level- the unique cover art, raw vocals, epic guitar riffs- is it possible for the '60s to get much cooler?
I am very familiar with this album. Janis ' voice is like no other, raw and emotional. Her version of Summertime is one of my favorites. Its tragic to listen knowing she would be gone at 27 a couple of years after Cheap Thrills.
This is a raw an powerful rock and roll album. It is a peak for 60's blues driven music. The classic hard driving fuzzy 60's guitar work is exemplary. Joplins voice and style fits perfect for the band and the moment. SHe sings with such power and emotion. Now, knowing her traumatic history, how troubled she was, and that she would be dead within 2 years makes it feel like you are listening to someone tragically in throws of killing herself. Summertime is famously one of my favorite numbers and I love the juxtaposition of her voice singing what was meant to be a jazzy operatic song. 4.6
Somehow I’ve never listened to this whole album and so thankful I did. What a snapshot of an era and an incredible talent.
Loved it
Simply one of the best psychedelic rock records ever recorded, and a prime example of why live albums are often better than studio recordings.
A very cool album. An interesting mix of genres and styles, and Janis Joplin absolutely killing it on vocals. Loved it.
Summer of love psychedelic feel good rock with Janis Joplin's voice that pop music has been chasing ever since. Ahead of it's time and massively influential. Kick back and enjoy some dripping guitar solos with chilled out bass.
This album is heavy and rules.
janis joplin has SUCH a voice, her rasp can literally shake up whatever room she's in i feel. this alone makes me rank it pretty high. this album is a loud, trippy and almost choral sounding ride. while some people may find it a little bonkers, it's this pivotal turn in rock music that was refreshing especially for its time.
Janis rocks!!!
Way back in my review of The Who's LIVE AT LEEDS, I made a big deal vouching for the inclusion of live albums on this list. In short, if you haven't read it: there are just some bands where the studio setting didn't do their sound justice. Sure, they could sound **good** in the studio, but what they could do on stage is another level entirely. The Holding Company—as far as I'm hearing from this video I'm watching as I type this—was one of those bands. After their smash hit show at the Monterey Pop Festival and their debut studio album, the people were **clamoring** to hear the band's live sound captured on record. For some people, it was a hotter, more anticipated release than The Beatles' White Album. And come August 12th... Well, they sort of got it? Kind of, technically? Maybe not, depending on how you look at it? Most people these days probably know this, but in case you, the reader, don't, lemme jus' rip this off: this is a studio album. And it's not even a funky hybrid case like Frank Zappa's SHEIK YERBOUTI, where he overdubbed the shit out of live tracks. Despite what the cover claims, only one song on this album was recorded live, and it wasn't even where the cover says it was supposed to have been. This album is "live" in the same way "Bennie And The Jets" is, or Richard Cheese playing a royal wedding or Mos Eisley Spaceport. But putting that aside—would you know if I didn't tell you? They still kill it. They still rock to shit. Sure, even the **crowd noises** were recorded in the studio, but it's all put together so well, and the music is so good, I can hardly care. It's like the accusations lobbied against KISS's ALVIE! or Thin Lizzy's LIVE AND DANGEROUS being a studio creation. Sure, they lied about what kind of album this was, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get over it, y'know? Generally, I'd still enter it into the same pantheon as NO SLEEP 'TIL HAMMERSMITH and MADE IN JAPAN. And with it being at a nice, tight 37 minutes, too, there's no reason why you shouldn't give it a spin and try it out. It ain't a ball and chain; y'ain't got nuthin' to lose.
Wasn't hitting for me in the first couple tracks, but once Piece of My Heart came on, that sentiment changed into one of "Holy fuck, this is some good ass blues rock." Janis' vocals are one of a kind, and the instrumentation is superb, 'specially on the more bluesy tracks. 4.5 bumped up to 5, despite those slower tracks at the start.
I’m at a 10. I’ve never heard Janis Joplin’s voice until today – her name is pretty damn well known, but finally listening to her… god, what a voice. Extremely unique for its era – Ella Fitzgerald she sure as shit is not. One of the grittiest, harshest, and yet most empowering voices I think I’ve ever heard, and the range of her voice is on full display throughout this album. Really, the only thing I could complain about is that the band behind her is so fucking good that it’s incredibly easy to zone out and be mesmerized by their guitars and percussion. Combine that with Janis’s voice and you have a deadly weapon of “being so into it you literally forget what the best parts are,” and that’s where I’m at – I would normally wax poetic about individual pieces of an album, but this all blended together to make 37 of the most entertaining minutes I’ve heard yet. The one thing I can wax poetic about though is the absolutely stunning “Piece of My Heart” – just a bombastic track. Janis is on fire, the band’s on fire, the whole thing is a masterpiece on wax, and a truly flawless song. It’s worthy of a 5 by itself, but this whole album feels like it deserves far higher; just a masterclass to me. Absolutely fantastic stuff.
YES!! Oh Janis, why did you have to leave us so soon?
Janis Joplin kills it in the vocals, strong blues roots, great guitar
Rip Janis💛 sempre una leggenda
Janis Joplin is so amazing. I adore her cover of Summertime, Piece Of My Heart is a classic and I Need A Man To Love Me is also just extremely good. Then you even have the wonderful progrock of Ball And Chain. Amazing album.
Zonder na te denken een 5. Janis Joplin is de meest underrated Club 27 artiest. Wat een stem. Wat een vrouw. Wat een muziek.
Are we able to vote higher than five stars? Such a brilliant album. The more you listen to it the more you want to listen to it. Another great example of music written and recorded when it was artists pushing other artists to be their best. This album holds a special place in my library.
The best album so far, i regret i gave 5 stars to other albums before this
Cheap Thrills is an awful name because it implies this album isn't absolutely awesome. It also gets bonus points for releasing in the 60s and not being slop. There are some genuinely great guitar tones here, and some really recognizable riffs. A lot of influence can be traced back to this one and there really is a little bit of everything here. There's a bit of Blues, a bit of Metal, a bit of Rock and Roll, and they kinda do all of it well. Favorites are Summertime, Ball And Chain, Piece of My Heart, and Flower In The Sun
I absolutely loved this one. Really neat pseudo-live style that works for the music. Great vocals and ripping guitar that sometimes sounds like a precursor to metal. Also doesn’t outstay it’s welcome at a brisk 37 minutes.
Looooooooove these tunes
++: I Need a Man to Love, Summertime, Turtle Blues, Ball and Chain +: Combination of the Two, Piece of My Heart, Oh, Sweet Mary 9,0/10
I think this album showed what Janis Joplin. could’ve really been. I know most people like Pearl better. but I think this one showcased her power and energy more. What a shame.
Janis Joplin went the fuck off here. Amazing album.
This is everything I wanted it to be. The distorted guitar, the trance-like rhythm section, Janis' wailing vocals. Love it.
A very fine specimen of psychedelic proto-stoner rock, this is a splendid soundtrack for my secret and occasional desire to have lived in that space and time. Dropping some acid, floating to the Fillmore, listening to Ginsberg read some poetry and then this. Phoahh! The Kozmic Kaleidoscope, man! Favourite track: "Oh, Sweet Mary" indeed. I rate this 4.20 radiant tendrils of dazzling blooms. ✌
❤️JANIS
This is a fantastic album. Janis Joplin is such a rockstar. Her voice carries every song, but it’s set against impressively heavy music and really blended seamlessly with it. I listened twice and will listen again in the future.
New to me. Great album with some nice guitar tunes and an amazing female singer. Saved 3 songs as favorite.
Janis joplin
Listened to almost all of it, very cool
This feels like the ultimate 60s rock record to me. Blew me away.
Fantastic, legendary album. I feel like the combo of Joplin’s voice and those guitars rewire my brain every time I hear them
Remembered that one
My favourite kind of Janis. This was a good listen,
In love with the vibes and the mix between blues and rock. Makes you wanna go on a road trip
That album is awesome!
Cheap Thrills is the second studio album by San Fransisco-based band Big Brother and The Holding Company. Their debut self-titled record was released the year prior (1967) on the somewhat underground jazz label ironically named Mainstream Records. It was largely forgettable to the masses although it does have some solid blues psych tracks. Big Brother truly hit the jackpot with their performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. They were only supposed to play one day at the festival but upon hearing that their performance would not be recorded, Janis Joplin demanded to play a second set the following day that would be included in the film. In attendance were many powerful record executives looking to cash in on the new San Fransisco sound. One of those record executives being Clive Davis, of Columbia Records. He, like much of the crowd, was blown away by the commanding presence of Joplin and subsequently signed the band. Cheap Thrills was their first record for Columbia, and was the last Big Brother record to include lead singer Janis Joplin. Now, onto the album. It was originally planned to be a live album, but the live cuts were not up to par with the executives' expectations so most of the album was re-recorded in the studio. The only live performance to remain on the final cut was Ball and Chain. I think moving to the studio was not the best move. Big Brother was known for their live act. The backing band wasn't the best, so I think they benefited from the more gritty live sound. However, the presence of Janis Joplin is so attention-demanding that it just makes the album. Her voice is so powerful on these performances and you can feel the pain and heartbreak from her soul. Her voice surely isn't for everyone, but it's certainly for me. That combined with the dirty fuzz guitar is just a match made in psychedelic blues heaven. This album is truly a relic of the psychedelic era of the late 60s and is sure to transport you to Haight-Ashbury in 1968 or maybe even to an evening at the Fillmore West. Sleep in the stars, Janis.
Great
Amazing album. Obviously, the VOX are great and the overall sound is amazing but just the live feel is so unique all the way down to the last track and you can hear the house emcee telling the exiting crowd about the bands that are playing at the venue in the coming days (which alone is an incredible lineup)
Somewhere, somehow, Janis is still singing. And if that voice doesn't get you on this album, the guitar and percussion will pull you through.
I love the blues guitar. No idea that JJ had a backup band before her solar career
Marge Simpson knocks it out the park
This album was fantastic. I of course knew Janis was legendary, but I only knew a couple of her songs — one of them being Piece of My Heart, which is on here. Hearing a whole album of her singing, and a lot of it live, was an experience. The whole band is great — there are some crazy guitar solos on this album, amazing drumming, and some super funky bass lines. There's a fun mix of psychedelic rock, blues, soul, and the closing live track, (at least on the version of the album I listened to) Magic Love is practically a punk song. I personally prefer the psychedelic songs from the first half, but the whole thing is great. Janis was an incredible performer. You can tell how committed she is to every single note she sings. And though she's famous for her soulful wailing, there are also some more restrained moments where you can really hear what a beautiful, rich timbre her voice had. At her wilder moments she kind of sounds like the love child of Robert Plant and Marge Simpson, but I promise I mean that in a good way haha. This was a very enjoyable listen, and I might even try to pick it up on vinyl. 5/5
Es realmente una joya este disco. Aguante Janis Joplin loco.
Fun!
This is an album my dad always raved about but somehow id never listened to it before now. Reminds me a bit of Savoy Brown. I liked this better than the solo Janis Joplin stuff I've heard. Solid album.
Every time I hear this record, I'm blown away again.
Love me same Joplin and only wish there were more! What a unique individual with a timeless voice. The whole album is a mix of rock 'n' roll and blues at its peak. The fuzz makes me insanely happy. Just a solid record front to back. Standout Tracks: Summertime, Piece of My Heart, Ball and Chain
Yeah!!
ok YES janice is great. marge+kurt+some1 else lmao. love her voice. add some of these songs to ur spotify
I ordered this vinyl within the first three songs... didn't even see Piece of My Heart up next. Great album!
Had no idea.
janis joplin the woman that you were
One of my favorite albums from this list so far. Surprising and had never heard of them.
Rock at its finest. Classic.
Grande!!!
Perfectly mixed and every song is amazing. Love how this album ebbs and flows
Janis joplin hits all the right spots to make you writhe in you chair. Her voice is unmatched, only by maybe robert plant
Cool asf
I am an idiot. I always thought Janis Joplin was like some growly jazz singer. And BB&THC was some jazz band. This was the phenomenal blues rock album I didn't know I needed. I am an idiot. I know nothing. But I'm happy to have been very well surprised. I'm now going to have to go and listen to a lot more of this.
We were deprived of more Janis. Albeit she's blow out her vocal chords by the late 70's at this rate. Lovely live album, lightning in a bottle released before woodstock so you can imagine how epic that show was. 4 stars on principle, better albums came out in 1968 like Beggar's Banquet and Truth.
Speaking as someone who saw "Love Janis" when Big Brother & The Holding Company was the "orchestra" this is an easy 5 stars for me. Loved it.
Brilliant - particularly love Summertime (and Eminem’s use of the song in Rock Bottom).
Loved it
own
Janis Joplin singt Summertime
Jako dobar album uz jedan mega hit. 9/10
Anything with Janis is a 5 star for me!
I was fully prepared to hate this. But it’s fantastic. Janis at her finest. Her range, control and emotion are pitch perfect in every track. How she made gravelly screaming sound good, is a work of magic. Even the music is just right. Not overly self-indulgent. Genuinely good rhythm and blues, played very well. Really balanced sound. This should be annoying. But it’s really great. It’s probably the best example of the genre. The fact that it’s recorded live, without any of the modern production ‘fixes’, proves how tight this band really was. Again, I should totally hate everything about this, but there is not one flaw to be found.
A few songs I knew, a bunch I didn't but am glad I do now. Not quite sure why they made it sound like a live album (even the ones that aren't) but it kind of works. Best asset is Janis, and her voice, but the whole thing is solid and flawless.
It's a piece of art. Joplin's voice is protagonist in all the album and guitars solos are very characteristic of psychedelic rock. It has a lot of distorsion in the voice and guitars and a lo-fi quality probability on purpose. All the arrangements has a different characteristic sound because it goes telling an history about love and sex. The distorted guitars are protagonist in both sides of stereo spectrum, however, there's always a lead guitar when the voice doesn't appear
I've never been into Janis. This band is really nice. 2nd track kinda reminds me of "born under a bad sign". 3rd track... I'm super impressed with this band... but Janis is kinda ruining it for me. Oh Sweet Mary freaking amazing! Okay. This is getting a 5 despite my dislike of Janis's vocals half the time.
Why can't I give 6 stars ;-)
Great!
Fantastic sound! LOVE hearing Janice!
Good stuff Janis sure has some powerful vocals on this one. Classic
Loved it!
