Reviews (page 8 of 13)

Crazy that this album is 22 years old. Some great tracks on here.

Outkast, I am a fan. I like the groove..I like the funk...I like the style. That said, I do sometimes find the album listen a bit challenging...tends to feel stuffed to the gills just to stuff it. With just a bit of trim, I think I would enjoy it even more!

Mostly enjoyable, although I don’t know that I appreciate the interludes and there were a few duds on there. I’m wondering if I want any skits on my music albums… With these long runtimes I wouldn’t mind starting there to trim the length a bit. I’d probably enjoy an edited version of this… Nonetheless, there are a lot of real moments of brilliance on this album! It is packed with a variety of styles that keeps the interest level up. I really enjoyed hearing surprising instruments and styles pop up throughout. Easy to see why this is a rap classic.

Quite the classic eh Nolan? Nolan: Yuh

Goat album. So many hits

Classic

from "Toilet Tisha" to "I'll Call B4 I Cum" this album is great

So fresh and so clean!

Yeah I really like this album the beginning with three great songs in a row (if you exclude the between song songs, if you will); Gasoline Dreams, So Fesh So Clean and Ms. Jackson get thi gs started with a bang and there's little let up afterwards. A fantastic hip hop album. 4.5 stars

7,4 Iconic hip-hop Some of the best 2000 songs

Massa, mas bastante conversa e efeitos entre as musicas

J’aime bien cet album. Beaucoup de bons trucs et d’humour. Ça manque souvent dans le hip-hop. J’ai tellement écouté la toune B.O.B. dans ma vie, c’est clairement une de mes préférée du genre.

Classic

full of classics. loved the breaks

Quick notes…there’s so much variety to this album, which serves to get a rap outsider into the genre. There are several unreal songs from the duo on this album, and even non-hits are a decent listen. On first listen, OutKast is different from the 90s rap that I knew of growing up in the best way possible. Listening to the album in full made me see that I might have missed out on this when it first came out.

Maybe a few too many tracks and could be cut down by boy they knew what they were doing.

Sprawling hip-hop classic

An extremely expansive album, with some really good songs. I'm not sure that the messages stand the test of time, but will rate it based on the timing from when it was created.

4.0 - I generally try to listen to albums in one sitting so I can understand them holistically. But with this album that approach felt like eating an elephant -it's a fucking HUGE record! OutKast come on full force in almost every song with hard beats and frenetically paced rhymes (see "Bombs Over Baghdad"). For a mild hip hop fan with limited exposure, I enjoyed it much more when I listened in smaller segments. There's no denying the bars that are spit with relentless fury. And there are so many great moments on here (e.g. how they include a few bars of the Wedding March at the end of "Ms. Jackson"). I even like most of the skits that help create a cohesive listening experience. My only real knock is with "Clappin' and Trappin'" - the beat is distractingly loud and busy.

God, this album's sick. The interludes drag a little, and I could personally do without every song from Toilet Tisha onward, but it's so solid otherwise. Such a deep and complex piece of work, I'm really glad I got to revisit it for this.

Classic

Classic!

Another difficult album to rate, and not because I don't like it. I think these guys are brilliant, and this and "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" are two OutKast albums I own on CD, but man, this is a lot to take in in one sitting. The songs are so dense, I need an hour or so to digest what I've heard after three or four tracks and then come back for more. It's hard to believe this album is 20 years old — I'm not a student of the genre (whatever genre that is... you try to classify them) — as this album would be pretty groundbreaking if it were released today. [Side note, this and Speakerboxxx/Love below won Grammies for "Best Rap Album," so that's how the "industry" defines them.] The effortless (and adventurous) mix of styles, the guitar solo and entirety of "B.O.B." is a great example, is a feature of OutKast that drew me in from the start: the band just doesn't sound or act like any other in the rap/hip hop space. Andre 3000 and Big Boi are like Prince's younger brothers, artists who won't let convention or precedent determine how to create music, and while I don't relate to every moment on the album, it is all really good. It's a long album, with a running time of 73 minutes (taking the CD medium to its limit), but there's nothing to remove to make it leaner, even the interstitial interludes work to give the album cohesion and flow. I guess that settles it, this is a 4, closing in on 5 territory. Glad I had the weekend to explore it.

I really appreciate this album. This solid rap with this funk and experimental hip-hop nuances. Reeally good. (7/10) FT: Ms. Jackson, So Fresh, So Clean

I’ve always loved Ms.Jackson. It’s the only track on this disc that I was familiar with. Happy to say I loved the rest of it. Outkast have a lot to say. They can be funny (Gangsta Shit). They can be political (B.O.B.). But it’s mainly the sounds I enjoyed. The musical soundscape is so interesting. And subsequently the album is rarely boring. Highlights for me are I’ll Call Before I Come, Bombs Over Baghdad (loved the guitar solo), Xplosion & Gangsta Shit.

What I like about classic hip-hop albums: they are fun and funky, and full of ideas. What I don't like: they can be sooooo long, and skits. I mean, I love 3 feet high and rising, but why did people take away that the skits were the best bit of the record? This is, to my mind, the best Outkast album. It is less schizophrenic than Speakerboxx/Love Below and comes across as an integrated whole. The sue of live musicians gives the album a harder rock/funk edge which channels the influence of P.Funk, Prince, Hendrix etc without ever being a mere copy. The higher tempos give this album a lot of energy. The singles are outstanding, and most of the rest of the album is on point, not too much filler (although, I would prefer a shorter album overall). Also, they have toned down the misogyny and violence that is often overwhelming in hip hop, which is sweet blessed relief. Overall, a classic.

mi piacciono gli album che sono organizzati come un'opera corale e la musica non è nemmeno malvagia. Non emerge nulla di particolare però per renderlo un capolavoro

4/5. Fantastic album which feels bloated by the amount of skits/interludes when listening to it intentionally, they probably pass easier when not focusing on the record. Album stars off quite slow despite having the major songs (So Fresh, So Clean and Ms.Jackson) early. Other tracks I love Humble Mumble. We Luv Deez Hoez and B.O.B.

Incredible

pretty good, I like OutKast 8/10

Loved this, had some incredible names on it. Too many skits

Hip-hop muy entretenido. Mezcla con funk, rock... Me ha gustado. Un 4.

stanky

Lyrical legends, these dudes.

Lots of garbage on this album. Most of the filler was unnecessary but the good songs were incredible. Really close to giving this 5 stars but the skits were all terrible enough to lose it a star.

Some good songs, I'm not a fan of hip hop, but I do like some Outkast!

An absolute classic full of bangers

I expected the back half to fall off in quality due to the number of tracks, but it was solid all the way through.

This album suffers in my eyes simply because it's been so overplayed throughout my life. It's not as good as Aquemini, but it's an absolute classic and one of the best albums of the 2000s.

Already have listened

A big depart from their previous records, "Stankonia" threw away the mellow and chillness of early Outkast and focused on the zeitgeist of the early 2000, with a chaotic sound, mixing 1970s funk and early hip hop references with a a solid alternative and progressive rap production. Thematically, you can trace a topics from start to finish in this album, with lyrics about the aspirations of the black people in the USA, materialism in black culture, the public perception on hip hop at the time and the life of black women in southern United States. Songs like "Ms. Jackson" and "B.O.B." are great classics of an eternally evolving hip hop sound on which Outkast have a very important role to this day.

Listened to on the RS500 - surprisingly good

This was a nostalgic listen for me, I was in 6th grade when this came out and although I never listened to it myself I found myself remembering parts of it here and there. I was not a huge fan, but I definitely see how influential Outkast was on hip hop.

Not the music I listen to often but I do like this duo and this album is very well produced.

It's pretty good. Not all tracks stand out but the ones that do (Like Gasoline, Ms. Jackson, Red Velvet) are really good.

Fresh. Futuristic. Aware. These guys crafted such a timeless rap classic as the new millenium arrived. In terms of tracks, the funkier/softer ones are among the best rap songs I have ever heard. Those beats are on a different level. The skits and the rock-ish tracks are skippable, imo. However, the album as a whole is a pretty solid 70+ minute epic. Apparently, the duo tried to be more melodic, explored new musical influences, and worked with new producers to capture the colors of their times. Geez, the 2000's feels like a mirage now. Overall, while it's not something that I would listen from start to finish, it's definitely a solid modern classic.

After listening to this album it is evident that it has a huge place in the evolution of hip-hop into the Pop mainstream. OutKast combine 70's funk and soul, with elements of rock music and hip-hop, to create a work that is ready to take on the world of Pop. The album also lyrically stands out from most at its time in that the lyrics are socially conscious. The album clearly requires repeated listens to really appreciate it's place in the evolution of hip-hop but even after a few listens it becomes clear that this album was/is something special. The one song that seems out of place here is "Snappin and Trappin", not a fan of this song, mainly lyrically. Favorite song: Ms. Jackson 4 out of 5

Other than the sample on Snappin' and Trappin', this album was an incredible listen. Depth to the lyrics, plenty of layers to the production, samples and guest spots. I definitely hear the 70's funk influence of Sly coming in through the production. Fav Tracks: Humble Mumble and B.O.B.

A typical Outkast album with typical Outkast pop hooks - slightly surprising to see this album is on the list (wasnt the previous one considered to be the classic one?) Anyway it is very strong album even though 73 minute is overkill and hard to take in in one go. Rated it as 4* and still do.

Very good album, with a couple of great songs that I've had on repeat when it came out. However, having listened to the album again, there are just a few too many songs I don't care much for. Just short of 5 stars for me.

So good. Full of classics!

Very little to hate about this work of art

I’m not a hip hop person, but not going to lie, this one has catchy tunes. Wish it’d be shorter, thou...

Some absolute belters on this album, but not quite a 5-star as there's also a lot of dud filler. Prefer Andre 3000's leads to Big Boi's, some of it does veer a bit too much towards the bragadocious. Miss Jackson, So Fresh, So Clean and Bombs over Baghdad stand out

Classic, holds up

Great, although the often frenetic pace and elaborate vocals delivered at the same left me trailing behind and not picking up a lot: this is one I need to spend more time with.

This was my introduction to OutKast. I listened to this a lot in college, but i must have made a cd without the skits/interludes. Those are awful. The rest of the album is great.

Great stuff. Already listened to this album before, plenty of times. Ms jackson is always and wil always be a sad song :(

Не совсем мое, но качает знатно. Пару треков утащила себе, натанцевалась, шо аж шея болит. Хорошо, короче, 3.5

All around 4.

Oh I am exciiiiited to see this one! Reminds me of middle school. Gasoline Dreams is very 90s hip hop. Each track is so different. I love this album. I will say I appreciate this a lot more now than I did 10 years ago at Coachella lol

So much character on this project. You seemingly can't find anything like this nowadays.

i heckin love outkast

Very good!

goed maar wat te lang... wel soms gedacht "oh dit is cool"

Aaaah! I'm so conflicted! It sounds so fresh and so clean, but it leaves you feeling dirty! At least on a few tracks. If you took out "Gasoline Dreams," "Snappin' & Trappin,'" and "Gangsta Sh*t," this would be a top-tier album. With them, "Stankonia" is going to fall a star short. "Stankonia" includes all the OutKast hallmarks - incredible lyricism, flows, and funk aplenty. They were so unique and groundbreaking, but I wish that their style had influenced more of the musical style of Southern rap music. The stuff that I have heard coming out of Atlanta and the South in the last decade have been much less inspired. "Stankonia" wasn't my favorite OutKast album, though. It is apparently their most acclaimed, but "ATLiens" and especially "Aquemini" were better for me. But neither of those made the list! I went back to start "Aquemini," but will have to spend more time digging back into the OutKast catalogue. "Speakerboxx/Love Below" is on the list, but I don't remember that one beyond the overhyped singles. It's too bad OutKast is best known for "B.O.B." and "Hey Yaaaaaa(how many a's?)," because those are not their best (for me).

I love Outkast. I love their sound. Do I wish they bent their considerable talents towards worthier lyrical topics than their many conquests? Yes. However, contemplating the aftermath of those conquests as in "Ms. Jackson" makes it clear to me they have something more to say than just rapping about "Gangsta Shit" (but they can do that too).

Okay, it's rap, isn't it? Some songs are obscene, and I have nothing else to say, kinda generic hip-hop music to my ear. Still better than generic blues rock.

I had almost forgotten about hip hop inclusion of joke/skit tracks

Although it is a bit long at 75 minutes, it is a fresh sounding mix of rap and funky-rock with elements of jazz, blues and soul thrown in for good measure.

I thought this album was beautiful, varied and very different to what I imagine OutKast to be, glad I listened

Wonderful stuff. I remember watching Ms. Jackson on a music channel just before school one day and thinking it was excellent. I haven't actually listened to it properly for a long long time so it's nice to know it is a very good song.

Buen disco de Hip-Hop, un poco largo para mi gusto

Nostalgic but holds up

Long but enjoyable good quality hip hop like me granny used to love.

classic bangers on here. not huge about a couple of the tracks but still a very influential album.

There is some of this album I love, some I can take or leave, but overall it's fun and enjoyable

This is so much more of an album than I expected, which admittedly was Ms. Jackson plus filler. Great bars, great production, and still holds up as pretty original and refreshing in comparison to a lot of other rap/hip hop, both then and now. The soul and funk influences go a long way. Drags a bit towards the end, but Stankonia is a great closer

Excellent album…if they cut a few songs it would have been 5 star

I'm sorry Ms. Jackson ooooo! Enjoyed B.O.B. - Bombs Over Baghdad. I remember years ago there was a The Clash mash-up; London Booted, Spanish Bombs Over Baghdad, https://youtu.be/ZgLTO_LqOQA

Didn't listen to whole thing, but Bombs Over Baghdad is amazing.

Good album. A bit too long

This came out in 2000? Damn I’m old. I wasn’t sure about this one when it started… aside from the throwback radio hits… but this album is pretty good.

Liked it. Reminded me of Emina and gravediggers

Hip-hop muy entretenido. Mezcla con funk, rock... Me ha gustado.

Outkast is a top 3 rap group of all time. This is like a 4.5 because of the interludes and what they did during their first three albums

sorry ms johnsonnn

Love OutKast but in the minority of not absolutely loving this album. It’s got joints for sure but a smaller chunk feels like filler. Still great

This was a very good surprise. A great album that sounds very different from "normal" American hip-hop.

Too longer and some filler, but some tremendous tunes here. Very difficult to gainsay the triple-punch of So Fresh, So Clear, Ms Jackson and B.O.B. Also some fantastic deeper cuts like Red Velvet and Humble Mumble.

This was alright. a good reflection on the well known tracks

So fresh, so clean: sick drums

Great stuff, classic

Great album. Funny interludes, couple bangers ("Ms. Jackson" & "B.O.B."), couple goofy tracks ("We Luv Deez Hoez").

I like how this doesn’t sound dated.

Liked it a lot. 21 years old, still very potent flows/lyrics , beats not my fave sometimes. Favourites: snappin and trapping, ?, so fresh

Very good, enjoyed it a lot more than most hip-hop.

One of the truly great hip hop albums, masterful beats, lyrics, and skits. One of my favorite southern rap albums

A classic Hiphop album that evokes memories of happy uni days

Fun, funky hip hop

A great album full of energy, let down only by the skits and a couple of duff tracks.

really good album, a little jaded as it was so overplayed when I was younger

This album is pretty lit lyke

Hotlanta. Took rap in a southern direction.

Hip hop de calle. No es lo mío, pero no ha estado mal.

Crazy talent and really great songs. Happy to have listened to the whole thing.

Solid album, particularly enjoyed the second half. Still prefer Surfer Rosa, but would be interested in giving this album additional listens.

good one, some great tunes and classics althoug the concept drags a little

I love Southern rap, and Outkast are the progenitors of the whole thing. Atlanta wouldn't exist in music the way it does today if it weren't for Andre and Big Boi. Stankonia is a universally acclaimed classic and one of those essential albums that everybody should listen to. And in spite of all that, I can't give it a 5. Don't get me wrong, there are phenomenal classic tracks ("Bombs Over Baghdad", "Ms. Jackson", and "So Fresh, So Clean" come to mind) on this album. But there are also some odd choices ("Toilet Tisha") and some groan-inducing skits that should have been left off. Stankonia is absolutely worth a listen, but you're well within your rights to just stick to the highlights.

Great, funky, weird album.

Innovative and Bad Ass. outstanding Tag Team. Did not get 5 stars because the album overall was songs that were Grand Slam hits (miss jackson, so fresh/so clean, Hey Ya) mixed with songs that were just 'meh'

Funky fresh, ya'll.

Solid Album. 3.8

Really good. Far from perfect, too long and too many shitty interludes. Probably closer to 3 than 5 overall.

Straight FIYAHHH 4.5

Some really good memories. Probably best listened to while high

Great music, good and fun beats.

pretty solid hip hop, started stronger than it finished, not a huge fan of the interludes

Lots of classics, "so fresh so clean", "gasoline dreams", "ms jackson". Nice to listen to the full album, will definitely keep this one in the rotation.

Great album but for all the hype that it typically gets I was a little underwhelmed on my latest listen.

Many oldskool influences and truly a groundbreaking phenomenon that both hit hard on the popular music of the time and for a few more years to come. Though my knowledge on the R&B and rap scene are small.

Classic album. Some great hip hop hits that were great to revisit

First time listening to this in full, and I understand why this is on the list. It sounded fresh and interesting, but I wasn't really into the interludes. Still, a solid record for sure, and I'd listen to it again!

Far better than I remember from my first listen; Certainly rewarded a closer listen. There's still a bit of patchiness, and the sheer number of skits has been commented on to death. But Gasoline Dreams is an absolute monster of a track which I missed the first time around, and the hits still hit. A big part of my perception of higher lows is the consistent-but-interesting production and way Big Boi and André 3000's voices slot into the mix.

3.75/5. I enjoyed this. I thought there were some funny lyrics throughout the album. I also thought most of the songs sounded good. I will have to listen again.

Some highlights (Gasoline) some lowlights (Ms Jackson, I'll Call B4 I Cum). And seriously, I'll Call B4... is BAD. Ms Jackson isn't my lane and I always felt it was pretty weak, but even it looks good compared to I'll Call B4... In a VERY roundabout way though, hearing this led me to DJ Screw and right now I'm vibing hard with him, so Stankonia loses one star for I'll Call B4 I Cum but it gets one back again for inadvertently leading me to DJ Screw so there ya go.

Really hot hip hop. I hear all the influences: Hendrix, Little Richard, Prince, George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic. These guys pushed hip hop into new and exciting territory. Great listen.

Three-leaning-four. Almost there!

Kinda classic but I don’t enjoy most of the songs other than Mrs jackson sorry. That being said I respect what this album did for the 2000’s

ms. jackson is a banger and the rest was alright

Cool concept, very unique beats and love how the story unfolds Catchy Top songs: So fresh so clean

Too long and that annoyed me along with the interlude pieces. 3 stars

The album is far too long and it'd be the easiest thing to chop out all the interludes. They weren't good when this came out and have only got worse with time. The singles here are all great and the rest of it is solid. But it's a good not great album. I'd question why they get two albums and if they've really had that much influence, but they're hardly the worst example on the list

Heard it before. 3rd rap album in a row? Funny coincidence. At least I got something good. Ms. Jackson and B.O.B. are massive bangers. And there are more interesting tracks on the album too. It's a much better listen than Speakerboxxx/The Love Below where the entire 2nd part was a massive letdown 3/5

Buen disco. mucho swagg, y algunos temones

dragutel, not my typa music dar am apreciat intro ul, am vibeuit pe so fresh, so clean, i’ll call b4 i cum si bob si ele solide, m am oprit acolo tho pt ca nu m au lovit neaparat. bun de garage gen

Some fun hooks at times and I loved and always have loved Ms Jackson, but no stand ours. Stanklove is what I feel for my waterbottlee

des pépites, des choses moins bien

Some all timers on here but the corniness is just too much sometimes

Love the classics on this one (so fresh, so clean & ms Jackson) those go double platinum in my house. The rest was a solid hip hop album, not always my cup of tea but well crafted nonetheless

I'll give this a three because it sounded interesting at least.

Surprised on how OK it was

Contains some iconic tracks we all know and love.

A millennium classic that isn’t just an average hip-hop record; OutKast in true form.

Good Outkast

Some classics like Ms. Jackson, which I really enjoyed. I feel like some of the songs weren’t for me though.

I don't like rap that much but I'll be generous and give it 3.

Um not sure with this one. Wouldn’t say it grabbed me. I did see a difference between the more funkier songs, which I am not a fan of and the rap rock of BOB which I really liked, even more than Ms Jackson whose RNB beat was a bit obvious.

This was a rather eclectic experience. Some aspects knocked it out of the park, but unfortunately, there were also a couple of stanky foul balls. On the plus side, I was familiar with (and love) the three singles. Each track felt different, and the beats were consistently compelling. I also appreciated the conscious elements (though, not so much the more tropey ones). On the negative side, the album is littered with skits, and I flatly hate skits. This compounded the other big negative of the album: its length. Even without the skits, it would still be over an hour long. I can't tell if the back half is weaker than the front, or if it was simply fatigue setting in. Either which way, some cutting would certainly have helped matters. With the proper editing, this might have been a 5. As it is, a 3 feels most appropriate. Skits are the devil.

I give this a 3 with a side of “on the right day it’s a 4.” If this album were 30 minutes shorter it would be 4 “on the right day it’s a 5.” So bloated and filled with fluff. The great songs on here are so freakin good though.

Always a… sign when the intro feature moaning sound effects. Gasoline dreams: a decent flow, but overall didn’t really like it. So fresh so clean steps it up slightly, I liked the mix of pop/rap and thought it was a massive improvement on the first track. Lyrics were questionable, but it was a fun enough listen. The keys following the tune of the chorus throughout the verses was a cool effect. Ms Jackson was pretty great. I know that’s the popular track on the album, but it is for a reason. Snappin & Trappin used the lyric Pussy Wrecker. Nuff said. Other than that I didn’t really think it was that bad though. I’ll call b4 I come: ugh. I think with this one you just have to not listen to the lyrics because it’s a bop otherwise. The woman vocalist was pretty good on this one. I actually really enjoyed B.O.B. It had such a good intensity to it! Humble Mumble, well, it was alright but I liked the name. Red velvet was pretty good! Gangsta shit… eh. Very repetitive. Toilet Tisha had a nice sound to it, I thought it was quite annoying but somewhat mesmerizing. Having Cee-Lo on Slum Beautiful was nice. As a last track, the title track was alright, but it was too long. It had some good moments, but I really felt that length. 2.5/5 ⭐️, it doesn’t quite deserve a 2, but I don’t want to give it anything higher. 166/1089

i liked this album and i liked the funky beats, i would need to listen to the lyrics more and look into the messages more to better rate

средненько, много снипетов определенно есть стиль необычная подача есть хиты всю культурную особенность этого альбома мне как белому человеку понять не дано, поэтому что есть то есть. качает местами есть хиты 3.4

Not an Outkast fan as such but I've heard both _ATLiens_ and _Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik_ and, from memory, they're both better than this which is a long and bloated affair with some great moments (_Gasoline Dreams_, _Ms Jackson_, _B.O.B_) but ultimately, at 73 mins, is too long like most hip-hop albums around this time and it suffers for it... meandering along, not sure of its direction, much like this single sentence review.

In my eyes, one hit doesn't automatically make this a good album. It's passable, though.

Lyrically maximalist (few rappers to this point had crammed as many syllables into their verses or, especially, their album titles) and significantly less aggressive in posture than much of the popular hip-hop of its day. It's also quite long. OutKast are a deservedly influential act from this period and broke out of the narrow lane that had been established for hip-hop crossing over to the mainstream. They were idiosyncratic and prolifically creative. 'B.O.B.' and 'Ms Jackson' are classics. There's also a lot of good in here. I did find myself becoming bored once or twice. Maybe I just didn't like 'I'll Call Before I Come' and, since I hate the skits on rap records, *eight* of them is pretty grating, especially on a day when I already had a headache. For sure, give it a go. It's a good record. Is it the #6 album of all time, as Paste Magazine once said? I don't think it's in my top fifty. But it's worth your time. 3/5 (which I'll admit is a little harsh)

Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Very Good - This album has a much harder edged funk than the preceding couple of albums which were spacey and soft where this is bouncing and high energy. I think the album lacks truly great tracks after the first few. B.O.B. focuses things again for the second half though. It's a very good album and I would like it even more but I can't help comparing it to OutKast's earlier work which I definitely prefer.

there’s some good stuff here but it feels kinda bloated and all the interludes lost my interest. don’t talk to me just play me music yk?? but i have respect for outkast and the formula that they rock with.

Некоторые номера немного заинтересовали.

This did not need to be 70 minutes. I fucked with a good amount of it, though, but some of the beats were a bit too goofy-sounding for my taste. Still a decently fun album all-around. Favorite Track: Ms. Jackson

Am I a big OutKast fan because I've heard some of their albums and know songs other than Hey Ya? Because I listened to this project and ATLiens for the first time this year, and I don't find them any more exciting than other lesser respected albums. I think the key is the quality of the rap and production, which is undeniable here, so a real hip-hop head will have a lot of material to enjoy. As far as enjoyment for music in general, I really don't see myself putting this on again. It's an easy listen, but it lacks the hook to force me to come back— in an era where singles are added to your entire collection. We all know what the standout tracks are, here. I suppose it could've aged better. The hard lyrical effort is so influential that it's been bested continuously. Thanks OutKast, for the grand scheme of hip-hop. I wanted to like this more than I appreciate it, or at least as much. 3.2/5

Very lively.

This is the first full rap/hip hop album I've ever listened to. The beats in each song were pretty static in that it was kept constant throughout the song, with only slight variations in some of the songs. This made me want to finish each song and get onto the next as across the album each song had a unique beat that I usually enjoyed. Reading the lyrics while listening to the songs definitely elevated my experience as the rapping portions had very interesting lyricism (storytelling and rhyming), however the themes of sex kept on repeating on nearly every song with just a couple of exception such as "Ms. Jackson" and "Toilet Tisha" which made the album feel very monothematical which undercut a bit from the more interesting stories told. Something else the lyrics did was talk about the album itself and Outkast as a group being present, standard practice for rap albums, which I didn't enjoy as they were really out of place. What I enjoyed most was the rapping since the instrumental parts didn't have many instruments and were just about the beat itself rather than using a variety of sounds so for example I enjoyed the song "Xplosions" as it was fully rap while a song like "BOB" was only good in the rapping sections. I didn't enjoy "Snappin' and Trappin'" as it felt like they were trying to be experimental with all the weird sounds but it didn't really add anything to the song. "Humble Mumble", "Xplosion", and "Ms. Jackson" were my favourite songs of the album. Overall would probably listen to a couple of these songs again but not the full album.

it was pretty good but only a few songs stood out

Exuberant, unpredictable, steady, flowing excitement.

3.5/5 stars if I could, has some of OutKast's best songs on here but the remainder of the "not so popular songs" were pretty bad

Better than expected

I don't know why I thought this would be better, but I thought it would be better. The last OutKast album felt unpredictable and super creative, this felt a bit more mundane. Didn't hate it but didn't love it either.

There were parts of this album that I enjoyed quite a bit. For instance, Andre 3000s rapping feels fresh and different and the feel of the album is pretty unique and experimental and is drawing from a pretty wide range of influences. That said, there was a lot I didn’t like. Most notably, the length of the album, the interludes, how repetitive some of the songs felt, and the general cliche hip hop subject matter in some of the songs.

Rap is not my vibe for listening to music, but I did like Ms Jackson and I’ll call B 4 I cum. I can appreciate the variety and beat of some of it, but overall I’m just not a big rap fan

Too long, skits forgettable, great singles and some good album tracks

Singles are amazing. The rest were just ok.

it’s been so long that I listened to hiphop. this was a really good way back

Apart from a few certified bangers this album as a whole is not something I would ever listen to. I think it's the only Outkast album I don't own.

Entretenido rap

Just for a funny and my first whole Outkast experience, but it is an ok album

Naturligtvis lite för långt men kan man bortse från det är det jämnt, svängigt och en hälsosam dos party. Det är ett bra hiphopslbum med gott om starka spår. Bäst gillar jag det loja svänget i "So fresh so clean".

eerste paar nummers 4/5, rest 2/5

So given that hip hop is not my thing this is never going to fair. But there’s powerful & clever lyrics here. It may not sound totally contemporary but it sure as shit doesn’t sound 26 years old. Kim & Cookie is brilliant / hilarious. And the Ms Jackson groove is irresistible.

I think they are parts of it I absolutely love, but it is a bit messy by design, and I am not often in the mood for that. I also think it probably deserves to be listened to multiple times to truly be understood, but I dont have the energy to sat throught this very long very explosive, record multiple times right now. Bombs over Bagdad is an absolute highlight, though.

I forgot half these songs, and they do have some proper bangers.

way too long

Favorite of all Time

Tired.

Some moments were nice oldschool hip-hop, but the more modern one were annoying to me. Could be easy 4 if the annoying stuff were removed to trim it to 40-minutes album

Ms. Jackson HIMNO

I really enjoyed the album. Was kindly belssed with it not being as much boombap as many 90s albums are. The hits are there such as Ms. Jackson and B.O.B.

Im was not impressed

This album was one of the soundtracks of my youth. I was never a big fan of albums with interludes, but I get their point in the larger theme of the album. This one is more cohesive than most.

fav songs: so fresh, so clean ms. jackson b.o.b. (bombs over Baghdad) xplosion energetic, inventive, bloated 60/100

ms jackson is irresistible

no entendí nada.

The songs were good, but there were too many interludes and skits. Why did so many 90s and 2000s hip hop albums include them?

Didn’t love every song but it was def a vibe

I like a lot the songs on this album and enjoyed interludes.

Starts off very strong with Gasoline Dreams. Ms. Jackson is also a classic one. Other than that I got tired of it by track 15 because I'm not a huge hip-hop fan. But this was pretty good. I was initially too generous on my votes and I'm calibrating my bar now so this gets 3.

It's ok, but asside from a couple of really iconic songs it gets repetitive after a while. Sometimes it feels a bit performative.

The hits were hitting. The rest not so much. This was too long, and as with similar records I didn’t care for the skits and could have done without them. 3/5

3.5. Mostly fun

Rap pesado, para entrenar súper. Muy buenos temas pero larguísimo y canciones muy x

Lots of meh tracks but some fiya ones - found a new fav song in that bombs over Baghdad tune

Wasn't in the mood for this kinda music atm

Started super strong with the hits but most everything after was very hit or miss and nowhere near what this group is capable of, and went on really long

00’s Hip Hop ⭐️Gangsta Sh*t

It just boggles my mind that Andre3000 didn’t become the next big thing. I’m guessing it was his own doing. I’m not looking it up. I’ll always just wonder until I see something on YouTube. Shhhh let’s listen to the album. And it’s just as I have always thought. OutKast are only as good as their singles. They are a group you want to love but they just fall short . Choice cut: Ms.Jackson

Danced my ass off to this in high school. So Fresh, So Clean Ms. Jackson B.O.B. - Bombs Over Baghdad

Way too long, does not do enough in all that time. I think that Southernplayalisticadillacmusic or ATLiens should've been the pick for the list, too.

Didn't like this as much as I expected, ranges from close to unlistenable (or at least aged very badly) and the best music ever written (Bombs Over Baghdad). Let's go in the middle

Intro is fucking insane man Some fillers here and there but it doesnt bother me for now Also it's such a good hiphop album okay like despite some questionable lyrics "snappin and trappin" im talking about you rn but its not the only one

Stankonia makes a stronger case for itself than Speakerboxxx/The Love Below — the single album format keeps Big Boi and André 3000 operating as a unit rather than pulling in separate directions, and the production has a kinetic, genre-blending energy that feels genuinely unified rather than divided. The talent is never in question. The opening argument is almost overwhelming. "B.O.B." arrives like a freight train and remains one of the most propulsive tracks in hip-hop history — punk energy, gospel choir, and Atlanta funk colliding at a speed that shouldn't work and absolutely does. "Ms. Jackson" is a stone cold classic that earns every bit of its cultural staying power. Erykah Badu's presence elevates everything she touches, as it always does. The problem is consistency. The interludes derail momentum in exactly the same way they did on the double album — OutKast clearly love the format and this particular listener consistently doesn't, which is a stable and honest critical position rather than a snap judgment. The material between the peaks is a genuine mixed bag, and the highs are high enough that the valleys feel more pronounced by contrast. Two OutKast records, two honest threes. The ambition is real, the highlights are real, and the format choices keep pulling the rug out from under both. A record that contains some of the best moments in their catalog without quite being one of their best albums.

I have listened to a few of these songs before, especially Ms. Jackson. It is an interesting album because the songs range from 30-second interludes to over 3 minutes. Even though it isn't something I would normally listen to, I think the album is really good and unique. Definitely worth listening to.

I went into this album expecting to struggle with it, as I usually find it hard to stay engaged with hip hop. However, OutKast turned out to be more interesting than I expected. B.O.B. stood out to me with its unexpected guitar elements, which gave it a strong rock feel. Stankonia (Stanklove) left an impression with its bluesy atmosphere, showing a completely different side of the album. Overall, it’s a diverse and experimental record that goes beyond my usual image of hip hop.

Well...Hip-Hop/Rap is not my usual genre... I have learned to have an open mind and expand beyond my first impressions. So far this has been a fun journey in music and culture.

Album with great his, however a lot of agressive cuts for my taste

Aww fuck yeah. Perfect for a Friday. The beats slap, it's chonky hip hop goodness.

the songs were good, but half the album is talking

Me gustaron solo dos canciones, no soy de rap

Doo doo

Full Album Thoughts: Album Rating: 3.4 (B) Alright. Alright. Alright. I did not rate the interstitials. Gasoline Dreams B- All right. The delivery is a bit too much Yell for me. I really dont have an ear for rap or hip hop yet. So Fresh So Clean A+ See I am enjoying this more melodic style already, and the more "stream of consciousness" sounding verses. A bit more loose on the beat. Also I need a minute to recover from "Youre so anne frank lets hit the attic to hide out for about two weeks". Ms Jackson A Wild choice for the backing track, what I can only guess is just Playing It Backwards. Really trippy sounding. One thing I am noticing about myself is I dont really focus on lyrics on An Initial Listen Through, so very dense lyrical artistry is lost on me. Snappin & Trappin C Now like... this bweep bweep song just sounds like Alien Meme Music. Spaghetti Junction B+ Oh yeah this is smoother. I l do enjoy more laid back beats Ill Call Before I Come B+ Hehe, yeah see this is how you do a goofy sounding song. I actually enjoy this. BOB S This is absolutely wild. Love this. Such a wild varied song. Xplosion A Weird harpsicord beat with distorted drums and guitar squeals? And we are back to the Fart Synths. Okay. We Luv Deez Hoez A I also really enjoyed this one, but was too distracted to write much! Humble Mumble A And this one has a funky beat too! Sadly there is some kind of score multiplier I am noticing in my "somewhat objective rating" where if you have a string of good songs in a row, I kinda ride that vibe throughout! Having female vocals singing is also a nice break? Red Velvet B- Nope. Combo dropped. Gansta Shit B- It takes a hot minute to get started, and then we are back to the stutter step style of rap. Toilet Tisha A- I think this is a bit too long, but its a groove and a half. Slum Beautiful B+ Chill song, I actually dig the weird noodling, but again, a bit too long. Stankonia B- This is a hell of an outro. Not really much to say again. Sorry, this one doesnt do it for me

Better than biggie and stuff

Rap isn't a genre I have any form of affinity for. If anything I have a negative affinity to it. Until a few years ago, if asked what kind of music I dislike, rap would be unfairly my answer, a consequence of being bombarded by plenty of crap rap whilst first navigating the world of music and seeing it as a big mainstream genre I wanted nothing to do with. Gradually this has been worn down over the years by encountering better representations of the genre, and OutKast would be among the artists who softened my dislike. Hey Ya! was a song I grew up with, and whilst at the time I wouldn't have known to consider it rap, and perhaps still today wouldn't, it's a formative song for me. Stankonia isn't an album I looked into despite that; I still didn't like rap enough to sit down to a full album, and the one song I knew well from it, Ms. Jackson, was the least favourite of their songs I listened to with any regularity. I understand Stankonia was a significant release at the time, and I'm sure the social commentary hits harder if you were listening to it during the time of its release in the country it came out of, or were more ingrained into the scene, so for me I lost all that possible connotation. I found this album to be lengthy, lengthier than it should be, with a lot of the later songs feeling like padding and the abundant interludes that smatter the album being particularly unneeded. This album has some very strong songs. Ms. Jackson is probably it's main hit, it's the sole song I knew in advance, but there's some other real standout stuff. For me, Bombs Over Baghdad might be my single favourite song I've found through this process so far. It's only album 20, but as a metalhead I was coming here hoping in no small part to find metal and rock I had never listened to before, so for the first song I listen to on loop I first found here to be rap is staggering to me. For every great song here there's something more underwhelming. It's hardly a hit parade, and after B.O.B. nothing could stop that song thrumming through my head. Ironically it somewhat ruined the rest of the album for me. I'd rather listen to OutKast as single songs than a full album, even if I do now better appreciate their work. Listen to this album once, find the songs you like, and get out.

So Fresh, So Clean and Ms. Jackson are the standouts I grew up being familiar with, but the rest of the album was probably too experimental for my taste. An interesting listen and no doubt culturally significant, but one I won’t revisit outside of the singles.

Some of the songs are really filler fuel, which kinda ruins the album from being great. Ms. Jackson and Bombs over Baghdad are great songs though!

3.0 - Ok

It's better than Speakerboxxx which I scored 2. Interludes annoy me though (again) and it's still too damn long! Won't listen again.

This album transported me back to a simpler time. I still fucking hate interludes though.

Could have used some editing but the flow is good and B.O.B. is outstanding

Fun to listen to

i like wu tang and the other one more sounds abit general but cld be seinfield

Very cool thematic album

It's too long and a mixed bag for me. Can't be doing with all the skits. Miss Jackson a cut above the rest

Pretty, pretty, pretty good

its not my kind of music, but its a wide variated album with songs for everybody

Sorry miss Jackson but this was mid

No es mi onda pero me gustó

I liked so fresh, so clean and I am sorry ms jackson. other songs just didnt stand out

I have heard about Outkast heard their famous songs but have not heard a whole album written by them. I enjoyed the album its just that old hiphop is not me. The production is crazy, beats, lyrics. I see he hype around the album and Outkast but its not just my type of music. It was nice listeing to it. My personal ranking is a 7.5/10.

Bombs over Baghdad is a 5 star track … not sure about the rest of the album though 🤷‍♂️. Also love that Chappelle quotes it in his black Bush skit 😂.

I’ve kind of avoided OutKast because I got so sick of Hey Ya but this is decent.

Hip-hop rap with samples/loops. Concept album? Almost.. Some funk influence in I'll Call B4 I Cum. First full track (Gasoline Dreams) reminds me of Public Enemy. Also Dr Octagonacologist but that was actually fun. Apart from Ms Jackson there's almost nothing melodic here. And at 1hr 13mins it's pushing it. Ah BOB is what we're here for. Dense rhymes and political lyrics, and even a hook! On another level to what came before on the album. Best track - Spaghetti Junction, BOB 3 stars - I expected more based on the Outkast I'd already heard

There are a couple of hits, it's well written beat wise. I get why they are a important group of the 00s hip hop scene and has a cultural impact. But for me personally it is not the most interesting music and i wasn't that into hip hop in my early days. otherwise it would have been higher

I’d give the album a 5/10. Love OutKast but this album just didn’t do it for me. Of course there are a few classic songs on here but the project overall wasn’t for me. A little all over the place but true to who OutKast is, out of the box.

probably the hip-hop album i've enjoyed the most on here so far but there were just tooooooooo many of those interludes. whole album in general was just way too long.

I’m surprised I didn’t like this more. A couple absolute gems, but just not enough to sustain throughout for me.

Probably high 3 if not low 4. Great flow, great beats, great riffs! It went a bit long, and I didn't like the horny tracks, but the other songs were great.

I found a new song I hadn't known before (Gangsta Sh*t) which sounds very Memphis based.

Pretty interesting production, but the songwriting was not amazing

A few absolute classics, but the rest is just okay

this is a classic. some really fun stuff on here. i could really do without the interludes i just dont care for them. 7/10

Tracks like 'So Fresh, So Clean' and 'Snappin and Trappin' just don't hit the mark for me. They represent what I often dislike about rap. Repetitive backgrounds and limited musicality with a rap layered over the top. Less 'sauce' and more substance, please. The album has so much content that it's probably impossible not to find a style that misses for me. However, a redeeming quality of the group is the diverse flow among the members, which adds an interesting element. It keeps the sound from going stale, and some of the delivery is the closest to singing I’ve experienced within this style of hip hop. While it does feature the occasional synth loop, its not too intrusive. You get a genuine variety of beats, styles, and instruments. The way they blend those with melody is, from that perspective, pretty cool. Ultimately, it’s an album that has a lot to say and doesn't rely just on being offensive, so I'm pleased with that. Especially as someone who has been very avoidant of R&B and Hip Hop in the past as a general rule. Not bad!

This is a very good rap album. But it's still a rap album. There is a lot in here that sounds ahead of it's time but it also falls down in some of the usual ways. It's overly long, annoying interludes, and at times is repetitive. The best thing about this album, other than it's prescience, is that it remains upbeat and fun to listen to despite some fairly hard themes. I didn't end up with the same fatigue as I sometimes have after an hour of violence and dark themes. Honourary mention for "Mrs Jackson" which is a great track that was played a lot during my uni days.

I am for real

Bangers are banging, but everything else is more meh... The beginning is great, but after bangers, it's just fillers. My favs were Ms. Jackson, So Fresh So Clean, Toilet Tisha (my fav besides the hits everyone knows)

Another album that is plagued by its size. There's plenty of good stuff here, and I can't deny that when Big Boi and Andre 3000 are together they have the ability to strike gold. But there are just as many misses here as there are mega hits. They're definitely an impressive duo, but this is ultimately a skip-around album. Personally, I can only handle so much of Andre 3000's channeling his inner Prince. Highlights: Ms. Jackson B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad) We Luv Deez Hoez (feat. Backbone & Big Gipp) Lowlight: I'll Call B4 I Cum (feat. Gangsta Boo & Eco)

I've never listened to a whole Outkast album so this was enlightening. I can understand why they got more radio play than other hip hop bands but they still feel like a proper rap group. I didn't know how Southern rap was distinctive from other regions and this album gives me some sense of it--not that I could define it, but I think I can hear it. It's also interesting to hear Andre 3000's early years given all that he has gone on to do in the last 25 years.

Overall, pretty good album, some of the songs are mediocre, some are remarkable, some of their more popular songs are off Stankonia, and some I'd never heard but had me hooked nevertheless by it's beat primarily. I'd give this album a 7/10, cause as much as there are some serious bangers, some fall short for me.

3.5! Some absolute classics on here, and I found it really easy to listen to even with the length. Ultimately not enough stood out for four stars, but I do love this band.

there are a bunch of great songs on this album and many that I could do without. I'm also done with "interludes". drop about five songs and all the interludes and i would I give it another star

I've always struggled with OutKast - they're obviously insanely talented but it always comes across as cold. It's never hit me on a gut level, it's always academic appreciation. This album was no different. Is it because I'm not from Atlanta? Maybe. Talented? Yes. Worth being on this list? Yes. Will I go back to it? No. Best Tracks: Gasoline Dreams (with Khujo Goodie); Ms. Jackson; B.O.B. - Bombs Over Baghdad

Hmm...I liked this less than expected based off my past experience listening to Outkast. Too many interludes that added nothing to the album. The songs that were hits were the best ones.

Some good tracks on here and some that feel like they were just experimenting and said wtf, throw it on anyway.

Oohhh very fun, definitely knew a few songs but had never listened to t he album before. Don’t know if I’ll return to it, but glad I listened to it tho

Gasoline Dreams is a banger, literally. So Fresh, So Clean is so fun. Ms. Jackson is a classic. ? is so so good. This album unfortunately has way too many interludes, so scoring down based on that.

Some great bits but way too long. Enough with the interlude skits.

not bad

Couple of good songs

The question going into Stankonia was were any of the other tracks going to be up there with 'So Fresh, So Clean', Ms Jackson, and Bombs over Baghdad? Unfortunately the answer for me was no, which leaves this album a bit of a bloated mess at over 70 minutes.

Lots of upbeat, good quality songs, although a bit too frenetic for me.

Of its time. Favourite track: Ms. Jackson

Up & down, I liked Gasoline Dreams and Ms Jackson, didn't like Snappin' & Trippin' and We Luv Deez Ho*z. A lot of social commentary which I feel requires a second listen to fully parse, but at 1hr10ish for 24 different tracks I might not. Still engaging though

I love Outkast and have very fond memories of this classic album! I have to say, though, sacrilege as it may be, that like most hip-hop albums I've ever heard, it's too long and really dips in the second half. Lots of high highs in the first half. B.O.B is probably my favorite Outkast song!

I know the respect this album gets… not my jam

Helllll yeah

I'm always a little nonplussed with OutKast, he deserves a spot on the list but I can't say how high

My only past experience with Outkast is Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, and it's safe to say that was not a positive experience. Without the much stronger disc 2 of that album, it would have nothing going for it, and even with that disc it's far too long for comfort. Stankonia is a more reasonable length (though still too long for an LP). There are plenty of good full-length tracks here and only a few duds* (plus all the interludes, which are throwaways almost by default), so it's easy to shave this down to 40-50 minutes. I have no idea why this wasn't done. Outkast's monotone moaning is nothing to write home about. The opening track, Gasoline Dreams (let's ignore the one minute of sexual moaning that is Intro), is yet another bland attempt at giving the police the middle finger. Which, don't get me wrong, is an important message. But apparently it doesn't make for good-sounding music. The next song, So Fresh So Clean, is a big improvement, mostly for the stylish falsetto chorus and wah-wah synth. There's also a nice keyboard line in the verses that imitates the chorus melody – a subtle detail, and very cool. Ms. Jackson is also an instant classic, and it's obvious why. The chorus is groovy, soulful, unmistakeable. In contrast, the verses are nothing amazing, though using reversed SFX is a fun touch. Bombs Over Baghdad is another pretty good song (and we're less than halfway through the album). The mood is rushed, aggressive, a call to action. You might notice I'm disregarding the interludes. There's a good reason for that. For reasons unknown, they leapt into the musical norm in the early 90s, and (at least in hip-hop and R&B) have been unshakeable ever since. "I'll Call B4 I Cum"? Oh dear. (Unfortunately, that synth riff goes kinda hard.) [*The duds in question include "?", Snappin' & Trappin', Gasoline Dreams, and Red Velvet.] 3/5 Key tracks: So Fresh So Clean, Ms. Jackson, Xplosion

Not my thing, but good quality music

Very high highs, very low mids. The first half of the album had me thinking this would be my first 5 star, with classics like Ms Jackson and B.O.B, but the second half felt like a bit of a let down, lacking the energy and pickup of the first. The interludes (or interlewds as they were) felt very out of place and jarring against the rest of the album and didn't add much to the cohesiveness of the record.

This had some hits I didn’t expect. Fun and easy listening

Very different and unexpected

Vähän tuntuu taas menevän liian pitkäks tää levy ja kerkee kyllä tylsistymään svengien soidessa. Onhan siellä ihan kivoja biisejä joukossa, mutta suurin osa melkosta samaa mössöä

Ei ihan perusräppäilyä, vaan mukavan erilaisia stygejä. Ei tätä silti heti uudestaan kuunnella tarvitse. 3/5

it's alright

It was alright, definitely some good songs in here but it went on for soooo long. And too much moaning interludes for me.
