It’s very obvious to me when I peaked based on the current music I owned at the time.
I had low expectations, but it exceeded my expectations. Probably won't come back to it for a while, but definitely expanded my understanding of OutKast, beyond the one song that everyone knows.
OutKast is a band that I want to like. The album sounds like OutKast. "B.O.B." is the track that I've heard off this album before. I think I tried to listen to Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, but didn't enjoy that album either. OutKast are talented, but the music is not for me. I could not and would not want to sing along with most of the tracks. The multiple interludes on their own may have been enough to sink this album to 2 stars.
An absolute classic.
An Eagle’s nest. A red kite soaring in a blue sky. Music heard in the air. Is it safe to assume that the term Stank Love is referring to sex, the smell, specifically? I’m familiar with the similarly labeled, Stank Foot, defined as an offensive, unpleasant odor. However, the title track appears to be celebrating Stank Love, so I’m confused. Unless, perhaps, the lyricist enjoys a stanky bounce, and then… This whole LP found me scratching my head. Take this lyric from an early track (‘So Fresh, So Clean’) as but one example: ‘… you’re so Anne Frank, let’s hit the attic to hide out for ‘bout two weeks…’ (for the sole purpose, the lyricist concludes, of having sex.) I can only hope he’s unfamiliar with what Anne Frank actually endured up in her attic. Stank lyric, my brother. And while the commentary on 'Stankonia' is hardly confined to odiferous sex, any political/cultural/racial, etc. statements that were being made just got lost on me. Hard to listen for any potentially thoughtful ideas amongst the company of songs like, ‘I’ll Call B4 I Cum.’ Captivating rhyming and rhythm style, clever effects and quality general studio work, I’ll give you that. I wish I could’ve made more sense of the lyrics, though. No doubt a cultural diversity too large for an easy and immediate crossing by this listener. Or, it’s entirely possible that 'Stankonia' just stank.

Never heard this one before but brilliantly produced. I can hear the artistic vision behind this and can clearly see how this has influenced the rap genre.
Oh I am exciiiiited to see this one! Reminds me of middle school. Gasoline Dreams is very 90s hip hop. Each track is so different. I love this album. I will say I appreciate this a lot more now than I did 10 years ago at Coachella lol
Some jaunty beatz and definitely better than most hip-hop/rap - bug that's not saying much. I don't like it.

Ms. Jackson was the first Outkast songs I remember hearing from them. I loved it. What a great and unique sound they had. So Fresh and So Clean was pretty good too, BoB ok. This was the first time I heard the album though. They have a great sound. The explicit lyrics bring it down a peg for me though. Still a really great album. 3/5.
Very good!
A super important record to me. This was the first hip hop album I ever purchased. I had always been into other genres and never really understood rap so this album has a big nostalgia hit for me as a big door opener. That said, the album is still really good all these years later. Almost every song is solid. I actually forgot how good Humble Mumble and Red Velvet are to my ears. The 3 big singles from this album are still amazing. Snappin' and Trappin', We Love Deez Hoez, and Stankonia (Stanklove) are the only songs that I could take or leave. The skits are also something I could do without. Thankfully they are all pretty short. Part of me wants to give this 5 stars because of my personal attachment and the soaring high points of the album, but I think it's a 4 at this point for me. Still great and highly recommended but not perfect.

"So fresh and so clean, clean!" If I lived in a show like the Truman Show, I'd make sure this song played every time I brushed my teeth or got out of the shower. However, I didn't find much to love about remainder of the song... or the album for that matter.
Aaaah! I'm so conflicted! It sounds so fresh and so clean, but it leaves you feeling dirty! At least on a few tracks. If you took out "Gasoline Dreams," "Snappin' & Trappin,'" and "Gangsta Sh*t," this would be a top-tier album. With them, "Stankonia" is going to fall a star short. "Stankonia" includes all the OutKast hallmarks - incredible lyricism, flows, and funk aplenty. They were so unique and groundbreaking, but I wish that their style had influenced more of the musical style of Southern rap music. The stuff that I have heard coming out of Atlanta and the South in the last decade have been much less inspired. "Stankonia" wasn't my favorite OutKast album, though. It is apparently their most acclaimed, but "ATLiens" and especially "Aquemini" were better for me. But neither of those made the list! I went back to start "Aquemini," but will have to spend more time digging back into the OutKast catalogue. "Speakerboxx/Love Below" is on the list, but I don't remember that one beyond the overhyped singles. It's too bad OutKast is best known for "B.O.B." and "Hey Yaaaaaa(how many a's?)," because those are not their best (for me).
I love Outkast. I love their sound. Do I wish they bent their considerable talents towards worthier lyrical topics than their many conquests? Yes. However, contemplating the aftermath of those conquests as in "Ms. Jackson" makes it clear to me they have something more to say than just rapping about "Gangsta Shit" (but they can do that too).
OutKast’s sound is distinct and instantly recognizable. Their flow and lyrical constructions are refreshing. I could do without the misogyny and gangster-ish stuff (I didn’t keep track of the tracks), and I certainly would prefer not to hear CeeLo’s voice. But overall these feel like minor speed bumps. I want to listen to more OutKast. I have Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, but I never really got into it. I guess I need to go back earlier in their catalogue.
Okay, it's rap, isn't it? Some songs are obscene, and I have nothing else to say, kinda generic hip-hop music to my ear. Still better than generic blues rock.
I do, of course, love Ms. Jackson and the other hits from OutKast, but I never listened to the full album! This was excellent listening.
Intro—by no means the most memorable skit on an album laden with great ones (Kim and Cookie just jumped straight to the top of my favourites list)—sums up a couple of Stankonia’s virtues. To start, “bounce”—from the depths of the earth’s core, to the farthest reaches of space, to the Cadillac rolling down the street blasting the hottest new sound. This is a fizzy, bubbly, gloopy, rubbery, soft-play Adventureland of bounce. Next, that’s a harmonium and backwards tabla you can hear. In other words, this is insanely ambitious. Like, 1999 ambitious, There's A Riot Going On ambitious, Blonde on Blonde ambitious. Whether or not Big Boi and Andre intended to change the face/interface of rap and pop, they did. For me, at least. After this, nothing was the same. Correction: after Ms Jackson, nothing was the same. That beat—featuring, ahoy! backwards congas—blew my natural mind. I can still feel my 12-year-old brain struggling to contain the rush of endorphins when that wrong-way-round k - k - ku - k, k - k - ku - k loop starts. (Can you believe this is the first time I’ve realised how perfect it is that a song about bittersweet regret uses a backwards beat. It's literally the sound of turning back time.) So how did pop and rap become inseparable after Ms. Jackson? The best way I can explain it isn't great, but it goes something like this: Outkast set themselves the Prince-ly goal of recording literally every idea they’d ever had, carved out a galactic-sized sonic space for their exploration, then covered so much ground in the process that once they were done no one could claim a new sound without it feeling like Outkast got there first. The breadth of their exploration also goes some way to explaining Stankonia’s curious amorality, which swings from the criminally retrograde (Snappin’ & Trappin’) to politically fired-up (B.O.B.) to socially conscious (Toilet Tisha, Humble Mumble) to sexually chivalrous (I’ll Call B4 I Cum) to borderline misogynistic (We Luve Deez Hoez) without reconciling the differences. Forget the big picture, that'll take care of itself. But back to that intro. What it doesn’t tell us is anything about Big Boi and Dre as rappers. Now, as much as I like Big Boi (and I think Speakerboxxx is to The Love Below what Plastic Ono Band is to McCartney), I become deaf to everything around me when I know a 3000 verse is coming. That only happens with three or four rappers. I don’t know what gives someone that power, but he has it. “You can plan a pretty picnic but you can’t predict the weather.” What other rapper could come up with that? What folksinger? Then there’s the “knee / pad […] be / sad […]" rhyme scheme, his verses on Xplosion and Gangster Shit that make the guests preceding him vanish into obsolescence, and “Speeches only reaches those who already know about it / This is how we go about it.” Perhaps I'm too influenced by Stakonia's turn-of-the-century release when I say I hear it as the final proof of hip hop as the most progressive and inventive music of the last 30+ years. But just consider the differences between this and Mama Said Knock You Out or Fear of a Black Planet. Ten years in real time, light years musically. Finally, having said too much about Ms Jackson, a word on B.O.B. First, it’s actually the better song. Second, most MCs would die trying to rap over that beat. And third, it could end at 2:35 and still be one of the greatest rap songs ever. But then the guitar solo starts, followed by the scratches and cuts. Then the beat changes. The guitar becomes a riff. Andre counts in the gospel choir—1, 2, 3—who regale us with a chorus—“Power music electric revival”—to usher in this (alleged) new age of music. And, just to underscore what talented motherfuckers they are, they finish it off with a squiggly P-Funk synth they absolutely didn’t need to include. Then again, they didn't need to include three-quarters of what's here. That's masterpieces for you. They succeed in spite of their irregularities. Maybe because of them.

Easy five. Never realised how much influence Childish Gambino takes from this, especially on Awaken My Love. Cee Lo has popped up as a feature on heaaapps of the hip hop albums on here, man was prolific. Killer Mike on Strappin & Trappin takes the feature crown on this one though. Humble Mumble is a huge track as well. Impossible not to mention Ms Jackson, up there with the greatest songs of all time.

Snappy and melodious tracks namely in 'So Fresh, So Clean' and 'Ms. Jackson', 'Stankonia' is an obvious favorite with important contributions to hip-hop. Unapologetically OutKast, this album shines through its thoughtful beats, which in tandem with soulful rap, renders it one of the best OutKast albums. Fun, memorable, and clever; OutKast remains a treasured hip-hop sensation.

Couple of hits I recognized that were good. Otherwise too long and just ok. Hip hop is just not my thing.
Although it is a bit long at 75 minutes, it is a fresh sounding mix of rap and funky-rock with elements of jazz, blues and soul thrown in for good measure.
Cool hip hop album

YESSSSS! Oh how I miss these hip hop albums which are pure story telling with the crazy interludes. This was teenage Grace's absolute JAM, thank God for friends from Cov in school always bringing the edge and the grit into my middle class privileged life! This is a prime example of a classic hip hop album of the early noughties and I love it so much! Exciting innovative sounds, catchy hooks, lightning raps, bouncy beats, hard-hitting lyrics, important topics, it's got everything for me. When you listen, you can tell exactly what era it's from (although I was listening to this well after it came out as I was 8 at that point haha, the album is timeless!) I wouldn't change the album and it definitely belongs on this list!

Well I enjoyed hearing the memorable songs, but some of them did my nut in and this album felt too long. Maybe my covid brain wasn't up to it, but yeah was well ready for this to be done by the end
Wonderful stuff. I remember watching Ms. Jackson on a music channel just before school one day and thinking it was excellent. I haven't actually listened to it properly for a long long time so it's nice to know it is a very good song.

Not sure what I need to say here, but all of the songs on this album are hiphop anthems. Outkast deserve their status as GOATs of hiphop and this album is one of their best works.

I was expecting big things based on Ms. Jackson alone (Ms. Jackson is a 5). Maybe it was the unnecessary interludes. Maybe overall it was just too obnoxious. Or maybe it's because the God awful updated Rolling Stone 500 Greatest albums list has this baby at number sixty freaking four. Seems high. Which is something you might want to be while listening to this.

Långt album!! Medräknat ett par interludes är det 24 låtar långt. Min vetskap om Outkast har innan idag inte sträckt sig bortom "Hey ya" och "Ms.Jackson" men jag vågar ändå påstå att min bild jag hade stämde ganska bra. Det är inte helt min genre men det har ändå något extra. Jag går inte alls igång på partierna där de rappar, vet inte vad det är, jag kan bara inte frammana några känslor kring det. Det är dock ganska genomgående "softa beats" som rullar på i bakgrunden och en ljusare röst som pratar med den snabba rappen. Just dessa saker kan jag ändå påstå får en lite större inverkan på mig. Än så länge har jag inte hittat det Hip-hop-albumet som öppnar upp genren för mig, kanske kommer jag aldrig göra det? Det kanske är mer min inställning det beror på och att jag aldrig riktigt ger det en ärlig chans? Jag vet inte. Bäst: "Ms. Jackson" Jag gillade även den sista låten som var featuring Big Rube och Sleepy Brown: "Stankonia (Stanklove)"
This is so much more of an album than I expected, which admittedly was Ms. Jackson plus filler. Great bars, great production, and still holds up as pretty original and refreshing in comparison to a lot of other rap/hip hop, both then and now. The soul and funk influences go a long way. Drags a bit towards the end, but Stankonia is a great closer

This is a great album! BOB is one of my all time favorite rap songs. Not a fan of the Interlude tracks.

This is a quintessential 2000s hip hop album and it certainly feels like an encapsulation of the era in which it was made. Ms. Jackson is still a classic to this day and the bars in each song still hold up for the most part. I liked it but it’s not my favorite era of hip hop/rap. Fav songs: gasoline dreams, ms. Jackson, bombs over Baghdad

This came out in 2000? Damn I’m old. I wasn’t sure about this one when it started… aside from the throwback radio hits… but this album is pretty good.

Intro- oooh cheeky, suggestive women moaning! A nice bit of 60's esque organ and promises of a Gasoline Dreams- blaring fuzzed out guitar riff, tight breakbeat, impassioned vocals, strong opening after foreboding intro I'm Cool (Interlude)- palate cleanser So Fresh, So Clean - Silky smooth slice of R&B. They sing the hook in octaves, with falsetto! Electric piano plays the hook through the whole song and there are lovely string swells. Bass drops in and out. It's very mid-tempo, could cruise along to it. Although at face value, lyrics about someone being fresh, clean and sexy aren't quite as visceral as preceding track. But who cares? It's dope. Ms Jackson- Here we go! We're in it now, boys! The track getting all the love and praise 20 years on. The one I'd heard. I think of Mrs Jackson from my high school who taught Maths and Economics and probably thought Stankonia was The drums are brilliant in this- there are great gated rolls that hit every now and again, and stop-start beat with the vocals every now and then. So far- loving it. This is on track to be at least 4* The instrumentation is very organic I love the tone of their voices Snappin & Trappin - this isn't doing as much for me. Features Big Boi and not Andre- does this mean I'm an Andre 3000 man? I cringe at the crude lyrics like the sheltered prude I am - you may be a big boi but do we really need to know about what girls do to your dick? Spaghetti Junction - The retro skipping/mixing sound effects- was this knowingly retro and ironic back in 2000 or was it still a done thing? I like the brass samples but not much else here. I'm concerned this is falling down Kim & Cookie - Don't know what they're trying to achieve with these interludes... I'll Call B4 I Cum - Blimey, I'm too old for this. But wait- wow! They're being respectful! They are saying "after you" and it's 2000. The music sounds like a CASIO keyboard. BOB - This is excellent. Listen to that thumping bass! It's actually a little overpowering... so boomy... but I love the little bass riff that comes in with the chorus Xplosion - Is that harpsichord?!?! Musically, this feels a bit more in line with BOB and Gasoline Dreams. Apocalyptic... doom... catchy. I like this direction more. And that brilliant bass tone from BOB is back! We Luv Deez Hoes - please tell me this is ironic. And I'm missing a joke. (30 seconds in) Nope. Sarcastic or not, it's bad and just a bit tedious. I don't even like the music very much. All the good three tracks before is undone. Andre isn't here again! I must prefer him. Humble Mumble - I like the phrasing in the chorus. The keyboards are giving a nice mellow bed. Some really great drums kick in around 1:40. With an amazing flow. Drinkin Again- Quite a funny interlude! I almost smiled. ? - This is annoying because I've always wanted to do this for an album. It sounds brilliant. There are lots of questions. And what could almost be a theremin in the background. The production is dense. Bewildering. And stops to pour a drink and play an arcade game. Then piano! And filtered drums! And a complete change for the outro. Red Velvet - Was that Kate Bush?! (I googled and it was) Other than that this was a really boring track Gangsta Sh*t - I'm getting bored now. A lot of this album feels quite disappointingly generic. The first few tracks set me up for a lot of genre mash-ups and experimentation which hasn't quite stuck it out. All big singles in first half hour, were all great. Toilet Tisha - Just isn't justifying its length now. Slum Beautiful - Nope. Stankonia - With all the powers of my critical faculties, I can offer the insightful and balanced assessment that... I was bored. It had overstayed its welcome. I'd have cut this way down. 3 Likes: Gasoline Dreams Ms Jackson BOB 3 Strikes: Deez Hoes Toilet Tisha Those interludes Fave Track: BOB Least Fave Track: Deez Hoes Will I Listen Again? Yes! I'd like to get more into this but I think it's unlikely to be a classic for me, despite the potential I heard at the start. I'll listen and hope the second half will open up. Still prefer it to lots of hip-hop I know.
Outkast is a top 3 rap group of all time. This is like a 4.5 because of the interludes and what they did during their first three albums
This album starts out on an absolute tear, with Snappin & Trappin being the first song that I don't think of as an absolute classic. Honestly, though, every song on this album is good. For the most part, you could drop this album today and it would be just as impactful as it was when it was release. It's aged much better than most early 00s hip-hop 5/5

Of course I already listened to this one, but I am not (grieving) to listen to it again. What a crazy album, it deserves a 5 based on B.O.B alone, but personally I'm hovering a 4.2 to 4.6 rating. Such a creative album though, I'll give it a 5 because I want it to be recognized as one of the greats.

The best southern hip hop album of all time. Every track crushes the beats, the rhymes, and the production. Andre 3000 and Big Boi are on fire creatively and they know it. B.O.B. is the kind of song rappers dream of writing. As close to hip hop perfection as it gets.

Im back. The website has given me some eh albums so i took a break. So now we have a timeless classic to look back on. Stankonia, in my opinion, is Outkast's most 'Outkast' album. Combining their southern rap expertise with the electronic, then-modern 2000s feel. It's probably because of the production handed onto Earthtones III. But along with this feel comes with the vibes this album brings. There are like 8 skits on here, making the album feel bloated but in reality it goes by prefty fast. The features feel so natural too, rappers likr Mike or Gangsta Boo just spit their verses like they were born to. And in my opinion, while Aquemini is 100% a better album, songs like B.O.B., Ms. Jackson, & So Fresh So Clean are some of the best songs they have made due to the energy André & Big Boi bring to the table. Too longer and some filler, but some tremendous tunes here. Very difficult to gainsay the triple-punch of So Fresh, So Clear, Ms Jackson and B.O.B. Also some fantastic deeper cuts like Red Velvet and Humble Mumble.

Bangers all around, clearly a very influential album. Heavy at times, but even at those times, really fun to listen to. Capturing some real humanity with sick beats, varied sound, rooted in funk, soul, hip hop, electronic.

Outkast’s masterpiece and still the best rap album of this century. Broad and deep in scope, dense but accessible across its almost 75-minute running time (which for once isn't a second too long for an LP). Musically drawing on rock, jazz, blues and soul, Sly Stone, George Clinton, Hendrix, Electric Miles; it's all in there and you can hear these influences coalesce into something unique, urgent, exciting, transcendental and totally stoned but in the best way.
I like how this doesn’t sound dated.

Malheureusement, la longueur de l'album ainsi que les interruptions répétées de mes collaborateurs pour raisons professionnelles ne peuvent permettre à l'album d'obtenir la sacro sainte note de 5/5, qui n'a toujours pas été attribuée de mon côté (mon compère Robtrippier ayant eu la main un peu lourde sur Back to Black, mais je ne peux lui jeter la pierre)
I didn't give this a proper listen but with Ms. Jackson and So Fresh, So Clean alone this album gets a 4.

Oh well, now I know how to misspell OUTKAST and feel good at the same time! Frequent sounds of arousal - I guess that music of sorts? Direct theft from Black Eyed Peas? They're the nearest to rap I ever got. The lyrics I could manage to catch seemed to frequently explicit (therefore loss of impact) I thought they had done a whole track about British Accent until I realised it was Mrs Jackson. Listened to half a dozen tracks and got REALLY bored. Life is to short for rap even in lockdown.

As Marge Simpson’s psychologist would say: it’s a rich tapestry. Great tracks mixed with some not so. ‘Snapping & Trappin’ painful drum track- skipped. Outkast always a mix of serious and taking the piss. I like the interludes in albums, but there could’ve been some tracks dropped from this lengthy album that goes for ever. Forever ever?
I only really knew Ms Jackson before this listen. It’s kind of an outlier. Big Boi is good but Andre 3000 is unreal. He’s in my top 5 rappers. A list I admittedly have yet to compile. I liked So Fresh, So Clean. I finally understand what my wife has been singing whenever I have a shower.
A couple of good ones but too many bad ones to make the list for me. And what was with all the interludes? it’s not like it was a really heavy or fast album where you need a breath. Just felt like filler!

Yeah, already understand 3 tracks in why it's on the 1001 - awesome hiphop flows with all kinds of other genres plugged in for visits. Just has that "seminal" feel to it. No doubt Gorillaz was hip to this duo as Dan started building his albums.

I love Southern rap, and Outkast are the progenitors of the whole thing. Atlanta wouldn't exist in music the way it does today if it weren't for Andre and Big Boi. Stankonia is a universally acclaimed classic and one of those essential albums that everybody should listen to. And in spite of all that, I can't give it a 5. Don't get me wrong, there are phenomenal classic tracks ("Bombs Over Baghdad", "Ms. Jackson", and "So Fresh, So Clean" come to mind) on this album. But there are also some odd choices ("Toilet Tisha") and some groan-inducing skits that should have been left off. Stankonia is absolutely worth a listen, but you're well within your rights to just stick to the highlights.

I thought the production was pretty good, but overall, the lyrics didn't speak to me, and it felt like an exercise in speed rapping. More is not better, especially if what you're saying is mostly meaningless.
Innovative and Bad Ass. outstanding Tag Team. Did not get 5 stars because the album overall was songs that were Grand Slam hits (miss jackson, so fresh/so clean, Hey Ya) mixed with songs that were just 'meh'

This is a solid album by Outkast, when they fully established their sound in a newer era. I unfortunately prefer their earlier stuff, but this is known as one of their best. I'm only giving this a 3 because they have better.

Very good rap album which I didn't like. Ms. Jackson was great but almost everything else is very much not my style. However I see why it's considered to be great and why it deserves to be on this list.

First time listening to this in full, and I understand why this is on the list. It sounded fresh and interesting, but I wasn't really into the interludes. Still, a solid record for sure, and I'd listen to it again!
Far better than I remember from my first listen; Certainly rewarded a closer listen. There's still a bit of patchiness, and the sheer number of skits has been commented on to death. But Gasoline Dreams is an absolute monster of a track which I missed the first time around, and the hits still hit. A big part of my perception of higher lows is the consistent-but-interesting production and way Big Boi and André 3000's voices slot into the mix.

OH MY GODDD this albums a 10 im just putting that on the table asap. its not because its consistent, cuz it aint. its probly my most inconsistent 10, but like..the sheer amount of ideas here overflowing thru every track is just overwhelming. i can never rly hate it. except 4 we luv deez hoes the chorus on that song is grating. also that guest verse on xplosion is fucking botdf-quality but with none of the charm. how!!!!! other th an that this is amazing. ms jackson has a rly interesting beat with choruses where everything just CLICKS. the verses feel chaotic and weird but then the chorus hits and it all just makes sense!!! b.o.b. is really cool too. but its a top 100 singvle on this site so who cares about it. the real shit: ill call before i come. very pretty song :) gangsta shit goes way harder than i expected btw. its one of the less original creative songs on this album but it doesnt matter cuz it fuckin goes/ the interludes are lame though

Not as bad as some rap I've heard from around the time, kinda catchy in places, cool mix of pop and rap, and fuck the chorus in ms jackson is gonna stay in my head for weeks now, but fuck.... no one needs an album that's 1hr 17min. lots of filler, interludes that add nothing, a couple of long plodding songs... would make an absolutely stellar 45min album though.
