Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I was like "the indie pop singer who had like one song? OK..." Then I started listening and realized I was thinking of "Feist". Anyway, as for the review of this album, I thought it was very weird but it kept me listening. It was better than I thought it would be, and found myself listening more than once. 3.5 stars
Weird. 2.5
Was OK.
Good Krauty fun, with the influence quite clear right out of the gate. Lots of vibe-y weirdness mixed in with a few pure and vintage psyche-y lava lamp flourishes. There is perhaps too much that plays as novelty/oddity now, though the avant-garde bits (e.g., "Krautrock" and "Giggy Smile" and "Lauft Heiss") resonate best and most. Perhaps the listening experience would be aided by some vintage '70s European narcotics (preferably hash).
Can see how it was groundbreaking way back when, but ultimately didn't do a whole lot for me. Didn't hate it, there were a few moments I liked, but that's about it honestly.
It was fine. It had good and bad parts.
I can see the relevence but otherwise not a particularly stirring listening experince
It was ok I guess. Should have smoked a Doobie beforehand, maybe then I would have given it a 4
The psychedelic vibes start to drag on but good songs on there
I liked this a little better than the Kraftwerk, Can, and Tangerine Dream albums on this list. I guess Krautrock is just not my genre. 5/10
Not sure why we needed this many Faust albums on this list
1st song was awesome.
some good Rock but then quite a bit of experimental style noise which just annoys me when listening 3.4
Liked the first track but was otherwise not taken by it. Not so bad as to earn a 2 but a weak 3 for sure
I did not get a lot from this. Can't say it was bad, but it also was not rememberable.
experimental and really interesting, as well as a good classic rock sound. hard to find what version to listen to tho
alright 2.7
okay
Kind of interesting in the way i'm okay being challenged, though the more lyrics in the music, the more quirky it gets... which isn't always a fit. Enough interesting things here to give it some credit, though I don't expect i'll end up revisiting this.
Unusually this got better as it went on, still nothing amazing
A combination of noise and 70s action / porn music that likely spawned all the memes about what 70s porno music sounded like. Awesome, but pretty boring.
Tried to listen a couple of times but never got all the way through the album. Really enjoyed the first track but subsequent tracks weren’t as good. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and go 3*
German ambient music, just wished the songs were a bit shorter.
When I first saw this was the album of the day I thought it was Feist. VERY different from what I was expecting when I started listening. Album was all over the place. Overall, I enjoyed it!
I don't think I really needed to hear that before I die. I listened several times - and really wanted to like it - but, it fell short for me. I'll give it 3/5 just because I think I might need to hear it another 100x to appreciate it.
it’s fine. cool moments. the first song is pretty vibey but i guess you have to be in a mood for it. it’s not an album that warrants a repeat listen cuz honestly they have better albums, like Just Us. this album most feels like drugs were involved or something idk.
OG krautrock. De verwachte weirdness
Disk 1 1. Not my thing 2. Liked it much more, brought a little bit of joy and new instruments that I liked 3. Catchy in the beggining. Big turn around 4:40 4. The hell is that? You can't make me believe that anyone hears that on purpose 5. Definitily not my thing although the instrumental is quite catchy ; almost pleasing in the beginning but ended with just a melt of random sounds. Ends suddenly ?? 6. This one is OK until the end 7. Forgettable Disk 2 1. Slower, chiller, I like it 2. Liked it too, chiller
So confusing. My thoughts on it ranged from 'wow this is pretty cool' to 'wow wtf is this?' That's probably the point, though. Music sure would be boring if everything had sensible rhythm and melodies, I guess? Admittedly, I kind of liked some parts of it. A little bit. Standout tracks (well, maybe specific parts of the track) are Jennifer and Just a Second.
Very experimental. Need to dive deeper into it.
3-
Krautrock should be more spicy. This kinda just kept going in Ernest.
shrug
Quite enjoyed this. I suspect King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard don't mind a bit of Faust
Krautrock. Rock experimental.
If I’m forced to listen to German fusion, then this is the album I can tolerate most. They had just the right amount of experimental to make it exciting while also keeping it enjoyable. Unfortunately, the most enjoyable Faust songs are still semi-annoying. It’s as if each song is missing something integral to it being great, whether that’s lyrics, rhythm, justifiable runtime, too much experimenting, etc. It’s very strong in both directions, so I give it an average score, but it is by no means a “meh” album. 3/5
Cool sounds for an instrumental album
Little prog rock-y for me. Probs won't listen again. Was cool to listen thru once.
Interesting. I'm glad I heard it. It's not an incredibly appealing genre, IMO, unless maybe you're very autistic -- it's a little too mechanical, though I didn't hate it; I'd rather listen to it that most modern pop, modern "country" or modern R&B. For novelty and historic purposes, I'll give it 3 stars.
Faust certainly sold his sold his soul to the devil for this one. Interesting listen. Here, Kiddo. Happy Birthday. Yes you can... you can take this money from me! For God sakes it's not much now take it!! And don't you dare leave it here. I'm sorry... I just miss your Uncle Ben so much.
Moments of experimental excitement are ultimately too few and far between in this over-fermented work of krautrock.
Good music to code by. Another group I'm not familiar with at all. If I had to guess the release year after listening to it, I would have guessed mid to late 70s, so it's probably another example of an album being on the list because it influenced so many others in the genre.
Kind of a unique bridge between Krautrock and more widely listened to genres like jazz. Ambient, meditative, but occasionally catches a good groove. Call it a 3.5. Favorite tracks: "Giggy Smile", "Run"
I had never heard of Faust before, I'm not sure if I would listen again but it was a good record, some nice soundscapes and a bit dreamy and ethereal.
Krautrock. Ni fu ni fa.
Krautrock. Ni fu ni fa.
Alright but certainly not great. First song sounded like the opening of a roses song.
aight
Pretty left field choice here. Sine waves and early synth sounds were interesting. I would have enjoyed it far more without the singing.
The opening track tests your patience slightly but after that there’s some great stuff on here. The Sad Skinhead and Picnic on a Frozen River… are both very catchy, and it’s abundant with the tight grooves that krautrock is renowned for even if the music over the top is a bit more chaotic
(Holy, you'd think at some point they'd fix the song titles) HL: "Krautrock", "Jennifer" ""Run" (track 7) March 22, 2023
Pretty standard 70's rock. Bit of a jam session.
Liked it
An interesting krautrock album that runs the gamut from ambient to industrial, showcasing some exceptional guitar tones and musicianship throughout. Not sure this one wholly gels as an experience for me given how some songs just don't fit with the longer, nigh-orchestral tracks and their flow, but an engaging and novel listen nonetheless.
The opening track sounds like hearing an open mic at the Irish Club through the wall, 11 min of quarter note bass fifths. Overall, interesting but not enjoyable. I don't think I'll ever enjoy Krautrock, but I guess I'll keep on trying.
Cool
First half good. Second half bad
Ritmos un tanto psicodélicos, prolongación de instrumentos, sin casi partes vocales. Se deja escuchar porque tampoco es demasiado intenso.
I almost wrote this off completely at first. "Krautrock" really drags and not much happens in its almost 12-minute run time. Past that track, there is some cool stuff, though.
Repetitive, but in a good way. Takes its time fleshing an interesting musical pattern and then goes balls-deep into another musical realm. Soothing albeit boring vocals which compliment the main ideas. Fairly experimental in use of electronic synths. Definitely a unique sound!
Krautrock... this album starts off with a vaguely boring long track that feels like it might get interesting any moment now, but just doesn’t get there. My first thought was this was just some early electronica until I read the blurb. A lot of the songs start well imo but devolve into discordant notes and chaos (but not in a cool way). Still by the end of it I'm curious about if maybe there's bands that do it better? or maybe I just start skipping songs when they get messy... Saved tracks: The Sad Skinhead, Just A Second (Starts Like That!) /Picnic On A Frozen River/Deuxieme Tableaux, Giggy Smile
Interesting but didn’t make me want more
LOL at some fans apparently labelling this a "sell-out" album. Could be true for all I know, but it's still one of the least mainstream sounding records on this list. I *think* I like krautrock based on what little I've heard before but honestly this has left me none the wiser about what krautrock actually is. Surely there are about 8 different genres on here...? Consider me suitably beguiled though.
Pretty weird. Early 70's come through again.
Did not expect to, but loved this. A real variety of music, from the pomp of the long opening track, to the softer cuts on Side Two. A real surprise.
Intersting noise but never got beyond that
Despite the opening track being far too long, there were quite a few bits I liked on the album. Overall it's all over the place, didn't quite work for me on first listen, but reckon it's worth a second chance at some point. 2.5
Hypnotic and mesmerizing.
Clearly way ahead of it's time and was probably an inspiration for other artists I've listened to. That being said, sounded sloppy, unfocused and a bit "jammy", there's stuff here I don't think should have made the cut.
crazy thing
Love the blank sheet music album cover. I liked the energy of the first song - it felt like a continuous building of excitement. Loved the full drumset entrance at 7:00 minutes. Really transformed the song. Big fan of the xylophone in "The Sad Skinhead". Also didn't expect vocals- I wasn't sure if this was an instrumental only group. Overall I thought it was OK. 3/3
Cool , a little confused but I’m not too mad about it
A very uneven album. Kicks off with the mesmeric Krautrock, but followed up by some fairly insubstantial tracks
왠지 모르겠지만 낯익은 국제시장 록
I've heard this like 3 times now and I just think it's worse Can. The generator is just teasing me. I know Tago Mago is on the list - I haven't given a 5/5 in a long time! Give me Can so I can listen to the superior hour-long album of German people summoning demons and speaking in fart sound effects. Germany's got some of the coolest music ever, man. When you think "American music" you think of your typical yeehaws and Alabamas. When you think "British music" you think of the Beatles. When you think "German music" you think you're going to need an exorcist. My point here is that more American bands should put dead fetuses on their album covers.
This feels like something I would normally eschew, but I guess I'm in a good mood today. Still not particularly noteworthy, but it was pleasant enough. Best track: Läuft...Heißt Das Es Läuft Oder Es Kommt Bald...Läuft
Not unpleasant as background working, and probably great live as well. Grat that there is an actual track called 'krautrock'
I was both born and died before the first song ended Feels raw, feels good on occasion
I had no clue that I would be nodding along to 14 minute Krautrock tracks, thinking “Yeah, this would totally work for my morning run.”
If the whole album was like track 1, this would be a 5.
Yeah man!
6/10
Interesting.
Early Kraut with some Zappa influences, fun. But not brilliant.
Giggy Smile will haunt me in my nightmares. Other than that, I liked this album. Interesting from a musical standpoint, but mostly pleasing to the ears. Haven't really listened to this kind of music before. 3.5ish.
Long and a lot of instrumental parts, but for some reason I kept listening. The songs could be somewhat shorter for me. Overall I enjoyed it and have to listen to this one again. Favourite song : - Giggy smile
Não é muito minha pilha
3.5, bywał męczący w trakcie
This album really drives home the point of the project. If I didn’t have to listen to the full album I would have turned it off after the first song. But listening to the full album changed my perspective. The instrumentation is really interesting. I don’t enjoy the lead singers voice very much on certain tracks as well.
That's an interesting, curious oddity of an album. I'd quite like to be 20 years younger and listen to it live in a sweaty club in Leeds while drinking cider.
Legendary Kraut Rock album, must have sounded new in the past.
I'm not familiar with Faust but the album cover is promising. The track list isn't though, but that's ok. Diving in right away I think this is the kind of thing I'm inclined to like. 11 min in I'm not so sure. The Sad Skinhead immediately rewards my patience and from there it's a wild, uneven ride. Parts of Picnic On A Frozen River were a complete delight as the song wore on (and on). On balance more to like than dislike. 3.5 stars but rounding down for the length of the opening track.
I quite enjoyed this, but some of the songs were too long. Ergh, who cares? We're all going to die soon anyway. Jizz Hornkamp better join Nottingham Forest.
Starts good and then it doesn’t get any better but worst
Is this the beginning of krautrock?
Interesting exposure to a foreign artist but it hardly leaves a lasting impression.
Krautrock sounds to me always as if one turned the "progressive" dial a little bit too far. Just a bit too weird and experimental for me
Wow, really strange and interesting sounds here. Sounds other-wordly, like music from a far away world. Some parts are so good!
Eh. Novelty music.
This is a pretty weird one. Not entirely sure if I liked it or didn't like it. But it was interesting and now that it's finished, my ears feel just a little bit too empty.
Sold their soul to be ‘palatable’
Sounds okay, but doesn't really grip me. Too repetitive in some songs and all over the place in others. I think I prefer what NEU! and CAN are doing in this genre.
A nice sonic space to be in while going about the world.
Chill, mostly piano-y vibes with a bit more eccentric stuff tossed in. 3.5
Honestly, I'm not sure what to make of this. It's largely just noise, but not bad noise, but also not musical either. Giving it a second listen and still nothing is really standing out. Might enjoy it more if I gave it more attention.
Weird, fun, not unpleasant, but probably not revisiting this.
Actually pretty cool! I think it was track 2 I liked best
Beau laboratoire !
Up and down. Experimental, but not necessarily enjoyable.
Never connected with me. But its the beginning of something
still don't quite get what krautrock is
This was better than I was expecting. Not having to try to remember my three years of high school German was nice and unexpected. And the one German titled song was French. Krautrock at least on this album feels like the 80s landed in German far before they hit the US. I liked parts of it and others were a little too experimental than I care to listen to.
pretty sweat
An interesting one
This had a lot of interesting musical elements, but I personally don't have the attention span for a lot of 11-minutes songs.
prefer me san and neu
Eh. I don’t know that I could appreciate it.
Nice bit of kraut rock
This is a lot folksier than I remembered! Less robotic than you'd expect for krautrock, it's an unexpected delight.
Hello, I was today years old when I learned that krautrock is not purely an electronic music genre. It turns out it's literally a rock genre, including guitars doing all that guitar can do. I was perhaps also expecting some sort of epic jam excursions but even the 11+ minute opening track was a pleasant easing into the album rather than a roadblock. I'm not sure if I'd ever listen to this again, but it's a good addition to consider in the history of music.
music noises
Electronic from 2006
Why is this
First exposure to krautrock, and that first song "Krautrock" almost made me stop listening. The second song "The Sad Skinhead" was much better. The rest of the album wasn't bad and was semi-enjoyable, but not enough to make me say that I have to go purchase it or listen again. 3/5
No bad. Not great.
Cool to hear a genre spawned out of the culture of West Germany before the reunification. It's definitely not my thing, but I respect it.
Not bad. Not great. Not my thing. But some pretty good rock.
Oh, I am surprised. I didn't finish the first song bc I thought it was boring and assumed the rest of the album would be boring too. But it's quirky. WOAH i just noticed how long these songs are. I like this but probably won't listen to it again
Forerunner of Krautrock movement that gave us CAN, Neu!, and Kraftwerk. Proceeds industrial music which would slowly develop over the next 2 decades. But for now, people are just playing with electronics making interesting but premature sounds. It's decent and enjoyable with experimental noise that dates ok. I like "Jennifer" but nothing else really sticks out.
Weird and wonderful
Noise that slowly makes more and more sense over time
Interesting. Don't love tho
Veoma talentirani krautrock izvođači, koje valja poslušati ako ulaziš u ovaj žanr.
Most of it wasn't available on spotify
Decent album, interesting music, not something i would actively go out to listen to again. Wouldn't mind stumbling into it again.
It was ok.
It's another one of the albums that seems like its on the list because of its influence. That being said, it was quite pleasant to have on in the background, I was expecting worse
Instrumental jive punky panic Mario adventure
Both liked and hated it
Like a bit of krautrock
El "krautrock" era esto. Me recuerda los momentos más lisérgicos de Pink Floyd con Syd Barret o incluso los Genesis con Peter Gabriel. Interesante.
A cracking moody experimental german exploration. The genesis of the term "Krautrock". I don't like it as much as a lot of German rockers, especially Kraftwerk and Neu!
kinda have mixed feelings, good at some parts, not good at others
Pretty good krautrock. 6/10
good but i'd never listen to it on my own
I enjoyed this, and particularly the 'noisy' elements. Probably not something I would choose to put on and actively listen to, but good background music.
Atmospheric
not a lot of of vocals, lots of experiment with sound. Not bad as background music while working on a project
Was alright, Looooong first track but ok.
Ik word er onrustig van
Yeah this is basically like over half of all these other albums.
- Hmm. Well. I respect the audacity and experimentation. And there is a certain amount of meditative state that you enter when you play the nearly 12-minute "Krautrock" and just let it take the wheel. - Buuuuuttttt....a lot of these songs are pretty unbearably long (see previous point). And many do not bring that same meditative state, especially when the music essentially breaks down into noise. I am not against that on principle, but you do have to convince me it is worthwhile. - "Giggy Smile" is a rough listen...yeeeeeesh was that driving me up the wall.
Initially I was thinking it was a fine but not great album then those random non-musical sounds kept showing up in an otherwise fine sound. Super annoying!
Not sure what the fuck that was but it was cool. Krauty and spacey. Must revisit this one later on.
I'm a big appreciator of freaky shit, but it didn't induce any emotion in me. There was no real arc with the music, and it didn't sound nice enough to be good ambient music for me. Some good bits (and I appreciated the sounds of Dalek torture) but overall not a passing grade I'm afraid.
The word that comes to mind is "palatable." Not sure that is a word musicians are hoping people would use to describe their work.
Harsh metal
4/10 No malo pero es aburrido, son canciones con únicamente la instrumental. Sirve para tener de fondo sin que moleste o sea invasivo, pero oara escuchar solo hay en un punto que cansa
Mostly noise presented as music. Did I really need to hear this before I die? No. Is it at least something a little different than yet another 90s Brit Pop album. Yes. For better and for worse.
This album caught my attention with every song and then intentionally lost it through the seemingly overly eclectic nature of the album
I am sure this was quite something in its day, but now is just very long in the tooth, and kind of unfocused which is not a good combination.
The whole thing was a bit strange tbh.
A weird one, hated it at first, then quite liked it, then sort of ambivalent to it. Not really my sort of thing at all but didn’t switch it off….. 🤷🏻♂️😂
Painful listen, really strange.
Do German musicians know they don’t have to be weird? I think only the Scorpions understand this. Anyway, this is a Krautrock album that is mostly terrible. It’s a lot of droning rhythm guitar, reverb, and electronic noise. A couple interesting elements from time to time, but they’re so few and far between that it doesn’t save the overall record. 2/5, too much unpleasant noise.
I kept waiting for the first song to end and it just ... never did. Now apply that sentiment to the whole album. Begrudging shout out to the sneezing at the beginning of the second track and the lyric, 'lots of naked Germans' in Picnic on a Frozen River, Deuxieme Tableaux for the mental image I did not need before 11am on a Tuesday, I guess.
Wildes Durcheinander.
Zu krautig für mich
Not for me, but interesting for what it is.
Some of the noise was OK, but I wouldn't ever want to listen to this again.
I don’t get the appeal of Krautrock as a genre. The first song on this album was three minutes of the same bars repeated and I was already annoyed. The rest of the album had more variety but this just doesn’t click for me.
"Krautrock" -- many argue this is just noise, but compared to the album I got yesterday, this is just a more primitive beep boop album. Not for me though, hard skip on the last 6 or so tracks where the guitar distortions were about to trigger a migraine. 2*
(3/7) sometimes pleasant but never for very long
Not my style honestly. But it was a fun listen. It’s the same way lighting a Bunsen Burner is fun in science class, but not fun in a small urban apartment. Don’t do that!!
Could've been better.
Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Completely unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? I don’t know who this is First impressions: German prog rock? Don’t know how I’ll feel about this. Favorite track(s): Jennifer, Läuft...Heißt Das Es Läuft Oder Es Kommt Bald...Läuft Overall Thoughts: I guess I liked it as much as any prog It was fine it didn’t bother me but I didn’t fall in love with it the way others seem to.
Sometimes you just aren’t in the mood for noise and that’s OK
Me molesta q la gran mayoría sea tipo techno chau
Not the best krautrock out there
Similar to early '70s, Pink Floyd, but much less creative or enjoyable. Not much here really. Debated between one and two stars, probably would have given it one and a half if I had the chance.
some of these tracks are just irritating noises but the rest of them are really good songs interrupted by irritating noises
No es lo mio..
okay i love a bit of noise and experimental stuff sometimes this album made me feel really uncomfortable for some reason giggy smile was alright though
Better than some of the other experimental albums I've heard, but still not really my thing.
yep......nope......
Very Unique
A big pass!
Lot of noise and not great vocals. Vocals were also mixed very softly so you couldn’t quiet hear the lyrical content.
Interesting sounds but I would never play this again unless I was not right.
..
I listened to the 2006 remaster for this review. Vocals are bad. Instrumentals are okay, but weird. It doesn't really feel like the tracks come together to form a cohesive album. 1.5 stars.
Krautrock - that's the name of the genre as well as the name of the nearly 12-minute distorted psychedelic instrumental that opens Faust IV. I wasn't quite feeling this one.
Well, I guess you COULD start an album with 11+ minutes of anxiety, but it sure doesn't make folks want to finish the rest of it. Didn't get much better. As soon as there was something interesting, they Andy Kaufmanned me ⭐⭐
Yesterday, I had "Opus Dei", so I guess it's time to continue my German-ish Industrial Rock streak(sorry, it's been over four months since "Kollaps"). The opening track got me excited, just to be letdown on the experimentation for the rest of the album. I appreciate that, but not enough for an album of it. Unless you're a completionist(like me), skip this album, and listen to "Led Zeppelin IV", or "Faust" by Gorillaz. Favorite Track: "Krautrock".
Okay
This was an interesting listen and a really unique sound, but I don't know how much I enjoyed it. I doubt I would return to any track in the future and say, "I want to listen to that one again!"
It just felt like noise that didn't really add anything to my day. Sometimes they were trying to be juvenile funny and other times trying to be serious and melodramatic. Just confused and not amused.
Probably why I've never heard of this album from 1973 is cuz it's some bullshit.
peepshowsausage.gif
Maybe my brain is broken, but I found some of this to be oddly soothing. Some of it made me want to not have ears and I will never listen to this again, but I didn’t hate it.
pass
Forgettable. Nothing stands out.
This album just didn't come up on the right day for me. I'm not upset by any of the music, but I'm also not really hearing it. Trying to describe it a friend I played a few minutes from different songs and appreciated them more than when I was listening straight through. And I can't tell if that's a reflection on me at this moment or on how the entire album is. For the time being, it's not right for me. I believe it will grow on me. I'll come back to it on another day and see what's changed.
Ok album, kinda boring. 2/5
I’m all for experimental, psychedelic, or whatever this was trying to be. I can respect what they were trying to do at the time, but nothing about this was pleasant to my ears.
Pues muy raro, no digo que este malo el disco, solo muy raro. No es para mi la verdad, al menos no por ahora.
Interesting style
Nah. Appreciate their social commentary…but not enough to listen for long
I think i liked the first song. Then nothing after
Ambient Music Simply isn't for me
hace piuiiuuu piuuuii y luego glomb glomb cronk y luego otra vez piuiiuuu piuuuii y media hora más tarde una canción de folk, no sé
Best Song: Picnic On A Frozen River, Deuxieme Tableux. A tremendously okay prog song. Worst Song: Jennifer. The back half of this song is just straight up fuzz, that suddenly drops away to some nonsequitor harpsichord. Why. Overall: Some of the short tracks are fun(ish), but even they suffer from some impulse where the good bit gets abruptly abandoned in favour of some amusical junk.
Overall: 4.3/10 The songs are beautifully composed, and that appreciate. However, this isn’t something that I’m gonna be bumpin down the street in my car. I would definitely study to some of these songs especially “piano piece” This was a nice album but I won’t be revisiting it again.
I was excited and then disappointed
ehh 2
Meh
"Art Rock, Experimental, Industrial, Krautrock, Prog Rock" typically means dumpster fire to me, but Krautrock - which I'd never heard of before - gave me pause. And we have an hour+ double-album that starts with an 11:48 song. Not great, guys. That first song, an instrumental, was not offensive, and I thought we had a real shot at 3* for a change. And then, nope. End of day, a pioneer of krautrock is the only reason this isn't a 1*. This 2* should be replaced by Metallica's S&M, which is an easy 4* and somewhat experimental.
Got better as it progressed but sadly I struggle with krautrock
Now That's What I Call Krautrock! The last song on this was pretty good. The rest was definitely Krautrock.
4/10
Didn't finish it, but I didn't love what I heard.
Never heard of them and no idea what this is going to be. Let’s jump in. First track is….noise? Funny, it sounds way more recent than 1973, like a sound that would’ve came way later. Didn’t think I was enjoying the long opening track but by the end thought it was okay and at least interesting. My main thoughts while listening to this album in general are huh this is interesting followed immediately by I don’t think I like this. Jennifer is kind of amazing. If you told me this song was from an indie band from Brooklyn in 2013, I wouldn’t have questioned it. What a vibe this song has until that crazy instrumental two minute outro. It’s kinda crazy that every song is like hey this is a fun jam and then two minutes later it’s like just kidding let’s hit you with some crazy noise. Hey what if half way through we just hit you with a sax solo. It all feels jazz and jam band influenced. You never know where a track is going to go. I don’t know if this is all good or not, but it’s certainly interesting. Would feel mean to give something so original a low rating, but not sure it all works for me. I think I’ll settle on a 2, because I agree this is an album you should experience, but not sure I will ever choose to experience it as a whole again. But I would absolutely put Jennifer on. Really enjoyed that song.
Didn't love it. Found it more grating and annoying than anything else.
Zu krass
not enough good songs to qualify as a good album
No but almost maybe. But No......for now
Added nothing new to the psychedelic genre and got samey
Just not for me.
The universe heard me grumble about Pink Floyd and laughed in my face. Changed how I felt about Germans. 3/10
Not really for me. Almost like a demo tape. Can get that experimental sound, not terrible
Krautrock? It's a vibe for sure. Putting "The Sad Skinhead" on the playlist because it's quirky.
Those Germans are weirdos 100% haven’t heard anything like it, was definitely not expecting it to be as experimental as it was. I do like the sound though I feel like Krautrock overstayed its welcome by about 8 minutes and I thought my audio was completely broken on the last song but the other songs were palatable enough According to Wikipedia the band vanished for like 15 years after the release of this album and then resumed touring like nothing happened lol
Weird intro song, no idea what this album is supposed to sound like from it. I don’t get this intro, it’s almost twelve minutes long and it’s filler? What kind of intro is that? The second song is good, much better than the intro, but is then followed yo by another song that is just filler again. I like the second song, but these stupidly long songs are going to be the end of me. I like some of the songs, it’s just everything else that lowers the album for me. I’d give it a one, but, unfortunately, I really liked one song.
3/10, boring?
The first notes on the first track petrified me. I listened to Spaceman 3 two days ago, will I have to do it again? I skipped to the second track and was pleased to know that it was not the case (and the first song changed its tune when I gave it a fair listen). I didn't care much for the sounds, but it sounded like they wanted to do something fun and it was not too insulting to the ears.
Couldn’t finish both discs.
this is kinda boring fr
While listening I remember enjoying this album, but removed from it I can’t remember a single thing about it, good or bad.
I like the idea of Krautrock but I pretty much only explore it via approximations by other artists I like more. Like, I want to tell people I like Neu! and Can and Faust and Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk but instead I just listen to David Bowie doing his imitation of them on Low and Heroes and Lodger and feel oh so very cultured. My favorite parts of this album are various scattered individual instrumental parts rather than full songs but I did really like "Giggy Smile" and "It's a Bit of a Pain."
Years of economic hardship and fascism, and this is some of the best music it created? Damn, the U.S. charts are going to be weird in 2045. Maybe after more listens I'll change my tune to "Years of economic hardship and fascism produced some incredible counter-cultural music" but I'm not there right now. Really liked the hectic build of "Krautrock", but the rest had flashes of stuff that I enjoyed between longer spells of sound that I didn't like.
< the Beatles Apparently "krautrock" sucks?
I had to listen to this record on the same day as an instrumental Brian Eno record, so my patience for soundscape style music is wearing thin. This record is experimental background music. It’s fine. It’s cool at times, but very boring for an entire record. I don’t think it belongs on this list. Way more deserving records out there.
Krautrock. Dificil. No me agarra en los mejores días ni con tanta paciencia para entenderlo. Quizás a futuro cambie. Por ahora, 4/10
some parts of this were okay….. but others were excruciating
Good background music. Don't like disc one and two are the same other than remaster.
Drugs needed
Yeah, not for me. It’s not bad like edm is bad, it’s bad like a go-nowhere soundscape. 2.5/5
2 “krautrock” albums in a row on a random list is crazy. Never heard of album or band. I like the intro song and how it continues to build up. Relatively basic but not in a bad way. Spoke a little too soon. It never really reaches a crescendo which is a let down. 12 minutes of GTA loading screen music. It’s not bad but also not necessarily good. Wasn’t expecting English lyrics. Sad skinhead is goofy in the worst way. Bullshit song. Over produced. Guitar is good tho. Jennifer has a lot of interesting sounds going on. Actually work pretty well all together. Really good/unique bass. Not a fan of the vocals. Last 2 mins are interesting. I like the piano to close it. Guitar on just a second is really good. Wish they stuck with it. The bug part in the middle sucks. Not really a fan of the end either. Again, first two mins of giggy smile are fun. Middle is a lot better than second. Really good bass line. Sax is fine. Would’ve liked more of everything else. Another switch up at 4 mins, I like this one too. Back half was kind of whack. This album just isn’t my style. Laugh is fine but more of the same. A lot going on through out. After 4:30 it’s simply a new song. Pretty cool, I liked it more than the first half. I like it’s a bit of pain, I think if the rest of the album was closer to this one(aside from the weird guitar in the middle) I would’ve had a better feeling about it. Mid to bad album. 2 stars.
Pretty unique for 1973 but after so much has been built on this it’s not very interesting to listen to today
"Faust IV" is undoubtedly a bold and ambitious album, yet it ultimately sits on the cusp of a "one-off" curiosity rather than a record built for repetitive listening. The experience begins with "Krautrock," an 11-minute, 47-second exercise in avant-garde patience. While its steady build is ambitious, it only just manages to retain interest until the drums finally kick in at the seven-minute mark. It is a striking piece of music, but one I doubt I will ever consciously select to hear again. The rest of the first side is defined by jarring contrasts. "The Sad Skinhead" is a complete pivot, jaunty, brief, and almost childlike in its delivery. This is followed by "Jennifer," which begins with a melancholic beauty before morphing into an experimental soundscape and concluding with plaintive piano. The sheer lack of sonic connectivity between these three tracks is both the album's greatest strength, and its most exhausting trait. The second half of the album continues the band's habit of "bait-and-switch" song-writing. "Just a Second" starts as a conventional rock track with a chugging riff, only to dissolve into electronic bird tweets, interference, and ambient noise. Similarly, "Picnic on a Frozen River" and "Giggy Smile" flirt with jaunty nonsense and conventional structures before resolving into a repetitive, jazzy motif and ending on a plaintive acoustic guitar. The album winds down with "Läuft...Heißt Das Es Läuft," a largely ambient and plaintive soundscape, followed by the closer, "It's a Bit of a Pain." The final track is underpinned by lovely, delicate guitar work and a soft vocal delivery, but even here, the melody is rudely interrupted by harsh electronic noise and a loud, fuzzy guitar solo, a final reminder of the band's refusal to be "pleasant." "Faust IV" is a challenging listen that occupies a strange space between two and three stars. There's a "push-and-pull" that I'm assuming Faust intended, they want the listener to feel both charmed and slightly perturbed at the same time. While I respect the boldness of their approach and the flashes of pretty melody, it fails to justify a return visit. It works well as a one-off experimental experience, but it lacks the cohesion required for repeat listens. Bold, but not for me. Two stars. Side one 1 "Krautrock" (3/5) 2 "The Sad Skinhead" (2/5) 3 "Jennifer" (3/5) Side two 1 "Just a Second" (3/5) 2 "Picnic on a Frozen River, Deuxieme Tableau" (2/5) 3 "Giggy Smile" (2/5) 4 "Läuft...Heißt Das Es Läuft Oder Es Kommt Bald...Läuft" (2/5) 6 "It's a Bit of a Pain" (3/5) Total - 20 Average - 2.50 201/1001 113/201 albums reviewed were new to me.
Not really my favorite, as far as Krautrock goes. A lot of it is noisy and abrasive, but I don't really hear much more than that. Doesn't have the groovy jams of Can or the vibes of Ash Ra. The Wiki states it's more experimental than actual music, but I don't really see it's experimental nature as being that much more ahead of the curve compared to other early 70's experimental work. Picnic On A Frozen river makes a great song for the Garfield Kart soundtrack though.
Krautrock. En sjanger jeg ikke har stort kjennskap til. Når jeg lytter til dette, kan jeg forstå hvorfor. Selv om enkelte av sangene har sin appell, fremstår albumet som helhet rimelig sært. Top 3: Picnic On A Frozen River (…), The Sad Skinhead, It’s A Bit Of A Pain
Musikk fra et kjipt, eksperimentelt sirkus. Men godt driv, det har de.
It’s not so terrible it makes you cringe, but it’s weird enough to make you wonder exactly who needs to hear this before they die? Certainly not me.
I like the first album, but this is pretty bleh. 2/5
I liked parts.. but then they ruined it with their techno stuff.
This is huge sh*t. You can always make it pass by the way of intellectualism to make it sound good, say it’s a precursor of better music bla-bla-bla But there is nothing to take of the 11 mins of the first track. 2 stars because one or two songs are interesting, nothing more. The album as a whole is sh*t.
Hmmm
Turned it off after the sheer dizziness of Giggy Smile
Germans are weird
I don’t know what I was expecting krautrock to mean but it wasn’t this. I enjoyed it but doubt I’ll be back.
It's weird but not in an interesting or experimental way. A lot of repetition, elements that never quite come together, and a lot of repetition. was leaning toward a generous 2 before I heard giggy smile
Meh. Too long, and I didn't care for it.
Melkoista pilipali musiikkia. Vaikea kuvailla, ei kuitenkaan mitään kauheen miellyttävää. Aika junnaavaa. Parhaat: Lauft....Heisst Das Es Lauft Oder Es Kommt Bald..Lauft
After the first song I thought this was a 1 star fpr sure, but it grew on me a little bit. Still nothing I’m likely to revisit but I’ll say 2 stars, even though I skipped through most of the latter half.
OK.
Not feeling this one. Not sure what they are trying to achieve here other than being ‘experimental’. Which is all well and good but it’s all over the place. It’s like they’re trying on a few different styles bur they’re not particularly good at any of them
Not great, but not good and not terrible. Ryan did describe it as noise.
what the FUCK is krautrock?
Lost interest quickly.
I liked the first instrumental song on the album, but found the rest of the album disappointing. I couldn't stand the vocals, and found even the other instrumental tracks grating. Not a great introduction to Kraut Rock.
For its age it's a pretty interesting and intriguing album, but I'm personally not a fan.
Experimental; has some nice grooves, but is overall not fully to my taste
It was not as bad as the first song. Kann man mal mit Sauerkraut verzehren.
i understand how this album has a cult following and it could be a vibe but the cutting of the sounds doesn’t agree with me but i respect it.
Album No. 0062 on my list. For whatever reason, I’ve never listened to much Krautrock so far. Faust IV was a completely new listen for me. I actually find it quite okay! I don’t think it’ll ever be something that really gets to me, really touches me. But I can a) appreciate the experimental nature of this and see its influence in the music that came after it. And b) some parts of this are kinda groovy, kinda nice. “The Sad Skinhead”, and “Jennifer” were my favorites. Some songs consisted of very long instrumental droning parts. Didn’t like that too much, even though I - again - appreciate the influence these pieces of music had. In total, it’s a narrow 2 stars, even though I could have comfortably given 3 as well. Looking forward to listening to some more Krautrock. 2/5 stars.
I suspect this is an album which will do different things to different people’s brains. For me, it’s more of a sample tape showing off the textures, arrangements, production and transitions this group are capable of with Faust rarely organising themselves into “a song.” This is obviously completely missing the point of what the band are trying to do. They want a feel of organised chaos though I’d prefer it if it sounded a little more improvised and organic. Due to these personal tastes Jennifer and Lauft… are the obvious highlights to me.
This is the kind of record that makes you question your life choices. This thing tested my patience. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions Jennifer Piano Piece
yea that sucked....moments where you think, hey this part is actually pretty good, which they immediately subvert by playing random out of tune notes or irritating sounds like a digital frog....
If this is what happens to music when you lose a world war, they make a very strong argument for peace!
Proof that the German belief in a supreme race is laughable.
Краут залупа
I did like the fuzzy, sorta dirty guitar sound!
Interesting. Not my style. Reminds me of a German Frank Zappa kind of vibe
Not really, no
This was both a new genre and new artist to me. Interesting, but I don’t think it’ll be one I’ll return to.
The few elements of this that I did like were way too few and far between. If "Jennifer" was half the length, it would be a little slice of perfection... but it isn't.
Not for me
I like Krautrock as a genre just fine, some of it is more interesting than the rest. This particular one ….well, “it’s a bit of a pain”(for me).
I don't really know what to say about this one. It is an album that I listened to today. I will not listen to it again. 2.5/5. That review is about as fulfilling as the album.
Not a Krautrock fan
I like a good deal of krautrock, but not this.
God damn ambient hippies
At some point a collection of sounds does not make a good music. This album is so random im unsure why it’s in the list.
