I've only gotten into Kraut rock in the last few years. I really dig it. The motorik beats and the droning is something that appeals to me. Faust is excellent.

I love how timeless this feels, it swings between noodling to almost delving into pop ballads and seems wholly comfortable with itself. Foreshadows alot like Radio Head and Ledgendary Pink Dots yet feels outside of genre. Its a great album.
Delicious! Just weird and noisy enough, lovely passages, funny, German, real fuck you we're having fun energy. I’ll listen again and it may well be a five. This is a true find, totally unknown to me before today. Why I tried this whole project. Krautrock!
Heard before: no It was always fun to make fun of the hipsters listening to the Krautrock, so I never looked beyond little Kraftwerk, a little Can… that was plenty. This is my first Faust, and I guess fans of this record like it for the poppiness. But those tracks, while kind of fun in their post-VU way, pale next to the great long droney instrumentals, with odd sections spliced together. Total groovy chaos with a splash of self-aware humor, just like the band itself from what i can tell. Excited to learn more. I’ll have to find a different reason to mock the hipsters. Sigh. I hear how bands like Stereolab and Spacemen3 have used similar drone sounds. It’s good that Faust actually played songs and convention music amongst the noise art. Still not a very enjoyable album though, but not absolutely terrible.
Like the album says, this is the fourth studio album. Woohoo! It's really all over the place, however... weird.
Kind of interesting in the way i'm okay being challenged, though the more lyrics in the music, the more quirky it gets... which isn't always a fit. Enough interesting things here to give it some credit, though I don't expect i'll end up revisiting this.

Not much spoke to me here, although it is nice to have some more context to the Krautrock-inspired tracks from David Bowie. However, this feels significantly less artful than those songs. Cacophony is not the right word for this sound, but it is a collection of sounds that are hardly connected at all to me.
Unusually this got better as it went on, still nothing amazing
I know I was talking about warming up to Kraftwerk somewhat recently but this album has completely soured me on krautrock for a while. The sparse vocals sounded like they were recorded with the mic outside the recording booth and the rest of it was just really boring. It's not good enough to be ambient music and it's not interesting enough to listen to fully engaged. It doesn't deserve a one but it does deserve to be immediately forgotten about by me within an hour.

I guess I completely misunderstood Krautrock. I was imagining leather jackets and shouting but I was way off. Funky, jazzy, experimental electro. It doesn’t always “land” with me, but at least there’s always something interesting going on.
Tried to listen a couple of times but never got all the way through the album. Really enjoyed the first track but subsequent tracks weren’t as good. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and go 3*
One of the best things about this is when you get an album you've never heard by a band, you've never heard so there are no pre-conceptions. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this offering.

Krautrock...something I soooo wish I enjoyed more than I do. I feel like it would open up a whole slew to clever & cool bands that I could spend years exploring. Instead it typically falls flat like this one did. 2/5
it’s fine. cool moments. the first song is pretty vibey but i guess you have to be in a mood for it. it’s not an album that warrants a repeat listen cuz honestly they have better albums, like Just Us. this album most feels like drugs were involved or something idk.

So confusing. My thoughts on it ranged from 'wow this is pretty cool' to 'wow wtf is this?' That's probably the point, though. Music sure would be boring if everything had sensible rhythm and melodies, I guess? Admittedly, I kind of liked some parts of it. A little bit. Standout tracks (well, maybe specific parts of the track) are Jennifer and Just a Second.

I really *want* to like this. Weird/trippy is a draw for me in theory but give me something like Gong (which "Giggy Smile" definitely has more than a passing resemblance to...); songs that go somewhere, even if meandering into weird or seemingly aimless directions, ones that come back to any type of theme. I realize much or even most of my critique of this album is based off the opening track "Krautrock" which is plodding and even 4 minutes into it how can I not feel like: "get ON with it already." It was such a horrible decision putting this as the lead track ... for the love of Udo Dirkschneider - why?? Even just stick it at the end of side 1 (records!) as a weird interlude but with this as the first song (and "song" is not right, it's a 2 note progression over and over for 12 minutes) ... eh, parts of it are kind of cool but it just leaves a cynical taste in me for the rest of it. It's a weekend album so I was able to give it a few more spins through and am not sure if that did anything for me. Could they not have put more weird into the rest of the "more normal" tracks and added a little groove or mystery to the odd ones? Idk, it's asking a band to change their style so I guess I'll chalk it up to not liking it, with the notable exception of the aforementioned goofy "Giggy Smile." Regretful pass. 4/10 2 stars
I'm always excited to get a kraut rock band on here, since that generally means I'm in for something cool and different. I've listened to Faust before and didn't get much out of it, but I really liked this album. Solid grooves throughout as I've come to expect from kraut rock, with great instrumentals over it. I generally don't find their vocals all that impressive, but they tend to be sparse anyway. Overall, it's an album that feels really advanced for the time when it came out. Well worth the listen 4/5

Faust is great, very well done Krautrock. I still prefer Nue but there's enough going on here to really make this stand out amongst the broader movement

This is one of those “it was really innovative and influential at the time” albums. I enjoyed parts of it but it doesn’t hold up as well as other krautrock stuff like Neu and Can. I won’t be listening again.
I love this kind of whacky album so much. While "Krautrock" is obviously the centerpiece of the album, the other songs show a playful experimental side that sounds like a mix between Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Throbbing Gristle. Jennifer is avant-garde without being too dense and Picnic on a Frozen River shows the band in psych rock mode, probably the most conventionnal you'll ever get from them. So yeah, there's a bit of everything and every bits are highly enjoyable.
Takes away my soul just like Mephisto would.
Very happy to return to this Faust album that I had only listened to once, a very long time ago. It's definitely an important work in the krautrock genre. Very adventurous and free music, which is something that I respect a lot.
Didn't enjoy this one, which is disappointing as the last krautrock album (NEU) was great. This was just a bunch of noise. The best of the bunch was 'The Sad Skinhead', as it was a bit more 'normal'/palatable in style.
Krautrock should be more spicy. This kinda just kept going in Ernest.

I really liked this one - I guess I generally like Krautrock? Will definitely re-listen soon. While some songs are repetitive (a key factor of the style), I was really taken with the sounds on some tracks, like "Jennifer" and "Giggy Smile".
If I’m forced to listen to German fusion, then this is the album I can tolerate most. They had just the right amount of experimental to make it exciting while also keeping it enjoyable. Unfortunately, the most enjoyable Faust songs are still semi-annoying. It’s as if each song is missing something integral to it being great, whether that’s lyrics, rhythm, justifiable runtime, too much experimenting, etc. It’s very strong in both directions, so I give it an average score, but it is by no means a “meh” album. 3/5

Having been lured in to purchase the Faust Tapes which turned out to be so weird it put me off checking out their other albums. Quite the opposite of what virgin had intended with their offer. As with a number of bands Faust popped up on John Peel a few times with the offering there much more palatable. This album still has the weird multilingual stuff on it and encouragingly many of the songs have structure. Each side is well balanced giving the album a positive feel throughout.
Kinda weird boring under-the-radar psych
Interesting. I'm glad I heard it. It's not an incredibly appealing genre, IMO, unless maybe you're very autistic -- it's a little too mechanical, though I didn't hate it; I'd rather listen to it that most modern pop, modern "country" or modern R&B. For novelty and historic purposes, I'll give it 3 stars.

It’s trippy, it’s funky, it’s experimental, it’s German baby! The way you decide to listen to this album is going to make all the difference. You can listen to it passively while doing chores and whatnot or with full attention to fully soak in the sounds being conducted here. I did both. Do the latter.
Moments of experimental excitement are ultimately too few and far between in this over-fermented work of krautrock.

Good music to code by. Another group I'm not familiar with at all. If I had to guess the release year after listening to it, I would have guessed mid to late 70s, so it's probably another example of an album being on the list because it influenced so many others in the genre.

I very much enjoyed this. Its a weird type of prog rock (Krautrock apparently) which I found was quite to my liking.
Kind of a unique bridge between Krautrock and more widely listened to genres like jazz. Ambient, meditative, but occasionally catches a good groove. Call it a 3.5. Favorite tracks: "Giggy Smile", "Run"
I really don't appreciate it when it feels like I'm being hazed by an album's first track. I shouldn't have to suffer through 12 minutes of garbage noise for the dubious honor of listening to the rest of your album. And yet, here we are. Back in the vinyl days, you could get away with this nonsense more easily because listeners couldn't just hit skip to get past it. They were captive to some degree. But that just makes it more egregious that a band would force this on their listeners. Why not lead off with something that hooks people? Something like "Giggy Smile" that actually shows off your talent? Something that makes them WANT to stop and listen? Not that the rest of the album is great but it's not 12 minutes of noise. Every other song is more engaging than that first track. Sure, the mixing is really rough with WAY too much of the mix hard-panned left and right, making for a really unbalanced listening experience that's frankly headache-inducing over headphones. But, even with the very serious mixing issues, those tracks are STILL better than that garbage first track. Why do that to people? It's not helping you out.

Albums like this are why I decided to listen to the 1001 Albums project. I wouldn't have found this on my own, but I'm glad I did. It was weird, forward-thinking, and constantly entertaining. I can imagine artists like Talking Heads, Brian Eno, and Devo listening to this incessantly.

Really enjoyed this. Jennifer was the only song I knew and was glad to be reminded it existed. Think Kraut rock might be my new thing. In this case it was the combo of it being both good ambient and post-punk rocker style stuff in close proximity.
When did this come out? Refreshing as hell compared to the other stuff coming out at the time. It's A Bit of Pain is beautiful but I'm not sure they needed that Dalek on backing vocals.

Well… that was a surprise. Given I’ve never heard of these and the lack of playtime on the old Spotify, I feared for the worst. I was pleasantly surprised by how experimental yet enjoyable this was. The instrumentals reminded me of The Doors, not just on acid but on PCP and mescaline as well. Hats off to zee Germans
Makes me think of the ending to that series, Heimat. The village of old loses its charm to modernist architecture, there are those Vietnamese kids, and the bastard son gets money from his clueless adoptive father to make shit electronic music

Pretty left field choice here. Sine waves and early synth sounds were interesting. I would have enjoyed it far more without the singing.
The opening track tests your patience slightly but after that there’s some great stuff on here. The Sad Skinhead and Picnic on a Frozen River… are both very catchy, and it’s abundant with the tight grooves that krautrock is renowned for even if the music over the top is a bit more chaotic

An interesting krautrock album that runs the gamut from ambient to industrial, showcasing some exceptional guitar tones and musicianship throughout. Not sure this one wholly gels as an experience for me given how some songs just don't fit with the longer, nigh-orchestral tracks and their flow, but an engaging and novel listen nonetheless.

Weird and bad; not really music
The opening track sounds like hearing an open mic at the Irish Club through the wall, 11 min of quarter note bass fifths. Overall, interesting but not enjoyable. I don't think I'll ever enjoy Krautrock, but I guess I'll keep on trying.

I almost wrote this off completely at first. "Krautrock" really drags and not much happens in its almost 12-minute run time. Past that track, there is some cool stuff, though.
Repetitive, but in a good way. Takes its time fleshing an interesting musical pattern and then goes balls-deep into another musical realm. Soothing albeit boring vocals which compliment the main ideas. Fairly experimental in use of electronic synths. Definitely a unique sound!
Faust IV is fine, but I think Faust Five is the best in the Faust and the Furious franchise.
A little more low key than I would have liked out of Krautrock, but still quite enjoyable.

Krautrock... this album starts off with a vaguely boring long track that feels like it might get interesting any moment now, but just doesn’t get there. My first thought was this was just some early electronica until I read the blurb. A lot of the songs start well imo but devolve into discordant notes and chaos (but not in a cool way). Still by the end of it I'm curious about if maybe there's bands that do it better? or maybe I just start skipping songs when they get messy... Saved tracks: The Sad Skinhead, Just A Second (Starts Like That!) /Picnic On A Frozen River/Deuxieme Tableaux, Giggy Smile
Wow this caught me so off guard in a good way—it’s noisy, hypnotic, dark, with these crazy good doom-laden melodies… I liked the classic rocky songs less but that is okay. At times this album just sounds so ahead of its time and probably influenced a lot of the sad, doomy, dark post-rock and metal I love. will definitely be returning to this 🥵❤️

A unique experience. Some of the songs are avant garde noise, while others are catchy poppy tunes. Jennifer and Giggy Smile really stuck out to me. I love the Craut!

It's funny that some of the records with the most rich sense of humour come from the stereotypically stoic country of Germany. While it's a serious record in many ways, there is a lot of self-awareness through it's runtime, and in a good way. The songs are also long, but well paced and with purpose, and the blend of languages is beautiful, making it a very European album - a kind of forward-looking earnestness that came with Central Europe in the 70s. I had never gotten into this band before, but this is a good album to discover them with.
LOL at some fans apparently labelling this a "sell-out" album. Could be true for all I know, but it's still one of the least mainstream sounding records on this list. I *think* I like krautrock based on what little I've heard before but honestly this has left me none the wiser about what krautrock actually is. Surely there are about 8 different genres on here...? Consider me suitably beguiled though.

Did not expect to, but loved this. A real variety of music, from the pomp of the long opening track, to the softer cuts on Side Two. A real surprise.
I love me a bit of noisy krautrock, and this does exactly what it says on the tin. Opening track 'Krautrock' (that's a hint, perhaps) is 12 minutes of motorik, one-chord drone-rock (in a good way). The rums don't even come in until 7 minutes in. The shorter songs are indeed more song-like, and stand up as great songs, which can be a surprise for some krautrock bands, who can stretch out of groove, but not really write a song. Really enjoyed this, and putting it on my want list to purchase. Going four stars instead of five, as this is a really great example of this genre, but not necessarily for everyone.

Clearly way ahead of it's time and was probably an inspiration for other artists I've listened to. That being said, sounded sloppy, unfocused and a bit "jammy", there's stuff here I don't think should have made the cut.

“Krautrock” is a stunning opener. Noisy (but beautiful) soundscapes that gradually shift and change over the course of nearly 12 minutes. There’s a steady pulse maintained throughout which gives the piece focus. I found it mesmerizing. “Giggy Smile” is a standout as well. The track begins with some playful psychedelic pop before shifting into a free jazz sax solo. Then it morphs into an epic jam that straddles the line between psychedelia and noise rock. There are a lot of overlapping layers in this last stretch but the music still feels playful even as it gets experimental. Incredible! Those two tracks feel like the major achievements here. The album is rounded out by a mix of experimental pop and rock and overall reminded me of The Velvet Underground at their most avant-garde. I’m very interested to hear more Faust.
Love the blank sheet music album cover. I liked the energy of the first song - it felt like a continuous building of excitement. Loved the full drumset entrance at 7:00 minutes. Really transformed the song. Big fan of the xylophone in "The Sad Skinhead". Also didn't expect vocals- I wasn't sure if this was an instrumental only group. Overall I thought it was OK. 3/3

Sounds like other albums we've listened to before. Avant-garde just to be different, no real musical direction. No style. Couldn't pick this band out in the crowd.

I've heard this like 3 times now and I just think it's worse Can. The generator is just teasing me. I know Tago Mago is on the list - I haven't given a 5/5 in a long time! Give me Can so I can listen to the superior hour-long album of German people summoning demons and speaking in fart sound effects. Germany's got some of the coolest music ever, man. When you think "American music" you think of your typical yeehaws and Alabamas. When you think "British music" you think of the Beatles. When you think "German music" you think you're going to need an exorcist. My point here is that more American bands should put dead fetuses on their album covers.
I appreciate the influence this album has on so many bands I love but I found it a bit to proggy for my tastes. Still giving it for stars for the songs that made an impact on me, namely the opening track, Krautrock
This was weird and boring and irritating.
This feels like something I would normally eschew, but I guess I'm in a good mood today. Still not particularly noteworthy, but it was pleasant enough. Best track: Läuft...Heißt Das Es Läuft Oder Es Kommt Bald...Läuft

Krautrock ya. Bloody all over the place in a good way. Giggy Smile was especially great, especially the way it stops dead into the next track - the talking actually scared the shit out of me. Some pretty out there sounds all over it.
I had no clue that I would be nodding along to 14 minute Krautrock tracks, thinking “Yeah, this would totally work for my morning run.”
I was pretty surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. Krautrock is a genre I have never actually heard of, let alone listened to. The production is somewhat lo-fi but also very listenable. The instrumentation is drone like and hypnotising. The vocals are purposefully rough, which is a good thing for the purpose of this album, give the album its unique vibe. It is a really good album, I will be listening to it again for sure. FAVORITE SONGS: - Giggy Smile - Jennifer - Lauft...Heisst Das Lauft Oder Es Kommit Bald..Lauft (that was a mission to type out) - It's A But Of A Pain 4/5
Faust actually really liked the instrumental. All the synths and repetition in krautrock had a cool minimalism rock thing. Jennifer is such a weird tune- the wobbly bass. The weird rhythm In that piano. The awkward vocal actually kind of work on this one. Really can’t stand the vocals on the other tunes. It’s a bit of pain- omg that dissonance! Cool noisey guitar solo. 2.5? 3?
What a bizarre record. if they left out all the vocals I would give this a higher rating, but they’re so weird and bad it ruins the droney noise vibe, which actually could be kind of cool. I honestly thought I was going to have a worse time listening to this than I did. There are some cool noises and I kind of liked the piano piece. 1.7

A phenomenal album, an essential for any fan of prog rock, or even 1970's experimental sounds in general. This is like a mix of all types of musicians and genres, Gordon Lightfoot, early Krafwerk, and Frank Zappa all blended together with a little hint of magic mushrooms for good measure. Still holds up. 4.5/5

Wow, what a journey. Krautrock had me from the getgo, The Sad Skinhead gets stuck in your smashed up faces. Giggly Smile is as catchy as all get out. But Lauft.. is the track that stole my heart.
Not my favorite example of the genre, but fun enough, for sure! Fave track - "Krautrock", probably, as it was the most krautrocky. Also liked the mellowness of "Jennifer"....
If the whole album was like track 1, this would be a 5.

This was a really interesting album, it's like nothing I've ever heard before. The sound was very refreshing in that sense, but it's filled with a lot experimental sounds. Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much. Definitely worth the listen though!

Early Kraut with some Zappa influences, fun. But not brilliant.
Giggy Smile will haunt me in my nightmares. Other than that, I liked this album. Interesting from a musical standpoint, but mostly pleasing to the ears. Haven't really listened to this kind of music before. 3.5ish.

This album really drives home the point of the project. If I didn’t have to listen to the full album I would have turned it off after the first song. But listening to the full album changed my perspective. The instrumentation is really interesting. I don’t enjoy the lead singers voice very much on certain tracks as well.
That's an interesting, curious oddity of an album. I'd quite like to be 20 years younger and listen to it live in a sweaty club in Leeds while drinking cider.

I'm not familiar with Faust but the album cover is promising. The track list isn't though, but that's ok. Diving in right away I think this is the kind of thing I'm inclined to like. 11 min in I'm not so sure. The Sad Skinhead immediately rewards my patience and from there it's a wild, uneven ride. Parts of Picnic On A Frozen River were a complete delight as the song wore on (and on). On balance more to like than dislike. 3.5 stars but rounding down for the length of the opening track.

there were a couple of points where i was just about to really enjoy this album and then it took another unexpected turn. still i think the madness of it made it quite enjoyable.

Starts good and then it doesn’t get any better but worst
The first song being purely instrumental, I did enjoy it. The following two songs the vocals are just awful and detract from the music. I had to skip Just a Second as it was grating on my nerves. I like Giggy Smile/Picnic on a Frozen River. (at least the 2nd half of it). So I do enjoy the instrumental songs even if they get a bit weird. Tough to rate this one. It's a Bit of Pain has some really jarring and annoying sounds.

After "Neu! '75" another classic German experimental rock album from the early 70s on the list - this is my favourite Faust album - it is experimental but also very accessible and listenable at the same time (i would have been quite a bit surprised if it had not been included in the list).
Sounds okay, but doesn't really grip me. Too repetitive in some songs and all over the place in others. I think I prefer what NEU! and CAN are doing in this genre.
It seems to be the album that modern arthouse rock albums are based off of. And it is considerably better than its imitators

Most pieces are in the mold of guitar-ambient, executed by Krautrock experts. Touches of the rural and the weird and plain old songwriting keep things fresh. Not many words here, but plenty of material to sit with.

Wow!! Belle découverte pour moi! Je comprends mieux d'où viennent Suuns (étant le seul band que je connais qu'on ai affublé du therme krautrock) je vais investiguer la discographie sans faute! J'ai trouvé ça définitivement pas plate, réalisation stimulante, quelques sons un peu strident qui passe moins bien au souper mais j'ai bien aimé le voyage!
Beau laboratoire ! Incomplet sur Spotify, mais tout de même vraiment intéressant. À part quelques pièces, ça ne sonne pas du tout comme 1973.
Côté sonorités et explorations c'est intéressant. Pas un album de tous les moments par contre et faut être dans le mood, mais à revisiter.

There are moments in and amongst the eclectic variety of jams, but it's a bit too scatter shot for me to really get into. It's too bad because the first track ('Krautrock') really worked for me, so I was stoked to see where it was heading. By the time I got to 'Lauft', I was lost.
