Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Apart from Waterloo Sunset and David Watts (thanks to the Jam's cover) I found this very mid 60s and a bit lame without the rock edge of earlier Links.

I used to like this, now it just sounds dated.

The Kinks are a great band with unique hits full of character and lyrical talent. I expected to discover more here. The recording sounds dated. It has a few stand out tracks but that is it. Cover art: 2.5/5 odd one this. Psychedelic Victorian. At least they made some effort.

This album was not what I expected. The kinks are not a bad band but this album was just lacking. It had none of their 'classics' on it and just didn't have their overall style. BIt disappointed...

I really don't want to listen to this. I'm really sick of this stuff. I'm over the late 1960s. Do you hear me?!?! Done with em!! Listened anyway, was exactly as expected. The one song the other reviews said was amazing was average at best. 2/5.

This one will have to grow on me

Not for me idk to clanky

Death of a clown sounds like a Dylan cover. It’s ok

The Kinks c'est overrated. Album de rock très standard même pour l'époque.

This is a good, "small sound" album. It sounds minimalist and unproduced. Waterloo Sunset was in Rushmore, and I do really like that song. The Kinks are reminiscent of the silly side of The Who or The Beatles. I know there are pure, all-in fans for The Kinks, and I regret I am not one of them, but I enjoy them.

It's just nothing special. There seem to be a lot of these from the 60s/70s on this list where they kind of go in one ear and out the other with no impact.

just could not get into.

I was excited to see this album come up, the first one from the 60s (probably my favorite decade of music) for my set, as I really like some Kinks songs...but they aren't on this album. Another reason I should have liked Something Else more is that I quite like chamber pop as a genre (ex: Vampire Weekend). But I've given every other album so far a second listen, so I'm doing that for this one too, and I'm already liking it better. One general note: I quite enjoy most of the instrumentation of this album; it's more lyrics and vocal quality that don't resonate with me. I wish it was instrumental like my previous assignment, \"Head Hunters\". \"David Watts\"- Catchy and short. The opening beat reminds me of the Rolling Stones' \"Let's Spend the Night Together\", one of my favorite songs by that band. +1. \"Death of a Clown\"- It's okay, but I have a low tolerance for anything negative, so the \"death\" aspect lowers it for me. =0 \"Two Sisters\"- I wouldn't say I \"like\" this song, but I think it's important to analyze the different experiences of women, especially in the midcentury, so I appreciate it for that. +0.5 \"No Return\"- This song was fine and I could hear the mid-60s bossa nova influence. +0.5 \"Harry Rag\"- Repetitive and not really for me. -0.5 \"Tin Soldier Man\"- This one will cause me to repeat: Repetitive and not really for me. -0.5 \"Situation Vacant\"- Music +2, bummer lyrics -1. Net +1. \"Love Me Til the Sun Shines\"- I realize I'm once again comparing The Kinks to other bands, but: I like this song, and yet I think it sounds like (and would be better performed by) The Who. +1.5 \"Lazy Old Sun\"- I hated this song on first listen, and on second listen I hate it a little less. -1 \"Afternoon Tea\"- This may be my favorite on the album, but I'm a sucker for \"ba-ba-ba\" songs. +1.5 \"Funny Face\"- This one's another music +2, lyrics -1, for a net for 1. \"End of the Season\"- I strongly disliked this song on first listen, and I still do. -1.5 \"Waterloo Sunset\"- This is a nice song and absolutely the most famous from the album. I'm biased slightly against it because it makes me think of a guy that's in and out of my life, but I know it's a good one. Also, it sounds like The Guess Who borrowed the opening from this for \"Hand Me Down World\". +1.5 5 (points, not stars). Least Favorite Songs: Lazy Old Sun, End of the Season Favorite Songs: Afternoon Tea, Waterloo Sunset And just so these are somewhere, because I might do this for subsequent albums: Hotel California Least Favorite: Try and Love Again Hotel California Favorite: The Last Resort Head Hunters Least Favorite: Watermelon Man Head Hunters Favorite: Chameleon

No bad, not exciting.

There's some cool innovation on this album, with lots of out-there noises and production decisions. The problem is, I found most of them really unappealing

The raw rock style suits them better. The cover version of David Watts by The Jam is better. In short: could be better.

This album has a lot of ups and downs. I find there are some great songs followed by some real flops. I doubt I’ll ever listen to the full album again but could see listening to some songs. Highlights: death of a clown and tin soldier man.

I dug "Death of a Clown" and a few other tracks, however I'm unlikely to revisit the album in its entirety. A couple neat mid-album drum fills caught my attention, but the record really dragged at times ⭐⭐

Sounded like a drunken mess. Songs that stood out were David Watts and Death of a Clown. Waterloo Sunset I've heard before and is a good song. Other than that, It was a cross off the list. 1000 to go...

Waterloo sunset is one of the greatest songs of all time but the album as a whole is pretty hit or miss. Apparently this was due to a split between the popularity of EPs in Britain and LPs in America leading to an incoherent album but all the slow songs on here are weak while the more upbeat ones are at the very least ok to good. Harry rag is a pretty bad song, sickeningly British.

Not their best stuff

Harry Rag was alright. Lazy Old Sun was terrible. I think I've heard Waterloo Sunset, it's alright. Overall not too fond of this one.

2old4me

Fun and quirky. But not many songs stand out to me. Hard to feel the impact of an album so before my time.

Whilst the songs are all likeable, nostalgic little vignettes, the sound is mosty thin and reedy, lacking punch. with the obvious exception of Waterloo Sunset. As an example, compare the Kinks against the Jam's version of David Watts. I love all the Kinks singles right up to Come Dancing, but the album tracks don't enthuse me. Some of them would make great short stories, though.

Annoying hooks and instrumentation that gets an extra star because the good songs are good but most of it was like nails on a chalkboard for me.

Un disco que me recordó algo a los clásicos de The Beatles, pero le falta algo en su melodía para ser "más gustoso" (no sabría como definirlo). Nota: 2.5

As much as I loved songs like Two Sisters, No Return, and Act Nice.. I also loathed Harry Rag and Mr Pleasant.

Not a fan...... 9 yrs old when this album came out.....

Not horrible by any means, but I didn't really like many of the songs, and even actively disliked a few of them to the point I had to skip them. A low 2, less enjoyable than their other album

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: David Watts, Waterloo Sunset Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: There was so much hype on the internet for this album for some reason. I didn't see it. The amount of times I saw "How do I even talk about Waterloo Sunset; it's a perfect song"...??? Yeah it's great but come on. I'm sure I'm missing something with this album, but I listened at least 3 times and my opinion didn't really change from the first to the third. Meh.

I'd listen to Harry Rag on my own maybe. Tin Soldier Man hurts. Lazy Old Sun is decent but why not just pick Strawberry Fields Forever? Somehow every song is too long and repetitive at like 2:30. If this band is kinks every one of them is like "sometimes I open my eyes during sex." With halves I'd pick 1.5

Ihan ok. Nyt oli vika enemmän kuuntelijassa ei jaksanut keskittyä menevän ykkösbiisin (David Watts) jälkeen.

60s sound

It's okay but most of the time I just sort of thought that I could be listening to The Beatles instead.

This album didn’t seem like much to write home about. Nothing that struck me as being outstanding. There have been many comparisons to the Beatles and I just think the Beatles did it way better

Not my cup of tea.

"Bunch of rubbish!"

Didn’t really like this cd.

Just a little hard to get into. Can tell it was something in the era but it didn’t age well for me.

It’s hard to deny the Beatles comparisons but it lacked all heart.

I like the kinks, but this album was pretty meh. Nothing special about it.

A bit daft, overly naïve, and overly "English". Most of the songs do very little for me, partly because they are so much of their time. "Two Sisters" is nice, but the message of it is reductive and a little misogynistic. "Situation Vacant" sounds pretty cool.

Onhan Waterloo Sunset ja pari muutakin biisiä levyllä ihan kovia, mutta epätasaisuus vaivaa taas vaihteeksi. Ei tätä levyä kokonaisuudessaan jaksa moneen kertaan keskittyneesti kuunnella.

No well known songs by the kinks. Had some bizzare songs like two sisters, but nothing that caught my ear.

3 songs in and they just seem like the doors but happier its actually annoyinggggg. listen to the doors fuck the kinks

I don't know what I thought the Kinks sounded like before I listened to this album, but the only word that comes to mind is insipid. Did not care for this, do not need to hear it again.

FOURTH album be The Kinks. While their music is ok, not sure why they are valued that much. They sound very much like many groups of the time but no song sticks out much.

Extremely English, Extremely annoying, forced whimsy, the sound of taking mushrooms mistakenly thinking nursery rhymes and folk guitars and the renaissance and ripping off the Beatles worst tendencies makes a good combination. Tiresome. 1966-69 is so overrepresented it's a chore.

fake ass beatles fucking kill yourself.

They sound exactly how they look ... Old. Honestly not my kind of thing 😔

Busy, color-saturated arrangements built from jangly guitars, fussy harpsichord flourishes, brass accents, and arch, overly expressive vocals move this psychedelic pop album like being trapped in a cluttered curiosity shop with the lights turned up too bright—whimsical in theory, but from start to end so insistently psychedelic and mannered that it becomes downright annoying rather than enchanting.

Incredibly bland and unoriginal

los birols

Boring

Another rip-off Beatles sound which is the one of the worst I've heard. Again, too many albums not on here that should obviously be ahead of ones like this.

A jumbled mess of styles and most of them rubbish. Was that a sea shanty, and a bossa nova beat amongst all the poor imitation of The Beatles?

idk I didn't like, like not even one song. I dont even remember listening to it, literally passed me by, im probably missing something dont know what...

I like the Kinks. I do not like this album.

Really didn’t like it. Sounded like a collection of Beatles songs that weren’t quite good enough to be on any Beatles albums; Waterloo Sunset being the exception. So far this album generator feels a lot like a boomer driven experience.

Some songs just annoyed me, and others were so boring it made me want to kill myself so no thanks guys that Arthur album was better

I will I was dead

Something Else By The Kinks starts off pretty good. I enjoyed the first track David Watts. After that, it really lost my interest. In fact, I found the rest of the album to be rubbish. Music…Rubbish. Vocals….Rubbish. Lyrics…Rubbish. Alright, Waterloo Sunset is a decent song. Something Else By The Kinks is considered a classic British pop album? Sorry, don’t see it. Very forgettable. I like other music by The Kinks but this album gets a 1 rating. 1/5

Something shite. Even Waterloo Suset suffers in the context of the 12 pieces of nonsense that precedes it. The first extra track on the remaster sounded the best of the lot, but I'm not volunteering another 21 minutes beyond the og release.

A lot of this album made me uncomfortable. I can't put my finger on it, but I found the music unsettling.

Like a budget version of The Beatles. Some songs were just comically bad, especially Harry Rag. Two Sisters wasn't bad though.

yeah no i just couldnt get through it sorry

Ne recuso a ouvir

A dated Beatle clone and a bit crap. Without Waterloo Sunset this would be quite dire. In fact I'm starting to doubt if WS is actually any good. More disappointment. I would have expected better from The Kinks. The only 1001 lists this should be on is things in the bin.

1. david - 1 2. clouun - 1 3. zizterz - 1.5 4. return - 1.5 5. harry - 0 6. zoldier - 1 7. vacant - 1.5 8. love - 1 9. zun - 1.5 10. tea - 1.5 11. funny - 1 12. zeazon - 1 13. zunzet - 1 14. nice - 1 15. autumn - 1.5 16. alive - 1 17. uuonder - 0 18. polly - 1 19. lincoln - 1 20. love - 1

It's all just pretty middling stuff. Waterloo Sunset is a tune though. Very good song. Shame it's on this album.

Thankfully this was under 36 minutes. Very boring.

It's like someone found a tape in the loft of Paul McCartney songs he didn't rate enough to bring in to the Beatles. Waterloo Sunset is decent. David Watts is quite good but shows what a limited band. It should have some punch to it, but the band lacks any edge whatsoever. The Davies brothers were meant to argue all the time. It would have been nice to hear that come through on this one. The rest are pointless.

I don't like The Kinks.

The Kinks have some great songs; You Really Got Me, Lola, Destroyer. However NONE of them are on this bland AF album. Hippy dippy bologna.

Oh wow more shit

Hot garbage

Waterloo Sunset is decent. Happy go lucky album.

Wasn’t feeling this one

This album was “Something Else” that’s for sure. I’m not sure what to make of it. There were some songs that were just awful like ”Lazy Old Sun”, and “End of the Season”. Sometimes, like on “Tin Soldier Man”, I felt like they were trying to be Sergeant Pepper‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Other songs like “Afternoon Tea” felt like they were trying to capture a mood ala Queen’s “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon” but this song was rejected by the band and the Kinks found it while rummaging through the trash. In any case, I did not enjoy this album at all and I’m not sure why it made the list.

A poor effort.

Pokémon-sounding-ass backing tracks. The epitome of horrendously untalented British boys trying to ride in the wake of The Beatles’ success. If this were the soundtrack to my life I think I would off myself. The only redeeming quality of the whole album was Waterloo Sunset, which they put at the end of the album to hopefully use as a palette cleanser. Sadly, no amount of “musical sorbet” can remove from my ears the disgusting refrains of the previous 12 songs. 1/5 stars without a single doubt in my mind.

Beatles

1/5. I can see the songwriting chops but this did not age very well. Not even the hit single off the album is worth listening to. Won’t put on again.

still a fun less overplayed beatles. edit: this album is terrible. 1 star? 2? its like they're stoned the whole album.

I listened to about half of it, got too busy.

Beetles feel to it

Not a big fan... not as creative as beatles.

Unpleasant

Sloan 1967. This does nothing for me at all.

No me gustó

Me ha parecido un disco ligero, sin mucho acomple a mis gustos.

not so good for me

Would be enjoyable after several listens. Just OK on first listen. "Harry Rag" is pretty great. 3/5
