Dålig tajming för Kinks. Extremt sugen på ännu ett pojkband från 60-talet och har därför svårt att kanske denna en ärlig chans. Eller?
Just not my style at all
Dull
The absolute wall of text that is included on this entry in the book is insane. Music taste is subjective, but when you put anything under a microscope you can justify whatever you want. I did not hear an album rife with themes of coping and loss, but that's what the critics are waxing poetic about.
I am giving up. This is just not it. In fact, it's putting me to sleep when I need to be awake.
zwei bekannte songs: Waterloo Sunset und Death Of A Clown .. ansonsten 60er-geschrammel.
1960's psychadelia which seems a bit dated. It's clearly from the time and was popular but it's not new and interesting now. The lyrics took a bit of research to understand too. I now know the background to David Watts and what a Harry Rag is.
It was decent. I saw one of their most popular songs was on this album, but I didn't recognize it and it didn't stick out when it played. No takeaways from me and I won't listen to it again. It didn't seem like anything special.
2.5 (36:17 13 tracks, 5th studio album, 1967) English rock band I did not like this album on the first two listens, grew on me in headphones. Was walking in a forest preserve listening to Afternoon Tea and met a woman (the only person I talked to that day) name Donna – that’s a weird coincidence. Still giving it a 2 as I don’t love the end of the 60’s psychedelia and chamber music stuff that was so popular in its day, but ALMOST a 3. I want to like The Kinks as there are some songs by them that are so good. . . just not this album. This album continues the Kinks' trend toward an eccentric baroque pop and music hall-influenced style defined by frontman Ray Davies' observational and introspective lyrics. The Kinks were brothers Ray Davies (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and younger Dave Davies (lead guitar, vocals), Pete Quaife (bass), and Mick Avory (drums, percussion). Lyrically Dave explores fame and deteriorating mental health (clow) while Ray explores isolation. The singles "Waterloo Sunset", one of the group's most acclaimed songs, and the Dave Davies solo record "Death of a Clown", both of which charted in the UK top 3. Something Else sold poorly and became the Kinks' lowest-charting album nonetheless the album was ranked No. 288 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Ray Davies assumed control over production after the departure of Shel Talmy; hence Something Else marked a change in the sound and production style of the Kinks. Davies felt unsure of his skill in mixing and recording the group's records, and later commented: "I feel that I shouldn't have been allowed to produce Something Else. What went into an album required someone whose approach was a little bit more mundane". Musically, Something Else features multiple different genres and stylistic influences, from the chamber pop of "Death of a Clown" to the bossa nova of "No Return". With the exception of the garage rock-style "Love Me Till the Sun Shines" the album was a departure from the hard-edged rock and roll of the group's earlier material, instead featuring mellower, acoustic baroque pop ballads, English music hall, and "tempered" R&B. Ray Davies' lyrics on the album deal with English-inspired subject matter, particularly the harpsichord-laden "Two Sisters" (a metaphor between the two brothers, Ray being an introvert and Dave an extrovert who like to go out and party), the lazy shuffle "End of the Season", and the sardonic "David Watts." The album includes three songs composed by Dave Davies, including the hit single "Death of a Clown". Favorite Song: Afternoon Tea All tracks are written by Ray Davies, except where noted. 1. "David Watts" – 2:40 2. "Death of a Clown" (R. Davies, Dave Davies) – 3:15 3. "Two Sisters" – 2:03 4. "No Return" – 2:03 5. "Harry Rag" – 2:19 6. "Tin Soldier Man" – 2:53 7. "Situation Vacant" – 2:43 8. "Love Me Till the Sun Shines" (D. Davies) – 3:23 9. "Lazy Old Sun" – 2:49 10. "Afternoon Tea" – 3:25 11. "Funny Face" (D. Davies) – 2:29 12. "End of the Season" – 3:00 13. "Waterloo Sunset" – 3:16
🤔
this is kinda cute! but yeah idk i can't remember much but i didn't hate it!
Ehh. It was decent. Definitely got the beatles inspiration but overall it wasnt that good of an album. 2.5/5
2/5
- I was really looking forward to this because I thought I would really like it because I like a lot of the Kinks'(s?) songs, but it kind of bored me. I wasn't taken in by most of the songs... the melodies and instrumentation felt too simple/old-time cutesy and didn't hook me enough. - I liked Two Sisters, with its harpsichord and unique song subject matter. Some fun lyrics throughout the album. I also like Waterloo Sunset - catchy and wistful. - The singers' voices were forgettable. - The songs and album were both short, but everything still felt like it went on a bit too long. - I don't know... it's probably a 2.5 because I liked it more the more I listened to it, but I was still disappointed and won't reach for it again, so I'm rounding down.
I've never understood the kinks hype. Whenever some music subreddit posts "what are the most underrated bands?", the kinks are almost always there. Do you guys really like harry rag or tin soldier man? Every song here just feels like them vamping between two chords and then some of the dumbest lyrics. They do have some great songs though, I think Lola and Destroyer are great, but I think this is my 3rd kinks album now and none of them had any songs I've really enjoyed. High 2.
Toooooo long
Meh
191/1089 a fine album, i preferred it over Village Green. I’m just not really into 60s boyband pop i don’t have much to add because my issues aren’t really with the quality or impact etc i’m just not the target audience. of course i did recognise Waterloo Sunset though and that was a highlight along with Afternoon Tea my score feels really mean but it’s completely down to personal taste and feeling 24/100
Meh
If The Beatles and the Rolling Stones had a baby but then that baby grew up to be the outcast of the family
Nisam ni znala da je Waterloo Sunset njihova stvar 😯. To mi je onako, dobra stvar, ostalo s albuma mi nije nešto, dosta su mix velikana bez nekog posebnog pečata. 2/5, 4/10
I’m so depressed and I wish I was d**d. This album was fine it sounds like kids music but not in a bad way.
Never been a big fan of this band except for their hits. Would I listen to thus, ever, again? No. Was it horrible? No.
It sounds kinda like a dream. With hauntingly beautiful lyrics.
i can’t remember. listened 3 days ago and couldn’t tell you a single thing about it. i didn’t hate it clearly, so that’s an extra point
idk I just got bored. Not my fav
There are 4 kinks albums on this list... four!
60-luvullakin on kyllä tehty monenlaista musaa, tää on suoraan jostain 40-luvulta. Annetaan nyt kakkonen kuitenkin kun tuskin tarkoittivat mitään pahaa
Onpahan ankeeta menoa taas, ei tapahdu biiseissä mitään. Ei muuta kuin kakkoseen.
2.5
Another mind-boggling inclusion. No idea why this is on here. Village Green for sure, but Something Else...?
not their best, kind of annoying
This is an okay album, but I’ve really grown sick of the biases. Hoping for an album of non guitar based music from anyone but a group of white cis-male performers tomorrow!
Waterloo sunset was fun but the rest felt pretty forgettable
Wouldnt put any of these songs on optionally but not totally offensive to get a 1
Probably sounded better when released. Couple of good tracks but nostalgia rather than really enjoyed.
Very meh, Waterloo Sunset an absolute tune though - no denying that.
Would this album have made this list if they weren't the Kinks and/or from the UK? No.
It's... fine? Listening to it made me think I was listening to a Beatles cover band that was trying some original music.
Would rather listen to something else tbh
This is #day462 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here we are with something from the late '60s again, Something Else, to be precise. My second Kinks album in just a week, I think. I get the band's influence and all that, but alas, I find this music hard to care about. If I'm in the mood for the '60s, I'm more likely to throw on some Beatles from the same year or a few Woodstock artists. This is another 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day463.
Hi I’m a band in the 60’s and we’re gonna be so quirky to name ourselves “The (blank)” because wee LOVEEEE the Beatles but Theres a hole in the market because those “losers” have made more experimental music so we’re gonna make the same slop as they did just… 5 years later. I don’t really like this type of music it’s just at least with the Beatles that they are special cause they created this vibe, and these guys didnt.
Sounds like the Beatles, but worse.
Whimsical rubbish
I like the Kinks, I really do. Bu this? I don't think was one of their best efforts.
I feel like I should like the Kinks more than I do. There’s four of their albums on the 1001 albums list. This is the third one I’ve had, ‘Arthur…’ and ‘Face To Face’ being the other two so far. And just like those albums this one is hit and miss, probably more miss than hit to be honest. The Kinks just don’t resonate with me the way I hoped they would.
Some groovy, Beatles-esque tunes, but only one great one: Waterloo Sunset.
this is so much longer than it needs to be? idk i always really liked waterloo sunset and lola and so i assumed the kinks were good? this ain’t it tho.. they took all of mccartneys whimsy but none of his cleverness (while evoking his style in susannah‘s still alive)
Waterloo Sunset is an absolute classic but the rest not so much!
Pretty much the opposite of what luckynewman13 listened to. Did not enjoy this one at all; I think I’m not a fan of the 60s “Beatlemania” type music. I think it’s bland and unimaginative. There was one good song on here (Waterloo Sunset), and the rest sounded like they were either written by an 8th grader in the throes of a crush, or they raided the dumpster behind McCartney’s flat for the songs he threw out. Not a good listen. 2/5
Didn’t do anything for me
i wish this was something else by anyone else. tuneless and meandering. felt over an hour long even at a tight 35. boo!!!
i think of myself as someone who likes the kinks, but this album was a snoozefest of 60s britpop. this site links to the bonus track edition on spotify but after listening to all of it, waterloo sunset is really the only track here worth caring about in the slightest. such a bummer, since the kinks are definitely capable of writing catchy, captivating songs. favorites: death of a clown, harry rag, waterloo sunset
I like the Kinks. They are worthy of the list. However, this is not their best work.
its fine im just annoyed at how british it is
A little too silly for me.
This isn't bad. But it's not what I would consider good either. It's just sort of there. Somehow just this lifeless thing that wants to be weird.
Not terrible but I really don't like this British rock genre from this time period. Cheesy lyrics and tropes
Forgettable. 🤷♀️ Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.
Liked Waterloo Sunset. kind of knock off beatles other than that
It’s fine I guess. Plenty of other kinks I like better
I’ve seen dozens of iterations of these lists, and they always manage to place a different album by The Kinks on it. I don’t think this is a positive. They’re clearly a good band and have some type of branch on the Tree of Rock, but lacking a universally accepted watershed album is really a detriment, IMO. And honestly, if you snuck “Listen to the Flower People” into the mix of this album, I wouldn’t have noticed.
I saw the Beatles wearing army pants and flip flops so I went out and bought army pants and flip flops.
2/5
Ні, не моє.
Not a big fan
I feel like this is the kinks trying to be deep or more artsy idk. Didnt work for me compared to their other more traditional kink punk jams.
I truly do not understand this album. Clearly I'm missing something, but I didn't find any of this interesting.
Catchy but not something I would revisit
If you had played this for me and told me it was a joke or parody album The Kinks had made, I would have completely bought it. This is not version of The Kinks that I prefer. I recognize the voice, but that's about all.
Cuantos discos iguales van a meter? Me tiene cansado esto. Nota: 1.7
Didn’t do much for me. I did enjoy some of the guitar licks.
I just can’t stand 60s baroque pop
The kinks have a ton of great songs. None of them will be found on this album. I get that they were trying different things and it is different than normal but it just fell flat for me. Hopefully next Kinks album will have Sunny Afternoon, Lola, or even an 80's pop song like Come Dancing. Anything would be better than this.
..
Meh except for the couple of singles which stood out.
One of the worse Kinks albums. Still, not terrible. Fave Song: Autumn Almanac
It’s not bad but it’s not great, later half of the album was better. Did like “love me till the sun shines“ and “lazy old sun” even more so.
Beatles sounding rock. It was okay.
I don't know, 1st listen here and about 2/3rds through it.....boring and it sounds like one long song so far. Ill report back later!
I see a lot of reviews comparing the Kinks to the Beatles, but the difference is that the later had good songs on their albums.
The back half of this album is so much better than the front half. Goes from totally forgettable tracks to a really solid last 4 starting with "Afternoon Tea". So much of this album is forgettable unfortunately.
Waterloo sunset the obvious standout on what is a very challenging listen. Lyrically outstanding but tonally all over the place. Ray Davies has always been a singer you have to love or is a complete turn off. The latter for me.
Der er godt nok lagt fra den beskidte lyd på You Really Got Me Now og så til det her barok-pop. Jeg er ikke kæmpe fan af den her version af The Kinks.
This was a listenable but kind of forgettable bit of 60s pop rock. Honestly, the whole time I was listening I couldn'r help but feel like the band was trying to cash in on Beatlesmania, though I say this as someone who isn't super familiar with the band outside of their hits like You Really Got Me, Lola, or All of the Day and All of the Night.
It sounds like the kinks, I don’t really like the kinks
Jaunty and affable Brit rock. Doesn't seem that exciting to me, although I can imagine it was a bigger deal at the time.
I know the Kinks have better. You know the Kinks have better. We all know the Kinks have better. Which begs the question, how many Kinks albums are on this thing?
I *should* like the kinks. They are rough-and-ready proto-Britpop, with social commentary, quirky lyrics, raw sound and experimental phases. I like the fact that they exist! I enjoy reading about and seeing pictures of Ray Davies. However, when I'm listening to this album (with the exception of Waterloo Sunset) I am not really enjoying myself. I don't know why. I just don't think it's that nice. Sorry.
Every time I hear a kinks album it's never what I think it's going to be.
Just can’t seem to get into this band.
Waterloo Sunset is a great song, but the rest of this wasn't very memorable for me. I'm going with a 2
david watts hani nöd würkli checkt. wer ischer? es isch herzige pop i guess. death of a clown chli umpa umpa time. schint aber hässig z sii irgendwie. verstohni au null glaub? no return no nice bossa time. harry rag wieder bitz zu stampfig für mich. tin soldier man findi etz au ehner schyze situation vacant hani sehr cool gfunde gad s klavier und d orgle sind super. höh es hört uuf und fangt wieder aah? till the sun shines sehr es nüt irgendwie. ultra simplistisch. afternoon tea easy arsch?
Compared to the albums released in the same year, it's incredibly boring
Everything sounds the same. Would've been a 3 otherwise. 2/5
Eh. I wish I could say there was a standout hit, but I can't. They're solid musicians, but I was bored through it. 2/5
Zelfs The Kinks zelf hadden al door dat er teveel The Kinks was. De titel is er niet voor niets....Maar laten we eerlijk zijn. Heel anders is het niet...
Loved it, can’t wait to have this on at a bbq
4/10
Nah. I tried a 2nd listen and it was just kinda annoying.
Better than 90% of british music
Good
Beatles at home...at home
La comunidad gay debe adorar este ritmo delicado y suave para sus vestiditos rosa. Creo que tienen mejores propuestas, pero....bueno, se diversificaron hacia un publico " raro".
I thank god every day I didn't grow up in an era where this was elite Best Song: Death of a Clown Rating: 4.0/10 2 Stars
This is a bit of a dull album. I don't find The Kink's music hall stylings particularly engaging.
Harry Rag. Harry Rag. I'll do anything just to get a harry rag.
Obviously “Waterloo Sunset” is an incredible song but everything else on here is expendable and forgettable.
The Kinks were always an odd combination of goofy and badass. Unfortunately this record leans much harder towards goofy. “Love Me til the Sun Shines” and “Waterloo Sunset” are both great songs, even though Dave sings Sun Shines. I didn’t know “Afternoon Tea” coming in but that one was cool too. Other than that, not much here I’m looking forward to listening to again.
Very old sounding rock that seems very "of its time". Not really my tempo at all. The singing of the uniqueness is often something that cam make me appreciate older music but this didn't have anything that drew me in.
These dudes don’t hit bru
This album wasn't a hit at the time, and is completely perplexing for 1) becoming apparently a cult favorite after the fact, and 2) being included on this list. 1 or 2 songs are okay & give a Beatles-outtake feel (Death of a Clown, Two Sisters), but the sea shanty/music hall vibe worked better for 'Yellow Submarine' than anything here. I tried to appreciate the story-telling angle of the lyrics but most of it glossed over me - or maybe I'm just not British enough to understand. I got the misimpression from Wes Anderson I didn't appreciate the Kinks enough but maybe I appreciate them exactly as much as I should.
Another one I’d never heard and found a bit dull
This is got to be The Kinks’ most boring album. Village Green Preservation Society is such a better album. The mix of British Musichall and Rock did not work for me.
This is goofy shit
2,5
I just listened to a Hendrix album from the same year, 1967. It didn't help the Kinks.....their stuff sounded childish
Starts strong, ends strong - everything in between is dated and missable. Had Something Else at 4Ex, it did not get much play. (Now you know why.) The original album ended at Waterloo Sunset (fine, and also the best song on the album.) I did recognize a few “extras” on the Deluxe version. It gets a (2.45*s)
It's 1967 and The Kinks were clearly doing... Something Else, unfortunately that something else is not something good at all. The first cohesive lyric on the album describes the rest in its entirety: "I am a dull and simple lad, Cannot tell water from champagne." This album is the water in champagne, the boring, useless part, lacking fizz, taste, or delight. It's as if all the good parts went somewhere else (onto a Beatles album of course). I did not care for this at all and was mostly annoyed for 35 minutes. It's a hokey, low-budget ripoff that I nearly thought was a joke. Undeniably, The Kinks have some great songs but they are not on this album. Very missable but ends on Waterloo Sunset, it's only slight redemption so 1.65 is being generous.
Hate to say this to all the Kinks fans, but this album sounds like knock off Beatles. It's like the Davies bros did some dumpster diving on Abbey Road and grabbed all cheesy filler that didn't make the cut. Only tracks I liked were "Harry Rag" and "Situation Vacant." Skip any track with "Sun" in the title. Trying to have an openmindz here but can't endorse the must listen. Despite the shortcomings of the album, I will drink to the tragic deaths of many a rodeo clown tonight...1.77 stars.
Something Else is something else I guess. Death Of A Clown has always been a favorite of mine for some reason. Harry Rag was kinda fun but otherwise it's a pretty mediocre album. I echoed it in my prior review that The Kinks somehow manage to sound like they don't take anything seriously yet still manage to put together an OK album. I could swear The Kinks entire existence as a band is some kind of elaborate joke or bit taken too far when they realized they can actually have some success. 2.18 stars
Dull as Hull
2.5
Not their best.
Tamed, poppy version of the Kinks. Sweet, mostly uninteresting.
A kind of Beatles that didn't work out. The Kinks have good intentions, and I even understand the Beatles' influence on their sound, but, I don't know, it didn't impress me much or convince me. It's an album with potential.
Day363 - seemed longer than it was and was kind of a chore. the crazy thing is that this is definitely someone’s favorite album
Walmart Beatles. Outside of Waterloo Sunset there isn't really anything I enjoy about this.
Easily forgettable
Not really my style. Makes me think of the beatles, but without the familiarity.
This is sure enough kinks now, how many albums do you need to get the measure of them really. This was more of the same, slightly experimental pop rock in the vein of later Beatles. Waterloo sunset is okay and the only one I recognised. Otherwise more of the same. It's not terrible but I've had my fill, 2.5 but more like a 2.
Solid classic pop/rock tracks. The overall sound is nice, but I feel like they have good ideas that hang on a little too long and the more laid back tracks end up being a bit boring because of this. Maybe it's just because there's such a massive difference in the music of 1967 to today, 2024, that makes me feel this way. Almost like my attention span as of this very moment is struggling to listen to this sound and wanting changes or something exciting spark and it doesn't ever seem to come. "Waterloo Sunset" is a really nice song but if it's the high point in the album then I kind of feel like the ceiling is a bit lower than I would like. Overall while it's a nice record, it feels pretty middle of the road in the overwhelming presence of British classic rock representation on this list.
1.84
A forgettable Kinks album.
While I like some of the Kinks work, this one just didn't appeal to me at all.
Didn't love this and have liked the kinks before
Honestly, I love the Kinks' later work. This album was just really bland and there isn't a single song I'd want to hear again.
- I did not know that an album could be this British. Almost offensively British. - Every Kinks song I know is fast, fun, and carefree. I am not familiar with this more "complex" side of them, but I also do not care for it. Another "We have the Beatles at home" album, but this time to a somewhat painful degree, particularly with regard to the vocals. - I was going back and forth between 2 and 3 stars. Enjoyed "Death of a Clown." But was actively annoyed by "Harry Rag," "Tin Soldier Man," and definitely "Lazy Old Sun." All felt very slight and half-baked.
The Kinks' Something Else wasn't something else; it was just OK. The album was more pop-focused than the Village Green Preservation Society, which was more psychedelic. This album displays the Kinks' standard sound, but I don't know what the they created that was so different from other bands, like the Beatles or Beach Boys. Factors like fancy guitar work or witty lyrics weren't present. I personally didn't mind listening to it. This album had a pleasant bounce, and it passed by quickly.
...Huh. I expected to like this album more. But it really didn't do much for me. I definitely got the Beatles comparisons here, but I don't know what it is. Maybe less charismatic? Either way, their random psychedelic schtick didn't work for them like it did for the Beatles...at least not for me. "Waterloo Sunset" is the best song on this album, and it really seems a cut above everything else in terms of quality.
They already had The Beatles in the 60's, they didn't need another one. I didn't get why this is on the list, I don't find anything groundbreaking to it.
Never really grabbed my attention.
Cool guitar but couldn’t get a solid motif to me
Was okay
I feel really bad saying this, but honestly this album just didn’t do it for me. I understand The Kinks have their spot in music history and are super influential, but I just didn’t get into it. Every song kinda sounded the same and well… yeah. Sorry The Kinks, hopefully I like the next one more.
At this point, I’m afraid that when we do finally get another Beatles album I’m going to be completely burnt out on 60s Brit Pop. It’s not bad but it’s hard to separate it from a lot of the other bands from the decade if it’s not something you listen to often. Not entirely sure if it’s the band, album, or a single that counts as influential on this one.
I like The Kinks (really just the song Lola), but man did this album feel dated. Maybe it had to do with the mono recordings. Every song was a bit boring and safe. It dragged a lot for me. I was hoping something fun would come along but I was just met with blah.
Waterloo Sunset is obviously a great track but the rest of the album is quite lacking.
I think the kinks are good and underrated but I didn’t really enjoy this
Meh. Sorta worse Beatles.
Repetitive. The worst type of old music.
From "the kinks" I was expecting something more kinky than an "afternoon tea"... the whole album seems recorded from afar, not just temporally, but also as distance from the microphone.
This album isn't doesn't do much for me. It pales in comparison the psychadelic rock coming out from the Beatles. This album is tame and doesn't hold up. Not as good as VIllage Greeen Society. It's probably a 3 on enjoyment but out of principle I have to dock a point because I was excited for this album and it wasn't what I wanted.
Combo between Beatles and the stones.
- entspannt, aber auch hier ist wieder nichts wirklich herausgestochen
What am I missing? I had to keep reminding myself that this was not the Beatles.
Some really great tracks in here but a lot of twee, cloying stuff as well. 2/5
Not a connoisseur of the Kinks but I like some of their songs, so had fairly high expectations of this album. I was quite disappointed, and would have skipped several songs of I hadn't committed to listening to the entire album. I was quite bored. There is a nice Englishness about the album and I'm sure it was influential, but not really for me. Not a fan of Ray Davies' vocals and most songs did not move me at all. Melodically the songs are good/ very good but lacking in other aspects of musicality for me (I like songs like You Really Got Me better, but it's not on this album).
2.5
No começo fiquei na expectativa de reconhecer alguma música, que teria algum hit. Depois rolou um estranhamento pela impressão de uma tentativa de parecer como Beach Boys.
Honestly, I just don't know what this is. Is it just cookie cutter hippie music? Because I cannot, for the life of me, find anything interesting or transformational about this music. I know the Kinks are supposed to be hugely influential, but why? Were they the first to do the 60s/70s rock organ thing? It all sounds like ren fair background music. It's awful, is what I'm saying.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
Another meh album by the Kinks that's reaklly only known for its one or two hits, sorry
Huono homma kun albumi radio 2x parempi heh...
Respect the band but not for me.
Yeah pretty much like every band at that time
Very twee
Well damn, I was looking forward to hearing some Kinks and I heard the Beatles. Death of a Clown was alright, but really it just made me laugh a little bit. If I didn't know any better, I would say this song was written for or by Luke Sienko. That's all I got for these guys. Nothing terrible but sounded like they were trying to copy the Beatles. No excitement and kinds boring. 2
2.5 The Kinks have a handful of tracks that I really enjoy, such as Lola, You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night, and Destroyer - and none of those are here. In fact, there wasn’t really anything here that I overly enjoyed - the songs on this album just seem to lack a certain edge that the above songs have. Like, I really thought these guys were more of a garage rock group, but it seems that at this point in their career they were more interested in trying to emulate The Beatles, to the point that I could be convinced that some of these are genuines outtakes from the Fab Four. In doing so, I feel like they kind of backed themselves into a corner because, if you like The Beatles, you’re probably going to think this album is a second-rate knockoff, and if you don’t like The Beatles, then you’re probably not going to like this. The only notable song here is the closer, Waterloo Sunset, which is a really solid, sunny day feelgood kind of track, but once again, it wouldn’t feel out of place on a Beatles album. As for the rest of this - inoffensive, but forgettable. Give me back my proto-punk Kinks!
Well that's answered the question I didn't know I asked, as to "how would the Beatles sound if they had less talent". Most of that pretty skippable/forgettable. First and last tracks the only one worth a second listen. Even switched over to the stereo version as the mono sounded awful. Not a winner in my book. 2.5*
A bit of a goofy sound to it. Meh.
Melodies are catchy but overall the record is a bit boring.
I thought I liked The Kinks. But based on the two albums (so far?) on this 1001 Albums compendium, I have learned that I surprisingly only enjoy their radio hits.
Boring not my jam.
A bit long, a bit dull. Album felt a bit all over the place
bored my tits off tbh- only awoke for waterloo sunset.
Meh to the max
Not a big kinks guy. love Waterloo Sunset but otherwise boring.
The Kinks do better.
Never been a fan of the Kinks or this album.
This band always just feels like a cheap knockoff Beatles to me.
umyes
Niet mijn smaak
I like the Kinks but wasn't very familiar with this one. I think I'd have to give it another listen to see how I really like it.
A lot like Village Green, except instead of the bad songs being at the end, they are in the middle. And boy are some of these songs here annoying. But there are also some very strong tracks. I'd say it's about on par with Village Green if a bit more inconsistant with quality
similar sounds to the Beatles
Oh, man... this doesn't have any of the good ones on it. "Something Else" is like if "Revolver" or "Sgt. Peppers" were all Ringo tracks. This isn't bad, I guess, but I don't like anything about it.
Man, I just cannot enjoy bands that were clearly trying to be The Beatles but aren't The Beatles. 2/5
Recognize David Watts from The Jam, didn't know it was a Kinks song. Otherwise, this didn't interest me much
Five tracks in, somewhat unremarkable album. Nothing has really stood out to me at this point. Situation Vacant is fun, guitar in the chorus is a nice touch; love the piano in the background.
Waterloo sunset is a good song. The rest is forgettable
I enjoy later Kinks but this was bubble gum 1960s crap like early Beatles and Beach Boys. 2.75
The deeper I get into this project, the more I truly realize how influential the Beatles really were. The Kinks are a very poor man’s Beatles. The music is fine, Death of a Clown is a good song, but The Kinks best is at best a mid Beatles song 5.3/10
Allright.
I'm sure this was great in it's time but not for me now.
Een beekje dat voort aan het kabbelen is geeft me meer dan deze plaat
Kind of just sounds like a watered down version of the Beatles
Yet another white boy rock critic cult classic... an overlooked gem of 1960s chamber pop, just like soooo many others we have reviewed as part of 1001 albums. I mean, it's pleasant enough (by design). This marks the Ray Davies’ shift from hit rock songs (in the American mould) to a more personal reflection on Britishness and growing infatuation with music hall. It’s highly influential on baroque chamber pop, and much beloved by critics and music snobs, but the Kinks became a cult act at this point, and I just don’t want to drink the Kool-Aid. Waterloo Sunset and David Watts are dead-set classic songs, and worth the price of admission. But the rest of the album is just a bit meh. I have no great nostalgia for the Britain of years past, so it's a bit of a non-committal shrug from me. Someone has a fondness for 60s Kinks, and felt the need to include something, so they put this down. I honestly feel like it was a waste of time listening to this album. 2.5 stars, rounding down. Get a Kinks singles compilation instead.
ehhhhhhh
Didn’t really… just… not interesting to me. It felt like they were trying to recreate the Beatles sound and style but what a big swing and a miss. Didn’t really care for the music, and the lyrics seemed a little insignificant and superficial - something the Beatles were able to get away with because they were the Beatles.
Very influential band in the sixties, and very boring, outdated band nowadays. It wasn't a nice album, and I would like to just move on.
Passably pleasant pop.
Luckily it has "Waterloo Sunset", because the rest of this album is a like the Beatles having a hangover Monday.
A less likable Beatles I find.
Sadly this lives up to its name. It is topped and tailed with their best songs of this period, but this did feel like *A* Kinks album, rather than *THE* Kinks album. David Watts and Waterloo Sunset are two of Davies' best, but the stuff in-between feels a bit Kinks-by-numbers.
Listened to this while playing Aeon's End with my partner against Hollow Crown. We lost twice...again. Hmmm...I wanted to like this album...but it kinda just sounded like a handful of other albums I've heard on here. It was like another Beatles wannabe album. It wasn't bad, but there was nothing that struck me as original. Definitely will forget this listen in like a week...ha ha.
i don't dislike the kinks, but i don't like this much the kinks back to back. a little the kinks (as a treat) is fine.
I thought I liked The Kinks but I didn't particularly like this album. It made me want to listen to The Violent Femmes?
Sounds very much like The Beatles. Lots of harmonizing and poppy sound. For me, it's not an appealing style of music, mostly due to vocals.
I hear these guys compared to The Beatles sometimes and I just don't see it. Some of their songs are all right, others don't really hold up too well. Maybe you had to be there.
Like their later work more.
Just a bunch of lightweight, same- sounding, twee bits of fluff. This from the band that is considered a progenitor of heavy rock/metal. Most disappointing.
First listen Saved 4/13 Top track: Waterloo Sunset
I don’t think this has aged well. It was released the same year as Sargent Pepper. They sound very similar.
I just can't get into the Kinks. They might be too British for my North American tastes. That said, Situation Vacant is a good song. But overall, it's not my jam.
Still not into them
forgettable
Ihan kiva, paremmanlaatuista shalalaata, on taitoa. Mutta jää vain ihan kivaksi.
Overall this was pretty boring and slow. I thought it was under produced.
Meh
Beatles wannabe
60's rock that kinda sounds like the Beattles.
"Something Else by the Kinks" is solid. Brit Pop-Rock isn't usually my go-to, but "Waterloo Sunset" definitely stood out. Overall, it's a quality album, but it doesn't quite hit replay for me — 2/5.
Didn’t love The Kinks the first time and I still don’t love them now. They are just so middling compared to what else was happening in the genre in 1967.
I always assumed The Kinks were a punk band, so was a little surprised to hear that they are more Beatles-like. Not something I gravitate to, but it was ok. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song:
Eh. Give me the first two albums and some more angst or whatever is missing from this.
Best Song: Waterloo Sunset. This is an obvious choice. It has easily the most pleasant melody, and it has a kind of quiet innocence about it that isn't present in any of the other tracks. Worst Song: Harry Rag. It feels like they don't have the chutzpah to really push into the more intense direction that it really needs. I could see a band like The Pogues pulling this song off, but not these guys. Overall: Music that was probably important but does not hold up to modern listening. Overly long, with nothing that interesting to say.
Harry rag is fun Situation vacant - nice drum rhythms, weird stop near the end Love me till the sun shines - maybe fav so far Lazy old sun - cool vibes Waterloo sunset also nice but anticlimactic
kinda cringe
nothing special but not unenjoyable - the kinks have a solid formula that doesn’t really miss. highlights, as with their other albums, come when they deviate. best tracks: harry rag, David watts, Waterloo sunset
Twelve pretty forgettable tracks followed by Waterloo Sunset. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Waterloo Sunset Date listened: 27/04/23
Only listened to about half the album. It was ok, i guess. It didn't really hold my interest though.
Nothing much other than Waterloo Sunset.
Typical 60s psychedelic tripe. Basically a lot of songs about drinking tea and spending time with your grand nanny. Some of the melodies weren’t that bad, so it earns a two star.
so many tracks!!! all knock off sounds of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, pretty juvenile lyrics and a bit of the Who. Overall sounds sloppy and not at all authentic.
This feels like an off-brand version of the Beatles (especially "Lazy Old Sun"). Not terribly impressed.
not for me
Tired of this kind of goofy, overly-specific 60s music.
1.5, wow, this sucked
I've never been a huge fan of the Kinks, preferring the rockier early 60s albums, and this album, while sardonic, just seems uninteresting
Plan and simple I didn’t care for this album the pacing sucked and the songs were just not that interesting. felt that it didn’t deserve to be on this list at all. If we’re being honest I was bored on my first listen and confused on my second listen even more. The rating was really only saved by Harry rag in my opinion. Not the easiest listen. These cats were not cooking or swinging unfortunately.
Why is he bad at singing its like 60’s front bottoms wtf Not all that, not bad but like i dont get why its one of the greatest Lyrics are weird but it was the 60’s I HATE when horns are playing the same thing as the vocals. Tin soldier man is Bad. Bad song. Not great. Not awful. Definitely not one of the best albums ever made.
Starten sagde mig ikke så meget. Teksterne er meget 60´er spacy, se mig jeg er på stoffer.
It feels and sounds like a compilation of other BritPop music from the era only not as good. There are certainly some diverse musical influences here, but none of this does it better than many other contemporary groups, and the whole thing is just boring, imo.
seems a bit dated
Doesn't really grip my interest except for a few songs.
Halt typisches 60s easy listening. Holt mich jetzt hier und heute genauso wenig ab wie ne Mondlandung, aber schlecht ists natürlich nicht.
Absolutely horrible, music aged terribly and just about every song was dopey. It's as if the album was made by children or a budget version of The Beatles. Anyone reviewing this as a good album has got to be smoking penis. 3/10.
It’s mostly okay. I feel like the execution of these songs largely didn’t move me. Even the songs that had more energy still felt lethargic. Other than that, it was a lot of repetition and generic elements. I think listening to some tracks outside the context of the album will be a benefit by letting their unique qualities shine brighter. That being said, the second half of the album has considerably more interesting qualities, which can belt felt across the stretch from Lazy Old Sun to Waterloo Sunset. Faves: Waterloo Sunset, David Watts, Lazy Old Sun
Ehhhhh
Just OK. I would much more enjoy a "Best of the Kinks".
All sounds a little generic for the time. There’s no great leaps forward here for 1967. It’s ok. A little slow in places. Waterloo Sunset being the obvious highlight. This should really be 2.5 stars. Not quite making a 3.
sorry, not a fan of this. a dull album. i guess its fine, but its not my thing. i kinda expected there to be a few bangers since i know that a few other kinks tracks have stood the test of time, but wherever those tracks are they ain't here. 2/5, because even though i was able to happily listen to the whole thing i know that i wont do so again, and that it won't leave any impression. i already don't think i can remember any of the songs lol. this might make me sound incredibly stupid, but fuck it i have to ask - is it an intentional stylistic decision to make the vocals sound as if they're recorded down a telephone line? or is it just cause they're over 50 years now, and audio recording was just shit back then? ive heard way older music that had way better vocal quality than this so I'm inclined to believe it's the former lmao fave track - two sisters. what is that, the harpsichord? love that fucking thing, if indeed thats even what it is. the two sisters from this song should hook up with the two princes from spin doctors.
Meh.
I don’t know. I don’t like any British music. One song is literally named “afternoon tea.” No thanks
Not my type of stuff
The album is very eccentric. It is not good. No need to listen to again. Not sure why 3 Kinks albums made it to this list. That was also unnecessary. It is better than a 1. Not really a 2 but I will round up.
Thought I would like it more than I did.
Really disappointing. Shite in all honesty.
Lifted up to a 2 by the amazing Waterloo Sunset, which gives you an idea how shit the rest of it is
Not my bag but always liked Waterloo sunset.
Meh, tusinakamaa ilman kiimaa
Veikee toki, mut ei ihmeellinen
I was looking forward to this one. I was very disappointed unfortunately! The only song stood out to me was the last one, waterloo sunset. There are some decent songs on here but this album just was so short I really didnt have time to take in the music. Need more 3/10
Boring Oompa Loompa music
you guys i think david watts is gay the kinks are so cool, and ironically, a little bit like david watts from the album's opening track - kind of above it all, aloof. there's a certain attitude that comes with listening to kinks tracks, where they know they're contemporaries with some really great rock bands, but they just kind of don't care. they're content filling songs with la la's and doot doo's and shit because they're just having fun. the music is catchy, it has that quintessential 60s guitar and piano tone, and it's not trying to reinvent the wheel or anything. the kinks are somehow both underrated and perfectly rated - no one talks about them as rock legends like the beatles, the rolling stones or the who, because they're not, but they're still a really solid group capable of putting together some great works with a lot of staying power (you really got me, waterloo sunset, lola, all day and all of the night, etc). this album isn't super cohesive, the only thing holding it together is its general aloof nature. it doesn't stay within a certain genre, but that's not necessarily to its credit. the final three songs of this album is its best stretch, in my opinion. even then, with how catchy afternoon tea is, it's about making fucking tea. the kinks could have been legends if they tried harder. this is one where i'm like "did i really need to hear this before i die, or could i have just listened to waterloo sunset for the millionth time? did i really need to hear harry rag?" the biggest indictment on this album is comparing it to its contemporaries. here are some albums that came out in 1967: the doors debut s/t donovan's mellow yellow jefferson airplane's surrealistic pillow, which has white rabbit and somebody to love here are some albums that came out in 1966: pet sounds, the best record of all time revolver by the beatles blonde on blonde by bob dylan if you can believe your eyes by mamas and the papas framing this album that way, is it really one of the most essential 1,001 albums, or did the author just really like the kinks? i dunno. this one is okay. it can be funny and silly, but it's really not great. i really do like waterloo sunset, though. great track.
Sounds like every other boy band album that came out in the 60s.
Something Else By The Kinks made me want to listen to Something Else Not By The Kinks. This has one really good song and a lot of waffling twee. Rescued by Waterloo Sunset to a 2/5, a real example of an album that doesn't need to be on this list but is because iconic acts get their entire back catalogue catalogued.
yan sanayi beatles
It’s the swinging sixties in London when this album comes out, yeah? So why does it make me want to buy a tea cosy and call my Nan? It just feels anachronistic. Sweet, with some razor Ray Davies wit, but….OLD.
Of the many English rock albums I’ve gotten over the past few weeks, this is the earliest, and unfortunately there really isn’t anything on here that I haven’t heard better elsewhere. Musicianship is competent but unspectacular. Vocals are inoffensive, but not something I particularly like to listen to. Songwriting isn’t bad, but doesn’t really connect with me. The Kinks were undoubtedly influential, and there are some songs of theirs I like, but unfortunately, after my first listen through this, I don’t particularly like any of these. Best musical moments are the intro to Waterloo Sunset, but outside of that, it’s pretty thorough mediocrity. Top tracks: - Harry Rag – Weird, and I don’t really like it, but it’s memorable, I guess. - End of the Season – Kinda nice, but not one I’d save. - Waterloo Sunset – Intro is nice, and some of the musical parts are pretty decent. That’s it.
The songs had weird titles and lyrics that feel like they're about nothing. Also most of the songs have a 60s pop sound that I dislike like the early Beatles.
Not for me. Never been a fan of that English county fayre vibe that all the kinks albums have.
ik så fedt som det lyder og ser ud
Its become really dated and a bit naff
A few tracks get homeliness right, but all over pretty dull
Eh. Too long. Didn’t really do it for me.
It’s still really really boring. It lacks the interested to keep me engaged for the length of its runtime. For this experiment The Kinks are 0 for 2.
Quite liked David Watts, didn't care for anything else
Dunno. The late sixties pop/punk/psych doesn't really do it for me.
Ugh - it's like a gor blimey guvnor musical. This is why you stick to the hits and not wander around the albums of anyone except the beatles and floyd
Interesting mixture of feelings in this album. Some distorted lsd songs, some funny ones. The more you pay attention on the lyrics the more the songs grow on you.
Not bad, reminds me of the Beatles but it's not really my style.
Deluxe edition, seems like mostly b sides
Beatles did it better
Nope
We listened to this on the first leg of our road trip two weeks ago. I did not like it. I can’t remember why specifically, but I know I don’t want to go back and listen again to find out why.
From my review of Arthur (Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire): “If The Kinks hadn’t been banned from touring in the US for 4 years in the late 1960s during the height of the British Invasion, they might have been way bigger here.” Not a chance based on this boring album.
All a bit lacklustre, I'd rather listen to something else
Je ne sais pas combien il y a d’albums de the Kinks dans cette liste, mais je trouve que celui-ci ressemble beaucoup à The kinks are the village green preservation society.
Sounds like the first phase of The Beatles, which a hate from my guts. Insufferable.
This is the fifth album by the English rock band the Kinks. The music genre can be described as baroque pop, which is a combination of rock and classical music elements. The album did not sell well in the US or UK as a result of a multitude of factors. However, the album has still been praised as one of the Kinks' best. I did not find much that I loved about this album, but it passed the time while I was working and then piqued my interest in listening to some classical music.
Música sesentera animada
Not my cup of Yorkshire tea.
I get their importance, I appreciate how creative and prolific they were, and I like a few of their songs, but The Kinks don't do a whole lot for me, especially this album. Just not my cup of tea.
Has that 60s folky vibe. Appreciate the influence, but too many la la las. Not my style for this era.
At the time, this was likely cutting edge stuff but sounds very dated now.
Bien
