Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Waterloo Sunset is so good, but didn't really feel anything particular with the rest. I think the Kinks in general are very cool though, you can hear the early seeds of punk rock in there.
It's The Kinks. I like the Kinks. Some songs stuck out and some did not. Not an album i think I'll continue listening too. Waterloo sunset is a great way to finish an album.
One of their better early albums. I prefer the 70s and 80s albums, but this is good. 3.5/5
pretty good
Eh…
not great but kinda sweet
I'm gonna be really critical of this because, while the Davies have created a fantastic album, it isn't necessarily mind blowing in any terms.
This is the third album by The Kinks that I have gotten and my opinion of them hasn’t changed much. The music is decent but nothing extraordinary jumps out to me. I will keep listening to them if I get other albums but so far I’m less than impressed.
I don't like this as much as Village Green Preservation Society or Arthur, though it does have some good tracks. Probably the strongest songs Dave Davies has contributed to a Kinks album, and David Watts and Waterloo Sunset are both standouts.
I’ve never done much of a dive into The Kinks outside of their more popular singles, so this is my first real play through of an album by them. I always saw them as the scrappy underdogs in the British Invasion scene. Their craft is undeniable, but the fan base never reached astronomical levels. Even when talking about them today, there’s a reverence, but they were never The Stones or Beatles or even The Who. I think this album is a good illustration as to why. You’ll find well crafted pop songs from start to finish, but none that really transcends the medium. Music was moving so fast by this point and this album already feels like it’s falling behind the pace. It is also deeply British, unlike some of their more world weary contemporaries. That said, Waterloo Sunset is a real gem, and it is enough to justify this album’s existence. I probably just need to spend more time with more essential Kinks albums to get their appeal, but this one felt very non-essential on first listen.
Not my favorite by The Kinks. Aside from David Watts, the rest was unremarkable. That's too bad 'cause I like this band.
3.5/5 Nice and sweet short songs which fit perfectly together. Sometimes a little too cheesy but overall an easy going album. I knew the kinks but never listened an album, but will try some of their other works for sure. Favourite songs: - Death of a clown - Tin Soldier man - Waterloo sunset
Good but not my thing
Some good 60s era rock. Nothing super special though.
Really like this album. It feels like it was ahead of it's time 1967. Tin Soldier Man slaps
Classic 60's sound. Was hoping for some kinky shit. Still solid I liked Afternoon Tea.
Not what you expect when you hear 'The Kinks'. Something Else dips its toes into the water of psychedelic and prog rock before Ray takes over the reins of studio production. It was a nice alternative sound from the Kinks. 3.5/5.
A bit too sing-songy and repetitive for my taste. Honestly if they wanted to rip off of The Beatles they at least could’ve tried to make it sound… better? If I could rate this a 2.5 instead of a 3 I would.
It was just okay
„Groovy“, I say as I channel my inner flower child. „Way too meandering“, my Millennial pop-caramelized brain responds. Yes, it truly is the modern Faustian duality of man.
nett
Gutes Album, aber enthält keinen meiner Lieblings-the Kinks Lieder
Sounds mostly like the most dated aspects of the Beatles music. Every so often some of the harder elements of their future bleed through, but mostly it just feels quaint. Not a hard listen, just a bit dry.
Prior to this my only knowledge of the Kinks was Lola and You Really Got Me, both really great songs. This album was entirely new to me. Listening to it, it's easy to understand why everyone compares them to The Beatles. Honestly, this album just didn't really do anything for me. It wasn't bad. Just nothing really stood out.
As an Anglophile, the music of The Kinks lets me live out my lad fantasies. These songs are little sketches of life that are not particularly evocative. I do like the pop style of the backing tracks quite a bit.
Really was something else. Neat chill could listen again Waterloo sunset was the standout
Objectively I'm sure it is a good album, but The Kinks is not my type of music.
favorites - death of a clown, two sisters, no return, tin soldier man, love me till the sun shines, waterloo sunset least favorites - harry rag
Decent but not my thing
Greit nok
A good album for it's time, but I'm partial to The Beatles and Rolling Stones.
Agreed to be very British. There is a song about afternoon tea which seems British. 3.3
I was never really a fan of the Beatles, but I feel like this album is what the Beatles would be like if their sound was more modernized. 3/5. Favorite Track: David Watts
I was never really a fan of the Beatles, but I feel like this album is what the Beatles would be like if their sound was more modernized. 3/5. Favorite Track: David Watts
Like a whole album of the early Beatles folksy stuff. Inoffensive
Not terrible.
I only knew Waterloo Sunset from this one before listening, and I'm not surprised. The sound is very of the time, with admittedly some interesting lyrics and writing here and there. My top pick is 'Two Sisters', for the lyrics and the fun use of harpsichord!
Enjoyed it thanks then
3.75
3.75
I see why some like it but it's too slow for me.
It was kind of slow, it wasn't bad. Not what I expected from the kinks.
Day 2
Always thought The Kinks deserved a little more credit then they received. Good riffs, good rhythms, witty lyrics. That said, only song on this album I knew was Waterloo Sunset. 3.5/5
13 Kinks songs I’ve never heard and I enjoyed them all! 3.5/5
Started off well, jolly tunes but then it just kept going
This was fine. I struggle with The Kinks, personally, they seem to be finding "an idea" in each song then they play "The idea" then that's sort of... it. Every song fizzled out for me. But some of the ideas in there were really nice.
Should listen to again.
It was fine. 🤷🏼
Lots of the kinks on this list. This one is okay, like the rest. It does have a couple of good tracks on it though, I like 'David Watts'
A cute & chill album, which is not how I thought I'd describe something by The Kinks but here we are. For something that came out in the late '60s, this is far superior compared to the ubiquitous folksy, psychedelic rock that plagued the era. You can still hear some of that in the record, but its balanced out by light rock, pop, some R&B and surprisingly, bossa nova. Standout tracks are Death of a Clown, Tin Soldier Man, Funny Face, and Waterloo Sunset - which I was pleasantly surprised to recognize.
there are better kinks albums. its alright, but their filler songs on this one aren't really up to much.
Really enjoyed Afternoon Tea and Harry Rag is good fun.
Good stuff
Partito malino, ma 'Two sisters' mi è piaciuta.
Not as good as village green
Good album but the kinks have better
not as good as the kinks album friday. it's alright i think. less unique of an album.
Agreeing with Jacob, this album was the most British thing Iʻve ever heard. Probably too British. There were some songs I liked, David Watts and Waterloo Sunset for instance. Death of a Clown was entrancing, and Two Sisters had the kind of baroque pop feel of some Belle and Sebastian (possibly my fav all time band). But damn is there a lot of cheeky British humor that just does not do it for me. Combined with marching band sounds and some real whiny vocals from Ray Davies, there was some truly unpleasant material on here. 3/5
Sweet, endearing record. And possibly the most British thing I’ve ever heard. This is what I picture in my head when I think of what a random British person had on in the 1960’s, while eating some equally British foodstuffs. Just fun and enjoyable to hear. There weren’t any huge standout songs to me, but they have a very immediate, almost theatrical sound that I liked. Some almost McCartney moments with the songwriting, and I enjoyed the genre switch-ups. For me, they get a 3, via a somewhat generous rounding-up.
decent 3- stars. Village green is better but both are 3 stars. Some standout tracks like waterloo sunset.
Solid lyrics, sounds very 60s.
Nice album. Some dated lyrics but kinda funny. Waterloo one is great.
Not bad
typical 60s . 3/5
Good
Solid late 60s British rock album. Didn't really know anything by them before. I like hearing bands from that genre other than the Beatles. Love the Beatles. Expanding my horizons
So 60s it's funny
What if the Beatles never grew up and got good
Album title exactly reflects how I feel about it (Waterloo Sunset aside). It's decent, definitely more coherent than Arthur, but not a lot better. Scrapes a 3 on the strength of Waterloo Sunset, the rest is fine but easily disappears into the background.
Meh, alright.
Ok, I like the touches on folk stuff.
Blurrrrrrr
Cheeeeel
In an wild turn of events, the Kinks come out with another album of solid baroque pop
Something jelqs
Merely ok. Only Waterloo Sunset did anything for me.
A whimsical and cheeky record. There are deep layers of humour and wit buried beneath quirky instrumentation and 60s hippie counterculture vibes. Very bri’ish, but in the best possible way.
Pretty good. Some pleasant, mildly catchy tunes. 3.5 stars
May not have aged the best but still pretty catchy as a whole
Saw the Kinks and I was expecting fuzzy rock. The psychedelic harmonies that followed were pretty fun.
3.5/5 just ok
It’s been almost a year since I got that kinks concept album but I still remember that I enjoyed shangri-la more than anything on this album
Liked it. Not my favorite
Two sisters good, finishes with Waterloo sunset. A bit too vaudeville
Harry Rag was funny Overall it was good, had some good piano and good trumpet, but I wouldn't listen to it much on my own time
6/10 Best Song - Waterloo Sunset
Feels pretty middle of the line to me. I wasn't blown away, but I thought it was a decent listen.
Definitiv hörbar, würde wohl wieder zurückkommen wollen.
the Kinks have some great songs. This album does not contain those songs.
I'll take or leave the Kinks brand of psychadelia, but it might be the contrast necessary here. Something Else turns out to sound wistful. That's impressive given the rather simple formal elements.
The album is a safe album from the 60s, part of the rise of the British rock scene. It is enticing to view The Kinks in the same lens of every 60s band to come out of Great Britain, but there is a debate to whether that is a lazy perspective or just a boring fact of the matter. This review leans toward the latter. Credit where it is due, The Kinks enjoy a sense of longevity that the Stones enjoy, and that is saying something. The Kinks certainly earned their spot on 1001, if only just for their single "Waterloo Sunset". It is a beautiful song, and gives this album a sense of being something special, and it is.
It's good, but I'm not sure this ranks among the Kinks top albums. It’s pretty Kinky I would say. 3 stars.
I used to think that I LOVED The Kinks. I guess I do, but this is not the album I would reference if anyone asked. That album would be one of their 'Greatest HIts' albums.
The kinks when they started had a real visceral energy. By this point that's gone and what you have is a wry satirical whimsical album. At moments it's divine and you could not deny the power of Waterloo sunset. However its all lacks a bit of energy.
Not bad
I didn't realise David Watts was a cover. For me, the Kinks have always been a band in the margins, not quite the Beatles, not quite Bowie, not quite this not quite that. But always so English. They still seem like that, but there were some good tracks on this album.
Folk rock, directly from the early-Beatles playbook. Death of a Clown is the standout for me. The rest is OKish. No really bad songs, nothing that blows me away either. Solid effort. 3/5
Some goofy lyrics. Music is basic, but fun.
I felt like it started strong and then died off after the first few songs. Very Beatles-esque folk rock with some silly songs mixed in. Decent but not fantastic in my opinion. 6/10
I really do like the Kinks, but there's just a lot of nothing on this record, besides the big hits.
I dig it
Kinky, but not my favorite.
Every song is catchy. No real standouts though. Definitely liked it but not as much as some of their other stuff. 3.5 stars.
One of the best rock's bands of the 60s and 70s. I like it.
Average. Nothing too groundbreaking.
Fand ich ganz nett. Der englische sixties-Sound ganz ohne Beatles.
very of its time
Far better than the title makes it sound. Waterloo Sunset and Death of a Clown are stone cold classics, the rest is somewhat take-it-or-leave-it.
Lyrically clunky but really heard influences on sound of Elliott Smith and others
I’ve had to listen to this twice (so far) to appreciate it. The production is so bad at times it hurts, and my goddess turn those vocals up! However I am now starting to appreciate and like some of these songs. I’d like to read more about how it fits with other artists at the time, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Pink Floyd etc because it’s hard to tell exactly who was influencing whom - the late sixties silly psychedelic sound and all (not Dylan but I can hear Dylan’s style in a few of these tracks). Anyway I’m going to call it a 3 for now and listen a few more times.
Kyl mä tästäkin the Kinksista ihan tykkään mutta ei tää ehkä mitään järisyttävän uutta tarjoile. Kelpolevy. 3/5
Ihan hyvää aurinkoista rokkia. Tykkäsin ehkä village green preservation societystä enemmän.
Varsin hyvä. Tykkäsin kyllä Village Greenistä enemmän. 3/5.
High 3
3/30/22
Not bad, but I still just can't fully get into them. I think this is a band I should come back to because some songs really are solid.
3/5 fun but not enough
Watts and Waterloo sandwich mostly OK tunes.
On my 3rd album by The Kinks we rejoin them as they continue their quest to manifest the Beatles. This is an album of the goofy 60s "boopy boopy I'm a mushroom man, I will wear this silly hat doo doo doo" type music. Lots of that British silliness, jaunty tunes, well made but feels like they're aping the Beatles so hard it's just impossible not to notice. Tin Soldier Man sounds exactly like Yellow Submarine. Love Me Til the Sun Shines is a solid tune. Waterloo Sunset is pretty good too. Added both to the playlist. Overall, competently made but it's been done better.
Better then the kinks album I got before
This was just ok, and I was hoping for more as I like other Kinks songs. 3
Like early Who.
That was not something else, but it was something pretty nice
It's a great album, but the Kinks are capable of better. There are excellent tracks like Harry Rag, Situation Vacant, Love Me Till The Sun Shines and the incredible Waterloo Sunset, but overall, this album suffers from a lack of appealing melodies.
This sound like a cheap version of The Beatles but I like some songs!
Humour became satire and portraits became murals. The Beatles were left out with Sgt. Peppers and everything else that appeared in the British charts that year. (6/10) FT: Waterloo Sunset
Maybe I would benefit from listening to other The Kinks stuff ahead of this, but for now this album was was kinda dull
Lola
I really like the Kinks but this album wasn’t doing it for me. Waterloo Sunset tho still great
Interessant. Beatles or the Doors
Nice
I think I like the more rock-focused Kinks. I did like Death of a Clown due to the interesting vocal mix but everything else is just okay.
This album was very underwhelming for me and it was very much on in the background. Couldn't pin point anything exciting to say about it nor could I criticise it, very meh. Reflecting this feeling is the album cover itself, it's just not speaking to me and I can't put my finger on why. It's all just MEH. 5/10 for the cover.
This Pearly King writes some bummer narratives, doesn’t he?
The Kinks are always 3 star, seldom 5 star.
More Kinks sounding like the Kinks sounding like the beatles.
This is my least favorite of the three Kinks albums I've heard so far (Arthur and Village Green being the other two) but still plenty of fun.
Yeah it was good. I liked the lo fi tracks.
Not bad. Will revisit.
Cool album and fun listen! Wasn't a huge fan of the hard panning of vocals to one side and the whole instrumental to the other, but still good none the less. 3.5/5 Favourite Tracks: Situation Vacant, Waterloo Sunset
cute
Not bad. Found one song that the black keys covered
“The album's power lies in its calm music, since it provides an elegant support for Davies' character portraits and vignettes.”
A pleasant vibe, but not very many songs you can grab onto. Mostly empty calories. Best track: Waterloo Sunset
B side (has Waterloo Sunset) better than the A side.
Good, but not any real standouts
6/10. Really liked Waterloo Sunset, the rest of the album was pretty meh.
Entirely unremarkable but fairly listenable. 6/10
Way different than other music I have heard from the Kinks (You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night). Kind of feels like their "Revolver/Sgt. Pepper" level of experimentation which a lot of bands tried to emulate back in the mid-60s. This feels like one of the more successful attempts to do this, and some songs really reminded me of McCartney's writing technique. The album grew on me through the first listen, and I bet it would grow on me more through subsequent listens as well. 3.5/5. NOTE: Love Me Till The Sun Shines is catchy and has been added to my Starred list.
I had never heard this album but I liked it.
yeah was ok. I liked it will I remember it?
well. You know. Waterloo Sunset.
Honey, drop everything! The new Beatles album just dropped!
Strangely, Wikipedia classifies this album as "Baroque Pop, music hall, R&B". I'm not sure what Baroque Pop is, but this album feels like a collection of tunes in search of a genre. There are some undertones I like a bit, especially the ones that steer towards Celtic, but ultimately it feels closer to typical 60s stuff than anything else. 3 stars.
Held in high esteem by some, merely an average late-60's / early-70s band to my tastes.
I know it's an important album/band and I can hear the influence on a lot of the (Britpop)bands I used to love in the 90ies but this just doesn't do much for me. Too jaunty. Too music hall. 6/10
Perfectly fine album. Nothing too much to like, but also nothing to dislike. Very interesting sound for the time it was recorded, I'll give it that
i liked this album, some songs we’re questionable but others are fun nothing really stuck out to me again so I’d say it was average
My second early-Kinks album in the past few weeks ("Arthur"). Not wanting to repeat too much but it's another very-British sounding collection - I do like it, but not as much as "Arthur" which came a few years after this. I think my earlier Kinks comment applies here, making comparisons to The Who. I'm wishing the Kinks had sold a whole bunch of their tunes to The Who - who I grew up a huge fan of, but if I'm honest only had a very short peak of greatness. Imagine Moon/Entwistle/Townshend crushing these tunes - would have been something... Anyways - I can hear a lot of where they'd end up over the next few years in this one; "David Watts" is a great opener - the album does fade quite a bit in the 2nd half, with lack of energy but "Waterloo Sunset" is a lovely closer. I think that second half contributes to me feeling like overall it's not too edgy or aggressive which an extra dose of overall would have pushed this up a notch for me, but it's a solid 3 - a nice example of good early British pop-rock. 6/10 3 stars.
Very cheeky. A strange mix of styles, from pirate music (Harry Rag) to straight rockers (David Watts). Enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
Not what I was expecting from the Kinks. The chamber pop arrangements were pretty fun, and there were definitely some really cool ideas that did flesh out well, but a lot of it also felt a little unfinished in quality, especially when it comes to the musician's performances. Good songs that just needed some work, IMO.
Meets a bar set by contemporaries, and has some original cool baroque/folk stuff. Some other stuff falls pretty blandly, which leaves us pretty much dead smack in the middle of the road.
Part of the Very English catalog of the Kinks
enjoyable but I'm guessing this is not their best is it?
Pretty average album. What makes this album unique is most the songs are different stories about people. Musically it feels very generic for the 60s. 5.8/10
Fun and upbeat 60s pop. Doesn't really do much for me that other albums don't do better but I enjoy it well enough.
meg
Bit twee but Waterloo Sunset is a great track
3.5
I enjoyed what I listened to of this album (I really like the story element of the kinks) but it was my cleaning day so I switched to Madonna for motivation.
It was alright, a bit too all over the place though
Kinks have some of my favourite songs from that era, but on their albums there are some really boring songs. Waterloo Sunset and Death of a Clown are bangers though.
Bit meh to be honest. It was on, I heard it, but nothing stood out to me.
Zoals Arie terecht opmerkte: Aardig, maar The Beatles doen dit beter...
Best leuk, maar geen Beatles 😉
Leuk hoor. Zitten paar fijne nummers tussen.
Hard to listen to this for the first time in 2021 because it is SO 1960's. I love the Kinks but didn't know they went back this far.
Kinks good. Some songs added to playlist.
60% good 40% weird/bad
Brit classic rock. Never gave it a full chance before but not terrible.
It's okay, I mean it sounds like that era of music. Some good songs like Waterloo Sunset and Lazy Old Sun
2.5
Haven't listened to this entire album before. It's instantly recognizable as Ray Davies, though. Creativity abounds (No Return is lightweight Bossa Nova, immediately followed by Harry Rag which is borderline shanty) and absolute Britishness shines through nearly every song in both the lyrics and the music.
Great album, but I was hoping for more of the hits on it.
Pretty dope, good background music 7/10
Perfectly pleasant but nothingness.
OK, not great. Got bored.
Better than the last album I had by the Kinks. It wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t horrible to listen to by any means.
Pretty creative, easy to listen to, enjoyable album. Lyrics and themes are on the silly side but I definitely enjoyed it. Hard 3 low 4 for me.
Very Beatles-esque but who could blame them!
Not what I was expecting at all, thought it was going to be punk for some reason. Was more like The Beach Boys style. Enjoyable but nothing stood out as special. 3/5
Was OK
So far again underwhelmed. First song to catch my ear is the bossa influenced “no return”. But mostly for the bossa. “Love me till the sun shines” is alright. One thing I can say I do particularly enjoy about this album is the drumming. Really nice grooves going on. “End of the season” was nice. I like the nature sounds lol. But also a nice short song that feels summery. “Waterloo sunset” melody sounds so familiar but I can’t place it. And that’s the end of the core album. The rest are bonus tracks. I have a problem figuring out what a 2 and 4 rating sounds like. I know a 5. I stick a lot of stuff in 3. And 1 I assume would be crap. But I’m torn on this album. I think ideally I’d give like a 2.5 or 2.7 or something. I guess 3 will be fine.
Pretty good early Kinks album (1967).
I always loved the song David Watts. This song sets a great tempo for the album. This is the type of Kinks stuff I like. Uptempo and fun songs. The Kinks are a classic band so I feel there must be some 4s / 5s in the mix somewhere. This one just isn’t consistent enough to get there.
Some clear stand-out tracks here: Waterloo Sunset, Situation Vacant, and Love Me Till the Sun Shines. The rest is just fine. It's a perfectly fine album.
Yhden kappaleen tunnistin ennakolta, joten minulle jokseenkin tuntematon aiemmin. Menevää, joitain jänniä kuvoita, jne. Kyllä tätä toisen kerran mielellään kuuntelee ja perehtyy tuotantoon paremmin. 3.5/5 pyöristyy nyt alaspäin.
I love some of their stuff but it’s only a ***
Perushyväok.
Pari parempaa biisiä, monta vähän mitäänsanomatonta, mutta tuossahan tuo meni taustalla. Levyn arvo suuruusluokkaa 3, arviotarkkuus +/- 10 %.
Well that album was long. 52 songs and I knew none. I do like their “Lola” but that’s cause I like Cola! Liked Autumn Almanac & Sand on my Shoes. Saw they had several songs in Wes Anderson’s Darjeeling.
Yeah fine. Easy listening but nothing special.
This is not dissimilar to the last Kinks album we were sent, Village Green. I’d call it psychedelic folk; the experts call it acoustic baroque pop. Each have one or two standout tunes. I think the first two tracks on this LP are strong and Waterloo Sunset is nice as well. Ray Davies was a talented guy who reinvented his sound every few years.
Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-...
Waterloo Sunset hingegen geht wirklich immer. Ach komm, 2,8 sind auf jeden Fall drin.
wasn't super feeling it. definitely feel the beatles vibe. half-listened after day at Mt Hood
I did say that I wanted another Kinks album. I know now that I do like the Kinks, or at least the idea of them. Many of these songs went into the background but there were some that I enjoyed including David Watts and Afternoon Tea. They feel like the ultimate UK Soft Rock type group and this album cover is kind of creepy especially the guys in the bottom and top right. I liked their first album better but this was still good.
Death of a Clown and Harry Rag are my two favorites off the front side. David Watts I wasn't too impressed by. Musical shift to the more relaxed on the B side. Afternoon Tea is a bop.
Sounded like the Beatles. I got kinda bored tbh.
Some weird tracks that were interesting
A few standout songs here and there like Waterloo Sunset, fun listen but nothing that really gripped me
Waterloo sunset is nice
It's the Kinks - but I prefer later.
Hippie pop. Similar to the stones. Enjoyed some songs. Had high expectations for the kinks.
it's more kinks
Good album, I like the Kinks. Very 60’s era sounding.
Fav: Harry Rag, Waterloo Sunset
Good classics.
Meh
Kinky
pretty average overall. sounds Queen inspired/around the same time era, but not as exciting or impactful. bright and happy mood.
not bad. spoofy only had deluxe. probably wouldnt relisten
Always down for the Kinks. Makes me think of Wes Anderson movies
It was something
decent , old normal , nothing really pops out.
Wouldn't go out of my to listen again, but I did enjoy it. Some nice and interesting compositions, and I like that it covers a range of different styles yet still sounds cohesive as an album.
later kinks is way better, this is too samey to the who and beatles from that era
3/5. Very much a Beatles-era band from the UK. Hearing a lot of similarities between the two bands.
A couple of classics and the rest is ok.
its a classic kinks album with decent but sometimes odd lyrics a variety of melodies but always the kinks sound
Not my favorite Kinks album but it was a good attempt at something a little different
Good but recording leaves something to be desired
If the Beatles are Moe, the Stones are Larry, and The Who are Curly, the Kinks are Shemp.
I found it pretty boring, especially for it being released after the album with "You Really Got Me".

I didn't find this particularly interesting. Vaguely Beatlesy but it didn't unremarkable, like Beatles tunes they didn't bother includint on a final album. Probably because I'm removed from the context in which it was released since The Kinks are cited as influential on a lot of music I like but it just didn't do much for me 2.5 Highlights: Situation Vacant
everything you would expect from the 60's Kinks. No real bangers here.
This wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. Not really the Kinks that I am familiar with. It was a little too weird at times. Probably just a 2. Also pretty long. Liked Songs: "David Watts" , "Harry Rag" , "Tin Soldier Man" , "Situation Vacant" , "Funny Face" , "Waterloo Sunset" , "Polly" , "Lincoln County"
Nah
Love Me Till the Sun Shines and Waterloo Sunset were alright. Technology of the era produced Pet Sounds. So I don't know what the reason is for the way this album sounds.
Couldn’t get on board with these blokes
Not for me
I was looking forward to this album when it came up,that feeling faded fast. Very disappointed in this album. No energy and no emotion. A definite miss for me.
It's not *bad* but also 1967 was incredibly stacked in terms of releases so this one is pale in comparison.
thats soooooo boring i guess that who doesnt like the beatles imagine them like this
My biggest regret on this site are being too generous in my grading. I gave Joni Mitchell a 3 yesterday and after reflection the truth is I just did not like it. My child often asks me, "Why are you listening to this junk? Just listen to what you like." So Joni Mitchell should have been a 1 or a 2 and while I cannot go back and fix that, unfortunately for Ray Davies and the Kinks they are going to take a beating today as I work toward more forceful scoring. While Something Else is a critically beloved album that showcases Ray Davies’ lyrical wit and the band’s uniquely British sensibility, its modest production, stylistic scatter, and reliance on music‑hall charm makes it feel unexciting if you’re expecting the punch of late‑60s rock or the conceptual depth of the Kinks’ later work. These elements don’t resonate with me and even though the album’s historical reputation is strong this is at best a 2 for me.
old school. catchy.
shit sucked Would I listen again: no. Deserves to be on this list: no. 2.0
Meh.
3rd Kinks album. Can't get the Blur comparison out of my head now. Crosses quite a few styles. Waterloo Sunset is a classic but I'm just not a fan of the album. 2/5.
"Must listen". This is a cult classic and I can see it inspiring a lot of future acts, I also see the influence of the decade shining through them, and I wonder if this couldn't have been left out from the list. I preferred the Village Green Preservation Society by a lot to this, this one just feels like imitation Beatles done right. If I'd been a child of the 70s this might be a lot of fun, but we've evolved so much after this, and the project isn't asking me to give it another listen. 2.5/5
20% complete with the list and we’ve had repeats of multiple bands, like The Kinks, who are still as terrible on this as the last album we got by them. And still no Beatles! For the love of god, where are The Beatles??
An extremely well named album - I definitely wish this was Something Else by the Kinks.
No good at all. I didn't hate Love Me 'till the Sun Shines, the rest was pretty terrible.
It was pleasant enough but I don’t see myself revisiting songs beyond the delightful Waterloo sunset
A friend of mine introduced me to the Kinks a few years ago, and as is often the case, I became familiar with just one of their albums, which was "Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround." This album struck me as a bit more juvenile than that one, both in composition and production (although the version of LVPM I listened to was a 2020 remaster). I didn't sense as much uniqueness from this album though, but I did sense some British silliness and Beatles influence.
It's been kind of funny listening to The Kinks discography in reverse - makes me appreciate their musical growth from where they started (and thank goodness in my opinion for that growth). I really didn't connect with this album at all until the last song; most of this album feels like more of the same generic 60s pop that you could hear anywhere. But Waterloo Sunset is a fantastic song, and really highlights the direction The Kinks would be going with their sound

Even though I'm aware Ray Davies is a songwriting genius, Something Else feels like they just stretched the songlist way too thin, it's basically "Waterloo Sunset" and 12 filler songs. It has this cool 60s British invasion vibe, but a lot of it sounds like a cheap knockoff of The Beatles or The Beach Boys. Songs like "Harry Rag" and "Tin Soldier Man" are cute, but the sound is kinda muddy, and the mixing doesn't help them. The first and last tracks, "David Watts" and "Waterloo Sunset", are amazing, but the rest is a bit too granny pop (but not on the level of McCartney's granny music) for me. I get the storytelling and the band trying new things, but most of the songs don't have those killer riffs or go as deep as their other stuff. It's cool to hear, but if you've heard the few hits, you've heard the best of it.
Hoped for something great but got something mediocre at best. Nothing against these songs but they are just too inoffensive and have little to say musically or lyrically. Just not the best and a bit too vanilla for me. Still love The Kinks’ popular songs though.
I didn't mind it, nothing special, but listenable. Kind of a discount Beatles.
I've never really gotten in to The Kinks. This is the second album I've had from them in this project and whilst it is more consistent, it isn't particularly remarkable (aside from the closing track which I enjoyed a lot). Found myself a bit bored and often wishing I was listening to better albums from the period.
Music critics and my more snobby friends will try to convince you that The Kinks are great. They were prolific over the course of their career, so I don't deny they wrote the occasional banger (Waterloo Sunset and maybe David Watts, on this album for example), but I generally find it hard to enjoy an entire album's worth in one sitting. How to say, I'd rather listen to something else rather than Something Else by the Kinks? And to my friends, it's not that I just don't understand them and their charms — I see what the Kinks are up to with their jaunty music hall nostalgia but I'm not down.
Distinctly British, low-key.
Starts and ends great by there is a good reason I am not familiar with the rest of the LP. “Something else by the Kinks” Wish I was listening to “Anything else but the Kinks”
Not my kink.
Was meh
Overall decent vibes - a bit boring at times. First song and last song were the best and fell a bit flat after that
A couple of songs like Waterloo Sunset did a lot of the lifting.
Waterloo sunset is a lovely song but I found the rest of the album a bit twee and boring.
Never really go into The Kinks. This is an okay album, didn't really connect with me. Highlights: "Harry Rag" and "Waterloo Sunset"
It's obviously not bad music but it was a bit boring and not really my taste.
This just sucks no other way to describe it. Are the Kinks massively overrated? I’ve heard two of their albums so far and they’ve both sucked.
This was fine. Lots of shorter songs made this feel long. 2.5/5
Less interesting version of the Beatles
There was a kid I went to HS with named David Watts true story
The Good: We are going to get Kinky! The Bad: No, wait, we’ve been duped, it’s Something Else... The Ugly: Finding out that the something else isn’t good music… I will have to do my due diligence real fast… allow me a second… This is the third The Kinks album I’ve been presented… the THIRD. To make matters worse, and let me do my due diligence real fast… allow me a second… I am missing one more album as there are four… FOUR The Kinks albums on this list… Mr Dimery, you bastard! My review of this album? Well, sounds like something from the ‘60s. You can hear those sounds that were on many other albums from the ‘60s… and I am starting to hate the ‘60s almost as much as anything that has been published since the ‘00s The album was just a waste of time for me. It did make me go through some of my older albums that I still needed to rate, and made me enjoy some imperfect albums that had sounds I had not listened to before… I am looking at the album Tank Battles… you know what I mean! Anyway, I am nervous about what album I will get dished out today after ranking this album a 2*
Det är för jävla trist tyvärr.
