Reviews (page 13 of 13)

I just cannot get on board with new wave. There’s good bits here; some catchy hooks and elements of the lyrics but yet seen to fixate on a short refrain and just build a whole song around it, dripping with cheesy 80s production, tinny, uninspired guitars and drum machines and that vocal style, I just don’t get it. It’s weirdly over articulated and stuck up, while also being drenched in reverb and featuring needless vibrato. I just don’t get it.

I've definitely heard of Depeche Mode, but I had thought they sounded very different than this for some reason. It isn't really my jam. Solid album outside of that, though

+1 star for Personal Jesus/Enjoy the Silence. Otherwise just ok

I completely understand why this is so iconic. Sonically, it feels modern even though the album is older than me. This did not prevent me from hating it. Too spooky

I liked a few songs but wasn't my cup of tea. It ended up being a little too similar to me. I do think I'll revisit it.

I did not like this very much, it is not my type of music.

Dystopian

I wanted some new wave. I think there will be parts of it I like. I’ve heard some good stuff, but I rarely spend personal time listening to it. Not loving the vocals BUT the synth riff and electronic percussion is going pretty hard. Nice and dark. Drags a little too long which is my worry for this whole thing. I will give it a chance though. Decent song, albeit too long. Heavy bass. That’s sick. Oh no. The thug in me??? This sounds like a Disney song. Yeah this is a villain intro number. Ugh. Too long again and the vocals/lyrics are bad. Personal Jesus buddy. Good song already. Very popular, but I always liked the punk-ish energy this one provides. Very energetic in places with odd lyrical content. Anything that verges on the sacrilegious appeals to my dorky edgelord soul. Very good. Get E40 on the Halo beat, pronto. Right off of “In a Major Way.” This song is complicated as I really enjoyed it to start, but the increased presence of vocals turn this one towards the sewer. Eh. Not for me. Barebones in a boring way, and the vocals increase in their level of obnoxiousness. Too melancholy for me and not in a likeable or relateable way. The worst song by a mile thus far. Enjoy the silence. I mean hey, if you insist. Good French death metal album called “Enjoy the Violence,” so hopefully it’s similar. It is MUCH funkier. Fading FAST. I hate this. Better. A little bit more pop. I mean excitement, not the genre. Yeah this one has a drive that carries it through. The monotone vocals work better when they’re further back into the mix. Get that bass lunch up here. Good work. Boring. Long. Bad. Long again. Let’s wrap this up. The odd ending is a bright spot. Please end this. This is insufferable. There were some good songs, but this album felt like a pretentious goth guy showing you his apartment and somehow belittling you with every drawn out explanation. I liked the two that I did quite a bit, but a bunch of dumb lyrics droned out over music that seems like it would appeal to Dave Navarro exclusively made me feel nauseous and propels me that little bit further towards the conclusion that I do indeed hate music. 1.5-2 HIGHLIGHTS: Personal Jesus, Policy of Truth

Listened all the way thru and just couldn’t get into it at all

Aren't these supposed to be the top albums of all time? It must not be because otherwise this couldn't possibly make the list. Yes, there are two decent songs on the album but Johnny Cash did a vastly superior cover or Personal Jesus and Policy of Truth (like everything else Depeche Mode did) is basically soulless pop. It only warrants two stars because there are two singles on the disc.

Føles lidt som mere intens elevator musik...

It was kind of ok. Nothing bad, but nothing memorable either. Except for Enjoy The Silence, that one was fun. Most of it is just decent background music. Best song: Enjoy the Silence

Meh, 2.5

Previously rated: Music for the Masses (4/5) ***************************** I didn’t realize I already heard one of their albums until I looked it up. It was 300 albums ago. I’m surprised I gave it a 4 because I didn’t like this one at all. I even recognized 3 of the songs, 2 of those are decent. Everything else is so blah and boring. I wouldn’t want to sit through it all again. Favorite track: Policy of Truth

Kruder dorfmiester, silk purse sows ear

I don’t like electronic synth music, and I didn’t like this album. It was exactly what I thought it was going to be. Two stars.

Super dated.

Really not for me. Not the sort of thing that makes me excited to listen.

Meh. I really want to like Depeche Mode in general, but, well, meh. I don’t like the vocals, and whilst the instrumentation probably sounded incredibly fresh when the album came out, it doesn’t any longer. Just left me a bit cold in all honesty.

Dark mood throughout, cool 80's goth vibes. The standout track for me was the closing track Clean. Other than the 2 hits, this album is a bit of a snooze fest.

All in all, this album did not wow me. There were a couple cool and catchy tracks, and I was surprised by the chill ambience of the instrumental songs on the end of the album. But for the most part, the tracks were repetitive and did not do enough to really keep my attention. Depeche Mode seems to fall under the category of "not for me". Notable Tracks: - Sweetest Perfection - Personal Jesus 4/10

Some good (eg: Personal Jesus), some not (eg: Sweetest Perfection). Overall, dry.

Its alright but gets a little drab at points

There were a couple gems.

A couple good songs but mostly kind of boring. Am I a bad 80s music fan?

Not the worst thing to originate from Basildon, but not my cup of tea.

First Depeche Mode album I've ever listened to. Very New Wave/synth pop sound, not really my style but I can see why they're as popular as they are.

Didn't like them much in the 90s. Still don't. 5/10

Depeche Mode is not particularly enjoyable to listen to in my opinion

I thought I liked Depeche Mode. Turns out that I don't.

Could listen again but not for me

Never got the appeal of this album tbh.

Feels like the score for a musical. Couple good songs on there. But, my god, the sheer 80s of it all.

Wasnt vibing with it sry

An enjoyable enough ISH listen. I have always struggled to see the point of music like this, and this album does nothing to help me find it.

Enjoyed

Hey now hey now. This album was sort of boring I fear. Beep beep boop boop but evil.

Not my style...

A bit meh. Not my idea of a good time. I appreciate that the style was important in the great scheme of music.

Not really my thing

2/5. A few decent songs, but didn't interest me much overall.

Int helt min juttu... cool sound design men gilla int låtarna

I would rather Enjoy the Silence than listen to anything from this album again

Not exactly in my wheelhouse, but Personal Jesus is still a banger.

1.8 Headline "Like a hungry fish, Depeche Mode will not let go of a hook".

A good mix of a lil bo Burnham and a lil boss music soundtrack vibes. Would have to be in my villian era to give it a re-listen would give a 2.5 if I could

Some great moments, but not quite a 3.

Like if you made Disney music edgy

80s synth rock. Standard Depeche Mode.

Not for me

A nice 90s pop album

Depeche mode wasn't my cup of tea back in the 90s - and it hasn't changed yet

not for me

One or two good tracks, otherwise too 80s.

Just doesn't do it for me. Perfectly fine album, but dark synth pop is not my genre. Kinda boring.

I gotta buck the trend. I gather that DM was trailblazing emerging genres at this time, but it's just not a style that speaks to me. Biggest meh for me so far

Sounded like it was a low budget Nine Inch Nails done on a Casio keyboard. A couple of know tunes, but nothing I loved

Not for me thanking you kindly. Drab, monotone, 80’s synth misery.

I was under the impression I liked Depeche Mode. Judging by this album it's just the singles I like. Enjoy The Silence is a great song. Having said that, even Personal Jesus kinda annoyed me. Maybe it's the mood I'm in.

Not for me. Something about the vocals that big turn off. Their hits are ok with a little more upbeat vibes.

GTA and childhood.

Alright

I feel like no song was great on this but also no song was bad. More of a minimalist take on 80s music. Probably won’t ever listen to any of this again besides enjoy the silence. Strong 2

Two and a half good songs and the balance of the record is bad songs.

What is the opposite of nostalgia. That’s how I feel about this one. Hated it when I was younger still don’t like it. Album is emo yet mechanical

JJ loved one song. Star for that!

Industrial emo at its finest.

Synthesizer heavy music has a bit of a cap for me, but I can acknowledge that Depeche Mode is one of the best of the genre and as a result a lot of their catalogue is solid. At times it feels over long and repetitive, but that is just how the genre comes across to me in general so I think it could be a me thing. First half was solid, but it just trailed off too much for me to enjoy the whole thing. Highlights - World in My Eyes, Personal Jesus, Waiting for Night, Policy of Truth,

Was okay

Listening to this reminds me of looking at video footage of Richard Nixon. He was a real person, but he looks so much like a rubber mask of himself that it's difficult to take him seriously. I guess this is all fine, but it feels like DEPECHE MODE and all that it entails that I didn't connect with it at all.

I think one would really appreciate this in better context of the era. A few great songs, but mostly seems like it'd be interesting having not heard nearly as many of these sounds before, which in 2024, we have.

Not for me.

I kept forgetting it was on in the background while I did other things… Conflicted on a 2 vs 3 but since I tuned a lot of it out…

First impression - I definitely do not listen to music like this usually but I’m open to it! didnt even finish after listening to the first song lol

More like Depeche Chode

Dirge but with some good tunes

Was not a fan of this band in the 90s and still am mot

Kann man sich anhören.

Monotone, not interesting. Wouldn't keep me awake in a comfortable chair. A fine trait to have, but not what the artists where going for here. I can't appreciate the context of when this was released and how influential it was then. 4/10

There are no words for how overrated Depeche Mode are.

It's not necessarily a bad album but it is just very mild. There's nothing unique or transformational about it. The repetitive nature is prevalent throughout and even the beat is reproduced. This may be useful background music but too much of it may drive you slightly insane

I think they were going for "bleak and moody" with this production. Unfortunately, they only managed "sad and empty". I didn't enjoy... well, really anything about this one. The bloopy synths. The dry, emotionless performances. The lack of instrumentation... Just a waste of time.

The voice is just too much for more than one song at a time

i found the production to be pretty unappealing. i’m not big into techno/electronic stuff so that didn’t surprise me. the lyrics were really interesting and some were very impressive though.

Did not commit suicide after listening.

not my favorite

Not my thing

Highly un-enjoyable.

I didn’t mind it at first but at a certain point it felt like one song that never changed. Not really my style. Very 80s.

Alright. Sound like a friend of mines band.

Probably would have had more appreciation for it if I were on drugs.

Är de samma låt allihopa? Slutade lyssna på spår 11.

If the album had simply been Personal Jesus on repeat for 43 mins, I might have been tempted to give it 4 stars, but the rest of the songs are too repetitive and too long to earn anything above a 2 from me.

The 80s have just never really done it for me.

Liked personal jesus and enjoy the silence, which probably saved this from being a one, the rest were not great.

Absolutely hated Sweetest Perfection, there was a dissonance there that just didn’t work at all for me. Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence are both bangers but the rest was just a bit meh for me

I'm a certified Muso, but have never gotten it. Repetitive and one (maybe two) dimensional. Even at the time, there was more interesting stuff happening.

Not for me.

Meh album, not the biggest 80s fan Top tracks: Personal Jesu

Depeche Mode. A few chart hits one knows from the radio. Nothing unexpected discovered.

I didn't enjoy their music in the 80s and I still don't.

Don't care for this

Kinda got a bit bored with this one tbh. Personal Jesus obviously a banger.

The hits are great but I found the album tedious and boring overall.

Recognized 3 songs: Personal Jesus, Enjoy The Silence, Policy of Truth. Like the latter 2 but not enough to add to a playlist or consider relistening to the album.

3 songs with 4 different remixes each :/

Too slow and ambient. Was too sleepy.

Didn't care for it. I can't article why, but it didn't grab me on any level.

Started of pretty well, but then just ended up being kind of boring. Just the same "sound" repeated every song, with rather mediocre lyrics. Significant 16/42 Liked 7/42 Added 1/42 Not significant, didnt like (overall), didnt add

Kind of strange industrial pop music. Not really my kind of thing. 2/5 Probably won’t listen again

not my thing

A dark synth pop album was a bit interesting to begin with, but really nothing that captured my attention in the end.

Liked a couple

Okay not great

Love Enjoy the silence - is in Vampires diaries

This album has been failing to arouse the slightest emotion in me for 30 years now. Spectacularly dull.

Couple of memorable songs but some of the sounds were a bit dated. I didn’t really like it overall.

Maybe the most overrated band that appears in this book. I never got Depeche Mode and I still don't get Depeche Mode.

I don't think I hated this as much as everyone else but it's definitely a one and done

Pretty boring apart from the singles

This music was different, but entertaining. It makes for fine background music, but not something I would put on a playlist.

Did not enjoy

Very unique sound. One that I like? ...not really. The vampy, theatrical aesthetic is not for me. I feel like this is what the goth kids of the 90s were listening to. Every other song was good enough to persuade me to give a 2, but then the next song would feel like it was just clamoring for a 1. I'm going w/a 2 for now bc I know worse albums will be on here, and I could at least sing along to some of it. Everything about it was just way too long though. Every song and the album as a whole.

The songs that I did find interesting didn’t hold my attention. Prefer Bo Burnham any day

Going to be honest, it just didn't do anything for me. I didn't feel anything either way towards this album.

two nice tracks, other than that just synth crap

‘World In My Eyes’ is a strong opener, Enjoy The Silence’ is the best song New Order never wrote, (in fact for many years I thought it was by them), and ‘Policy Of Truth’ is also great. I find the rest of the album middling, and much of the production feels like it lacks depth and melody. It just struggles to hold my attention for long parts.

I think as far as 80s synth music (I know this is 1990) goes, you can do a lot worse than Depeche Mode. This album has a couple super well known singles on it and the rest of the album is good enough. No issues with this like I do a lot of similar music.

Personal Jesus, Enjoy The Silence, Policy of Truth, 2/5

The album is too "electronic" for me, and many of the songs are "dark" and a bit monotonous.

Carried hard by Personal Jesus

What the hell happened at the end of this lol I can understand why it's included, it's quite unique, and not bad, but it doesn't do too much more than that for me.

DNF for me…..got to song 5 and I just know this is an album I’ll never go back to. Just not my style.

it was all right, some decent songs but mostly boring droning

dude I loved the part when they said I'm going depeche mode and depeched everywhere. best tracks: world in my eyes, enjoy the silence, personal jesus

It Is OK but not my Favourite DP Album I prefer the first Album.

Honestly didn't really grasp me that much. recognised some from radio, but won't come back to it.

Paar classics, aber auch viel filler. Musst schon zugedröhnt in den 90ern sein um es vollends zu appreciaten achso halt bin ich doch

Quite surprised by this. Heard little bits of Depeche Mode before but nothing much so I was keen to give this a whirl. The opening few tracks were about as bad as I’ve heard on this list, and on a whole the album just sounded a bit dull and boring, and bordering on the self indulgent at times. Definitely saved by the singles, and I’m certain they have better albums than this. Was expecting more

they can do atmosphere but they’re weak on tunes and the tone is just too faux-grave for me

A lot of people must be influenced by their nostalgia when rating this. Very boring except a couple of songs.

I have never previously streamed Depeche Mode! I'm sure fans love this album. It's just not my thing.

This wasn't for me. It was based around the synth way too much and did not have enough non-synth instruments to balance it out well.

Not very interesting to me. A few songs that I recognize but overall not a striking album. 2 stars

Not my thing

Too depressing for me

that one song and a couple others are decent

Didn’t really enjoy this type of electronic, moody music

Ik had hier veel zin in, maar het viel me wat tegen eigenlijk.

Fine album just not my jam.

- Für elektronische Musik bestimmt ein Meilenstein, finde es aber eher langweilig.

Has electronica aged so poorly? What was considered fresh and novel when it came out seems stale today. A few songs from the album still manage to excite, but overall it doesn’t move me.

I thought it was ok. Definitely interesting and forward thinking for 1990. If this came out today, I'm not sure I would be impressed. I never really found much melody, so I probably won't return to it.

Boring as at the time

This shat is boring 3 2

One of my least favorite bands ever, but I've got to give credit where credit is due. That credit goes to David Gahan who's the owner of the most bloated, pompous drivel-y sounding person I've ever heard and the real reason that Depeche Mode sucks. I might as well just listen to Sebastian Gorka on Fox News for 47 mins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glK4D7-533I https://www.foxnews.com/video/5984411495001 It's terrible because the music behind this blowhard is actually decent.

The lyrics of this album are awful. The music is meh but the beats are repetitive enough that I found myself unconsciously tapping my toe so I guess that is something.

Too robot like

Personal Jesus is good, left me cold otherwise. Will maybe revisit in the future.

There's a reason you only hear the singles from this one on 90s radio. All of the good melodic ideas and pacing are expended on these 3-4 tracks, leaving the rest of the LP a plodding mess of half-baked synth ideas. While certain songs shine and maintain a strong foothold in memory, the shambling remainder means the whole album feels wildly inconsistent.

I appreciate depeche mode but their sound isn't something I would listen to regularly.

Still just not my type of music. I can see it being good to some people its just not my favorite. Favorite album so far has been Straight Out of Compton and that's not even my genre usually. I hope it gives me better albums soon because I'm not liking most of them so far.

Not for me. Very 80s, with lyrics about nuclear war and drug addiction, and with over the top production that doesn't really benefit the songs. Personal Jesus is pretty good, although I like Johnny Cash's version better, but one of the later tracks sounds like a phone ring tone

Tem duas grandes músicas que funcionam bem demais em outras versões, boas camadas de elementos sintéticos, só não empolga pelos vocais.

So many quality pieces in this...why don't they sound better?

Not nearly as cool as New Order, but not terrible. I could get down to this if I was a moody 80s teen.

Some bangers, some droning, some ok

electronic rock ain't for me still

Just didn't get into this one at all. Never a fan of Depeche Mode but figured why not. Confirmed my distaste for this band.

not vibing butttt alright

Didn’t love it but respected the direction

Yeah it was ok, Personal Jesus rocks it, But the rest is meh 4/10

I don't like Depeche Mode. A generous 2 as some of the instrumental bits were interesting

I am not a big Depeche Mode fan. There were known songs on this album. The album has some of the snythesizer sound of the 80s but I just don't find it entertaining. Thankfully it was not that long of an album.

Jäi kesken kuuntelu eikä mikään oikeen innosta kuunnella loppuun valitettavasti. Depechen tyyli lähinnä ärsyttää mua, mut ei se silkkaa paskaa ole

i think a lot of the songs were very repetitive and annoying. it just wasn’t really my vibe and i wouldn’t listen to it again.

Really didn’t feel like listening to an hour of this. It sounded alright, but really not my style.

Listenable. Not a favourite

Not really a fan of this guy's voice and the whole angsty electronica from the 80's genre. Album got a lot better in the middle when it was just instrumentals, however and I probably would have enjoyed it more as an instrumental soundtrack to a bad 80s scifi action movie.

I want to like it. But it’s like new order without any of the urgency or excitement. Had some ok songs (Enjoy the Silence) but the rest are largely forgettable.

Not much to write home about. A kinda boring synth-pop kinda thing. Not my style, never been a fan of Depeche Mode, but this hasn’t converted me

Meh, it's ok, it's not reallllly my thing.

This is not really my kind of music, but there are melody's and sounds I do kind of vibe to. I like the funky degree the album has. The music also gives of some spooky vibes

I wanted to like this more, I thought I would. It gets a bit samey over the whole album, though there are a couple of good tracks. I like Depeche Mode, I'm glad they exist, getting through a whole album like this is a little like hard work though. They're so very mood-altering, draping everything in a dystopian melancholia that isn't that welcome right now.

80's sounding album. 2RS

Not sure what all the fuss is about.

apart from the 2 obvious bangers on this album I find the rest to be droney and yawnsome

Gute teils sehr gute Songs dabei. 2.3

Dark synth pop, mood music

I was never a big Depeche Mode fan, and it seems I'm still not. There were a few songs on this that I didn't hate, but overall just not my thing. 2.5 stars.

Not my favorite but it has some great iconic songs on it.

I wanted to like this more, I thought I would. It gets a bit samey over the whole album, though there are a couple of good tracks. I like Depeche Mode, I'm glad they exist, getting through a whole album like this is a little like hard work though. They're so very mood altering, draping everything in a dystopian melancholia that isn't that welcome right now.

ok to decent 80s stuff

Elektronisk, lange numre, hypnotiserende

I've never really listened to depeche mode but I know they're one of those groups with a cult following. Problem is those "cultists" are always people who say things like "oh I don't just listen to <metal subgenre>, I also like depeche mode and skinny puppy..." as if you're really stretching your musical legs branching out to the sisters of mercy, lol. Anyway this sounds like EBM with a bit more going on, like if EBM is the reinheitsgebot of electronic music, depeche mode isn't quite a craft beer, but also isn't a macrobrew - maybe something like coopers? I can't honestly say this album belongs on any list of must-hears. It just exists. I wouldn't say it sucks, but it doesn't go anywhere, there's no spark (even if that's kinda what they aim for?), no real bits that make me sit up and go "wow!". 2/5. Extra note: the song personal jesus is familiar. But like only the chorus, and then it must be from a cover? I'm sure I've never heard this original.

Too si fi edm

Really brutal listen.

Otroligt svårt för den monotona sången och tonen. Gick inte att ta sig igenom.

what i expected, but didn't know that i'd know so many songs. not fun. not enjoyable. a challenge to finish.

Diarrhea beats. Only 2 goods songs and they're overplayed.

I just don't think that I like Depeche Mode

Its okay but overall quite boring and non memorable.

Notable Textzeile: Something so worthless Serves a purpose […] Can't you understand?

Schauderlich

Una poronga el álbum, perdonen mí vocabularios

Never understood the appeal of this band. The one half decent song is only memorable because of the Johnny Cash cover.

la única canción q me gustó fue enjoy the silence, las demás no son mi vibra y no me gusta como canta el chico

meh. idek how to describe this but i dont want to relisten

He keeps sounding like Bo Burnham and I start laughing.

I've never liked Depeche Mode. Listening to this entire album did not change my opinion.

I've never cared for these guys and after this I still don't.

Too synthy for my liking. Yes ‘Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence’ are at the better end of the DM scale but that is not enough to lift this. Waiting for the night to fall sounds like a ringtone. Policy of Truth is not as good as i remember and sounds exceptionally dated. World I'm my Eyes is frankly abysmal and ensures the album closes on the lowest possible note. I think this is probably a 1.5/5 for me but will have to settle as a one as the two tracks just aren’t enough to lift this from the slums

é ruin não consegui acabar

I definitely still don’t like this 80s goth synth pop. It’s just jangled noise. The first song is solid, but everything after is just not good

Not my thing.

ไม่ชอบเพราะดู futuristic

Not good

I almost rated this a do not listen since I skipped a couple songs, but “Waiting For the Night” grabbed me so I ended up finishing it. I deeply despise Depeche Mode. The vocals are bad, many of the songs are too all over the place and over the top. But I like some of the quieter, simplistic moments like “Waiting For the Night.” I think actually I just liked that song.

World in my eyes - felt like a song that would play when a creepy, pedo villian is chasing me in a club. Sweetest Perfection - Thug in me I can’t finish this

i think it’d be perfect for like a movie or series soundtrack, i don’t think i would listen to it everyday.

1/5 not my cup of tea stale

KROQ killed all love anyone could have for this record. In Los Angeles for a period this disco record was all you could hear every fucking day for several years. I stopped listening to radio. The direct blame for my switching off radio is in large part to my absolute loathing of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are without a doubt the worst fucking band in the history of rock music joining the Eagles and the Journey/Styx/Nickleback tie for 3rd. Depeche Mode sits comfortably 4th. This is just a loathsome record. If you tried you couldn’t come up with a more bland album that sold millions. This is dance music for dead people. The dead don’t move and neither does this record. Really, take The Sweetest Perfection with its repetive nonsense. It is easy to see why the suckers fell for the disco beat of Enjoy The Silence and Personal Jesus. Policy of Truth is passable it not enough to redeem a fairly dull affair. Clean, apparently about getting “clean” is 5:00 minutes of whining. The biggest problem with the record, as I try to reflect how anyone could have chosen to include this record on the list, is that Depeche Mode was mining the same territory as Frankie Goes To Hollywood, without the humor. This is dour music for wannabe goths who thought the Cure weren’t poppy enough. What the fuck is Blue Dress. I guess it’s an effort to be less self—involved, or maybe not. It turns out that Depeche Mode is a group of plastic people singing about nothing, really. Someone described Depeche Mode as synth-pop with emotional depth. My ass it is. I felt violated by having to listen to this record.

Very monotonous and not something I would usually listen to.

I like Personal Jesus, but otherwise, no thank you.

Mid 1 tuneless vocals, undanceable groves. doesnt even appeal in a retro synth way

The singles "personal jesus" and "enjoy the silence" are excellent 35 years on. The rest of the album is just plinky plonky nonsense and actually annoying at times. Depeche mode very much a singles band.

New Wave has had its day, but that day is gone. Deep voiced electronic nonsense.

Really don’t see what the fuss is about depeche mode- I always had a feeling I should stay away and I was right.

Dull, monotone. Not for me

Not really my cup of tea.

Not really a fan of this type of music.

Ik enjoyde de silence toen het album voorbij was. Niet mijn ding

Nothing for me here. 1 star.

Unlistenable

didn't like it, didn't fit my mood on a beautiful spring day. (didn't finish listening)

Cannot listen to a whole album with that much synthesizer. 🤢

Only liked enjoy the silence

Don't like this band

Who tf made this list

Sure sh*te. Personal Jesus the only track worth listening to.

Snoozefest. Boring as fuck. Zero out of ten.

Weird 80s shit no one likes

My instant thought, 2 seconds in, was ‘no’. That thought remained throughout. Couldn’t wait for it to end.

I couldn’t get over the lead singer’s voice. Somehow throaty and nasally at the same time. It kinda has that British sound to it too. Just made the album so jarring. I can’t say I liked a single song. I think if you put a different vocalist this might be a 3 star, but it was so unlistenable I have to give it a 1.

1/15 songs added to playlist Best song: Enjoy the Silence Not my kind of music, I guess. But don’t really see how anyone would enjoy this. Oh well

I liked them with Vince but they then went transatlantic to fluff the Yanks and it went downhill from there. Clean sterilised pop synths pretending to be dark and 'alternative'. There are acouple of reasonable pop songs on here but it's dreadfully mediocre otherwise. A case in point is 'Policy of Truth' with 116 million listens on Spotify. It's so dull and uninspiring.

I don't like depeche mode.

Bad. Moving on.

I've already reviewed one Depeche Mode album. Isn't that enough? Dross

Policy of Truth isn't bad. The rest felt extremely bland. I recognized Personal Jesus, but this version is significantly worse than the radio hit we are all familiar with.

Hated them back in the day but decided to give them another try. Still hate them.

Hate these guys

- nah this isn’t for me - industrial - don’t like the vibes

Was I a Depeche Mode fan before listening to "Violator"? No. Am I a Depeche Mode fan after listening to "Violator"? Also, no. Emphatically, no. The only acceptable purpose for the existence of this album is as a method of contraception. Nobody is getting the horn listening to this goofy shite. Embarrassing music supporting a truly terrible singer. Just awful. Shit band all round. The only quasi bearable tune is "Personal Jesus", and that's because Johnny Cash's cover gave it a little clout. The feature track on this album is called "Enjoy the Silence", which is exactly where my head was at when this fuckin' cringe was finally over. 👎👎

I really don't like this band. It's just so boring and feels like it's trying hard to be moody.

I got 2/3 of the way through this album and did not enjoy a single song. 80's music like this just isn't for me. I give it 2 out of 10 personally.

That sucks soooo bad.

Enjoy the Silence is an alright tune, which is apt considering I'd find more enjoyment in 47-minutes of silence than listening to this album again.

Just not good. Uninteresting. The best part was when it ended.

Music For The Masses was the second album I received when I started on this journey. It was also the first album I rated one star. And in some way I’ve been waiting for this day to come ever since. Violator, the other Depeche Mode album. The opportunity to prove me wrong, or to confirm my suspicions. I do not like Depeche Mode. Their music is consistently both incredibly overwrought and abysmally dreary. Violator is supposed to have taken a break from their usual writing style but that doesn’t come through because it sounds exactly the same as Music For The Masses, same dull electronics, same boring string quartet droning the same few trills midway through the song, same boring lyrics that just repeats the one verse over and over again. Fucking hell. I really can’t stand it. Even the ‘good songs:’ Personal Jesus and Enjoy The Silence have been both played to death and done better by other people. So… I am not going crazy. I do not like this band. What I’m now left to go crazy over is why you fuckers do like them so much

Didn't like it at all. Even skipped some songs.

I really don’t like this band lol

Boring as fuck. Had one nice song and I guess made a song I like covered by someone else.

Very sleepy album probably good for background noise but that's about it. Only one good song and it's the bands best one "enjoy the silence"

Not ideal

There's a famine in my heart to hear something else.

Couldn't get past the second song. Just not for me sorry.

1/5. Just awful. An abomination of an album. I cannot believe 90s kids enjoyed this New Wave garbage. I skipped many songs half way through and funny enough, enjoyed one of the bonus tracks better than any song on the actual album!

I'm starting to think that they wasted a lot of these slots. I know 1001 Albums seems like a lot but you can't pick every album from every band ever and I'm sure some real classics are left out for Albums like this. It's both annoying AND boring which is interesting because usually it's one or the other so good job. I find it annoying because the Instrumentation is fucking nails on a chalkboard and boring because the vocalist can only really sing in the droning dull kinda way. I don't know who this music is for but I'm glad I don't know them.

Another Depeche Mode album that leaves me not wanting to listen to them. This is worse than the others, 1.

So boring has aged badly

Overall, did not enjoy this album. Riffs and melodies were repetitive. I did like Clean because it felt authentically moody and brooding.

Not into this kind of music at all

It's ok for a long drive, otherwise, I would not listen.

Boring album. Only enjoy the silence was worth listening.

Not really a fan of the poppy sound. Would have to really check it out when I am not busy.
