Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Classic pop. Some strange songs on here, but all enjoyable.
Let me get this straight - Madonna collaborated with PRINCE for one of the songs on this album, and THEY DIDN'T RELEASE THAT AS A SINGLE?
кроме известных ничего не ухватило (конечно, за три раза-то); очередные ревелейшны про каверы; вокалист она не особо
My parents weren't big Madonna fans so I know next to nothing about her discography. Maybe I'm a liar and actually knew more Madonna than I previously thought. My favorite song on this album is Till Death Do Us Part by far. I thought it was something a little different from her style and it honestly reminded me more of Pat Benatar but I really enjoyed it!
Average. Not my genre, but not terrible
Title track is great of course. Some songs pop songs but her singing doesn’t really do anything for me. The prince contributions are probably my favorite part. 3
Really tough to rate. Started off hot with like a prayer, and I love the prince contribution. “Promise to try” was pretty torturous, then dear Jessie was pretty awful too, although the ending was kind of cool. and the ballad after that was miserable. But then keep it together was sick! Spanish eyes was weird but points for castanets. Last song was pure prince. Emotional rollercoaster here but I guess 3? I kind of think the bad outweighed the good on this album for me though
This is fine. The songs start to blend together. The hits great.
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: Yeah, just wish it kept the same vibe from the opening and seems to calm don rather quickly which makes it drag a little to the finish Favourite song: Track 1 - Like A Prayer
Already knew some of these songs and “Till Death Do Us Part” was a good new find. I probably won’t come back to this one but I enjoyed it for what it was
Strong start and finish. Lots of slow, 80s ballads in the middle that were a little touch for me. 3.5
I’ve never listened to Madonna before outside of hearing her in malls in the 90s and on MTV in the early 2000s. Starting off I do wish the drums were a little punchier on Like A Prayer and Express Yourself they seem so timid. Nervously placed in the background. Once the slow moving hits on Love Song pop in you hear what sounds like completely different production style. Likely due to the difference between club bangers and deeper cuts. I won’t pretend I know what I’m talking about. There is some incredible instrumentation on this album. The string arrangements are beautiful. All of the funky gits and synths stood out on the tracks more than Madonna herself at some points. Personally I’ll give this a 3 but I totally understand why this is on the list. Individual song notes below: Love the gospel bit of Like A Prayer. A very epic opener to the album. Although, in a way it feels like I just walked into the middle of a conversation. Love Song is an excellent duet between some of the greatest to do it. As mentioned in my overview, I loved the production on this track. Let’s see if it is a total standout from the rest of the album. My favorite part is when madonna says kiss me in French and Prince goes “what?” Till Death Do Us Part has SO much cool shit going on. Funky clavs, wild synth, epic. Not to mention Madonna’s personal lyrics about her and Sean Penn’s seemingly very toxic relationship. Dude seems to have a serious anger problem. Really enjoyed this one from start to finish. Promise To Try sounds like a live performance. Very raw. Heavy track. Very cinematic. Beautiful cello solo. Cherish has this line “Romeo and Juliet they never felt this way I bet” and I just loved the delivery of it. Otherwise I couldn’t really get into this track. It was kind of just ok. Love the chorus-y guitars on Dear Jessie but holy moly the rest of the song is a little too musical theater-y for me. Oh Father is another very personal track. I hear where Beach House could’ve been inspired in the chorus with Madonna’s delivery of “you can’t hurt me now”. Wonderful slidy guitars on the outro. I love how Madonna turns it around lyrically with empathy towards the end. Keep It Together is for sure my favorite single out of the lot. It’s groovy, funky. Madonna has some excellent lyrical flow that is just so easy to bob your head to. Little sine-y bleeps on the final verse made me say wow. Madonna’s voice on the chorus of Pray For Spanish Eyes is so so great. I love the subtle crunchiness. Easily the best example of her voice on this album. It’s so raw, almost grungey. I don’t know what other word to use but damn she is going for it. I wish I understood Act of Contrition. It’s a little chaotic and seems unfinished. Reminds me of one of those tracks that starts way way after a CD ends but then boom hidden track. Weird.
I am really ignorant when it comes to some pop music. Typically it just goes in one ear and out some other. White noise. For instance, the only time I can consciously remember having heard “Like A Prayer”—a song I’m sure I’ve heard hundreds of times and just not realized it—was at a karaoke night a few weekends ago. I remember all the women in the establishment hitting every note, while I couldn’t fathom a single melody or even tell you it was by Madonna. Then the guy standing next to me turned and yelled at his belting-along girlfriend, “Is this just about a blowjob!?” To which she responded, “Yes!!” And continued to sing. Any pop super-hit circa 1989 about a blow job is pretty cool in my book. Makes me kind of miss the days when sexually innuendo in song was wrapped in double entendres and metaphors. Not that I don’t like “W.A.P” and such. Just different. And this song is really quite good. Same goes for “Express Yourself.” Can’t tell you I’ve ever actually listened to this song, though, again, I’m sure I’ve unconsciously heard it hundreds of times. But that’s kind of a strength here as I don’t have any baggage associated with Madonna, this album, or this style of music. (For reference: I was born in 1993.) I find this song to be bright and cheery. Reminds me hugely of stuff the B-52s were doing at the time (I actually checked to see if the deep backing vocals were the work of Fred Schneider; they weren’t). And of that last gasp of the chipper, bright, and grossly-colorful 80s, before Nirvana came on the scene and changed alt/pop rock forever. I know this Madonna album is decidedly a pop album and not rock. BUT, it really does not sound too different from rock acts of the day. There’s Bowie and Talking Heads and R.E.M. all over this record. I mean, hell, Prince makes an appearance in what is just an insanely weird cut for a pop song. Kinda great minimalist, funk/R&B infused instrumentation on that number. And the personnel on this album, everywhere, is just a who’s who of pre-eminent rock session musicians. The whole project is bursting with talent. Weird to have “A Digital Recording” printed right on the album art, like that was some sort of selling point in 1989? I appreciate the Sticky Fingers reference of the cover image, and the political, feminist use of it by Madonna which pairs well with her boundary-pushing sex positivity that is really on full display on this record. It’s kind of punk rock. And taken as a whole, it’s that sentiment that probably represents her greatest cultural influence as an artist. This is at least as good as that Queen record we did yesterday. In fact, it’s better. On first listen, I thought the second half of this album got a little limp…but boy, nope, turns out Madonna knows how to sing some serious ear worms and each time I listened to those later tracks they got better and better. In fact, “Cherish” is probably my favorite track on the record right now and it’s going in my playlist rotation right behind “Killer Queen,” from yesterday. I’m very tempted to give this album a 4. But I won’t. Just know that it’s close!
This album is basically impossible to review. I've turned it over a dozen times in my head, in the last week. Did I enjoy listening to it? Almost universally no. Pretty much anything in this corner of pop, anything ABBA-adjacent is baseline annoying to me. But then...! You go into the history behind this record. Madonna's intentions, to make an album about forgiveness, atonement. A reckoning with her Catholic upbringing. The last song ("Act of Contrition,"), with the backwards music, where she realizes all the platitudes, the posturing toward God doesn't get her into heaven. I mean... that's an Extremely Good premise for a record. The parts that are darker, more moody... I like those parts. I like how human Madonna feels on some of these records. I like Prince's guitar playing, I like his duet. Can this record pull itself from under all the cheesy 80's production, all the misguided choices? I am completely unsure. I'm not gonna lie that I thought about this record a lot. Even if it's not to my taste, I have to give Madonna credit... there's a lot of ambition here. 3/5
The songs everyone knows on this album are absolute bangers but the rest of the project is solid as well. Some songs go on for too long, some could just be better, and the album as a whole could have more tracks total. Enjoyed jamming this thing out but it’s really rough around the edges. Worth the listen!
Hit after hit. Definitely a fun listen, trails off to more ballads towards the end
Madonna hit machine but a lot of misses on this album. Too many hair-tossing sobbing numbers in minor keys like the title song and Papa Don't Preach. Go deeper and you find Love Parade which is excellent, with a strange almost Brian Wilson texture and production to it - I could listen to it all day. Best song in her typical style is Cherish.
Surprised by how many songs I already knew!
Not really my jam except for the Prince duet
Enjoyable if not wholly original disposable 80s pop. I think Madonna is underrated nowadays, and I think younger people don't really get just how massive she was. But also it's just fine. She ain't reinventing the wheel here.
Great players on this one.
Very familiar with Madonna's hits, but not much else. Like a Prayer is Madonna's 4th studio album. This is said to have been a confessional record. It contains songs about her parents, and bonds with her family members. A lot of controversy surrounded the music video for Like a Prayer. The video shows Madonna dancing in front of burning crosses, and making out with Jesus. All that said, one can not take away the fact that Like a Prayer is a phenomenal pop hit that has stood the test of time! Express Yourself is another phenomenal hit. Madonna called on the amazing musicianship of Prince on this album a few times. They duetted in the song Love Song, and Prince also played guitar for the strange album closer, Act of Contrition. Overall, a good album, not something I would revisit a lot, but I can see how it deserves to be on this list for its influence on pop music. Favourite songs: Express Yourself, Like a Prayer, Love Song Least favourite song: Promise to Try 3/5
I knew the album from before, there is only a couple of songs I liked from it but it is solid since prince plays the guitar in some pieces.
Classic Madonna, took me back to my childhood listening to 80s music
Wow! Was really looking forward to this album and then I listened to it. Ugh, I'm not sure why. Still, Cherish and Express Yourself are straight up guilty pleasures.
Our first Madonna album I think, though not sure if we will see any others. This one is usually her most acclaimed. Like a Prayer is a classic and I really liked Cherish as well. I know I’ve heard that a few times before. I can imagine young people growing up when this album coming out and having it change their life, but not so much now. Many of the songs didn’t really pop for me, and some felt too long and repetitive. But overall a good album for this list.
It was only a matter of time until we got Madonna. I know she's a big deal but I really don't know much of her music, so this is a welcome exercise. The album opens strong with the title track, one of the few Madonna songs I do know, and after that it was a mixed bag in more ways than one. It's obviously pop music, but there's a wide range of sonic influences at play, leading to mixed results. Only a couple other tracks that I'd save, even though I do think it's an interesting pop album as a whole. Hard for me to see the fuss in retrospect, but maybe there are bigger Madonna projects awaiting us? Favorite tracks: Like a Prayer, Love Song, Oh Father. Album art: What would be called "midriff" by people seeking to have it covered up. Some antique old lady looking jewelry hanging over (I assume) Madonna's waist. It's a little saucy but only by suggestion. Not a bad cover, her logo in the center is pretty cool. 3/5
The singles are great, but the rest of the album was meh. Wonder if I only liked the singles since you hear them constantly. I should probably give it another chance since it started off so great
Some great songs, but as usual Madonna's voice is somewhat lacking
I've never listened to one of her albums. The title track is brilliant. Otherwise there are some catchy hits but it suffers from that bright/big drum 80s production which I really dislike and often whinge about. 80s albums average under 3 in my rankings. It's a shame as I always think of the 80s as a golden age of pop. 3 (It would have been a 2 without the title track)
It's a classic. My dad heard "like a prayer" from the other room and immediately started singing so yeah. It's a good album, not all songs are in my opinion good but still, I would probably listen to it again.
Like a Prayer is the lead single, and its the peak of 80s cheese synth. Cherish is also in that same vein. Honestly, this is a summer bubblegum album. Listening to it in winter seems a little wistful and not quite appropriate. Spanish Eyes kinda sucks. Summer I could see this being a 4. winter its a meh.
Really carried by the strength of Like a Prayer and Express yourself, the rest is not good or vital.
This is Madonna being more introspective and sensitive. Still very 80's and is ok as it goes but a bit bland. No real cutting edge but then it is pop.
Thats a surprise, some variety to my last days. And it's welcome
I actually like some of her stuff.
Starts off strong. Is let down a little by the end. Couple of the songs are really catchy. Like a prayer and express yourself are a mean 1-2 punch
good
Like a prayer, express yourself and cherish were big hits at the time. Madonna was huge in the 80s, I've heard this album many times. Overall it wasn't bad, some songs still hold up as good pop music
Some good songs
Not my favorite of hers, but it's great
A couple of great songs on this album. Mostly cheesy generic pop though. I'd only ever listen to the hits on purpose. 3.5 stars
Not her best but it's decent
I hate Madonna so much. But, she's an icon and ONE of her albums should definitely be on this list for posterity's sake. That ONE album should be this one. It's Madonna in her prime (not teeny-bopper Madonna or old, washed-up Madonna). Giving it a one-star bump out of respect, but it's a 2 at best.
I've never heard this album in full. Like a prayer has always been a bop, express yourself is great and tbh i definitely hear the argument that born this way was influenced by this. like at minimum was influenced. i like the production on till death do us part. cherish starts out great, im boppin my head. oh i have heard this song before i think. it's long though.
Tracks 1. Know this, it goes hard lol 2. Never heard it but its decent ok my attention span left chat
eh
Love the title track. Rest is solid pop, but not really anything I want to listen to. Mostly a 2, “Like a Prayer” is a 4+
Comparativement à Ray of Ligth c'est un super Album. Je vois l'influence de Prince. Cependant, ca tombe un peu à plat pour la deuxième partie de l'album, car ca commence vraiment fort. C'est pour ca ue la note glisse un peu sous 4, et aussi parce que c'est vraiment pas mon style. 3.5
Meh
good classics
The singles are some of Madonna's best but the rest of the album is a bit of a mess and average at best
6/10. Like a Prayer is a fun song, but the album as a whole was a little underwhelming for me
Ehh couple of good tracks rest didn’t click
Oh god, my 13 year old sister is back. Goddamn if this didn't age really well. Catchy, well produced (maybe over produced). The big top 40 hits hit the memberberries better than the lesser-known tracks. Still a pretty neat listen.
Ha ja niet mijn ding, maar wel leuk om een keertje te luisteren, kende die oude muziek van haar niet.
3/5 Pretty good. Some good beats and hooks, but I wasn’t crazy in love with it or anything.
Good, but not my cup of tea.
Classic 80’s pop
Some of these songs are great, some just feel like they're trying to claw for the pop charts.
Brings me back to my childhood. "Love Song" with Prince was a pleasant surprise. Only knew the radio/MTV hits before, and of course those are the ones that resonate with me most due to nostalgia. Feel like the album loses steam halfway through. Nothing could really hold my attention after "Cherish."
Was hoping for more interesting genre-defining 80s pop but I feel like this album doesn't have much to add to her already existing catalog.
Good album. Some notable hits and some strange tracks that I couldn’t jive with. Good listen none-the-less.
A decent pop album with a couple of good songs, but no more than that. Actually found the vocals to be rather weak on this.
Iconisch album maar niet mijn genre
I didn't get to do a proper sit down and listen in one chunk but there were some good bops on here :)
It's fascinating how fresh some of the songs sound but the album as a whole is dated to the 80s
I never listened to much Madonna before but had vague memories of her being considered risque and controversial. I was surprised how much of the lyrical content was positive, empowering, and wholesome. Not nearly as bad of a listen as I was expecting. "Like a Prayer" and "Cherish" were standouts for me. I doubt I'd ever call myself a fan, but her status as the Queen of Pop is obviously warranted.
Who doesn't know Madonna? While I am not a pop music fan, this album shows why Madonna's music has been a mainstay in this genre. Some good tracks here, but I can't see myself going out of my way for another listen.
I respect Madonna's fame and notoriety as a musician and her impact on music as a whole will last forever. I just do not enjoy most of her music past her hits. It is just not my type of music and most of it is just meh. She gets a 3 instead of a 2 just because of her impact on music.
Surprisingly, the title track was the only song I was familiar with from this album before today. I really enjoy a lot of popular artists from the 80s, but Madonna's style of pop doesn't really do it for me. Songs like "Express Yourself", "Love Song", "Promise to Try" and "Cherish" just sound outdated and cliché to my ears in 2022. On the plus side, "Like a Prayer" deserves the hype and remains a powerful opener three decades later. I was also pleasantly surprised by "Till Death Do Us Part" and "Pray for Spanish Eyes". I'm a sucker for emotional/epic tracks with violins, so I enjoyed "Dear Jessie" and "Oh Father" much more than I probably should have. "Act of Contrition" was a very unexpected, but unfortunately uninteresting closer. Standout tracks: Like a Prayer, Till Death Do Us Part, Dear Jessie, Oh Father, Pray for Spanish Eyes
its groovy it feels VERY 80s (not a bad thing) i can for sure see the influences in later music from this album the first few songs are pretty good, second half not so much 5/10
A great 80s pop album and one of , if not Madonna's best. I always though of Madonna as a singles artist as opposed to an album artist. She tries to put together a complete album here, but misses the mark by a bit (compare it to George Michael's Faith, for example). Like a Prayer and Express Yourself are terrific 80s tunes though. The production is good, but not great. Some tracks, such as Like a Prayer are much better in their single mix.
Starts very strong with 2 really good songs. If you told me the third one was by Prince I would believe it. The rest is good pop music. She could have been a great rock singer but I guess this is where the money was.
An EP of the best songs on here would have gotten a 5 from me but there’s just too much filler. The title track is the clear standout for me but Express Yourself and Pray for Spanish Eyes were also great. The duet with Prince was a fun surprise too. Since Madonna is only an ok singer for me the instrumentation was major in whether I liked a song or not and there were more I found “meh” than great. Would give a 3.5 if possible.
Like a good collection of songs should be.
Meh
Is it a strong album? Not all the way through. Is it a banger? Yep.
Puro pop. Aburrido. Extremadamente comercial
Some fun 80s hits, some cheesy moments.
Tiene 3 muy buenas canciones, pero el resto como que le faltó. Like a prayer es una de las mejores canciones de Madonna en mi opinión.
Singles good, the rest is forgettable.
A couple of absolute bangers. The rest is passable enough. But enough about Madonna lol 👍🏾
Way overdone from top to bottom, with too much of everyhing (including her star power and ambitions). Simple pop songs, infectious dancey hooks are made to bear too much weight (primarily of Madonna’s artistic and cultural ambitions) – one hears a star wanting to be even bigger and brighter and the songs aren’t the right platform, lacking much more than glittery surfaces and studio tricks. The songs aren’t necessarily bad – ”Til Death Do Us Part” and “Promise to Try” have their appeal, but even “Cherish,” the best of the lot, ultimately fails to move one beyond the sense of “oh, that’s sorta pleasant.” The whole thing nets out as just okay, which hardly seems worth all the effort and expense. One gets the feeling all of the songs would’ve been improved by abridgement. It’s a truth not commonly enough acknowledged that pop songs such as these falter once they get past the 3-minute mark. … their sell-by date is three minutes. The claim that this is best pop record since Revolver is ridiculous.
From thos prject i have learned that i like Madge more than i thought i did. That said, a few weak tracks that sound 'made for disney' let the big tunes down badly.
I wouldn't say that I enjoyed this album but I did appreciate it more than I expected to. If you were alive in '89, you know the hits here. Because they were shoved down your throat along with the unchallengeable assertion that Madonna was a force of nature to be worshipped as a goddess of pop. And maybe she is because I generally associate pop music with vapid lyrics underscored by watered down music. And that's what we've got here with "Like a Prayer". That said, the production values here are frankly insane. I mean, damn. When you've got a Madonna-level recording budget, I guess it shows. It doesn't cover the fact that she's actually not a very good vocalist and most of the songs really aren't that great. Prince even makes an appearance but is unable to save "Love Song" from being an utter mess of a track. But the recordings are beautiful and the mixing/mastering are truly top-notch, so there's that.
I remember a bunch of these tracks from when this album was released and the accompanying videos on MTV, and even though I considered myself far too cool in the late 80s for popular music, I thought back then the songs were catchy and enjoyable. I haven't listened to these songs in a mighty long time, so giving this album a full listen-through -- something I really hadn't done yet as my exposure to this material came from public airplay -- I hear how strong a songwriter and dynamite a performer she is. This is a very good album. I don't know if I'll ever really seek it to listen to intentionally, but I do appreciate the good work here.
It was OK - but Madonna isn't really my taste
I've never heard Love Song before and never knew Prince and Madonna worked together
So nostalgic! The hits are so good on this album, the rest I could live without.
Starts ok. Becomes a bit much
Like a Prayer is great, Cherish is cute, Act of Contrition is funny.
Some great songs.
Doesn't get more mainstream pop than Madonna. Truly successful and a huge draw to so many listeners. I happen to *not* be one of those, though I can hear and understand the draw. C+
Solid pop album. The problem is that some of the songs are catchy but go on too long. The title track is a prime example. I'd much rather hear the radio version. Some songs are just okayish to me and don't excite but aren't "trash" either. I give it a 3. It could be a 4 if there was some better editing. It deserves a lost star for that weird ending song too. Not exactly top notch humor...or whatever that was.
These Madonna songs feel so unnecessarily long. They just keep going on and on and on until 5 minutes have passed. If the songs changed at all throughout those eternal minutes, it would be more bearable, but alas, they don’t. That being said, ignoring the feeling of ungodly length, the songs themselves sound pretty good. They have the classic early 90’s pop feel without actually being made in the 90’s, and the best part of this album is the "upbeat-ness" throughout most songs. In addition, every instrumental combined with her voice feels like a perfect fit, with each instrumental providing a different, interesting instrument choice. Favorite track: Dear Jessie
The title track remains Madonna's top contribution to popular music and culture. Rest of the album can't match it but puts up a brave fight even so; I think she maybe got better known around this time for her non-musical provocations, but arguably none of those were as perverse as not only following "Dear Jessie" with "Oh Father" but segueing them together...
Genre: Pop 3/5 An album that plays out like any pop album from any decade, past and present, Like a Prayer is pop easy listening, and showcases some of Madonna's best work. The title track, opener, and lead single from this album is an absolute pop knockout punch, with its catchy chorus and flashy synths begging to be played over and over on pop radio. Unforunately for Madonna, beyond some other tracks with some high-octane features and collaborators, this project is truly a run-of-the-mill pop offering. Prince has a song on here, Love Song, and thank god because I friggin' love the guy and had no idea he had a B-side disguised as a Madonna song. It's damn good, but really only when Madonna steps back and the music, as well as the vocal performance from Prince, takes over. But songs like Express Yourself and Oh Father are also pretty darn good songs, showcasing Madonna's emotional range, but the rest, the filler, is truly filler, forgettable and formulaic. All together, an enjoyable album from a decade I'm not a particular fan of, but it's hard not to enjoy Madonna.
A couple of classic songs but overall just an average album
It's got a couple of singles, mainly "Like a Prayer" and "Cherish". Aside from Madonna's reputation and legacy, the album is average, in my opinion.
I like a lot of Madonna's early work - pretty good pop music from its period with very good production. I don't think this is her best early LP despite a few good cuts on the album. In my view, she goes downhill from here.
It's got a couple classic pop tunes, but as a whole album this is pretty meh.
The title track of this album is an almost perfect slice of late 80s pop. Unfortunately it is miles above anything else on the album. It's a decent listen but I'm not sure it would have been nearly so well thought of without that one track.
Première écoute de cet album dans son ensemble. Un peu inégal, mais c’est de la grosse pop bien produite. Like A Prayer avec sa chorale est vraiment superbe. Un essentiel dans la discographie de l’artiste.
The hits were bumpin, better than I remember. There were many tunes I had never heard. Neat to see more of Madonna than the hits.
“What I do is total commercialism, but it’s also art.” - Madonna
There are a couple of good songs. Like A Prayer was good and the best song. Express Yourself was alright. Love Song is with Prince, so it's good. Then the rest are just unmemorable. I didn't hate it. I didn't skip any songs. Better than some albums that have received 3s, not as good as others, but not a 4. Probably won't ever listen to this album again though.
"Like a Prayer" was a famous song, all the radios played this song years ago. Madonna was a star.
Very pop queen.
I forgot that 80s pop, especially Madonna, was so wildly different across the span of just one album.
It was alright, but I liked her earlier stuff a bit better
Il est vrai que je me suis dandiné.
Pas ma coupe de boisson chaude basée sur l'infusion de vegataux séchés, mais quelques bons moments.
le concept de la dernière chanson est mystérieux mais le reste est entrainant j'imagine
Ah... Madonna is more and more a woman without a man, a woman without feelings, a woman without emotions. Really really pop. Filled with singles (6/10) FT: Like a Prayer
Sounds a little flatly produced these days but there are clearly a lot of classics on here. I don't think Madonna has ever really done it for me
I mean, it's base line pop right? Not sure if it's the pop that started it all. There are some bangers on here but nothing that stands out to me as like extremely impressive.
Started out strong, what an opening! Banger, classic. Was downhill from there and a little confused towards the end.
Three gems in title track, Express Yourself and Cherish. I hadn't heard most of the rest but I liked the Prince duet (might give that a few more spins) and will listen more I think.
Not my favorite album
standard mark for one of those albums with a couple of knockout tracks but a chunk of 80s pop filler
Album opened incredibly strong, but tapered off *hard* for me as it went on.
Referência do pop do final dos anos 80.
Fun nostalgia. Good variety. Surprise epic guitar on the last track lol
Good album, but it deviates into generic pop a little too much. Generally, it is all very good. Favorites: "Like A Prayer", "Express Yourself", "Love Song"
I was excited by this album showing up in our selections. I never listen to Madonna, so this was a great prompt to do so. The title track and other 2 singles are amazing. Cherish is a favourite.
Some pretty classic Madge here
There's no doubt that there are a few great tracks on this album. But there are also a good few that just don't do it for me.
I didn't like it as well as the other Madonna album. Okay.
The first two songs are pop music classics and pretty darn good songs. The rest of the album seems mostly like filler to me. Promise to try is a heart felt ballad that is a cut above the rest as is Oh Father, Keep it Together is a nice slice of George Clinton style funk., but it's not enough to raise the album above being a pretty average pop/dance album. 3.5 🌟
Pretty fun stuff, Like A Prayer is a bop. Otherwise, quite standard 80s pop it seems to me, idk.
Of course I've heard Madonna songs before, but I'd never listened through an album before. I'd say I came out of this presently surprised, the overall production on this record was pretty enjoyable. And of course Madonna can sing, so there's great vocals throughout. While it's not my usual listening style, I can appreciate it.
No es el mejor álbum de Madonna, aunque si fue muy importante y tiene canciones que merecen más reconocimiento
Fun in places Like the start of act do arrition
It's Madonna. Good for what it was at the time, but nothing particularly mindblowing. Has a bit of the "Seinfeld effect" where it was so original and genre-defining at the time, that now it feels 'hacky' and 'derivative' of all the things that came after it.
Love most of the singles off this album but I found most of the other tracks to be less well-developed and produced. Still, a good album overall. 3.5/5 stars
3.3 - Meh-donna. Obviously this one’s got her smash hits, “Like a Prayer”, “Express Yourself” and “Cherish”, so my main question coming into this was whether the album works as a whole. To say nothing about its commercial success, as an album I’d say it’s “good enough.” At least there aren’t any gratuitous remixes or covers. The deeper cuts sometimes work but mostly don’t. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Prince on “Love Song” - a nice midtempo jam. “Promise to Try”, “Dear Jessie” and “Oh Father” are real stinkers - saccharine and utterly forgettable.
Meh, idk, she's talented but I really couldn't care less.
It's ok I guess. Not really my thing, but Madonna does her thing decently. A couple of songs sound like she was trying to sound like Prince. Some of the songs are pretty good, some are pretty mediocre. 2.5 stars, rounding up to 3.
One of the landmark statements in 1980s pop, "Like A Prayer" holds up in places, but is remarkably inconsistent. While the highs are often dazzling, the lows really drag it down. "Like A Prayer" is a great song, from the tension built up in the intro and verses through to the explosion of light in the chorus. It's an effective exercise in build-and-release, with a tight arrangement, and the backing vocalists are the icing on the cake. "Express Yourself" and "Cherish" are also two very enjoyable slices of pop: they take different approaches to being hit singles (one anthemic swagger, the other cutesy doo-wop), but both share a lovingly retro style and ooze the kind of self-assurance at a pop artist at her peak. "Dear Jessie" is the album's surprise gem, a gentle foray into psychedelia that calls to mind Prince's "Around the World in a Day" period. Elsewhere though, the album didn't hit the way I'd expect a multi-platinum to. "Love Song" disappointed me- a duet between Madonna and Prince could have been brilliant, but it feels limp and shapeless, with all the purpose of a demo recording. Then there are the rest of the ballads, weighing down the second side in particular. Madonna certainly isn't the strongest of vocalists, which doesn't bother me for most of the run-time. It becomes more of an issue when "Like a Prayer" leans into stripped back power ballads, songs that seem to rely on vocals more than energy. It's the reason why "Promise to Try" doesn't quite land- for many singers, it could be a perfect showcase, but Madonna is restricted to limited range and expression and it never quite takes off. The other ballads have a similar issue, as well as just dragging the energy of the album down: both "Oh Father" and "Pray for Spanish Eyes" have decent lyrics and sentiment, but they feel bloated and heavy-handed. So while I really enjoyed parts of this album, on balance it's just too inconsistent (frustratingly so) for me to give it anything above a 3*. Those singles still mostly rock though.
some bangers
“A brilliant, thoughtful, startling and joyful example of popular music"
6/10
Fun, soke famous bits
3.5
Oh Father was echt een topnummer
This was my first time hearing a Madonna project on purpose. I've never been a huge pop fan, but as always, I went into this album open minded. I did recognize a couple songs, which I actually enjoyed. There's a reason she's so successful and this album proves that. While I didn't care for a majority of these tracks, they were still solid pop songs. I just don't really care for this type of music. I liked it more than I was expecting, though.
Good if you like that stuff
This album probably started 90ies Pop.
Really enjoyed Till Death Do Us Part
Was going to give this higher as I do enjoy Madonna's perfect pop, however outside of the big tunes this is very forgettable.
It was ok. I'm sure for it's time it was innovative but by today's standards, very mundane. I'm also not a massive Madonna fan
I have this one on vinyl. Like a prayer is one recording for the ages. That production is just amazing, those choruses, those instrumentals I mean damn! And then there is the rest of the album that is just filler for that one track.
very much 80s in a time capsule - fun but also quite a bit of filler between the obvious hits
Well, to listen to the entire album was an act of discipline. With a few exceptions, the whole thing sounds like nondescript 80s pop, which maybe is a sign at how successful it was/is? Anyway, I would not choose to listen to this album.
Certainly some pop bangers here, though decades along it's evident that Madonna is not such a strong singer. Some of the more ballady fare is pretty forgettable.
Very good!
Some classics on here—interesting to listen to Madonna’s voice for a whole album. It’s strangely distinct—nothing spectacular. She has charisma though.
Great start, flame quickly extinguished from there.
i liked it I love your songs and I thought it was fine but it wasn’t anything extraordinary
Pop music is infinitely more interesting to me when live drums are involved
well, this happened. i wasn't particularly looking forward to it, honestly, and i guess i'm glad it's done with. her music occupies a complicated place for me - on the one hand, i was born to kinda hate it. on the other hand, in the late 90s, that became a lot harder to do all of a sudden. i assumed at the time that i'd been hit on the head and just didn't remember it. anyway, in the late 80s, the music was a lot less my speed - though Oh Father is an interesting preview of what was to come later on. that interesting chord progression in the chorus is fun, and the sheer power of her voice really comes through there in a way it doesn't on, say, the title track. (by the way, i strongly recommend looking up the cover by Bigod 20 of Like a Prayer - it's just do deliciously unexpected.)
Found this album very generic pop music, expected a bit more uniqueness from an album of a music legend
You know, I grew up right in the middle of the whole Madonna thing, and was decidedly not a fan. But I'm actually looking forward to listening to some Madonna albums on here. Maybe hearing her 30 years on will give me a different perspective on her music. Madonna's vocals are solid on Like a Prayer. She's not the best vocalist by a long shot, but her personality shines through even the duller tracks and the production goes a long way to making for some interesting pop songs. There are some genuinely lovely arrangements and I like the use of strings. Another thing I've got to say is that they had a good sense of flow from song to song and also just how much of a song is enough. There isn't really a song on here that I would call overly long or overdone. That's a skill right there that a lot of artists/ producers never learn. The album starts strong, really strong, with the title track. You can't deny that "Like a Prayer" is a pretty perfect pop song, one of her best. I can't say the same for the second big hit of the album, "Express Yourself." Sorry Madge, I was bored by that song the first time around and I'm not feeling any differently about it now. Songs like "Cherish" and "Dear Jessie" are just way too lovey dovey and sweet for my taste. I did not know this "Love Song" with Prince was a thing that existed, and I'm excited to find it today. It's way more a Prince song than a Madonna song though, and it's really wonderful. It's possibly my favorite song on here, although I still think "Like a Prayer" is the superior Madonna song. I am also amused to no end that they chose to end the whole thing with "Act of Contrition," which also has Prince's fingerprints all over it (and some pretty blistering guitar work, also by Prince). What an odd choice, but I liked it. Fave songs: Like a Prayer, Love Song, Keep It Together, Oh Father
There are some enjoyable pop tracks in here, and some small gems (pray for spanish eyes), but there's just a lot that seems just "ok" and pretty forgettable. Still nicely varied.
Actually way better than what I expected and way better than the other album from her I had to rate before.
har en banger, resten har en hög lägsta-nivå
Some killer and some filler…. Doesn’t hit all way through unfortunately!
Some nice 80’s grooves and bangers here and can see how Gaga has completely ripped off Madonna. Not going to add anything here to my playlists but you might catch me singing along if some of these come on the radio.
Some brilliant pop songs and some are still stuck in my head 3 days later. Cherish, like a prayer, dear Jessie.
This pop album from Madonna was considered a turning point in her career. She no longer made simple pop songs, and actually wanted to be creative with revealing more about herself as well as experimenting with different musical styles. Almost all of the singles from this album charted in the top 5 and the album was extremely popular as well as controversial for years to come. Probably one of Madonna's best albums and it's easy to jam/dance to. Unfortunately pop is not a favorite genre of mine.
Had a good time listening to this. The ending was a bit wild, I liked it. Wasn't so into the slow ones apart from 'promise to try' which really got to me.
Opens with one of the best pop songs of all time, but thought it was pretty dull after that, surprised
I know a few tracks off this, if it's all as good as the title track then it will be a total banger. Ok, a lot of filler, but not bad in any real sense. Just mostly forgettable 80s pop. Cherish is the best song by a mile. 3/5.
Good classic Madonna
Better than I thought it'd be, still not quite my thing.
-General catchy pop, although some of it is slower than I'd expect -I appreciate the use of orchestral instrumentation -"Act of Contrition" is quite cool with the electric guitar, reversed and normal clapping and chanting, and synth stuff, plus the twist on the prayer -"Like A Prayer" is quite catchy and I appreciate the double entendre implied by the vagueness of the lyrics wow that sounded pretentious. I basically mean how you can't tell if she is talking about God or a lover
Uh huh. It could be worse
Ok
Good overall sound, but only 1-2 bangers
Once again, not my style. I know the hits. They're pretty good. I mean, 15 million people can't be wrong? Am I right? The rest. Just not my bag, baby.
A classic album, enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Skoro četvorka! Dakle, nisam baš očekivao ovakav album, a i jesam. Ne znam, nisam pametan. Like a Prayer, Till Death Do Us Part, Oh Father, Keep it Together i Pray for Spanish Eyes će biti pjesme kojima vjerujem da ću se vraćat, ali ostale pjesme ne kažem da su loše, ali npr. Promise to Try, Act of Contrition (bezveze) i eventualno Dear Jessie neb si pušto, ovo sve ostalo je vrijedno spomena.
A mildly decent pop album. 7.1/10
Gut zu hören.
A really good pop album but after the opening few tracks (like a prayer and express yourself are absolute classics and the Prince collab really good) it feels a bit like mostly filler and one good ballad. Still enjoyable though.
Muy de su tiempo, aparte del tema homónimo apenas me llaman la atención un par de temas. Contextualizado gana bastante.
Great pop songs at the beginning however the ballads at the end really let the album down..
I mean, this is a great album. Not all songs are my cup of tea but there is no denying this should be on the list.
Really enjoyed the album esp the start of it. I can def see now that Gaga kinda stole Madonna's entire style ngl Fav tracks; First two tracks
Some amazing tracks on here. Singles are all great as is the song with prince.
j'aime sa musique a l'occasion soit en auto a la radio mais je n'acheterais pas son produit
Lots of different genres thrown into the mix, which I liked, even if "Dear Jessie" didn't seem to fit with anything else. I liked the weirdness of "Act of Contrition" Fave track - "Like a Prayer" - that shiz is anthemic!
Fun, but a lil too poppy.
some good pop. i mean its madonna what else can you expect?
3
Title track is by far the best song on the album. What a great tune. That drum beat is amazing. I also liked Cherish. Makes me think of True Blue. The second half of the album doesn't do it for me.
It's fine
solid pop but not a ton really connected with me
Surprised I didn't like it more. Sounds like they had a lot of fun with the MIDI, though!
Some good songs but overall I the rest of the album was fine
Not bad, but kinda boring and felt way too long.
6/16 Some great pop. Standout Tracks: Till Death Do Us Part, Pray for Spanish Eyes
Oof. I didn't listen to her in the 80s when she was popular but I expected that her music would hold up. Maybe this is the wrong album for that. It came out in 1989 past her mid-80s peak of hits (or so I remember it anyway). The beats are just so 80s. :) Way too bouncy and generic. She does have a great voice, but it comes off a bit thin with the tinny music. There is one song, though, called Love Song, written by Prince, that he sings on, but is uncredited. That was a nice treat. I'll never listen to this again. 2 stars.
Still cannot stand Madonna. Just instantly annoys me. Don't think I’ll ever be a fan. But, begrudgingly, this record is not 100% bad. Some tracks are abysmal, but I did find myself tapping along at times.
2 out of 5. Definitely a product of it's time. Never listened to one of her albums before and probably won't again.
I can see why it’s so well regarded with how influential it was but I didn’t enjoy it too much. I’m sure with repeat listens in the future it will catch me in a better mood. Rating: 2.4
Apart from a couple of hits, this album is really bad. Extremely.
Probably more than it deserves …an extra Star for the 25 yr old me
Title track and cherish are bangers, the rest is just filler.
Standouts Like a Prayer Keep it Together
Madonna was good in the eighties but her music hasn't aged well.
A lot of ideas that weren't fully developed plus a way too long runtime. I didn't have a fun time listening.
Beyond like a prayer is they any need. Unexpected prince gave it a 2
Like a Prayer is a good start. Thought 2nd song was the England football song World In Motion. Just ripped it off apparently. If its the other way round Im surprised Madonna didnt sue... 3rd song features Prince. The Cyndi Lauper album that was on here had him on too. Got a lot to answer for has ol' Princy Chops 1 song doesnt make an album. Stop with the nonsense.
Never listened. Expectations: Low - Verdict: Alright - The title track is a classic pop song. Express Yourself is fine. You can hear Prince all over Love Song even before you hear his voice. Most songs just sound a bit bland to me. Keep It Together is alright.
It’s not bad but also doesn’t do much for me. I wouldn’t have thought like a prayer will be a big hit. And other tracks are even worse.
Highlights: Like A Prayer, Express Yourself. In a nutshell: "no choice, your voice will take me there..." A great way to open an album- title track (iconic. The gospel choir makes it so much then Express Yourself (an anthem for hyping up a woman who feels "unlucky in love"). It gets inconsistent from track three. The lyrics are tender or completely sappy. Many songs didn't need another chorus tacked onto the end. The album needed two more upbeat tracks to make it less of a downer, in my opinion anyway. Overall: 4/10
Occasional good moments, but pretty much just downhill after the first song. Standout song: Like a prayer
I did not care for this not finish it. House music at a middle school slumber party
"She was raised catholic, then she became a whore" -Bill Burr
#946. Almost every time I hear some shitass 80s pop song playing that I've never heard before and I look to see who it is, it's Madonna. Why people love this woman is beyond me, I just find it irritating. 2/5: annoying
Cheesy pop.
I was quite excited since Like a Prayer is a great song, but I was left disappointed. This album was such a slog to get through. It felt boring and uninspired. Aside from the title track, I don’t want to listen to any of it again. Strong 2.
I recognize that people like her and that she’s talented. But I just find her and her music annoying. Hey that’s why music is subjective right?
no soy tan fan de madonna
I've never liked Madonna. Maybe part of the reason is because Madonna is my mom's reason for saying the 80s had the best music. I don't disagree that the 80s had some bangers, but Madonna isn't one of them.
First few tracks were good, others, meh. 2nd half of the album slowed up.
This was the appropriate ending to Madonna’s 80s era. And the beginning of whatever it is she became. 2.5
I think I prefer ADT Madonna to BDT (After/Before Dick Tracy). I like the singles ok, and "Dear Jessie" and "Spanish Eyes" were interesting. It was also cool to hear Prince - I didn't know they'd collaborated. But for the most part this was a slog. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT IN THE COMPUTER" almost saved it for me.
I mostly find this interminable, in large part because it comes out swinging so hard with the perfect title track. It's the remaining 10 tracks/45 minutes that are the problem. Actually, that's not fair, because Express Yourself also brings the heat. But THEN it's a problem! The record is dated in a way that puts it waaaay out of step with the other heavy hitters of 1989.
Pop is the appropriate genre name, it's so sweet and engineered it makes my teeth hurt. Some 80's nostalgia keeps this from the basement
The track play counts on spotify don't lie, there's 1 good song here Will I listen to again: 1%
Like a prayer remains a very good pop song. A good hook, interesting use of gospel music accompaniment, and subversive in its lyrics and overall messaging. Unfortunately the album doesn’t keep the same energy as the lead single. ‘Oh father’ and ‘Spanish eyes’ aside, where there are shades of Kate Bush and finally some interesting chord progressions, the rest of the album is formulaic and uninteresting.
Well well well, another album that a launches with it eponymous track. Also the most popular track from the record by orders of magnitude. It makes for a curious start, while I listen to the familiar organ laced sexy church bating pop banger, I look forward to the rest of the record with some trepidation. But it's Madonna, the queen of pop (has she been called that? it feels like she would have), I'm sure we're in good hands. Listening to Express Yourself I'm struck by a couple of thoughts. Madonna is 80's music! I totally forgot that. The drums and bass and synth are all absolutely textbook, maybe because of this album? Who knows. Anyway you just know this would have slapped in Stranger Things season 2 in the mall. Come to think of it maybe thats where I've heard it before? No, I'm thinking of Material Girl which... (checks track list) is not on this album. Well this shares a lot of the same DNA as Material Girl and works just fine. At Love Song though, things get interesting. Prince lending guitar and vocals to the track, and recorded at Paisley Park, it's got his finger prints all over it. The vocal harmonies are super interesting, the slow groove is brave, it's peaked my interest significantly - although it is perhaps a little idiosyncratic to have the staying power of a hit. Till Death Do Us Part is kind of good, but my favourite part, and I say this with the utmost respect, was the end which had an outro with some unconventional choices I rather liked. Cherish does a similar sort of thing in the mid-eight. I think it's basically that the extremely 80's and extremely persistent synth bass line thats in all the poppiest songs drops out and gives a bit of a change of texture for a minute. Cherish does have a hook that feels like I've known it my whole life. Chances are I probably have. Dear Jessie again swings for a different texture and doesn't rely on the same sonic palette as the poppier tracks. But it is weird in a new and usual way. Blending something at once chamber orchestra and a Mexican flare of midi trumpets, it feels like she might have been reaching for something in the vein of the Beatles. One thing it does do well is queue up Oh Father, a satisfyingly Celine Dione-esque ballad. Spanish Eyes drops a genuinely hooky last hurrah which has a certain character and vibe to it. This is definitely later to be by borrowed by the band named after the orgasmotron wielding villain in Barberlla, Duran Duran, on their absolute banger Rio. So we may have this tune to thank for it (I'd wager a fiver on it). Finally we reach the end, and the album closes out with An Act of Contrition. A prince guitar solo with a loop of reversed percussion and an effected choir singing over it. Easily the coolest idea of the record to be honest. The spoken word thing she's doing, the melodic ideas, the lack of cheese. I mean it's Prince through and through, even the drum kit has his prints on it. But it's fucking cool. If only more of the record was like this.
Мадонна знатная проститутка
Mostly bland saccharine pop. The instrumentals on "Act of Contrition" were pretty cool, and the track had some potential, but for some reason Madonna started yapping instead of singing.
Disappointed in this as an album despite having a good title track
cute. had it's moments
Disappointing. The singles are great but....
It’s terrible but the title track is one of her best which is why this isn’t one star
2/4
An iconic album by an iconic artist, who achieved cultural ubiquity by selling sex and controversy, with the first two tracks ("Like A Prayer" and "Express Yourself") still receiving air play almost four decades later. Prince is credited as a "Composer, Primary Artist, Producer" on the album. Still, it sounds like a consummate contemporary pop album of its time, and I'd probably switch to another album after listening to those first two songs...
80's trademark pop record which sounds very much like a product of it's time. Refreshing exception is 'Love song' where Madonna really seems more like a assistant and Prince is controlling things. Other standout track is Oh Father which sound bit like Kate Bush. On top of those there are couple of good pop tunes, but there are also too many fillers...
Didn’t finish, it felt a bit meh.
The title track is so awesome, but it really fails off in the second half and becomes a slog.
I was not familiar with this as an album. It does of course contain some of her bangers and ends up being an iconic listen. 7/10 [KEEP]
Ok album highlight is dress you up
I like the title track. But the rest, woof.
Ok. Religious conflicts and dad issues. This is a pop album by Madonna. There may be a reason you never hear deep cuts from Madonna.
Maybe it's one of those important when it came out albums, but I was pretty bored with this very '80's pop. All of these I was unfamiliar with prior to going in (but not all Madonna songs) and tried to keep an open mind
One massive hit and then some other middling Madonna. The title track is good though. I wonder what Tarantino's take on this one would be. I would have thought Express Yourself was a bigger hit. Maybe Spotify streams aren't the best barometer of how big a song was. Madonna and Prince, unfortunately, two great tastes that do not go great together. Love Song is a Prince song on a Madonna album. Cherish has never been one of my favorite Madonna songs but it is a highlight amongst the album tracks. Dear Jessie sucks; stupid lyrics, awful music. The difference between the 70s and the rise of FM radio where entire albums or sides were played and the more singles driven format is nowhere more clear in the loss of overall album quality than this album.
Always assumed I had heard this whole album, but no. The hits were fun. The rest. Meh.
This album was all over the place. Coupla classic hits but to a cohesive album
Likeca prayer, dear jessie
All the songs sound the same. Dull.
This album is still among my small collection of cassettes from when I was younger. At the time, I felt this was a pretty magnificent album. Now, apart from the title track, it all sounds quite insipid and immature. It is perhaps quite accomplished musically, but I can't get past the lyrics. I picture Madonna with the back of her hand raised to her forehead over and over again. Ray of Light is the better album in my estimation.
An important album for pop and some classic tunes. 2 - a good album but not my thing
It's not that it's bad, in fact it's very good at what it does, it's just that I'd rather be listening to something else.
The headline song is great, everything else is not so much.
Hmmmm. Opens strongly, and then it just sort of meanders into mediocrity. I was expecting more. Hard to give it a higher score.
4/10
Like A Prayer is a total banger ofc, but further not a lot of memorable songs. A lot sounded the same.
I think I found Madonna more interesting as a new pop-culture phenomenon in the early portion of her career than I ever did her music. There's often a nasal quality to her voice that I find kind of irritating. The hits were just fine but the rest of the songs were bad to boring with the exception of "Keep It Together" which was funky and enjoyable. 2.5/5
Overproduced. Anybody could be playing any part, including her voicing. It is almost as if everyone involved has collaborated in removing any shred of individuality. I want to like more of Madonna than her nice body and voice and good attitude. But just can't.
I considered a long-form exposition of all the things I was feeling as I listened, but suffice to say I was never a fan and having listened more intently... affirmed. Production, songs, vibe, performance, nothing hits. "Express Yourself" saved this from a 1.
You know and love all the hits but the deep cuts are all over the place and not very good
I don’t rly care for this tbh
I stopped listening to Madonna with 'True blue', this is too full of burning cross and some para-mystical songs.
The title track is an undeniable pop classic and still sounds fresh today. The rest of the record, not so much. It's mostly vapid filler although it's generally groovy, and occasional number rises above the tedium. Spanish Eyes, with its moving lyrics on a taboo subject, is probably the best of them.
It's a fun album, first time hearing a whole Madonna project and it has a real fun 80's vibe to it, but it usually stays the same throughout which isn't bad but it just doesn't keep me invested into the album the whole time.
waarschijnlijk belangrijk in zijn tijd... maar de tijd heeft lelijk huisgehouden met deze plaat...
No thanks
Yeah.... Besides the first 2 songs that I already knew existed, nothing else was even worth listening to...
shit-pop
I didn’t enjoy it. I’m not sure if I was meant to
its fine, groovy but not all that interesting
I don’t think I like madonna
one of the biggest, lowest stakes, most meaningless fights i've ever witnessed was in college when a dancer was considering doing her senior solo to like a prayer and someone else insisted that like a prayer is about fellatio. it lasted for days and altered friendships. anyway, what a banger to lead off perhaps the most "only here for the single" album on the whole entire list.
like a prayer is always a vibe, didn’t majorly enjoy the rest
Pop Soul and Adult Contemporary from 1989 is something that I try to avoid with all my heart.
First two songs are solid radio hits. But her honesty and intimacy on this album give us another example of how thoroughly uninteresting she really was. This album actually diminishes my respect for Sean Penn. Add to that the fact that it would, legitimately, be a better album without her vocal tracks, and one is forced to conclude that it's another one of the, literally scores if not hundreds, of albums on this list that no one needs to hear, ever. Two songs - two stars.
Harsh but she loses stars for being a dick
only liked like a prayer
The title track is the only good song on here. The rest are meh.
Super-boring. I feel weird giving Madonna a 2, but that's what I'm doing. Don't tell Madonna.
Listened to the beginning of each song and very quickly concluded this is one of the weaker entries in Madonna’s catalogue, and man. Does she have some stinkers as she gets older and more tired. I can understand how this was something interesting back in the day but it just sounds to me like a more polished version of your run of the mill 80s pop slop. I much prefer the gravitas and unconventionality of her previous album entry, True Blue.
It has a couple of OK singles, but as an album it's not very good. Favorite song: Cherish
Meh. These pop star albums don't seem to have much individuality in the songs, just look at the cast of thousands involved, everything is a bit overdone. Plus I don't care from Madonna's voice. I'm not clear what criteria get an album on this list - surely it's not just sales?
Her earlier stuff is better. This is not very good
2/5
Certainly some of Madonna's best songs are to be found on here, classics of pop music perhaps, but the rest of it is either boring or pretty bad.
