I'd heard a few songs here and there from this album on Spotify playlists before but I'd never sat down and listened to it in full. I'm of a mixed mind. It's an interesting album but I don't think something I'd listen to in full. Also very concept-albumy to me and out of context the songs don't really work.

This was pleasant enough. I thought it would be a little over the top but it was more chill than expected.

Was nice and chill at parts but the next day I really only remember liking one song. :/

A varied, fun adventure, qlbeit one that i wouldn't go on too often.

A thought I had: The Flaming Lips make music for children. Not saying there's anything wrong with that, or that you need to be a child to enjoy it, but the squelchy bass, pretty soundscapes and gentle/surreal lyrics sound tailor-made for kids (maybe that's psychedelic music in general to some extent, but this band in particular). At first you think they're being ironic somehow but they're not, and I guess that's part of the appeal. Anyway, it's another record I wanted to love but ended up just liking. It's less of a concept album than I expected, and more instrumental. Do You Realize?? and Yoshimi pt.1 are great. The rest sounds lush and dreamy but the songs aren't as strong. 3.5.

Wow. Was I confused on who this band was. I've always thought they sang New Age Girl from Dumb and Dumber. Look who's dumb now.

The concept album that is not a concept album (at least according to the band)! This album has a good sound to it: indie rock with some progressive sounding instrumentals. It was interesting, but I can't say that I loved it on the first couple of listens anyway.

Weird but in a good way. Mindless, no profundities apparent unless the listener has an existential infatuation with "Do You Realize?". The Flaming Lips are melodic, the vocals are balanced well with their music, this is a good listen if not a little depressing towards the end. In a vibe that emits feelings of Scott Pilgrim's more subdued playlists, the change in pace is welcome and certainly not boring, if that is how the listener feels.

More recognisable tubes than I thought

Fun, but less enjoyable than I expected.

You know, it's not a bad album. But it does tend towards the "weird for the sake of being weird" side of quirky. Songs about robots will never not be cheesy and this album leans into the cheddar. But, for all that, the musicality is solid, the performances are fun, and the production is great. It's just ... well, it's just really goofy.

Very '90s and '00s radio vibes on some of the songs. Very... uh... wtf is going on vibes on some of the others... LOL. Like I completely understand the 'musical art' of the album, but idk if those tracks are for me. There were definitely some songs that I really enjoyed to be fair, but the album as a whole probably not for me.

Happily surprised with this one.

Reign of Kindo covered Do You Realize?

Nothing terrible, nothing outstanding.

I remember everyone loved this tears ago and at the time I couldn't get into maybe over hyped. 2 decades on wouldn't say I would get over excited about it but pleasant enougth the concepts a bit lost on me. Don't what the beef with robots is?

I wasn't overly familiar with The Flaming Lips. I enjoyed this album. The opener Fight Test threw me slightly, I initially thought it was a Cat Stevens cover, (then I read the back story on Wikipedia, interesting!)

Interesting album, with some very lovely arrangements. I don't love Wayne Coyne’s vocal style, but you have to give the band credit for creating something rather unique and beautiful. Fave Songs: Flight Test, Do You Realize, In the Morning of the Magicians, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell

Now here's an album that I'm intimately familiar with, but have cooled off to over time, putting me in an interesting spot. How do you rank something like that? Ultimately, it's not a bad album. Some of my change of opinion is based around outside factors - my overall opinion on the band, their musical output since then, Wayne Coyne's ego and behavior. This probably ranks somewhere in the middle for me... a pretty solid indie/alternative rock album, but not revolutionary by any means.

Was this one of the weirdest things to gain popularity in the early 00s? That was a pretty vanilla, mainstream era in American culture I think - boy bands, rap/rock, etc - those were lame, but not weird. Flaming Lips were/are a little bit weird. "She Don't Use Jelly" was almost a decade before this, I think? So they'd been around, but I think it's interesting that this album got as much attention as it did in 2002. Apparently it's not a concept album, according to Wayne Coyne. Could have fooled me. I guess it just is a very thematic album. Kinda like the Arctic Monkeys album earlier this week, replacing all the themes of urban nightlife in Northern England with the existential angst of fighting for survival against pink robots? Niets op aan te merken. Wat verschrikkelijk eigenlijk als ze dat zouden horen. Dat je muziek maakt waar niets op aan te merken valt.

Aparte band, die ik overigens toch liever live zou willen zien dan op plaat. Maar wel echt een plaat met een eigen smoel en interessante muziek.

Ik was enthousiast tot ik me realiseerde dat een paar nummers ook van een boyband hadden kunnen zijn.

LIstened to it a few times. I know the title-track and might have heard Do You Realize before. Everything else was new to me. Has some interesting sounds, but overall, it isn't something that grabbed me. Standout tracks: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part I. Fight Test, Do You Realize.

An interesting concept album, and can definitely see how they adapted this into a musical. i tbink it was a completely average album, i think it was just too similar for me but i did like over all the sound. but the genres were strange but nice sound!

Fun, chill, some 60s and 70s vibes, some grunge.

I really like the album art track 1- the vibe was nice and could bop to it if I was in the right mood track 2- good transition, very psychedelic, like mike tvs song in willy wonka, feels like a post apocalyptic world after the mechanical uprising when the first plant grows again track 3- feels much more happy than the last track, love the backing vocals, good vibes, interesting use of synths within majority guitar, so far the whole album feels like I'm tripping on acid, are the robots a metaphor for like depression/drugs?, vibe got darker at end track 4- wtf is happening, the battle between the robots and yoshimi/him? overload of synths and screaming, a wild ride, idk what's happening but its kinda fun, will never listen to this song again tho track 5- back to the psychedelic vibe of track 3, no vocals for a while, 2 tracks, there we go, reminds me of Harry styles, feels hopeful with instrumental but the lyrics allude to giving up/surrendering, a bit of a spacey vibe to it, like floating around in the universe with no set location, just being a free spirit roaming around space, this is a long ass song, the drops are very nice whenever the music stops and picks back up track 6- vocals are very quiet so I can't hear what he's saying but love the vibe, very peaceful, this whole album so far has felt like a lucid dream, harmonies gave been nice all the way through, not a fan of a fade out track 7-feels like stepping off your spaceship onto an alien planet where their civilisation is much more advanced than your own and feeling out of your depth, feels like floating, lovely vibe as usual, songs are starting to sound very similar which isn't a good sign, outro was nice track 8- called its summertime so should feel summery, is giving quite a summery vibe, reminds me of a flashback to summer in a coming of age movie, showing a montage of all of the summer highlights with your friends, I really like this one, I never really like closing a track with drums track 9- intro of counting down was fun, epic vocals with echo, FLOATING IN SPACE, light happy instrumental with dark lyrics 'do you realise that someday everyone you know will die', key change feels very worshippy, this is one of my faves so far, bridge is very good, closes with opening line which I like track 10- gives the same vibes as the rest of the tracks after the sudden change in do you realise, pace is picking up, ties together album themes of looking into the future and hopes/dreams looking forward, track 11 (last track) - strange as all we have is now felt like a strong closer and this could be a complete tonal shift from that, looking to be just an instrumental track like track 4 but slightly less chaotic, slightly, feels a bit unnecessary

I liked it

How the future was imagined 20 years ago. To me it's interesting and calming, but in parts a bit annoying and shallow.

This was a lovely surprise, which I hadn't heard before.

I liked it. I give it 3* because I probably won't choose to put it on, if somebody was listening to it though I'd happily leave it on. They're obviously decent at writing I enjoyed the layers to their songs it's just preference more than anything. Just didn't grab me as an album but wasn't bad by any means.

Nice to have heard the album. But it will not go into my playlist.

Some really good songs, some meh. Definitely different, and my kind of weird. Will improve with more listens.

Cool synths, insufferable, pretentious lyrics

hrgh okay i don't.... actually like this album very much. i know that's sacrilege i've just never really been a flaming lips fan. but i'll give it another listen the lyrics are just. a bit too cute. i don't know how to describe it it insists upon itself Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell is decent. i liked this song in the past and i don't mind it now Are You A Hypnotist?? is also okay i used to really love Do You Realize? and i think i listened to it too many times i don't know i have a weird hater energy for this album and the flaming lips generally that i don't understand. i try to pick out reasons i don't like it, and they're things that other artists do that i'm fine with. this band and this album are generally well-liked by people who like other music that i'm very into. i scanned through their discography quickly trying to figure out what other flaming lips i've listened to, and i think i still like a decent chunk of Transmissions from the Satellite Heart better than this album, but i can't really articulate how it's different. which vexes me; i want to be able to identify why i don't like something. but sorry Yoshimi i'm still not feeling it in 2026

I tried this album several times but I can’t bake bread from it.

It does what it sets out to do, but it's really boring and uninteresting.

Its not as bad as i remember but i feel like I hear whatever it is that people who do not like dark side of the moon are hearing when they listen to that album. This is Too quirky for me. I like that they’re weird but it’s not my flavor of weird.

Had high hopes for this due to their banger SpongeBob song I have heard previously, but none of this matches the godliness of that song.

Despite having what I think is a good name for a band, this fell flat. Slow paced, I did not care for the vocals, and it was boring. One or two songs had some hope in me kindled for enjoyment, but alas, this never came to fruition.

I know people love it. I cant.

I really don't get why this band is so popular. Do You Realize is pleasant enough but honestly most of this album is just downright irritating.

Some of the songs were bordering on unbearable but there were a few good ones. Not a fan of some of the lyrics and the electronics could be a bit much at times.

I like the concept and the guitar and sounds but I don't really enjoy his voice, gave it a try a few months ago as well. I guess it's just not for me

I liked the electronic sounds, but the lead singer's voice was 2 twee 4 me.

This had its moments. The production is really good. Musically, for me every time something interesting happened it would descend in to blandness. The opening track seemed to lean on Father & Son too, which bothered me and I found that being apparent throughout listening (“Hold on, isn’t this…?”) which kinda put me off. Not a fan of the vocals. Pretentious and pompous. Would not revisit.

It wasn't terrible, but it was maybe a bit too strange for my tastes.

Tried again, but still haven't understood the fuss about The Flaming Lips.

There's no way these guys weren't high whilst making this. This album feels like I'm in the back of a van whilst it's going down country lanes at 70 mph and I'm getting thrown around.

The only reason I know of The Flaming Lips is because of one track. I can see why, the rest of the album is fine. Nothing special.

This is definitely an interesting concept for an album, just the execution left more to be desired. The first few songs seemed like the band was getting their bearings straight, then "In the Morning of the Magicians" and "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" were good, but then the back half of the album just teeters off.

I am beginning to notice that I really don't like white guys singing everything in their falsetto voice. It always sounds to strained. The vocals really take away from my enjoyment, it might be a good album musically. But I don't like it

One to come back to. Do you realize?? is probably one of my top 100 songs of all time, but the album in which it is situated is rather disappointing. The album starts off well and is probably something to enjoy whilst carrying out mundane chores. The folky guitar and vocals are the highlights. It then gets progressively weirder as they start to settle into the theme of Yoshimi undertaking this galactic battle. If you are trying to go about your day with this as a backdrop, good luck to you my friend. All we have is now is where they frankly lost me. So all in all a mixed experience

It’s time to accept that The Flaming Lips is a very boring band with the odd standout track. This album is no exception. Also Wayne Coyne just seems like a bad dude. For every good track, there are 3-4 super dull ones. Wacky can be good but it helps when you’ve got the melodies to back it up. I’ll give the production a thumbs up. Best: Fight Test Worst: take your pick, plenty to choose from

instrumentals and production is very interesting and creates a clear vibe, but vocals are flat and feel expressionless, bringing the whole experience down - super fun concept tho

I hated this. I knew off one or two songs, but it was clinky clanky (best way I can describe). I understand why it might be people's vibe, it has the mellow somber vibe, but the strange instrument interruptions made it weird for me.

For some reason I found this album really dull, despite realizing it shares a lot of similarities with other artists and albums I've enjoyed over the years, and I think it probably all comes down to the vocals. I may have liked this a little bit more had I listened to it on a different day. As it was I came to it after an extended journey into some really old school sounding industrial bands a friend recommended me. This album, on the back of those, just felt so tame it jarred. I was never a big Flaming Lips listener in the first place as they’ve never really been my thing. Sadly, they continue to remain not really my thing.

i can see why the album is a classic, and it has interesting ideas. some songs resonated with me, but overall i didn't love it. the theme of robots gaining sentience and emotions rings hollow to me at the moment.

The songwriting and production here is competent but the neo-hippie/post-psychedelic vibe of this record doesn't ring my bell, nor do the moon-eyed and/or bizarro lyrics (in "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Pt. 1", it sounds like singer Wayne Coyne is just reading a list of bullet points). It also doesn't help that Coyne has a thin, colorless voice that doesn't do much to sell these songs. There are some pretty instrumental stretches here (especially in the closing track) but they're not compelling enough to make me want to spin this album again.

5 seconds in: this is groovy... not sure i love all of the singing over each other in "The Test"- funny ending sounds squishy and outerspace-y, reminds me of the red blob guys in stray oh theyre screaming. 2-3/5

Good in parts

Pretty undistinctive. I confess to not giving it my full attention, listening to it while following a recipe. I think it was the vocalist I found least interesting. There were a couple instrumentals--full songs or portions I don't remember--that sounded more intriguing.

God Damn, I hate Indie! Blah! Self-indulgent crap only a fragile, over- educated, over-medicated twat might enjoy. Sometimes that’s me. Damn it, I hate when that happens!

I don’t know why I had a synthesizer farting in my ear for this entire album. Really wasn’t a huge fan of this one. Whiny vocals coupled with just strange sound effects behind the music gave it a much too silly atmosphere. Do You Realise is kind of okay and stands out as essentially the only track I’d return to, but even then is ruined by the weirdest ambient sounds?

Came back to this one a few days after it was recommended. Interesting sound, don't completely hate it, but i don't think i would come back to it that much, just not my style. i'm sure some people love this sound and will enjoy it, but not a personal favorite for me. kinda wanted to give up on it before it finished, but finished it. i just dont care much for the kind of childish sound, cutesy sound effects, vocal delivery, lyrics. idk just eh

Still not convinced…

One song in and I'm liking this much better than the other album they had on the list. It gave back that goodwill pretty fast. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 has great music but these guys cannot quit with the lyrics that are better suited to a comedy album. The up and down continues as Pt. 2 is not good. They should have called this album "Music You Love When You're High and Literally No Other Time". The Shins do this music better. Do You Realize?? is the hit from this album and on some commercial. The lead singer's voice is cartoonish in the worst way.

Something about Yoshimi makes me feel gross. The druggy vibe isn't fun. To me it feels more like "I felt like crap and took too much which makes me feel extra crappy" more than anything else. The lyrics are dorky and the instrumentation is annoying. I can't imagine sitting through a three hour live version of this.

I think it's time for people to recognize what I've known for a long time. The Flaming Lips are not a special band. This album is better than the rest of their oeuvre but I will not ever seek this out again.

Never understood the hype for this album, it's really not that good. Is it experimental? Yes. But that doesn't make it good.

This album doesn't belong in the list: It has no authentic musical message, just a mishmash of whatever was cool at the time it came out, laid on top of generic melodies and bland monotonous vocals. Also, how lame is adding a sample of a cheering crowd to a non live album? How's that not exactly like a laugh track?

Love the albumart but the music is forgettable and frankly kinda all over the place. Too mellow while trying to be creative results in 50 minutes droning electropop.

Un-offensive, bordering on bland. Melodic in parts but this is music to send you to sleep on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon. Opening an album with what seems to be a plagarised track doesn't set the scene well.

i genuinely did not like this, not my style, some songs were good such as ybtprp2 but p1 was horrendous, was expecting something along the lines of since i left you by the avalanches in terms of production but it's giving bowie-sparks lovechild

I found this one to be pretty boring tbh,not really my thing at all. "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2" was pretty cool. Also the cover art is fantastic. Other than that I really wasnt interested.

I'm convinced you need to be tripping balls to truly appreciate this album. I did enjoy the "flow" it had and would love to see how they make all the different weird noises scattered throughout. If The Strokes is the alt/punk kid in high school, The Flaming Lips is the alt/stoner kid. Didn't realize "Do You Realize??" (haha) was part of this album and honestly, I get why it was the only stand out but it also didn't seem to really fit with the rest of the album. Another ablum that wasn't really for me (I was ready for it to be over by the last song) but glad I have it a shot.

what i imagine someone who is performative + indie would listen to - honestly, not memorable? i think it was really interesting that the album had some robotic elements to it but i could not get through the full album since i felt so bored.

Started out nicely, Fight Test was pretty chill, not bad. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1 was pretty good, only one I've heard before, solid smooth track. Then it just went downhill. The rest of the album was mostly boring and repetitive, or just kinda ok. Best song: Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1

- When I saw this today, I was like “oh, great! I had a copy of this album in university and probably loved it… but, why haven’t I listened to it in years?” Well, I only really recognize a few of the songs, so looks like I skipped most of the songs back then, too. - To me, the tone of Wayne Coyne’s voice is too thin, nasal, reedy, and whiney. - I only really like Yoshimi pt 1 and Do you Realize - I guess there’s a reason those were the hits. Flight test is nice, too, but it’s pretty much Cat Steven’s Father & Son part II, and the Magicians is nice when there’s no vocals. I find the rest is just meandering and trying too hard to be experimental or atmospheric, and it ends up feeling annoying or bland. - This band is pretty fun in concert - I think maybe the music is better live combined with all the theatrics, but the concert I saw was also a bit chaotic and trying to throw everything at the wall without a real direction.

Didn’t like this to start much, but got better. It kind of felt like an inspiration for tame impalas early work. Enjoyed the last song the most. Unsure I’d listen again.

If I'm honest, there's only one good song on this thing (and it's part 1 of the title track). Everything else just seemed utterly forgettable.

1. Fight Test - 7 Fun rock song. The instrumentals are good and I love the drums on it but the vocal range is really the star of the show for this track. Pretty good overall. 2. One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21 - 6 I'm not going to lambast the randomness of the lyrics because I understand this is like a Coheed and Cambria like album where it's telling a story through each track that progressively builds. Having said that the instruments come and go too much for my liking. Overall though, it's not a bad track. 3. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 - 3 It's way too simple and repetitive a track. Way too repetitive. The last two tracks is the chorus over and over and over again endlessly. 4. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part 2 - 2 Instrumentally it's very repetitive and the scream-o vocals/part of it is a huge turnoff. 5. In the Morning of the Magicians - 6 Instrumentally it's a good song if not a little bit all over the place. It's trying to tell a story that changes twice in tone but each change is pleasant and leads to some decent guitar or drum play. 6. Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell - 4 It's okay. Nothing phenomenal and very repetitive. The track could lull you to sleep. 7. Are You a Hypnotist?? - 7 Drums are fantastic here and the background almost gospel like sound works great with the vocals here. Good song. 8. It's Summertime - 5 It's okay for a track. Nothing phenomenal about it instrumentally of vocally. Very much a a pass over track. 9. Do You Realize?? - 7 It's a lyrically fantastic track. The sound is excellent until the bridge at which point the track lulls a bit before eventually concluding with a great sound. Overall solid. 10. All We Have Is Now - 3 Not a fan of the vocal sounds and the effects that are put on them. Lyrically I'm also not a huge fan either. The pace of the music also changes too many times to really stay with and enjoy the track. 11. Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia) - 2 It's okay but I find it has the same problem in terms of of the pitch changes as All We Have Is Now. Feels like a bad 80s futuristic track. Sounds Radiohead adjacent, which I should like, but it's not as compelling for me. Maybe it's just too weird? Or too synthy? Perhaps I just like the singer's voice far less than Thom Yorke. It's closer to Damon Albarn at his absolute most annoying

When an album like this has been deemed more worthy to be on this list than ANY Warren Zevon album, it's hard to take this enterprise seriously.

Oh geez, I don't know about this one guys... I think I prefer them covering other artists.

I liked the production on "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt.2" and that's about it.

The problem with concept albums is that the concept is always cooler than the album.

an overrated album by one of the most overrated bands of the 20th century. "hey, our music is really terrible, lets all get in a plastic ball and blast confetti everywhere, maybe our idiot fans will forget how bad this actually is!" When your fans can only praise the band by talking about the concert experience, and that live experience isn't tied to the music itself, it's a bad sign.

I only know one of The Flaming Lips songs (not on this album) and I find that one a bit strange. I’m not really sure how to describe this album.

Great. Another 47 minutes of my PRECIOUS time totally WASTED by BORING ALBUM… I would NOT have otherwise utilised those 47 minutes effectively…

Just not for me. Not bad, but it didn't grab me and wasn't really enjoyable to listen to.

Calm music, completely new to me, but it doesn't leave a lasting impression

The first half is very inconsistent and kind of unlistenable due to the slow and lifeless nature. In the second half, I suppose it does improve and regains some semblance of consistency, however, it still remains a lackluster album in my opinion.

Got some great standout tracks, fight test, yoshimi pt 1, do you realize… but was a bit underwhelmed by the rest of the album.

First 3 tracks were fun but his voice got annoying very quickly, then the instrumental track kicked in which I liked alot. But the whining voice detracted from the music to a point where it had an affect like nails on a chalkboard. Shame.

I had always been curious about this record due to the album art, but having listened to it I was rather disappointed. The vocals don’t do it for me. Like Neil Young minus the soul. Lyrics are too on the nose and the whole thing just kind of put me to sleep.

It was ok. I knew and liked Do You Realize?. There were a couple instrumental pieces that I didn’t not like.

I guess I like this better than their other one, but the dude sounds like a muppet. I’ve fallen asleep to this album twice, so I don’t know if I’ve properly “listened” to it, but I don’t think I could do a round three in good faith. I don’t hate it, but it’s not for me.

Not enjoying it

Pretty indifferent to this album. The story didn't particularly interest me, and I'm not a huge fan of the overall ethereal/ambient musical tone. Some of the extended instrumental section were interesting enough, especially as more voices are added to the sound. Decent enough if you're into this kind of music. Concept album but the concept is transcendentalism

A couple of beautiful jams and a lot of beep boop. I owned this album and a lot of it sounded unfamiliar to me….and a little (a lot) Kid A inspired. They were effing excellent live.

I listened to the whole thing and nothing stood out for me. Not one thing. I'll definitely relisten to it more closely but.... I'm not so sure there's much to it. I didn't bother relistening to it. I just can't be bothered. This isn't bad but I didn't find there to be anything interesting.

Never heard this before. Dunno how I feel about it. Ok listened to all of it. FL walked so Tame Impala could run.

Just be grateful if you never lived through the era when the UK music press was eating E and seeing the Flaming Lips live and talking about how transcendent and life-affirming it was to see "Do You Realise" live. Guess what? If it's a cold afternoon and you're eating lukewarm chicken nug nugz and listening to this album it's not all that. It's adequate but it's also hard to see this as anything more than the man who would directly lead to the creation of "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz"

One song in and I'm liking this much better than the other album they had on the list. It gave back that goodwill pretty fast. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 has great music but these guys cannot quit with the lyrics that are better suited to a comedy album. The up and down continues as Pt. 2 is not good. They should have called this album "Music You Love When You're High and Literally No Other Time". The Shins do this music better. Do You Realize?? is the hit from this album and on some commercial. The lead singer's voice is cartoonish in the worst way.

Too experimental for me

I really don't understand this music. And I really don't understand why this album is included whereas Grandaddy's 'Under the western freeway' isn't. This is a very very mediocre rip-off of Grandaddy. Grandaddy has rock elements included in its music and those are completely missing here. It's a grey mass of boring music possibly suitable for a wellness facility. Musical wallpaper as we call it in the Netherlands. So yes, you can listen to it, hence for the 2 stars.

starting of with a unfortunate track they should have not included. I see something very familiar in writing something then halfway through realise that it is too close to some other song. in a non-greedy world it wouldn't have mattered but money is god so pay up. Is statement about it really highlights that he didn't have any bad intentions. The concept is interesting when you read about it... sadly the music is somewhat similiar and very bland. even "do you realise" that i heard before, is a bit boring
