The only song I know by them is “She Don’t Use Jelly” and the sound of this album was unexpected.
Not quite my tempo
This was a unique listen. I can see why it’s in the 1,001 albums. Not my type of music.
a 2.9 I liked Do You Realize?? and All We Have is Now I feel like I've heard "All We Have is Now" from somewhere
2/5 - fairly interesting but not for me
It was pretty weird and unpleasant to listen to overall.
Don’t like this guys voice. The instrumentals are pretty good but they kinda just make me want to listen to Plastic Beach by Gorillaz
Easy listening thing. But not my cup of tea. "Aproaching Pavonis Moons By Balloon" was alright.
Meh, I agree this is for middle class vegans
Started out nicely, Fight Test was pretty chill, not bad. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1 was pretty good, only one I've heard before, solid smooth track. Then it just went downhill. The rest of the album was mostly boring and repetitive, or just kinda ok. Best song: Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1
Synths are cool. First half of album is good second is rubbish
I found this to be monotonous.
Boring
This was terrible. I utilized the "skip track" button several times. The drummer isn't too bad but the electronic noise is shite.
- Abuelo?
- When I saw this today, I was like “oh, great! I had a copy of this album in university and probably loved it… but, why haven’t I listened to it in years?” Well, I only really recognize a few of the songs, so looks like I skipped most of the songs back then, too. - To me, the tone of Wayne Coyne’s voice is too thin, nasal, reedy, and whiney. - I only really like Yoshimi pt 1 and Do you Realize - I guess there’s a reason those were the hits. Flight test is nice, too, but it’s pretty much Cat Steven’s Father & Son part II, and the Magicians is nice when there’s no vocals. I find the rest is just meandering and trying too hard to be experimental or atmospheric, and it ends up feeling annoying or bland. - This band is pretty fun in concert - I think maybe the music is better live combined with all the theatrics, but the concert I saw was also a bit chaotic and trying to throw everything at the wall without a real direction.
Didn’t like this to start much, but got better. It kind of felt like an inspiration for tame impalas early work. Enjoyed the last song the most. Unsure I’d listen again.
If I'm honest, there's only one good song on this thing (and it's part 1 of the title track). Everything else just seemed utterly forgettable.
1. Fight Test - 7 Fun rock song. The instrumentals are good and I love the drums on it but the vocal range is really the star of the show for this track. Pretty good overall. 2. One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21 - 6 I'm not going to lambast the randomness of the lyrics because I understand this is like a Coheed and Cambria like album where it's telling a story through each track that progressively builds. Having said that the instruments come and go too much for my liking. Overall though, it's not a bad track. 3. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 - 3 It's way too simple and repetitive a track. Way too repetitive. The last two tracks is the chorus over and over and over again endlessly. 4. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part 2 - 2 Instrumentally it's very repetitive and the scream-o vocals/part of it is a huge turnoff. 5. In the Morning of the Magicians - 6 Instrumentally it's a good song if not a little bit all over the place. It's trying to tell a story that changes twice in tone but each change is pleasant and leads to some decent guitar or drum play. 6. Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell - 4 It's okay. Nothing phenomenal and very repetitive. The track could lull you to sleep. 7. Are You a Hypnotist?? - 7 Drums are fantastic here and the background almost gospel like sound works great with the vocals here. Good song. 8. It's Summertime - 5 It's okay for a track. Nothing phenomenal about it instrumentally of vocally. Very much a a pass over track. 9. Do You Realize?? - 7 It's a lyrically fantastic track. The sound is excellent until the bridge at which point the track lulls a bit before eventually concluding with a great sound. Overall solid. 10. All We Have Is Now - 3 Not a fan of the vocal sounds and the effects that are put on them. Lyrically I'm also not a huge fan either. The pace of the music also changes too many times to really stay with and enjoy the track. 11. Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia) - 2 It's okay but I find it has the same problem in terms of of the pitch changes as All We Have Is Now. Feels like a bad 80s futuristic track. Average Rating: 4.73 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 2.36 Rounded Down: 2 Stars
It's not bad but it's not my style.
Do you realise and all we have is now are amazing songs and stand the test of time. The rest is directionless meandering. Great title for an album though.
Weird
zzz (trots Do You Realize?? som är trevlig)
Sounds Radiohead adjacent, which I should like, but it's not as compelling for me. Maybe it's just too weird? Or too synthy? Perhaps I just like the singer's voice far less than Thom Yorke. It's closer to Damon Albarn at his absolute most annoying
Wanted to like it, sounded beautiful. But did not do it for me all the way
I wasn’t into this when it first came out and I’m still not really into it.
Not for me but I get the hype. It’s like Pink Floyd for the 90s.
I understand this album is art but it just doesn't hit me right. 5/10
4.44
Not my bag. Bit twee. Lots more production going on than I realised at first listen. Reminds me of Moselele days!
2/5
When an album like this has been deemed more worthy to be on this list than ANY Warren Zevon album, it's hard to take this enterprise seriously.
Oh geez, I don't know about this one guys... I think I prefer them covering other artists.
I liked the production on "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt.2" and that's about it.
The problem with concept albums is that the concept is always cooler than the album.
an overrated album by one of the most overrated bands of the 20th century. "hey, our music is really terrible, lets all get in a plastic ball and blast confetti everywhere, maybe our idiot fans will forget how bad this actually is!" When your fans can only praise the band by talking about the concert experience, and that live experience isn't tied to the music itself, it's a bad sign.
I only know one of The Flaming Lips songs (not on this album) and I find that one a bit strange. I’m not really sure how to describe this album.
Great. Another 47 minutes of my PRECIOUS time totally WASTED by BORING ALBUM… I would NOT have otherwise utilised those 47 minutes effectively…
Just not for me. Not bad, but it didn't grab me and wasn't really enjoyable to listen to.
Calm music, completely new to me, but it doesn't leave a lasting impression
The first half is very inconsistent and kind of unlistenable due to the slow and lifeless nature. In the second half, I suppose it does improve and regains some semblance of consistency, however, it still remains a lackluster album in my opinion.
Got some great standout tracks, fight test, yoshimi pt 1, do you realize… but was a bit underwhelmed by the rest of the album.
Tried listening to it and I’m generally a fan of this type of music but this album just wasn’t doing it for me
Despite multiple listens, I really couldn't get into this
just okay
First 3 tracks were fun but his voice got annoying very quickly, then the instrumental track kicked in which I liked alot. But the whining voice detracted from the music to a point where it had an affect like nails on a chalkboard. Shame.
I had always been curious about this record due to the album art, but having listened to it I was rather disappointed. The vocals don’t do it for me. Like Neil Young minus the soul. Lyrics are too on the nose and the whole thing just kind of put me to sleep.
It was ok. I knew and liked Do You Realize?. There were a couple instrumental pieces that I didn’t not like.
Wasn’t terrible, but a bit weird and went on too long
Whimsy
I guess I like this better than their other one, but the dude sounds like a muppet. I’ve fallen asleep to this album twice, so I don’t know if I’ve properly “listened” to it, but I don’t think I could do a round three in good faith. I don’t hate it, but it’s not for me.
Not enjoying it
Pretty indifferent to this album. The story didn't particularly interest me, and I'm not a huge fan of the overall ethereal/ambient musical tone. Some of the extended instrumental section were interesting enough, especially as more voices are added to the sound. Decent enough if you're into this kind of music. Top tracks: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1; Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon
I found this a bit boring and quite annoying at times. I still don:t like the sound of his voice.
Concept album but the concept is transcendentalism
A couple of beautiful jams and a lot of beep boop. I owned this album and a lot of it sounded unfamiliar to me….and a little (a lot) Kid A inspired. They were effing excellent live.
I listened to the whole thing and nothing stood out for me. Not one thing. I'll definitely relisten to it more closely but.... I'm not so sure there's much to it. I didn't bother relistening to it. I just can't be bothered. This isn't bad but I didn't find there to be anything interesting.
Never heard this before. Dunno how I feel about it. Ok listened to all of it. FL walked so Tame Impala could run.
meh
I did not like this
Just be grateful if you never lived through the era when the UK music press was eating E and seeing the Flaming Lips live and talking about how transcendent and life-affirming it was to see "Do You Realise" live. Guess what? If it's a cold afternoon and you're eating lukewarm chicken nug nugz and listening to this album it's not all that. It's adequate but it's also hard to see this as anything more than the man who would directly lead to the creation of "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz"
Very bland, like a beige cardigan.
yuck. Overrated. Boring stoner trash.
Would have been quite annoying if it wasn't so easy to ignore
Experimental album but also a little too slow for me.
this wasn't bad but it washed over me.
One song in and I'm liking this much better than the other album they had on the list. It gave back that goodwill pretty fast. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 has great music but these guys cannot quit with the lyrics that are better suited to a comedy album. The up and down continues as Pt. 2 is not good. They should have called this album "Music You Love When You're High and Literally No Other Time". The Shins do this music better. Do You Realize?? is the hit from this album and on some commercial. The lead singer's voice is cartoonish in the worst way.
Not my cup of tea
Roseselsa Quietsea II.
2.45 star. Liked some of it, but I don't remember a lot of it after a full listen
Meh
Didn't like it
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots while I battle how boring this album is...
Too experimental for me
I really don't understand this music. And I really don't understand why this album is included whereas Grandaddy's 'Under the western freeway' isn't. This is a very very mediocre rip-off of Grandaddy. Grandaddy has rock elements included in its music and those are completely missing here. It's a grey mass of boring music possibly suitable for a wellness facility. Musical wallpaper as we call it in the Netherlands. So yes, you can listen to it, hence for the 2 stars.
starting of with a unfortunate track they should have not included. I see something very familiar in writing something then halfway through realise that it is too close to some other song. in a non-greedy world it wouldn't have mattered but money is god so pay up. Is statement about it really highlights that he didn't have any bad intentions. The concept is interesting when you read about it... sadly the music is somewhat similiar and very bland. even "do you realise" that i heard before, is a bit boring
Boring pretentious twaddle.
a bit too electronic and synthy for my liking. Well arranged but not going on my top list
Meh, not a huge fan
Ok
Some bangers (title track and race for the prize) but also a lot of fuzzed out druggy filler
Yeah. I can see why they’re popular. But this just ain’t my speed.
Alternative rock, it's fine. Vocals aren't my style, but I dig the experimental instrumentals. 2.5
Just an ok concept album. Decent in parts but not a lot I’d go back to relative to their other work. Fave track: “do you realize”.
whats with this list and weird music? give me some normal shit that isnt old or pretentious
- "Fight Test" starts and ends like an mri scan sooooo I didn't love that. It's probably less triggering for others. - "One More Robot" almost made me give up on the whole album. After it I decided to listen to the most popular songs and being a basic b I did enjoy them a bit more. - Ultimately not my kind of music. I think I got an upset stomach from all the experimental/electronic sounds.
Sanotaan kauniisti että ei kolahtanut. Unettavaa menoa suurimmaksi osaksi. Nimikappale oli hyvä.
I've listened to this album a lot since it was generated for me last month, and I still don't care about it. There's a lot of genre blending and a concept involving Pink Robots, but throughout it all I was left unimpressed. Wayne Coyne's voice annoys me, the production sometimes feels sterile, and most of the melodies sound very "stock"; the whole record seems aimed pleasing mainstream rock and indie journalists. "Do You Realize??" once inspired me call my parents. Other times, it sounds trite and pandering. I can also barely remember what most of the album sounds like after each listen. Nothing sticks.
mildly interesting but mostly boring and the singing is very irritating... i couldn't finish it
I've tried for years to get to like this band but it just won't click for me. I think I'm a little too old to understand the mentality of these guys. Sorry kids
The main vocalist has suchhh a grating voice. Sorry sir. The instrumentals are amazing, but the lyrics and delivery just ruin it for me.
Just not a fan. The singles are good but they've become more popular due to the weird live shows rather than good music.
Trop prog pour moi
++: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2, Are You a Hypnotist??, It's Summertime, Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia) +: Fight Test, One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21, In the Morning of the Magicians, Do You Realize??, All We Have Is Now +-: Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell -: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 5,5/10
Eh, best thing about it is the title.
Somebody likes the Beatles way too much and it isn’t me.
Literally no idea what’s going on.
I was happy when this popped up. I've always like the idea of The Flaming Lips - psychedelic weirdos playing eccentric songs about robots and scientists. The reality is frustrating. Yes, Do You Realize has brilliant, devastating lyrics but the song is too sweet. Does it need the key change? No. Most of the rest of the album either passes me by or irritates me with twee, childlike (childish?) ideas.
Sometimes the 1001 list challenges your preconceived ideas about bands - sometimes it just confirms it. I've been told by so many people that I should check out The Flaming Lips, and I've tried, but I just don't like them. I find them really irritating and wanky.
I rate Yoshimi battels the robot part one a 2 star because its just not for me and it keeps repeating the same thing. I rate do you relize a 2 star because its just not for me and it keeps repeating the same thing. I rate
Song: Yoshimi battles the pink robots I like this song because it just matches and it sounds good and the lyrics are good but this song is kind of weird Song: its summer time this song is sad and a little weird which I don't like Song: Do you realize this song is good but weird the most song I like the most is the first one I would not recommend these songs though
I like this album because it is not typical music I feel like it is unique in a good way. The songs are very catchy.
the first song is weird the lyrics are js weird and random. the second song is not cool either
Not interesting
Favourite Track: Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia) Honourable Mentions: In the Morning of Magicians There's something mesmerizing about an album that tackles life's most profound dualities: life and death, happiness and misery, love and heartbreak; all through the fantastical lens of a girl fighting pink robots. This is a super psychedelic album, especially love the synths mixed with acoustics which gives a dreamy/euphoric vibe to the experience. Not really an album I'd put on unless if I were trying to evoke a very specific (euphoric) vibe, hence the 2 star rating.
A few times, I thought the album was finally picking up, but it never did. It felt too slow and boring for my taste. Anyway, two stars for those few times.
I keep confusing Flaming Lips and Flaming Sideburns, so instead of garagey action rock I get artsy fartsy pop music with whiney vocals and acoustically played animated disney soundtracks. This is awful and I'm kind of upset it's called a rock album. I can't be arsed to analyse this sloppy stool sample any more.
In the morning of the Magicians is quite good. Other than that, I get bored
1.8
First time listening to these guys. Not into it. Nothing caught my attention, felt a little too hip for me...
The praise this album gets is just baffling to me. For me, it's a big load of nothing, none of the songs doing anything at all for me, the audio equivalent of eating a boiled potato. Even after learning a bit about the background of this album, it still leaves me cold.
I´ve heared band and album for the first time but really nothing remarkable for me.
This sure was a ride to listen to. Its experimental to say the least. Pretty slow with good vibes but nothing that compels me to listen to it again. The title track had a nice story in the lyrics and probably the song I would most likely listen to again if I had to.
I don't know... kind of pleasant. Kind of weird. Too naval-gazey for me but I do like the vocals.
If doing too much were an album then this takes the cake. Easily the most wanky album I've heard to date. Top 0 Favorites: Top 1 Worst: Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. Pt 2 2.50/5
Tedious
Maybe a 2.5… the songs that I liked id listen to again but this is the first album I’ve wanted to skip songs
S glazbene strane, ok su mi Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell i zadnja, Approaching Pavonis.
Someone needs to tell these hipster bands to cut the synths. This album has some moments, but it's a one time listen for sure.
Sorry but I don’t care about your sad songs about a robot-fighting anime girl or whatever.
Had a childlike dream quality to it. That same quality caused me to loose focus on a lot of the album
It’s like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife.
Underwhelming
A little boring
24/10/24 I appreciate this was something at the time, but it was just SO boring.
not my type of thing, but super cool and interesting concept. some songs were really nice, almost muse-like
Atmospheric, but also twee and monotonous.
I can't say I particularly enjoyed it, also some of the tracks were so annoying
Didn’t enjoy this. Can’t really see the reason why people hype them.
Pretty rogue - all a bit weird but fairly decent. Not really my sort of music but can kind of see the appeal.
I can’t help feeling like this album is just… shallow.
Meh. Do you realize is a banger tho.
goofy, corny
started out with an interesting sound.....then 2nd half just felt really boring. don't get it
flaccid, boring, safe there isnt much interesting going on there at all NNN
Interesting use of binaural/stereo effects, but overall a not really my style.
Groupe totalement inconnu. Quelques morceaux originaux. J'ai apprécié : In the Morning of the Magicians - ligne de basse Are You a Hypnotist??
Ironic that it has “robots” in the title because this album droned on and on and on. Reviewed 10/09/2024
not my thing, i can't even imagine the mood i'd have to be in for it to fit whatever this album is trying to convey still, some parts of the instrumental are enough to pick this album up and raise it to a 2
Solid Meh.
Too much going on. Lyrics are hard to hear on many songs cause of overproduction and effects. Overall just okay. 2/5 Probably won't listen again
A couple of good songs but a bit of a drag imo
A bit too self indulgent
Quite dull.
God this was a slog, so monotonous.
I don't know the Flaming Lips that well but this wasn't really what I expected for some reason
Did mowing the lawn seemed like it took forever because of this album? Or because I wanted to play Fortnite with my friends? Can’t it be both?
Songs are very repetitive, lyrics don’t really make sense. Musical talent of the group was evident though.
Boring AF.
Reminds me quite a bit of David Bowie, but maybe with some more focus on the vocal. The acoustic guitar with the electronics makes a very distinct contrast. I find the concept of the album interesting but I don't think I'll listen to it again Standouts Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2 All We Have Is Now 2/5
This one is just outside my scope of musical appreciation. I guess I'm just not musically broad enough to appreciate it. That was rather diplomatic, wouldn't one say? :-)
I bought this cd when it was first released. I did so after hearing Do You Realize?? on a commercial. This concept and themed album is a fun listen. I definitely need to be in a certain mellow mood to enjoy.
Not as horrible as I was expecting so that's something. 2.42
I'm a fan of a lot of artists in the same sphere as The Flaming Lips, but just can't get into them. It just isn't for me.
Bit too psychedelic/experimental
2+
I'm suprised this album is from 2002. It has this rockish 70's vibe. I kinda like it. Toptracks for me: Fight Test, One More Robot, Egotripping at the Gates of Hell og All We Have is Now
Eh
# 243 : Boring Hipster Music. Too slow, Sloppy and badly done
Very mellow. Some good songs some weird ones.
Felt “other worldly” with the electronic elements sometimes I felt like R2D2 was in the background. Haha. I did like “Do You Realize” I recognized from somewhere although I can’t place it.
Not my fav
I don't know what to say about this album - it was a bit meh as an overall experience but at the same time it wasn't too bad just music-wise. I would say that it was a bit mid, nothing too exciting.
kind of boring
More of the concept album than pop. The first song “borrows” too much from Cat Stevens which is very distracting.
It took me a little while to get round to The Soft Bulletin, but when I did I really enjoyed it. I listened to Yoshimi the day I got it, and… I feel like I’m missing something. I mostly found it just a bit boring and not very memorable. It all seems to blend into one, mid tempo, strummed acoustic guitar lead song with some electronic instrumentation and a guy whining in the background. I feel like I’m being unfair. This doesn’t seem like bad music at all, just a little, uninspired. Maybe I need to give it more time to really settle in, but I also just, can’t be bothered to listen to it again?
perdonatemi amanti del genere, ma proprio it’s not for me
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots is another one that isn't for me. The styling of indie rock mixed with experimental electronica to create this curious sci-fi type sound in places, and the rest being sort of dreamy weirdness, nah, just doesn't tick any boxes for me. Also they completely stole Fight Test off Cat Stevens and didn't improve it either, an inauspicious start in itself, but it didn't lead me to anything else I liked. Wikipedia's entry says "is the tenth studio album by American rock band the Flaming Lips"; it's not rock at all.
Dosyć ciekawe, ale w zasadzie taki popik. 2/5
The Flaming Lips were one of the most perfect bands of the 90s, releasing a string of all-timers from 1990’s In A Priest Driven Ambulance to 1999’s The Soft Bulletin. Eagle-eyed readers may notice that this overproduced and cloying album was released in 2002.
Sounds good
nothing about this one stuck with me to be honest. Like, it was ok, but nothing in particular caught my attention.
Some fun stuff on here, but not really my bag
I understand the hype around the Flaming Lips and I also don’t. Their live shows seem like they are more entertaining than listening to the music but then again, maybe they both need to be experienced together. I’d place the Lips in the same category as The Eels. Musically pleasing, lyrically confusing at times. You can go on a journey with this album but I’m not sure where to. I’d listen to more from them. Choice cut: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt 1
Bleh
I couldn't get with this and I can't explain why. It's like I'm listening to a different song in each ear and can't make sense of it. Maybe under the right conditions or enough listens, but as of now it's unsettling and unenjoyable. 2.3
First listen Saved 4/11 Top track: In the Morning of the Magicians
If rock music were made by NyQuil. Competent acid rock with risks of drowsiness. Feels like they desperately want to be Radiohead/Pink Floyd. As a fan of electronic music, this is the most enjoyable of The Flaming Lips records for me, as the inclusion of the electronic elements makes the sci-fi premise easier to slip into and offsets the boredom of the indie rock a tad.
Sounded ok.
eh the main song is fun and the album is def cool but dont really enjoy it
It was okay. it was a bit too mellow for me and the album felt longer than should've been. Probably won't make it to my collection. Sorry :(
Fairly basic indie. Hated the unnecessary addition of electronic bleeps and bloops.
Nah
Weird spacey trippy music and lyrics- drove me crazy by the end of the album. Sorry but I just don’t get it.
Verstehe den Hype um die Band nicht. Nervt n bisschen nach ein paar Liedern
Hm ich finds recht langwiilig? Iwie chani nütt demot ahfah und finds max unspannend… sorryyyy
boah flaming lips letsts album gar nöd gern gha. fight test findi etz no cute, isch en song und s tönt nöd alles kaputt. one more robot zeigt wieder wie wonky de guy singt äääh nai nöd mis. chords sind zwor easy cool. title track pt. 1. jo da isch würkli nöd mini musig nai. pt. 2. ike viel reso-synths und crushed drums. meh. jo voll kreische hets no brucht ganz vergesse. in the morning.. wiso isch sini stimm so autotune und grüsig??? nai da isch nöd spannend. boah streng. Are you a hypnotist macht wenigstens am schluss en bVI bVII I da goht immer. It's Summertime isch leider nöd de gershwin tune sondern de dude wo chli stöhnt. chords sind zwor wieder sehr nice. gfallt mer allgemein besser als s letste album aber s wirds nöd über es 2 chöne lupfe glaub? da isch aber klar de best bis etz do you realize isch au en ok song aber meh. nöd meeega coool. All we have is now wird schneller ok? ich mag afoch sini stimm nöd mann. so z wenig cool für so melodramatisches züg de letst song macht au nüt mit mir. glaub es 2
Everybody raves about this album, which really makes me question if my dislike for this band (and this album in particular) is irrational. I just can't get into this stuff... Something about it being too relentlessly positive sounding?
Careful that you don't click on the "deluxe" version that has 100 f***ing tracks. It wasn't a bad sound, but it was very monochromatic and quite dull.
It's interesting, it really is. And there are some tracks that I like. But, it's a bit too...I don't know...floaty(?) for me. I wish it had more of a rock edge. Solid 2.5
laaaaaaangweilig
Started well, had high hopes but ended up as another hour of boring plonky indie
Ganz nett. Nichts für mich. 2.
Need to hear it again
listened to the first song it was meh
It was ok. Not really my style.
I wanted to like this album, but only Fight Test and Do You Realise stood out.
2,5
I tried. Just not my thing. Sounds at times like Beck, at times like early Bowie. Weird story about man v machines. I think the girl has cancer. Just couldn’t connect to it lyrically or musically.
The music is cool. Some of the synths get a little repetitive but it's a vibe. Like you're floating through space and time with a robot. I'm not in love with the lead singers voice. Definitely a festival band. Okay, "Do You Realize?" is a classic song. No doubt about that.
I can appreciate the concept they went with. It's very much a story they are telling. It's a high art piece that lost me along the way somewhere. A little too far out and experimental. Some interesting songs in here though.
There was a time, back in the mid-to-late sixties, when I might have liked this concept album. But it would have sounded different back then, because the technology didn't exist to produce psychedelic rock quite so... psychic. The Flaming Lips certainly are masters of the synth. But if you stand back and listen to the overall sound, ignoring the lyrics, the songs tend to sound alike. I don't need to hear the profound thoughts in their poetry, having absorbed the meaning of life from The Moody Blues in much more pleasing packages. But I do see why the young adults of this age like this type of music. You can trip without any lingering ill effects some had back in the day.
"Do you realize?" is solid and nostalgic. Other than that, the vocals sound whiny and once you notice it, that's all you hear. Some good musical moments, but I don't really want to listen to it again. Too much of a 90's angst vibe.
Eh. Boring.
This album was fine. I wasn't familiar with the music but I did like one particular song called "do you realize?"
I don't get that enthusiasm for this record.
I was glad this album was done. Boring.
Meh. 2/5
While most of the album I could do without, there are a few tracks on here that are really solid and worth revisiting
Interesting but did not hold my attention
Fuzzy, popppy rock. A bit dreamy and ethereal.
An old roommate of mine used to play Flaming Lips way too loud when he was banging his art school girlfriend. Was that better than their awkward sex noises? We'll never know but I doubt it, given Wayne Coyne's commitment to off-key singing. There are some cool, cute things happening on this album but not enough to crack my top 1001 albums-to-make-love-to list.
Overplayed
Listened thru car speakers. Not really my style of music but had some catchy melodies and songs. Recognized a few as I knew it was a famous album. Sounded almost before its time with some of the electronic sounds and samplings
I have never really 'got' The Flaming Lips. Completely whimsical and I just don't really see the point. Wasn't unpleasant but there was nothing here that drew me in and made me want to give this much attention. Indie music for people with a 'wacky' sense of humour, I guess?
At first I thought this was going to be quite good, then it wasn't
Didn't hate it but probably wouldn't listen to any tracks again.
2.5. Very soft
There's certainly some stuff that works, but a whole lot more that doesn't work on this album.
I wish i could like this album. I've heard lots about it. I've tried to listen to it before. I made it all the way through this time, and it really didn't do it for me. Do you realize that this album is ho-hum? 2-3 stars, depending on how you wanna compare it to some of the stinkers on this list.
This was a bit too long. Started off stronger, but then by the end I was over it.
It was tough to get into
I guess it's "psychedelic"... Genre -wise it's all over the place. I liked some of it, but it didn't do much for me overall.
It's ok but extremely forgetable
First time through, I didn't really get much from this album. Re-listening this morning, after a late night, I found it to be a nice easy listening album. A little on the mellow side and there is something different about this guy's voice. Can't say I've become a Flaming Lips fan, but this was a nice background album this morning. First song, Flight Test was good and I loved the line, you have the most beautiful face in Do You Realize, another solid tune off this album. Also enjoyed In the Morning of the Magicians This was definitely a unique, mellow sounding album. I don't think I would call these guys rock, but in the end, I thought this album was decent. Ill give it a 2.5 but will score a 2 2
Weird album about robots taking over. First and 5th song good
Indifferent; Cool drum sounds; "In the Morning of the Magicians" sounds like Neil Young's vocals.
I just don't get the love for The Flaming Lips. Like everything of theirs I've heard, it's fine but trying very hard to be clever. I've heard their stage shows are fantastic; that is probably to distract from the music.
Annoying, boring, has no soul.
Very unusual. Genuinely don’t know what to make of this. Catchy in some places, weird in others.
didn't care for it, too indie poppy and weird
That was so boring...
This sounded like it could've been a good album, and some people no doubt enjoy it, but I really struggle with the effect that makes beats sounds distorted. I like clean sounds and I hate it when my hifi is playing up, it niggles me like you wouldn't believe. The beats on the first three tracks are all spoiled by uncomfortable noise. Very clear vocals, nice synth sounds, but horrible sounding beats. Made me want to skip the tracks with that on, and it's on tracks 1-5. Track 6 was lovely.
This album disappointed me. Some tracks offered promise - Fight Test, Are you a Hypnotist? And Do you realise? These I would choose to listen to again. But on the whole, the album was a let down. I wonder if familiarity might improve the score, but the album taken as a whole didn't provide me with enough to draw me in to listen to it again and again.
Quite forgettable, but not terrible.
Decent; 2
A little less boring than I thought it would be but still kind of boring 2/5
I was curious to hear this album when it popped up for the day, as I’ve heard about The Flaming Lips many times, but couldn’t even tell you what type of music they do. Unfortunately it wasn’t my type of music. I can see the experimentation in what they do, but it’s too slow and weird for me. It could make ok background music, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: couldn’t tell you-they all melded together Worst Song: same answer as above Cool album cover though!
It was different
Like random access memories and tame impala had a baby, decently groovy and funky but not quite to my liking. a little bit slow. A good song or two but the rest seemed like filler to me
ok
Boring
I dont usually enjoy the electro-sounding kind of music, but there is one song in particular that makes me feel sad. Almost give the same vibe as Radiohead. I dont remember which one is it but it is a song about imagining the loneliness and the feeling of loss after death. 2.4/5
I like the concept but I think the vocal performance left a lot to be desired and the production was unique as well.
Saaie zweverige rocknummers.
was ok
Meni kovin huomaamatta ohitse, saattaa tosin johtua myös päivän olotilasta.
En kyllä saanu kii mitä musaa tää oli. Ei huonoa, mut ei erikoistakaan. Peruskagonen
I like yo shim I and that’s about it.
I don't like the music. Hard to say why. It's too light and airy, way too many strings in the arrangement - like mantovani with lyrics.
Nope, never been my jam.
Again, a few decent numbers that kept my attention and made me feel like things were going to get good, only to be followed up something crap! 'Do you realise' was the only track I recognised and is okay. Overall.. urgh, not great!
It was ok I could hear how that would do well but not for me.
Whether their childlike grasp of what's a song and what's simply atmosphere is naturally occuring or carefully cultivated, it's mildly alluring even while it's a sticking point I'll never get past until they do.
Not a good showing for concept albums so far… This was a really meandering effort from a group I was only somewhat familiar with beforehand. While the kitsch quirkiness is often highlighted as one of the albums greatest strengths, it started grating on me almost immediately. Part of this is down to my inability to believe Wayne Coyne is actually playing it for laughs - he takes himself way too seriously which betrays the overt silliness of this record. The one saving grace I had read from many other negative reviews was the track “Do You Realize??” on the latter half of the album. But there was no redemption to my ears, it falls into the same lumbering anonymity you would hear on a call centre waiting queue. In a word, bland.
Nicht so meins…
I enjoyed the spacey and out of this world sound of their music. However I couldn't stand how whiny the main singer's voice was. It was ok for a couple of the songs, but it got old quickly. I may still check out their other work?
Listened to first 3 tracks, did not retain my attention, lack punch and hooks
Ikkje helt for meg, men behagelig og chill (2,5 /5)..
I enjoyed some of the music, there were lots of sound combinations I haven't really heard before. However, the vocal style ruins it for me, it became annoying very quickly. I found myself telling the vocalist to shut up so I could listen to the cool musical effects without them interrupting.
not bad. kinda vibing out to the opening track. ok second track is.... not as great. yeah i am.... def not a fan of this. whatever this is even considered. idk man. like it's nicely done but i just can't take a whole album of this lol. sorry.
It's... okay?? It's interesting enough, but not engaging enough. A cool concept, some parts could be could be great, but wholly forgettable.
I really enjoyed the opening track for this album, but it fizzled out for me after that. Fuzzy and yet digital, retro and yet space age-y, upbeat and yet dreamy, this album merges some of the best of more modern electronic pop music with the psychedelic rock of yesteryear. Definitely not bad, but not particularly stand out, either. I would listen to this as background music, but that’s about it.
Can’t quite put my finger on it but something about these guys has always bugged me
Chapped
Probably not bad, But Spotify has shoved this Down my throat a while. 4/10
raspy voice. not smooth
Little interest
not really a fan the first song sounds like a cat Stevens remix
Experimental, interesting, but ultimately unsatisfying!
Self indulgent twaddle. Has not aged well, contrived lyrics about robots.
Are these lyrics written by Owl City?
Not bad I guess? But I was expecting more on the psychedelic side. 2.4/5
Too spooky for me
Some songs
The reason this band only ever achieved middling success is because they're not very good. So how the hell they have two albums on this list is beyond me. They always try a little too hard to be weird for the sake of being weird. And here, they're trying to be Radiohead and failing miserably. Also: Leave Cat Stevens alone!
Ugh. I made it through it but nothing was noteworthy. No need to listen.
Meh
Tried to get into this one a couple of times but couldn't. This kind of concept album can be interesting, but it's got to be musically interesting enough to make it enjoyable
5/10
Not much excited me about this album. It wasn’t awful either.
I wanted to like it! It was more interesting than I was expecting, but I still really didn't like the sound. It was crunchy on the inside of my ears, it was very unpleasant. but an extra point for being interesting.
Sober review: Not really impressed with the album, started strong and then really slowed down after the robot fight song. Felt like elevator music mixed with plastic beach backing tracks. Need to be on acid for a fuller musical experience
Ambitious experimental rock project. Almost good, but comes up short.
Didn’t enjoy that really at all. Not my sound.
Experimental electro rock. Weird kooky concepts. But not very good.
false
.
I expected more from the name and the album art
