Classic rock n Roll! 3.5 stars for me.
Can imagine the kids in the 50s loving it. Probably very novel for that time.
"Tutti Frutti" as an opener is a good choice. Whole album is classic 1950s, but the good kind.
Full of energy and pretty fun, but gets tiring very quickly. Was apparently a big deal at the time of it's release, but there's little reason to listen to it now
Hits
So much energy and fun!
I loved the energy and the recording, which is just perfect for its era
Really good album, I can imagine this being big at the time. I had a fun time listening to it. I had never listened to him before.
Bra driv på gutten. Solid stemme.
This album makes me want to hit a illegal speakeasy in a relaxed suit.
Great fun songs and happy vibes throughout the album. I had a really fun time listening and loved his voice!
This is where it all started, the roots of rock and roll. Staying power, influence in buckets, hits and energy. Classics like "Tutti Frutti", "Ready Teddy", "Long Tall Sally" anchor a solid solid debut album by an icon who reshuffled the deck when this one was released. He was likely hated by parents in the same way Motley Crue were in the 80's or Metallica was in the 90's. You still hear a number of these songs in movies, ads, etc. All short and to the point, no messing around. By the end of the album you're a little worn out. I see the need to include this on the Top1001 due to influence alone but the hits help secure it. A little one dimensional but worthy of 3.5 stars.
Listens: 1 Standout tracks: Tutti-Frutti (obviously), Ready Teddy Proper rock and roll. It's too bad I think virtually all of the songs sound the same. There's obviously a little nuance, but it's pretty consistently the same material. Also, crazy short album; not ever 30 minutes of material. I'm also pretty sure my father took me to see Little Richard in the summer of 1998, and the only thing I distinctly remember is him telling the crowd to "Shut up"... That's his schick, apparently. 3.5
6/10 Moves fast and was fun. Good stuff 4-28-2025
Nog een keer fatsoenlijk luisteren
Pretty good classic stuff. A little repetitive however.
It definitely belongs on this list, and it holds up reasonably well. It's an important part of rock and roll history, but I don't think I'll come back to listen.
this is what Elvis wanted to be! This was a fun album to listen to. I knew a few songs and even the ones I didn’t were good. Prince definitely got a lot from little Richard.
It's undeniable that this was a groundbreaking, massively influential album. And it's hard not to be pulled in by Little Richard's energy and bombastic delivery. But to my modern ears, most of the tracks on this album sound the same. Standout track: "Tutti Frutti"

Historically important but very predictable 70 years later. All 12-bar blues progressions. Great performance though.
Not bad, lots of energy, just not my thing
Didn’t realize the impact Little Richard had on rock until listening to the album.
Long 2 albums. Second is a bunch of different takes of some songs - if you're interested in recording or just a huge little richard fan - this is probably awesome
It's short just around 30 minutes. Listening to it is fun. Little Richard just goes for it on most tracks. Then you realize it's just an album of singles because that's how it was it was done then. You can hear the blues in the songs, but it's done in a such a way that it doesn't feel like a blues album. You can see how much of a lasting impression Little Richard has had on music. It's worth a listen but don't be too chocked if you don't revisit it.
I like it and I tried to lock in but I can’t listen to this while I work it feels like im a clown
Tutti Fruti
It’s alright. Classic voice.
Tutti Frutti, oh Rudy
50s rock n roll. Some good tracks, fairly standard otherwise. Lots of 12 bar blues Vocals are pretty impressive. Precursor to James Brown and that style Best track (other than Tutti Frutti) - Rip it Up
I enjoyed this. At only 30 minutes in length, I appreciated a type of music I don't usually listen to. Any longer and there would have been trouble! Obviously a pretty influential artist.
Little and Richard, I mean short and fun!
Enjoyed this. Short and snappy.
Heard all my life, can appreciate it for what it is...won't put on though.
Little Richard is a force and a fascinating person. This album is an intense and powerful break with the a lot of the popular music that came before it. That said, a little goes a long way. I can’t hear the album in its proper context - I can only hear it in comparison to all the music that came afterwards, much of it probably influenced by Little Richard. But because I can’t hear the album in its proper context, I struggle to fully appreciate it. It’s loud, brash, the songs a little too much coming one after another in the early morning. My favorite is the more down tempo, bluesy Can’t Believe You Want To Leave.
Yeah, I'm not really into Little Richard (I just find shuffle beats and the standard blues progression a little boring at this point) but I acknowledge that he had an important place in rock n roll history.
Good stuff, but not something that I would listen to on the regular.
It was fine and early rock example. They all kind of sound similar
Keith - 7/10 Ross - 6.5/10 Caylum - 8.5/10
it was ok but they all kind of sounded like tutti frutti
ldefine nuance..
Good!
It's obviously dated, but this is in the category of foundational albums. I probably overrate the '50s and early '60s albums on here, but it's honestly usually just fun stuff. Little Richard is able to capture an impressive amount of energy in a recorded album. The pace feels almost frantic at times, his vocal riffs keep you on your toes (though they go a bit overboard at times). This feels like a real crossover point for like early jazzy R&B music and early rock music. You can kind of feel the influences from both sides. This falls a little short of some of the other albums of the time for me, but it's still an enjoyable one with a few of his most famous songs. A good listen. Since this is my first Little Richard album on here, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole on his Wikipedia page. It's...something. The guy had some serious issues handling his sexuality, we'll just leave it at that for this review. Favorite song: Tutti Frutti Other: True Fine Mama, Ready Teddy, Baby, Slippin' And Slidin', Long Tall Sally (The Thing), Miss Ann, Rip It Up, She's Got It 3/28/25
6/10, like yes hes an icon but AABA can really only get you so far 😭 some sick ass bari solos throughout though, loved slip and sliding but tutti frutti 🔛🔝

Folks, here's rock n' roll. To give this record anything less than 5 stars would be narrow-minded considering the massive impact this man had on an entire musical genre. But I'm a spoiled millennial who's had the pleasure of hearing a lot of music in my time, and after the sixth track of 12-bar blues and "WOOOOs" I was ready to rip my ears off.
Transcendent 5-star talent, repetitive 3-star record.
Great fun, high energy, but no further ideas after about track 2.
Good old foot tappin rock n roll. Lots of familiar songs.
I know this is hugely influential on the music made over the next decade, but it's not my favourite. I do like Little Richard's energy.
Its Little Richard. Reptitive and a little wild but iconic
Just good 50s music. idk if it’s the genre or the time, but a lot of the songs sound similar
Fun and fast paced. There’s a reason why Little Richard’s music is still around today. That said the songs tend to land on the repetitive side which lessens the enjoyment of the full album.
neat. sounds like '50s music, that's for sure.
While looking for work.
Little Richard is fun. I don’t listen to him much, but I did enjoy this for the most part—especially the few piano bits!
It seemed like every other song was just Tutti Frutti. While Tutti Frutti was good, it isn't that good.
Ganz okayish.
As expected, piano riff woo music, I liked it
Little goat
Anything prior to the Sixties on this list is pretty much up my alley. This one too. I can just barely imagine it sounding fresh. Great vocal performances on every song, even if other aspects of the songwriting seem super contrived. I’m sure that’s the Seinfeld effect.
I liked the songs but they were so similar. Would have been nice to change up the tempo on more of themand if there was more musical variety I’d have given it a 4.
it’s rock and roll
Filled with little quick quips of soulful singing over danceable instrumentation. A fun album that treats itself as a reward song after song instead of a chore!
Nothing to say really. Pretty much exactly as I expected, as 1950s pop has literally 0 variation between songs. Voice is quite powerful and certainly works for this style a lot. Just glad songs aren't too long. Favourite songs: ready teddy, rip it up (i think this one is different a bit). Overall around 5/10
Arguably the first true Rock & Roll record. And, as per usual with the genre, every song is essential the same with slight variation and different lyrics. I understand the huge influence this had on popular music, but it's been done way better (and also way worse) later. Key tracks: Tutti Frutti
Fun one with a lot of energy. Listened to: grocery shopping. Favorite tracks: Tutti Frutti, Can't Believe You Wanna Leave
All of the songs sounded the same, and that’s not a bad thing.
On the surface, this sounds like your standard late '50s boogie-woogie piano-driven Rock N' Roll record - infused with various big band and jazz sounds. It makes sense, this was a genre Little Richard was a pioneer of. Maybe the standout here was Little Richard's vocals, they're sharp, guttural, and vicious. In the mix here, they're piercing - just listen to 'Can't Believe You Wanna Leave', 'Jenny, Jenny' or, especially, 'Ready Teddy' which may be my favorite song here. It's in many ways as cliche as this sound gets, with the breaks, repetitive melodic hook, and danceable groove, but god does it sound good. 'Slippin' And Slidin' (Peepin' and Hidin')' I feel similarly about, a fun-sounding track with this very playful core melody. Nothing else here really gripped me musically. The songwriting wasn't very interesting and the song structures follow your typical blues style. The brass sections were relatively subdued, which I liked, but they tended to blend in with one another. But even with all that said, I'd still say it was an insightful 30-minute album, one that speaks to Little Richard's importance in the creation of rock music as we know it.
nice
i liked this more than i thought i would honestly
I believe this album was an game changer for many people
Little Richard is an obvious legend and hugely influential when it comes to rock and roll. that being said, i don’t see myself coming back to this outside of enjoying the novelty factor
Rock'n'roll at its old schoolest. Nothing wrong with it you know.
Every song does kinda sound the same (although it is a decent enough song). Makes me feel like I’m living in a black and white world and want to dance in an American diner in the 50s
He really goes for it
I appreciate what he did for music but it doesn't hit the spot for me entirely.
rock n roll
This was really cool to finally listen to. I had obviously heard some of it, but it was great to listen to the whole album. My rating is solely based on my enjoyment listening to it because who am I to critique Little Richard? An inarguably influential album that shaped modern rock music.
Little Richard certainly does have a lot of energy. The album opens with a bang with Tutti Frutti. Richard’s has a great voice. He rarely holds back. The music isn’t revolutionary but it he energy sets it apart. 6.1/10
Very good
It’s a solid rock and roll album. I wouldn’t go out of my way to play it again, but if I was at a sock hop this would get everybody dancing.
Pretty good. Pretty dated sound with that basic rock n roll style but that's to be expected from the 50s. 2.5/5 -> 3/5
The songs are all very short. It’s not my favorite genre of music. I would not listen again.
It is hard to deny the influence this record and Little Richard in general has had. However, there is only so much variation you can have within a twelve bar blues structure and eventually the album got quite boring.
Ready Teddy and Long Tall Sally personal faves - not an album I would necessarily revisit as I feel like this era of music is best on like compilation albums to filter out stuff that wasn't super timeless, but props for fun/upbeat/inventive music
The guy loves singing about chicks, which you have to respect
pretty cool
Short and sweet. This is some good 50s that just gets you tapping. Not really any depth to it but there didn't need to be, just a fun time. I remember singing tutti frutti in an elementary school concert, I'd be interested to hear our rendition against that of Little Richard.

3.5 Fun
Love and grew up on this kind of music. However this genre of music definitely falls under the "every song sounds the same". So while I loved it I wouldn't listen all in one shot like this again.
I enjoyed this, would listen again
Good, but not my style
He's so unusual.
You know, it’s pretty good. Well performed. The songs are catchy and fun. Dude’s got a good voice and good performance energy. It’s just that old-fashioned rock and roll is not my thing.
He was wild, he was brash, he was almost as weird as Screamin' Jay Hawkins. He frightened the white folks. For all that, he is memorable, but please don't make me listen to an entire album.
Nice but a lot of it sounded rehashed
Bangin' piano.
It was okay. Its an early rock and roll album so most of the songs sounds the same.
A master class in soul with all of the hits we all love. Great energy and rhythms, paired with an exuberant and passionate voice. This is a really fun listen.
Joa ne
Very energetic and fun. It's weird hearing him talk in between tracks, because his natural speaking voice is so high.
interesting theres fade in fade outs between the songs. kinda robs it of an album feel, but i doubt that was the intention to make something album oriented. kinda repetitive, but still enjoyable.
Old school. Took me back to my childhood.
It’s a good album but I don’t know if I’d listen to it on my own.
Lots of sounds here that I think became common after - would have been an awesome live show
This is probably the most important record in this entire collection, if not the most important it's at least in the top 5. Without this there's no Beatles, there's no Stones and definitely no Elvis (lol). However, as with every proto-record, it's not as good as what will come after it. The 12 songs are not even "basically" the same, they're exactly the same so I do appreciate that it's not an hour long record. The energy is amazing, Little Richard is still one of a kind and his vocals are absolutely bonkers, this one is definitely a must listen for every rock aficionado. It didn't really speak to my 20-something year old self, but I can still appreciate it for what it is. No best/worst song for this one because they really are identical in every single possible way. 3.4/5
This is the one with "Tutti Frutti". Little Richard's Rock 'n' Roll remains as virile as when it premiered; full of swagger and optimism. Because of it's 12 bar blues structure, the songs don't tend to be all that interesting, which means Richard's vocal performance has to carry most of the songs. For the most part he does. His energy is infectious. An innovator who is absolutely essential to understanding contemporary music. RIP - Little Richard.
3.5★. Imagine how hard this must have slapped on the jukebox.
well that was fun! little richard’s influence on the beatles and thus on rock & roll is foundational to the genre so it’s fun to hear that. his energy is incredible…yeah, the songs all sound pretty much exactly the same, but it’s FUN and SEXY!!! this is music for dancing. it ain’t complicated but i had a good time.
I think a lot of blues of this era kinda just sounds the same to me. So it was pleasant listening to have on in the background but I don't have a lot of strong feelings about it.
"Tutti Frutti", "Long Tall Sally", "Rip It Up", "Ready Teddy", "Jenny, Jenny"...
This is actually quite a fun album. Definitely very dated, and definitely lacks diversity. But it still has its place in music history as one of the most influential albums ever made. But being influential doesn't automatically mean it's going to hold up to today's standards. I'm definitely glad I've heard it though.
I love Little Richard’s voice, it’s so powerful, like he sings with his whole body - heart and soul! The upbeat swing and jazz of his songs are infectious. The only demerit I give this album is about the homogeneity of the songs. Maybe it’s because of the era of music this was created in, but I feel like all 50s music sounds the same - sock-hop swing. It was a lot to listen to but doesn’t fully detract from the album because Richard’s talent is the shining factor. Overall rating: 3/5 Fave song: Oh Why? Least fave song: Rip it Up
Good but not really my thing
How are you gonna hate Little Richard? It's a jive and you can absolutely hear the driving of this album lead towards the original Rock and Roll. Between Fats Domino and Freddie Mercury energy, though closer to the prior than latter
Not my genre, but alright
First time listened to this album. Listened once with "original audio" and once in the "Deluxe Edition". It's less than a 30 minute listen! I can't imagine what it must have been like to first hear Little Richard in 1957. Although his music is rooted in the newly birthed rock and roll style, his audacious performance must have blown people away. So although this album is a little repetitive and not something I'll listen to regularly, it's a significant statement from early rock. "Well I saw Uncle John with bald-head Sally. He saw Aunt Mary comin' and ducked back in the alley."
It's good but not something that I'd listen to.
Respect for Little Richard's style, delivery and showmanship. Not something I'll listen to often but his influence on generations of artists is pretty amazing.
This is fun and high energy. It's also a bit dated at this point, so it doesn't today have quite the same impact that it did at the time, so I'm not as interested in listening to it in large amounts, thus I didn't rate it higher. Another critical album/artist in the history of music though, so glad to see it here. Also fun: Jimi Hendrix was in Little Richard's band for a while.
Had listened to this once before...enjoyed it much more this time around. Had to be crazy hearing this in the 50s...must have sounded like it had arrived from another planet.
Little Richard has driven the development of music with this album in particular. Some of it is still good to listen to today. All in all, I probably won't listen to this album more often. 3/5
No me dice nada especial. 3
Fast and fun rock n roll. Important stuff...not all so catchy tho.
Iconic
groovy
Zelfde verhaal als met Buddy Holly. Vind 50s wel even leuk voor een paar nummers, maar ja niks dat me echt per se boeit
Was fatoe maar ook repetitive
Very fun but every song is essentially the same
Tutti frutti is the banger, the rest is the same or passable
Fine, don’t love it though.
The template for rock and roll to follow. A great collection of tunes! But I do find a bunch of filler is on this too. 3.5/5
Not really my style but all these songs were good
Fun! And of course groundbreaking. Just found a whole album a bit much for me.
Top marks for any album with a song about Jenny… however… I liked the album and it was fun but I felt like each song was basically exactly the same with different lyrics. Some great well known tracks and definitely fun but not a top scorer.
Do-wap-ba-ba-doo-ba-ba-da-bam-bang Oh yes, music history was made with this. Great stuff. Very fun to listen to, listening to history, rather than good music.
Very nice collection of yelp-y, piano bashing early rock'n'roll. Goes a bit too far to call this an album; it's a handful of singles and their b-sides basically. Energywise it just has one level all the way through but in small doses this is lots of fun.
Based purely on my actual enjoyment of this album, it would be a 2 star serving. But considering the history, I added a bonus star to make this 3.
I like Little Richard, and I own his greatest hits album. He was a talented singer and a great performer. But musically, most of his songs sound very similar. Seriously, you could sing the lyrics of most of his songs over any of his other songs and barely notice a difference. I'm good for 3-4 songs at a time, but then I just get bored. Even with every song being under 3 minutes and the whole album under 30, it still felt long. Historically important. Incredibly talented. Deserves to be on this list. But just not that much fun to listen to for a full album (I bet the concerts were fun, though). 3/5
Fun. ‘Piano riff wooo’ is a classic!
I can understand why it would be influential, but can’t say I had a massively good time with it. Think I’m spoilt by modern recording quality but taking it for what it is, gets a middle of the road score. I didn’t love it but I at least understand why it’s on the list. People in the 50’s probably went wild for it, and I’m sure it’s been used thousands of times for tv and film set in that period.
Good fun but repetitive.
Sure, the whole album is just Little Richard doing his one thing, but he does that one thing with enough power and conviction to earn himself a solid three stars.
A legend and massive influence on a lot of music following. Album was quick and toe tapping!
Not my thing but cool life story
classic but doesn't hold up to today's standards imo
Honestly got tired of his screaming style of singing on some of the songs it was kinda grating
For what this is it’s a 4 or 5 out of 5 Compared to all the music I’d listen I’d give it a 3.5/5 Still some great tracks!
Every song sounds the same but not in a bad way. His energy is infectious and his voice is stellar. Just some old timey rock n roll that bob seger won't shut up about.
It's fine, rotational for variety's sake as opposed to being outstandingly good
This was a fun listen — very representative of its decade. But I can’t help but feel like I listened to the same song a dozen times with a different generic woman’s name plugged into the chorus. WooOooOooOoo!
I'm going to have Tutti Frutti stuck in my head all day, aren't I... This album was good. High energy, familiar songs, definitely danceable. The length was just about right, it didn't feel like it overstayed its welcome.
Fun and bouncy acoustic rock music. B
Great vocals and piano but got a little repetitive 7.1
fine classic rock n roll
5 of the tracks are pretty much the same song, it's a good song but not quite the classic I was expecting
i just know the gym workouts went crazy with this shit on the speakers 2.75 from a purely musical pov since its literally just the same song for 30mins but his voice is grandiose do yourself a favor and watch some little richard interviews bc this man is hilarious
Jenny, Jenny was a fun surprise
Just a bit repetitive (some songs are exact copies), but definitely a step in the right direction toward good music
A pioneer, even if it's not really my thing.
It's a flash to the past. The music is fun
Very nice
good album
Can't explain why, but this was much more fun than other rock n roll records of its time.
Fun and bouncy acoustic rock music. B
This is so weird to review. Clearly skilled and influential and changed the course of music. Heading it almost feels like background noise when the songs are so commonly known. Great for a debut album and completely makes sense to be on the list, but it isn't something I would want to put on often.
This album was really fun and fast paced! I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Some of the songs sounded pretty similar and often the lyrics got a little repetitive. Maybe that's just a feature of music at the time?
ich kenn vo ihm eig nur tutti frutti und da isch s erste lied okay. ich glaub da album chamer nöd beurteile uf wie guet ischs objektiv musikalisch. viel zu revolutionär und rocknroll hets au nöd us de 50er gschafft. aber ohni hets alles andere nocher nöd geh. slippin and slidin het recht en geile groove well kikdrum macht chli öpis speziells. long tall sally isch nice, sin schrei isch scho huuere geil. mit de ziit wirds eehner langwilig findi. er isch scho guet aber jooo, isch halt immer biogie woogie. rip it up hetmol gitarre au cool. und isch chli ruhiger. findi nice. isch immerno afoch de glich song wie alli andere eigentli
This isn't bad - I just have trouble telling the difference between any two songs in this style.
Fav: Ready Teddy Least Fav: Miss Ann Decent, but all of the songs almost blend into one. Hard for me to differentiate.
Short but fun
Not my personal favorite but this album did show me the power of the early days of music
tutti frutti - 3/5 true fine mama - 3.5/5 can’t believe you wanna leave - 4/5 ready teddy - 4/5 baby - 3.5/5 slippin and slidin - 4/5 long tall sally - 4/5 miss ann - 3/5 oh why? - 3.5/5 rip it up - 3/5 jenny, jenny - 3.5/5 she’s got it - 3/5 overall rating: 3/5. good catchy songs but they were all really short so kinda hard to keep up with what i was listening to
Solid listen, a lot of fun, felt a little dated but I enjoyed it more than I expected.
Little Richard can belt it with the best of them. This is some OG Rock n Roll with lots of heart and soul. An r&b band with some swing backs Littke Richard as he rips quick, blocky, unsyncopated piano line - which along with his voice - is the real source of fury. It feels like they didn’t know how to appropriately capture the intensity and volume of his singing. Some solid, classic songs, but also not everything stands out here as unique or memorable…it’s all a bit samey sounding and only the best rise to the top. But what an innovator and influence in the history of rock.
3.5 rounded down i can definitely see the influence but i also can’t rlly see myself relistening to this as a full unit a whole lot highlights: tutti frutti, ready teddy, rip it up (sep 25 2024)
I can see why this was a big deal back in the day. It deserves a thorough listen but I just didn't have the time unfortunately.
It's fun rock and roll.
Some well-known songs like "Tutti Frutti" but over all bit too aged and bit too same same for my taste. 2,5
It’s sometimes hard to listen to these super old albums in a comparitive context that this list forces. Like, this doesn’t sound anything like Lorde’s Melodrama. But there are some cool things to be heard, like how the black social struggle was represented by Little Richard, and how it shares some base similarities with how it’s presented in music now. Anyway, he’s very energetic, it’s fun to think that this was the cutting edge of pop performance back in its day
Great album, a little slow in parts
Pure joy listening to the beginning of it all. There is. Clear formula throughout this set of songs.
The music has a very fun and energetic feel to it throughout.... honestly, I was surprised at how dark the lyrics to some of the deep cuts are ("Oh Why?", for example). Also: "Rip it Up" kind of slaps.
That sure is Little Richard!
that was hard to get through, blues after blues after blues
Its good but u gotta be in the mood for it
It's pretty fun. Every thing pre 60's just sounds old though. Will I listen to again: 10%
love the energy, but you can only listen for so long...
Du bon petit ba be dou da
Great songs, but too many versions of the same ones on this album (Apple Music).
Little Richard brings a very fun energy and his awesome, unique voice to this collection of songs. In the 50s, I'm sure this was seen as an evolution of what music could be, even if now it seems sterotypical. My main gripe woth the album is it's very samey throughout in it's sounds and themes. My favorite is probably Rip It Up, an early "I got Money!" song that you hear everywhere in music today.
Songs that appear in just about every movie from the 1980s. It had some nostalgia and I’m sure at the time the songs were very fresh. At this point, however, I’ve heard them so many times it just seems stale. The songs I hadn’t heard we’re not very impressive to me. 2.5/5
Obviously this early record, and others like it, were a huge influence on what our music is today, and I respect that. But at the same time I'm not really coming back to listen to it again
I can dig it
50s music is pretty samey but at least Little Richard's singing adds a huge amount of energy to the recordings
Obviously dated, but still energetic, catchy and most importantly fun. Not nearly as tedious to listen to as some of the other older albums on this list. Pretty good, some real toe tappers on this one.
Very rad, but a little samey.
3.1/5 listened 4x
Good rock n roll
I mean I get it for its age. It just sounds the same
Similar energy to most of the last few, kind of a fun different jazzy vibe than what I would typically go out of my way to listen to.
Honest dirty fun
What a debut! He also kinda debuted popular music, too. I have a core memory of going absolute nuts as a 5-year-old when hearing Tutti Frutti for the first time at my aunt's. It might have been the song which started it all for me. The songs on the album sound a bit too similar and repetitive, though - it feels like Little Richard absolutely milked the format once he realized that it works so well.
It was alright.
Certainly an important album in the history of pop/rock. I suppose almost everybody has heard at least one of the songs. And at the time it was published it was of course something new, creative and great. Today, though, I do not find it really very interesting. It is ok. It is not bad to listen to. But for me it'll only be a 3.
obviously a classic. I recognize it as foundational. But as far as my personal preferences go...it was just fine.
Classic for what it is. Love his energy.
Great energy, but all the songs end up blending together.
Ah, I feel conflicted rating this - I can definitely see how influential and important it was, and it’s hard to be too cynical about something this energetic and joyful-sounding. Today, though, I was tired and it just didn’t hit right. Sorry, Little Richard. It’s nothing personal.
additional credit for literally inventing rock and roll
Music of the 20th and 21st century probably wouldn’t exist in the same way without Little Richard, so there is no argument to be made that this doesn’t belong. However, it is the same song structure throughout and is a product of its time.
A '3.5' I reckon.
This starts with Tutti Frutti, continues with songs that sound like Tutti Frutti, and leaves you with Tutti Frutti in your head until the end of time. Infernally catchy, enjoyable but may never listen to it again.
It's okay
It’s obviously seminal in the development of rock-and-roll, and was no doubt groundbreaking at the time, but each song is just more of the same.
I had never heard any song from this album other than the opening track. While it was a decent listening experience, it is not one that I will be coming back to listen to again. I am sure it is an influential album, and it is not a bad one at all, it just isn't my style preference.
12 bar blues wall to wall which gets samey, albeit only for half an hour.
Fun album, likely wouldn't listen to it in full again though.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
Fun in small doses but listening through the whole album was almost tiring. He is iconicly high energy though!
Definitely some familiar songs. I enjoyed it. It was a fun, peppy, energetic album.
Listening to this album only made me think about people in their mid seventies and older and how they’ve witnessed the entire transformation of rock and roll to this point, with this album being the starting point for many of them. I also thought about this style of rock and roll being retirement age and how that’s fitting because it doesn’t work anymore. It’s a massive influence, I just found it too repetitive and not dissimilar enough between songs. I’m giving it a three because everyone knows Tutti Fruitti and it created a great IHOP entree option.
It's quick, fun, and very influential. I've never listened to a Little Richard album before, but I have heard a few songs. Once you hear one, you've pretty much heard them all. Absolutely iconic, but probably won't put it on again.
It's catchy and Little Richard has a powerful, distinct voice. It's very repetitive without much depth to the lyrics. Overall, all the songs seem to be following the same formula.
Classic Rock n' Roll, hard to hate it but outside of its huge contribution to the music that would come, there isn't anything too special to me about this one in particular. I bet it was wild when it came out though.
Always loved Little Richard's stuff. Great to hear an entire album from him. Seminal and still has that energy he was famous for. Whe n your fans include Elvis and Paul McCartney, you're doing something right.
Energetic and nostalgic
These 50s records are rough - like I’ve heard it all but it’s so dated
Felt a bit underwhelmed tbh
Good voice and one song everyone knows... But somehow, a lot of the songs on the record sound like the first one... Guess that's Blues...
Not really my style, but Little Richard sings so soulfully that I end up getting into it anyway.
I could definitely see this being really good 70 years ago. Not quite my style though I do like the blues.
Here's Little Richard wasn't the greatest album in the world but there was quite a bit of stuff to like about it. Like with all rock and roll albums, it definitely feels like Richard definitely had a lot of fun while writing this because a lot of the songs had a fun tempo and he definitely put quite a bit of effort into his vocals, that i can really appreciate. The songs, admittedly, were a bit samey mostly relying on only two different styles being a slow one and a faster one but thankfully the album was only around 28 minutes long so neither style got too tedious to listen to. This is one album that does it's job quite well. Best Song: Rip It Up Worst Song: True Fine Mama
It’s pretty fun to go back to albums like this that were key players in the early development of rock and roll. It sounds like a really upbeat and high-energy mixture of jazz and blues, but with a really unpolished raw edge to it. You can definitely hear the rebellious spirit that drives the music.
Standout: Tutti Frutti
The instrumentals are basic and very indicative of the era but Little Richard kills it on the vocals and with his energy. I can see how he had so much influence
Not my cup of tea but respect the songs.
Dependably fun
Only for Rock And Roll fans.
As others have noted in review, a product of it's time. I enjoyed the energy, but for 2024, a bit boring. I understand why it's on the list though.
gets kinda repetitive but overall a fun time!
The songs were good and fun, but they kinda all sounded the same with different words. It got a bit boring after awhile.
A rip rocking basis for what rock and roll would evolve into. Great piano based blues. Sounds just started sounding the same near the end of the listen.
this is rlly the blueprint like. without this there is so much that you don’t have. makes me want to go to the damn sock hop. top 3 - can’t believe you wanna leave, miss ann, tutti frutti
When it’s the late 50s and music needed a new direction little Richard showed up and gave an explosive appearance with simple instrumentals and a lot of wooing to create a new pop craze. Little Richard is a pioneer but his music over time feels one dimensional. Understanding his impact is one thing but this isn’t a masterpiece. 6.7/10
Love the odd track every now and then but a while album is a bit much
A wop bop a loo bop a lop bom bom! As much as I love a classic rock and roll track, there's only so long you can listen to a 12-bar blues riff. 3.5
Impossible not to like the rock n roll energy
First time listened to this album. Listened once with "original audio" and once in the "Deluxe Edition". It's less than a 30 minute listen! I can't imagine what it must have been like to first hear Little Richard in 1957. Although his music is rooted in the newly birthed rock and roll style, his audacious performance must have blown people away. So although this album is a little repetitive and not something I'll listen to regularly, it's a significant statement from early rock. "Well I saw Uncle John with bald-head Sally. He saw Aunt Mary comin' and ducked back in the alley."
Fun songs from another era. Not really something I'd listen to today, but I enjoyed the short trip back in time. Rip It Up was a nice lost gem I don't think I'd heard before.
an album made in an era before they invented a second song, bless their hearts
His voice is at 110% every song, so hearing a whole album is a chore
👍🏼
Lots of energy, but it's hard to remember distinguishing songs besides the obvious.
I can hear the influence - sits between the blues and rock n roll and probably carries over to soul and funk. Super interesting to listen to with that lens. Otherwise, probably not something I’d choose again.
3.5
I don't mind this, but I can't help myself from hearing tutti frutti in 1/4-1/2 of the songs on this album. Several songs had the same meter ands music, just different lyrics. It was a good tune, but it was a bit overused. 3/5
This is fun, old-school, very early rock 'n roll, certainly of historical significance. Very radio-ready cuts. But I wouldn't choose to listen to it.
There are some olde time classics here but the sound is so dated, 1958 . I'm sure it was groundbreaking at the time but the terrain has been built on and improved many times since. Poor lad has a lisp. No wonder he couldnt keep a girl in those unenlightened times.
1. Tutti Frutti - Classic, mixing sounds a lot better than I remember. The rests played on the ensemble really make it super punchy. Little Richard's energy and stamina in this track always blows me away. The sax solo also slaps hard. Just a really strong track in general. 2. True, Fine Mama - Classic boogey, nice piano runs at the start too. Backing harmonies compliment the track really well also. Not too much to add about the piece, follows the same formula as the first track, both are very strong. Felt like more could have been added in the instrumental, but overall very solid sound. 3. Can't Believe You Wanna Leave - Great singing, the kinda song i'd imagine would play on the radio all the time. I really feel like a modern microphone would make this track an absolute killer. Would've loved to hear the piano further up in the mix, feels slightly faint at the moment. 4. Ready Teddy - Basically sounds like Tutti Frutti with different lyrics. Sounds great but is something we've already heard. All of these tracks are super radio and promotion friendly, which is both a gift and a curse in this situation. The band sounds very tight together, which is good, can feel the rhythm really well. 5. Baby - Don't know who's singing on this track, but I enjoy the switch up. Very simplistic song, I like the sax motifs in the background - would like to hear something outside of the 12 bars formula. 6. Slippin' and Slidin' - The keys are doing really well on this one, finding the right gaps to play into. One of the better arrangements on this album, can't really add anything else about it. 7. Long Tall Sally - Another famous one, the vocals of this track is pretty electric, I can see why it shines a little brighter than most of the other tracks. The drum part of this song is really strong, feels a little further up in the mix than the others which I enjoy. 8. Miss Ann - The groove of this track is quite fun, I wish I could hear more of the guitar, seems very light, wish they'd bring in more of the mids and the bass. 9. Oh Why? - Getting real tired of this formula at this point, but I really like the lyrics of this one, feels like there's a well set theme within this song. The vocal melody of the song is also pretty interesting, develops further than the 12 bar blues chords. 10. Rip it Up - The percussion is pretty cool in this track, feels like a much more stripped back song. Good to see that they are slightly experimenting on ways to play the exact same thing slightly differently. My ear isn't that well trained, but I feel like the majority of the songs are in the same key - just an observation. 11. Jenny Jenny - Not the biggest fan of the falsetto screams. 12. She's got It - Nothing different from any of the other songs, works well on its own and thats about it. Individually, tracks are really strong. However, in a context of an album, becomes uninteresting quite quickly. 5.8/10
Skipped, next album please
Amazing singing voice, but the album starts to sound too samey.
7/10
An important and influential album. Good for its time but not what I want to listen to.
Like a lot of early rock and roll, a little bit of “you’ve heard one song you’ve heard em all”, but at least in Little Richard’s case, it sure is a cool song to hear.
3s across the board. This is quite good and I can understand why it’s on the list but I’d never listen to it intentionally.
I appreciate the influence this might have had at the time it was released but it’s definitely not something I would choose to listen to without a recommendation. It was definitely good and pretty catchy, but didn’t really blow me away.
short and sweet
I like his voice and style, but this album isn't very creative. The basic Tutti Fruitti formula was used several times.
I want to like it, and then halfway through every song I am ready for the next one.
I mean, it's Little Richard. He's real good, but he made music in the 50s. Exactly on par with what I expected and what I wanted.
I definitely see how this is influential. As an album though, it’s not greater than the sum of its parts.
Cute little old American album
it was good
I mean, it was enjoyable enough, but it *did* feel like the same song 10 times if I'm being totally honest >.>
boring
love little richards energy but man... the 50's were not creative in the slightest. This is the same 4 bar blues melody reshaped and repacked over and over again. Like it's a great song! But still...
"Alright guys we got one riff, lets stretch it out for a whole album". This album was FUN but repetetive as hell. I'll admit it coasts on nostalgia for me but you can tell by the end of it they were just out of ideas.
This album “Wop bop a loo bop a lop bom BLEW” Just kidding I like it but I thought of that earlier and wanted to use it. Fun album but almost every song sounded exactly the same.
I like how high octane some of the tracks are, really hyped up energy. I also once again am asking modern musicians to co-opt the big band/hornline sound, it’s very nice.
RnR, Blues, 1957 -> 3
Getsnyou moving but all songs are the same.
...
I don’t dislike it, but I do understand why rock n’ roll struggled with being talen seriouslly before the 60s. It’s a bunch of sexually changed 12 bar blues with sax solos, which is cool, but gets a bit much.
Trying to think of a current performer who does what folks like Little Richard did, where they just bring so much energy and fun, like they're playing a cartoon character. Jack Black? Haha. LR is dope. Nothin but goodness.
It's a bop. I would rank it higher. However, even though it's R&B with heavy emphasis on the blues, it's soooo repetitive in rhythms.
