Reviews (page 11 of 13)
it's like with the beatles or rolling stones self titled except for with soul.
He’s got a formula, fun one though.
Fun, but very short
This the kind of music that makes you want to take your best gal to the malt shoppe and split a soda.
I can’t help but compare Little Richard to Jerry Lee Lewis, as they were both old, piano rockers. I know Richard is held in higher regard, and his influence on music has been vast. I like his music, but hearing it now, it doesn’t have the same oomph as it would have back then. I honestly think I prefer some music of other old R&B and rock acts. But I like this OK.
More Fallout music
Hugely influential, one of the first cross-over artists and OG rock & roller. Obnoxious, weird kid just kept doing what he was doing and helped to found my favorite genre of music.
If it don't fit don't force it 'cause you'll make your mama mad. If it don't fit don't force it 'cause you'll only get in bad.'. Can't Believe You Wanna Leave laat horen dat Little Richard echt een verdomd goeie zanger was. Rating: 8/10 Highlights: Can't Believe You Wanna Leave, Rip it Up, Slippin' and Slidin' (Peepin' and Hidin')
Kind of fun, buy gets a little repetitive.
Recipe for this album: Take blues structure Speed it up Choose one sentence Repeat it over and over Shout "woo" and scream Repeat until you have a full album.
This could be really fun, but not so much at 8am on a Thursday
The fact that Long Tall Sally still gives you a visceral sensation in your spine, 67 years on from its creation, is really quite something, and is most of all a testament to Little Richard's unrivalled vocal power. I've scored it low, because I'm listening with modern ears and a lot of it sounds very traditional and staid, but it's hard to ignore the fact that this will have been like music from Mars in 1957, played by someone from the future.
No songs added 7.3
A fun album, just got that old timey feel I suppose
Akkurat samme sangen hele tiden
It's fine
Great voice, great music. Every song sounds almost exactly the same. 6/10
Historically significant with a few bangers, but many of the songs sound the same.
He has a great voice and probably would have been fun to see live. But for me it’s a little too old times.
Definitely some classics here, and some great energy. But also doesn't really rise beyond feeling like I'm listening to the soundtrack of a period piece like Stand By Me.
Some iconic tunes on this album thatwere more progressive and made more impact that the same era rockabilly tunes from Elvis.
I’m in the late 50’s, eating a hamburger and coke for 5 cents at the local drive in, little Richie comes on, I whistle, life is good. 3.4
As oldies go this is pretty solid. I like the energy of the horn solos
Little Richard rips it up on this one. True old school rock and roll, great piano, lots of screams, simple repetitive lyrics. Doesn’t hold up to time very well (2.6*s)
50's rock. huge influence -better things to listen to these days, but good
I'm not into the slightly formulaic blues (?) structure of 50s rock n roll, but of course this is an important album and still has huge energy and is great fun.
It’s fun, but every song sounds the same!
It was fine.
Made me want to dance, drink, and eat. Clearly influenced a lot. Repetitive and catchy.
fun but old
Very energetic. I’m sure many purist would disagree, but I certainly wish I could’ve heard him through modern music engineering.
I'm too young for this ;-)
early 60s rock n roll. For fans which I am not one. Some of the extra outtakes were ...ok...
ah geez it’s kind of just one tune, isn’t it?
It’s exactly what you think it is-he’s the classic HOO WAH YEAH singer-interesting that he used balling out in the 50s! 3/5
Definitely a one-of-a-kind artist, who changed the trajectory of popular music. The predecessor of what would become rock and roll, this album is a swingin' good time
I'm sure it was a big deal at the time
classic rock n rock !!! 3.5/5
Nothing offensive, but there's just not enough here to really enjoy in the modern day. I'm kind of astounded that music had made such a big jump even between now and the 70s.
A fun ride, nice and short, some of the songs sounded similar. 3.5 in my heart
Little Richard can definitely put on a show.
Little Richard was obviously an incredibly influential figure in the history of rock and roll. And he was seriously good at what he did. However, an entire album of the exact same formula song after song was a bit much. By the end, I was left asking "when will it be done," "are we going to get any variation at all?" The answer to that second question was unfortunately, no. This album has some definite highs. But it's just too one-note on style/sound to go higher than 3 stars.
this album has good energy and was fun to listen to, but nothing i was super amazed by
Call it bluesy jazz or jazzy blues, but these cats are kickin. Perfect for a Doo Wop 3*
Big band supported Wildly scratchy smooth vocals Twisting and rocking
famous, and an important piace of music History, but not the stuff i still like to listen
Got to respect it. It was good, but not amazing.
Little Richard is one of those old school rockers that likely inspired a whole load of musicians. Without people like Little Richard, Buddy Holly and others, it’s easy to wonder how different rock would be today. I’ve not listened to much by him before, so let’s listen! Songs I already knew: Tutti Frutti Favourites: Tutti Frutti I have no doubt that at the time of release, this music would have been mind blowing. However, listening to it with today’s musical palette, a lot of these songs are very samey. If somebody today released an album of almost entirely twelve bar blues tracks, they’d be laughed out of the room. I can understand how time changes things, but listening to this as a full album today does unfortunately make it lose some of its magic.
cute
Absolute Classic
Good
I respect Little Richard for his talent and impact on the music of that generation. But every song sounds pretty much the same with only a few variations in the lyrics and occasionally the tempo. I’m not so sure if that is due to limitations in his talent and ability or the expectations of rock music at the time.
Sensational voice but damn talk about milking one song and turning it into an album.
Pretty fun classic, love his voice
Rating: 7/10 Very good album overall. Loved Little Richard's singing, he sings with a lot of passion and energy. The songs all sounded the same and had a classic rock n roll sound to it heavily influenced by blues. All of the songs are performed with a lot of energy but the severe lack of variety of song structure and sound is what prevents it from being rated higher for me. Favorite songs: Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Rip It Up. Worst song: Baby.
Thinking about other music from this era, this was a markedly different sound. Love the sax!
Thinking about other music from this era, this was a markedly different sound. Love the sax!
Little Richard is great!
A bit samey?
Here he is, bam, and you say goddamn this is a dope jam! I appreciate what Little Richard did I probably won't be reaching for any of his records any time soon. Records this old always just feel like a compilation of singles thrown together way after the fact just so you can buy the music twice...and still he probably didn't see a dime for his work! Banger after banger of just filth! Well it's sort of not so well hidden filth but it fooled enough people! Yeah this is just feel good tune after feel good tune, listen once and you'll feel like you've listened 1000 times
Yeah, this was fine.
Good 50’s rock and roll by an originator.
The classic 50s-to-60 doowop hits most people think of when they think of oldies. Everyone loves Little Richard's "WOOOO!"
this was so much fun! hard not to smile while listening to this and great to get more familiar with this legend. tutti frutti an obvious highlight
Fun and so influential. It was such a blueprint that listening now feels a bit like a caricature. Particularly enjoyed Ready Teddy and Rip it Up.
Don’t mind it. Deserves a spot on the wall though !
Classic blues/rock ‘n roll album.
You expect to see albums like this on the list and it deserves to be here. There's no doubt this was groundbreaking at the time but I do think you had to be there. He's a firecracker for sure, but it's 1 or 2 great songs repeated 10 times just with different lyrics. But it's Little Richard and he's classic, woo!
you arent getting anything insane but it aint bad. i like this genre of music for the most part
3.5
Blind album, know the artist. Happy and upbeat as expected and glad I tried it.
Bangers but high redundancy
Very classic, yet a bit one beat for every song.
Objectively a classic. I'm rating it to my personal tastes, but I still greatly appreciate this music.
Very influential it seems but samey as well. It makes it hard to remember a single song even though it's fun to listen to.
6/10.
Okay I was actually not expecting to enjoy this/even make it through the whole album bc this is not my thing usually, but I actually enjoyed it for a bit. I'm pretty sure there's, like, the same song 6 times in a row and it started getting tiresome, but hey, not bad. Put a smile on my face.
This album will make you just bop and bop. A great listen through and a piece of musical history.
Historic album, but don't want to listen to it again for a while. Some catchy tunes and BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER
Not a fan of 50s rock n roll or Little Richard, but still enjoyed the music in the background. Will likely never listen to it again though
Groovy love little Richard 👾
#91. I can see why this was influential and popular back when rock and roll was a new cool thing, but it doesn't really have the same impact three quartes of a century later. Also it's kinda the same song 13 times in a row. 3/5: yeah.
Meh. A lot of songs sounded the same
Roots of modern rock. Music with movement
Fun music, this guy was wild. Pioneer of rock and roll and conflicted musician/christian. A big influence on the Beatles which is good enough for me! Three stars.
I find it interesting that this style of music was called rock. It is far different than what rock evolved to in the 70's and 80's. I enjoy this style of music but there is only so much I can take.
Didn’t ring a bell but I absolutely know Tutti Frutti haha. An absolute classic - have added to library 1957 Rock album. Rest of album was vibey. 3/5.
Ok
1 dimensional but quite good. Fun old timey background imo
Finally an actual rock n roll album. This one wasn't the most sonically diverse, but the energy across it is extremely welcome.
Really fun music that you could definitely dance to. However, minus 1 point for essentially being the same song listed 12 times.
Tutti frutti
Solid
Classy
Amusant et entraînant. Regisre vocal impressionnant
I appreciate Little Richard as a performer and how influential his music was to the entire genre of rock and roll. He also deserves so much credit for being one of the first black artists to transcend racial barriers of the 1950s. I find his sound so distinct that there is no mistaking a Little Richard song. For that reason, however, I don’t find much variance in his music and the driving beat becomes a bit monotonous. Then again, the 50s were a time when artists would often release a sound-alike follow up to their hit song, so really, it’s fitting for the era. It just doesn’t translate well to more modern sensibilities.
A legend, an album of classics. This is obviously a classic and innovative for its time, but I'm not sure it has stood the test of time. His vocals are outstanding and the instrumentals are bluesy, which I enjoy. For this, this is a 3* for me. Doesn't break into 4-5* territory because musically it follows a lot of well-known patterns to 21st century ears.
Tutti Frutti - 7/10 True, Fine Mama - 7/10 Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave - 7/10 Ready Teddy - 7/10 Baby - 7/10 Slippin' and Slidin' - 8/10 Long Tall Sally - 7.5/10 Miss Ann - 7/10 Oh Why? - 7.5/10 Rip it Up - 7/10 Jenny, Jenny - 7/10 She's Got It - 7/10 TOTAL - 86/120
Well done!
Great album
Fun and was groundbreaking but a bit repetitive
the original smoll pp
- Perfectly fine music - Nothing much to say, some classic 50s swing
Something even the kids will like!
A lot of fun. Zippy with some great songs.
Some great songs. They do sound a lot alike ... but it's Little Richard.
This collection of songs would have been lifechanging to hear in 1957. I can't imagine the shock of hearing Little Richard's ferocity against the clean-cut stars of the times - the polished harmonies of the Everly Brothers or the baritone of Perry Como. It's dated by today's standards but altogether an interesting step back to one of the original rock & rollers. I watched an interview with Jimmy Barnes recently where he claimed Little Richard was one of his strongest musical influences as he grew up. Indeed, while listening to Here's Little Richard, it stuck me how Barnesy ended up with the vocal style he's so well known for today.
I understand this album is the precursor to much of rock music, with tutti fruitti being especially important in that regard, but most of the songs on here sound the same. I really want to give it a high grade for its importance, but I don't feel this album is captivating enough to justify that.
Rip It Up
Nokkur vel kunn lög og örlítið misskemmtileg, önnur minna þekkt og í þeim er rödd Richards á köflum illþekkjanleg (ég þekkti hann ekki í Baby). Lögin sama 12 takta blúsmódelið aftur og aftur, productionin mjög basic, flutningurinn flottur, sögulegt mikilvægi umtalsvert en skemmtanagildi fyrir mig ekki mjög mikið.Þekkt lög og önnur minna, en alltaf sama 12 takta blúsmódelið. Kom helst á óvart að stundum er rödd Richards illþekkjanleg, svo sem í Baby. Productionin mjög basic en flutningurinn flottur. Sögulegt mikilvægi umtalsvert en skemmtanagildi fyrir mig ekki mjög mikið.
I'd rather be listening to Etta James or Chuck Berry.
Pretty great record. The vocals were full of energy and groove. The distinct jazz-y beats and the 50s instrumentals were a great addition. 7/10
Rating this feels like doing a Letterboxd review of that 50 second 19th century film where the train comes straight at the audience.
Ja loev dit man, lekker blues albumpie. FAVO: Tutti Frutti, Long tally Sally, Rip it up, Jenny Jenny
hats off to ol’ rich…he paved the way. but some of these songs are the exact same fucking thing lol
Fun album 3/5
Meh. A few goodies but don’t need a whole album.
3.5 Due must be given to the innovators. Without Tutti Fruitti and Long Tall Sally we don’t have the White Album, Dark Side of the Moon or In Utero.
Sound energetic and exciting, but is on a repetitive side. Little Richard can definitely sing, and it is enjoyable on most songs. On others its a bit of a miss at times. It was kinda fun tho. Significant albums 16/39. Albums I liked 7/39. Albums I have added to my library 1/39. This one: significant, ehh maybe liked?, didnt add.
Most of the song structures here are the same. I understand that these songs and Little Richard himself are very influential, but they are a bit bland compared to todays standards, and a bit bland.
This record is great. Some songs suffer from a repetitiveness (while also sharing the same structure from previous tracks), but definitely not as obvious compared to Chuck Barry of the same era.
Fun listen, though repetitive.
This is essential Little Richard, one of the pioneers of early rock. All of his classics in one place. Half an hour of great blues piano in all of its mono glory. I'm impressed that the remaster sounds so crisp and can hear the drums so prominently but it's an even mix. Lawd help the microphone that recorded his voice! A frenzy of energy and I can imagine the pearl-clutching this music must have stirred up in the day.
Noisiest mf in 1957 6/10
Very fun and easy going. Not super interesting though
Another 50s rock and roll record. Nothing bad to say, it’s good easy-listening music.
Every song is good. Exactly what comes to mind when I think 50s music. I can’t get through the entire album because I get tired of it
Tutti frutti ready teddy Jenny Jenny
This is basically the same song over and over again. Thankfully it’s a fun song
This was okay. You can hear the precursor to later rock and roll in his music. Very energetic. Was enjoyable to listen to in the car. Did not do a focused listening session
3.5/5 Fav Track: I cant believe you want to leave super nice vocals and overall nice sound just couldnt take 50 minutes of it it got super repetitive and boring not much vocal diversity
I can see how this is a pivotal influence on the growth of rock n roll.. but the 50s sound just isn't for me. I can listen to it if somebody puts it on, but I'm not going to seek it out.
This man has ENERGY. A lot of the songs sound very similar in the beats and delivery, but they're still great. 3.5 rounded down.
I’ve always appreciated 1950s rock and roll, but never loved it. I’ve always appreciated Little Richard as a trailblazer, but never loved him. I appreciate that this album is very short and energetic, but I wouldn’t say I really loved it.
Slight variations on a proven formula. A very fun album that makes me nostalgic for a time I never lived in.
Such a legendary figure in rock & roll. Pretty much set the blueprint for rock stars that came after him. It kinda sucks that he was at his prime in an era before the "album" was really a thing. I don't think this album is too strong honestly. There is some filler on here. However, the singles are solid and the influence is undeniable.
You can see the foundation of rock music here, but every song was roughly the same so I don’t see myself revisiting this at all
Its hard to give an accurate read on albums from before the pop music revolution of the early 60s, as they just sound different to modern ears but its solid for what it is. The popular cuts -- Long Tall Sally, Tutti Frutti -- are good stuff
It was fun. I still agree any new band should cover a few of these to get the music in their bones.
Nett
I can hear the talent in the songs and I enjoyed listening to it. However, because the songs have been in so many movies and we've heard the grandchildren/great grandchildren of these once pioneering tunes, they feel lacking to me.
Didn’t have time to listen to it all (cycled to Windsor to meet Dan) but had some Túnez on
Not my favourite genre but can't deny the influence. Also, this one has a bit more snarl to it so it gets a higher grade than previous albums of similar ilk.
So many tropes all started here. Every song is familiar, even if you’ve never heard it before. Will I go back and listen much? Probably not, we’ve come a long way, but it’s always important to remember where you started.
Definitely the 50s kind of sound
Fine
Good album, not much to say except it's funny how clear it is this is before album structure became important, literally just a pile of songs
Quite liked it
3.5
Iconic but not something I would sit around and listen to.
3.5
75/100
- Never listened to a Little Richard album in full before - Not my thing, but have to respect the influence it had on so much music that came after it - Very dated, but it came out in the 50s so no surprise really
All the songs are pretty much the same, but it's good. More bands should have songs as short as these. I like the intensity of the performance. Favorite song: doesn't really matter because they're all the same.
1957. Upbeat. Swing. Repetitive. Short. Saxophone solos.
Sounds like the 50s.
Pioneering sound! Will always enjoy it!
I don't think I've listened to any Little Richard songs since my history of rock and roll class in college. I've probably only heard three or four songs of his over the course of my life, so most of the songs on here were new to me. This album doesn't seem like much by today's standards, but I would imagine that when it came out, it blew people's' minds. "Tutti Fruitti" is iconic, and it still sounds wild and electric almost seventy years after it was recorded. The rest of the album was fine, but nothing else really stood out that much from the rest of the songs. Even though this album wasn't really my jam musically, I can appreciate its cultural significance. I'm no musical historian, but I'm pretty sure no one else at the time was playing at the tempo that Little Richard played at, nor did anyone belt their vocals like he did. Little Richard really earns the name "the architect of rock and roll." He directly influenced so many artists, and those artists went on influence countless others; it's like a pyramid scheme that didn't rob people blind. You can't help but wonder what music would have been like had Little Richard not stopped making music and gone off to study theology.
Technique isn’t everything. He just gives off an incredible energy, like you can see him in full color through the audio. His vocal skill is nearly apparent for the whole album, but is thrust into clarity on the song “Oh Why?”.
Toe tapping tunes, can see how The Beetles took inspiration from Little Richard listening to this.
very consistent. Would happily never listen again, so can't give it a 4.
Crazy to think the lyrical content was considered inappropriate at the time. I want to go back in time and show people Cattle Decap or something. This album is super fun, though. Absolutely love the bluesy sax riffs. Some of the songs run together, so I can't really recommend listening to the album all the way through.
6.5/10. First 3 songs the best.
Good album, not something I'll normally listen to.
A fun album
Pretty fun, not super memorable. 3/5
I wonder if some of his songs were covers, and also of if Elvis copied him?
alright! Some good ol oldies! I didn't finish listening to this whole album but from what I heard, it was a solid album representing some good ol classic oldies.
Richard is good, but a lot of the songs feel the same at this time, so I sorta got bored over the run. Sorry, Richard. 2.75/5
I can appreciate the music, but find that many songs sounds the same.
Everything I expected of it.
I felt like I was hearing the same song trough the album, I like little richard though.
Very catchy
Rock n roll baby. Ös o kul men allt lät likadant. Max schiller vibes endast tillåtet Favoriter: Long Tall Sally, Slippin n Slidin, True Fine mama
Bra album Bästa låt: Tutti frutti
Fun old album.
Ok, a lot of the tracks sound the same, and it's needing better production, but it's very catchy and was very influential.
This is decent enough but it really just feels like the same song over again at different tempos. Apart from the lyrics, could you tell the difference between Tutti Frutti and Ready Teddy?
Was a nice listen. Loving the saxophone jive with the horns as well. Was lacking in bass as a lot of 50/60s albums.
Eh
alfa length, it all sounds the same.
Enjoyable but every song sounds the same with different lyrics.
Great bit of rock, sax throughout is catchy and has a strong presence in the album. 3.5/5
Fun older dance album. I enjoyed it.
Lassic
Overall pretty good. The songs are relatively short and kind of just come at you with breakneck speed. They all sound similar and this album lacks overall depth, but this is a historical moment in music and so old its hard to judge it on a more modern criteria. 3.5/5 Good but probably wouldn't listen again.
Great voice Each individual song is good, but album is repetitive
Alright, that was pretty cool. Got a little samey after a while though.
Influential to rock and roll and his voice is so nice but not my thing generally
one of those albums that feels kind of meh but only because everyone else is standing on his shoulders
Really fun, love his voice. *Can't Believe You Wanna Leave
This was just about what I would expect it to be. Quick, fun and definitely very influential. For me it’ll get lost in the mix of all the truly great albums out there now, though.
Pioneer for many artists
3.5. pretty sick ;-)
Well, let me tell ya 'bout a rockin' man, Whose music's wilder than a runaway van. Little Richard's his name, and he's a real cool cat, His album "Here's Little Richard" ain't nothin' but fat! Wooo! Yeah! Little Richard's on fire, His music takes you higher and higher. It's loud and fun, gonna make you move, With every beat, you just can't help but groove!
Tutti Fruitt and Long tall Sally are absolute classics. It's a shame the rest of the album sounds aged and doesn't hold up compared to those two songs. Big up Little Richard though, great voice.
Obviously important from a historic perspective, but nothing I want to listen to again.
A trailblazer, but didn't set my ears alight.
Cat: high energy and incredible, iconic vocals. The things this man could do with his voice are like no other.
Another 50s album. Little Richard is fun and an early rock star.
Some good clean RnR from a simpler time. Interesting the difference in production quality from song to song. Crazy the difference between 50s production of these types of acts and that of acts just 5 years later that have come on this list. Tutti Frutti is a goddamned jam. A lot of good shuffling music here, but a lot of it comes out feeling the same to me. Going with a high 3. Definitely respect the hustle here setting the stage for so many other acts that followed.
Enjoyable album from Rock'n'Roll's infancy years. Not really my style, or anything I would listen to without this list, but nice enough nonetheless. 3/5
Little Richard doing his Little Richard thing
If I was rating based purely on context, this would be near 5. Not something I’d relisten to though. Rating: 3.2
Fun and colorful
Not for me, decent though
A snapshot of evolution in progress. I realize there’s only so much that can be done with the typical blues progression, but man, this album could have benefited from a few more chord progressions. More than one song on this record felt like “Tutti Frutti Pt2”. I mean, it makes sense - if you’re innovating and finding success, it’s worth iterating on it. Important, noteworthy. Not something I’ll want to dig into much in the future.
Tough to rate objectively when so many of the songs are just zeitgeist now but gotta pick something, right?
Historical, but you can feel his energy blasting through
Pretty repetitive, not bad to listen to but not really standout either. Would put in a driving mix and forget about it.
Classic rock n roll. This is how you make badass rocking music within 2 minutes and turn it into a whole album. All the wannabee British punk bands on this list could learn a thing or two.
Such funky raspy singing voice in a great way Love some old music with simple horns and drums and a baller singer upfront
Tutti Frutti rules 🤘 This shit probably slapped HARD in 57. Thank fucking god we're alive right now instead. While this was probably the Beatles in 57 and I can see the impact it had on them, there is just better shit out there at this point. Still good though.
In reality I'd give this album something like 3.5 stars, but of course that's not an option. It was impossible to *not* move along to the songs. Fun listen :)
El primero de Little Richard, del 57. Bien rockabilly, movidisimo, bien de epoca. Está bueno, medio monótono.
This is alright, pretty fun.
I wanted to like this but the mix oooohhhhh the mix.
Still holds up, kinda
classics
One of the most influencial rock n roll artists of the 50s, you can hear him in James Brown and the Beatles. His energy, speed, and groove was like no other. His wild vocals are the highlight here, but his backing band is able to keep up with him. I especially like the wacky horns and punchy drums. Here is featured one of the most famous songs of the 50s "Tutti Frutti." but it also features several copycats. Even his other famous song "Long Tall Sally" is a bit too much like a knockoff. He's got a technique and formula that works. And with its high energy and short record length, it doesn't come off as too tiresome. In fact, I could see myself adding half of these to a 50s dance playlist even if most don't stand out too well on their own.
Catchy and undoubtedly influential
I think a whole album was a bit much - I think it would benefit from a little (Richard) and often approach.
Decent album but filed under this is a massively influential album for multiple genres of music. Great voice and charisma
Shouty man! But it's infectious, isn't it?
I feel like listening to Little Richard in only a few instances: 1. At a Johnny Rockets 2. In a 50's period piece 3. In a class on the history of rock music. He's definitely incredibly talented and influential, but this is pretty dated and I won't see myself listening to it again.
Old School RnR. Quite ok.
If you've heard at least a handful of other songs from the 1950s decade, you can tell by listening to this debut album from Little Richard that he was onto something special; he was a key person leading the charge in the progression of music toward rock and roll. One rock and roll "technique" that Little Richard pioneers heavy use of here is loud, gritty, wailing vocals, complete with high-pitched "woos" and "hoos"; all of which would become signature Little Richard music traits. I was never the biggest Little Richard fan, but I would say I have grown to enjoy his music at a base level. It is fun and intoxicating in a way; it's no wonder that his pioneering ways caught on. Still, here on this debut album, everything sounds baseline the same to me. I would say Little Richard's debut album deserves a spot on this project, without a doubt, as his effect on music post-1950s is paramount. I would describe my personal enjoyment as still within the 'average' range, though.
little richard? more like little cutie
Was great at the time
Classic, I’ll be listening again
March 2nd
While a landmark record in it’s time, Here’s Little Richard is likely most known these days for the singles that have stood the test of time. Tutti Fruity, Long Tall Sally, Slippin’ and Slidin’, are all songs that still remain enjoyable. However, in album form, they get lost in the shuffle of too many same sounding songs. Richard’s energy is always at an 11, the main star of this show, and the only reason to see it through. For a certain generation, this is a 5/5 album, but only because nothing like it existed before it hit. Rock has evolved so far from it at this point that it’s hard to look past its simple nature. Still fun to play, but not one that warrants many repeat listens.
Little Richard wrote great songs as it is evident on this album. I just don't know if he works on this length because many things sound similar.

fun proto-rock from the 50s kinda like chuck berry 3.5
It's all the same song, but it is Little Richard.
Score: 50 I dont know the history of this album but all I can imagine is a fat bastard producer with a lit cigar and his fingers cradled together menacingly under his chin in the back of the room as they perform the music. It is scientifically engineered to be the most "get up and move your ass" music it could have possibly been for back in the day. This album really only has 3 songs; tutti fruiti, the slower song, and the other song. little richards voice is genuinely interesting to listen to, and sometimes he screams so loud it actually peaks the audio. this imperfect production actually adds to music to make it feel more human. Its not great music, and its certaintly not bad, but it isnt something i would come back to again
I like it but can this thing stop giving me old people music
not my favorite, but ahead of its time.
Going into the wayback machine here. One of my struggles in my amateur music criticism is how to treat pre-Beatles/Dylan/Beach Boys rock music as i respect it more than like it (with the exception proving the rule being Jerry Lee Lewis’ Live at the Star Club album). With the 50s, I do better with jazz, country (Hank Williams) and pop (Frank Sinatra) than I do with rock. To some extent, I recognize that rock fans in the 50s just didn’t listen to music the way I do. The context of listening to an album such as this as an A-side/B-side exercise is more palatable than 30 minutes in a row, where just about anything from this era is skeletal and samey when compared to the revolution in sound about to come. For what it’s worth, this is the problem with early hip hop for me as well, where it really isn’t until Paul’s Boutique/3 Feet High/It Takes A Nation of Millions that I’m locked in and loaded. That’s a long-winded lead in to simply state I recognize the importance and influence, but this isn’t really for me. Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, and Rip It Up absolutely rock. And the other tunes I’d bop my head to at the local diner. But as a digestible album, this is short yet still tiring. A case where the parts are greater than the sum. Some of those parts are damn good though, which is why this gets a 3.
I think in terms of influence and significance to music history, this is definitely a 5/5. I terms of personal enjoyment... I think I agree that these songs weren't really meant to be played back to back. I enjoyed each of the songs but I found them to be a little same-y.
really can hear a straight line from this album to so many other classics. can’t believe this holds up so well, little Richard fucking rips on some of these as well. best tracks: tutti frutti, ready teddy, oh why
Little Richard was someone who I hadn't heard a lot of music, but would always see him every year in the Pee Wee Herman Christmas Special singing on the ice. OOOO WEEEE PEE WEEE. I also watched Elvis last year and he was portrayed in that movie, along with Tutti Frutti as a song if I'm remembering correct so it was cool to see that the two of them knew each other. This was a fun album but it also became pretty repetitive with the hooks and repetition. Only so many different words you can rhyme together in the same vein "tutti frutti" "ready teddy" "long tail sally" etc. They all sound the same, same beats and very similar vocal range. Again, this was him making his mark and I respect that for the late 50's, but this would not fly in today's age. Thinking again of To Pimp a Butterfly and how no two songs are similar.
This album is No. 14 on the list and the only rock and rollers that precede him are Elvis and Fats Domino. Notably, Ray Charles and James Brown follow him so Little Richard was one of the Originals. When listening to oldies like this I consciously try ignore the cliched melodies and hooks that sound so overdone today because back in '57 this was cutting edge and original material. So although a lot of this album sounds samey now, it influenced a shit-ton of black and wanna-be black artists, yes I'm looking at you Beatles and Rolling Stones.
The energy in this album is amazing. Every song has him being putting 100% into the vocals. This album really makes me want to go watch The Blues Brothers. There honestly seems to be very little variety between each track. I think there are actually only 3 real songs on the album, that just get rotated and different lyrics added. I think the sort of repetitiveness is offset by the fact that each track is so short. Nothing really outstays its welcome. Overall a really fun album.
He must have been a blast to see live. High energy. Fun listen. Very short if the demos and interview aren’t included.
It was pretty good, a couple of real classic songs on here
Diwang.
Another good fun listen but the only standout for me was Tutti Frutti.
Heerlijk album, luistert makkelijk weg. 3,5
Bangers
Felt a little repetitive, but still good enough of a listen. Probably wouldn't revisit except for the classics.
I really didn't expect to see this album here despite it being a classic. Extremely influential and definitely a product of its time. You just had to be there, though. Fave track(s): Can't Believe You Wanna Leave
i mean it was good but a lot of the songs from that era sound very similar and you can only listen for so long.
Not my usual kind of music, but you simply can't deny the pipes on Little Richard, his vocals were simply amazing throughout. While I appreciated the energy, by halfway through everything kinda started to feel same-y and I found myself getting a little bored. Top tracks: Tutti Frutti, Miss Ann, and Oh Why?
What else is to be said?
Little Richard! An album! Little Richard! An album! Whoop whoop whoop! ^ basically every song
Here’s Little Richard
Lil' Richard skeet skeet
This was alright. I can understand why people like it. Rock and roll is not my genre, so it didn’t really elicit a strong reaction.
Catchy, full of energy, good vocals and good instrumentals. Very good album. 8/10
Classic for a reason. Interesting variations on 12 bar blues, but by the end of the album some songs were indistinguishable. Favorite: Oh Why?
Notes - Debut album from rock n roll artist little Richard - Seen as an important record for the development of rock n roll as a genre - One part of this was richard’s use of “even 8ths” on the piano rather than swung 8ths - And his loud, brash vocal delivery - All the songs here are like 2, 2.5 minutes long and kind of blend together except for a couple standouts - Chorus Verse chorus verse chorus - This album has a ton of distortion caused by the louder elements of the recording but it adds and fills in the sound - I bet the artwork was very exciting against the other releases of the time Fav - Can’t believe you wanna leave - Great vocal performance! Least fav - Slippin and slidin - Kinda by-the-numbers rock n roll song 3.5/5
7,5/10
It was fine. Not good, not bad, just fine.
Small Richard
Pretty amazing for a record that is 65 years old, however, I still lean more towards impressive for the time versus a record I want to put on my record player on a Sunday afternoon. 3.5/5
Nice oldie rock and roll. Tutti Frutti is a jam. 3.5/5
Pionero del primer rock n'roll. Mucho ritmo y voz entusiasta
There's not much to the songs. But the delivery is absolutely killer
[concede influence in formation of rock and roll] [mention elvis] [observe that it seems like there may have been three songs repeated a number of times with different lyrics] [admit to increasing score because of nostalgia] [lament lack of the ability to capture more dynamic range in older recording technology] [apologize for not giving a higher score]
10/02 Refreshing for how soulful it sounded. Couple groovy songs. Loved the pace and energy. Fish’s bday:))
Influential album, great for it's time. High energy bops. Got a bit stale and repetitive. Knew - Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally Standouts - Ready Teddy, True Fine Mama
Of the many things I love about Little Richard, these songs aren't any of them. I think this is certainly where I must have first encountered this interesting and electrifying persona, but probably not the one I remember most. If you aren't watching him do his thing in a video, the music just cannot fully convey his entirety.
Wow, Little Richard is WILD! Tons of energy coming from this. Jenny Jenny is perfect example. I'm guessing this broke down some barriers at the time. Tutti Frutti ... what is that euphemism again?
I thought I would like having more songs in the vein of "Tutti Frutti," but a lot of "Here's Little Richard" blended together and didn't particularly stand out.
The sound is high-energy, it's classic, and the importance of Little Richard on the trajectory of both rock and roll and desegregation of musical audiences cannot be overstated. That being said, there are really only two songs (Tutti Frutti and Long Tall Sally sound almost identical while Can't Believe You Want to Leave and Miss Ann are slower but very similar to eachother).
Little Richard shines most on his high tempo, high energy numbers. These numbers (Tutti Frutti, Readdy Teddy) remind me a bit of Jerry Lee Lewis’s Live At The Star Club, Hamburg. The slower songs are fine too, but they don’t get my juices flowing.
He was quite an entertainer and for 1950s Rock n Roll, he was an important part of the progression of rock. How is this album to listen to today, in the 2020s? Tutti Frutti is still an all time classic. Others: I Can't Believe You Want to Leave, Ready Teddy, Long Tall Sally, Oh Why? Rip It Up, Jenny Jenny. 3/5
too young for Little Richard, but it's a good album to listen to on a Friday!
Unmatched energy
Nice music for a oldies party, but so outdated to listen to casually. Quality is good though
There were two songs on this album: Tutti Frutti and ones that sounded like he was trying to recreate the success of Tutti Frutti. Didn't hate it. 3.
oldie but Goldie
Overrated but undeniable in it's influence, Oh Why? is a great track I'd not heard before
