good 2000's rock

4 Yeahs for the 3 Yeahs!

The rating is entirely for Karen O. From the first notes, I was struck by how she was an outsized presence with incredible range and a singular approach to singing and melody. The songwriting and other band elements were OK-to-middling and nowhere near as interesting — the band is simply outmatched. So, remove Karen O and there really wouldn't be much to talk about — Yeah Yeah Yeahs (I do like the name) would be one of countless noisy garage punk bands. So the album is a 2-3, but she earns a 4.

Remember this one pretty well, know all these songs! Still holds up. A little abrasive but that was the point. My favorites were always Maps and Y Control. Those two definitely top this into 4/5. Modern Romance is nice, I don’t remember this one. Poor Song too. Obviously like their slow jams more.

Love the guitar sounds

Definitely will be coming back to listen to this again. Karen O has an incredible energy and there is some great production on this album.

Really good modern indie/garage rock album. Loved it all.

Day 106 Yeah Yeah Yeahs has put out a few great albums. This is the one I am the most familiar with, I used to listen to it a lot while biking to work, it was a period in my life during which I was really angry, and haven't listened to it since. I was surprised by how good it still sounds.

Was exciting

Love this album, date with the night, y control, maps, great songs

Album #: 214 first impressions: Not quite sure what to expect. I remember this album sounding chaotic and overstimulating when I last tried to listen in my early 20's. I totally wrote it off except for Maps when I was younger. And yet. I distinctly remember seeing the Maps music video on MTV when I was a tween and being completely blown away by Karen O. I didn't know women (especially women who didn't fit the extremely rigid beauty standards of the time) could be so magnetic and rock so hard. And then. Date With the Night also grew on me (I think it was on the Girls soundtrack? or maybe a movie I liked? idk) and Y Control (which I heard on a mixtape from a Tumblr blogger I liked...) And now the whole thing just feels electric and powerful. after listening through: I can see why this album was so influential. I would love to hear this on vinyl and to maybe watch performances of them during this era. Though I think seeing them live would be underwhelming now and would have been too chaotic at the time this album came out. post-reading reviews/wiki: yeah ok, I can also see how this one would read as overhyped. And I do kind of agree that the band might be better with a bassist (although would Karen O shine as brightly as she does w another band member?). Some of the songs are pretty silly/forgettable/too messy (Rich, Tick, Yeah! New York.) recommended for: fans of Arctic Monkeys, the 1975, the Ramones, anyone who owned the American Apparel Disco pants

very fun punk album!

Garage rock through a dial-up modem.

Pretty damn good for a debut album. Probably because I'm a little off mentally, but why did I keep thinking of a female Zach de la Rocha? Loud, energetic and to the point. A feel of punk and rage rock for the majority of songs. I bet these guys would be awesome to see live. I started to write down all the songs I enjoyed and I think I liked them all. I guess if I had to point out favorites, I'd go with Date With The Night, Black Tongue, Man, Poor Boy and Maps. But really didn't think there was a bad song off this album. At the next Sienko gathering, I could see us letting this entire album play out. I'll check out more of their stuff and happy I have been introduced to these guys. One complaint, I believe every song, except a couple, had a repetitive verse. Some reason it stood out to me. You know, rich, rich rich or tick, tick, tick, or bam, bam, bam or choke, choke, choke or say say say or fog, fog, fog.....well you get the idea. Is that some sort of nod to their name of Yeah, yeah, yeah's? Anyway, great debut album. Loved the energy and sound. One last note, I had a dream Mindy was singing the song Man. It was a helluva a turn on. Luke's mom is one hot momma! 4

I would let this chick ruin my life. 4

4 I absolutely love the song Maps, so I went in with high hopes here - and I wasn’t disappointed! Nothing else on the album quite reaches the high of Maps, but as a whole it’s just a really enjoyable blast of solid 2000s alternative rock. It knows better than to overstay its welcome, it keeps a fun energy up, and it has a bit of a raw sound to it that left me with a desire to see the band live. Also, I know this is a controversial opinion, but I absolutely love Karen O’s voice and style of singing. I think it adds so much to the music, and in some ways, reminds me of a more modern Chrissie Hynde, another vocalist I have much appreciation for. While I don’t have a ton of specific individual moments to expand on, I feel like I have to touch on the lyric “Boy you just a stupid bitch and girl you just a no good dick” on Black Tongue. Like, come on, this is peak songwriting. If you don’t like that lyric, then you don’t have a respect or appreciation for the English language ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ However, the highlight of the album for me by far was the final three song stretch of Maps / Y Control / Modern Romance, ending on a note so catchy that it left me wanting more (I’m not counting Poor Song since I think it was originally a hidden track). I feel like it’s a pretty uncommon musical achievement for an album to close out this strongly, which to me is a mark of talented songwriting from the group and reminds me of one of my favorite albums, Third Eye Blind’s self-titled debut (holy shit that final stretch of The Background to God of Wine is insane). Was originally going to score a 3.5 because I think the middle runs together a bit, but I ended up going back and giving this album a third listen, not because I thought I was missing something, but simply because I wanted to. So, I think that warrants a 4 from me - an album I definitely needed after the past few we’ve had.

Very fun debut album.

I loved 'It's Blitz!' and I love the songs 'Rich' and 'Maps'. Looking forward to the whole album. I did not like 'Date with the Night' (I hated that part where she screams 'Chop' about ten times) and 'Man' as much. Nevertheless, 'It's Blitz!' grew on me; I presume this album will too. Halfway through (at 'Black Tongue'), I realised that it has been fairly similar throughout so far, with the exception of 'Rich'. It's a fairly good album with some highlights, but not one I would be inclined to listen to again. Is 'Pin' just one long bizarre innuendo? If the lyrics weren't so... 'unique', I might have liked this one. Favourites: 'Rich', 'Maps', 'Modern Romance' 7/10.

I really rate this band.

Rollicking action packed punky debut, grabs your attention and then heads out before over staying its welcome. Who was that, you'll say? That was Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

An adrenaline shot of punk energy. This was an enjoyable and fun album, though it felt a little bit same-y by the end. I think I prefered It's Blitz! Over this, although this was a banger, and it surprised me a bit about how gritty and aggro Yeah Yeah Yeahs' early stuff was. Favourite: Date with the Night

Great vocals and amazing energy, but nothing more. However, isn't that what punk's about? (art punk & dance-punk, according to Wikipedia)

I would have loved it in 2013

angry female

bem tri o fadinho, uma mina que canta o rock meio punk moderno

Every song on this album feels a lot different than Maps and I don't know if that was on purpose or by some coincidence that it became the most popular song. Either way, I enjoyed the whole thing a lot more than I thought I would after hearing the first song and noticing how different it was.

I thought this was fun

A record so grand, so spectacular, so sexual, that its cum runs down my eyelids and into my mouth. A raucous racket that beats the shit out of your eardrums and shovels that same shit right up your nostrils and into your brain. A dizzy fuckstorm of perverse sexual energy and juvenile fingering by a man twice your age.

Big drums and raging hormones.

An album that slipped me by in 2003. I remember hearing a song in school and not liking it so that was that. Fast forward 20 years and I realise I made a mistake. This album was boss. I thought it was going to stick with the same tone and just when I thought it was too much of the same it switched it up. 'Pin' 'Man' 'Maps' - top tier

I really liked this one, never listened to the YYYs before so didn't know what to expect. Good energy throughout with an unexpectedly moody tone shift for the finish. All around solid, will definitely listen again

Y Control is still a fave

Once again, thank you 1001 Albums project for introducing me to yet another band of whom I'd never heard in name or any of their work. This is great stuff! So catchy and edgy without overdoing it. Musically, they manage to be sparse -- most songs seem to feature Karen O's vocals, Nick Zimmer's guitar, and Brian Chase's drum (plus a drum machine on some tracks) and nothing more -- and yet fill up the space sonically quite fully. I think it's the tempo and the way they perform. Whatever it is, it works. Very cool album. I'll have to check out more of their recordings.

When this first came out I was excited to hear it. It was a sonically, fast attack of female-fronted indie-rock that was refreshing and much needed coming out of the grunge era. This led to similar sounding bands around this time, but this debut by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs remains a high point and personally speaking, the best from the band. Haven't cared much for their other releases, as their sound wears thin and tired after a while.

The White Stripes did it before them, but the Yeah Yeah Yeahs did it better. No need to listen the Arctic Monkeys anymore once you heard them. One of the first records so far that's too short. Favorite song: Pin

I’m not sure how I’ve never crossed paths with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but this album is pretty good! It definitely hits that alt rock vibe while still feeling fresh.

First time I'd heard of these folks was from their ep that a friend of mine had. And it hit one of my sweet spots - that of some ugly, loud music that was somehow all held together by some ragtag melody and non-obnoxious enthusiasm. I played the shit out of that ep. Then this comes along and it's exactly what I wanted out of their full-length album - same vibe, polished only to the point that it made the edges clearer, with all the melody and the energy intact. And look at that beautiful, ugly album cover. Love this one.

This held up well! Give me "Y Control," "Maps," and "Modern Romance" all day long. If this had turned out to be the future of rock music we could've done a lot worse. One thing I always think of with this band is the drummer who holds his sticks like Max Weinberg. You know what I'm talking about. What's that style of playing called? I'm a go with "under thumb." As in, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer plays in an under thumb style. That sounds right.

Nice wit it

Monday morning hype. Instantly transported back to bar 36, flailing limbs and teenage angst. Raw riffs aplenty. Have flirted with buying this for about a year so a great acid test. By the end I am just as unsure. The highs are very very good. Let down badly by a few very average and uninspiring album tracks. Personal highlight is black tongue. 4/5.

Enjoyed this. Only really knew their stuff after this record (bar Maps), but this explains a lot. Much noisier than I was expecting but in a good way. There was even one riff which was very very similar to a Big Black song - if Steve Albini didn’t produce this I imagine he’s one of their key influences. Man / No No No were my favourites

Kinda surprised how well regarded yeah yeah yeah are, headlining festivals and making these lists, not like CSS or the klaxons are going to show up are they? ...though to be fair YYY are better than both of those. First time listening to the album and there were a few non-singles that were of equivalent level to the big songs, and a few that weren't. Overall really good.

For a record with punky sensibilities, this has an unusually big sound, running the risk of bombast. Fortunately, it gets by on sincerity and the strength of its performances. And the sound is well worth the risk. Standout Tracks: Rich, Date with the Night, Maps, Y Control

I was behind the times when this came out, didn't find it until 2005. Loved it. One of the few "new" albums of that time that I just loved to play over and over.

Finally a good one

Ahhhh it has this song on it! Karen O seems like such a versatile artist.. the whole Where the Wild Things are album.. HEADS WILL ROLL? and also maps?? Who is the real Karen O🤔 I liked the album! It was a bit grungey for my taste but I loved modern romance and poor song. Overall yeah, yeah, yeah I’m a fan! Hahahah. No but really i actually really liked the album and will listen again.

Karen O and strumming one chord on a guitar over again and it hitting my feels more than any other music 🤝 modern romance is The kanye “runaway” of grunge pop rock lol Poor song is so sweet as well

A great example of the garage punk revival, quick fast song with attitude, a little helping of distortion as well to push me into full blown nostalgia mode . Never heard this one at the time but I like it now as I'm sure I would have then. Favourite track Date with the Night

Sounds a lot bigger than the three people that made it. Karen O's personality translates well, and Nick Zinner's guitar creates a lot of atmosphere when needed. Crazed, fun. Favorite tracks: "Y Control", "Tick", "Date With The Night", "Maps"

At the time, fairly ground-breaking stuff, even if you can hear all the influences (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Surprisingly good, never heard of them before but itwas a good effort

Maps was not as great as I was expecting, but there are some true gems on this record. Overall I would say I enjoyed this in general.

Suprisingly good. I liked the White Stripes-like music and the nicer poppier stuff was nice too. Only thing holding it back is the weird moaning in a lot of songs. Hard to take that seriously.

Had a great time listening to this, I haven’t listened to this whole record probably since high school. I like show your bones more, the production and writing is a little more exciting but this is a cool trashy garage rock album. I like the guitar noise in no no no, sounds like a hawk or something. Objectively idk how good this is but it’s nostalgic to me. 3.5? 4?

I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and there are some great songs on here like Y Control but I lose enthusiasm throughout the listen. Hopefully this isn’t the only YYYs album.

Wait, they don't love you like I love you. This wasn't my first YYY's record; I was lucky enough to be living in Brooklyn to get in on the first ep early. It was a real treat to see some of the shows and watch this band ascend. To watch them move beyond the Post-Punk Brooklyn thing was no surprise and, for me, it was this record that truly set them on this course.

7.5/10 mejor de lo q esperaba y ningun skip. es medio monotono sosi pero igual mgto caleta

listened to this for the first time in full since covid (mid 2020), re-listening to this was a joy! consistently good album, great instrumentals, and of course Karen O was a joy as always :)

En solid trøkk. Fett med hun på vokal. Riffene er jo eksepsjonelt hentet

Rocking goodness, and better with each listen.

The voice of the vocalist is sexy, heavily modified guitar rifts and bass, aggresive drumming. Garage rock, dance punk, this achieves to maintain a rebellious feeling throughout the album

Way better than I ex0ected from this act, k8nda ca7ght ne by surprise, and if a few tracks were better it'd be a 5.

Red blue blue red green blue red red red red

Nice and spiky

I’m surprised to find another Yeah Yeah Yeahs album so soon, as it was only around a week ago that I heard another album of their’s (It’s Blitz) that I really enjoyed. Unsurprisingly, I’m excited to hear this one too! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Rich, Maps I enjoyed this album a lot! The Yeah Yeah Yeahs remind me a lot of Plumtree, but more modern sounding. The singer occasionally has somewhat bluesy sounds similar to Taylor Momsen, and yet at other times sounds very different. I’ll be keeping this review short today with it being the Christmas season and having lots to do, but this is certainly an easy album to recommend to any pop-rock or alt-rock fans out there.

Well it was fun A great record.

really raw and fun like 70s punk made new again

Great album, I should listen to more YYYs

Wonderful album throughout.

Great album. Bought this in Tower Records on Times Square back in 2003, those were the days!

An average indie album, would give 3 stars, however Maps is a banger and I think drags it to a 4

Really enjoyed this one. Love the stripped back sound

Banger of an album, great to hear it again.

Added to list

Love it

Absolutely obsessed with the raw lo-fi garage sound, consisting of nothing more than a chaotic screaming vocalist, a heavy distorted wailing guitar, drums not afraid to spam its ear-piercing cymbals, and an artsy use of cyber synths that'll feel more complete in their later albums. It really rushes by, with the first 7 songs taking up only 17 minutes. Ideas come and go, but they never feel incomplete; it reminds me of early punk records with their short and fast songs. The last 4 (5?) songs however slow down and shift the mood from wild to introspective (reminding of art punk like Wire's Chairs Missing or even midwest emo). This was a smart pacing decision, as I don't think I could have taken full smack energy the entire time, and I enjoyed seeing both sides, feeling equally consistent. "No No No" was the perfect bridge between these two styles. There's something to like about every song, and many are memorable enough to leave a lasting impression after just one listen. It's no wonder why "Maps" became a defining song of the generation. Favorites: Rich, Pin, Maps, Y Control

Great album, probably not my favourite from this band but still good :-)

It's interesting that this came after the last album which was a White Stripes album. I can imagine this group opening for them. Their styles are not totally dissimilar. My biggest problem is with the vocals; they sound like she's singing through a megaphone the whole time. I do like the song "No no no". I see what you did there, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Solid stuff. Very energetic, gets the blood pumping. Really enjoyed it.

The first time I heard Maps I dug this band. I love Karen O's unique shrieky vocals and the big fuzzy sound that comes from the guitars and percussion of her bandmates. Again, garage rock - some people don't like it but I'm always impressed at how much bigger the sound is given it's usually only a couple instruments. These guys and this album just ooze energy. They're like 80's post-punk and new wave reinvented (and better). Now, this isn't a perfect album. The lyrics are sometimes a little too juvenile or simple (barely even there on Pin, what'd you say on Cold Light?) and Karen O can get a little annoying (the last few ticks on Tick, uh-huhs on Black Tongue). But even those songs, like most on this album, are pumping. Rich, Date With the Night, Y Control kick ass. No, No, No was a bit underwhelming (especially the last 2 minutes; unnecessary), as were Modern Romance and Poor Song; so a bit of a dip to end the album. But overall, a solid album and one that will have me (re)seeking out more Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Weird, but cool. I dig it. Favorite tracks: Man, Maps, Y Control. Liked the music to Cold Light, but the lyrics are a little ugh.

My favorite of theirs.

Geggjuð plata, gott kaos!

Hell yeah

Really good fun - even the distance of time away from its trendiness - it holds up really well. Maybe a little weak lyrically but it’s a solid noughties garage album end to end, with a some good memorable tunes to boot.

Garage-rock-punk cantado por una chica. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

It’s Blitz is better. This is still good.

So great, they need to play Shaky soon

Never listened to this record, though it's been ever present, people love it. Pretty impressive debut record for sure, very fully formed. A lot of fun to listen to.

It kind of annoyed me, but in a good way?

Chaotic and primal at time, beautifully cathartic at others. One of my favorite examples of this period of rock music in the 00's

Thought this was a great album with my two favorites, "Y Control" and "Maps". Doesn't sound from 2003, if anything they were ahead of their time. Great energy from start to finish. 8/10.

This is a solid punkish/garage rock album most notable for Karen O's distinctive vocals, but three tracks stand head and shoulders above the others: "Date with the Night," "Black Tongue," and "Maps." The latter is likely their most well-known track, as it charted in the US. That said, it sticks out like a sore thumb on the album—stylistically, it's more polished and ... I don't want to say "tame," so let's go with "accessible" instead (hence it hitting the charts). It's a fantastic song, but the rest of the album's wilder in comparison, which is likely to disappoint more pop-oriented music fans. "Black Tongue" is more representative of the album as a whole, and a joy for those who love the rawer sound. Karen O's in fine vocal form, and the instrumentation is simple and a touch dirty. While I can't pick out a song I don't like, but I wish there was another song or two that I outright loved. It wouldn't have hurt for them to have thrown "Bang" (from their debut EP) onto the album, just to give it a little more kick. But that's quibbling. This is a great album.

A good mix of punk & rock. I love Karen O's voice, and Maps is one of the best love songs ever recorded.

Very good. Never really listened to this band. But enjoyed it.

Garage-rock-punk cantado por una chica. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Punky pop-rock goodness.

Lovely indie sleaze

Like Sleater-Kinney but probably better.

Phenomenal grunge album! Really enjoyed this listen. Many high points with sparse lows - already recommended it to a friend. Reminds me a lot of my favorite sound from early 00s Sia :)

Ett par kanonlåtar, och ett par sämre

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a group that I definitely expect to like a lot more than I usually do. They have some absolutely brilliant songs, but when you dig into an album there's a lot of filler. I get the sense that they're absolutely fantastic to see live, and overall it's a fun listen but definitely inconsistent.

Prefs: Rich, Man, Pin, Cold Light, No No No, Maps, Y Control, Modern Romance, Poor Song Moins pref: Tick

Dope. 7/10

Good album. I've heard it before, but I still like it a lot. 4/5

Really enjoy the raw, sassy vocals on this one. The really noisy tracks like "Man" are a lot of fun.

Post punk, rock, grunge. Potente.

not sure how maps coheres with the rest of the album, but i'm glad it was published! y control could have been the final track, but that leaves ten fun tracks in a row!

The thing I like about jazz is that it changes every time you listen to it. No two performances are alike. Each one is a moment in time never to be duplicated but is it possible that jazz doesn't exist outside of live performances? Obviously this isn't jazz but I think FTT best exists as an experience. It's a stream of consciousness and difficult to anticipate what's going to happen next. No track illustrates this better than Tick Tick where KO's breath ends in a frenzied display of self-dysregulation. I'd like to be swept up in the mayhem of the moment if I was watching this live, but this is a hard transition thru Spotify.

Lots of grunge, fun and a good few added to playlist

Enjoyed the jangly guitars and the vocals. A few songs were very good and most had nice high energy. Not memorable enough to listen again 3.6/5

fun band, they're cool

Delightfully noisy.

Enjoyed

Bastante original y único, tiene una voz hermosa y los gemidos que echa entre las canciones son 10/10.

Great unique voice. Great unique sound. Have you ever heard an album that you don't think you're cool enough to be allowed to listen to? This is that for me.

Not that bad as i thought the rise of indie was

They don’t love you like I love you

A little dated, but otherwise solid

Good. Don't like the mix however

En general muy bien. Pero "No no no", "Y control" y "Maps" se salen. Gran disco. Es un 4 estrellas tirando para 5.

Yes this album is wonderful, it’s been a while since I listen to the whole thing but it’s just as good as I remember.

04/18/22

I didn't like this album as much as It's Blitz, which I first encountered with this list. Compared to that, this album didn't really have any songs that stuck out. However, I love the sound of this band, and I still thought that this was worth a listen. Poppy and gritty at the same time 4/5

Z niewiadomych mi do końca powodów przemówił do mnie ten krążek. To nie jest nic nadzwyczajnego, ale słuchało się ponadprzeciętnie fajnie. Ma taki przyjemny garażowy vibe. Głos wokalistki też mi podszedł, nietypowy. Daję słabe 4.

Enjoyed it

I love that the songs feel almost put of control. Karen O's vocals really contribute to that feeling. I can understand why this would be great live.

Listened to this quite a bit back in the day, along with most of the other big NYC bands of the era. Karen O's vocals are definitely the best part. She keeps it fun, even exhilarating, throughout - even on the slower songs towards the end of the album. She's like a hyperactive Chrissie Hynde. This remains their best album. There are alot of great tracks here but "Pin" was always my favorite and still is.

I know of Yeah Yeah Yeahs from Maps and "Heads Will Roll", but also heard "Y Control" although I didn't know the title. In general I'm a fan, a few songs on this album I'm not really into, but the ones I am into I am very into. Rich and Y Control are my two stand-outs, but Maps is still good although almost like a different album since it's so mellow. I also enjoyed listening to the 4 track demos on the Deluxe edition, they are all so much distorted but overall I think they made the right choices for the actual album's sound.

Solid 4, almost a 5

Trippy and energetic.

Reminds me of a band playing at high school in a acoobie doo movie. I love it, fresh Colley rock. I like her voice and the whole vibe. Not every song works but overall a lot of fun to listen to.

The first two thirds of the album are good but the last third of this is fantastic.

First, let's start with the cover. It's horrible. Doesn't suit the album. Great album - debut three piece noise rock - of it's time certainly, but has enough hits to lift itself. And Maps - wonderful, especially the video.

I've loved this band since Rock Band. Who hasn't? Maps gets 4 stars by itself. What a refresh after fuckin Ute Lemper.

Classic punk band i'd say. COuld have had more power in some songs, if you understand what I mean. But over all I had a good time listening to this album:D

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs always give me the feels and I enjoyed revisiting this album, reminds me of high school years

4.0 + The Yeah Yeah Yeahs blazed in on a wave of media buzz back in the early aughts so it’s strange to think that they now seem relegated to a mere footnote within that Brooklyn-DIY-indie scene. On hindsight, Karen O's stage persona always smacked of performance art, overly ironic with little heartfelt emotion to draw in the listener (note two exceptions: “Maps” and “Modern Romance”). That said, I do adore Nick Zinner’s guitar sound, a rainbow colored chainsaw.

cool prefer show your bones

Cool modern-punk album. Maps was a pleasant surprise, but most of the rest of the album was much heavier which was wonderful.

I think this is the first time listening to this album in full. I was already a fan of the yeah yeah yeahs, having the album it’s a Blitz and familiar with the song maps. Really enjoyed this album it’s a lot rawer than it’s a blitz and full of energy. One I will add to my rotation. Also learned today my wife seen the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs at a festival in 2006, didn’t think she was into them, she wasn’t…

Pretty good, especially Maps

Pleasantly surprised with this album. Enjoyed a big chunk of it. Fav tracks: Rich, Maps, Modern Romance

Great album. Early 2000s punk meets rock style. For the most part, solid all the way through

I knew Rich and Maps going into today but hadn't listened to the whole album before. This isn't really my kind of music and I don't know that I'll want to do the whole thing again but I listened to it a few times today and enjoyed it well enough. The opening of Rich is an excellent start to a record and I love Karen O's snarling, screaming vocals throughout. The lyrics in many of the songs include long stretches of a single word or phrase repeated over and over (rich-rich-rich-rich-rich-rich; choke, choke, choke; tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick; uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh-ooh; bam-bam-bam-bam-bam-bam-bam-bam dunuh-dunuh-dunuh-dunuh). This totally worked for me. The almost gentle Modern Romance is a nice change of pace after so much screaming and blistering guitar. Love the sweet vocal quality, the simple steady beat, and the quiet jingle bells on this song. The last track Poor Song starts with an off-key mmm-chh that I could listen to all day and a line that is my personal philosophy, "Baby, I'm afraid of a lot of things, but I ain't scared of loving you."

What a feel this album has. Sexy, sultry a slow burn. Karen Os voice is a thing of beauty and never ceases to captivate. Best songs; Modern Romance, Y Control, Rich and of course the sumptuous Maps. 4 🌟

Glorious bit of early noughties New York indie rock. Karen O absolutely kills it, and the guitar sounds are very much synonymous of the time.

Pfff muchas buenas rolas en un mismo disco. Muy bueno la verdá

I guess I was in a different head space when this came out and didn’t seek it out. My loss. This slaps. Love it.

good album, step off being great 3.7

Not bad! Karen O definitely mixed things up in the middle there, with her mixture of singing, moaning and squealing. Won't buy, but might listen some time again

This is a selection which absolutely deserves a place on this list, and I would have put it in my personal canon years and years ago. Still holds up. I hadn't picked up on the basslessness explicitly before, but it helps bring out Karen's vocals, squeezed through something before reaching the ear. For the most part, the songs are energy-fests, burning up as they fade out. The pop inclinations are there, but don't surface completely on this album. That might be for the best: It's a more consistent project even if it has duller aural peaks than some of their other albums. The second half dips in intensity, proving that breadth is eminently possible for the band.

The more I listened, the more I liked it. I’ve known about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for a while, but I’ve always kinda kept to the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand for my early 00s rock- and man I’ve been missing out. Not every song on here has the same pacing, but they all have that same manic energy, and it wasn’t till I got to the flip side of the album that I really got into it. Never before has my thought on an album and a band flipped so quickly . I’d say No No No was the track that really got me on board, though Maps and Y Control-how it flows into each other- most excellent. Modern Romance is also amazing. Good job Yeah Yeah Yeahs

They have the early 2000s alt sound lined up and nailed. Date With The Night is abound with lipstick and neon. Maps is a great tune. Cool album, will need another spin

It’s got some swagger but it loses a lot of steam in the back half. I think it’s a better project as individual songs, but listening as a sum gets a bit to samey. I did quite like it, overall, though. Between a 3 and a 4 here.

Consistent and sturdy aggro-fem pop. Rad as hell. The only thing holding this back is that it is too consistent, as it holds a little sameness throughout.

Really good

Hot stuff

Lekker rammelen en toch ook mooie nummers maken

Und alle so: yeah. Erinnert nicht nur wegen dem overdrive auf dem Mikro (haben das seinerzeit eigentlich ALLE New Yorker Bands so gemacht?) etwas an The Strokes.

Really loved the lead singer's range and piercing voice. There were some sick riffs on here too... favs were rich, date with the night, and y control. 4/5

I forgot just how good this album is! It has aged really well too. Love that it is simplistic or minimalistic but sounds more complex.

I enjoyed this. Reminded me of Scott pilgrim vs the world and the sex babombs. It was rowdy and fun.

This one is solid

Nice álbum, a referent of the '00

Opening track is such a banger of an introduction. Karen’s vocal effects throws me back to early 2000s teen movies. I found the songs remained interesting all the way through, with a cool ability to shock us with unexpected sections or directions without being messy or chaotic.

Album Song Ranking: No No No (H.M.) Modern Romance (H.M.) Maps Y Control Man Poor Song Cold Light Pin Tick Rich Date With The Night Black Tongue Additional Comments: I personally liked this album. It had lots of flare and different tones. I like how it was very high in energy towards the beginning, bridged towards the middle, and ended on a more calm note towards the end.

Many great songs. Highly energetic.

With this album the Yeah Yeah Yeahs emerged as major influencers of the new alt rock movement of the mid-2000's. It is easy to see their impact and growth while keeping a unique sound.

I liked it. Generally this isn't really my style of music, but on this album the intensity and atmosphere just hit the right notes for me.

Bastante guapo, guitarreo y vocales finas

Brilliant pop/rock start to the bank holiday weekend 👌🙌. Definitely gonna revisit.

Do love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but their earlier stuff is a bit too frantic for me. Date with the Night and Maps absolute classics of course

Some good shit.

Cool album. Super weird to listen to the first half and know that Maps is coming up. strong 8/10

Pretty groovy but I definitely had to let it grow on me. Maps was good, and I liked Y Control. Couldn't just sit and listen to this but for doing dishes it was good background. 7

Maps is classic rock band and the rest was somewhat entertaining but not great. 7

Sooo sooo impressive. "Man" gives the title to the album. The Amazon Music album has 29 songs. Maps (My Angus Please Stay?) is a masterpiece that carries the album.

Sehr schön garagih

One of the best finds through this has been Yeah Yeah Yeahs albums. Giving an extra star because their albums have both been consistently good stuff

Good stuff. Maps and Y Control have long been favorites of mine.

Really good punk album, although im not super used to listening to punk.

Nice Rock

Not bad a little noisy

Very rock punk vibe at the start and leads into a very slow beautiful sound. The slower songs are still a great listen even after almost 20 years.

Songs: Maps, Date with the Night, Cold Light

This is a more modern album than I’ve listen to previously. I can respect the punk sound n most of this album is a good listen. Overall not something I would play although I probably have a few of there radio hit songs in my library

It’s the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Fucking rocks.

Heard them in rock band back in the day had no idea they were so gritty!

Some really good tracks

mostly mellow rock from the earlier 2000's.. That one song "Maps" I am pretty sure I have heard before.. if I had to guess.. rockband or guitar hero haha

Every track sounds like it could have been in a Sony Bravio advert. Not familiar with the band, they remind me a bit of The Pretty Reckless.

Ich mag die Energie und dass es eine Sängerin ist.

I liked this one a lot more than I expected to at first. It's sort of grunge/garage rock style and the lead vocalist is a woman. The album itself is somewhat short (36 ish minutes) and not at all a bad listen.

I always kinda liked Maps from the radio. First heard the whole album when I had a roommate with it and it grew on me. Still takes me back to those days.

I enjoyed this as well. I really like the bluesy aspect of their music.

Get you a girl like Karen O, who can do "Tick" and "Maps" on the same album.

The 90s are alive in 2003. Maps is a classic

What a fucking debut. sick riffs with karen's beautiful voice. made me interested to dive into their discography.

Banging. Takes me straight back to that early noughties NY scene.

soms HELE goede liedjes (tick.. maps..) en soms HELE slechte liedjes.

A fine debut. Late 90s/ early 2000s rock just kinda sucks, but I guess this is better than most of it

This album is good. I really liked a few songs. I appreciate how this band’s Frost sound is so unique and you can always recognize them.

good good good

Generally fine enough, slightly grating stylistically for me, 3

OK, I like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but I do not think that anyone needs to hear more than one of their albums before they die. And I didn't really get into them (or see them live) until the It's Blitz! era, so I assume that would be the one for me personally. That being said... Listening today I think I might like this one more than that one? It's rawer, less synth nonsense. I think they are both 3s for me personally but this one is a higher 3. My favorite song of all time by them remains "Zero," but I think if I'm picking one album by them, this is it. (Strokes pun only somewhat intended.)

Karen O + NYC scenster musicians + Maps = $$$ Nah jk. A couple of cool tunes and generally a decent use of a dynamic frontwoman and a limited sonic pallet. The drummer tends to be off doing his own thing to me most of the time but they a’ight.

¡Súper rolas! Muy vanguardistas

Not for me - post-post-punk punk. Just a bit annoying.

I like the music far more than the vocals, although honestly I suspect the whole thing is an absolute blast to see live. On record, I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it. I liked the first half of the album better than the second and ironically I didn't really like Maps which was the big hit. Its getting a straight-down-the-middle, perfectly acceptable: 3/5

It's the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Fun, though a bit odd. But still fun.

i liked this more than expected, but can't think of a time I would go out of my way to put it on

Did not like it much on my first listen, but I think a second time through it might start to grow on me. 3 stars or C-.

This is one of those albums that I'd call a definitional 5/10. Not a lot sticks out to me other than the energy of a lot of these songs, it has the most obviously manufactured hit of the 2000s with Maps, and past that I forgot everything about all of these songs as soon as they ended.

Bastante caótico, energético por momentos emocional

Good but not something I would listen to often.

If this album were theatre to me it seems to be a collage of independent loosely related self-encapsulated moments or events tied together. They lead perfectly into Maps which could be ironic. Some pillow talk tracks to ease us out. 1 banger track, live video is sensational. 1-2 others enjoyable. Great vocals showing lots of range with different backdrops.

Maps takes this super high but struggled to connect with the more aggressive tone otherwise

Not horrible …need another listen. Right time I could get more into it perhaps…so Meh

Really enjoyed the first album on here, so was looking forward to this. Couple of good songs on here but a bit of a disappointment overall

Preferred the other album to this one. There were some good songs in here and Maps is the one I have listened to before a fair few times. Overall, only ok.

Solid listen but I prefer the second half to the first. Maps is the standout.

Not heard this before and it sounded like late '70s punk (although more sophisticated) for the first few tracks. Album got more interesting and grew on me more from the longest track - "No No No" - onwards. That one has vocals reminding me of Gilli Smyth from Gong - so even earlier than the '70s! Will be listening to the second half at least again without doubt. Edit: been listening to an earlier EP which has 5 tracks with even more energy and better on first listen to than this album.

A bit too shouty for me. I’ll try and have a couple more listens. It might grow on me

Heavily reminded me of Paramore

not bad - a little punky, a little siouxsie.

Solid album, a very underrated band IMO.

Not my favorite album of theirs but a good debut with the standout Maps. Solid 3.4/5.

Not sure why there are 2 Yeah Yeah Yeahs albums on the list. While this is pretty decent, I don't think it tops the other one. Also, really, should there EVER be two albums from the same artist on the list? Y Control is the standout track for me here ⭐⭐.75

*2003. *Maps is the only song I know. *Fun album - kinda clubby and dancy. *I like the Yeahx3, but they're designed to be listened to for more than a few minutes at a time. RATING - 6.5/10

Why go to all the trouble of making art if you don’t have anything interesting to say? Maps is pretty good though.

Full of energy, raw, punk-ish rock. Enjoyable.

good stuff in here

I only knew one song the rest was ok

it's ok

No, I’m good. Look I’ll listen to it and it might be fine but I’ve heard enough to know this is not a particularly significant band to me. Conclusion: it’s fine and in places good and if I had teenagers and they were listening to this rather than corporate radio, I would be happy. Some good guitar and Karen seems cool but still not original or memorable for me.

I picked up the phone to get the name of Date with the Night, but none of the other songs were stand outs. Serviceable for passing the time while on a jaunt downtown for a grassy snack.

i like the overall vibe of this album but some of the songs felt like too much

Day 274 Highlights Black Tongue Pin Maps

Not at all sure what to think about this one. Not bad, but not really all that interesting either.

I love it when an artist carries themselves with swagger. Like hell yeah, express yourself, don't even try to convince me that you're cool, because you already know you are. BDE. Hell yeah. This album has the E but not the BD to back it up. I wish these songs had more /song/ to them. Most of them are pretty short, revolving around a very simple riff with even simpler lyrics. Even Maps, an obvious standout, is built on super sparse verses and a chorus that happens to be quite catchy. I wanted a fuller mix, though. It's a little too raw for me. That rawness does come with incredible energy throughout its entirety, but there just isn't enough meat on the bones to make it all that satisfying for me. Might have been influenced by the fact that I listened to this album while absolutely dead tired. I drove five hours with my friend Kylee to see Modest Mouse. They were pretty good.

"Maps" is an incredible song but the rest of this album is ass and a few tracks contain some of the worst signing in the history of recorded music. Guitarist has a cool sound.

Here voice seems very familiar, reminds me a bit of Polly Styrene mixed with Clair Grogan, and someone else I can't think of. But anyway, the album was ok, grew on me a bit but.... Not really for me I'm afraid. But something I can appreciate without liking much. But got to be worth a 3.

I am not sure if its as good as their debut, but it is a solid album. Nick Zinner's guitar work is some of the best from the 2000's rock revival. The problem is I just play their material very often.

Interesting. Too much sighing and shrieking for my taste.

I didn't really jive with this in the way I expected to. I think maybe it was just wrong time, wrong place, because in principle I like the Yeahs and I admire Karen O a lot. I'm going to tentatively rate it and come back to it in a bit.

I thought overall this album was just okay, with the standouts being Maps and Y Control, but the songs preceding those were very raw and noisy. The best of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is very good, but they seem to be one of those bands where they have some good songs and the rest just don’t really work for me. Maybe on another album that won’t be the case, but it certainly was for Fever To Tell.

Too nonchalant for this music, I’m like Declan frfr. Mid album tho, funny meme song.

guess I liked it.

This was a grower album for me - there are the highlights of Maps and Y Control, but I also really liked Modern Romance. Pretty solid album. 7/10

Why on earth is this on this list? It's alright but is it really one of a handful of albums worth listening to? Nope. A variation on the White Stripes from way back then. I didn't know whether to give it a 3 or 4 but the end of the album just turned into nothing spectacular whatsoever so a (possibly generous) 3.

An sich nicht meine Musik, aber das hat offensichtlich Feuer

INPUT = {"artist": "Yeah Yeah Yeahs", "album": "Fever To Tell"} LINEUP = {"men": 2, "women": 1} FEATURED_ARTISTS = {"men": 0, "women": 0} TOTAL_MEN = 2 TOTAL_WOMEN = 1 WOMEN_PERCENTAGE = 33 OUTPUT = "Score adjusted accordingly. 3/5"

Really really cool. Gonna show this to my girl she will love it!

I never really “got it” with this band. Most of their stuff I've always found pretty boring. I like "Maps" pretty good, but beyond that, I'm pretty indifferent to this band. I'm happy that other people take some joy from this, but they've always been kind of a blip on my radar. 6/10

Sympa sans plus, rock de meuf, quelques morceaux ou la voix rappelle The Do

C’est pas mauvais ça doit être sympa en concert mais j’ai envie d’écouter autre chose

some bangers on here

Good stuff here, these guys have some damn good songs, but for me they don't make the leap to great. Just really good.

Some of the guitar playing is a bit whiney but some songs were great. Wait was good.

Somehow manages to balance being rough around the edges with a polished sound. A fun album to listen to, especially considering I knew some songs even though I don't think I had ever heard of this band.

As someone only familiar with Maps before getting this assignment, imagine my surprise finding out the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are garage punk. Solid album, poorly marketed.

Gear: HEDD Audio HEDDphone Two Artwork: ️🎊🔥🖍️ Production (Deluxe Remastered): 🥩😲👌 Music: 👩‍🎤🌪️⚡ Rating: 🤒🤒🤒(🤒)/5

Started off strong as hell with classic punk tracks. Maps is a great tune. The end of album slowed right on down, winding to indie rock. Good songs all throughout but as an album, it seems to lose its way.

I'm going into this completely blind, kind of know maps from Rock Band or whatever and didn't care too much for it aside from the drums. Fever to Tell has good spark and energy. There's cool guitar tones and interesting drum patterns and a great high energy vocalist. This is great for 2/3rds of the record, and the last 1/3rd feels like that energy burnt out and things get slower and duller, almost cliff like. Can't stress that it starts strong and keeps that momentum going for a good portion of the record. Maps is coming back to me, and although it's one of their most popular songs, isn't doing much for me. I'm struggling to understand why it's so popular and renowned (Rolling Stone magazine in 2025 called it the second greatest song of the century???????). I don't think it's hot shit. It's kind of at the part of the record where that cool punk energy turns into some opium withdrawal symptoms. It messes with the overall groove of the album for me. Y Control is good, but Modern Romance and Poor Song are definitely not as good as Maps. While the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (kinda iffy on the band name too ngl but you are what you is) have some influence and legacy in the special all-too-encompassing "indie" sound and vibe of the 2020s, I think at times I enjoy it more than Is This It, the other big hip "indie" record of the time, and other times (aforementioned last parts of the album) it does not. I guess The Strokes are a little more catchier for me compared to Fever To Tell. It's importance earned a spot on this list because enough music critics like it and well, any good rock music in the 2000s was like the later parts of the gold rush. Not much to find, and any nugget was a good nugget. Fever to Tell is okay. Would be much better if you cut a few songs, but it's mostly harmless. Much worse music in the 2000s, but I find it hard to think this is one of the better albums that decade. The band sounds good, they have another album on this list that might be better. I'll find out soon enough.

Grungey fem rock

Gah. I love other stuff by yeah yeah yeahs but this didn't really do it for me.

Karen O got a hell of a voice. I don’t mind this album, it’s pretty cool. Love the guitar and the quick pace combined with Karen’s raw vocals.

Fine I guess. Nothing stuck with me other than a few moments that were solid. I can't really complain about much either. A pretty bland example of 2000s garage rock.

Wait, they don't love u like i love you x3

yeah yeah yeah another ok album

Maybe I’m crazy and/or just don’t have nostalgia, but I only really remember Maps and everything else in this album is kinda annoying to listen to. 2.5 but not SO bad to bring it down, 3/5

Fine indie rock. Some of the underlying music is very good, but in general I don’t like the vocal performances very much.

Knew "Maps"

I usually like chick rockers, but this one was just sort of boring to me. Couldn't really get into it. 3/5 Highlights: Date With The Night Pin No No No Maps Y Control

Decent rock/pop album with consistent live instrumentation. 3.2/5.0

Have a love hate relationship with yeah yeah yeahs. One minute it sounds nice, the next-unbearable. Not a fan of the screaming/moaning. Favourite track is “Maps”

Pretty good noisy album

Nearly very good but lacks the bite it needs for me. The garage/DIY production gets in the way of it being really great. Also always sad to be reminded tiktok is rotting my brain

It's interesting to hear the throughlines in here between 90s grunge and 00s folk/punk/pop. Florence and the Machine energy. It's good! Probably fun live.

It was listenable.

The first half of this sounded like a White Stripes album. The second half sounded like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. In conclusion, pretty good!

Of that wrack of American garage bands who the British press said would save guitar rock at the turn of the millennium - White Stripes, Strokes, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs - it is grossly unfair that Jack White should have become the elevated figure. The drums on Fever To Tell are better than any White Stripes record. The guitars more interesting than White's old-timey schtick. The singing more genuinely eccentric than White's contrived yelping. And the songwriting - equally blockheaded in both camps, but at least you can dance to Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It is easier to elevate Jack White to rock star, because he can execute his one idea by himself. No one member of Yeah Yeah Yeahs is exceptional by themselves, but they make a charming noise together. There are many complaints on this site about how British music is over-represented. Well, the American redemption rock is clearly over-presented: no White Stripes albums deserve to be here; It's Blitz, which we've already heard, doesn't need to be here. If that strange bleak moment in the early 00s needs to be represented - and completeness says it does - then Fever To Tell is the only thin we need. 3 I wondered whether I had left anything unsaid about Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Fever to Tell when we did It’s Blitz a while back. I reread the review there and I did forget one thing. I think the drummer is very good too. 3/5

Some confrontational punk pop driven by the provocative and sometimes charismatic Karen O yelp. The slower sweet ones are way better--Maps is a classic--but the album is otherwise a bit monotonous and messy.

Karen O is the driving force here. “Maps” is stellar and there are a few other standouts, but also some more mediocre fare.

This was fine but sometimes the vocals were a bit grating

like it! Still sound fresh, should listen it more to catch some of the songs, none of them were memorable at first listen

It's good. I liked the second half better than the first, I think. I was really surprised when it got to Maps, as I did know the song, but I didn't know it was by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. At this point I don't think I can listen to Maps and not think about a video online of a VR lemon lady singing the song in italian. If I'm being honest I didn't enjoy this nearly as much as It's Blitz!, which I really liked, but I think this is the kind of album and band that will really grow on me (because I difinetly plan to listen to more music by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in the future). It has already happened with other artists/bands before. That's why this album will be going on my re-listen list, to give it another chance eventually. 3.5/5

Brash Raw Scattered Punk rock energy crossed with early 2000s garage rock Maps is clearly a classic - but there aren't really too many other compelling moments on the album Karen O's vocals walk a fine line between riotously engaging and obnoxiously abrasive - falling on one side of that line or the other from song to song.
