Pas vraiment écouté au complet par contre…
- Never listened to a full YYYs album before - Disappointed, thought I would've liked this a lot more - Only really liked the two songs I was already familiar with - Fav songs: Maps, Y Control
Rather dull, sanitised post-punk with little in the way of soul. Singer was okay, but the rest of the band were very forgettable.
????
At their best, I truly love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But this is not their peak, this is just their beginning. (And that peak was all too brief.) Philosophical discussions aside, this album is way too rough around the edges (as well as the midsection) for me to be able to compare it with compatriots such as, say, White Stripes' Elephant. Maps is pretty much the only decent song here.
OK - nothing amazing on here. Nice and short though!
Good rock album, nothing to memorable for me. Low likelihood of relisten.
Dit deed me niks. Eerder een vleugje irritatie dan plezier. Heads Will Roll staat er niet op. Meh.
How is this possibly a must hear? An average at best contemporary punk album, almost cliche in many ways.
Just an unnecessary addition on the back of their other album. This one doesn't make more such a smooth listening experience since it's marred by noise and some yells
At first I didn’t like the sound of this album because of how intense the woman’s vocals and sounds are. I didn’t care for the vocals to be honest I think they were impressive and fit the sound well. This is a genre i know but don’t usually enjoy. I enjoyed listening to the instrumentals though.
2.5
I'd heard Maps and liked it. I really liked Heads Will Roll but I'd never gotten around to checking them out further. Well I did with this album and I wasn't missing anything. I even checked their Spotify and their top 5 songs is Maps and 4 different versions of Heads Will Roll. This album is a conundrum for me. I like the style of music. I like the music. I like her vocals. I just don't find any of the songs other than Maps entertaining. It's the same issue I've always had with Van Halen as well. All talented but don't like any of the songs.
All songs sounded the same.
I've heard of this band before, but I was unfamiliar with their music. I did not enjoy the singer's voice and the music itself blended together and just sounded like noise. No thanks.
Out of Ten Rich-4 Date with the night-3 Man-6 Tick-2 Black tongue-4 Pin-2 Cold light-3 No No No-6 Maps-8 Y-Control-7 45%
Have to say this wasn't my thing, I found it a bit much and repetitive. A bit too full on and samey. Luke said more like no no no, please. But I'm not influenced by him. Shame as I thought it would be
Meh
A bit too alternative for me. Didn’t appeal to me. I can appreciate it for what it is but it’s not my style.
Listens: 2 Enjoyed: meh Band was tight with a few good tracks but not really for, would be around 2.5
I had heard Maps before and the Karen O's singing on Hello Tomorrow, and really like both of those. So I was eagerly looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, it's not working for me. Too much noise and yelling and not much music. It's not that I dislike noise and yelling, but there needs to be some kind of form or melody or grooving energy to it. Walking away from this one disappointed, but Maps will stay on a long playlist of my favorite songs.
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: It’s ok, feels very lacklustre in content and feel, lyrics and songwriting are good but rarely seems to grab your attention which is disappointing given it’s short run time Favourite song: Track 9 - Maps
There were a few good songs. The rest of the album sounded like some teenagers who just learned to play instruments and started a band.
12 songs, 3 of them are different, but all 12 are 3 chords and 2.5 minutes of energy . Date with the night might go on my running play list. 2 of 5 stars
Not too bad. However, I'd like to slap whoever the idiot was that decided that forcing the distortion on everything would make them sound "harder" and "edgy". Overall, I'm not impressed.
Well, it had "Maps" on it, which was not representative of the sound. Very garagy.
There are some really fun, exuberant tracks of this album, songs I'm always happy to hear come up on a song list or the radio, but the rest of the album just doesn't live up to them. I'd give it a 2.5 just bc those tracks are legit fun and good but as an album it's pretty forgettable.
Mid
I just don't like their particular brand of punky rock that much. Why is their so much punky rock on my list? I'm not into it.
Bantay.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs has always been hit or miss for me. I was pretty luke warm to it today. But who knows maybe on the right day I'd absolutely love it. I dunno.
The songs themselves were pretty good, but I really wasn’t a fan of the vocal performances and they ended up putting me off a lot of the time.
A bit too aggressive and screaming for my taste. Liked the final two songs.
Not my jam
I’ve heard of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in reputation, but have only heard their most popular songs on the radio or in passing. I had no idea they were a British band, but it definitely checks out. This is the first album I’ve heard so far that is post 2000s, but it’s reminding me of the 70s and 80s punk eras, with formidable women with interesting voices at the front. I’m sure their shows are super fun. It’s also interesting- the last album I listened to was Can’s “Tago Mago” with 17 minute songs, so this is an interesting contrast where the album is only 36 minutes long and the songs average around 2 minutes. She also really likes to repeat words and lyrics, probably why they’re called the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and some of the lyrics are flat-out dumb. She had nothing better to sing in Pin than the vocalization of the other instruments? My favorites: Maps, Y Control
Listened Before? N This is a strange album. It's almost 100% unlistenable for me. The screeching, repetitive, simplistic vocals are AWFUL. This is some hipster tripe from the early 2000s. That being said, Maps is an absolute banger. I don't understand how they could release a trash pile album like this, with a single song that stands head, shoulders, waist and knees above the rest. EDIT: I spoke too soon, Y Control is slightly better as well. Still, this is a solid 2/5, with only the two mentioned songs saving it from a dismal 1/5. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Maps
not really my vibe. might grow on me if i listen to it more.
average, not horrible, but not the best thing i’ve ever heard. i’d 100% listen to maps and y control again! not very many standout tracks overall though. but still a good debut album.
Some good songs, but alot of shouty post punk. It's strongest moments we're when they slow down a bit and play something with a melody, like Maps.
The vocal equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.
Another one I've had for years but barely recognize, with good reason. "Maps" apart, very meh. An odd period, a lot of derivative noise being showered with plaudits, this included.
2.5. First time hearing this band. I liked it and want to hear more.
Trash. I hate any band that almost exclusively uses that radio vocal effect.
Matig album, iets te vaag
Garage rock. The singer's voice is a bit grating. It's a no no no from me. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: Maps Date listened: 13/05/22
2.5 stars. Mostly post alternative screeching obnoxiousness
Upper end of 2/5. Really didn't like it at the beginning of my first listen yesterday, but it definitely grew on me towards the end and on a re-listen. The first few tracks are a bit tuneless and shouty, it gets much better later on when she sings rather than shouty. I'd heard Maps before (but didn't know the name of the song or that it was by them), didn't know any of the others. Not really for me, but not awful.
Man the vocals here are really an acquired taste. Everything else is pretty good but I just can't get over the parts where she sings high. The second half is better than the first one though.
Was ready to hit it straight with the one star as I was not having a good time listening to this, but the final batch of songs from Maps to Poor Song were decent enough to bump it up. Karen O has great chops as a vocalist, but the music of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs sounds as good as one of those wannabe grunge indie bands from High School that played the same song over and over again. Maybe its the PTSD talking but its not for me.
A couple good songs, high energy but overall not my favorite
Generic indie rock from a band that seems afraid of letting their lead singer truly take control. Maybe that's why Karen O doesn't even use her last name.
Eh. 5/10
Ok
Started a little slow, end of the album got better.
I liked the music but the lyrics were a bit much and the singer started to become obnoxious
I initially liked the sound until the 12th song sounded the exact same as the other 11. Got boring pretty quick.
Soup Only maps is an OK song
I understood < 10% of the lyrics on this album but I just kept turning it up and it kept getting better. Makes me want to take it to the man
A singer shouting somethin' all'a rage against the machine, but withour groove ...
It is just ok. Nothing really memorable about it.
not a big punk fan 4/10 kind of repetitive and boring
punk rock
another debut album on this list, grungy
I’m hearing a slightly better version of Gossip here.
i know its a garage rock revival album but man i wish it was more tracks like maps and Y control and less tracks like...black tongue...
No interest in this, I was too young when it came out and have no nostalgia for this sound. Don't think it aged particularly well either.
The music is kind of cool but the lyrics suck 4/10 : I don’t hate it and don’t love it
Poor song
Nope
Really only like Maps. Never been a fan
Same as pervious yeah yeah yeahs album I listened to, I can appreciate it but not for me
On first blush I feel more fondly towards this than other landfill indie trendsetters of the early noughties like The Strokes, probably because it has more Sleater-Kinney, PJ Harvey and Kathleen Hannah in. Scale without pomposity is a plus too. Basslessness isn't.
record is just not for me. i like noise but the noise on this record is not pleasant? i dunno.
Little rock
Meh
- Maps is amazing song but all that moaning in the others...
Again, not really my cup of tea but it was at least melodic. **
Meine innere Beth Ditto gibt magere 1.9
While maps is a classic song this was an album I listened to after what became my introduction and favorite album from YYYs- Show your bones. Sometimes I struggle to go back and connect with a bands previous and less refined sound.
No. . .
Not my thing. Great sound though.
I couldn't listen all the way through because the yeah yeah yeahs are not my favorite band
love the music, less so the vocals and lyrics. I did like a few specific songs a lot, like modern romance
It was ok, but did not feel very essential. Maps and Y control are great though.
Yeah. They’re so cool! But I don’t care.
A real mudpie of a record. Abysmal vocals, shit-like guitars, that boring early ‘00s sound. No thanks.
The only song I knew here was “Maps”, but it’s not enough to save this from being considered an absolute bag of guff.
Pre Listen: Please not another punk album. I'm so tired of punk albums. The guy in the middle of the album cover looks like he needs to be shoved in a locker. Incredibly low expectations going in. Notable Tracks: Rich - Oh, that's not a guy on the album cover. The locker-shovening is still happening regardless. Exactly what I expected ( ´_ゝ`). Date With The Night - I'm tired, boss. Tired of these punk albums. I don't know if I can finish this album. Man - My thoughts exactly. Man. This sucks. Not subjecting myself to anything further. Post Listen: Yet another album that further leads me to believe that punk-rock fans have brain damage. Maybe the damage was caused by all the alcohol their mothers drank when they were still fetuses. Maybe it's from all the shit they smoked as teenagers. Or maybe it's from prolonged exposure to god-awful music over the years. "The messy and distorted instruments are intentional!" Oh, so it's shit on purpose? "The ferral vocals are part of the style!" Oh, so it's shit on purpose? "It breaks societal norms and conventions of music, it's unique, that's what makes it cool!" Every punk album sounds the exact same, it is one of the least unique genres of music out there, it's about as cool as the singers probably smell. Look if you'd rather eat Waffle House or McDonalds over a home-made meal, by all means. Go eat shit, if that's what you prefer. I'll stick to things with substance however, thanks. 1/5.
Sry, not ny music
Horrible
Tiresome stuff. Achingly trendy. Obviously 5 stars for the music journos but for anyone with ears this is missable
Noisy, talk-singing indie that permeated the 2000s shopping mall experience. This album rests heavily on Maps and has no place on this list.
I just didn’t like it
no

Not my cup of tea
I am so disappointed. I didnt like this at all. Didnt finish it. Too screamy one star
Oooof. I like Maps. Turns out, I do not like the rest.
Maybe I’m just getting old, but this is just unmitigated noise, that at my most generous can only be described as just the clanking of instruments together. You gotta be physically or spiritually 15 to get anything out of this.
This didn't exactly start well because my immediate thought on the first riff of the first track was "wow this is irritating". Really hate the vocals, genuinely just unpleasant to listen to for the most part. Plus there's a few bits where she's cringily singing the guitar/drum track? Other times she's largely just literally screaming or moaning. Oh and of course it has the irritating studio recording bits thrown in too. Would actively avoid in future.
This was pretty ass for 90% of it. Then the last 3 songs were pretty good. But it's not enough to save it. I normally love really rough and raw sound/production/vocals. But most of this was just headache inducing
Some straight bullshit only good thing about it is that it's short
Ts genuinely sounds like the kind of shit some teenager in a tv show would play in their basement and say some shit like “we’re no 1 on the charts Billy!” I prefer Reuben the understander
The No No Nos. If there is a Music Hell then its house band would consist of Gary Glitter and his Glitter Band supergrouped with Black Country New Road, the James Last Orchestra, Adolf Hitler on vibes, Rolf Harris on didgeridoo and Karen O as front woman with Yoko Ono writhing around somewhere in the mix.
man, sounds like ass
no
I must be getting old because all I heard was a bunch of loud noise with routine squeals from a high-pitched, oversexed lead singer. Even the slower songs found a way to make me want to jump tracks. I’m sure someone, somewhere enjoys this style of “music” but it’s not me. …now get off my lawn!!
This is clearly punk, or more precisely post-punk and it’s probably good. If I ever need to break a cabal of militant feminists out of prison, this is definitely the album I’ll put on to pump me up before the deed. Otherwise, I doubt I’ll listen to this crap again.
Boring, generic pop.punk. I am fan of pop punk, but these guys are just completely dull. Over-produced sellout garbage. They're not innovative, or influential, or interesting in any way. I just don't get it. This is a band that, on paper, should be right up my alley. They tick just about every box for my tastes. But they're terrible. Not going to apologise for it, they don't deserve a spot on this list. If I have to pick a best song, it's probably Y Control. But I'm not exactly excited to come back and listen again. Poor Song is aptly named.
Absolutely tuneless except for a couple songs near the end. The vocals aren't bad but just over the top and grating.
langweilige Instrumentalparts, uninspirierter, nerviger Gesang, matschiger Mix, sägende Melodien
Music for biting into a metal fork vertically. 0/10
Complete shite! I couldn't make it to the end of track 3. I only persevered with tracks 1 & 2 in case it was a "starts badly but gets better" album. It may well be, but I'll never know.
Maps brings me back to my "rock band' days. But past that - i'm good on the yeah yeah yeahs
Well, I know I like Maps, but other than that, this will be a first for me. Ok well starting off...not strong. This is stressing me out. See Maps just feels so different than the rest of the album. And I like it. But I don't like the rest? The last two songs were fine.
errr… err… uhh… okay? on a serious note, i don’t really like indie so much and this is just… what? it’s not BAD but i just don’t understand the appeal. vocals play a huge factor for me to enjoy the music too and her voice just pisses me off, sorry. i guess i can understand why some people love this band (i literally listen to mr bungle who am i to judge)
too much anger, too little harmony
I did not enjoy this album when it was recommended to me back in 2003 and I did not enjoy this album now. I usually love female fronted rock acts. I love Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cranberries, 12 Rounds, Paramore, The Pretenders, and Blondie among a bunch of others, but this did not seem to have the quality or doing something as interesting as those luminaries. I think I might have enjoyed it more if the low end (doesn't have to be a bass guitar) were there to anchor some of these ideas. I'm not a fan of the early 2000s White Stripe-ifcation of rock that refused to use something in the bass range of the spectrum. Additionally I really wish that the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs had used dynamics as a tool of section phrasing and song phrasing. Everything quickly becomes an audio blur on this album through the relentless use of turning every knob on every song to 11. It renders most of the album absolutely forgettable. I think far too much is made of Karen O. I am not convinced that she is truly a great vocalist. I haven't really enjoyed either of the two albums from the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs that has appeared on this list so far. Furthermore this gives more evidence to me that the worst decade of popular music in the world really was the naughties (2000s).
Yeah. Indeed yeah. I get the intent and energy, it’s just not very listenable to me. Annoying high pitch screaming and irritating sexualized voice tricks.
I didn’t listen because I don’t care for the yeah yeah yeahs, but sometimes one of their slower songs makes me think “who is this?” Then I remember and I say Booooo!
Not my cup of tea.
1. rich - 1 2. date - 1.5 3. man - 1 4. tick - 1 5. tongue - 1 6. pin - 1 7. cold - 1.5 8. no - 1 9. mapz - 2 10. control - 1
Don't like the singers voice, so a no no for me instead of Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs
‘Modern Romance’ is actually really good and I would’ve liked more like it but honestly the album as a whole and really every song outside of that one was very… not good.
I like some "Yeah Yeah Yeah's", but this definitely isn't it. Probably some of my least favorite music I've heard from them, unfortunately
Couldn’t finish it. Voice got on my nerves.
This is horrible. So pretentious and "arty" which just equated to big mess. Even Maps being decent can't save this.
DNL
Sound wise, the instruments should fit together, but somehow they don't, most of the time. To compensate for the singers inability to sing in tune, they just made it sound like shes singing through a megaphone, ALL THE TIME, at least so it seams. Songs ain't bad, they just don't take me anywhere...
A annoying album. Singer far too needy and trying to be cool. I can imagine them all sitting around in tight jeans thinking how awesome they are. Hope they have been forced to get proper jobs in supermarkets or such.
Won’t be bothering with this again. No no no
Excruciating
Furchtbar!
Not my jam
noisy, loud, annoying
Maps is a Rock Band classic and the lone bright spot on this album. It also is feels so out of place on this album being that it is a good song.
Sounds like all instruments blaring at the same time. Loud, screachy
Pretty trash, but if you like it , well that's just great for you!
🤮🤮🤮
nice sound but not grabbing me
Yuk
Garbage
This sounds like sex noises in a can. I didn't know you could get away with making so many noises and not saying anything. Instrumentation is okay at points, but this is a mess and more noise than music. Fav tracks: N/A
The voice was annoying and it sounded like they were just hitting the instruments.
No.
Fairly annoying brand of early aughts indie. Not for me.
OMG! My ears are ringing and head throbbing! Just noise!!!
This album was a big nope for me. A few songs with some merit but the screaming ones just make the album unlistenable.
No me gusta ese estilo
Not my cup of tea. Boring lyrics. Boring music.
Not my stule
I made it 17 minutes into this squealing noisefest. I listen to crazy shit like Native Nod or Guts Pie Earshot but this is just grating.
Kokonaisuutena tylsä. En jaksanut innostua levyllisestä itseään toistavia kappleita, joissa nainen toistaa hokemia. En kuuntelisi uudelleen.
AGAINST THE GRAIN. WACK.
Mostly not my style and more harsh
Niks voor mij
Vocal vibes of Pat Benatar. Wouldn’t buy it or listen to it again but don’t hate it.
Meh, not for me
paskaa *****rokkia taas kerrankin. yllätys iso käjättiyllätys holu fucl... se momentti kun rokkikitara präjäyttää ja laulaja laulaa ja rumpali rummuttaa..se momentti on hullu...crazy youth..this describes the old days...young and wild...free...free... black tongue
uninteresting mix of punk and indie
karen o's greatest work will always be the 'where the wild things are' soundtrack
One of the worst albums i've ever had the displeasure of listening to
Maybe I caught this at the wrong time, but what a load of tosh. Rock music was never meant to be this boring! Even the prog dinosaurs of the 1970s don't sound as lumpen as this. It's pure zombie rock, lurching from one track to another, the half-life of rebellion and revelation flickering only fleetingly behind dead eyes. What's with this cack production job too, eh? Sounds like they recorded this in a toilet. Perhaps they did.
I really didn't enjoy it, incredibly irritating.
Very unpleasant
I couldn't be bothered.
Still listening
Yeah this is not it for me. Too grungy and non coherent and the voice just doesn't do it for me.
I’ve always know about this band but never listened to the full album. Maps is a great song but it is wildly different than the rest of this album. The singer has a pretty rough voice when she yells and sings loudly. The instrumentals are ok but they just feel like generic punk hardcore playing. One song can’t save this album. 2.9/10
Nothing memorable, and her voice was annoying.
yeah
I maintain that there was absolutely no good music released between the end of 2001 and the middle of 2005. This album, released slap bang in 2003, emphasises that point admirably. I quite some of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's stuff. This album is painful. It is disjointed, lacking in theme. They scale up the anarchic without compensating with hooks, beats or talent. It is cacophonic in a way that assaults the earballs in a thoroughly unpleasant way. The drums just don't work. The vocals don't work. The guitars, guess what - don't work. The bass is tight, but doesn't fit with anything else. It's just seventeen different varieties of wrong all mashed up in a bucket, and I hate it more than words can express. Saying that. It's probably the best music to have emerged in that timeframe.
oh my god this is actually a god awful album that made me want to drive my head into a wall. NO. no no no no no. i dislike everything about it.
maps
got 10 seconds in, nope
I immediately like that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a song called no no no. I listened to this right after Waylon Jennings -- I don't know if that helped or hurt. I believe I've heard mostly good things about this group but am struggling to name a single song I've heard by them. Starting out with the first song on this album, "Rich", I don't love it. The music is basic in a good way, especially minus the distortion, but the singer and vibe reminds me of places people and things I don't enjoy or want to think about. I like punk mostly, I like garage rock like the White Stripes quite a bit. But I really don't like this, mostly for personal reasons not musical reasons, just how it hit my brain and emotions, and would be just fine never hearing it again. It just stresses me out. If I hadn't heard the rest maybe Maps would be tolerable. But in context, thanks, no.
Lots of noise, not a whole lot of musicality for me.
Nothing of note, mostly lacking any melodic or memorable sequences.
hated it
Second yeah yeah yeahs album on this list You don't need more than one of these.
Bloody awful. Repetitive, slippy and boring.
Really did nothing for me
Too rowdy
Had a fine time listening to this, going back to my school days when I wondered why everyone was so into the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Pleased to report nothing has changed.
Screamy
Inte min kopp te precis. A.k.a krikke sound
It's poppy, it's punky, and generally uninteresting
Awful
Not a fan of the sound. I think they have better albums tbh
