I’ve always know about this band but never listened to the full album. Maps is a great song but it is wildly different than the rest of this album. The singer has a pretty rough voice when she yells and sings loudly. The instrumentals are ok but they just feel like generic punk hardcore playing. One song can’t save this album. 2.9/10

AMAZING

The thing I like about jazz is that it changes every time you listen to it. No two performances are alike. Each one is a moment in time never to be duplicated but is it possible that jazz doesn't exist outside of live performances? Obviously this isn't jazz but I think FTT best exists as an experience. It's a stream of consciousness and difficult to anticipate what's going to happen next. No track illustrates this better than Tick Tick where KO's breath ends in a frenzied display of self-dysregulation. I'd like to be swept up in the mayhem of the moment if I was watching this live, but this is a hard transition thru Spotify.

I love "Fever To Tell" so, so much. One of the most raw, unrestrained, manic debut albums, and yet it is most known for the passionate restraint of "Maps." That song is deserving of its legacy, but the rest of the album's frenetic energy is what made Yeah Yeah Yeahs undeniable. Karen O is one of those truly special lead singers that is so infectious and magnetic, and the way she lets loose puts Yeah Yeah Yeahs over the top. "Fever To Tell" is also special because Yeah Yeah Yeahs never quite repeated that unbridled explosion. "Show Your Bones" and "It's Blitz" are both also favorites of mine, but very different from this debut. And I think we still have "It's Blitz" yet to come on the list!

It's loud, high-energy, punk flavored rock that set the stage for all the female fronted rock bands I love today.

Delightfully noisy.

Nice changes of pace in these tracks but they always maintain the post punk energy. Siouxsie and the Banshees meets The Pretenders. Simultaneously sophisticated and uncomplicated.

Some good songs, but alot of shouty post punk. It's strongest moments we're when they slow down a bit and play something with a melody, like Maps.

Another one I've had for years but barely recognize, with good reason. "Maps" apart, very meh. An odd period, a lot of derivative noise being showered with plaudits, this included.

I maintain that there was absolutely no good music released between the end of 2001 and the middle of 2005. This album, released slap bang in 2003, emphasises that point admirably. I quite some of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's stuff. This album is painful. It is disjointed, lacking in theme. They scale up the anarchic without compensating with hooks, beats or talent. It is cacophonic in a way that assaults the earballs in a thoroughly unpleasant way. The drums just don't work. The vocals don't work. The guitars, guess what - don't work. The bass is tight, but doesn't fit with anything else. It's just seventeen different varieties of wrong all mashed up in a bucket, and I hate it more than words can express. Saying that. It's probably the best music to have emerged in that timeframe.

2.5. First time hearing this band. I liked it and want to hear more.

Matig album, iets te vaag

At the time I thought Fever to Tell was an astonishingly good debut both in terms of the music but also the style of the band. I enjoyed the following 2 albums, but then hadn't thought of them since. Revisiting their debut many years later and it hasn't lost any of its urgency and cool. Love it.

Not that bad as i thought the rise of indie was

Long time fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, was looking forward to this as part of the last 8 albums on this list. Faves: Date With The Night, Maps, Modern Romance.

I didn't like this album as much as It's Blitz, which I first encountered with this list. Compared to that, this album didn't really have any songs that stuck out. However, I love the sound of this band, and I still thought that this was worth a listen. Poppy and gritty at the same time 4/5

A pleasant rock album - good vocals, solid tracks, lyrically interesting enough not to offend, short enough not to overstay its' welcome, does some interesting things with the sound - I had fun, in short, but it's nothing to write home about. or write anywhere at all, for that matter

Heads will roll, but not on this album. Pretty bland - didn't mind it, but I wasn't convinced.

High energy, some beats I really enjoyed, sometimes a bit too much, especially the voice.

A solid album front to back. Ended up being much heavier than I anticipated having really only known Maps going in.

oh my god this is actually a god awful album that made me want to drive my head into a wall. NO. no no no no no. i dislike everything about it.

No No No. These screechy gimmicky-radio-frequency vocals get old by the 2nd song. And it's not a single, which means there were 10 more to get through. (jumping back in after I wrote an angry review to say that "Maps" is actually pretty decent, if still *sounding* lousy overall - if only the rest of the album were like this I could have dealt. Got rid of the tired effects on the vocals, she actually sings, decent mood-building. Ok I now return to my previous diatribe...) I may have recalled occasionally interesting or potentially interesting music but a lot of it sounded too lo-fi / shitty production ala White Stripes (hate) but ahhhhhh ALL I CAN REALLY REMEMBER IS TICK TICK T T T T T TICK TICK TICK shut it 2/10 1 star.

Reminds me a bit of one of my favourite bands, Dead Sara. Nice.

Upper end of 2/5. Really didn't like it at the beginning of my first listen yesterday, but it definitely grew on me towards the end and on a re-listen. The first few tracks are a bit tuneless and shouty, it gets much better later on when she sings rather than shouty. I'd heard Maps before (but didn't know the name of the song or that it was by them), didn't know any of the others. Not really for me, but not awful.

Overall it's good, but not enough to hook me in. Favourites: "Date With The Night", "Pin", "Maps"

Man the vocals here are really an acquired taste. Everything else is pretty good but I just can't get over the parts where she sings high. The second half is better than the first one though.

Reminds me of a punkier, more abstract Screaming Females with a layer of slick, chimey production on top as was common in early-aughts indie. It does seem to me the album loses steam halfway through, especially as Karen O's vocals tend to wear thin. However, the sound and orchestration of the tracks are killer - if the band had varied things a little throughout the album's runtime this would easily be a 4-5 star LP.

I love that the songs feel almost put of control. Karen O's vocals really contribute to that feeling. I can understand why this would be great live.

Listened to this quite a bit back in the day, along with most of the other big NYC bands of the era. Karen O's vocals are definitely the best part. She keeps it fun, even exhilarating, throughout - even on the slower songs towards the end of the album. She's like a hyperactive Chrissie Hynde. This remains their best album. There are alot of great tracks here but "Pin" was always my favorite and still is.

I know of Yeah Yeah Yeahs from Maps and "Heads Will Roll", but also heard "Y Control" although I didn't know the title. In general I'm a fan, a few songs on this album I'm not really into, but the ones I am into I am very into. Rich and Y Control are my two stand-outs, but Maps is still good although almost like a different album since it's so mellow. I also enjoyed listening to the 4 track demos on the Deluxe edition, they are all so much distorted but overall I think they made the right choices for the actual album's sound.

Trippy and energetic.

Decent high-energy punk rock. A bit too in-your-face for me I think, but I could see how it ended up on this list. Also Maps is just one of the best songs ever made so that helps. 5/10

This album was part of the garage rock revival movement in the late 90s and early 2000s. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs combine fuzzy rock elements with art punk to form an exciting driving music that features the extraordinary vocals of Karen O. A lot of the elements here can be heard in later indie rock music yet it still sounds fresh to me despite being over 20 years old.

Reminds me of a band playing at high school in a acoobie doo movie. I love it, fresh Colley rock. I like her voice and the whole vibe. Not every song works but overall a lot of fun to listen to.

good rock n roll fun

Was ready to hit it straight with the one star as I was not having a good time listening to this, but the final batch of songs from Maps to Poor Song were decent enough to bump it up. Karen O has great chops as a vocalist, but the music of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs sounds as good as one of those wannabe grunge indie bands from High School that played the same song over and over again. Maybe its the PTSD talking but its not for me.

Nice enough, I remember Maps being on Guitar Hero, or Rock Band or something. Nice listen.

Fun album, reminds of high school.

A couple good songs, high energy but overall not my favorite

I thought I'd enjoy this album but weirdly enough Karen O's voice starts to feel a bit samey from song to song. It is more the production style, with the compression, which feels like it's trying to disguise her jazzy singing style. But there are some great tracks on Fever To Tell, including the iconic "Maps" and the stellar opening number "Rich".

If I’ve ever taken for granted the good fortune of being born in 1959 and growing up listening to the music recorded in the sweet, still innocent 60s, the hard rockin’ 70s, the post punk/new wave 80s, and the grunge of the 90s… then 'Fever To Tell' is my catalyst for repentance. When I read that Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs represented a garage band rock revival, my heart skipped a beat. And then I actually listened to this LP myself, and my heart broke. Count Five, The Electric Prunes, ? and the Mysterians this ain’t! Not by a long shot. Where to begin? Three-piece combos can present a challenge (Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are devoid of a bassist- a rock band without a bass!!!), unless you’re Jimi Hendrix and the Experience, or Cream, or ZZ Top, or Grand Funk Railroad, or the James Gang, or Rush, or ELP, or the Police, or… OK, so maybe three-piece bands aren’t necessarily as challenged as I first thought. Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs sure are, though. Musically and lyrically tedious. ‘No No No’ was the only song that featured a mildly interesting change in tempo and melody (although the listener will be hard pressed to actually hear a melody in the first place). Furthermore, I missed it’s significance, other than offering a welcome relief from the general sonic monotony. (Not that I don’t enjoy a good hour’s worth of Nadja in all it’s cacophonic sameness; but again, this ain’t Nadja anymore than the Kingsmen.) Mercifully, 'Fever To Tell' only clocks in at a brief 37 minutes. I’ve endured a lot worse for a lot longer. And before I forget, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, can you please explain your use of sleigh bells to conclude this LP? I don’t know which was worse: Karen O’s nasally, whiney (think female Jack White; although, yet again, I love Jack White) vocals, or the repetitive themed lyrics, attributed to the entire band: I met a dude, I fucked a dude, I think I really like this dude, I’m losing/lost this dude. And here’s a kicker: on two songs (‘Black Tongue’ and ‘Cold Light’), this ‘dude’ happens to be the singer’s sibling! ‘Cold light, hot night, be my heater, be my lover, and we could do it to each other, well, like a sister and a brother. Go go go go go! ... Ride, Daddy, ride.’ This out-creeps my grandmother on mom’s side of the family addressing my grandfather, affectionately, with the name, ‘Daddy.’ In this increasingly hypersensitive culture of 2022, I’m going to go out on a limb here and pronounce incest as wrong, wrongy wrong. (By the way, let’s go ahead and add Jerry Lee Lewis to the list of who this band is not.) I hope singer Karen O’s current relationship fares better than the others about which she sings. ‘Y Control’: ‘I wish I could buy back the woman you stole.’ That’s awfully sad. And my heart genuinely goes out to her. Don’t tell her what I’m about to tell you, ‘cause I don’t want to kick someone when they’re already down; but, I wish I could buy back the 37 minutes I spent listening to this dreadful LP.

Generic indie rock from a band that seems afraid of letting their lead singer truly take control. Maybe that's why Karen O doesn't even use her last name.

I’m not the biggest fan of her voice or style of singing, but I enjoyed this overall. 3 stars.

The first two thirds of the album are good but the last third of this is fantastic.

First, let's start with the cover. It's horrible. Doesn't suit the album. Great album - debut three piece noise rock - of it's time certainly, but has enough hits to lift itself. And Maps - wonderful, especially the video.

4.0 + The Yeah Yeah Yeahs blazed in on a wave of media buzz back in the early aughts so it’s strange to think that they now seem relegated to a mere footnote within that Brooklyn-DIY-indie scene. On hindsight, Karen O's stage persona always smacked of performance art, overly ironic with little heartfelt emotion to draw in the listener (note two exceptions: “Maps” and “Modern Romance”). That said, I do adore Nick Zinner’s guitar sound, a rainbow colored chainsaw.

p894. 2003. 3 stars. Came cold to this one, didn't know anything about the band or the album. Well done garage rock, great voice, but nothing here that hasn't been been done before (and better) by Siouxsie, PJ Harvey, Garbage or Elastica. It's good, and I'd listen to it again, but not sure why it's on the list as it's neither innovative or anything special.

Wow, this is awesome! I was not expecting that from the cover. There's just so much energy, the screechy guitars, the crazy yelling vocals and lyrics. Favorite tracks are: "Pin", "Date With The Night", "Y Control". Very strong 4/5, maybe even a 5/5.. depends how I'm feeling tomorrow morning.

Exciting album. Exciting times! Part of the Post Strokes/Hives breaking the indie wall and making music fun again. Big Beat and electronica no longer felt new, Nu Metal was getting old and indie was all Radiohead/Jeff Buckley sound alikes. A frantic call from a friend in New York, sent me to see one off show by them in 2001 at the Annadale Hotel. It was a blistering performance and I was amazed by all the sounds coming out of Nick Zimmer's guitar. Karen O was a front woman extraordinare and had a whole room of people who knew maybe one song if that eating up the worthy hype. So this album captures that night perfectly. The production really captures that energy and style and makes this a perfect debut. Date With Night and Maps couldn't be two more different songs and that extreme is one of the things that still has me loving this album nearly 20 years on

Je me rappellerai toujours le soir où les Yeah Yeah Yeahs ont présenté cet album à Baltard en 2007. Ils avaient reçu un bleu mais surtout trois rouges de la part de Marianne Janes, Dove Attia, et Manu Katché. La première les avait tout simplement recadrés : « Cette année, M6 a émis des doutes sur l'idée de continuer l'émission, on a insisté, on a finalement réussi à renouveler le contrat pour une saison, et ce soir vous leur avez donné raison. C'est tout simplement pas du niveau de Baltard, je suis désolée. » Le public avait pris le parti des Yeah Yeah Yeahs en huant Marianne mais la déception était quand même lisible sur les visages des membres du groupe. « On est vraiment déçus que ça vous ait pas plu, on essaiera de faire mieux la prochaine fois… » répondirent-ils par l'intermédiaire de la chanteuse Karen O sous une légère ovation consolante du public.

J'ai bien écouté cet album comme convenu dans la charte du générateur, malheureusement j'ai oublié d'écrire mon review une fois celui ci terminé. Par conséquent, cet album étant fort peu intéressant, ni même remarquable, je n'ai evidemment plusieurs heures après rien à en dire. Néammoins demain Elvis Costello sera au menu, et je compte bien lui faire sa fête. A très vite.

Cool modern-punk album. Maps was a pleasant surprise, but most of the rest of the album was much heavier which was wonderful.

Middle of the road

I think this is the first time listening to this album in full. I was already a fan of the yeah yeah yeahs, having the album it’s a Blitz and familiar with the song maps. Really enjoyed this album it’s a lot rawer than it’s a blitz and full of energy. One I will add to my rotation. Also learned today my wife seen the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs at a festival in 2006, didn’t think she was into them, she wasn’t…

Maps is really the only thing this album has going for it and it's a good song, not a great one. The rest is mostly the worst aspects of indie meets a really toothless brand of punk rock I suppose you could call it. Karen O has a pretty good voice. The other guys are...present. It's a shame the band didn't write more than one decent song for her to sing.

On the first song and already hating it. Why is this even on this list? It got slightly better later on but not much. All I hear is some girl trying to be all cutesy and pretending she's tough. But this is nothing more than some poppy bullshit passed as something more because it's noisy, I guess. Not really punk either, and it's gonna tank my average for a genre I like, which kinda makes me hate it more.

Fever To Tell is a nice indie rock album. I like some other albums of Yeah Yeah Yeahs better. This is nothing shocking in quality or deliverance. Still it's good fun to listen to for a couple of times.

I remember thinking Yeah Yeah Yeah were style over substance at the time. A fringe in need of a song. That was unfair, as Pin and Maps are both timeless classics, both 5/5 songs. The rest of the album has some good songs (Rich, Date With the night) and some that must have gone some way to forming my original unfair opinion of them. It's sad, when they can write a thrashy fun cut like Pin, and genuine timeless heart breaker like Maps, that so much of the rest of the album feels so 'this'll do'. They clearly had more in the tank, as Heads Will Roll is a banger later on. But then they also had Gold Lion. Would that they got a producer who would tell them that a lot of their songs are unfinished.

Maps is a great song. Album with attitude, which perhaps wins out over the actual music.

I immediately like that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a song called no no no. I listened to this right after Waylon Jennings -- I don't know if that helped or hurt. I believe I've heard mostly good things about this group but am struggling to name a single song I've heard by them. Starting out with the first song on this album, "Rich", I don't love it. The music is basic in a good way, especially minus the distortion, but the singer and vibe reminds me of places people and things I don't enjoy or want to think about. I like punk mostly, I like garage rock like the White Stripes quite a bit. But I really don't like this, mostly for personal reasons not musical reasons, just how it hit my brain and emotions, and would be just fine never hearing it again. It just stresses me out. If I hadn't heard the rest maybe Maps would be tolerable. But in context, thanks, no.

This is an album that seems to be magically created. Everything works, and the three of them just have an out of world chemistry. An absolute superb and instant classic from the golden age of indie.

So, the New York garage rock/punk/post-punk revival, eh? I was 18 at the time, and as big as the movement was, it didn't appeal to me on the whole, despite my love of garage rock, punk and post-punk. This was partly an aversion to hype, partly that I found certain bands flat (I'm rather curious how I'd find The Strokes nowadays), and partly a nascent disdain for what I have come to recognise as record-collection rock (I don't believe I'm the first to use that; I think it owes its coinage to the music writer Simon Reynolds, but theft is pretty much the easiest crime to justify materially). I have previously reviewed The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' subsequent album It's Blitz, and found it acceptable enough, but also safe, timid and frustrating in its refusal to move from the middle. To this album's credit, it at least heads somewhere. But it also underscores my main issue with record-collection rock; often the album are corkers, but also redundant. Why listen to a band heavyhandedly alluding to PiL and The Germs when one can, you know, just listen to PiL and The Germs? This is an issue the album battles with, not wholly successfully. We see a significant variation of styles delivered in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' manner, but not every attempt works, and the album is quite uneven (does anyone need their foray in dub No No No? Not really not really not really. Also, note that post-punk groups had been tackling dub in a less contrived manner over 20 years earlier). The album improves as one gets towards the end. I can accept that many people really embrace Maps, and I've no inclination to disabuse people of that, even if it personally doesn't quite hit my G-spot. The closers Y Control and Modern Romance are probably my favourites, and the hidden track is fun as well. So a bottom-loaded album. But the main reason the last few tracks surpass the first half significantly is that Karen O drops the obnoxious wackiness and sings like a being with a human heart. Does that mean the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' central conceit, Karen O's stance as frontwoman, was misconceived at conception? Not quite, but ultimately, what we have is a talented band not quite sure what direction to pursue, so they try as many as possible somewhat cursorily. This is a better failing than It's Blitz' lack of any direction, but it's still a criticism.

Grew on me w additional listens!

So of all the albums/genres i'm discovering and loving for the first time, i've realised most are punk-rock. Raw, dance-indie - this is now downloaded as an instant pick me up on the bleakest of days.

It definitely has a sound that is very specific to its time. I could get into it with more listens, but I just don't have the attention span for it today. It's okay. It got better towards the end of the album.

83. Fever to Tell - Yeah Yeah Yeahs 12 tracks. This started off well (sort of punky electronic funk). but I don't like the "tinny" production sound. I quite like the nuts & bolts of it, (& it's obviously meant to sound "tinny"), but I don't understand why. 3/5

That's interesting to know this album and nowadays it's absolutely obvious their influence on modern rock songs. However, listening to it today, I can't see so many qualities in these songs. They are nice to listen to, but nothing more.

I was very much won over when I heard the opening lyric "I'm rich" purred by Karen O. I really enjoyed this track and her vocals. The rest just kind of made me feel on edge. I think it's a well-crafted album, but it's too much for me.

I have heard of the band, but I am not really familiar with their music, and this was my first listen for this album. I imagine that if I had been a fan when I was younger, then I would still be a fan and really be thrilled to have it come up on this list...but I was not, so it was just okay for me. I did love the tone and style of the the female lead vocals (and the very fact that the lead is female)! I also enjoyed the drive and bass line of many of the tunes. I just couldn't really embrace the fierceness of the punk/garage style. Maybe I am getting too old??

I knew Rich and Maps going into today but hadn't listened to the whole album before. This isn't really my kind of music and I don't know that I'll want to do the whole thing again but I listened to it a few times today and enjoyed it well enough. The opening of Rich is an excellent start to a record and I love Karen O's snarling, screaming vocals throughout. The lyrics in many of the songs include long stretches of a single word or phrase repeated over and over (rich-rich-rich-rich-rich-rich; choke, choke, choke; tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick; uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh-ooh; bam-bam-bam-bam-bam-bam-bam-bam dunuh-dunuh-dunuh-dunuh). This totally worked for me. The almost gentle Modern Romance is a nice change of pace after so much screaming and blistering guitar. Love the sweet vocal quality, the simple steady beat, and the quiet jingle bells on this song. The last track Poor Song starts with an off-key mmm-chh that I could listen to all day and a line that is my personal philosophy, "Baby, I'm afraid of a lot of things, but I ain't scared of loving you."

A friend of mine years ago made me a mix tape, and on it was the song “Maps” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I loved that song, but never further investigated the group behind it. I’m glad to have the opportunity to rectify that now. FEVER TO TELL is a gritty, passionate carnival of song lead by an incredible snarling, cooing, moaning, screaming vocal performance by Karen O supported mostly by grinding guitars and pounding drums. The opening number “Rich” was exhilarating to me as the album opened, then “Date With The Night” amps things up a few notches with some incredible vocals shouting ‘CHOKE CHOKE CHOKE CHOKE.’ Then in a 1-2-3 punch Karen O takes it up another notch in “Man.” WOW what a song. She punctuates the song with this sort of falsetto that is incredible. “Tick” follows and seems to just rocket the album forward. The energy is incredible as she ‘tick tick tick tick ticks’ and ‘loo-oo-oo-oo-ooses’ her way through the song. The ‘tick tick ticks’ at the end are incredible. Karen O is constantly surprising to me - witness “Black Tongue’s” ‘uh-huh-uh-huh-uh-huh-ooooh!’ The lyrics are a lot of fun too, ‘boy you’re just a stupid bitch and girl, you just a no good dick.’ More fun ensues in “Pin” with the crazy ‘bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, dunno, dunno, dunno, dunno’ lyrics. “Cold Light” has such a great opening. A slower song still with all the energy. “No No No” has a great slow-fast thing going on. By the time I get to “Maps” it was so exciting to hear those opening drums again. Funny in the context of the album it is one of the quieter songs thus far. It almost feels like Karen O is holding back on this one. “Y Control” continues along that energy level, then we get “Modern Romance,” a softer almost intimate song, followed by “Poor Song,” a really quiet, almost dirge-like ending to the album that brings the whole thing to a quiet, sudden stop. This was a lot of fun to listen to. I also love looking at the album cover. Absolutely loved it!

What a feel this album has. Sexy, sultry a slow burn. Karen Os voice is a thing of beauty and never ceases to captivate. Best songs; Modern Romance, Y Control, Rich and of course the sumptuous Maps. 4 🌟

Started a little slow, end of the album got better.

I liked the music but the lyrics were a bit much and the singer started to become obnoxious

Glorious bit of early noughties New York indie rock. Karen O absolutely kills it, and the guitar sounds are very much synonymous of the time.

Their sound, bordering on garage-rock of the 1960s and on the new wave of the late 1970s, is the quintessence of sexual frustration and existential desperation. The singer proves to be one of the best shouters of her generation. (6/10) FT: Maps, Date with the Night

This is a selection which absolutely deserves a place on this list, and I would have put it in my personal canon years and years ago. Still holds up. I hadn't picked up on the basslessness explicitly before, but it helps bring out Karen's vocals, squeezed through something before reaching the ear. For the most part, the songs are energy-fests, burning up as they fade out. The pop inclinations are there, but don't surface completely on this album. That might be for the best: It's a more consistent project even if it has duller aural peaks than some of their other albums. The second half dips in intensity, proving that breadth is eminently possible for the band.

The more I listened, the more I liked it. I’ve known about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for a while, but I’ve always kinda kept to the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand for my early 00s rock- and man I’ve been missing out. Not every song on here has the same pacing, but they all have that same manic energy, and it wasn’t till I got to the flip side of the album that I really got into it. Never before has my thought on an album and a band flipped so quickly . I’d say No No No was the track that really got me on board, though Maps and Y Control-how it flows into each other- most excellent. Modern Romance is also amazing. Good job Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Idk, I just don't really get them

They have the early 2000s alt sound lined up and nailed. Date With The Night is abound with lipstick and neon. Maps is a great tune. Cool album, will need another spin

It’s got some swagger but it loses a lot of steam in the back half. I think it’s a better project as individual songs, but listening as a sum gets a bit to samey. I did quite like it, overall, though. Between a 3 and a 4 here.

Consistent and sturdy aggro-fem pop. Rad as hell. The only thing holding this back is that it is too consistent, as it holds a little sameness throughout.

Ik kan hier weinig tot niets mee. Heel af en toe is er iets van een melodie te ontwaren, maar verder is het vooral een hoop noise en geschreeuw.

Niet alles even tof, soms iets te schreeuwerig, maar ik hou wel van het puntige en de gedrevenheid.

Really did nothing for me

Yeah Yeah Yeahs' debut album was a lot of fun to listen to! The garage rock and punk music genre is very entertaining, and the band was able to show the listener how much they enjoyed making this album.

Und alle so: yeah. Erinnert nicht nur wegen dem overdrive auf dem Mikro (haben das seinerzeit eigentlich ALLE New Yorker Bands so gemacht?) etwas an The Strokes. Rocken aber mehr als die Strokes. Sobald ein Genre-Attribut „-punk“ enthält, schrecke ich ja instinktiv zurück, das hier hat mir allerdings ausgesprochen gut gefallen. Mehr als 3 Sterne, gerade so 4.

Looking at the album cover, I'm gonna establish a baseline of 2/5 and go from there lol. aaaand it's noisy indie alternative stuff. At least the music matches the manic album art... I guess? Lots of processed vocal theatrics, and everything is buried in the mix underneath the singing and drums. It's like they heard the White Stripes and decided they could do the same, but ignored the good songwriting and instead dialled the oddest, most manic bits up to 11. So the end result is all the annoying loud tendencies of indie rock and nothing else. It has a really bratty lyrical cynicism to it that just seems fucking childish, too. "ha ha here's an angry lyric but it's done with a cutesy girly squeal!" uuugh spare me the beautiful disaster/harley quinn routine, loser. The 2/5 stays.

i know its a garage rock revival album but man i wish it was more tracks like maps and Y control and less tracks like...black tongue...

Generally liked this and Maps is still a standout. A little bit too punk for when I listened, but I will go back. Now reminded to go back and listen to Karen O and Dangermouse, which I remember liking more than this

No interest in this, I was too young when it came out and have no nostalgia for this sound. Don't think it aged particularly well either.

How many YYY albums are on this list anyway? This one is a burner but ends flat. Karen O's vocals are sexy and scary.

Y control is a bop.

Maps is great.

Opening track is such a banger of an introduction. Karen’s vocal effects throws me back to early 2000s teen movies. I found the songs remained interesting all the way through, with a cool ability to shock us with unexpected sections or directions without being messy or chaotic.

Karen O channels a fire reminiscent of The Runaways. Fever To Tell runs top heavy and some of that side A flare depletes. But the vocal performance of O is what elevates straightforward hard rockin into a energetic disorienting record a cut different from fellow acts of the day. The track Maps, slows down and takes on an sensual tone and remains the most enigmatic feature on the LP.

On first blush I feel more fondly towards this than other landfill indie trendsetters of the early noughties like The Strokes, probably because it has more Sleater-Kinney, PJ Harvey and Kathleen Hannah in. Scale without pomposity is a plus too. Basslessness isn't.

Little rock

Many great songs. Highly energetic.

With this album the Yeah Yeah Yeahs emerged as major influencers of the new alt rock movement of the mid-2000's. It is easy to see their impact and growth while keeping a unique sound.

Wild and enjoyable

Quite fun garage rock fused with punk. Having listened to a fair bit of garage rock and a lot of punk, this didn't really seem like anything remarkable. I like the female vocalist's style. I would rather listen to The Reatards or the New Bomb Turks, or many others.

Favourite Songs: Pin & Maps

The worst type of indie music, all drums and attitude but with very little soul.

Riding on the early wave of New York indie bands with their contemparies the Strokes, Interpol and the Walkmen, the YYYs and this album provide a positive nostalgia kick. The album opens with a bolt of energy, dips slightly in the middle before hitting hard with two indie disco classics (Maps & Y Control).

Lead singers voice felt too try-hard and put me off a lot of the songs. Sounded like a continous soundtrack to Scott Pilgrim. Best track: Y Control

I liked it. Generally this isn't really my style of music, but on this album the intensity and atmosphere just hit the right notes for me.

Somehow they make a striped back garage sound seems fat and juicy, this album still sounds great nearly 20 years on. Powerful drumming and great guitar hooks but it’s Karen O’s incredible vocals that really stand out. More importantly this album has some really great songs on it. The song sequencing irritates me and ruins the flow and overall impact of the album a little. But still a cracking wee album

It’s not really my favorite type of music and I didn’t like all of the vocals. I definitely thought the second half of the album was better than the first half. Maps is certainly the best song on the album. Other favorites include Y Control, No No No, and Modern Romance. Least favorites include Tick, and Cold Night. I’m glad I listened to it but I don’t see myself coming back to it all that much. Strong 6/10

Genau der Typ Frau, auf die ich damals stand, schwarze Frise, asymmetrischer Pony, kunstvoll zerrissene Nylons, Nietengürtel, schwarze Lederjacke. Seltsam nur, dass mich das Album damals wie heute über weite Strecken kalt lässt. „Maps“ werde ich immer lieben, aber das Gros der Songs erinnert an zu sehr 16 Uhr, Nebenbühne, wohlwollendes Kopfnicken im Takt. Meine innere Beth Ditto gibt magere 1.9

Erlebt man ja auch nicht ständig, dass ein Album nach hinten raus besser wird. Hier ist das und auch gut so. Hatte mich erst gefragt, warum damals eigentlich die Strokes und nicht die Yeah Yeah Yeahs als große Retter des Rock’n’Rolls galten - aber schnell auch gedacht, dass a) die halt dich deutlich poppiger/gefälliger waren und b) das jetzt auch nicht so weit weg ist von dem was zB Boss Hog schon früher angefangen haben. Außerdem ist mir persönlich Musik ohne Bass auch irgendwann zu, hm, dünn, trotz des ganzen Gebratzes. Aber wie gesagt: nach hinten dann doch noch gut rausgekommen! 3,2

I was looking forward to this, as I really like "Maps," but the rest of the album didn't hit similarly. Reminded me a bit of Amanda Palmer.

I'm not sure why I didn't know that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs lead singer was a woman? I'm sure I've heard songs by them before, but I'm not sure what. Maybe one of them will come up on this album soon. Initial reaction is that this is good music for motivation days--when you're cleaning your house or working out. I don't love the high-pitched squeal thing she does, but I'm sure that's some of the appeal and like "classic Yeah Yeah Yeahs". This reminds me of something that Kat would listen to in 10 Things I Hate About You. Okay, here's where I come back around -- Maps is an excellent song. I wish more of their music were like this.

Whoever said this group was “Led Zeppelin with estrogen” (e.g. John Pareles, Nick Kent) was way off. Karen O has nowhere near the range or blues sensitivity of Robert Plant. Nick Zinner can’t touch Jimmy Page. Brian Chase isn’t in the same universe as John Bonham. Having no bass player (Yeah Yeah Yeahs would be a lot better if they had one) there’s no way to compare John Paul Jones. And as a group, they’re too mechanical. YYYs completely lack LZ’s dynamic vitality. So let’s just quietly set aside the Led Zeppelin comparison, intending no offense to politically correct critics desperate to promote a “female rocker” (which is almost an oxymoron, anyway). On its own merits, the album is interesting enough, worth a listen, even if just for the sake of gender diversity. But I myself have heard (indeed played) better ‘garage rock’ and ‘garage punk’ in actual garages. I give it a ‘two’.

Overall I enjoyed it. I think the second half is a lot stronger. The song structure is much better in the second half. I felt the first half was really all over the place. Overall I enjoyed it

punk isn't something that i naturally gravitate towards and Im not sure why because I have a lot of natural anger; I just prefer "singing" and less heavy lead guitar; first heard "Maps" when Martin and I played rock band and that is more melodic so it was nice to hear that one again

While maps is a classic song this was an album I listened to after what became my introduction and favorite album from YYYs- Show your bones. Sometimes I struggle to go back and connect with a bands previous and less refined sound.

Sooo sooo impressive. "Man" gives the title to the album. The Amazon Music album has 29 songs. Maps (My Angus Please Stay?) is a masterpiece that carries the album.
