Reviews (page 7 of 10)

A pretty tasty fusion of punk-rock and early 2000's indie. Lots of substance, and a pretty enjoyable listen. However, it's just not for me. I really didn't feel one way or the other when listening to it, and nothing stood out for me. It just felt a bit plain to me, I don't know why.

These Punk albums are having a good track record so far of being fun and having a selection of good but not great tracks. While I would say that sentiment extends to this album, I didn't enjoy it as much as some of our previous Punk albums and my favourite song from it was probably the track that feels the most distinct from the rest of the album (Maps). Instrumentals are perfectly serviceable but didn't really do anything to blow me away. The vocalist is good and the scratchiness to her voice at parts helps the music stand out, but on some songs like Tick it can be a bit much.

Mid 5/10 Fav tracks - Rich, Tick, Cold Light, Maps, Y Control Least Fav - The rest of them, but also none really

In my punk shit atm so that might play a part in my rating but i didn't mind this album ngl. But with that said it wasn't hitting as hard as other punk bands i listen to do. I can see why it is on this list, this feels experimental in a good way. 3/5

I liked it.

3.5 rounded down on paper this is like. exactly my thing, but unfortunately her vocals are super grating to me :-( highlights: maps, y control, modern romance (mar 23 2026)

Not great but not bad

tem uma música mt boa mas o resto é wtf

Once the screeching stopped the songs were actually alright.

The last 4-5 songs are really good but everything before that is pretty awful.

Pretty average noisy alternative punk. I thought the vocals were annoying at times, but the music wasn't bad. Thankfully the album was pretty short.

Good example of the garage rock sound comeback of the early 2000s. This album fits in nicely next to The White Stripes and The Strokes.

It was ok

I like it, but wouldn’t bump it on the day to day. Always fun to listen to the YYY’s

First time hearing and actually really got into it. Had energy and didn’t take itself too seriously. I could totally trace the sound back to The Stooges and Raw Power. I will definitely be listening to this again.

An album of two halves. The first half was very punk sounding, then the back half was a lot slower. I liked the second half a lot more.

Well, this was a lot of fun. Female fronted pop punk, with fuzzed out guitars and even more fuzzed out vocals, tracing a direct line from bands like the Pretenders and Siouxie and the Banshees. It’s not revolutionary or going to change the world in any way, but sometimes you just want something that hits all of the right notes without trying too hard. The highlight for me was the song No, No, No which is very appropriate for the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs.

oh yea let’s go crazy. nick zinner hometown hero SHARON MASSACHUSETTS REPRESENT!!!! i think it’s fun. overall i’d say it holds up a hell of a lot better than most of the shite from this so-called scene, in that it still sounds fresh (albeit a little samey when listened as one contiguous album) to me! is it the best record in the world? no. is “maps” the best song in the world? well now that just might be possible… fav tracks: maps [obviously]; y control; modern romance; poor song

that was good but I wasn't like blown away or anything. although that last song was KILLER so it's leaving me with a good taste in my mouth.

This list is hilariously 95-05 heavy

Good songs but her screeching is bad. If these songs had a different singer then it would have scored higher! Maps is a banger though, love that song 3 ⭐️

I preferred the second half of the album, which was a lot quieter.

Wasn’t sure what to expect hadn’t heard of the band before. The album was alright

I like the energy of this album. I just really don't like the tone or repetition. I get it Maps is good. It would be better with a bass

I low-key hated this but all of the singles are all-timers as far as aughts indie goes so there's that. 2.5/5

felt better in a cd player 6/10

Radio-friendly "safe" punk. A bit like the Hives but with more girlish squealing. Maps is a good tune.

put on my gym playlist

A good listen - very raw sounding

First half sucks

Angry No doubt.

This album grew on me. It’s not something that finds itself in heavy rotation, but I wouldn’t be upset if someone put it on.

Fun album, not bad

Didn't hate it

Don’t mind a good female fronted punk band, sussing out the wiki only got three members so that’s pretty impressive. I’m sure a lot of triple j bands take inspiration from this

This was just loud nonsense mixed into punk songs which are also nonsensical, this album left no impression on me except for the start of the last song which made me pitch a tent in my tracky dacks.

Yeah yeah nah, was alright but nothing making me come back, but her moaning making me cum 😩

maps is an all time classic

I like the music but sometimes the vocals are not my favour. favourite: "Maps", "Y Control" 2,5

Much more raw than I expected after hearing the last one with heads will roll. Reminded me of white stripes at times. I like this band. Glad to hear this.

why she sound like lana del rey. anyway maps is the only song id heard off this album and i kinda see why.

Somehow like the feverish hysteria displayed. That makes the partly dull lyrics and average songwriting bearable. It is more about display but craft, but it is a fun listen half time. Not a record to die for, but at least fun - which cannot be said of many of the weaker albums on the list.

This album was okay. Maps is a very good song, but what else?

Later zou natuurlijk nog Heads Will Roll volgen. Hoogtepunten van een band waar voor mijn gevoel meer in had gezeten. 7/10 Highlights Maps Y Control

Enjoyable album with some samey songs, but Maps stands head and shoulders above the rest

This is a band where before listening, I only knew the one hit, Maps. Decent enough song. Nothing else on the album really felt compelling, but also didn’t feel like I wanted to turn it off. A fine listen but won’t come back to it.

I remember listening to this a few times back when it came out during the big garage rock revival. My feeling at the time is that it was pretty good but nothing really sunk its hooks on to me beyond Maps. That one has been on my playlists ever since. Revisiting today, my feelings haven’t really changed. The album is decent enough and has some raucous fun moments but it never reaches the heights of Maps, although the run of Maps > Y Control > Modern Romance is probably the most interesting part of the album. I think this band is better when doing mid-tempo moody stuff. 3.5/5

I think this album was likely more interesting at the time of its release. Now it feels like being artsy for the sake of it. Kind of without purpose to me. All that being said, Maps is a brilliant song of the 00s.

You’ve heard of dance punk, get ready for dance riot grrl

I remember several friends were really into this band/album when it came out, and a few of the songs are vaguely familiar. But for reasons unknown it mustn’t have connected with me at the time. This time around, I really enjoyed it. The music and vocals are mostly manic in the first half of the album, but tone down in the second. The album flows really well. Highlights: Date With the Night, Man, Tick, Maps.

Another album slightly ruined by childhood experience. My mum would play this album on repeat while driving around so these songs are ingrained into my memory and as a kid, I fucking hated this band and this album. With a wildly different perspective as an adult now I still hate most of the songs on this album. The first half is borderline cringe with songs that are just too loud and fast with most of lyrics being either guttural noises or unintelligible. I counted 4 out of the 12 songs that I actually enjoyed and they were all in the slower paced second half. Not as bad as it was when I was a kid but still not my thing. 5/10

It wasn't bad, but other than maps, I just was okay with most of the songs.

It has character, but bit too same

I really liked ”Maps” when it came out and went to Best Buy to buy a CD to try and figure out what this whole post-Y2K indie scene was all about but ended up getting the “Garden State” soundtrack instead, which I think was the right choice. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a little more discordant than where my Goldilocks zone lies, but not too far outside of it. This is a pretty cool album and worth hearing.

Po pire

I don’t remember much.

Love maps and y control, excited to get into this whole album. I miss this era of music. Hm, I liked it less than I thought I would.

This album goes hard.

Enjoyed it!

Solid 3. Not groundbreaking by any means. Some highlights, but mostly filler.

Trends are always harder to place when you’re in them. Whether or not the Yeah Yeah Yeahs felt like part of a distinct musical movement in 2003 is difficult to say for someone who was busy playing with his dinosaur toys at the time. Interestingly, though, the term “indie sleaze” (nowadays very much associated with the band) is a uniquely retrospective coining, with online searches for the term beginning in 2021 and exploding in 2022. So however much I tried to resist this retrospective pigeon-holing, twenty years on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs feel inseparable from the garage-rock revival movement which is now under the indie-sleaze umbrella. They united with The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives, The Libertines and many more under a singular aim: “let’s make electric guitars cool again”. “Fever to Tell” perfectly fits this bill: from the first moment, Karen O is electric on vocals. She yelps, howls and snarls her way through each song, revelling in power and sexuality. The impassioned “choke” chorus of “Date with the Night”; the tormented, catatonic “tick tick tick” of, umm, “Tick”; the refreshing frankness of smash hit “Maps”. All around her, the two other musicians revel in raw, raunchy rock, with blues riffs and tremulous solos a-plenty. Just like the White Stripes, there’s no bass here: Nick Zinner layers up plenty of low-end guitars against Brian Chase’s raucous basement drums until the sound is well and truly full. There are plenty of songs I like here, but not many I really love. Most notable are those which dare to vary the driving garage rock rhythms: the heavy, hauling pulse in “Man”, the swaggering shuffle of “Cold Light”, the chugging, runaway momentum of “No No No”. I also enjoy “Pin”, which slyly weaves a bouncy, pop-fuelled chord progression around heavier riffs. And “Y Control” is tantamount to anthemic, with its sky-high searing guitars interrupted by rumbling storms of fuzz and a pounding, urgent lyric. It might just be my favourite on here. But much as I admire “Fever to Tell” for its riff-heavy attitude - and Karen O’s vocals especially - it doesn’t take long for the charm to wear off. Even when the album stands at a lean 37 minutes, it’s repeating quite a hefty chunk of the same stuff. A serious comedown also sets in at the end, with “Modern Romance” and hidden track “Poor Song” lumbering in as two whiplash inducing, low-energy dirges (I had to check whether they were bonus tracks). All in all, “Fever to Tell” doesn’t need to blow my mind to be good. And good it is.

fuck yeah

I thought I would love this more. Maps really makes this, huh?

Not for me

they did what they set out to do which is be edgy and annoying but Maps is a goddam gorgeous song and redeems the rest of it

I really wanted to love this album because I like their garage rock sound and the singer's style. However, there was more style than substance here and the songs didn't reach the standard I wanted. I also got quite tired after listening to the entire album in one sitting. Still kind of cool!

Music not bd - mix of rock and unbar and grunge. Karen O is the only reason to listen to this. There are some gems, (Modern Romance, Rich). Worth a listen m. A high 3+ or 4-

Pop punk but More punk than pop. Unfortunately, most of the album doesn't live up to the high point of Maps.

Yeah it realy didn't get to me

my favorite songs have an element of Velvet Underground to them, a sort of pared down repetitive thrum with Karen O's voice--this works. Most of the time, though, it doesn't really, not for me.

I like the strong guitar and beat. A bit punky, but good. I would almost put it in my rotation. First I've heard of them.

Fun! 3.5

Yeah yeah yeah, it was ok. Kind of reminded me of going to a late night bar with live music in Camden. No songs really stood out though, a little samey, but good background music.

pretty aight

There's a lot to like here. Unfortunately too explicit for my tastes so likely won't get a relisten

Really enjoyed the energy and overall vibe of this album.

Better than I was expecting based on what I had heard from them prior

Another entry into the genre of albums that I’ve owned for years but never managed to listen through all the way through until now. It’s first two songs are both pretty good, and the run of four songs from Maps to Poor Song are all great, but the middle of the album all rushes by without anything particularly memorable. I said in my Tea For Tillerman review that if I like half the songs on an album on a first listen, that’s an immediate five. I stand by that for that album, but it falls apart when half of the songs range pretty good to great, and the other half are all unmemorable it becomes much more of a mixed bag

I like the punk style. Didn't like the repetitive lyrics of every song.

Maps is 5/5. The rest is ok.

Half fun, half annoying. I already knew Maps which is the best track and sounds nothing like the rest of the album. Standout: Man, Maps

Interesting

classic Karen O. Love her, album has some great songs but many that i would skip on a regular listen

I know this album. Played it thoroughly through early 2000s. Great live act, lost their way later on.

Good album, probably a little higher than a 3. Has a little of The Moldy Peaches sound at times which isn’t a bad thing.

- workshop music for sure - the squealing is something that i think would be awesome live but I’m not sure I love for general listening - big fan of… i don’t know what the instrument is but it’s like. electric bell sounding. might just be the electric guitar and me being clueless. - spectacular guitar - spotify wouldn’t let me listen to modern romance for whatever reason - I liked it; I don’t know that I’ll definitely listen to it again but I do want to give it another try - 3/5

It's fine.

this was a bit more screamy and raw than i was expecting from this band. I really only knew their song Maps (shout out to Rock Band), and so the rest of their album was WAYYY different. I don't think its bad, but its probably not something i would listen to a ton afterwards. it was nice to hear Maps again for the first time in a long time, but thats probably where I would leave it

I didn't recognize any songs except for Maps; I like that song. It's funny how very catchy songs can have such sparse lyrics. This song has 1-3 sentences of meaning, depending on interpretation. I'm not really a punk listener. Maps is catchy. 3/5

Sounded SO similar to the White Stripes at the beginning and didn’t really feel like they came into their own until the last two songs. Still really good, of course.

Really good alternative type rock (it's kind of hard to describe). I enjoyed the album and had only heard one song from it before. The whole thing is pretty good and I will definitely listen to it again.

Not traditionally a massive fan of female lead shouty punk rock, via a vis this years BT festival but I recently got turned onto a later album by this band through a show on Netflix called Obituary. Which rather random stream of consciousness leads me to conclude that while it’s not particularly my cup of tea they are very good at what they do.

I’ve always liked these guys in terms of the general sound, it’s kinda archetypical New York cool garage punk adapted to a heavier stripped back sound of this era. However, they’re not great songwriters, I can only think of one or two bangers I really like and they’re not on this album. Classic style over substance really.

Love Karen O’s voice, love Maps and a couple other songs. Overall I’m not a huge fan of screamy music, but I appreciate this album.

Favorite track: Maps other pick: Man

Obviously the only song I was familiar with beforehand is Maps which I love and is still my favourite song on the album after listening to the whole thing. I also liked Black Tongue and Y Control as well, but didn't really care for the rest. Most of the other songs felt very noisy and not very sonically interesting. This would have been a 4 for me if it had just a couple more "good" songs, 3

Hm. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Otros discos de 2003: The Radio Dept- Lesser Matters, THE WHITE STRIPES - Elephant, JET - Get born, THE JAYHAWKS - Rainy day music, JOSH ROUSE - 1972 , Radiohead - Hail to the thief , Calexico – A Feast of Wire , Death Cab for Cutie- Transatlanticism, Songs: Ohia- Magnolia Electric Co, Ben Harper-Diamonds On the Inside, Black Bebel Motorcycle Club- Take Them On, On Your Own, The Stills-Logic Will Break Your Heart, MY MORNING JACKET-It Still Moves, THE SHINS-Chutes Too Narrow, THE RAPTURE -Echoes, RUFUS WAINWRIGHT -Want One, M83-Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, Broken Social Scene- You Forgot It in People, Outkast- Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, The Postal Service- Give Up, Broadcast-Haha Sound, The Essex Green-The Long Goodbye ... Debuts de Animal Collective, Arcade Fire (EP) , Shout Out Louds, The Raveonettes, The Thrills, Junior Senior, Scissor Sisters, Amy Winehouse... El curioso retorno de las Bangles (muy reivindicadas como influencia esos años), con un buen disco como Doll Revolution.

First half was a 2 second half was a 4

Takie w tle ale kilka razy się zawiesiłem. 3/5

Not a bad indie album, quite aggressive, unique vocally but not overly memorable and struggle to get into it a bit

Didn’t like this as much as It’s Blitz. Maps is great, none of the rest of the songs were familiar or grabbed me.

Maps is a classic. The rest I thought was just okay.

Quite the horny album. I mostly liked the rock instrumentals but some of the vocals were a bit annoying at times. Average overall, Maps is a banger though.

Great sound for a punk trio. Maps is a great song. The vocals were pretty annoying in some of these songs. I guess she's too punk for me.

Ok album. Each song was short and had a good tempo to it which made it an easy listen. Can't say it's one I'll be revisiting any time soon though

great album

This one is just ok for me. Not bad, not great.

Took a few listens; initially not mad on it except for Rich and Maps, which I know from the Guitar Hero games of old. I eventually came to appreciate the raw production and vibe, even if there is a heavy lean on the 'sleazy distorted vocals' thing. Favourite tracks: Rich, Date With The Night, Tick, Pin.

WAIT... THEY DON'T LOVE YOU LIKE I LOVE YOU. WAIT... THEY DON'T LOVE YOU LIKE I LOVE YOU. MAAAaaAAAaaaaaAAAaaaaAAAaaaAAAAPPSS WAIT... THEY DON'T LOVE YOU LIKE I LOVE YOU.

Reminds me of the White Stripes, but less Blues more "Punk". I guess these guys were a good live act. The singer sometimes sounds like PJ Harvey or Chrissie Hynde. The song "Y Control" has a post punk thing going on that makes it probably my favorite song on here. "Modern Romance" goes a little more minimal which I also like.

Super raw rock album

Sounds like a bit more punky version of The White Stripes, mixed in with some Tom Morello style riffs here and there. The guitar really is the standout on this album. The vocals bring it down a notch for me, as they just kind of grind on you with a voice that Hayley Williams clearly took inspiration from, but did much better. The lofi effect or whatever on the vocals also doesn’t help. The second half of the album was way better. Solid guitars, bad vocals, bad vocal production. 3.25/5

One of the best post punk/garage albums of the time. That whole revival movement based in indie sounds of the early 2000s doesn't sound very exciting in 2024 (including The Strokes, Interpol, The National and Arctic Monkeys), but the bangers are still the bangers. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as well as the mentioned bands, just know how to write great tunes. And out of those, I'd say Yeah Yeah Yeahs are rivaled only by Sleater-Kinney in terms of being the coolest, possibly the heaviest and most punk-adjacent major band. All the qualities I like. Fever to Tell ain't Turn on the Bright Lights, but it has withstood the test of time.

Another first time listen. I like the sound of these early 2000s thrashy punk albums. Perfectly good for a burst of energy whilst walking the dogs, but for me, nothing groundbreaking.

Probably 3.5 stars if I could choose.

maps is such an outlier song on this album

Cool, got samey

Not many thoughts on this album. Need more listens and then I could maybe love it but rn it's kinda ehh. I guess this is a canonical indi band pioneer? The intro to tick reminds me of a more recent pop song and I can't remember what it is is.

Enjoyed, but doesn't hold up as well as It's Blitz! 3.5 🌟

This was so so. I think it was standard Rock the lead was lots of yelling. But hey yeah yeah yeahs it’s in their name so. Favs: Black Tongue Pin Maps

fun album, not my favorite but really solid

Maps, the song that was kind of annoying to play in guitar hero. That's what this album makes me think of. I like the vibe of the album. Nice grunge rock feel. 3 stars for me

- Nochmal Yeah Yeah Yeahs war erstmal eine Überraschung - irgendwie haben die dieses freche , rotzige, was mir sehr gut gefällt - Viele coole Ideen dabei - It‘s Blitz fand ich aber insgesamt doch cooler Rating: 3,25/5

- Fand Its Blitz irgendwie cooler. 3,25/5

Bluesy distorted indie rock with neurotic vocals and pissy lyrics. Some tracks are pretty cool, but much of the album sounds the same, and the style wears out it’s welcome. However, “Maps” is a fantastic staple of 2000’s indie, and weirdly a big tone shift in the album, so I ended the listen with a favorable view. Stand out tracks include “Date With The Night”, “Black Tongue”, “No No No”, and “Maps”.

Nice rock but not very nice.

I liked it. Made me want to listen to more, so I checked out their next album 'Show your Bones'. May even listen to some others!

I have heard of the "Yeah Yeah Yeahs" but had not heard their music. I file this under the same category as the Vines, in that this music is of a certain early 2000's time where post-punk was the rage and bands were doing it well. This album seems to cross several musical categories for me, but I can't seem to grasp on to any of the songs. They don't compel me in the way I wish they would. Fine album and I put it in the same category as the Vines. Glad I listened, though I may not again until the songs speak to me more.

Was there ok, nothing extra

Maps is a great song. The rest of the album is alright. Not great, not terrible. Which makes it a 3.

not very interesting. modern romance was my favorite track. 6/10

lots of distorted guitar. Multiple guitars. Interesting and somewhat distinct sound with some punk and psychedelic and electronic dance sounds. Singer's voice sounds familiar but can't place it.

It was Ok

Okay. I like her voice, but mostly this is just rocky/punky noise.

High 3

The album is really quite funny. It was fun to listen to it. But it's not one of my favorites. 3/5

I've heard a few of the songs before and like them. The rest of album did not jump at me immediately, but has redeeming value that I will listen more.

so fun and inspired by many different things, i always like to come back to it once in a while.

Virkamiesrockia punkilla? Vaikea lokeroida mihinkään kategoriaan, eikä kyllä tarvitsekaan. Tämän pumpun engergia olisi hauska kokea livenä pikku kekkulissa.

Wait... They don't love you like I love you.

Maps tricks me into thinking it's a Florence + The Machine song every single time. That's indicative of it being good, as is the rest of the album - if not great.

What a debut album. Probably would get a higher score but I know it's a raw take of what they're capable of overall.

I like some of these songs...some are just...noisy.

Not bad. I've heard this band before and I liked them but this was my first time hearing this album. This one is a potential grower and I may have to check out the rest of their discography.

First listen I loved. Second listen seemed harder to listen to.

I feel about the same as I do about most other punk albums so far. It’s just ok. At least it was better than Germs. Not many standouts here either. 6/10 Top 3: 1. Rich 2. Maps 3. Black Tongue

I have two feelings about this album; I generally like it but the angsty lyric screaming over the top in places seems to be trying too hard (I liked the lead female vocals when more controlled). Reminds me of Scott Pilgrim movie, I saw a review say the early 00s EA Sports and that seems appropriate also. I enjoy ‘Maps’ and ‘Y Control’ the most, and they are at the end of the album, reminds me a bit of Paramore

Postpunk, indie, garage, mid/fast, female, kicks ass, high energy, but drums don't kick enough for me - solid, but not overwhelming

Another fun album! Listed as alternative but I’d almost call it punk. Either way, I know I’ve heard this band before I just can’t place is. The female voice is very familiar.

Here we go, actually our second from the band but it's their debut and the album with their big hit, "Maps." Totally forgot we had another album from them, but that's because it was forgettable. This one is not. "Maps" is a huge, monumental song, and there are some other heaters on here too. Really good album, especially as a debut. All the more reason to remove the other album we had from them. Favorite tracks: Maps, Rich, Man, Pin. Album art: Very, very cool artsy, punky style. Genuinely, the more I look at it the more I like it. Vibrant colors, perfect DIY style. In my humble opinion, and really as someone seeing this for the first time today, this could be an all-timer in its lane. 3.5/5

Half decent bit of noise here. Nothing revolutionary - at least, not looking from 20 years in the future anyway, but this is short, sweet and listenable. Vocals are pretty cool in particular.

Oh, yeah yeah yeah! Maps was my intro to these guys, and it completely captivated me. I love Karen's simultaneous intensity and minimalism. Admittedly, a lot of it can start to bore since there isn't necessarily a huge diff from one song to the next .... until she gets into Tick and channels Lena Lovitch, lol. Okay, so I like them at their low key best on songs like Maps & No No No, and more recent Heads Will Roll, but I think they're a fun buncha kids.

Date With The Night, and Maps are great tracks. The rest, while enjoyable, was not too memorable.

Sounds like the White Stripes

finde de schreimeitli shit no geil. date with the night het huere energie. Man au geil bluesy. Black Tongue isch seeehr geil. Y control sehr geile bass. ischs en bass?? modern romance isch huere schööön. poor song isch eig in modern romance drin gsi im original release? aber finds geil. git glaub entweder e starchs 3 oder es vieri.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are an interesting group. It looked like Karen O was primed to take the mantle that was developed by the riot grrrl movement, but after this album they started to go the more refined indie route rather than the garage punk status they had with their first couple albums. I do like some of the back-and-forth punkish sound and then softer sound with “Maps”. It reminds me a lot of The Breeders or Garbage. Overall unfortunately I think I prefer both Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ self-titled debut EP and their later album It’s Blitz to Fever to Tell. Fever is definitely an essential album for this list though.

Few alight tunes

Music was good but the lyrics ranged from alright to atrocious at times. Picked up in the second half but if I wanted to hear so much moaning I'd meet with Coilin's mother. 3 stars.

Actually not too bad, feels like the anarchist, punk culture in the UK. At some point, things got a bit too much, but overall - pretty cool.

Not my favourite of theirs but good.

This was actually pretty cool. Very 2003, guitar heavy and a bit inconsistent. Did Beyoncé sample Maps in Hold Up?

It's carried by maps

Not bad for an alternative garage band sound. The female lead is strong. I had never listened to this group before and I was pleasantly surprised.

I like it, but it's also not something that I would consider for a list like this. But I've felt that way about several albums so far. Maybe 1001 is too much, or I haven't grasped how much that amount would represent.

An interesting rock album. Very unique vocal performances. Songs sound very simple compared to rock music today, although still after of it's time. Could easily fit within the 2010s. "Maps" is totally overrated though.

It was ok. I recognized the one song maps, but wasn’t overly into the rest of the album. Mostly know the band from their Heads Will Roll that got remixed to death.

Raging hormones. Sexual nature. That's what I got from this album. Decent alternative/rock/indie/punk sound. That iconic lo-fi punk microphone vocals. Would see this in a 2000s high school movie. Maps and Y control are damm good. Modern romance has a surprisingly much chiller vibe. Don't enjoy the squealing though. Would give it a 3.5 if I could, because I enjoyed 3 songs, not really the album as a whole.

eig ganz cool, aber bissi anstrengend auf dauer

Its rock, OK, not great... 3 stars?

It was fine. I enjoyed the first two songs more than the rest - it just sounded like too much noise after a while.

Never heard this one before. It was good/interesting/something different.

💖 modern romance 🗣️ 7️⃣

This album makes me feel like I’m in a small club with a bunch of beefy sweaty white dudes banging our heads. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Again, singers voice isn’t my cup of tea but the guitar riffs are excellent and I’m humming along by the end of the song. Seems like it really wants to keep the grunge era alive but I don’t think this could save it. Key tracks: Rich, Date with the night, maps

I probably would have really loved this 30 or 40 years ago.

"No No No" says it all.

One of those albums that I wish I liked, I just don't really. Kind of hurts my ears a bit. Incredibly talented band but just not for me. Couple good tracks. Maps of course and Poor Song.

No no no

This album was good. I liked the second half more than the first. Lots of energy here. Favorite songs are Rich, Black Tongue, No No No, and Maps

yeah yeah yeah / yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

wow. this was.... maybe i'm tired. maybe it's something else but i did not... feel this album. as much as i should. the scratchy vocals, the distorted guitars... this is a certain level of the genre that unfortunately i just don't understand fully. i wish i could tell you further than that, it's just not for me at all. is this a good album? i would say that yes, it is. it just has a sound that i personally do not care for. if you like artsy indie tracks with a deep grimy sound, you'll be a fan!

I like this well enough. It’s mostly good. There was a time when I loved this indie alt sound, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were everywhere when I was going to concerts and festivals like mad. I probably would have listened to it in my regular rotation for a few years and eventually forgotten it as my life moved on. Except for Maps. That song is iconic to me. Even before my friends and I banged it out on Rock Band, Maps was an earworm that had stuck with me. Maps keeps me revisiting this album every so often, even though nothing else grabs me quite the same way.

Had some good parts but I’m personally not a fan of a singing pterodactyl - 3/5

Definitely a unique sound all around, the vocals are probably the most memorable part. Enjoyed the second half of the album a bit more.

Rich - 7/10 Date with The Night - 7.5/10 Man - 8/10 Tick - 7.5/10 Black Tongue - 8/10 Pin - 7.5/10 Cold Light - 7/10 No No No - 8.5/10 Maps - 8.5/10 Y Control - 8/10 Modern Romance - 8/10 Poor Song - 7.5/10 TOTAL - 93/120

Got better with multiple listens, but still mostly prefer the singles I'd already heard.

Karen O is so cool, but I feel like her voice is not complimented by the band. Like there both good, but the sound is conflicting. I really want to love it, but it just feels like it is not quite punk enough and thus turns into a dated 2000s sound

Oh no, another that I thought was modern but is 20 years old! 😮 Defo 2000s indie vibes though

TONS of energy, complex arrangements, very listenable singer. This kind of modern rock isn't a go to for me, but you can hear the care and imagination in the production.

Highlights: Date With The Night, Black Tongue, No No No, Y Control. In a nutshell: meet me in the bathroom. For context, this album was released in the same month as "Elephant" by The White Stripes. It's difficult to not compare Jack and Meg White with Karen O, Nick Zenner and Brian Chase- two garage rock revivalists blazing their own trails, two albums that sound similar and slightly different. IMHO, ending the album with 'Y Control' or 'Poor Song' (forgo Modern Romance or relegate it to a hidden track) would be the better choice. I have a soft spot for the band's follow up album "Show Your Bones", so this may be skewing my opinion. Highly recommend watching the book and documentary meet Me In The Bathroom which chronicles NYC bands like The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Strokes, etc who cut their teeth in the early 2000’s. Overall 6/10

I like her voice.

Decisive sound; love the energy, not so much the edgy-ness. Engaging listen all the way through.

pretty good tbh

Solid album. Who doesn’t love Maps

Solid album Chow chow chow chow chow chow chow

Definitely not something I listen to every day, but this was still alright. I don't think I will revisit it, but it was still interesting to hear! I think perhaps the mixing could've been a bit better, everything melds together a bit too much and becomes a bit too high frequency. Especially with that very specific "old microphone" and delay effect on the singer which ends up in about the same frequency spectrum as the hi hats and distortion.

I listened to it at first listen but I didn't like it and I stopped, after a while, I remote it and I liked it enough to finish it. I see that many people didn't like it, for my part I think it's a good indie punk rock album. This album has a lot of energy, which is perfect for some social environments (like skateboarding with your friends). The bad thing is like I said, there are certain things like for example some songs like Rich or Black Tongue can alienate certain people because of their lyrics or aspects for a natural punk listener. The best songs for me were Maps, Date With The Night, Man and Modern Romance. In conclusion: Fever to Tell seems to me a decent album.

I thought this was pretty good but don't think it necessitated 90 minutes of listening. My wife, however, did not like it. But then, she married me so we know her judgment is questionable and we can ignore her opinion (Don't tell her I wrote this review. The woman is a saint). Yes, dear. Coming, be right there...

Shouldn’t a band with such a great name be just a little bit better? This was way, way overhyped and an abject lesson in what you get when you mix glam and punk, which is glunk. One gets it’s meant to be visceral and in one’s face, with guitars that alternately searing, piercing and crunching and the yelping vocal style. A few songs are winners but the vast majority of the rest sounds like noisy posturing of the art-school-project variety – "hey look at us; isnt it cool we started a loud, slightly discordant indie band?" The repetitive "Pin" is exhibit A. It all adds up to less than sum of its parts. Later records got a bit better, but my initial reactions to this when it came out (meh overall and totally overrated) still seems on track. The amount of time the editors spend talking about Karen O’s clothes and the cover art are a clue to the lack of substance here. In the end, this is a lot of noise that doesn’t amount to much (other than “Maps” which is great and “Y Control” which is considerably above average).

Some good well known songs but the rest are ok

Interesting album that I had never heard before.

I feel like I would enjoy this live, but at 10 am, by myself, drinking coffee, I didn't really appreciate listening to that girl simulate an orgasm so much.

Wouldn't really listen regularly but enjoyable enough

Great album!! Awesome hooks

Eh, everything sounds kind of the same. Not a fan. I did actually like Maps and it was the one song that really sounded unique.

Monday 10/30/2023, 1:30, office S Tier————————— Maps A Tier————————— Date with the Night Cold Light Pin B Tier————————— No No No Black Tongue Rich Y Control C Tier————————— Yeah! New York Tick Man

It's good, not great, not awful, just good.

Good energy and variation.

I like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs a lot. I generally prefer their later albums, but this one is good too. Plus "Maps" is an all time classic song for my generation.

They are good, but not my favorite.

Maps is a great song, as is Y Control. Otherwise, an unremarkable album. Might take songs from this to add to a playlist, but when listening to the whole album cohesively, the songs don't stand out from one another and it all blurs into one. It does turn this around a little towards the end.

Pretty decent rock album, like the lead singers voice

Not my cup of tea. Pretty raw sounding, felt like I was listening to a local band live somewhere. Didn’t really enjoy the vocals. I gave it a second listen and preferred it the second time around but still not really my thing. Favourite track: Maps.

Fine-crazy that maps is on this given how different the rest of the album is-would’ve been fun to see at Coachella 3/5

Ok this has aged pretty well as that NY millenial movement - better than The Strokes that's for sure. A slight monotony does set in, but its short and sharp and does not outstay its welcome.

En plein mon style. Not much wow but nicceee. S'écoute bien et j'aime le style.

There's a good sound buried in here that gets caught up in the punk aesthetic. Standouts include Rich, Date With The Night, Maps, and Yeah! New York.

Un disco muy sincero. Me gusto. Nada mas que decir.

Wasn’t really my jam.

There's basically two sounds on this album: Dirty punk songs with fast staccato riffs and fuzzy guitars over snare-banging drums & spacey indie rock with a more melodic lead guitar sound with big reverby toms-banging drums. The vocals are in a high register, alternately yelping and nearly operatic. They were always an ambiently around band listening to indie rock in college but never gave them much of a close listen and I actually though Maps was a Broken Social Scene song for years - that is the standout track on this album, both in terms of quality and aesthetics - it's much gentler, more atmospheric, and anthemic than the rest of the songs, which are tend towards the punk end of the spectrum.

Great sound, but not sure two Yesh Yeah Yeahs albums need to be in my 1001!

Didn’t love it didn’t hate it

This album is very disappointing. Other than Maps and Y Control, I didn't like a single song. They weren't terrible, just undercooked white stripe style jam.

It was ok. I didn't hear any songs I would put om my playlist.

i liked this crazy, noisy instrumentation on this album a lot, and even some of the melodies. Maps is obviously a banger. However some of the vocalizations were just insufferable, which made some of the tracks unlistenable. I am not a huge fan of the really guttural punk screams. Very similar to how i feel about talking heads.

Typical punk rock band: throbbing, driving music. Doesn’t try to stray too far from middle of the road. Very good vocals: doesn’t try to strain voice.

I liked this one, Maps is obviously the standout song.

It was ok - not my first choice of music but not too jarring. The voice of PJ Harvey with a White-Stripes-Esque backing track.

i like it a lot. but couldn’t really differentiate a lot of the songs (besides maps literally 10/10 jam). so gets a 3 but could have pushed for a 4 if i feeling generous

Stable alt rock! But it never goes "wow" for me

yeah (x3). this fucking rips. best part is the album sequencing. best tracks: date with the night, maps, rich

3.5 This came out when I was in a band, and very much making the scene. Which is appropriate because the bands of this time were very much scene bands. Debauched Indie primitivism, like a less rootsy white stripes. The amps sound explosive, and the buzz saw riffs serve their purpose if break no new ground. Perhaps the most innovative thing from the guitars is the rhythmic use of harmonics. A lot of cross pollenation between these guys the strokes interpol and white stripes. Although I suspect that the white stripes were more copied than copiers. Karen o has a direct edgy, delivery. Not a lot of tenderness or range. In maps we get as close to that as she gets. But that’s ok, the bluster and the cocky swagger is kind of what we’re here for. A bit different in that the dumb bluster and raw sexuality is being delivered by a front woman rather than man. Cool?

The first and last thing you notice is the vocals. They go from being harsh one second to smooth the next. Without Karen O there is no Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I think mileage may vary in this one. Musically I think the band provides good support to Karen O. The pace is frantic and hits hard.

- Rich: Pretty cool song, I really love that intro riff. - Date With The Night: I think this would go a lot harder if I wasn't in the middle of a workday. It's a very specific chaotic vibe that I don't often embody. - Man: this song goes so hard I love the hard rock vibes plus the effects craziness - Tick: I think Karen O's vocals can be a bit much for me at times. Not disrespecting Ms. O but I think it's not in my Q zone. It's fun to listen to but it's definitely a lot. - Black Tongue: Pretty cool punky song, nothing much else to say about this one. - Pin: Not gonna lie no idea what she's talking about but it sounds cool. - Cold Light: Another one where I would love this in an Underground Arts kinda environment but listening in my bedroom during a workday doesn't produce the same vibes. - No No No: Easily my favorite song title on the album. I also really like the song, the part when it kicks into the heavy hits with the distortion on and it does that cool Black Sabbath breakdown thing goes so hard. - Maps: Not a bad song but doesn't go as hard as some of the other ones. - Y Control: I love the spacy guitar part. It kinda got repetitive at the end but overall good song. - Modern Romance: I feel like this is a good meditation song it's very droney and simple but pretty melodies. - Poor Song: Nice slow song to close out the album, I think it's a bit too slow for my current vibe but it's got some decent stuff going on.

Kivaa jytää, mut jää hieman keskiverroksi omaan makuun.

Nice and energetic, the singer voice was pretty made it all come together.

Karen O doesn't sing, she yelps and shouts and screams, sometimes with good effect, but mostly in a non-meaningful and showy fashion. Did one mention fashion? One doesn't require that musicians and recording artists to be in any way fashionable; the editors overemphasis of KO's style suggests misplaced priorites – who cares about her haircuts or which designers' clothes she wears. Later records got better, but this isn't really too far above average. There are a handful of solid or better cuts – "Y Control," "Maps," "Modern Romance" – but most of the rest is filler, your basic loud, bangy, yelpy, showoffy, posturing and overly performative filler that, though it undeniably represented a state-of-the-art hipsterism at the turn of the millennia, remains filler all the same.

Interesting indie/although rock from the early 2000s. Sort of punk, the lead singer has a good voice for the genre. I've heard Maps before, I thought it was an alright song. There were better songs on the album though nothing really stood out, it all kind of blended together. Overall a decent album.

Very particular female alt/post-punk kinda vocal styling on this that I'm not a huge fan of. Though that's strictly a preference thing: solid artistry all around.

I like it, I don't love it. But better than I remember.

Yeah yeah almost. 1 or 2 good songs - prefer other albums

I did a double take when I saw the release date for this album. I didn’t realize the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were around since the early 2000s. I was familiar with the song Maps from this album and with a handful of their more recent songs. Karen O has a cool voice and style, but a whole album is a lot. If you enjoyed this band and didn’t already know, check out their song with Perfume Genius. It’s called ‘spitting off the edge of the world’ and it’s really good.

I loved their debut EP, but when this came out, I felt like it didn't quite fulfill their potential. And I still feel that way (though in hindsight, their debut isn't quite as strong as I originally thought it was). This album has energy for days, and it's a lot of fun. I dig them as a band. Their music is great for shuffles and for soundtracks. I can't imagine being lucky enough to have Karen O as a singer. Then again, she, like Johnny Rotten and Perry Farrell, is so iconic and wild and punk and powerful that she totally overwhelms everyone around her. It's almost more of a sound effect than a voice. And that's great as long as the material is there, which in this case it sometimes is (Maps, especially). But on the whole, I feel like these are memes more than songs. God bless 'em, though. Some bands are albums bands and some are singles bands, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a fantastic singles band. One song is all it takes to have you pounding on your steering wheel, ready to conquer the grocery store. Charge!

Didn’t hate this but also didn’t love it. Hole came on auto play right after this album and I thought I’d these bands are the same genre, I’ll stick with Hole. Glad I had a listen because this was one of those bands I’d heard so much about but yet didn’t know anything

This album sounds like the love child of The Hives and Metric, two bands I really like. I feel like I SHOULD like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but I don't and I don't know why.

I have this cd but hadn’t played it for a long time. It’s a good listen. I enjoyed the first half of the album, with 5 songs of 2&1/2 minutes or less. (I’m) Rich reminds me of Iggy’s I’m Bored. Date With The Night is strong & her vocals remind me very much of Shirley Manson. Man (where the album title comes from) & Tick both work for me, both being under 2 minutes. Not so thrilled with the rest, either too long or just a bit pointless - except for Maps, which I think is outstanding. The band stars on this - Zinner’s guitar & Chase’s drums are great. I never saw the band, as such, but I did see Karen O (Stop The Virgens{sic}) - A Psycho Opera at the Sydney Opera House, as part of the 2012 Vivid Festival. And both Zinner & Chase (& Money Mark) were in the band that night. Don’t know what it was all about but it was entertaining. I think I prefer The Strokes from this period of the edgy New York scene. But each time I do listen to this now, I like it more.

I've been meaning to read Lizzy Goodman's 'Meet Me in the Bathroom', her well regarded oral history of the NYC rock and roll scene in the early 2000s. It covers the much hyped scene that included the Strokes, Yeah Yeahs Yeahs, Interpol, LCD Sound System, etc. But I haven't got around to reading it yet. Part of my tardiness has been a general antipathy towards many of those bands as over-hyped, style-over-substance poseurs. The Strokes were especially too-cool-for-school, louche, rich kids showing off for the cameras, more interested in doing drugs and shagging models than actually rocking out. I never really bought their 'saviours of rock and roll' posturing. I probably lumped the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in with that whole crew, and had not really given them a proper listen. They were, in fairness, massively hyped on the basis of one ep (which was pretty good) and a single (which was OK) before they even put an album out. Lots of press and photo shoots for a band that is barely out of the practice room never bodes well for the longevity of a band. This album was met with some of the inevitable skepticism and backlash that follows that kind of hype. The NME was certainly responsible for the early crash and burn of many a young hopeful in the UK, and the same trend seemed to be occurring in this New York scene. But it's 15 years later now, and now that the dust has settled, how does this album strike me? Well, it rocks. The guitar and drums cut loose, and the playing is noisy and dynamic (which is to my taste). Karen O is a charismatic and compelling front person. She tends towards louche restraint on occasion, as was endemic in that scene (Julian Casablancas is the worst fucking offender at that), but she is usually energetic and compelling. after three listens, there were some songs that caught my attention and memory. Of the albums from this particular scene that I have heard, this is my favourite so far, even if not wildly different from a bunch of local bands I have heard tearing it up at my local small venue. Maybe that's what I find so off-putting about the hype thing. I have seen bands as good as this at the Sandringham or Moshpit or the Burland Community Centre or in a fucking laneway in Marrickville, that might release a demo tape as good as this, but nobody has ever heard of them. I love this kind of band, playing as if their lives depend on it in a sweaty pub in front of 30 people. It's real, it's special, it's right in front of you. It's loud, close-up, gritty rock and roll. But will it save the world? Is it the greatest thing ever? It's the greatest thing right there in the moment for those 30 people, but it's an ephemeral thing. And that's its beauty. I bet I would have LOVED the Yeah Yeah Yeahs if I has seen them as unknowns in a small bar. But as a worldwide musical phenomena? It's not the right context for what they are doing. But I will acknowledge that The Yeah Yeah Yeahs is a fucking great band name.

Some slightly annoying jangly moments, but overall pretty enjoyable. Maps is a great track

Not bad, strong vocals supported by muscular riffing, reminiscent of Jeff Buckley in parts. Didn't make me want to listen more than once though

Didn’t take to it but it got me listening to Germ Free Adolescent by X Ray Spex. A fantastic album with the same indie post punk sound but with a UK bent

Good album, liked it didn’t love it. Listened twice, probably won’t listen again.

Surprisingly not that bad! I won't return to it, but I didn't dislike it.

Energetic and raw garage rock. Great album, but can't really say more about it.

There's an almost punk attitude to their first album. Enjoyable, although it didn't grab me for relistens. Some of their tracks sit in the back of my head, but this album I'm just reminded of an energy.

Karen O is one of my favourite female vocalists and there's no doubt who's the focus of this Garage/Punk, Art/Punk band. Her voice is so raw, sexy and vulnerable at the same time. Spin calls her "Iggy Pop for shy nerds who want to get loose" Its also impressive that she only has two band members behind her especially Nick Zinner on guitar/keyboards because he produces a veritable wall of sound with his loops. I do prefer their more melodic tunes though so naturally Maps is my favourite tune here (check out their video of this song on Youtube, it gives me goosebumps when she cries real tears). In fact Pitchfork calls Maps the 6th Greatest Song of the Decade and Rolling Stone calls it "the 6th greatest song of the Century". Y Control is also very good.

Get up and go album but with some surprisingly tender moments. Good to relisten after such a long time 7/10

This is a good record but not a great one. In Maps the band did have a classic single which made people sit up and take notice. They will go on to better things.

Not my jam. Though, worth listening to.

Punky. Made me wanna fight a child at walmart

Interesting sound on this one, lead girl's vocals were a little crazy at times, but not really in a bad way. Music style reminded me of White Stripes sometimes, I wonder if they were inspired. Pretty good rock album

I really wanted to give this album at least 4 but I truly think it does not deserve more than 3. There are not enough good moments to rate this album higher. Maybe I would rate it higher couple years ago, maybe 10 years later I would enjoy it more. Nowadays there are many better indie post punk albums that I would rather listen. This one was close but not close enough.

This is a big and noisy record, with plenty of punky, chaotic energy. It sounds quite rough around the edges, and in production, but I think that works in its favour. I like Karen O and the anarchic energy she brings to it. There's a lot of hits, but also a lot of weird tracks that you need to tune into to really appreciate I think. For me I tended to like the singles on the album, and found a lot of the rest a bit hard to get into. Best tracks: Date with the Night, Pin, Maps, Y Control.

Garage rock isn’t a genre I’m too keen on. I love rock, I love punk, I just don’t like it too noisy or too DIY. Going into this one, I did think the band itself was quite interesting. Musically wise it’s pretty great, it’s just the vocals I’m not into at all. And the record went on a bit too long 6 out of 10

I was really glad to see this one come up. I love Karen O. so much. I think they're a pretty good band I don't love father songs but the ones I do I really do love quite a lot.

A few good songs

Ah, a fine album with high points (Maps and Y Control are absolute bangers) otherwise faintly nostalgic noughties indie pop with a charismatic frontwoman and a fairly normal backing band.

Leuk, prima album. Had ze nog nooit echt geluisterd vind dit een aardige introductie

Ohhh, I remember this album. I haven't listened to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in so long. A lot of bangers on this album. Date With The Night is baller. I like Tick and Pin too. Remember listening to a lot of Black Tongue, back in the day. Maps brings back a lot of memories.

Would be open to listening to more by them

seksi heh (ei silti harmita kuunnella kolmoa löröttää)

Love the attitude and vocals, but in moderation.

High-School guitar based shouting rock with a twist (Twist being female singer and a touch of pling plong)

Better than I expected, some interesting parts and I might check out more from them

It's harder than their new stuff, I didn't love them at the time and think that's probably about right. They're ok, probably pretty good live.

ouais ouais ouais

Maps remains unassailable, but I had forgotten about how... mediocre I feel about the first half or the record. Its best moments are concentrated at the end. 3/5

It’s good, it’s not great but it’s good. It’s sort of vague indie rock but the lead singer does have some pipes. It’ll absolutely blow some people’s socks off I’m sure, but not mine. Average as average can be for me.
