Reviews (page 9 of 13)
As far as repetitive music goes, this is definitely not one of the worst example, but it's also no the best. They stick to a formula that works well enough but doesn't produce anything particularly special. A couple of songs stand out (Smack My Bitch Up, Breathe, Firestarter, and Fuel My Fire), and the rest are still pretty fun but not that memorable. 7/10
It’s fun, but outstays its welcome after the first few songs.
A fun British trip hop Edm record. Lot's of breakbeats, balls to the wall levels of energy, and great production. A fun listen, but time will tell if I'll be back.
pretty nice album, didnt think id find an actual good electronic album i cant lie
Recognizable sound that without a doubt has influenced others up to today's electronic music scene the album is a fun energized ride. The vocal contributions to some of the songs I actually think detract from the sound as they come off a bit corny or just not good. Overall a very 90s/early 2000s sound best paired with drugs but the highlights like "breathe", "minefield", and "firestarter" make it a fun listen on any day. 3.5🌟
3.5 Another British house album, but at least this is one of the really good ones. Again, not much to add. It’s what the late 90s felt like. Matrix. Blade. Toonami bumpers. Somehow it was always music like this scoring those.
Nice blast from my past. I still have no idea what they’re singing about. 3/5
Sick album cover and I enjoyed the music for its genre
Thumping good album.
Meh
Great club anthems, but with a few low points.
I mean..... it was nice to send emails to

I did not use a private session on Spotify for this one. I had the sensibility to not listen it for the first thing in on a Monday morning. This albums has some classics and is great for what is, electronic music. Not a huge fan of electronic music, though.
The Good: Prodigy The Bad: Not reserved for talent… The Ugly: Fat land… bad for your arteries… What? Firestarter? Breath? Anyone who was old enough to drink in the ‘90s knows those songs. I can understand that the album is on the list, as this band was everywhere (at least where I lived at the time) and infectious in it’s upbeat hooks. Yet, we are a couple of decades later, and it just starts to rub the wrong way… EDM is like rap, for me, I can stand it for a little while, but then I need to flip the switch… Just because of the couple of massive songs that are on this album it deserves more than the 3* I am going to dish out… that, and the album cover rocks!
Just revved up the list again and got a mid British album, we’re so back (2.5/5)
a fuckin JAM - not going to listen to it all the time but great Electronica.
Rave it up, quite heavy
A few of these songs are great, and fun additions to playlists. I don't see me ever going back and listening to the whole album again though.
Rating: 3.5/5 | Favorite Track: Firestarter --- Enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would. There are certainly some excellent standout tracks, but the album gets a little too repetitive for me to rate this any higher.
It's was okeedokee.
As a type of music, this is a great example album and worth listening too. It has a significant amount of energy, but the lyrics are all rather throw-away, and the constant repetitiousness of each song definitely degrades it. Songs like "Smack my bitch" pick up on the not uncommon theme of violence and misogyny in various genres of music. Why you would want to dance to that, I do not know. Should you listen to it? Yeah, sure, at least once to get an understanding of what is a highly active genre of music.
This album is kind of harsh on the ears at points, but it also has a lot of great energy to it. Favorite Track: Narayan
Interesting hip hop/electronic mix
of course I knew the singles, and they are killers. But the whole album is good! Some songs could be a minute or 2 shorter, but still. I liked it a lot. Reminded me of staying up late and watching MTVs AMP.
Better than I remember.
As far as EDM goes, this mix of punk-funk is much better to listen to. I wouldn't say that it would make my playlist very often. Oddly enough, "Smack My Bitch Up" is one of my least favorite tracks on this. "Breathe" is my favorite track.
This album feels like the soundtrack to an early 2000s PS2 dirtbike/quad/waverunner game. And I'm here for it. Nothing that wowed me, but great background tunes.
I actually liked this better than I expected. There's tons of energy and some songs, especially Climbatize, I do like. Oddly enough it's the hits that I really can't stand. What I absolutely loathe about this album is the 'singing', shouting, vocal horror-thingy.
If I hadn't listened to these songs when I was younger, I don't think that I would really find them too exciting nowadays, but I have jammed to a few of the songs from this album and they seem to be the most popular ones anyway. The rest are a bit obscure and not really too great but it's overall noot too bad of an album, although a normal person would think that this music is crazy.
Heard it before. Party music. The random L7 cover at the end has always been really fascinating to me 3/5
Super
Some good songs, not super for me. maybe if i listen to it more ill like it better
A lot less crazy sounding than I thought it would be, but still pretty good! I feel like I'm already burned out the singles since Firestarter and Smack my Bitch Up don't sound nearly as cool as they did when I first heard them but the album has wayyy more to offer in the way of interesting beats and cool instrumentals than I figured it would, but then again big beat and other mid 90s british electronic music click with me in a way most others don't
Finally an electronic album I've heard before. I'm not saying I love this album, but I finally am assigned one that I understand why it's included on this list. This album was everywhere in the late 90s, and back then MTV was still relevant, and you would see prodigy videos on it pretty regularly. My feelings on this album are somewhat mixed. A few songs are very good, straight up bangers. A few are practically unlistenable because of how annoying they are. The rest are just sort of mid. But it's no doubt this is an EDM album that you should hear. 3.5 stars
Flowed nicely, annoying at times, some iconic bangers
Joa, ist okay für so alte Electro Musik
There's a reason why The Prodigy were allowed to grace the stage at festivals like Download and Sonisphere. This album is a world where dance and metal collide and metalheads took this band in and claimed them as their own. You can see why, it's very heavy dance music in places. There are some cracking tracks here. The three singles 'Firestarter', 'Breathe' and 'Smack My Bitch Up' are easily the strongest ones. The latter in particular is my favourite. It's got a really cool groove and the wailing by whoever the female vocalist is is a cool highlight. Of the other tracks that I'd never heard, 'Climbatize' was really cool. It stood out because it was almost chilled out despite the heavy drums which were prominent throughout the album. It's got a cool melodic hook to it and had an almost Middle Eastern flavour. 'Mindfields' was a cool, Asian inspired almost psychedelic track. Closer 'Fuel My Fire' was also good with its infectious groove and foot tapping beat. I will say that it's slightly one note overall so you have to really be in the mood for it. The tracks really could have done with being a minute or two shorter as well. I don't know how much fat is in this land, but it could have done with being trimmed. I can see why it's a classic and I can see why people love it. I would say I liked it, I enjoyed it but I wasn't blown away. Would have been a four if they cut the runtime down by ten minutes.
When it hits… it hits but a lot of the songs similar. I dig the formula but it starts to wear on you.
I’m a little busy doing (another) Talk Talk discography marathon right now but after reading the wiki I am so hyped for this album. Ok that was not bad
se la prima canzone non si chiamasse lett “smack my bitch up” gli avrei dato una stellina in più
5/10
I dunno. It was enjoyable enough while it was on, but it’s just not a style I’ve ever been attracted to. I guess unless there’s really good rapping over top or something. Just very aggressive. Personally wouldn’t call it a must listen but I bet a lot of people love this.
La misma canción una y otra vez, bastante potente eso sí
2.5
Was good to reminisce on this one. Used to love it a lot. As time passes the album has kind of faded on me though. It was not as great as I remember it being, but still good.
Not bad, good background.
ajopelimusiikkia
Crazy stuff from the far off land of 1997. Not my typical beat but The Prodigy has a place in my heart, even if I’ve maybe aged out of it. Time is a flat circle, after all.
This album seemed to inspire a many film scores with intense action scenes from the early 2000s. I do mean that in the best way possible. It has a relentless intensity that I can manage in small doses. Each song here is enjoyable and interesting on its own. But all together, I just get a little tired by the end.
Lieder sind lang, war aber trotzdem ganz nett und gut als Hintergrund
3.5/5
Sounds like a 90s action movie. Can see how it was very influential. Hi energy song. Didn’t really like the album when it came out. Feel OK about it now I wouldn’t want to listen to it every day.
"The Fat Of The Land" may not be the best album of its kind, but it still has its value. Its instrumentals have deep layers that sometimes hinder the listener's experience. But it is still an interesting album to listen to because its production is refined for its time. It ends up walking a fine line between acceptable and incomprehensible.
Standouts: • Smack My Bitch Up • Diesel Power • Serial Thrilla • Firestarter
It's fantastic for me that this album came up today. You see, I'm working on a screenplay for an action movie. In the film, there's a scene where the protagonist has to investigate some mystery that's led him to a dance club. One of the bad guy's owns the club, and there's gonna be a big shootout. The club is filled with people who are dressed in comical amounts of leather and whose dancing style can only be described as writithing. When the shooting begins, the music is so loud that the idiots dancing don't even know that they're in danger. I think any one of the songs from this album would work perfectly for this scene (it's worked well for every other late 90's film that follows this cliche).
1/2
I disliked this less than I anticipated. (23 known/44 new)
Drum and bass is a bit of a weird genre for me. I do enjoy a decent amount of tracks, but I always find a full album to be a bit of a grind. I left the room to make a drink while this album was on, and I truly don’t know if it was the same track playing or not when I came back in, as they all sound a bit the same. As a whole, I would say I enjoyed this album, but any track could be enjoyed much more by listening to it in isolation. That said, I know that this album is very loved, so I’m expecting some disagreements on this review!
i had fun with it!
The emphasis on the music made this an interesting album
i mess with this
cool
Blander industriel rock og electronic som nogle af de første. Nuff Said det er rigtig fint.
Famous ones are BANGERS, others are alright. Breathe and Fuel My Fire are good. Love the Who sample in Climbatize!
good album, added most of the songs to a workout playlist. Great rhytms.
This sounds like a stereotypical electronic album for the 90s at first. Mindfield was enjoyable, and I like the notes of rap/hip hop throughout the album. Overall, I did like it although it had a rough start.
THIS IS 1997 🔥🔥🔥
Great album. But holy shit, if you’re already stressed about something this will crank it up. 😆
sort of industrial ambient sound, good for background music while working
These songs are literal earworms. Doesn't matter how basic or repetitive they are, they're super catchy. There's a lot of heat at the beginning, but the levels do get a bit worse as the album goes on. I also have some bias towards this album, because some of the British YouTubers I'd watch growing up would have some of these songs as background music. All bias aside though, this album is just super fun. Solid 3.25 Favorite Songs: Breathe, Diesel Power Least Favorite: Fuel My Fire
funky, going with a 3 for now because there were some misses and i don’t think i’ll be returning to it much but good listen! crab rave
I always liked their impact, attitude and energy. Firestarter is great but Breathe is my favourite. I bet they were cool live but somehow a full album dilutes their impact for me, it got a bit repetitive. So sad what happened with Keith Flint, who it seems was a kind and gentle soul.
Went from 1 to probably 3.5ish. It's like I've just left a FIFA menu screen open for an hour. Actually pretty good for work background - there's a chaos to it, but it's driving not distracting. I don't think I want to put it on 'just to listen to' though. I don't need to be in a Mission Impossible movie soundtrack.
Much more enjoyable than I expected. I hated them back in the day and in this case my view has softened with time.

Solid vibe
Not as good as in remember.
It's dated in many places, but it's still a jam
Nem hallgatnám
We rocked so hard in the 90’s that we had to have actual sword fights going on in our techno songs just to feel something. Over forty fully trained adult ninjas died to make “Breathe”. And it was worth it.
Classic 90s rave send up. Classic tracks "Smack My Bitch Up" and "Firestarter". It can be a little one-note and repetitive, but that's kind of the point.
yea.
Pretty good stuff. I recall thinking of this kind of electro-rock music as very extreme when I was in my teens, but today it’s quite listenable & enjoyable.
A few good “hits”, but as a whole this album has not aged well.
I remember the Smack My bitch Up video...that took a surprising turn. I was already a fan of Breathe and Firestarter, but the rest of the album didn't hold up as much. It felt like a watered-down version of those top three songs.
I love the energy but most of the songs are too long and repetitive for me. Breathe and Smack My Bitch Up are both great tracks though.
There was something cool going on in every song. Too unrelenting for my non-rave lifestyle.
This album has some hits with Breathe and Firestarter but it doesn't hit as well as Music for the Jilted Generation. The Prodigy are such a band of their time and the sound screams 90s. These two are good to have on the list but I doubt we need more Prodigy than that here.
Good for playing any racing game to. Ah Firestarter is a fun one. They have the ability to construct a decent song. They were probably one of the best at doing this when the people wanted this. They could trim the fat on a couple of these tracks. The second Prodigy album we've had. I'm not sure that there was a need for two. The vibe is similar.
It did give me energy
Classic.
Songs that I’ll jam to but will not actively replay. Smack my bitch up is nice
ok
I can't really tell a lot of 90s EDM apart. It's ok, but not quite Chemical Brothers or Underworld.
++: Funky Shit, Climbatize +: Breathe, Serial Thrilla, Firestarter, Fuel My Fire +-: Smack My Bitch Up, Mindfields, Narayan -: Diesel Power 6,1/10
It’s was okay, not for me this time of edm. I have heard the prodigy is a legend in this type of music but this style just didn’t grab me except for one song called “funky shit”
Electronic Big Beat with a punk attitude, The Fat of the Land by The Prodigy is propulsive and overwhelming. It's impossible to consider a state of stillness - of mind or body - while being immersed in this. Any technical genre description I could attach to this album would be lifted from a Google search rather than my own deep knowledge of rave culture or electronic music. It is easy to see why this album was so successful. It exudes swagger and mashes up genres. It is creative and a testament to the club as a generative locus for musical innovation. Sonically this is a powerhouse of beats, loops, and bass lines with exotic samples. The album is not without its problems, most notably in the latent misogyny of the opening track's title, oft-repeated throughout the song. The medium is not always the message, but not every message needs to be uncritically mediated.
Enformigt men helt ok
Prodigy might be the one EM band I like :)
Firestarter is a banger, I'm not too into most of it though.
Would listen to again. I remember this album cover more than i remember the music
surprisingly decent electronic album. a bit repetitive at times, but i suppose that’s par for the course when it comes to this genre
I like their energetic beats especially on the hits "Breath" and "Firestarter". But for a whole album it's much too repetitive. 2,5
I've always found this album cover hilarious. Anyway, this is probably The Prodigy at their peak. That likely aligned with the big beat genre also being at its peak in Britain and most of the rest of the world. I mean, "Breathe" and "Firestarter" are stone cold classics from the genre and continue to go hard. The rest of the album doesn't quite stack up and stay that consistent, but the sampling here is unique and the breakbeats are hard and booming. I'd put this slightly above "Music for the Jilted Generation" in terms of overall quality.
Cool album, sounds perfect for like a chase scene in a movie. Very hard electronic almost dance music. Funky shit is my favorite song.
Ich sehe den Impact des Albums, aber unfassbar schlechte Produktion
Probably more fun than lying in your puke after eating mud while a stranger pisses on your tent.
Yeah, that's a no for the first track. The rest of the album makes alright background noise if you need to kill a bunch of things in video games. Shoutout to Jimmy Eat World for having an awesome cover of "Firestarter" btw.
Despite being really familiar with the singles, I'd never listened to this record in full. The beats and production are great, but a lot of the vocals and rapping makes it trapped in that late 90s shtickiness.
Kind of cool but like in a your dad loved this in the 90s kind of way. Like, yeah sick beats bro but maybe don’t call your opening track “smack a bitch up”
Legit giving me 90s techno. Some album you would slap on your mixtape to try and get featured on Thrasher magazine.
My review, verbatim, from the other The Prodigy album on this list: “Some cool beats here. I could see this being a huge hit at a rave, and I would actually be into it there. But there’s no reason these songs (which most tracks barely qualify as) need to be this long.” Every word of that review still stands for this one. There’s no reason for there to be two The Prodigy albums on this list, although I’d give the edge to this one over Music for the Jilted Generation.
Generally I don’t know how much I enjoy full length dance music albums, but the singles on this one are undeniably great
Actually liked it much more than expected. Not my usual sorta thing but enjoyed it all the same.
Whish I was that crab. Fun beats, a bit long though
Fun vibes, unfortunately all vibes lasted for roughly an eternity. Probably better lengthwise when dancing to the tracks.
I liked this album. It was wayyyyyy better than "The Contino Sessions." I am normally not an electronic music fan but these beats were entertaining and I felt like these songs actually went somewhere and didn't just drone on. The lyrics were definitely questionable at times and not really a highlight of any songs. "Narayan" was wayyyy too long and "Serial Thrilla" was boring lol. I am not sure if I would return to this album, but it was entertaining. Liked Songs: "Smack My Bitch Up" (feels so wrong saying I liked this one, but the beat was so catchy) , "Breathe" , "Funky Shit" , "Firestarter" , "Fuel My Fire" (this was probably my favorite one)
Итс окэй. В юности я очень тащился по этой музыке. Сейчас мне кажется немного нелепой эта как будто бы фейк-агрессивная музыка, стерильная и ровная. Лучшая песня - Breathe.
Great music but can be a but repetitive at times
This kinda goes.
Enjoyed the banging drums and dark thumping rhythms.
I love the Prodigy. I saw them live, they were fantastic and I have fond memories of listening to them throughout my teenage years. However, the elephant in the room needs to be addressed. This album starts with the song "Smack My Bitch Up" and there is no defending this awful piece of misogyny. Unlike Notorious B.I.G's album, where this vileness was a constant undercurrent, the rest of the tracks on The Fat Of The Land aren't so cretinous. If it wasn't for the opening track, I'd give this album five stars. It's a shame really.
It's kinda fun. I don't like a lot but I do love the album cover. Will I listen to again: 10%
I'm the FIRESTARTAH! Ez a szám nagy bop, ezt meghagyom nekik, de nem tudok én a mosógépzenével mit kezdeni 😁
I’ve not heard this album for ages and I didn’t think it traveled through time well. I remember the confrontation of it (And Keith Flint!) when it came out. A pioneering sound and a timeless character. Less sonic than I remember
I think this is one of the better examples of this genre. The songs sounded distinct and I appreciated none of them were 20 minutes long. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
Fond memories of being 12 and stealing my brothers copy of this aside, I’m tempted to say this kick started my love of electronic music that’s led to 20+ years of DJing and making music. That’s probably a little true (though I’d blame The Chemical Brothers), but listening now it just didn’t hit the same. Maybe it’s the fact that the election was last night and I was emotionally exhausted. I didn’t so much have fun listening to The Prodigy’s “rave music you can understand as rock music” experience as much as it just felt good having Keith Flint just as mad as you at whatever. Long story short, the singles still hit hard. The rest is mixed and not every rock and rave mixture holds up well. 3/5
Crab rave
I remember hearing this quite a bit when it was first released. To be honest I wasn’t looking forward to diving back in, but I liked this better than I remembered. It felt more diverse than many other albums in this genre, I didn’t get the usual all the songs sound the same feeling. I certainly remembered Fire Started and Smack My Bitch Up, but the other tracks hold up better than I thought.
Noise Genre -- Have heard played at stadiums etc -- hype music
Fun album but definitely getting a bit repetitive towards the end. I wouldn't give it anything over a 3 Favorites - Firestarter, Smack my bitch up Least Favorites - mine fields
6/10 - There was some cool and interesting parts but a lot of it was not the best. I think that it is very close to being a great album but i just have too many issues with some of the songs.
The hits on this one rip. I am excited to read about that one when I am back near my book :)
Electric masterpiece.
Some obvious bangers but some filler too
Better than I remembered, and first time I have listened all the way through that I know of
This is what I imagine is playing in the background at a cocaine-fueled rave.
Never heard this before. Just okay. A soft 3 stars.
Until today I thought the lyrics to Smack My Bitch Up was “take my picture”. SMH. A little repetitive as most dance music is, but the nostalgia factor comes into play for me and this is more listenable to me than most other electronic dance music.
This album felt way cooler the first time i heard it back in matrix times.
I can appreciate what The Prodigy has done for the vast space that is electronic music. However, after listening through this whole album for the first time (of course I’ve heard the singles), I can say that I found it fairly boring. It doesn’t help that my electronic taste stretches into more IDM and experimental subgenres. But the songs on The Fat Of The Land tend to drag on longer than I’d like, leading to repetitive and predictable structures. I strongly believe this is meant to be experienced live, considering the members are known to dance during their shows.
Not too bad. It does have Fire Starter on it, their biggest hit.
If you’re looking for hardcore misogyny that you can dance to you really can’t go past The Prodigy’s Smack My Bitch Up. Ah the 90’s - when ‘woke’ was nothing more than a past tense. Along with Breathe and Firestarter absolutely cracking tunes.
I'm incredibly far from being a big beat fan but I gotta say that this album is an exception. It still gets tiring for my old ears after a while but I love the industrial vibe that comes with the crazy bass beats.
One of the few Big Beat/Break album I can stand, and even enjoy a little. Still far from my musical taste, but still a great album with nice tracks.
It was fine. Probably the most enjoyable electronic record I’ve heard. But still, there’s not much substance. There’s nothing to toe it all together and to form a cohesive album. It just doesn’t feel complete, and I have to deduct quite a bit for that. It also dragged on a while, which wouldn’t normally be too bad, but the songs just aren’t worthy of being so long when the styles are all so similar. I still can appreciate the mixing up however on some of these songs. Going from Breathe to Diesel Power was an experience for sure. Anyways, good electronic album, but still not good album as a whole.
Surprisingly more diverse than I originally thought.
SMACK MY BITCH UP
I expected to — wanted to — despise this album, based solely on the misogynistic title of the first track. Lyric aside, though, it was a pretty awesome track. Even added it to a “faves” list. And that continued throughout the album. Was unfamiliar with The Prosigy (I’m a DeadHead and classic rock person) and enjoyed this far more than expected.
Favorite Track: Serial Thrilla
September 3, 2024 🦀🦀 $11 for Apple Music 🦀🦀 🦀🦀 uses it for a 2nd Prodigy album 🦀🦀 I saw the "Firestarter" video online as a kid for some reason* and it did absolutely nothing for me. Ultimately I didn't mind The Fat of the Land, even though I predicted I'd dislike it. Some of the vocals are obnoxious but most of the tracks are pretty fun. HL: "Climbatize", "Mindfields", "Smack My B*tch Up" *I remember now, it was to understand Weird Al's parody of the video ("I can't believe this haircut!")
I always have a little bit of a through the looking glass feeling when I listen to electronic shit like this because I don’t love it but know there’s a version of myself I could have been who absolutely would. I feel pretty lucky to have made it out of the 90s without getting swallowed up in the abyss of ravelife, but I’m glad to be able to take a peak over the precipice every now and then.
I guess this is good for what it is, but I'm not really into it...3.
Am I a moron? My whole life, I thought Smack My Bitch Up was Snap My Picture. Suddenly, the track seems so much more aggressive. Well, The Prodigy aren’t lyrical Wordsworths, but there are some clever play on words moments, like Mindfields, etc. None of this is really about the words though, unless it’s to deliver a brief incendiary message. It’s about mixing metal and edm and raving like it’s 1997. I was only ten when this came out, but I was immediately transported back in time vibe-wise. When I put this on, my partner was like ‘Ooh! Firestarter!’ And I had no idea what she was talking about. I felt so out of the loop. I’m more in the loop now that I’ve listened to this and read on The Prodigy, but don’t really care to be. If I put this album on again, it’ll be for background music when I want to get hifi.
Kinda fun for a moment, before becoming annoyingly repetitive. Like a couple of young dudes discovering new buttons to play with on their older brother’s synth in the garage. Soon all the stoner bros in the hood stop by, to be gobbled by the radness of it all.
Better than I thought, plus fire starter and breathe (the pressure)
This feels far more deserving of being a hit album over other electronic 90s albums. It has the definitive classics for better or worse, the deep cuts that also keep the pace moving, and enough filler to still give it that stereotypical big beat sound! Less racing game, more street-racing game, the Prodigy is an act that has the potential to grab me, but often it just comes off as shallow. Party music, fun in the moment, but not worth the listen any other time. Perhaps I seem harsh, and I don't mean to be, as the album has good moments, especially when it takes influence from industrial scenes, but the album just feels like nothing extraordinary. Definitely from the 90s, which gives it its infamous success with tracks like Smack My Bitch Up, but thirty years later all I can think with a modern mindset is "look at that little guy on the cover go!" Still, will give it that boost for influence so it can scrape by into a middling spot for me.
Far from surprising. I think I had this CD back in the day. Track 1 - heavy rotation, track 2 - decent rotation, track 8 is a banger but it was played out for me in 1997. The rest of the album? Not good
161/1001 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑
Oh, if it wasn’t for those two hit singles. “Smack My Bitch Up” and “Firestarter” are the cringiest and most annoying songs on “The Fat of the Land.” But otherwise I think the Prodigy holds up pretty well for late 90s techno.
Do you remember how New Coke was a flop? Their executives commissioned Project Kansas to come up with an updated formulation. The taste tests showed that people liked the sweeter taste of Pepsi over Coke. So they made a sweeter version and put it to market as New Coke. The problem was that the taste test was flawed. You see people did prefer the sweeter taste of Pepsi…when they had a couple sips. The sugar rush sent their pleasure receptors into a frenzy…bing…pop…POW!!! But what the Coca-Cola company really wanted to find was a formula that would lend itself to binge drinking, diabetes inducing levels of dedication to Coke. And the sweet flash bangs were great once. But when the brain is drowning in sugar, it starts to go deaf. New Coke sucked and the market told them so. Soon Coke was rebranded as Coke Classic and the juggernaut continues…at least in terms of soda sales. The first 5 or so tracks of this album are New Coke…bing…pop…POW!!! But then the sugar hurts a little bit and I need to stop.
The Prodigy somehow found the sweet spot for beat-driven music with the right amount of lyrical and sound effect flare. They incorporate a ton of background sounds that work really well and they do techno in a way that's...dare I say..."catchy." I enjoyed this album, there's def some memorable bangers on here that transport you back to Fan's giant cd binder. I will date them (and myself) by describing this as "phat."
The Fat of The Land starts off with a couple hits but otherwise didn't keep me overly hooked. The following songs are fine but nothing memorable. While it's still a album, for some reason I expected to enjoy this more than I did. I remember being into The Prodigy and thought I had deeper ties to a few of their earlier albums. 2.96 stars
Great '90s breakbeat.
Interesting music
Interesting but not my cup of tea.
Standout songs: Breathe Serial Thrilla
Better than Daft Punk
He just keeps saying he's the Firestarter. Lots of the same? Some decent songs though.
Underhållande album med bra låtar, pluspoäng för fint "album art" bästa låten: funky shit. Stark 3
Danceable breakbeats with a punky feel and a side of psychedelia. A somewhat darker, rockier, edgier feel to this dance music. It’s got a lot of attitude. I like a good amount of what I hear, but few songs that are good enough for me to remember them. Some good highs, but not quite ultimate peaks. A reasonable floor, no real bad songs - just some that are less interesting or don’t really develop. It’s a decent album, but I’d rather listen to the Chemical Brothers. It could grow on me over time, but for now it’s fine.
In the vein of Fat Boy Slim and Chemical Brothers. Fun listen.
Some bangers on here for sure. A lot of filler, however. I can see how this would appeal to the large markets. It's a fun listen. Nothing groundbreaking.
3.5☆/5 07.26.2024
I listened to the hits all the time back in the day. When I listened today, it was fun to hear the rest of the songs, which I never really listened to back then. As always, I think it gets a little repetitive
Obviously bangers on here but it's a bit more difficult to listen to as an album. I think I prefer some of their other ones overall.
Solid with some bangers 7/10
“Breathe” still kicks ass. “Firestarter” and “Smack My Bitch Up” also continue to hold up fairly well. However, this is yet another example of a steep drop off beyond the album’s hits.
I truly feel there’s never been a group like The Prodigy, before or since. If they had been more copied or part of a group of bands performing similar music, I think their unique style would have developed a unique genre name, like grunge for Nirvana et al., but as it stands The Prodigy consider themselves electronic punk. They fuse rock, dance, electronic, punk, some metal, and most importantly big beat to create a sound that’s easy to dance to, but also incredibly furious in a way that most dance music isn’t. The first time I listened to The Prodigy, I did NOT like their sound. Maybe I was too turned off by the violent nature of “Smack My Bitch Up” (which I still am, despite the fantastic sound of the song outside of the lyrics). Maybe my taste in music has just grown more genre-diverse in the 15 years it’s been since I first heard The Prodigy. But with this listen, I couldn’t help but bob and fist pump to most of the tracks.
Good work album
Some awesome dance music, throughout. Not what is put in my music collection but if I were at a club I would want it playing.
My first electronic record from the generator. “Big Beat” acts like Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, and to a lesser extent, Chemical Bros, were the unsubtle maximalists of the 90s. Hugely exciting to my teenage ears but much less so when listening to them now. With that said, I still remember the thrill of seeing Poison and Firestarter on Top of the Pops!
Definitely of its era and definitely some hard rage music. I had a pretty good time with this, but was pretty worn out on it by the end.
I enjoyed the album in the main 3*
3 stars, no music for the jilted generation. far superior album.
3.75 Good electronic album actually really fun, way better than the last one
Situationally good. Not for everyday use.
Granted this is a great album. Just not one I would choose on my playlist. It is compelling. Hard to turn off.
I want to go to a rave for this album so much, it’s very 99’s, coherent, techno that I love. 3.3
What a great album cover. This crab is dancing and the blur makes it seem like it's dancing hella fast. What a good time this crab is having. As for the music itself it's passable.
i bet people who love this album think the matrix is the best movie of all time. it was overall ok, pretty good at points and absolutely horrible at others. there are glimpses of things that i like, but the songs are all at least 2 minutes too long. the beats are also a bit clean for my taste, i wish it was more abrasive overall.
Not the biggest fan of this type of music but I sort of dig it Top tracks: Smack My Bitch Up
Things I am: a fire starter, a twisted fire starter I think I used to play this way too much back when it came out, about to time travel back to a simpler time! From my memory I got sick of the singles real quick and really dug into the rest of the tracks.
Catchy beats but really not my type of music.
I really enjoyed!! I remembered some of these songs as soon as I heard them, lots of fun!! Felt like I was in a 90s video game or a rave!!
It was alright. Would have enjoyed it more if there were less instrumental tracks 3 ⭐️
Old enough to remember the hype when this came out. I was around 19ish and was definitely NOT into electronic music at that point of my life. I did enjoy Firestarter and the video on MTV etc, but never had actually listened to this album until now which is surprising since in my later years I have become a fan of electronic music especially groups like The Chemical Brothers who were clearly influenced by The Prodigy. Still, not a huge fan of this album. Has some good tracks like "Breathe" but a lot of it doesn't do much for me. Some of the tracks seem to do a bit better with diversity of samples and layering where some like "Serial Thrilla" are quite frankly repetitive and kinda boring. Overall, as someone who appreciates electronic music I can definitely underststand critics and fans putting this album in legendary status but for me personally it's not something I will want to listen to again front-to-back.
Nogen af mine største minder omkring det her album. 😜
Jees taas osastoa ”löytyy minun ipodilta” joten tuttuusetu on. A-puoli on hyvä, onneksi b-puolella on Firestarter nostattamassa alussa alkaneet bileet takaisin. Eli levy toimii kuin dj-settinä bileissä silloin kun tarttee tanssia. Ja se on hyvä.
Hyvä, että he alentuivat vokaaliraitoihin. Levy kannattaa kuunnella, vaikkei tyylilajin kiistämätön tehokkuus riittäisikään loputtomaan mielenkiintoon sitä kohtaan. Matala 3
Good album, would listen again.
Classic / but not really my bag = 5/10
3+. I didn’t expect to like this—-I think I just dismissed it as being for people I didn’t hang out with when it first came out, but it was actually fun to listen to. In a middle aged person at the gym kind of way, but still, I am a middle aged person and I need something to distract me from the elliptical.
Aggressive dance/synth music, at least the majority of the songs. I don’t have many opportunities to utilize it as a soundtrack. if I needed to let out my aggression, this would do. There are few lyrics, and even fewer I can understand detract from my enjoyment of the beat.
sounds really cheesy lol 5/10
This is a blast from the past for me. It was my first real introduction to party music. It's not something I just put on while sitting at home though.
Awesome! I know a lot of the songs somehow. “Breathe” is from something but a google search isn’t coming up with what. I considered making this a 4, but other than the songs I know, I wasn’t that into it. A surprisingly good album.
Major ‘you wouldn’t steal a car’ anti-piracy ad vibes. At first I was upset because I wasn’t a huge fan of our first drum and bass album. But I quickly realized that I’m actually familiar with these songs and after a google found out a decent amount were included in the soundtracks in what seems like every 2000s and 2010s action movie. Still, its mood music, and a rainy day off from work definitely isn’t the same as being in the club. The familiarity gives it a little extra oomph for me.
Some classic dance toons nearly as old as me
The sort of thing hackers in the 2000's would listen to in the movies. Standouts include Breathe, and Firestarter.
it's decent
The hits work, the rest feels like filler
Punk techno
Was wondering why it reminded me of the Matrix
A good album, I listened to it while reading. Very nice.
I'd relate this more to hardstyle than necessarily metal, but definitely an important blend of upbeat electronic music and more intense music. Strongly reminiscent of the late 90's, good to learn it's the first. Excellent cover art
Here we have The Fat of the Land by The Prodigy. There is a reason for this album to be on the list. It's decently popular. Apparently it's sold over 10 million copies, which is nothing to scoff at. Also, I've heard of this band and one of the songs on this album. Granted, I only know of it because of Epic Rap Battles of History, but that's still me having heard of the artist. Anyways, is this album good enough to balance its popularity? Yeah. I'd say it is. It's not my favorite album. Hell, it's not even my favorite album of 1997. But, it isn't my least favorite of 1997 either, and that's good. This album's pretty fun. The sound is bombastic and I enjoyed each of the songs. The writing isn't particularly meaningful, but does it really have to be? In an album like this? No. No it doesn't, and that's okay. This album succeeds at its goal. Are there problems? Yes. The album is too long, in my opinion. That's basically the one problem that I can describe without having to go into extreme detail about why this album just isn't really my thing personally. So yeah, this is a good album, but not one that personally appeals to me all that much. 3/5.
It got better towards the end, but it was a bit too funky for my tastes
Classic 90s. 3.5/5
"Smack My Bitch Up" and "Firestarter" are some of my favorite electronic songs ever, but the rest of the album does not live up to that hype.
Decent listen
I liked it because of the crab
Loved it
The lyrics on the opening track are inexcusable. Musically, there's a lot to enjoy on this album; I particularly enjoyed the hip hop influence on Diesel Power. Cut the first track and I'd bump this score a whole star.
I’m very nostalgic for this album but it’s a bit more repetitive and boring than I remember.
Kind of riding that fatboy slim train
7 year old me would have loved it, but 15 year old me liked it. Tracks were too long and.got boring fast. Definitely one for the club though. I would go CRAZY if Firestarter came on at a rave, but at home whilst I'm doing the washing, it's just alright.
Pretty good overall, but some parts haven’t aged well. Firestarter was one of those songs that seemed to be everywhere at its height of popularity. Firestarter is still an exciting song.
It’s possible this electronica music is beginning to wear me down but I didn’t hate this. Some of it I downright liked. How about that?
Well, this uses too much amen break samples for me sooo
I’m a fire starter, twisted fire starter.
Decent 90s house music with some interesting loops and vocal samples. Sort of fall into the trap that most house music does, it’s hard to listen to casually. Regardless, better than the other electronic and techno records On this list so far.
3/5 tænker jeg - har ikke stærke tanker om det hihi
Was alright background music, nothing special/wouldn't think to put it on again
Favourite song-breathe.
It hurts to give this album a 3 because I loved it so much back in the day. But it has the same problem other 90s electronic albums have- it was clearly made for a live experience so the music is repetitive and overlong. It was probably fine when you're vibing to it on ecstasy in a club, but listening to it while driving and sober? It can get old quick.
This reminds me of a soundtrack for a movie like Blade; get repetitive with a driving beat. Listening to it on it's own is... Fine. Just a little boring. I'm sure these were bangers in the club, though. I can absolutely see some drunk AF guy finger blasting his high AF rando in the dance floor of Jive while Breathe plays in the background. Lesser known tracks>>>>Famous ones (minefields>breathe)
Some absolute bangers, albeit problematic. There are some hits, and with good reason. I probably won't revisit the deep cuts very often.
Some great 90s electronic hits
Ihan jees, mutta ei kyl lemppari big beatiä. 3/5
Toisaalta isoja tanssihittejä, toisaalta aika tyhmiä biisejä kun koko levyn kuuntelee (minkä artistit toki itse ovat myöntäneet haastatteluissa). vähän samaan lapsellisen tuntuisten ysärilevyjen laariin menee kuin eminemit ym. menköön nyt kolmosella kumminkin, mut vois olla kakskin.
Pretty solid! The tracks are catchy.
Didn’t really think much of it
I just don't really get the appeal of The Prodigy. We get it pals, you've taken loads of drugs and you've gone mad. It's fairly generic music in the main, and is only really elevated when they lean way more into dance than drum and bass. Then you get something fairly interesting. Whichever one of them sings has a stinker of a voice too. Having said all that, Breathe is a nostalgic song to listen to and impossible not to enjoy on a fairly primal level.
My mom’s least favorite 90s band on alt radio. Has some good beats, but they all sound pretty similar
ah..trying to pry the nostalgia goggles from my eyes..tbh i think the singles off this album (and the amount of airtime the videos got on rage) helped get snobby punk baby me a bit more open to dance music. anyway. listening to whole thing now..it is so 90s, bless. does get repetitive tho, when ur not chewin on bikkies. its a couple bangers and a lot of "ok? ig i dont mind this?" (except narayan which is too fuckin long im sorry & i actively dislike fuel my fire) favs (predictable af): smack my bitch up breathe firestarter
Not my type of music but not terrible
Good enough to start your car in the morning, but not enough to drive you to work everyday. The opener, Firestarter, and a few others are cheap thrills, but there’s not enough staying power. It’s adrenaline fueled house music, with little need or want for a muffle. And sometimes constraint goes a long way to preventing an album from just being a fib.
Intense, energetic and interesting. But for me this belongs in a club, and not on a Monday morning at the office.
Cool but repetitive. Not really my style.
This is where The Prodigy started to normalise and their output become diluted by the main stream. I liked everything they did up to this album. They were more original, more weird, more edgy and more dangerous then.
I listened to Breathe on repeat in middle school. The rest of the album was okay.
Just not really my kind of thing. Probably not bad if you’re off your noggin in the mixer though. Simpsons: No
This had all the songs I knew from the Prodigy, which is why I thought that it was alright, but they all sound the same and get repetitive.
I’ve listened to Jess music from Peep Show. I’ve listened to this. I can’t tell the difference. I did like it though, I did a park run in the rain to it and it got me through most of it. I know it was groundbreaking but it’s not for me.
A deranged, highly energetic and addictive rave/electro album from the late 1990s. The production of the album is top class. In small doses this record is entertaining, but as an almost 1-hour long album I've found it quite exhausting. Musically it is also quite repetitive.
Craaaaaab Album. Craaaaaab Album. Love the Prodigy for what the album represents for 90s electronic. Not an album I actively seek out but came across in several people’s Case Logic’s throughout the years.
I like this album- I owned it, in fact. I think somehow it perfectly encapsulates a lot of the atmosphere around being 21 and living in northern Florida in 1997. But more importantly, I feel vindicated about being confused for YEARS that this band’s name is actually “The Prodigy” (not just “Prodigy”), because quite obviously there is no “the” before their name on this cover, and that’s exactly what I remembered. So there!
at first i made the mistake of listening to this on the phone. This record really needs to be listened to in stereo at least, if not surround sound. At the same time though it does follow the 'car radio' rule of being recognizable played on a tin can. Just look at a song like Breathe. The first few chords of...its not really a bass line or a melody line. I would call it a blue man tube noise. Everything in that song is played in service to that one phrase so the song can basically be boiled down to one measure easily recognized even through humming. Maybe its just a Chicago thing, but I feel like after the disco demolition of 1979 the radio stations didn't really have an appetite for dance music for a long long time. Sure we played music we danced too and we did play Groove is in the Heart, but mostly that stuff is more pop than dance. the Prodigy was specifically dance music and they were a huge success for a few years in a row. Many people think dance is what Prodigy is all about, but those people are all wrong. The Prodigy is about one thing only and always: DIESEL POWER! ...after the record ended autoplay went to Songs for the Deaf and it was a perfectly seamless transition.
I was in high school when this came out and I remember very clearly "Breathe," "Firestarter," and to a lesser extent "Smack My Bitch Up" having regular radio and MTV airplay. I also remember generally enjoying the songs and style, but not really having any desire to seek out the album or other Prodigy material. Having listened to "Fat of the Land" in its entirety it turns out that was a prescient decision. The three singles still stand out and "Diesel Power" (feat. Kool Keith) is a sort of hidden gem, but this is otherwise filler. It's well done to be sure, and it all paints a vibrant scene in my mind of seedy, underground clubs and such, but much better suited to a background concentration soundtrack or VGM. I also never realized just how little anyone else really contributed to the songs beyond Liam Howlett, though without Keith Flint's grimy Cockney accent they tend to fall flat. I would listen to this again, but I wouldn't be paying very close attention.
I don't find myself reaching for this sound very often, but after listening to it again, I suppose this is what I'd reach for. "Narayan" => "Firestarter" is pretty great.
Electronic is not a genre I’m familiar with. I thought parts of this album were okay, but overall I thought it was fine. I appreciate it more knowing the context behind it.
Very samey, and very 90's matrix. Got a bit bored half way through, Though the classics on this are still absolute bangers tbf
its okay, starts off strong, plus i have listented to a couple of songs previously YNN
it was ok, a little too long and repetitive but had some cool songs
Every song sounds the same. Of course I listened to it twice.
It's a solid album, just not for me. I find that some songs outstay their welcome and/or get a bit too repetitive for my liking, but I really appreciate the ambition and uniqueness to it all. A few songs I feel would fit in a soundtrack like Jet Set Radio perfectly! So while I'm not a fan, it's something I respect. It's not afraid with what it's doing, it's confident and competent with the beats and techno direction!
I have conflicting feelings listening to this. I think it’s very dynamic and powerful but no self-respecting person wants to listen to the words Smack my bitch up over and over. I know they were being controversial and the video was trying to challenge preconceptions but I can’t condone it even though the tune is great. And the rest of the album has the same feel. Great aggro jumping about music. Breathe and Firestarter are bangers and Prodigy’s only no. 1s - credit goes to larger than life Keith Flint. RIP Keith!
I'm almost at a 4-star on this one. As has been said of this genre, it's difficult for me to sink my teeth into it due to the repetitive nature of the compositions and the electronic-ness of the whole affair, but this was entertaining, and the various vocalists add a welcome element to the proceedings. Even the drum machine isn't an offense to this drummer, though the loops did start to beat my brain into a dull thud before the album finished. But this is a 3.5 for sure... do I go up or down from there... ?
Despite some absolutely seismic songs - namely Firestarter and Breathe - this one has never chimed with me as much as the Prodigy’s earlier albums. The more aggressive sound is just not as appealing to me as the giddy fun of the first two records.
Good but becomes background music
I'm not sure if I know any other songs from The Prodigy besides "Smack My Bitch Up"—at least not off this album. The opener is iconic, in large part because of all the controversy surrounding the lyrics and music video. I won't comment on that, but the song is decent (though long). "Breathe" is a cool song. That synth line is very EBM/dark wave, and the vocals and guitars are like a mix of punk (Sex Pistols) and Britpop (Blur). Then add the trip hop, and it's a great dance mix. "Funky Shit" sounds like an inferior version of the Mortal Kombat song, sorry. I could have also done without the weird vacuum and siren sounds at the end. "Fuel My Fire" is probably my favorite track on the album. It actually sounds like a real song and not just a collection of loops and sounds. A lot of the songs seem to follow a formula of one part trip hop, one part Brit pop, one part industrial. Sometimes the result is cool, and other times it starts to get repetitive. The "Oriental" synth line of "Minefields" stands out, as do the bagpipes in "Climbatize," but then both songs devolve into more of the same. Most of the lyrics are simple and repetitive in the same way—just something to fill the space rather than trying to say anything. My biggest complaint with this album is that the songs are too long. In the context of a rave that's fine, but it's not something I'd just listen to at home. There's not enough variation in the music to keep me interested that long. The album is fine. Very repetitive and forgettable.
7/10 - 3/5 I liked how this album sounds, but the songs are longer than they need to be. It felt repetitive. I'd assume that's mostly because of the genre, which I'm not super familiar with.
I remember when this came out, loved it then, it's ... okay now.
- This album art is literally the crab rave, 5 stars - Disappointed the music is not the crab rave music - Honestly kinda hype, feels like the soundtrack to a chaotic night out
I wasn't much a fan of this album when it was released--generally not a great fan of the Big Beat sound (Chemical Brothers et al). A little goes a long way. On the other hand, Prodigy isn't going to take a left turn halfway through the album and throw a slow song in. If you need a good workout album, this would probably suit your needs.
I don’t think this cute little crab would like what it’s representing :(
Es buena fusión de electrónica y rock, pero se me hace un poco repetitivo. Lo admiro igualmente! 3
Don't know when I'd ever listen to this again when not on allot of drugs at a rave or something. Breathe and Firestarter are jams I guess
enjoyed this quite a bit, with the exception of the first song. good trance dance with a bit of the 80's spin me right round in there
Notable tracks: Breathe, Smack My Bitch Up, Firestarter
It was pretty alright.
There was probably 3 tracks that I enjoyed off of this album, but I could see how influential it was to the world of dance/ breakbeat music.
Not my genre, will relisten while working out
That was a trip to revisit this album 26 years later. The singles still kick ass, but the rest is a bit bland. Except I found a new interest in Narayan. Overall this is a fun album, but a few single tracks only carry it so far. Not a great "album" imo.
This is the kind of 90s electronic that felt so edgy and fun at the time. Electronic music doesn't sound like this anymore. Repetitive overall, but enjoyable in the background. After a while I couldn't tell tracks were changing anymore. 3*. Highlights: smack my bitch up (lol), breathe (excellent groove)
Dacht aan het begin pillen nodig te hebben, maar kwam er steeds meer in. De Staat heeft Firestarter gecovered leuk man
Weet niet zo goed wat ik hiermee moet. Smack My Bitch Up en Climbatize zijn goated tho.
Nice electro music
An intensely 90s album. Not really what I would choose to listen to most days, but I also get dance tracks are meant for, yknow, dancing, so I can live with how crazily long some of the songs are. Lots of cool bass and wobbles. Best song: Firestarter
Thoughts before listening: I never owned this album, but the hits were pretty ubiquitous for someone obsessed with music at the time. I was never a huge fan of the techno/electronic scene, but I did like the Prodigy's more rock approach to the genre. I'm sure I will recognize quite a few songs on here and that the nostalgic enjoyment will be strong. Review: Right out the gate I recognize "Smack My B Up"...this is a very memorable song and video. I believe I even may have seen the controversial video during its one time airing on MTV. Furthermore, I am well aware of "Breathe" and "Firestarter" which again were songs I enjoyed during high school without actually ever loving this band. All in all the album is fine. It wasn't something I gravitated to 25 years ago and it likewise isn't something that I find myself loving today. There are certainly some fun songs on here that I am happy to add to the playlist, but this is ultimately a 3-star album.
The Fat of the Land is seriously flabby around the middle. With the exception of Funky Shit, everything from Diesel Power through to Mindfields is pretty one dimensional and oddly boring, Narayan is wanky, as you'd expect from anything featuring Kula Shaker. It's also waaay longer than it needs to be. Besides the singles, which I've heard 64 millions times in clubs or everywhere (and I'm so bored of Breathe) I only really like Funky Shit and Climbatize. Climbatize is ace. It's probably the least Prodigy song the Prodigy ever made. I remember particularly enjoying sticking that song on the original PlayStation and watching the fractal generator. The different movements in the song worked particularly well with it as I'm sure you can imagine. Not getting into the debate over Smack My Bitch Up other than to acknowledge it, and say that song, if they were chanting Pack My Fridge Up instead, would still be fucking excellent, and the music has lost none of its power in the last 25-odd years. So yeah, obviously their biggest album, but the two prior to it were both far superior. There's an argument to be made that this is possibly actually the worst Prodigy album overall (although I've only heard the first 5 and have just this second learned there's two more after that). I'm only giving it 3 stars because of 2 absolute classic singles and 2-3 other good songs.
Decent album, I like the prodigy. Not my go to though
Funky, great for a late night drive when you’re falling asleep
