Desde Smack My Bitch Up quede perpleja. después incomodidad gustosa. un 7
Always liked this album but never loved it outside of the first two tracks .
Meh
Some good songs some that felt a bit long and noisy
Some amazing songs on this but also a few I wasn't massively into.
This is very energetic, dancy, club-scene music. I found myself getting bored about halfway through because the lyrics get pretty repetitive and the energy gets kinda stagnant, so this is album I'd sprinkle into a playlist or listen to one or two out of the context of the album. Also, there's a musical element (not quite sure what the original instrument is) in the start of the first song that just sounds like farting. It didn't overstay its welcome, but that was weird to hear at the top of the album.
Ah yes, the album that looks like it’s going to start playing the crab rave any minute now. We start out, with a track charmingly titled “Smack my Bitch up”. Title aside, the actual music was alright and fun to listen to at times, just having “Smack my bitch up” being yelled periodically somewhat took me out of it. Breathe had its moments. I’m not a huge fan so far as the beats have sounded very similar to each other. Same with Diesel power. This guy has good flow, but all the tracks sound very similar. I’ll give Funky Shit some credit, it was in fact funky. Serial Thrilla also was a bit of a bop. Minefields redeemed this album for me. I thought it was super cool. Narayan was also quite good. Firestarter was sick. I think that’s all I need to say. I really liked Climbatize but Fuel my fire was back to being meh. 3.5/5 ⭐️
Had listened to the previous 2 albums alot but when this came out, I wasn't too bothered. Didn't like the singles much at the time. I like it a bit more on this listen, but some of these big beat tracks are plain bad. 3 Heard before? Some Owned: No 65/259 (25%) Will I get: No
Decent tunes - good high energy stuff
This album could not exist in any other time period than the late 90s. It's so aggressively of its time. Not too bad, decent background music.
This album represents my high school days way more accurately than I wish it did making it Surprisingly nostalgic.
The second track is great 9/10. the rest of the album is decent but ultimatley bland.
A bit repetitive. I felt like pretty much every song should have either done a bit more with the beat or been cut by ~2 minutes
Nothing wrong with this album but I wasn't really feeling it.
This record brings me back to a record store trip I made in ‘97 where I bought this record and Radiohead’s Ok Computer. I thought this album had the potential to be the Never Mind the Bullocks… of electronic music. I also bought Ok Computer as my kind of safe bet figuring I liked Radiohead’s last album, so this should be pretty good. I liked the Prodigy album, it was cool but I loved the Radiohead album. Little did I know both albums would be industry changing for different reasons. This album didn’t hit with me right away, and while it grew on me over time, it hasn’t aged very well, in fact, listening to it now, it sounds extremely dated. There’s lots of good stuff here, but thinking back to that day in ‘97 reminds me of the joy of discovery record stores used to provide.
30 - The Prodigy - The Fat of The Land = 3 Great example of an album that is good, relevant and has a couple of good/fun songs… but it’s not something I’m really going to put on or look to listen to. It’s a grinding sort of drum and bass driving beat with distinct, aggressive vocals. Firestarter is a hit of a song and good. Breathe is an urgent banger with a driving energy that’s infectious. Smack My Bitch Up was the first Prodigy hit - probably as much for the name as the silly groove - but a catchy song. This is a good album, but I’ not going to turn to it except in moments for a quick taste. If it comes on, I’m not changing the station.
Drum n bass goodness
Iconic and enjoyable listen, aggressive electronic at it's most nineties
está bien pero sin más
Ah, The Prodigy. I remember the music video for Firestarter freaking me out when it came out. I was only 10, and pretty sheltered, so the whole thing was upsetting. Be here we are, nearly 30 years later. Truth be told, I’ve always enjoyed their upbeat dance electronica. It is by no means great, but this album gets the blood pumping and body moving: great for exercise or chores. There is nothing here that’s going to change your life or impress you. There is, however, some fun to be had. Plus, where would Guy Ritchie be without some of these tunes?
This was fine but nothing amazing
a little scary but got me in the mood to be creative.
A few stand out tracks but becomes a bit repetitive.
With the over abundance of mediocre electronic music I was expecting the worst. I think if I was younger, went to clubs whatever, I would appreciate this more. Maybe I’ll give it another try.
overlong but the couple of tracks at the start kick ass
we’ve got crabs!
pretty cool
Finally a Little electro
Good but a bit long
Legal. Essas canções puramente DnB me pegam. O verdadeiro “tambor e baixo”. Eletrizante e envolvente. Me lembrou em momentos a música do Jeremy do Peep Show, “This is outrageous!!!”. 3.5
I was born in 1985 so back in 1997 and 1998 I was exactly the right age for Prodigy. Breathe and Firestarter still sound good almost 30 years later but Smack My Bitch Up must be one of the worst songs ever released. Apart from those three songs, there's nothing really special about the album but it still goes on and on for an hour.
I forgot how many hits they had from this album.
This was a blast to listen to. Liked the groove and overall experience. Solid 3. Best track was Breathe.
CRAB RAVE.
Kind of goes in one ear and out the other, another album that goes harder in The Club(tm). I do really like Narayan and Firestarter though. 7.5/10.
Nice beats but not my scene, not really convinced it had to be this long either. Favourite track: Breathe.
It is quite a good techno electronic album. Some pretty good elements within the album, but it didn't connect to me. Would definitely enjoy it more in the right context, but it achieved its goal in helping me clean the house. Awesome album cover though.
The first 2 songs are great but the rest kind of had me less interested.
maybe 3.2
Love the album
Some absolute crackers on here. I feel like they are holding the album up, a few forgettable tracks inbetween 6.5-7/10
Some killer, some filler. All in all, engaging and general fun, but more suited to dancing than home listening.
The sound of 1997. Beautifully produced and is the best in its genre. A top 3 out of 5 from me.
Electronic music is not usually something I enjoy, and though I won’t likely ever listen to this again, it was definitely energizing and more enjoyable than I anticipated.
Smack My Bitch Up opens up strong. Funky Shit was another good one. The album is ultimately a bit samey the whole way through but that isn't the worst thing.
Pretty good start but felt like after a bit some of the songs sounded the same.
This was a fun listening experience for me. The album gets your attention immediately and the engineer did a phenomenal job of making the album flow from song to song. The highs were very high but the lows were pretty low. Overall I enjoyed this album and I definitely plan on coming back to it. 3/5.
This was a fun album, very unique
Decent album. Firestarter was a cool track, as was Breathe, which still gets played on radio these days. A few others I dug. EDM just really isn’t my thing. This was better than a lot of other stuff I’ve heard as it wasn’t just strong beats. All the same, not amazing.
Best Song: Breathe. Maximally crunchy. Worst Song: Serial Thrilla. Both times, that grating "whirrr" sound made me think that my computer had frozen. Not exactly musical. Overall: It's decent, but it feels very "juvenile" in a way I can't really explain. Listening to it, I just imagine a bunch of young boys in some urban setting, doing amateur parkour and shadowboxing. Music for having your action figures beat up other action figures. Music for punching air.
Would have been awesome to listen to if I was British or a Vampyric race traitor. Otherwise, pretty decent. Has its heaters, but some of the other ones are a bit of a drag.
På "The fat of the land" går man på rå kraft, man har i stort sett blivit Mötorhead. Svag trea
Prodik! Prodik! Spela Prodik!
Avslutande punkpastischen Fuel My Fire hade gärna fått stanna i byrålådan.
Brought me back to the days when Kris and I would slam dance for hours at all night raves.
Good album. Not sure I can imagine listening to this anywhere that *I* would go which does make replay-ability a little difficult. Also, I enjoy it when songs have words. Season: Early Winter at Night Favorite Song: Breathe
This album reminds me of the opening of batman beyond and that was an unmeasurably hype time as a child. As a kid, this is exactly what nightlife music sounded life. it's fun and quirky. As an adult, I can appreciate it electronic music more, but it definitely has a time and place, I wouldn't really seek it out, but If I was out and about, I wouldn't mind hearing it. Ill leave a snip from a much better review than mine: " Writing as one who has never “Smack[ed] My Bitch Up”, I should perhaps merely confess that I can’t relate and move on. But that wouldn’t be fair to the art."
Good intro to punk techno.
Maybe a full hour is to much
Classic beat beat tracks on here from late 90s when that subgenre was a think. I never heard the whole album though, just the singles. Love the Kool Keith feature on Diesel Power. Not sure I'd go back and listen to the whole album though. It's a little abrasive--probably I'd have liked it more if I'd familiarized myself with it in the 90s. 3/5
Difficult not to like the Prodigy - plenty of heart.
A headbanger’s dance album.
Not a big EDM fan, but this one is different. It has an in-your-face attitude that doesn't rely only on endless loops and drum machines. It's manic and a bit menacing but kind of enjoyable.
Pretty decent album, I liked it more than I thought I would.
My rating 3.2. Fun
On paper I shouldn't like this but Keith has a killer voice
This is as good as electronica can get for me.
I liked this album. I would listen to it again. I like the aggro big beat sound. This sort of fits nicely between Chemical Brothers and early Ministry in my music listening spectrum. I could do without the whole misogynistic sounding Smack song. Overall, it's about a solid 3.5, but rounding down for various arbitrary reasons I can't really articulate.
Not my thing, but I heard a fair bit of this album when it was released since a lot of my cohort liked it. It's aggressive and sounds good, so I get it if you like this. I'm sure people thought the first track title was funny 30 years ago. Hard to imagine that.
This is ok. Might deserve another listen even.
Pretty good. Not a lot of strong opinions either way.
I feel like I'm watching a 90s movie rave scene
Quite fun learning where songs you "know" actually come from
Standouts Smack My Bitch Up Breath Firestarter
the cover of this album perfectly represents how it feels to listen to it
Love the classics but got slightly bored by the rest by the end of the songs. Really like the vibe overall!
The recognizable hits were good, the rest of the album was fine but without the familiarity it was just noise. For me this is always just background music, filler for when you're doing something that requires some concentration but you need something else to fill the silence.
Fun!
Got a couple iconic songs, the rest is also fine. Not bad at all, but not my music after all
Some good ol' RUGGA RUGGA electronic I somehow heard this cover way before I ever heard Prodigy's original Firestarter and I still think it is such a beautiful rendition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPI3b9iPSN0
The album used in every late 90s to early 2000s action movie.
CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE CRAB RAVE This is a hard one to rate for me. I really enjoyed the groove and feel of most tracks, and they transitioned pretty smoothly. However, as with most electronic dance albums, most songs went on for too long and some had quite problematic lyrics. It’s not aged that well… 5.5/10
Nah. No me llegó. 5/10
Punchy tunes, aggressive fancy music, not music for your nan to listen to.
Hasn't aged well and a reminder of why I never "got" The Prodigy.
Mixed feelings about this one. Lyrically it's bad (particularly the first track), but that's clearly not the point in this type of music. Musically it's OK. The positives are that there's a bit of variety, with the majority being synth/sampling, each track has lots of different sounds and interesting stuff going on, and some of it goes pretty hard and was quite enjoyable. Negatives (for me) are that I'm just not into this type of music. I found the middle of the album really quite... boring? From "Diesel Power" onwards I was just really not that interested. The tracks got really repetitive to the point that they almost got a bit grating. If I was off my face at a rave... maybe this would be peak. Sat at work, not so much. There's strong nostalgia here for me, because this album was huge in my childhood. These tracks popped up everywhere in media; adverts, games, videos etc. so I think I knew every track on the album already, but I think that might be the only thing saving it from relegation to a 2.
Preteen me thought the first song was sick. The rest of the album is cool electronic and I can’t deny it.
Good pump up album for a very specific vibe. Techno punk?
This whole thing sounds like the 90s. But aside from the bangers, everything else sounded like covers of their own songs.
This sounds like something I would have really enjoyed when it came out. Lots of good stuff on this record.
Still holds up - singles very strong
Narayan could do with being another 9 minutes
I'm not a big fan of Dance music, but I quite liked this album which opens with the highly controversial "Smack My Bitch Up", although after a while all of tracks began to sound the same.
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Saved some bangers.
Way better than it should be. Smack My Bitch Up gets me too jacked up. I’ve had that, Climbatize and Breathe on the gym Rodri on lately. The rest of the album is fine.
Like the last one from The Prodigy, this is way too long. Breathe and Firestarter are fucking bangin’ tracks that I still hear sampled/remixed today
Quite good, interesting reading about the approach to sampling used. 3.8 stars
So I'm familiar with several songs on this album - as would be anyone with a pulse in 1999. Smack, Breathe, and Firestarter were everywhere back then. At the time, the sound and energy seemed attractive and interesting just like Korn, Limp Bizkit, and much of Blink 182. And like those bands, after 30+ years it doesn't sound as fresh or entertaining. In fact, several songs in and the thumping beat and background tracking just feels repetitive and annoying. Old man grumpy? Maybe. But I doubt I'm alone. I award 1 bonus point for the mentioned songs but even with, for me, this is just a 3.
“Solid”
Brings me back to high school house parties! They are the best at doing music I don't enjoy!
Fun to workout to!
Fun electronic dance album. Personally, I would give it a 6/10. Not entirely my vibe but also not bad.
Verbal meme: Bernie Sanders standing in a winter coat I am once again asking why we need multiple middling albums from artists, electronic and otherwise. 2.5 stars. Rounding up because the 3 singles are still solid.
One of the best music videos of all time was made for Firestarter. Breathe is another banger but the rest of the album feels severely dated. But it still stands that Firestarter was a leap in electronic music. "I'm the bitch you hated."
Muut kuin sinkkujulkaisut ei hirveästi iskenyt. Silti ihan ok. 3,25/5.
Not my thing
I’m a fire starter? A twisted fire starter! Banger of an Album with classic tracks
CRAB IS HERE!!! Can’t believe this isn’t crab rave. This thing disappointed me today. I always hear about the prodigy being life changing edm and it was just okay edm. Some of the vocals on this thing are shaman level garbage and some of it is alright. I feel like this is what other people thing linkin park sounds like. Leaving this project with a feeling of “yeah that was alright”. There is some great production on here though.
Ok
Ok this kind of music is usually not y thing, but I liked it way more than I thought I would. I listened to it at work and found myself bopping my head to it without even thinking. Very cool vibe.
I also smack my bitch up
Every song sounds the same with the exception of Narayan and Fuel My Fire.
Starts off strong but loses momentum about halfway through. Songs start to blur together, still a good listen and a 6/10 for the strong start. Favorite tracks- “Breathe” “Diesel Power”
Some songs slapped. But it didn't make me go AAAAAAAAA :0 !!!!
interesting
Ganske kult!
This is a properly good electronic album. A good example of the genre. But to include it as one you must hear before dying is ludicrous. Off this list with thee.
Again something painfully 90’s and maybe one that didn’t age as well as other things from that period. I loved it at the time, bought it on the day of release but just feels a tiny bit one track. That said some great beats, and Narayan remains a favourite
super cool i just wasn’t in the mood 😞
Had more fun with this than I expected. Definitely gave me energy to start my Monday. Won't go back but great listen through.
Firestarter is the song that tells you exactly who Prodigy is: INSTIGATOR! Everything about this is designed to be provocative, to get you to talk about it. Their look, their provocative video for Smack My Bitch Up & lyrics designed to be off putting or offensive to the "normal" people. Punk! Very Punk in that sense.
High energy and better than expected
I was actually sort of happy this popped up. When Firestater landed in N.A. I pretty much discounted them as a novelty. But in the last few years a lot of newer musicians I like have cited The Prodigy as a big influence. I’ve been meaning to check out whatever I was missing. So now the news is in! A decent play. Some of it sounded hopelessly dated. Some holds up. I think the biggest issue was that it’s shallow and repetitive. I did like the energy behind it.
Definitely better than the last Prodigy album I got
Here's an ironic twist on my typical automatic 5 for a record with timeworn sentiment. 'Fat of the Land' used to feel like raw, profane, electronic overload, but now it's dated and deflated a bit. But I can't dismiss what an impact it made in the late 90s along with other technical bombastic dance projects like Crystal Method and Chemical Brothers. The Prodigy came in like meth-addled, psychotic hoodlums, but in the fun, danceable way. This record is their most well-known, but some of the others still feel more fresh and vigorously anarchic.
Immediately felt VERY different to what I would usually choose for myself music-wise. But it’s a vibe, energizing. I liked Narayan a lot.
Hard-hitting, groovy, menacing, and a little too long and repetitive. The good tracks hit like a truck, but I feel like this is better suited for a dancefloor or a club than a solo listen.
I remember this being better, perhaps it didn't age well? Still... its not bad.
Nostalgic but not a lot else
You do not get more 90s Electronica than this.
I think the number of albums saying this is the seminal album of the genre is an indictment on the genre more than an endorsement of this album.
Solid
If it has to be electronic music (which I don't really like), then I'm happy to go with The Prodigy. “The Fat of the Land” is the relevant album here, and I can still remember hearing “Firestarter” everywhere for a while. Of course, this album is also quite monotonous, but at least Keith Flint brings a certain punk attitude to it, and you have to give The Prodigy credit for the fact that their beats are instantly recognizable. At the time, “The Fat of the Land” could even be described as innovative—no one else was so consistently sitting on the fence back then. Conclusion: never my favorite album, but a respectable milestone in music history.
I bought this when it came out in 1997, and it hasn't changed. Full of banging tunes, but as an album it's a bit one-paced and by the end I'm tired of it.
What in the Tony Hawk Pro Skater is going on here. It is what it is, not on my daily or weekly or monthly spins but hey it's kinda a vibe.
Can't wait to ask Alexa to play "Smack My Bitch Up" in the nursing home some day. While the title/main sample are unnecessarily aggressive, it's an undeniably fun song. Diesel Power featuring a Kool Keith, is fine enough. Lots of shuffling drums and vocals that sound like they are being forced in and out of pipes or timewarps. I don't hate it by any means, but it has completely become background and indistinguishable by Narayan. Yeah, my general impression after listening through twice is that it is a little better than just fine, but not enough to be really "special." I like this for innocuous background working music, but couldn't see myself actually dedicating a listen otherwise. So in that sense, I see this as a 3.
Great album cover. Decent album as far as electronic goes. Certainly is aggressive. Climbitize was my fave.
i alr knew this one cus of migo but never listened to it end to end. each song independently was p good the beats r fun but too repetitive altogether. it giving the background music of my nintendo gameboy racing game <3
3+ Stars (9/15)
This is not the crab rave I remembered. Weird, but grew on me.
The best of their albums. Three classic hits and several other good tracks.
nice textures and ill sample on the opener. Firestarter is a banger tho
I remember the excitement of it coming out, but I didn't really get it then, and not sure I do now.
90s electronica, another artist that's new to me. I was able to enjoy the vibe it cast while I was working.
Not my style
Banger album cover. I'm not the biggest electronic music fan but this was fun.
(64/100)
I think I picked this up the day it came out. I had the previous two albums and had always enjoyed the band, both on record and live. This album certainly includes a few classic Prodigy tracks - and Firestarter was massive at the time. Almost 30 years later it doesn’t sound as fresh as it used to though. Still liked it, but you can tell it’s of a certain era.
Didnt hate this (I'd expected to) but the first track limits it's score to a 3
It's alright
There are some bangers on here but that repetition really just puts a damper on the rest of the album. Still. I liked it for the most part. Top 4: Smack My Bitch Up, Breathe, Diesel Power, and Funky Shit All there is repetitive songs but no "bad songs" I guess. 3.25-3.50/5
Nowhere near as good as their first two albums. Marks the point where they began to try a little too hard...
If hilltop hoods and edm had a baby
Most of the time with electronic music I find it hard to focus on the music and kind of zone out. The first track was good, and Breathe was also pretty good, and distinct enough that you can actually tell the difference (another issue I tend to have with electronic music). It didn't really get better though, and never got as good as the first song. But that crab cover is sweet, so I'm giving it an extra star for that.
good but not my thing
i could listen to it again, but it's basically the same thing with different lyrics for the whole album kinda good though for a couple of songs
Definitely my favorite British electronica. Probably by a long, long shot.
big 3
Great album, made the cycle to work pretty intense, just not something I'd typically listen too.
I must admit there are some cracking, punchy songs on this. It's not my thing but it's well made. Let's not mention some of the lyrics. Probably a 5 on drug infused parties, sitting at home in my sofa it's a 2 for me, with an extra star for punchiness and influence.
I’m sure this music is great when played at a party, but it just doesn’t do it for me when I listen to it. It’s just a bit uninteresting to me.
In the right environment I have no doubt that this album slaps (I.e. - 1am at a rave, at a house party that had the cops called on it, etc..). Sitting at the breakfast table looking at a plate of eggs is not one of those places. There are some banger tracks on this compilation that can get you hyped up in seconds, but again you need an atmosphere that is conducive to noise, movement, and small fits of chaos. Overall I enjoyed the listen.
I take back every time I said an album sounded repetitive in every other review I’ve ever written. If I wanted a man yelling at me over electronic beats all day, I would have kept my high school job at Radio Shack.
Good for the time, especially at the age was then, it’s too loud for me now.
Peak late Nineties. Brings back memories of freshman year in college.
A good listen, lots of energy, some unique sounds even though most everything sounds the same. Starting to feel dated
Not really my thing and I don't see myself coming back to it, but it was nice while I did some chores
Always makes me think of the matrix era. Hack the planet! That kind of thing
Not my cup of tea but definitely a good album
Mescla sons afrcans, arebs amb coses modernes. Hi ha poca veu. Pero original.
i kinda like it, but, i need to turn it off before i go insane
Unreal energy, great blend of electronic dance and rock influences, whilst packing a serious punch. There is so much to like about this album. It’s just let down slightly by some middling tracks that fall flat and a touch too much repetition.
Smack My Bitch Up - It's alright, not exactly going to be my genre but solid for what it is. Also, dislike the lyrical concept. 5/10 Breathe - This is up my alley a bit more. Liking the bass and vocal lines, and the drums fit in nicely. 6/10 Diesel Power - LOVE the rap on this. Energetic yet simple, and good! 8/10 Funky Shit - Not much to comment about on this record, eh? 6/10 Serial Thrilla - I just love the accent man. 6/10 Mindfields - This a vibe. 7/10 Narayan - This one's one of the best so far. Like the vocals, instrumental goes hard too! Incredible until you realise it's 9 minutes long. 7/10 Firestarter - Already know this track relatively well. Solid, solid, solid. 8/10 Climbatize - Not half bad. Like the composition and the little shaker drum thing. 6/10 Fuel My Fire - I like this one. Not much to say elsewhere. 7/10
It's more than 3 stars. 3.67
This starts off well enough (bar the obvious lyrical 'issues'), and Diesel Power is an absolute banger – far and away the best tune here. But I drifted off not long after that an forgot this was even on. Maybe sat at my desk is not how this was meant to be experienced, but all got a bit repetitive a few tracks in. Half a great album, but could have done with more...something.
I wasn't really in the mood for this, first thing. But I persisted and gave it a spin. It's all very familiar. The beats build up, the bass kicks in, you go apeshit crazy. It's not exactly a home listening album. You need to be mashed off your head and stumbling into a ditch to really appreciate. Sadly those days are long behind me.
Name seit eppis aber no nie gross gloset. Halt huere Edgy… Its giving shadow the hedgehog und tribal tats. Standout Tracks: Smack My Bitch Up, Funky Shit & Narayan
Not as good as it thinks it is
intense and v 90s
There are some good tracks, but I just can't get into the general Big Beat sound and because of that, don't really like any of the radio hits. I found myself enjoying the remixes on the deluxe version more than the full album.
This is probably the first electronica album I actually somewhat enjoyed. Punk influenced, fast paced, and heavy, this album exists for x-games montages & tony hawk games.
Highlight Song/s: Breathe This is a lot more enjoyable than than previous album I'd heard of theirs (Music for the Jilted Generation.) It is very texturally rich, not as monotonous as Jilted Generation. I really like the vicious vocals in Breathe, Serial Thrilla, Firestarter.
Decent
These guys are silly.
A novel and thrilling mix of breakbeats, rock and industrial that has become not-so-novel and honestly a bit exhausting by the sixth or so track. Nifty crab though.
After suffering through other 90s British electronica like Orbital, Chemical Brothers, and Fatboy Slim's first album, I was very skeptical of this one, however it turns out it's... not that bad? Most of the songs badly need an editor but they have beats and are catchy, Breathe is a banger, and Mindfields was a key song on The Matrix soundtrack that I listened to nonstop in middle school. You couldn't get away with that title of the first track in 2025 though.
Good album.
No. I hate this.
This is brainless party music, best enjoyed while rolling on ecstasy at a rave in 1995. It's a time capsule of mainstream electronic music 30 years ago, and I still like some of the beats and production.
I've never listened to this album (28). Good in its genre, which is not mine.
Savne någe catchy, dette e litt for gjevn musikk te å vær veldig outstanding... MEN, d e jabnå så dræge! Beste sang: Serial Thrilla
This album definitely transported me the late 90s. Not really my style of music. A lot of it had great energy/was fun sounding. I would give it a 3.5 if possible.
The album as a whole still holds up after more than 25 years. Albeit, not something I'll likely listen to again.
Every time I see an EDM or House album on this generator, I dread listening to it. I never really liked music like that because it can be really repetitive and annoying to listen to. This album differs from all of them. It's weird because while the genre can be really annoying, there might be just one album that sets itself apart from it and it's this one. It's not on my top 10 of all time but it definitely ranks higher than any electronic album would. Also, the cover is iconic and Breathe is one of the greatest songs ever. This is a great album that should be representative of 90s rave music. Favorite Tracks: Smack My Bitch Up, Breathe, Funky Shit, Narayan Rating: 3.5/5
I don’t hate it, but at a certain point they all sound the same. Would be better if I was on molly
A bit headachy. Heard a lot of songs that I sort of knew (eg Breathe)
Didn't know punk electronica was a thing, but it makes sense... I've listened to this album once before some years ago, and my reaction is largely unchanged: it's not bad, the amen-break-style backbeat throughout makes it all feels a bit repetitive and samey, and I can't work out whether "change my pitch up, smack my bitch up" is misogyny or just a fun way of saying "I'm doing this, let's goooo". I will say that starting this one immediately off the back of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" - a transcendent free jazz odyssey that is a cry to God himself as his saxophone prays and preaches... and suddenly being hit with "SMACK MY BITCH UP" was a weird time. I feel like I should be learning something about perspective from this, but I really have no idea what.
Not my favourite type of music but I was 11/12 when this came out and I liked a few tracks and how they reminded me of the whole electronic/techno vibe of the late 90s.
Man I'm feeling pumped!
Good background music for focusing. Don't really think i'd listen to it in any other way.
I remember when I thought this was the most intense, in-your-face shit I had ever heard, and it scared me a little. Now it's just a good electronica album from the 90s--but no one should receive accolades for naming a song "Smack My Bitch Up," in any decade.
I had remembered the first song from somewhere, just by the title. I was ready to not like it. But saw myself feeling it.
Wasn't my kind of thing, but I can appreciate the talent there.
90s big beat electronic music.
Wel goed, maar niet voor ieder moment.
Epic!
Reminds me of being driven around town by my brother in the late 90s. I think this is a pretty good album in a genre I don't really enjoy all that much. Great album cover though... and there was an anniversary reissue where they edited tons more crabs into it?
3.8
Way better than I expected, but it still feels like one of those “you had to be there” albums.
Six months later I come back to this album. Is it good? Maybe. Is it a bit problematic? Yes. Does it remind me of a time and place? Kind of. But I think I came to the prodigy late, perhaps ten years after their 90s peak. So this is a 3.
Not my cup of tea, but I can definitely understand why it was/is so influential for the genre. Had I been driving while listening to this album I would’ve easily gotten a speeding ticket.
Not bad. Basically just feels like action movie soundtrack, which I don't dislike but I'm not like super into.
Never really listened to a full Prodigy album, love a song here or there but otherwise the genre is not quite my cup of tea, still a decent album
Seems like something that would be good as music to an action or racing scene, maybe. Unfortunately, my commute to work was not nearly eventful enough to warrant such an accompaniment.
Felt like I was in a tunnel the whole time with all the fading in and out. Classic 90s indie action movie music.
Would have loved to hear the whole album live
I listened to this album a lot when it was released, but revisiting it now, I realised that it was me trying to be like the cool kids. It's a really good album but it's just not my jam. Climbatize is great, and the L7 cover is fun.
The matrix/you wouldn’t download a car music. Good for workouts but a little repetitive/mindless, personally. Can be lots of fun and a good vibe in the right setting
Catchy and enjoyable in pieces, but 56 minutes is a lot. But at least it’s uptempo. Also lyrically….questionable.
Good stuff but didn't click fully.. Smack My Bitch up is a classic and this listen I really latched onto Narayan. I see the genre influence but if I'm craving some breaks I'd go somewhere else. Another album with the caveat that it could grow on me over time 3/5
Listened to this a lot when I was a student. A little agressive for daily listening but still cool in a pub or so.
*1997. English electronic. *The Prodigy is oddly intriguing and catchy and enjoyable. *Wouldn't listen to this a lot, but would be impressed if someone had it on. *There’s more to this album than smack my bitch up and firestarter. RATING - 6/10
This was never my thing back in the 90s. I was more of an alt-rock kid and this electro stuff never connected with me. So I went into this knowing a little bit of what it was about, and with a certain expectation. And while I would say this still isn't exactly up my alley, I was pleasantly surprised and definitely didn't hate it.
Decently good punk rock
6/10 Ok, so dance wasn't my thing. I get a bit bored by the repetition. Or really bored, actually. However, this album has something that lifts it above most of the rest. It just is so synthetic I can't connect to it.
Standard, this kind of music is what you think of when electronica is mentioned. Favorite track: Smack my bitch up other picks: breathe, narayan, firestarter
Never really bought the band's justification for Smack My Bitch Up. All very 90s edgelord vibes from some twerps purposefully looking to offend with something so lazy and basic while accusing domestic abuse support groups of just not getting it. What a horrible time. Some banging tracks though.
Excellent stuff. Great hits. Probably very new and Wicked for the time when it came out.
Good songs on here but very, very (did I mention very?) repetitive sound. 3/5
This album is like being a 19 year old and going out for a big night on the town. You’re gonna get leery eyed early in the night and hit the Main Street at about 10. Not to go into the pubs though, cos the pubs are dead at 10. You’ll first pass the time by pushing some innocent bystanders, and the eating violence upon anyone who stands up to you. Later on you’ll go to a grungy basement bar playing upbeat music for you to space out on while you’re riding the highs of some random pills that you just took in a dirty toilet stall. Then off for a quick fight outside the kebab store before heading home to sleep on the couch.
a perfect album cover for how i felt listening to this album. sure, a lot of the songs sounded like a 20 second loop stretched over several minutes, and the hard cut off for several songs was kinda jarring, but i'm still out here groovin. bob dylan could never
Still stands up as a very good album nearly 30 years after its release.
immediately very uk sleaze. i can practically hear tony stonem getting up to some nefarious bullshit while this plays. they all sound very similar but not the same. never listened to old electropop before so this is very interesting!
If nothing else, I really like the album cover. That crab is ready to rave. Other than that I didn't love it. It's another one of those "fine for what it is" albums that I didn't personally enjoy too much, but I can see how others would. Not as hard to get through as some other techno on this list, though, so we'll (barely) go with a 3. 2.5
A little bit overwhelming as a whole, still appreciate the concept
-this is an album i’ve known about for a while now and was intrigued by -i listened to Music For The Jilted Generation nearly a year ago after having it pop up on here, and i can honestly say i prefer it to this -once again, not a huge fan of big beat. tho it had some really good songs and must have been super exciting to listen to in the 90s specifically -Favorites are Smack My Bitch Up and Fuel My Fire
Classic '90s album with some huge hits!
Judged purely on how it sounds this is a top tier album. However most, if not all, electronic music is going to have a pretty low ceiling for me due to my distaste for repetitive music. That plus the misogyny penalty leaves this album middle of the pack. Breathe and Mindfields are so awesome though...
Not really a fan of electronic music, but all things considered this is pretty solid stuff. Kinda at the intersection of pump up club bangers and Tony Hawk-esque skateboarding soundtrack. Recognized Kool Keith on Diesel Power, which is cool. Overall though, not really something I'd go back to, but was a pretty good listen. Had a good time being transported back to the late 90s.
So, I am by no means an electronic music conisseuer. Not a hater, just generally not for me with some exceptions. I'm definitely familiar with the hits off this record, because monoculture, but I was never spurred to dig any deeper. To my surprise, I enjoyed this! I absolutely need to be in a particular mood for it, but despite the repetitive nature of this album, it's good. Plus it ends with a sick L7 cover, which I did not expect.
Breathe gets it to a 3.
Odaklanmayıp dinleyince güzel duyuluyor. Şarkıya dikkat edersem rahatsız ediyor. Arabada hızlı gittiğini fark etmek gibi Firestarter güzeldi, Mindfields hackleme şarkısı gibiydi, ama en sevdiğim Climbatize oldu, insan sesi yok, vibelar ve bass var Smack my bitch up iğrençti, amacını yerine getiren bir şarkı. Tüm albüm iğrenç olacak sanmıştım ki değildi Crab
Smack My Bitch Up is just as good as ever, never fails to deliver hype with the great drums and that lovely vocal break in the middle. Didn’t know I knew Breathe until I heard that distinctive hook, unbelievable tune with really interesting noises panned off in the background. Love the suspense in this track with the spooky section near the send before that iconic hook drops back in. Diesel Power is the first time we get more vocals than just a hook, the bars were actually decent, and not what I’m not used to, with the Prodigy I’ve heard previously. It would have been nice for the instrumental to have varied more and been more interesting, but the driving beat and synths serve a purpose. Funky Shit is uninteresting to me, if I heard it in a club I’m sure I would enjoy it very much, but I can’t see myself sticking it on to do the ironing. From this point the album did feel slightly monotonous, very similar drum beats and bloated song lengths with minimal diversion from the main motifs. Tracks would work well in the live setting, no doubt. Firestarter springs us back to life, 5* tune, remember this video hype as fuck on Kerrang back in the day.
1997 is one of my favourite years of music and this is a small part of the reason why. It still feels like an amphetamine laden journey through some sick beats, even if it has aged a bit... Gems: Breathe, Mindfields and Firestarter. (I'm a Basic Bitch, I know)
Made me feel like I was hacking the mainframe in the 90s with fingerless gloves, spiked hair, sunglasses, and goggles on my head
Very divided with this. I’ve seen them live a few times back when Keith was still alive and the energy they brought is absolutely unreal, which is matched in the singles of this album. The rest however was unfortunately underwhelming. Bonus points for the cover though.
I was expecting more of this album. The tracks I knew are great and I'd heard a lot of good things about their live sets, but beyond the singles this didn't really live up to the hype. Three really ones were exciting still, but as the album tracks went on they just didn't have to synth hooks that really make the hits stand out. Then there was one that sounded heavily influenced by a who synth line, which was pretty cool, but then one that felt like they were trying to remake one of the singles again, complete with Asian sounding middle 8. The energy is still pretty high throughout which is good, but I think I'll just be seeking out the hits in the future.
I had no idea Kool Keith was on this album. I thought I was going to like this more than I did. It's very listenable and it's got some cool beats. But it does get a little bit forgettable in the middle. I don't really know the history behind these guys, but I suspect that "real clubbers" back in the day probably thought these guys were a watered down version of the stuff they were listening to.
This is brainless party music, best enjoyed while rolling on ecstasy at a rave in 1995. It's a time capsule of mainstream electronic music 30 years ago, and I still like some of the beats and production.
3.5
30/1001 The Prodigy - The Fat of the Land Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ I've heard the singles from this and very familiar with them. Whilst I appreciate its crossover appeal between rock/metal and dance/techno giving it this abrasive quality. However, this clearly isn't an album for me.
This was okay I didn't get bored so that's a good
Álbum de música eletrônica divertido. CVJ Neko.
Electronic - Less interesting than Fatboy Slim but more interesting than MJ Cole
For an electronic album, it's not the worst. It has a couple of notable songs that are fairly good. Better than most of the electronic stuff on this list. 3/5 Probably won't listen again
There’s some fun tracks here, and it definitely has a purpose, but as an album long listening experience it gets a little old.
They’re calling it the hardest album cover of all time This album, in the right circumstances, is a 5. Could totally see myself on the dance floor completely busting ass to this song. However, under normal circumstances, it’s a 3. There are some real bangers but I struggle to find myself listening to this album on repeat. Definitely a different sound for EDM and I fuck with what The Prodigy did
Kind of fun, actually. Knew 'Firestarter', but had not heard anything else. 'Breathe' is also a standout track for me.
I’d like this album at certain times.
thoughts: “smack my bitch up” and “breathe” is still an insane (but appropriate) 1-2 punch to open the album. a total time capsule of 1990s UK rave culture but outside of the three singles (and the transition from “narayan” into “firestarter”)…eh, hasn’t aged tremendously songs: “smack my bitch up”, “breathe”, “firestarter” rating: 5.4/10
Really good Electronica dance album with hooks, beats, and snarling British late 90's venom. Overstays it's welcome a bit but makes up for it with a great closing track.
I thought Prodigy was a late 90’s whiny metal band. This album was way better than that, but still not good. Middle of the road.
Rating: 6.5/10 Could definitely be rated a lot higher with repeated listens, starts off great but soon enough all of the songs start to blend with each other.
Needs the right time and place
Although this was when they were their biggest, the bubble had already burst for me. Two bloated and ponderous compared to previous albums, and a collaboration with the lead singer of one of my least favourite bands (Kula Shaker) and L7 (who had been cool five years earlier). Very average
Sick beats.
Not my normal listening however I appreciate being exposed to different perspectives and genres
This album pumps. I have misgivings about Smack My Bitch Up though, no matter how you spin it...
Didn’t think I knew anything about The Prodigy, but I definitely knew Smack My Bitch Up (iconic club track) and a couple of others from some dance/electronic playlists. I can appreciate how this album was taking electronic music forward in the 90s. It starts strong, but the songs start feeling really repetitive toward the end. More variety (even just switching up the drum loop, come on) would have helped a lot.
Brought me back to Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, where they used several of these songs. I can see not enjoying this album as much without those memories/framing
Fine for dancing and background music, not great for a close listen. I get why people like it, just not interesting for me.
Felt repetitive
One or two solid tracks but the rest blended together, just not enough substance from this album to make me say “woah”
Decent album but I am tired of techno. The fact that we’ve had this much electronic and yet the only rap albums have been Kanye makes me doubt the quality of this list
Good songs and I did enjoy it. I just don't know when I'll listen to it outside of this list.
Liked it more than I thought I would
molotov bitch is their best song and it didn't even make the album
Loved the crab. Hated the misogyny. Rest of album was okay.
Relentless electronic dance music. This album was super popular at the same time amphetamines made a huge comeback - makes sense.
I liked the vibe at first but got old after a bit. Seemed ahead of its time - good workout music.
This one surprised me, much more enjoyable than I thought it would be!
