Reviews (page 10 of 13)

Album started somewhat strong, then fizzled off into generic 90 dance/techno territory. 3/5

good album but not really my vibe

Not a big fan of EDM, but seems to be a decent album for those that are.

It's okay. I like some of the songs. Bit repetitive for my tastes unless I'm in the mood for that sort of thing. Not into the lyrics of the first song but the beat slaps.

I tend to fall more in the Dance subgenre of Electronica, so this album was fun, and I didn't mind listening to it, but I'll probably only revisit it when I need some music to exercise with. It makes me want to *move*, but that's more the beat and melody than any of the lyrics.

fave- breathe, firestarter

Generally enjoyable. Between a 3 and 4 for me.

Better than I expected.

The disgusting message of “Smack my bitch up” notwithstanding, this was a decent album; not my genre of choice and the concept of that first track is so warped that I wouldn’t choose to listen to it again.

Sounded like a rave backdrop. Pretty repetitive beats but some interesting lyrical choices (also repetitive within the song). Reminded me of chemical brothers? Would fit into the Matrix soundtrack

3 I was a little apprehensive going into this one, but there’s definitely an enjoyable vibe to it. In fact, I found this to be much more accessible than a lot of other club-style electronica and was actually quite enjoying myself as the album kicked off with Smack My Bitch Up, a song that I’m sure has never attracted any kind of known controversy. Breathe was a similar, but excellent follow-up track (and probably my favorite of the album), as was Diesel Power and Funky Shit from there. But that’s really the problem with this album though - things never really change all that much from the same general sound. That wasn’t really a problem at first (once my coffee kicked in, I was plugging away at work to this like I was some sort of 80s sci-fi hacker), but the music - like the caffeine - started losing its hold on me about halfway through the album. After a certain point, I just found myself holding out for Firestarter, a track I’ve seen a lot of people name as the group’s best (and which also requires you to slog through the 9-minute Narayan), but… it just sounded like everything else here? Am I missing something? I mean it’s fine, but it’s nothing special, and it’s definitely no Stand Up, the actual best song by this group - give that a listen if you’re not familiar. It’s a totally different vibe, but much better in the sense that it makes you feel like a badass without feeling like you should also be tweaking on something. (On an opposite note, if you want to hear an abomination, check out Gene Simmons’ cover of Firestarter). If you’re into electronica, I can see why you’d be a fan of this album. As someone who isn’t particularly into the genre, I still would say I liked this more than I disliked it, though not by a ton - the charm of this kind of stuff runs thin quickly with me. Will keep in mind if I’m ever on coke or molly.

Smack My Bitch Up - 8.5/10 Breathe - 7.5/10 Diesel Power - 7.5/10 Funky Shit - 7/10 Serial Thrilla - 7.5/10 Mindfields - 8/10 Narayan - 8/10 Firestarter - 7.5/10 Climbatize - 7.5/10 Fuel My Fire - 8/10 TOTAL - 71/100

Memories of youth.

At first, I liked the video gamey sound but then grew tired of it by the middle of the album

Pioneers of electronic music for years to come. Fuel My Fire was a standout from the album's deep cuts

Fun remembering these guys from my 90 mtv days. Some ok tracks but nothing really great.

Hits are really good. It gets a bit samey by the end.

All sounded like the same song but I kinda liked the song

I don't have too much to say about this album. I was decent enough and a bit nostalgic for me.

First song lyrics and title are not good. Although it is high energy I fell asleep during it last night. Its not amazing but it was one of the first electronic albums so needs some respect.

Big fan of all they do but overall on this list I’m trying to figure out where this lands. It’s formative for the genre and one of the largest successes commercially but is it great? 3.5/5

Smack my 3 stars up.

Is this trance music? I don’t hate it. There were some good hooks. I don’t think smackin’ bitches is ok to do anymore, thankfully. I shared it with Selim and he loved it, as expected. 2.7

Was going to skip, but listened anyway. Ended up liking it a lot more than expected. Nearly 30 yrs later, it still goes hard. Prodigy is a pioneer of big beat - crazy. 3.5

just not my taste. too noisy

I'm blown away by how hard this production hits given its age. I often find that older stuff (especially metal and electronic) lacks the bite of modern production, but this has it. The bass is thick, and everything sounds big af.

4 gode gamle klassikere. Ellers litt litt mye rap og litt lite fengende?

Very vibey reminds of music my Dad would play a lot

Lots of amen beat adjacent british electric music. Sorta industrial. Sirta samey. Tight A-rab singin indian chanting sometimes. Best 1,2, 10

Iconic sounds

I got this on vinyl when it came out -- not for the hits, but for "Climbatize."

If you seen the crab dance, you will see it in your brain on almost every song. That being said, most of them are kind of meh to me. at a time, especially funky shit pretty fun to dance to if you were out but otherwise I would never put this album on. I mean I would never put this album on lol.

Never heard of this before! Crab rave! Goes on too long but good.

I saw the Prodigy at the big day out. Their best songs came from this album. Not totally my bag, but a classic nonetheless

Looping sample music - kinda makes you angry.

Ups and downs, some tunes are really catchy, some I didn't care for at all. I can see why it was innovative and overally enjoyed it but wouldn't make it a regular listen

Goes hard at times but some songs get way too repetitive, alright for zoning out too but boring to actively listen. Best parts of the album are when there's actually lyrics.

I feel like I was transported into scene in a crime drama tv episode from the early 2000s when they show the characters doing quotidian tasks with no dialogue.

Another prodigy album, it's not bad - but prodigy is prodigy.

Some tracks are great but listening to the entire record is rather onerous

Sonically incredible. Some songs are a bit long.

Hard hitting big beat/DnB techno with a charismatic lead singer and a band kind of feel that got it out of the rave and onto the radio like few others from the genre. At times it verges into NIN industrial territory but clubbier. Too long and a bit samey as an hour-long album, but the hits, Breathe especially, are great - catchy hooks, head-banging synth riffs, distinctive snarled vocals, and tension/release build ups & drops, and some big bass booms. Surpringly good as a getting stuff done on the computer album.

Strong entry from Prodigy, but not my favorite DJ record. Strong track listings i clude Smack My Bitch Up, Diesel Power, and Serial Thrilla

These hour long electronic albums are killers. Would love to know why there are multiple on the list. Still, I think I’m more upset at the list makers than the artist here. This is ok.

i'm not normally an electronic music person but, yeah, this was pretty fun. i went into this feeling pretty cynical as most electronic albums i've run into so far have been really not my thing, but i was pleasantly surprised by this. engaging throughout and fun to listen to.

very 90s firestarter was catchy

Liked a few of the songs

Whatcha listenin' to, Bobby?

Really like the album cover. Music was fine for an electronic type album.

Sounds almost like a parody in retrospect. Snooty and fun. Terrible remixes on the deluxe/remastered edition though, wow.

Smack My Bitch Up is a banger, transition at 3:00 is very nice. Breathe's bassline is slick. Some of the samples can come off as harsh in treble area. Diesel Power is good but not enough to make it onto a regular playlist Funky Shit doesn't appeal to me all that much. Serial Thrilla would be better imo if the mixing had vocals louder and the base volume lower. Transition at 3:10ish and the transition into mindfields were classy. Mindfields is the first song that does not feel like it comes in immediately swinging which is a nice change especially after serial thrilla. Narayan is catchy but should be like 3 minutes shorter; last bit of transition into Firestarter is good Firestarter is classic Prodigy to me; love that shit Climbatize feels harsh but fits that 70/80's electro house feel. Bass and beat is very good from 1:30 on; again could probably be shortened by a minute or more on both sides. Fuel My Fire is good but not being added to my regular playlists. Just too much noise/static. Overall mixing on the album is like a 3/5. Not very high dynamic range, tracks seem to blend together even on good headphones and the volume of vocals consistently seems too low for me. Music itself is something I dig. 3/5

okk 6/10

shoutout tecno

This album has some hypnotically intense songs on it. This is probably the most commercial and mainstream big beat music ever got. And most of the real highlights are those couple of singles that got really popular. But there are some other deep cuts like Serial Thrilla that I enjoy. The problem is that with a genre like this, you don't really have a verse chorus structure to keep your song moving forward. And so these songs often mosey around the same melodies and rhythms. That translates into some of these songs being too long, and not justifying being as long as they are. Narayan probably doesn't need to be over 9 minutes long. if they trimmed some of the fat, this album might be better. I'm also not a fan of the UK Hip Hop type of rapping on some of the songs. Considering the vocal parts are usually just the same lines repeated over and over again, they become slightly annoying after a while. Rating: 6/10

in general not a fan of like rave music or whatever that is... but it is solid to be fair

Not my thing but didn’t dislike it. Already knew Firestarter, also quite liked Narayan.

i could definitely see myself raving to this music but i might mix it first.

3.1. The album goes for too long, all scungy UK rave techno does, but the singles are still bangers.

Bit heavy for me, but I can see why it's in the 1000 list

I hate giving ratings. A democratic 3 for everybody :)

Classic and iconic album from the Prodigy. Never fails to boost the energy levels, great dance album. Can't help it to rave along with the crab from the album artwork. This album is a must to listen through your headphone as it has quite some pending with sounds travelling "through" your brain. Favourite songs: Smack My Bitch Up, Breathe & Firestarter Bonus points for me (accidentally) playing firestarter on the highway while driving past a car that was going up in flames.

It wasn’t what I wanted but appeared to be what I needed on this Wednesday morning. The album cover took me back to my school days…and I remember watching the video for fire starter on top of the pops and being scared by Keith. Bless him.

Not so bad, popular music

I do love this album, but I can only listen to it once before the bears become repetitive. Therefore I’m only giving it 3 stars, since it’s not repeatable. Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: probably not Favourite Song: Serial Thrilla

Vibey project that reminds me heavily of dnb and could have possibly been a precursor to modern dnb and EDM in general

Passables Elektroalbum

Very cool. Electro dance metal. Such matrix. Very Neo. Wow.

I need this band in small doses. Great for playlists, not for albums. Best track: Smack My Bitch Up

20% bangers, creative Intros and energetic beats. Too little variation for average 6 minutes.

Pretty good.

You know, I could actually get into some of it.

Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: Yes! This is a classic and not much will age like this has Favourite song: Track 8 - Firestarter

Smack my bitch up, firestarter and breathe get a star each for nostalgia.

It was alright but nothing special

3/5. Fun little album that used plenty of percussion-esque instrumentation to build the tone of this record. I found the early few songs to be quite fun with the later songs a bit of filler.

A bit heavy but I liked it! Love the combo between rock and electronic music and weird sounds. 3,0

I really like “Firestarter” but the rapping on the song has always been sort of a negative for me. The same goes for the full album— it’s just kind of hard to ignore and it sounds very goofy. Also I like the original “Fuel My Fire” and it was a little frustrating to listen to it in this form.

It was good. But two prodigy albums in this list had me skeptical.

A deranged, highly energetic and addictive rave/electro album from the late 1990s. The production of the album is top class. In small doses this record is entertaining, but as an almost 1-hour long album I've found it quite exhausting. Musically it is also quite repetitive.

This could grow on me even more over time. Not something I'd listen to normally but really decent. I will give it a 3 for now, but its on the borderline of a 4

some good songs and sounds but overall most of it sounds about the same. none of the hard hitting electronic sounds of modern electronic music

My favourite thing about 'The Fat Of The Land' is the fact ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ samples the Ultramagnetic MC’s, and that better yet Kool Keith features on ‘Diesel Power’. Aside from this and the obvious hits we all know and love, the rest of the album hasn’t really aged all that well, which is a shame.

some pretty good beats & riffs, they don’t have to try too hard i’m a bit of a sucker for this kind of thing

ik this is supposed to be really good but i feel like i’ve heard shit like this before and it’s kinda mid

I only really know the hits from this album. I have memories of listening to Prodigy at Leeds festival and the crowd going crazy. It wasn’t a pleasant experience and unfortunately the songs mostly remind me of that. The album as a whole felt quite “samey”. Despite my thoughts the album was incredibly successful according to Wikipedia and is now an essential 90s album I do remember one of the music videos was very entertaining. Possibly Smack My Bitch Up?

On first listen, I thought it sounded like music from an action scene in the Matrix or a "doing science" montage in CSI (TV show). Turns out they did have a song on the Matrix soundtrack. It's not bad music at all, I'd just rather hear it in a movie rather than sitting down and listening to a full album of it. Favorite track: Breathe

I liked this more than Music for the Jilted Generation

Not really my vibe but fine.

I hated this on release, mainly teenage stubbornness as I preferred their rave stuff and thought Firestarter was really weak compared to the Atari Teenage Riot and gabber techno I was listening to. Don't mind this now, Firestarter sounds much better sequenced in the album and Diesel Power with Kool Keith makes me wish Liam Howlett produced a full hip hop album rather than the depreciating returns they went into after this

"Smack My Bitch Up" So those are the lyrics. Who knew?

Some interesting sounds but every song is 3 minutes too long, you need to be on some kind of mind altering substance to enjoy it

File under Need for Speed music

90s Brit Electronic music. What does that evoke for you? That sound you heard in your head is this album. It's fine!

Back to back albums by this group wasn’t great, but I did like this one a bit more than the other. I enjoyed their big singles, one of which I even recognized. My husband told me a bit about why they are noteworthy and I liked learning that trivia.

Never been a big fan, but never actively hated listening to them. Reminds me of high school.

The three singles are excellent, Funky Shit is pretty fun, and Narayan is a low key banger (I’m also a big fan of how it transitions into Firestarter). Unfortunately I just don’t really care for the rest of the album - it’s fine while it’s on but doesn’t draw me in, and some of the songs (including ones I enjoy) are just wayyy too long without enough development to justify it imo

A little dated, and not as good overall as Jilted Generation but it's got some bops.

Production quality is really good, wasn’t a fan of the songs.

Once "Smack My Bitch Up" has finished (what were they thinking?) I can listen to this great album

Reminds me of a 90s indie movie chase scene. Actually really good album to run to. Consistently engaging but potentially one-note. 3/5

I am a fire starter, i wicked firestarter

its cute

This is not my preferred type of music, but this was pretty enjoyable.

Imagine a gang of crabs had a shipping business... In space and had quite an adventure delivering their items. That's what this album essentially reflects.

Genuinely annoyed that I find myself kinda enjoying this. Favorite track: Diesel Power

kim possible ahh beat. nse me gusto pero me cuesta tomarmelo enserio y me da risa enbola x eso me gusto mas xd. 6.5/10

good electronic sound. don't like some of the cursing lyrics

This really is of its time. Feels a bit dated now, and if Smack My Bitch up felt weird then it sounds pretty horrible now. Much of it is one-paced and samey, but there are still some bangers to enjoy, especially Firestarter and best song, Breathe.

Pretty kewl

This might as well be an album of fire starter remixes apart from a couple of tracks but I like it

This is a rave & that's cool. I like Climbatize. Also Breathe.

This album reminds me of the good old days of the internet where I definitely did not use the Pirate Bay and I would definitely not have downloaded a car if I could. 2 point for techno. 3 points for nostalgia. 1 point for reminding me of the, “YOU WOULDN’T DOWNLOAD A CAR,” commercial. 6/10

Listened to some of it, but I've heard it many times before. Decent album with some good EDM tracks, a little rough on the ears though

Already listened

Drum n'bass potente y con ritmo. Más de un tema muy explotado en su momento. Música tecno y con ritmos repetitivos

A bit too jazzy for 7am

I purchased this, maybe 20 (?) years ago, and was quite surprised that I did. It didn't really fit with a lot of what I was listening to at the time. Credit the disposable income, I guess. I could count on one hand how many times I listened to it all the way through. I grew tired of it quickly, and just never felt the need to invest time into it. Loved tracks 1 and 2, but I wasn't into hip hop then and once Diesel Power popped up, I skipped ahead...probably straight to Firestarter. My loss a little bit, but not a lot. I'm glad I gave it a full listen now. Really good stuff. Narayan is awesome...love the chanting section just past the midpoint. These songs are fun on their own, but I may never play the whole album through again. 1 = bad 2 = average 3 = good 4 = great 5 = outstanding

Pretty okay

Great for the genre. 3.5/5

This was decent electronic music and I liked it well enough. Not much stuck out about it, although it did have an interesting metal attitude to it. And I love the cover.

This was okay, but I had hoped it would be better. I got kind of bored...to the point that I stopped listening about half way through and then forgot to finishing listening until the next day.

I didn’t enjoy this nearly as much as Music for a Jilted Generation. Some good beats but I think that filled my The Prodigy quota.

Pumpin'

Ahead of its time, lots of great moments but sort of overstays its welcome

It was alright at the time.

Definitely a hard sell for me because of genre. But I still liked it!

It’s boring enough for me. Despite on several bangers listening to the entire album in a row is not easy.

Though it is not my style/taste, I can appreciate the production or the energy. I'm sure other persons than me will find many things to enjoy about it.

I love EDM, and a couple tracks on this album are fantastic, namely “Breathe” and “Firestarter” but overall I find the album to be lackluster.

Destijds ging ik hier heel hard op, maar nu ben ik er toch wel op uitgeluisterd. Sowieso zou ik dit thuis niet zo snel opzetten uit vrije wil

A little boring but OK-ish Prodigy album, which was pretty disappointing at the time - liked the first two Prodigy albums quite a bit more.

When this album came out, I was disappointed and thought it was much weaker than Music for the Jilted Generation. After listening today I still feel the same. There are a few great tracks on this, but overall, the tone doesn't feel quite right.

A little blunt, I favour the Jilted Generation.

Laute, elektronische punkige müllhalden-flair Musik

Not a bad album at all, but unfortunately this is a project that I'm not crazy about.

cool. not my fav but def not bad.

I like a few songs of this but I can’t give it the listen it deserves right now. It doesn’t fit into my daily routine. Studying in it feels like im about to mash aderall

It was alright. Average to me

Fire singles, the rest is fine.

It’s whatever, like it’s enjoyable but I’ll never listen to it again

Nose, eso

Some good songs but some just don’t click with me

i like the bum tss bum tss beep boop music

You can feel the energy coming from just about every song. But after the first three or four songs, it did feel kind of monotonous. Having "Firestarter" (the big hit?) later in the album was kind of interesting. Drum 'n bass can only get you so far, really. There has to be some variety here. The album was high energy, but an hour of it? Kind of exhausting.

What can you say about an album that starts with a song called "Smack My Bitch Up"? Insert eye roll emoji. Still, it's definitely a fun listen. I don't know that I'd go out of my way to seek it out, but I'd definitely listen again. Favorite tracks: SMBU (minus the lyrics - cool groove), Breathe (very cool dark sound), Mindfields, Firestarter (total earworm). Least favorite track: Serial Thrilla - the beginning and ending sound effects made me think something was wrong with my computer. Not cool. I docked a point just for that.

You need to listen to this album as you walk through a city and it slowly drops rain at night. It is a much better experience. Listening through kinda shitty headphones also helps. All in all, this feels like a worse Chemical Brothers album. I like it, but it's not the best electro-grunge I've heard. Best Songs: Smack My Bitch Up, Funky Shit, Mindfields, Narayan Worst Songs: Breathe, Diesel Power, Serial Thrilla

This album is so much fun!

Nostalgic and undeniably a good album.... although not my genre of choice usually! Update: every time a song from this album appears on my playlist, I skip it.... This tells me it's not for me. Going to a 3

I liked some of their songs on this but I would definitely have to be in the mood to listen to it.

Real, high-octane party music. Can’t really listen to a lot of it.

Catchy but too repetitive. Electronic music is fine but personally it's not my cup of tea. I'm not sure what it did to include itself on the 1001 list, but I think it's because for its time period it was futuristic.

Time to Rave! Classic 90's techno. Good for cruising.

not bad, but too repetitive. Mild disappointment, but I should revisit

Goes on for too long, but has some great songs.

Kameron’s favorite but not me

A sensational hit in Firestarter - check! Influential legacy - check! Excellent crab on the album cover - check! Yet there is something about this album that fails to lift it, IMHO, to the level of similar albums from the same era (say, Chemical Brothers). It sounds too much as if they use the same synth program throughout the album.

Not my cup of tea.

Very fun tracks, a little repetitive but I could see myself having a good time partying to these. I want to take all the samples from this album and put them on a board and get high as shit in the woods pressing buttons lmao. Not something I would listen to regularly, but a fun experience for a specific mood. Favourite Tracks: Diesal Power, Firestarter

There’s a few songs on this album that I recognize from growing up in the 90s (Smack My Bitch Up) that brought some nostalgia. Admittedly, that’ll make me a bit bias. Overall a fun listen. They definitely made some cool sounds. Next time I wanna travel back to the 90s and hack computers in a shitty flat in Berlin I’m gonna bring a copy of this album and a bag of speed.

forgot how much hip hop sound there is in this album

Instantly recognisable and still sounds massive. A little bit dated and verging on caricatureish in 2022, although that could be because this album and the Prodigy sound are so well known and iconic. Some of the song titles are puntastic (Serial Thrilla, Mindfields, Climbatize). Given the wordplay and fact that 25 years have passed, is this now music for the Countdown generation? Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Firestarter Date listened: 02/08/22

I got this for my thirteenth birthday, because everybody in school had gotten it. After about a week, I was standing in the kitchen, holding the album in my left hand and and an orange in the other. I decided to give juggling a go, and threw the orange up in the air. I had forgotten I was holding the album when I reached out to catch my orange. The orange (quite a hard orange) neatly snapped the album in two. I had to tape a mate's copy that he himself had taped off my copy. Such adolescent idiocy is fitting for The Fat of the Land, a lit bottom burp of an album. This is an album that convinced itself that PS1-era Tomb Raider was a good game solely because of Lara Croft's pointy norks. The shiniest example of its immaturity actually occurs on the sleevenotes, where they quote Goering's guns-not-butter speech, simply because they thought it sounded cool. But the most notorious instance is Smack My Bitch Up, a tabloid-baiter of a title. Sampling a couplet from an Ultramagnetic MCs track (the rapper in question, Kool Keith, raps on The Fat of the Land's Diesel Power), by focusing on the phrase "smack my bitch up" the Prodigy giftwrapped a controversy for the tabloids, who got double-bubble from both the Prodigy's popularity and infamy. In response to the artificial furore, the video to smack My Bitch Up was a first-person view of someone drinking, doing cocaine, eating a kebab, groping women, fighting, using one of those smack heroin needles, stealing a car and bedding a stripper, and at the end it turns out, gasp!, it was a woman doing all that beastly naughtiness! I presume you've heard of GTA. I also presume that you know GTA is one of the most financially successful works in any medium. I also presume you know that the visceral impact of GTA has lessened to that of a flea in an oven glove (do you know the boundary they're crossing for the next installment? A female protagonist! Quick, I need a smelling salt suppository!). The outrage The Prodigy courted was always a joke, as they knew and as everybody who objected knew, along with everybody who didn't care. The Prodigy appeared mature when you were in school, the first year of uni at a push. Do you know what you happened to start listening to the first year at uni? Bob Dylan. Tell me what's more mature: The Fat of the Land or Blood on the Tracks? Still, I'm not one to discount the moments when I crave the teenage charms of slasher flicks and masturbating over ridiculously overimplanted bososms, so I can't damn The Fat of the Land. Hell, I firmly accept that Firestarter is one of the great UK number 1s (a while ago, I was in a pub, and it turned out the youth next to me by the bar was born after Firestarter topped the charts; that's as sobering as a grey pubic hair). But everyone who's held a job will tell you: The Fat of the Land is a slightly above average album that got horrendously overpraised by people hoping it'd usher in a new punk rock, blinding themselves to the fact that the album signified nothing but flash sound and furious beats. Liam Howlett, the one in The Prodigy who actually did all the bastard music, said the ultimate defence of Smack My Bitch Up and all the other controversies was that it was meant to be dumb, akin to preferring Flavor Flav to Chuck D. In fairness, I think that defence holds up. Still, it means that the music's dumb.

Maybe it’s so influential it retrospectively sounds like something I’ve heard before?

It does have some fun tracks on it. As a whole album it wears thin after a while though. I actually prefer a few of their more recent tracks

Not usually what I listen to, but it's exciting, heart pounding and terrific beats. Lots of energy!

it isn’t horrible, but not my favorite album ever.

A bit unfair to judge a dancefloor album off a first listen sitting here in the office, but this one still delivered for the most part. Even if there's not a lot of rhythmic variation within each track, there's enough across the whole LP to keep things moving and decently interesting. Wish there was a stronger melodic presence here, this group usually leans toward sparser DnB/breakbeat arrangements but has a great ear for catchy progressions.

This album gives me some high-precision nostalgia; makes me want to Hack the Planet. I kind of hate what they done to my beloved L7 with their Fuel My Fire cover.

Owned this one and got played fairly often, more metal and single driven than previous stuff. It was good to listen to it again but I seriously doubt I'll ever do it again.

Better than I anticipated, but kind of repetitive. Also, and this has been said for many of the records, probably better in a club setting.

I had this album in high school, just like everyone my age had this album in high school. It's pretty good late 90s techno, and one that I would put on again if I was in the right mood. But that mood won't come around very often.

I love Firestarter, but there's only so many times you can put the same track on the same album.

Reminds me of my teen years. Breathe is still a brilliant tune.

Thought I'd know more on this than I did but in saying that my Prodigy knowledge is limited to the best of. Breathe is phenomenal, always loved the opening riff. The other singles were also great. Not many new stand out tracks for me though. Funky Shit was good. Diesel power split me. Really liked the music but the vocal didn't fit. Not sure if it was a guest vocalist or something but it felt like a missed opportunity and didn't fit with the rest of the album. After a lot of lot of listens I'm going a harsh 3/5.

I hated these guys back in the day. It was because they were the poster kids for the whole Electronica is going to take over. It didn’t, and I like it more now. Those two data points are unrelated.

Never thought of myself as someone who liked Prodigy and yet I remember listening to several of these tracks fairly often in the 90s and still liked them today...so going middle of the road as there were a few here that went on forever like Narayan but Firestarter, Smack My Bitch Up, Diesel, Climbatize and Breathe are all solid tracks. I would go 3.5 but this is solid stars and 4 seems a little too strong for me

Aggressive - expressive - Nice one

Genre: Big Beat 3/5 The 2nd of 2 Prodigy albums in this book, The Fat of the Land is no Music for the Jilted Generation, an album that was forward thinking and predictive. Fat of the Land rests on the same sort of laurels that Fatboy Slim albums do. Because The Prodigy is a great producer, he doesn't necessarily have to go 100% every trach. The albums have their bangers, but then there's about 50 minutes of the rest: okay-to-decent techno songs. Music for the Jilted Generation was a very, very good electronic record, that really did help set the table for a much broader techno movement as a whole. This album here, The Fat of the Land, has Smack My Bitch Up and Funky Shit, but in between not too much to write home about (Firestarter is not bad). Great workout music, and could even suffice as easy listening to some of those who enjoy heavier techno music, but fails to reach the mark of its predecessor. Decent, though.

le gros crabe du pays un peu répétitif bien qu'il soit efficace pour les matinées difficiles

The only song I new from this - Firestarter - was on Jock Rock 2000, which I listened to many times as a teen. What's so tiresome about this album is that every song is basically that same song in a slightly different form. Rounding up to 3 stars instead of down to 2, solely because of nostalgia.

This is light years ahead of "Music for the Jilted Generation" in terms of sequencing/pacing, song structures, and having a more consistent tone/identity - but still not my thing.

Definitely that Fatboy Slim 90s era electronic dance music vibe... it didn't age very well for me, but it isn't "bad". Also their excuse for "Smack My Bitch Up" is laughable.

Add a star for the album cover, and the Indian bits in the first track.

I had this at the time; I sold it (when that was a thing!) because The Prodigy just felt like one-trick ponies, with very little muscle behind their aggressive sound. Now, the singles (Smack My Bitch Up, Firestarter) just feel quaint and cute and kind of funny. But I was surprised at the depth of the rest of the album, there are some decent tracks on here, especially the Crispian Mills collab. Which is something I never thought I'd say!

It was promising after the first track but there’s no sense of variation in dynamic. It remains a testosterone driven rave scene album which is great if you’re at a rave. There’s not much of substance here which is fine for what it is. It’s fun, driving, and clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously.

3, this reminds me of the matrix

An album manifesto that in practice acts as a link between different genres from ambient to heavy metal. The album's greatest weakness is: every second of music is absolutely banal in its context. Prodigy gives the listener exactly what they expect. Triviality has its merits, especially in the field of dance music. (6/10) FT: Breathe

Great album, takes me back. Firestarter and Breathe both stupendous.

Great album, takes me back. Breathe is an awesome track, as is Firestarter.

Not an enormous fan.

hjólatónlist

The land sure was fat. 3.5/5

Diferente a lo mucho que he escuchado. No es la gran cosa (no le presté mucha atención.), mas no es algo nefasto

This made me want to boot up my PS1 and play Need for Speed.

‘Electropunk’ is a good description. Such a long way from the early Prodigy - which I grew up with & still prefer. The drums & bass are phenomenal -breaks and bass bombs - as ever with the Prodigy but the vocals & lyrics don’t work for me to me this sounds commercial, American, too metal for me. Fucking mental live though, which is the point. I remember I had this on CD & after listening to it you feel a bit plastic / seedy. This has not aged well. The Crispian Mills song is terrible. I like the tracks without lyrics ‘Climbatize’.

This is sort of up my alley but I honestly thought it was just mids. Not awful but not really special either.

Nou… maar eens proberen dan…?

I like that this album doesn't sound like what I've normally heard as dance electronica or whatever the correct category might be called. Has some interesting elements from other genres like rock, metal, rap, and so on. The music is entirely sampled, so it's interesting for me to think about how to relate to the creative aspects of this kind of music. Instead of my usual approach of listening for each instrument and the vocals at times all as one musical expression and at other times layer-by-layer for each element. It's good for me to do this exercise. Back to the album: well-produced and mixed, and has some catchy moments.

tecno punk com batidas mais interessantes do que os vocais.

At some point in the 90s they (MTV, the music industry) stopped calling techno "techno" and started calling it "electronica." I don't know if anybody calls it that anymore but when I hear that word this is the album that pops into my head. I don't think is because this is some kind of pinnacle of the genre but I do remember it being a pretty big deal and it's a pretty fun example of late 90s techno music.

It reminded me of that Pere Ubu album in the way that there's sounds clashing. Although I liked this one more. A lot of the music was pleasing to hear, even amidst all that chaotic noise.

grimy, yet satisfying 3

Got me pumped for work. I dig it

Meh meh

Bad trip man

ret fedt 90'er

You: based on your ratings '90s electronica is your least favorite genre so far. Also you: here's more '90s electronica.

Second listen. Growing on me. Enjoying the drum beats. 3/5

A psycho made this. Funky rap-techno.

Liked it better than Fatboy Slim. Too long.

Sounds that I had never thought I would hear in my lifetime were available here. It was definitely a ride worth remembering. The songs that struck me the most were "Breathe", "Diesel Power" and "Climbatize".

I see they’ve made their album again

Not really my style, but also a little hypnotic. Listened to at work and I was definitely dozing off

Doesn't hold up as well compared to some of its contemporaries but from a time and space perspective it would've been absolutely mind blowing

Ahh memories.

5/10. I love the cover art, and how confusingly it clashes with the title. Sadly the music sounds a bit like something a 12 year old would have as the background for their minecraft tutorial youtube video. Found myself liking it okay on the whole, at it was decent as background music, but wouldn't want to listen to it actively

It was at least a little exciting. Still don't love electronic music though. 5/10

not much an industrial electronic fan, but this was easier listening than expected. Feels good for the list, even if it's not my stuff. Cover made me think of rave crabs.

I'll add an extra star for nostalgia's sake, but this album suffers from tracks that are 3 minutes too long, and lyrics that are 25 years past their expiration date.

Gnarly, loud and in your face.

Positive vibe

A ovo je vibe, ovo kad se pusti, glava radi sam tak. Dost dobar album, najbolji njihov.

Big fat beats, but the best part of the album is the cover. Crab looks ready to throw down.

I would call this an easy record to enjoy, but it doesn't give me anything that I am hurting to come back to either.

Jammin

It’s really hard to come back from “smack my bitch up”

Love the Prodigy. Pretty good album on the whole, though some tracks are definitely not as good as others and make the album a bit worse on the whole.

Pretty decent album, although a lot of the songs do sound alike.

Some great tunes on here, Breathe, Firestarter and Smack my bitch up to name a few. Not exactly my scene though.

What a great industrial album, love the classic dance anthems, hated the lyrics of smack a bitch though and wasn't too fond of the rapping song.

Its a unique sound of drum and bass techno electronic music combined with lyrics shouted over it, it's not bad but not my taste sadly

funky and something new!

Alright album some good songs not an album I would sit down and listen to, would rate the album higher if played in a club when I was drunk but other than that not my type of music 3/5

Techno’s never really been my thing but I did find this fairly enjoyable. Made me feel like I should be hacking something.

Definitely not in my wheelhouse, and for that very reason I was happy to listen to this again - I remember 20 years ago playing video games with a friend and we'd loop this album. Perfect for racing games btw. At any rate as one who grew up definitely more of a "traditionalist" this ordinarily wouldn't be something i liked but oddly enough I do; on the tracks where there are vocals it's a little off-putting but not enough to distract from the head-bobbing electronic loops and catchy as hell beats - . (contrasting with the Fatboy Slim album I listened to a week ago which was unlistenable to me) Absolutely not an album for all settings :) but as I'm working while listening to this, it's really kind of the perfect soundtrack. Now I wish I still had my Playstation NASCAR game to veg out to... 6/10 3 stars

Up tempo album with good tracks

Not my type of songs, but I liked it better than I expected

Not as good as I remembered, maybe I needed to be wrecked listening to it ;)

I like several of the songs well enough, but the whole thing sounds like the soundtrack to a drug addiction montage in a movie before everything gets bad.

Got to be in the mood for this one but a classic

Smack My Bitch Up is such a banger of a track, incredible intro. There's some fun tracks on here, but in general they feel pretty formulaic and tends to become pretty one note for me. If you're in the mood could see it but not something I'd return to regularly. Had heard this before.

I like it more then when it came out but it's still at times a bit too heavy and cold for my taste. I forget to give this band credit for more than just Fireststarter. Songs like Narayan do some pretty cool things with that basic breakbeat.

Only really like a couple of the songs.

Never got the Prodigy but can appreciate the hooks. After a strong start the 2nd half tails off a bit

Fairly decent hard British EDM with some dodgy lyrics.

This was a really fun album. I always enjoy an electronic non lyric type of album and this had some good songs that reminded me a bit of Jet Set Radio Future or some old type of video game. Some were strange but seeing that crab on the album cover made it all worth it.

Not my thing but it’s okay

Good listens.

Immer noch nicht ganz meines

Crab music. When I hear Prodigy I think of the late rapper from Mobb Deep. This is NOT that Prodigy. I knew as soon as I heard the first song that this was late '90s; it's the same laser-specific techno/rock style that gave us Darude - Sandstorm. Definitely enjoyable as a relic of that era. This is the kind of music I'd put on while hacking into the mainframe. Favorite tracks: Firestarter, Breathe, Smack My Bitch Up. Album art: Iconic. I've never heard this before and never heard anything from this band, but I've seen the crab cover a billion times and know it well. Even if I hadn't seen it before, it's legitimately a badass picture. The motion blur is insane. 3.5/5

Fun album. Some classic big beat songs. 7/10

Big beats are best, get high all the time

nice. nothing I didn’t expect. 3.5 🦀

Another icon of my mid-90s MTV era, and of course The Matrix soundtrack. Again though not really my thing.

trance and almost dance like beats - fun coding music

This album is filled with a lot of highs and a lot of lows. Tracks like "Smack My Bitch Up", "Firestarter" and "Funky Shit" are really iconic, and this was really the moment when electronic music crossed over with metal and it gets you hype. But the album also has a lot of tracks that feel like filler also and just don't stick with you at all. The album art is the absolute fucking best tho.

Standard british electronic music. Too bad the only the cover had crab rave.

Bom, gostava na época.

Breathe, Smack my bitch up och firestarter berättigar platsen i boken.

Pretty good as far as dance music goes

Good background music for work. Never been a huge rave guy, so this was just ... fine, I guess. Love the energy, but it all kind of bled together after a while. Favorite tracks: "Breathe", "Climbatize"

12/15 Hard beats, very 90s, similar to the Chemical Brothers album. Standout Tracks: Smack My Bitch Up, Funky Shit, Serial Thrilla, Narayan, Firestarter, Fuel My Fire

Not really my thing, but so many good memories of learning to drive in my ex’s purple convertible and blasting this cd with the top down

I have a really annoying coworker whose favorite band is the Prodigy so I was not excited for this one. After giving it a listen I can now confirm it is annoying coworker music.

did not like it, didn’t make it past the fourth song

I've never heard of The Prodigy, and if I'm lucky, I'll forget I ever heard of them.

The Crap of the Land.

not my type of music but was an interesting listen 3/10

boring

Got old quick

Narayan was okay but I had no interest in the rest of it. 2 stars or D-.

Not my thing! I can see how influential they were but doesn't do it for me.

Brings back so many bad memories of crap music in its imperial phase in the 90s. Thank god I was too busy with young kids and babies to worry that I was missing out. For my this is largely unlistenable.

Not his best

5/10 No me disgusto, pero meh

Whatever mood you need to be in to enjoy this is elusive to me at the moment.

makes me feel like i'm in the matrix, but in a bad way.

too much for me

Man this one is a blast from the past. I used to love Firestarter. But I totally forgot about Smack My Bitch Up, what the hell? Who thought that was a god idea? The 90s were a different time I guess. But I mean there are still countless hip hop records made and applauded today with basically (or exactly...) the same lyrics so maybe we haven't changed all that much. I would imagine that was done to be intentionally controversial. I mean the band said that you aren't a fan if you take it literally (or something like that) but there are only 6 words in that song so how exactly is it hard to interpret? I was actually surprised how much of this I remembered. It was pretty much played everywhere for a while but looking back at it now it's definitely aged poorly, to my ears at least. Repetitive, droning, monotonous, all the worst parts of house music. Vocals are laughable on most tracks. I can see teenagers in the 90s just loving this though, I knew a lot that did. I wasn't much of a fan then, less so now. 1.5/5

Cool but like who can listen to this for more than 10 mins without getting utterly annoyed

Listened Before? Y I had this one back in the day. It's no better now than it was back then. It's just noise. Firestarter is a banger. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist:

Feel like I'm on the set of the British movie Human Traffic

Pointless

Anxiety in an audio file.

So does every electronic dance dub album sound like them, or do they sound like every electronic dance dub album? I don’t know. I don’t care.

Whole album sounds like songs they play in transitions of old tv shows.
