Reviews (page 11 of 13)
This album is not subtle, not elegant, and not interested in being tasteful.
rap, so not my genre
Pretty unforgetable and nothing special, except that album cover, I’m loving that.
Fell asllep
Sounds like the soundtrack to the X games or something.
I knew three songs on this: Smack My B**** Up, Breathe, and Firestarter. I'm not a big fan of electronic music. The songs I knew were fine, but the rest got to be kind of long and samey sounding.
I’m very overstimulated feels like I’m watching old school mtv skateboarding videos or kids getting arrested in 90s mashups
This was nice background music if you dont want to have a serious thought in your mind. Don't have a favorite song because they all sounded the same.
Completely fine background noise but did not Fuel My Fire in any way.
This sounds like the music that played on the intro of an early 2000’s Cinemax soft core porno movie. Which is sick at times but eventually it runs its course.
I did not do enough ket to properly enjoy this. Or actually any ket, which is probably a requirement. It's club music, but it's at least...somewhat interesting club music? I don't like it though.
I've been listening to a lot of weird techno subgenres lately so this seemed even more boring than I remember from 97.
Meh, this was not for me in the 90s and it still isn't today.
🫤
Trashy. Nicely punchy. Bouncy. But not catchy. Annoying, sparse vocals. Compressed. Feels like the sort of thing you'd hear behind a weird, morphing, edgy cartoon montage in the 2000s. Listenable. There's competent rapping on some (only one?) of these! This is much cooler than the more trance-like, rave-y repeating ones. Very much like Fatboy Slim (same genre/period), but crunchier than what I've heard. Transitions between songs! Badass! But all rather one-note sonically. Standouts: Diesel power (rapping), mindfields (trippy beat), climbatize (cool rattling percussion, and then it opens up with an ethereal section and continues to develop unlike the other songs) Final feelings: Aggravated. Head-nodding, but bored. Some fun beats but the lack of variety spoils them.
I bet it's good at a rave, but on a Wednesday morning trying to concentrate on work, I could not wait for this to be over.
so electrical. a bit disturbing when I am in an anxious mood
genuinely what was that
This went exactly how I expected it to: I liked “Breathe”, “Firestarter”, and, to a lesser extent, “Smack My Bitch Up”. The rest was just noise, reminding me I don’t think the 90s rave scene would have been for me.
nice
Feels like I should like this album but I just didn't.
This album is only here for firestarter and breathe. The rest are filler
If you like 90s UK techno, then you must love this album. I do not. It wasn't bad, but it's not my kind of album. It's dirty, it's grungy(good), but it's also repetitive and every song is 1-2 minutes longer than it needs to be.
No fui fan
You couldn't escape this in 1997 - it wasn't great then and doesn't really hold up now. Outside Kool Keith's appearances, there isn't a reason to revisit
I found almost all of this pretty annoying
Definitely not for me.
Boring and repetitive, although some songs from it are classics and I do respect the genre as a whole, this is really not a type of music I enjoy and would play to myself under any circumstances... 🫣
Another uninteresting electronic record, just seems to blend in for me.
If this was the prodigy, I’d hate to see the ordinary kid.
Yeah...No
This music sounds like the birthplace of frosted tips. It’s functional for sure, I could definitely rave to it. But for listening at home as I do chores, it didn’t amp me up or make me enjoy taking out the recycling. It’s repetitive and homogenous, which is fine in da club, but I didn't really enjoy it as an album.
Interesting album…
couple of good songs, but not really my genre.
Nor for me
The intro to Firestarter was the only part I really enjoyed
3 of the most normal ones: 1. Smack My Bitch Up - The most provocative track on the album. The title caused controversy (accusations of misogyny), although Liam Howlett claimed that he meant "kick her ass" in a figurative sense. 2. Diesel Power - because it has more hip-hop and less electro. 3. Narayan - the longest (9 min) , the first half is fine, such Indian motifs xsshhaha and a meditative mantra, then again a heavy electro beat. Result: I read that the band itself made a statement that synthesizers and samplers can sound as dirty, aggressive and dangerous as electric guitars. not my genre, it's hard to listen to electronics, like a robot shouts, but when there was a rap, an interesting instrumental and vocals - then fine
Ngl I was bored for a lot of this. The first half of the album wasn’t great and I felt like I’d heard it all before. The back half was way better and kept it from being a one though. The prodigy had to walk so Death Grips could run though
Very okay album. I often felt bored. Didn't do much to really grab my attention and the same DnB beat can only be reused so much. Certainly important for later groups like death grips but not my favorite by any means. Favorite track: Serial Thrilla
A very "band" way to do electronic/dance music, but dunno. I think if I'd been 14 when this came out, it might've meant the world to me, but Prodigy never hit me the way it reached a lot of folks.
Every track feels like the soundtrack to some subpar early-1990s film that is basically a Matrix ripoff or an action/crime Tarantino homage (but British).
I understand that all the albums are here because they have been successful and embraced by a lot of people. This is no exception. The band is raucous and very repetitive. I guess that’s the allure for many. I liked some of the grooves, but they end up going nowhere. The video for “Smash My Bitch Up” was disturbing and misogynistic. Definitely not for me.
ts sucks
Not a huge fan of electronic punk rap done in British voices, I guess. It was an interesting episode of 60 songs but just not my thing.
3/10
didn´t love it
CRAB I know this goes crazy at a rave or a big party and surely while you've got substances. Maybe if you're making your way through a neo noir dystopian cyber future as a blade runner or samurai displaced in time or something. But sitting here at work rating albums with a resting heart rate, it is just alright. CRAB
Didn't like it in high school. Still don't like it now.
Hated this
Good enough to add some songs to my workout playlist and have something different come up every now and again. Not sure I would go out of my way to listen otherwise though.
This record is certainly an interesting time capsule, though it can feel a bit corny and cringe to listen to. While it isn't a record I would necessarily revisit, I don't regret giving it a listen. Liked: Narayan, Climatize Blocked: Diesel Power, Serial Thrilla
Not for me.
4/10
Not my jam
Not my cup of tea
They did it they figured out how to make instrumental music sound bad I’ve heard a couple of Prodigy songs before and kinda liked them, so was sorta looking forward to this one and was pretty disappointed. Some of the beats sound pretty good and get you invested, and then they do something stupid that ruins it. It almost feels like an video game ost at times While listening for the first time I thought it wasn’t really that bad at all and then my second listen through made me realize how shallow and uninteresting this one is. Also the vocals are too British
The thing about electronic music is you'll think it's hype and then listen to the same beat and sample on loop for 5+ minutes
Less than an hour, that's good. I'm making it obvious that I don't like when albums are over an hour. This album has almost no variety, none between songs and none in songs. The song would repeat a melody and keep repeating and never stop. I just didn't really get this album.
Worth one listen kinda awful proto industrial hip hop
Did people actually like this? +1 for kool keith
Their 3 hits are on here. They are bangers. There are also a bunch of other songs on here. If this was an EP….
demasiado gede
It’s ok
2.5 not my style
Couple bangers but goes on a bit
2/5 - If all music sounded like this, poetry would be much more popular.
Not my vibe. I much prefer "Breathe" to "Smack My Bitch Up" (and as a woman, I detest that title), but like most industrial / electronic music, it's extremely repetitive and gets a tad boring after awhile. No thanks.
Did not like
This is the album I most associate with my personal break-away from popular music. My friends started listening to Prodigy (and other similar artists) and I just didn't like it. I still don't. And then more music started heading off into that electronic direction and it seemed like the other option was nu-metal, and I just stopped watching MTV and listening to the radio for a few years. This album brings back vivid (though hazy) memories of my friends baked out of their gourds playing Wipeout on the Playstation 1, while I watched and wished we were playing NCAA Football and listening to guitar music. (I originally included SSX in this, but just googled and apparently that game didn't come out until 2000 on the PS2, so perhaps these memories aren't as vivid as I thought?) This album is a good example of something that I do not like personally but agree that it is essential listening. I did not know until reading the Wikipedia page that Tom Morello and Matt Cameron were on this album. I also never knew that the looped guitar in "Firestarter" was sampled from a Breeders song, and listening to it now I still can't make it out. "Climbatize" bothered me the least on this listen-through. I'm not sure I ever made it to the end of this album so I never knew it closes with an L7 cover. That bumps it up half a star for me.
This isn't music for listening to - it's music for dancing to, and I'm not much of a dancer. So for me, it's just more repetitive techno beats with nothing that really appeals to me. Each track has about six words of "lyrics" - usually sampled from other, better songs - repeated ad nauseam like every other instrument. I'll pass, thanks.
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
It’s tough to express just how big a deal the hype was around this back in 1997 leading to its release. It was going to start a revolution a la grunge and Nirvana. And then that just did NOT happen. Filler for thousands of used CD sections. As such, its inclusion here is more of a curio, a footnote to OK Computer or the swing music craze.
Ok. But not really my music.
Not my normal go to but I definitely didn’t mind it. The only reason I’m rating it as low as I am is that my boss plays this album on repeat almost every day at work and I’ve heard it probably 3000+ times at this point. Not something I’d ever normally listen to either way.
Not my genre
First track is awful. Whether it was intended or not, it depicts awful things. I enjoyed the rest of the album.
ehhh..
not for me, I understand the appeal but not for me
Barely listenable but two bangers get it two a 2.
A lot of weak fillers but the classics go hard. 2/5
This gets an extra star because I recognize that it was influential and basically the first of its kind to hit mainstream. That said, this is not my jam. Half the beats sound like farts in an aluminum trashcan. It's full of energy -- and that energy extends, almost monotonously, the whole album. Also, how come no one ever told Keith Flint that an inverse mohawk is basically a baldspot?
There's some decent beats here, but overall I found it repetitive and annoying. I pretty much just don't like the genre. 2.5
Not my favourite genre
Really couldn’t get on witb this at all
not my vibe but it's a vibe!
I can understand the appeal
Ok beats and cringe lyrics.
This is lame.
I heard it but don’t remember any of it.
Before Listening: I haven’t heard of this album or this band! I’m excited to see what’s in store! After Listening: I wasn’t expecting British rap/electronic! The album wasn’t bad, it just was a lot of the same. The stand out for me was Diesel Power, which I enjoyed.
Interesting and different. Not for me though.
Heilt greitt. Not my cup of tea.
The first thing I noticed about The Fat of the Land was that it felt like the soundtrack to a 2000s movie about rebellious teenagers, like an intro sequence where all the characters are being introduced while going out, causing chaos, and just doing whatever they want and I thought that vibe was cool. Now, Even though this isn’t a genre I would normally choose to listen to, there were a few songs that I genuinely enjoyed. At the same time, a lot of the album felt overwhelming. I could understand the energy and the atmosphere this album required but it got to a point that it was too much for me to handle for long periods of time. It’s not something I would put on in my day-to-day life but overall it was a cool listen.
A little too hard core for me
more my style but not quite my tastes just yet
Hørt i snøstorm søndag 27.12.25 Det e jo noen bangers, men nei, fuck det her. Ta vare på - Smack My Bitch Up - Firestarter - Breathe - Funky Shit skip alt anna
anxiety inducing by itself ngl but would make a great video game soundtrack for something like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
DNFed bc I get the point (I think)
It was ok won’t listen again
Not my thing but I can see the attraction. 2/5.
It's more grating than offensive, honestly.
Music for Sega Genesis commericals
I remember a prodigy song on big whiney tunes and thinking it was great. The album has not aged well I did not enjoy it.
Cool ish
Not really my cup of tea. Some good grooves created, but it all started lacking variety and sounded all the same to me.
Interesting....almost a 3 but didn't finish the album propaaaa - the beat precedes the lyrics tbh
I don't understand the hype. Maybe the lyrics are too cerebral for me?
It’s ok. Some cool bears. They mix electronic with harder rock. Nothing revolutionary.
I know it was ground breaking for its time but i feel like it didn’t age well at all haha
Some bangin tunes
Payday 2 music but without the crime (less fun)
Couple good songs. Turns into repetitive slop. I might come back to a couple songs, but I'll never listen to the full album again.
This was probably the first 'electronic' album I ever purchased. The imagery from the 'Firestarter' video was bizarre and menacing in a way that I hadn't seen before. I think they were probably one of the first, if not the first, electronic artist to really style themselves like a rock band, which was honestly the necessary ingredient for a suburban 18 year old like me to buy in, not to mention the MTV marketing machine, etc. Overall the album holds up, if in a background music sort of way. The beats are fun and it's not too dense. The impact of this album is about a specific moment in time and it never really transcends that. But fun to listen to for nostalgic purposes. And the album cover is fucking great.
Not the worse, not the best electronic album. Did go by quick! high 2/5
This was kind of around in 1997. Smack My Bitch Up was pretty controversial on the evening news as I recall. And the album influenced almost every U2 remix of the era. But it sounds of a time. Not a classic by my standards.
Beats are good, lyrics are concerning. Nice hearing an accent like mine tho. 2.5
A good variety between god damn wtf awful to not that bad
Not for me
Yah no. Lotsa beats but goes nowhere, really.
Brings back memories of Doug recovering on the couch from the previous nights rave rambling on about "yellow world". Still pretty funny. Other than the nostalgic chuckle not much here for me.
Tô no time do ian!
Know & like the three radio hits. Other than that would not seek this out
Except for that one track, it just sounds like noise to me. Not my kind of album.
I know more songs on this album than I thought when looking at the track list. Shows how big it was when it cale out I guess. Its not a bad album, just not a great one for me. They found thwir niche and stuck with it. Ita almost a rock band approach to electronic music.
Sounds a bit dated now
Electric repetitive music like this is not my jam, there are some fun beats on this album though. I could run or bike to this, it's fast paced and hecticly intense in a good way. But still got tired of it pretty quick
The crab is the best thing going for this album; it gets 5 stars. The album only gets 2. Techo just isn't my scene.
It was interesting and some parts were interesting but it’s not what I can listen to casually.
I can see being into this at specific times, but generally not for me.
Totally not my style. But I'm glad to know a new band 🥸
Did not enjoy this.
Nineties Funky Sh@#* 🤯
This is not my typical genre, but I listened while at work today and it was very motivating. I like it for background music.
Not good
Pretty forgettable with the exception of "Smack my Bitch Up"
Biggest hits but not the best Prodigy album; that is Music for the jilted generation. Not really an album band
Somewhat repetitive to my ears, nothing special sounding to me.
This is insane
I didn't get much out of this one. Most of the songs were too long, I kept getting distracted and starting over. Just don't like it.
Far to intense
Irgendwie nicht so meins
2/5 electronic music is not my thing
I thought it would be better. I just can’t seem to get behind it.
Hey, this album. I've seen this cover around before, but I've never heard of the actual band. I have an inkling that this is going to be a dance album. Yes, I've come to this conclusion entirely because of the crab rave music video. Yep. About what I was expecting, though I like my brand of late-90s techno a little more subdued than this. That being said, this isn't half-bad. Some cool drum breaks and alright electronic tones make for a decent of-the-time listen. The vocals are somewhat of a let down, however. Very cheesy and jarring. The tracks also have a nasty habit of going on for way longer than they needed to. "Diesel Power" is a good tune. Big fan of the echoing ambience, and the lead synths have a lot of kick to them. I'm ambivalent to the rapping segment, but for what it is, it's alright. "Funky Shit" is a decent follow-up. Another characteristically 90s electronic track, though that's by no means a bad thing. Big fan of the cool drum breaks, and the electronic embellishments are, again, quite decent. The siren sounds near the end of the track are a cool way of closing it out. "Naryan" is pretty cool. Very solid instrumental - I'm a big fan of the intro, and those drums do a decent job of carrying the rest of the piece. "Firestarter" is a familiar song - I've heard this one before. Needless to say, it's the strongest track on the album. All of the loose ends are tied together, the drum breaks are tighter than ever. The vocals aren't half bad, and I especially dig the sample during the chorus. I'm checking the book. Topped the charts in the UK and America. Wikipedia reveals that this album is critically acclaimed, though that mostly appears to have been during the time. This thing topped the charts just about everywhere, damn. I'm not too crazy about the actual music of this album, though as a time capsule of the era I think it occupies a solid niche. I cosign this inclusion.
I'm torn on this one. I don't much care for techno music, but I enjoy some of their hits. But in the end, it just gets repetitive.
This definitely feels very 90s, but also kinda like rap. Which might be apt.
I kind of expected this album to be better because Breathe is such a banger. But this was kinda boring. Even the first song, which made me recoil when I saw the title — it’s clear they chose it simply to provoke. Eye roll. Honestly it feels kind of pointless reviewing these electronica albums outside the context of a rave. Highlights (exactly as expected) - Breathe, Firestarter
I think there are 2 scenarios where The Prodigy works: 1) You're on a dancefloor on some form of uppers and losing your mind OR 2) You're watching a movie set in the late 90s and there's a club scene and you need 15 seconds of a song that's gonna immediately communicate to the audience the exact era/vibe of this club scene - firestarter would be the song of choice. Outside of those 2 scenarios, I find their music pretty boring. Even the big songs didn't do much for me sitting alone in my apartment trying to work. I was just bored. It wasn't even good background music for working. It just felt monotonous and grating when not on a dance floor. Sorry to all the ravers out there.
Decent songs, very video game ost sounding but something I probably will never come back to
not for me
Kinda boring, just beats, annoyed me at certain points
This album came out at the arse end of UK rave crossing into 90s lad culture. The result is aggressive, misogynistic and unpleasant, and feels like you are about to be punched in the face by a drunk geezer in an England shirt. I like some of the music, but I really can’t cope with the lyrics or the way they’re sung. I get that the late Keith Flint is now seen as a sort of cuddly grandpa figure but he’s not very likeable on here.
Great album cover
a little bit aggressive, a little bit annoying. mostly the later.
I felt bludgeoned listening to this. I it 2 stars because I recognize that the group are technically proficient at bludgeoning.
I don't think electronic dance music is completely unnecessary but this is boring and annoying.
** Not my pair of shoes
Yeah, well, it was a thing I listened to. Not awful. Not very interesting.
Interesting! Add n to x does this much better
If I wanted bland pablum i would have gone to the grocery store. Not Kid Rock levels of bad cause you'd at least need a brain to comprehend how awful this tripe is.
Not my style of music but I liked it more than I thought I would.
What is it about people in the 90s absolutely loving electronic/techno music that just drones on and on? At least this one has some lyrics here and there, but damn this was a hard one to get through.
Really good for speedwalking, but a bit repetitive
This all sounds like it was from a video game based on the matrix. I was hopeful I’d like this, because I love good electronic albums, but I just don’t really like punky big beat/techno and so this isn’t for me. The second half is better but I don’t want to hear this again
So so so lbb. No wonder Radek likes this. Ooh interesting spooky sounds from a desert. This music feels like the camera work done on the album cover with the crab vibing with its paws up and the camera moving fast in spirals around him. Lbb. Piipaa sounds. Serial killer? Oh, thrilla. Drug music. I am too sober for this. Second to last song and many others sound like from the movie dune.
Club y2k-ish. Lil angry too. Not bad tbh, especially considering I don’t really enjoy/havent listened much to whatever genre is. Firestarter is kinda dope
Brilliant album for doing work to. Repeating patterns and beats help to concentrate on what I'm writing. Get into a bit of a transe. Although not quite might thing.
I've always felt I should have really liked the Prodigy, after all, they do fit my favourite genre of Electronic...however as much as I've tried, this has never been a go-to album for me. A lot of their older stuff I have and like, but I do not own an actual copy or for that matter have a streamed copy saved of The Fat of The Land. To me, they were just trying to sound like a "new wave" type of punk, trying to get a rise from being offensive but sounding quite sad & a little too commercial.
I struggled to get into it, reminded me of massive attack which isn't really my jam but wasn't bad
Couldn't finish it. Just not my type of music. Some real cool moments in some of the songs, but not enough to make it worth slogging through the repetitive drums. I can see why it would be good though
I don’t really like the sound as much, it sounds like music for a movie
Ooh great more 90s action movie music. This album is at least better than the OTHER 90s action movie music I listened to but I don't really like it still.
This is a tough one for me to rate. I really like the craft and the production techniques here, and fundamentally I would say the songs are all "good". Honestly though, it feels far too long for me. All these songs hang their hats on a couple of cool-sounding ideas but never develop enough new ones to hold my interest. So for as energetic and lively a record as this is, it was ultimately kind of a slog for me to get through.
Okay dance music, reminiscent of 90s-00s action chance sequences
I think these guys had an album before this one with no vocals. It was pretty good.
a little too repetitive for easy listening, would be great in a club setting
this was indeed some funky shit. I thought it won’t be for me (maybe because I don’t have any need to smack my bitch up at the moment) but I actually enjoyed it, though I did get tired of it pretty fast.
Although Fat of the Land was ubiquitous at the time, I was lent it by Conor Brannigan on cassette – that's not ubiquity or access. Because you can't skip tracks on a cassette, I just skipped the whole thing. That's probably because I was aware that it was it was a dance record: breakbeat or techno or rave or something. I'd heard dance music on the radio in the backs of taxis. Usually on a wet Friday or Saturday. It sounded dreary and repetitive. Why do taxi drivers listen to music meant for groups of people? But Fat of the Land couldn't be the dreary and repetitive, could it? It has three top ten singles. And, in my memory, they were okay – they had the shape of songs, they had hooks and choruses. There was an effort at arrangement, rather than the looping oblivion of a dance mix. It is with that hope – open mind and open heart – that I went into Fat of the Land. Breathe certainly has sections: distinct verse and chorus, textural changes that herald transitions. It is a song, if a lyrically meaningless one. Firestarter is more limited than memory suggested, merely alternating between Keith Flynn's two meteric banalities. Smack My Bitch Up doesn't really change at all. A generous reading of the song's two couplets suggests something of a story: by “chang(ing) (his) pitch up,” that is adopting a feminine tone or persona, the protagonist might “smack (his inner) bitch up,” meaning to bring his anima to the surface. He is briefly successful, as illustrated by the exotic female melisimas in the middle of the song, but he returns to his masculine voice, only momentarily transformed. This is evidenced in the gender-flipping in the single's music video. Indeed, it is the music video that gives the song any sense of narrative, any forward motion, anywhere to start and end – start at the beginning of the night and end at the break of dawn. And that is the narrative of all the songs on the album: cuts from excess; the soundtrack to nights partially remembered. They don't need to have structure or development, they don't need to have internal logic, because they have to fit around the dance, the length of the trip, the epic adventure that will become a blur. They are music cues for the movie you make by half-remembering the fun you had. These aren't really songs. There are pseudo-songs, here and there: Fuel the Fire, Serial Thrilla. But they are all tracks. Most are the same sick synth sound twiddled into a pulse by turning the filter knob one way then the other. Someone raps or rants over the top – nothing worth understanding. Sometimes, its a sample instead – the benefit of sample culture is that you can someone saying “This is the funky shit” and make it seem like they're saying it about your shitty funk. But it's all immaterial, as it is about the vibe rather than the content. And these tracks are content for a DJ's set. That they all appear on an album – strangely separate from each other, never mixing into a trip, like Screamadelica – is something of a mystery. They got three hit singles out of it and a massive selling album. But do any of the record's fans think this is the optimum way to experience the music? “Blows your mind drastically, fantastically,” Kool Keith raps on Diesel Power. I don't think anyone would have their mind blown listening to this on cassette in their teenage bedroom. Even on the better speakers I have now, I misheard it as “Close your mind drastically, fantastically.” That's where I'm left. 1.5 I love that crab on the cover, it looks like it’s having a great time. This was not my experience with The Fat of the Land. I may have never actually listened to this album all the way through despite its having sat on my cd shelves for many years. Well I did today and it was a grim experience. A mistake. I noticed for the first time that Breathe - a track I always thought I liked - has its chorus squarely on the 1 minute, 2 minute, 3 minute and 5 minute mark. This is the essence of what the Prodigy really do - mechanical repetition. Nothing truly free, nothing truly unexpected. The visual pretentions (the hair, the clothes) to being a punk or rock band of some sort spill over into the songs to some extent. There is more structure here than might be reasonably expected in techno tracks; even quasi-verses in Serial Thrilla, Firestarter or Fuel my Fire. It is always in thrall to dull, mechanical repetition in the beats, the sample noises, and Keith Flint’s one-note, one-idea voice. But worse than that, it is sort of embarrassing because it invites comparison with songwriting outside the limited parameters of techno. A real band would never have bothered with Breathe’s laughably redundant fourth chorus right at the end. I paid attention to this today. That is surely not what it is for. 1.5/5
Oh wow this is just kind of a generic background blur.
2 sterne
Not their best album unfortunately
A mostly new one today. I think I've only heard two tracks before. Track 1 Despite the horrible title, which led me to mostly ignore this track over the years, the song itself its interesting. Electronic music isn't my thing but I found myself enjoying the beats and the female singer that came in halfway through the song was great. Track 2 is the only song from the album I've really heard before in a meaningful way. Once again, Big Shiny Tunes introduced me to this song. It's an exhilarating song that pumps you up, brings you down a bit and than fires you right back up. I enjoy this one. Track 3 opens with a hypnotic bass line that continues to drive the song throughout. Reminds me a bit of Rage Against The Machine, but rap-ier. Track 4 is a mostly instrumental song, save for the title being chanted throughout. I honestly prefer that to the rapping songs so far. Track 5 is back with a more traditional song structure. Within all of the crazy beats Prodigy comes up with. High energy for sure. Track 6 begins with some marching type beats. I feel like this whole album benefits from being listened to on headphones. All the layers on these tracks are really amazing. Track 7 is the longest track on the album. I feel like most of the songs on this album are a touch longer than needed. This song didn't hold my attention. Track 8 got my attention back. Great track with cool beats. Track 9 is more of the same. Nothing really stands out here for me. Track 10 grabbed my attention more than most of the previous tracks. I think I need words with my electronica. Not bad. Not great. Don't feel a need to hear any of these again, outside of Breathe. 2.4/5
A couple of good ones on here, also a lot that just didn't stick out/background music
We continue to rate albums from The Prodigy that sound like I left open a menu screen from a 2002 video game for 55 minutes. For 2002 video game music, it would be pretty good, but as a full album to listen to for any licit activities before 2 AM in the year 2025, there’s no reason to listen to the full album. Keep “Smack My Bitch Up” and “Firestarter”, skip the rest. 5/10 rounded down
Second half was better than the first one. Some songs dragged on and felt at least twice as long as they were
I can definitely appreciate parts of it and its significance (has its significance faded slightly - is it irrelevant what it's significance is now?) and undeniable impact - I'm just not sure I could listen to it in full for another 5-10 years!
Why? 2/5
NAH
Positives : From song to song, the album flows quite well. There’s a good rhythm to the project - no song really feels out of place. Negatives: The production was quite consistently average throughout, the album I thought was WAY too long for what it is, and there was very little substance to the project, incredibly repetitive from start to finish 3 out of 10 - 2 out of 5
Surprised I made it as far through the album as I did. Never been a fan of The Prodigy, and still not decades later. It’s not the worst I’ve heard, but it just is not for me at all.
Dated. Like worse than any Beatles solo record.
Not a fan of prodigy, but they do have some bangers, and then they have stuff that sounds exactly like their bangers
Very repetitive. I enjoyed the first 30 seconds of each song and then they just kept happening …
Enjoyed smack my bitch up because it was amusing. But this was not my album.
This is an album I’ve heard before. It’s a shame it only has one good track.
Not my thing, never was and probably never will.
Ok in small doses. Wears thin after a while.
No nienawidzę takiej muzyki. Wybacz Prodigy, it’s not you, it’s me. 4/10
It’s probably a vastly improved listening experience if you’re off your face versus commuting into work at 07:30am. There were a few moments where intros got a bit more metal before returning to the exact same rhythm as every other song on the album. Brief moments of hope quickly dashed.
Smack My Bitch Up is the standout, though I did recognize Breath. After that it falls off though.
We should have had this album awhile back when Fat Boy Slim popped up! It could have been the Battle of Electronic Music of the Late 90s. Once again, like with my review of Fat Boy Slim ... this will come down to how well it ages, and how unique the production was creating this album. I listened to this album once or twice when it came out, but have forgotten all of it aside from the radio hits. This one just doesn't sit as well with me. I got it back in the day, but now it just sounds dated.
The Fat of the Land is a defining example of '90s rave culture—a chaotic, high-energy record that captured the rebellious spirit of its time. I absolutely loved it when it first came out. Revisiting it over 25 years later, though, I have to admit the album doesn't hold up quite as well as I remembered. While Firestarter and Breathe remain absolute anthems—tracks that instantly transport me back to my youth—the rest of the album tends to blur together. Much of it feels repetitive, leaning too heavily on looping beats and aggressive energy without enough variation or depth. Favourite tracks: Firestarter and Breathe – timeless classics that still hit hard and bring back powerful memories. Least favourite tracks: Fuel My Fire and Narayan stand out as weaker moments. They feel more like filler—tracks where The Prodigy latch onto a groove and ride it a little too long without much payoff. Album artwork: Absolutely iconic. The crab on the beach is striking, weird, and unforgettable. It's one of the most memorable covers of the era—hard to beat.
This is third album from the British band Prodigy, who primarily do electronic music. Other than “Firestarter” I have been unfamiliar with their music until now. For the most part I found this album forgettable, just not my style. I (at least) give them credit for their energy.
hm
maybe because im sitting on the dock in watch hill or maybe EDM has passed me by, but i found this to be over the top
90's electro nostalgia. didn't stand the test of time all that much though...
A fun album to revisit from my teenage years. Some of it comes off a little more campy than I remember it, like most things I liked when I was younger. Ultimately though, this is a pretty great album of you've ever connected with any of the techno and rave culture if the nineties, and it's obviously an important album to that sound. Is it something I'll go back and listen to on my own? Probably not, but I'm glad I did here. 2/5
1997. More Kinda fun 90's club music. More spacey on this one.
Too aggressive, too repetitive, not enough content, not that interesting, quite overstimulating.
- I haven't listened to this album front to back....ever, and it takes me back to high school. My brother has this CD but I wasn't allowed to use his stuff :P - Besides the couple songs that I know, and they remind me of movies that I really enjoy, this isn't really my vibe.
Muzak
I surprisingly don't hate this, although that may have to do with the Johnny Rottenesque vocals. Still don't like the lyrics or the music all that much though, but there are much worse 90s electronica albums on this list.
Ahh Prodigy. I swear they only made the first two songs on this album to drum up publicity. It's like a label went, "We like you but can you be edgy? We would move a million more units if your edgy." So they did and made cash off something that most folks wouldn't of bought otherwise. Remember kids marketing is always working for ways to take your money. Once you get out from under the "woman hating pyros" that was assigned to them it's not bad if you like electronic dance music. Fast paced, loud and you want to drive like a nut if you listen to it in a car.
I wasn't looking forward to this, but I guess it's not really among the worst. I even kinda liked Fuel My Fire. I guess my main problem is the vocals. I guess their high energy is jarring on the radio. Firestarter still fills me with dread.
This was very early 2000s but just so not my cup of tea. All worse versions of fire starter and not even a massive fan of that
Not my thing, but ok.
Not my thing, bit one note. The singles are all great, obviously but it’s a bit copy and paste.
All just kind of sounds like ‘YoU WOuLdN’t STeAL a CAr’ to me.
The album is OK in the fact that it's a little nostalgic, but I probably wouldn't listen to it very often. It is aged electronic music from the 90s, but has a few songs I've heard before.
Yeah not really into this one
this sucks guys
You know those "flashing lights" warnings that accompany some tv shows and movies ...
Cool but not for me.
Surprisingly, I did’t hate it. But three tracks were enough of this.
I thought I'd love this but it weren't that great. Turns out the singles are much higher quality that the rest of the album. Fantastic live band though.
**An ok album, too much rap for me
Feels epochal but for an epoch I don’t care much about one way or the other. Very listenable as background music.
Why the fuck are there two albums from Prodigy on this list?!? They had one song, and it’s about abusing women. Look, this is clearly their best work, but that doesn’t make it essential listening. This is what kids from nice neighborhoods think they play at raves. No legit club would ever have played anything this commercial.
I don't love the dance/electronic genre that this album falls under, so it's not a big surprise that I didn't love this album. I get that it was pretty groundbreaking for its time and probably really enjoyable for listeners that love this style of sonic adventure, but for me, it was kind of a slog and I didn't love it. Two stars.
Very one note
I genuinely don't know what I just listened to. I didn't hate it, but I cannot put my finger on what exactly it is. I do like that there is electronic music representation on this list and it was cool from a music history sense to see where some of today's modern EDM came from (although the true origins is disco). It is far from my personal taste though. Some of the songs went on for far too long and I don't remember a single one of them even though I just listened to it before writing this review. I wouldn't reach for this again.
how was this overstimulating and boring at the same time? almost sounded like damon albarn collabed with a swarm of adderall-fueled locusts
I get it. This is well crafted dance music. Intoxicating and mesmerizing. The kind of music that will get you grooving with the bass pulsating through your body in a live setting. Maybe even while a little high If you’re in your 20s. I’m not. To listen as album music, it is not my thing. I find the music to be sensory overload in a car or while wearing headphones. My rating reflects my personal interest in this kind of music in a listening setting and not a reflection of the band’s craft.
2.5
Every song seems like it should be playing in the background during a scene in a 90s futuristic sci-fi thriller where the protagonist has to go to a seedy nightclub. A few tunes are alright, but a lot of it is kind of irritating. "Diesel Power", featuring Kool Keith, is probably the highlight for me. There's a couple other tracks I don't mind, but I'll likely never listen to this again. 2.5 stars.
Pretty okay. But just okay
Classic cover, everyone into music in the 90's knew this one. I never figured out the attraction, not my vibe but it was pretty hard to not hear "Firestarter", "Smack My Bitch Up" or "Breathe" on the radio or at a party in 1997. Super popular album by listen counts, the three lead songs have over 150M listens each. The remaining songs are mostly over 10M. Someone is listening to them and they have 4M monthly listeners on Spotify. Staying power. His voice and their incessant musical pace just don't add up for me. "Diesel Power" has to be one of the first Brit-rap songs I can remember, setting the table for future artists. Popular, staying power, hits, it has all the right accolades to make this list but wouldn't make my personal T1001.
I can see these songs going hard at a club and understand why people like this but “Smack My Bitch Up” as the opening track put me in an uncomfortable mood for the whole album
Oh my god the songs were....so...long for what this repetitive 90s techno babble was. No.
Really not my thing. Will not be relistening
5/10. Feel like many people would hate this take but I just couldn't get into this. The songs just felt kind of angry at nothing in particular. I couldn't discern meaning from them and it reminded me of COD lobby music. I can appreciate the pioneering nature of the album here and the powerful beats but my appreciation for this one probably ends there.
These songs remind me of the Saw franchise. Or of like. Tony Hawk skating video games
Not my favorite genre. I’d rather listen to Lords of Acid if I’m in an electronic mood. It is an important album to the sound of the late 90’s
Bring on the stimulants and go nuts. Great for 18 year old moshing and spinning like a whirling dervish.
Dance music. Not my thing for listening to.
meh 2/5
It’s strange, I thought I liked The Prodigy more than I actually do. I like some of their individual tracks a lot (Omen, Outer Space), but that energy they bring in short bursts didn’t really translate in an album setting for me. Underwhelming.
Not terrible but not enjoyable either. Some interesting moments here and there. At least it has one of my all time favorite album covers.
Can’t take enough drugs
edgy, i just don't see it
Good for exercising but not quite my cup of tea otherwise…
Pre-listening thoughts: ur telling me this is an electronica album with a crab on the cover and it DOESN’T have crab rave???? Post/during listening thoughts: the first song is one of the funniest things I have ever laid my ears on. The repeating of smack my bitch up over fart-y bass is killing me. And not to mention when the singing came in. Almost as funny as the Life is Life song from Opus Dei. This is just fine electronic music otherwise. I would be satisfied hearing this in the background of a video game but not like overly tuned into it, ya know? It’s no Sonic R soundtrack or anything. 4.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nope Fav tracks: Smack My Bitch Up Least fav tracks: Serial Thrilla
Not a fan of the EDM/techno stuff but this one had some catchy hooks and was not altogether atrocious. Just tiring after a while, but that goes for the whole genre for me.
Singles are pretty iconic and all, but much of the rest is filler at best.
Listened to on 1/22/25, I struggled to listen to this one. The fast moving beats and synthesizer were not to my taste. The only song I liked a little bit was Diesel Power, and that had some decent lyrics at best. Everything was also extremely repetitive. This one was basically a DNL for me. I would rate it 2/5, not to my taste but could be for clubs and discos.
If you like boom sha wow na wow music repeating the same 5 words, this is for you. I listened to this on hydrocodine and thought it was amazing. On a later listen, it was annoying. 1001 album worthy: Yes - 35/61
Big beats. Silly lyrics. Toxic clown prince energy. That's all it took for rave culture to get a foothold in America. Certainly some tracks will get you moving but most go nowhere. And the ones that do “progress" follow the same exact structure. A time capsule - like Bud Fox on a cocaine bender - perhaps better left unopened.
Kind of catchy, but very repetitive, like a lot of the techno from this era. The sheer repetitiveness of this definitely made things get boring fast. I understand that Prodigy and bands like them brought us to where we are today when it comes to a lot of electronic and techno music, but the 3+ minutes of pure repetition just doesn't tend to do it for me.
Spotify No headphones Didn't like it 2 star
This seems like a great entry from a genre I really don't like. Electronic is just too repetitive for me, almost insanity-inducing. The famous songs on this are all memorable, but they all overstay their welcome for me. Better as 30-second snippets rather than 5+ minute-long opuses.
PS w przeciwieństwie do koncertu the Libertines, na the Prodigy mógłbym pewnie wyrwać co najwyżej ostatni włos z glacy nafuranego fana SmoCk Moi Beeech Op
Fire starter is a tuuuune but the rest of the songs aren’t up my street.
I don't know when I'm ever going to be in the mood to listen to this properly. Breathe is great though
Einzelne gute Stücke, in der Summe nervig
not my style of music
Very good bass danceable but ultimately boring. I need songs not just beats. I do admit these are GOOD beats and every once in a while a trace of a melody shows up. 2.5 stars
Liked the crab on the cover and that’s about it!
I went into this album expecting not to enjoy it. And I didn’t. But I didn’t expect how I felt about it. I thought I’d be giving it a 1/5 rating, but there’s something there, something I wasn’t anticipating. All the things I expected to dislike about the album—its aggressive tone, the snarled and sparse vocals, the repetitive nature of the songs (I actually accidentally listened to half of “Smack My Bitch Up” again because I hadn’t noticed the album starting over)—didn’t sit well with me. Until, at some point, I stopped trying to listen to it as an album. I thought dismissively, “This is the kind of music they play in movies when they want to disorientate the viewer,” and then something clicked. I began picturing chase scenes or futuristic video game levels, and suddenly the music made much more sense in that context. I’m still giving it a 2/5 because I can’t see myself revisiting it, but it’s surprising how much more I appreciated it once I changed my mindset. I honestly thought this album was destined for the 1/5 pile. Standout Track: Mindfield Score: 2/5
In August 2016 the Chicago Cubs fired a DJ who played Smack My Bitch Up after reliever Aroldis Chapman left the mound during a game against the St Louis Cardinals. Chapman served a 29-game suspension to begin the season under MLB’s new domestic violence policy for allegedly pushing and choking his girlfriend.
achei MUITO ruim bicho pelo amor de deus serviu de aprendizado pelo menos pra saber que a primeira música do álbum (smack my bitch up) tocava o tempo todo quando eu era criancinha
I know you can say this for every genre. But specifically this kind of music, to me, all sounds the exact fucking same. Except climbatize I guess
Not my thing and most of the songs sound alike. Diesel Power was my favorite aka disliked the least.
A bunch of samesy rave music that I remember enjoying as a kid and I just can't really get into it here. It's repetative, but not creative, which is essential for electronica for me. It's more rave than house and it simply sounds very dated in today's soundscapes. I liked Funky Shit and Fuel My Fire enough, but it couldn't save this album for me.
I don't feel anything when I listen to music like this. Except that I don't want to hear a man (or anyone) talking about smacking his bitch up. 2.
This is not for me.
didn't love, wouldn't listen to again.
I never got into this genre of music. It seems so brutal. Hard to listen to.
More like Prodi-F
Couple good tracks, but mostly on the dumb, repetitive side of rave. 2.5 🌟
There are some songs on this album that almost feels like cassics ny now. Listning to them today I get reminded why the Prodigy was a band I never got in to.
For some reason, I thought this was going to be a hard rock album. Like most of the albums on this list, there are some redeeming qualities. There aren't many on this.
Fat of the land is an underused phrase. I was born in the wrong century. I was meant to be a 1600’s peasant. Dying of old age at 27 type of shit. This first song is menu music to a snowboarding video game. The weird chanting is actually cool. Man. Will I like this??? I mean it’s background music for video games or maybe what’s playing in some 1999 hacker club in a movie. This is just the soundtrack for the Matrix isn’t it? I didn’t want to tip my hand but that’s what this was leading to. It’s kind of good. It’s pretty ferocious. Love the shouted vocals, the energy. It’s old as all hell, but this stuff has sort of come back anyway. Sounds fresh. This rap is a little mid. Yeah. Attack a whack pack a stack a black a Knickknack. Lame. Get outta here. Never has “funky shit” seemed so high stakes. I’m fucking shaking. Meh. I was hoping we’d stay with the more aggressive vibe of Breathe. This song is annoying. Weird end is cool, but that’s it. This is getting a little same-y. What was thrilling early, is becoming a little trite. Although this could easily be the opening to like an ECW show. Which would be cool. I wish I was watching ECW. If I can’t be a 1600s peasant, I need to at least be a fat guy knee deep in wrestling tapes. I’m 99% of the way there on that one. This song SUCKS. Cooler. More interesting beat changes and soundscapes. Singing. This thing started out so aggressive and driving and has fallen off a cliff. This is an 8 minute EDM song. Oh boy. What is this? Maybe it’s meant to be background music. It begs to be ignored. Oh now this is cooler. The whole appeal early on was the life and the energy. That has all but faded up until this point. Now, this isn’t great, but it’s a vast improvement. And it’s also bad. Yeah there’s too much repetition for me. I know that’s the idea for clubs or whatever, but I’m not in a club. This is supposed to be an album experience and it’s beginning to fail me. Please do something. I’m observing the details in the crab on the cover at this point. The horn ending on Climbatize is so good. That’s what I’m talking about. Different stuff. If it bores rave dorks, then I’ll probably like it. More punk-y vocals with a backing that has elicited a half hearted “meh” from me. Nice weird organ. This is what the half star should have been invented for. It’s just right in the middle of a two and three. What started as a andrenaline pumping experience that initially blew me away turned into a repetitive dumpster filled with off brand paintball and BMX game soundtracks. Not that I hate those things. The fat of the land was a little too much fat and not enough land. Whatever the hell that means. 2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Breathe
couple of belters and plenty of filler. Listened on a short road trip and my mates couldnt handle it. Had to listen to some Ray Lamontagne to chill the fuck out.
This basically seems like 90s rave music... not ideal for a morning listen. I'm not a huge fan of EDM so it's tough to have a well informed opinion on this kind of stuff. I enjoy some of the rapping on a couple of the tunes. I have to admit it's growing on me a bit as it goes on, I don't hate it.
