Reviews (page 3 of 13)
Love Offspring and have listened to this album many times before
Lyrics are as juvenile as ever but man does this slap. Forgot what a rush this album is.
Love the energy in the album. Still holds up.
Great hits! Fun album cuts... no unlistenable songs
Fuck. Yes. One of the first CDs I ever owned and one of the first, next to Green Day's Dookie, that I knew every song front to back. While Self Esteem and and Come Out and Play are the long-lasting singles that put them on the map, Gotta Get Away was the anthem for an insecure kid in the 90s and Bad Habit became the song to blare with rage once I got my license and was stuck in traffic. Dexter, Noodles and the gang put out a masterpiece.
Fav!
There’s more hits than I realized on this album. Punk can be hit or miss for me but I like the offspring a lot. Relatable, candid lyrics that paint vivid pictures of the struggles of modern day life. I appreciate the stake down of road rage and driver violence on Bad Habit (maybe just in my own head)
I forgot how awesome this album is I remember my brother having this album when I was really young and getting really into it really early I feel like it’s banger after banger between the guitar riffs and the base lines and riffing drums. This album is special, and I feel like one of the first that got me into the idea of punk rock.
A classic!
Punk-rock de los Offspring.
If you've never driven on the 405 while blasting Bad Habit you haven't lived.
I can already tell this is going to be 10/5 for me. Can't tell how much is nostalgia and how much is because it's genuinely a banger of an album.
Classic
Ah, comfort and nostalgia. My favorite band growing up and still a favorite genre. Unfortunately I hadn’t had much experience with this album in my younger days as I started my Offspring fandom with Americana. Classic Offspring sound. Fast and hard, fun lyrics that can be goofy and playful while still having a message. For me, I find their music energizing, even now. The intros, outros, and random intermissions were always a joy to hear, even if it did sometimes cut jarringly through the music. The extra long last track with the hidden song is a staple, but one that I’ve not missed.
Amazing album. A very important album to listen too.
such a banger
Another big high school record. I've always loved the opening to Come Out and Play.
This album is on of the defining albums of my youth. Without this album, I don't listen to half of what I consider my favorite music now. I will gladly listen to this one anytime, anywhere. Also contains one of the best song for blasting out loud while driving around idiots of all time.
Got me screaming STUPID DUMB SHIT GOD DAMN MOTHERFUCKER in traffic
Love the hectic punky vibe on some of the tracks
This is a bath of beautiful melodic, unrestrained punk. It is rightfully considered one of the greatest albums in the genre.
Saw them play this one live. Loved it ever since!
top notch
Fantastic punk rock album from one of the greats! Love them when I was younger and still do! Best songs: Come Out and Play, Self-Esteem, Genocide
Pretty crazy for its time. Very fun to listen to.
I have listed to this album for decades. I like it
Great, energetic album with easy recognizable Offspring hits. I think that when it comes to american punk rock, you can't get much better.
Epitome of 90's punk!
Blast off with music that will get ur blood pumping and emit 90s teen angst thru pop punk music the only way The Offspring know how to do. This album will have you sweating from the non stop guitar licks and furious fast drumming from track to track. Anticipate pure adrenaline running thru your veins. Accept the transformation.
One of my all-time favorites.
Good stuff
I'm a fan of the Offspring. I haven't listened to them in a few years like I used to but this is a great album. Very nostalgic and different from their comedic songs.
Great, high energy punk rock. I knew three of the songs already. Only negative I can think of is the vocals are done in the same way throughout. I'm sure that will lead some reviewers to say all the songs sound the same.
Childhood memories!
OMG! This album is amazing! Takes me back to when I first moved here. I'd listen to the tape on my walkman on the bus on my to parklane and back.
From the first lines of John Mayer’s (not that one) vocals on “Time To Relax”, I feel incredibly safe and nostalgic in the arms of Dr. Dexter Holland (look it up) and the rest of The Offspring. One of the greatest punk rock records of the 90’s, I have listened to this so many times that I was honestly shock that “Nitro (Youth Energy)”, “Bad Habit” and “Something To Believe In” didn’t even have their own Wikipedia pages - in my mind they were definitely singles. There’s not a bad moment from the intro until after “It’ll Be A Long Time” where it takes a minor dive until “Smash” once again brings it all back. I’m rounding this up due to it having a hidden track - how 90’s is that?
I had never listened to the Offspring aside from their hits, but Smash is about as complete of an album as any to come out of the nineties. Now I’m going to listen all the way through Americana too just to see what other hidden gems the band has to offer. “Bad Habit” may as well be called “The Houston Driver’s Anthem.” Throughout the song I couldn’t help but imagine a cobalt blue Challenger topping 120 southbound on 59 through Greenway. It’s a dog-eat-dog world, I guess. “Gotta Get Away” has a Nirvana-esque feel to it, especially during the chorus. “Come Out and Play” is a classic, and I’d never appreciated the depth of the song and its story until I took a couple of listens this weekend. I do wonder if the band would have written it in a post-Columbine world, though. I hate to admit it, but “Self Esteem” sounds all too familiar with lines like “I may be dumb, but I’m not a dweeb.” “Not the One” appears superficial at first, but the final verse reveals the band’s maturity and ability to incorporate meaningful lyrics into their head-banging style. Though we bear the burdens of past generations’ mistakes, we can only hope we’re not cursing future generations in the exact same way, but more likely than not, we are. I was looking forward to a seven minute solo to finish things off with “Smash,” and while the five minutes of silence followed by an Arabian take on “Come Out and Play” confused me, I’ll assume there’s an artistic value I don’t understand. Smash is the epitome of mid-nineties angst. With both classics and deep cuts orchestrated by a soothing narrator, the album has not a single skip in 14 tracks. Hmm, I especially enjoyed that one. Let’s see what’s next!
I am highly biased on this album because I have loved a bunch of it's songs since I was a kid. My mom shared her love of 90s rock music with me and I have many fond memories of listening to Come Out and Play with her in the car. Bonus fun fact: The Offspring have a song titled You're Gonna Go Far Kid that was adopted by bronies as a theme song of sorts.
Totaler Klassiker. 5 Sterne.
J'ADORE !!!
Really good punk album. The Offspring are one of those bands that get people into punk music, and this album has a few of the great songs that hooked us.
Smash
Damn, what an absolute pure punk rush this album is. Definitely the sort of flat out energy I can really appreciate. I can say I've heard of The Offspring, but I've not heard much of their stuff, and this was all new to me. But this absolutely rocked. It's fast and aggressive, while being super catchy and harmonic. Made for great driving music but the gas pedal seemed much heavier with this playing. Excellent album. Favourite: Nitro (Youth Energy)
This shit right here! so goddamn obnoxious! such a great time! What's the secret sauce?! Whence their charm?!
Sick album, gotta love The Offspring Saved tracks: Nitro(Youth Energy), Gotta Get Away, Come Out and Play, It’ll Be a Long Time, What Happened To You?
90s classic, hearing 'Bad Habit' was tops
How does my brain still know every word of this album, after not hearing it for yearssss, yet I forget how old I am?
Love love love
Nostalgia bias but such a great punk album. Good energy, nice variety, incredibly catchy, and great unique vocals. Yeah there’s probably too many woahs but I love this album.
I can't give this album anything less than 5*! It's the soundtrack to my early teens, I love every song and know the album inside out! Offspring are pioneers of nu-punk. All I need now is my skateboard and a quarter bottle of vodka! Simpler times!!
Would give it more if I could
I used to absolutely love the offspring when I was a teenager. First gig I ever went to....Bought an offspring hoodie which was about 10 sizes too big and wore it religiously! When I saw this come up I was a bit worried it wouldn't hold up to how I remembered it. It does though and it's massively nostalgic. Still think nearly every song is great. My favourites are probably smash, nitro, killboy powerhead, come out and play and gotta get away. Dexter dropped out of his PhD when they got big and only recently went back and finished it, which is fair play. I actually think Ignition and ixnay are slightly better albums than this, but it's close....I hope there are more on the list, but having this album was surprising enough. 6 out 5!
Yea
Such solid music.
Decent album
Goes incredibly hard. The best 90s punk album - Dookie can eat a dick. Too bad it's the only good Offspring album. I have to give this a 5/5 or else "The Skeleton" shall deem me unworthy of my skin.
Great album, solid throughout with practically no filler. Every song is a banger
Absolute classic. Top to bottom inspired, politically biting, aggressive, scream-along, and funny too.
A classic
I like this album
my mum use to listen to the offspring. i think she still does every now and then. I will always have this memory of when i was maybe 13 and was listening to You're gonna go far kid, and my mum said she liked the song. I looked at her with utter shock going 'you know The Offspring?' and she gave me this incredulous look and said 'Hazel I've been listening to them before you were even born'. I was born in 1998, I like to believe she was talking about this album.
Very nostalgic sound, love it a lot. this, Ixnay On The Hombre and Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace are great albums. the others have some good tracks but also a lot more complete misses (like Pretty Fly (For A White Guy))
One of my favorites growing up.
So fucking good.
ya ya ya ya ya
The soundtrack to my early teenage years..
SMASH! I particularly enjoyed that one, lets see what's next...
Great album 10/10
Classic album. Lots of bangers on this one.
love it! bestselling independently released album of all time for a reason :)
Toimii edelleenkin.
Ehkä eniten kuuntelemani levy kautta aikojen. No brainer
17 year old me is screaming right now. Nitro still kicks ass, Bad Habit is still morbid fun. I find a lot of the albums brightest songs are the non-singles. Something To Believe In, Killboy Powerhead, So Alone are all fun songs. The singles on the album I feel are pretty dusty and tired but there is still a lot of nostalgia driven love for this album.
A long-standing favorite of mine, particularly my favorite pop-punk album. Just a great blast of energy, attitude, and catchiness.
Absolute classic!!!
sonzeira, curto das antiga já
Great album. The melodies don't sound tired; the guitar parts are interesting, and the lyrics fit the vibe of the music.
Turns out I’ve heard a few of these songs but never really heard of Offspring or this album. I missed a lot of the 90s due to drinking a lot and living in a trailer. This album was hot. Quality punk sound fast clean dirty rock really solid album I loved it.
I'm not sure what more you can expect from pop-punk-rock. The hooks are catchy, the harmonies are solid, the energy is great and it absolute carries a dose of snarkiness and humor. Really enjoyed
Flashbacks to cruising around in Ralph's Volvo and blasting this with the windows down. It may have been a cassette tape!! Album's still great.
Much nostalgia. Great album
Student times are the best
Lekkere punkrock! Yeah!! Favorieten zijn "Bad Habit", "Genocide", "She" of eigenlijk alles behalve "Self Esteem" :-) *****
HELL YEAH
Story time. This album came out my junior year of high school. My first boyfriend (Jeremy) and I listened to it incessantly. Listening to it now brought back all these fun memories of screaming the lyrics at the top of our lungs as we drove around or hung out with friends. After high school Jeremy got addicted to heroine. It was a long slow decline. He OD a few years ago and he’s dead now. RIP Jeremy. I can’t see or hear anybody but you when I listen to this album. And when I do, it’s nothing but joy.
-”Nitro (Youth Energy)” is nice and fast and catchy with great drums -”Bad Habit” totally rips -The chorus in “Genocide” is very catchy. “Dog eat dog/Every day/On our fellow man we prey/Dog eat dog/To get by/Hope you like my genocide” -I’ve definitely heard “Come Out and Play,” specifically that “You gotta keep ‘em separated” line -Literally just a silent gap from 4:04 until 9:04 on “Smash.” The song is 10:40 and 5 entire minutes are just silent. -This has some seriously catchy and great stuff, I think it has a decent likelihood of getting a good number of listens from me. I’m going to give it 5 stars because I think it has some serious potential to get me much more into punk.
Gun in the glovebox <3
Punk-rock de los Offspring.
I love it …
I loved this album as a teenager. I still love it.
Love this album have it on cd and vinyl.
One of my all-time fav punk albums
An all time great. Probably the best punk album to come out of 1994. Right at the blossoming of my musical tastes as a child. This is nostalgic for me. Probably listened to this album 100 times. Just as good as the first time.
Classic!
front to back great. authentic 90s grunge mixed with fast punk rock riffs. classic.
one of the best punk album of the 90's!
My first journey into The Offspring world! a huge load of adrenaline!
Superb
I’ve always loved this album. One of my favourites and reminded me of how great The Offspring are. I still like them and enjoy the odd song but discount them because they aren’t the same band I grew up with.
This could totally use a remaster
My favourite offspring album.
Best album ever!
Excellent one of my favorites
Daniel: “I’m down for that. That was good.” Diane: I fucking love The Offspring. Americana was the first cd I ever bought for myself. Really like the energy of this album. I think some of the instrumental stuff is really well thought through.
6. Saufen macht mich zum Aufreisser. 5* Liebs ganz ganz arg
Bei ricordi
The first CD I ever owned. It brings me back to that specific moment in time, even after all these years. It's affirming to me that I have good enough taste for this record to be on this list.
OH Yes.
Fav Song: Come Out and Play
Fantastic album - their best.
I love it. I love this music. I love it.
Fuck yeah
Best selling independent label album for a reason
I've heard this album 100s of times. One of my best friends wore out 3 copies on CD when we were younger. Still great. Favorite tracks: "Bad Habit", "Killboy Powerhead", "Self Esteem"
Awesome album
Exactly what i think of when i hear the word punk
this is pretty much the best album of all time and i've heard it a kazillion times, it never gets old yewww
Enemies to lovers but it's me and The Offspring. God, I used to hate this band and the music they released, but I listened to the whole thing and let the recommended Offspring tracks that came after roll. Might be part nostalgia, or that I've gotten a taste for punk after my years as a prudish school girl, but this is totally my jam now.
Oh thank you! My brother was a “skate punk.” This sound dominated our shared wall. This album, in particular, brought me round the corner, to hear the “secret track,” gotta get away, and of course, self esteem. I also found the spoken bits hilarious. Actually, the whole is quite cinematic. I do find the vitriol thrown at Offspring interesting. Even my brother, who was certainly a fan back in the day, throws shade these days. But here, the ONLY thing I’m going to address is today’s listen, I’ve decided. I still love it. It feels too long. The issues people have with lack of melody or guitar, well imao much is being carried by the bass. The bass makes this. It is actually bass driven and bass dominant. The lyrics can be… inane, but also quite… surprising. And as a soundtrack for “bad kids” who -Hey, they don't pay no mind If you're under 18 you won't be doing any time- It’s a great soundtrack. And it’s great to run to. Just in general. No police involved. 4 Boolean: True
I still remember all the words. Had this on cassette
I'd probably give this 5 stars if the vocals weren't so obnoxious
Come Out And Play la mia preferita. Geniali le tracce fantasma alla fine.
This was an enjoyable walk down memory lane. I didn't know who the band was, but knew many of the songs.
Haven’t listened to this in many years but it holds up pretty dang well. This album has so many of their great songs and was some 9th grade nostalgia
They always reminded me of a grunge version of punk/post punk. Some songs just didn’t work for me to give this a 5 star though.
Cracking. Love the band. 4.5/5.
Really starts to jam starting with “ya gotta keep em separated” and continues to do so after that
Rock cool me gustó
wrahhh

My second 90 punk rock album in a week. Didn't realise that I like the genre so much. I wasn't listening to it when it came out but I had an enjoyable blast through this album. Who doesn't like a song about getting cut off in traffic: "When I go driving, I stay in my lane But getting cut off, it makes me insane Open the glove box Reach inside Gonna wreck this fucker's ride" I do not advocate violence as the solution, but I well understand the feeling. Hidden track..... I guess it was a good idea at the time?
Smash is a great overall punk and skate punk album that pretty much does exactly what the title promises. The whole thing hits hard, with that raw 80s and 90s punk energy running through every track. The big songs still stand out, mostly because they switch things up a little more structurally and have that extra punch that makes them so memorable. But the deeper cuts are not just filler either. They still bring plenty of speed, attitude, catchy hooks, and the usual punk themes of frustration, rebellion, and general “everything is kind of broken, so let’s yell about it” energy. Overall, this is a fast, loud, super fun listen and, yes, a definite Smash.
Always a pleasure.
Overall: 8/10 The Offspring have always been a bit of a hit or miss band for me, but they perfected the mixture of pop punk and skate punk on this album. The songs are incredibly catchy and well written. They're straight up pop songs. Dexter's voice is pretty much the only reason these guys aren't getting a higher rating from me, but at the same time his voice kind of adds a bit of charm to the whole affair. Fav Song: Come Out and Play
Offspring still had their edge and DIY credentials on this album and you can hear it and feel it. Sums up 90s punk well. Aggressive but still accessible with catchy hooks. Maybe a song or two could be cut to shorten it, but overall a great album.
This was a fun album and a nice change of pace for the list. Points lost for the five minutes of silence in the middle of the last track. Don't play with me. 3.5/5.0: Very Good
Fan of punk rock and all. Offspring hasn’t been my favorite but they’re solid; I’m more of an Americana but it’s great and not a whole lot more to say about it.

There's something really fun about listening to my album of the day in the car with my mom. Even if it isn't something that she really cares about (though this one was), it's just fun for me to share this with her. It's something that I do actually care a lot about, and so being able to share it with her is a joy for me, and I think I enjoy albums more when I'm doing it. I have the same criticism of this album that I have with many albums, that a lot of the songs here kinda sound the same. But there was something really fun about listening to this with my mom, and hearing her reminisce about when it came out, so I have to give it bonus points for that. Favorites: Bad Habit, Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated), Self Esteem
I had a good month in high school when I listened to this on repeat. What Happened to You is so good. The songs are even better live.
Really good. Still on point.
This album, alongside Green Day's Dookie, was essentially the first important pop-punk album. It sounds pretty much exactly like you would expect based on their hits and doesn't really do much else besides that sound. The lyrics are not very good, and the vocals are just OK. This band can write good hooks, but their songs don't do much to engage the listener. It is an important album worthy of being on the list, but it's very of its time and not much more. This album is ranked #10 of 29 albums for 1994 by global rating. Other 1994 albums rated by me: Dookie(2/29)-4 Dummy(4/29)-5 Illmatic(7/29)-5 Ready to Die(11/29)-2 Live Through This(13/29)-4 Protection(15/29)-4 Talking Timbuktu(17/29)-3 Music for the Jilted Generation(19/29)-4 Dog Man Star(20/29)-3
t's neither the band's best nor their most sophisticated record, but it helped bring punk to a much wider audience. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5.
*1994. *I think the Offspring are totally underrated, but you also have to be in a pretty specific mood to listen to a whole album. *Lots of hits here - Gotta Get Away, Something to Believe In, Come Out and Play, and Self Esteem. *Really like these guys, so 4 stars it is. RATING - 7.5/10
I have no idea if this is a "good" album from an artistic standpoint, but it's still a fun listen.
7/10. There are good songs but there is very little variation in the album
Ive always overlooked the Offspring, and this album only has one song I was familiar with (Self Esteem), but it was a fun album especially listening at the gym. Packed full of energy and good hooks. Come Out and Play and Genocide were the two main standouts. 7/10
Overall really good, I was only familiar with the radio tracks previously. The whole thing sounded like high school. Didn't like the interludes, I don't know why those were so prevalent for a while there. 4/5.
It's been a long time since I've heard this album or any song from this band, due to me getting a bit boring of their sound. But hearing it now, it feels incredibly refreshing and I actually had a really great time listening to this. Being a skate punk record, this album is full of energy and frenetic speed with some touches of catchy and simple melodies to make it a singalong experience. While most of the songs focus on being very fast punk, there are also some tracks that slow down and focus way more on being melodic, like "Gotta Get Away", "Come Out and Play (Keep'Em Separated)", "Self Esteem" and the Ska Punk song "What Happened to You?". I do also like a lot the themes focusing on youthful rebellion and social criticism, like in "Nitro (Youth Energy)", "Not the One" or "Smash". However, I do have a little problem with this album. I noticed that there is a minimum, but noticeable, amount of clipping in the sound that makes it feel a bit dusty. It is an incredibly small detail and not a thing that heavily affects my experience, but it is something I wanted to point out. So overall, really fun experience. An album full of energy and fun moments.
I was not a fan of this back when it came out. I was aware of Self Esteem and thought it was pretty silly at the time. I was just into fatherhood and that was most of my focus. I still kept up with music, but wasn't listening as much as I had been. But I also assumed this wasn't my thing, as I didn't think they were "serious" artists like those in the grunge scene. With all of that, I was uncertain about listening today. But very quickly I found myself getting into it. I thought Nitro was a very cool song, and really liked Gotta Get Away (which I'd heard before but didn't know was their song). There was some songs that were just filler, but then I really liked Not the One as well. I enjoy when albums I think I won't like surprise me. Smash won't become a favorite, but it was worth the listen.
It’s kinda like a more accessible punk album.
I was busy yesterday, so I didn't get a chance to listen to this album until today. Out of curiosity, I checked what my album would be after this. Yank Crime by Drive Like Jehu. Which literally came out in the same month as this! I don't want to say too much about Smash because I REALLY want to get to Yank Crime. But I just want y'all to know, this is a great straightforward skate punk album, even for me, someone who isn't really the genre at all outside of video games. But now, time to kick back, relax, and listen to some REAL punk rock...
Energetic album! Really tight musicality on drums/guitar.
Music to smoke meth to
type music that makes me think i can do a kickflip
I kind of dismissed The Offspring as a novelty band first time around, mostly due to Pretty Fly (for a White Guy) but this album absolutely rocks. Consistent and catchy with some pretty scathing lyrics thrown in. Glad to have had the chance to reappraise
4.25. There was no greater joy as a preteen than silently scream-singing along to Bad Habit on my Walkman so my parents couldn’t hear the swearing.
Don’t think I’ve ever heard of album or band. Love the intro. Right into nitro which is really good. Bad habit is also really fun. Good guitar/drums. more good guitar on gotta get away. This one has a catchy chorus and good vocals all around. Really nice solo towards the end too. Pretty sure I’ve heard gotta get away. Banger. Classic 90s rock song. Genocide is more of the same. Greta drums on this one. Catchy chorus, lyrics don’t have the most substance. Something to believe in is fine. Pretty generic song. Come out and play is a classic tho. Still hear it on the radio today. Sick guitar. Catchy lyrics. Wish it was longer honestly. I’ve heard self esteem also. This is another absolute classic. What an album this is up to this point. Self esteem is so well written. It’ll be a long time is fun too but not as good as the last 2. Great guitar again. Really good bass on kill boy. Works really well with vocals and guitar. Well produced song. What happened is another one that’s really well written. Topical. Good song. Really good solo on this one. Back half of this album is fast and furious. Kind of the theme of this album so it works. So alone is just ok. Filler song. Much better production on not the one. This song is really good again. Smash is just ok. The guitar riff is awesome. The lyrics leave me wanting more. Wish this was in the middle not the closing song. Probably would like it more. Overall this album blew away my expectations. Such a fun listen. Not many (if at all) bad songs. Worth the listen, and may even listen again. 4/5 stars.
Pretty good
3.8/5
What Happened To You ?
Solid 90s punk album. Really enjoyed it but I can only handle Dexter’s vocals for so long.
This album absolutely owned me when I was nine years old, even if Dexter's voice is a touch grating at times
Nitro (Youth Energy) - 4/5 Bad Habit - 3.5/5 Gotta Get Away - 3/5 Genocide - 4/5 Something to Believe In - 4/5 Come Out and Play - 5/5 Self Esteem - 4/5 It'll Be a Long Time - 4.5/5 Killboy Powerhead - 3/5 What Happened to You? - 4.5/5 So Alone - 4/5 Not the One - 4/5 Smash - 3/5
This is a solid 90's punk record. It has the sound from that time. The songs are catchy and the production is good. It was a hit record because it's a good record. It's not groundbreaking and it's not trying to be, it's just good rock music.
good hidden track
Es más un 3 cn algo largo. Par de temazos
Raw energy forged through pure passion. Love them! ★★★★
pretty good ngl. consistent but not repetitive.
Great sound. Consistent record. They do over rely on the oooohhh’s and yeeeesaaahhh’s when it comes to lyrics.
His voice grates a bit, but I challenge you to name a harder-rocking doctor of molecular biology.
A great punk album, raucous and humorous with some real emotions too. It’s high energy and fun to listen to, I like it
Some essential 90s anthems on this album. Great energy. Could have more variety in the sound.
Note : 4 À réécouter : Oui
Good
I got like 2 songs from them. It’s cool to hear more from them. 4 stars
Smashed the low energy. Noticed a few Bonham influences on the album, particularly, in track 2. Black Sabbath, huh? but you can tell they're American lol not my genre, only listened half of the album.
Punk will never be dead.
Super nostalgic.
I had imagined this as a 3 that gets bumped up to 4 by nostalgia, but I think it may have really earned the 4. The nostalgia case: For me The Offspring are a good symbol of all the different sounds that 90s alternative could embrace. Somehow after “Smells Like Teen Spirit” we got not just grunge but disaffected balladeers (Smashing Pumpkins) and power punk class clowns (Green Day) and meditative weirdos (Radiohead) and on and on and on. The Offspring were never my favorite band but I love that they fit right in with the rest of the group. After listening though I appreciate their distinctive guitar sound and songwriting style. “Come Out and Play” is catchy but it’s also pretty unconventional. Everybody knew you had to keep ‘em separated even though no one quite knew what they were. I had fun hanging out with the brains that produced that even though the next time I hear them it will probablyi be in yet another “I miss the 90s” mix.
Rett og slett en klassiker innefor sjangeren. All killer, no filler.
a lot of banging and crashing to be honest. not quite for me but good nonetheless.
I like the “radio host” guy who chimes in sometimes. First few songs were ok but the rest of it was peak
I admire musicians who commit to an idea and attack it with all their energy. The drums in particular are fantastic. On the other hand, I’m not likely to reach for something so consistently hostile. I added “Self Esteem” to my playlist.
As someone who doesn’t know a lot of Offspring music it’s pretty crazy how much of this I recognize While I don’t think this is their finest work it’s still pretty good, vocals are super recognizable and unique while still sounding good for the most part. Come Out and Play is so damn catchy, probably their best song that isn’t on Americana. I really do like Pop Punk a lot as a genre, takes everything I like about punk and makes it actually sound good I don’t think I’d have another 40 minutes of listening to the offspring in me unfortunately, his voice does absolutely get on your nerves after a while. Compared to some of their later work it does sound a little samey at times. Have gotten a lot of mediocre music over the last week so it’s nice to have an album that actually moves the needle in either direction
This is one that's grandfathered in from rock band 2 Love Come out and Play; super duper catchy riffs on top of each other. Very thrashy album, but still pop punk. I don't know why pop punk albums always have a irish sounding song in there; i think its meant to be an anthem but it sounds like an irish sea shanty to me lmao Pretty good. I don't know if i could listen to it back to back though
Very good and high energy. The only thing that made me mad on this album was the fact that there was a secret track that was just added onto the last song and so there was just 5 minutes of silence. I know it's unfair to say that, but it made me mad.
This didn’t hit more adult me the way it did for teenage me and Dexter’s voice bothered me more than it ever has before. Still fun to relisten to though. The hits are still great. Round up to 4/5 for the nostalgia.
Great album for the day. Revolutionary voice
Really fun album to listen to. I wouldn’t say punk is my thing but I definitely enjoy it more than I thought I would. Album keeps the energy up throughout and really easy to throw on if this is the vibe you’re looking for that day. I see myself coming back to this and checking out more of the Offspring.
So many early high school memories to this album. It defines an entire generation of mid 90’s kids who thought they were badass.
some great songs in it
Nothing really new and groundbreaking, but fun energetic music, the kind of I like to dance to
Für mich super wichtige Band in meiner musikalischen Sozialisation (The Offspring waren für mich der Schritt nach Bon Jovi und vor System Of A Down). Bei mir konkret war es "Ixnay On The Hombre", wobei "Smash" sicherlich ihr bestes Album ist.
good, fun album. brings back the old days
Fun and enjoyable enough in the moment to be a 3.5 rounded up, but I’m confident that I’ll never, voluntarily, listen to it again.
Was intended for this, not the Nick Cave album. Absolutely loved this as a kid. Very strong start to the album, but it meanders to a bit of a stop. Some of the lyrics I enjoyed as a 15 year old don't resonate now.
Insouciant
Great fun, better than I've excepted
Not huge on the vocals, they sound kinda annoying to me. Not bad tho. 7/10
LOVE THE INTRO Nitro is very nice, i liked the theme Gotta get away is a very known feeling of mie, but i don´t think that is very christian(maybe CDUDASA?) Genocide is very apolicalipse type od song, i liked it( THE NARRADOR!!!!! LOVE IT) Atheist and, at the same time, tired sinner vibes A nice sound on come out and play and a very on-point lyrics The more you suffer, the more it shows you really care(but no a very christian song, but a good intro) And another great song with It will be on time, a very nice and reflecive lyrics LOVE WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU!!!!! ITS AMAZING and without a curse, best in the album until now. They are genius, glory to God So alone reminds of ecclesiastes 4 and its a very dirty sound song So interesting lyrics, especially for a rock album. I already enjoy rock intruentalls, but their strong point, especially for me, is talking about such themes without getting dirty(cursing) i feel like repeat some sounds
ive heard funner and ive heard angrier, but still appeals to me
Great!
I did not think I was going to like this in the slightest but here we are with further affirmation for my enjoyment of pop punk. A lot of good songs here, Nitro (Youth Energy) and Gotta Get Away are personal standouts. Settling on a 4 for now but this could go up or down with time.
Solid punk album. I enjoyed hearing this one, as it was my first time hearing a full Offspring album, I’ve only ever heard their hits. It’s got some angst energy attached to it that I just love.
Pretty solid 90s punk album. Poppy, some ska, feels somewhat of it's time and also timeless.
Favorite Track: Come Out and Play
Las tengo en mi playlist "Sweat it out"
It only gets 4 stars and not 5 because it's not Americana. Otherwise a nostalgia banger.
Not looking forward to this. I can’t stand “self esteem”. I do love “bad Habit”. And other than come out and play I don’t know anything else. “Nitro” is pretty good. These vocals grate on me pretty quick. So I read up on the band. I had no idea the singer had a phd in molecular biology. I may not like the vocals, but have to respect him as a person, songwriter, and scientist. This guy makes me feel like I’ve wasted my time. 😂 I expected to hate this album. I’m enjoying it. I skipped “self esteem”. I think it was just radio that killed it for me.
Not my kind of music, but they are very good songs.
4.5/5 stars, i really liked the pop punk style and it reminds me a whole lot of green day Dookie! album. top three: (1)What happened to you? - dude this one ROCKED. I loveddd to the instumental "What in the world happened to you 🎸🕺" (2)Nitro - FUN WAY TO START AN ALBUM!! AHH (3)something to beleive in - this one was good as well! liked the guitar. songs i didn't save: (1)bad habit - idk why, didn't like this one (2)not the one - idk why either. i didnt rock w it.
had a talking stage with a guy who was obsessed with the offspring. i think i get it now.
I loved this album. The energy was amazing. It reminded me of songs I heard in my youth that I have forgot about and it really gets you hype. The one caveat I would say is sonically a lot of it starts to meld together and sound very similar.
Better than Coldplay
Not bad, a bit over the top at times but still worth a listen.
Smash was part of the soundtrack of my teenage years. For sheer nostalgia, I wanted to rate this record five stars. The re-listen was a great joy. I was tgis close to shouting out ‘stupid dumbshit goddamn motherfuckers’, but luckily I realized I was in a public place. The energy is still off te charts, but lyrically and musically, it hasn’t aged that well. Smash is not as timeless as I hoped. Still, four stars
It was fun
new to me, few good songs added. drums good throughout
Makes you want to skate
Liked: Bad Habit, Gotta Get Away, Genocide, Come Out and Play Added: Gotta Get Away, Come Out and Play, Self Esteem (already added)
Dexter? My molecular biology professor?
Ahhhhh, it's time to relax, and you know what that means, a glass of wine, your favourite easy chair, and of course this compact disc playing and your home stereo. So go on, indulge yourself, that's right, kick off your shoes, put your feet up, lean back and just enjoy the melodies. After all, music soothes even the savage beasts.
I love the album, so raw and fun!
Enjoyed 4*
I had this in my CD collection. It was great.
I'm giving this an extra point for nostalgia. This is one of the two albums I bought for myself when I decided to venture out to newer and edgier music. The other one was Green Day's Dookie, which has already been on this list.
high energy and packed to the brim with classics, great baseline for The Offspring.
Ready for a good sound, loved this album like a trip that take you at point A and leave you at point B.
3.5
Ooh 90s Punk , fun to listen to . Not as ground breaking as real punk :) more grunge than the Rammones but fast, loud and overall fun
Nice
So many bangers! Love the energy of the early Offspring. I really enjoyed this even if the last few songs were a little bland. The rest was great! Favourite songs: Genocide, All I Want, Come Out And Play, Gotta Get Away and Bad Habit.
First listen after at least 20 years and it still kicks. This is one of the albums I grew up with and I still like it. Although I doesn't have the same feelings than back then, it gave me a warm feeling of nostalgia. Fav: Smash
Ahh, good ol' pop-punk. Soothes even the most savage beasts. Probably not for everyone and that's OK. This kind of music always clicked with me, however, mainly stemming from playing all of the Tony Hawk games and getting into skateboarding back in the day. The longevity of a group like the Offspring is impressive too. But "Smash" really signaled a breakthrough for the group and played a role in the pop-punk "surge" of sorts. For that, I give many thanks. Tracks such as "Come Out and Play", "Self-Esteem", and even "Genocide" are great examples of the Offspring's no frills and "in your face" style that they bring. All of this on a $20k budget too. Pop-punk will always be my comfort music and I wish that there was more representation on this list to be honest.
some of my all time favs on this album, crazy i havent listened to it before
A classic from the golden age of skate punk. Fun and high energy, well worth the listen front to back
Solid album, banger tracks, at times surprisingly deep lyricism
Yeah just a little iconic. Last if their best years (not that the successors were bad mind you). Love the energy.
I miss when life sounded like this album. Life used to be so simple, even with the angst, life was so full of optimism and excitement for the future. Life is still cool and all now but this album reminded me how much I took my "younger youth" for granted.
honestly liked it more thsb i thought i would. the outro in ladt track was great
90s rock is so dear to my heart.
This is a smash!
I didn't know what to expect coming into this project. I've heard the name 'Offspring' before, but when I thought of it, no music I knew came to mind. I love punk, stuff like the Dead Kennedys and Bad Brains are so fun and catchy, so it makes sense why I would love something like this. I'm glad I was able to check this project out because it has such a clean sound while still dabbling in the murkiness of skate punk. I really felt like I was in California on these cool Minnesota days listening to it.
As a 90s kid, Offspring is always a fan favorite. Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated) is played often for a reason.
I’ve never wanted to recklessly drive more. 3.5/5
A fun skaterpunk album, it is short but great.
This is a very good album a lot of energy and catchy tunes but towards the end it's too much of the same. Has to be a 4
A lot better than I anticipated. I've dabbled in Offspring here and there, but never turn into them. I was worried that they would be harder or crasser than I would usually like. But I liked this album!
Smashingly fine 7/10
Good, rock mood.
Bra!
Based on my first listen, this was a very good album. I grew up listening to punk from my dad, so listening to this album reminded me of when I was a kid listening to my dad's music in the car. There really wasn't a dull moment in this album, and even tho this isn't the type of music I currently listen to, I very much enjoyed each song. It does get slightly repetitive over time, but it's not too overbearing. This album may have opened the doors for me when it comes to punk rock. Hate to say it, but sometimes my dad can be right.
I think this is their best album. The voice can be annoying sometimes but I love the homages to punk and ska. Incredible lyrics too.
Good album with some absolute bangers. I think this band is underrated. They deliver straight forward rock mixed with some humour at times.
Heavy metal easy to listen to fav track what happened to you. Much better than I thought. I’d recommend.
Verkligen 90-talspunk!
håller förvånansvärt bra idag!
Not super impressive but when it rocks it ROCKS
This isn't the greatest album ever, but it is fun. It is just straight dumb fun. Come Out and Play is their greatest song as far as I am concerned, that riff is just so much fun, but Self Esteem is a close 2nd. This isn't the most sophisticated album ever, but I enjoyed it. Low 4.
7/10
Nostalgic. Brings me back to my childhood.
Solid songs all the way through. I can see why people would say they ripped off nirvana at times, but all the songs are great and i enjoyed them!! Two thumbs up from me
Ver good album
- PUNK AND HARCORE but it’s still good and for what it is, it’s definitely fucking awesome. Most songs are pretty motivated by hardship, freedom and world issues, along with some really sharp riffs, and it’s amazing, kind of like the setup for more pop punk and more melodic hardcore in its near future. Definitely have a soft spot for really edgy and bouncy punk. Some tracks are quick and some are ska, super duper sick, super duper punk.
I think I like this now more now than when it was first released.
Super solid punk rock album.
Early 90s punk rock.
I know it. I love it. It doesn’t get old.
Forgot how good this album was! Amazing tunes.
love the offspring
Album was really good most of the songs were really good. This album felt like the word adrenaline it was fire
Made me feel like a cool kid.
Best Track - "Self Esteem"
3,5/5
All killer no filler. Forgot how amazing this album is. It’s not quite weezer blue album…but even the deep cuts are great on here.
HULK SMASH!!! Inhoudelijk spraken Come Out and Play en Not the One mij het meeste aan. Not the One vind ik heel krachtig. Liked songs: Gotta Get Away Genocide Come Out and Play Self Esteem Not the One
I recall reading a review of Led Zeppelin (1969) where the reviewer questioned why the band was still so popular—or even relevant—suggesting its appeal was mostly older listeners clinging to their glory days. The same argument could probably be made for Smash and Gen X/early Gen Y. My daughter was quick to tell me this music was awful, and that she wasn’t surprised The Offspring were never as big as Green Day. Although they weren’t my favourite punk rock band at the time, there’s no denying they helped bring the genre back to the forefront. That said, I personally always enjoyed this album. There’s definitely something to be said for nostalgia, and revisiting Smash was a welcome reprieve from a lot of the junk we’ve been subjected to lately. A solid 3.5, but I’m rounding up for old times’ sake.
I’ve always enjoyed the popular songs by The Offspring. Listening to this album led me to listen to several other albums in their catalog. Turns out, I’m a fan!
