Transcendental.

Schaar mezelf nooit echt onder de vele fans van deze hard rock-giganten, maar dit is een onmiskenbaar monument in de rockgeschiedenis. En naast dat het gewoon bij vlagen geweldig rockt ('Black Dog', 'Rock and Roll'), weet hij deze no-nonsense songs ook subtiel te doseren met blues, folk en roots rock. Het zorgt ervoor dat zelfs de niet doorgewinterde hardrockers echt met gemak door deze plaat fietsen. 'The Battle of Evermore' (met een geweldige bijdrage van Sandy Denny van Fairport Convention) en 'Going to California' breken heerlijk het hoge tempo. Classic album with lots of classic songs. It's got a little bit of everything Led Zeppelin does well: blistering rock 'n' roll (including "Rock and Roll"), psychedelic folk rock, and heavy metal. For whatever reason though, it's the one Led Zeppelin album from their classic period that I feel the least personal connection to. Maybe that's because a bunch of these songs -- "Black Dog," "Rock and Roll," and "Stairway to Heaven" -- have been played so much on classic rock radio and in commercials. It's hard for me to hear them with fresh ears. It's still a great album, but for whatever reason, I gravitate emotionally more toward some of their other albums. "When the Levee Breaks" is incredible though! I think that's my favorite song here. It's got such a sexy riff and groove. I was really jamming to that one today!

Arguably the best album by arguably the best rock band ever. It deserves all the acclaim, the love, and the adoration of the masses. It's got their classic groovy hard rocking songs like Black Dog, it's got their timeless ethereal epic Stairway to Heaven, it's got their Lord of the Rings folk adventure in The Battle of Evermore, it's got their stunningly beautiful moments like all of "Going to California", and it ends on an amazing cover of "When the Levee Breaks". Every track is amazing. Jimmy Page's guitar playing is masterful. It's jam packed with slanky lazy-yet-crisp overdriven moments, and it's so dynamic and yet still cohesive with his overall music vocabulary. John Bonham's drumming is at full force here. "Rock and Roll" is one of the great classic rock drum beats, and I love that he knows exactly when to overdo a beat, and when to take a step back and let the others shine. John Paul Jones is a perfect style of superglue to all of the band around him. His bass on "Rock and Roll" really drives the song in an incredible high energy war of attrition between him and John Bonham. How one of them doesn't get tired a minute into the song is amazing to me. And of course, Robert Plant's voice is maybe as close to perfect as you can get on a recording. It is soft and intimate, it is loud and aggressive, it's emotional, it's so wonderfully tied into the band. Great unique lyrics too. The time period in my life where I listened to "Stairway to Heaven" the most was probably when I was in my teens. I dove pretty deep into the conspiracy rabbit holes around this song and all the alleged Aleister Crowley occult connections. That stuff has always interested me but 13 year old me was really fascinated (and probably a little frightened) by it, so I remember listening to all of the chopped up versions of the song, and the reversed clips and all of that. Since then I've of course heard this song throughout my life, but it feels almost a little less epic now? I am 36 now, and maybe time just moves a bit faster, as an 8 minute song can be listened to while you drink a cup of coffee. When I was younger, this song was somehow 15 to 30 minutes... it was an experience. It's not to take away from the song, more so just something that I recognize in my own life and music-listening-experience. Anecdote aside, this song is one of the best ever. It encompasses everything that is great with Led Zeppelin, and this song alone would make this album a 5/5. This album captures the ethos of this project as well as any. It is a record that transcends music taste, that transcends generations; it is truly timeless, and one of the best works of art ever created. It's a clear 5/5, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was the highest rated album on this 1001 list.

Killer songs throughout except maybe four sticks, that one was weird.

My favourite Led Zep album. So many riffs. So many classics. Starts hard and finishes strong. Well sequenced track list. This album is a journey through genre and feeling. It's really fantastic. Black Dog! Rock and Roll!! They rock hard. All hepped up on rock and need a rest after the first two tracks? Battle of Evermore will give you a break. Feeling calm now? Fricking Stairway will trick you and bring you from placid vibe back up to rock Nirvana again, ready for a cruisy Misty Mountain Hop. If there's any filler it's maybe Four Sticks, but not really, it just moves your along and before you know it you're going to California. String and satisfying Bluesy finish with When the Levee Breaks, and I could almost go round again. It's just a well rounded, thoughtfully structured powerhouse made by a band at their peak. Morrissey couldn't dream of making anything this good. Five stars.

Easy 5. For me, this is the best Led Zeppelin album. At first I thought I could just give it 5 stars without listening, because it has been listened a lot. But then I thought, that wouldn't be fair. So I listened it on the vinyl. Just because I can. 😎😁

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? Nearly every song on this album is a classic and they come together to make the album a masterpiece. If you like rock, especially progressive/hard rock with fantasy-themed lyrics, this is your holy grail, your One Ring. 5+⭐️

Hadn't listened to this one in a while, as I overplayed a lot of the songs when I was a teenager. Forgot how great this album is! Not a bad song on it and many of Zeppelin's best. John Bonham's ferocious drumming is the highlight, especially on When the Levie Breaks.

Going to California is such a beautiful song man. This album was 42 minutes of pure euphoria, it almost felt too short. I wish I had more time so I guess I’ll just have to spin that mfer back again!

Every track outstanding

Really enjoyed this one as I was working outside, and will listen to it again. Intricate orchestrations, throbbing blues bass lines, screaming guitars, soaring vocals, what's not to like.

Fun listen! Great instrumentals and good vocal work. 'Stairway to Heaven' is my fave and and all time classic.

OVERALL: This is going to be my third 5 in a row. So many riffs, most of which are simple but are all incredible. Everything is either a great rock banger or a great acoustic song (The Battle of Evermore is also just kinda there). Insanely good guitars, great atmosphere. Stairway to Heaven and When The Levee Breaks are both incredible classics, and for good reason. It's really hard to argue for this being anything lower than a 5, and I also don't want to write a lot so just read the song reviews below. SONG AVG: 9.025 PERSONAL RATING: 9/10 Black Dog: This would have been a perfect song if the vocals weren't like that. The vocals are good, but I don't think they fit all that well. Other than that, phenomenal intro, incredible riff, incredible song. 9.95/10 Rock And Roll: Banger. A bit more like the blues rather than rock and roll, but still great regardless. Fun, although not the most musically interesting. 9.75/10 The Battle of Evermore: Great vocals, but I don't think that a mandolin should've been used. Pretty big tone shift from Rock And Roll. I feel like the lyrics are a bit corny, but I can't really hear them well when I'm just listening casually. It sounds good, but I feel like it could've been much better if they used a guitar instead of a mandolin. 7.75/10 Stairway to Heaven: Come on. It's their biggest song for a reason. Probably the most iconic guitar riff of all time. Anything I could say about it has already been said. 10/10 Misty Mountain Hop: Such a simple riff, but it goes so hard. Nice drumming as well. Very catchy, but I feel like it goes on for a bit too long. 9.25/10 Four Sticks: This feels like what someone who only knows the idea of Radiohead thinks a Radiohead song sounds like. Pretty good, but it feels like it kinda drags on. Reminds me of a Can song, but significantly less interesting with slightly worse vocals. 7.5/10 Going to California: Boring. When I'm listening to Led Zeppelin, I'm not expecting something like this. With that being said, this is a great acoustic song. It's just surprisingly forgettable. 8/10 When the Levee Breaks: Shortest 7 minutes of my life. Less recognized than Stairway, but equally as acclaimed. Great dark and hypnotic atmosphere, such a great outro that is great at defining the album. 10/10

First Led Zep to turn up on the list. Always good to get an album already owned. Brilliant openers and for me the last great Led Zep album.

Everything about this album is amazing, Great mix of hard rock and then a folksy element with the mandolin driven songs. The vocals are amazing, love the sound of the drums and then some of the most iconic guitar riffs. A band at the peak of their powers.

A classic. The LOTR of Albums.

Heard it countless times, each time is an absolute treat. One of the greatest hard rock albums ever.

Ok this is one Ive owned for many, many, many years and play regularlyIt's heavy, mystical, bluesy, and timeless. Like most people I bought the album on the strength of Stairway To Heaven, but black dog, when the levee breaks and misty mountain hop kept me playing it over and over. This is not denigrate the other tracks, I defy anyone to say one of them isn't a banger. Couldn't recommend this enough. A must own.

My ninth album since starting this. The first one to get five stars. As I rock out to this gem for the umpteenth time. There is not much to say or break down, I'm just going to listen and let my ears be happy.

Masterpeice.

This has always been my favorite Zeppelin album, and it totally holds up. I think it's my ideal blend of folk and rock elements while maintaining an identity that doesn't feel derivative.

What hasn't been said? They're beat studio album.

This is Led Zeppelin at their finest. This album is banger after banger without letting up. Despite never listening to this album before, I know every track because they're all classics and standard for any halfway decent classic rock radio station. "Stairway to Heaven" is, well, is THE classic rock song, but even without this song, the album is amazing. I don't know what I can add that others haven't, but I'll say some things anyway. The drumming and guitar are just so, so perfect in every song. Robert Plant's vocals can be abrasive and mesmerizing at the same time. Every song is placed well and adds to the rise and fall of the album, leading to such a satisfying listen. The lyrics are well done--just enough to grab interest without being overbearing, like in "Going to California," or contain catchy hooks, like in "Misty Mountain Hop." I wouldn't change a damn thing about this album.

This album fucks so hard it's not even fair. It's so dank, hobbits want to smoke it. It's so good, their Greatest Hits is just this album played twice.

This is the album that won me over after years and years of resistance. I was a firm believer that if you liked The Doors, you didn’t like Led Zeppelin. It went the same the other way. It’s what I saw around me in my musical journey with friends. There was no in between from what I saw. I have since learned that there is enough room in the musical landscape for both bands and many more. This is a pretty much flawless album by them. I mean, the first 4 of 5 songs are top hits. That’s not a greatest hits album people. That was just a band putting out their next effort. The only flaw is The Battle of Evermore. Waaaaayyyy too hippy sounding. It’s probably the Joni Mitchell voice in the song. I don’t stand for that peace and love voice nor the shit. War and hate is my realm. Ok anyways. Good album. It’s timeless as in it will be on a top list from here to eternity. Write that down. Choice cut: Going to California

Editing this from a 4 to a 5, because this album is, obviously, a 5. I'm not massive on Led Zeppelin, mainly because I don't really like Robert Plant's voice, but this album undeniably has a higher density of quality than 99.9% of other albums.

I read this article once (I want to say it was penned by Chuck Klosterman, but AI was no help in confirming) in which a bunch of straight dudes were asked, "if you had to sleep with another dude, who would it be?" The overwhelming response was Robert Plant. I'm telling you this because I feel compelled to write something interesting about Led Zep that hasn't already been said a gazillion times. They're the greatest rock n roll band of all time. Anyone who doesn't give this album 5 stars is an edgelord, a pearl clutcher, or one of those dudes I just mentioned who isn't ready to to confront their feelings about Robert Plant.

From the hills of the misty mountains to the Mississippi delta, this album rips. I was traveling and didn’t have time for a lengthy review but I wanted to pop back in and make it clear that this may be the best rock album of all time and maybe is my favorite ever. The big 4 get all the love but evermore, misty mountain, four sticks and especially going to California are fucking awesome. Ok back out.

1. Banger 2. Keep your foot on the motherfucking pedal baby. That long screech followed by that nifty lick *chef's kiss* Also, the bombast of the drums in this album so far is peak 3. slow it down, haunting duet vocals, mandolins aplenty, and we're talking LOTR; I feel like I've been transported to Middle Earth, stop I can only get so erect 4. Are you kidding me?? What?? This? This ... masterpiece? The slow build from the ethereal to the hot and heavy? Mama Mia, we got a spicy meatball here. 5. how about a little jaunt to take the edge off. And god damn, those drums 6. Driven by the rollicking main lick, I think its underrated 7. A little reprieve before the big finale; still has some edge though 8. that harmonica haunts my dreams and nightmares. Truly one of the greatest rock n roll albums of all time 0/5

Don’t need to say much about this. All killer, no filler, one of the many 5-star Zep records. I skip Stairway most of the time, but that’s just a personal preference (denied!). Damn, trying to find something nit-picky to say about this record, but I’m coming up with nothing.

This might be a hot take but Led Zeppelin,,,,, is pretty good. I loved every bit of even the most self-indulgent noodling bits. Also this is my first time listening to IV all the way through despite being raised on Zep, and my god is putting Stairway right after The Battle of Evermore a CHOICE

Listened to the original vinyl, CD and remastered CD of this hard rocking classic. Definitely benefits from the big bass and fuzzy sound of the big home stereo. Black Dog, Stairway to Heaven and Going to California never get old, even though I've heard them a million times. Just a great album.

May be the finest side A in rock history

The best Led Zeppelin album and the third best Sandy Denny album.

My dad never listened to led zeppelin. Hated Robert plants voice. The bloody weirdo (my dad, not Robert Plant). Meant I had to discover them on my own later, meant I missed out on a lot of references and jokes over the years and later on spent a lot of time going "oh... Stairway, I see". They're quite good aren't they. Even if I'm heavily expecting all the allegations to be confirmed (those that haven't already) the second they all die and even if they ripped off 75% of all their riffs. This one is especially good.

GREAT! Always on deck

After getting Led Zeppelin's debut as album #28 on my journey, I got to skip to their fourth album today. This is a real treat because I consider IV the peak of their blues-influenced hard rock songcraft. Every song on this album is as enjoyable as when I first heard them. From the opening bouncing riffs and Robert Plant's wails on "Black Dog", to the updated blues standard of "Rock and Roll", to the fantasy narrative duet between Plant and Sandy Denny on "The Battle of Evermore", to the eight-minute epic that is "Stairway to Heaven", to the electric piano riff of "Misty Mountain Hop", to John Bonham's complex drumming pattern on "Four Sticks", to the serene acoustic ballad "Going to California" as a neat tribute to Joni Mitchell, culminating in the otherworldly stomp that is their cover of Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy's "When the Levee Breaks". Not a single moment felt wasted here, as everyone in the group gave an outstanding performance, elevated by top-notch production from Jimmy Page. There's not much else I need to say here. Led Zeppelin IV set a high standard for later hard rock acts to follow.

A Detroit station used to play Stairway to Heaven every night at midnight and thy is pretty much the perfect time to listen to it.

I’m not the biggest Led Zeppelin fan but I enjoyed this way more than I was expecting. Smooth listen to have in the background. Banger after banger. Could not end on a better note, I love When the Levee Breaks.

The best LZ album probably

If you had asked me before embarking on this project how I’d rate this album and Led Zeppelin in general, I’d probably have said a strong 3 ⭐️ to middling 4 ⭐️ and have said something about how it’s got some good songs and the musicianship is good, but it’s overplayed, overhyped, and maybe something about them being plagiarists. This project has shown me the true depth, breadth and scope of all the truly bad and, what’s more, simply forgettable music that exists in the world and has allowed me to listen to Led Zeppelin with somewhat fresh ears. When I do, it’s evident that the songs on this record are so incredibly popular because they are just that good. The allegations of plagiarism that are often lodged against LZ I think are contradicted by their massive success in their time and their staying power 50+ years later. They were heavily inspired by blues music, yes, as many artists at the time were. On some songs this is a more direct and obvious inspiration, like “When the Levee Breaks”, but they still manage to form it into a sound that is very much their own and unlike anything else that was going on at the time. It is bluesy and heavy and medieval and harmonic and anthemic and loud and just… unmistakably Led Zeppelin. Could they have done more to recognize the blues artists they were inspired by and share some of the obscene wealth and stardom they accumulated? Yeah, they could have and probably should’ve. But I do not think they were plagiarists, and them being bad people in other respects is pretty thoroughly documented anyway. So. In other news I appreciate that they have done more PR for the mandolin in popular music than almost any other group/musician in recent times. It’s really hard to single out favorite tracks from an album with only eight tracks when 6 of them are as absolutely massive of songs as “Black Dog” or “Stairway to Heaven”… but if I had to choose, I really just love “Stairway to Heaven”. The multi-part composition gets me every time. Their reinvention of “When the Levee Breaks” is a close second for me, and “Black Dog” and “Rock and Roll” are of an equal tier not far below. Deductions to “Battle of Evermore” and “Misty Mountain Hop” for being about nerdy LOTR shit (just kidding, but not really. Sort of.) Of all the categorically classic “classic rock” bands, Led Zeppelin has always been among my favorites, and I’m glad this project has renewed my appreciation for their music to some extent. ‘IV’ gets a resounding hell yeah 🤘 from me.

One of the all time greats. 5 stars just for Stairway to Heaven. This was one of those albums that introduced me to a new (to me) genre of music at a young age. Should be required listening for everyone.

Great album

I didn't even realize how ingrained in my brain this album is. I sank into it like it was the old couch I grew up on. The flow and feel of this is something that is rare nowadays I feel like, and I miss it a lot. 5/5, no doubt.

This album is threaded so deeply throughout my entire life that it's challenging to try to listen to it with fresh ears. I find myself examining it through the lens of sound engineering and songwriting. Bonzo's brass sounds amazing and I hate the rest of his kit. The snare is thin and the toms are tuned cardboard. The instrumentation throughout is impressively varied, well recorded and mixed. The songs are dynamic, interesting in form, and well crafted. Hooks abound and I really like the use of dissonance that I never zeroed in on before this listen. I also really like the layering of the instruments. Sooo much going on in every song but they don't seem to trip over one another or get in each other's way. Kudos to the band for their choices and to the engineers for keeping things clean. Most songs feel longer than they are, which I think is because there is so much going on. Not a typical fourth album by any means. Most bands run out of ideas by their second album. Zep definitely flexes in a lot of dimensions on this album.

Brilliant album containing arguably the greatest song of all time

A timeless classic, even if it’s not their best and sort of at the back-end of their greatness. There’s so much depth to this album with an incredibly stunning finale.

Iconic album that is near perfect end to end. When the Levee Breaks is possibly my favorite LZ song ever, and for someone looking to get in to Zeppelin this is an easy one to step into.

I worshipped this record when I was a teenager. There was a period where I thought “Stairway to Heaven” was the most beautiful song ever, and I’d listen on headphones to ease myself to sleep. So, does it hold up to my personal and general cultural lore? Goddamn right it does! Every track is a standout. Zep is undefeated, this remains a 5.

Zeppelin IV is packed with classics and it's probably my favorite of their albums. Of course there's Stairway to Heaven which is a masterpiece but we can't forget Black Dog, Rock and Roll, and When the Levee Breaks. The balance between the melodic rock and smooth guitar solos is delightful.

This is another album from my childhood that I’ve heard more times than I can count. It’s a classic for so many reasons—whether it’s the sheer number of legendary rock anthems, the musicianship, or the variety of styles packed into one album. You get hard rock and early metal, blues and folk rock, and even a touch of prog, especially on “Stairway to Heaven.”

Story time: When I had first started dating Elizabeth she came to my dad's for Sunday night dinner (Maryellen was there) and we were sitting around the table post-meal talking, which was kind of a Tipton tradition passed down from my grandparents. Dad was telling us that he had seen a VH-1 thing about the greatest rock n' roll bands of all time and he was going through the list from memory. When he got to #3, he told us - to our shock - that it was Def Leppard. It turned into a big Tipton-style argument, as I am sure you can imagine, with Maryellen and me absolutely incredulous and refusing to believe that what he said was true. Elizabeth was probably simultaneously entertained and looking for a way to politely leave. After at least ten minutes of this - and depending on who is telling the story it was closer to half an hour - Dad somewhat sheepishly said "Oh wait, I think it was actually Led Zeppelin." This story still gets referenced any time anyone in the family says the names Def Leppard or Led Zeppelin.

Stairway to Heaven is one of the first songs I remember falling in love with. This album was one of my introductions to this time period of rock and it is likely the explanation as to how it became a favorite and why I specifically return to it when I am bored of my other favorite genres. I've had my issues with Led Zeppelin, here, doing this project, surprising issues, as I own two of their albums, but you know what, fuck it. I'm past "Battle of Evermore" and at 5:55 of "Stairway to Heaven" now - well, not now, I finished the track first, but that was the moment when: - this is a 5 star album; their boring, sleazy blues rock side be damned.

When you put aside all the 'greatest ever' nonsense that surrounds both the band and this album, this is a really good record. Yes, I occasionally get a little tired of some of the songs, and Stairway is over-praised and over-played, but when the guitar solo in that song starts, or the first drum hit thunders on When The Levee Breaks, or the Jew's harp opening to the album leads into "Hey Hey Mama" on Black Dog, it can still raise the pulse.

Although not to my personal taste, I cannot fail to give this album a positive review. Led Zeppelin are an iconic legendary band very popular globally so to give it a thumbs down purely based on my own musical preferences would be immature and churlish

Feel like Zep is the apotheosis of the semi-meandering dinosaur rock shit that I hate. And yet: they're pretty good. I don't get why people LOVE this stuff, but I do recognize that every member of the band is at the top of their game. This thing has so many hits it's hard to believe they all fit on one album. Hate all I want, there's no denying this joint is a masterpiece. A mercifully tight 42 minutes, too.

15/16 year old me (1975/76), this must have been the first Led Zep album I listened to with friends of the same ilk. Tastes change over the years and I moved away from this genre. It was good to listen to the full album again and give it the time it deserves to listen to completely back to back. Favourite tracks: The Battle of Evermore. Misty Mountain Hop. When the Levee Breaks. Prefer side 2. This deserves to go in.

An undeniable classic. These songs have touched your life somehow at some point. Even if you don't like Led Zeppelin (I'm not crazy about them, myself), you've at least enjoyed music that's been influenced by them. Gotta show the respect.

Led Zeppelin IV is an all time rock classic with brilliant musical performances in every imaginable way which creates an incredibly enjoyable, and varied, listen. The opening track “Black dog” by introduces some of the great things you will experience on the record including catchy lyrics, brilliant guitar work from Jimmy Page & great vocals. This track has a great energy. “Rock and roll” comes through with much of the same greatness. Brilliant solos on both tracks. The almost surreal “The battle of evermore” changes the pace of the album rather than adding another rock and roll track. And this is appreciated on the album. The iconic and profound “Stairway to heaven” is the centrepiece of the album and for good reason. It’s obviously one of the best rock songs ever written with one of the best solos ever, brilliant vocals & lyrics. Side 2 opens with the fun & groovy “misty mountain hop” before going into the mesmerising “four sticks” which features brilliant drumming and vocals in what is a really unique track on the album. “Going to California” is a fantastic acoustic track with a nice relaxing feel. The album ends on the slow burning blues rock banger that is “When the levee breaks”. I feel I can’t speak too much on this album without repeating over and over how brilliant every single performance is. From guitar, vocals, lyrics, bass, drums and even mandolin and harmonica. This is an all time rock masterpiece. And it doesn’t even stick to just one strict genre. All killer, no filler defined. An absolute must listen and one of the albums which defines rock & roll. 5/5.

The type of album that rewires your brain in the best way possible

I have an embarrassing confession. I didn’t hear this album until almost 10 years after its release. I was only familiar with Stairway. Roadtripping to Albion for my first ever cross country meet. My ultra cool classmate, a migrant from Portland, OR, world-wise and profoundly less naive, popped this cassette into his portable boombox and cranked it in the van. Out came the bombast of Black Dog. I did not know what to think. The production quality was lower than stuff I was playing at the time. And it was raw. Unlike any of the highly produced pop rock from REO, Journey, Foreigner, Styx, among others that had been dancing in my ears at that time. But I reveled in it. It was like I was taking my first secret sip of alcohol or first puff of a joint. So wrong, but you couldn’t help that it somehow felt right. It was decadent. Yet, for some unknown reason, I still didn’t delve into their catalog even though I can clearly remember the first time I heard this album. The full Zeppelin came later, beginning in college. After fully embracing Zeppelin, while I enjoy this album, it is not my favorite. A sacrilegious view among rock fans. Even more sacrilegious, Stairway to Heaven probably doesn’t even break into my top 10 Zep songs. The rawness and straightforward rock of Black Dog is still my fave off this album. Even though it is not my favorite, I probably consider this album to be their first truly complete effort. Instead of feeling somewhat disjointed, this is an outstanding piece of work that flows well from beginning to end.

Probably my favorite LZ. Not much I can say that hasn’t been said before… mostly would like to echo that it’s the most fully realized of their self-titled series - feel the most like “Led Zeppelin” out of all of them while still being incredibly tight. There’s not a single inessential song or even moment on this album. In my opinion, it’s the epitome of “1001 albums to listen to before you die”. 8 perfect songs for 43 minutes of perfect music. Even if Stairway to Heaven is slightly overrated. :) I remember listening to these albums for the first time in high school and being absolutely blown away that music from the late 60s - early 70s could sound THIS good. Even with more experience listening to music from this era, I still can’t get over how timeless the production and musical style of this album feels. Probably more of a testament to LZ’s influence on hard rock and metal generally, but all still the same.

Several classics, with Black Dog, Stairway to Heaven, and When the Levee Breaks, but there's something to like in just about every song, and there are several genres represented throughout the album (albeit with a rock tinged Led Zeppelin sound) The whole album is good, but Stairway to Heaven is on a whole other level, and almost makes the rest of the songs sound slightly worse in comparison.

A desert island album for me, personally.

Goddamnit. I'm so, so sick of the '70s rock on this list, and I have no background or interest in Zep, but this still wowed me. Maybe it's because I've already heard so many of these songs before, so I'm warmed up to them? Or because this wasn't as long or self-indulgent as I had expected? Sigh. Whatever, it's clearly a masterpiece and I'm mad about it!

The only sorta weak song on this one is Four Sticks but Going to California EASILY makes up for that

Led Zeppelin's best album, hands down. The pastoral cover artwork with no album title or band name gives the record a mystical feeling, almost like a found relic from some sort of ancient druid society. And of course, the songs are great, too. Every single one of the eight songs on here is among the band's greatest work. A very well-balanced mix of Hard Rock, Folk, Blues, and early Heavy Metal. Obvious 5. I was interested to recently learn that Sandy Denny is the backup vocalist on Battle of Evermore. So cool.

“No Stairway!? Denied!” “Stairway to Heaven” is overly ubiquitous, but the Wayne’s World gag and real life banning of the riff in guitar stores is overwrought. Despite that, “IV” is still a V, with “Battle of Evermore” and “When the Levee Breaks” as my standout favorites.

With two absolute bangers starting this album off, closing with the amazing When the Levee Breaks and with the iconic Stairway to Heaven sandwiched in between, how could this album be anything less than five stars. Zeppelin defines rock ‘n’ roll and this album defines Zeppelin.

Is Stairway to Heaven too long? Yes, but the second half of Stairway would be a top 10 LZ song in its own right. Led Zeppelin II might be my favorite album but When the Levee Breaks is the song I can't get out of my head.

This is one of Led Zeppelin’s strongest albums with LZ II and Houses Of The Holy. Seven of the Eight tracks are strong (Four Sticks being the lone exception) while there are several amazing songs. Black Dog’s call and response between vocals and instruments is great. And I love the passages where the drums and guitars are out of sync timing wise. Happy little accidents or maybe not accidents at all. Stairway To Heaven is over and under appreciated at the same time. Too many people try to go against the grain and downplay its brilliance because it’s too popular. Bollocks! The swinging groove to Misty Mountain Hop is so much fun. And the cover of When The Levee Breaks is awesome.

Led Zeppelin IV is the band’s magnum opus — the perfect storm of power, precision, and musical ambition. This one was ubiquitous to the point that guitar shops had to post signs banning anyone from playing “Stairway” under penalty of being kicked out of the store. 40 years of listening, and I still love this band to death. I don’t think there is any other band where I can say that every single second of every single record they ever did is still exciting to me. I know I’m old, but it’s amazing to me that many people have never heard this album.

Fantastic album full of huge hits, hard to pick a favorite for the 1001 playlist as there isn’t a bad choice. Great mastery in every part of this album, very easily 5/5, nothing else to say about it 🤘

For many it certainly is, and when you think about it, that is one MASSIVE song to start an album off with… Hey hey mama! I am really at a loss for words today. Don’t know what to say about this album that hasn’t been said before. So, I will leave with this thought… 4 1/2* for me, but that’s because I am NOT a LZ fanboy! Damnit… have listened to the album three more times, and mother fuckers… this is one of the GOAT!

Fantastic listen as always. Each track is incredible, and while I grew tired of “Stairway to Heaven” for some time, hearing it play in its preferred location as track 4, right in middle of this bluesy rockin’ and rompin’ record just made me realize how great that song and this album truly is. Another Led Zeppelin masterpiece.

Amazing

It’s the ultimate Zep, it borrows elements from their entire catalog, and balances between their musical prowess, their appetite for exploration, their nerdiness, and possibly signifies the peak of their connection to the root of music. It’s an amazing album by all accounts. Not my absolute favorite album, that probably resides the rock forward number II, however it is objectively their best.

This album is on my list of all-time favorites. It is arguably the best Led Zeppelin album, although "Rock and Roll" is probably one of my least favorite songs by LZ. Zeppelin's music is like sex: even if it's not the greatest, it's still good. I have heard "Stairway" a million times, and I always enjoy hearing it again. This one goes to 11.

Black Dog is what led me to learn the guitar. I would listen to that song on repeat before middle school, as if to internalize it or satiate myself enough to get through the day and get back to LZ4. 6/5.

These were all spinning daily on 105.7 WAPL in the fox valley, Wisco (and probably still are) The three most underrated tracks (if I can even say that) are Battle Of Evermore, Four Sticks and When The Levee Breaks (the other 5 tunes are absolutely top 1000 rock songs of all times). I spun these three the most to get something new from this album Jimmy page plays the hell out of a mandolin, Bonham spins up freakishly weird time signatures in Four Sticks - its in some funky 5/8 thing and alternates to something else (also the name is some direct reference about playing with 4 sticks - vibraphone style maybe - idk, not a drummer) and even the Beastie Boys couldnt resist sampling Levee. God damn. What a legendary album. Id give it 10 stars if I could

There is music before IV came out, and then there’s music after IV came out. IV set the yard stick for rock for decades - and remains a high point. Yes, Stairway has become almost a cliche, but so have sayings from Shakespeare, Dickens and Austin - they all share one thing: Our language, our culture is enriched by their existence. It’s that good.

What can I say about this album that hasn’t been said a million times before. The album is just non stop quality mind-bending classic rock anthems. The level of consistent quality on this album is unmatched by Led Zeppelins other projects and by most classic rock albums out there. Everyone in the band brings their A game to this one and it’s a legendary piece of music history for a reason. I think the word I would use to describe this album is hypnotic, what a fun way to spend 40 mins. 5/5

One of the biggest cliches in rock history, but it's so fucking good. What an album. The song I enjoyed most this time around was probably Going to California. And that Stairway solo... 🤤

Remember when I said in my "Physical Graffiti" review that that wasn't Led Zeppelin's best album and I knew it got better? Well...here we are. A PERFECT album. There isn't a bad song here. "Black Dog" is a FANTASTIC way to start an album, I wish I could hear "Stairway to Heaven" for the first time...the solo absolutely fucks, "Rock and Roll" is soooo good, "Going to California" is so beautiful, "Misty Mountain Hop" is so fun, "Four Sticks" is great, and "When the Levee Breaks" is such a great closer. "The Battle of Evermore" isn't my favorite song, but it's still pretty good. That being said...I'd like to tell a story: While I was waiting for the bus to go to high school my senior year, someone at my stop said they were going to pray for me for listening to "Stairway to Heaven." I was a sinner because "that isn't how you get into heaven and if I listened to that song I was going to go to hell." And I replied "it's Led Zeppelin man. Fuck off" Liked Songs: All of them, but "The Battle of Evermore" is my least favorite

This is the rock album. Where else could you find this stratospheric level of instrumentation and songwriting with such a marketability for all audiences? On their untitled fourth output in just two stellar years, Zeppelin interweave the cymbal-driven crashing of the blues rock and hard rock that enabled their initial success with the most enchanting of folk influences that enabled Stairway to Heaven to become the pillar of popular song that it so greatly deserves to be. Whole Lotta Love could have kept Zeppelin afloat in musical culture for decades, but with [IV], Plant, Page, Bonham and Jones will be at the very core of rock for eternity.

A classic album...Stairway to Heaven was (as was typical) my intro to Zeppelin. Loved this album as a kid but realized it was surpassed by other Zep albums (namely Houses and III). Going to California is a fantastic song, and still get chuckles over the blatant LOTR references. 5/5

5.0 5x or so. self explanatory, but this has been a favorite of mine for a very long time, and even though overplayed, it still has its magic

This was my entry point to Led Zeppelin. Then I bought the 4-CD box set and it was over for me. I loved Led Zeppelin and nearly everything they did. I think this is their best-known album just because it has Stairway to Heaven and Going to California on it. Every song is great, even Four Sticks, and I love this whole thing. It has pretty much everything you get from Zeppelin. Acoustic songs, bluesy rockers, epic rockers and John Bonham going bananas on the drums. I would suggest if someone wants to get into Zeppelin, then I would start here.

‘Led Zeppelin IV’ is the quintessential hard rock album. ‘Black Dog’, ‘Rock and Roll’, ‘Stairway To Heaven’, ‘When The Levee Breaks’, ‘The Battle Of Evermore’, and so on; It’s all killer, no filler and it’s stood the test of time in a way very, very few albums do. Somewhere out there, right now, some kid is listening to this record for the very first time and their mind is about to be blown the same way mine was many, many years ago. The adrenaline rush, the massive dopamine hit, the sheer joy. The next generation will listen to ‘IV’ and feel the same, and the next and the next. Such is the circle of life, and a small part of this albums enduring, monolithic legacy.

Hoy no ando de muy buen humor, y he estado a punto de darle un 4. Pero luego ha llegado When the Levee Breaks y se me ha pasado. I may give this a 4.5 if I could, but I really can't give it below 5 stars, personally, just due to the fact that it does have songs that are still impressive while also just being so monumental and influential. Even if you take out "Stairway to Heaven," there are still monster tracks like "Black Dog," "Misty Mountain Hop," and I really love "Going to California" as a quieter, beautiful and emotional song.

Classic

I don't listen to this album much now but it's been part of my life for over 50 years. It stands as one of the five greatest albums ever recorded - certainly within the rock/metal/blues part of the spectrum. It doesn't have a bad track, or anything remotely resembling a bad track. Every composition, performance and production is magnificent.

Wow, it's been a minute since I've listened and forgot how good it was. The only tough part is deciding if I like this one or LZ2 more. Nothing to say that hasn't been said 1000 times before. Timeless Rating: 4.9

Every track on this album is a banger. Side 1 starts off strong, veers into some really nice acoustic work, then smacks you with Stairway. Side 2 builds and builds then finishes strong with Levee. One of Led Zep's absolute best works.

a classic and beautiful album that encompasses the wide ranging sound of led zeppelin from the aggressive blues rock on Black Cat to the genre-defining rock ballad of Stairway to Heaven. It's such an easy listen that has clearly defining elements that reflect the famous Led Zeppelin sound.

A perfect rock record. Going to California and fours sticks are underrated led songs but all others are classic and don't need to be named just listened to. This is the album you get to introduce the band (although physical graffiti is their most ambitious and houses of the holy/2 and 1 have some of their best tracks, this is their definitive record.

Whereas the Stones brought a mix of blues and country to rock, Zeppelin used blues and bluegrass; that makes all the difference - that and the superb vocals. Each song on this album is great, and together they are balanced.

Essentially, a perfect album. So much talent in both musicianship and songwriting.

Initial thoughts: SIGH, another 70s rock album. counterpoint - Led Zeppelin kinda slaps. This is also one of my wife's favorites, so there's that. I'm not disappointed to see this pop up, to be honest. Dude. What can you say? Banger after banger after banger. There's honestly not a weak song on the album, it's actually astounding. Look, I don't adore this era of rock, but if I have to listen to it, *THIS* is the album to listen to! 4th album, 8 songs, 43 minutes, 5 stars.

Truly a classic. A great range of styles that encompass everything they’d done up to this point. Almost docked a point for Stairway after years spent working in guitar shops, but that’s more a me problem than a them problem
