Reviews (page 2 of 11)
I am sure I have heard this before, but I really don't know why I would have willingly listened to it
not for me
No
If this was a white artist singing about whores, would it be alright? No, of course not! I don't care who recorded this misogynistic shit, it's NEVER alright in any context. I'm old enough to remember this coming out, and it wasn't acceptable then, so you can't say we didn't know any better at the time. No excuses. The actual music is/was cool. The lyrics are not. I don't care if they were meant to be ironic or funny or whatever. They really do encourage braincell-deficient men to treat women badly. NO EXCUSES!
OK this may have a bit more substance than other hip-hop stuff but it's still basically just a constant stream of invective. So I don't regard myself as a prude, but I didn't enjoy my trip to Doggy Dogg World 😐
I can’t do this.
Decent production doesn't make up for how terrible this music actually is. Snoop seems like he's a super cool guy in real life. His music is the same as the rest of this kind of hip hop - misogynistic, needlessly violent, juvenile. Again, another example of an album that people call genius that is objectively bad music. Not for me. 1/5
This is so far from my personal taste I almost struggle to believe some people actually enjoy it. It's groovy but in terms of lyrics I'd say it perfectly matches the tacky, tasteless cover.
I didn't like the misogyny of gangster rap then and definitely not now.
Refuse to listen to this type of trash. I know enough to know I will hate it. I have a visceral reaction to this type of music and it ain’t good.
The excessive use of profanity makes this a poor choice for me. I don’t have a problem with the use of cursing in music. But this goes for shock value and fails. Almost unlistenable.
p720. 1993. 1 star. (C)rap. Dated, puerile, misogynistic, offensive rubbish straight from the gutter. People will listen to this in 20 years time and wonder how on earth it was ever allowed to be released. Sample lyrics: muthafucker/bitch/nigga/hoe/muthafucker/dick/nigga/fuck/muthafucker/nigga. Repeat ad infinitum and you too can be a best selling rapper.
I really dig the beats and overall production on this album, but once again, I just can’t stand the rapping or the lyrics. It’s just standard gangsta rap cliches; drugs, bitches, mfers, n***as, and blatant misogyny. Maybe I’m just grumpy because I’m on a string of bad albums and this is the third hip-hop album I’ve had in a row.
Fuck you Snoop!
Snoop doggy doo
Yeah it's basically more of Dr Dre's album, straps chronic bitches, terrible skits and the same lines over and over again. Terrible.
banger вайб гта санандреас тупо кайф
Such a trip to listen to this 30 years later. Such a good album and also wild to think that little 12 years later-old me was really singing along to these lyrics. I still know them all.
Y'all ready know
Definitely a classic. Who is the fem singer in Pump Pump?? She's so cool. My favorite part of this album are the instrumentals. Pretty sure that's Dr. Dres doing. It's fascinating just how involved this man was in rap and hiphop in the 90s.
Iconic album for a Friday morning drive to work
Bow Wow. Classic in so many ways.
The second half is weaker than the first, and I thought about a 4 as a result. But 5s need not be perfect, and I’ve given 5s to other albums that faded a little in their second half. Gin and Juice, What’s My Name, Gz and Hustlas, Lodi Dodi merit rounding up.
Snoop Dogg is the shit, biatch
Classic Snoop. One of my favs.
i cant listen with Lyrion-Server, why?
Smooth indeed
Esta buenisimo
This is one of the best rap albums of all time. The beats are amazing, and every song is a hit. Yeah, the lyrics aren't the greatest, but in terms of ear worms, this album is fantastic and I would give it 5 stars any day.
So happy to see this record on this list, as it should be. Obviously, the lyrics haven't aged well with respect to ethics or morals, but this is still a milestone in hip hop history. The production was so innovative and progressive at the time, transforming the landscape of beatmaking in hip hop. This probably was Snoop's only "great" album of his career, but he certainly found other ways to carry his brand through the years. Love this record and likely always will.
Hilarious. I'd love to party with Snoop.
I love Snoop so damn much.
um album mt icônico chrio de hits, funky pra caralho e mt divertido, mt snoop doggy dogg vc foi foda aqui 👏👏
bop
This is for sure one of my faves of all time time. It’s definitely upheld by some of the bangers like Lodi dodi but I mostly enjoyed. For me the album is between a 4 and a 5 but closer to the ones I voted 5 previously so gets a push up!
Love the G-funk production through this whole album. So many classics and almost no filler.
looked over at my boyfriend to realise we were bobbing our heads in unison and we were only on the second track. just saaaa good, so fire. gin and juice is the best song i've ever heard. this rap album makes me hopeful for the rest of the rap albums that may be here after pulling a few rap albums thus far and being unimpressed with them until i listened to this one from snoop i am hopeful moving forward with rap!!!!!!!!!! thanks snoopy
His best album, never to be topped
genre and era defining for a damn good reason.
Me gustó bastante jajaja
Seeing this album art, I pulled out my old CD and listened to the album. It's not all solid gold hits but it's hard not to like Snoop.
Dogg
G-funk paradise. A sequel, possibly greater, to the Chronic and the peak of Death Row.
Listening to Doggystyle as a person who's never paid attention to Snoop for his music before felt like being shown the archetypal blueprint for a whole era of music. Low rider beats, brash pornographic skits and empowering masc posturing that still hits a buzz so perfectly when you're strutting in the sun to it. Before this listen I'd maybe heard pieces of it, and certainly its vibe, in GTA San Andreas. But as set dressing rather than something I could personally invest in. But this album is a bop. 10/10 would listen again.
Classic
Een van mijn favoriete hiphop albums
Fire, can still here some albums from 2010s with influence from doggystyle
More "not safe for playing in the suburb neighborhood with the windows open" than I remembered, but I thoroughly enjoyed it
Great Bowie-helmed Glam. Probably Reed’s best overall solo album.
This has got to be one of the greatest hip hop records of all time!
This cover art is about the raunchiest shit ever conceived, which is very reflective of the lyrical content within. I'm personally of the opinion that you're allowed to be raunchy as long as your music is good enough to match, and Snoop Dogg accomplishes exactly that and then some. With Dr. Dre's golden production, here we have one of 90s West Coast's finest beats, to be played loud on some car speakers in the California sun (in snowy Canada with some shitty earbuds works too). Standouts: G Funk Intro • Gin and Juice • Tha Shiznit • Murder Was The Case • Serial Killa • Who Am I (What's My Name)? • Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None) • Gz and Hustlas
mil puntosss
god DAMN if this music isnt good as fuck. and funny as fuck. Except the horrid way they talk abt women and so forth. but the music itself is just so good
Will never stop being a classic! In my eyes the best West Coast rap album of all time.
5/5 wtf was I thinking? Classic for a reason.
Trop cool
Loveeedd its nasty language haha
Just an absolute banger. Its funny, sets an amazing mood and almost every song stands out from eachother- fantastic

This one is hard. In my last review I wrote about the difference between a 4 and a 5 for me, and it comes down to whether it speaks to me personally. When I got Dre’s Chronic (which might as well be a Snoop album) I rated it a 4 because the misogyny and violence was prominent enough that I couldn’t completely connect with it (as opposed to Nas’s Illmatic where I connected with the larger story he’s telling). Okay, so by those standards this would be a 4. But… it’s just too damn good to be a 4. When you let Snoop loose, he is just so inventive, so sly, so funny. And every guest appearance on the record is a classic too. I guess I am following my own standards because I am just so enthralled by his technique that I hear the pimps and hoes shit and I JUST DONT CARE. Which disturbs me a bit, to be honest, because I do care, I don’t want anyone to talk about women this way. I hate that even recently he’s talked about LGBT identities as if they were a bad thing. I want there to be some kind of accountability somewhere… but… at the same time I want it BECAUSE the music is so good, not in spite of it. Anyway, like I said, conflicted. But I can’t pretend it’s not brilliant.
Defining west coast rap, Snoop just came out hot with this one. Timeless tracks like Gin and Juice, What's My Name?? So effortlessly cool.
This is the shizzle ma nizzle. To all y'all clutching your pearls over the lyrics: clutch harder. As hard as you can for as long as you can. Now that they've passed out, us adults can discuss one of the top 10 rap albums of all time. Look, I don't endorse the lyrics or even defend them. But we don't review-bomb the Constitution because the authors owned slaves. We recognize the good and the bad and weigh them. In both cases, the good outweighs the bad, significantly. I don't know that Snoop was the first with that silky-smooth, laid-back flow, but he's likely the best and certainly the most prolific. The g-funk era kicked off here, and while I'm showing my west coast bias, it's my favorite kind of rap. No-brainer 5* across the board.
discazo total
this just slaps
Fun album with lots of bangers. The run of Murder Was the Case, Serial Killa, and Who Am I (What's My Name)? is an all-time great series of hip-hop tracks.
Great oldschool doggy
G-Funk at its finest.
Always a classic from start to finish. No skips.
This is a beautiful album. Very little dead area (slow or dull songs). Solid background music that the rap is layered upon. Snoops flow.
Simply one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever, and certainly among the best produced. An incredibly fun and easy listening hour of music, and the type of album that makes you want to listen to similar records for the rest of the day. No skips, the pinnacle of G-funk, and several classics. Favorite track: Gin and Juice
With his current mainstream fame, this almost felt like a caricature. However great fun to listen to and great musical and vocal delivery as long as you don’t take the lyrics too seriously!
amo a este drogadicto
5 stars if for no other reason than nostalgia
Classic
S-N-DOUBLE O-P! D-O-DOUBLE G! WHATS HIS MOTHERFUCKING NAME?
Album of my youth never gets old
Classic west coast 90’s rap
Topped it and went downhill from there
Pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this album, you can very clearly hear the influences which led to rap/hip hop albums with skits popularized by Kanye and Kendrick Lamar in the 2000s/2010s One of those rare 90s rap albums which has the combination of great lyrics with great backing music On top of everything, it's an album that has aged well despite being 30+ years old
yo snoop fünfer eh klar, das cover ! c
sooo smoove
Wow! Such comfort album, really liked it. 100% added to library
DONT CRY, DRY YA EYE
Tha Shiznit
Classic
amazing
G Fuck intro- gas Gin and juice- gas The Shiznit- Fire beat, so far each songs beats are so damn good, flow is a bit the same Lodi Dodi- again, like the beat, not my fav Murder was the Case- love Serial Killer- not bad, like the features but prob middle of the road for me Who am I- good beat, talk box is a bit weird to have on here For all my- good but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Aint no fun- liked it Doggy dogg world- fire Gz and hustlas- fire Pump pump- pretty good Album had incredible beats, lyrics were good, overall 9/10
Amazing album just absolutely a banger through and through
I loved the samples on this one. “Doggystyle is so good” - n8.
Some albums when they show up on this list I know are getting a 5. This is one of those albums. This came out when I was 15 years old and was at that time the album that I most looked forward to in my life surpassing "The Predator" which came out the year before and did not live up to my expectations. This album met and exceeded my expectations and was probably the most listened to album in my life until it was passed by "ATLiens" three years later. I have listened to some of the songs repeatedly over the last 30+ years but today was my first listen in probably 20 years. Thankfully this lived up to my memories and even the songs that I grew tired of before , I appreciated anew. I added "Gz up.." to the album as it was on the disc I purchased 33 years ago. Just a classic. The peak of Snoop, Death Row, and Gangster Rap.
Excellent, flow, prod! Parole parfois moyenne 5-/5
Возможно, лучший альбом Снуп Догга. Да, иногда пошлый (благо не русском), зато отличная музыка и начитка.
snoop doggyyyy doooooooogg
Its mind boggling how many incredible albums, from so many different genres, came out in the early 90s. This one is no exception. Perfect vibe.
It’s a classic how could anyone ever go wrong with this.
A classic G-Funk album to start the new year. You can pick out just about any track on the record to be a single.
This is quintessential 90s hip-hop. Very iconic, very groovy, very flowy. Captures the zeigeist pretty well, and Snoop's flow is second to almost none. Very good listening experience.
More than likely the only solid snoop album
This is phenom debut
love snoop dogg
The defining album of the G-Funk sound.
The exception that proves the rule... most gangster rap is more or less unpleasant for me. Snoop clearly has some of the same influences I have, like old school material... his cover of Lodi Dodi is fantastic, and he's clearly in tune with P-Funk vibes with "What's My Name?" I appreciate that the use of profanity is realistic i.e. it's just the way he expresses himself, it's not him trying to shock anyone. It's a bit sexually graphic at times, but then again, this is an artist that made several porn videos, so it's not gratuitous in the sense that he is definitely talking about the life he's living. The skits on this record are actually good... they started the trend, I think, but his stuff is actually kind of funny, or even gets a bit into the socio-economic realities of being a black man in America. Ultimately, I think this is one of the best rap albums that I've had so far on this list, and I'm more than 900 albums in, so I have to give it five stars.
The G-funk album. Snoop rules here, the production kicks ass and he’s just got that thing he does. Definitely a little corny now and VERY misogynistic in places, but it’s a product of its time as well. Super fun record and a classic in hip-hop.
22/1089 4.4873* I've listened to this album hundreds of times for one reason and one reason only. It's a masterpiece from start to finish. No doubt Snoop is an Uncle Tom sell-out (easy to say when I don't have any pending million dollar sell-out offers), full on criminal, misogynist, and violent dug abuser, but this is one instance where I'll separate the art from artist. I've been advocating for this album to be developed into a Broadway production for 30 years. Maybe start off-Broadway for proof of concept but it would make it to the Great White Way within weeks. The fact no one has produced this highlights the racist undertones that run deep in the veins of the Broadway elite. They let a Hispanic produce Hamilton but I guess having a Crip (or blood, I can't remember which snoop is) get his foot in the door is a step too far. Gapless playback format is HIGHLY recommended to get the flow of the original album, where there are no gaps between tracks. Hits...gz and hustlas, lo di dadi, shiznit
Great beats and no skips
G-Funk Era is still alive and well. As the sun rotates and my game grows bigger....
Classic
Yeah, there’s those other things people are mentioning. And it only talks about like, three things. But that’s right there's a motherfucker of an album.
Absolutely brilliant. Groovy as shit. Sexist as hell, but the groove is too strong.
A true classic, a must for all music lovers
Great album
West Coast Classic
Even if the interlude’s featuring DJ Easy Dick aren’t your thing you can’t deny the next step in funk that was the west coast hip hop sound perfected by Snoop and Dre.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Like a new strain of herb, the west drops a new smooth, yet rough and tough MC into the soundscape who appeals to all, one cool Cat, Snoop Dogg 🔥 Everyone hit that smoke in some way. An album everyone should hear in their lifetime👍
Pitchfork thinks this is only the 100th best rap album. It’s top 5.
Every song a banger. G-funk will never get old to me, fucking love that sound. Have the lyrics aged well? Probably not, but keep in mind that Snoop Dogg was 22 when this came out and honestly, me and my wife still laughed out loud to some of the funny nonsense coming out of Snoop's mouth. Easy 5 stars.
Yeah! Only had 3 albums in on the 1001 generator, all different genres, all from the '90s though! Definitely down with this one to kick off my Monday morning. Some OG DOGG Shizzle
West Coast Classic
Amazing. Groundbreaking sounds and styles.
9/10 Favorites: Gin and Juice Tha Shiznit Ain’t No Fun (If The Homies Can’t Have None)
Been listening to this for decades. Some fake gangstas spittin cliches over P-Funk samples, and I mean that in the best possible way. An absolute classic. Every song rules. Best songs: Tha Shiznit, Who Am I?, Doggy Dogg World
Iconic. Nostalgic. Enjoyed every minute of revisiting this album. I played it on repeat when it came out but haven’t listened to it in years. Perfection from start to finish.
Album is great but the lyrics are….not so much
Perfect beginning to end. Can’t believe it’s so long ago it was released.
This album never calms down, just pure 90s rap energy for almost an hour. I love all the features and backup vocalists and stuff throughout the album. I never knew Snoop had actual talent since all I've seen him in for the past 10 years is T-Mobile commercials and baking shows. Crazy what one good album can do to your career. He does make good mac and cheese, though. Anyways, excellent album. Definitely one of the best I've heard from the 90s so far.
debut, Dr. dre produced, realism in the rhymes Gin n juice Who am I Doggy dogg world
Nice cover. Good album. But it's not my music
One of my first rap albums ever.. probably one of Snoops best albums in my eyes. The whole album I can listen to front to back. My favourite song on the album would have to be, ‘who am i(what’s my name)’.
- Absolutely spectacular album - All the tracks are amazing - All the beats are amazing - Snoops vocals are great too - A stand out is Murder is the case
Que dire
Timeless classic.
Terrific album start to finish.
Hip-hop classic. Every single song is a banger. Snoop has one of the chillest voices and his flow is so fluid. As far as beats go, Dre is always at the top of his game, G-funk at its best. 5/5
Forever a classic

Classic
My second favourite dog related album behind Houmous & Chutneys ‘Bitchez n’ Bones’ - an anti crufts protest album! 4.6 11/12 Gz and Hustlas
There is a bit of a tragedy at the heart of this album, which can be summed up with the modern version of Snoop Dogg. Gone is the braggadocious kid from his early work, and here now is an exaggerated self-parody who will do any demeaning work for a buck. Cartoon cameos, Martha Stewart shows, silly tie-in products, selling out to perform for President Trump at the White House - Snoop will do anything but make good music these days. Seeing the artist today makes it all the more difficult to listen to this first record of his, especially since it is such a classic of the G-Funk era. This album is among the finest rap records of all time, stemming from the historic pairing of Dre and Snoop. A lot of these early 90s rap records feel dated (at least in flow, if nothing else), but very little about this one feels that way. While Dre's production is very niche and very of the time, it still feels very fresh and sounds really good. There's nothing about the sound, mixing, or even the beats themselves that couldn't be released today as-is, and that's incredibly impressive. On top of that, Snoop's central vocal performance is note-perfect. Swaggered, drawled, and oozing with charisma, Snoop raps through the beats with precision and energy, allowing himself to drag and speed up exactly where needed. This is a rapper dripping with intensity and drive, leading to an excellent flow in almost every song. Tack on some great features from Warren G, Coolio, and a handful of others I didn't quite catch, and you have a really nice-sounding record. I have this rated (in my head) as basically a 4.75, if only because a few songs are so hedonistic and "gangsta" that they wrap around to sounding a little silly. There is a kind of immaturity to some of the lyrical content here that feels a bit weird today; future versions of this genre figured out how to cover the same topics without feeling quite as...13 years old lyrically. Still, there's a lot to love in the lyrics, including an impressive level of storytelling skills to be found in the best songs on this album. Snoop feels every bit at the forefront of the genre here, and it's so nice to see. All in all, this is an amazing rap record. Anybody who likes the genre owes it to themselves to revisit this one, especially in light of everything rap has become since the record's initial release.
Smooth as peanut butter
“Hats off, gentle n*ggaz and b*tches — a rap genius! Fo shizzle.” Robert Schumann — critic for The Rap Times circa 1993.
This is a really great Hip-Hop album. I've probably heard a couple of these song 1000 times but others on this album I have never heard and they are all really good. 5 stars.
Strong album both musically and lyrically the whole way through. The number of dick jokes throughout the entire album did make me wonder if Blink182 were involved in the making of it though...
Happy Friday! Love getting hip hop mixed in here every once in a while. Classic g funk. I've never heard this album in full before today but recognize so many songs. The run from Gin and Juice through Who Am I? Is incredible. But honestly the whole album is bangers.
This is not really my style, but I recognize the brilliance. Just adore that moog bass line on What's My Name? So good.
Überraschend gut! Für viele wahrscheinlich kein neues Album, aber ich habe nie so viel Rap gehört! Besonders gut fand ich, das es Lieder waren die ich gar nicht von ihm kannte und das Cover ist ziemlich nice! 10/10 ⭐️
This record helped changed my view of rap and brought the gangsta rap style even more into to the mainstream. It felt so rebellious to listen to when I was young, and in registering to it, you can’t argue with Snoop’s rapping style, cool cadence, and just overall awesomeness. This is a great album that solidified my unchanged view that the early 90s was the best time for this genre in its history.
10/10
F**k yeah!
Álbum legendario del rap y el G-Funk, beats hermosos.
Love it, the skits, the grooves. Dr. Dre baby!
Classic. I wish Snoop kept caring instead phoning it in basically for the rest of his career after this one.
Great album! Gfunk at its finest
This album is the epitome of the 90’s rap and just general music feel. Every song got me bopping. Somehow every song is so cool but also so chill, no song is an outlier in terms of the style, it all feels cohesive. Definitely one I’ll be coming back to.
好听,听起来很适合跳舞
Classic. Consistent from song to song. Nostalgia plays a factor.
9/10
Great album to kick off the journey! Always been a Snoop fan, but I only heard a few tracks off this album. Also, this album is thirsty!
9/10 Wow, this held up way better than I expected. Brilliant. A lot of credit goes to outstanding production, pure west coast. Best: Gz and Hustlas
Will be in my rotation
I was such a snooty little NME-reading alt rock/indie kid that I actually disliked this stone cold classic at the time, to my eternal shame. Listening to this and The Chronic back-to-back does make me wonder just how much George Clinton made off of Dr. Dre's producing over the years, though.
Great album! Classic
Doesn't get much better
I ‘be always felt conflicted by this album. I’ll say from the start that I LOVE IT and always have. But there was a time when I felt like had to listen to it in secret, especially when I had eschewed all music that used samples in my purist period in the 90s. But this album was always there in the background with its lush production and funk. I can’t help but sing along to every song when I’m rolling down the street (but not smoking indo or sipping anything). So so great and my favourite west coast hip hop album of all time.
5/5
'That's the American dream nigga / Well ain't it?' It's no small thing that on this naught-to-the-hoes record the first verse we hear is from The Lady of Rage, but you'd have to be ear-plugged not to be disturbed by the sexism flaunted here. Thang is, that's the point. Commended for its depiction of 'reality,' Doggystyle is real to the extent that it's fantasy, a paradoxically sobering dosage of a gin-soaked, chronic-fogged gangsta party: 'Stay full of that gin and juice and have a ball'; 'Some of you don't know about the G thang baby / It's the smooth gangsta shit that be drivin' ya crazy.' Leave the horrors of the dark side to Ice-T and KRS-One. This is the horror of the American Dream manifest. And it happens to be fearfully well-produced.
A seminal hip hop album, and in my opinion, Snoop’s best work. This album was a statement, Snoop came out swinging and proved that he was more than just Dr. Dre’s protege, he was one of the best to do it. His rhyme schemes on this album are intricate, and he does it in such a laid back way you don’t even realize it. Snoop proved he was a one of a kind rapper on this album that still sounds great over 30 years later.
I know it's nostalgia, but I just enjoy Snoop's skills. Great album.
Very groovy album, there is a reason why this is an all time classic
I didn't realize how influential this album was to Rap production like everywhere. This shit rocks. Fav Track: Pump Pump
It is a pretty good one.
really great rap album. snoop's flow is iconic and here there are no misses. just great track after great track. the production on here is pretty great too, employing that classic g-funk sound. i really thoroughly enjoyed my time with this one!
I love this album. I’ve heard it many times before. Snoop is one of my favourite rap artists.
Classic album with multiple bangers.
An og classic in every way.
#Rally Review - Day 1## Currently on my way to Perth, so listening to these with my co-driver Jamie. He will be also writing detailed and vivid reviews. I genuinely listen to this album at least once a month. This is a top 3 hip hop album of all time and there's no arguments you could ever put forward that I would ever accept. This record would be nothing without the sheer talent onboard this record. Dre's production really was such a game changer to music production as a whole. Every guest rapper was perfect, and G Funk intro really classifies that. Maybe one of the best rap intros ever - which leads right into Gin & Juice, a household name. One of my favourite albums of all time, and one of the most important records for the hip-hop/rap genre. Highlight favourite has gotta be Ain't No Fun - I can recite every word to that song off the top of my head. One of my favourite songs ever due to the fact I am a fragrant misogynist. Jamie: "Yea mate she was pretty gud blast from the past makes me want some kush ay" 5000000/5
Spawned a music style and a drink — maybe even a lifestyle.
Before Snoop Dogg was the acceptable, affable, all too accessible face of easy shills and unexpected collaborations/friendships, Snoop Doggy Dogg was a menace to society; a gangsta with a rap sheet so voluminous that it was a wonder why and how he wasn't locked away sooner. Well, with Doggystyle, it is not hard to hear and see why. His effortless charm and swagger and chill approach to the Dr. Dre beats help anchor an album that would have been rendered unwieldy in other hands. Dr. Dre's contributions to Doggystyle lends to the credence that this album is the continuation of The Chronic and that perception does not hurt the album at all. That kind of one-two punch is the kind that produces a long shadow over the West Coast and the whole of the hip-hop genre. Snoop has had a lengthy career, but Doggystyle will always be his defining work.
I have listened to this album many times since my youth. Classic.
One of my favorite albums and my all time favorite rap album.
The original dogfather. Still is iconic to these days regardless of his crypto and money making schemes.
Talk about influence. Snoop Dogg has permeated pretty much every aspect of culture. Just this album alone, can you count how many times a verse (yes, a VERSE) is recognized as a chorus for another rapper's song? I lost count 5 songs in. Iconic, all time great album
Snoop is one of the best. Loved the flow on this album
A certified old school classic.
Love it. Just bought it by coincidence. Snoop is so smooth…
I love that the same people that protested rap like this the hardest are the same people going “oh isn’t Snoop and Martha Stewart’s relationship so cute” thirty years later while they chuckle at marijuana innuendos. But to be fair, these lyrics and skits are pretty explicit for the early 90s. Definitely can’t say the style of rap has aged gracefully, but there is some staying power with more than a few of the tracks. Either way, this album makes it easy to see why Snoop is still a cultural icon. I didn’t expect to enjoy this album so much, but I was vibing from beginning to end. I could entertain arguments for a lower score, but I think this is a five star album.
10/10
Repeat listen
In the formative years of a young kid's prepubescence, there are a few albums that stand out and rock their perception of the world. Snoop Dogg's "Doggystyle" was earthshattering for me and I love it to this day. Steven Censulo lent me this tape in 5th grade and I hid it like a bad report card from openmindz. They found it though and sat me down for a nice listen together. They cracked up the whole time and tried to explain to an 11 year old that the world is not this way. Dr. Dre's production is unmatched with the W-Ballz station play, west coast beats, and fun skits. The tracks range from typical partying and hoes on "Ain't No Fun" (best) and "Gin and Juice" to the more serious gang shootings with "Murder Was the Case." Even the cover of Slick Rick's "Lodi Dodi" is better than the original. Snoop's swag and lyrical cleverness peak here and no other rapper has been able to capture the same tone. "Doggystyle" holds the listener engaged from start to finish. Certainly one of my top album's of all time. Belongs on the 1001 list, belongs in the hall of fame, belongs in anyone's album collection...4.6 stars biatch!
What’s his mothafuckin’ name?!?!?! A Westcoast, G funk, gangsta classic. I've heard it way too many times, but when it came out in Grade 6 it was hard as FUCK.
All the while we do it Doggystyle.
As far as I can tell there’s literally only two albums on earth that sound the way The Chronic and Doggystyle do, and Doggystyle might be more consistent song to song. Classic shit.
ohhhhhhhhhhhhh shit no y'all didn't! this album is the tits i just listened to it a few weeks ago again, i am always down for this album, always! there are only like 2 songs on the whole thing that dont entirely hit. the the the DOG.
Likely, after Thriller, the most significant album of my lifetime. Everyone who was anyone had it, and if you didn’t, you were just anti hip hop and not cool, period. It still bumps, and it’s still funny.
It’s a classic.
Wanted to come up with a pun based on a lyric off of this album but I can’t make anything mor memorable than Mr. D-O-double-G can. Fo’ shizz
The apex of G-Funk. Revisiting this one was an experience of saying, 'oh yeah, this song rules!', 6-7 times. The five track run from the intro through to Murder Was The Case is about as good as any hip hop album has ever done. Also, nice to see mainstream hip hop getting some shine on this list. So far, i've gotten nothing but alternative silly hop like Octagon and the Pharcyde, or even worse, political hip hop which somehow manages to disgrace hip hop and politics at the same time. More of this in future iterations of this list, I hope.
One of my top 10 albums
Doggystyle stands as a landmark in West Coast hip-hop and a defining moment in Snoop Dogg's career. Released in 1993, the album brings Dr. Dre’s G-Funk production to life, with its lush synths, funky samples, and laid-back grooves perfectly complementing Snoop’s smooth flow and confidence beyond his years. Tracks like “Gin and Juice” and “Who Am I? (What’s My Name?)” became iconic, while cuts like “Murder Was the Case” revealed Snoop’s storytelling depth. Controversial for its explicit content, the album captured the raw spirit of 90s hip-hop, making waves and challenging social norms. Decades later, Doggystyle remains the pinnacle of Snoop’s career, shaping the sound of hip-hop and influencing an entire generation of artists making it a West Coast classic. And as far as I’m concerned, it still sounds as fresh as ever.
woof
5/5 Certified hood classic
Flawless. It set the scene for years. It still stands up now. WARNING: If you listen to this via SnoopDoggTV on youtube you will want to blow your brains out. Adverts half-way through tracks - fuck yourself with that, you cunts! Fortunately, I have the original vinyl album and I have listened to that 100's of times since release, so I just switched to that.
This album is the definition of Snoop Dogg style.
Unstoppable banger. It sounds as fresh today. Sure, it owes pretty much everything to George Clinton, but I suspect George Clinton owes more back to this album for how its made his thing eternal.
I would be absolutely horrified if my daughter was in 5th grade, knowing all of the lyrics to this album. Singing it at the lunch table in the cafeteria with her friends. But we were, and it was so fun.
Another album I own a physical copy of. Man, this thing is just great. That cover art is iconic, but I feel like it’s somehow even more alluring with one of those parental advisory labels slapped on it (eat shit Tipper Gore, you uptight bitch. Your scheme didn’t work). Not a bad song on it. Pop this bad boy on, find me some shitty seed filled brick weed, a six pack of Red Dog or some Mickey’s hand grenades, and I’m transported back to the 90’s. Easily 5⭐️
I can't believe ■ this album came out 32 years ago ■ how vulgar/raunchy it is ■ that I was bumping this nonstop in 5th grade ■ that I still know the vast majority of the lyrics Classic rap album for sure. Being 32 years old, it still holds up. The beats don't sound outdated (G Funk is timeless) and the lyrics, although misogynistic here and there, seem like they'd fit in today's rap game. 🎶 everybody's got to hear the shit, on WBALLZ WBALLZ WBALLZ 🎶
so good. so iconic
Personally this album brings back a lot of memories, and is partially responsible for failing gcse science. When we should have been learning about atoms everybody was writing down and reciting these lyrics. I can still see the teacher teaching to his best ability with my mate whispering these lyrics. At the time it was omnipresent (at least in my sphere) and seemed to be one of those all encomposing teenage cultral movements that lasted all of 5 minutes. At the time I was to preoccupied to pay much attention. On a fresh listen, love the funky samples and beats and snoops flow is engaging and entertaining, it is brash and a little mysogenstic in a benny hill way but there us humour and pathos here.
Honestly way better than I remembered. Was a bit before my time when it came out. Snoop has become such a pop culture icon it's easy to forget his roots, bangin tracks, dope Dre-infused beats. The message and the lyrics don't speak to me like they did in my teens, however it's a time capsule early 90s hip hop culture.
All time great first rap album. The interlude skits are dated, but the songs are immortal.
I don't even have to look at the reviews to know people are trotting out the same old complaints about the amount of sexual and violent content here, and frankly it's not my absolute favorite subject matter either, but if you're gonna use that to wholesale dismiss the amazing production and flow on display here then you really need to lighten up. plus it's funny how fixated he is on balls specifically
one of the greatest albums ever
Actually haven't listened to the full album, I can see why it's a rap classic. West Coast vibes for sure
Excellent.
Inventive, funny, fun. Exactly why I love snoop dogg
OG
When I was younger, I always leaned toward The Chronic, but revisiting Doggystyle has made me appreciate its flawless flow. Snoop’s smooth delivery, combined with Dr. Dre’s impeccable production, makes this a 5-star album. Every track hits, and it’s a classic from start to finish.
Classic
Name a better duo than Dr. Dre & that keyboard. Everything in this album seems to be in its perfect place. From the vocals, to the drums, to the skits. G-Funk is one of my favorite eras of hip-hop and nothing else will ever sound this good. One of the greatest albums in hip-hop history, loved this listen!
Fuck it...
Classic!! Need to listen to it more.
Madison bought this tape for me at El Corte Ingles in Madrid because I was too wimpy to buy a tape with a big Parental Advisory sticker on it. It still bangs.
The music of the album makes it a masterpiece. The skits, not so much.
No
classic
Classic.
This album still holds up after all these years. I have vivid memories of the first time I really heard this album in a smoked out 85 Monte Carlo with a massive speaker system. I had listened to the album before that but that was the first time I felt that album. This was 1994 and my perspective of music had experienced a massive shift thanks to Snoop, Dre, that tricked out Monte Carlo… and a fat joint that had been passed around. The bass was beautifully dialed in while the music was both menacing and laid back all while Snoop and company schooled us suburban kids from the south about life in the L.B.C. I can still listen to this album from top to bottom, no skips, skits and all after all these years and countless listens. Easy 5 for me.
This one takes me back. Great album, start to finish. Dre kills it with the production. The skits, the cameos, the music, all genius. Snoop jumps onto the scene and really seals his legacy from the get-go with this one. I listened to this so many times in my early teens. It's an easy 5 from me. Lodi Dodi is a favorite.
Solid album in every aspect, even down to the iconic cover art. So specific to its time and place, yet timeless. A perfect manifesto and introduction from Snoop and Dr. Dre.
this is lit, ngl.. one of the greatest
One of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. A fresh Snoop Dogg slaps with hilarious rhymes, catchy beats, and the most complete skits in the genre. Favorite Song: "Gin And Juice"
A classic rap album and game changer. Well worth the listen
This album stopped the rap world in ot tracks. After listening to aggressive gangsta rap like ice-t, Cypress Hill and 2pac plus dre came put with the chronic a more laid back gansta rap with less attitude and aggresiveness and had included Dogg to it and all the songs he was featured made the charts. This was even better cause it was a look at the life of a gangsta rap not only in the gang world but in his daily routine. Showed us nother side of the gang world and how they function around their lifestyle. It helped humanize thug life and their culture. It brought light to other stuff they were into. Later came bones thugs and harmony and others but this changed the gangsta world and how it was seen through music. Its a autobigraphical masterpiece that will always be relevant to the rap genere
Prime Snoop Dogg and prime Dr. Dre. This album might not be in my top 10, but it’s definitely in my top 20.
Dope
Tik tok and you don't stop. The world is in love with Snoop Dogg and his time has come.
You in the back with those French braids. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Top
Великолепный альбом, особенно для дебюта. Ни капли не устарел, на мой взгляд
A hip-hop classic and one of the best debuts from a rapper ever. He just sounds so at ease and relaxed on this, like he had been doing this for years. Snoops output after this is spotty at best, but this remains an absolute classic
Ok this is top tier G-Funk, West Coast hip hop.
OH man! I remember seeing this album cover in Montana. Can't remember who had it but yeah this takes me back. Well the picture anyways. Never heard the whole album but definitely at least one or two tracks. Man this has been good!! This is getting 5 stars.
Reminds me of music from pingu
This is just toooo good. It felt a little too much sometimes with the skits but this is easily one of the absolute best west coast hiphop albums of all time. The chronic but maybe even a little better.
BANGERRRRR SNOOP TO THE D O GG
Gangsta rap at its finest. It’s kinda hard to believe this guys not dead from aids, drugs or guns. At some point, he figured out how to stay relatively clean and wear the dirt too. Probably a good, very forgiving women. Now the guy is so mainstream, it’s laughable. I wonder if Martha Stewart or the network heads ever bothered to listen to these over-the-top misogynistic lyrics? Maybe someone will sing Gin and Juice or For All My Niggaz and Bitches song on the Voice? That, I’d watch!
Classic rap album and the only SD album that I know. All the George Clinton, Parliament, Curtis Mayfield etc samples are great.
Snoop is the best and if you disagree then you just can't handle the dog! Also this album is officially Martha Stewart approved.
12 years old when it came out. Unforgettable record and still one of hip hop's best.
Really felt like sitting a room smoking. Very comfy with a hint of being Hard from LBC
Classic! Fun skits, fat beats and sick flow. Dope! Favorite tracks of his whole catalog is on there as well: Gz and Hustlas.
One of the best hiphop albums
A great example of early hip hop that's aged well – it's fun, it's got a ton of bounce, and man Snoop is charismatic. The g-funk and synth is so iconic. Even the intro is good. Tried to listen to this while doing work and was having too much fun to focus. I'm all about this.
2006
classic. I think not being able to listen to this as a kid and going to a friend house to hear it make this album that much better.
Funky shit, certified hood classic. Bend over for me Snoop 😩
Classic. This is one of the first rap albums that I purchased in the early 90s. Along with Dr Dre’s The Chronic, this album defined 90s rap. I am not a big hip hop/rap fan but if it sounds like this, I can dig it. Something. About all those P-Funk samples, mixed with booming bass and Snoops smooth lyrical delivery just works for me.
The thing that sets this apart from other rapalbums is that this is fun. A true classic!
One of the GOATs
Never listened to this before, but I'm completely floored by it. So fun to listen to - every track is great and the skits are actually funny.
G-funk classic. Goood stuff.
Gin and Juice and Who Am I (heart)
Kæmpe klassiker! Har altid kunne lide det her album. Klart mit yndlings fra snoop. Føler ikke at det kan få under 4/5. Vil klart give det 4.5/5 :)) men da jeg giver 5 så sjældent, så runder jeg op hehe
I can tell why it's a classic. Every song is a banger and it's a piece of the modern rap backbone, let alone one of the best of its era. I always thought the album would have only a few good songs, but after listening, they all hit. Very enjoyable.
God damn. This is so fun and knows exactly how silly and over the top it is. 90s rap sounds much better on the west coast? Snoop dogg just knows how to make catchy rhymes and hooks with funny ass lines.
Typically I find full albums of G-Funk to be very samey regarding the diversity of production across the tracks, but Doggystyle bucks this trend by constantly offering up creative takes on classic beats and synths. Snoop's (obviously) iconic voice sounds different here, so hungry and youthful! I do struggle a bit with the level of vulgarity in the lyrics and the overall debate over the glorification/representation of violence and the gangsta lifestyle, but at the end of the day I always defer to the artist's commentary on these types of controversies, and for me, Snoop's said the right things over the years. Listened to: at home. Favorite tracks: Gin and Juice, Lodi Dodi, Gz and Hustlas
Probably my favorite rap album of all time
4.5
Probably my most listened to album of all time. That or The Sign
Iconic
The most charismatic rapper of all time paired with peak Dr Dre.
Wasn't looking forward to this particularly, but yeah fair enough when it starts doing it's thing it's pretty irresistible. The beats are funky as hell, the flow smooth as butter. You obviously have to suspend your sensible self at the door, because lyrically and conceptually, this is a cartoon. I mean, the cover is appropriate in that sense. I did that, and so I enjoyed it, and let all the absolute nonsense slide on by. Ah. Except Ain't No Fun. Yeah, another apt title. Fair enough. Feel like I need a wash even listening to that once. I love the juxtaposition this thing throws at you sometimes. Joni Mitchell yesterday, Snoop today. Went straight to George Clinton's Atomic Dog after this, and a fair bit of Parliamunkadelic.
There's not a real miss on the album, the worst it gets is "OK" for a couple songs, but the rest is snoop and the supporting cast at their best. I really love the g funk and 90s gangster rap vibes. It's a one of a kind album that only snoop could have released.
Gin and juice Tha shiznit Murder was the case Who am I? Pump pump
abi i wanna be a motherfucking hustler woof woof
Overall, I really don’t care much for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, but how can anyone say this isn’t a classic album?! From Dre’s production to Snoop Dogg’s relaxed vocal delivery, this is a smooth, laid-back album. When it comes to the production, I really like how Dre used heavy synthesizers that give the album a more melodic element. The production makes this album sound much fuller and more colorful compared to most hip-hop during this time period. Between Dre’s production and Snoop Dogg’s vocals, they were definitely the perfect combination to make this album what it is. Obviously, you can tell my favorite element was the production, considering I’ve mentioned Dr. Dre’s name more than Snoop’s. Lol! But putting my personal preferences aside, they both equally brought 50/50 to the table, creating the perfect composition for this album.
He did his own thing in an instantly recognizable and an unduplicated way.
Classic! One of the best rap debut albums ever 5/5
The G.O.A.T
Dhdbdbd
One of the greatest hip hop albums of all time and one of the greatest albums from the 90's in my opinion. Very popular in my youth and very influential. I remember when it released (I was 16) and people were playing it all over high school, it was extremely popular. Pretty much every song on the album is perfect. I've heard it a million times and I hope to hear it a million more.
5 Stars!!! Amazing album.
I like it for arrangement.
Day 16 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. This album is a perfection in gangsta rap and lyricism. Snoop Dogg knows how to effortlessly tell stories while also just making great tracks. The album is great on so many levels and there isn’t a single track where Snoop’s lyrics lack it’s always on point. There is a reason why this is an essential hip hop record.
THE g funk album. snoop is an amazing lyricist and storyteller. The bass is killer. crazy reference to biggie in lodi dodi followed by the sugar hill gang reference. super groovy and rhythmic album
Arguably in the discussion, the top 5 rap albums of all time? One of the coolest mf's on the planet. Listen to the Gourds version of Gin & Juice and thank me later.
Snoop influenced the lexicon of a generation with this album. Dont take the lyrics too seriously, have some fun with it. G Funk era!
Dre and Snoop at their best.
Classic 90's Rap by the great Snoop.
What's my name? Lodi Dodi
Probably the coolest sounding rap record of all time
Classic album love it 🔥🔥
Certified G-Funk classic alongside the Chronic. Dre and Snoop in their element, at the peak of their creative powers. There's not some impressive message or depth in the lyrics, but Snoop never pretends that there is. Also, I find it absolutely hilarious how often Snoop refers to himself in third person or spells out his own name.
