Reviews (page 9 of 12)

For a song with lyrics I didn’t understand I vibed fs but I still prefer music I know the words to lol

Fun sounding music. Wish I knew what he was saying. 2.7/5

Taj Mahal är en vibe! Annars lite ojämn skiva tycker jag, men överlag bra. En stark 3 av fem.

Not my style

S/o to the diaspora

I hear afrobeat, funk and what I assume is Brazilian stuff, outside of that I'm clueless. At points I hear what I hear on some Santana records, I do acnowledge they're from the same continent, which doesn't mean much on this context. But I still claim to hear some of that here (oh, apparently the records I was thinking of came out much earlier). It's groovy and moves me like the tide, I like that a lot.

Canción destacada: Cavaleiro Do Cavalo Imaculado

This album was funky. It made me want to go to my local Brazilian food store for some Passatempo cookies and a cup of coffee from the nearby Dunkin’s.

First listen. Ok.

Lovely sounds, close to 4. Portuguese is always so pretty, samba vibes even better.

It's international.music. like I get it, but not for me.

I vibe with it

only real trismegistusheads get this one. at one point during taj mahal i wasn't sure if the squeaks were coming from the song or the dishes i was doing

This fella released 13 albums before this and this was the first one he used electric guitar on. Influential in it's genre but I didn't have any particular tracks leap out at me as the 'wow this is why THIS was the hit" moment.

Music that would play in the background of party with the most annoying people you have met, the worst tapas you have ever tasted, the shittest alcohol you have ever drank in the simultaneously lamest and most expensive apartment you have ever set foot in. I imagine the music critics/ghouls who wrote this book often attend parties like this. Regardless, this was a fun samba album with some funky overt African influences. Enjoyed side B more than Side A but in the end, there are better samba albums that stuck with me a lot more than this one. Highlights: O Plebeu, A História de Jorge, África Brasil (Zumbi)

This album was a lot of Afro-Brazilian fun.

that was fun! i LOVED the first song and the next couple were also pretty groovy but i started to get really irritated by that birdcall (?!) sound that’s in the background so i can’t really say it’s a mega favorite or anything. fav tracks: ponta de lança africano

Not bad.

Really good stuff. I liked the vibe a lot. It’d be great summertime music, but backgroundy for me.

As with the other "world music" albums on this list I can't help but feel I would vibe better with the album if I could understand the lyrics. Still though, this one wasn't half bad.

I don’t really have much to say here other than that I love just how much is constantly going on, instrumentally speaking. Whereas The Verve album a few days ago felt like a relentless maelstrom of sound that you just wanted a break from, this album fills your ears with so many fun textures and sounds. All the syncopated percussion going on at once. And just when you think you’ve started to nail down it’s happy formula, the record hits you with something like the 1:45 mark in “A Historia De Jorge” when that starry synth sweeps in out of nowhere. Super cool, super infectious stuff. Hard not to get caught in the good vibes here. My personal favorite is “Cavaleiro Do Cavalo Imaculado” for its tempo and energy

I'm excited for this one! Opening track is great, the guitar and bass is quite funky and I appreciate the choir they've got in this one too. Being a sucker for horns, the second song also was pretty good. I wish I could understand what they're saying! In a way, some of this music reminds me of calypso? "O Filosofo" features like a little creaking sound that's real annoying. "O Plebeu" I think is probably a love song, I hear him calling someone a princess. Or maybe it's a song about how he hates princesses...idk. I think so far this is the highlight of the album for me. "Taj Mahal" might not get added to my workout playlist. Overall, I enjoyed it but probably won't do a relisten.

It was ok. Not my favorite.

A nice collection of high-energy latin beats. Songs were catchy and varied in sound/tone. Overall'I enjoyed it. 3.5/5

I enjoyed the overall sound. I did find myself bored with this half way through though. I wont be surprised if I forgot this album existed by the end of the week. It failed to leave any sort of impression on me.

Interesting album here. Many of the background noises make it very "tribal" feeling. Some fun parts, not sure I'll listen again though tbh. This is the kind of album that belongs on this list. I'd rather listen to this than some random generic indie pop album from a one-hit-wonder band.

I think if any album is going to manage to get me into Latin music, it will probably be this one. It had a lot of really fun, interesting, and groovy moments. I still think some parts were a bit too long and felt quite pointless, but I can definitely see this one and the genre as a whole growing on me.

nice fun sound, love portuguese, fun to listen to

The squeaking noises ruined my experience. Why is it in every song?! I honestly enjoyed a lot of the songs but that noise was beyond distracting. The album would have been so much better without this

I enjoyed this. I liked the rhythms, I love the Brazilian Portuguese. It's altogether a very pleasant album - but it wasn't very exciting.

A ground breaking album in the mid 70’s. People today are more familiar with different styles of music from around the world but back on its release this must’ve been mind blowing

I like this sound. Reminiscent of Pat Metheny, but with more use of horns and thicker textures. There's decent tonal variation between the tracks, allowing for Jorge Ben (and his band) to present a variety of jazz motifs and atmospheres from the time. Normally I'd give an album with consistent good vibes and variation throughout the album at least 4 stars, but there are a few distractors. There's some recurring instrument that I'm pretty sure is woodwind, but it irrevocably sounds like somebody wiping glass with a sponge. Each two-note woo-woo sounds like your local Ralph scrubbing down the school's windows. It's very prominent in Taj Mahal and O Filósofo, but it appears in nearly all the tracks – and once you notice it, it's difficult to pay attention to much else. Great singing and other instrumentation – so was it really worth sabotaging the entire sound for a two-note flute that sounds off-pitch in most tracks? One of the worst albums covers so far! The blur makes Jorge Ben's eyes look slightly demonic, and the text font/layout is about as bog-standard as it can get. Very goofy. 3/5 Key tracks: Ponta De Lança Africano, Taj Mahal, África Brasil (Zumbi)

Essentially I like everything about this. The sound, production, instrumentation his voice and backing chorus - the whole vibe. But there's really only a few bangers on it. The first tune Umbabarauma that I know already is the best by far. A lot of the rest have great elements but just aren't killer grooves. Some noodle a bit. So I admire it - but it's a 3. If it was on in a bar/cafe I'd feel 'hey this is a cool place to hang out'. I wouldn't repeat play it too much at home. Now and then maybe.

Would never normally listen to this, but find it really enjoyable.

Pretty good. The mixture of Bossa nova and funk worked for the most part. I'd listen again, but this time in the summer on a beach.

No rating possible

I liked this album. Had no idea what the lyrics say but the music is funky, well put together and fast paced. That said I am not sure I would listen to it again. Great grooves, great variation and some great guitaring on this album. Favourite song: Mesus Filhos, Meu Tesouro has a great sound to it. I have no idea what it is about and I love Africa Brasil, it has a real feel good vibe. Least favourite: Nothing was horrible. the music on the album is very good. Album artwork: Good cover. its doesn’t look like a 70s cover

Not usually my kind of music but I dug this.

Fun, loud, busy...kinda like getting lost in the noise of a crowd. Before you know it your tapping your foot and nodding along to the rhythm.

Pretty good album with some funky beats

I liked just the first song

True rating 5/10. Cool hypnotic vibe, overuse of an annoying instrument on certain tracks though.

Enjoyable mambo and jazz.

If the coffee shop is playing this, you know it’s gonna be good

Fun and enjoyable!

An alright album, I did like Hermes Trismegisto escreveu.

Really fun vibe

Never heard before. Really good. Unique and energetic.

Fun listening.

Pretty good. I didn’t understand what he was singing but you don’t need to understand the lyrics to know good music

Cool to listen to something so out of my comfort zone But uh Not my genre

No idea what was going on with this album, but some of the songs had a great beat. Pleasant enough

I liked this

Uneven but I have a real soft spot for songs in Portuguese.

Fun listen, had me tapping my toe. Good music for cleaning my desk. Number one pick probably Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro.

Solid Brazilian music. I wish I knew the lyrics, or cared enough to look them up 😂

Neat for the time but nothing I would return to.

Better than I expected.

I don’t speak the language, but I vibed.

This album sounds a bit like an early Tropical record. Call it Samba Rock and early Funk, but I don't think that gets it right. This is an interesting mix of different styles and instrumentation. It feels a bit too much here and there and unfocused. Maybe I expected something quieter?

Not my typical cup of tea, but some tracks were very catchy & funky. I'm certain I heard a handful of bits that have been sampled to kingdom come over the years.

First time with this one. High energy and a fun listen. It makes you want to move. I will listen to this again. I give it a 3.5 stars.

Enjoyed this. Sounds like it would be playing in an open air bar in warm climate international city with exotic ladies dancing. 3.25

A very fun sounding album, however he really loves his sound effects.

Lively, funky, and cool. Not many negative things to say about this record. I would definitely play it again, though I find myself doubting how often I would play it. It's a mood, for sure, but it's a mood I'm seldom in. In review: I really like the record, but I don't love it.

Brazilian psych rock. Love the world music on here. Melds African and Brazilian beats. Not my music in this language either, but good vibes. The afrobeats make this more interesting. Cheerful.

Very fun, didn't understand anything so didn't know what the message was. Wouldn't listen again but was enjoyable

I mostly enjoyed this. Before listening again I would want to learn more about it so I could better appreciate it. I would find a translation of the Portuguese lyrics

Nice background 3.5*

Not much usual listen but honestly its an absolute bop

Better than I expected

Enjoyable enough. Not quite the cuica my heart but decent.

Fun album, the second half really kicking things off, but hasn't caused me to stop in my tracks. Backing vocals are cracking. Rod Stewart has obviously scarred Taj Mahal for life, the scoundrel.

Sehr cool, mal was anderes, allerdings klangen die Lieder nach ner Zeit alle gleich

Rhythmic motion and sound

There isn't a whole lot of world music on this list but what there is has been pretty great. This one is no exception. I had never heard of this artist or album before but I really enjoyed it. No clue what he's saying but that doesn't really matter. The music is great. It's got a kind of funky samba feel to it. It is pretty dated, like I can hear the 70s all over this thing. It also seems like something that would be used in the soundtrack for an old movie where they went to Brazil and needed 'something that sounds like going to a nightclub in Brazil in the 70s'. Maybe a little stereotypical but the music is good at least. 3.25/5

It's ok

It was funky and cool, but repetitive. I enjoyed

not my style

Good enough for Rod Stewart to steal

Not really into samba but was nice

This was quite a fun listen. I might go learn Portuguese.

Was ok. Enjoyed the funk

Very cool album, outside my comfort zone for sure, but I liked it. Also, Taj Mahal was the song Masayoshi Takanaka was playing in that concert vid with the surfboard guitar! Faves: Taj Mahal

It took me a minute but I ended up really enjoying it. I almost gave it a four but I’m going to stick with a three since I’m so picky.

A bit more fun

This is a super good and interesting album. I find international beats to be refreshing and different. Yet here I have now had the privilage of listening to quite a few, and while this is good, it was not quite near my favorite. Now. Mind you this is being "quite picky" as I want to, less the ability to put half stars on my ratings, to distinguish subtle differences. Something that has plagued my ratings on this site for a while now. See, most bands, even if I am not a fan, are at least average, or three star. Some bands are better and some slightly underperform, but not enough for a 4 or a 2. So I end up in these situations where I would like to give a 3 and a half here, and some 3's I would like to give 2 and a half. But that is how it goes.

Super funky. Gimme dem bongos. The beginning of the first song feels like the beginning of an early American rock classic. Feels almost like a set of folkloric songs that future music is built on, even though it isn't really at the root of anything I would typically listen to. Like you can feel the basal, nature of the music. Honestly really difficult for me to get into too much. Definitely enjoyed more while translating the lyrics as I went along. Themes related to football, powerful women (both as unattainable lovers and revered characters), Afro Brazilian pride & (modern) mythology/history, & some self-mythology. But mostly football(?). Probably misunderstood a lot of it, but oh well. Reminded me a little bit of traveling through Brazil :) Fav Tracks: Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro, Ponta de Lança Africano, África Brazil (Zambi), Personal Enjoyment: 2/5 Critical Rating: 4/5 List Appropriateness: 5/5

It's a good groove. Should it be in this list? Of course. Will I listen to it again? Eh. Probably not.

This was my first non-English record on this list and a real endurance test. Quite funky, with a consistent, high energy maintained throughout. I learned I don't enjoy the cuíca, whose prominent screech invoked a response in me similar to the reaction people have toward the St. Anger drums. It's an obviously skilled recording, and although I'm unlikely to revisit it on my own, I'd be happy to hear any track from this at like 1AM at my third bar of the night.

Goated ending

I really liked it. Just wasn’t blown away

Pleasant enough (gets string in the center, but nothing memorable.

Kinda fun funky groovy jams.

Interesting but you need to be in the right mood for this.

lalalalala lalala lala

Very fun 70s rock infused with the Brazilian style. Really enjoyable

Neat high-energy rhythms from start to finish. A little "rickety," like a jalopy driving fast through the crowded streets of Rio in a 1970's spy movie trying to evade the villain. A new genre for me, glad to hear it. Jorge never takes his foot off the gas on this.

Cool combo of pop funk and blues sounds and instrumentation. Very catchy and easy to listen to.

It was good. I enjoyed it even though I didn't focus on it too much. I should listen to it again

Thought the vocals were a bit loud in the mix covering what sounded super interesting in the background. Got a little tiresome

Really catchy. I'm not the biggest fan of French music, but when it's good - it's good

Fun music, but don't like the singer for most of songs. Worked on a couple very well, but not on most for me. 3.5*

Cool vibes

Another fantastic record. I'm not too fond of (which doesn't mean I don´t like it, I'm not just that particularly into) Brazilian music, but some of these bossanova songs were quite nice!

Always a tentative listen when it’s a samba type album but man this was actually so catchy! Worst track was when he repeated his own name a lot but other than that, pretty good!

African drums, American funk, and Brazilian somgwriting comes together to make an album that isn’t the most consistent, but has some moments that really puts you in a trance at the arrangements, whether it’s a stripped groovy backbeat or a densely layered mix of instruments.

Good vibes but thats about it

Good melodies but a bit samey in places

Very easy listening. Great way to end the week.

I haven't heard anything by him before, and I'm completely hamstrung by not understanding Portuguese, but I can see how this became an instant classic. A fun combination of sounds, and catchy tunes. I was so intrigued by the opening track ("Umbabarauma") and the description that it was a soccer/football anthem music that I found a translation, and also listened to a great metal cover of the song by Soulfly from many years later. (The VH-1 video version isn't all that interesting, unfortunately.) Like many of the non-English albums in this collections, I find it challenging to rate this album fairly.

Enjoyed this but don't think I'd listen to it again. Didn't stand out though I was reminded of that awful Rod Stewart song on "Taj Mahal" (If you want my body, and you think I'm sexy...)

Unfortunately as I don’t speak Portuguese I can’t really comment on the lyrical content. However pretty cool guitar and world sounds without sounding cheesy - quite liked it

Another airplane listen which held its own against the noise and discomfort of modern air travel. Varied and interesting.

Very vocal forward.

This is a major vibe. A lot of fun. I don't like some of the instrumentation, but that's more a cultural difference than poor music choice. I'm having a hard time differentiating the songs from one another, so I don't really have a favorite, but they're all a good time.

This took me by surprise. The mix between cultural genres is pretty good. I had never heard of the artist before, so it is nice to be exposed to new music when it is this positive

Ponta de lança africano.

I have no clue about this kind of music, so I don't know if this is really a standout album in its genre. But I enjoyed it.

fine! enjoyable enough just not the type of stuff i listen to

Kind of a nice album to have on in the background while you work on a project. Makes me think of the music Kramer played in his apartment.

Difficult to fully rate since I don’t speak Portuguese, but I enjoyed it anyway. 2.5

Catchy but unfamiliar.

Okay, but :BoneZone:

Actually way different than o expected. Nice to broaden horizons but I’ll never listen again.

No idea what language he's speaking (maybe Portuguese?) but it's a fun vibe.

I feel like this this is setting the bar pretty high for world music - quite good

Like this.

Pretty enjoyable and a pleasant surprise

Wilde Indy Musik aus den 70ern 3/5

That was pretty good!

Enjoyed 3.5 stars

Took a couple of listens to grow on me. Thoroughly enjoyable Vibes but nothing mindblowing or incredibly hypnotizing. Opening track (Ponta de Lanca Africano) + Taj Mahal are the standouts; Xica Da Silva + Camisa 10 Da Gavea (and, to a lesser degree, Hermes Trismegisto Escreveu) are nice too.

This was not what I was expecting from the title. I was expecting this to be a bit more like a samba mix. Singers a different language I usually think of as just another instrument, but the music... I was expecting it to sound more latino. But it's not Latino, it's Brazilian / and African. They're two different styles. Having said that, let's talk about what the music WAS, not what it WASN'T. Songs like "Xica Del Silva" reminded me a little of "Jingo Va" from Santana, but in a more frenetic way. There were a lot more layers in some of these songs, which I dug. I did feel many of the songs started to sound the same, I was hoping for some of them to have at least a little bit of a different tempo and I just didn't get that feel. Maybe I need to listen to another time, I dunno. Top tracks: Title track, "Xica Del Silva"

usual music preference towards metal, classical, electronic, and rap. 2. Jorge Ben Jor - Africa Brasil: I don't speak the language and didn't lookup lyrics. Has an eclectic 70s kinda feel moving between more blues and jazzy songs with a bouncy baseline like a pre ska dancehall. I'd expect to find something from it in the samples used in an Amon Tobin or Chemical Brothers mix. 6/10 the title track is the highlight and it's interesting they arranged it last on the album.

I am loving the diversity of this journey!

Couldn't understand a word of it but it's funky as hell

This was very enjoyable. Good rhythms, decent hooks, a sunny disposition and lots of fun. It could be accused of maybe lacking depth, but that may be because I dont speak the language.

that silly funky type beat music 3/5

Interesting album - Brazilian rock funk. Very listenable Ponte De Lanca - first track, is probably the best. Cavaleiro... - good too. I'd get a bit tired of it after a while, so a 3 rather than a 4

Sounds like listening to City of God (before the… unpleasantness…) playing in the other room. Never quite hooks enough to make you sit down and watch the film, maybe because you saw it in Uni and think you remember the ending, but then BAM, they’re at the door with the pizza and you’re thinking I didn’t order pizza, what’s going on here. Then you realise it must have been an online order delivered to you in error, meaning they can’t take it back, so you basically have a free pizza. So you think maybe you’ll sit down and watch City of God after all. And do you know what? You quite enjoy it. That’s what this album is like.

Good music performed by good musicians. I'm guessing he was influenced by Fela Kuti with the call and response by a chorus of female singers. Unfortunately, I'm not into it. I think the album needs more talking drum!

Fun, Brazilian samba sounding music with a twist of funk. Inoffensive enough, but the entire album felt and sounded like one whole song though. The top review for this album dissecting some of the Portuguese lyrics was an interesting read as well.

I like it. The Afro funk is injected with an earthy feel by the Latin percussion. The horns are used minimally but add just the right amount of kick when they come in. There is some kind of prominent, rhythmic wind instrument in many songs that often sounded like a bird. At first I thought it was cool, but after a while it was all could hear. Perhaps mimicking the sounds of the Amazon? Idk, but my brain hyper focused on it. 3.5 (PS- Portuguese is a wild language)

The blurry eyes on the cover is nightmare fuel, but aside from that - and a shitload of cuica -- it's pretty good. It wasn't quite as funky or african rooted as I expected, still it's upbeat and fun. Love Brazilian music and would definitely add this to the rotation, though probably not my fav. 3.8

Very fun listen, my first foray into MPB-type music. There's a lot to appreciate here, you can definitely hear the compositional fluency of the artist, and the execution is so gratifying to listen to. That being said, it's not personally my jam quite yet, but I think future MPB will strongly benefit from this first exposure.

Actually really chill I wanna get more into soul fusion

Fun album. Lots of energy and Brazilian pride I like it a lot. Good for drives in the day Standouts: Camisa 10 De Gavea África Brasil Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro

Taj Mahal made me get up off my couch and start dancing, the rest of album is good but wish there were morr full of lively feel good bangers like this one

Oh, bastante bien.

It sounds quite good but knowing Portuguese makes it worse.

Electric guitars go a long way. Made it an ok listen for this record. Was not aware of the Rod Stewart connection / controversy…bit of a stretch methinks…Wish I hadn’t read the Wiki summary while listening to see if I would have picked up on my own. Still, Play that funky music Brazilian Garoto!

The last song is really good. I did also like finding out about the Rod Stewart plagarism. It's not my genre, did still like the listen though. Will I listen to again: 5%

Brought the funky samba into my life that I never knew I needed

Very catchy

Interesting album that I can see inspired many albums I enjoy today. I could listen to this in background and really enjoy it.

Some nice songs

This is exactly the kind of thing I signed up for. I didn't really like it that much, but in a sea of country and Brit pop, this is a welcome break.

Actually kind of enjoyed this album. The first random "world music" album on this list that I've liked. The music is pretty catchy. 6/10 (3/5)

Great background vibe. Very 70's party

Expected to not like this album, surprised me with its nice upbeat tempo.

Not interested but listened anyway. Much better than expected.

6.5/10

This was really good.

It's kind of fun to listen to something so different. It's fun and bouncy, but it does start to get a little repetitive, especially as I don't understand Portuguese.

Interesting blend of funk and island style music.

quite cool - almost reggae style

Good fun. Would have loved to have understood the lyrics.

I mean yeh, whatever. Very good if you’re in to this sort of thing, certainly accomplished. I’ve yet to hear a 70s album where the songs aren’t too long. I saw someone say it’s a good dinner party album - bang on. Great background music.

Woo a non-English language album! Really liked the blend of genres.

Short and fun

I had fun with this, there's a couple really great tracks.

New to me. The instrumentation was good but the vocals were annoying at times. I'm not mad at it, but I wont go out of my way to listen.

Pretty chill

It’s ok.

Interesting and nice. Never heard before. they did a good job of putting foreign language albums on here.

Different than I’m used to. Not that it’s bad just not for me

Very interesting. Seemed to move into and out of different genres. I thought I heard “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy,” and Rod Stewart actually did plagiarize it (“Taj Mahal”).

Solid AfroBrasilBeatRock. Enjoyed it, would listen again. There’s not much more to say.

This was pretty good. Not someone I'm familiar with, though I did recognize the opening track from the Soulfly cover of it. But there's some pretty good tracks on here, I enjoyed the playthrough quite a bit.

Fun album. It's not a genre I really know at all, but I enjoyed it. I'm gonna say 3/5 though because I know I won't be coming back to it.

I was scared to listen to this album, because the guy on the cover is spooky as shit. Turns out the music is fine except for that one toot toot instrument that annoys the fuck out of me. It's completely personal.

Quite a cornucopia of styles. Good if you like African music.

It's good for what it is. I don't listen to this type of music.

Xica Da Silva

Liked! Island music!

Harder to rate because of the language barrier. A bit reminiscent of some late 60s/early 70s stuff, but more "conventionally" structured and more "ethnic" instrumentation. Favourite Songs: "Xica Da Silva", "Africa Brasil (Zumbi)" Notes: - "Ponta De Lanca Africano" groovy spy-esque Bass Riff - "O Filosofo" interresting "wonky" soundscape with "beach feel" (somehow vibes like "Sympathy for the Devil") - phaser/flanger usually on clean guitar - "Xica Da Silva" somehow stands out a bit - "Cavaleiro Do Cavalo Imaculado" also a bit standout energy - "Africa Brasil (Zumbi)" little harsher vocals/bass, "bass synth lead" and flute accents join instrumentation

upbeat fun and bouncy

better than expected, fuck oasis

- funky

Bit lively

It was interesting. Reminded me of Dr. John's early stuff. But not what I'm looking for.

Interesting. Funky but with African sounds?

Not bad for once

pretty upbeat album, heavy disco influence, not my personal favourite era?style of Brazilian music

Something about hearing this much Portuguese just rubbed me the wrong way. Musically it was fine, I got a bit sick of the monkey drum at the end though. The cover also unsettles me, what is up with that hazy photo and the weird eyes

Taj Mahal is a bop

Great album, really enjoyed the sounds. I can see a lot of influences in this album and can see a lot of genres drawing from this album. My only complaint would be the monkey yell was used in every. Single. Song. The beats and different tempos kept it going!

Oo, that was good. Lots of energy and depth of sounds.

Very early "world music" feel.

Wanted to give this two starts but then some of the nonsense ended up actually being fun.

Nothing wrong with this but it's not my taste

Liked this on first listen! Another 💿 added thanks to this project.

Hmm this is pretty cool! I like the upbeat vibe, and how the 70s feel is still there, and noticeable. Like Brazilian Disco. lol it's interesting how such happy people can come from a country so poor and in distress.

enjoyed it

This was very different to what I normally listen to. But, it was quite good.

This was not too bad. It’s no phonk, but then nothing ever will be.

Only had the chance to listen once, seemed ok, probably deserves another listen.

While I enjoyed moving to the music, I prefer albums in a language familiar to me.

Impressive album. I really liked it. Music really is universal. Even with the language barrier I seriously enjoyed this album.

Was an alright listen. Reminded me greatly of the soundtrack to the Brazilian movie City of God. Looked up if any songs from this artist were on there and there isn't! Must just be a staple of Brazilian music, all the "hoo-hoo" noises lol. Probably won't revisit this but it made my Friday work day a little more tropical.

got me moving pre run

I liked the vibe, but but sure i'd listen to again. 3/5

I enjoyed listening to this because it was totally outside of anything I would have considered listening to.

Pretty interesting to listen to Standout songs: Hermes trismegisto escreveu Xica da silva Cavaleiro do cavalo imaculado

I enjoyed this very much, but was taken a little bit out of it because I was trying to pick out any words I knew in Portuguese.

Nice and bouncy. Latin beats with a hint of funk sprinkled in. Full bodied on the ears with a lively finish. Pairs perfectly with a spicy moqueca and a setting sun.

It was okay. Feel like it's very samplable, but it mostly just happened.

I actually quite enjoyed this

Good to listen while working on some emails.

So I thought this was not going to be good because I've been burnt a few times with albums I didnt recognise and had been on a bit of a bad streak. I couldn't even guess the genre before I started but this honestly was a vibe. Brazilian jazz funk. Now out of the gate, this album had 2 incredible songs it kind of petered for the rest of the album and it was okay. But it's got 2 or 3 4/5 songs.

I found this album to be a really fun mix of Afrobeats and Brazilian music. Very funky and cool.

very fun album, feels like walking through a market in Salvador de Bahia. this won't make it into my playlist but was quite enjoyable.

Good background music

Pretty groovy! Great album to pop on whilst cooking and having a glass of wine or as a pre going out ‘warm up’. Loved it

Oscillated between highly infectious and mildly irritating. Luckily it spent the majority in the fun and infectious. Solid 3.5

Good album for a walk. Passionate and fun. Clever blending of styles. Interested for more by Jorge. Three stars. Fave track: O Filósofo

Highlights: Ponta de Lanca Africano, Xica da Silva.

Seamless, enjoyable and exotic listen. Will be revisiting.

This album has great energy to it. Despite not speaking Spanish, I enjoyed the feel of the album. Would happily put this on again.

Literally know nothing about this album, artist, or any songs. No idea what is going to sound like, but I'm guessing it fits into the nebulous 'world music' genre. Ok, guitar riff is great, very cool groove. Lyrics are not in English, but the singing is good. I'm guessing Portuguese? Very fun and bright. Lots of sounds I'm not familiar with. Doesn't sit in any one genre, just kinda goes where it wants to. O Plebeau is really fun, then Taj Mahal is fun in a very different (but still upbeat and fun!) way A lot of the sounds in the background remind me of gyroids from Animal Crossing. Which is the best example of my unfamiliarity with music in this vein. This was definitely an "Expanding my musical horizons" album, and I kinda loved it. I don't know much about samba and should really go back and listen to some of his earlier stuff, but throwing it in with funk is very cool. I could see myself coming back to it and diving in deeper.

First and second listen. Not bad…good.

Favorites: Ponta De Lanca Africano (great beat), O Plebeu (wish I could understand portugese), Xica Da Silva, Africa Brazil (Zumbi). Some of the tracks are heavy on the Cuica (monkey drum) - something I'm just not used to (like in Taj Mahal). However this works well in Xica Da Silva.

Taj mahal is a banger

very enjoyable despite the language barrier

I think this Brazilian bossa nova/funk style just isn't for me. I can respect it though. There's some fun funky guitar and rhythm here. I could see it being a fun background for a party.

I feel that I cannot give this a fair review, as this kind of World Music is too far from my musical roots. It sounds like a blend of said genre with 70s funk, another of my less-than-favourite styles. 2.5/5

Cool album! I loved the unique experiance of needing to feel the meaning in the music without lyrics. Really a good album. Notices some of the vocal melodies matching the melodies of popular songs and which was fun. May listen agian. Probably 3/5 in my book.

Although I couldn't understand the lyrics this was pretty good.

This was fun, although I couldn't understand the lyrics I could feel it

Not really my style but worth a listen.

Kind meh

This album was definitely better than I expected it to be. It was fun and upbeat. For once a foreign album that I have no clue what is being said but still provides entertainment. That is what music is about. Not sure how good the lyrics are but they’re catchy and this album was pretty fun. I would listen to this again. Perfect album for a specific setting or party. 6.3/10

a real treat

Great beat and a great bluesy vibe. Obviously, I don't understand the lyrics, but it's good stuff.

Not bad, but not my taste. Stand-out: Xica Da Silva

3. Nothing more.

Really good jams.

I couldn't understand a word that they were singing but it didn't matter, it was an enjoyable listen and a fun discovery.

The album starts better than it ends. It's not bad, but it's too much sound. The instruments overwhelm my brain and leave me anxious as I listen. Favorite song was meus filhos, meu tessoro.

"Africa Brasil" by Jorge Ben Jor is a solid album that blends samba, bossa nova, and African rhythms. It reflects Jorge Ben Jor's musical skills and highlights Brazil's diverse cultural influences. The mix of Afro-Brazilian elements gives the album a lively feel. With catchy rhythms and Jorge Ben Jor's expressive vocals, it's a enjoyable listen. The album's upbeat and energetic mood makes it appealing for those who appreciate diverse musical influences. Overall, it's a decent musical journey that contributes to the rich diversity of global sounds.

It was interesting and strange

Evening after work chill music for me

Some of the Orchestration feels a little dated but overall its a nice mix of 1970's contemporary music and Brazilian music. best when its rawer and more direct, the thicker orchestration seems to dilute it a bt.

Africa Brazil is an album. It's a good album, the sound is familiar yet has something different in it. The guitars that sounded at first drew me in, they sounded kinda like blues, but then the songs went into punchy rhythms with rock and samba elements, with frankly, very interesting production. But this is not for me, the sound is good, I liked the album, but I wouldn't listen to it again. Plus songs in languages I don't know aren't my thing. It's not that I have to know what the songs says, but it just feels weird and less enjoyable somehow, not the fault of the album, but still. Overall, I am glad I listened to this, nevertheless, I give it a 3.

aint bad

Highlights: Ponta De Lança Africano, Taj Mahal Pleasantly surprised by this album! It's fun, sensual, chill and get-up-and-go-dance music. I can picture some songs appearing on Late Night Tales compilations. Think funk, soul, light disco and bossa nova, all in Portuguese. Overall: 7/10

What a fun listen. Normally, when I listen to music, I start with vocals and lyrics. And I get my first impression on what is being said and how it is being said. On this record.... I don't understand any of the lyrics, as I don't know Portuguese. I had to adjust my listening accordingly. I listened to the vocals as it was another instrument. And by doing so, it added a lot of layers and flavour to the album. Musicly (vocals aside) it's great. Lot of soul and a lot of funk! Rhythm section is tight and I can just picture being in a sweaty bar and every one dancing and enjoying themselves to this type of music. Live music hits so much harder. I can't see myself giving a second listen to this album but I'm happy I got to experience it. It truly made me feel like I was some place else.

This has got a cool, groovy upbeat reggae type sound mixed into more African drumbeats. I really like it and would probably like it more if I could understand the words.

It was good.

Not bad just have to be in a better (sunnier) place for it to be better

Very fun Brazilian rhythms. Very dance-able, samba-ish. Very cool traditional Brazilian instruments here.

Good fun, definitely outwith my usual taste but a good listen regardless

Interesting! Unique sounding album with good charisma.
