Reviews (page 10 of 12)
Very groovy album with about four standouts, the rest blend together unfortunately
Favo's: Taj Mahal, Camisa 10 Da Gavea, Africa Brasil (Zumbi)
if u think i’m sexy
Finally, something else brand new to me. But the very first song has lyrics and melody that fellow Brazilians SOULFLY used in one of their early records, so I was immediately struck with familiarity. This album is groovy as fuck. Smooth, vibey, funky. Would have loved this back when I was sample hunting. Solid old-school Brazilian samba soul music.
Not my kinda jam but the album itself has good variety and I imagine is quite good for people that are into this kinda music. Think it would go well in some kind of hipster coffee shop where they tell you that your preferred order is wrong because you need to have it without milk for the true experience.
really nice chords and harmonies and just a nice atmosphere I can enjoy pretty much all of the time
Very bouncy. I enjoyed this one
Latin, upbeat summmery tunes.not for me to actuvly listenfk but suffs good background chill.
Not bad, kind of zoned out a bit but good background music.
Surprisingly fun listen, obviously didn’t understand the lyrics but could hear influences similar to Graceland
Never heard of this guy before and haven’t listened to hardly any Brazilian music in my life. I enjoyed this album, I think Portuguese is a really cool language. Liked the tempo and danceability of the music. Also had to look up what was making the wild squeaking sounds; turns out it’s a crazy drum-shaped instrument called a cuica that’s pretty prominent in Brazilian music. I think Beck uses one on a song called “Tropicalia.” Three stars
I knew Jorge Ben Jor before from his earlier work, I've never listened to any of these songs though. I had to let this one sit for a while - I've put it on my 1001 backlog list - because at the time it didn't quite resonate with me and I knew there had to be something more in it. Turns out there is, but I'm still not enjoying this as much as I though I would. Naturally, I love this crazy mixture of funky and latino rhythms and I find myself bouncing or tapping the table as the album is playing in the background. I love the three songs in the middle - Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro (such a beautiful love song to his children!), O Plebeu and Taj Mahal. But really, I find the rest of the album to be a bit tiring, especially towards the end. At some point, there's just too many things happening at the same time and it leaves me with this.. noise (and I'm not just saying that about cuica, but yeah it is kind of an acquired taste if you're not from the culture). I don't know, maybe it's just not my thing. I still have trouble rating it. On its own, it would be a 3, but I'm not sure if this is the only album from Jorge on this list? Hope not.
Solid guitar I liked it
Decent album, only really liked the opener, everything else was kind of background music.
Really enjoyed the Blues inspired guitar and vast amount of percussion instruments throughout the album. I do think the songs are rather repetitive but I did find my self drumming along to most songs so I like it overall. 6/10
Good music and very catchy - might go back to it later
Not for me.
Funky, upbeat, fun, albeit a little repetitive. 3.5
It was alright but naturally I could not understand a word that was being said. I won't revisit the album but I didn't skip any songs. I will round up.
Lots of wacky sounds
Of the 3 albums I've received so far, this is the one that I enjoyed the most sonically, with beats that get you bobbing your head. The driving rhythm throughout and it not being in English makes it all feel like one long song to me. I don't see this being an album that I revist much, but it was an interesting listening experience. Song going on my "1001 Songs" Playlist: Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma) The first song is what caught my ear the most, the bluesy guitar riff to open is something that I wish appeared throughout the album, but it takes a back seat to the rhythmic dominance.
Mejor de lo que esperaba.
3.8 - I like the funky guitar riffs that set the grooves, and the plethora of percussions that give a sort of earthy, organic breath as a backdrop. The female backing vocals, and the bird-like squawks and squeals add tropical color. A very danceable record. Standout: "O Plebeu"
Not my style
i like it . happy music. no idea what its about but it makes you smile.
Funky, amusing
Was kinda cool
The songs all blend together, but it’s a fun enough vibe that you really don’t mind. Nice to listen to in chunks.
Favorite Tracks: Ponta De Lanca Africano, Hermes Trismegisto Escreveu, Meus Filhos, Meu Tespouro, O Plebeu, Taj Mahal, Xica Da Silva, Africa Brasil (Zumbi)
3.5/5
Good!
The John Lennon of samba…. Is what I would say if I knew anything about samba, but it’s pretty good. But I have no idea what’s going on 6.7/10
Idk what they’re saying but it sounds good!
Banging base lines. Good fun.
Bossa nova and samba aren’t my favorite genres. I think the instrumentation, mainly the guitars and brass (I love brass!), through the album. I love Ben Jor’s voice, too! Even though I don’t know all the words of the songs, he sounds like a clever lyricist sometimes.
Very lovely sound, really well produced. The hooks didn't grab me too much, though. Would make nice mood music, but I don't see myself listening to it intently. Kinda want to listen again with headphones.
It’s got a good beat
This was fun. Not as much my style, but I could see why it was popular.
Not usually my type of music but the entire album was very listenable.
It was fine
Had no idea what to expect, but I really liked this. I really enjoyed all the songs even though I didn't know any of the words, and the music made me want to dance. Great blend of instruments and overall great album.
Highlights: "O Filsofo," "Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro," "Taj Mahal," "Xica da Silva" This album is great, but might not be one for the history books when Wonder and Gaye were blending soul and funk with bossa nova back in '71. Without getting into Brazilian music history, it was already in fashion by this release, and African genres were on the way stateside. This was contemporary with Fela Kuti's Zombie. Probably the most important context. Another critic pick seemingly just affirming popular taste and commercial taste solely off the hit opener.
Not my thing, but enjoyed the instrumentals and mixing. Has a classic vibe about it, makes you wanna cruise with the windows down.
Jorge Ben's "Africa Brasil" undeniably captures the essence of rhythm and energy that Brazilian music is celebrated for. From the first note, the album immerses listeners in a whirlwind of upbeat melodies, irresistible percussion, and the musicians distinctive vocal style. Tracks like "Ponta de Lança Africano" and "Taj Mahal" are pure sonic celebrations that transport you to the heart of Brazilian street parties. The rhythmic complexity and seamless interplay of instruments make for an engaging and memorable experience. Undeniable talent. However, where "Africa Brasil" falls short is in its lack of variety. While the album consistently delivers on its upbeat and infectious rhythmic vibe, it tends to stay within a somewhat predictable range of musical styles. This lack of diversity might leave some listeners yearning for more experimentation and exploration of different musical textures. It's a missed opportunity to truly showcase the depth and breadth of Ben's creative potential/talent. 7/10
I really enjoyed it but feel like it is background music and not something to focus on.
Very cool. Different from what I’ve heard before.
There us a repetitive groove in most songs - seems like it was made for the dance clubs, and it seems like quite nice background music for parties. The production is good, and it does not sound like an album from the 70s. There are some catchy pop tunes sprinkled in like "O Plebeu". It seems that the Taj Mahal chorus predates Rod Stewart's (Do ya think I'm sexy), and has very much the same harmonic flow. Interesting. The album sometimes gets bogged down in slightly uninspired rhythmic exercises, but then a new melody will come along to get your attention again.
Jorge Ben shows on this project that he is a decent songwriter. The instrumentation of the album is good, but the singing downgrades it a little. The album really just goes in one ear, out the other. Fav tracks: Umbabarauma, Meos Filhos, Taj Mahal Least fav: Camisa 10 da Gavea 3/5
Nice to see the occasional, if still very rare, deviation from mainstream English speaking music. And the music here isn't bad, either. At the same time, it didn't knock me off my feet.
Vibrant, funky and fun to listen to. I understand that there's some real lyrical depth here, which I unfortunately don't get to experience just due to the language barrier. But I enjoyed this quite a bit. Fave Songs: Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro; Cavaleiro do Cavalo Imaculado; Camisa 10 da Gávea; O Plebeu; Taj Mahal
Banco. 7/10
Fun stuff, very grooovy baby. Unlikely to listen to it again though
pretty cool but i don't speak portuguese. i got the gist of a couple songs I read through the lyrics on, but I was honestly too distracted throughout by all the weird noises they were making in the background. meus filhos, meu tesouro had a little yappy dog, a few of them had screeching monkeys, and taj mahal had someone pushing and pulling a plastic straw through a soda cup lid over and over. this has led me to realize that more albums should have weird, annoying sounds as the basis of their instrumentation. favorites: meus filhos, meu tesouro, taj mahal
Didn't mind this, the Brazilian funky blues was an enjoyable combo, worked well as background music. There was a heavily used instrument that sounded like a yappy dog that wasn't for me.
I generally like his vibe.
ok
Ok. Sorry, that's all i got
Never heard of this guy before but man, I liked this a lot more than I thought I would have considering it’s not in English and I couldn’t understand a single word. Very funky in a good way.
I really enjoy it when I listen to it, and I can appreciate the musicianship. That being said it's also very forgettable to me and not something I reach for.
This was quite interesting and an enjoyable listen without being earthshaking in any way. It almost gets an extra point just for not being in English, but ultimately I'm not going to listen to this again, so it's a 3. Decent stuff, but not my favourite sort of world music.
Surprisingly funky.
It's good & nice, but how many Brazilian albums are we going to continue to get? I wish this list had albums from other countries. This feels skewed.
sounds pretty much as expected, generic samba/western crossover, not bad and an inspiration to Rod Stewart and others
Most of the album is full of funky, groovy world music type songs, which is a plus. Other than that, it kinda blends together at times into just one big song, it's solid for background music for me and was enjoyable.
it was okay? angelica song!
Not a bad listen, but not something I'll ever come back too
Sexy
Interesting and fun, will definitely revisit.
Funky groovy feel to the album Introduces to a whole new world of music and collaboration
Ok
I love how they used the fuck out of that percussion instrument that sounds like a small dog barking.
It was enjoyable enough. Hard for me to rate because I don't listen to that genre a lot, but I enjoyed it, so three starts.
come to brazil. hyvää viidakko saundia.. NO SILTÄ SE KUULOSTAA... jungle drums... apinan ääni vaikutelma konsepti koko albumin ajan... pistää tanssahtelemaan tämä ääni (brasil aa a samba vai yes you are from brasil? samba time.... i love samba and such things...) en voi kritisoida lyrisismiä sillä en puhu portugalia.. ja EN MYÖSKÄÄM VOI VITU GOOGLATA TRANSLAATIOTA (KÄÄNNÖSTELMÄÄ) JA VITTU LUKEA SIITÄ:................... EN YMMÄRRÄ LYRIIKOITA:... HUOH... cavaleiro do cavalo imaculado
Interesting, like a funky version of Santana.
Very pleasant mix of tropical styles. Enjoyed it except that I can't really appreciate the singing. And why does that cuckoo pop up everywhere?
Pretty fun to listen to. Good background noise for me
Good sound overall, but nothing really grabbed me.
A great sound. It feels like several different continents worth of cultures colliding
I adore Jorge Ben (Jor). He’s a legend in samba and South American musical in general. He’s always capable of delivering catchy tunes and África Brasil is no exception. I felt drawn towards the majority of the songs and the inclusion of the electric guitar brings an extra element of funkiness to his music. I was gonna hand this a four star review, but at the end of the album I had grown so tired of the relentless use of the cuíca that I found myself giving up every time it reappeared.
Very interesting
It's a nice listen. Lots of funky, upbeat jams and cool instrumentation, and he has a nice voice to boot. It's not my usual listen, but I appreciate it.
Easy listening
I can't find every song on album but i listen as much as i can and its pretty impressive
Got a few tracks in..
Wel grappig, niet mijn ding
funky
Not my thing but quite pleasant to listen to
Quite enjoyed this - a new one on me. The opening track may be the best footy-related song after those two by The Fall. But the relentlessly sunny vibe wore off eventually on this grey and damp Monday morning. Do I think it's sexy? Maybe just a little.
This floated from start to finish. It passed me by during a wfh session. There was little pause for thought. I wasn't distracted, but I wasn't drawn in either. The Portuguese lyrics probably had something to do with it. I liked the rhythms and drum loops. It sounds as though it could have been recorded this year, and not the mid '70s. A useful listen, but not a life changer for me.
Definitely 70's funk rock! Don't usually listen to music in another language but it wasn't bad
Yeah it was okay. Instrumentals were fun, but difficult to get into overall
This was of an era, but has a pretty classic feel. I understand it was lifted from as well.
23rd February 2023 Listened while having a busy work day and dad plaster boarded the fireplace in the front room. Chilled evening fell asleep watching nobody. Blues, Afro beat, funk all mixing together in a spicy stew. 3.5 if I could.
Took me back to our honeymoon in Brazil. Enjoyable but unremarkable.
Love the instrumentation. The album seems a little ahead of it's time. Some songs do have a 70's feel to them, but the whole album seems newer than it is. The negatives: I have no idea what he's saying. I'm guessing this is in Portuguese? But it sounds French? And this just isn't my type of music. I can appreciate the talent in the album though.
Some cool jams, I love foreign musicianship and takes on famous chord progressions, especially the unique rhythms and singing style, but I felt the songwriting could have been a bit more diverse to make the songs stand out from each other a bit more.
Enjoyable standard 3 star world music album
Boy is this a strange album- made in the 70's it doesn't sound like anything i've heard before? I can't even decide if I like it or not. Brasil meets Africa I guess. It has a 70's lounge Musak vibe too.
Perfect album for doing work. Had this on and things flew by. Really enjoyed the beats and rhythms. Not sure if I’d listen outside of this but glad I did.
Pleasant enough, but not really my thing. Great guitar player!
This was fine.
sounds pretty much as expected, generic samba/western crossover, not bad and an inspiration to Rod Stewart and others
Not a lot of thoughts here, but enjoyable while it was on.
Solid samba
Rolig lyssning. Bäst: O Plebeu
3.5. Very cool and fun to listen to...
Great beats and music. Couldn't understand the lyrics due to it being Portuguese, but I would probably listen again.
Never heard this before, but some of the beats and rhythms are very identifiable in a lot of current music. Lots of samples from this album!
great instrumental felt brazilian while listening fav song taj mahal
animated and colorful vocals and beautiful backing vocals and instrumentals as well. so full of soul so groovy i feel like dancing im like in rio (bird movie) fav songs: ponta de lanca africano, meus filhos mei tesouro, cavaleiro do cavalo imaculado
There are some great vibes on this album.
So much of world music is just pure fun. Talents making music, and sharing their sound and culture with the rest of the world. Jorge Ben Jor does all that here, with zero pretenses and a huge display of love and pride for the art he's making. Even if I walk away from this album thinking that it's not exactly my cup of tea, I can find many things to appreciate and love about it - and certainly a lot of songs to dance and groove to. Standout tracks are Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro and Camisa 10 Da Gavea.
The style of Jorge Ben Jor’s “Africa Brasil” is a pretty fun mix of diverse influences. But with lyrics in a language I don’t understand, unless the vocals really lend themselves to the atmosphere created by the music then there seems to be a ceiling for my enjoyment.
spoko
i hadn’t heard of jorge ben jor and i honestly regret not having heard him before because even with the first song it was already pretty good. my favorite songs were: Ponta De Lança Africana, Meus Filhos Meu Tesouro, Xica Da Silva, and Camisa 10 Da Gávea. a good album!!
Uplifting, but also loud
Quite enjoyed to funky African/Brazilian style. Gave me good vibes
funky background muzak
Fun. Mix of funk with African rhythms.
Why not? Strange how many reviewers have a problem with it being in Portuguese. I enjoyed this, a nice change
Not really my jam
It's in a different language, which makes it hard, but the music is pretty good. Portuguese funk. I enjoyed the whole album!
Thought I'd enjoy this more. I love a bit of Brazilian afrobeat but that squeaky drum they use drives me up the frigging favela. Less rhythmic or exciting as I'd anticipated, subtle, good for doing something else to. Far from life changing but could have on again no problem
6/10
Pretty nice jams. I enjoyed the 1st track the most.
No clue what was going on but it was a vibe
it’s fine, wouldn’t really go out of my way to listen to it but good background music
I've never heard of this before, so I'm going in completely blind, and I kind of like it that way. First impression of the first minute of the first track, this is pretty dope. Puts me in mind of Los Yorks. Oh the bass in O Filosofo hits. The music is still really good several tracks in, but the lyrics are getting a bit gratingly repetitive by Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro. The progressions in Taj Mahal sound a lot like Rod Stewart to me lol Da Ya Think I'm Sexy. The music and layers just sounds really ahead of its time.
I can’t understand the lyrics, but I’m sure it’s a scribal fair. Very cruisy
A fun, bouncy album that I couldn’t begin to understand due to language barriers. But that said, it was a very uptempo album that would provide fun dancey vibes to any party and make the day a little brighter.
Mukavaa menoa, tykkään. Ei kaikkein eeppisintä brassitunnelmaa kuitenkaan.
Funkkaavaa menoa! 3/5
It's not really the kind of music I like, but it's definitely not bad and there are some parts I quite liked. In particular, I enjoyed the jazzy/bluesy guitars which are somewhat untypical for the style. The guy also has a good voice. Giving this 3.5 stars, but rounding down as it didn't really grab my attention.
Africa AND Brazil, that's a lot of beats.
After the first two tracks, I almost called this a snap four star album. The subsequent tracks dipped a bit, lowering the overall album to a high three, but they were still very good, and the album is overall still very enjoyable.
Felt like dancing
Very good and catchy apart from the train whistle being used as a beat in every song
I'm not super familiar with MPB or samba funk so probably not the best person to evaluate it. Nevertheless, even if I try to look beyond my own exposure and preferences (e.g. way too much cuíca for me...), I would say this is some decent, easy listening with a just a few tracks standing out from the rest.
Quite fun and good melodies but did get a bit boring after a while.
An enjoyable African-Reggae album. The tracks were forthright enough to keep me interested, but not so melodically demanding as to take my attention away from other things. Some of the instrumental choices (see: the prominent 'woo!' sounds on most of the tracks) grated on me a bit, but I can definitely see myself turning this on and vibing while getting some work done in the future.
Good listen. Never listened to the type of music before. Tan mahal my favorite
3.5, pretty solid funk
it just kinda went along in the background in its own flow. nothing I would write home about, but also nothing I would actively turn off.
Shucks, another horizon-broadener I wanted to like more than I actually liked. Love the energy though! And the song "Taj Mahal" made me wonder why it's so familiar - which made me find Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" - which made me find that although i can't stand him, that song is BOSS.
I really enjoyed the 2nd half of this album, probably worth 4 stars, but the first half dragged it down to 3. I've never listened to much Brazilian music so this was a fun time. The fusion of genres had me bopping along.
It has a lot of that tropical instrument that I can't name but that is often featured in comics or whatever.
Had one song I really liked. Might have a good song for Road Work.
Cool
Very American sounding instruments. Would be four stars if there was any English on it but as it is it kinda blends together for me.
Quite funky. Worth a listen
A fun album but it drags near the middle portion till the end.
I am in an elevator in a funky NYC hipster hotel. It is hot and muggy. I am annoyed. I am unsure if the music is making it better or worse.
Cool
I’ve never really listened to an album like this before. Definitely worth revisiting. I think it would take a few listens to get really into
Sehr rhythmisch und temperamentvoll
Fun, listenable Brazilian Samba? Rock? I'm not sure about the genre. Not enough hooks to draw me in though and that in combination with Lyrics I can't understand made it feel almost like jazz and a bit too abstract.
I usually get excited when you i get world music. I was surprised by the shortish 3-4 mins tracks and it didn't really grab me. There were no memorable hooks and it kinda washed over me. However there were plenty of funky grooves and instrumentation. Still, wanted more. 3
I am really enjoying this project as it is exposing me to music from other countries and cultures that I would normally never come across. I enjoyed the music even though I didn't understand the language it was being sung in. Very cool!
Very pleasant background music. Lots of african/south american rhythms, similar to Santana but without the blistering guitar. No idea why this would be on the list.
Sweet jam
-first 3 tracks are kind of nice, but not particularly exciting -"Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro" totally kicks into a funky groove that's pretty sweet -I read on Wikipedia that Rod Stewart Got sued because "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" sounded like "Taj Mahal," and it really does, like, a lot, lol. -"A História de Jorge" is pretty fun, and I can actually sing along when he says "Jorge." -"Cavaleiro do Cavalo Imaculado" starts off with a ripping bass line and then cool drums get thrown on top of that. Sadly they kind of go to the background for a calmer vocal delivery. But the intro was pretty fun. -"África Brasil (Zumbi)" gets some cool yell-y vocals -This had some sparks of really cool moments, but they were pretty spread out, and as the album is in Portuguese it is a bit harder for me to follow. If more of the album was like those cool moments and/or it was in English, I could see it potentially bumping up to a 4 or a 5
i liked it! would listen again
I first got introduced to Brazilian music when I picked up David Byrne's excellent Luaka Bop series in the early 90s and Jorge Ben was featured prominently on the Brazilian Classics discs. Ponta de lanca Africano (Umbabaruama) is a classic track that doesn't seem to age. I also love Jorge Ben's smooooth voice, come to think of it all Brazilian singers seem to have velvety smooth voices, dunno if its the culture or the language that causes this. Taj Mahal is a playful tune and its more fun than Rod Stewart's knock-off.
Zomerse muziek, maar dit kon me precies iets minder goed boeien
Nice atmosphere & nice to have something not in English but seemed kind of shallow.
Good beats, good tunes. I liked this more than I thought I would. I don’t think I’ll listen again but this wasn’t bad.
Good groove! Funky guitar work. Didn't understand a word! However, would listen again, could see playing this in background while working on stuff. 3
ok
Best Song: Taj Mahal. Upbeat, joyous music. One I will definitely go back to. Worst Song: Cavaleiro Do Cavalo Imaculado. I like the tempo, I don't like that high-pitched honking in the background. Overall: Decent groovy music. Not terribly memorable, but something I can easily imagine listening to on occasion.
Like walking into a Latin American night club on funk knight.
hlustaði ekki
3/5 not good enough
not bad
This entire album was full of fun beats 😍. Would definitely listen to again!
Idéal pour bien commencer la journée.
Neobično, ali lipo. Slušala san dok san čitala i dobro dođe ko pozadinska glazba
My heart sank when I saw the cover - oh no, another jazz album, I thought. But I was pleasantly surprised! Some really lovely music.
Not great not terrible, had some good rhytms
Suprisely funky, dont hate it
Started with some great bluesy, funky samba. But towards the end it felt a bit samey
Not an album Iv heard of, found this enjoyable no idea what the lyrics mean but does have a good grove to it.
The music is lively, funky, fun. It gets you moving. But for me the lyrics are the most important and engaging part of any song. Not speaking the same language as Jorge makes it hard for me to enjoy it. Not into foreign or world music, I’m just not. Musically though it was much more of a joy than some of the other crap on this list.
Not my style but good bar music.
Yeah, good. Not particularly something I'll want to listen to again. Very interesting to hear Rod Stewart's plagiarism, though.
Sve u svemu čudno i zanimljivo
I like. Love the cover. I'm not sure what to rate it A 3
Primera mitad interesante y divertida. Bossa-funk-africa.
Very cool!
I enjoyed this much more than I had anticipated.
I can dig it!
Funky! Recognized some sounds I didn't know were borrowed from Jorge
One of those albums that I listened to the whole thing and didn't even realize it. It was not what I expected. It's hard for me to rate cause I'm not sure I really listened. It just kinda happened in the background.
I enjoyed this. Not something I would listen to regularly, but I'm happy it was on the list. 3 stars.
Brazilian samba funk?
Fun and upbeat. Gave me a pep in my step on my way from work!
This was like Bob Marley, Isaac Hayes, and - like - Jason Mraz had a baby. I mean that in a good way. It was funky and fun to listen to, even though I had no idea what he was singing about. I probably won't ever listen to it again, but I enjoyed it and it is well-deserving of a spot on this list. (On a side note - how did this guy not sue the pants off of Rod Stewart for stealing the melody from Taj Mahal and using it to record Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?).
interesting, like the energy in this
Ik kon dit waarderen.
album needed subtitles
Easy listen! 3 stars but only because I like some of the people inspired by him better. -1 star cause the album art creeps me out a little.
Brazil tunes
3.5/5. This was alright, nothing really stood out to me. I liked it, however, because I have not heard a lot of music like this.
Nice fun album. More than 3 but not quite 4.
This was good fun! Got me bopping.
Not my taste but a nice album. lots of bongos
B R A S I L low-key better than expected. OG Taj Mahal comes from this album
3.5 decent background vibes
The music is ok but I can't understand a word! ;-)
I've never willingly sat down to listen to a Brazilian Afro-Cubano-Salsa-Pop record. The experience of África Brasil by Jorge Ben was eye-opening. The influence of this type of music and this album, in particular, is easy to pick up. My issue with some different styles of global music is that the repetitive rhythms and verses get frustrating and this record does not difer, still a really good listen.
This is a very good album. It’s eclectic from track to track. Some tracks rock and are full of electricity and some are smooth with a tropic blend. But the one thing that was consistent was that all the tracks slapped - it’s a banger for anytime. Top tracks O Filosofo Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro Taj Mahal Cavaleiro do Cavalo Imaculado
I liked it much more than expected. Especially the first "side".
Good music, but not something I enjoy listening to.
Not as much my style, but enjoyed the rhythms and sounds. Appreciate the talent. This is not something I would listen to much, but can't deny the album is pretty great.
Chill vibes
Pretty good, enjoyed this one even though it wasn't really my vibe.
Afro-Brazilian-Samba record. Released in 1976. Joyful, no doubt. Probably means more if you were there in the first place.
I think Taj Mahal is my favorite so far...I'd say this album feels like something nice to have on in the background and passively listen to.
Really fun album. Hadn't heard of the artist before. I doubt I'll listen to this again -- just too frenetic most of the time for my own personal preference -- but I appreciate how good it is.
Besser, aber Latin einfach nicht mein Ding!
fun and bright Brasilia.
Nota:6/10
Grooves deeper than the Grand Canyon. Smokin' samba soul.
Yea it was ojay
started strong - squeaky straw meant I gave up. cool though!
.
Not to may taste, but fine within it's field
Feel the rhythm, feel the ride, Jorge Ben Jor, it's samba time! Good enjoyable 3*
Enjoyable Samba boppery
I liked this. Funky. Interesting.
Fuelled my 5g mania.
cool and funky, just not my thing
Its cool. Afro Brasilian lounge jazz. Taj Mahal is a time capsule.
“O Plebeu” rubbed me the right way. And way to steal the “Taj Mahal” melody, Rod.
Samba funk with spicy percussion and guitar. 6/10, would like to see more variety/free improv, as well as a timbre change-up.
Kind of fun.
more groovy ensemble brazilian music
Ok
1st hearing this - I like it!
strong fun energetic album. even though there's not a word on it i understand, i enjoyed the cool brazilian sound. almost a 4, but i don't think i'll really return to this.
Mm very enjoyable spanish VIBES
At first I was like hmm but I got into it afterwards, pretty nice
Enjoyed the sound
Favorites: Ponta de Lança, Hermes, O Plebeu, Xica, Historian, Africa Brasil One of the greatest Brazilian albums, Jorge blends funk and samba in his career defining album.
Foreign language albums are tough to judge on lyrics, obviously, but the rhythms were nice and I enjoyed it.
great
not my favorite jorge ben jor album
funky beats and latin feeling blues
Not really my usual thing, I really enjoyed this though. It doesn't sound anywhere near as old as it is, the production values are great, it's all so crisp and clear. There are super funky beats throughout, and despite not understanding a word of the lyrics, I find myself humming along because some of these songs are obscenely catchy. A very nice surprise to find.
Quite nice to have in the background.
Liked this from the first few seconds... Will be listening to this more
Samba, soul-vibes, brasiliansk, rytmisk, velkomponeret
Catchy as hell. Some of the lyrics are pretty clever, from what I could tell by reading them on Google Translate, but it doesn't really come across in the music, so I'm hesitant to give a higher score. A worthy entry that I probably won't think about again. Best track: Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma)
starts out pretty strong also african vibes, but way funkier
Listened, but wasn't really into it.
I really like his voice, the funky songs are kinda mid so far. Two songs in. These middle songs nice I love the o plebeu la la la la la part. A historia has a great rhythm in the beginning Not usually a fan of boogie or anything like that but this was a solid listening experience. I would play this at a party it would be cool 2nd to last song absolute banger
The album often reminded me of afrobeat, but with a Brazilian flavor and Portuguese lyrics. While I can appreciate the energy, rhythms and musicianship, the style simply does not connect with me very much.
Couldn’t understand a lock but I didn’t hate it. I am sure he’s a legend in Brasil
Not my style at all. ★★
nope. Dazu in einigen Songs harte James Last Vibes.
Not my style. Sounded fun though.
some catchy tunes.
Fun, so funky and of a specific time!
It's okayy but not my cup of tea
Ei mun musaa mutta arvostan silti.
Very well done, but absolutely not my kind of vibe.
Previously unknown. Fun.
I noped out by track 6. The squeaking sound (cuíca) is driving me up the wall. Will I listen again: sorry no
once again: not my kind of music
Good but also it’s in another language so it’s harder to get into I like the background singers Probably like 2.5 Favorites: ponta De lança africano, taj mahal
2.5
That I didn’t realize it had moved to a different album while listening on Spotify…
I’d feel bad giving this three, but it’s not really a two
Funky
Peppy and fun.
Truly fun funky music, I couldn’t find anything to dislike about it but could easily forget it.
not my vibe but i see the vision
Another album I could have lived my life without hearing
bizzarro ma non mi dispiace troppo
nothing special in it
pleasant sound for a hazy summer
..
na kraju mi je, nažalost, bilo prenaporno i bezveze...
I like it, but i wont listen to it again.
Not my genre
Didn’t care for
