It's a nice listen. Lots of funky, upbeat jams and cool instrumentation, and he has a nice voice to boot. It's not my usual listen, but I appreciate it.

Quite enjoyed this - a new one on me. The opening track may be the best footy-related song after those two by The Fall. But the relentlessly sunny vibe wore off eventually on this grey and damp Monday morning. Do I think it's sexy? Maybe just a little.

This floated from start to finish. It passed me by during a wfh session. There was little pause for thought. I wasn't distracted, but I wasn't drawn in either. The Portuguese lyrics probably had something to do with it. I liked the rhythms and drum loops. It sounds as though it could have been recorded this year, and not the mid '70s. A useful listen, but not a life changer for me.

23rd February 2023 Listened while having a busy work day and dad plaster boarded the fireplace in the front room. Chilled evening fell asleep watching nobody. Blues, Afro beat, funk all mixing together in a spicy stew. 3.5 if I could.

Took me back to our honeymoon in Brazil. Enjoyable but unremarkable.

Love the instrumentation. The album seems a little ahead of it's time. Some songs do have a 70's feel to them, but the whole album seems newer than it is. The negatives: I have no idea what he's saying. I'm guessing this is in Portuguese? But it sounds French? And this just isn't my type of music. I can appreciate the talent in the album though.

Some cool jams, I love foreign musicianship and takes on famous chord progressions, especially the unique rhythms and singing style, but I felt the songwriting could have been a bit more diverse to make the songs stand out from each other a bit more.

Enjoyable standard 3 star world music album

Boy is this a strange album- made in the 70's it doesn't sound like anything i've heard before? I can't even decide if I like it or not. Brasil meets Africa I guess. It has a 70's lounge Musak vibe too.

Perfect album for doing work. Had this on and things flew by. Really enjoyed the beats and rhythms. Not sure if I’d listen outside of this but glad I did.

There are some great vibes on this album.

So much of world music is just pure fun. Talents making music, and sharing their sound and culture with the rest of the world. Jorge Ben Jor does all that here, with zero pretenses and a huge display of love and pride for the art he's making. Even if I walk away from this album thinking that it's not exactly my cup of tea, I can find many things to appreciate and love about it - and certainly a lot of songs to dance and groove to. Standout tracks are Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro and Camisa 10 Da Gavea.

The style of Jorge Ben Jor’s “Africa Brasil” is a pretty fun mix of diverse influences. But with lyrics in a language I don’t understand, unless the vocals really lend themselves to the atmosphere created by the music then there seems to be a ceiling for my enjoyment.

Una sorpresa este disco. Me han gustado bastante "Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro" y "Taj Mahal". En general es curioso ver sus influencias (copia?) en otros músicos brasileños, desde Carlinhos Braun a Sepultura. Lo dicho, un descubrimiento (para un ignorante como yo).

i hadn’t heard of jorge ben jor and i honestly regret not having heard him before because even with the first song it was already pretty good. my favorite songs were: Ponta De Lança Africana, Meus Filhos Meu Tesouro, Xica Da Silva, and Camisa 10 Da Gávea. a good album!!

It's in a different language, which makes it hard, but the music is pretty good. Portuguese funk. I enjoyed the whole album!

Thought I'd enjoy this more. I love a bit of Brazilian afrobeat but that squeaky drum they use drives me up the frigging favela. Less rhythmic or exciting as I'd anticipated, subtle, good for doing something else to. Far from life changing but could have on again no problem

I've never heard of this before, so I'm going in completely blind, and I kind of like it that way. First impression of the first minute of the first track, this is pretty dope. Puts me in mind of Los Yorks. Oh the bass in O Filosofo hits. The music is still really good several tracks in, but the lyrics are getting a bit gratingly repetitive by Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro. The progressions in Taj Mahal sound a lot like Rod Stewart to me lol Da Ya Think I'm Sexy. The music and layers just sounds really ahead of its time.

A fun, bouncy album that I couldn’t begin to understand due to language barriers. But that said, it was a very uptempo album that would provide fun dancey vibes to any party and make the day a little brighter.

It's not really the kind of music I like, but it's definitely not bad and there are some parts I quite liked. In particular, I enjoyed the jazzy/bluesy guitars which are somewhat untypical for the style. The guy also has a good voice. Giving this 3.5 stars, but rounding down as it didn't really grab my attention.

Africa AND Brazil, that's a lot of beats.

After the first two tracks, I almost called this a snap four star album. The subsequent tracks dipped a bit, lowering the overall album to a high three, but they were still very good, and the album is overall still very enjoyable.

I'm not super familiar with MPB or samba funk so probably not the best person to evaluate it. Nevertheless, even if I try to look beyond my own exposure and preferences (e.g. way too much cuíca for me...), I would say this is some decent, easy listening with a just a few tracks standing out from the rest.

Quite fun and good melodies but did get a bit boring after a while.

An enjoyable African-Reggae album. The tracks were forthright enough to keep me interested, but not so melodically demanding as to take my attention away from other things. Some of the instrumental choices (see: the prominent 'woo!' sounds on most of the tracks) grated on me a bit, but I can definitely see myself turning this on and vibing while getting some work done in the future.

it just kinda went along in the background in its own flow. nothing I would write home about, but also nothing I would actively turn off.

Shucks, another horizon-broadener I wanted to like more than I actually liked. Love the energy though! And the song "Taj Mahal" made me wonder why it's so familiar - which made me find Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" - which made me find that although i can't stand him, that song is BOSS.

I really enjoyed the 2nd half of this album, probably worth 4 stars, but the first half dragged it down to 3. I've never listened to much Brazilian music so this was a fun time. The fusion of genres had me bopping along.

It has a lot of that tropical instrument that I can't name but that is often featured in comics or whatever.

Had one song I really liked. Might have a good song for Road Work.

Fun, listenable Brazilian Samba? Rock? I'm not sure about the genre. Not enough hooks to draw me in though and that in combination with Lyrics I can't understand made it feel almost like jazz and a bit too abstract.

I usually get excited when you i get world music. I was surprised by the shortish 3-4 mins tracks and it didn't really grab me. There were no memorable hooks and it kinda washed over me. However there were plenty of funky grooves and instrumentation. Still, wanted more. 3

I am really enjoying this project as it is exposing me to music from other countries and cultures that I would normally never come across. I enjoyed the music even though I didn't understand the language it was being sung in. Very cool!

Very pleasant background music. Lots of african/south american rhythms, similar to Santana but without the blistering guitar. No idea why this would be on the list.

Sweet jam

-first 3 tracks are kind of nice, but not particularly exciting -"Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro" totally kicks into a funky groove that's pretty sweet -I read on Wikipedia that Rod Stewart Got sued because "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" sounded like "Taj Mahal," and it really does, like, a lot, lol. -"A História de Jorge" is pretty fun, and I can actually sing along when he says "Jorge." -"Cavaleiro do Cavalo Imaculado" starts off with a ripping bass line and then cool drums get thrown on top of that. Sadly they kind of go to the background for a calmer vocal delivery. But the intro was pretty fun. -"África Brasil (Zumbi)" gets some cool yell-y vocals -This had some sparks of really cool moments, but they were pretty spread out, and as the album is in Portuguese it is a bit harder for me to follow. If more of the album was like those cool moments and/or it was in English, I could see it potentially bumping up to a 4 or a 5

I first got introduced to Brazilian music when I picked up David Byrne's excellent Luaka Bop series in the early 90s and Jorge Ben was featured prominently on the Brazilian Classics discs. Ponta de lanca Africano (Umbabaruama) is a classic track that doesn't seem to age. I also love Jorge Ben's smooooth voice, come to think of it all Brazilian singers seem to have velvety smooth voices, dunno if its the culture or the language that causes this. Taj Mahal is a playful tune and its more fun than Rod Stewart's knock-off.

Quelle désillusion... Comme vous le savez, eltrapeze et moi-même, robanniversaire, avions prévu de fêter un an de générateur en cette magnifique journée d'hier. À cette occasion, c'était l'album Nevermind de Nirvana, l'un des rares poids lourds encore cadenassés, qui allait être généré par Robert. Ce dernier ne l'avait pas confirmé mais l'information avait fuité depuis un bon moment déjà. C'est pour cette raison qu'eltrapeze et moi-même avions conjointement décidé de signer la veille un « pacte de non agression » afin de mettre en parenthèse le conflit ouvert qui faire rage entre nos deux camps le temps d'une soirée festive qui allait se dérouler au domicile de Robert. Tout avait été organisé par son fils Mike Ladd. Nous devions au cours de l'après-midi dresser une grande table au milieu de la pièce et apporter biscuits apéritifs et boissons. Le moins que l'on puisse dire est que la fête ne s'est pas passée comme prévu. Sous les coups de vingt heures, alors que je discutais calmement avec les Beau Brummels, Mike Ladd entra affolé dans la pièce : « Ils arrivent ! Je les ai entendus dans le couloir ! » Tout le monde alla trouver une cachette. Je m'accroupis derrière un fauteuil et eltrapeze derrière une lampe (eltrapeze est très maigre). Soudain, la porte s'ouvrit. C'est alors que nous nous levâmes et nous exclamâmes « Surprise ! » en cœur. L'enthousiasme laissa soudain place à l'incompréhension. Robert n'était pas avec Kurt Cobain mais avec une personne totalement inconnue. « Ehhhhhhh Africa Brazil !!! Africaaaa Brasiwwww !!! » s'écria celle-ci avant d'embrayer sur un baragouinage des plus incompréhensibles. Personne n'osa répondre quoique ce soit pour ne pas risquer de vexer ce monsieur. Une fois les présentations faites, Robert installa le baragouineur sur une scène située au fond de la pièce devant nos regards médusés. Eltrapeze et moi commençâmes alors à enchainer les toasts au tarama pour oublier notre déception. Robert raccompagna finalement Jorge Ben Jor à la porte à la fin de son baragouin. Une fois celle-ci fermée, la totalité des invités déferla sur ce premier et le tabassa pendant de longues minutes, transformant une soirée d'anniversaire prometteuse en un terrible désastre.

Best Song: Taj Mahal. Upbeat, joyous music. One I will definitely go back to. Worst Song: Cavaleiro Do Cavalo Imaculado. I like the tempo, I don't like that high-pitched honking in the background. Overall: Decent groovy music. Not terribly memorable, but something I can easily imagine listening to on occasion.

Not an album Iv heard of, found this enjoyable no idea what the lyrics mean but does have a good grove to it.

The music is lively, funky, fun. It gets you moving. But for me the lyrics are the most important and engaging part of any song. Not speaking the same language as Jorge makes it hard for me to enjoy it. Not into foreign or world music, I’m just not. Musically though it was much more of a joy than some of the other crap on this list.

One of those albums that I listened to the whole thing and didn't even realize it. It was not what I expected. It's hard for me to rate cause I'm not sure I really listened. It just kinda happened in the background.

Brazilian samba funk?

Fun and upbeat. Gave me a pep in my step on my way from work!

This was like Bob Marley, Isaac Hayes, and - like - Jason Mraz had a baby. I mean that in a good way. It was funky and fun to listen to, even though I had no idea what he was singing about. I probably won't ever listen to it again, but I enjoyed it and it is well-deserving of a spot on this list. (On a side note - how did this guy not sue the pants off of Rod Stewart for stealing the melody from Taj Mahal and using it to record Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?).

I've never willingly sat down to listen to a Brazilian Afro-Cubano-Salsa-Pop record. The experience of África Brasil by Jorge Ben was eye-opening. The influence of this type of music and this album, in particular, is easy to pick up. My issue with some different styles of global music is that the repetitive rhythms and verses get frustrating and this record does not difer, still a really good listen.

This is a very good album. It’s eclectic from track to track. Some tracks rock and are full of electricity and some are smooth with a tropic blend. But the one thing that was consistent was that all the tracks slapped - it’s a banger for anytime. Top tracks O Filosofo Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro Taj Mahal Cavaleiro do Cavalo Imaculado

Afro-Brazilian-Samba record. Released in 1976. Joyful, no doubt. Probably means more if you were there in the first place.

I think Taj Mahal is my favorite so far...I'd say this album feels like something nice to have on in the background and passively listen to.

Really fun album. Hadn't heard of the artist before. I doubt I'll listen to this again -- just too frenetic most of the time for my own personal preference -- but I appreciate how good it is.

Gostei do álbum, não é muito o meu estilo devido a toda a questão diria mais rítmica da coisa. Senti que se tronou repetitivo mas também não demorou assim tanto tempo o que permitiu não enjoar das músicas. Achei um tanto estranha a parte do canto, tinha um encaixe estranho parecendo por vezes até dissonante. Destaco a música a História de Jorge. Nota:6/10

Foreign language albums are tough to judge on lyrics, obviously, but the rhythms were nice and I enjoyed it.

Not really my usual thing, I really enjoyed this though. It doesn't sound anywhere near as old as it is, the production values are great, it's all so crisp and clear. There are super funky beats throughout, and despite not understanding a word of the lyrics, I find myself humming along because some of these songs are obscenely catchy. A very nice surprise to find.

Some of the lyrics are pretty clever, from what I could tell by reading them on Google Translate, but it doesn't really come across in the music, so I'm hesitant to give a higher score. A worthy entry that I probably won't think about again. Best track: Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma)

Had not heard this record from the Brazilian artist before. Among his records that I have heard, this one has more of a western focus at times, which might make it a more palatable listen to some people. However, in overall quality it is far behind 'Fôrça Bruta' and 'A Tábua de Esmeralda', which I believe are more iconic records of his discography. 7/10 [SWAP]

Weird brasilian music

It might have been ok, but I cannot stand the sound of the cuíca, which is used on nearly every track.

Interesting, but not for me

If I hadn't have just come off Kate Bush's The Dreaming, there is a solid chance I would have DNF'd this. But after that meticulously curated unlistenable mess, I had to at least accept that this had some groove to it. I wouldn't say I hated this, but it's also a long way from something I enjoyed.

I've gotten to the point where these albums aren't impressive to me. Funkiness can only take you so far, and yeah, it's far from a bad album, but I just don't get any enjoyment out of listening to this.

Es wäre super Musik für einen Soundtrack - aber nicht dass ich mir das noch einmal anhöre (hab am 2.11. schon 2 Punkte dafür gegeben und dabei bleibt es auch)

I wanted to like this more than I did. I'd never heard of the record or the artist and it started well, but it all began to sound a bit samey pretty quickly. I love the brassy sounds and the percussion that characterises a lot of Brazilian music, but that bird-like hooting sound* is maddeningly overused on this record, making it hard to listen to the whole thing all the way through. I could do with fewer whistles too. In short, not for me. *a Cuica, apparently. I looked it up. You live and learn.

When I saw this album pop up I was genuinely really interested. Rightly, or wrongly, I consider myself to have pretty eclectic music tastes and something new, "world" (laziest genre name ever?) And I had high hopes. Unfortunately I was disappointed. I suppose it's an artists perogative to experiment etc. but there is too much funk in this for my liking which takes away from the interest and makes it blander than it might be.

I know EXTREMELY little about Brazilian music. Without being able to understand any of the lyrics, this was good music to have on in the background while working. I really liked "O Filósofo" - the melody reminded me of something but I can't put my finger on it. This was fine. Not a genre I'm into, so not something I would probably choose to listen to again, but I am glad I was exposed to it.

Helt ok album, inget speciellt. Kändes som om många av låtarna antingen var inspirerade av andra eller inspirerade andra. Tredje låter som ”Sugar, Sugar” (1969) i refrängen medan sjätte lät som ”Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” (1978)

Not bad, but doesn't really do anything for me. I'm not into the funky pop-rock sound. The fact that I can't understand the lyrics doesn't help either.

I truthfully did not pay enough attention to this album to know what specific tracks I liked or disliked. Sorry Jorge. Will give it a relisten one day I promise!

I’m glad to learn this musical selection, but would not ever turn to this style by choice. It was fun and felt like I was outside doing the salsa to sunset with a drink in my hand while laughing.

I wish I spoke Portuguese! This was ok, not really my thing. But I was happy to hear some international music.

Part of the reason why I started this adventure, find things I wouldn't have on my own. Enjoyed this. Funky beat, don't understand the words, but the body knows the groove.

This is #day439 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… how am I supposed to listen to this album in the streaming age? Half of the tracklist is blocked on Spotify, and there's no such album on YouTube Music, my second platform for exploring records outside my usual wheelhouse. I was genuinely ready to immerse myself in samba-funk and all that, but alas. Having only checked out the tracks available on Spotify, I'm giving it a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day440.

Okay, but not my bag

Well it was kind of okay but I also did not totally dig it

Unfortunately I am not one of the 10,000,000 RMs who served in Brazil and now loves MPB almost as much as Jesus. So this will be a 2 for me.

Just spent a bit of time in Portugal so I’m used to the strange sound of the language! This album is ok but nothing special to my ears to be honest.

Nice toned , didn’t really hold my attention

This was an ok album. I didn’t love it. It took me a long time to get into it.

My first time listening to this genre of music. Started OK. Loved the drum sound and guitar tone. Background female singers were lovely. Didn’t love the male lead vocal as much. By the end of the album I found a particular repetitive sound absolutely grating. It sounded like a child playing a recorder flute. That said, hypnotizing rhythms and liveliness carry this record. I appreciate it even if I don’t love it.

Instrumentally was decent world music; lyrics were in a language I didn’t recognize (Portuguese?). Eh.

I've been consistent and rating non-English albums as pretty low. This one has decent music, and what I assume are fun lyrics? 2 / 5 stars

It's in Portuguese so it's starting off on the wrong foot...but aside from the language barrier, it's pretty good. It starts leaning into its Brazilian-ness pretty quickly. Taj Mahal is like samba and funk and disco had a three way and no one knows who the real father is. This feels like an untapped gold mine for a DJ.

Listened to before: No At the beginning, I decided to give fully subjective ratings. Does an album work for me personally or not? Otherwise I might have given Jorge Ben a higher rating. Incredibly well made and catchy music, but it's not for me. I always feel bad dismissing non-western music like that and I am glad, that I got to learn about Jorge Ben through this project. But in the end it is not my jam. Rating: 2.5 stars

This was ok, I didn’t particularly care for it and it got kinda samey, it’s right on average for me (2.5/5) and ill round down for the generator

Africa Brasil fits right in with the other jungley works on the list but with a little more rock edge. The album started out great but began to wear on me after a while. I did find the background flute tootin' got a little annoying by the end too. Not a bad record at 2.02 stars.
