I've already heard this album before, and I absolutely love it! One of the best albums to come from Brazil ever!

Lots of wacky sounds

Of the 3 albums I've received so far, this is the one that I enjoyed the most sonically, with beats that get you bobbing your head. The driving rhythm throughout and it not being in English makes it all feel like one long song to me. I don't see this being an album that I revist much, but it was an interesting listening experience. Song going on my "1001 Songs" Playlist: Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma) The first song is what caught my ear the most, the bluesy guitar riff to open is something that I wish appeared throughout the album, but it takes a back seat to the rhythmic dominance.

This is cool. Never heard of it. Kind of a wild mashup, definitely world music, great energy, nice vocals, interesting instrumentation. I'm a bit more than 100 into the 1001 and am discovering I definitely have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to world music.

3.8 - I like the funky guitar riffs that set the grooves, and the plethora of percussions that give a sort of earthy, organic breath as a backdrop. The female backing vocals, and the bird-like squawks and squeals add tropical color. A very danceable record. Standout: "O Plebeu"

Not my style

Enjoyable. Very much my jam. This listen was my first exposure to this album and artist that I’m aware of. Sounds like something that would be in a Wes Anderson film, if it hasn’t already.

This was fantastic! Lots of great guitar tones and polyrhythms. A nice album to end the week with.

This was fire. The rhythms, the energy, the instrumentation. I loved it front to back. This is definitely something that Shea’s going to come home from work, walk in on me in the kitchen preparing dinner, and go “What the heck are you listening to?!” And I’m going to be like “Samba, baby!”

Some heist music rn Killer instrumentation, most of these drum breaks have such a good pace and intensity to them. outside my realm but crazy listening experience. the outro title track is some explosive transcendental stuff, the raspiness of his voice is matched perfectly with the fast drums. Idk what that whooping, bird call sounding instrument is but it’s used perfectly throughout this album. Favs : O Plebeu, Xica Da Silver, Africa Brasil Least fav : camisa 10 da gavea Overall: 88/100

The songs all blend together, but it’s a fun enough vibe that you really don’t mind. Nice to listen to in chunks.

So so so fun and full of bops! Saved Ponta De Lanca Africano, Hermes Trismegisto Escreveu, and Xica Da Silva, but nearly all the songs were memorable and enjoyable to listen to. The moment the album was over I actually re-listened to about half of it. I only wish this was in English and not Portuguese so that I would be more likely to revisit it, but then perhaps I wouldn't find it as appealing. Would love to sing along to the songs though! I would give this a 3.5 if there were half ratings, but bumping up to a 4 because of how much I enjoyed my listen.

Never heard of this guy before, but this is a fun and enjoyable album. I definitely see why he sued Rod Stewart; Do Ya Think I'm Sexy owes a big debt to Taj Mahal.

- Do I have the proper knowledge of cultural context to really judge this? Probably not! I know very little about Brazilian music, nor Jorge Ben Jor's place within its pantheon. I could not tell you what makes this album, specifically, as significant as it apparently is. All I can say is whether or not I enjoyed listening to it. And I did! - Jorge and his band really lock into a groove here. I'm reminded of Sly and the Family Stone, or Funkadelic, or 60s Miles Davis; not in terms of sound, really, but in the way that all the musicians involved seem to know exactly how to play off of each other. You could imagine any of these songs spinning off into a 15 minute jam session and still being great, because there's a palpable energy to these people making music together. - I wish I understood the lyrics; they're quite foregrounded in a few songs and apparently his satirical bent was one of Jorge's claims to fame. I should try and find a translation later. - Great album! I will definitely be listening to this more.

I loved this. Sounds so familiar yet was brand new to me. Can see it as a high influence for Japanese jazz fusion.

BL: never heard of this artist before just as yesterdays album but I hope it is another hit like the Talvin Singh record was. AL: this was also an incredibly strong record. The combination of Brazilian & African rhythms make this a pleasure to listen to, and I reckon even more of a pleasure to dance to. Having two world albums like this in a row is a blessing, and reminds me how much music there is just outside my language barrier which can completely change my world. Bossa nova and samba aren’t my favorite genres. I think the instrumentation, mainly the guitars and brass (I love brass!), through the album. I love Ben Jor’s voice, too! Even though I don’t know all the words of the songs, he sounds like a clever lyricist sometimes.

Brilliant fusion of bossa nova and more traditional western music

This is a super cool record. Favourite tracks: Ponta De Lança Africano, O Plebeu, Cavaleiro Do Cavalo Imaculado, África Brasil (Zumbi). Tag Mahal totally has the same melody line as Rod Stewart's Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? I'm not the first person to notice this, of course. Naughty Rod.

Album 150 of 1001 Jorge Ben - Africa Brasil Rating : 4 / 5 Good funk. Although I didn't understand a word that was said, the music was awesome. This is one that wouldn't usually come to your attention. Recommended.

Had no idea what to expect, but I really liked this. I really enjoyed all the songs even though I didn't know any of the words, and the music made me want to dance. Great blend of instruments and overall great album.

Highlights: "O Filsofo," "Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro," "Taj Mahal," "Xica da Silva" This album is great, but might not be one for the history books when Wonder and Gaye were blending soul and funk with bossa nova back in '71. Without getting into Brazilian music history, it was already in fashion by this release, and African genres were on the way stateside. This was contemporary with Fela Kuti's Zombie. Probably the most important context. Another critic pick seemingly just affirming popular taste and commercial taste solely off the hit opener.

Vibes

Not my thing, but enjoyed the instrumentals and mixing. Has a classic vibe about it, makes you wanna cruise with the windows down.

This is not the best Jorge Ben album, but it's still a too much strong release to do not to rate with 5 stars.

This one is for the blues and jazz fellas. This record jumps between being Rock n Roll, Funk, Jazz, Blues, and Folk and drops your jaw at every turn. No machines, no computers, just humans. 5/5.

No idea what he's singing but I'm here for a funking good time, and that's what I got. I can always rely on the Sth Americans to make me want to move my hips. Not sure when I might listen to this again but it's now on a World playlist for that time.

There us a repetitive groove in most songs - seems like it was made for the dance clubs, and it seems like quite nice background music for parties. The production is good, and it does not sound like an album from the 70s. There are some catchy pop tunes sprinkled in like "O Plebeu". It seems that the Taj Mahal chorus predates Rod Stewart's (Do ya think I'm sexy), and has very much the same harmonic flow. Interesting. The album sometimes gets bogged down in slightly uninspired rhythmic exercises, but then a new melody will come along to get your attention again.

Some interesting rhythms going on here. Had already heard the Soulful version of the first track, which I didn't realise was a cover until now. Can see the influence on later (Max fronted) Sepultura and Soulfly in the drums at least.

So I'd never heard of Jorge Ben Jor before today, but I'm glad the list has introduced me to his work. This is an amazing blend of samba and funk. The instrumentation is amazing and the vocals are wonderful even if I can't understand Portuguese. It's a fun and motivating album that just makes a pleasant summer's day even brighter. I really liked this. Also today I learned what a cuíca is! I've heard it numerous times before but always thought that noise was some kind of wind instrument. Favourite: Cavaleiro Do Cavolo Imaculado

Sounds harsh but all this brasil shit just ends up sounding the same to me. Nice enough if you're by a beach but very unremarkable beyond that.

Jorge Ben shows on this project that he is a decent songwriter. The instrumentation of the album is good, but the singing downgrades it a little. The album really just goes in one ear, out the other. Fav tracks: Umbabarauma, Meos Filhos, Taj Mahal Least fav: Camisa 10 da Gavea 3/5

Well, this was a welcome surprise. Great energy for a summer Monday. Put me in a better mood immediately for a drive to work. Listened a second time thru the funk, good vibes and clean instrumentals all came together to create such an awesome album. 4 stars!

Nice to see the occasional, if still very rare, deviation from mainstream English speaking music. And the music here isn't bad, either. At the same time, it didn't knock me off my feet.

Interesting Rhythmic Patterns

Day 107 I hate football, always did.  I already knew the first song on this album, Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma) in the version by Max Cavalera's Soulfly; I love that song but it's a song about football and we all should agree that music should never be about football. Well, Jorge Ben in 1976 made a whole album of songs about football, and it's a freaking blast start to finish; Umbabarauma and Hermes Trismegisto Escreveu, the first two songs, are an irresistible one-two punch as Afro as Fela Kuti and as funky as Sly and the Family Stone; by the third song, O Filósofo, the Brazilian elements become more prominent, and that's the direction that the record takes from that point onwards. I guess this is the music everybody imagines as being the Carnival soundtrack. The 6th track, Taj Mahal, is possibly the most well-known (and infectious) hook to come out from Brazil. A Histôria de Jorge could be featured in an Italian Poliziottesco movie ambiented in Rio, if that ever existed.  Hooks, that's the word I was looking for. Jorge Ben seems to master the art of hooks impeccably; there's plenty of danceable, sing-along hooks on this thi6 I hate football, but I am going to buy this record, and you should too. Rating: And the whole stadium went "Goooooolllllll"

I couldn’t understand all of the lyrics but it’s still a fun album. I was dancing the whole way through. My only complaint is the squeaking in the background of several songs, I hate that sound.

pretty cool but i don't speak portuguese. i got the gist of a couple songs I read through the lyrics on, but I was honestly too distracted throughout by all the weird noises they were making in the background. meus filhos, meu tesouro had a little yappy dog, a few of them had screeching monkeys, and taj mahal had someone pushing and pulling a plastic straw through a soda cup lid over and over. this has led me to realize that more albums should have weird, annoying sounds as the basis of their instrumentation. favorites: meus filhos, meu tesouro, taj mahal

Never heard of Jorge Ben Jor before, but this is great. If there’s such a genre as ‘samba rock funk’, then I think this is it. Reminds me a bit of Elza Soares at times which is no bad thing, and I suppose not very surprising given theyre both from the same place. Surprised to hear Rod Stewart ripped off Taj Mahal for ’D’ya think I’m sexy’. He agreed to donate all the proceeds to UNICEF which is nice. Will be returning to this.

Didn't mind this, the Brazilian funky blues was an enjoyable combo, worked well as background music. There was a heavily used instrument that sounded like a yappy dog that wasn't for me.

Incredibly funky. I thought this would be more like a lot of the generic World music included on this list, but there are more rhythms, beats, and instruments than you could shake a stick at. Makes you want o dance, and puts you in a great mood.

Don't speak Portuguese, so had no comprehension of any of this. Quite enjoyed the sound though. Probably won't be back, hard to give a fair review without understanding any of it but it wasn't bad. 2.5

When the album started, I wasn't quite expecting the guitar to be such a major focus, but nearly every riff here is super catchy, and the samba style really lends itself to this blend of music that is familiar yet all its own. That final song being so aggressive comparatively puts a nice bow on this extremely well made package. Perhaps the language barrier makes this a tad repetitive, but it is a repeat of only banger after banger, so that is hardly a knock against it. Rod Stewart can eat his heart out when it comes to Taj Mahal, quite frankly. Sick of artists "sampling" (or in this case straight up stealing) amazing music and making it obviously worse. I believe George Harrison when he says he unconsciously lifts a melody from a song, not the "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" guy.

wow! jorge ben jor's áfrica brasil sure was lively, despite it not being a live album. it isn't easy to create that kind of natural energy in a studio. but i found myself clapping, bopping, dancing along to these songs. i had a good time listening! each song was distinct from one another, yet the album as a whole was a fusion of jazz and funk. and then in the final song, ben jor threw us a curveball with that beautiful piano! a joyful listen. worthy of being on this list!

This was, simply put, a fun album to listen to! It was very funky and full of Latin flair. I loved the addition of tropical sounds on this album, as well. Jorge's vocals were great and added to the overall great and fun vibes of the album. No two songs are alike and yet the energy manages to stay consistent all throughout. I would definitely go so far as to say that this has been one of the best albums under the 'world music' umbrella that I have heard on this project thus far!

Nice mix of pop with Brazilian influence. This record makes me a bit more open to worldly records. I enjoyed a good chunk of it. 6,5 out of 10

I really enjoyed this! One thing I notice when venturing outside the 'western blues-inspired' world of music is that there is often less emphasis on vocal performance and that's true here. This guy is a fine singer - on pitch, soulful, etc but for me it may as well be Raffi singing here haha there's so little emotion compared to the 'english language' greats like Robert Plant, etc. He did get going on the last track Africa Brasil thought that was a fantastic recording.

I love Jorge Ben Jor. Honestly, I do prefer his earlier stuff (Take It Easy My Brother Charles is an anthem). But I appreciate the transition in his style that this album represents.

p362. 1976. 2.5 stars Came cold to this, didn't dislike it but wasn't blown away by it either. Unlikely to listen to it again.

I really enjoy it when I listen to it, and I can appreciate the musicianship. That being said it's also very forgettable to me and not something I reach for.

Afro-Brazilian Samba Funk!!!!

This was quite interesting and an enjoyable listen without being earthshaking in any way. It almost gets an extra point just for not being in English, but ultimately I'm not going to listen to this again, so it's a 3. Decent stuff, but not my favourite sort of world music.

I decided to check this one out, it staying here over the weekend certainly boosted its chances and from the first song I was very glad of this. No galician this time but I'll write out my thoughts as the album goes. I love the mix of blues and bossa that this album brings right from the start. The riffy guitars and the choir and call and repeat vocals are just so great. The percussion and groove as well as some other stylistic choices really sit in a great place for me Oh yeah the portuguese vocals obviously are a big thing for the bossa/samba feel lol I can't listen to this with headphones at the moment because I feel like I'm dying of sickness which makes me sad because what little I can hear of the bass guitar is really driving these tunes along Also I think there's an organ buried in there. There's a lot of influence from african funk I think. The way that the horns are playing is quite remeniscent of this more than what is so typical for exclusively bossa nova stuff It's very nice being able to understand a little of what's being sung too. Normally lyrics fly past me anyway so really I would say the input is not a super significant way off of the typical song in english or slower spanish Again, I can't listen to this with headphones, but wft this production quality is insane for 1976 right!? There are albums by, like, the beatles or some really influential jazz artists that sound way worse than this, I mean overall the style also feels way ahead of the curve although I'm not as good at dating other music... So apparently this is this dude's first album on electric guitar!? Damn he plays it so well. For something like afrobrazillian music I think conceptually we should strongly consider the 2 different instruments and although there are obviously elements of both styles, he's certainly not just playing bossa nova on an electric guitar I have fallen in love with this album it turns out, I was growing dissapointed in the selection that this website was putting forth recently especially because I have been able to find so many great albums otherwise, but am so glad I didn't skip this! I also love the vocalisms on this album, at the end of the songs or sort of over the other singing, it's really a great mesh of genres. Cowboy of the immaculate horse is a great name for a song that I'll steal one day I'm sure, I'm glad that the album picked up with this song because I was just about to think that the album was slowing down in the 2nd half, and then BOOM this amazingness!

This album has an interesting sound and it's made well, but this style isn't my favorite. There's also an instrument / sound effect that sounds like a tiny little monkey hooting every couple seconds that I can't stand. I don't plan to return to this one. Minus one star for the hooting noise.

Ik moet eerlijk toegeven dat ik er niet bepaald zin in had toen het machtige algoritme me deze huiswerkopdracht gaf, maar de muziek valt me enorm mee moet ik zeggen. Ik betrap mezelf erop dat ik regelmatig met m'n voet mee zit te tikken op de maat. Ritmisch erg lekker, funky, een prettige stem. Als kaasminnende tatta ervaar ik dit natuurlijk ook als exotisch en daarmee lekker zomers. Alleen die apengeluiden, gemaakt met een soort Zuid-Amerikaanse rommelpot waarvan ik het bestaan tot vandaag niet kende, zijn wel op het randje van irritant soms. Maar dat hoort er nou eenmaal bij. Prima. Voor een paar linkse deugpunten staan we wijd open voor vreemde culturen natuurlijk. 4 sterren, mede ook om landgenoot Vinícius een hart onder de riem te steken.

This hit the spot! Opens and closes with bangers, has a fair few between. I’m largely unschooled in Brazilian psychedelic rock, and would like to more about the sounds than Wikipedia will tell me, for example which did Wham pinch? Bookmarking this. Listened to this three times, probably would’ve listened to this more had I not been pushed down a King Crimson wormhole by companions.

Most of the album is full of funky, groovy world music type songs, which is a plus. Other than that, it kinda blends together at times into just one big song, it's solid for background music for me and was enjoyable.

Never heard of this guy before! I like the album overall, but ever since The Sims 2, I've had a bit of a dislike for the cuíca :') the sound it makes really grinds of me. So I don't think that this is an album I'll randomly put on again, maybe just a few of the tracks.

I really enjoyed this album. I've heard a bit of Jorge Ben's music in the past and liked it a lot as well, so I was excited to get this album. It's inspired me to go check out more of his work. He's great at blending and crossing between genres, so I'll be interested to hear more. This album as a whole was absolutely amazing, the way Jorge Ben Jor uses his own language to sing was amazing And for instruments, everything worked do well and it felt soulful. Overall : This albums was really good and I might be coming back to it

aquela sonzera brasileira que o patriota aqui adora né. eu gosto da maneira como no começo parece que tu vai ouvir uma musica dos stones com riffs de rock, e de repente, booom o samba chega. eu entendo o porque teriam pessoas que não gostariam, justamente por não estarem acostumadas com o jeito brasileiro das musicas, mas eu que cresci ouvindo os sons de samba e esses instrumentos unicos brasileiros me soa muito nostalgico ouvir isso.

Originally a samba artist, Jorge Ben would join the growing popularity of MPB, Brasil's own modern take on bossa nova and samba. This particular take on MPB draws influence from Funk, which has hit it's stride over in the states. The result is fun, high-quality music from Brasil!

África Brasil is Brazilian artist Jorge Ben's - going by Jorge Ben Jor since the 80's - 14th album. This is one of his best-known recordings and it's a milestone in his career because he incorporated African, Brazilian, and American funk genres. This album is popular in Brazil and among soccer fans. It was a great samba funk album, however the lyrics being mostly in another language didn't make it easy to listen to. The musical vibes were good though. I'm sure any Portuguese speaking people would really like this album.

There’s some extraordinarily cool beats and music here. It’s not to my taste but I can genuinely say I understand why people would love it even if I didn’t.

Great album. 20 albums in and this is the first one I’ve previously listened to front to back. It’s both varied and cohesive. Lots happening. Jorgen Ben sings, chants and talks over a varied and fun soundscape. Not quite a five for me, i miss a real standout track that I want to come back to again and again, but a great album nonetheless.

I love how they used the fuck out of that percussion instrument that sounds like a small dog barking.

It was enjoyable enough. Hard for me to rate because I don't listen to that genre a lot, but I enjoyed it, so three starts.

I liked this a lot, wished I could understand the language. It had a unique vibe of having one foot firmly planted in an ancient tradition and the other in the future.

"África Brasil" is the 14th studio album by Brazilian artist by Jorge Ben. It was a switch in his music with more electric guitar and incorporating Afro-Brazilian and American. Other artists including David Byrne and the Ambitious Lovers covered songs from this album. Rod Stewart lifted the melody from "Taj Mahal" for "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" resulting in the royalties being donated to UNICEF. Good move. Ponta de lança africano (Umbabarauma) starts the album off with sort of a bluesy guitar. A funky beat. There's a groove going. Great backing vocals which are throughout this album. The song is about an African football player. "O Plebeu" is a reworked song. An easy groove and more great backing female vocals."Taj Mahal" is another reworked song. It has a dance beat and horns. It's quicker. Oh, yeah, the vocal chorus is "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy." A great, fun song. "Xica da Silva" is a little slower driven by percussion and drums. The melody reminded me of The Style Council. More great vocals. "Camisa 10 da Gávea" has a Caribbean rhythm. There's whistles. A great melody. This sounds like a number of David Byrne and Talking Heads' songs. This album was really an enjoyable listen. Jorge has a tremendous voice. It's easy to keep your head bobbing. The songs are mostly rhythm driven and funky at times. The guitar adds layers. Recommended for just about anyone.

This was fun. I'll probably forget about it in a week, but I enjoyed it.

I don’t know if I really liked this album. I don’t see how it’s influential it just seems like another album? I don’t know if i’m missing something. I see where it could be enjoyed but not really for me.

I don't know - this one may have caught me on a bad day. I kinda liked the first few cuts, good music - and I almost always love that mid-70s creamy recorded sound - and it all fit. Then after ~track 3 or 4 it got boring or lazy or just not-interesting to me. A bit repetitive; sure it's a kind of dance music which that comes with the territory but gimme some variety. Feel like I should be fair and give this a 3 although I'm likely to forget it in an hour... so unfortunately downgrading. Just didn't connect with it. 5/10 2 stars.

I got this in a VMP subscription on vinyl and I remember liking it a lot more than I expected to. On second listen, I started to really like it. It's obvious that it's not standard pop music of US/UK and I can't understand any of it, but it's interesting and that's good enough for me.

My only other experience with Jorge Ben is Mas Que Nada and Forca Bruta...I can't say as a whole that I like this project as much as either of those, but it's still a pretty fun, eclectic album.

What a delightful mix of instruments and rhythms from Africa, Brazil and the funky parts of USA from one of the biggest legend of the genre(s). Jorge Ben (Jor) delivers endlessly pulsating tracks driven by his recently found electric guitar. The album is packed with catchy tunes, but especially the start with numbers such as 'Ponta De Lanca Africano', 'O Filosofo', and 'Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro' is captivating. Also nice to hear 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' hidden in plain sight on 'Taj Mahal'.

I adore Jorge Ben (Jor). He’s a legend in samba and South American musical in general. He’s always capable of delivering catchy tunes and África Brasil is no exception. I felt drawn towards the majority of the songs and the inclusion of the electric guitar brings an extra element of funkiness to his music. I was gonna hand this a four star review, but at the end of the album I had grown so tired of the relentless use of the cuíca that I found myself giving up every time it reappeared.

Despite not knowing Portuguese at all, I definitely enjoyed some tracks. First, second particular I played on loop for a few times. Some songs are hypnotic.

Quite enjoyed this - a new one on me. The opening track may be the best footy-related song after those two by The Fall. But the relentlessly sunny vibe wore off eventually on this grey and damp Monday morning. Do I think it's sexy? Maybe just a little.

This floated from start to finish. It passed me by during a wfh session. There was little pause for thought. I wasn't distracted, but I wasn't drawn in either. The Portuguese lyrics probably had something to do with it. I liked the rhythms and drum loops. It sounds as though it could have been recorded this year, and not the mid '70s. A useful listen, but not a life changer for me.

I'm not the biggest fan of Portuguese artists just because I didn't grow up with that language. I grew up with a lot of Hispanic people around me but not really Brazilian. I did enjoy this album a lot though and I think it was a good first dive into music from Brazil.

23rd February 2023 Listened while having a busy work day and dad plaster boarded the fireplace in the front room. Chilled evening fell asleep watching nobody. Blues, Afro beat, funk all mixing together in a spicy stew. 3.5 if I could.

Took me back to our honeymoon in Brazil. Enjoyable but unremarkable.

Love the instrumentation. The album seems a little ahead of it's time. Some songs do have a 70's feel to them, but the whole album seems newer than it is. The negatives: I have no idea what he's saying. I'm guessing this is in Portuguese? But it sounds French? And this just isn't my type of music. I can appreciate the talent in the album though.

Some cool jams, I love foreign musicianship and takes on famous chord progressions, especially the unique rhythms and singing style, but I felt the songwriting could have been a bit more diverse to make the songs stand out from each other a bit more.

Boy is this a strange album- made in the 70's it doesn't sound like anything i've heard before? I can't even decide if I like it or not. Brasil meets Africa I guess. It has a 70's lounge Musak vibe too.

This album honestly blew my mind! The guitar! The melodies! The passion! Discoveries like these are what makes me love this project so much. I have to look this man up. Perfect album for doing work. Had this on and things flew by. Really enjoyed the beats and rhythms. Not sure if I’d listen outside of this but glad I did.

Same as always, I love Latin jazz! Is that actually what this is? Not exactly. It's definitely got the Latin flair, and some jazz elements, but at times it even sounds rock-y. Apparently this was Brazilian pop music at the time, which is so cool to think about, this being the standard radio fare there. Very cool. Love the little whoops throughout, often reminded me of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man." Side note, but damn, I can't wait 'til we get Head Hunters, I'm 90% sure it's on this list. I only pulled a few tracks out from this album, but this is one is the kind of music I'd never say no to. I always appreciate getting albums from other countries (that aren't the UK). Favorite tracks: O Filosofo, O Plebeu, Africa Brasil. Album art: For a portrait shot, not bad at all. I like that it's a little blurry, he sounds like a guy with a lot going on. Simple but effective. 4/5

This one was great! I had never heard of either the artist or the album. I was a bit leery going in when I noticed it was in a language I didn't speak. Once I started listening, I loved it! I added it to my music library in Apple Music. I would've never found this album if not for this project.

Amazing album, sadly could not listen to it fully on spotify... I love the instruments used; cuica. And the inspiration it provided to other artists such as Rob Stewart. Huge fan, and an amazing taste of Brazilian creativity.

This album was awesome. Very different from alot I've listened to. The drums were immaculate and the frequent use of the monkey sounding drum is perfect. Really enjoyed.

The cuíca is a type of friction drum where the pitch is changed by adjusting the tension on the head of the drum. It has a high pitched squeaky sound and is often compared to a laughing monkey. This instrument is ubiquitous in samba music and is featured heavily on this album. It's sound is unique and instantly recognizable, so keep an ear out for the cuíca player on here! Overall, a great assortment of songs, that instantly invoke the feeling of chilling out around Lapa, drowning in caipirinhas while having not a care in the world. 5 Taj Mahals out of 5 🕌🕌🕌🕌🕌

It’s exciting to get more non-English music today. The album generator seems to have made a good week for that as I also had Miriam Makeba just a few days ago. I’m only familiar with one Jorge Ben song, so I’m excited to hear a full album. Songs I already knew: Taj Mahal Favourites: Taj Mahal, Ponta de Lanca Africano, Cavaleiro do Cavalo Imaculado Today’s album was another rump shaker which is never a bad thing. I couldn’t understand the lyrics, but I could feel the passion coming from the vocals. The instrumentation was interesting throughout, with occasional use of less common sounds, such as whistle. Overall, the music made me want to dance at times, and play football at others. Overall, a very good album that I enjoyed.

I don't understand a lick of Portuguese but dang if it isn't a really sexy language. Despite not being able to follow along with any of the lyrics, I almost gave this a full five-star rating just because it was SO funky and fun. Really the only thing holding it back from perfection is a matter of personal taste. I can't stand the repetitive hooting and shrieking of samba whistles. I full accept that it's part of the genre but it's also stupidly annoying and I can't abide it.

So much of world music is just pure fun. Talents making music, and sharing their sound and culture with the rest of the world. Jorge Ben Jor does all that here, with zero pretenses and a huge display of love and pride for the art he's making. Even if I walk away from this album thinking that it's not exactly my cup of tea, I can find many things to appreciate and love about it - and certainly a lot of songs to dance and groove to. Standout tracks are Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro and Camisa 10 Da Gavea.

This is way better than I thought it would be. Lotsa fun, super dynamic and full of energy. No idea what they're saying but would've loved to've been part of this party.

The style of Jorge Ben Jor’s “Africa Brasil” is a pretty fun mix of diverse influences. But with lyrics in a language I don’t understand, unless the vocals really lend themselves to the atmosphere created by the music then there seems to be a ceiling for my enjoyment.

Lots of fun. High energy. If I knew what was being said, this would be a 5.

Una sorpresa este disco. Me han gustado bastante "Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro" y "Taj Mahal". En general es curioso ver sus influencias (copia?) en otros músicos brasileños, desde Carlinhos Braun a Sepultura. Lo dicho, un descubrimiento (para un ignorante como yo).

This was completely new to me, but I really enjoyed it and gave it two full listens. Very funky and groovy, I especially enjoyed "Ponta De Lanca Africano", "Taj Mahal" and "Xica Da Silva". I'd see myself listening to this again, it would be a good one to play at a party or just while chilling. I only wish I understood the lyrics!

Thought I'd enjoy this more. I love a bit of Brazilian afrobeat but that squeaky drum they use drives me up the frigging favela. Less rhythmic or exciting as I'd anticipated, subtle, good for doing something else to. Far from life changing but could have on again no problem
