Reviews (page 11 of 12)

Agree with the rater that was reminded of sims music

Not great - just couldn’t get into it

Slow, plodding. The sound of a thousand trainer adverts. Of its time i guess but not particularly vibrant or interesting

Hard to get into for me. Good music, but I didn’t understand most of the words. Nothing added to my playlist.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I'd never heard of the record or the artist and it started well, but it all began to sound a bit samey pretty quickly. I love the brassy sounds and the percussion that characterises a lot of Brazilian music, but that bird-like hooting sound* is maddeningly overused on this record, making it hard to listen to the whole thing all the way through. I could do with fewer whistles too. In short, not for me. *a Cuica, apparently. I looked it up. You live and learn.

When I saw this album pop up I was genuinely really interested. Rightly, or wrongly, I consider myself to have pretty eclectic music tastes and something new, "world" (laziest genre name ever?) And I had high hopes. Unfortunately I was disappointed. I suppose it's an artists perogative to experiment etc. but there is too much funk in this for my liking which takes away from the interest and makes it blander than it might be.

I know EXTREMELY little about Brazilian music. Without being able to understand any of the lyrics, this was good music to have on in the background while working. I really liked "O Filósofo" - the melody reminded me of something but I can't put my finger on it. This was fine. Not a genre I'm into, so not something I would probably choose to listen to again, but I am glad I was exposed to it.

Not my vibe

On most accounts this would be something that I think I would have liked, but I just could not get into it maybe it's just me.

French African doesn't do it for me

Helt ok album, inget speciellt. (1978)

Not bad, but doesn't really do anything for me. I'm not into the funky pop-rock sound. The fact that I can't understand the lyrics doesn't help either.

I truthfully did not pay enough attention to this album to know what specific tracks I liked or disliked. Sorry Jorge. Will give it a relisten one day I promise!

I’m glad to learn this musical selection, but would not ever turn to this style by choice. It was fun and felt like I was outside doing the salsa to sunset with a drink in my hand while laughing.

I wish I spoke Portuguese! This was ok, not really my thing. But I was happy to hear some international music.

Part of the reason why I started this adventure, find things I wouldn't have on my own. Enjoyed this. Funky beat, don't understand the words, but the body knows the groove.

Sounds fine, but not my music

It was enjoyable but I really can't get into music I can't understand the lyrics too.

Sim sim senhor!

It’s fine.

Didn’t enjoy this

Correcto

Enjoyed it. Started running together at the end but I liked it

The music sounded ok but of course I couldn’t understand the lyrics which is not great for me anyway.

Bien para tener de fondo, nada mas

Added one song from the album, the rest didn't really click with me. It was okay.

P.S. Varning för stjälande skotte!

It was fine. Taj Mahal is a class. I don't know that I really understand why it's on this list

Dette var rare greier. Gadd ikke høre alt, ønsker meg noe vanlig

Not the best. Some interesting rhythms.

Elements were engaging but not something I’d regularly reach for. 2/5

Not my style

This is #day439 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… how am I supposed to listen to this album in the streaming age? Half of the tracklist is blocked on Spotify, and there's no such album on YouTube Music, my second platform for exploring records outside my usual wheelhouse. I was genuinely ready to immerse myself in samba-funk and all that, but alas. Having only checked out the tracks available on Spotify, I'm giving it a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day440.

Okay, but not my bag

Well it was kind of okay but I also did not totally dig it

Unfortunately I am not one of the 10,000,000 RMs who served in Brazil and now loves MPB almost as much as Jesus. So this will be a 2 for me.

Just spent a bit of time in Portugal so I’m used to the strange sound of the language! This album is ok but nothing special to my ears to be honest.

It's interesting, but not really my thing.

Funky. Sometimes a little too funky. 2.5/5.

Nice toned , didn’t really hold my attention

This was an ok album. I didn’t love it. It took me a long time to get into it.

My first time listening to this genre of music. Started OK. Loved the drum sound and guitar tone. Background female singers were lovely. Didn’t love the male lead vocal as much. By the end of the album I found a particular repetitive sound absolutely grating. It sounded like a child playing a recorder flute. That said, hypnotizing rhythms and liveliness carry this record. I appreciate it even if I don’t love it.

Instrumentally was decent world music; lyrics were in a language I didn’t recognize (Portuguese?). Eh.

Meh, not for me.

Portugués 🙁

I've been consistent and rating non-English albums as pretty low. This one has decent music, and what I assume are fun lyrics? 2 / 5 stars

It's in Portuguese so it's starting off on the wrong foot...but aside from the language barrier, it's pretty good. It starts leaning into its Brazilian-ness pretty quickly. Taj Mahal is like samba and funk and disco had a three way and no one knows who the real father is. This feels like an untapped gold mine for a DJ.

Listened to before: No At the beginning, I decided to give fully subjective ratings. Does an album work for me personally or not? Otherwise I might have given Jorge Ben a higher rating. Incredibly well made and catchy music, but it's not for me. I always feel bad dismissing non-western music like that and I am glad, that I got to learn about Jorge Ben through this project. But in the end it is not my jam. Rating: 2.5 stars

Not for me :( funky beats tho

Bra, tight band. Gillar inte riktigt sången.

This was ok, I didn’t particularly care for it and it got kinda samey, it’s right on average for me (2.5/5) and ill round down for the generator

Africa Brasil fits right in with the other jungley works on the list but with a little more rock edge. The album started out great but began to wear on me after a while. I did find the background flute tootin' got a little annoying by the end too. Not a bad record at 2.02 stars.

You never know what you are going to get when a random foreign album shows up on this list. A handful of them have been surprise hits, some others have been understandable exposure to a foreign genre that doesn't interest me beyond a single listen. Africa Brasil is little bit of column A and a little bit of column B. It opens up with some pretty nice guitar and backbeats with some afro influence. I was digging it for a little while, but unfortunately it isn't able to maintain the level once original novelty wears off. It's a decent entry that features some pretty competent music from a foreign country. Perhaps I would have enjoyed this more had I been able to fully understand the lyrics? 2.29 stars

random Album irgendwie Taj Mahal ähnlich zu as you move your body, as you think I’m sexy…. Melodie Nicht mein Type Verstehe nichts

1976 Largely passed me by. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Nondescript ★★☆☆☆ (4/10)

Perfectly good musicianship, just not my vibe. I don't see how this is any different from the other music on this list from the same niche genre. I didn't hear anything that made this stand out other than the vocals were better than the previous albums. It has some very popular songs with 19M listens (Taj Mahal) and 7M listens (Ponta de Lanca Africano) and 1M+ on most of the other tracks. People like it! I didn't hate it but I'd never give it a second listen. 2 stars

Normal

Heard before: N/A Favorite tracks: O Plebeu This would be a good beach album

clearly very influential but not my personal style of music. rlly liked the first two songs but everything else fell flat for me. 2.5/5

I really wanted to like it and really thought I would after the first couple of songs but the more it went on the less I could shake the feeling (which is unfair, as this probably predates them by decades) that I was listening to the looped whistle and drum presets you get on yamaha keyboards at school. Probably a 2.5 but not enough to give it a 3

Not my vibe, didn't get any joy out of this.

Some good passages, but the songs lose their freshness after a few minutes and sound repetitive.

This album is alright, guy has a decent voice. But the sound of the cuica is just awful, I’ve never liked that instrument. And it’s in every damn song.

Not that keen on this one. Wasn’t offensive to my ears but didn’t find it engaging besides some funky bass lines.

No levyllinen on varmasti liikaa näin tottumattomalle korvalle.

I dug the instrumentals but the vocals weren't really my cup of tea.

A little of this goes a long way.

Not really my cup of team, but an enjoyably listening

I just don’t like his voice. The instrumentals were great.

good album but not my type

I liked the music for the most part, but why does every song have that same noise that sounds like a bird's mating call? I swear I would enjoy these songs more if that wasn't being repeated over and over and over.

This album was quite fun. I don't understand the language, but I did find the music easy to move to and vibe along with. It was an enjoyable listen at first. However, it did lose some momentum to me as it went on. I tend to enjoy albums with variety, and this is a funky, dance album through and through.

I really struggled with this one. It’s my first listen and it was a bit too samba/ funky disco samba for me. He has a good voice and the guitar is really fresh and crunchy but I didn’t really connect with it. Nice to listen to once, and nice to hear more samba and less bossanova, but I won’t be checking it out again.

2.5/5 not my taste

Zuhause, Heidenheim, Deutschland Nicht meine Tasse Tee.

This album was ok. It’s hard to fully enjoy a foreign language album. The rhythms and music were very familiar as I played a decent amount of samba and other Latin style music in jazz bands in my time.

I want to like this, I really do, but I don’t. The music washes over me with little affect.

Veldig masse gnikkelyda

From the description, I thought this would be amazing, but I was not amazed.

Not my thing

Can listen to it, but not my kind of vibe

Funky international, a bit cacophonous.

Good music just not for me.

Sounds like a knock off of acts of the time in western countries.

2 stars

not my style but not bad

Definitely heard the sounds of funk. I can see how this was the foundation.

Nice for a change, but not my jam

Nice album, nog completely my style

2.5-3 kind of fun

Other than the song Taj Mahal, this album really didn't come off as distinct from skng to song. That straw in a cup noise was way too prevalent for me. Not the worst but kinda tedious nonetheless. 2/5

i immediately knew this was not going to be my jam kinda vibey..? but that is all i got

It was ok, background music and chill.

Vibey but didn't feel like listening to the whole thing.

Tough to get into this one with the language barrier. Enjoyed the synthier stuff, the more sparse tracks not so much. Listened to: at 5MW. Favorite tracks: Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro, A Historia De Jorge

Wurde echt anstrengend nach einiger Zeit. Hat am Anfang eigentlich etwas Spaß gemacht. War okay.

I don't understand it but I'm happy for them

First? 3/5 Again? 1,5/5

Africa and Brazil meet in a battle of WHO IS BEST AT MUSIC. Brazil the country has had the olympics and also has a green flag. Africa is an entire continent and brings to the table Nelson Mandela and of course the proud nation of Burkina Faso. Stick around for what will surely be an all-time throwdown between two of the world’s landmasses. Whoever will win is a toss up, but I’m 95% sure the loser will be me. Whoa. This riff goes hard. Jorge is actually not doing what I thought he would. I normally don’t love listening to music in languages I don’t understand, but if I can like death metal, I can give Portuguese a chance. This was a pretty decent start. Holy hell. Jorge. A little too cool. There we go. He backs off. It’s fine. Oh. I prefer when he doesn’t sing. His talking is way cooler. Bit of a snorer here aside form the weird frog instrument. Are those bird noises or an unhinged background singer just going “AH” every few seconds? Much funnier to imagine the latter. This song sucks. Ditto. Oh my god it’s Brazilian disco. If you something something and you think I’m sexy come on Jorge let me know. Frig off Jorge. This could be a rap sample or something. Much cooler. Still middling. Annoying near the end. Chaos and not in a good way. Why is this a seminal release? This isn’t good. THIS CONTINUES TO SUCK POND WATER. I can’t stand this kind of music. Call me what you will. It’s not my sound. This is like listening to a house party that won’t stop. I’m feeling that same mix of anxiety and rage. I’m going to knock on the door. Jorge is not happy that I’m trying to break up his party. He is far too drunk and you can tell from the singing. Most of the other guests have left as they acknowledge it is time to go. It’s 4am and Jorge has been belting out terrible music for 7 hours. He continues to scorch his throat to the bitter end here. This might have been good. This is a pure case of I hate this music. It’s not for me. I can’t say it was poorly put together or lacking in passion, I just don’t ever want to listen to music with this sound. It reminds me of sweating and being in the sun. A lot of people like that, so congrats on the new discovery. I enjoyed the energy at points but at others it made me feel like I was in a. Straitjacket. I was right. I lost this battle. Second round knockout. Somehow after about 80 losses out of 101, I’ll still come back for tomorrow with a couple aspirin and an appointment at a neurologist. 1.5-2 HIGHLIGHTS: Ponta de Lança Africano

Can't understand a damn word, but the music is fair.

Day377 - it was interesting but i was just waiting for it to better

Not bad, but just not my thing. And some stuff is so dated.

Not bad, not really my type of music.

I thought I was going to like this album a lot more than I did. The first song is fun, catchy, and has so much energy that it sets a great tone for the album. But no other song manages to capture that essence, and the rest of the album comes across as skippable and almost annoying with the overuse of sound effects and enhancers. An album that would greatly benefit from "less is more"

Did not love this. Just not my style.

Musically very competent. Just not my thing. 2/5.

Not really sure it’s 2 start worthy to be honest, but whatever. I’d definitely never listen to it again.

I don't know what to say honestly.

Probably classic, but just ok.

A decent time, and not much more than that

**An ok album, might have enjoyed more if in English

Not my style of music

Ok for background, will never listen to again

Non mi ha detto molto..

Great music. Less vocals were disappointing.

2/10 in different language

Bin interessiert an World Music, andere haben mir gefallen. Dieses leider eher nicht so. 2,5 Sterne. In dem Fall abgerundet.

discovered a great artist, but this was a poor album for my ears

World, 1976 -> 2

Multicultural elevator music. Two and one-half stars. The "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" part was a brief attention-grabber.

Well, I think it started out okay, had some good tunes I could get into, but after a while it kinda fell apart for me. Maybe just too much of the same thing? Don't think I will be coming back to it.

Do you like music where you might not understand them but it sounds nice to you? If you do, i feel like Africa Brasil by Jorge Ben Jor might be for you. I personally wouldn't listen to this unless i really had to because i feel like its going to make me fall asleep somehow. I also don't understand what they are saying but they have a nice voice. In the first song it sounded as if they used the clapping of peoples hands in the instrumental. I recommend this to people who might need a relaxing album to put in the background, especially if you understand what they are saying.

Well, I don't know what it means due to it not being English, but instead Portuguese, but I like the repetitive beat and the instruments used throughout the song. I don't necessarily have an opinion about it, but I think that it's a decent song, that is easy to remember, and has a happy vibe

Mostly doesn't work for me, specifically not a fan of the vocals

Was okay - preferred the more contemporary buena vista social club

Culture album

This lacked a lot of the fun surprises that I've found in some of our other world music (is there a less condescending term for that?) from the list, unfortunately. I was really looking forward to enjoying it and it just felt samey after about halfway through.

África Brasil by Jorge Ben is a lively album that blends Brazilian rhythms with funk and soul, making it surprisingly accessible. Ben’s distinctive voice and energetic delivery give the record a vibrant feel. While the album successfully merges traditional Brazilian sounds with contemporary influences, it maintains a polished yet organic production. Its mix of styles offers a fresh listening experience without being overly complex. The result is an approachable and enjoyable record that highlights Ben’s musical versatility. África Brasil stands out for its ability to make eclectic sounds accessible to a broad audience. It’s a solid introduction to Jorge Ben’s work and an enjoyable listen for fans of Brazilian and global music. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 1 STAND OUT TRACK - Ponta De Lanca Africano

This is not for me. I liked some of the instruments, but the singing over the top ruined it

Samba funk.

I don’t get it. This music from other parts of the world all sounds the same to me.

Propably it's just not my taste.

African vibes I guess

Didn't understand a word but the dude is Funky!

Started well, but blended into a tasteless murmur.

Not a fan. It's samba-y and whatnot, but I'm not a fan

Whilst I appreciate the music and the genre crossing sounds made on this album, I can't get to grips with it.

Brazilian pop that’s not very good. Lackluster songs and delivery.

I enjoy the non-english language albums on this list because I most likely never would've listened to them on my own. This one is vibey in parts, but overall a bit too wacky and over-the-top for me.

Not a bad album. I quite liked the funk vibe at first. But its all blends into one. I do tend to find most s. american music very samey though. Their music seems to follow a repetitive pattern for me. Its almost like they sample some music and just put it on repeat for 4 mins. Some good guitar funk and licks going on at times. No particular stand out tracks to me though on a first listen. Some of it reminds me of that brazilian football tune " o bar, obar obar". Still not enough to save the rating for the album tho. Wow, so many 5/5 ratings for this album. Honestly, they must have been smoking crack. Maybe thats the secret to enjoying it. Rating 2/5.

It was all right

Not for me

It was okay

Not bad for some older Brazilian tunes but I don't see myself listening to it unless I am south of the border

A very well produced album, wish I understood Portuguese. Giving this 2. While I did enjoy the project and liked a few songs, I don’t see myself coming back to this often, if at all.

Besides the fact I couldn't understand the lyrics, I didn't think this was too bad. Made me think of being on a beach drinking a Pina Colada. Some decent music and good sounds, but really just not my thing. About 3-4 songs in, they started using an instrument that sounded like a whistle/flute way too much. It started to annoy me. Not bad, not great and probably won't ever revisit, but I appreciated the listen. 2.5

2.5 I guess Jorge’s fusion of Brazilian samba with American funk music is alright, but it really never got me in that groovy, danceable mood that either genre is known for. I feel like it gets close at times, but never quite to a point to ever fully suck me in or leave much of a lasting impression for that matter. Honestly, I think the only song here that I would really walk away saying I kind of liked was the titular and closing track, África Brasil, mostly because it felt kind of angsty, like he was angrily screaming some of the lyrics. Outside of that, the only other song that stood out to me was Taj Mahal, a really annoying track that is retroactively worsened by the fact that it later inspired/was stolen by Rod Stewart for Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? I don’t really hear it that much, but honestly, I wasn't overly invested in giving either song a long and thorough enough listen to really make that determination. Not bad, but it’s not for me. Though, did anyone else hear him asking about Joe Gatto throughout the album? I don’t know what he’s doing since he left the Impractical Jokers either, man.

Not really my thing

Interesting

Well…thank you for this one! Would never have played anything like this before, and I’m glad I did!

I’m afraid this was just too Brazilian for me. While I can appreciate the genre, I just couldn’t enjoy the music all that much.

Ok not really into this

The 2nd best Brazilian album I’ve listened to this week. Nice happy vibe but I’m not loving his vocal. A low 2.

The cuíca isn't as grating as the electric jug but it's pretty damn close.

Funky but all the memorable.

Samba funk.

Interesting but gets old fast.

Not for me but we got it done 💪

Very different from what I usually listen to, loved the variety of instruments. The first song was a banger which I actually knew because its about a soccer player. The rest of the songs didn't interest me, not big into samba or how much he "talk-sings". Taj Mahal was really weird - wish I knew what he was singing about.

Fun but not really for me. All kind of blended together

Instrumentals were great! A fun listen of a genre I don’t often listen to

cool foreign sounds to mix things up from western music, but probably mostly a novelty for me

Couple good songs

1.5/5⭐️ Best song: O Plebeu Worst song: Xica Da Silva Comments: Really not my cup of tea, there were a couple good parts here and there but the songs just weren’t something I would listen to again unfortunately

Fun album but I didn’t understand a word of it

Not my style, I can't relax when listening to this.

During the first tracks of the album, I thought it could be quite interesting. Around the middle, I wasn't interested anymore.

Not my genre. Some songs are good, probably... but the arrangements are not for me. Taj Mahal could definitely become a decent song if it was rock band playing it as a slow ballad.

Reminded me of Lee Scratch Perry. But not as good.

- Not my thing at all but it is insanely groovy and fun

I really wanted to like this album, but I just couldn't get a feel for it.

More bossanova-like Brasilian music.... Not as painful to listen to as the Astrid Gilberto punishment, more variation in rhythm and more lively, but again an hour of utter tropical boredom.

Alright if I was in the mood.

not my typa music

Pretty sure someone was playing a balloon….

Afrikanischer Samba.

It was enjoyable, but because I couldn't understand the lyrics it just washed over me like instrumental music does.

Fun enough, wish I could understand it. Ok.

I don't like dance music or 70s music or apparently Brazilian music.

One or two good songs, some unexpected N64 sounds tracks but overall uninteresting. Good back ground music.

I do not expect harmonic sophistication from ethnic music, but I do expect it to be rhythmically interesting. This was not.

Not my style but good music.

Not my style.

Altmodischer sound - musste damals alles Rock & Funk sein. Ein Irrtum!

Kinda neat

different, but not really for me.

Doesn’t offend

didn't NOT like, but hard to listen to with ADHD

Nicht mein Ding

This is slightly more elevated than a dollar bin album, but not more than a $2 bin album.

Instrumentals are good, but I'm not a fan of foreign language music that I can't understand at all.

Not really my style

I didnt finish the album. I can tell it is quality music but yesterday I couldn't get behind it being in Portuguese. I would love to hear it in English but I am sure it would lose some of the magic.

This is the first album on the list that was completely unfamiliar to me. I'm really glad for that - I haven't spent much time learning about music in recent years and I've been missing that. Also, the scant bit of Brazilian music I've heard before I've liked (well known Bossanova type stuff). That said, to me this album was more "a sound" than "songs", in part because I don't speak Portuguese.

Transport me to a movie from the 70s where I'm in a upscale hotel lobby of a foreign country.

Not in English. Good beat though.

Cute but not for me. I liked the monkey sounds though.

Occasionally interesting but not anything I’d ever listen to again

Didn't hit right.

not really my kind of thing, can appreciate some of the funk.

Don't speak Portuguese, so had no comprehension of any of this. Quite enjoyed the sound though. Probably won't be back, hard to give a fair review without understanding any of it but it wasn't bad. 2.5

p362. 1976. 2.5 stars Came cold to this, didn't dislike it but wasn't blown away by it either. Unlikely to listen to it again.

Not bad but not really for me.

Power to those who can find something in this. Just like chilli chocolate, just not for me.

This album has an interesting sound and it's made well, but this style isn't my favorite. There's also an instrument / sound effect that sounds like a tiny little monkey hooting every couple seconds that I can't stand. I don't plan to return to this one. Minus one star for the hooting noise.

Never heard of this guy before! I like the album overall, but ever since The Sims 2, I've had a bit of a dislike for the cuíca :') the sound it makes really grinds of me. So I don't think that this is an album I'll randomly put on again, maybe just a few of the tracks.

África Brasil is Brazilian artist Jorge Ben's - going by Jorge Ben Jor since the 80's - 14th album. This is one of his best-known recordings and it's a milestone in his career because he incorporated African, Brazilian, and American funk genres. This album is popular in Brazil and among soccer fans. It was a great samba funk album, however the lyrics being mostly in another language didn't make it easy to listen to. The musical vibes were good though. I'm sure any Portuguese speaking people would really like this album.

There’s some extraordinarily cool beats and music here. It’s not to my taste but I can genuinely say I understand why people would love it even if I didn’t.

I don’t know if I really liked this album. I don’t see how it’s influential it just seems like another album? I don’t know if i’m missing something. I see where it could be enjoyed but not really for me.

Not sure if I just didn’t get it, maybe this is one of those albums I’ll like after another listen. But I didn’t dig this too much and at time felt agitated with songs.

Allright det her.

This is slightly more elevated than a dollar bin album, but not more than a $2 bin album.

Not my cup of tea.

T3B 1. Ponta De Lanca Africano 2. Hermes Trismegisto Escreveu 3. Xica Da Silva The monkey drum was almost driving me nuts. Very jarring at times.

Not a fan

I'm not Brazilian and I don't speak the language, so it was a non-starter for me. I did listen to all of it, and the tune was catchy in parts, but it wouldn't have been my choice.

Groovy and Spanish

Veldig masse gnikkelyda

Not my style

I'm too depressed to dance to this tropical nonsense.

Not really my taste.

It was interesting I guess

Africa Brasil is not better than the countless other stuff we've had of a similar ilk. 2/5.

Listen to Samba Esquemo Novo instead, this aint it fam

C'est pas mes 2 pays préférés

Bra sväng men inte mycket mer

This was really not my type of music. By the end I found it grating to the ears.

Nothing much against it, but not my cup of tea. I like some Sergio Mendez, but this wasn’t quite up to that level.

Kind of boring, found myself drifting off and not really paying attention to the music.

October 11, 2021 I liked the first song but it kind of went downhill from there. OK but I didn't get very into it.

This is undoubtedly one of the better attempts to incorporate funk into Brazilian music, but that isn't saying much. It just means that it isn't outright embarrassing like Tony Tornado's output, another James Brown imitator. Actually, that's not quite fair. Jorge Ben is more taking the path of tackling American funk by way of Fela Kuti, which is to say that he's diluted and dumbed down the American funk elements before incorporating them, which probably also accounts for Africa Brasil's appearance on this list. (It also probably doesn't hurt that the opening track from Africa Brasil was included on the David Byrne anthology Beleza Tropical: Brazil Classics 1.) That Fela strategy isn't as difficult as straight imitation and allows for a more balanced fusion as well. There's another reason using Fela as a touchstone makes sense. The call and response elements so central to Fela's music are also central to the Samba-de-Roda style that came out of Bahia, which is explicitly African in origin. That's all well and good, but the unfortunately, the result is rather bland. The funk aspect is generic, and the main thing, aside from Jorge Ben's voice, that gives this music some Brazilian character is prominent use of the Cuica drum, with its characteristic talking squeak. Also, the melodies are undistinguished, even if Ben's singing is fine. All this makes for a pleasant enough, if dull listen. But when you think of of all the absolutely magical Brazilian albums they could have picked for this list, it's a real head scratcher. Well, actually not so much, if you want to be lazy and follow mainstream critical thinking, led by tastemakers like David Byrne (nothing against him). The sad thing is, as weak as Brazilan/funk fusions usually are, there are much better attempts at American funk/Brazilian music that could have been chosen, like Banda Black Rio's Maria Fumaça or Dom Salvador E Abolição's Som, Sangue E Raça. But that would require actual taste and critical thinking

Inoffensive background music. Decent stuff but won't be listening to it again.

This was different. I wasn't a huge fan, but it's good for what it is.

Not really doing much for me

Not my favorite style of Brazilian.

Cant understand but still good, Brazilian. 5/10

Taj Mahal and Xica da Silva are the only slightly memorable songs. Taj Mahal was the basis for Do Ya Think I'm Sexy by Rod Stewart.

not my thing

Funky Brasilian/Latin American beats. Not really my jam, but in the right setting this could be a cracker album. Definitely think the back half of the album is better than the front. Had to re-listen to Rod Stewart's 'Da Ya think I'm sexy' to hear the similarities in 'Taj Mahal' that would constitute a settlement. Best: Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro; África Brasil Worst: O Plebeu

The horns are ridiculous. It sounds like Donkey Kong level music. But it also has funky upstroke guitar.

first song is good. so far it’s good three songs in but it’s not something i would listen to. kinda repetitive but not too annoying. average i like the fast pace though. 2/5

Ok lads we’re up to 1000 albums. We just need one more and we’re done We got a foreign language album in there yet? Nope? You know of one? My cousin Anthony knows a guy. He’s like Mexican or Puerto Rican or some shit. Ok I think we got our book.

Bit boring

Smooth sounds but nothing standout. Won't revisit.

Not as bad as expected - decent rhythms and guitar throughout but can’t see me looking this one out again

Didn’t fully listen cuz not in the mood

Alright

nice but completely forgettable like all those brasilla ones. 2.

It was alright

Con ritmo. Bastante desconocido.

What in the world? Is Taj Mahal a cover of "If you think I'm sexy"...? It's upbeat and weird.

1st track is great, rest are a bit meh

Inte för mig riktigt!

Too much for me

Only half listened

Not sure how good this is, being unfamiliar with this type of music.

This just isn't my music taste. Took a while to get through
