One of my all time favourites! Monster sounds dated now, though it was one of my favourites when it first came out. So Appalled and Devil in a new Dress are also weaker than the rest. Runaway 10/10 Hell of a Life 10/10 Gorgeous 10/10 All of the lights 10/10

Kanye West is a genius. But geniuses have been know the flirt with insanity. There is no song on this album that won’t get your foot tapping or your head nodding. And the list of collaborators is a who’s who in music.

I've never been a huge fan of Kanye, like a unpredictable toddler that sometimes shows promise. He's good but not amazing and the same goes for this album. Also modern day albums always seem to go on longer, sometimes twice as long. Is this because of ego or do the artists just have a lot of mid rated songs and they can't decide what to put on the album.

You pretend you're going beyond the rap genre because you're a new renaissance genius and you act like that (yes we all know you're crazy, we don't fucking care). The truth is that your music is pretentious AND lame. You're not ELP nor Yes, but a boring individual. Your version of Iron Man is stupid and worst of all, pretend to be clever. Music is so stupid nowadays.

I can completely compartmentalise my personal feelings about an artist away from how I feel about their music. So with that in mind, while he may be an absolute dick, I really am loving this. In fact, more than other rap albums I have heard. It actually feels very retro 90s rap and I think the vocals in the background in every track lift it to a new glorious dimension.

I am not the target audience for this, and I'm not convinced there is a target audience for this. I think the dude just did his own thing and doesn't care what others think, so props for that. But also, yeah, I won't be listening to this again.

It's almost impossible to like Kanye the person at this point, but the music ain't bad. That said, I was glad when it was over. It was interesting in parts but more than I needed.

Fantano was lowkey right on his scoring. This album's quality drops off a cliff after All Of The Light and it doesnt really bounce back despite trying on some tracks. Given how Ye's obssession with porn and delusions of grandeurs have gotten worse, it almos feels like he was foreshadowing his own current demise, but if anything, it doesn't make the album any better, moreso it servers as merely the cutting off point from his peak to his fall from grace. Important record, but nevertheless inconsistent.

Fuck Kanye but I'm afraid this album is quite fantastic.

Man, this album is so hard to rate because on one hand, it used to be one of my favorite albums that got very regular playtime but on the other hand, Kanye is a racist Nazi now and I generally boycott music from Nazis. It's been years since I've listened to this album at this point and while I enjoyed hearing some of my old favorites from prime, non-Nazi Kanye, it doesn't have the same charm as it used to no knowing what Kanye turns into years later. 3/5. Easy 5 if he wasn't a Nazi, straight up 0/1 if it wasn't such a good album, objectively, so I'll split the difference.

I really liked this one. It reminded me of albums like Igor and Because the Internet that are full of lush production that pull from different inspirations. Some of the songs were a bit too self aggrandizing for my taste but overall well made album

Second Kanye album from the generator and I'm starting to realize all the music dudes online lied about this album being one of the best albums of all time. It's not even one of the best rap albums of all time. The samples on some songs were really cool but the rest was meh. If it wasn't Kanye, the album would've been cooler but sadly it is him 2/5

Fuck Kanye West, but this is his last good album, and it's brilliant. Brilliant enough that Kanye's worst ramblings (at the time) were able to be excused by his talent. But this was before he became an actual Nazi. The albums of Kanye's chosen for the list are largely not his best in my opinion, except for this one. But this album makes me sad because it's so good, and he'll never get back there again. He's too hate-filled and believes his own hype too much. This album does fall off a little near the end with some of the epically long songs, but the first few songs are possibly the best he's ever done. I have to separate the art from the artist to rate it properly, and in that case it truly deserves 5 stars.

It is fine... The production is very solid obviously but each song drags on a bit too long considering the fact that there is little of substance to be extending by the time Ye is done pontificating on how people dislike him and how lowly he views women. I am not a fan of the lyrics either beyond the Monster Mash going on about 20 minutes in. That being said I did laugh out loud when the 21st Century Schizoid Man sampling began. Music For Assholes

I think the beginning of this album is fantastic; I really dig pretty much everything up to and including "Monster". After that, it's a bit shakier for me, and I certainly start to feel the length. I suppose my only hot take is that, while I love the outro of "Runaway", I'm not a huge fan otherwise. I respect some of the sincerity of the verses, but the chorus totally takes me out of it. I certainly don't see myself rushing to listen to it again any time soon, but in time, I think it could potentially rise in my estimations. 3.5/5

15 years ago I would have rated this 5 stars. Truly is a work of art. However, being unable to separate the art from the artist, MBDTF gets two stars. A star was added to the rating to take into account the artistry of the album, but Ye’s past work doesn’t get a pass from me for his hurtful and idiotic comments today.

I've never knowingly listened to Kanye before, so I was going into this completely blind. It was much better than I had expected, but it still is not my thing. Monster was a lot of fun, especially the Nicki Minaj section.

I really didn't want to like this album. As a rule i want very little to do with Nazi sympathisers. I liked the album but i won't be listening to it again

Honestly better than I expected

To cite my prologue from Eric Clapton, Kid Rock, and many more - bad people can make good music. Kanye West is an amazing producer, a good rapper and an okay writer. That's fine, he brings in a ton of features and cowriters to fill the gaps and puts together a good album that even though personally, I'm not a fan of his style I did enjoy. 4/5

Not your typical Hip-Hop album, but then Kanye West isn't your typical Hip-Hop artist. Wikipedia also gives the genre as Progressive Rap, which for an an album that samples Mike Oldfield's "In High Places" and King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man", as well as using the tune from Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" is probably a fair description. Highly experimental in places. Apart from the misogynistic lyrics in places, (e.g. "Blame Game"), I quite liked the album.

Kanye West-My Dark Twisted Fantasy Incredibly underwhelming album. Wonderful production and technical aspects but the lyrics are trite and often insipid and Kanye is an incredibly monotonous rapper.

My first instinct was to give this a hard pass but I'm committed to giving every album a chance. Made it halfway through. There's no denying the talent and the production; it's just not for me. And I don't need to listen to a jerk boast about how great he is. There's enough of that in the news these days.

In parts truly beautiful, dark, twisted, and fantastic. However, for my personal taste, it's a little too commercial/geared towards mainstream tastes and the tracks are too long. Probably deservedly Kanye's most successful work, but I also find it the least experimental. Maybe I'm wrong, though, because these songs and the sound in general have been played to death. 3.5/5

Since he’s a self-proclaimed Nazi, this only gets 1 star. To briefly separate artist from the art, I’d say this album is at a 3 for me. I liked Dark Fantasy and All of the Lights, plus some of the samples and featuring artists in other songs. Kanye was probably the worst part about all of the songs and his ego and misogyny are a major turn off.

A hard one to review. Partly because he sucks so much in real-life but also because any negative reviews will probably be looked at as reviews of Kanye as a person (again, he sucks). But I can say that I have listened to this album several times before he went fully off the deep end and I have never understood the hype. And after this listen, I still don't. It isn't bad and there are things I enjoyed. But it is too long and feels lacking because of how hyped it is.

Some of it is fine but there's just so much garbage. And then there's the album itself.

I really don't like Kanye West as a person but this was a very good album.

You can't deny the production quality, the smooth seamless vocals, the excellent beats that support the message and the cutting edge lyrics. What I didn't realise is how "Trumpian" this album was. If you want to understand Trump listen to this. It isn't pro trump, it's if he was channeling trump. "I'm a monster, you knew it you wanted me anyway so stop crying". It's excellent but disturbing and while it doesn't align with my political views you can't deny it. Monster hits it on the head. A must have.

I don't know if it's because it didn't age well or that it's just my disgust for the guy that is having an impact on my appreciation of this album, but this is way more boring than what I remembered. There are some inventive beats and all, but for the most part it failed to impress me and it takes a lot of time for the album to pick up steam.

The guy's a fucking idiot, but he still could make a decent record back then.

The first 6 tracks feel like an intro for the album to finally starts at the 7th song. By chance, everything from then to the end is really good. Moody and creative beat + heartfelt delivery from Kanye. It would be a strong 4 if it wasn't of the 6 first tracks.

Not my thing really but appreciate the craft and the production quality. However, Kanye is a dick, to say the least.

Kanye West might not be a crazy lyricist or necessarily that good of a rapper, but he's a fantastic producer and absolutely knows how to make a catchy song (well, at least used to know). This album is full of extremely memorable bangers. The fact that the rapping here is not that special is compensated by this lush, maximalist production, which I absolutely love. Since hip hop is mostly focused on vocals, a lot of rap albums have very simple, rudimentary production (or at least used; I don’t really follow hip hop that closely, so I’m not entirely sure; most recent albums from the genre I’ve heard put a lot more effort into production), which is kind of boring to me. This album focuses more on the instrumentals, which I prefer. The only problem with this album is that it falls of a bit in the second half and becomes too slow and dark for my taste. It really is a shame what happened to Kanye. He used to be such an amazing artist…

Corny at times but still good. Kanye is a really, really good producer. But the lyrics are corny porn addict shit and it's kind of embarassing. There's a reason 14 year old boys love him so much. But it still sounds pretty modern 15 years later and that's impressive.

This was a good album listen and the early inception of Kanye's thought processes. I miss these early album years Kanye.

I am a bit disappointed because I really hoped I would like this. I did about half of the time. Monster and Blame Game were my least favourite. Best song on here, of course, is Runaway. It was however, fun to recognise the samples throughout the album.

Love him or hate him, the dude can turn a phrase. The problem is that the songs are covering the same ole boring hip hop stories we've all heard countless times. While I personally get no enjoyment out of hearing people drop bars, no matter how good they are at it, I do respect that he has a good ear for catchy instrumentals and song structures. I would never choose to listen to this album, but I can easily understand why those who love this genre would. So, it makes sense that this would be included. As an aside, the thing I find the funniest about him is that people seem surprised by his behaviors. Particularly recent hijinks but he always seemed to be that kind of trail mix where you never knew what you were going to get. In his early years, I think that people just kept looking past his extreme behavior because they assumed they were just calculated publicity and marketing stunts to generate awareness and interest in his music. On the other hand maybe they always were?

This has some good songs on it, but the second half is just kinda boring. And apart from the obvious hits, there wasn't much to look forward to. This definitely isn't Kanye's best.

I really thought about skipping this one but I haven't missed a day yet so I just went ahead with it. I really enjoyed the 10 or so seconds of "21st Century Schizoid Man" that was sampled at one point. The rest, well, not so much - or not at all really.

This is now the second of this style of hip-hop on this journey I've gone through. It seems to be very similar in that it's "triumphant" with some hints of soul. Reminds me of that late 2000s/early 2010 sound. It isn't for me especially how cocky Kanye is.

Kanye steps it up on this release compared to his debut. The man got beats and the package did sellll, but delivery be weaker than the US Maillll...huuuuh? At least this DB got somewhat real and is "So Appalled" with his ridiculous (dickless, dickless, dickless) lifestyle after the fortune/fame and tells women to "Runaway" cause he is a "Monster" (Top Track). Glad the skits were cut from this record and having Chris Rock cameo was a highlight. Need to be careful of artists with album titles such as this one. They are coming out of the woodworks with twisted, dark secret lives. I expect to see Mr. West on this list again amongst others (Epstein). "Who Will Survive America?" These days, I really don't know but be careful what Yeezy teaches you...2.35 stars.

Not as good as the prior Kanye entry. He's got some clever lyrics sprinkled in here and there, but otherwise MBDTF did little to keep me interested. The highlight of this album was Monster, and specifically Nicki Minaj's segment. Beyond this song nothing really stuck with me. Perhaps his schtick had mostly worn off by this point in his career? 2.04 stars

Favorite: All of the lights So far all good and then runaway starts...What's with rappers trying to sing I don't get it and 90% of the time don't like it. That's not where their skill lies. Same problems in hell of a life, I just don't like autotuned singing, I don't mind the rest of it though, it's pretty good. This album has some high highs (All of the lights, Monster, So Appalled) but some low lows too (Runaway,). I think overall I enjoyed this though.

I love the album, but don't support the artist. I knew I'd get a Kanye album and considered whether I'd listen to it. I've decided to separate the art from the artist, and I'm glad I did. The production is amazing, the writing is witty, and the features are great! Fav tracks: I loved most of the album, personal favorites are "Blame Game" and "Devil in a New Dress". The latter half of "Power" is great. 5/5

I enjoyed this album, in spite of some hilariously weird lyrics that I think only Kanye could come up with. The man certainly sees the world differently, but it works for a lot of the time.

This was the last album Kanye showed any self awareness. Battling the combination of his ego and the power that comes with fame, it clearly felt like he was on a tipping point. In retrospect, we know he lost that battle. Outstanding album. One the best produced albums I’ve ever heard.

Svårt att skilja verket från upphovspersonen. Men om jag bortser från vad Kanye hittat på de senaste åren så är det en kompetent skiva. Bombastiskt, domedagsstämning men ändå med hit-potential. Ibland blir det för mycket av allt som i All of the lights. Det är också från och med denna låt som albumet blir mindre intressant. Mer eller mindre misogyna texter. Jag vill helst avfärda det här helt och hållet, men här finns ändå något intressant i Wests begynnande galenskap.

Going into this, I didn't know how to approach reviewing a Kanye album in the present day. His political and social "extracurriculars" as of late are inexcusable and unignorable, and to me his embrace of fascist ideology and imagery casts an *awfully* dark shadow over his discography. I like quite a bit of Kanye's music, but anymore I just don't really want to hear it. That being said, I don't think "art vs artist" conversations are especially helpful, art is shaped by the good and bad of a person, and I think people need to embrace analyzing great art by bad people by confronting how the bad in a person effects the art we love. That being said, I do like this album, and I do plan on reviewing it by its own merits with regards to Kanye as an individual. Besides, my capacity for harm here is pretty limited, anyone still enthusiastically on the Kanye train at this point is pretty much conclusively too far gone, and no one willing to hold him accountable will put that notion aside because I (an individual with no meaningful platform) said that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is good. And as I said, it *is* good, granted I also think it is sorta overrated, but listening through this, there is a lot to love. The first thing to remember about My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is that it was created with the intent of being good enough and extravagant enough to win back a public that soured on Kanye after the fated Taylor Swift VMAs incident. And, considering this, I think it was really smart for Kanye to take, what I think of as a director's role here. He does appear on pretty much every song here, but to be honest, Kanye's writing and rapping leaves something to be desired at times. He has all the Kanye-isms, but that is a *very* "your mileage may vary" thing, and it hinges a lot on how invested you are in Kanye (personally I'm not *that* invested, and I can't see that really changing any time soon). This feels like the first album where he is really embracing the "asshole who is kind of relatable at the end of the day" thing, and while we have quotables here and unique flows, it isn't a schtick I really buy into. Frankly I'd rather have the Yeezus "I'm just an asshole and I think you should all hate me" thing at this point. In fact, in the presence of features, Kanye is very rarely the best verse on his own songs here. But where Kanye really succeeds on MBDTF is in curation, artistic vision, and production. He pretty much formed a camp of artists, rappers, singers and producers to orchestrate the creation of this thing. Consequently, every song has like 4 features and 15 producers and writers, but the album still very much feels like Kanye's. So in a lot of these songs, Kanye isn't necessarily a strong vocal presence, but he is still felt very strongly. It allows the listener to disconnect the album a little bit from Kanye, while still allowing him to retain all of his creative control. And the results are pretty great, this album really feels like a blockbuster, the sound is rich and maximalistic, and Kanye successfully bridges the pop and rap sound in a way that ended up extremely influential on the development of mainstream pop and rap thoughout the 2010s. We leap straight in, Dark Fantasy is rich and grand and catchy, it is an effective mission statement for the album as a whole. Shortly afterwards, we get a few really incredible "pop" Kanye tracks, POWER and All Of The Lights are pretty much unimpeachable. They are both incredibly detailed, incorporating all kinds of sounds and collaborators from Kanye's pool. POWER seems almost tailor-made to be played in Gatorade commercials, but in a way that isn't obnoxious. All of The Lights is similarly driving in a glitzier way, with big horns and *surprisingly* dense drumwork. We then get, perhaps the most iconic more pure "rap" tracks from the project in Monster and So Appalled. Both songs have incredible production, and strong verses, tons of quotables and great, distinct flows from their many *many* features. After Devil In A New Dress, we get Runaway, which I see frequently cited as the greatest achievement here. Honestly, I do think Runaway is a little overrated. It is a very interesting declaration of self awareness from Kanye, that I think he may not be capable of making at the current point in his career. However, he has some really *obnoxious* Kanye lyrics here, and the autotune solo is kind of self indulgent. On some level, I do at least sort of like every song here (or at least parts of every song), but I so have several complaints across this album. I'm not sure I'm into the vocal processing on Gorgeous, and I am not entirely sold on Devil In A New Dress. I think the verses are whatever, and it I think it's kind of overlong. Hell of A Life has a great Beat, but the lyrics are Kanye in "sex" mode and it is apparent that he just *might* have an unhealthy relationship with sex, anyways, I can see the lyrics being compelling to the right person, but again, it is awfully "your mileage may vary". The song I have the biggest problem with though is Blame Game. If only because it ends in a 2 minute, 31 second long skit that I just hate. It is too long, the implications about how Kanye views women are ugly, and I just don't think its funny. Regardless of all of this, and how I feel about Kanye and his -isms and everything, I do like this album, maybe even more than I want to. A lot of these songs are really great, and the resultant project is very strong as a coherent work, and I can appreciate that. I am officially giving this a *high* 3, it's like a 7/10. Like I said, there's a lot of good here, but realistically, there are a good few songs on here that I'm never tempted to return to, even if they're still pretty good. Besides, the real problems I do have with this album have compounded a little with the fact that I am not feeling especially generous towards Kanye for obvious reasons. But I will say, I can see the importance of this, even if I don't really get the argument that it is one of the best albums of all time.

What on earth do they say that is of any value? I mean, not everything has to be Dylan, but hell, this stuff is just filthy. Musically I was pleasantly surprised. That may sway me, but right now I can’t get over how dumb the catalyst to this was. Making a scene at an award show over a MUSIC VIDEO! For that to be his rock bottom is just plain dumb. We now know that would not be his rock bottom, but hearing about how he triumphs over making fun of Taylor Swift is hard to get past. I’m sure I’m glossing over the nuance and how he’s a complicated person etc. Still dumb. Been listening to “Power” a lot after my friend Alex mentioned the King Crimson sample. Very cool. Echo what everyone else has said, bravo you crazy bastard. Letting the T Swift thing slide because I also think she’s overrated.

"Found bravery in my bravado" - this line from the first song on this album announces what Kanye is up to, and the rest of the album backs it up. The first half is stronger than the second half, but no one was doing the kind of stuff Kanye did at the time, and not since either. The beats are all interesting in their own right, and varied from each other. Mixing the sacred (gospel music, harmonies) and profane (grinding beats, autotune, references to his dick) is a classic formula that Kanye mastered here. I don't know if he is a particularly cogent storyteller, documentarian of the human condition or even lyricist, but that's not really what he is about. He is more of an aesthetic innovator than anything - and still, he does that so well that I don't think it's too much of an exaggeration to say this album transcends its genre on its way to being damn near a masterpiece.

An all timer. This came out my sophomore year in high school and half of these songs defined a significant chunk of the soundtrack of my life for the next few years. Its a 5/5 rap album The ensemble of collaborators really pushes it to new heights. The maximalist approach is so much more pleasing to my ear than the Yeezus album was. The album art is so damn provocative. I did a deep dive on George Condo and the way he details human teeth is disturbing, but I cant keep my eyes off it My big gripe: I wonder who is responsible for what on this. Kanye gets credited with the genius but with so many collaborators (?) and producers (7), I wonder where exactly Kanye fits here.. who came up with the core ideas? Is Kanye playing George Martin here with all the strings and horns? The wiki doesn’t describe it enough 🤷‍♂️

This album aged SO WELL. Holy fuck. Got better with time. The production on this is absolutely mammoth. Favorites are Runaway (Pusha T is a gawd), Dark Fantasy, Monster (other than Jay-Z's verse - one of the worst guest verses you'll ever hear). Even Nicki Minaj is great on this album (shout out to whoever her ghostwriters were). As always with Kanye, he left some breadcrumbs of mental illness that are more obvious in retrospect (looking at you, Who Will Survive in America). But hey gotta take the bad with the good

Absolutely insane how many of these songs went on to be huge huge hits. Reminds me of listening to Californication - like, oh shit this song too? And somehow even after hearing most of these songs a ton over the years, none of them feel stale or overplayed. I’ve had POWER on lots of running playlists over the years - that song can make a fat dad feel like Prefontaine. Couple of tracks toward the end that are a little more filler, but this album might find its way into my top 10-20 of all time when it all shakes out.

Do I hate Kanye West? Yes. Do I think My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a masterpiece? Absolutely! It is one of the most impressive outings in pop rap, and songs like "Dark Fantasy" and "Runaway" are some of my favorite songs of all time. So, say what you will about how Kanye is a piece of shit, but... Actually, Idk if I can convince any naysayers that this album is amazing at this point. Oh well.

6/10 less impressive than I remember it I recognized a large number of the samples used in this album which made me doubt how much talent Kanye actually has? like any idiot can take an already good song and throw some drums and an 808 bass over it granted, I am a sucker for good wordplay and one-liners which this album offers an endless amount of, but I’m not as impressed with the production as I’d like to be :/

This is so good. Why is this so good? Why didn't I listen to this 15 years ago? I recommend finding fan uploads of this on YouTube so you don't give this Nazi royalties, but this is well worth repeated listens. This is listed as progressive rap and rap opera on Wikipedia, which makes me feel like of COURSE I would be into this. I'm so annoyed I didn't hear this back when it was new and before he alienated close friends and collaborators like John Legend. I was like 8 years late to 808s & Heartbreak and now I'm 15 years late to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which I remember being released and I remember friends being excited about it.

Heck yes. There's a lot of lot of terrible people in showbusiness but this album is great.

Well we can all agree Kanye West is a terrible human, making this one of the few albums maybe it makes sense to not listen to on official channels so he gets no money. But that being said he sure as hell knows how to write a great album, its got massive beats from start to finish with varied style and tempos keeping you hooked the whole way through and the co labs he has bring some lovely changes to the voices involved in the sound mix. If you listen to his lyrics as well you can start to see the signs of what is his decent into madness and it is hilarious to me to catch the south park fish sticks reference, that really got in his head.

Was never a huge fan of this one, and his last few years have really soured the listening experience over all. Probably would have been 2 without that.

Some of my favourite Kanye songs are on this album, but listening to them back after how much of a terrible person he's become, it's like he knew everything was fucked for him. I wish he learned from his own warning. Going to dock a point because he's a Nazi.

You can't deny Kanye is talented. Shitty human being - yes. But also makes great music. Both things can be true at once I really really enjoyed this album. Lots of huge songs on here. All Of The Lights is one of my favourite Kanye songs. Loved the interlude with the strings! I wish he'd get rid of Nicki Minaj's terrible British accent at the start though, that was dreadful 5 ⭐️

Glad I was never into Kanye before he went nuts. Don't have to deal with trying to separate the artist from their shitty opinions. Always disliked him for his big ego. Tried going into this album with an open mind, but still didn't really enjoy it. DNF. 1/5

Initially wasn't sure about this record when it came out after 808 & Heartbreak which I liked but was quite divisive too, but came to view MBDTF ultimately as a classic of the last two decades. Last great Yeezy record with amazing production and a who's who of collaborators, and a far cry from his projects now which are not just weaker but beyond the pale and borderline unlistenable.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by this album . In fact I was actually expecting a far more mid reaction to it which is my usual Kanye ratings. I do like some of the stuff but as a whole I'm not a fan, even when he wasn't controversial. First thing I think this album starts off and ends absolutely spectacularly "Dark Fantasy" and "Lost in the World"/"Who Will Survive in America", are above and beyond what I expected. I also really enjoyed the first four tracks on the album up to "All the Lights". This album to me works really well when it's pretty much crossing over the hip hop and pop landscapes. Starting with "Monster" through "Devil In A New Dress", along with "Hell of A Life" however it kind of gets into the typical rap that I'm not really drawn to, though I did like the guitar work on "Devil". "Runaway" I also enjoyed quite a bit, especially the last four minutes goes into musical textures I honestly think is brilliant. If it wasn't for the stretch of songs, which if I were more into rap in general I'd probably dig it, I could see myself going much higher. (8.4) ★★★★

Before he turned into an insane person, Kanye West was one of the more innovative hip-hop artists of the 21st century, and this album is really his magnum opus. The production is masterful. There's a super weird collection of artist features including Jay-Z, Raekwon, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Justin Vernon, Drake and Elton F**king John. And there's just a ton of great songs here -- "POWER", "All of the Lights", "Monster", "Devil in a New Dress", and "Runaway", which is still one of the best songs of the 21st century. If I had a minor complaint, it's that the album is a bit long, and it would've been killer to just have "Runaway" be the closing track. Still, it's a fantastic album and one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. 5 stars.

Nice rare blockbuster album effort for the 2010s. Kanye is at the top of his tormented braggadocio game here and there are loads of great features and samples throughout. King Crimsony-assisted Power and Runaway are the runaway standout productions but All Of The Lights and Aphex Twin derivative Blame Game are also brilliant tracks.

I was always fascinated how “above average” producer and rapper hypnotized so many people to believe he’s genius, and his albums is “monumental”, experimental, etc. And I was like that after 2010, when it wasn’t cool. I saw how in 00s he was just a pop-star and interesting producer, but loved his stupid stunts. Couple of years before him was echoes of 90s, “attitude” era, every year was some crazy celeb, so he was one of them, sometimes cute, sometimes don’t. And his “I’m a genius, I’m glitch, I’m god” was hilarious. But he entertained with his music. No one thinking about him seriously, just pop-music-making-man-with-Ego. I remember how Graduation was Great pop album, I liked it even as an album. 808 was ok, his “experimantation” wasn’t something huge, you’ve got soooo many artist who did that more dramatically, even Outkast was doing bigger moves years before him. And 808 was very “not finished”, a lot of space, very minimalistic, but not in artsy way. And most of the people thought so. But years after everyone thinks it was “Pet Sounds” of 21st century, it was revolution or something. No, it wasn’t. It was interesting, that’s all. But… ok, people were intrigued what can he do next. And MBDTF was interesting indeed. It was full of ideas, great moments, and first half reaaaly close to be something great. But… it wasn’t. It had long outros, that were very tedious. It had interlude, that there just to show of, doesn’t have any weight. Song structures were “not as stupidly simple as you expect” but that doesn’t mean that they have reasons to be that way. Start of the album is interesting, it gets you into energy aaaand… stops it with ending that so unfinished, so uninteresting. And when Gorgeous starts you think “Why you just didn’t skip to the next track? Make some transition, save energy, kick with a bang!” But yeah, he didn’t. And Gorgeous is starting it again, you think, oh, the end must be bonkers but… it crushed flow again. And Power is another example where you can glue this in one piece, THAT would be great opening sequence ona GREAT album. But here… it’s good, but it was made by someone immature and surrounded by “yes-men” too much. And after that everytime it’s is the same: he doesn’t know how to make interesting, throat grabbing progession of ideas. He was touring with U2 before that, he was mesmerized with rock-energy, he make his ressearch and he doesn’t understood correctly. He wanted to mimic, he made some stuff like “they do”, but didn’t quite catch why? After Monster, which maybe the only song that works fully, it’s downhill. Every track has something great, but it’s just not enough work, to make it brilliant, so much shit that makes this journey through the album such a chore. Yeah, every hophead who was a kid at 2010 would forever see this as it’s “Sgt. Pepper” or what ever, but whithout these goggles — it’s just a wasted potential of a great album. He can’t cut things, cause he’s a narcisisst, he “loves” himself too much, so his works always bloated, always undocused, too much of a “tell, don’t show” attitude. He’s a genius in only one way — great overproducer, which works feels very underproduced. His production need another producer, who can make a brilliant album from it. 3+/5 Graduation >>> MBDTF

Anyone born in the past 15 to 20 years probably only knows Kanye West as a right-wing conspiracy theorist and cultural pariah. But from 2005 to 2011, he wasn’t just a rapper. He was a force. And My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is him at the absolute peak of his powers. This album is loud, dramatic, beautiful, and deeply chaotic. It’s part therapy session, part flex, and part art project. The list of guest features is stacked—Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver, Kid Cudi, Rihanna—and every one of them brings something solid. Even Chris Rock shows up. And somehow, in the middle of all that star power, Kanye still manages to be the gravitational center. It’s wild that this was his comeback album after the Taylor Swift fallout. Most artists would’ve laid low. Kanye dropped one of the best albums of the decade. Favorite song: Runaway

Putting aside the person Kanye has become, this is a great rap album. Not exactly sure how much I'll go back to it, but there's a couple of tracks (Power, for example) that I can't help but put on sometimes.

For one reason or another, hip-hop has never been my genre, and for some very specific reasons Kanye feels hard to get into in 2025. Still, listening to MBDTF it's clear what everybody sees in him & his music

Totally unknown to me... Certainly topping the hiphop-albums so far. There considerably more music here. I kinda like 'So appalling' and 'Who will survive in America'. I really don't understand why they open the album with the appalling - pun intended - 'Dark fantasy'. Why, tell me why? Interesting thought: how many of the people responsible for over 1 billion Spotify-streams of 'POWER' have listened to the original '21st century schizoid man' (with 37 million streams)?

Track 1: Wasn't all _that_ offensive. Maybe I even give this a 2 Track 2: This is incredibly grating. Track 3: Somewhat offended by the 21 CSM sample. I've got a lot of love for this album, as many do. I haven't listened to it in a couple of years so it was a pleasure to return to it. The track list is incredibly solid. Witty, arrogant, emotional, angry, each track explores varying aspects of Kanye's psyche, extrapolating them to their limits. Greed on Monster Self awareness and vulnerability on Runaway Lust on Devil In A New Dress etc etc Even without the context surrounding Kanye at the time of this albums release, the songs still hold up as time goes on. The only thing i don't enjoy about this album is the annoying outro on Blame Game by Chris Rock, it's a bit much. Other than that, an incredible album, shame about his disgraced legacy Fav tracks - All except the end of blame game

Booooo Nazis.

I know a lot of King Crimson fans were NOT happy with "POWER", but I thought it was a good way to let people know of the band's influence. For the most part, I think this album was probably Kanye's pinnacle. He has a lot of great guest stars, uses some good riffs and samples, and the production is masterful. I could have done without "Blame Game" and the Chris Rock bit (don't get me wrong, I think Chris Rock is hilarious. It just seemed to not fit in the song for me.). Am I going to listen to this album again? Probably not, just because... you know, Kanye. But I will not deny that it is a good album, and probably his best work. Top tracks: "POWER," "All of the Lights," "Monster," "So Appalled," "Lost in the World," "Who Will Survive In America"

So was this when Kanye fully came out as an ahole? He sure doesn't shy away from the fact that he can be a real ahole - embracing his bad boy role (with some help from Jay-Z and the Dark Knight to make the point). The sexual violence and depravity is a bit much at times though. The start of the album is really well orchestrated, some beautiful melodies and sampling along with some sublime rapping and lyrics. For those reasons, Dark Fantasy might be favorite of all the songs, with Power a close second. Gorgeous and All of the Lights are also really good (great vocals from Rhianna on the latter). I didn't totally love Monster - all the beats and featured vocals didn't come together quite right. From there I was less into the album, it's like he took his foot of the orchestration gas and just through more straight ahead stuff at us, but the layers and complexity in the first few songs was what made this album so good. Runaway and Blame Game were two exceptions - simple piano notes and a subtle drum track in each, with soft vocal styles from Pusha T or John Legend that perfectly complement Kanye's rapping. Lost in the World had potential but was auto-tuned to hell (sorry Bon Iver). Who Will Survive in America was a cool ending. Apt title for this album - Kanye arranges some beautiful songs but the lyrics (despite being very clever) are real dark and twisted. If he hadn't lost his way in the middle of the album I'd probably rate this even higher.

It's time again for everyone's favorite game: Separate the art from the piece of shit artist! This an outstanding album from a horrible person. It even helps get under the veneer of his horrible personality, but unfortunately it wasn't redemption - he only doubles down (and then some) over the ensuing years. Still, let's review only the music. Mostly excellent. I'd basically call Dark Fantasy through Monster a nearly perfect stretch (Gorgeous goes a little long, but the lyrics are powerful). First of all, Ye is a prog fan? Mike Oldfield and Jon Anderson on Dark Fantasy? Power based on 21st Century Schizoid Man? I enjoyed watching a video of Greg Lake starting a concert with Power and segueing to him singing and playing 21st CSM. Power was the first song to really hit me - very powerful (pun not quite intended?). All of the Lights was a super-catchy track and Rihanna sounds great. Monster was a fun, cool track and Nicki Minaj's section made me laugh. The rest of the album has a lot of good moments, but the lyrics got to be a little too much (Devil in a New Dress, settle down Kanye, plus the end of Hell of a Life. Ugh). Blame Game was crude as hell (although Chris Rock is never not funny). Lost in the World was catchy, but I HATE AUTOTUNE. Who Will Survive in America was a powerful closer with some disturbing imagery (all from Gil Scott-Heron's spoken word poem Comment #1 from 1970). I recognize that in the world of rap albums, this should be a clear 5. However, I was less of a fan of the second half (except perhaps Runaway, but it went a little too long), hate autotune, and feel I can't give Kanye a 5 since he's such a piece of shit. Guess I can't fully separate the art from the artist. Favorite tracks: Power, All of the Lights, Monster.

It's uncomfortable to listen to Kanye nowadays. Kanye's voice is generally the worst part of each of his songs, and knowing how drug abuse can exacerbate mental health issues, those lyrics are more disturbing than enjoyable. Same goes for lyrics about violence against women. Power and All of the Lights are undeniable hits.

A rap album which belongs in the Louvre. Kayne at his best and most self aware. Shout-out to Mike Dean for the production on many of the tracks. Total shame given his recent antics. You could make a case for separating the art from the artist, but Kanye puts so much of himself in his work (especially in this album) that you can't really do that. I think it's better instead to understand the context of his life at this point I'm time. Wouldnt be surprised if there have been papers written on this.

I now understand why this record is as popular as it is. The songs flow nicely between each other, lyrics and features are well produced and worked on. The songs are listenable by anyone, with a few exceptions because of the lyrics. It is not my taste and probably won't look for it in the near or far future, but it has appeal, songs are okay and it is not a bad record.

There’s some good and some meh on this album, but there’s no denying that a few of these tracks are going to stick around for a long time. Even with how off-the-rails Kanye has become, this album is just a good piece of work. Like with many artists, sometimes you have to separate the person from the music, and I say that as someone who FUCKING HATES Kanye. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy ‘You took your pussy game up a-whole-nother level, this is some Cirque du Soleil pussy now’ Kanye being a dickhead aside, having liked The College Dropout and knowing this is regarded as his best album I was interested to hear this one. But I thought it was a bit of a mess. He’s of course not the greatest MC, but it worked on The College Dropout when there was a sense of humour and fun to the lyrics and a sense of a viewpoint, whereas this is either lazily misogynistic or ludicrously self referential and self indulgent. I don’t really like the production either - although TCD did feel of it’s time, the lush, soul sample heavy sound worked well. Whereas on this, despite some nice grooves here and there, Dark Fantasy’s verses, I didn’t really like the layered voices and self important gospel overtones, and the nature of many of the hooks - despite some being catchy I found a lot of them a bit annoying, particularly POWER and Lost in the World. And Blame Game is a really bad song. Maybe it’s that you can see some warning signs of the narcissistic fascism that he slid into that affected my opinions, but I didn’t think this was much cop, and I can’t imagine listening again really, so it’s a 2. 🤡🤡 Playlist submission: Monster

I've tended to avoid Kanye on account of the nuttiness and all that. But I enjoyed College Dropout, and I enjoyed this (to an extent). So shoot me. 'Dark Fantasy' and 'Gorgeous' are anthemic opening tracks. 'POWER' and Runaways yet more cinematic brilliance, rivalling anything he'd done hitherto. It has more than enough patchy moments, 'Monster' being one of the most unintentionally terrible things I've heard in a fair while.Thats until 'Blame Game' cones us which is one if the most pointlessly overlong songs I've ever heard. You can absolutely tell this album is by someone not quite right in the head. Bonkers lyrics. Lyrics that are as eccentric as they are cringeworthy. Trying to get a cast of thousands on the album, that all fail. And aiming for a symphonic, overblown sound, the sound of ego. Still, he hits gold a few times.

I wasn't expecting to like this. I also wasn't expecting all the songs to be so long.

A lot of pleasant songs

1. Dark Fantasy - 8 Great opening track. This is classic Kayne. Solid flow, all sorts of cultural references sprinkled throughout. Intro is a little too long for my liking but this just a great rap track. The choir coming in and out of the track is really really good. Bridge is a little weak but the beat overall is amazing. 2. Gorgeous (feat. Kid Cudi & Raekwon) - 7 Another good track. The guests on the track work so well in between Kayne's deep raps and they generally compliment him so well. The interesting thing about the track is the guitar and bass, which lead the beat over traditional snares or drums like in most traditional rap. Track feels filled with Kayne's hateful rage, which compliments the dirty sounds of the guitar he has on the track. 3. Power - 10 Best track on the album and probably one of the best tracks Kayne ever made. Drumline is immense on this track. Background vocals lift the track. Lyrically this track is unbelievably strong, drifting between societal problems and Kayne's own struggle to create this very track. It's just an absolutely epic song. 4. All the Lights (Interlude) - N/A Bridge track. Not meant to be rated. 5. All the Lights - 8 Solid track. Instrumentals aren't balanced and a bit overpowering on the track which drowns out of the vocals at times but it's still a good song. Opening verse is the biggest part of the song. 6. Monster (feat. JAY-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj & Bon Iver) - 4 The beat on this track is great but it's lyrically very bad. The opening 2 minutes is lyrically some of the worst on the album. Chorus is absolutely dreadful as well. JayZ's verse starts out poorly but ends well. Nicki Minaj's verse is absolutely awful. 7. So Appalled (feat. Kanye West, JAY-Z, Pusha T & Prynce Cy Hi) - 7 Much better track. Lyrically the flow is so much better and the lyrics themselves are so much stronger. Beat is great and this is more a return to what this album has built itself as than the previous track. Last minute is the weakest part of the track. 8. Devil in a New Dress (feat. Rick Ross) - 9 Awesome track. Lyrically it's absolutely amazing. When Kayne is describing the devil in the new dress he fades between rap, signing a line like a gospel song, and then another like it's casual conversation. The imagery the song paints is crystal clear. Instrumentally it's great and the guest verse this time is just as strong as Kayne's at the start of the song. All around excellent. 9. Runaway (feat. Pusha T) - 7 The opening verse is the worst part about this song but the whole second half of the track lyrically is very enjoyable. Instrumentally it lasts too long at the end. Pusha T's vocal are a great compliment to the track. 10. Hell of a Life - 6 The use of auto-tune here is awful. Absolutely kills the choruses but the verse still contains that same flow we've come to love from a Kayne track. Beat and instrumentals are very good. 11. Blame Game (feat. John Legend) - 6 John Legend's vocals really carry the song. Kanye's verses are pretty solid as well. Instrumentally it's pretty sound. The song gets overly repetitive at times after the choruses but overall it's a pleasant listen. The monologue goes on for way way too long at the end. 12. Lost in the World (feat. Bon Iver) - 7 Decent song. Instrumentally and lyrically it's good but it comes to a crescendo around 3 minutes in that's just too many sounds. Track tends to drown itself out because of it. Overall though, a better song than Blame Game with a seamless transition into the final track. 13. Who Will Survive In America - 6 Decent song with a preacher painting metamorphic images with his monologue. The song is short and it's a solid conclusion to an otherwise decent album. Not terribly too much to dissect as the track is only 99 seconds long but overall it's a good way to end the album. Average Rating: 7.2 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 3.6 Rounded Up: 4 stars

Ah, dammit. My favorite Kanye West album, and in my opinion his last good one. The places this album goes, musically, thematically, and lyrically is a beautiful journey. This has a case for being one of the greatest hip hop albums ever. It almost makes me cry listening to this again, knowing how much of a piece of garbage that Ye goes on to become. And for that, I'm not gonna listen to it today.

A polarizing figure, but you must admit this album is a masterpiece.

[FYI if you still want to listen to the album but not support the artist, just find a random YouTube upload of it like I did] I hesitated to listen to this because the last few years Kanye has fallen off the deep end. I found issues supporting someone who has horrid views that I am so against. However, my curiosity eventually won. After all, I am on this website to discover new music. And if the artist has to be separated from the art, then so be it. To be clear, I've heard possibly a quarter(ish) of this album before, for several years it had a lot of radio and commercial play. I also, am aware of other Kanye hits that I do enjoy, but I cant say I've listened to any of his work in full. All this to say, I am familiar with his work and have not been disappointed (again, with his WORK. him as a person is another story.) After listening to this album, I think I understand now. It was enjoyable, it was funny, it was daring. Laced with amazing features that brought the album from a 10 to 11. I get why so many people are hesitant to let Kanye go. He makes good music whether its his own or if its produced for someone else.

Alright, you know the drill by now. Fuck Kanye and everything that he's become, but this album is genuinely fantastic. This, of course, is Kanye West's legendary 2010 album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. This is one of those albums that just feels like a big deal. Of course, it was a big deal when it released. This was Kanye's first release after the whole VMAs fiasco, so all eyes were on him to see what kind of thing he makes. What did he end up putting out? Well, let's put it this way. This is an album all about fame and the life of a celebrity. This album reportedly cost over $3 million dollars to make. This album should seem incredibly out-of-touch and over-the-top and even embarrassing. And yet, despite all of that, this album has managed to strike a chord in millions of listeners and is one of the most acclaimed hip-hop albums of all time. This album shouldn't work, but it does. MBDTF is a lot of things, many of which I have just acknowledged. But I think the most important thing that it is (for the sake of this review) is really really good. Yeah, the album's good. I think I get why people were so mad when Fantano gave it a 6. To be fair, I don't know if I'd give it a 10/10, but it's closer than I'd like to admit. Let's praise the album, shall we? The production is just insane and I love it. That's the thing that's really connected the three Kanye albums I've listened to so far in terms of quality for me. Whether it's The College Dropout's chipmunk-soul vibes to the sheer maximalist excess of MBDTF to whatever the fuck was going on in Yeezus, there's something that's undeniably cool about Kanye's production. And the samples? Name any other album that samples Aphex Twin, Smokey Robinson, and King Crimson, I dare you. Good stuff. The writing is pretty complex. Is it accurate to call this a concept album? I think so. The album really likes to tackle the subject of fame. As stated earlier, this is the kind of thing that could go really poorly but ends up working really well to create an interesting vibe for the album. It's just introspective enough to feel like a person made it yet also arrogant enough to remind you that this is Kanye we're talking about. The album sees him diving a bit into his issues back when the biggest things he had to worry about were liking sex too much and not liking Hitler too much. It also helps that there aren't too many lines on here that are super questionable like there were on Yeezus. The themes are explored in interesting ways and you get insight into a pretty interesting character. The rapping is solid all throughout. Kanye's flow is good, as is that of all of the features on this album. The features make this album for me. There is not a bad one in the bunch. The songs as a whole? Great. There really isn't a bad one in the bunch. You know me. I love me some long-ass songs, so it's no surprise that I love "Runaway." The piano, the unique chorus, Pusha T. Everything about it works. "POWER" is super cool too. Again. This song samples King motherfucking Crimson. Of course I love it. Even the less-popular songs are good. The fact that "So Appalled" is one of the least-popular songs on the album goes to show how good this thing is. I hate to say it, but Kanye West was super talented at one point. I must reiterate once again that I hate Kanye as a person. He sucks. But his music? It may not be good now, but to say that he never deserved fame in the first place would just be ignorant of how good albums like MBDTF are. I do think I slightly prefer The College Dropout, but My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy deserves the praise it's gotten over the past 15 years. It's great. 5/5.

As someone who doesn't care a lot about hip-hop pretty much all I know about this guy is that he either is an actual fucking nazi, or thinks it's cool to adopt a nazi image for shock value, but also makes the best music in the genre by miles and people generally hate to love him. After listening to this album, I sort of get it? This is fantastically produced and sure might be as good as hip-hop gets, and if I enjoyed this sort of thing more it'd have to be an easy 5. But alas, it still just isn't my cup of tea, so I don't even have to worry about separating the art from the artist when I give this idiot a low score.

Overall: 8/10 Honestly, I don't really feel like listening to Kanye lately. I used to adore this man's music and now he just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I still listened to it, and I still added songs to my playlist, but man. I just don't like nazis. It's sad too because he was so talented and this album is soooooo great. Alright I knew it was coming, I’ve never listened to it, here we go. First song is pretty good, gorgeous is atrocious. Power has a good chorus, the rest of the song is so boring. All of the lights interlude is really swell, loved that, but all of the lights the real song? Another good chorus ruined by the rest of the song, what the hell is that drum throughout the whole thing? Monster continues the trend of just a horrible song. So bad. You ever had sex with a pharaoh???? Only enjoyable part of so appalled was that I realized Kendrick interpolates it on Hiiipower, a far superior song. Devil was a great instrumental but a boring song. Don’t get me started on Runaway, if I ever have to hear one of my students play an E on a piano ever again I’m quitting. Hell of a life interpolates iron man? And then what is this butchering of Avril 14???? Blame game is the worst song on here I did not need to hear one of my favorite songs of all time with Kanye talking about choking a woman and then Chris Rock talking about new parts of the pussy over it. This Bon Iver track is really good though. Who will survive in America kinda caps it off nicely. I cannot fathom why most people think this is a 10/10 masterpiece of an album. Forget Kanye being a Nazi, that’s its own shit but this album made me so angry. People have been yelling at Fantano for years over giving this album a 6/10, that’s like 2 too high. I’m glad it inspired a generation or whatever, it sounds like shit on first listen in 2025. How is this my brothers favorite album. I don’t find myself looking to listen to Kanye, but every time I do, I’m always entertained. Mostly by the production. This album in particular has so many hits and was so impactful. I think it’s hard not to agree that this isn’t a top 1001 album. Pretty decent 5 from me, but I probably still won’t go searching to listen to songs off of it.

2 things: I’m not a nazi and this is still a masterpiece in a string of masterpieces that Kanye had going for like a decade straight. Production is so good and over the top, the lyrics are also very good. Kanye was firing at 11 on this one and his features are soo good. Straight up, the first 9 songs of this album are just short of perfect. Everything up to and including Runaway is the strongest stuff Kanye ever made. "Hell of a Life" and "Blame Game" are as weak as every Kanye song where he's mad about women are, and "Lost In the World" is better but not too special. My word though, the first 9 are incredible.

Favorites: Gorgeous, Devil in a New Dress, Runaway This album would be perfect if it cut So Appalled, Hell Of A Life, and Blame Game. They make the entire record feel more bloated and mediocre than it actually should be. Otherwise, this is some damn good production and a record that houses some of my favorite rap songs of all time.

OK, so no one should listen to Kanye because he's a garbage human being. Having said that, this one's pretty great. Some of his best songs are on here, though as a whole I've never loved it as much as most people do. Plus, I hate that stupid Chris Rock bit. It's a big aside but putting his MAGA, racist, misogynist, crazy, anti-Taylor actions aside I still don't get what it is that people like about his "music." Now that I'm schooled in Kendrick Lamar, The Fugees, and The Pharcycle I know what good rap should sound like. I would feel bad because he's so clearly struggling with mental health issues but I don't because he is fundamentally dark and twisted. He even told us that 15 years ago.

To begin with, the beats are okay and the production is fine which makes for a slick, slick mediocre record that for some reason is very popular and sold millions. The reality of this dark twisted fantasy is Kanye West is the most overrated and (self) hyped artist, probably ever. I'm not an expert in hip hop or rap, but to my ears there is nothing special, beautiful or earth-shattering about this album. I would have given this maybe a 3 or 2 if it was any artist other than West, but I could try to be somewhat objective and ignore the shitty human being he is...nope, sorry I can't.

3 - I think it's fine. Some good songs, but I just have never understood the 'genius' that everyone raved about. It feels so arrogant and self absorbed, but maybe I just can't separate who he is from his music.

Some of Kanye's best sampling work on here - 21st Century Schizoid Man, Avril 14th. It makes sense to me that many people see this as Kanye's best album, it definitely ticks the most boxes, its very well rounded. You still have the chop-up-the-soul Kanye on Dark Fantasy; you've got bangers that foreshadow Yeezus like Monster; then you've got epics like Power and Runaway. To pick flaws, the tracks in general are very long. I think Runaway is great but it struggles to justify a 9 minute run time. Same for Blame Game - the Aphex Twin loop is beautiful but 7 and a half minutes of it is too much. I don't much like So Apalled and Hell of a Life is just ok for me. But other than that there's a lot of great music here. Fave Tracks: Power, All of the Lights, Monster, Runaway, Blame Game, Lost in the World/Who Will Survive in America 4.6/5

what to do with this one in the year 2025, huh. in my past, i was a mild kanye fan and i think he can be brilliant. lately i want absolutely nothing to do with him, and if you're paying anywhere close to attention, you'll understand why. but when this album came out, i liked it. not as much as everyone else seemed to, as this is always in contention for "greatest album of all time." i've never been quite there. there is some good stuff on here but i am more of a fan of his earlier production and songs. there are definitely some high points here for me ('power,' 'all of the lights,' and 'runaway') but a lot of the album cuts don't do a whole lot for me. his rapping is generally pretty great on here. the jay-z verse on 'monster' is genuinely terrible. did we really have to listen to several minutes of chris rock talking about reupholstering pussies? i haven't listened to this album in well over a decade because i liked his earlier stuff better in general, so upon relistening, i'm still sort of in the same place. musically, this was never a 5/5 for me, and for the express purposes of this project, i try to remove the art from the artist, even though who he is currently is pretty deplorable.

Great album that's a modern classic

This album is the musical equivalent of a gilded trash fire. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sounds like what would happen if someone handed a malfunctioning ego a billion-dollar budget and told it to paint its feelings in JPEGs. It’s overproduced, overwrought, and undercooked — a monument to indulgence where actual musical ideas go to get buried beneath walls of noise, guest verses pretending to be profound, and vocal takes so bloated with self-importance they may as well arrive via gold-plated parachute. “Runaway” is nine minutes long and somehow manages to say nothing except “I’m awful, but make it art.” “Blame Game” turns into a voicemail. “Power” is catchy in the way migraine auras are visually interesting. The production is technically impressive, sure, but so is a fireworks display at a landfill — doesn’t mean you want to sit through it. Everything here is trying to be cinematic and mythic, but it ends up sounding like an expensive identity crisis broadcast through a distortion pedal. It’s an exhausting slog of operatic narcissism, where every good idea is smothered by five worse ones. The features are dragged into the quicksand one by one, forced to shout platitudes into the void. By the end, it feels less like an album and more like a cry for help from someone who thinks help is beneath him. A bombastic, baffling, and utterly joyless monument to a man who thinks he's a misunderstood genius, when really he just needed someone to say "no."

A classic album from one of my favorite Hip-Hop/Rap artists. I would say 90% of this album is no-skips for me, it is that good. Kanye's sound is satisfying to me because it combines my favorite things: playful and real lyricism, inventive and colorful beats + samples, and a perfectly curated feel for each song. My least favorite songs are 'Blame Game' and 'Hell of a Life'; I would happily listen to everything else.

No One Man Should Have All That Power 1001 Albums Generator 43 (06/02/2025) The circumstances surrounding the creation of Kanye West's fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, are almost as legendary as the album itself. After his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs, Kanye decided to hole up in Hawaii and make the ultimate comeback album. The 2009 VMAs were, shall we say, a free trial of the kind of celebrity that Kanye West would turn out to be: a man that, for better or worse, would refuse at every turn to do what others pressured him to do, and would instead do what he felt was right, regardless of the mental health state he was in that led him to those actions. In recent years, we have seen this unwavering rebelliousness taken to its logical conclusion, and I don't think many of us like where it has led. But in 2010, the worst thing Kanye was doing was saying George Bush doesn't care about black people on live TV and interrupting Taylor Swift at an event none of us would ever be invited to. Just to get my bias out of the way, Kanye is my most scrobbled artist and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is my third most scrobbled album of all time on last.fm, and every other album in the top 5 has over 20 tracks. I love this album. It is my favorite Kanye album and one of my favorite albums of all time. It is a maximalist expression of genius and every aspect of it is done expertly and with unbelievable precision. The album opens with Nicki Minaj reading a play on Cinderella before we get the first of many iconic choruses on this album, sung by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame and Teyana Taylor. This is the perfect introduction to this album and features some of Kanye's best rapping ever. Gorgeous features a great guitar sample and Kid Cudi and Raekwon both provide incredible verses. POWER is the first super-duper hit on the album and it deserves it. The most famous part of this song may be the King Crimson sample, but every aspect of this song is amazing. Kanye famously claimed that this song took 5000 hours to complete, which may be an exaggeration, but if any song would take 5000 hours, it would be this one. In the last verse, Kanye ends with the line "so exciting" which echoes and begins to sound like "suicide" before singing in the outro about jumping out of a window. Maybe there is more darkness here than the bravado would lead us to believe. The other massive superhit on this album, amazingly, is the 9 minute Runaway, which features no beat switchups and instead has West humming wordless, distorted vocals for the second half after verses from him and Pusha T about being manipulative assholes. So much has been speculated about the meaning of this outro, but my favorite interpretation is that our lack of understanding the words through the fog of the distortion is precisely the point. Perhaps this is how Kanye felt his public statements were being perceived (of course looking back at this in 2025, some of his public statements seem pretty difficult to misinterpret). All Of The Lights is a song that I can't help but stare at in awe every time I hear it, even though musically it is probably on the lower half of this album for me. Gathering Elton John, Rhianna, Drake, Alicia Keys, Kid Cudi, Fergie, and more into a single track and actually making it work cohesively is such an impressive feat. I need to briefly mention a personal favorite of mine, Devil In A New Dress, which has an amazing guitar solo and the best verse of Rick Ross' career at the end. The structure of this track is really great. It feels weird to call any song on this album underrated, but I think So Appalled and Lost In The World are the closest it gets. I always felt like including So Appalled right after Monster was a bit strange since these are the two posse cuts on the album, and this seems to have led people to underrate So Appalled, when really I think these are similar quality. So Appalled may not have any verses as good as Nicki on Monster, but it also doesn't have any verses as bad as Jay Z on Monster, which is the worst verse on this album. Lost In The World was my favorite Kanye song for a long time. I still think it may hold the place as my favorite production by him and depending on the day, it could be his best song. It's a complete journey, opening with relatively strained vocals from Justin Vernon before slowly opening up with more vocal harmonies and a bigger choir. When the beat really kicks in, it is electric and Kanye's verse, which was originally a letter to Kim Kardashian, is quite beautiful. In the end of the song, more tribal drums get incorporated as a Gil-Scott Heron sample plays, which leads into the outro track. The only kind of weak song is Blame Game, with Chris Rock doing a mediocre sketch comedy bit at the end (although "Yeezy reupholstered my pussy" is really funny in fairness). The beat is good with its Aphex Twin sample, but the song as a whole is never my favorite to listen to all the way through. MBDTF is an album that is hard for me to describe. It isn't my favorite album ever, but it's up there. It's an album that gave me a new appreciation for hip hop, which is one of my favorite genres now.
