An important album at an important time for UK music. I can imagine if you aren’t from the UK and/or late 80’s/early 90’s wasn’t your thing then you might not like or understand the album. Or you probably like Velvet Underground 🤮
I heard a lot good things about this album and I’ve been left really disappointed. For me the album gets better towards the end but no track stands out a classic. I don’t like jazz so those jazz infused tracks were not nice. A generous 3 stars.
FUNKY FUNK!
I feel like I’m listening to them live and they are warming up, in particular the lead singer. I don’t like his voice. They should re-record the album with a different singer.
Nice voice but I can’t stomach 3.5 hrs of this. I got halfway and skipped through the rest. It reminds me of cartoons and being off school and mum has the radio on.
So good. A couple of weak tracks but the good tracks are so so good. An album that has inspired numerous other musicians. Samples used by Nas, SWV, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, The Prodigy, Kanye West, 2Pac….
It’s not 3 stars but it’s also not 4 stars. I don’t like the limitation of 5 stars and no halves! It was good, funky but nothing amazing.

Lower class wizard rock. Mostly unpleasant sounds.
I’m listening to this on January 7th and I don’t care. I like Christmas songs and these are some of the best. In the lead up to Christmas put this album on instead of Mariah/Arianna etc.
Dylan is marmite. How can I focus on the lyrics when the voice makes me angry and bored?
Slowly realising I don't like prog rock. This is almost drivel. I want to get all the people who rate this album highly in to a room and just question them on various aspects of life.
"I feel music should make you happy, make you relaxed, pump you up, make you think, make you inspired. I feel music shouldn't make you feel anxious, on edge and angry, which is what this album did to me. Ross from Friends on keyboards with a guy off the street singing over it. The good thing about listening to 1001 albums is that there are the odd person/group that I have never ever heard of. There's a good reason I haven't heard of Robert Wyatt or Rock Bottom, the album is horrendous. I read more about him and his history and ending up in a wheelchair is not an excuse for releasing crap music. The equivalent of a monkey throwing faeces at a canvas and calling it art. "
The first track which is 15 minutes long, is like a group of chimps have found instruments and they each stumble across different notes which kind of resemble music but none of it goes together. The album does pick up slightly in the middle but then deteoriates. A real tough listen overall.
I don't like jazz. So the jazz parts were unpleasant but the funk parts were pretty decent.
Everyone likes Abba but not everyone can admit it.
Well this is a weird one. This band/album completely passed me by, despite being released at a time when I was deep in to all sorts of music. As soon as it started I feared the worst but I was pleasantly surprised. It's such an easy, basic minded, probably American viewpoint to compare them negatively to Oasis. Good songwriting, good variety of sounds.
You're not extra cool if you like jazz. Just stop it.
People not giving this album 5 stars are American and/or deaf.
I don’t like gin and tonic. Mainly because I don’t like the taste of gin and don’t like the taste of tonic. Friends will always ask me to try theirs as apparently “it’s the best one yet”. It never is. This is how I feel about Jazz. This album was at the lower end of Jazz. Really hurt to listen to. Like my 6 year old daughter had found an instrument and attempted to play it.
Pretty unpleasant but not the worst I've heard so far.
2 Steely Dan albums in 5 days. Who do I complain to?
Yes she can sing but it's not appealing, just warbling sounds. Jazz in the background making me want to rip my ears off. The last track made me so angry.
Jazz is just bad and this is the worst of jazz.
I've never been a huge fan of Kanye, like a unpredictable toddler that sometimes shows promise. He's good but not amazing and the same goes for this album. Also modern day albums always seem to go on longer, sometimes twice as long. Is this because of ego or do the artists just have a lot of mid rated songs and they can't decide what to put on the album.
I had never listened to this before despite being well aware of The Sabres of Paradise. Great ambient sounds. An album for afters afters.
Probably the first album that has really surprised me. My genre of choice is 90's Electronica/Indie and always been wary of country/country & western. I was deflated when I saw it was going to be 2 hours of country music but I was proved very wrong. It was a foot tapper, head nodder, thought provoking album. Yes, it's probably too long and some songs don't quite hit the spot which marks the album down a touch. Would I listen to all the album again, probably not but definitely will add my favourites to my spotify list.
This is very close to a 1 star. The 2nd half of this album saves it slightly. Don’t get me wrong, this album is absolutely horrific. Music should not make you angry but that’s the affect his nasal warbling and harmonica does to me.
I had this on in the background whilst doing jobs around the house. It annoyed me. I don't like jazz and trumpet sounds just grate on me. My young daughter asked me what on earth I was listening to! I came to rate it 2 stars and then saw how highly rated the album was so thought I should give it another listen. I wish I hadn't. Still 2 stars.
Thankfully a short album. At times it was ok but most of the time all I could think of was Joey Tribbiani trying to speak French.
Polyrhythm and polytonal sounds are not for me. I'm content with being in a place of not understanding why some people think this album is the best thing they've heard.
If you don't like electronica, especially mid 90's electronica, you are voting this a 1 or 2. If you do like electronica, you are probably voting this 4 or 5. I feel so lucky to have artists like Orbital, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy all coming on the scene when I was a teenager in the early 90's. Music, raving, after hours chill out......halcyon days.
I got The Cure and The Cult mixed up so was expecting emo and took me 3 tracks to realise The Cure hadn't created a hard rock album. Maybe it's because I've had 3 weeks of below average albums but I quite enjoyed this album. A foot tapper.
Apparently this is the lowest rated by others album. I understand why as it's mainly just noise but I didn't think it was that bad. I'm only 378 albums in but Chicago, Robert Wyatt, and John Coltrane to name but a few have all scored significantly lower than this album.
Downvoted by those who didn't like the 90's rave scene, like jazz and wizard rock. Attend an Underworld concert and you will smile. Maybe that's what you need.
What an album. Eminem is a great rapper and this album is angry and unsettling at times. It's also a good snapshot of that period of time and will probably not age well with lots of people. It's just words people, just words.
There is no way that's his natural voice/accent. Stop pretending to be black. Rambling jazzy nonsense. Depressing that the jazz part was the best bit. Not a good sign when you check 3 times to see how close to the end of the album I was.
Just another example that 1971 was a bad year for music. My own ratings has 1971 on average 5/10. Other years average is just over 6/10. This is boring and bland but at least it was only 39 minutes long.
What an album. If you don't like this then you are soulless and have no joy in your life.
Ah the limitations of marking out of 5. It's average, it's 5/10 but 3/5 is too much and 2/5 seems harsh. It's a 3 then.
Downvoted by your standard thick prog/dad rock loving American. If having to listen to British albums annoys you then maybe this list isn't for you. Oh and be quiet, you are all annoyingly loud.
Americans doing punk in the 90's, never going to be amazing. To be fair the whole album is lively but it gets samey and the lead singers voice starts to grate.
