Reviews (page 8 of 14)
Sorpresivo y atrapante, como para conocer mas
Weird but nice. Interesting and catchy. A fresh album in this genre.
This could have easily been a 5-star if some of the fat was removed. “Runaway” alone almost makes up for some of the mediocre songs.
An album of two halves, light n darkness Side A 5*, side B 3*
"Runaway" is so freakin' good. So many brilliant moments.
Nice
Man's insane but this record is also insane
4.5 great but has weird moments like too many features on some songs
Thoughts before listening: I remember this being a really good album. That being said, Kanye is a major douche which makes it hard to enjoy his music anymore. Judging purely based on how much I like the actual music though, I'm sure I'll love this. Review: The music on this is awesome. Some of the best production of its era. A lot of the lyrics are cringey at best with Kanye really coming off as the misogynistic POS he would soon prove to be on a lot of the songs. Still though, these songs are fun to listen to, and I'm adding a few to the playlist. 4-stars.
Really really strong songs I'm here and always something to be interested in. Only thing keeping it from 5 is how awful Kanye is now
okay i get why people meat ride for this for the most part. kanye is def the weakest part of this album but the choirs, instrumentation, the features are all great. stand out songs for me are runaway, devil in a new dress, all of the lights, and gorgeous. didn’t like blame game or the chris rock monologue.
Täytyy myöntää, ettei tää enää lähde yhtä timanttisesti kuin ennen. Power-AotL-Monster on toki jäätävä kombo ja varmaan 2000-luvun popin kovin 3 biisin putki. Mutta melkein kaikissa muissa biiseissä on pituutta ainakin minuutti liikaa. Tälle voisi antaa vitosen sen takia, kuinka monta kertaa on kestänyt kuuntelua. Oon silti aika varma, että tää tulee olemaan mulle jatkossa ennemmin 4/5 levy, eli mennään sillä.
Two things are undeniable: 1) Kanye is bat shit crazy with an ego the size of Jupiter 2) He is one talented and creative mofo. I absolute love the intro of Runaway. Also funny that he makes so many toasts to you in that song (and you know I’m talking to you).
Aangenaam verrast, ben geen hiphop/rap guy maar deze tunes kon ik goed hebben
I didn't give this album enough of a chance when it first came out. It's actually quite good.
Obligatory fuck Ye. But really, fuck this guy. This ain't even close to his best, but it's still pretty great. Top 5, give or take. Several incredible tunes, a bunch of good songs, some stinkers, overall it's great but nothing mind-blowing to me. Never understood the hype tbh. It is one of 3 most important albums of the 2010s (at least in the internet communities) along with TPAB and Blonde, I'll give it that. It would probably land in the 101 albums to listen to before you die as well, that's how massive its influence is. You should pirate it and listen.
Solid
Josiah - 5 Elen - 2 3.5
4/5 - I enjoyed I keep seeing Chris Rock on a gambling advert and I have to change the channel bc it makes me cringe too much
I thought the first part of this album was very good, the 2nd half (after Monster which is an excellent tune) I didn’t vibe with so much.
Not really into this music but some good singers and rapping and you start digging some pieces the more you listen to them. I like monster, so appalled, blame game and others.. Very cynical about women.
Mostro sagrado
Amazing production
Ye peaked here.
I hate to admit this was really good
I really wish I could give this a 3.5. It's varied and interesting and exciting. That said, I see glimpses of Kanye becoming who he is today in a few of these songs. Sometimes the lyrics feel weak. That said, even when I'm rolling my eyes at what he says, the composition of the cong always makes up for it.
It's alright
*THIS REVIEW STILL DOES NOT CONDONE THE RECENT COMMENTS/ACTIONS OF THE ARTIST* The comeback of the decade. Still sounds great after all this time.
Great album. Nicki’s verse is the highlight though.
first listen in entirety
Separate the art from the artist, but in certain lyrics he’s almost foreshadowing his downfall. The fuck boy in me loves this album. The lover girl in me wants to take his advice & run away as fast as I can
I have never listened to a Kanye album, but have heard how talented he is and this album reflects that perfectly. His lyrics are deep and impactful. The beats and songs are mixed so seamlessly. Each song was unique yet fit so well together as an album. The only one I wasn't a fan of was Devil in a New Dress (tracks didn't line up as well and 'background' vocals to me were too prominent). Wish he could get some mental health help so his music could be the complete focus of his legacy.
I still don’t get how this ranks higher, hell, even no. 1 in Kanye’s discography by many people. This is like his 6th best for me, some songs are just clearly better than others and the lows are so low. Still a Decent 8
My first time listening to this album focused. I must say, this album ain't as bad as I thought it out to be. The creative lyrics along with great instrumentals keep the listener engaged throughout the entire thing. 8/10
This one takes me back to freshman year of high school. One of the best albums of the 2010s and Kanye's most cohesive work. This album is packed with so many top producers, great features and classic tracks. It sucks Kanye went crazy.
The feeling I get from this album is that Kanye had quite a few ideas that he really liked and are objectively good, and then sort of filled in the rest with random stuff that would “suffice”. This is true for lyrics: some lines really had me thinking, while others felt like an 15-year old white boy had written them. For beats as well: Every song had a good beat, but most of the time I didn’t feel like it went anywhere beyond an initial build. And also for collaborations: it seems like he wrote down a list of people he wanted to be on the album and then just threw them together randomly. Even with all this criticism, I still pretty much liked all the songs. Favorites were Runaway and Blame Game (though the last part was weird and cringe). Also, lots of random product placement. Wonder if he got paid for that.
I knew this is often regarded as one of Kanye's best albums but I've always been somewhat hot or cold with ye (public persona notwithstanding). Holy shit what an album. I can absolutely see why this album is as highly regarded as it is. The beats, the samples, the lyrics even, all are incredible. I can hear influences other artists got from this album. I mean, even Nobody by Avenged Sevenfold uses an almost identical arpeggio as Hell of a Life. M Shadows has been very outspoken about ye's influence on LIBAD and now that I'm hearing more by him I can tell. Too bad he's a nazi bitch. 5 for music, 4 because of aforementioned nazi bitchness.
4 As someone who hates Kanye just as much as the next rational individual, I feel like I’ve been subconsciously avoiding this album for some time now due to fear of enjoying it, and, well, I did. I totally see why this album was acclaimed when it came out - yes, Kanye’s rapping is great, but the production here is unreal. I know this is classified as a hip hop album, but it really seems to transcend the genre to become its own elevated thing. There’s a lot going on in the mix, but it never feels overcrowded or overblown, and there are splashes of just about everything you could want in an album going on at some point - R&B/soul here, classic rock there, some strings mixed in for good measure, and there’s even a reference to his appearance on South Park. Each and every song feels like its own totally unique thing while still managing to flow perfectly into the next, resulting in what feels like a ride from start to finish. Admittedly, I do think there’s just a bit of a slump in the middle with the stretch of Monster to Devil in a New Dress, despite featuring quite possibly the best rap verse of Nicki Minaj’s career (though that’s a low bar). However, things pick right back up with the best this album has to offer in Runaway - it’s a beautiful, powerful track that feels nowhere near as long as its 9-minute runtime would suggest and, as much as I hate to say it, with its conclusion, I now have a favorite Kanye song. And it really doesn’t slow down from there between the rocking, Iron Man-interpolating Hell of a Life, impassioned, Chris Rock-monologuing Blame Game, and finally, danceable, Gil Scott-Heron-inspired Lost in the World, which provides a great sense of conclusion to the album (especially with the segue into Who Will Survive in America). So, yeah, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would or wanted to. That being the case, it presents a bit of a struggle for me knowing that it came from Kanye West, known racist, Holocaust-denier, and general psycho. And even if you’re someone who believes in/is able to separate art from the artist, the thing about this album is that Kanye doesn’t hold back from putting his insufferable personality on full display in a lot of the lyrics here. It’s insightful in some ways but just as disgusting in others, and in a lot of ways, I feel like it holds me back from truly appreciating the album at max capacity, putting an asterisk next to every moment of enjoyment. At the end of the day, I do think acknowledgement is owed to this album’s fantastic production and overall place in the musical world. You can be a monster and a talented producer, two things can be true - look at Phil Spector. I don’t support or endorse Kanye in any way, but as a music fan, I have to say this is a good album. So, I say give it a listen if you like it, but idk, maybe pirate it or something so you’re not giving this dude more money.
Najbolje pjesme: 1. Runaway 2. So Appalled 3. Blame Game 4. Dark Fantasy 5. Devil In A New Dress 6. Gorgeous 4.5/5
C'est chiant, mais c'était vraiment un bon album.
Not my favorite Kanye but gotta respect the bangers
I can’t deny this artists talent Not his best album, but an arguably strong album Most songs hit the mark and exceed expectations
#2 "Is hip hop just a euphemism for a new religion? The soul music of the slaves that the youth is missin'" - Gorgeous Kanye will forever be one of the best producers/samplers in modern hip hop with some of the wildest lyrics ever penned. It's his comical lyricism and self-absorbed bravado that you can never take serious that throws him off being the G.O.A.T. The emotional tenderness of Runaway along with its abrasive 3 minute autotune solo over dramatic strings seals the top spot for me but there are definitely several more solid tracks with gorgeous symphonics, next level sampling, killer beats and a pleasant amount of heavily distorted guitar recurring throughout.
Great album, but it's hard to separate the music from the artist
Gostei!!
favourite song: blame game good album
I’m so conflicted. At the time I thought this was one of the best produced records I’d ever heard. Of course modern day Kanye is a problematic concept and it would take quite a backflip to change my current opinion
Here's a toast to the douchebags 🥂
Here's MBDTF making the case for separating art from the artist. The production is great, the guest spots are great, Kanye West's lyrics are not so great... But you can see how it was such a big deal at the time.
Yeezy. Monster to DIAND is a crazy 3 peat
Anthemic hip hop. Without speaking on Kanye as a person, his musical output for many years was unrivaled compared to most of his contemporaries. MBDTF followed 808s in a big pivot of style. Some of his greatest songs can be found on MBDTF. Grandiose production value, every song sounds really good, amazing mix. Beats are all killer, lyrics are top tier for the most part. It kind of drags in the middle with two songs back to back bloated with features, but then picks back up quickly afterwards. Quite a long album overall but it never feels like it's dragging since the energy is always there. For sure a classic. Don't listen to Kanye much anymore but I'll still probably revisit.
This is a great album, I'm just not the biggest Kanye fan... He means a lot for the hip-hop community and his works are generally fantastic, but he's a bit of a twat.
I get the hype. This is fantastic. Looses just a bit of steam after track 10
My previous review for Kanye as a person still stands. He's a class 1 cunt, no question. Musically he can be top-class though. Another very good album.
Still fresh after all these years
Kanye before he went cray! Good memories. In between 4 and 5 on this one really, but landing on 4. Good beats and flow all over, and almost all tracks are enjoyable to me. All features works well.
Probably his peak
Great album, not my favorite from him but still have the best songs in his discography.
This is one of the Kanye albums that I always see on lists, but honestly haven't listened to that much. I really liked College Dropout and Graduation when they came out. As I listened to this today I actually really liked it, and I think I'll listen a bit more over the next few days.
Always thought he was just a gayfish then watched a video of him producing something with Jay-Z and listened to this album makes me think he’s also somewhat of a musical genius High 4 just because I can’t rate it as high as sgt. pepper even if he made Paul famous
This album feels like a smoothly produced ride from the start to the end. Enjoyed it a lot, but missed a few highs that I think Graduation has for example.
All these comment about it being a shame that Kanye is crazy now. As if he's ever not been crazy. Luckily he's also crazy good.
My first listen to this album. This is a really great pre-controversial Kanye album. Lots of variety, interesting guests, and great songs/raps. Too bad he went nuts: I have trouble separating the art from the artist on this one.
Крутой альбом
Reconciling my feelings on Kanye has been difficult lately considering how much I love his first six albums. I didn’t listen to MBDTF today, but I’ve listened enough over the years to know where I stand. Not my favorite of his, but undeniably a powerhouse album. I still remember feeling really moved by his 2010 VMA performance of Runaway despite only being 13 at the time. Lost In The World, Monster, Gorgeous, Devil In A New Dress, All Of The Lights… so many classics.
Where the bad bitches, huh? Where you hiding? This album lived in the Outback’s 6-disc player for several years. It brings me back to our transition period from NY to CA. POWER, Runaway, and All of the Lights are particular faves.
I have the album. I enjoy Kanye's music. The Chris Rock skit is why I didn't vote 5. Best tracks: Power and Monster.
....damn it I hate that this is as good as it is
It's a fantastic album. “Monster” is one of the best collabs ever and there’s such great production. Too bad Kanye is unhinged.
Very good, all of the lights is still huge
This album is a mother fucking monster. Deducting 1 star due to future craziness but 2010 Kanye was a genius
A reminder of just how good he was before he lost the plot.
ddd
Another one that wasn't new to me. I listened to this quite a bit when it came out- even though hip hop isn't really my thing. Kanye has gone to shit in the past several years, but this was a fun album if you ignore the lyrics. Not my thing.
Not sure how to rate this one. Super annoying, not my genre at all - but also really impressive. Impossible not to see why this has the acclaim it does, and I'm sure if this was my genre it would be an absolute go to. Really stands out against other albums of the same style/period. Update - Monster is a beast. Easy four stars from me.
Good album before he went nuts
5/5: Runaway, Monster, All of the Lights, Dark Fantasy, Power, Blame Game. 4/5: Lost in the World. Rating: 4/5
3.5 meer. Iconic met Monster etc
Irritatingly good, albeit you could take the middle third out and nobody would miss it
BL: One of the major Kanye albums I have not listened to, I probably should've but never got round to it due to the turbulent discourse surrounding it - some laud it as the best, other spew Fantanoisms about it and agree with his and others opinions. I for one come into this unbiased so I will evaluate it as literally as possible. AL: I Liked this. Best album of all time? No. Best Kanye album? Also probably no, I enjoyed the direction he took with this though, there are some really good ideas and musical motifs explored here. This is probably the second most culturally significant Ye album (besides The College Dropout), and it certainly holds up as it. FT: "Dark Fantasy", "Power", "Monster", "Hell of a Life" 4/5
Art before artist in this case but I can rationalise it by saying, at this point he wasn't as insane as he currently is This is his last great album, probably his last good album The only reason it doesn't get a five is it feels like it outstays it's welcome after runaway (maybe one of my top five kanye songs). The bit with Chris rock is boring and pointless. Feels like it was a time when he was a far more giving artist than he currently is, he wanted to bring people up, now he seems selfish jealous and petty. The highest of 4s
I really didn't want to like this but I have to admit it was good. I hate Kanye as a person but this is a good album. The 1st half is better than the second
This one was harder for me to separate the artist from art for obvious reasons but it's not a bad album. Kanye's messages in a lot of the tracks are full of bravado, yes, but are surprisingly self-aware, both of his own ego and how the world perceives him. The music itself is easy to digest and satisfying with good collabs and samples. I think it's a feat that one of this album's most popular songs "Power" successfully samples a King Crimson riff. Prog rock and rap?! Love it. It's a noteworthy album for our time and place in history, unsure of how it will hold up in generations to come.
Is Kanye West a genius? His recent descent into madness is probably the best argument in favour, such is the fine line between the two (or so they say). It’s that or convincing people to pay $120 for a plain white t-shirt, anyway. Musically I’m not sure, but I would say he’s very competent at what he does. The production is nearly always slick and interesting and varied. His wordplay and cocksure attitude - tempered with just enough self-awareness to keep the listener onside - makes for compelling listening. In the first half of the album he’s operating at the top of his game, but the second half is weaker (Runaway aside) and drags a bit. I’ll still give it 4.5 stars because it’s probably one of this century’s more ambitious and important records.
Unfortunately Kanye has never been the same after his mum died, mental issues have held him back from being the same creative he was. This is maybe the only one that does turn it into a pretty great album though, as i'm not a big fan of 808s or anything that came after this one. It does commit the huge sin of ending miserably though, once you hit the peak of 'Runaway' it sticks the landing by breaking both of it's legs instead. 'Hell of a Life' has the clunky sabbath sample, the chris rock skit is funny once and then just time consuming, then for some reason ending on a bon iver cover is such a bizarre and weak way to close off what was a very creative album earlier.
WOOOOOOO
Surprisingly enjoyed this one! Had never really heard anything from Kanye outside of hit singles. Might actually replay this one
Kanye is a great producer. The beats of these songs are so unique and catchy. Kayne features a lot of legends in this album with a ton of top hits. He really is one of the greats. Listening to Kanye’s lyrics though you can tell just how out there he is. Crazy and genius are so closely related. In the realm of art, they are one and the same. The best songs are in the first half. Would have been a 10 if the album ended half way through. 8/10
Never placed the King Crimson sample in POWER before; this must be my wake-up call to listen to more Kanye. Key tracks for me are POWER, All Of The Lights, So Appalled, Devil In A New Dress. Hard to believe this album is 14 years old.
Disclaimer- I know this man is a horrible human being. I am separating art from artist I suppose. Unfortunately I do not hate Kanye’s music. This album is incredibly influential and just good. I’m taking a point away because the lyrics sometimes were just so vile and unnecessary that I hated listening but genuinely the good songs are so good that it’s not detrimental. Horrible person with some gooood music.
Not a big fan of Kanye but he does have some serious song writing skills
Almost a masterpiece.
+instrumentaalit +featit -osa kappaleista hit or miss -runaway olisi pitänyt olla vikakappale
"My Dark Twisted Fantasy" by Kanye West is a groundbreaking album that seamlessly blends various genres, showcasing Kanye's musical prowess. The production is lush and intricate, featuring a star-studded cast of collaborators. The album explores themes of fame, love, and self-reflection, with Kanye's introspective lyrics adding depth. From the grandiosity of "Power" to the vulnerability of "Runaway," it's a captivating journey through Kanye's artistic vision, making it a timeless and influential piece in the hip-hop landscape.
A diverse and idiosyncratic album. Enough bangers to make it good, but too uneven to be truly great.
En fait je crois que sans connaître le contexte autour de l'album c'est plus dur à apprécier. C'est le début de la fin pour lui et ça se sent même sur la fin de l'album. Par contre ça a bien vieilli le début de l'album!
This is a really great album, soured a little by the unhinged mess Kanye has become since.
Met tegenzin vanwege zijn persoonlijkheid, maar album viel me positief op.
я возможно задену людей, но не лучший альбом Канье для меня лично Алкоальбом: коктейль ерш
I'm not going to listen to this because I really don't want to support Kanye but this is objectively a really good album.
Surprisingly competent. Was this before he went all odd?
This album makes me feel POWERFUL. No wonder Kanye has an ego.
YOU AINT GOT THE ANSWERS SWAY
Wow. I am not at all a Kanye fan but this was a good album. Anything is better than JayZ though!
overrated as fuck but still rlly enjoyable
Some of Kanye's best. Some tracks (So Appalled, Blame Game) overstay their welcome, but this would go on to shape hiphop for the decade to come
Banger, nicki Minaj with the best verse on monster
Like college dropout, an amazing album that is just hard to listen to given who Kanye is as a person
Lots of great music here, I haven't ever specifically listened to Kanye, but I knew many of these. I think the strongest part of this album for me is the music backing the tracks. It's all pretty inventive and cool sounding. The raps are mostly mid to me, Kanye is kind of an edgelord.
The bangers fuckin' slap, the production was game changing but Kanye still Kanye. He's an okay rapper, clever at times, lazy at most. The production is obviously the standout and always has been. Too bad he turned into such an awful person.
4.5
I'm not one that's into the whole "Kanye is a genius" crowd. I think he's a very talented artist, and a particularly gifted producer. Some of the drawback is in his lyrics. His delivery is sometimes very lazy. I will say, this record is pretty consistent. I prefer when Kanye addresses social issues such as the disparity in treatment between black americans and white americans. It's a shame he's gone off the deep end pretty much continually since this album came out.
Now why is Bon Iver here, may I ask.
This is a challenge to rate. The album has some really high highs and the lows aren’t too bad either. At the same time it’s Kanye who’s a massive a-hole all around. It’s probably his best work though. I’ll opt for trying to distance the art from the artist one this one for now.
If you are able to overlook the lyrics (Yes Kanye i forgot about your black balls) it is a really good produced rap albums with unique beats. But at the end this is still an album from Kanye and Kanye is not the best person out there. So if you look beneath all the narcessistic kanye-bullshit his musical genius really shines through.
I miss that old Kanye
4.7
Ugh. Kanye is such a dirt bag but this is so good.
Proof that Kanye could still write music after losing grip with reality.
Probably my favourite Kanye album, it's close to a 5 but there are a few misses.
I like the slower more emotional tracks on this album
Great songs but bloated
Oh my, 3rd song in and I almost feel like dancing. This never happens and it isn't going to, but the feeling is there - amazingly, so far so good. After seeing the accolades chucked at this LP on Wikipedia, as usual I was highly skeptical due to its genre and writer/performer, it is actually really good. Maybe a bit overlong, but it is a part of the CD generation, so can be forgiven for that. Due to my preconceptions of the genre, it is let down by Mr West's vocal performances,.that is the nature of the genre unfortunately, but musically and it's production is, as far as my limited knowledge goes, it seems visionary in the rap/ hip hop genre. I'm actually surprised at myself as I'd written this man off as I complete moron who is out of touch with reality. Turns out it could be media twisting and spinning, the bloke has talent after all. Maybe there is something laced in my tea which unbeknown to me, some mouldy mushroom fell into it and I'll wake up and it was just a bad dream. A low 4.
If you can sperate the art from the artist and forget about the walking turd of human that Kanye has become, then this is a banger across the board. A step up from the more mainstream college trilogy, but not so up its own arse like later stuff. I've stopped listening to him in the last decade but this deserves its place on the list.
Fucker med en del sanger, men ikke alt. Noe duf
Prime Kanye, soo damn good. Before the antisemitism. "I miss the old Kanye"
Weird to think this guy loves Hitler. Great album though
Runaway!
4. When I saw Kanye I had low expectations and they were quickly succeeded. This is pretty good. Can't believe he sampled from King Crimson in power tho. I was shocked
Kanye's best. The sound is so lush and layered on this album. Mixing and mastering is impeccable. Kayne's ear for samples is second to none. The lyrics are mostly surface level, but sonically is where this album really shines.
Almost perfect
As my first real introduction to Kanye (other than his radio hits), this was really unexpected. The album takes you on a journey through Kanye’s world, it feels raw, honest, and personal. I was impressed with the diversity of sounds throughout the album, he really knows how to combine bits of different genres (and all that orchestra!) to create a unique sound. The songs are super catchy…. Damn, this whole album demands your attention, whether you’re a hip-hop fan or not. I give it a 4, only because I’m biased and not actually a fan of hip-hop.
iconic, too bad he's batshit insane
This is a beautifully produced album. This is THE album about a hedonistic lifestyle. Everything about this album adds to that story: the loud, bombastic, lavishly produced production, the braggy sexual living the high life lyrics, and the energy in general. The only thing I didn't care for on this album were the songs: "So Appalled" and "The Blame Game". I don't like the stand up feature in the latter at all. However, other than that the album is amazing and near perfect!!
Very good album with a few stinkers. Production that has aged very well especially for a Kanye album. Strong lyracism. Fav song: All Of the Lights- all time classic.
A familiar listen. This was the era that I started paying attention to Kanye. I remember watching the music video for Power on Much Music. Saw the debut of Runaway live on TV. So much nostalgia for me.
Very memorable, but some lyrics in several songs are just too lame.
Escuche el álbum hay varias canciones buenas y una en especial que tiene una estrofa de Black Sabbath "Iron Man"
8.75 Favorite: Devil in a new dress Least favorite: Monster Sleeper: lost in the world
4.5 stars. High quality production, creative writing. Pulls in lots of different genres. Grandiose, though second half does tail off a bit. Probably won't be back much to re-listen.
Great album, of course. Not quite as amazing as people like to say and as I’ve thought previously, but still an exceptional piece of work. Stronggg 4
Nog klassiker
Fin nok. Pre-full-retard-Ye, men meget lang.... Og slap lige af - så god er du sgu nok heller ikke til at kneppe.
yeah really good, fell asleep though so maybe give it another go at some point he puts the pussy in a sarcophagus
many good songs, some more fillery.
Surprisingly enjoyed this from Ye. Some bangers
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is the fifth album by American rapper and producer Kanye West. It's primarily a hip hop/rap album, but it features a grand production style using a wide range of different musical elements - including the genres of soul, pop, baroque, electronica, progressive rock, and symphonic (orchestra compositions). There are many producers and vocalists featured on this album that had helped West create this masterpiece over days of 24 hour recording sessions. The recording process was collaborative in which West asked for contributions and criticism on the music being produced. Kanye West poured his heart and soul into this album and raps about some of the struggles he faces. All of this resulted in a sonic assault of beautifully layered samples, bass beats, vocals, and instruments that has since been described as a rap opera or the first progressive-rap album. In fact, there is a musical short film called Runaway that West produced along with this album to really make this a rap opera. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was a best-seller at release and critics were raving about it. It's a chart topper and a favorite album for Best Of lists. It's been certified 3x platinum in the US and platinum in Canada. It won the Best Rap Album Grammy in 2012, while "All of the Lights" won the Best Rap Song Grammy. Controversy surrounded the coveted Grammy Album of the Year because this album (along with West's next album Watch the Throne) was not even nominated despite it being one of the most widely positively reviewed albums. This was probably a political decision since Kanye West can be polarizing. In conclusion, this is an awesome Kanye West album - perhaps his best. It's a blockbuster release for hip hop in the early 2010's, and continues to provide inspiration for new projects. I have a soft spot for "Runaway" and "All of the Lights", but every track is a gem. You have to give this album a listen!
Labiau patiko albumas nei tikėjausi. Nėra galbūt favorite iš Kanye repertuaro, bet kai kurios dainos visiškai iconic, ir paliečia sielos kampelius.
damn, this is much better than I expected. A couple of real bangers - and I generally don't like hip-hop.
Fuck Kanye
Some bangers for sure, a few tracks didn't really hold my attention as much though. Not bad tracks, but not a no skip album for sure.
Sometimes become repetitive, has catchy songs.
He's a colossal dickhead but this is very good. Not the best hiphop album we've had (Jay-Z gets that), but it's a polished, ambitious, collaborative effort that works on several levels.
Really excellent album. It's just a shame Kanye's such a jackass. It's hard for me to give it 5 stars given the artist.
Not my cup of tea, but still good tea.
This is musically great tho some of the lyrics are facile. I feel like it is maybe slightly over rated.
Excellent album
Five star production, three star bars
While I don't think it's as absolutely perfect as others, this album really is great and deserves most of it's praise given out over it's legacy. Not only lots of replayability, but it aged extraordinarily well and holds to this day of being a massive landmark moment Hip Hop.
many good songs, some more fillery.
The production of this album is excellent. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy feels big and full, it’s clear the attention to detail and thought that went into it and that’s what makes this album so strong. The featured guests had a strong impact as well, Nicki Minaj’s appearance on Monster was especially impressive. The only guest track that I didn’t necessarily appreciate was John Legend’s. Some clever lyricism on this as well, “Too many Urkels on Your Team, that’s why your wins low” is a favourite of mine. I did appreciate Kanye’s annoyance on Gorgeous when he sang, “Choke a South Park writer with a fishstick” made me think he truly doesn’t get the joke. This is a really well done album a couple tracks that didn’t do it for me. 4.5 stars
Kinda poppy tbh
August 25, 2023 HL: "POWER", "Runaway", "Lost in the World", “All of the Lights”, “Monster” Damn… the best album I’ve heard all week and it’s by self-proclaimed Nazi, Ye and company. If there’s one thing that’s consistent among these very different Kanye albums, is that they bring out the best in his collaborators, whether it’s Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver or Raekwon. Wasn’t super impressed with “Runaway” the 1st time I heard it, but it works so well as a change of pace after the louder, more celebratory “POWER” & “Monster” Here's a short list of all the artists who I had every album (on this website) before a single one by Radiohead: Kanye West (3 albums), Leonard Cohen (5 albums), Queen (3), Sonic Youth (5), U2 (4), Wilco (3), Yes (3)
Will not become my favourite but undeniably a very good album. Great production but lyrics mean I won’t be a regular listener.
I recall getting this albums years ago when I was a teenager, and not really appreciating it all too much, haven’t listened to it since. Now that I’m older I realize why it’s so revered all these years later, all songs sound unique in their own way, very memorable.
Almost didn't listen to this because Kanye is a schmuck. But I did and I'm glad I did. It's a lot better than I expected.
first two songs both felt like intros, also felt slightly contrived but could equally be him being mentally ill. mostly banger after banger in the middle but ends and begins somewhat forgetabbly.
I never got into Kanye. I liked this album but it didn’t hit like a supposed all-timer should. Maybe it’s too introspective and I don’t care about him that much.
Millennial nostalgia was strong with this one, and it’s always interesting to revisit a “masterpiece” without zeitgeist. The whiplash from Runaway (which is a masterpiece) to Hell of a Life (which is stupid) is significant. The Chris Rock skit is far too long. That said the high points of this album are raw and virtuosic. I miss the old Kanye!
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: I do, it was peak Kanye, strongest run of tracks upon this release and the features on this were insane and added so much to it Favourite song: Track 8 - Devil in A New Dress
Such a good album, only thing i would say is the second half is a tad over dramatic but otherwise perfect
BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF BUT HE MADE MBDTF
😎
Everyone's favourite narcissist here with a pretty banging album, mixing hip-hop beats with elements of rock and R&B to good effect. The machismo is sometimes a little grating but otherwise a solid album
All time classic really great
Discazo. Un par de canciones flojas, pero en general guay.
Shame Kanye turned out to be an anti-semetic psycho cause dang does he make some solid hip-hop. The various collaborations, the hints of different genres and influences, and the production is all killer.
listened to again masterful production, features, and bars
if somebody else made this i’d give it a 5
4,5/5 Highlights: Dark Fantasy, Gorgeous, All Of The Lights, Runaway
First listen: amazing production, but I'm not really convinced by the lyrics Second listen: maaan, I really made a mistake of paying attention to the lyrics. I felt similarly when listening to JAY-Zs Blueprint. However, unlike there, these beats are fire. Nonetheless, I'd much prefer it to be instrumental. Apparently I found out that pop rap is not my cup of tea. A weak 4
Some bangers, Some very forgettable songs. Overall the production is amazing, but has some lacklustre features. Favourite tracks “Runaway” and “ All Of The Lights” 8/10
Good album despite Kanye being an anti semite
Some of the lyrics in here made me want to give this less but I gotta admit it's a solid listen
Admittedly I’d give this a 3.5 if possible. The songs that are good are great but the ones that aren’t hold the album back and a couple songs run a little too long in my opinion
I like it, even though it's Kanye, even though some don't.
I avoided Kanye my entire life due to his lackluster reputation as a decent member of society, but I started listening to him last year when I accidentally listened to 808s & Heartbreak. When I say I accidentally listened to a whole ass album, I played "Welcome to Heartbreak" with the intention of only listening to "Welcome to Heartbreak". And then "Heartless" came on, then "Amazing", then "Love Lockdown", and before I knew it, I had gone through the whole album. The worst part was that I really liked it. So yes, Kanye is a piece of shit and him and his fan base infuriate me. But he makes damn good music. I thought "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" was overrated the first time I listened back in September. I didn't think all the hits were even that good. But I've been listening to "So Appalled" all year, and that has yet to get old. Upon the most recent listen, however, I appreciated it a lot more. I can't articulate why though. More importantly, I can't believe he sampled King Crimson in "POWER". That's crazy that I recognized "21st Century Schizoid Man" (bless this generator for introducing me to King Crimson), but it also makes so much sense.
I hate Kanye. He’s an awful, awful person. I cannot say enough bad things about who he is. Not to mention, my freshman roommate was obsessed with Kanye. And I hated that kid too. One time he held a Kanye album drop party in our room at midnight without telling me, then him and a few others got so blacked out that one passed out on the toilet mid shit and the others were puking their guts out in every trash bag we had. And guess what - the album didn’t even drop that night!!! But goddamnit, so many of these songs just hit. That is the only way I can describe it. Every single song makes me believe that I can one day like rap. Ironically the only thing that could make this a 5 is if Kanye wasn’t rapping.
I really like(d) this album. I really dislike what Kanye has become.
Solid Rap album, surprised at the diversity. Too much profanity.
Something I have never heard before, but I like it. Not preferred stile, but good to listen to.
Pretty Good Album actually.
I can understand why this is being seen as such a pivotal album in HipHop history and Kanye's career. This is his Magnum Opus and it has all gone downhill from here, music and sanity wise. I think the balance was found here.
Supergodt album!
This is an absolute masterpiece from Ye. Song after song is filled with top notch lyrics and it’s musically perhaps his most ambitious endeavor. I hate giving the guy props but a great album is a great album.
I don’t like Kanye West or hip hop, but this album is good. Production wise honestly brilliant, the rapping is super mediocre in my opinion. I didn’t like when he was actually doing any of the ‘singing’ I liked when there were guests and whatnot. Some great songs sampled too That being said that much of KW was way too much. By the second half of the album I was just waiting for it to be over Saved tracks: Dark Fantasy, Gorgeous, POWER, Who Will Survive In America
As always, let me preface this by saying that Kanye, the person, is trash. Contrary to the opinion of some, I also think that Kanye the rapper is trash. He comes up with the occasional good line, but for the most part, his lines come off like a 10 year-old who thinks he's edgy. Kanye the singer? A whole other level of bad. But Kanye the producer? I've gotta give it up to that guy. This album has some of the best production in rap history. The samples are fantastic. The features are great. Overall, it's a pretty damn great collection of songs, in spite of the artist.
4.5/5
Album has some class songs. Power is anthemic. Gorgeous also a bop. Shame Kanye is such an anti-semite and general asshole. All of the lights and monster not as good, Nicki Minaj pisses me off on the latter song haha. And devil in a new dress is confusing... the song doesn't mention the colour, style of this new dress at all 🤔 song slaps tho. Good album x
I especially like this album.
What an amazing album. Everything is so good and original and exciting. Alive with energy. So many good artists all on one album. Dragged toward the end of the album and some songs may go on a little long, but I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. No doubt will listen to again. 4/5
A lush, epic, melodramatic, hip hop saga of an album. I wanted to dislike this, but much of it is pretty great. For someone that spouts such abhorrent views, Ye is surprising touchy about a South Park episode poking fun at him. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Runaway Date listened: 31/03/23
4.0
Separating the art and the artist. Lots of amazing songs. A shame Kanye went crazy. Won't stream his music again to give him money.
What a surprise! I knew Kanye West more as a celebrity with extremely terrible opinions and world views, than a musician, producer or a rapper. But oh boy, he made a really great album almost 13 years ago now! First of all, I love the marriage between Kanyes style and prog rock riffs turned into samples. It creates a fabulous atmosphere without any additional input, just such a great foundation for songs. And then you have so many collaborations from many famous rappers and singers, but every time it actually adds something special to the track. The four opening songs are instant classics, at least in some genres, amazing beats, vocals, feeling. Unfortunately, the level drops quite a bit after "All of the Lights". I didn't like that the style became much subdued and the energy of the first art of an album was gone. None of the tracks from the second half were interesting or had any repeatability value, in my opinion. But just the four tracks to start off the album were enough to place "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" on this list. Overall, I really enjoyed this position, looks like at some point Kanye was actually a talented man!
Disclaimer: I’m on Kim’s side, I’m on Taylor’s side, and I’m on Pete’s side. Kanye’s foray into anti semitism that he has now renounced because of 21 Jump Street ??? is not ok and disgusts me deeply. However I’ve decided to rate this album based purely off the music. I’ve never listened to more than a few of Kanye’s hits before. The beginning of this album was so good I honestly thought I might have to give him a 5 against my will. Fortunately, then “All of the lights” came on, a very weak song despite my love for Rihanna. Monster would have been a very average song without that incredible Nicki verse, and I’m not giving Kanye credit for her talent! Runaway is apparently widely acclaimed but I thought it was nothing special, way too long and the last two minutes of nothing but distortion gave me a headache. Blame Game contained a lyric I found disturbing in light of the reality of domestic violence against women and the number of times victims are accused of lying “Lie and say I hit you… running my name through the mud”. It was made worse by the weird talking at the end of the song. Gross. I loved Dark Fantasy and Lost In The World. Best tracks: Dark Fantasy, Power, Monster, Devil In A New Dress, So Appalled, Hell Of A Life, Lost In The World Worst tracks: All Of The Lights, Runaway, Blame Game A final shout out to this lyric: “No more drugs for me, pussy and religion is all I need” which pretty much seems to define Kanye to this day.
Not his best and soundwise hasn't aged well. But some emotional highpoints of Kanye West.
This album just made me sad that Kanye became Ye. The production quality is out of this world.
He is a world class moron, but the album is easy to listen.
Kanye is bonkers but this album is awesome. Close 5 for me.
This is an exceptionally good album, but I struggle with Ye's lyrics too much to be able to award a 5.
Beautiful, dark, twisted, fantastic 👍🏾
Fuck Kanye. But, this was a tour-de-force. I know around this time there wasn't a lot of prog-hip-hop or anything approaching this level of grandiosity in the genre, so for that it's admirable. Crazy collabs as well. It's not my fav. style of hip hop but credit to where credit is due.
Close to the end of Ye's genius. After this and Yeezus, he really started slipping for me. But this record is intense. It's challenging, ok a good way.
Unreal. Didn’t want to like it. Loved it.
The guest roster is impressive and the beats are textured and memorable. Arguably Kanye’s last great work before he descended into the sad, hateful man he has become.
Wasn’t at all expecting to like West’s music because of the controversial bollocks he comes out with but I have to respect rhyming sarcophagus with oesophagus. He’s funny. I think he knows he’s an arse hole and is unapologetic about it. He’s got a really good grasp of rhythm and can turn simple Melodic lines into something really beautiful. I actually understand why he is famous now.
Nice listen, runaway alone is perfect
I was really hoping to hear Fish Sticks on this album. Alas I am disapointed but enjoyed it non the less.
Yo!
A Kanye West album definitely wasn't on my wish list for Christmas so I took the day off and didn't listen. Too bad Ye is such a public mess because a lot of this album is truly great. Yeah, some of it is misogynist-ick and some of it is just plain ick. But several of the songs really got to me in a way that's hard to reconcile. Once again, I am failed by a one-dimensional scale.
I don’t really want to hear any more about Kanye so I was not happy with this Christmas present. Still, I got through this and must admit that it is an impressive album. The production spares no expense. It’s expertly crafted. The lyrics are often pretty great although there are some dud moments. Like the Chris Rock skit at the end of the Blame Game - yuck. Some of these songs are truly great. If I had never heard of Kanye this would likely be a 5. He definitely complicates my feelings greatly about this album. Going with a 4 but part of me thinks that’s too high and part of me thinks that is too low.
Rap progresivo. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Très bon!
Definitely not my favorite Kanye album, but still good. He is a talented dude.
Again an album I would not have thought I’d like but did.
Kanye is crazy and I hate to admit that his music is good
Better than I remember it being. I have always felt this was overrated (still do) but maybe appreciated it more this listen. 4/5
still like earlier Kanye better
I sure would like to hate this album seeing as how big a prick Kanye turned out to be but this really is a great album. I guess if you’re looking for really deep lyrics you won’t find it hear but you will find great production and clever wordplay. I enjoyed listening to it
notes - ive never actually listened to this whole album, just songs - kanye is all over the news lately so its cool to rewind to 2010 - great samples and verses all over the whole album - described by kanye as a kind of apology for 808s and heartbreak - theres a good amount of humour and jokes on here to balance the indulgence and ego - something i really like in this album is his use of super compressed overdriven drums, they have this great way of filling out the songs fav - devil in a new dress - i really like the samples on this song - kanye’s energy is great, and rick ross has a really creative verse least fav - so appalled - some good verses on here but the song doesn’t really change up in any interesting ways 4.5/5
Rap progresivo. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Ik vond 808s en heartbreak beter. Daar zat precies wat meer reliëf in
Loved the first half more than the second. Power, followed by All of the Lights followed by Monster was the highlight for me.
Never took Kanye West seriously either. All I really know about him is he’s a batshit crazy cringe lord. Maybe so, and yet. Still can’t stand boast songs and there are a couple that would be better if there were no vox, but damn if it doesn’t sound really, really good end to end. (previously listened)
Dark Fantasy tem bom riff e vocais. All of the Lights também é interessante. So Appalled também tem várias coisas interessantes.
foo
First four songs are one of the best album openers ever. Rest of the album doesn’t keep that level but still good overall.
I’m not into rap but decided to invest in this album. It was worth it. I’m starting to appreciate the esthetic and virtuosity of the performers. I find myself getting into the groove and surprised by the creativity. I’ll have to listen to this again!
Cool!
Listening to this post Alex Jones interview, it doesn't hit the same, not like it used to
It's a great and well produced album, but it's far from being my favorite work from Kanye. I feel like it shortened the gap between rap and pop music, but I'm not sure this is a nice thing. Overall, it's good music, features a handful of well curated samples and a few great special guests. 3.8
While I dislike Kanye's antics, I'm definitely warming up to his music. Lot's of carefully crafted "songs" with original instrumentation, string quartets (!), talented vocalists & fellow rappers. Plus there are no 1 minute interludes (aka taping a rant by your drunken homey) and few F-bombs. It's rap for old white guys, with nods to King Crimson & Black Sabbath.
I've actually never listened to Kanye West before, well because he's such a monumentally arrogant, narcisstic douche. I avoided anything to do with him and the Kardashian clan like the plague because to me they epitomize everything that is wrong with this world. But 1,001 gave it to me for my homework assignment so I had to give it a spin. Right off the bat, Dark Fantasy samples a relatively obscure piece from Mike Oldfield's In High Places, hey that's pretty cool. POWER then samples King Crimson's 21st Century Schizhoid man, and its seamlessly integrated into the song so it sounds like its been part of that song forever. Whoa, that's impressive! I also hear samples taken from some of my favourite pieces, eg April 14 from Aphex Twin, and You are, I am from Manfred Mann. There are also samples from Gil Scott Heron, Smokey Robinson and Iron Man from Black Sabbath that are really well done. As a self confessed music geek, hearing these samples from obscure musical gems being so well integrated into his songs is truly impressive. And the music itself is also really well done, its complex and superbly produced: All of the Lights, Devil in a New Dress, Runaway, they are all so good. After over 500 albums so far, this is the most impressive new (to me) album that I've heard so far.
It all ends with President Kayne West holding the nuclear codes, doesn't it?
Peak Kanye West never better but could possibly have been slightly shorter
Kanye is goated truly a genius
I’m definitely being forced to confront a lot of musical hang-ups in this initial run of albums. It’s not exactly a unique opinion to hate on Kanye, and I certainly fall into the category of “detractor”. I’ve also held a lot of reservations about the style of contemporary hip-hop he has helped pioneer. My opinion on Kanye remains unchanged. The guy is repellent and everything he stands for reinforces my puzzlement over his status as an artistic genius. This album is extremely underwhelming when it comes to lyrical content, and does nothing to convince me that hip-hop is held to a complete double-standard by its fans (and we all know why…). Even the more nuanced reflections on tracks like “Gorgeous” are undermined by the Kanye’s asinine commonplace observations. He gives a lot of time on this album to guest artists as well, which offers some respite. However, a strange Stockholm Syndrome began to set in during these prolonged absences and I actually missed the guy’s presence on tracks. And then I realised this album is a real grower in terms of its appeal. Complementing the production is a bit of a given, but it really is spectacular (particularly on “Runaway”, “Monster” and “POWER”). And in that regard I have gained a new appreciation of Kanye as an artist. He unquestionably embodies the hypocrisy and contradictions of his genre, but he’s more of a deliberate conduit than an unwitting victim. I refuse to afford him the luxury of attributing his vacuous artistic sentiment to the refuge of ironic provocation or iconoclasm. Kanye stands for nothing consequential. But there’s something extremely vital about this album which I cannot get away from, and it’s completely down to his singular talent. 100% will revisit in the future.
"Too many Urkels on your team, that's why your Winslow" As someone who never goes out of their way to listen to Kanye, it's a testament to how prolific his music is that I've heard almost every song from this album. Not a fan of the man but I will give credit that his songwriting skills are excellent and this album is loaded with some absolute bangers. Dark Fantasy, Gorgeous, Power, All of the Lights, Runaway, Devil in a New Dress. Dammit I'm going to give Kanye a 5 aren't I? Didn't like: Monster, So Appalled, Hell of a Life, Blame Game...ok there's enough here to shave off a star. Some other notes: The lineup on Monster is hilarious, Kanye, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj.....and then Bon Iver. That "HHEEHH" sound he makes is like nails on a chalkboard.
I love this album but in recent years I've really come to understand why Fantano gave it a 6. And Kanye himself said he wasn't fond of it overall, saying it wasn't bringing anything new to the table. I see MBDTF as a complete perfection of the music he'd been pulling off since his debut, but it didn't blaze any trails. It was a total flex/victory lap. It's not bad at all though, and has a lot of iconic tracks. Kanye's a little tainted for me recently, though, so not really listening to him anymore.
certains propos sont dérangeants
Enjoyed this way more than I expected.
While I don't like him personally, it's impossible to deny that Kanye West is a legendary and very influential rapper and music producer. I enjoyed this album a lot and I will continue to listen to his music and try to separate the art from the person.
First time I heard this album was at a closet of an apartment in Philly at 3 am in the waning days of 2011 as some guy we were staying with was blasting it and trying to convince us of its greatness when all we wanted to do was sleep. I liked it better this time.
This is probably only the third or fourth time that I have listened to this album, but it is one of Kanye's best. I was a big fan of his "college" trilogy and when this album released he was starting to act a little off of the rails. I think that turned me off a little, but I wasted time by not appreciating this album then.
lycanthropy rap
Listened Before? N This was a fantastic album. I have never heard a single song by Kanye, and this was a good intdroduction. That said, I will probably never listen to it again. I'm usually capable of separating the art from the artist but in this case I don't want to. I already didn't like Kanye, so there's no need to put in some effort to forget he's a giant douche. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: None. I won't give him money.
I remember not being impressed by this when it first came out. I liked some of it but I didn't love it like so many others did. In 2022 I find this a lot more enjoyable for some reason. I feel like if I spend more time with it it could get a 5 out of me. It's a very strong 4, despite Kanye being the unbearable creature that he is.
4 good album. Shame Yeezy is such a fuckin dickhead
Generally its very impressive but, man, some of these lyrics are a bit edgelord
I thought I was going to hate it.
Another great sounding hip hop record. I really had no idea how talented Kanye West is. Yes the record is too long but I hardly notice because each song real substance and stands on its own as a piece. The longer songs never wear out their welcome. A testament to his inate ability to keep things flowing and accessible. 4 🌟
Despite only being two years after Ye's album in 2008, MBDTF feels like it was a decade in the making. The production has a perfect blend of stuff that we love him for, like using his own voice to make a guitar riff on the end of "Runaway" like on 808sAHB or sampling vocals on "Devil In A New Dress". The cover art is interesting, because it might be the most iconic one on a Ye album. Kanye Bear is iconic, but the fact that the cover is mostly censored makes this more iconic while thinking of it. This album is packed of features, and it can either be a blessing or a curse. For example, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and Kid Cudi kill it on the retrospective tracks that that are on, however some features just leave me with a bad taste in my mouth I feel like they could've removed JAY-Z's verse from "Monster", because it feels like he didn't understand what the track was even about. Chris Rock ruins the would-be-great "Blame Game", since the joke runs out if you just repeat it. My favourite track would have to be "POWER". I know that it is a bit overplayed, but the fact that it took over 1 000 hours just shows how dedicated Ye was to get respect back from the industry after they painted him as an asshole after the VMAs incident. My least favourite track would have to be "All Of The Lights". The track has like a thousand features on it, and I don’t think that anyone really sounds good on it except for Rihanna. 8/10
The man is conceited and thinks he is way better than he is. I’ve rated other albums pretty low, but I will say this is a pretty great listen.
Love this. Had never paid attention to Kanye west before- not sure why. This is fun, innovative, fresh hip hop.
Funny and charming, with memorable moments.
Not my thing but very listenable… brash US pop.
Parts of this were much better than I remembered, and others were very "Kanye 1.0" (which I found a little grating at the time, and more now).
If I heard this before Yeezus, I would have hated that one even more, because this cements Kanye as being able to construct consistently amazing songs. Still not a fan of him as a vocalist or lyricist though, so it's a good thing this has loads of guest features on it. Also, the last three tracks could get cut and it would make the album better in my opinion.
Early kayne.. what’s not to like. Have to try very hard to separate the artist from the art though!!
Could listen to again. Not that Google speaker will let me listen to anything other than the instrumental version.
Kanye has just gotten crazier and crazier over time, but this album is pretty good.
This album is a superb mess. Separating the artist from the work gives it a 4/5. Throwing in the current scandals makes some of the songs like Monster incredibly chilling.
Great album with longer ranty songs.
Production is fantastic. Takes a little to get running, but from "POWER" and onwards, it's amazing. Bangers and wonderful atmospheric jams like the fantastic "Runaway". Nicki Minaj's feature on "Monster" is nuts.
POWER and All of the Lights are absolute bangers Probably the best Kanye album? At least it's the last one where his ambition and ego were still positives fueling his creativity before getting diminishing returns on subsequent albums. Great beats, exceptional hooks, great use of samples. Runaway and Blame Game feel a little overlong, and there is a bit of a forecasting of the born-again religious direction he would take on his more recent albums. 4/5
Not normally a fan of Kanye, but can hear why this made it into the 1001 list, great album, just a pity about the personality.
Whats has Kanye ever done for us....... Well this is my first listen to this and I am surprised at the content, some interesting fusion stuff. I must admit that even that this was post his Taylor Swift Rant I am drawn to his inventiveness and his (I Hope) tongue in cheek view of populism...so is his pro trumpism really irony, to see how far they would let him go? Has some credit this album but an overuse of Autotune and some dodgy lyrics. I liked "Runaway"
Not my kinda music but not bad Don't really like the way he talks about women though
A real iconic album from Kanye and a great follow up from 808s & Heartbreak. There are several songs on the album that are still in rotation on many playlists (as of Jan 2022) that never fail to please. At times throughout it can be a bit self-indulgent with the extra long tracks. (9 min+). Best: Power; Monster Worst: Devil In a new Dress
😈
Would have given 5 if it weren’t for auto tuning and some v v dodgy lyrics
Dark Fantasy - Intro reminded me of "Night Before Christmas", leads to some electronicially clean gospel vibes, then a verse which starts with the classic "ye, ye", Family Matters pun wins some points for sure. Monster - Absolutely amazing, especially Nicki Minaj So Appalled - RZA kills it Runaway - Beautiful song
Kanye certainly has things to say. An album filled with a lot of variety, and perhaps one of my favorite songs that I didn't know existed - Runaway.
Never took Kanye West seriously either. All I really know about him is he’s a batshit crazy cringe lord. Maybe so, and yet. Still can’t stand boast songs and there are a couple that would be better if there were no vox, but damn if it doesn’t sound really, really good end to end.
Нравится, как звучит альбом в целом, но не зацепилась. ┐('~`;)┌ Возможно, хип-хоп не совсем мой жанр, а текст больше актуален для американских реалий. Стоит послушать его еще пару раз.
Well, I gave college dropout a 3 so this one’s got to be a 4. I’m able to see why Kanye has blown up in popularity, but I’m still going to dispute that he’s an “artistic genius”. Maybe on the grounds of modern pop hip hop, I can understand why he grabs so many peoples attentions. But, when actually analyzing, all I see him doing is glueing a bunch of other peoples art together, throwing stream of consciousness lyrics on top, and looping it. On top of that, a lot of his songs are like exhibit a for the concept of projection. Every song is about himself, his ego, and his utterly unthinkably deep lack of self awareness. What’s most nauseating is how many people parrot his egoic verbal diarrhea and bow down to worship the almighty Ye just because a bipolar narcissist figured out how to mix shit in a studio. A. It’s innovative AF for hip hop (but, really is it when you just rely on sampling for all your shit?) B. It appeals to the masses with its simplicity C. It couldn’t possibly have been bad with the amount of collaborative talent involved Credit where credit is due for this albums success, but no I don’t think he’s that talented of a musician. He’s talented at being a celebrity and controversial media masturbation fodder figure.
Another great sounding hip hop record. I really had no idea how talented Kanye West is. Yes the record is too long but I hardly notice because each song real substance and stands on its own as a piece. The longer songs never wear out their welcome. A testament to his inate ability to keep things flowing and accessible. Some more listens might bring this to 5 stars but for today...4.5 🌟
I feared listening to this, based on my perception of Kanye West as a personality. But in truth, the album is intriguing, engaging, and entertaining. Along the way, there are a few moments where the lyrical compositions deter, but the ambition and cinematic scale of the sounds win through. Surprisingly good.
Do like a bit of Kayne I must say
One of my favorites from high-school! So many good songs on this album
Hate that its so good, but it is
Yeah its powerful for sure...with that said, I have to separate the artist from the art...with that said as well, at least its better than a lot of the generic rap out there...maybe given time I'll appreciate the message more.
