Reviews (page 5 of 14)
Love this album. It is one I seek out. Kanye is so impressive in his production. The talent recruited for this album is amazing.
The biggest asshole in the universe but damn this was a good album
I was doing so well not listening to Kanye ever since his little outburst of naziism but oh well. Sure a lot of the songs on this album drag on for 30 seconds-2 minutes too long and the tone is all over the place but then you hear a trademark electric guitar solo and everything is forgotten. Every song could be 20 minutes long and the production could still carry it to a 5 for me. Gorgeous power and devil in a new dress are probably my favs in an album packed with bangers.
It's really good but this ranks as like my 5th favorite kanye. Too bad he's pro hitler.
i haven't listened to this in full in a long time- it's really good.... components go so well together. great tracks. iconic album
Holy shit that was amazing.
Every song is a banger.
Perfect album. No skips
Nothing to discuss.
Awesome music.. terrible person 😔
Gonna withhold any comments on this one
- where do I even begin - one of the greatest albums ever made - the master of sampling - every feature is perfect - Runaway oh my lord - 6 stars

MBDTF remains a masterpiece that transcends the confines of hip-hop, solidifying Kanye West's legacy as a visionary artist.
One of the top rap albums of all time and one of the most expensive albums ever made. In my top 5 albums. If I could give it 6 stars I would. I bought one single album in 10 years and this was it.
Pull up in the Sri Lanka what!
The album that cemented Kanye’s status as a generational talent capable of creating complex art. This album is like a vortex of unrelated tangents that suddenly became cogent when synthesized through the beautiful dark twisted mind of the auteur.
I used to love this album. I think it’s fair to say I’ve soured on all of West’s music since he outed himself as an anti-semitic douchebag, and I have a hard time enjoying any of his music past or present. I’ve especially soured on the lyrical content and found much to be desired, especially compared to West’s first 2 albums of Yeezus. MBDTF is a masterclass in production, sampling, and collaboration, and it shouldn’t be underestimated how massive this was in 2010. It’s still one of the best rap albums ever made, and certainly one of if not THE best art rap/pop rap/whatever you want to call this genre albums ever made. Pretty much every song is a masterpiece, and it’s a shame that they were made by such a colossal asshole. Whatever happened to the Kanye West who wrote “Balding Donald Trump taking dollars from y’all”?
This album changed how hip hop was listened to in all perpetuity. Very few albums reach this tier. There was something special about this even during the recording where Kanye made all the performances do their part in black tie.
the one piece is real
Que puedo decir, es un buen álbum
Insanely talented producer and creative musician.
forgot how many bangers this album has. during the Kanye peak.
sent with concern that will go unaddressed - i hope he gets better
Incredible album by Kanye. The lyrics are so amazing and the beats are just as good. One of the best rap albums of all time. 10/10
Amazing.
Loved it! every track had something unique and it had flow throughout.
Person aside, album slaps.
Legendary shit mane
Easy to view this release based on Kanye’s behavior and judge the music accordingly but that’s a disservice to the music. What I like about the 1001 concept is forcing me to listen to an entire release. It’s changed my approach. Some I’ve listened to a few times through. This release to me is lyrically incredible.
1. Dark Fantasy - 9.4 - incredible rapping and sampling. Iconic. 2. Gorgeous - 9.8 - incredible flow and lyrics and beat. Cudi sounds great, too. 3. POWER - 10 - just incredible. great sampling, great rapping. damn. 4. All Of The Lights (Interlude) - N/R - pretty strings though. 5. All Of The Lights - 9.5 - a bit poppier, that's okay. Rihanna sounds great and the story being told is great. 6. Monster - 9.6 - one of the best verses I've ever head. Jay-Z and Nicki were also awesome. 7. So Appalled - 9.0 - chorus doesn't hit as hard on this one. Jay-Z and CyHi still do, and the song is still great. 8. Devil In A New Dress - 10 - Incredible production, even more so on this song. Some of his best flow ever. Guitar solo also goes crazy. 9. Runaway - 10 - Piano is iconic, and the lyrics on this are incredible and some of the most emotional on one of his songs. 10. Hell Of A Life - 8.8 - great beat. doesn't stand to other songs on this album lyrically. 11. Blame Game - 8.9 - love John Legend in this. This is Ye's weakest song on the album though. Beat is crazy good. 12. Lost In The World - 9.2 - with five people singing at once, the amazing production doesn't even make it sound too busy. 13. Who Will Survive In America - 8.5 - powerful speech.
Power is such a good song. Honestly amazing album. Like every track. Nothing even remotely bad. Amazing.
One of the best albums from the best artist of all time (IMO). Easy 10/10.
i love YE and this shit
Fucking phenomenal. My anthem.
Peak
Not my kind of music and I can’t imagine I’ll listen to it again, but it’s an incredibly well made album. I enjoyed it! Runaway always has been and still will be a staple on my ‘still listening to’ lists.
Genius even with the malas palabras
Kanye's greatest body of work. This album got my punk-ass into hip-hop 14 years ago, and it still holds up to this day. 10 outta 10. Perfection.
In my opinion, Kanye West’s magnum opus. A coalescence of all of his talents that he had developed over his four albums before this. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy record partly meant as a reprimand for the public and media’s backlash against Kanye a year earlier as a result of the controversy he had with Taylor Swift, but it is also a record dealing with fame, relationships, and self-reflection, a first for Kanye. This is truly one of the greatest hip-hop/rap albums of all time. And whenever a statement like that is made, it is very bold, but MBDTF deserves to be in the running for that conversation. Almost every track is a marvel of music production. The lyrics are all-around excellent and this record arguably presents Kanye West at his songwriting peak. Not to mention the features from other artists who are also great additions. It is unreal how many classic songs are in this album. The intro track, Dark Fantasy, has one of Kanye’s most unforgettable hooks, “Can we get much higher?” Songs like Power and All of the Lights can bring entire stadium crowds on their feet alongside the nonstop rhythmic drum assault that is Monster. Devil in a New Dress cannot go unmentioned, but I feel that it is a little overhyped yet still very good. But one track stands above them all and the rest of Kanye West’s discography as well to be honest: Runaway. I don’t know if there if is a single other piano note played by another man that could instantly invigorate a crowd. This track is the album’s most apparent moment of self-reflection as Kanye recognizes his own flaws in relationships and other parts of his life. This is his masterpiece song, from his and Pusha T’s verses to the iconic piano and beat, it cements itself as one of rap’s legendary moments. The other half of the album is awesome too, but at this point, just go listen to the album. It’s great. Rating: 10/10 Best Song: Runaway Other Highlights: Power, All of the Lights, Monster, Devil in a New Dress
Wanne banger jonge
Here we go. It had to show up eventually. I’m going to start this by clarifying that just because I’m speaking positively about this man’s music does not mean I am in support of anything stupid he has said, really ever. I just appreciate the art he has created. That is it. Now, this is probably one of the biggest points of contention in Kanye’s career, second only to Yeezus. There are some who absolutely adore this record, and others who don’t prefer this sound. Saying that I’m a fan of Kanye’s music and saying I’ve never heard this album all the way through in the same sentence is like blasphemy to some. This is supposedly the “magnum opus” Kanye album. Meh. I don’t see it. Don’t get me wrong, it is fantastic, but not this perfect flawless piece of music people make it out to be. From a music standpoint, this is probably the most in-tune Ye has ever been with himself. He fucked up big time with Taylor, exiled himself, and made this. This album is bigger on all fronts. Bigger drums, bigger strings, and more of everything than any album before, and maybe even after. It’s self indulgent and egotistical, but reflective and emotional. This is Kanye at his most defensive, but also at his most vulnerable, except for maybe 808s & Heartbreak. This has some of the strongest production of any record he has ever made, due in part to his collaboration with some of the greatest producers of our time. And most of the features on here give some of the greatest verses and performances of their careers, especially people like Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj. But this also some really strange productions choices. Like how his vocals sound strange on the opening track. Does Gorgeous really have to be distorted like that? The best part of that song is Cudi, mostly because his vocals are clean. Blame Game is kind of boring, and does the Chris Rock section have to be so long? It’s also kind of vulgar and out of place on an otherwise heartfelt song. And although I get that the outro to Runaway is supposed to mean something, and it doesn’t change that the song is still probably Kanye’s greatest he’s ever made, it just goes on for too long and sounds stupid compared to the rest of the track. Overall though, none of these complaints change the fact that this record is a great piece of work. One that maybe gets overrated a little, but is still amazing. Rating: 9/10
Dude sucks but this album is good
I'm just gonna cheat and not listen to this album and review it anyway. That's only because it would be the 150th time I've played MBDTF. That's probably accurate. It's the album that was my gateway to Kanye, to hip hop, to weird hip hop, and the entire scene of 2010's hip hop mixtape culture, Soundcloud, heavy concept albums. Everyone is inspired by this in some way. It has that Kanye signature, "Instant Classic," minimalist sound with the production that's both inventive, full, and also stripped back. I'm drawn like a moth to a flame to this album. It'll probably (almost certainly) be Kanye's greatest work. Hard to top. Somehow he gets a dozen guests artists on this record, and THEY do their best work in years on HIS album. How does he do that? I mean, this is right at the top of the artistic mountain for me, in terms of what's possible in hip hop. Think I'm just gonna say that and not elaborate. Mic drop! 5/5
This was the peak of Kanye balancing his creative genius and being an insane person. Beats and loops are money, lyrics are clever as hell, cameos on point. Added personal nostalgia that when I started dating my wife this was our go to album. Anytime we get trashed k she puts this on.
I don't know what fantano's problem is, this shit is fire all the way
Album came out when I was in highschool. Changed how I listened to music.

Amazing. Unexpectedly loved this.
9.5/10 BEYONCE MADE ONE OF THE BEST VIDEOS OF ALL TIME. ONE OF THE BEST VIDEOS OF ALL TIME
love
it’s perfect. not a single flaw.
perfect album. Hit after hit. The sound is revolutionary and something that I haven't seen anyone replicate as perfectly as this. This man invented the future of hip-hop and is very influential.
Possibly one of the greatest albums ever released ⭐
Best Kanye's Album
This album is incredible, Kanye is a bigot.
Where do I even begin with this? In 2023 it's impossible to ignore the man that Kanye West has revealed himself to be. He pals around with absolute scum and has expressed many horrible opinions about his fellow humans. I know many music fans no longer feel able to listen to his music, and I can understand that perspective. Personally I'm not much of a boycotter. As far as the music is concerned, this is Kanye's masterpiece. I like his albums up to and including this one. The standout here is Monster. I like most of Nicki Minaj's solo albums, but in my opinion she never spit fire again like she did on her verse here. One of the things this album does really well is to bring in great guest verses. The production and samples are good and most of the tracks slap. One knock against this is the Chris Rock skit on Blame Game, which was funny the first 3 times I heard it, then annoying for the next 15 (yes I own this album). I think overall it still deserves a 5, or at least a 4.5.
Crazy album, copped a hard copy just because.
A generational, genre-defining album. This work set a standard for hip-hop artists to strive for to this day. Despite Kanye's controversies, this album will be considered one of the bests of all time. 9.5/10
This is one of the ones I was most excited to get to. Modern-day Kanye is unquestionably A Mess, but 13 years ago the conversation around him was more "well he's an egomaniac, but *he delivers*", which I assumed could be true, but I didn't listen to his music back then. But yeah this album fucking delivers. I'd drawn "College Dropout" already for this project and liked it, but that didn't fill in a whole lot of context for me. But this one's Post-MTV awards incident, pre-explicit-nazi-shit, and extremely fascinating to listen back to, knowing that his introspection and seeming self-awareness about megalomania and self-destruction in this weren't enough to save him.
First listen to a full Kanye album. Sharp, blunt Lyrics, immaculate productions that some incorporates something organic to all the synthesized and sampled sounds. Such stick in your head hooks. Crazy. So many good tunes on this but POWER, Monster, and Runaway are the standouts.
yes
Ty Spotify for having this album
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy should be considered the beginning of the end, for the overtly sensationalized and outright vilification of Kanye West during that time had resulted in the bubbling up of a wildly opulent doubling down of all the worst facets of his shifting personalities. Swirling in sounds ranging from prog to quiet storm to folk rock to classical and anything that could augment his slow yet rapid descent downward, this is a document of megalomania and braggadocio framed in gold. With everyone involved giving only 100 percent (anything less was considered anathema), this can qualify as a group effort; propping up Kanye whilst shining light on the capabilities of the contributors, most notably Pusha T, Nicki Minaj and Bon Iver. This could be considered sacrilegious but My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy may very well be the last great rock album; for its maximalist, chest-thumping, era-defining music was on par along with the epochal records of decades previous. Kanye would never again devote unyielding attention to his music the way he has here, as his extracurricular activities would soon hold sway and diminish his output with swift precision. But his twisted fantasy has done more than enough to keep up bowled over for a decade and a half and may continue to do so despite his disheartening disintegration. A toast to the douchebags and the assholes and the scumbags and everyone that we know.
An astonishing masterwork of its genre, absolutely stunning. There’s some unfortunate misogyny in a few of the songs but musically and lyrically the level of talent on display here is incredible.
One of the most iconic albums of the 21st century.
Some of the best production ever
It’s great, but at what cost?? #ye
Best Album on this list so far
Nikki is a monster
Very excited to get this album today. It's sad to look back on some of the obvious cries for help in these tracks, but they're a brilliant example of Kanye's next-level production and composition abilities. For me, that talent has always redeemed his poor lyrics.
Listened to this album countless times. what's one more. 5 star album ez
Incredible album, growing on me over the years. Still don't like Chris Rock's part from blame game. From Devil in a New Dress to Blame Game it's more up and down, with each song having great and ok parts. Favorite Tracks: 1-7, 12
Masterpiece by Kanye West.
Goat
Its up there on Yeezy's good albums list
'Power' and 'All Of The Light' are the best songs of the album. Absolute 10/10's for pacing, lyrics, and beat. My only problem is that they aren't longer. 'Dark Fantasy' is good, although not the best of the album. 'Monster' has a good opening sequence, although when it gets to Kanye's verse it drops off. "Put the pussy in a sarcophagus" - KanYE West. Nicki has a weird verse, but it's kinda a bop. FINAL VERSE IS A BANGER THOUGH. 'Runaway''s opening sounds like an MCR song. Why does Chris Rock have a skit. Overall 8/10
Just phenomenal
Set i bakspejlet ville jeg måske have skåret So Appalled og lidt af Chris Rock sketchen hvis det var mig... men altså ethvert album med en banger som All Of The Lights er en automatisk 5er herfra
Bedste hiphop plade nogensinde...?
Still one of the best albums I’ve ever heard.
This is in my top five albums all time. One of my favorites. 9.4/10
Anyone in music production can sample music, but he clearly does it at a level that no one can compare with. My only criticism is I think he raps too much…lol.
Wow
While not Ye's best work, it is up there. Definitely a classic for the Millenials.
Kanye is a moron and a bitch, and I hate to say this but this one is really good.
I liked this album
Especially in Kanye West's case, it's hard to separate the art from the artist. This album is a testament to why it's so hard for people to accept Kanye's (most) recent fall from grace. It showcases a stunning ability to curate sounds to serve a conceptually deep work, touching on a wide range of personal (and personality) and cultural issues. It is a gargantuan achievement that stands the test of time.
A timeless classic at this point. What more is there to say that hasn't been said about this album. The meticulously orchestration over Kanye's playful, often crude , and often pained lyrics makes this a slam dunk 5/5
Kanye deserves all of the hate he gets these days, but I'm a 5/5 going into this one. Great album front to back, with unmatched production and supporting cast. His opus for sure. Looking at the tracklist, the thing I find most interesting is the fact that almost all of the songs push the 4 minute mark. Clearly this wasn't made for radio appeal, and yet, it is regarded in popular culture as a modern classic. --- My relationship with this album is kind of like Cartman with "Come Sail Away;" as soon as I hear the intro sample from Dark Fantasy I can't be satisfied unless I've heard the rest. Dark Fantasy opens with classic Kanye production featuring gospel-like elements interleaved with a bouncing beat and some twinkling piano + strings. Gorgeous flips into a textured beat lead by a fuzzed out guitar and a hook delivered by Cudi. Kanye's vocals are equally fuzzed, but they stand clearly against the background. Some of the more memorable lines in this song: "choke a South Park writer with a fish stick." "I treat the cash like the government treat AIDS, I won't be satisfied til all my niggas get it, get it?" "what's a black beetle anyway, a fuckin' roach?" POWER is the first single I heard off this album. About as self-aware a testament to his megolomaniacal tendencies (I mean "I don't need your pussy bitch, I'm on my own dick"); just watch the music video. Makes use of sample of King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man as the hook. All of the Lights is on the other side of this one, which is the album's second single featuring a hook by Rhianna and various others in support (Fergie, Elton John, Alicia Keys, Drake). Jam even if the drums in the outro sound a bit tinny. This bleeds into Monster, which is probably the most aggressive song on the album; also one of my favorites that features Kanye against Jay-Z, Rick Ross, and Nikki Minaj. Everyone brings it, especially Minaj who steals the show. Beautiful production (big surprise); this would be a jam even without vocals. So Appalled is another star-studded track with one of my favorite Pusha T verses, the flow on "Range Rove', leather roof, love war, fuck a truce. still move a bird like I'm in bed with Mother Goose" is so clean. RZA is the only feature on here that feels a little out of place, but at the same time, his shouting just feels like an escalation of how ridiculous everything is. Devil In a New Dress has always been one of my favorites on here. Beautiful, soulful instrumental meets some more self-aware lyrics (even though it has one particularly corny line "ordered Jerk, she say your are what you eat"). You almost think the track is closing during the interlude, before Rick Ross comes in to clean up. Blame Game is one that I initially wasn't very into, but has grown to be one of my favorite songs on the album. Pretty piano melody with some of the more vulnerable lyrics on love from Kanye. Outro featuring Chris Rock is also pretty great. "Yeezy taught me." Lost In The World into Who Will Survive in America is a strong ending to a great album. Interesting and satisfying choice that the egotistical Kanye West chose to leave the last ~2 minutes of the album to Gil Scott Heron to poetically capture what Kanye and friends sang about for the rest of the album. This album is greater than the sum of its parts, and for that it is an easy 5 / 5. I am fully bought into the idea that this is a modern classic that captures Kanye at his height and before his recent(ish) self destruction. Yeezus is another strong album IMO, but this is pinnacle Kanye. Amazing production top to bottom, great shot selection, and some of his best work behind a mic featuring far fewer awkward lines than he averages on his other works.
Dark fantasy is an awesome start with the choir singing. The POWER>All of the lights section gets me so hyped I love when those songs come on while I'm snowboarding. Monster is a crazy song but it fits so well with the outrageousness of the album. I love the amount of people on So Appalled they were just tossing that song around and each taking a turn throwing in a verse. The whole song of Runaway is a beautiful song but the piano outro in particular really makes the song. The ending of Blame Game is hilarious I think that is Chris Rock which would make sense. Such an incredible album I may have not ever listened to it all the way through which is a shame that I have waited this long. Easy 5.
Easy 5 before listening. This is prime fuckin Ye when he was an actual artist. Definitely one of my favorite rap albums of all time. I FANTASIZE BOUT THIS BACK IN CHICAGOOOOO. 21ST CENTURY SCHIZOID MANNNNNNNN what a dope ass sample. I love All of the Lights but it is just wayyyyy more hype with the interlude before it. Just beautiful. I'M A MUTHAFUCKIN MONSTA! You know that shit is... fuckin' ridiculous. I love RZA. Runaway is probably Kanye's best song. Not my personal fav but it's top 3 no doubt and I'll never be mad if it comes on. The music video also fucks. So beautiful and emotional. Just wish that end piece was like a minute or two shorter lol. Reminds me of Blood on the Leaves where the song is a certified jam and then he does a weird autotune for like 2-3 minutes. I love this album.
Some choice lyrics: What's a black beatle anyway, a fuckin roach? // Choke a South Park writer with a fishstick. // You ever have sex with a pharaoh? I put the pussy in a sarcophagus. The man was on top of it all, the GOAT for a moment. Shame really.
This is just superb. Production is incredible the whole way through, uses the guests really well (in that they really bring something extra without taking over the album). Definitely the best hip hop album we've had so far, so many standout tracks that they don't really stand out. Probably listens better knowing that he's ended up fully going down this rabbit hole. Occasionally gets a bit too crude (the outtro to Blame Game is a bit much for me, no real need for pussy upholstering chat) but it still very much deserves a 5.
This album is timeless
THAT'S WHY HE'S THE GOAT
Amazing project all around, classic. 9/10
Despite Kanye’s obvious problems (which will be different depending on when you’re reading this), My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy has some phenomenal beats, samples, and writing. It’s hard to argue that songs like “Power” and “All of the Lights” aren’t catchy and enjoyable for even people that don’t like rap/hip-hop, and while the second half of the album suffers a little from being less sonically memorable, the writing is still pretty great, and this album will really stand as a testament to Kanye’s talent for making music (and that’s all I’ve got to say about that).
I remember walking back to my house from studies. It was December, snow and cold everywhere. Headphones on my ears while i was listening to music, shuffle playlist. Suddenly I realized there was no one around me. Not a single person walking or cars driving by. World stopped at this moment. I call it moment of silence and peace. And then interlude to All Of The Lights starts playing. That was 13 years ago, yet I remember this like it was yesterday. My masterpiece. 5/5
Great album from a deeply flawed individual.
Near perfect album, have heard it 100's of times, love Kanye
This album, like many of Kanye’s albums, is very important to me and the expansion of my musical taste and knowledge. I haven’t listened to any of his work recently as it is just hard to be excited and into the music when you keep seeing headlines about horrendous shit he’s saying, but I still love this album. I have always found him to be a funny and engaging rapper with some interesting things to say, and a relatable storyteller who has some demons that are a bit more relatable to me than the average artist. Loneliness, mental health, and self sabotage aren’t unique or uncommon in music, but it is nice to have these themes in songs that are otherwise pretty high energy as opposed to the more dour tracks I love that talk about them. Beyond Kanye the performer, Kanye the producer is also huge here. The beats are iconic, you have strong radio hits like All of the Lights and Power alongside more somber tracks like Lost in the World, and some incredible and varied features. This album features perhaps the best Nikki Minaj verse on Monster, Bon Iver’s intro to Lost in the World, and Rick Ross’ luxurious verse on Devil in a New Dress. It certainly has its weak points, I’m not a huge fan of Jay Z on Monster, and Blame Game and the Chris Rock cameo, it really halts the energy moving into the two part finale, but overall, I still put this album up there as one of the greats.
Banger
The quintessential Kanye West album.
He definitely has issues and his rapping is meh, but he makes some serious tunes.
fuck Kanye but this album is a masterpiece
The most self deprecating hip hop album I've ever heard.
This is an amazing album.Almost all the tracks are bangers. The sampling is amazing and so is the instrumentation, especially the piano, leading to some really beautiful moments.Kanye west is not a good person and the album seems to agree with that. There’s this amazing energy to all the songs, they’re all bursting with sorrow and melancholy. All orchestrated perfectly. It’s such a good album.
"My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" is the fifth studio by American rapper and producer Kanye West. Kanye had retreated to Hawaii, a self-imposed exile after interrupting Taylor Swift's MTV video award acceptance speech. The album was mostly recorded in Honolulu with a host of producers (Mike Dean, No I.D., Jeff Bhasker, RZA, Bink, DJ Frank E. and Kanye) and lots of singers (Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Pusha T, Rick Ross, Kid Cudi, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Bon Iver and Elton John). The music is hip hop with a maximalist production incorporating elements of soul, pop, baroque, electra -symphonic sounds and progressive rock. The lyrics deal with his celebrity status, consumer culture, self aggrandizement and idealism of the American dream. The album is recognized as Kanye's best and one the best of the 2010's, debuted at #1 in the US and won the Best Rap Album at the Grammy's. The original album cover showing a naked winged female on top of a naked Kanye was banned in the US. The album begins with Nicki Minaj reading a Roald Dahl poem in "Dark Fantasy." Right away..big production, a lot going on. Original layered, echoing vocals of multiple artists. The music reminded me of NWA for some reason. About decadence and hedoism. The first single "Power" is dark. Repetitious tribal drumming with a Continent Number 6 sample. Chanting females amidst Kanye's rapping. And why not sample King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man." "All of the Lights" has 14 vocalists and Elton John on piano. Horns. Percussion. Drum and bass beats. The vocals give this a pyschedelic feel. It's the narrative of a man with multiple issues including abusing a lover and prison. "Monster" has strings. Anytime you sample Napolean Dynamite, I'm in. Rappers after rappers with Nicki Minaj killing it. "Runaway" features Pusha T and has a great piano motif melody. My favorite music on the album. Addressing public opinion of him. Another highlight of the album is "Lost in the World" with its layered music and vocals. A dance beat. A gospel choir. Great vocals by Bon Iver and Alicia Keys. The album ends with "Who Will Survive in America" with all vocals a sample of Gil Scott-Heron from "Comment #1." A defiant beat and about African-Americans Ill-fated idealism of the Anerican dream. Really, the only song overtly political and not something about Kanye. This is quite an achievement. Each song is an adventure. The album requires and gets better with multiple listens....so much going on...big production, multiple and layered vocals and music, unque sampling selection. It's pyschedelic, freaky and grandiose. Yeah, easily one of the best albums of the 2010's.
In my opinion, one of the most recognisable and influential hip hop albums of the 21st century. Also one of my personal favourites and my favourite Kanye West album. 5/5 DISCLAIMER: Fuck Kanye West and everything he stands for today.
great album
So after listening to College Dropout my first Kanye and being forced to admit it was magnificent, on this journey, I said I'd listen to the other good ones. Well I didn't. But here we are, his more or less universally regarded peak. And yeah, ok wow, it's pretty bloody brilliant. And I actually recognise a song! Power. Although I mainly just recognise the female vocal, (and King Crimson obvs) don't think I'd heard the whole song. Well, this is undeniable. I'm actually looking forward to the next one. Obviously the guy is a walking bin fire now, and some of these lyrics are tiresome and foreshadowed that transition. Thinking back to 2010, were people as obsessed with doing anal, or thinking it's ok to send photo of your dick to someone (unrequited) or choking during sex? I'm sure I can't blame all that on Kanye but it makes me wonder if he helped that shift in society by how massive this album is (despite me never hearing it lol). Also, obvs the clue was in the name, don't take it literally people. Oof, just got to the Chris Rock bit. Kerrrrrrrringe. Bon Iver! That actually dates this a bit haha. Anyway, fucking great album, really. Both immediately accessible and complex enough to reward repeat listens (I imagine).
Great album but kayne went krazy ya know?
Regretfully,
His best album. Fantastic start to finish.
Of course the one day I miss is this album. Classic, torn between a 4 and a 5. I'll give a 5 because I doubt many others will get a 5 on this site.
one of the view albums on this list that i had listened to before. i rated it a 9/10 last time and i’d probably go with a 9.5 this time. crazy consistency with some all time bangers
One of my favorite albums ever. Production is immaculate, the features are fire, and the lyrics are vulnerable. Every song feels like a movie.
Somehow even better than the last Kanye album. Such a shame being a genius made him bonkers.
One of the absolute best albums of all time. A looot of 10/10 songs like Runaway, Power, Monster and so on... Nicki Minaj's best performance and I could go on and on. Everybody should listen to this one.
runaway👌
Not even Kanye’s best
Do you like fish sticks?
Classic Kanye album, maybe the last before he totally lost it?
Déjà écouté mon reuf 9/10
Beside from everything, this is one of those albums that just had an impact on me. A little overrated? Maybe, but I personally love this record. "Dark Fantasy" is one of the best opening tracks I've listen to, and "Runaway" probably my favorite hip hop song ever.
A controversial artist now for obvious reasons. I still really like this album though. I wouldn't say it's my favorite Kanye Album, but it definitely has a lot of bangers. I have almost this whole album in my main playlist so needless to say I like it even if I hate Kanye as a person. Separate art from the artist and all that. This album was so influential in Hip hop that it's kind of insane. There are so many memes around it too. It basically helped start Niki Manje's and John Legend's careers. Niki really killed it on Monster which is crazy because she was a "no-name" at this point (and I don't even like her that much) I stand by my thoughts that songs shouldn't be longer than 6 minutes, but he makes it work on all but runaway (it could have ended way earlier) Runaway did have a short film attached to it though. I am really on the fence about whether this is a low 5/5 for me or a high 4/5. It is probably the best album we have gotten so far and I already had it in my rotation for years. Aside from a Kendric album (not DAMN) or Graduation, I don't know if there are many others that could top this album that could be on this list since it has mostly been mediocre boomer and British rock subgenres.
Blameee Gamee😅
Very good
Aside from the dumb lazy religious track, this album is just legendary.
He might hate Jews, but GADDAM he makes good music
One of the all time great albums. Peak Kanye
Great album - typically, I listen to these at school before students arrive, and I chose to not listen to this one owing to content, but I have listened to it previously and it is charming.
The first Kanye album that I was exposed to, such a great album from start to finish
I looked up "beautiful dark twisted fantasy reddit" to see what people thought about this album. The consensus was almost unanimously in favor of this album: most people said it was great, some went as far as to say it's the best album ever. With some skepticism, I started listening. I was not dissapointed. This was really, really good. A lot of albums start off good or OK and turn pretty crappy as it goes on, but this album just got better as it went on. I'm seriously so impressed. Every song except Who Will Survive In America is now in my liked songs.
Superb album. Too heavy to listen too often, but brilliant nonetheless
Cannot be fucked with. The thing that all other hip hop and pop in the early 2010s proceeded to chase and not catch
This album seems like it what it must be to have bipolar disorder. It's honestly a little reminiscent of the later parts in The Wall. It's a singer songwriter who got so big they started writing arena rock. So many of these songs create huge moments about being unfathomably huge, which at this point is true to kanye's life. And these songs, of course, are hits. All of the Lights, Power, Monster (which really is the most important for introducing us to nikki minaj and cor revealing what jay z thinks monsters are). It's like the best wrestling. It blends the line between real and fiction to the point where it matters more than either. But like in The Wall, and like Soldier Field Presents: The Mountain Goats, there are moments of cracks and they are so heavy when you properly see them. The next line usually comes quickly as if to plaster over them, but it's not quick enough. The biggest glimpse is in the song that was too long to be a hit, maybe intentionally (it is a full 20 seconds before we hear anything besides that singular piano note), but to me the most well regarded in retrospect, Runaway. This song is brutal. It's a lament and a warning of the lot in life he spent the first half of this album glamorizing, but with the knowledge and certainty that it will not be heeded. Not by people dreaming for it, not by the people around him, not by himself. So many lines in this album really make you stop in your tracks when you finally stop grooving long enough to listen, but in this one he desperately pleads for you to hear him, but he knows nobody will. Idk if kanye's a sympathetic figure irl, probably not. I dont know how much of this is truth and how much is presented fiction. But this is a seminal work of art. And fun to listen to throughout. Shame where he ended up, but he told us here exactly what would happen. Dark Fantasy, Power, Monster, and Runaway make the playlist.
One of the best albums ever and one of my favourites of all time. Perfect album.
Rating: 10/10
an absolute masterpiece of hip-hop
Whole album is packed with hits, there’s a reason so many people consider this a masterpiece and I agree with them. When Kanye is on as a producer he is ON
Possibly his best work, which is saying something! Very varied, with features and guest verses all over the shop. Wonderful, even if it should probably lose a star for him going so fully insane in the time since. But, my rules, and I've decided it would have been six if he had stayed sane!
I absolutely love this album, but it’s been tainted for me by Kanye’s appalling behaviour. Too bad.
Begrudgingly enjoyed it. Like a lot haha. Surprised by how nostalgic it was, I didn’t realize how familiar I was with it.
5 star on first listen
Great album.
you gotta be fucking kidding. starting my journey with this. haven't listened since he showed his true colours! don't need to since i'm already very familiar like most people, still probably his best. whole thing is as elegantly maximal as it needs to be. like making a self portrait from your own blood, sweat, tears, and CUM. DO I AGREE WITH IT BEING HERE? yeah, though its legacy will be tainted forevermore.
The time has come to have a discussion on separating the art from the artist. This time last year, I wouldn't have even thought of including something like this on an album like this, one of my favorite Kanye albums. Possibly one of the best rap albums of all time. But recently, as many have seen very publicly, Kanye fell off. But the question I have is can we still separate an artist's current "persona" or actions from work they created many years prior. If it came out that Michelangelo was a part of some weird child trafficking thing for the church, would we still appreciate his work that was done hundreds of years ago? And what is the difference between throwing away old Kanye merch and tearing down a confederate statue? Well, I'd argue the confederates showed their colors almost immediately, whereas it took Kanye at least 6-8 albums before the cracks started showing. So do you stop listening to his current albums? Do you stop listening to all of them? What about when no one is looking? Does something a person says or believes taint their prior work products (Would you live in your house if you found out it was built by a racist contractor)? I'm not sure, and I don't know if there will ever be a good answer, because none of us truly know Kanye. We may claim to, but hearing a few soundbites and clips of damning evidence doesn't seem like enough qualification to say you have a grasp on who this person is. He may be even worse! He also may be suffering from some mental issues, many undiagnosed, and at that point does that outrage turn to pity? Should it? Often, the most prolific artists are suffering from something, and it is through that suffering that their best work comes out. Whether that is a mental issue, a death (like Kanye's mom), or them losing all their sponsors and respect because they spew conspiracy theories and "free-thinking" ideologies. When we were younger, I had some skewed beliefs about certain actors. You could call it Klein Cancel Culture. I don't know if I could name them all, but I know Barbara Streisand off the top of my head, our parents would always speak ill of her, most likely due to her having a more progressive ideology than them. I have a photo of a note my mom wrote and put on the fridge that said something about the birther theory with Barack Obama. But now, actors are actually getting canceled. Kevin Spacey was completely pulled off a movie and replaced with Christopher Plumber to reshoot all his scenes (and was nominated for it). What I have learned and adopted for film, is that the choices, comments, and actions of someone on a production like a film, while not good or redeeming, should not punish the rest of the cast and crew who made that film. When you watch a movie, that person is not the only one in the credits. There are thousands of people who earned a living creating this art, and to cast aside something because of the actions of one, to me seems silly. Did a thousand people create this album? No, music is a little different. But when you have artists like Michael Jackson who are lauded as the greatest of all time and a child molester in the same sentence, then I wonder if people are picking and choosing who they cancel. Is that the best path? By precedent, Michael Jackson's music shouldn't be listened to anymore. Most of his songs sound a little slimy when you think of Billie Jean, Pretty Young Thing, etc. This is all a very long winded way of explaining that I am not cancelling Kanye's old music, in the same way that I haven't really cancelled Michael Jacksons greatest hits. Now, if Kanye were to release a new album this year, I certainly would listen to it, but I would be very weary of what is being said and if it sounds like he is going off the rails then I wouldn't listen anymore. Another way to say, he is on watch now. I also had an interesting conversation a while back with some of my friends who were explaining that it was interesting the industry was cancelling Kanye over his anti-Semitic comments but where was cancel culture anytime there are anti-black comments in rap? Why didn't any of his sponsors cancel him for any of those comments in the past, or when he rushed the stage at the Grammys. Again, cans of worms that I don't think people want to open so they settle for just burying the person. At the end of the day, I truly believe that it just takes common sense. An intelligent person should be able to separate the art from the artist, and if they can't, there is a deeper issue at work. If you want to cancel someone, you are free to. You can pick and choose like society, our parents, friends, and family do, and I don't think you'd be wrong. Just remember that these artists already made their money and they don't even know who you are. Am I a fan of this album? Yes. This is one of my favorite Kanye albums. Am I a fan of Kanye at this point in his life? Absolutely. He was arguably at his PEAK between this and Yeezus. Am I a fan of him now? No, not really. The more I have seen him outside of his music, the more I have a hard time relating to him due to his god complex and attitude towards others around him. I have very little respect for people who don't own up to their actions and take responsibility for the impact they have on those around them. Especially on minds that are more moldable such as younger audiences. There need to be consequences when people say things they shouldn't. Kanye was dropped and fell off for good reason. Should it have been earlier? Maybe. But it is that same free thinking mindset he touts that should allow you the ability to listen to this album and judge for yourself. Favorites: Dark Fantasy, Gorgeous, Power, All of the Lights, Monster, So Appalled, Devil in a New Dress, Runaway, Hell of a Life, Blame Game Album Art: I wonder if it wasn't pixelated would people have cancelled this album for what that picture is depicting.
This is about where I get off the train with Kanye, but man, what a sound. Some of the most intricately structured hip hop you'll ever hear. He omnivorously draws from everything he can get his hands on to make something beyond genres. And yet, despite its complexity, which might come across as the hip hop equivalent of showboating prog rock, the album has an irresistible manic energy that just sweeps you up in its audacious scope. Powerful stuff. Perfect balance of id and ego. Yes, Kanye is insane, but you have to be to have this type of boundaryless vision.
I’ve avoided Kanye because I always thought the dude guy seemed like a massive dick (!). Now I’ve been forced to listen to MBDTF… I listened to the album 3 times 😅 I thought every song bought something unique with a whole bunch of collabs which makes the album a ride start to finish. Especially liked the Aphex Twin sample! Dudes still a nightmare, just rating the music here okay
Runaway
So sad where we are now. This album is epic and brilliant. So lyrically engaging, the beats are strong, and the sampling/creativity is off the charts. The diversity across the tracks is amazing and it is just compelling... track after track. So sad to see where he is now as an artist.
fantastic album, really pushed the envelope on what rap shouuld be. it sucks that kanye sucks so much.
One of my favourite albums!
At the time of this writing, a lot has been going on with Kanye. Obviously a troubled dude, and even as someone who's pretty good at "separating the art from the artist," even I've had trouble compartmentalizing. That being said, I'm gonna leave that aside for the purposes of my review. I think few would argue against this album being Kanye at his absolute peak, and given his run up to this point, what a lofty peak it was. There's not really a weak song on this entire album, and it was one of the few that upon first or second listen, you could kind of just tell that it would be important and enduring (ya know, unless Kanye can somehow further torch his legacy/reputation). Really truly a masterpiece. Standouts: The Entire Fuckin Thing, Honestly
It's a masterpiece. Feel off giving two 5s in a row. RIP Kanye, we miss you
surprisingly good. I had not given this one a listen before. Really solid album from the ever-polarizing Ye.
Obviously, regarding this album by the present issues with this artist is difficult, like viewing MJ without considering the spectre of pedophilia. That said, POWER is one of the snatchiest hooks of the last decade. Most of the rest of this album is a similarly amazing production level. I see some similarities between this album and Dark Side of the Moon. That seems to be the proper iconic parallel for this album for its day. Hard to swallow the fascism, this one is.
Fuck Kanye. This album slaps but fuck Kanye.
Kanye is a horrible person, but this album is a masterpiece.
Done
Loved it..loved the beat...the lyrics....the features...the album was fantastic to listen to and loved listening to it and added to favorite albums
There's a lot of grief for me now listening to this album. It was like a lightening bolt that turned me on to what hip hop could be and shaped how I listened to music at a crucial point in my life. With Kanye's recent antics, including doubling down on antisemitism, blaming black people for remaining slaves, and refusing treatment for his mental health issues, listening to his music now is complicated. This album sees Kanye exercising his most maximalist impulses. He is like a mad scientist overseeing the various production elements. He also has the ability to get career defining performances out of his collaborators. Nikki Minaj's verse on 'Monster' is still probably her best work to date. The way this album flows together and explores the role of a black man in a white dominated society is incredible and unrepeatable. This album is the apex in a very interesting and groundbreaking career. An as addendum, today, December 1, 2022, I finished listening to this album only to find out that Kanye had gone on the Alex Jones show to say that the Israeli government was sabotaging his custody battle, to say that he was tired of people calling nazis evil, and then he said that he liked hitler. This will be the last time I listen to anything by this man. It’s a damn shame.
Verassend goed & gevarieerd.
Kanye, or I guess Ye, is of course all kinds of problematical now, or perhaps “extra” problematical would be the way to put it. At this album’s point though he could still be thought of as a provocateur. And this titanic hip hop opus served to prove the method and yes, genius, behind the mad antics. And it has all the incessant bravado and seemingly inescapable misogynistic attitudes of its genre but even these are tempered here with humor and self-awareness. I don’t think he’s matched it before or since, and sadly it seems truly dubious whether we’ll ever see this Kanye return.
Still great
It sadly holds up even better with current circumstances where the darkness of the album actually comes true. Great songs with personal lyrics one of his best works
Easy 5 star, this thing is a masterpiece
Can’t be random I got this album this week lol. I was not into Kanye in 2010. I knew him from the songs that would be on the radio or MuchMusic but had never listened to any of his albums. I picked this one after hearing Ryan Davis (RIP) talk about this on the GiantBombcast podcast. His pitch was this album was justifying his craziness over the last year. This is also one of the last albums I’ve purchased on CD (I think I had later a Black Crows greatest hits once when I rented a car with no auxiliary port) This is a massive accomplishment. It’s so aggressive and angry, and while the man might not seem it now, it’s all directed inward. So many standouts but the one that has stuck with me over the last 12 years is Hell Of A Life. That bass hook and piano(?) run are just incredible. I really got into the album in February 2011 when I was in Vancouver, where it should be completely snowed in but it was mostly just foggy. I am always immediately transported back to that time and place whenever I put this song on. I’m going to have to come to terms with these landmark records by problematic people as I get deeper into this list. I have Funeral by Arcade Fire I know will be coming up I’m going to have to tackle. Can we separate art from the artist? I don’t know if we can. I listen to Michael Jackson now and I feel guilty for liking it. In spite of this, I would still be putting this one on my top 10 albums of all time. It is what it is.
5 star album, 1 star idiot
Terrible timing to be giving this a listen, but it's unfortunately a perfect album...
5 records in a row that are basically perfect. This is the last of it. It's super sad what's happened to him since. But this record is amazing.
:(
Kanye's best album? Hard to say
Polarizing album, I like it a lot
He had a great producer
no cap, u r in for something super
Goat album
the ultimate game changer 10/10
What a way to restart the project. Although not my favourite Kanye album, it's still probably his best, and practically perfect. Really funny in places, catchy, good for a workout, good for introspective thought, good for a party... it's just really good. First run of 5 tracks is incredible, next three v good but not for me, RUNAWAY, and a solid stretch to close.
the second half of this album made me levitate
Separate the person from the music. This is a great album. Kanye is a bad person though.
Not listened to any rap or hip hop before but this was amazing and the production was fantastic. An essential record.
I’m completely biased but this is like my top 5 albums of all time. Runaway and devil in a new dress are masterpieces in music. Kanyeezy you did it again, you a genuis.
Jeezey kableezy, Mr. Yeezy
Kanye 2024.
Baby I got a plan runaway as fast as you can
Epic
"Can we get much higher?" Probably not. The production and sampling alone is worth 5/5.
More than a decade after its release MBDTF still stands as a monolith of modern hip hop… Fuck it, modern music in general. If released today it would be just as fresh, progressive and impressive as it was 12 years ago. Best: Dark Fantasy / POWER / All of the Lights / Runaway
Kanye best album, and a valid candidate for the best album of the 2010s this is a masterpiece, filled with gems of songs like Devil in a new dress and runaway. Monster has some of the best rap features ever with nick minaj giving a once in a lifetime verse. I love this album
Kanye’s best work without a doubt. The production on this is impeccable. The features make this special. This is where his craziness and his genius worked for him the best. Every song on this album is good at minimum. Most of them are great. One of the best hip hop albums ever and a fantastic one in general. 9.7/10
A strong epic album - more grand and self indulgent than his debut - but it’s way more mature in a strange way. With his self obsession in a way Kanye transcended himself - along the while making great music.
He may be a complicated figure, but damn this is amazing music
A messy, bloated masterpiece from a truly unique artist at the top of his game. This really is Kanye at his most open, self-aware, and remorseful before he entered full dickhead era
Increíble! 100% recomendado
the ultimate pump up experience. do not listen unless you're ready to break something or fuck something.
Qu'est ce qu'il faut pas lire..
Perfection
One of my all time favorites
best songs: all 10/10
Fuck Kanye in 2023 but this is an all-timer. 5-stars just for Minaj's verse on Monster
One of the best albums ever made. Period. Across all genres. Like it or not, this is on par with Pink Floyd or Beatles for great albums, not just with hip hop. The title track is as progressive as rap can be, the features are iconic, his production on this one may be his best. Captivating from beginning to end, and for me, the best he has ever done it.
What an artistry! This is no ordinary hip hop album, this is a music album! Kanye is going places that I have never seen and imagined in this genre ever before! This album is proof that Kanye is just one of those guys that really can pull off anything, no matter how obscure or unorthodox the idea might be
This is the album that actually got me into Kanye West. I wasn't really a big hip-hop fan before this came out. Now it's one of my favorite genres and I give credit to this album for that. This album is such an adventure. It feels so grand and alive. There's just something special about it. It's even a bit nostalgic now. I still love this record just as much today. 5 stars without hesitation.
Light to decent 6. Prefs: Dark Fantasy, Gorgeous, POWER, All of the Lights, Monster, So Appalled, Devil in a New Dress, Runaway, Hell of a Life, Blame Game, Lost in the World Moins pref: le monologue de Blame Game.
Runaway is perfection. Samples from all over the place. Love a bit of king crimson in there. Annoyingly good from a personality who is often insufferable.
Good album! Touches on themes of decadence, self-indulgence, etc. One thing I will always give him credit for is his ability to take a critical look at himself and lay it bare.
I hate the person but the sounds are so good, I can't resist.
This album probably has the best production I have ever seen in a hip hop album. So much care and attention has been made to each second, which is especially incredible considering the lengths of each song. Versatile samples and moods and many collabs keep each song new and exciting. On top of that, there is top-of-the-notch songwriting, with incredible performances by not just Kanye but most of the collabs. You have influences from many genres: RnB, classical, psychedelic, rock, folk, and jazz among others. Dark Fantasy: Straight away blowing us away with the grand production of this album. A repetitive invitive chorus that comes in and out seemingly randomly, even when you think the song is over. Lyrics show first egotistical signs, but there are also some funny and trippy lines, showing us we're in for a psychedelic experience as well. Gorgeous: Loving the Hendrix-esque guitar playing, the hazy voice filter, and the catchy chorus. Great rhymes and flow here but damn he really bitches a lot about how underrated he is, doesn't he? Songs fly by despite their length. POWER: Gives me goosebumps with the crazy production. Grand and confident. Creative use of the King Crimson sample. But he's mostly talking about how great he is again, what the hell? Is this every song? I like how he's able to blend spoken word and rnb singing styles so seamlessly during verses. Satisfying outro envelops you. All of the Lights: Back to back with another candidate for the best song of 2010. An incredible grand collaboration, super anthemic and powerful. I really enjoy the imagery. This and this next song has my favorite verses by collabs, even better than their own songs. Notable examples are Fergie in this and Nicki Minaj in the next. Monster: A fierce and creepy psychedelic track. Love the collabs here again, the overly dramatic styles fit them well, and I wish more songs were like this. I actually started to like Nicki Minaj for the first time, but honestly besides Super Bass this is probably her best performance. So Appalled: Yeezus, another major collab. Another eery track, the samples capture the hopeless dystopian mood and images. Love how defeated all of the rappers sound, especially in the closing "fucking ridiculous" lines. Devil in a New Dress: My personal favorite track and the most psychedelic. Love the dreamy voice and strings samples, with some beautiful accompanying lyrics by Kanye. Huge fan of the fuzzy Hendrix-esque guitar in the bridge, providing necessary peace and ambiance. The sudden end was nice, pulling the audience out of the trance. Runaway: The 9 minute ballad centerpiece. Still manages to fly by. My favorite verses by Kanye are here. Super emotional and powerful yet again. Really takes his time with this piece, never rushing anything. Hell of a Life: Sounds like it came off his previous album 808 and Heartbreak. Somehow the weakest yet still a great song with creative samples and synths, clever lines and subject matter, and superb production efforts. Blame Game: Another fantastic heartbreaking ballad, and I'm a fan of the strings. Huge fan of that long ending. Lost in the World: A song both fitting for Bon Iver's style and as a followup to 808 and Heartbreak. Cool and catchy with a powerful closer that flows into the closing spoken word track reminiscent of the 60s civil rights movements, with a cool afrobeat in the background. Grand way to end the album, although the clapping is pretty funny considering his ego.
I don't know what it was in 2010, but I passed on this when it came out after 1/2 a listen. And I really enjoyed Kanye's earlier albums. Putting aside his modern day antics and terrible output, this album missed me and it shouldn't have. Production is incredible, lyrics are interesting, guests are incredible, only 1 track wears out its welcome even though many are very lengthy. I've got a couple saved new classic tracks out of it.
Ego = Genius. At least here. This is the record where Ye started to lose it on a personal level, and yet what a gain for music. Yeezus is leaner, crispier and strikes harder than MBDTF, but the latter is certainly the richest, catchiest and most sprawling of the two propositions Tracks such as "Runaway", with that simple yet insanely efficient piano part, "Power", with its soulful African vocals, "All Of The Night", with its maddeningly sinuous horns, or "Monster", that mean psychotic banger with that killer featuring by Nicki Minaj, are the stuff of legend. Kanye West is, simply put, the Gertrude Stein of hip hop. What he does sometimes doesn't make a lot of sense at first, like with those weird lyrics, or that strange flow--besides, who can sample *both* Mike Oldfield and Gil Scott-Heron in the same frigging album? But the more you pay attention to those sorts of details and how they intricately woven into the whole, the more they can affect you, at least during that run of classic albums from the early 10s. And just like Stein, that old modernist writer of days yonder, Ye had a keen, very *American*, sense of how to promote his weird stuff to the wider world. This is how he will be remembered in the decades to come. As an American oddity. Because, let's face it, right? Americans are all a little crazy, aren't they? Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 911 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 49 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 25 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 19
Kanye’s masterpiece. Probably the greatest record of the 2010s. An astonishing record, almost too much to listen to, it’s maximalist sound wrecking havoc on the senses. All the players bring their A game (stand up Nicki Minaj for best verse on the album/best verse of that year) to create a truly compelling album of considerable depth, Kanye putting his innermost, darkest feelings into art, reshaping the world around him as all truly inspirational artists do. Compelling, urgent, essential. Kanye is a genius.
Exceptional
Regrettably still amazing
LP
Very nice
samples Avril 14, instant 5 stars.
Rap muy melódico. Muy muy chulo
Brought me back to my college days when I'd listen to this album on repeat.
What an album. You wish he'd taken his own advice when you hear Kanye struggle with the trappings of fame and how he treats women. Definitely a separate art from artist album
þetta er með betri plötum sem ég hef hlustað á, no skips, allt geðveik lög, topp 3 kanye plata
Can we get much higher? No one bread should have all that flour
5/5 I will say it's a little front-loaded, and I don't think that Blame Game needs to be 7 minutes just to hear Chris Rock talk about Yeezy teaching women how to sex good. Hell of a Life sampling 21st Century Schizoid Man is real good too. It's all really good. Like really really good.
Iconic best of the 2010s rap album or any album at all. Kanye’s current persona makes it harder to revisit. Still hits though and it’s fun to go back to.
I'm no fan of Kanye West's public personality, but this album was great!
The peak of Kanye's genius. Before he went full spiral. Love this album. Fav Tracks: "Dark Fantasy" "Runaway" "Power" "All Of the Lights" "Monster"
Uma das obras primas de YE.
I mean this has been one of my favorite albums since it was released. Almost every song on here is a beast (or, dare I say, Monster) in its own way. The beats, the rapping, the features all just work so well and create a masterpiece. 10/10
I have mixed feelings about this album, mainly because I associate it with stuff that was happening in my life around the time it was released. But all up, it's a good album. Kanye's got some issues and he's working through them, as all his best albums are centred on. "Monster" is a stand-out track, and yes, the Nicki verse is epic - but there are plenty of other great tracks. Why, let me tell you of the time a boy made me a mixtape that ended with "Blame Game".
Best Song: Gorgeous. Obviously Runaway stands out, but Gorgeous feels like it has Kanye in his rarest form. Lyrically might be the best of the album, and the whole seems tense and ready to attack. Worst Song: So Appalled. The chorus is not good enough to repeat as often as they do. The song also suffers from having a somewhat sleepy production and trying to immediately follow Nicki's verse on Monster. Overall: Expertly produced. The beats are fantastic, the samples scratch itches you didn't know you had, nearly every feature works. Kanye even has his lyrical ducks mostly in a row, but still throws in the occasional goofball bar.
runaway as fast as you cannnnnnnnnnnnn
Amazing production. Very vibey. The first Kanye i ever heard. Very unique and inspirational
This album was the third and final Kanye album to blow my mind. It's so maximalist and orchestral. Nobody else could have made it. And every track is a single. From Pink Floyd as hip hop banger about self loathing, Runaway, to let's launch a whole career and make Jay Z look part time of Monster, to the vocoder choral genius of Lost in the World. Everything has something. If I wanted to hate it, there is the overlong Chris Rock skit 'Yeezy taught me' thing, and possibly the early signs of the mania that would harm his music over the next decade. But that's clutching at straws. This is a one off, an insanely ambitious album that transcends it's genre.
A guy invited you to his place. Apparently, he wanted to show something, something "special," something that he wanted to show everyone. That guy is not the most decent guy that you know. You recall the incident that he made during a gathering. He interrupted a congratulatory celebration for a girl, shouting that another girl is "the best". That incident either kindled or intensified the fiery feud between him and that particular girl. He stayed in another place most of the time after the incident, working on something. Now he's done, and he'll show the product to people. All of your thoughts were dissolved - at least temporarily - the second you entered his home. At first you can't make out a single thing, because at every corner and at every edge there is FLASH. It was a set of colossal artworks that apparently expressed his thoughts and feelings. Everywhere you look, there is something to be astonished to. Your eyes can barely have a break. After a while, you get exhausted of it. The flashes are mostly gone, but the remaining ones are still incredibly jaw dropping. Now, you began to chew the dense and complex artwork. While he DID worked hard for that something, it won't be there if not for the help of a lot of people -- most of which have BIG names. What is this? You think. Why does he want to show this excessive and self indulgent display? It's admittedly impressive, even jaw-dropping. The way the art was made, or PRODUCED, was awesome. But you couldn't help but be torn between judging the art and the artist. Of course one can judge the art without while not taking note of the artist, but this art seems to scream the artist's name in every corner. The almost immature and egoistic way the message or the thoughts were presented isn't very easy to ignore. But perhaps that's what it's all about: presenting one's ego, topped with enough bling-blings to obscure it's stench. Isn't that what hip-hop, or even art in general, is all about? Perhaps it's too naïve to say that. Fortunately, you didn't know a lot about that guy. and maybe even if you did, you'll still at least enjoy this giant one-inch-thick-icing-coated cake of an effort.
I did not realize that this album is already more than 10 years old.. Still sounds very good to me: lots of strong pop songs and very coherent (as in an album-album). It might be 10-15 minute too long but still a clear 5* for me.
Even better on vinyl, one of the greats. (Despite how much Kanye sucks as a person.)
I don't really like listen to rap, but Kanye continues to surprise me on this list. Everything on here has its place, and it gels! ... The only real miss here is 'Monster', and I suspect it is a 'I really don't like Nicki Minaj at all'. Given this isn't my genre, I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt here. The fact that I'm even considering a 5 here (for a rap album!) means it's gotta take it
Fantastic album. Still hate Kanye as a human
You're spoiling me, 1001 gen. This is a nearly flawless Hip Hop album that combines excellent performances, top tier instrumentals, and an appreciation to the artistry of music. On top of all that, this was probably the album that helped me truly get into Hip Hop music, so thanks ye. Favorites: Dark Fantasy, POWER, So Appalled, Devil In A New Dress, Runaway
Dark Fantasy is great. Sadly I mostly know Kanye through his public persona, which is "complicated". The language in rap often makes me feel like it's not a space meant for me, but the music is enjoyable. I was also surprised at the variety and consistent freshness of album's songs.
GOAT.
can we get much higher
good ass album very cool kanye
Legit can't believe how much I enjoyed this album, feels like peak kayne. Exceptional
It feels so different when every single song absolutely bangs. Damn. Very few of the songs miss the mark. And Runaway might just be one of the best songs. Period.
Kanye's most accessible masterpiece. Not as experimental as Yeezus or 808s, obviously a 5.
The GOAT Kanye album and one of the best rap albums of all time. So many strong songs all throughout. 9/10.
I'm not in love with Kanye as a person, but goddamn if his peak as an artist wasn't absolutely incredible. This album is just song after song of incredible samples and production with excellent lyrics over it. Consistently good throughout the entire album, and often absolutely great 5/5
Just a classic Ye album
-top 1 album openers of all time One of my fav moments in this album is jay z being asked to write a verse about monstrosity of fame and licherally just going Frankenstein, Godzilla, Dracula....guy has no range 'so much head I woke up in sleepy hollow' I don't know if this album has aged a bit because some albums have extraterrestrial levels of production these days but it's still great
Classic
One of the best albums ever created. From top to bottom banger after banger.
the most Kanye album ever
First of all, I’m not gonna act like I’m not going to give it a straight 5. I believe this is one of the great highlights of this century and a record for the generations, so there is that. Is this the best work by Ye? Arguable but there are at least another 4 records that are up for title. Is this my favorite Ye album? No, I have an emotional attach to The College Dropout for that matter. is this his last great work? NO, he kept it up for another 8 years. Is Donda a work as focused as this? No, to me he lost it after KSG. There is so much around this one that’s worth the mention, how this was Kanye’s redemption after the deplorable Taylor incident, the cringe in some of the lyrics, the effort in Pusha’s verse, the complete triumph of Nicki’s verse, the laughs we had with Jay Z’s one, the stupid but somehow guilty pleasure of the Chris skit, the memes, the samples, Fantano’s review, the aesthetics… It all shows how influential this was but the only reason for that is the music. Yes, Kanye is very limited singing and not as good MC as he thinks, but the production and innovation of this one goes really to new horizons, almost everyone is at their top game for this one and Ye really did come up with a cohesive and really impressive album. As I said one of the great recordings of our times. I’m always up for a toast for this one.
Guess I'll go ahead and rate this before it gets any worse. Kid Rock and Kanye back-to-back is one hell of a stretch. Nonetheless, this album is phenomenal. When a song as good as So Appalled is the low point of the first 9 songs for me, you know this is generational. Production is so over-the-top but it's beautiful and it works. AOTL interlude, something I often forget about in the album, is so well done. Two of the best feature verses ever in my opinion from Nicki and Ross. Like all of my favorite Kanye albums, there are some low points - the Chris Rock feature on Blame Game (rest of the song is good) wears out its welcome about a minute in, even if I found it hilarious the first time I heard it, and I still don't really like Hell Of A Life, even if the interpolation of Iron Man is pretty cool. Still, this is one of the most complete albums I've ever heard - there's a reason this is almost universally considered one of Kanye's best. Maybe he needs another isolated retreat to Hawaii. Already Saved: Dark Fantasy; Gorgeous; POWER; All Of The Lights; Devil In A New Dress; Runaway; Lost In The World Saved After Listening: Monster, So Appalled, Who Will Survive In America*
10/10 masterpiece fav kanye album game changer I could die listening to runaway
Oh, the dream. Best Kanye album. I love it. So many bangers. So much creativity. Amazing production. Devil in a New Dress is my fave.
Love this album to death. Sure, some songs have problems, like Jay on monster or Kanye naming different kinds of lights on all of the lights, just sort of goofy. But Kanye has some of his best bars of all time the production is immaculate, the other songs are so strong as to make it a full score for me in spite of some glaring flaws.
5/5 would listen again
An albums of 4 and 5 star songs = 5
I love this album
Melhor album do kanye
5 out of 5! a masterful piece of music history!
Funny weird really really good
My favourite album of all time. The songs are composed perfectly with amazing samples and great production from Kanye. The features are great. The range and variety of the songs from absolute bangers to more emotional ones. And runaway with the piano section is just the best!!!!
Not a fan of Kanye but this was solid back in the day and album still holds up.
Trying to forget what Kanye has been up to lately, this album is a perfect hip hop album. It feels almost like progressive hip-hop, or like a rock album with rappers on it. The deliberate production choices all added to it, like the decision to slightly saturate the whole thing.
Masterpiece
A great album with great production and some not-so-great rapping at times. The songs where Kanye is vulnerable and not overly braggy (eg. are really game-changing (eg All of the Lights, Runaway, Lost in the World). The other stuff seems childish and disingenuous (Hell Of a Life, Devil in a New Dress). And of course there are some which are in the middle but are also bangers, such as POWER and Monster.
One of Kanye's best the production is top class
It's a shame Kanye has to be such an awful human being as this album is genuinely great. Still, at least we've still got Nikki Minaj's verse on Monster... oh no. But at least we've still got Jay-Z's verse on Monster... oh no.
Grandiose, over the top, so many high moments. It is such a great record, truly his best. Yet it still drags somewhat near the end.
Yeah, he does have a nice flow. Great sounds, diverse as hell. Huge. Hilarious. Knew a few songs from cultural osmosis (I was an annoying rock purist as a teen) but this is connecting across the board! Modern classic. Favourite tracks: Dark Fantasy, Gorgeous, Devil In A New Dress, Runaway, Hell Of A Life, Blame Game
8 - maybe his best album?
It's been almost 10 years since Kanye had his meltdown and lost his powers as a rapping and producing hit machine. It's amazing to reflect at just how good he was across this run of LPs. For many this one is the best, while I wouldn’t quite go that far I can see why others do. It has flawless flow from track to track and features his best production work. It's got hit songs, amazing features and consistently strong rapping from Kanye himself. It feels like a pop album in so many ways, but with so much textural and lyrical detail effortlessly embedded within every moment. Few albums are as iconic as this one.
It’s good. I’m not sure it’s great. I would have given it 3.5 based on my first listen and know it is the sort of thing that will grow on me with repeated listens but I’m not sure I wanna give him the royalties
I genuinely think I prefer Yeezus over MBDTF. I’m gonna die at the stake for this take. Idk I think half of my appeal to Kanye is when he takes risks. This isn’t that, But MDBTF is his magnum opus no doubt. The production is top tier, and I think it’s up there Kanye wise lyrically too. Idk I’m not the biggest Kanye fan. Just MO. Also this album is a lot less nostalgic than I thought it’d be. Again I’ve never been a big fan so maybe that’s why. But you can’t go wrong with Runaway, Devil in a new dress, or all of the lights.
God just god of course it would be a random day which I need to lock in that one of the greatest albums of the 2010s comes on. What can’t be said about this album. Marked a full turning point in Kanye’s career and has been one he has chased for years and hasn’t gotten back. Pure artistry. Listen to the lyrics on Runaway. It’s so telling of a story and truly allows you to live in the realm of avoidance. Finding oneself is what this is about can we get much higher. This is the question. Push yourself forward. There is tons of corn here tho monster is so wack but All of The Lights ,Power and DIAND these are the most defining tracks of hip hop ever. Everyone wants to chase this level of music and success but can’t. Despite all that, I will always go to bat for this album because The version of Kanye that made this wanted to create art and be his true self until he went too far and ruined it. We can all sit and pretend that this was the end truly. Fuck kanYe but thank you Kanye West for brining this into the world before then.
