I am somewhat familiar with Marvin Gaye, though the songs I know are not on this album. The only song I knew from this album was Let’s Get It On.

The frustration with Gaye's album is how singles-focused they are -- when they're good, they're GOOD

If sex were music, it would be Marvin Gaye. This is probably him at his sexiest. Also the title track is like a jumpscare if you forget that it's on this album. Solid album, definitely worth a listen.

A good soul record. The title track is legendary but I'm always fond of its sequel that most people don't know. I really like this one. Maybe my favorite Marvin Gaye so far.

Perfect album!

I prefer protest Marvin Gaye to sexy Marvin Gaye, But this was a relaxing listen. After having sung all of those songs, I really hope that he did get it on and it was worth it.

To state the obvious Marvin Gaye has a beautiful voice. Hard not to like and a great Sunday album. Only slight reservations about being a bit one pace with 2 tracks ostensibly the same on 30 mins. What a nice sound though. Low 4/5 (7/10)

Play anyone this album and the descriptive word that's likely to come to their head first is "smooth." Damn this is a smooth record. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone with a pulse who finds it objectionable. Marvin Gaye sounds deeply in love and out of that made one of the all time most romantic LPs of all time. Its a shock when it ends after only 30 minutes but I admire Gaye not stretching beyond the hits.

Its a solid to high 4 for me, could have been higher if it covered a bit more ground I find it a bit one note, even though i do enjoy the one very well done note

Not sure why all the hate for this, it’s a landmark album for both funk and soul and explores some complex themes about sex, love and longing, particularly given the context of Marvin’s upbringing and abuse. On the surface, there’s an extremely sensual sound that no doubt influenced more modern R&B, but whereas that took it at face value, running with the sound alone, Marvin’s sincere lyrics give the all important balance and depth that much of that genre lacks. It was also a controversial album given the subject matter and was deemed as a huge risk for Motown to even release it but it gained both critical and commercial success and showed a markedly different side to Marvin following his much more well known and politically themed album _What’s Going On_

I enjoyed this album a lot! Classic tracks, well produced. Been getting a few soul records in a row this week, and I think Isaac Haye's Hot Buttered Soul is a better overall album, but Marvin is always great

Not my typical genre but the quality of this album shines through. Hard not to like it.

De esta leyenda del Soul sólo había escuchado su aclamado What’s Going On, un albumazo en toda regla de Soul Progresivo. Este es su posterior LP y presenta un estilo más directo de Smooth Soul, con perfectos grooves sensuales para bailar con mi amada. Como cantante, Gaye es todo lo que se puede pedir, tenía un rango sublime y una capacidad expresiva que le llevaba de la máxima suavidad a una desgarradora pasión en cuestión de segundos. Por otro lado, no es un proyecto tan ambicioso instrumentalmente como lo es What´s Going On, pero tampoco es lo que necesita, pues son canciones que piden un acompañamiento en su punto y que permita moverse como les salga del cuerpo a los oyentes. El tema de apertura es legendario y creo que prácticamente todo el mundo ha escuchado la intro, no es de extrañar que se haya usado tanto para memes, Don Peake hizo que la guitarra pareciese ligar con nosotros… Es una canción apasionada como poco y un clásico innegable. From this soul legend I had only heard his acclaimed What’s Going On, a full-on masterpiece of progressive soul. This is his follow-up LP, and it presents a more straightforward smooth soul style, with perfect sensual grooves for dancing with my beloved. As a singer, Gaye is everything one could ask for — he had a sublime range and an expressive ability that could take him from the utmost softness to raw, heart-wrenching passion in a matter of seconds. On the other hand, it’s not as ambitious instrumentally as What’s Going On, but that’s not what it needs to be, since these are songs that call for just the right accompaniment and allow listeners to move however their bodies feel like moving. The opening track is legendary, and I think practically everyone has heard its intro — no wonder it’s been used so much in memes. Don Peake made the guitar sound as if it were flirting with us… It’s nothing short of a passionate song and an undeniable classic. I don’t think the rest of the tracklist reaches that level, but it shouldn’t be overlooked either. For example, Gaye’s lyrics and vocals on If I Should Die Tonight are truly powerful and create a cinematic scene — something that happens more than once on the LP, such as in the sad yet realistic closing track: Just To Keep You Satisfied. I think it was a mistake on my part to listen to it during the day — I feel these are all songs that would hit harder while staring romantically out the window on a rainy night… But I had no other time, and it’s summer, so it’s not raining at all. Jokes aside, the album, though short, ends up feeling somewhat monotonous; it doesn’t have the versatility of its predecessor, and there aren’t as many memorable moments, at least after a first listen. Even so, it’s a more than solid record for Gaye that puts his immense talent as a singer right in front of our eyes. Smooth as silk

Mercy mercy me I need a cigarette after that. Let's Get It On has the wonderful quality of having a beat that makes for steady, purposeful hip thrusting.

Get it on, the quintessential fuck song, puts the album at a 3 by itself (plus have a sequel that's message is "keep fuckin'", pure genius). But I really should say making love, because although the topic is base, Marvin's sultry, emotional voice caresses the topic and the musical composition is such vulvety perfection.

Always felt he is overrated but I was wrong tried to listen to most albums and its good but nothing that made my life change. This album specifically has a special groove that lasts the whole album with a vibe thats tough to equal. I dont love the falsetos yet feel this is a top album for that genere

Are you kidding! Let's Get it On. First note grabbed my full attention as it should. Soulful Marvin. Loved it.

Marvin Gaye has really grown as an artist for me through this list. His second album on the list for me, and this is a solid one, though perhaps not absolute stellar. Though 'Let's Get It On' might be one of the most well known and overplayed love songs (along a few other songs from Marvin), it's still one hell of a tune. And his singing really makes it shine! The other songs on the album don't stand out as much, but I have to say I really enjoyed most of them. 'If I Should Die Tonight' for example has such a good melancholic chord progression that just works great with the guitars and Marvin's singing. Though lacking of hits, and certainly an album that lyrically feels quite "thirsty", I liked this a lot. Perhaps not an album that I will come back to instantly or remember as a particularly good one, but I enjoyed listening to it a whole lot more than a many other albums on this list. Think I will let that be the decider for the album rating!

The album is good, but it’s hard to ignore the over saturated love R&B ballads on it. While they sound great (it is MARVIN GAYE), some songs can feel way too overly cheesy and cringey. Other than that, this is a good record.

I’m pretty sure a couple of people were conceived because of this album. Just a hunch. Weirdly enough, my man problem with this album is that it’s too, uhm, sexy. As someone who really enjoyed What’s Going On, this one felt less smooth and more groovy. Honestly, at times, this really felt like bedroom music, which makes causal listening feel awkward. God forbid you don’t listen to this while doing it and instead driving home from work. The Gowanus Expressway doesn’t need to hear that woman on You Sure Like To Ball moan. Outside that though, it’s still Marvin Gaye. When Marvin hits, he hits and sets the standard for r&b to come. It’s not as close to perfection as What’s Going On for me, but this one still raises to the occasion… Yeah, that’s a bad joke. Let’s Get It On is excellent music to make pesto pasta to, which I’m pretty sure is exactly what Marvin had in mind. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the time between “Let’s Get it On” and the reprise three tracks later was, ingeniously, the average length of time it takes for the average pot of lightly salted water to boil on a standard gas hob. I could go track by track – saying things about the pure and agonising drama of the staccato opening to “If I Should Die”, the richness of the string arrangements throughout, even the bittersweet album closer – but isolated moments aren’t really what makes this record so special. The movement of it – rising, falling, halting, waiting, driving, teasing, delivering – is. Yep. It’s excellent to cook to.

4/5. After reading some context in regards to Marvin's life, these songs are much more powerful. It is a therapeutic process of a man recognizing his worth and that his past trauma does not define him. You almost can hear that he is not talking to anyone in particular, but rather using his voice and music to move through these emotions. As far as the full album goes, it's powerful and he takes his time with each one, but it does slow down way too much at certain times that takes away from the experience. Zeggen dat dit album wat gladjes is, is een aardig understatement. This is now the 3rd album by Marvin Gaye that I've listened to as part of this project. That's all of them from the list. The music is soft and gentle and very soulful. I can't listen to that all the time. Too much of that sweet enamel gives me a toothache. But in the right mood and in between, I really like the music. 4/5

Great album, but I like the soul stuff more than the 80s stuff

Ooohh so sweet. Takes me into a time warp of a mid-70s summer groove. The sound is perfection. Mr. Gaye is buttery smooth and so so horny. I had to laugh when I thought “this one track is beautiful, soulful - what’s it called?” and it was “You Sure Love to Ball.” Yeah you do.

Marvin’s sexual prowess on full display, a full half hour album dedicated to fucking, basically. The funk pops right off the page with this one, and Marvin’s vocal range is incredible. The backing band are on point for the entire album, and it’s a true joy. I wouldn’t say my favorite album of his, but a classic indeed.

It's the title track and the only Marvin Gaye I know, but Let's Get It On! Gaye's voice is obviously fantastic and this album wraps you up like a warm blanket. It's a little slow for my taste but it's definitely a nice listen. Instrumentally this is a nice album as well. It's got tight drums, funky wah-wah guitar riffs, sax, and piano parts a-plenty. And clocking in at about 32 minutes, it's a perfect taste of everything. Standouts for me were: "Let's Get It On," "Keep Gettin' It On," "Distant Lover," and "You Sure Love To Ball." Honestly, any of the tracks could be standouts on this one with the exception of the final song, which was kind of a slow bummer at the end of a very good album. I went into this listen thinking it would be a straightforward 3 star experience: very likeable with some good fun tracks that I enjoyed but probably wouldn't revisit too much, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun I had with it. Enough that I think it's a clear 4 star album. I would definitely put this whole album on again, but I'd have to be in the right sorta mood...

Really enjoyable album overall. Can definitely see myself getting it on to this. Very classy album given the subject matter.

This will be a breeze to listen to. Marvin Gaye consistently creates pleasant tunes to lay back and just enjoy. Feels like he rarely puts a foot wrong. I have listened to a fair amount of his music before so I know what I'm getting into. Let's Get It On The sex song. Memed to death for its smoothness and cheesy blatant sexuality. Remains memorable in spite of the memes and mockery. And I do think the song is used as a joke simply because it's so good at what it's trying to do. Absolutely iconic from start to finish. A fine performance which enhances what is fairly basic writing. Marvin Gaye's voice just enhances the song so much. Sexy, sensual with the dated production and instrumentation adding charm to the track. One of the great horny songs of all time. 5/5 Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away) The desperate pleading is honestly pretty charming. The background vocals are great. I think the band does a great job creating that unique Marvin Gaye RNB sound. A solid song which puts me in a good move. Love the instrumentation. Enthralling performance. Greatm 4.5/5 If I Should Die Tonight Opens very abruptly after the first track. The transition is not smooth at all. I like the mix. The keys and violin sit just right in the background. The strings and brass instruments create a moment of magic in the instrumental. Great singing as always. The song sounds large and grand. Lovely ending. Good. 4/5 You Sure Love To Ball Fantastic bass work. Not a fan of how the vocal melody evolves. The way he resolves the main vocal line is a bit flat and uninteresting. When they play with the vocal layering with the repetitive chorus playing is really good. Decent. 3.5/5 Just Keep You Satisfied. Some of the lyrics are a bit terrible. The performance oozes soul and desire. He sounds like he knows he was born to do this, the confidence in his own ability is admirable. Background harmonies sound fantastic. The sparseness of the instrumental is a bit of a let down, but it does highlight some great bass tones, and is an effective closer. Feels sentimental and sufficiently powerful. Decent. 3.5/5 While never reaching quite the heights of "What's Going On" or "I Want You" I still think this album deserves its plaudits even if it's only based on performances alone. Feels warm and makes me happy in the same ways other projects of his do. I just love how in tune Marvin Gaye is with his band, and how much they do to enhance the sound of his marvelous performances. Each track on the album is filled with a groove that is lush and often enhanced by a soulful horn section. Notable songs, including the title track "Let's Get It On" and "Distant Lover, remain among the best soul songs ever recorded. Despite being over 50 years since its release, the album remains relevant, feels fresh and continues to evoke an emotional responses. This album is truly timeless. While Justin Timberlake may have claimed to be bringing sexy back. He was mistaken. Sexy never left.

this is the legendary follow-up to What's Going On, an album that's just as relevant today as it was in 1971. it's a magical combination of timeless music with a political angle that only grows stronger and more prescient over the decades. Let's Get It On is, obviously, not nearly as concerned with the issues of the day, but in a way, it's just as timeless and relevant as What's Going On. few topics, especially in American culture, are more universal than sex! Marvin Gaye's liner notes give me the impression that this was an album he made to heal from his sexual trauma and repression; you can hear the weight falling off his shoulders as he careens over these tracks. What's Going On might be notable for its songwriting prowess, but Let's Get It On captures Gaye in the raw. the songs are much simpler, but that simplicity serves the sexual theme, giving him plenty of room to feel out each lyric and phrase. everything is super groovy, and deeply intimate. this is definitely a step in a new direction from what Motown had become known for, and I'm glad they gave Gaye the creative liberty to make it happen! we have a whole host of funky, loose, jam-session-like soul and R&B albums to thank him for. strong 8/10.

This album really was pretty good, as the critics all seem to purport. This isn’t the type of music I normally listen to, but I can see putting it on from time to time just to mellow out a bit. I could do without the moaning sounds at the beginning of “You Sure Love to Ball” (I always hate this effect, and the title and lyrics could be a bit more subtle as well). Even though this is a blatant sex album, I quite enjoyed it and give it four stars.

The perfect record for valentine’s day. An album of unabashed odes to straight up raw dogging it shouldn’t be as good as this, but Marvin’s got the juice to make it work. Smooth as hell vocals from Motown’s golden boy and Jamerson’s unmistakable thumping bass, this is one sexy half hour ride. I could have done without the bongos and the tambourine: the unsexiest of all the instruments.

A little odd as this is a part of my "first thing in the morning" routine but it is a wonderful album. I'm not sure who had the more tragic end of life between him and Sam Cooke. On the subject of the music, well, its sublime. The lyrics are a little cheesy but that both to be expected of the genre and he does them credit in his cadence and voice.

Again so much here. It's so hard to separate his violent death, his beating by his father as he grew up. What a wonderful LP. Greasy A/F! Well produced, like the big bass and percussion. Liked "Ball" & "On". The LP flowed from song to song. As a little kid I recall Marvin's skull cap and took to sporting one too.

Distant Lover, Keep Gettin It On, and pretty much every other song is a delightful combination of Marvin's old style with new funk attitudes. Just a shame the title track is a punchline too often today.

Initially, it caught me off guard, but I enjoyed it more with repeatable listening.

Incredibly sexy and smooth, Martin has some banging vocals!! Sweet, sensual and romantic. I liked it, it's so very groovy. I'd definitely dance to this, what's interesting is that the album is pretty short! Although I think it does alot with so little. The instrumentals are great and they really translate the sensuality and longing. My favorites have to be "You Sure Love To Ball" "Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)" and finally, "Distant Lover", probably means I enjoy the slower and tender side of these love songs more.

Yay! Our last Marvin Gaye album was just a week or so ago, so we get to think comparatively! My favorite way to form thoughts around music!!! This does share many similarities on sonics with What's Going On, but where it differs is that most songs here are really in the pocket - theres just a bit more groove to provide some backbone to the songs. That's not true for everything though, which allows me to talk about my favorite song on here. "If I should die tonight" is just so beautiful in it's sentiment and execution. The swelling strings and horns, the light, plucky guitars fading in and out, and Marvin putting his whole heart and soul into the vocal performance. Wow, such a pretty pretty pretty song! Another highlight, "You sure love to ball" gets back into the more groovy (and almost bossanova) territory - and I think its a nice microcosm of the other change this album sees in comparison to Whats Going On; there's no social outcrying here. It's just one smooth love song after another. Love proclamations and grapplings with ones feelings surrounding a lover, these are what we get treated to on this record.

I had to listen to Here My Dear some weeks ago and the experience of that album as my first taste of Marvin Gaye's music was quite the first impression because it was pretty nice sonically but the spilling of guts gave it this dark and sad undertone that I just couldn't ignore. I write this here because I didn't get to be very detailed for my thoughts on Here My Dear but also because by comparison, getting to hear Let's Get it On is almost night and day in the mood and lyrics. The obvious meme thought about this album is the one with the classic sexy riff in the title track that just screams "this album is about sex to love your girl by and like, yeah that's true but it's also not EVERYTHING this album has to offer either. It's just perfectly suited to soundtrack a cozy afternoon with your partner (or by yourself) or simply dancing to really well composed dancey soul. It's really hard not to enjoy this album because it's effortlessly great at the instrumental choices it has, Marv's voice is smooth yet full of passion for the subject of his songs, you can believe he feels so strongly about this woman which only makes the way it presents these emotions even better. Just, great stuff once again

Oh THIS is where the sexytimes movie music comes from! This was nice, a little too sexy for a Monday morning.

The title track towers above the rest of this a fair bit, to the extent that songs that might otherwise sound amazing just sound like less authentic versions of it. Still, it's MG at his sexiest, smoothest and coolest. Obviously it doesn't have the emotional punch of What's Going On, nor the meaning, but that's not to say that it isn't very good.

The gentle touch this record has is uncanny; Marvin is truly on his own. It's such a beautifully-composed record that will forever be timeless. The instrumentation paired with his vocals is mesmeric. Fantastic record.

Baby-making music, schlechter als what's going on tho

The rare album that cements itself as a keeper literally in the first notes - that riff and the title track alone set the table. Nothing after the initial track could approach that - nor does - which puts it a notch below What's Going On. It's not perfect especially that there's essentially a repeat ("Keep Gettin' It On") song :P, it gets a little ridiculous lyrically (um..."You Sure Love to Ball" what) and the last cut is too awash with strings but the album's best make this a classic. Everyone talks about the lyrics (and hmm, I did too) but the music is what carries it. Band members and/or musicians should be on the cover dammit - James Jamerson (bass) especially. 8/10 4 stars

This might be the gold standard for getting down music. That lead single knows what's about to happen.

As much as I'm not really a fan of this type of music, and Gaye can be hit or miss for me, there's something about the songs on this album. There's a reason that it's the joke music put on in the movies for when the main characters are going to be ... intimate. Because just hearing the opening of the title track, everyone is the same headspace. Jack Black doing his cover of it in High Fidelity is a such a highlight of that movie, too.

one of his great "____'s G_____ On" records. this one's a concept album about a guy who likes to fuck. i like to imagine the look on the faces of the guys behind the console when marv dropped "stop beatin' 'round the bush." the title track remains funny, horny, ecstatic, unimpeachable, even after so many bad movie needle drops have turned it into a cliché. funnier and hornier still is the reprise "keep gettin' it on" at the end of side a, reminding you that he is, indeed, still gettin' it on ten minutes later. fucks my shit up everytime. love the drums at the end of "please don't stay." love the little red toque. love the pacman-ass typeface on the cover. last record he told us "god is love" and here he tells us sex is love. law of commutativity. we're all sensitive people with so much to give.

Sometimes it’s hard to listen to an album decades after, forgetting how edgy and groundbreaking it was at the time. It’s amazing how Gaye took his trauma and used this album to focus on the thing that brought him fear but reframe it in a way where sex between people who Love one another is beautiful and should be celebrated. Sonically, there are so many things here that not only influence slow jams, R &B, and hip hop. This a funky soulful album that I listened to with new ears and beyond the cliches. Maybe bc of Kanye’s sampling of it, but Distant Lover is by far my favorite track on this album but I absolutely love the usage of Keep Getting in On midway through this album.

I only knew the title track, which I've never really listened to carefully, and man it's great. Basically all of these songs are about bonin' lol, but man they're really great, he's got such a great voice and the songs are so god damn groovy. Overall a pretty awesome album, maybe a liiiittttle bit too "smooth" throughout, but it's still great.

Respect to Gaye for putting a sequel to his song within the same goddamn album. He must really like gettin' it on.

Not my favorite Gaye album of the 70s by any means but still amazing on its own right Kinda funny how Let's Get It On and Distant Lover (the big songs on the album more or less) aren't really my favorites though. Both immortal tracks but i think I've heard those first few notes in a Reese's commercial one too many times If I Should Die Tonight is a testament to soul music being the smoothest shit known to man and i will not accept any slander of it. Please Don't Stay is also up there, that one only grows on me with each listen 8/10

That's Marvin Gaye alright. This feels like his pinnacle classic most iconic album. It's interesting to listen through this album later on in the 1001 albums exercise, as by now I have listened to and learned about Here, My Dear where Gaye is airing his dirty laundry. I find this artist to be an interesting and very human figure.

- Not sure if many songs truly stand out on their own, except for the couple that I have heard in movies time and time again as a stand-in for sexual chemistry. But this whole album is a pleasant vibe. - Gaye's voice is unquestionably beautiful. And the sheer comfort that comes with the orchestral backing is easy to chill to. - Almost downgraded this for having a song called "You Sure Love To Ball," complete with a woman moaning as an introduction. But, it is ballsy...no pun intended.

I know this album is primarily known for it's title track and that track's meme status but it is still a really good track and the other tracks here are great as well. The actual music here was really beautiful in places and features what probably will be the closest that we will ever get to having classical music on this list. Marvin's voice also was the perfect kind of voice for this album as it provided the romantic feel that the album needed. And none of the songs are bad either so it is a great album all around. It's good soulful music, but Keep Gettin' It On sounded like a reworked version of Let's Get It On and Distint Lover's chord progression sounded very similar to What's Going On to me. Short and sweet. Felt like one big song, which I think is a good thing. Very cohesive.

This album is nothing but pure sexy fire.

As usual very well put together album from Marvin Gaye, it is all a bit in the same tempo a small bit of variety would have been a 5 but instead 4.5*

This one was soo smooth and romantic. This definitely has a place on this list. The opening track speaks for itself.

It was good. Not so good that I want to listen to any of it again, but I enjoyed it at the time.

Soulful and deep. The title track is the big one but I'm enjoying Please Don't Stay, especially the drumming. If I Should Die Tonight slows things down more and walks on the edge of sappy, but doesn't cross it. The backing strings help. Keep Gettin' It On is next with the tempo brought back up and the rhythm section is impeccable again. On the back half, Distant Lover is a standout, slow but moodier. You Sure Love To Ball as well with the interplay of bass, strings and sax. There's no real duds here. The basslines never stop. I can't decide but if you want to give this 5 stars I'm not mad.

Famously, this album is thought of as the soundtrack to sex, and probably has been more times than we can count. You only need to listen to the first three notes of the album to evoke images (both serious and comedic) of a provocatively dressed person in seductive poses. I honestly can't think of any song that better represents sex than 'Let's Get it On'. The rest of the album continues the themes of passion and intimacy that Gaye became famous for and it holds up as a classic. More interesting is the background to the album, which is worth reading. But fair warning, that this next section will definitely kill the mood for you. I honestly would have never guessed that Marvin Gaye was ever traumatized about sex from his preacher father. The story really adds so much to what the album represents. We all know it's a celebration of sex and love, but who knew that this was actually about healing for Marvin Gaye as well? Turning sex into something healthy and beautiful in constrast to the demonized view he'd been given in childhood. The story gets crazier when you realize that his father, who he's clearly rebelling against here, would kill him about a decade after this release. However, you look at it, as a soundtrack to sex, or as a lighter chapter in a very difficult, tortured life, 'Let's Get It On' is an indisputable classic.

As the opening notes started the mood was set. The music was played to death to insinuate sex, but I really wonder how this sounded when it was new and without the current direct link to sex. Overall the album was smooth and enjoyable

Marvin just couldn't stop getting it on. Very cohesive, probably the first album that comes to mind when one thinks of "mood-making music." Kanye West samples; here's one for example: "Distant Lover" → "Spaceship"
