Inoffensive and pleasant though not something I’d go back to often

Soulful and smooth, his vocals are unbelievable, this is very much an easy listen album

It's a 5, an absolute must listen for anyone. It's funky, soulful, expressive, and intelligent, all without being an easy listen. The only minor complaint I would have is the sex noises strewn about, but considering the themes, aesthetic, and overall tone of the album, they don't detract or distract much.

Oh yeah, now this is the Marvin we love!

This was disappointing. A lot of the songs sounded the same and not in a good way. I felt that this was a bit safe, a bit meh and a bit pretentious. There is much better Marvin Gaye stuff out there.

I've been really tryin' to assess this album. Tryin' to hold back this feeling that it's the second best Marvin Gaye record. And if you feel like I feel, you'll want to give it five stars.

This album was a great old school r & b album by one of the greats! Very very much what I think of when. I think music for getting it on too haha 😂 but over all good album

Pretty much what you expect. Great voice though very repetitive in sound and theme.

Classic! Can‘t go wrong with this one. Doesn’t get me to shoot out of my seat with my hands clutching my heart, but always good to hear- and makes me feel like a blues-y person which is never a bad thing!

A bunch of quality slow jams. This album is very well put together musically, and Gaye's voice is both soothing and emotional. The album doesn't overstay its welcome, either, clocking in at a rather lean 31 minutes.

Not Marvin's fault but it is what it is --Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)...nice but not his best work --If I Should Die Tonight...sappy but what a voice --Keep Gettin' It On...an unnecessary reprise. would make more sense as a closer --Come Get to This...decent funk with some doo-wop --Distant Lover...more of a vocal jam than a song but the vocals are amazing --You Sure Do Love To Ball...I don't know what this phrase meant in the 70s and I'm afraid to ask. Sounds nice and funky --Just to Keep You Satisfied...a mediocre song carried by amazing vocals. I stand by my earlier opinion that 'Keep Gettin'...' should have closed

A controversial album due to the almost illegal levels of sexiness. Initial measurements with a standard Sex-O-Meter™ immediately pegged the needle, unbelievably more than a full Barry White. Continued measuring caused the meter to explode. Caution is advised while listening. Damn. Excellent album by an amazing artist.

Decent music, not quite my kinda stuff

God damn this is sexy. And usually im a freakin prude and dont get into this kinda stuff but its feels so sensual and loving. Makes me much less uncomfortable that WAP. Wildly good stuff here though. I've always head of Marvin gaye and I know the songs that are part of the general culture but I like the rest of get it on other than the 3 seconds in some shitty commercial. Just groovy and fun songs all around.

Boring. Again he is crying because a „babe“ left him. And then he cries, because another babe comes to him. But i swear, she will leave him and he will sing: „uhhhhhhh babe, ohh babebabe uuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhh babe“. Now i will listen to slayer to be awake again. „WAR ENSEMBLE!!!!!“

No song other song on this album is as stand out as Let's Get It On but it all sounds very sophisticated and accomplished, if a bit samey.

Obviously I’d heard of this album and its title track before. I did not realise that I had never actually heard the title track the whole way through. Everyone knows that iconic intro but I didn’t know much else beyond that. Overall the album is as smooth as you’d expect from Marvin Gaye and was a wonderful listen.

I can't believe how good this record sounds. The recording is so live and clear. It's like being in the room. Dude's voice is perfect. Unbelievable tone. I mean - what are these performances? "If I Should Die Tonight" is unreal. He's using everything in the toolbox here. Get outta here, Marvin..... The only downside is it’s only 8 tracks and 2 of those are kinda throwaway. Otherwise this is impeccable. FIVE STARS

thoughts: i really enjoyed this. obviously the title track is a classic, but i loved the slower songs on the album. marvin gaye’s voice is magic on top of the production. “just to keep you satisfied” is a perfect final track songs: “please don’t stay (once you go away)”, “if i should die tonight”, “distant lover” rating: 9.0/10

Good enough soul music but not sure where the niche is for me to play this. In the bedroom would surely be too much of a statement and throw unwanted pressure on my performance..but also unlikely to play it with friends and I'm not *quite* narcissistic enough to play when alone. So...🤷‍♀️

This is one sexy album. The thing is, I don’t need an entire album of sexiness, and even though it’s only 31 minutes end-to-end, it’s still way too long for my performance requirements. I like the opening track and to be perfectly honest the 4 minutes and 50 seconds it offers is pretty much sure to fulfill any of my bedroom needs. Musically, I find it a little bit one paced and it doesn’t engage me in the way that “what’s going on?” does. It’s almost a precursor to much of the more modern takes on soul music which I thoroughly detest. I’m a bit “Meh” with Marvin here.

This is the first time I ever heard the full album. I have heard “Let’s Get it On” before. It doesn’t surprise me if the World population increased due to this song! As far as the rest of this album? Smooth, great voice, fantastic production. 5/5

Fantastic album, like everything Marvin put out. I like the previous album “What’s Going On” a bit more for the funk it brings. “Let’s Get it On” is more reliant on soul and sexual energy. Still, an absolute classic.

Very different feel to what’s going on, less gospel inspired and a lot more groovy funk songs, all of which all have a very clear theme. I really liked this, funk is one of those genres which is an automatic win for me, especially if it’s a singer like Marvin Gaye, each song seemed to have a use of an instrument which hooked me funk wise, whether it was muted electric guitar, a type of drum sound, the bass line or saxophone which were all made even better by the great vocals. I do wish this was a bit longer though to be honest. This is also his first funk album which is crazy. Favourites: let’s get it on, please don’t stay, keep gettin’ it on, come get to this and distant lover. Overall, 8/10.

Funny enough Ive been on a Soul binge, so this is a nice way to end it off. Few albums can say they've defined the idea of what sex sounds like. It's a tough job to follow up what may be the greatest album of all time, but this album did it about as well as anyone could. It's so good. 96/100

This album is masterful. The only song that pulled my from amazement was "You Sure Love to Ball", too repetitive. Even with this, still an absolute classic.

If sex were music, it would be Marvin Gaye. This is probably him at his sexiest. Also the title track is like a jumpscare if you forget that it's on this album. Solid album, definitely worth a listen.

Perfect album!

I prefer protest Marvin Gaye to sexy Marvin Gaye, But this was a relaxing listen. After having sung all of those songs, I really hope that he did get it on and it was worth it.

I am gaye for this album

I was surprised how short it was. I felt it stayed in comfort zone for most of the album, with the last track trying something different (but staying in the relaxed feel), but it didn't wow me.

I like the album, but think there's probably a more typically Motown album I'd like more. The drums on some tracks in particular are really great. Some of the Latin rhythms though weren't my cup of tea. 3 for me

To state the obvious Marvin Gaye has a beautiful voice. Hard not to like and a great Sunday album. Only slight reservations about being a bit one pace with 2 tracks ostensibly the same on 30 mins. What a nice sound though. Low 4/5 (7/10)

Lovely sound but ends on weaker tracks.

Play anyone this album and the descriptive word that's likely to come to their head first is "smooth." Damn this is a smooth record. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone with a pulse who finds it objectionable. Marvin Gaye sounds deeply in love and out of that made one of the all time most romantic LPs of all time. Its a shock when it ends after only 30 minutes but I admire Gaye not stretching beyond the hits.

Its a solid to high 4 for me, could have been higher if it covered a bit more ground I find it a bit one note, even though i do enjoy the one very well done note

Not sure why all the hate for this, it’s a landmark album for both funk and soul and explores some complex themes about sex, love and longing, particularly given the context of Marvin’s upbringing and abuse. On the surface, there’s an extremely sensual sound that no doubt influenced more modern R&B, but whereas that took it at face value, running with the sound alone, Marvin’s sincere lyrics give the all important balance and depth that much of that genre lacks. It was also a controversial album given the subject matter and was deemed as a huge risk for Motown to even release it but it gained both critical and commercial success and showed a markedly different side to Marvin following his much more well known and politically themed album _What’s Going On_

I enjoyed this album a lot! Classic tracks, well produced. Been getting a few soul records in a row this week, and I think Isaac Haye's Hot Buttered Soul is a better overall album, but Marvin is always great

Listens: 4 Standout tracks: Let's Get It On, If I Should Die Tonight I tried to think of a witty or clever remark or pun about how this album will help get you laid or at least increase your chances with a prospective partner, but I couldn't think of anything before I had to submit my rating :( . Also It's been a bit of a dry spell lately, so, thanks a lot for reminding me Marvin Gaye.

You have to admire the man’s dedication to getting it on, first Let’s Get it On and then later Keep Gettin’ it On, and everything between, this is far too sensual for my tastes. To his credit, this is only just over half an hour so didn’t drag on. Not for me really, What’s Going On is a good song and something a bit more political would float my boat a bit more, I expect that album is on the list somewhere.

funky and good but nowhere near what’s going on

A few years ago I dropped my wife off at the grocery store so she could go shopping. It was a nice day so i decided to just hang out in the car. I found a shady spot, rolled the windows all the way down and turned the radio up. While I was sitting out there, WXRT played "Let's Get It On" and as one can't help but do, I started to groove on it, singing along and such. I forgot, however, that this song is essentially sex on a stick and after a minute or so I got super self conscious, I mean, I was by myself in that car! This album is so fucking smooth that... other smooth things wish they were this smooth. (I'm tired - analogies are tough today)

4.5 stars. The album is well put together. Marvin Gaye is a fantastic artist.

Absolutely loved this album. Just velvety and soulful. Listening to this album in an open-style office building was an interesting experience.

Fantastic beginning to an album. The first half was so good. Smooth and danceable. Lots of really nice drum work. Song structure is very basic but the embellishments really make them stand out. It's a really short album with really no weak tracks. Only preference would be for the energy at the beginning to be consistent at the end. Would definitely add this to the rotation if I'm in the mood for some rnb. Overall: 9.5/10

On the other hand, it’s not as ambitious instrumentally as What’s Going On, but that’s not what it needs to be, since these are songs that call for just the right accompaniment and allow listeners to move however their bodies feel like moving. Don Peake made the guitar sound as if it were flirting with us… It’s nothing short of a passionate song and an undeniable classic. I don’t think the rest of the tracklist reaches that level, but it shouldn’t be overlooked either. I think it was a mistake on my part to listen to it during the day — I feel these are all songs that would hit harder while staring romantically out the window on a rainy night… But I had no other time, and it’s summer, so it’s not raining at all. Jokes aside, the album, though short, ends up feeling somewhat monotonous; it doesn’t have the versatility of its predecessor, and there aren’t as many memorable moments, at least after a first listen. Even so, it’s a more than solid record for Gaye that puts his immense talent as a singer right in front of our eyes. I know this is an iconic album. But Let's Get It On has been played out quite a bit and the rest of the album lost my attention.

An enjoyable listen but not particularly remarkable other than Let’s Get It On.

I mean, it's good. But the title track is doing a lot of heavy lifting. The rest of the album, while still good, just doesn't have that standout material.

There aren’t any profound ideas here, I guess. But when an album is this velvety, who needs profundity?

#16 Let's Get It On ~ Marvin Gaye Fuck me, what an album. Marvin Gaye sounds crazy good here. And who can really blame him, cause he's really getting down and sexy with these 8 songs. But in them is also a touch of deep sentimentality and personal vulnerability in his voice, as if the thought of romance elicits painful memories (Please Don’t Stay (Once You Go Away), If I Should Die Tonight). And yes, love can be ugly and painful but these sort of unpredictable affairs should be taken with a reasonable degree of optimism, which Marvin breathes into the album. This is the key that makes this album sound truly ALIVE. Outside Marvin's layered vocals, the instrumentals are incredibly lush and easy going to listen to. Nevertheless the introduction of saxophone in the background lines help duet with Marvin's vocals and adds an soaring feeling to the music (Come Get To This). This is a short album, which aims to do one thing well: to make you feel alive. And it pretty much does it perfectly with each song. If one could nitpick something about this album, it probably be the fact it inspired a very lacklustre Charlie Puth song, and that's probably it. Verdict: The Joy and Pains of Life

Mercy mercy me I need a cigarette after that. Let's Get It On has the wonderful quality of having a beat that makes for steady, purposeful hip thrusting.

Get it on, the quintessential fuck song, puts the album at a 3 by itself (plus have a sequel that's message is "keep fuckin'", pure genius). But I really should say making love, because although the topic is base, Marvin's sultry, emotional voice caresses the topic and the musical composition is such vulvety perfection.

Title track is a classic. The other seven are middling. And he knows it; otherwise, one of them wouldn't be a refrain of the title track. Given this dynamic, this really is more of an EP than a full album - and a weak one, at that.

I don’t really buy into it when these albums have one major song, and the rest is just filler. I’ve never really cared for “Let’s get it on”, and the rest didn’t change my perspective.

In many ways, this is the perfect follow up to What's Going On. It is like Marvin was out tackling the social issues all day and now longs for intimacy and love. The music and vibe are great, but it is hard to know whether he is really looking for, talking about, and pursing true love or just release. And if It is latter, then both relationship and social justice are marginalized. It sounds good either way, and that brings up other questions.

Always felt he is overrated but I was wrong tried to listen to most albums and its good but nothing that made my life change. This album specifically has a special groove that lasts the whole album with a vibe thats tough to equal. I dont love the falsetos yet feel this is a top album for that genere

Are you kidding! Let's Get it On. First note grabbed my full attention as it should. Soulful Marvin. Loved it.

A sensual and atmospheric album, filled with desire and intimacy. Marvin Gaye hits the tone perfectly with his silky vocals and warm production, and the theme is delivered with great confidence. But for me, it becomes a bit too one-dimensional over time, the sexual focus dominates a little too much for the album to truly hold my attention all the way through. Solid craftsmanship, but not entirely my cup of tea throughout. 3/5

Marvin Gaye has really grown as an artist for me through this list. His second album on the list for me, and this is a solid one, though perhaps not absolute stellar. Though 'Let's Get It On' might be one of the most well known and overplayed love songs (along a few other songs from Marvin), it's still one hell of a tune. And his singing really makes it shine! The other songs on the album don't stand out as much, but I have to say I really enjoyed most of them. 'If I Should Die Tonight' for example has such a good melancholic chord progression that just works great with the guitars and Marvin's singing. Though lacking of hits, and certainly an album that lyrically feels quite "thirsty", I liked this a lot. Perhaps not an album that I will come back to instantly or remember as a particularly good one, but I enjoyed listening to it a whole lot more than a many other albums on this list. Think I will let that be the decider for the album rating!

I was looking forward to this, but I left feeling a little disappointed. I think this album has a few too many love ballads. I prefer my RnB with some social commentary. Overall, there just aren’t as many earworms as there are in "What’s Going On", which is another album we've previously had on this list. I've never really liked “Let’s Get It On” (the song), as I find it a bit too cheesy. That said, a few of the other tracks stood out, “If I Should Die Tonight” and “Distant Lover” were both quite nice. A solid 3 stars.

“There’s nothing wrong with me loving you.” Lush, romantic, and just lovely. The all-timer title track (which is so good it has a reprise) is well supported.

The album is good, but it’s hard to ignore the over saturated love R&B ballads on it. While they sound great (it is MARVIN GAYE), some songs can feel way too overly cheesy and cringey. Other than that, this is a good record.

One of the sexiest and smoothes albums Ive ever listened to.

Marvin Gaye must have made this to be every person's wingman because this album is just too irresistible!

My daughter just bought this for me for my birthday on vinyl. What a great great album. Most of what he sings about is still relevant today. Unfortunately. He was one of the ones that went way too early. I think he had a lot left in him.

Starts off with a total banger, Lets Get It On. Then a couple solid tracks. And then Keep Gettin It On just kills the flow, and the rest of the album is just ok. It's mostly the same song again and again. Best song: Lets Get It On

The title track had me a bit suspicious but this ended up being a fantastic listen. Marvin Gaye was 1000% in his bag when he cooked up this banger. Not to mention that this was a short and sweet album with a runtime of 31 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised how charming this album would end up being. Top 5: Come Get To This(Fav), You Sure Love To Ball(close second), Distant Lover, Let’s Get It On, and Please Don’t Stay (Once You Go Away) No bad songs 4.6/5

Huge talent, no question, but it really demands a specific mood, and I wasn’t in it while working on my greenhouse. I liked What’s Going On better overall.

Kinda weird, but the album didn’t really click until the last song when I realized it was about all the aspects of love, starting with sex, obviously, and then ending with a solemn goodbye, with that in mind it really bumps this album up for me, I already knew I was going to give another album of his a five, can’t wait to listen to that one again, but this is fantastic as well and the added context makes this album so much better in my mind.

I’m pretty sure a couple of people were conceived because of this album. Just a hunch. Weirdly enough, my man problem with this album is that it’s too, uhm, sexy. As someone who really enjoyed What’s Going On, this one felt less smooth and more groovy. Honestly, at times, this really felt like bedroom music, which makes causal listening feel awkward. God forbid you don’t listen to this while doing it and instead driving home from work. The Gowanus Expressway doesn’t need to hear that woman on You Sure Like To Ball moan. Outside that though, it’s still Marvin Gaye. When Marvin hits, he hits and sets the standard for r&b to come. It’s not as close to perfection as What’s Going On for me, but this one still raises to the occasion… Yeah, that’s a bad joke. Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On is the sexiest thing I've ever heard. The album is consistent in it's vision/concept, but also in it's execution; Gaye gives it to you in a breezy 32 minutes. I'm shocked that even the stuff that seems like filler is actually excellent. The production is impeccable, Gaye's voice is soulful and powerful, and the instrumentation is precise. For an album about fucking, it's hilarious that it's as meticulously constructed and presented as it is. A whole, realixed vision on wax... .... Goddamn.

Lets Get It On has an amazing vocal performance from Gaye on smooth and satisfying instrumentals. I loved this album, very easy and enjoyable listening. Lyrics are super sex-infused especially in the title track. If I Should Die Tonight and You Sure Love To Ball are personal highlights of the album.

Marvin‘s vocals are beyond compare, but times I think this album feels a little bit overproduced with a little too much orchestration.

The musicianship is excellent, an undeniable voice, and an incredible opening track. So good they reprised it on track 4 with an equally good (better??) version. However, literally everything else on the album doesn't do anything for me - to the point of boredom. I've listened through 3 times, and will probably listen again, but I just can get excited about anything but the title track and it's reprise.

Talk about a horny album haha. I love the dichotomy of this and “What’s Going On?”. Scathing social commentary versus ‘hey girl let’s get all the way down’. I know there’s a deeper, catharsis behind the album in reality; but it’s just interesting to me, and speaks to his breath of topics he can be so well versed in. Not to mention the music is perfectly funky and R&B-ey.

Marvin Gaye is probably my favorite Motown artist. What a lovely album about getting it on. Whereas What's Going On dealt with sociopolitical struggles and civil rights, Let's Get It On is a celebration of sex and love during such turbulent times.

Let’s Get It On is excellent music to make pesto pasta to, which I’m pretty sure is exactly what Marvin had in mind. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the time between “Let’s Get it On” and the reprise three tracks later was, ingeniously, the average length of time it takes for the average pot of lightly salted water to boil on a standard gas hob. I could go track by track – saying things about the pure and agonising drama of the staccato opening to “If I Should Die”, the richness of the string arrangements throughout, even the bittersweet album closer – but isolated moments aren’t really what makes this record so special. The movement of it – rising, falling, halting, waiting, driving, teasing, delivering – is. Yep. It’s excellent to cook to.

Whole album is just more horny jams from Mr Gaye. I don’t know that the list needs both of these albums but this one is better I think? Alright. One of the reasons why I'm so behind on this list is because I've been listening to this album more than any other album on the list. I don't know why it has stuck on me so much, but I have really been loving the whole piece. Obviously the first song is a major hit, but I think the rest of the songs are just as, if not, better than Let's Get it On. This album is really jammy and sexual, which usually wouldn't get a high rating from me; however, it has landed with me. Gonna give this a 5 just by how much I've listened to it over others. Is it the most complex? No. Is it the most interesting? No. Is it filling a void for me? Yes.

Marvin Gaye really was the king of the 70s R&B-Soul Fuck Jam. Some real classic fuck jams on here, which I probably would have been well served listening to while getting down fuck nasty. Unfortunately, I listened to them while playing War Thunder instead, so kinda lost some magic there. Clearly an incredible singer, but I got the gist pretty early.
