Reviews (page 9 of 13)

This album is a bit tough for me to judge, and I think I'm going to have to come back to it for future listens to truly give a solid review on it. On this listen, it didn't feel like there was a huge amount going on here. I like each song, but they also kind of flow by without there being much for me to say specifically about them. What's Going On made much more of an impression on me at first listen. I think this might be a case where lots of works that came after Let's Get It On incorporated this sound and approach, and as a consequence it doesn't sound as revolutionary as it is. I certainly can't say that it sounds like works that came before it, and the Wikipedia entry seems to confirm this. I feel like there's a lot here, but it's not something that I'm going to be able to articulate after a single listen 4/5

I would listen to Marvin sing the phone book, in a few times in this it sounded like he was

Got it on.

Really good and doesn't overstay its welcome

Great album, smooth and low volume music to vibe to

Smooth as butter

This album might be responsible for more human lives than any other album. Just a classic album that makes you feel happy to be listening to, or doing other things to.....

HAHAHAH i mean, growing up in the 2000's "lets get it on" was such a meme and here i am listen to it seriously. thats sexy man, marvin gaye is hot

It's all about sex and I love it

Alexa, trigger 'sexy time'.

Did you know his dad shot him? Great opening song.

Fantastic album, one of the best opening tracks ever. Not much more to say On a side note, why do the toms on side B sound so weird? What's up with that?

Back when I started university in Newcastle, I lived in student flats out in the 'burbs. We used to frequent our local pub on an afternoon if we'd finished lectures early as they had a pool table and that time of the day we at least felt that we were unlikely to get beaten up for being students by the locals. Or "Get worr heed kicked in" in the local dialect. As well as the pool table, they also had a mostly terrible jukebox but I used to select the title track from this album, and other things like 'Rainy Days and Mondays' by The Carpenters that I'm sure made us really fit in with the daytime clientele in a suburban pub in the North East. The Collingwood isn't there anymore, they knocked it down and built an Asda. The university sold the flats and now it's a weird motel place. Which is kinda sad as that first year at university was one of the absolute best years. The title track is so good they basically repeated it for the fourth song. And look, any album that has a song called "You Sure Love to Ball" has to have something going for it.

Definitely would listen again

The ultimate romantic soul album. The title track is classic and I could listen to it daily for the rest of my life. But ultimately this type of music while pleasant and if high quality, it does not move me. Still an 3.75 🌟 for its classic status

Amazing.

Classic slow jams. If you’re not step-touchin’ to this I don’t know what’s up!

Marvin! Marvin! It’s Chuck! Your cousin, Chuck Gaye. You know that new sound you were looking for? Well listen to this! *sound of me getting it on*

Love the chord progressions here; memorable tunes; quite chill throughout

Great album. Few songs sound the same but it’s alright as they’re good.

Great, but lacking the edge of What's Going On.

Can't go wrong with the silky smooth voice of Marvin Gaye!!!

Had a deluxe edition, includes an instrumental of "cakes" - great song! Album is seriously chilled, just what I needed but not quite enough for that final star!

I am a not a familiar with the music of Marvin Gaye at all and the genre of soul and funk in general. After listening to LET'S GET IT ON, it seems pretty good. Not the kind of music, I see myself listening to on a regular basis. I can see where Seal gets his inspiration from. In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, I see that Marvin Gaye has two other albums included: WHAT’S GOING ON (1971) and HERE, MY DEAR (1978) Rate Artist: MARVIN GAYE (3.5) Rate Album (Year): LET’S GET IT ON (1973 Original) (3.5) Rate Album (Year): LET’S GET IT ON (2001 2CD Deluxe Edition) (3.5) Rate Album (Year): LET’S GET IT ON (2002 CD Reissue Edition with Bonus Tracks) (4)

Smooth

Muy buen disco

Pretty good; a jam.

pleasant experience, very smooth, perfect for a long romantic evening

Sexy time in the 1970’s. Smoooooth.

не ну ничо так по музыке

Vitu awesome kuunnella Marvin Gaye ja vaan olla. Selkä notkistuu, lantio herää ja kädet nousee ilmaan.

Kutumusan ykkösklassikko, eka biisihän on saanu jopa meemistatuksen. Myös muut on aika hyviä.

Great album. funky, slick, romantic. A coherent album which sometimes sound like a medley. I prefer the politics of 'what's going on' over the romanticism of 'let's get it on' but still this is a great album.

Though even for 30 minutes it gets a little disposable in the last few songs, the first half of the album is stellar soulful and has a great groove. Very enjoyable.

Enjoy the songs, lots of similar sounding music but it all works together. Very easy listening

A good reminder that Bruno Mars only exists because Marvin Gaye gave him permission

A fun, sexy time.

This album has several of the tunes I most recognize from Marvin Gaye. Oddly, I didn't enjoy this album as much as others in this genre (mainly sexy soul), but certainly liked it enough to give it 4 stars.

classic soul

seems a bit cheaper after Whats Going On, but still pretty alright

Really enjoyed it. too short.

Such a classic album that aged very well. I have such fond memories of listening to this in my teens as I was learning how to play the bass guitar. It's groovy and approachable. A true classic.

TIL he was killed 1 day before his 45th birthday by his own father :(

Baby making music

great soul songs. Best alubum

Wonder situational music. What a voice and unique sound. Such a tragic story he lived.

Three songs in and I'm already pregnant.

Zwoele muziek. Toch wat subtieler dan ik verwachtte. Een op en top romantisch album

I worry when I get an album that has That One Song on it, but this one was consistent and smooth all the way through. Best track: Let's Get It On

pure, smooth, and beautiful. real soul. i'd heard some, but not all, of this album before this, and i'm glad i got to sit through the whole thing.

This was perfect for the ride in yesterday

This is a perfect 3.5 for me. Very solid, short and sweet, but not something I will always been in the mood for. Although Marvin has such an amazing voice

Great voice soulful tunes, I love him more than his dad.

Uno de los discos más chill de esta lista que mantienen un ritmito pegajoso suficiente para no aburrir. Fav: you sure love to ball

Nice... soulish, funkysh... :)

Marvin has a lot of sexual energy in this album, but also a happy aura that pulls on the soul - really quality music just not my personal taste

This album set the benchmark, and now listening back it feels like it soundtracked late night chilling sessions across the world for decades following its release

The sexiest album so far. The iconic opening guitar lick sets the tone and it remains smooth and sensual throughout. Side 1 is consistent and top quality. Track 4, 'Keep Gettin' It On' being a reprise of track 1 'Let's Get It On' works well and holds side 1 together as even more of a consistent and single piece. A perfect 5/5 for Side 1. Side 2 is good, but the tracks are a bit more varied from each other and don't flow quite as well as in the first half. I usually like variety, but when the quality is as high and the style is as smooth and consistent as it is on Side 1, you just want more. Side 2 is 3.5/5. Overall, a brilliant album, which just misses full marks due to a slight dip in the quality and flow of side 2. 4.5/5

Easy listening, great groove.

Marvin Gaye is the third best soul singer behind Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, in my opinion. Although the best songwriter of those three. I used Let's Get It On as my wedding song.

It's good. Nothing on this album beats the intro to the first song but overall it's consistently good.

The album is very smooth and soulful. The opening track is what sets it up and is one of the most recognizable sounds to this day. What a simple and sweet album full of smooth singing and laid back accompaniments. Very much enjoyed it, and it is a perfect album to just listen to.

Luscious ‘70s Soul R&B. Maybe not as groundbreaking as “What’s Going On?”, but comforting and sexy. Gaye’s vocals stand out, of course, but also superlative bass work from Jamerson and Felder, plus tasty 70s orchestra, not quite “Wall of Sound” levels, but fat and satisfying.

I mean, timeless.

Good album. Easy listening.

Classic R&B, a step down from his best but still damn good

Wow, so good haven't listened to the entire album previously, but the title track is only the beginning for this album. After having a quick scan of the Wikipedia page there was more to Marvin's story than I was aware of. His personal struggles with his stunted sexuality due to his father's physical abuse when he was a child. Not only are his lyrics suggestive, but as David Ritz wrote: "If the most profound soul songs are prayers in secular dress, Marvin's prayer is to reconcile the ecstasy of his early religious epiphany with a sexual epiphany ... In those songs of loss and lament—the sense of separation is heartbreaking. On one level, the separation is between man and woman. On a deeper level, the separation is between man and God." Prior to this I would not have guessed that deeper level that the album goes to. Best: Let's Get It On Worst: You Sure Love to Ball

The title track of this album is obviously a "sexy song" meme at this point, but damn is it fantastic. The whole rest of the album is also great, with a couple of weak points in the middle that are still at least pretty good. Amazing vocal work from Gaye that showcases his whole range.

It's a good soul album by Marvin Gaye, but it lacks the real blockbuster songs that are on What's Going On.

Soulful Classic! Funky bass and drums and fantastic vocals. Most of the lyrics are too cheesy for me. Playlist songs have the musicality that overcomes any cheesyness in the lyrics. Playlist: Please Stay (once you go away) Come Get To This

"Let's Get It On," is the thirteenth studio album by American soul singer, songwriter, and producer Marvin Gaye. -- it falls under the genres of soul and funk. This album, released August 28, 1973, is pretty well-known for being very sensual and also very horny. Here's the tracklist! Let's Get It On Please Stay (Once You Go Away) If I Should Die Tonight Keep Gettin' It On Come Get to This Distant Lover You Sure Love to Ball Just to Keep You Satisfied Track 1, "Let's Get It On" is nearly impossible to listen to anymore. All I can imagine is every cringey movie scene that features this song, every commercial, swirling chocolate, silhouettes, Austin Powers. It's sickening. BUT! It's a beautiful song with a beautiful message, delivered by a beautiful voice. The jazzy vibes and bass notes mixed with the horns and violins create a wonderful harmony of love. "Please Stay (Once You Go Away)" is another blushfest, with Gaye's soulful voice begging his lover to stay. The funky guitar work and bongo-ish percussion go great together... just like our protagonists. "If I Should Die Tonight" is track 3 on this album, and it opens with strong disco-ish strings, with sensual flute work adding to the fun. This sounds like it could be a sexy wedding song. Up next is "Keep Gettin' It On," and it already sounds like a sequel to the album's namesake track. It's got some great lyric work: Oh, would you rather make love, children? (ooh, ooh, ah) As opposed to war (ah) Like ya know ya should (ah) Really fun stuff, with a head-boppy tune and nice drum, bass, and funky guitar work. "Come Get to This" is track 5 on "Let's Get It On." It's Gaye singing to his lover, reminiscing with saxophone and strings guiding us along. It's a candy-sweet track! "Distant Lover" has some cool, jingly instrumentation, with some sweet bass chords. There's a sharp, laser beam noise in this song that I also dig. It's a pretty sensual track, with Gaye begging his lover to come back home in strained, passionate vocals. "You Sure Love to Ball" is the horniest track on the album. It opens with heavy breathing from a tired, sexy lady. Gaye sings about staying together, loving you night and day. It has a stringy and saxophoney instrumentation and it really sets the mood for some lovin'. "Just to Keep You Satisfied" is the final track on this album. It's sensual and definitely more of the same. There's smooth sax and a doo wop backing vocal harmonization, and the strings have a disco-inspired feel. This song closes the album with Gaye saying "we can both try to be happy." A sensual album that surely brought joy to many, many people. Favorite track: If I Should Die Tonight Honorable mention: You Sure Love to Ball

Going from What's Going On to this is pretty wild, this is much better as well

Lovely album

Marvin has a great distinctive style that you can't help but love. However, I would have liked a little more variety as this album feels a little samey throughout.

No complaints. It's a classic for a reason.

A classic record, one that I've probably heard a bunch of times just by listening to the radio. I love Marvin Gaye's voice and the timeless melodies here, very happy to revisit this properly!

Put it on and play. Listen and relax. Grab that special someone to chill with.

Silky smooth voice and production, this is Marvin Gaye sounding his most effortless. I think it's a little unfortunate that most people think of him as just the Godfather of the slow jam, because there's so much more going on here. Faves: Let's Get It On, Just to Keep You Satisfied, Distant Lover

This record is like a balm. By the time Keep Gettin' It On rolls around, there's no turning back.

I've liked classical soul for a long time and that includes Marvin Gaye. Usually I prefer a bit faster soul music, but still a good album. Also, foreplay music (too slow for actual sex music though).

Well, I listened to it three times in a row, so that has to say something (it is only 30 mins...) Great, very smooth and soulful. Hard to see now what sort of impact it would have had at the time though.

actually pretty good. definitely one of the better artists of this genre

Sexy AF, so it is

Kept me satisfied. Beautiful and tender. Even more intense after reading about Marvin's personal struggles.

🍆🍆🍆🍆

It's difficult for me to assess the song Let's Get It On as it was ubiquitous for some thirty years after its release, and as such, practically beyond criticism, but I'll try. The first thing I noticed is how beautifully recorded it is. The way the instruments are miked and mixed is perfect. The next is the performances, which are exquisite, especially the guitarist and Marvin himself. The use of the wah wah pedal and the note choices are wonderful and Gaye's voice is in great shape, his vocal improvisations sinuous and soulful in equal measure. Whoever did the arrangement outdid him or herself--they are detailed but there is plenty of room for the song to breathe, a neat trick. The song deserved to be a smash. And it wasn't a one off either. Similary excellent performances and production continue on the first side of the album. Nothing quite as indelible as the hit, but quite good. Unfortunately, the quality takes a noticeable dip on the 2nd half of the album, not in terms of the performances, but rather the arrangements and production. There isn't as much space in the arrangments, and a certain syrupy, sentimental quality creeps in. I'm not a big fan of slow jams myself, and basically the whole album is nothing but slow jams, so that's another knock against Let's Get It On: musically and lyrically, it consistes of minor variations on the same theme. So, how to rate? This is a genre I don't especially care for, but the first side of the album is damned near perfect, while the 2nd half is merely very good. 4/5

I mean, how can't you love the title song? It has such a smooth twang to it. The way he changes his voice throughout this song, sounding as though it's a band singing and not only one man. It is a classic for a reason.

Not as good as What's Going On, but nevertheless an incredibly solid album, very underrated.

Let's Get It On is one of the great songs. Really good stuff - soulful and sexy. Listened to it twice.

ah yes, the essential “let’s fuck” album

Good old Marv

Definitely prefer some of his other more politically charged music, but there's no denying it was still a great album. Saving a 5 for a different Marvin album.

enjoyable

"Let's Get It On" Released: June 15, 1973 "Come Get to This" Released: October 11, 1973 "You Sure Love to Ball" Released: January 2, 1974

Soul animado.

Un disco de media hora que empieza con Let's Get It On no puede estar mal. Temazos como Keep Gettin' It On o Come Get To This. Y buenas canciones como Distant Lover o You Sure Love To Ball o Just To Keep You Satisfied.

Not as good as I expected but has some classics in

one of the smoothest fucking albums ever composed. amazing songs, just a well crafted album.

RIP legend. Soul godfather

Liked it better than whats going on actually. Sax and flute always wins. Favorite tracks are lets get it on, lets keep gettin it on, and you sure love to ball

I'm listening to some music from Marvin Gaye from 1973. Let's Get It On. The first song is of course known as a song that people listen to - to get sexy. It's a pretty well known trope in popular culture to play this song as a signifier of sexy time. It's hard to escape the connotation. Makes me think of Jack Black as well from High Fidelity. Which I think why it's important to listen to this album as a whole, and not just for the stereotypical song about fucking. I'm enjoying it so far. Wikipedia says its a blueprint for years to come on how to put together a slow jam. It makes me want to find out more about Marvin Gaye. I know there is tragedy and it has to do with his father. I wish I could connect so deeply with someone, they way Marvin connects to all the ladies and men with this record.

Lovely sunday afternoon vibes

Groovy. "let's get it on" hits different when it's not attached to some movie or tv show

I like the music. Sounds good.

Smooth.

Great voice, great vibes. Very 70s.

One or two great songs on here, ultimately a great funk sounding album. Will listen again for obvious reasons

This album is a demonstration in tone. its good, its music

Man, Marvin Gaye is the shit

Whilst listening, 5 women in a 1/4 mile range became pregnant.

Great arrangements, great voice. Weaker songs in the second half.

Marvin Gaye's tone is unmatchable. Not quite a 5 for me personally, but you can't deny the grooviness.

More like 3.6 but he's a legend

12/18 R&B Classic. Standout Tracks: If I Should Die Tonight, Come Get To This, Distant Lover, You Sure Love To Ball

Good groove. Great songs, though not really structured enough for an album. Good background music or something to chill to in an evening setting. I enjoyed the horns a lot, I thought they added a lot of musicality and demension to an otherwise low-key song. To be clear, none of the songs are bad. I just wished for more variety out of the album. I think "Come Get to This" was my favorite.

A nice and chill album. Mr. Gaye likes his shmexy songs...

Sexy time! The song Let's Get It On has become a cliche and is over-used and over-played but the rest of the album was a decent listen.

Melodinga, labai gražus jo balsas.

I'm sorry, but after years of having that opening wah guitar be used as a comical sound cue for sexy times it just makes me laugh inappropriately, a thing you should never do during sex unless you and/or your partner have a very specific fetish.

I know it's good, I can see it's good. I know how important it is to The Culture. I just don't love it.

A legend.

favs: let’s get it on if i should die tonight come get to this distant lover rating 2.5/5

hellz yee

Second Marvin Gaye. I guess that means I'm working my way through his included discography sequentially. I don't recall much from "What's Going On", though the chorus of the title track pops into my head from time to time. I'm expecting this album to just be more competent soul tunes, which admittedly aren't my thing. Still, this album's only half an hour, so what's the worst it could possibly be? Here goes. Yeah, another Marvin Gaye. I didn't care for this one, though it was generally competent and I commend the bite-sized runtime. I can kind of instantly tell how this album is influential. Unless there's a similar-sounding soul album which predates this release, the sensual sounds and stylings of the album are ones that I've heard in plenty of other songs, both through this list and on the radio. This kind of murmury, muddy, bassy sound has certainly become a staple in soul and many of the homage acts in current year appear to take after this specific style of production. I can see the appeal. The funky, bassy percussion has a surprisingly deliberate sound and the many string sections are a welcome addition. Other contributions like the sax numbers and those twinkly-sounding instruments (of which the name obviously escapes me) are also well-paired with the established style. What severely cripples this album for me is the lack of songwriting chops. There is nary a solid vocal hook on this album and Gaye has no sway over these instrumentals, which blueballs me to subzero temperatures. I also don't get much from hearing this grown man wank about on the microphone because that would make me GAY. Overall, this album was fine, though if it were any longer I'd be much less receptive to it. I've heard the title track before. It's the meme song. Anyways, it's alright. Just a perfectly okay tune. I imagine much of the appeal stems from how titillating the song is, though it doesn't really have any purchase with me. From my non-aroused perspective, the music just kind of meanders and neither the lyrics nor the songwriting are particularly effective. The variance in the instrumentation is commendable, though the bass is a little flimsy and there aren't any standout performances in the instrument department. The same can be said about the vocals. Gaye isn't charismatic and the mastering is kind of strange. His vocals don't pair with the instrumentals in a meaningful way, partly due to how limp the songwriting is and partly because of how quiet his vocals are. Still, it's an iconic and recognisable tune, so it wins big on that front. Book time. Less rooted in politics than What's Going On. It was also overshadowed by the aforementioned album in both chart success and critical acclaim, though this is the more genuine and charming release of the two. Wikipedia says this album helped establish Gaye as a sex symbol and was Gaye's most successful outing under the Motown label, which certainly conflicts with what the book says. The album was highly influential among soul musicians, increased the popularity of funk throughout the 1970s and has recieved widespread and enduring acclaim from critics. The success of this album altered how Motown produced their music. The prominent sexual themes of this album lead many others to follow in its direction. The album peaked at No.2 and was the 29th/46th best-selling album of 1973/74. It didn't chart anywhere else, though it managed to shift 100,000 and 45,000 copies in the UK and Denmark respectively. Yep, these are all incredibly solid reasons for this album being in here. I cosign this inclusion.

Great, three songs sound like one long song tho

Classic.

Yeah it is the iconic song but apart from that, pretty lame.

Not my style but I do appreciate it. Like others said, it is very sexy.

Легенда, но так как я такое не слушаю, мне сложно оценить

Opening song is a classic and his voice is so pretty but felt very samey samey throughout

niceee

First song, five stars. Incredible start. The rest of the album, three stars. This is a prime example of why singles were a thing.

tis what it is

Schon sehr bumsig

Classic

J'serais sûrement allé dans le 5 étoiles si y'avait eu plus de tounes sur gettin' it on. 3.49 étoiles

not my style but classic

I mean this was smooth. But it did get a bit samey.

Late night music for when the lights are dimmed...

clásica

Not completely my cup of tea, but I see the appeal.

Good album

This is a concept album where the concept is baby makin' music. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #422 Best Songs Let's Get It On

Wouldn't have chosen it to listen to in general. Enjoyed it, nice for relaxing to and some tracks great to have on in the background.

The album was fine

6/10 - some classic sounds but too heavy on the sex and especially having moaning in skits/songs is just weird

Just a few years before the release of this album, it was a tremendous deal for the Beatles to say ‘turn me on,’ or ‘you turn me on.’ It must have been earth-shattering for a blockbuster record to straight up be audio-porn, with the primary message gently (yet strongly) cooing, let’s get it on. Would we still be listening to songs about holding hands without Marvin, nay, listening to songs about wanting to hold hands? Would ‘I do it for the nookie’ never have surfaced in the pop culture stratosphere??? Over the years, ‘let’s get it on’ has lost some of its, well, potency. A lot of reviews here are like ‘this is sex in music form,’ or (paraphrasing) ‘I had a boner from the moment the needle dropped!’ ‘I came into this record with virgin ears, and came out pregnant with twins!’ I’ve heard the titular (sorry, couldn’t help it) track in so many movies by now, always used in a humorous, faux-sexy situation, and never in a sensual sense, that I just can’t take this seriously. If I played this for my wife to get her in the mood, she’d laugh in my face, and I absolutely wouldn’t get some. I’d have a better shot, I think, with ‘trout mask replica.’ That’s saying a lot! So, for us moderns, major points deducted for how this has faired in culture/I would never consciously listen to this and will probably never put the record on in full again sans irony. Points added, though, for sheer musical talent and for having made a splash on pop culture in the way it did to ultimately deserve becoming a parody of itself. What a paradox! Ok, ‘nuff typing. I’m going to go get laid.

Feels like a mix of jazz, blues, reggae and something more. I love the instrumentals and the rythms. Feels like a 90's romcom somehow.✨️🎲

I love his smooth voice. Only a few hits though.

The title track is a classic. This is the album you put on when you turn the lights down low. Really good album that serves a purpose. Not something you’d listen to in the light of day with the kids in the backseat, though.

(60/100)

I like its vibes and some songs are remarkably good. Nevertheless, I haven't enjoyed it as much as others, maybe I just wasn't in the mood.

What’s Going On is the best Marvin Gaye album IMO

Altijd een feestje om te luisteren naar Marvin

Smooth, sexy, but a bit repetitive

Close to 4

chill romanticon

I feel like this album is more of a straight 5, but it's like, TOO sexy and successful with what it's trying to accomplish, so for my personal rotation it has to be demoted a bit because I want my personal 5s to be anything I'll listen to all the time.

What a great R&B voices. Highlights: Let’s Get It On, Please Don’t Stay ( Once You Go Away), If I Should Die Tonight, Distant Lover. 3.9

sex. wish i could give 3.5/5

A bit ahead of it's time, I see why it is popular and revered, however nothing really stands out to me. Just nice smooth listening.

Love the vibe and almost gives me autumn time type music! Added two songs to my playlist

An easy listen. Would put it on while going about my day, but wouldn't keep my attention the entire time.

I just know a lot of you were conceived to this.

Siinähän se Marvin luritteli. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I'd like to thank Marvin Gaye for spiritually creating Christopher Cross and Michael McDonald 🙏

its not a favorite but it definitely is a golden timeless album. i dont connect with most songs. distant lover my fave.

Love Lets Get It On but think the rest is kinda samey (eeeek, not a popular view). God he can sing though!! And on a second listen it's pretty damn funky (especially Keep Gettin It On)

Album #145 Marvin Gaye: Let’s Get It On I normally quite dislike R&B music, which just sounds like a guy seducing me; however, if I had to listen to the genre, I suppose Marvin Gaye is really the only option (definitely not Andre3000). I’m not even that big of a Marvin Gaye fan, and I enjoy What’s Goin On a lot less than most, but I can’t deny that this album is good. Even though literally every song is about Marvin Gaye trying to fuck, he sings with enough soul that you ignore his insatiable libido. Another plus is that the album is only 30 minutes, so it never has time to outstay its welcome; perhaps that’s just how long Marvin Gaye can last without nutting, which brings upon the end of the album. To be fair to him, 30 minutes of edging is respectable for any man. Best Songs: Let’s Get It On, Distant Lover, Come Get To This Worst Song: You Sure Love To Ball Score out of 10: 7.5

Would give 3.5 if I could.

Nice voice but I kinda wish he'd vary his subject matter

This is way too horny

A good listen, but Marvin Gaye just isn't really my thing. I've never thought to myself, "I could really go for some Marvin Gaye." I don't see that changing.

Wenz: First thought was: Oh, is this the Marvin Gaye in one of the Charlie Puth’s songs. The songs are not really my type, but I still like CP’s Marvin Gaye 😆 Shermz: ohhh so that’s where that classic hook for sexy times comes from 😏 is this jazz?

Nice vocals. Really not my thing.

Easy listening. Sexy music. Not too memorable though but very soulful voice. Does drag a bit but good background music.

Title track obviously great but mostly forgettable after that

This is where Marvin got the reputation. Marvin dealt in vibes -

I love Marvin Gaye, personally I think ‘Sexual Healing’ is maybe the best song ever - so his later albums, I very much look forward to. This album was lovely and had some great tracks, but I’m not sure it’ll be for everyone or is a must listen. I have a feeling some of his later work will be though, so I look forward to them hopefully popping up along the way.

Ууууууаса

Enjoyable enough, although I never really got in to it in the sort of way I hoped. Good length and I might well enjoy it more with repeated listenings.

Great album of odes to carnality but the songs are all at the same tempo and the subject never changes. We get it Marvin, you want to get it on and she loves to ball. There's even a song called "Keep Getting It On" which is basically a reprise of the title track. Still, there are some great slow jams on here and Gaye's voice is a perfect instrument, smooth and silky, going down nice and easy.

beautiful voice lots of sex theming, but not in a repetitive way if i ever have sex i'll spin this :3

3.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/marvin-gaye/lets-get-it-on/ Never my favorite genre, but I do like What’s Going On quite a bit. This one never really reaches those heights for me, although it is a quite entertaining album.

Sort of definitionally sensual. I don't think I'd ever be like today I want to re-listen to this.

It was a very easy album to listen to. It made me uncomfortable at times, but I understand that's the style. The lyrics made me feel flirty and undoubtedly raised the temperature. As for the music, it's very pleasant and soft. I'd put it on to fall asleep if it weren't for the lyrics.

I'd rather have a nice cup of tea.

All these songs sound the same to me.

Smooth sounds from the 70's. The wiki describes Mr Gaye's foray into the steamier side of funk, with his personal experiences with his wife and father's influences. The Moms and Grandmoms of Booktok smut girlies of today had their own erotic influences for sure.

A smooth soul & light funk record focused on sex. A little too focused for me perhaps, but it also made the album a strong cohesive unit. Unsurprisingly the performances by Gaye and The Funk Brothers are super tight - particularly some great singing and great bass.

A great vibe, but did not move me as much as anticipated. His other album is simply better, and I tend to prefer Stevie and Curtis to Gaye, but I still liked it a lot. It's a groovy little record. Standout Tracks: Opener, She Loves To Ball, Distant Lover 3.3

Obvs v strong

not my bag

Baby making music. Right from the top of the album, that intro riff from “Let’s Get It On” lives rent free in my head and likely always will. This is the second of 3 Marvin Gaye albums I have rolled for this project so far, following “What’s Going On”. I love how often I’ve been able to go in order with an artists discography for this project. The RNG gods have been good to me. First observation with this album is that I’m a tad surprised it’s not the highest rated of his albums simply based on including “Distant Lover” and the titular “Let's Get It On”. I’m going to repeat something I said from my last Marvin Gaye review, and largely feel the same about this one. His voice is the biggest draw here. This might be the album with the most amount of children conceived to per capita out of any of them. I mean seriously. God damn does this man’s voice have an effect on me. I mean, the instrumentation on “If I Should Die Tonight” paired with that voice is really something special. I mean quite literally this is just made to be listened to in the bedroom, the very next song is “Keep Gettin’ It On”, lol. Much like his previous album though, you really kind of get the point after a few seconds of listening. All of the songs are quite good, but they blend together in a way that makes it sound fairly samey. I think I actually like this one slightly more than the last one. Could really do without the moaning at the start of “You Sure Love To Ball” though. This album is almost comically short for how packed with bangers it is. 31 minutes and 8 songs. It’s very tight and focused, despite being very samey. That really kind of makes me want to give it a 4, but then I went back to the previous album and saw that it was almost the exact same length and thought better. The 2 are very comparable. Voice is a 5, but there are better Soul albums that have grabbed me more than they both collectively have. I like Marvin Gaye well enough, but I can’t say he really touches me as much as he has others on the site. This is the second album in a row where if I was a reviewer, I’d give it a perfect rating for being so tight, having a great voice, and a great instrumentation. However, personal enjoyment is a 3, and I bet his final album will be as well. To its credit, I did enjoy this more than “What’s Going On”. Both are great, just not always going to be my cup of tea. Favorite song on the album is obviously the titular opener, “Let’s Get It On”. That was never in question. This concludes my review of Sex: The Album.

The opening notes are basically a coda for making happy. It’s that good! The whole albums is a cool listen….its fun to hear the echoes of 60s Motown still here in the music. In the end it’s not an album that goes further than the opening track. It’s cool…but 3 for me.

eigentlich ganz gut

Good stuff

Oh yeah.

C'est soul, c'est chill, c'est culte, mais pas forcément ma came

J’étais persuadée qu’on l’avait déjà écouté.. Sympa… musique de sexe L’autre fois; j’ai vu un documentaire sur lui, c’est un grossier personnage (l’alcool n’aide pas en plus)

Great album to listen to with the right person. Don't recommend for boys trips or prison showers.

A good start to the album with the title track, but even that gets dull quickly. I don't really get anything out of this album at all. Not saying it's bad, but it's not for me.

Amazing album, really great

Highlights: Let's Get It On, If I Should Die Tonight, Distant Lover

Funky A little cheesy Good vocals

a classic album that’s rather samey, probably suffers from my bias thinking things are ‘done’ when they’re the original. do like the genre tho

Guy’s got soul!

Big hitter revved up for the drive home.

It's good but not really my thing. I can't imagine listening to this except for sexy times, and that would feel like a cliche at this point.

A little one note

Me gusta el género, así que fue agradable escuchar el álbum. No me gustan los lentos en estos géneros, por eso la puntuación.

Yep that’s Marvin Gaye alright.

Another one that just doesn’t resonate. Starts off well but fades quickly. 2.5

Now this is classic soul and there is no faulting the song ‘let’s get it on’, which is simply a masterpiece. Unfortunately the rest of the album feels a bit too much one note for my liking. ‘Keep getting it on’ as the tigle suggests tries to rely on the glory of the opening track, but falls short.

I felt like I was intruding on a private moment listening to this album. Obviously it’s Marvin Gaye, so it’s pretty great at a basic level. But it didn’t hit like “What’s Going On?” for me.

I knew i heard that opening song somewhere else. Amazing album

Sexy... saving this for tonight. ;)

It´s the first time I´ve ever heard this album, except for 'Let's get it on'. It is not the kind of music I usually listen to, but I liked it.

まあまあ

This was unexpectedly enjoyable for the sort of smooth soul I'm not usually a fan of. Think Marvin has the perfect voice for this, with a little edge to it where he can add a bit more character to the louder parts. Musically was a good balance between a live sound while still being well recorded. It's still not my preference and I wouldn't intentionally go back to it but of all the albums like this we've had it's my favourite.

Smooth as. Actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. But there are definitely a few extra "let's get it on along" likes on there. I'd had enough by the end and it was very short anyway, not a good sign 2.5

It is indeed an album Best Song: Lets get it on Personal favorite: Distant Lover/You sure love to ball Least/worst: Please don't stay Its pretty uneventful until the second half.

Some smooth tunes, but a little repetitive and just a tad too sexy for me haha

Not his best. The title track is great but are the lyrics a bit manipulative. “We’re all sensitive people, so Let’s Get It On”

This is #day587 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's my first out of three Marvin Gaye records represented on the list. I see where this is all coming from, but I'm just not a fan of soul singing. The jazzy, funky side of the instrumentation is appealing, though. I'm sure it'd sound nice and warm on vinyl. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day588.

Solid album, clean sound. Easy listening.

can my rating by influenced by the high quality reviews given from this group? These reviews are top notch - clever and hilarious. Can't hate the vibes and mood of this.

I mean, it’s good, but it seems like it would be best enjoyed in a specific context, and my wife is out of town this week.

Best Track - "Let's Get It On"

good great iconic not my vibe im so sorry

Good songs on this record, but a lot of filler.

Not ideal work accompaniment music but managed to avoid getting too hot under the collar.

Smooth, but a bit samey.

3.5 - good album

The music is good, the performance is good, the mixing is good, but does Mr. Gaye know how to write songs about anything else? It's 31 minutes of the same song 8 different times. I can say he's definitely good at the 1 thing he does, but no way does it compare the more diverse all timers on here. 3.0/5

I'd listen to this more if people didn't think you were trying to set some sort of mood! 3 - deserves to be on this list

The title track is a classic. Interesting that there's a "Keep Gettin' It On" track too. The rest of the album has the same vibe but the songs don't stand out as much.

Maybe cuz i was in the car w my mom and not a hot man this didnt hit for me as much but i get the hype

Oh thank goodness we’re back to the ‘70s in the land of good music and recordings. This album kind of just went over my head a bit with its steady vamps all album long but there’s a lot of great arrangement and production touches here and there. The vocals are soulful as hell though maybe a bit too yearning at times but I can feel the genuine emotion so it’s all good. Although this album kind of floated by without much to hold onto on the first listen, it’s still a pretty interesting take on soul music and I’m just so relieved to be back in this era after enduring another crappy album from the ‘90s yesterday.

Oh yeah let's get sexy today. Everyone knows Gaye's singing but the backing instrumentals are great.

A few standout tracks, and then a lot of songs that all sound a lot alike. Good, but not great.

Pure sex. Not much more to say, some nice songs on a short album. Easy listen but nothing special.

I don’t know how to rate this one, he’s got a great voice there’s no denying that. The album just kinda sounded repetitive, I tapped out halfway thru

It was alright yeah

Banger

Very short album.

Música para hacer el amor

Classic

Was ok

Interesujące

Me hizo bajar 10 cambios este album , muy chill me gustó

Was an easy listen, nothing that blew my mind. Wasn’t bad.

good shit if a little sappy

Man, this guy knows what he's about. Good sound, consistent message, cool album.

A tight little album. Does what it needs to do and does not over stay it's welcome.

it was nice in all honesty, this album might not have been marvins finest though as i didnt find the songs that interesting except for the last. but thats only my opinion

Good album definetly, bit the songs kind of blend into eachother, not a lot of variety here. If you loke one song you'll like every other song. Favorites: -Keep gettin' it on -Distant Lover

Powerful voice. Definitely a theme album ,carried by 'let's get it on'. Romance.

okay Marvin!

Cheesy as it is, if "let's get it on" doesn't get you in the mood, what will? Otherwise, this album is mostly pretty bad.

The only thing hornier than this album is it's reviews.

Smoooooth.

Definitely better than some of the other ones I have given 3 stars, because I really like Marvin Gaye, but this album doesn’t stand out to me like his others

I've never listened to much Marvin Gaye, but I have always known he's regarded as music royalty. This album was a vibe all the way through, but I can't think of a time where I'd throw it on or fit it into the rotation.

Exactly the music you expect from Marvin Gaye

Awesome, not really in a slow/quiet mood today but on slower days I can see myself listening to some of the songs on the album or the album itself on loop. Favs: Please don't stay Keep getting it on Distant lover

хороший альбом, но не мое, не на постоянной основе слушать. пойдёт для семейного отдыха поставить на фон

Fainut

Great singing. Good length for me too, not too long.

Apparently Marvin is as one note as Biggie, except Marvin wants to make love instead.

There’s none better than Margin Gaye’s song Let’s Get It On. His soulful voice, over a sultry mix of drums, horns and guitar while he’s passionately pleading to “get it on” is as soothing as it must have been provocative at the time of its release. So good. So good. The rest of the album takes a back seat to the opening song, but it is filled with R&B songs of love and desire. Gaye is thought to be a pioneer in the Soul music genre and you can see those roots growing here in this album.

Let’s Get it On and then a bunch of other songs that want to be Let’s Get it On. One song does not a great album make. Sonic sexual harassment.

Tell you what....if this album doesn't set the mood for you, not sure what will.

easy to listen to, feel good music. obviously i have heard marvin gaye before but it's still nice.

I don't like Marvin Gaye as much as most people but this is probably better than What's Going On for me, it's somewhat interesting and some good songs here for sure

Have I listened to this album before?
No How familiar am I with this album? Somewhat familiar, I know the title track How do I feel about this artist? Not an avid listener but I enjoy Marvin Gaye when I hear him
How was it to listen to? Very easy listen, super smooth Favorite song(s)? Let's Get it On, an obvious choice but a classic for a reason Overall Thoughts: Musically speaking it was a very pleasant listen, but lyrically it was very sexual in nature (as it’s known to be) and I personally just do not relate to that, but I do see why this album is considered a classic.

I rate this album 7/10, it was a genre I don’t really listen to so it as fun to hear a new style of music and I like the energy of this album 3/5

This isn't my cup of tea, but it's no doubt talented. He has a GREAT voice and the songs are so well crafted. I love all the textured voices and harmonies.

Vert laid back easy music. Very easy to lean back and chill to the music

All the same vibe, very specific vibe

Did not add any to library. I like his voice and the groovy sounds. This is definitely a sex album, I imagine many tens of thousands of people alive today were conceived to this album. 2/5 personally but 4/5 for voice/music, so a solid 3/5.

top 3 - Keep Gettin’ It On, Come Get To This, Let’s Get It On.

He of course had a great voice and this is good background music for a nice evening but would I listen all the time?

The title track is a clear 5, the rest of it not quite as good. I’ve rated 3 but really it’s a 3.5
