I didn’t listen to it all but I do like what I heard

I tried, I really did. And Marvin’s undoubtedly got a great voice, and the opening title track is a stone cold classic. But after that, I found it impossible to listen without switching off and drifting away. Even if I’d been earning £1 for every time I heard the phrase ‘get (or getting) it on’ I don’t think I could have stayed focused. Maybe that’s a good thing but it’s all a bit samey from one track to the next. Lush strings, amazing vocals, but I couldn’t help feeling I was giving sugar lumps to a one trick pony. Which is a shame, because the first track Spotify grew up when the album finished was What’s Going On which shows a much different (better?) side to Mr Gaye.

I wanted to love this, truly. Marvin’s smoky voice and troubled soul made him an icon but these “sexy toons” just left me cold. 30 odd minutes of it left me feeling dirty and not in a good way. It sounds sleazy rather than sensual; the type of LP men would slide on to ‘impress the ladies’. The songwriting is lame, the production overblown. It’s no rightful heir or What’s Goin On.

The lyrics of the second track don't seem to match the title at all - was that intentional? Anyway, aside from the opener I wasn't familiar with any of these songs. I am sure What's Goin' On will be in this list at some point, and I like that album better than this one.

4/5. After reading some context in regards to Marvin's life, these songs are much more powerful. It is a therapeutic process of a man recognizing his worth and that his past trauma does not define him. You almost can hear that he is not talking to anyone in particular, but rather using his voice and music to move through these emotions. As far as the full album goes, it's powerful and he takes his time with each one, but it does slow down way too much at certain times that takes away from the experience. It's a great album but it does not land all the way through. Best Song: Let's Get It On, If I Should Die Tonight, Distant Lover

Zeggen dat dit album wat gladjes is, is een aardig understatement. Ik ben hier helemaal niet van, die gladde soul-jazz-rnb haast porno-achtige meuk, maar als je het dan toch moet luisteren is dit wel met uitstek hét album. Met een krappe 32 minuten houdt ome Marvin het ook keurig netjes binnen de lijntjes en dat maakt dat dit zeker een goed album is. Zoals ik vaker zeg is dit dus niet helemaal aan mij besteed, maar voor een keertje helemaal prima. 3,5 tot 4 sterren. En toch voel ik me vies als dit luister.

This is now the 3rd album by Marvin Gaye that I've listened to as part of this project. That's all of them from the list. The music is soft and gentle and very soulful. I can't listen to that all the time. Too much of that sweet enamel gives me a toothache. But in the right mood and in between, I really like the music. 4/5

Let’s Get It On is a classic and while I liked the sound/vibes of the other songs, none of them really stood out to me. 3.5 Stars

Ooohh so sweet. Takes me into a time warp of a mid-70s summer groove. The sound is perfection. Mr. Gaye is buttery smooth and so so horny. I had to laugh when I thought “this one track is beautiful, soulful - what’s it called?” and it was “You Sure Love to Ball.” Yeah you do.

Marvin’s sexual prowess on full display, a full half hour album dedicated to fucking, basically. The funk pops right off the page with this one, and Marvin’s vocal range is incredible. The backing band are on point for the entire album, and it’s a true joy. I wouldn’t say my favorite album of his, but a classic indeed.

Didn’t like this one as much. I don’t think it aged as well - the music sounds dated. Didn’t feel as alive. Seemed a simple appeal to sex, without meaning.

This album is go damn good I don't even mind that Marvin couldn't even make it to Side B before ripping off the title/opening track with "Keep Gettin' It On." An absolute master at the height of his powers. I don't recommend listening to "You Sure Love to Ball" at work, though.

Just okay, a bit samey throughout

It's the title track and the only Marvin Gaye I know, but Let's Get It On! Gaye's voice is obviously fantastic and this album wraps you up like a warm blanket. It's a little slow for my taste but it's definitely a nice listen. Instrumentally this is a nice album as well. It's got tight drums, funky wah-wah guitar riffs, sax, and piano parts a-plenty. And clocking in at about 32 minutes, it's a perfect taste of everything. Standouts for me were: "Let's Get It On," "Keep Gettin' It On," "Distant Lover," and "You Sure Love To Ball." Honestly, any of the tracks could be standouts on this one with the exception of the final song, which was kind of a slow bummer at the end of a very good album. I went into this listen thinking it would be a straightforward 3 star experience: very likeable with some good fun tracks that I enjoyed but probably wouldn't revisit too much, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun I had with it. Enough that I think it's a clear 4 star album. I would definitely put this whole album on again, but I'd have to be in the right sorta mood...

Wow! How many babies have been made to this album! So smooth!

What’s Going On is one of the greatest albums of all time, with searing social commentary about racism, corruption and the state of the planet, so it seems a little bit of a step back for the follow up to be a short album about (and let’s be blunt here) making sweet, sweet love. I mean, it’s not subtle - the opening track gets straight to the point and immediately proposes getting it on. At least let me take my coat off first Marvin, and a bottle of wine and some flowers might be nice too. It seems that the object of Marvin’s lust might have felt the same as he has to beg them to stay on the next track. However, the rest of the album quickly returns to the hot and steamy stuff with the erm, climax, being the tracks ‘You Sure Love to Ball’ and ‘Just to Keep You Satisfied’. Well, quite. However, if you are looking for an album to inspire some sexytimes and the object of your affections is similarly broad minded and in the mood, then this might a good choice.

Yet another "smooth" album. I'd rather prefer when he has something to say.

The one-two punch of let's get it on and keep getting it on are almost too much for me. This guy loves to get it on. Great vibe and overall feel of the albums, fun bass, guitar, strings and horns. Really enjoyable album overall. Can definitely see myself getting it on to this. Very classy album given the subject matter.

Album was pretty good. Instrumentals were nice and his voice is great. All songs were pretty similar in subject matter and sound. Project was only 31 minutes but seemed way longer. Not my cup of tea. 2.5/5

Hilarious album. Has there ever been an album as solely dedicated to fuckin as this one? I did not know we were getting a sequel to “Let’s get it on” 3 songs after the original but I’m glad we did. Also enjoyed “you sure love to ball”. PS - the site messed up my last review by pasting in my review of that R&B album. My thoughts are pretty similar to Mits FM though, but a little more tepid on the album in general. 10th ave freeze-out definitely the highlight

An easy one to love. The ingredients are a perfect gumbo: fantastic songwriting expressing every form of yearning and sex, top notch arrangements sung by on of the best voices in all of music. Not one track should be skipped. A classic.

This seemed long for a 32-minute album. And, despite the great title track, I can't give a fourth star to any album with a song entitled "You Sure Love to Ball."

This is the first of three Marvin Gaye albums in this collection, and what a classic. I've never listened much to his music aside from the radio (and movie) classics, so it's nice to hear nearly an entire album's worth of less-familiar tracks. And since this was apparently his sex album (as opposed to his politics album "What's Going On?", which I'm looking forward to listening to), it's got a heaping serving of smooth Gaye to make the medicine go down. Aside from the familiar title track, I also enjoyed its sequel, "Keep gettin' it on", as well as the aptly titled "You sure love to ball". I can see why this helped make him into a sex icon, but I'm not sure why the Wikipedia entry claims this was his first foray into funk, as it's not very apparent across the album (to me at least). And while the album undoubtedly was quite suggestive for its time, it's kind of funny to read that a reviewer felt that this was "one of the most erotic recordings known to mankind." But big kudos to Marvin Gaye for the T.S. Eliot reference to "birth and death and copulation" on the gatefold sleeve!

Oh Marvin, I'm sorry, you're wonderful but "You Sure Love to Ball" really creeps me out, though "Let's Get It On" is great. Splitting the difference at a 3.

Solid all the way through. Good for relaxing times

Let's Get It On, another soul album with the title track hitting lead-off. What an incredible song. You can not listen to this song and not feel like getting it on. Teddy Pendergrass heard Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away) and knew he'd be a star one day. Why do all of his albums have full tracks that amount to the codas for extended cuts of the big hits. It feels like the creativity of 60s Motown Soul with a more pop sensibility loses something in the 70s albums. Distant Lover is a great song...unfortunately the best version is widely known not to be the album version but the live version from the Oakland Coliseum. Marvin Gaye is overrated. I love soul music and Marvin Gaye produced some of my favorite jams of all time, but his two most critically acclaimed records have some hits and a lot of mediocre or worse filler. You Sure Love to Ball was a single? It's a little on the nose, even for someone who sided with Jodeci in the Jodeci vs. Boys II Men debate. One hit, one good song done better live and mediocrity or worse after.

This will be a breeze to listen to. Marvin Gaye consistently creates pleasant tunes to lay back and just enjoy. Feels like he rarely puts a foot wrong. I have listened to a fair amount of his music before so I know what I'm getting into. Let's Get It On The sex song. Memed to death for its smoothness and cheesy blatant sexuality. Remains memorable in spite of the memes and mockery. And I do think the song is used as a joke simply because it's so good at what it's trying to do. Absolutely iconic from start to finish. A fine performance which enhances what is fairly basic writing. Marvin Gaye's voice just enhances the song so much. Sexy, sensual with the dated production and instrumentation adding charm to the track. One of the great horny songs of all time. 5/5 Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away) The desperate pleading is honestly pretty charming. The background vocals are great. I think the band does a great job creating that unique Marvin Gaye RNB sound. A solid song which puts me in a good move. Love the instrumentation. Enthralling performance. Greatm 4.5/5 If I Should Die Tonight Opens very abruptly after the first track. The transition is not smooth at all. I like the mix. The keys and violin sit just right in the background. Great bass, decent sax. Lush and powerful. Great song structure, keeps me intrigued throughout. Passionate delivery on the chorus. Good. 4/5 Keep Gettin' it On The sex song 2: electric boogaloo. Infectious charisma, can't help but smile at the cheesiness. The control he has of his voice is just unlimited as to how impressive it is. It's so cheesy, but I'm having a great time. 4.5/5 Come Get To This Love the way the song opens. The background harmonies create a delicious atmosphere. A completely different rhythm and tempo. Don't really like the loud sharpness of the drums, might be a fault of the mix. The background sax absolutely shreds. Not his best track, but the quality's still there. 3.5/5 Distant Lover The chimes are fabulous. Meanders a bit, the verse is slightly messy. Not crazy about the background vocals. The strings and brass instruments create a moment of magic in the instrumental. Great singing as always. The song sounds large and grand. Lovely ending. Good. 4/5 You Sure Love To Ball Fantastic bass work. Not a fan of how the vocal melody evolves. The way he resolves the main vocal line is a bit flat and uninteresting. When they play with the vocal layering with the repetitive chorus playing is really good. Decent. 3.5/5 Just Keep You Satisfied. Some of the lyrics are a bit terrible. The performance oozes soul and desire. He sounds like he knows he was born to do this, the confidence in his own ability is admirable. Background harmonies sound fantastic. The sparseness of the instrumental is a bit of a let down, but it does highlight some great bass tones, and is an effective closer. Feels sentimental and sufficiently powerful. Decent. 3.5/5 While never reaching quite the heights of "What's Going On" or "I Want You" I still think this album deserves its plaudits even if it's only based on performances alone. Feels warm and makes me happy in the same ways other projects of his do. I just love how in tune Marvin Gaye is with his band, and how much they do to enhance the sound of his marvelous performances. Nie było to takie odkrycie jak "What's going on", ale to wciąż kawał pożądnego soulu i pościelowej muzyki. Zaskakująco spicy jak na jego chrześcijański gospel z tego drugiego albumu. Czarne chrześcijaństwo jest całkiem fajne w tym, jak ludzkie potrafi być. Solidne 3, jak będę miał ochotę na soul to pewnie jeszcze kiedyś posłucham.

Ten krążek wszedł na ostro. Każdą piosenkę poczułem głęboko w sobie i doszedłem do jednego wniosku - nie wiem co wygórowanego mogę napisać o albumie o jebalnictwie. Ale 5/5 - klasyka.

I mean... It's very sexually-minded. An album to make love to your lady/gentleman by. But this album has been so influential (and thus deserving of its place on this list) that it's really become the blueprint of a trope that's been hard to take seriously since Flight Of The Conchords' "Business Time".

I enjoyed this album

Tragic hottie Marvin Gaye - this is the third album I've listened to from him this month and the more I get into him the more I want to dive deeper into his legacy and lore. Yes this album invented the sound of sex on wax, but the inspiration was Marvin navigating his own sexuality that had been corrupted and stigmatized by his abusive father. That relationship famously ended as poorly as a father-son relationship can end. It's a shame that "Let's Get It On" basically became a meme song, like it plays during Super Bowl commercials for Hot Pockets, because it's a great fucking song but it's almost embarrassing to listen to out loud at this point. The rest of the album is also excellent. I think I slightly prefer "What's Goin' On" but I wouldn't kick this out of bed.

Marvin Gaye is soul personified, what a voice. It's silky smooth. The actual album itself starts off strong with 'Let's Get It On' which is an absolute classic. It's brilliantly sung, catchy, soulful and Marvin doesn't sound like he's just jamming and riffing over the music like in other tracks. For example 'Keep Gettin' It On' acts as a sequel to the opener. It's essentially a reprise. Musically the same song with changed lyrics that sound loose and free. It's almost a waste of a track in all honesty. The first half is much better than the second. 'If I Should Die Tonight' is the best track other than the opener. Marvin really shows off his vocal prowess here. Overall it does get a little samey, but thankfully it's only just over half an hour long. I'll give it a generous three stars, two for the music and an extra one for Marvin Gaye's voice.

"Please Let's Have Sex - The Song" is funny, because in the first minute he says he won't push, but the song goes on begging for another 4 minutes. At least the music is comfy, even if the lyrics aren't.

Marvin Gaye possessed the ability to convey raw emotions through his smooth vocals, captivating melodies, and lyrics while creating one of the greatest soul albums in history. Each track on the album is filled with a groove that is lush and often enhanced by a soulful horn section. Notable songs, including the title track "Let's Get It On" and "Distant Lover, remain among the best soul songs ever recorded. Despite being over 50 years since its release, the album remains relevant, feels fresh and continues to evoke an emotional responses. This album is truly timeless. While Justin Timberlake may have claimed to be bringing sexy back. He was mistaken. Sexy never left.

Instant feel-good vibes with the first track, then it gets a bit bland

this is the legendary follow-up to What's Going On, an album that's just as relevant today as it was in 1971. it's a magical combination of timeless music with a political angle that only grows stronger and more prescient over the decades. Let's Get It On is, obviously, not nearly as concerned with the issues of the day, but in a way, it's just as timeless and relevant as What's Going On. few topics, especially in American culture, are more universal than sex! Marvin Gaye's liner notes give me the impression that this was an album he made to heal from his sexual trauma and repression; you can hear the weight falling off his shoulders as he careens over these tracks. What's Going On might be notable for its songwriting prowess, but Let's Get It On captures Gaye in the raw. the songs are much simpler, but that simplicity serves the sexual theme, giving him plenty of room to feel out each lyric and phrase. everything is super groovy, and deeply intimate. this is definitely a step in a new direction from what Motown had become known for, and I'm glad they gave Gaye the creative liberty to make it happen! we have a whole host of funky, loose, jam-session-like soul and R&B albums to thank him for. strong 8/10.

A classic, a great addition to my 70s/80s playlist. Can't beat a good bit of Marvin Gaye. Best song on the album is If I Should Die Tonight.

Arguably one of the best R&B/Soul albums. Influenced so much of the genre, timeless.

It's love making music, so pop a few Viagra and have a blast! If you're not otherwise occupied it can get a little boring but overall not bad.

An album that exists in multiple levels. It’s obviously horny as hell, but there is the layer of Gaye coming to terms with his own childhood abuse and trying to heal. There’s a lot here, but for me it still got caught up in the funk soul cliches of the 70s. Those musical things don’t resonate with me, and make it hard for me to fully connect with an album like this.

This album really was pretty good, as the critics all seem to purport. This isn’t the type of music I normally listen to, but I can see putting it on from time to time just to mellow out a bit. I could do without the moaning sounds at the beginning of “You Sure Love to Ball” (I always hate this effect, and the title and lyrics could be a bit more subtle as well). Even though this is a blatant sex album, I quite enjoyed it and give it four stars.

The perfect record for valentine’s day. An album of unabashed odes to straight up raw dogging it shouldn’t be as good as this, but Marvin’s got the juice to make it work. Smooth as hell vocals from Motown’s golden boy and Jamerson’s unmistakable thumping bass, this is one sexy half hour ride. I could have done without the bongos and the tambourine: the unsexiest of all the instruments.

Some great tracks but a bit boring compared to his other albums

I remember when my grandma was moving and we found her old record player with this record still in it. Now that she’s gone it’s beautiful to hear this record and hear the beauty in it that I know she heard listening to it for all those years. RIP Grandma and RIP Marvin Gaye!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️— 4[.4] of 5 stars THIS THING GROOVAY. In all seriousness, this thing is an amazing collection of 8 solid, chill, relaxing tracks. Love the horns and funky guitars on this, and his insanely smooth and soulful vocals, along with his amazing songwriting just puts the icing on the cake. From those iconic first 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 😜 notes at the beginning of the title track to the delicate strings and vocals at the end, this album offers a level of “feel” and in-the-zone-ness (is that a word??) that I honestly really enjoyed. I also loved a lot of the more subdued, emotional parts of this album (for example, IISDT and Distant Lover). Favourites: If I should Die Tonight⭐️, Let’s get it on (iconic), Distant Lover. Dislikes: You Sure Love to Ball (NEOT a fan of those “sound effects” at the beginning)

Ugh Marvin Gaye is the coolest. Really enlightening knowing the sexual content was a way to cope with childhood trauma. Also "quiet storm" is an amazing sub genre. I want to know what he's doing in the album art. I love this album.

Smooth voice and a lot of heart

A little odd as this is a part of my "first thing in the morning" routine but it is a wonderful album. I'm not sure who had the more tragic end of life between him and Sam Cooke. On the subject of the music, well, its sublime. The lyrics are a little cheesy but that both to be expected of the genre and he does them credit in his cadence and voice.

Again so much here. It's so hard to separate his violent death, his beating by his father as he grew up. What a wonderful LP. Greasy A/F! Well produced, like the big bass and percussion. Liked "Ball" & "On". The LP flowed from song to song. As a little kid I recall Marvin's skull cap and took to sporting one too.

As a teenager at the geight of grunge and nothing was cool with my male friends I put on this album at a party full of girls who did have wider taste of music to show them how sophisticated at love I really was, am and always will be even though I'd never listen to the album before. It was my ears that lost their virginity that night.

If this album doesn't make you smile when it comes up, that's too bad, because it's a masterpiece. I've owned this lp for years but I don't remember where I got it and it doesn't have a cover. I've listened to it a lot though. 540 albums in with the generator and this one's a highlight.

Accurate album description. Some great tunes arrangements and playing) and others less so

Besides the opener that is frankly impossible for me to take seriously anymore, this is an incredible listen. Distant Lover, Keep Gettin It On, and pretty much every other song is a delightful combination of Marvin's old style with new funk attitudes. Just a shame the title track is a punchline too often today.

What a great ‘mood’ record this is, from clearly a man who was deeply in love at the time. From the fantastic backing singer group to the exceptionally timed horn section moments, and a voice that oozes emotion. What a great and timeless record this is.

Incredibly sexy and smooth, Martin has some banging vocals!! Sweet, sensual and romantic. I liked it, it's so very groovy. I'd definitely dance to this, what's interesting is that the album is pretty short! Although I think it does alot with so little. The instrumentals are great and they really translate the sensuality and longing. My favorites have to be "You Sure Love To Ball" "Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)" and finally, "Distant Lover", probably means I enjoy the slower and tender side of these love songs more.

Yay! Our last Marvin Gaye album was just a week or so ago, so we get to think comparatively! My favorite way to form thoughts around music!!! This does share many similarities on sonics with What's Going On, but where it differs is that most songs here are really in the pocket - theres just a bit more groove to provide some backbone to the songs. That's not true for everything though, which allows me to talk about my favorite song on here. "If I should die tonight" is just so beautiful in it's sentiment and execution. The swelling strings and horns, the light, plucky guitars fading in and out, and Marvin putting his whole heart and soul into the vocal performance. Wow, such a pretty pretty pretty song! Another highlight, "You sure love to ball" gets back into the more groovy (and almost bossanova) territory - and I think its a nice microcosm of the other change this album sees in comparison to Whats Going On; there's no social outcrying here. It's just one smooth love song after another. Love proclamations and grapplings with ones feelings surrounding a lover, these are what we get treated to on this record.

Disappointed. Meandering without rhythm or melody. ‘Keep gettin it on’ made me think the whole album was conjured up to support the only good track on the album.

A bit samey for me, but I don't think the atmosphere of a frigid dog walk was the right one for it's sexy vibes. I can imagine it has a time and place. Wins points for an objectively great voice and some lovely arrangements, particularly liked Just to Keep you satisfied. Hadn't heard Distant Lover before and liked that track a lot. 6 on 10.

A Soul staple and classic. This album should be included in sex education classes. It's worth noting that it requires some supplementary items to be fully enjoyed: a home cooked dinner, a bottle of your favourite wine, appropriate mood lighting, and a Fine Piece of Ass. 4.5/5

Look, I get that Marvin Gaye is a legend. But a full album of slow-burning love ballads just isn’t for me. It’s basically 30 minutes of bedroom music, and that’s being generous with the variety. Every track feels like it’s stuck in the same mood, and after a while, it all blends together. That said, I’ll give Marvin credit for keeping it short. He got in, whispered sweet nothings, and got out. For the short runtime alone, I’ll bump it up a star. Favorite Song: Let's Get It On Least Favorite Song: You Sure Love To Ball
