classic stuff.... 4 stars
Sexy
Great mellow listening album. Smooth and funky.
So much better than the last Marvin Gaye album I heard. Leagues ahead. Beyond just “Let’s Get It On” the rest of the songs were just beautiful. 8/10
Now THIS is Marvin Gaye in his prime. God this album was one of the smoothest ones in history and still is to this day. Just an amazing listen where I couldn't help but close my eyes and move along to the beat. Only knock on this is that I wouldn't listen to Marvin Gaye in my usual rotations but still a banger. 8/10
Love Marvin. He was a wonderful singer and gone too soon
Very funky. Very groovy. But the subject matter is very repetitive.
Sex but like musically
4/5
Delightful.
It was good I guess. It sounded nice, but I didn’t really like any of the songs besides the first one. I think you need to be in the right mood for this one.
enjoyed it. some sons on there i haven't heard before.
Hebbo such a sensual music and such a freaking smooth voice. A legend
The epitome of love making music 7/10
Feels like the pop culture over saturation of thia one has made it less fun to listen to.
Quite raunchy, love the sound though. Nice short pop album. His voice is good.
It's unreal how smooth this guy was. The title track is a stone cold classic but everything else holds up too. A simple and short track list with no filler.
I have a lot to say about this album. First of all, it definitely deserves to be on the list. Marvin Gaye is arguably one of the most iconic soul singer-songwriters of all time, and Let's Get It On is one of his most iconic songs and albums. Does the quality line up with the impact though? Yeah. It does. The best thing about this album is easily the singing. It is immensely satisfying to listen to. The writing is solid. One thing that would normally be a huge turn-off for me is just how much this album is trying to be a turn-on, if you know what I'm saying. Yeah, this album is very suggestive, but hear me out. You could look at these songs all having the unifying theme of sex and ask "Is that all he knows how to sing about?" However, you could also view this as a concept album. And you know what, it does a good job with that concept. If I wasn't a total virgin, I would totally have sex to this entire album. The subject matter of the album was not only groundbreaking for the time, but it also meant a lot to Marvin Gaye himself. Knowing what Marvin Gaye had to go through in his life makes this album feels a lot more personal than it would with any other artist. So, honestly, I look at this album and say, "Here is an artist making an album about a subject that people didn't want him to care about. He takes the idea, runs with it, and presents it all in a very beautiful way." Overall, I think this album is quite good. 4/5.
Sexy
Loved it! I justlove Whats Going On even more. :D
Vermakelijk. 4/5.
A master of romantic soul to be sure, but in listening to an entire album it began to sound all the same to me. We all pick favorites in any album I suppose, and that was the case for me with this one.
Great voice. Very soothing.
Gaye is just great. I don’t think this is his best work, but that’s not saying much. This was a nice smooth experience, reminding me I need to listen to more of him.
While listening to this album I learned that Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his father.
Decent!
Yes let's
Wowwee
I have listened many times love it
Sex SELLS.
Let’s Get It On // Please Don’t Stay // Distant Lover //
Sexy time. 4 stars.
Oooooh yeah j’ai du sexy soul dans mes oreilles
HORNY: Oml what was Gaye thinking when he made this. The man just wanted to be fucked and fuck hard. Aside from that it was very solid with that soul vibe to it which is very solid. Turned me on a little.
3.8/5 Best Track: Come Get This
Amazing to think that Washington DC's native son, Gaye, dropped this album just one year after the incredible album "What's Going On". It goes to show how productive he truly was with a huge amount of energy and creativity. It's not exactly my favorite of his music, but it is way up there. Easy to listen to, with just a little cheese, it's an album I probably should listed to more. Keep Gettin it On is a highlight with a still fresh sound. Strings and orchestral accompaniments are all hallmarks of this period of his music and I am basically here for all of it.
Great heavy romance album from the early 70's but what does that title really mean "You Sure Love To Ball" ... mmmh?
4.5 if I could
It was really fun
Nice sound. More romantic and less social commentary than the other album from Marvin Gaye I received. I do prefer that album to this one. 4
The epitome of slow jams. Sounds great throughout. A bit repetitive at times, but very easy to vibe to.
It's very short. A quarter of the album is Leys Get it On or a reprise of it. But it's also very very good.
LGIO is about as strong an opener as it gets. Fantastic album overall from a legend.
It's hard not to see Marvin Gaye's influence in music after listening to this album. It may not be his magnum opus, but it strives to be just as good as What's Going On with a little more levity. It's a short, sweet album that is more than easy to listen to. Highlight: Let's Get It On Lowlight: You Sure Love To Ball Surprise Hit: Come Get To This
Let’s Get It On and Distant Lovers are great. Last song is the worst one. Ez 4.5
Not a style of music I would listen to on a regular basis but this is much better soul music than the other ones on this list so far. I like that he does his own background vocals.
A silky smooth classic, just not quite my preferred style. I will attempt to make children to at least thee of these songs with the wife.
Peak Gaye vibes
It's fun to see the genesis of the quiet R&B ballads that'll be more prominent later in the 70s here; shame I don't like those quite as much.
Not as musically exploratory as What's Going On, but he took Al Green's subtle erotica and cranked it to 11. His voice still carries everything and the musicianship is tight shit from the funk brothers, but overt themes of sex and love dominate over the powerful political messages. It's definitely a cohesive suite of songs about yearning (and fucking), with Let's Get It On is the high point (and by extension, Keep Gettin' it On). I don't typically prefer the soul slow jams, but those vocal harmonies on Just To Keep You Satisfied are worth it.
-1 star because I'm pretty sure by "It" he means s*x
I mean it’s Marvin Gaye, you can’t help but enjoy his music.
The horniest album of all time
It was good background music but it was hard to work out to
något svag fyra men jag känner mig givmild.
Good
What is it about Soul music being such a comfy warm blanket in the winter times? Or is it because Marvin Gaye is known for wearing beanies? Strong 4 to light 5.
while “what’s going on” was certainly a more impactful album and was about humanity and our relationship with earth, “let’s get it on” is more about interpersonal relationships and deals with love, loss, and lust. marvin gaye was very in touch with his emotions and was a master at not just connecting through his lyrics, but also in his tone. for my money, he was the best of his generation in his genre. a true legend taken far too soon.
Boomer moment: this is REAL music
Good vibes, I understand why people really enjoy, but I feel like every song is leading up to something and never gets there.
I initially didn't like this one because the majority of the first half felt weak to me, but it grew on me a lot after my second/third listens. I think it benefits from considering it in the context of Marvin Gaye's own personal life and biography as well as considering it within the broader musical developments of the 60s and early 70s. It's obviously a very important album for Marvin Gaye's own public image and it shows a greater experimentation with funk, sexuality and sensuality, etc. I think the second half is clearly the stronger side, but like... the first half kicks off with Let's Get It On.... hard to top that one!! Also it's so so funny to end your crazy horny album with a divorce song. Top songs: Let's Get It On (haven't listened to the lyrics on this one in a long time but MAN!! crazy ass charisma) and Come Get to This. It's a four stars but imo a very low four stars, benefitting mostly from the title, from the context, and from the fact that Marvin Gaye can sing the hell out of a song, no matter how repetitive it might feel.
sexy
Classic Marvin Gaye sex music
Start the fireplace, pour some wine, turn this on softly in the background. Oh, and hopefully your partner is with you too.
I had a good time.
Solid album. Really something you should listen to before die
4.2/5 - i feel so sexy
Loving this album. Makes me want to dance in the kitchen or lounge on the couch and have an upbeat convo. It also made me want to keep listening to this genre of music for the rest of the day.
This is a classic for a reason. The vocals are phenomenal, the instrumentation is lush and smooth. The production is still incredible to this day.
So much sex song. Of course, I'd listen to him sing the dictionary. I wonder if that shit ever really works with the ladies?
Big ballin
A good album but feels a bit inapropriate to listen to at work or in public
Nice, chill. And the principal song, lmao
Hard to not compare this to What's Going On, not as good but still a solid soul album
As clichéd and overplayed as the title track Let's Get It On has become, it is one hell of an iconic song. It really made it's mark on modern pop culture. The rest of the album is great too, with tight runtime and excellent production, Marvin's vocals really are the star here. It's a great album, from one of the greatest R&B/soul voices of a generation.
Classic album weer, wel veel seks muziek 6.5/10
wow wow wow wow
Abrupt start to "If I Should Die Tonight", could queue it lower or work on a smoother transition from "Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)" Cohesive sound. Beautiful sax and orchestra. High vocals and soft. Smooth Soul and R&B. Pretty sensual for it's time.
Such a cool album, fun to listen to with some certified classics! I wouldn't say its a perfect album but it is an easy 4/5 stars. Best song - Keep gettin it on
music to get laid by. Marvin is awesome, lets get it on.
I liked this album. Why not get it on?
Iconic. Instantly recognizable, the title track is an amazing and unforgettable song - silky smooth, sexually charged, and incredibly moving. The latter tracks are slightly less memorable but nonetheless smooth and passionate.
- sexy
go on marvin, write a whole album about sex. in seriousness, this was just a solid, well-paced album. vocals are wonderful, instrumentation was great.
Pretty good.
Come over here, I’m feelin’ romantical. Marvin Gaye definitely gettin’ it on for this album. Good vibes and nice tracks, nothing incredible but I can’t complain either.
Super voz 8 temas en media hora Divertido de escuchar Buen cierre en falsetto
Delightful. Sounds great. I’m not sure, but this album might be about sex.
great soul classic - respect it but not my genre of choice
I can appreciate this is good music but not something I see myself revisiting.
Smooth
Smooth.
Maximum sexiness
It's good! A lot of it feels the same, but I see why this is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. It is very sex-heavy, and I like that the album sticks to that theme with every song. I had only heard a couple of songs beforehand, and they weren't even my favorite songs on the album. The smooth backing vocals >>>. It is not the genre of music I would normally listen too though.
IS there a more iconic album/song opening. I thought this might be the Rolling Stone #1 album, but that was What's Going On - which I agree is good, but I think I enjoy Let's Get It On more, especially for casually listening. Bias: love a 45-min-or-less album
I think I’m pregnant now, and I’m a middle-aged dude. How can you follow up a bonafide masterpiece? You really can’t, unless you’re Marvin Gaye, and even then it’s gotta be the grooviest, sexiest, most seductive bassline under the smoothest vocal you’ve ever heard. This is that. 4/5
Top
Just awesome production and such a smooth listen.
Pure sex
Good, classic song, surprisingly short album
Funky and Lo fi. Lyrically I don't care, but there are tasty little shimmers and musical touches everywhere that i have seen echoed in other music, that pull inspiration from here.
I like it, I wouldn't it hear it all the time tho
Silky smooth easy listening. Pleasant music and voice. Love/Sensual songs - timeless
Yup. Very good. 4 very strong stars (not 5 because it simply isn’t the music I seek out, but obviously an all time classic).
Direkte Erinnerung an die King of Queens Folge im Apfelhotel <3 Hat nen netten Vibe das Album und dreht sich primär ums Bumsene.
Enjoyed
Pretty good, and would probably be better in the evening (I listened midday in my workshop). Marvin Gaye had an amazing voice.
Classic, smooth and brilliant. All round great album.
Got to be in the right mood but classic album regardless.
Not Gayes best, but a great album regardless.
Top notch soul.
Sexy, funky soul. 'Let's Get It On' kent iedereen natuurlijk, ik ook en dat geeft de toon van dit album goed weer. Lekkere silky stem met intieme teksten. Perfect om lekker op te dansen of tijdens sexytime😏.
horny but I like horny
Well glaze my nipples and call me Rita.
Big fan of this album. Marvin Gaye is a classic. Never get tired of his voice, lyrics, or music. 4 stars.
Funny little album
pretty cool i think the third song was really good i don’t remember
Really good and doesn't overstay its welcome
Pas le style de musique vers lequel j'irai à la base, mais très bon album, excellente performance vocale, très bonnes instrus, cohérence globale avec ce qu'il faut de variation entre les chansons.
Very smooooooth
Sexy af. Knew the title track but enjoyed the whole album (though very short).
Marvin Gaye invented romance
Sensuality over 9000
Not one I wanted to listen to but classic.
Marvin Gaye’s heavenly voice hits some sultry lows. I guess it’s overproduced from a certain perspective but it hits the lush vibe perfectly. Wouldn’t you rather make love children… as opposed to war ☮️ Best song: Let’s Get It On
Smooth.
Proper grown-up singing & musicianship that the parade of hip hoppers, crappers & roooooaaaaaar merchants will never posses as long as they have a hole in their bottom.
Honestly wasn't expecting much out of this one especially since I don't listen to this genre too much but got a good bit out of it. Excited to get into more of his discography since this is my first album from Marvin that I've listened to. Good album Favorite tracks: Keep Gettin' It On, You Sure Love To Ball, Just To Keep You Satisfied
Short and sweet, but very nice.
Haha sex song Yknow I didn't really believe that he wanted to get it on after the first song. But I was definitely convinced by "Keep Gettin' It On" that he was gettin' it on.
3.75/5 Smooth, easy, fun, sexy listening. However, it did make me miss my woman a lot. I'm surprised something so overtly sexual could make it into the mainstream, but then again Ice Spice, you know?
Marvin had some things to say about love, said them, said them beautifully and then went on with his day. If only all albums were like this. Nothing bloated, just well performed music. Perfect.
Gaye has an amazing voice and I always like hearing James Jameson on bass. A personal pet peeve with albums is when songs come back as a reprise, no idea why, it just bothers me. Also the orgasmic noises on you sure love to ball were awkward.
Obviously fire
Liquid sex dripping from music. Also this album feels like it was made yesterday. Classic.
Soul is one of those genres that I sing along to the hits on the radio, but rarely if ever listen to a complete album. As a result, I've never listened to this album before today, and I did enjoy it. Excellent vocals, but the songs sounded a bit too alike after a while. May come back to it now and then. Best songs: title song, Keep Getting It On, Distant Lover
dude i think im gay
Pretty good, not as much of a fan compared to whats going on. Incredible vocal performances but I feel its not a strong selection of songs compared to it.
Solid '70s soul. The only song I was familiar with was the title track, and while none of the others were as good, I'm not going to hold it against them for failing to clear that very high bar.
Solid listen
Sex: the album. Followed soon after with a pregnant wife.
This is a truly classic soul album from the smooth vocals of Mr Marvin Gaye. Do I want to listen to this album again and again? Absolutely! Let's get it on!
Bastante fino.
Aaaaaawww yeah... Buttery smooth.
High 4
what a superb record. "whats going on" is heavily overrated and subject to cult adoration. how is this record not superior? how exquisite is the title track? when was the last time a song came out new on the radio that was even near to this calibre of artistry? do we take it for granted because its the silly goofy sex music from tv? there is a reliability to the quality of the rest of the songs. you know 'come get to this' is real soul because you can really sing it
Any songs known?: 1 - Let's Get It On Favourites?: - Let's Get It On - Come Get To This Least Favourites: - If I Should Die Tonight - Distant Lover Thoughts?: - Gaye has an amazing voice and honestly is an amazing artist - Very few flaws with this album tbh, I do however prefer his upbeat songs rather than the slow ones, which this album is full of as they're all love songs Album art: 3/5 - I feel like it doesn't capture the album very well - it's okay Overall score: 4/5
yeah ok we get it
Hadn't listened to much from Marvin Gaye, but recognized several songs on, Let's Get It On. The title track is the "go-to" song for TV and movies whenever love & romance is in the air and the rest of the album follows this theme. A solid album with Gaye's smooth sexy voice creates an the amazing atmosphere of smooth soul and funky funk. It's the perfect mood maker and THE album to put on your turntable before saying, "let's get it on!"
Today's album is the third Marvin Gaye album that I've reviewed (previously reviewed What's Going On and Here, My Dear), and his thirteenth studio album. This album is very erotic and sexual. I kind of feel like I got ear fucked by Marvin by listening to this album. It is like Let's Get It On is the first round of sex, then the "cigarette and a drink" break during the next 2 songs, followed by a second round of banging when Keep Gettin' It On starts. Marvin is a master of his craft, creating a fantastic record of soul/funk. Let's Get It On is a classic that literally everyone knows. Overall, an excellent album today! I'll absolutely listen again! Of the three records I've reviewed of his, this is my favorite. It feels like the most consistent throughout. Favourite songs: Let's Get It On, Keep Gettin' It On, Please Stay (Once You Go Away) Least favourite song: If I Should Die Tonight, Just To Keep You Satisfied 4/5
Classic Marvin Gaye. Good album.
Pure passion and romance distilled in just eight songs. Sensual, but not crass, sexy, but not raunchy. Who says that sexiness can't be classy?
get it on bby
distant loveeeeeerr ouuuhhiooouuuuh
Is this the number one album that people have fucked to in human history? It's definitely possible. 4.5/5
Basically just a top tier motown album. Full of iconic hits and beautiful ballads.
Classic stuff. This guy's voice is iconic, but the musicianship and arrangement that compliment his voice are equally impressive. It's sexy as hell.
distant lover😍😍😍😍 just to keep i satisfied was top tier fav sonv love this album but like its marvin gaye what is there not to like. womp womp womp womp ive been really trying baby🥵🥵😳
5 4
Title track is an obvious classic. Album is smooth as hell throughout, sweet instrumental production, tones and voice. Adding a few of these to a very special kind of playlist ;)
Sexy music
PREFS : Let's Get It On, Please Stay (Once You Go Away), If I Should Die Tonight, Keep Gettin' It On, Come Get to This, Distant Lover, You Sure Love to Ball MOINS PREF : Just To Keep You Satisfied
Amazing voice and a few legendary songs, but having a song called "Keep Getting it On" on this album is a step too far.
Smooth, silky, sexy - many a baby has been made to this album, especially Side A. When Marvin gets it on, he gets it on. A true soul classic.
This went by really quick, but I noticed I kept bobbing my head and dancing around a bit while listening, so I must have liked it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 3.5/5
The sexier, but slightly less impactful and considerably less political What’s Going On, this is undeniably a classic and it goes down smooth. You really don’t need a longer experience here. A-
Beautiful, smooth stylish soul album, it was a very enjoyable listen.
Música para follar guarro y bonito.
I got pregnant just listening to this album. And I'm a dude.
I comment on vocalists a lot, but this has to be close to the top of the pile. So good he got Berry Gordy to change his formula at Motown. Reading the background of the album makes it seem like this is yet another album as therapy for a complicated sexual history - funny how sincerity and introspection can make something great.
He's sexy, he's soulful, Got ballads by the bowlful. He's Marvin fuckin Gaye.
Very good Album
Gaye's great, this one is soulful but overproduced
Very good album for gettin it on. Not a lot of application in other circumstances.
Smooth and sensual
I once heard Marvin Gaye’s voice described as “silk rubbing on satin”, & I don’t think I can top that.
Let's get it on... and on and on. What I find very weird about this classic Marvin Gaye LP is that it can either be played as background music where each track sounds basically the same, OR be played as an album you really need to pay attention to--which means that it's sort of an intellectual exercise, far from its avowed goal to be music "to make love to your old lady by". As other folks pointed out here, the sensuality displayed in those very similar tunes is a little too on-the-nose for today's standards anyway. What's left is the spotless execution, production and performance. 4/4, if only for this. Number of albums left to review: 617 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 187 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 86 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 117
marvin gaye is responsible for millions of people
I recently quipped that Dua Lipa was the Marvin Gaye of our times. So much in each track is devoted to getting in on in one way or another. This itty bitty album oozes and drips, yearns and burns, and has me closing my eyes and leaning in to it the whole way.
Man this is some sexy music.
smooth
Two years after the politically-conscious What's Going On, Marvin Gaye strikes back with the sexually-charged Let's Get It On. While the former album is incredibly important, Let's Get It On is the smoothest of the smooth, the sexiest of the sexy. A passion-fueled record that takes no breaks. The music sits comfortably in the pocket while Gaye puts the magic on. It's incredible how much of a natural this guy is. There is a fine line to straddle between being charming and creepy and there is no creep to be found here.
Fucking smooth as silk....loved it
The ultimate baby-makin' album. Gaye's crooning and passionate voice and jazzy saxophone hooks sets the mood.
Not as good as WGO but still lovely - what a voice!
One for me, and one for my homies
This album made me want to dress like Hugh Hefner and sit on a bear rug, feeding chocolates to my lover in front of a big fireplace in a dimly lit room. Just a nice half hour of good soulful music. Incredibly enjoyable. Love this album. Great instrumentation and singing. Chords and song structures were great. When I got to “Keep Gettin’ It On” I was a little worried about there being a lack of range and by the album’s end, still wasn’t quite satisfied. However, I don’t think this album necessarily needs a ton of range to work. It’s more a vibe-album and has enough lyrical range to carry it. I certainly didn’t care at all for the moaning in the beginning of “You Sure Love To Ball”. 4/5
Sexy What's Going On, what's not to love?
Overall a very strong album. The only problem is that I'm constantly comparing it to "What's Going On" which I feel is the superior album. That being said, this album is PURE sex. I finished it and found myself smoking a cigarette and I don't even own a pack. It's THAT good.
Great album. Very sexy, great guitar trills in the beginning. The strings are excellent, everything's mixed so nicely, love the subtle harp in the background. The sax sounds fantastic and Marvins smooth vocal delivery is the cherry on top. favorite track: you sure love to ball.
If the first track were the whole album is give it 5 stars. This is really good listening. I prefer What's Going On, but this was good too.
Good vibes
A very romantic, sexy album. I'm listening to this in the mild heat of May, and it works perfectly on a hot day. Definitely a seasonal album. You sure love to ball is...wow. Very sexy. Might also be my favourite. This is also the track persuading me to give this album 4 stars :) Let's get it on the track is very good. Problem is that it's been used in memes so much I can't enjoy it. I quite liked Please stay and Distant lover (lyrics mostly) as well. This is a great album to put on when you're in the right mood. Blissful soul at it's best. On RYM, one user aptly put it in their list of 'Albums to have sex to'.
Best Song: If I Should Die Tonight. I love this style of soul, with multiply-overlapping vocals, wherein each vocal track feels like it's conveying the same lyrics with a starkly different emotion. Worst Song: Just To Keep You Satisfied. It is fitting that the comedown song on this sex album is the least interesting. Overall: This has to be one of the most sexual albums ever recorded. It's impressive what levels of eroticism he was able to cram into 8 tracks, but it also severely limits the companies and contexts in which you can play this album. He might have done too good a job at making a Fuck album.
There are 5 guitarists credited on track 2... can you pick them all out? This is a fantastic album. I enjoyed every bit of it. Funky soul deliciousness. 9/10.
Listening to Marvin Gaye may cause spontaneous sexy time. Use with care. This is also why I'm not allowed in the Starbucks restroom alone anymore.
Sexy as fuck, but still classy. It's like Marvin Gaye meeting your parents looking all respectable, before tearing your brains out in the bedroom. What else would you expect from a soul god? In terms of tracks, I'm more of a Sexual Healing girl myself but this is solid all around.
It's funny how memed out the title track is, probably to the detriment of this album and the perception the average young person might have about Marvin Gaye. This album was an incredible listen, I almost like it better than What's Going On just based on the strength of the individual songs. Marvin is the GOAT and I'll be coming back to this project a lot.
Sex: The album
Sex lmao
Nice album, Let's Get It On is incredibly underrated (and overexposed).
He got it on
Heel erg lekker, klassiekertje
seks
Heeeeerlijk wegzwijmelen!!
This is kind of the godfather of slow jams, no? I'm a big fan of Marvin and this captures his signature sound end-to-end. Is it a little over-the-top in some places? Maybe, but it was pretty ground-breaking (and controversial) at the time.
Well, what can be said about this album that hasn’t already been said? Certainly nothing from me! Stonewall classic. Should be in every record collection, regardless of your fondness for the genre. 4 stars for me as it ISN’T my favourite genre. An album that I will occasionally seek out to listen to, but not as often as others! Musically and lyrically it’s excellent, there’s just something I can’t quite figure out that holds it back for me!
The cliche bedroom music album for a reason. This album is just so damn sexy. Funky and soulful to the max.
Ja, waarom is dit soort soulmuziek nog steeds zo leuk? Warm stemgeluid, fluweelzachte instrumentatie, blikje violen hier, ontspannen baspartij daar? Vertelt u het me maar.
Botergeile slaapkamermuziek. Het is eigenlijk allemaal veel te overdreven en zoet, maar toch word je er wel blij van. En dat kan ik van veel andere albums niet zeggen.
Sweet sexy tunes
Definitely sets a mood! Since I'm listening with my daughter we dissolved that mood by singing the categories of Top Trumps Dogs to eachother in Marvin style as we played. I won in the end, kept getting the Doberman. Best songs for this game: Keep Getting it on, You Sure Love to Ball. Good times.
I put this on, an my computer started to overheat. 4 blushing cheeks out of 5.
favorite tracks - let's get it on, keep gettin it on, come get to this least favorite tracks - n/a love the structure of this album
Pretty good!
Just what I needed. Played through twice straight away and added to my vinyl wish list.
I have heard this album many times. It is not my go-to album, but it is very mellow.
Album drops off a bit with the final 2 tracks, but it's definitely a great album overall. Such a smooth vibe for a cozy kinda day.
……and now i’m pregnant
8/10
Nice soulful voice, great tunes. See myself listening to this again.
Can't relate
album drops with the last 2 tracks but it's a lot better than i remember when i heard it the first time. warm vibes that only r&b can provide.
Enjoyed the album
Lotta fun. Downloaded the whole album to listen on the tram and I don’t feel the need to delete any.
Marvin Gaye has, perhaps, one of the most soulful voices ever put to wax. Most artist wouldn’t be able to make a truly “sexy” album without veering into crassness or cringe, but Gaye manages to craft something that is both tuneful and sensual.
Favourite song: Just To Keep You Satisfied
Good R&B album, great bass lines driving the tracks
One of MGs very sexy albums. It is beautifully produced, his voice is like velvet and it hangs together well as an album.....BUT...hate to say it but the 35 minutes wash over me and when it ends I feel a bit empty. (No sniggering at the back) I could have been one long track and I would have felt the same. Classic but a bit dull? 3.5
83/100: This was a fantastic album. I was just complaining to my friend about how absolutely mediocre all of my albums have been lately, I'm glad I got this album to balance things out. Again, I absolutely love this type of music. It's both mournful and celebratory and sexual all at the same time. It takes a true genius and careful touch to produce the sound and emotions that are present in this album. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this on my drive to the airport.
Lush and lilting. Marv could be both the sexy songbird and the quite naughty grinder. There's a flow and a funk to the falsetto sweetness here – and the difference between moaning lovemaking sound effects on records from this era and today's hip-hop records is notably huge (see "You Sure to Love Ball"); the shame-free, honesty that accompanies even the most direct proclamations of desire, plus the sophisticated and elevating string arrangements give this an authenticity that's borderline pure and innocent.
This album departs from the traditional Motown format and uses sexuality as a form of healing. Marvin Gaye’s own sexuality was stunted by the abuse suffered at the hands of his father and this album represents him working through that and finding salvation in it in a way. The music is a great blend of funk and smooth sensual soul which pioneered the slow jam.
This was pretty pretty good.
Such a great voice
yes, let's
Youtube comments are hilarious.
This is unironically good xD
This here is baby making music
Wow I had only heard the title track of this album which is obviously everywhere all over popular culture, TV and film. But I had no idea about Gaye's life story, SA at the hands of his fundamentalist preacher father. I find it fascinating and puzzling how he found healing and even drew ties between faith spirituality and sex after all of that traumatic past. But it brings so much context to the title track and now this whole album learning that. With all of that aside, it is just absolute ultimate smooth soul and I freaking love it. It's incredible, the saxophone and the vocals, the jazzy bluesy soulful instrumentation, just wow. Goes without saying it's extremely sexy, what a sexy beautiful man. I personally love that he wrote a song called You Sure Love to Ball... hahaha excellent.
Well what a sexually charged album. A lot to handle when you're just on the way to work or what not It's fantastically well written music and I love most things that got hard on the orchestra vibes
Sexy AF
Soul animado. Un 4.
Let's Get It On.Soul, funk.
Bra soul, lite synd att titelspåret blivit en meme
Loved it! Soulful music from the heart. Classic.
legendary soulful lovemaking music. good for movie montages, background vibes, and wiggling your eyebrows at a crush
This week has just been classic after classic, a 4 is a minimum in this scenario.
Pure sex. Really good production too. At times how pure sex it is can get a bit old but it's good stuff.
Super solid.
Sexy
Only ever listened to "what's going on" but I always liked that album. Wow this is a super horny album, but amazing instrumentation. Not prepared for how explicit "you sure love to ball" would be at the beginning. 4 stars
Apart from the (somewhat cheesy at this point) title track this one is new to me. Great production! Lots of smooth ballads. I didn't enjoy this as much as "What's Going On", but would definitely come back to it.
Amazing album. I'm not a big fan of rnb, but I enjoyed it a lot. Very well writen and recorded pop-music, even more impressive considering it came out in the 70s.
Marvin Gaye has an all-time great voice, but this album isn't his best. Still good, but only for one mood.
Man this guy must have gotten laid a lot
Liked the majority of the songs. They had a good rhythm.
I enjoyed most of the songs. Jazzy/funky feels were well received.
Iconic
Yeah, great stuff. The title track is still one of my all-time faves. I simply never get tired of hearing it. The album in general features Marvin at the height of his vocal powers. Dude can do it all. And I love it when he harmonizes with himself. The band is tight as hell, and this time around I was floored by the great drumming. I'd give it five stars but as much as I love that opening track, I feel like the other songs aren't quite as great. Also, I forgot what a downer that last track is. It's a good song, but for an album all about sex and love, to end on a breakup song is interesting.
Sehr gekonnt. Ist ein Großer.
Excelente voz y estilo, pausado y con toques soul. Para escuchar en cualquier momento. Un poco para amantes de este estilo.
Great soul classics. Whole album needs to suit the mood though
Another great from Marvin Gaye. This is the record to put on when it's time to get down.
Sweet sweet Marvin. Excellent easy-listening/love songs.
Lets get it on is the hit but the rest of the album is nearly as good
Vraiment très bon, meilleur que What's Going On selon moi. Pas de mauvaises chanson, vraiment près du score parfait
This album is wild. Such a variation of styles, the sensual overtones, and engagement of Marvin Gaye with his musicians is captivating. His use of his music to cope with his own childhood traumas and spiritual healing comes though lyrically.
Definitely a great listen. I think I could jam to pretty much all of these songs, Marvin’s singing is just enchanting. 7/10
8/10. Good stuff
Smooth but doesn’t feel like there’s quite enough material here for a full album. 8/10
no explanation needed
Really good but Whats Going On edges it out.
Making consent sexy since 1973. Definitely a solid album and this is more like a 4.49 for me but I guess I felt it was missing something extra to push it to a five
this is a classic for a reason. it vibes the whole way through, and marvin has an incredible voice. i just didnt feel much emotionally from it, and some stuff felt the same.
Erittäin toimiva pläjäys. Jalat ja pää kävi koko levyn ajan
I mean he’s a legend
Good Classic
The classic love-making album
Ratio: 75% Funky sound, awesome vocals. Can't dislike this. Favs: Let's get it on / Come get to this Dislikes: You sure love to ball
Iconic songs. Sucks that commercials ruined some of them. Also have been listening to a lot of Anderson Paak and Marvin Gaye's influence on him is really clear, even the way he likes to wear a little rolled up beanie
4.5
True classic.
Marvin Gaye could make Humpty Dumpty sound sexy
Not my usual type of music but loved it Would give it 9/10 if I could
Fantastic vibes.
SEX and GOD - two ideas for Marvin that weren't mutually exclusive and they're explored on this soul/funk album. You're guaranteed to be interested in at least one of these things right? Best Tracks: Let's Get It On; Keep Gettin' It On; Come Get To This
Very groovy
music to make love to. I like the production. also I love how all the songs flow seamlessly; I'm a sucker for albums that do that.
What a voice!
20th May 2022 dates fucked again Listened in the morning while working from home. Chilled in the evening, finished the book club book and series 2 of stranger things. Smoother than a baby’s cheek.
The title track is such a classic, albeit a slightly overplayed/used song. A legendary singer and voice.
Another Marvin Gaye masterpiece that is a concept album. Personally, I struggle with some 70s Soul and some tracks on this album are good examples. BUT. Marvin wears his soul on his sleeve once again as he addresses his childhood and marital issues with his wife, who is also his boss' sister, so his struggle was real. For as much as this is great Marvin Gaye album, once again, listen to the Funk Brothers in the background. Jamerson's bass and of course the drum work on the title track are masterful. 4/5.
Je ne suis pas le public ciblé et pourtant
bon ok allez tu m’as convaincue
This is from 70s pop soul sounds like if it was not just iconic but could actually put out a good album, something achievable only to the likes of Al Green or Stevie Wonder. It's smooth, funky, but overall sexual in tone and subject matter, reminds me of Barry White. There are horns, strings, and doo-wop back vocals, but all in balance, nothing is ever in excess. Even the solo in "Distant Lover" feels very controlled, contrary to how loud that sax wants to be. The tracks carry a momentum from to the end. Only 8 tracks, good alone but incredible in-line, so the mix of soul and funk never bores you. Each song ends in a quiet prolonged finish, with the next proudly hooking you in. Whoever did the production is astounding, but considering this was a follow up to What's Going On, I can't say I'm too surprised.
Oh a lot of fun, to be sure. But it does get a little tired at points, which drags it down from a sex-God 5 to a sex-demigod 4
Very good, very consistent! Almost every song was just as good as the title track, the only one I had heard previously.
Smooth and sexual
My mum bought me this one year for my birthday, having confused it with the incendiary social commentary of "What's Going On". She was horrified to realise that, in fact, she had given me thirty minutes of "sex music." The joke is all on her: this album is still revealing its secrets to me many years later. The arrangements are so wonderfully sweeping and rich. The strings and brass give a firm bedrock for Gaye's vocals and backing vocals (all done himself). It's doused in a lovely amount of reverb which helps all of it come together in a gorgeous, lush wash of sound... music to bathe in. Listen to that almost imperceptible glockenspiel and flute adding another subtle dimension to "Distant Lover". Perfect. However much it's used as shorthand to a sex scene, a joke or a meme, the song "Let's Get It On" is absolutely timeless, and an incredible performance from Gaye distilling the sex-positive, sensual and celebratory themes of the album into four minutes of triumphant soul. I don't even mind when "Keep Gettin' In On" comes and does basically the same thing a few minutes later. Learning the context of the album- that Gaye was abused by his father as a child and this marked a healing process as he reassessed his views on sex, love and relationships- made it much more poignant. There's a spiritual power in Gaye's vocals which is every bit as pertinent as in "What's Going On": it isn't just an album to bang to. That said, it's definitely an album with a singular "mood"... if you know what I mean. When that mood fits, it's sublime.
