Reviews (page 6 of 13)

"""Harmonically complex,"" as the editors claim, it may be, but it's also kinda neutral and dull. Stanley Turrentine steals the show. Burrell also great. Hammond B3 functions as rhythm section mostly, occassional forays into church music soloing. Overall, solidly groovy.

Groovy baby yeah… listened to Jimmy Smith all day. Good background music to vibe to while driving around or whatever.

Always nice when its on. Makes good background music when you're studying or working on a craft

Jazz album that is great background music.

Lockerer Jazz der gefällt mit coolem Saxophon

From the first note, what a blessing for acoustics.

I enjoyed the organ work a lot, the whole album had a nice smooth blues vibe to it. It checks the boxes of everything I want in an album like this: groovy, technically skilled, and the songwriting is interesting.

smooth jazz.

Very vibey. Smooth, Chill. Think Jason would like it very much. I like it too.

Melodies seemed a bit hokey but solos ripped.

Jimmy Smith is one of the all-time jazz greats and this album cover is all-world tier one. How can you not like this album? But love it? I say this as a person who owns this album and has played it in my home many times, but I notice it often ends up turning into background music for me. If I were making this list I would have selected two other albums of his (The Sermon and Root Down, if you're curious) but in the end I'm just happy he's on the list.

Although I didn't really know what Jimmy Smith sounded like, or what this album might be like, I really enjoyed it (despite not even knowing that there was a term for a jazz organist). I *had* expected some lyrics and singing, but it's a fun instrumental album, and I'm sure the lack of a song structure allowed them to have those nice long tracks, with every musician getting a chance to show their chops. I'm also shocked at how many albums The Incredible Jimmy Smith churned out in his career, but will have to just trust the book's authors/editors that this is his greatest accomplishment.

enjoyed this expertly subdued jazz. For me, no particular standout song, I just liked how the entire album felt like a bunch of great musicians were chilling, having a mellow time.

This is a really solid post-bop (?) jazz album with Jimmy Smith's instantly recognizable organ. Lots of saxamaphone (Stanley Turrentine) for those who like that sort of thing. Doesn't stretch the genre or do anything too fancy, and sometimes that's exactly what you want from a jazz album. The great Kenny Burrell pops by for anice bit on the guitar. Love Jimmy Smith's blues comp. Cool that this is mostly a three-piece.

Great easy listen jazz. Love the electric piano

Really nice album to just chill to, the organ is a great instrument.

This is very practical music. You can have this on running errands and feel a little more chill. The flip side of this: it's not music that sits in front of you and demands your attention. Even when I tried to stop and pay more attention, it slipped into the background of my thoughts and just subtly adjusted my groove. So, to me, something to keep around for cooking or driving.

I enjoyed this jazz album. It didn't go on too long. Probably could have shortened some of the songs. It wasn't over-the-top or annoying. I would listen to it again. I will round up

molto carino

This is cool. I liked it enough to immediately queue it up for another listen.

I’d heard Back before but not the rest of the album. I don’t usually like organ music but Stanley Turrentine carries the record. Better than expected 4stars

First time listen. Thoroughly enjoyed

Cool organ led soul jazz.

Standard, subtle, and simplistic jazz music. This is definitely middle ground jazz music and that isn't to disregard what its offering at all. It makes itself felt without doing too much to be felt. Thank you Jimmy Smith. 4 out of 5 stars.

Really liked this album. Need to check out more of his music for sure.

Just some solid 60s blue note jazz.

It says Jimmy Smith on the cover but I’m pretty sure this is Stanley Turrentine’s album.

Saturday morning Jazz

Entertaining upbeat Jazz. On several songs I thought I was listening to a horn musician rather than an organ musician. But I guess that's the nature of the organ as an instrument.

every jazz album on this list so far is top-notch

Love it! Great vibe!

great grooves, great playing. some cool stuff here. ultimately, maybe not the most interesting record i've ever heard, but still quite cool and a unique combination of its era of jazz and r&b.

Soothing and somehow familiar although Ive not consciously listened to this album. Grows with repeat listening.

Some of the best jazz yet

Smooth with some real nice B3

This album sounds like a group just hanging out, jamming and having a great time. Great sounding sax as well. It is a very chill listen. I think 4/5 for sure, I will be back if I'm in the mood.

I'm snagging ⭐️ from Jeff Beck and handing it over to Jimmy. If this album were a summer hangout, I'd pitch my tent at this chicken shack and camp out all season.

That first track...cool man, yeah baby...that's cool. dig it? Standouts: Back at the Chicken Shack, When I Grow too Old to Dream, On the Sunny Side of the Street (Bonus). 4/5

This was a good jazz album Top tracks: When I Grow Too Old To Dream

A wonderful discovery that led me down several interesting avenues, including an introduction to acid jazz.

Very smooth

i really needed this instrumental album today. So calming, so easy to have in the background while I journal. I just love it honestly.

I enjoyed this more than I expected. Solid background music, good jams and pacing. Each song have similar traits but have good variations. I wish I had a smoking jacket and cocktail while listening.

A very nice listen. Clocking in at just under 44min with only 5 tracks, and yet the songs and entire album pace well. Even though saxophone seems to be more prevalent throughout, all players feature nicely adding to the listening experience. Just four dudes in the same room pushing play on the record button. Dig it.

First of all, anyone remember the one hit wonder Jimmie’s Chicken Shack? This has to be where they got their name. Anyways, loved this album. Listened to it twice back to back. I don’t know enough about jazz to say it’s a great jazz album, but I’ll certainly revisit along with the rest of his catalog.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t that. I haven’t honed an appreciation for jazz music yet, but this was an enjoyable listen! If I’m being honest, all of the songs sound the same to me… But it’s great music to play while I work.

Very smooth, relaxing, jazz sounds. Great album and I'd never heard of Jimmy Smith. Really enjoyed this album 4/5.

Reminds me of some stuff that inspired the Meters. A good album to clean up to

I liked but, to be honest, I prefer songs with some lyrics.

Great organ work.

Nice smooth Alfa jazz. Good for reading.

Chad jazz

Jazz not really my bag, but an enjoyable listen.

Background music for day to day living right here

Short good rhythm and tunes, perfect for a coffee shop easy listening. 3.8

The keyboards that open the first track "Back at the Chicken Shack" could be by any prog-rock or blues band from the late 1960s or early 1970s, but it soon evolves into a jazzy r&b style. Other tracks are more jazz than r&b. I liked it.

Nice chill jazz album! Very laid back, the guy can really let the hammond swing. But I also got to tip my hat to the sax man Stanley Turrentine, great playing! More of this please!!! 9 out of 10

Very chill and mellow jazz. Easy on the ears and mind. Great listen.

Vad kul att få lyssna på Jimmy Smith! Spelar så jävla bra bas 😅

I've had this one in my list for 13 months now, and whilst I'd listened to it a couple of times I never felt like I had anything to say about it, so never rated it. However, upon what must be my 3rd or 4th listen I totally get this now. I don't have much of substance to say about it, but what an enjoyable experience listening to this album was. The fella in my local chicken shops name is Sasni, but if it were Jimmy Smith I'd be there all day everyday.

Solid relaxing music. Good for just lying down and resting

Imagine a dimly lit bar. Crowded tables, intimate atmosphere. Spotlight on stage where a stylish jazz ensemble plays their hearts out. Incredible saxophone, moving organ, straight drums. This is a strong jazz album with some iconic and inspirational licks. "On the Sunny Side of the Street" is an jazz classic and their rendition should be recognized with more acclaim. Also, tis the season and Jimmy Smith's holiday album is quite good as well.

just some classic, great jazz. simple as that

I don't know enough about jazz to say if this is good jazz, but I can say that I really enjoyed bopping around to it while I cooked pasta, enough that I made myself a little cooking music playlist with this on it.

loved this!

Lovely sound from this jazz album

He's pretty good I just don't know if I'm ready to commit to Incredible.

Immaculate vibes, incredible performances, organ chops on another level. Not sure this quite has the “will actively seek this out in the future” factor that other 5 star picks of mine have had, but if I’m setting the background for a cozy day in, this whole record is absolutely on the playlist.

Strong 4

Easy listening. Enjoyable album. Would listen again.

For someone who can count the jazz albums ive heard on one hand, I have to say that this was a great listen. Very easy listen

really good jazz album

What a groove! Have to admit I didn’t know who Jimmy Smith was even though I’ve heard Chicken Shack 1000 times. I think Messy Bessie was my favorite cut.

Very organ-forward, good horns. Straight forward jazz. Good organ soloing on 'Minor Chant'. Nice guitar/organ combo on 'Messie Bessie'.

love jazz, these are some pretty good tunes, tho i would moreso consider this an ep than an album haha jimmy smith served

Groovy gentle jazz. Leads from organ, sax, and guitar

Out of the box it's nice and soothing, though I don't think this album should be listened in one sitting, I feel I'm on a 30min elevator ride

I must be getting old, because I love this shit.

great DATA fixing tunes, hahah

Funky 60s pop hazz

classic soul jazz/jazz. 3.8

Favourite track... Minor Chant Can't say the organ stood out to me more than any other instruments, sax player was killing it and all the band are talented. Looking forward to listening to this on a cold winter night with a glass of wine whilst I cook something fancy and shimmy round the kitchen.

Nice and bluesy!

Lovely album!

Smooth as fuck

Nice surprise. Had never heard of this

Finally an instrumental jazz album! and with a steller Organ player at that, very unique.

Really cool had never heard of him before

This would be lovely to listen to in a playlist of jazz instrumentals. Would it stand out? I don't think so. But it is a nice calming listen

I'm not a big jazz guy but if I was, this would be my jam. Old school but still sounds fresh. 4 stars.

Jazz??? Lekker man, beetje jazzy bluesy album.

Had never heard this album but great jazz. Loved his organ playing and just a smooth listen.

Chulada chill.

Guter Jazz fürn Hintergrund, schön lange Tracks!

Pretty good, nothing particularly ground breaking, but overall very enjoyable

Chill, languid, warm jams, sounds like a food coma at a family function

Good stuff

79 Based on this scale: 1 - 0 to 19 2 - 20 to 39 3 - 40 to 59 4 - 60 to 79 5 - 80 to 100 Solid album. Drumming was fun.

KENNY BURRELL!!!!!!!!!!!! I <3 instrumental music!!!!!

Good dog Favourite tracks: When I Grow Too Old to Dream, Minor Chant

This was a nice listen and I have heard other work by Stanley Turrentine and Kenny Burrell who are lead musicians in their own right. His organ playing is impressive.

This is definitely the type of thing I would put on to impress other white people. Very good, cool grooves, excellent musicianship. Easy and fun to listen to. This is why Hammonds became cool. That being said, there is something about jazz guitar I will never understand or enjoy. I get why people play jazz and why people go and see jazz—the witness of a process—but I don’t understand listening to an archive of that process with the attendant mistakes and imperfections, unless it’s a live album and even then. But whatever, but whatever, it’s good. My appetite for jazz is just limited.

Absolute vibe. The bridge from bebop to Stax

Leuke vibe, tot voor zo een cozy vibe of op een gezellige café

Saucy af. Name a more chilled out vibe. You can't.

Bonus track is great too!

Uses organs instrument - would be great to remix

I’m not usually a “recorded jazz” guy. I enjoy it much more live, or in a movie, etc. where it is easier to make a connection. This is not the case with this album. It kicks off with some familiar sounding tracks, then continues its easy listening vibe to the end. Low 4.

jazz sax always hits.just right.

That’s some jazzy chicken🐓

Pleasant jazz. The album ended and I made it through the first two songs again (18 mins) before I noticed. Easy listening!

Really good listening. However, the songs all sounded very similar so I gave this a 4 rating.

Spot on. Perfect for a bit of cooking

wonderful smooth classic album. Great listen

Booker T style

Excellent album. Relaxing and exactly what I was looking for.

Great Jazz album. Didn't know I was into jazz, but I surely like this one.

Great record to hit on after a pretty pedestrian and monotonous stretch. Very enjoyable jazz listen to help set the day for a hopefully quiet Friday.

Enjoyed the organ.

Really awesome Jazz album. Hammond organ!!

Always love a good jazz album and this one is GREAT. The cover initially sold me and then the title of the album but once you’re into it? Was a blast to listen to while oddly playing Baldur’s Gate 3 with what I was doing in game.

who am i, a human, to not like jazz?

I had never heard of this album or artist. It's nice, easy to listen to jazz. It kind of reminded me of Henry Mancini, and sounded similar to Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs. I'll have to look into why this was included on the list. Even though I enjoyed it, it didn't seem to be groundbreaking or all that special.

I enjoyed this, I only really know of Jimmy Smith because of "root down" being sampled by the Beastie Boys but this was a pleasant listen whilst I worked.

Smooth Soundtrack, without vocals

Terrific for a (nearly) autumn Saturday afternoon. Can feel my spirit noodling around with the rifts. I love the interplay between the crisp guitar and smooth sax and the belly sound of the organ. Playful and wise, loose in the shoulder joints. Very nice.

Very cool. Loses a point, arbitrarily and unfairly, for still being jazz.

Great way to start a Friday. I knew I would like it before the music even started. And I do!

Didn’t know the artist but liked this album a lot, it was a nice surprise!

Jazzy Hamond Orgel

Great chilled album.

Nice blues

3.5 Perfekte Kochmusik Mag die Orgel+Saxkombo Schöne Albenkohärenz Auf das erste Mal ist wenig hängen geblieben, beim zweiten Mal schon mehr Braucht bestimmt noch ein paar Relistens

Very solid album. I’m usually picky with my taste in Jazz, but this turned out very nice.

This was such a nice and calm listen. Super cozy. Starting out the first song with an electric organ was an instant hook for me. I imagine the best way to experience this is in some cozy dim lit NYC basement while having a nice meal.

chill jazz

So much fun, this is an excellent jazz compilation with some particularly excellent rock organ. Didn't really take notes but enjoyed.

The soul jazz thing is definitely for me. I wondered when it was decided that Hammond Organ was the official sound of cool, and I strongly suspect it was here.

Stone-cold legend

one of the coolest ever, once in a while

Amazing hammond

Enjoyed this, but wasn't completely blown away. Just very pleasantly funky throughout.

Good stuff. Such an unknown artist/album that I likely won't listen to it again, but I'm glad I did.

Nice chill jazz

Jazzy/Funky organ. Good stuff.

I never feel qualified to talk about jazz. However, I do know that Jimmy Smith is a great organist!

Jazz instrumental, but it flows along and is fun, I didn't find myself waiting for tracks to end despite their length. The guitar in Messy Bessie stood out, but the album overall is pretty good.

A rare instance where, while listening to this during my commute to work,I wanted neither the album nor the commute to finish. 🐓🐓🐓🐓

Wonderful jazz esque instrumental album. Crazy, cool and just right when I listened. Discovering that I have enjoyed all the instrumental albums so far 8/10

Very chill jazz!

Genres: Jazz, soul jazz, hard bop Formed: 1950’s? Run time: 5 songs, 43 min, 48 sec This isn’t a popular album on Spotify. The least played track has over 230k plays and most of the other tracks are similar. The title track, “Back At The Chicken Shack” is the most played, with over 5.3M plays. I’m not a jazz fan, but this was OK. For an instrumental jazz album, this was a chilled listen. If you’re a fan of the Hammond Organ, you love this. The Doors and other groups of the late 60’s and early 70’s made great use of this instrument, but it must have been quite pioneering in the early 60’s. Listen Again?: No My Rating: ****

So Jimmy is the guy responsible for bringing the organ era into jazz clubs and ultimately bringing the Hammond into rock and roll and later into prog rock, by way of handing the baton to the Moog. That's good enough for a 4. Who would guess there isn't a bass in the band. He covers off the bass lines flawlessly while at the same time producing at least two handfuls of other notes. I can't even imagine how complicated the keyboards and pedals networks are to negotiate.

Is it a sign of a midlife crisis that I am rapidly growing to appreciate jazz more and more?

The material isn't exactly other-worldly challenging, but the groove is easy, flowing. Turrentine steals the show at times, because JS plays the Hammond B3 solos a bit on the chill side. "Incredible" is an overstatement, sure, but this is well worth knowing.

First song is immediately giving me The Sandlot vibes. I dig it.

Dude! My old boss showed me this album a few years ago! Still holds up as a back country blues album. Fun stuff.

So groovy! Fav track was definitely Back at the Chicken Shack but all of them were winners

Pretty neat jazz album 4/5

Un très bel album de type matin

ca detend

The type of album that you know exactly how soulful it'll sound as soon as you see the cover and title. Favorite track: When I Grow Too Old to Dream

Hard to listen to.

Extra crispy jazz jams that’d make even Gus Fring get up and shake his tail feather.

I like this album a lot. Very chill music and I love the sound of the organ. The title track is definitely my favorite but it's consistently solid throughout. Standout Tracks: Back At the Chicken Shack, When I Grow Too Old To Dream, Messy Bessie

Really lovely. Tight grooves and feels like all the songs earn their lenghts. Will definitely find myself returning to this album and exploring Jimmy Smith more.

A very pleasant, smooth nice jazz album. The songs blend together but it's just a really great album to listen to.

Funk, jazz... What's not to like?

Really good jazz album, added to my rotation.

Honestly expected this to be Jimmie's Chicken Shack. Regardless, really great stuff. I loved the way the organ was the backbone and the different rhythms were used.

A great demonstration of "where jazz meets blues". A good recording of some simply great tunes.

One of the greatest keyboard player

Vet album! Heel chill en vrolijk. Gaat op de lijst.

If you love the organ, this is the album for you!

After listening to, Back At the Chicken Shack by Jimmy Smith, I have to reconsider my dislike for the organ. Through it's association with church and sporting events, I never really consider the organ I viable instrument in a band, but this record is a fabulous jazz album that is enhanced by the warmth of Mr. Smith's organ. Perfect background music for a cool brisk day dreaming of summer. Very nice!

Never heard it before. Liked it. Will probably never play it again though.

While this was a bit of background, I would put this one again in a second. I liked everything I heard on this.

Too cool. This bad boy slipped down like the first espresso martini on a Thursday night. Classy, slinky and just tasty enough for the jazz heads, but accessible enough for the general listener. Sometimes I think the Hammond B3 organ has a tendency to overpower other instruments but Smith lends it wonderful light and shade. Kenny Burrell plays some fine guitar too - silky, clean, hip. The bees' knees!

Not a big fan of the Hammond Orfan, but Jimmy made it it work. The album is enjoyable, but probably not one I would revisit.

OK, judging the music by it's cover, I was expecting some dub reggae, funk or bluegrass. What I wasn't expecting was some of the most mind clenching jazz this side of Miles Davis. A really interesting album that I need to listen to some more

Smooth

A great little jazz album, though times it felt it was crossing over to blues territory and we were just waiting for the raspy voice to slide in. I loved the organ and sax and the occasional drum and guitar focus. Have placed all songs in a 60's and a Jazz playlist, as the album deserves to be listened to again. Favourite track Back at the Chicken Shack

Heel fijn album! Had meerdere keren op repeat terwijl je wat dingetjes in huis doet

Nice album. Organ legend. Died in Scottsdale. RIP

Awesome jazz to listen to while working.

Great sax!

Album 300/ whatev the combined total is It's -30 degrees Celsius tonight, and I'll have to remember this for future cold nights. I saw the album cover, took in the chicken and dog and expected something with more brass and percussion. Instead it's chill, smoky- perfect to have on in the background sipping on cocoa. January 27, 2023 (late nite) Fun Stats: - I have had 0 albums by The Who, Bruce Springsteen, and the Byrds. (Not like there's anything stopping me from listening on my own time) BUT - Already got all the Queen albums, 3/4 of the Leonard Cohen, Metallica and Stevie Wonder selections, & 4/6 albums by Elvis Costello

Solid organ jazz album - 4/5 would listen again (such an underrated and overlooked instrument, everyone thinks of Back concerto's, but it's so versatile!)

Very cool. 4/5

Well now that you mention it, that album WAS pretty incredible. 4 stars.

Back At The Chicken Shack- 8/10 When I Grow Too Old To Dream- 8/10 Minor Chant- 7/10 Messy Bessie- 7/10 On The Sunny Side of The Street- 7.5

Pretty good

Sailing on the lazy jazz river. Smith’s dexterity on the organ compliments the horn section and rightfully helped popularize the instrument.

I liked it, easy listening.

Soulful organ jazz. Jimmy Smith is my man I want to give him a pound.

Silky, smooth, fun

Went in with no expectations. I love instrumental jazz music and to make it better - its named back at the chicken shack.

3.5 rounding up to 4 since 3.5 is not an option

This is a good and interesting jazz album. But for my tastes, personally, if I'm listening to a Hammond B3, there also better be an R&B band like the M.G.'s there too.

3.75/5 nice jazz for background but nothing special

Superb.

nice jazz. hadn't heard jimmy smith before.

Fun little Jazz album. Enjoyable listen

as an album i liked it pretty well , but the mixing was so bad for headphones 7/10

7/10. Good stuff, pleasant to listen to, and great for getting work done to

Not always hype, but they shredded for a bit. 8/10

Very solid, funky fun. Despite quite liking jazz, I'd never heard of Jimmy Smith prior to this, and that now seems like a shame. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it does what it does really well. Something to groove to at an intellectual dinner party, or a chilled study session. 28/10/22

There are few masters of an instrument. Jimmy Smith is one of them.

Love this. Soulful jazz with a focus on organ is something I didn't know I needed so much.

Jimmy must be raising some funky chickens in that shack!

I don’t have a whole lot to say here. It’s very competent jazz but it didn’t feel super distinctive (maybe it was at the time), but absent a more informed prior, it’s gotta be a 4

this was lovely, i listened at work and it just flowed really well.

This was a great listen. Very mellow and laid back but still interesting. I would listen to this with rapt attention and as background music. Works either way.

Great jazzy music. Easy listen

really great instrumental jazz, listened to in the bath and really heightened the experience. I don’t really see how anyone could not like this. 4.6 :D

jazzy i guesss

I was grooving to this entire album. Loved the organ. Very enjoyable listen.

Really enjoyed the organ backed jazz with amazing sax solos. Just stayed at the same level the whole time and didn't disappoint.

Nice jazzy blues-y album. Definitely not driving music in my humble opinion, I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was cooking, or chilling on the sofa with a nice glass of something strong. Will probably come back to it when I need a good lounge ambience.

Soul Jazz comfort food. I like the tracks with Kenny Burrell on guitar best, particularly "Messy Bessie."

Rating: 7/10

Fantastic jazz album filled with great solos.

Just a great listen. Great stuff with the sax and organ. Smooth and enjoyable.

60's jazz that did not loose anything over the years. Great organ and sax work.

Pretty good stuff, 4 stars for me.

4.5/10

This is my kinda jazz! It's funky, somewhat muted but still groovy. I felt so cool while listening to this, especially the title track. Where is this chicken shack? I would like to pay a visit.

Pretty fun i liked it a lot, very fun and jazzy

I love the jazz organ and this album really features it superbly. Really enjoyable music for the day!

Loved some of the riffs. Smooth and hypnotizing

This is good. Nothing amazing happening, just good music. When I saw it was on Blue Note I kind of knew it was going to be good.

Great jazzy background album for when you want to chill. The five songs are quite long, but with this kind of music this is totally fine.

Organ is rad

Pretty good. I like bebop and modal stuff much more than this type of soul jazz, but there were still lots of great moments in here. Loved the back and forth with the sax and Hammond organ, and overall just liked the very mellow vibe, even during some of the more complicated solos.

I love discovering new music, especially for genres I love like jazz. Incredible stuff here. B+

Nothing big to see here, just a big ol' happy funk jazz album. And in the really rainy day that was yesterday, when I listened to this album, that's all that I needed :)

Grooving to the sweet organ sounds. Somehow I missed out on the Jimmy Smith phenomenon. Will have to listen to some more of his MANY albums.

Love the cover art. I have a special place for the Hammond B3 Organ.

I almost always enjoy an organ trio or quartet, especially ones with a good guitarist in the mix. Big fan of Medesko Martin and Wood, to name one group clearly indebted the “The Incredible” Jimmy Smith. But I’d never gone looking into the history of where it all came from. I’d be curious to know why they picked this out of all his albums (about 100, I gather). I’d love to follow this up by listening to his collaboration with Wes Montgomery, for example. But this album was thoroughly enjoyable, without ever making me go “oh wow”. 4 stars.

I only own 2 Jimmy Smith albums & this is one of them. Recorded in 1960 for Blue Note, it really swings and is very much an ensemble album. The great guitarist Kenny Burrell features on half the 4 tracks. But I reckon it’s as much Stanley Turrentine’s album. His tenor playing embellishes the whole record. By contrast, the other album I have is a 1967 album he did for Verve, titled Respect, and the difference in Smith’s approach is marked. It’s very funky. Four of the five tracks are covers of soul/funk standards of the day, and it’s very much a Jimmy Smith album. And there are no horns. It’s all about the organ. This reflects the development of his taste through the 60’s. But it doesn’t detract from the greatness of Back At The Chicken Shack - a wonderful listen.

Hmmm... I think I might like jazz. This is beautiful background music that has a deep calming effect.

Not what I thought it would be but not bad

Really great stuff. What’s noticeable is how Smith so masterfully concedes the limelight to Burrell and especially Turrentine on so much of this album. There’s always something of a ceiling for jazz in my eyes, but there’s no denying this is a toe-rapper.

Master of the jazz organ bass pedals.

This shit goes man.

Enjoyed it more than I expected

Ya like jazz?

This is music that Gus Fring would listen to while cooking. Very jazzy and smooth, and definitely feels ahead of its time. Joe from Soul would have loved to play something like this in the NY Jazz Clubs. While I like the album, Minor Chant is the only song that really stands out to me. Best Songs: Minor Chant Worst Songs: NA

Fun way to groove right into a Friday morning. Some smokin' organ playing going on here which definitely kept me interested throughout.

Incredibly smooth, grooving music. Great listen!

Not bad, if a little repetitive. Enjoyable sound though

Soundillisesti tosi lähellä samana vuonna ilmestynyttä Booker T & the MG’sin Green Onionsia. Tää on mulle tuntematon herkku 4/5

What if we kissed at the chicken shack???? Prefs: Back at the Chicken Shack, When I Grow Too Old To Dream, Minor Chant Moins pref: Messy Bessie (still good)

Great sax

Pretty good Jazz

This was a fun album. It kept me interested and "boppin' along" the whole time - which is more than most studio jazz does for me.

Soul jazz, lækkert, helt glat, elguitar

good jazz, if a little basic

This is a cool jazz album that really hits the sweet spot between being good jazz and being easy to listen to and digest. I don't have much else to say about this one other than that it's great to listen to and I'm going to keep my eyes out for a vinyl copy of it to add to my collection 4/5

Top Notch Jazz right there.

Lovely, laid-back, funky soul jazz with an irresistible, cozy groove. Jimmy Smith and Donald Bailey lay down a strong foundation, upon which Stanley Turrentine is given room to excel, and Kenny Burrell plays a vital supporting role. Perfect for a rainy day, late night, small gathering, or long walk. Standout Tracks: Back at the Chicken Shack, Minor Chant

Very chill funk jazz with an early 70’s sound

This album is notable because it features the Hammond organ and creates a link between jazz and soul music that Jimmy Smith is known for. Other than that link, this album does not really push any boundaries. It's a solid jazz album, and features interesting organ and saxophone improvisations.

Very enjoyable jazz album. Laid back. By the numbers. Just how it should be.

Very nice chill jazz to study and relax to :)

Jimmy Smith is probably the most laid-back person on the planet. This sounds pretty good on a summer day, today. Not five because the Hammond all the way through is a little one-dimensional.

Really enjoyed this

This is my kind of jazz!! Yay! Super lovely to work to. It's really fun and interesting and puts me in a good mood without being chaotic or stressful and it's certainly not dull. When I Grow too old to Dream did something to me!! So relaxing.

Ooohhh, me gusta el jazz y este disco es preciso. 4 temas, pero nunca aburre.

Super goed hammond album, altijd voor in

I'm only attending parties that have this playing in the background from now on.

Groovy, chill vibe. Loved it. Fave Songs: Back at the Chicken Shack, When I Grow Too Old to Dream

Love the B3 and dig this record. Great for background tunes, or really paying attention in headphones.

Back At The Chicken Shack doesn't ever say anthing interesting as it remains locked to its 12 bars like a weight around its neck. When I Grow To Old To Dream is a good track. Minor Chant is also a good listen, though I am generally not a huge organ jazz kind of guy. Yea I enjoyed every track on this other then the title track. Does it go wild off kilter places? no. But this was absolutely pleasant.

-Very solid groovy instrumental. I like the keyboard and trumpet parts

Some pretty cool jazz. Good background music. I think I'll make more of an effort to listen to this type of stuff at work Nice.

decent, and musically all well put together, but can't really think of any circumstance where i'd play this whole thing

Very solid, very chill jazz record.

Love it!

Nice blues/jazz sound. Quite enjoyed. Great organ and sax. Solid B.

Really relaxing listen. Great to do some work to or just to listen and wind down. "Messy Bessie" my favourite song on the album.

I liked this more than I did birth of the cool

Excelente opção de clima com o instrumental envolvente.

Groovy, man.
