I mean after Blue Suede Shoes we're left with a bunch of covers that feel pretty unremarkable. Most of which I don't know the originals so can't pass comment, but the ones I do, are far superior. Blue Suede Shoes is probably above this problem as Elvis's version is so well known. Also it's not mildly tainted I guess because you can't say that one was whitewashed being it was wrote by Carl Perkins. Strange not to include Heartbreak Hotel as well since this also bucks the trend. Tutti Frutti and I Got a Woman though, get out of here. And Blue Moon is just weird, it feels like everyone involved in recording it is falling asleep.
I respect Elvis for his massive once in a generation influence for bringing rock and blues to the white masses. Dad loved him. Am I Elvis or Beatles fan? Alway Rolling Stones. To me this would be like some white guy covering Prince or James Brown.

The king! Haven't ever listened to any of his albums before just songs here and there. I understand the impact he had on music and culture back then but the music is really just ok. He did bring us fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches though so there is that.
Not a very compelling album from the king of rock in my opinion. The opening track Blue Suede Shoes might be the most memorable and typical Elvis. But even that song starts to feel repetitive by its end. Some of the songs on the back end, I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin) and Blue Moon - Take 9/M are really slow and boring. Wanted to like this one more than I did.

My first Elvis album! Honestly? I don't get the hype around his "Elvis twang". It just sounds so mumbled and off putting. Another thing is that I was surprised he didn't have the twang for every song. He sounds completely different without it! The songs just aren't very good at all unfortunately.
I listened to Blue Suede Shoes, and it sounded a little hollow, so I listened to Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins' version right after. And then Folsom Blues. What a song! Can't wait to listen to the whole album. Where was I? Right, Elvis. Probably a really relevant album and so on, but most of the songs are rather cringy or bland, or both... Tutti Frutti comes along and feels anemic. So I immediately listen to Little Richard's version. What a classic! I get it, Elvis laid the groundwork for Rock and Roll's success. This is album the foundation upon which other people built castles. But only nerds visit a castle and are interested in its foundation.
At least each song was short. Most of Elvis's work sounds to me like a soulless cash grab, and this is no exception.
Not great. Sounds like a novelty album to me. The greatest hits albums worked much better. The version of Blue Moon is excellent though.
I think for every fast there was a slow song and that was nice for a change but I also feel like as an adult I realize how much Elvis used black music to make it and I’m not sure how much he gave back to that community in return. I will need to look that up but this also wasn’t my favorite in terms of his music overall anyway.
I’ve been a low level Elvis Hater for a while, but now have some time for the later live recordings. So coming into this one, I had a more open mind than I might have a couple years ago. This is good when it’s good, but man for a 28 minute album there is a lot of filler here. Elvis is not my King.

Between 2 or 3 here…. It was ok, obviously influential and I liked more of the ballad-y songs, the ones that were more Roy Orbison… the whole thing has a real Hayes Code horniness to it. Glad it was short!

It was interesting hearing Elivs not sound "Elvisy" on some songs. Tutti Frutti by anyone other than Little Richard is just wrong. It's not a genre I normally listen to but I like the boogie piano style. I wouldn't listen to this album again though.
Okay... I've hated Elvis all of my life. Public Enemy didn't help with my anti-Elvis world view. I've recently softened a bit considering his influence on other acts such as the Beatles. Still not my thing.

It's classic, but I haven't enjoyed this music for a long time.
In 1989, I saw Elvis walk out of the gas station of the rest area Taunusblick-Eschborn, A5 near Frankfurt. When he spotted me recognising him, he did his little a-bop-bop-a-loom and told me we should all move on. He seemed nice.
It's Elvis. I'm sure it was groundbreaking and new at the time but it's never been for me. I'm just not a big fan of Elvis's vocals but you do have to appreciate the new sound and pioneering an upbeat country/rock and roll sound. 5/10 (2.5/5)

Almost 70 years later, there has been a movement to redefining how Elvis has done nothing but stolen black artists music. White washing the soul of the music. But, the historical significance of influence in this album is palpable. Leading to the music of 70s and 80s, where my earlier musical favourites exist. Sometimes it is the lowest denominator that survives the test of time. But, one can find a tiny shade of his greatness hidden in these songs.

90% of this passed me by. Nothing really happens, it’s just there. Couple of decent little bits, quite like the guitar on ‘Just Because’, and Blue Suede Shoes is decent. Can appreciate this mustve sounded like the future in 56 but I’m glad it wasn’t. 1.5
Elvis' persona and the rock and roll thing must have been completely revolutionary because otherwise it feels like a huge practical joke that I'm not in on. He can't sing anything that isnt a proper crooner, and even then he's not great. It feels like a parody of Elvis most of the time, until you remember that's what Elvis sounds like. And he's singing a load of songs they have been done loads better by other people! I think blue suede shoes is okay and there's enough about it to get through one listen but it's really bad. 1.5.

Better than the last Elvis album we had, but still not great. I thought there would be much more up tempo tracks like blue suede shoes, but most is quite downbeat really. Still don't think you're for me Elvis. 2.5

So, I know Elvis Presley is... well, Elvis, right? He's called 'The King' for a reason. Problem is that the King is dead, and this album, while probably a perfect fit for its time, is nearly twice as old as I am. I've listened to it so I can cross it off the list, but I won't be going back to it.
Rip off artist Elvis has ironically been ripped off to the point where his music is no longer interesting. Especially 70 years later...

He was never a favorite but I did enjoy the album. A lovely voice but his choices ran a bit maudlin for my taste.
If there is an artist people give a lot of credit to that I could probably do with a lot less of in my life, it would be Elvis. If I never heard Elvis again for the rest of my life, I would not be complaining. I just don’t get it. People listen to Elvis in the 21st century, unironically? People are allowed to enjoy whatever they want, but those who live and breathe Elvis just confuse me. This happens to be within the top 5 oldest albums on the list. And this proves to me that the 50s were by no means a strong decade for music. Especially not in comparison to the stuff we would get only a decade or so later. This OG rock & roll genre just sounds like white people trying to jack all of the ideas that the African Americans came up with during the 20s and 30s. When they eventually ditched the roll part is when rock started to really evolve. Elvis is just the poster boy of this era. And I simply don’t like him, or his music. I find it to be very plain and uninspired. And it feels rather pointless when considering the heights that other artists were reaching even in the same year. I know people who love his music. And I’m sure they probably grew up around those who listened to it themselves as a kid, and also grew up around Elvis fans, and so on. My opinion is not going to change how eternal this man is as an icon. But that doesn’t mean I’m forcing myself to like his music. The best thing that came out of this is London Calling’s album cover. Rating: 4/10

Can appreciate the breath of fresh air he likely offered at the time, but his style of music is not for me.
I liked the uptempo songs. Blue Suede Shoes is an all time classic. Otherwise, not for me.
It's hard to hear these songs and not imagine them being sung by an impersonator.

I mean it's mostly just a bunch of covers of other peoples music. I have trouble seeing how this would've been popular if the original artist weren't black and therefor not regarded as "good". Anyway, the country songs and ballads are better. His voice is undeniably powerful. Still I think there is so much better stuff out there. Blue Suede Shoes is a classic though. Strong 2.

There is some great rock-a-billy on here, and plenty of tracks to remind me why I was never a fan. I like some songs - this version of Blue Suede Shoes, for example.
Only 28 minutes long, but I would cut 26 of them. Blue Suede Shoes comes out of the block strongly, but after that I was amazed how twee it all sounded. I've Got A Woman was especially watered down. The 'Elvis made black music accessible to easily frightened white folk' is an old trope, but listening to this album it's difficult to see it as anything but a cynical money grab. Elvis is in there trying to get out, but he's being compromised from the start.
This album is historically relevant, but I can't find a good reason to listen to Elvis in 2024.
Probably pretty good for it's time but honestly just too old for my taste.

I think, for me, Elvis has always suffered from being so popular with the generation before mine. Therefore very much not cool. By the time I was even aware of music, he was seeing out his time in Vegas and then dead. I tried to be receptive but it just feels very samey. At least it’s brief. Much prefer the Ray Charles version of I Got a Woman.

It was interesting to listen just because of the historical significance of this being Elvis's first studio album. I don't know why, but I always have an issue with people who get famous for singing other people's songs. Everyone loves Elvis, but he really had no involvement in what songs he sang or which ones became hits. Very much like Britney Spears. But she had tits.

This guy really loved his blue suede shoes. I was born a few years after this album was released. I know many of his songs, but it was interesting hearing the range of styles on this album.
Much like Jerry Lee Lewis, the cloud of "white man popularising the black man's music" hangs heavy here. Classic rock & roll, albeit distilled.

Forgetting the significance of Elvis and the legacy he left on rock n roll music - this is incredibly boring. Just how riding around in the first Model T would not be a comfortable auto experience, listening to this record is just as unbearable. Willing to give it a 2 because I feel bad about a 1. But in my opinion even for the 50's there was much more exciting (jazz) music happening that if I went this far back - I'd rather listen to.

I went in expecting to dislike this immensely because I have an innate aversion to Elvis Presley. It wasn't as god awful as expected, but I don't think I can ever see myself going back to listen to it. I'll say this: my ears weren't bleeding and if I heard this in a work-wear store or a Cracker Barrel I'd be like "alright, kind of catchy" but if I would side eye someone for listening to this casually

The debut album from The King and I have to be honest, I am not really a big fan of Elvis. I know these songs, but I think he is karaoke singer. I know back in the day this was how music was made, but I'm not that impressed with this style. How many artist didn't get the fame or notoriety because of their colour of their skin? Yes Elvis had a lot of charisma which helped and he has a decent voice, I just have too many issues...without going into creepy relationships, I just choose not to give him attention. For an album of 12 songs, I'm glad it was over in less than 30 minutes. Standouts: Blue Suede Shoes

A lot of tracks came off as hokey to me. I don't think I like Elvis' vocal style. I definitely did some toe tapping in the car though. Money Honey was decent. Overall not terrible, but not something I would go back to.
Cool to hear some of the old Blues standards from Elvis. Mixed bag production wise, fun pop. I echo others here, music wasn’t really new; just new to white folk.

I don't like Elvis and I think it's the vocals. I tried to give this a fair shot, but I probably didn't because he's corny. The songs are obviously listenable, sometimes catchy, and sometimes iconic, but I wouldn't go out of my way to choose this. And now that I've gotten to Tutti Frutti, I can say he took the work of Black artists and made it worse. Two stars.
Hrmm... I see the criticism of Elvis and stealing black music. The album is good but on the backs of an entire culture that didn't get to reap the rewards. Also, Elvis's high voice is so weird.
I think it just bores me. Plus I just don't like Elvis as a person.
"If I could find a White man who had the Negro sound, I could make a million dollars," said Sun's Sam Phillips before "discovering" Elvis. While I understand the importance of this record for popularizing rock and roll, you should listen to the black artists from which Elvis stole. They did it better. Go listen to Chuck Berry, Big Momma Thornton, Otis Blackwell, Ray Charles, Lloyd Price, Fats Domino, Rosetta Tharpe, Muddy Waters, and BB King.
Classics are classics but it is a bit boring for 28 minutes. Very similar songs throughout and not as interesting as his later work.

Blue Suede Shoes - okay but nothing too memorable, basic blues shite and okay vocals. I'm Counting on You - a bit more pleasant than the first track, kind of like the doo-wop flavor I've Got a Woman - leave it to Ray One Sided Love Affair - just annoying - both vocally and instrumentality I Love You Because - feels like he changes his the tone of his voice to "fit'" the track and it doesn't connect here. Just Because - not much to say - unremarkable Tutti Frutti - Inoffensive but mid cover Trying to Get to You - maybe the best one so far, better vocals for sure i'm gonna sit right down and cry (over you) - Just very similar instrumentation to every other song with even more annoying vocals I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin) - 🥱🥱🥱 Blue Moon (Take 9/M) - just many better renditions Money Honey - one of the better renditions on the album but still rather forgettable and hopefully the final Elvis song I will listen to

I’m glad popular music has evolved past this style. My favorite Elvis songs, in which there aren’t many, are not on this album. My favorite songs on this album have versions by other artists I like much better. Realistically, whatever was innovative or spellbinding about Elvis during his time is not captured simply by listening to this album.

So many recognisable and enjoyable songs, but I've heard them all so often that they're kind of just wallpaper to me.
Boring, but thankfully short. I don't think I can give it one star as it wasn't painful or irritating. Just total nothing music.

blue suede shoes is nostalgic but early rock and roll isn't really all that good for the most part. there's some good stuff! but elvis' debut isn't one of them.
Elvis has a funny voice, I really hope that is how he talked normally as well that would crack me up. These really old albums are hard to rate. Would sound way better if he would introduce a synthesizer or electric guitar or something. He really missed out on his opportunity there. This music is not really my jaunt but I can see where it was really good at the time I think? Just for fun I am going to take the side that he was completely overrated. It was cool to listen to this because of the history but thats pretty much it. At least this album was only 28 minutes long

It’s Elvis. I’ve never really cared for Elvis. Most of the songs are just “wow a white dude is singing this now.” The only funny thing I noticed is that Blue Suede Shoes feels like early shoe culture. But otherwise I don’t like it.

Blue Suede Shoes is a perenial hit. His vocal delivery is both iconic and divisive. Its a little too artificial and forced for me. So he just took the blues and played it faster and boom: Rock and Roll. Yea this sucks as an album but important as a museum piece.
He barely can say his words.
2. I just don't really care for Elvis..
Before: excited After: you can tell it was made before the times that albums generically flowed together and had a few key themes. This album starts fast before jumping to slow and repeats this for most of the album. Wonderful covers and I will always love his voice.
Better than the other elvis album that came up, more rock n roll which i prefer but still not into elvis.

It's quite easy-listening I guess, but it feels a bit anaemic. If you take away the force that is Elvis and his whole persona and fame, and just listen to it fresh on its own merits, I don't think there's that much there to really get excited about. I appreciate I'm saying this from the year 2023 of course.

Elvis the real one minute man with these short songs. Blink twice and the song is finished. Blue Suede Shoes is great, and I'll credit the fantastic Heartbreak Hotel to this album too. The rest is alright. I give this two ticks of the clock, c'mon Presley, get your stamina up! ⏰⏰
Day 6 I'm assuming this is one of the oldest albums on the list. I only know one of these songs so let's see how this goes. 6 - only song I know from this album. It's alright. 4 - I just want to note that this song has a noticeably worse quality than the first song for some reason. I don't know what the deal with that is. Hopefully that's why it sounds this bad and it's all just a quality thing. 5 - goofy ahh song 3 - I know it was the 50s but like ??? The lyrics are so damn bad. He doesn't sound good on this song at all. The only thing this has going for it is the piano and the drums. 4 - it has to be because I'm tired that these are so lame. This song is essentially just a ballad with him singing and very little going on with instruments and while I think Elvis has a fine voice, it does not show on this song. 7 - this one is fun and is good when I consider the technology they had at the time 7 - this song is so god damn goofy but in a good way. Update on the quality btw: I think this person is literally recording straight from their vinyl record cause like you can actually hear the scratches in the audio. 5 - eh 5 5 - almost exactly the same reasoning for why I have I Love You Because as a 4 except it does a fun little tempo switch at the end so it's slightly better 2 - what I could only describe as Elvis doing his best impression of a dying dolphin over a metronome 7 - Elvis actually doesn't sound terrible on this song and the guitar on it works well. Overall: The best thing about this album is that it's short. There is not a single song that reaches the 3 minute mark and it's only 12 songs long. I actually did a bit of research into what songs are on the list and the list came out in 2005 so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that that's why some of these are the artists 3rd best albums because music was slightly harder to find back then. Overall: 60/120 or 50%
Another album by Presley and Ross. This one is from a different phone is better the previous I still don’t get the fascination with him, it’s not my kind of music. I understand that he was a pioneer in some ways and many groups have said in the past that he was inspiration to them and their music, but in the 2020’s you can clearly see how his music is aged, and not particularly well. 2/5

The opening here is strong, but the Elvis-washing of the rest of the tracklist only works sometimes. It's an interesting recording to come late in my list: Variant, but almost everything it does is done better elsewhere. A record to know, but the highlights are spiky.

I can see why he was big for his time. But it doesn't do much for me overall. Thankfully its a short album.
Fine i guess? Without the context from the time the music here just doesnt hold up all that well. Not terrible by any means, not interesting either. At least the extremely short runtime ensures it doesnt overstay its welcome.

Ignoring the huge influence this had on music and culture in general, this is not really that enjoyable today. It's from the 50s so of course it hasn't aged the best. I don't want to give it any pity points for being super old or something - just completely going off my enjoyment, it's a 2/5. Some songs were fine. "Tutti Frutti" was probably my favorite if I had to pick one.

I haven't found a place to stand on Elvis really. I have some good and bad feelings about the guy. Music on this album didn't stand out. Blue Suede Shoes is a bop but I don't like it really, and I do like Tutti Frutti as a song but there are many better performances of the song. Otherwise, no other songs left much of an impression.

Was originally pretty excited to have an Elvis album to listen too. However this album disappointed me a bit. It’s 12 songs and just under 30 mins. The songs are short and quick. Some are up tempo and feels like it plays at double speed. Some of these songs his voice is a bit higher pitch which felt odd for Elvis. Kind of underwhelming overall but it did show that he had potential. 5.3/10

So I listened to an album called Elvis (1956) on YouTube, and after perusing the reviews I've found out that what I listened to was not at all this album as it did not have any of the songs mentioned by others here. Luckily I already know most of those so I'm not going to listen to another one, you hear one Elvis album you've heard them all. He has three styles, the uptempo rockabilly, the blues, and the love (or gospel) croon. Very formulaic, he has a nice voice but he's also the original "manufactured" pop star. He's given all of songs and a career, and in no control of his life or music. Just playing the three types of songs and they all sound the same, can't get into it. Also, my Elvis is Fat Elvis. 2 stars

This album started with classic Elvis. Blue Suede Shoes is exactly what you want. Then immediately falls down, then never really recovers. There are still listenable songs on the record but nothing surpasses the outdated to become the classic beyond that intro. This might have been a firestorm in its day but it didn’t hold up for me. (Oh and Little Richard made the definitive version of Tutti Fruitti before this album even dropped.) The king is dead. Long live the shoes.

Wow this is over-rated. Such an iconic debut album but the music just can not stand up to the legacy. Well, maybe the music does but the delivery is where it falls down. This guy is the definition of Style over Content and without the visual it just sounds second rate to me. I had to go listen to Little Richard and Ray Charles to set things right after this finished.

I could personally do without the sappy numbers like ‘I Love You Because,’ or the dreadful ‘Blue Moon.’ Roy Orbison, sure. Elvis, hmm. But when the joint gets jumpin’ with ‘Blue Suede Shoes,’ and ‘I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry,’ this Elvis and this combo could fit very easily into a daylong punk rock jamboree. Still… you know… people whom I adore- John Lennon, as a great example- seem to always adore Elvis just as much. And, at the expense of bordering on rock n’ roll blasphemy, even rockabilly Elvis sounds just ok in this listener’s ears. Just ok. Rock n’ roll can be served up as a fancy, multi-course affair, dinner candles and such. And that’s fine when you’re in the mood. But other times, when you just wanna piece of deep-fried chicken and a biscuit, then 'Elvis Presley' will fill you right up… at least temporarily.
Never been a huge fan of the old Elvis sound. In terms of formative rock I like Bill Haley and the Comets much better. I appreciate this for what it is though. Didn't realize until this play through that he didn't really write any of his original hits. 2/5

I remember enjoying Elvis Presley's songs during my explore-music-through-youtube phase. I liked almost every song from his compilation album, "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits". My general thought about his music as a whole is that the songs usually lie somewhere between ballad and rock-'n'-roll. The closer it is to ballad, the better. I know he's the King of Rock-'n'-roll, but his voice sounds like a wood being sawed when he's singing rock songs. Sorry. When I received his self-titled debut, I expected to hear at least one of the tracks from "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits", perhaps at least "Heartbreak Hotel", one of my favorite Elvis songs. But there is none, because to quote Wikipedia: "In the 1950s, general practice dictated tracks having greater commercial potential to be released as singles, with tracks of lesser appeal placed on albums." And that's probably why this album is such a letdown personally. It felt dull, especially when compared to his other songs. And weirdly, I enjoyed the rockabilly songs more than the ballad ones. Not even the fan beloved "Blue Moon" impressed me. But perhaps it's because the songs here have the minimal production that is observed in "Heartbreak Hotel". But I guess this album is still important for bringing rock-'n'-roll into the mainstream. He covered those rock-'n'-roll songs from people of color so kids who listen to it don't have to lie to their parents that they're listening to a white singer. Perhaps he's definitely the King of Rock-'n'-roll for bringing the genre into the forefront of the music scene. Whether these covers are great is probably a matter of debate. I'm particularly familiar with Little Richard's bluesy banger, "Tutti Frutti". And Presley's cover of it is surprisingly dull, lacking the energy of the original. Overall, influential but not that great.

After “Blue Suede Shoes,” which you already know, Elvis’ self-titled album gets shockingly boring (by today’s standards, to be fair) and even obnoxious at times. A studio album feels like the wrong way to listen to Elvis, anyway. He’s always seemed to me a real performer who should be listened to through his hits and live material. Maybe that’s just me.
I had to listen to listen to this clowns music and movies growing up as my mum was a huge fan. Didn’t like his music then and I don’t like now. There must have been so many better African American singers doing the same thing only much, much better and not getting the recognition they deserved. Thank You Very Much!

I could legitimately give this anything from 5* (because of the extent of its influence) to 1* (because of what that influence means). Obviously it's a hugely important historical document. But as I listened to it--expecting if not to be blown away then at least to recognize something of huge significance--my jaw fell to the floor in recognition at hoe derivative it all was, all I could notice was how his cover versions just weren't all that good in comparison with the earlier recordings of the same songs. Would go out of my way not to listen again, except as a means of confronting what a pernicious influence it was.

In his own odd way, Elvis Presley is kinda the first AI artist. Scraping the halls of black rock n roll greats, co-opting their data and squishing it together in some unnatural amorphous harmonic blob. The output, devoid of any real feeling, is just organized notes on a 4/4 grid. Guitar licks where they're supposed to be. Generated 1's and 0's that are supposed to feel nice in your ear. But at the end of the day, you know they don't really come from him. There's no light behind those eyes. If you're looking for the good shit, search elsewhere.

I like the higher Elvis voice better than his later voice. But these songs are ubiquitous. I don't remember a time when I hadn't heard most of them. Now that being said, Elvis was a pawn of racism and the Black artists who originally wrote and sang these songs should have gotten the money he made from touring and releasing them. It's just a more boring, whiter version of the songs as they originally were. People who say that Elvis is the reason that Rock and Roll got mainstream don't realize that they're attributing their own appreciation of the music genre to the marginalization of people of color. "Oh yeah he didn't write any of these but it made it so that my grandma wouldn't be seen as racist to listen to this music and because of that other white people started making it themselves instead of just pop crooners!" Whatever, I'll get off my soapbox. It just makes me mad that people don't see the literal evil of the whole situation. I got so mad during this that I'm giving it a one.
Im not an Elvis fan. Listening to this album confirms this. His voice is not enjoyable. He sounds like a different person each track. A slight positive is that this was recorded in the 1950s. I believe he got the time of day because he was white and America is historically racist. Elvis is gross and really not that good.
I get that Elvis was a cultural phenomenon. But as music this doesn't really impress me much. He's not doing anything better than Ray Charles or Little RIchard had already done better. Really think we need to re-evaluate Elvis's significance. Could have been worse - could have been a Dylan album. Really debating between 1 and 2 stars.

During the first track I thought, "This is going to be an easy 4 or maybe even 5, despite the terrible mix." By track two I was proven wrong. By track 3 I was annoyed by his voice and the audio levels. By track 4 I remembered why I don't listen to Elvis. The deification of Elvis Presley is a great example of how the lack of choice can influence the popularity of mediocre talent.

I'm no R&B expert, but I listen to enough Blues that listening to this is actively distracting, knowing that there's not a song here that couldn't have been more capably handled by one of Elvis's contemporaries with a less marketable complexion.

Not a fan of Elvis, came in with very low expectations but was pleasantly surprised with the energy in Blue Suede Shoes. I enjoyed it and was ready to listen with an open mind. But that is the one and only track on this album I liked. The rest of the album was terrible. Lowest of the low was tutti frutti, shockingly bad. I don't get the Elvis thing, with few exceptions he produced mostly bad songs and worse movies.
I am really not a fan of this sort of music in general, I find it annoying and it gets old fast because it all sounds the fucking same. It gets even worse with this cunt singing. Not sure if I hate him or his voice more.
