You can hear why he was considered the king, but Im in no rush to listen to the album again

the first Elvis album Definitely feels like it its very funny to see how many songs are covers 2.5

I remember enjoying Elvis Presley's songs during my explore-music-through-youtube phase. I liked almost every song from his compilation album, "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits". My general thought about his music as a whole is that the songs usually lie somewhere between ballad and rock-'n'-roll. The closer it is to ballad, the better. I know he's the King of Rock-'n'-roll, but his voice sounds like a wood being sawed when he's singing rock songs. Sorry. When I received his self-titled debut, I expected to hear at least one of the tracks from "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits", perhaps at least "Heartbreak Hotel", one of my favorite Elvis songs. But there is none, because to quote Wikipedia: "In the 1950s, general practice dictated tracks having greater commercial potential to be released as singles, with tracks of lesser appeal placed on albums." And that's probably why this album is such a letdown personally. It felt dull, especially when compared to his other songs. And weirdly, I enjoyed the rockabilly songs more than the ballad ones. Not even the fan beloved "Blue Moon" impressed me. But perhaps it's because the songs here have the minimal production that is observed in "Heartbreak Hotel". But I guess this album is still important for bringing rock-'n'-roll into the mainstream. He covered those rock-'n'-roll songs from people of color so kids who listen to it don't have to lie to their parents that they're listening to a white singer. Perhaps he's definitely the King of Rock-'n'-roll for bringing the genre into the forefront of the music scene. Whether these covers are great is probably a matter of debate. I'm particularly familiar with Little Richard's bluesy banger, "Tutti Frutti". And Presley's cover of it is surprisingly dull, lacking the energy of the original. Overall, influential but not that great.

very elvisly, dont know. not my type

Couple of fun songs. Nice version of Blue Moon.

I don’t like Elvis. There, I’ve said it.

Some undisputed classics, but Elvis isn’t for me.

I am sure it was a great album at the time and that a lot of artists covered each other at the time but I just couldn't get into the "I got a Woman" or especially the "Tutti Fruiti" covers. The rest of the songs were just okay for me but I do love "Blue Suede shoes" and "Blue Moon" as singles.

Errm, no.

Really didn't care for it. Not much more to say than that. It is not awful but it is definitely not something that I would want to listen to again/regularly

Thought I would like this more than I did. Blue Suede Shoes was the only song I really liked. The rest was ok but not my favorite Presley stuff.

I found it a bit generic but that's probably because he was the first and it's been done to death since!

Apparently it changed rock'n'roll forever, but it's all covers... Pleasant enough to listen to though. Fella's got a good voice. I give it a treasonous 2.5 stars.

A brilliant voice, but (it was recorded in 1956) dated

Eh, it's Elvis.

The fact that Elvis got famous for doing bad Ray Charles and Little Richard covers (among others) is a bit embarrassing. Get your shit together, America. Best track: Blue Suede Shoes

Elvis. Very much Elvis.

Don't know what all the fuss was about

Aaah Elvis, a beautiful man but this wasn’t from the era that I loved him from and it didn’t hold my interest enough to listen again. Is ** mean ?

Sorry, I'm sure it's a classic but I hated it.

I mean, I don't like Elvis at all, but I can't deny that his voice is good. I knew a lot of the tracks in this album, but I can't say that I'm a fan. Yeah, listenable.

yet another example of an album i know is culturally important but just cannot find it in myself to care about

I like the higher Elvis voice better than his later voice. But these songs are ubiquitous. I don't remember a time when I hadn't heard most of them. Now that being said, Elvis was a pawn of racism and the Black artists who originally wrote and sang these songs should have gotten the money he made from touring and releasing them. It's just a more boring, whiter version of the songs as they originally were. People who say that Elvis is the reason that Rock and Roll got mainstream don't realize that they're attributing their own appreciation of the music genre to the marginalization of people of color. "Oh yeah he didn't write any of these but it made it so that my grandma wouldn't be seen as racist to listen to this music and because of that other white people started making it themselves instead of just pop crooners!" Whatever, I'll get off my soapbox. It just makes me mad that people don't see the literal evil of the whole situation. I got so mad during this that I'm giving it a one.

Im not an Elvis fan. Listening to this album confirms this. His voice is not enjoyable. He sounds like a different person each track. A slight positive is that this was recorded in the 1950s. I believe he got the time of day because he was white and America is historically racist. Elvis is gross and really not that good.

I get that Elvis was a cultural phenomenon. But as music this doesn't really impress me much. He's not doing anything better than Ray Charles or Little RIchard had already done better. Really think we need to re-evaluate Elvis's significance. Could have been worse - could have been a Dylan album. Really debating between 1 and 2 stars.

odio a elvis

Elvis… Was a hero to most, but, never meant much to me. Never knew clash took this I guess

I really believe this album was just famouse because he was a white dude taking over black people music. Elvis does have some good songs but there ain't here. Boring Presley was served. Girl, bye.

I'm not a fan of Elvis.

Didn't listen, wasn't in the mood.

Pas mon style

mama not his blue suede shoes-! tried to like it but... sorry... thank fuck I was born in this generation of music

Enough Elvis no more please

hab das album abgebrochen.

Man, fuck Elvis.

Elvis is corny and ass.

Fav Songs: none, they all sound the same and they're all ass Least Fav: all of them 1.4/10

Not a huge Elvis fan to begin with and this is one of his worst

During the first track I thought, "This is going to be an easy 4 or maybe even 5, despite the terrible mix." By track two I was proven wrong. By track 3 I was annoyed by his voice and the audio levels. By track 4 I remembered why I don't listen to Elvis. The deification of Elvis Presley is a great example of how the lack of choice can influence the popularity of mediocre talent.

dnpmo.

I don't listen to Elvis. Fuck Elvis. I'm glad he's dead.

3.5 / 10

Elvis is lame

whatever.

This sh1t sucks

ist mir irgendwie alles zu aufgeregt :/

Not for me.

Elvis sucks

bland and unoriginal

not a fan of the style

I'll never be tricked into liking Elvis.

I felt like I should give it a two since, you know, but this is absolute trash

This album isn't necessarily terrible, but it's definitely "of a time." I'm no R&B expert, but I listen to enough Blues that listening to this is actively distracting, knowing that there's not a song here that couldn't have been more capably handled by one of Elvis's contemporaries with a less marketable complexion.

Terrible. I should have just listened to Blue Suede Shoes and given up. Vocals on "I Love You Because" were particularly bad. I understand it's place in history, but it's just displeasing to endure.

What a goblin.

i dont want to listen to this bro why am i listening to this agh this is so not my type of music too lovey dovey im gonna complain as much as possible imma bring the score of this album so low down i hate this

Yeah, I like Little Richard, too, so I'll probably just listen to him. It was short, though, so there's that.

Tutti Frutti. I can’t accept it.

History showing why this album is on the 1001 list, and history showing why that is a damn shame. Honestly I saw a Tutti Frutti was here, heard it, and immediately dropped the album for Little Richard. Friggin "oh he was controversial for shaking his hips" while Little Richard was shirtless sex on a piano, also everything else.

Diria que ja he escoltat aquest album. Coneixia sa canço tutti frutti. Tot i que n'elvis es un pioner, s'album meh

Not a fan of Elvis, came in with very low expectations but was pleasantly surprised with the energy in Blue Suede Shoes. I enjoyed it and was ready to listen with an open mind. But that is the one and only track on this album I liked. The rest of the album was terrible. Lowest of the low was tutti frutti, shockingly bad. I don't get the Elvis thing, with few exceptions he produced mostly bad songs and worse movies.

I am really not a fan of this sort of music in general, I find it annoying and it gets old fast because it all sounds the fucking same. It gets even worse with this cunt singing. Not sure if I hate him or his voice more.

Elvis SUCKS!!!!!

I had a stamina to listen this until the Tutti Frutti. Then I skipped the rest.

Overrate sf*te!

yeah, not my thing. first album that was a one and done listen through. highlights - blue suede shoes, money honey

I have to squint my ears real fuckin hard to get even a faint whiff of that eerie "dawn of rock / old, weird America" power off this knicknack drawer of cornpone cracker horseshit. I guess this was Elvis' first proper "studio album", and by extension the first real rock n roll album to catch fire, so it has profound historical significance, but it's still full of Elvis giggling and hiccuping all over a bunch of lightweight teenybopper garbage. I'm sorry! I feel bad for not appreciating it! It's fuckin' dull!

Bleghh

unoriginal ass

A hero to most, but he never meant shit to me.

Don't like the lyrics or the way he sings. At least now I know where a woman's place is... surprise surprise.

Revered by many, this remains (to me) about as palatable as eating turd. It’s fucking awful

My least favourite from the rock and roll era.

I see why people love him, but it just didn’t appeal to me that much.. some songs were good though!

Never cared about Elvis.

Nope. Never been an Elvis fan. He does have a song or two that I don't mind, like Suspicious Minds.

An absolute snore. It just isn't very interesting in this day and age, I'm afraid, and classic rock and roll never interested me much to begin with.

I guess this was maybe groundbreaking for a white person to sing these songs, but there's nothing special about it to me. 3/10

Not my style, not my vibe. 50's rock'n'roll is absolutely not my thing.

I tried. I tried twice. Blue suede shoes was a fun start, but it's such a damp squib. Like a floppy nothing record. I got bored. I got bored twice.

Tasapaksu levy jolla hassun kuuloinen laulaja.

worst one yet. His band is tight! But he would be better if he stopped the vibrato and weird owlwolwowowow stuff.

My goodness he's always left me cold and this album has done nothing to change that. Such an annoying voice. What an EARTH is going on with the goofy singing on One-Sided Love Affair specifically? Insufferable. Tutti Frutti is alright because of the nostalgia for Brave Little Toaster it evokes. Did really like Blue Moon - Take 9/M though. Really cool and psychedelic/modern-sounding? Had only heard the Chromatics cover before and liked it a lot/thought I'd massively prefer it but here we are liking original.

A 28 minute long album that sounds like it took 28 minutes to make. Sloppy and often strained vocal performances from Elvis with weak backing instrumentation. It put him on the map though, and that’s the entire reason this album exists.

lately my buddy has been giving me clues to guess the day's new album before i see it. the clue that gave this one away was that despite the acclaim it's not an important album in the slightest & i think that's all that needs to be said about it

I’m not going to waste a lot of words here. I’m not a big Elvis fan but I tried to listen to this with an open mind. Nope. Hot garbage. There’s maybe two songs I can kind of tolerate and that’s pushing it. Have no desire to hear this again. Ever!

White in a bad way.

I'm sure it was good back on the day but I would not listen to this on purpose.

Not at all a fan of Elvis and the cult that followed him around. The vocal styles are irritating and the mix of rockabilly is just uninteresting to me.

Not for me

You can tell on this album that young Elvis is still honing his sound. There are some moments where Buddy Love slips away and Julius Kelp starts to wear through. It's some dated work but for it to be the 1st rock album to ever chart...deserves the list. The album cover has been copied several times by others for it's importance in music history. Certainly an icon and would have liked to see the impact Presley had on everyone and everything 1st hand...1.35.

Better than the prior Elvis I guess but nothing special. I'll hear Blue Suede Shoes again but the rest just fall into skippable Elvis. 1.38 stars

the longest 28 minutes ive ever spent. mindnumbing rock and roll thats slightly redeemed by his vocal chops. horrible otherwise

wow this sucks favorite tracks: none

Not for me. 1/5

Not for me. Blue Suede Shoes is fun and campy, but the I Got A Woman cover is a limp facsimile of the original. I Love You Because is sappy and unoriginal, and Just Because gives me old time revival vibes. The Blue Moon cover, however, has a sparse, interesting interpretation that I actually enjoyed. I know it's unfair, but Elvis has such an identifiable singing style, but unfortunately that sound and style has been relentlessly parodied for 50 years and I cannot take him seriously. When I was a kid, I bought the myth that Elvis was unique, and original, and brought a certain type of rock and roll to the masses. But as I've grown, and discovered that people like Ray Charles, Billy Wright, Little Richard and scores of others were out there doing the same type of music, I fully believe that Elvises level of fame has more to do with his race than his talent. Also, he was a pedophile.

loved it

We can call him the "denigger". It takes black music, puts a white face on it and sells a lot without doing anything

Nej men va fan. Inte mer Elvis. Kräkemoji. Det är så tråkig ointressant musik. En 1a för Blue Suede Shoes och Blue Moon. Killen gillar blått.

Elvis gives me the creeps at the best of times. Having to listen to him sing swooning love songs to what I can only assume are 13/14 year old girls (his favourite) is tough to get through.

Elvis sucks ass, worst thing to ever happen to music.

If I rated his ability to steal songs from black people, it's be a 5/5. But I am solely rating this album, so it's gonna be a 1/5. Not a fan of his voice. A-bop-bop-a-loom-op a-lop-bop-boom

didn‘t like it; his voice is not agreable to my ears

I've never been an Elvis guy. The affectation in his voice has always rubbed me the wrong way. "One-Sided Love Affair" is the most ridiculous example of this. It's goofy af. And that must be it because I've fully enjoyed other musicians playing similar whitewashed "blues"/early rock n roll who don't sing like this. Blech.

1/10 Holy hell, do I not like this. The rock is ok, but it is done better by those who came before and after. The slow country and ballads are the sleepiest horseshit. There is no passion here, only technique and even that's lacking. In summary, no, sir, I don't like it. 4-4-2024

The quintessential one-star album. A talentless predator riding on the coat-tails of better men and better artists. 0.5/5.0: Unlistenable

The OG of stealing black music and giving nothing back

I just don’t understand the hype around Elvis. He has a decent singing voice, but his style in delivery is so over the top that if fits better as a cartoon character than it does an actual artist. It also bothers me that this can be considered as one of the great albums when he isn’t credited once as a writer for the song. I might enjoy one of the song on the album from time to time, but as a whole, there is absolutely nothing glueing this as one product other than that all of the songs are extremely short. The processing on his vocals are drastically different from song to song, and there is no main overarching idea for any collection of the album. Just not enjoyable to listen to all the way through at all. 1/5

Early rock 'n' roll is tediously repetitive. Elvis appropriated country and blues (to put it politely) and I find his posturing and peculiar, affected pronunciation and singing style more annoying than the monotonous music. He sounds like a parody of himself.

Very "bluesie" sound

He's a cultural appropriator i feel like I'm crossing a picket line. but hey! music.

Not good

Boring

Was angry. Don't think I'd like regardless

I've never listened to an Elvis album in it's entirety before and I hope never to again. Devoid of substance. This guy was good looking and likely the right face at the right time but not a musical talent as far as I'm concerned.

one good song. The rest is boring. It is dated. 5 stars if you like old music.

Blue Suede Shoes was great. The rest was garbage. Love songs with a pitch he can't reach or or overly affected vocals that come off more absurd than the Elvis parodies I've heard throughout my life.

Too oldschool

Garbage

I knew i wasnt gonna rate this high anyway, judging how he whitewashed rock n roll by doing songs by black artists but worse, but i underestimated how boring this album would actually be to listen to.

Eh. He's OK. I don't get the appeal. Most of the songs are covers and not as good as the original versions. Pretty wild that you could be the most famous artist in the world back then doing other people's songs worse than they did.

not a fan tbh

Mercifully short record from The Memphis Flash. Blue Suede Shoes still has some punch and there are a couple of other tracks that I don't mind. His renditions of I Got a Woman and Tutti Fruitti however *pale* in comparison to other performances of these songs. Sorry King, it ain't my thing.

Pretty mad that this album invented rock and roll In all seriousness though, this… kind of sucks. I was expecting a lot more as I do enjoy quite a few Elvis songs from this era, but they all seem to have been either standalone singles or from EPs. Blue Suede Shoes is a great opener but the rest of the songs are either pretty subpar covers that have been done miles better by other artists (I’ve Got a Woman, Blue Moon, the somehow energy-less Tutti Frutti) or are just very bland, and often with incredibly annoying vocal inflections

Ugh Elvis. What a struggle to listen to because the originals are vastly superior. I understand he helped bring Rock 'n Roll to the mainstream but that's only because most if not all of the songs were originally written by black people and America is racist. I would much rather listen to all of the originals except the country songs can be thrown away. This album was difficult to listen to and his voice is annoying. It's awful. Find the original versions of the songs and listen to those instead.

I’d rather listen to the original artists this culture vulture stole from. He’s charismatic and can sing but I find him highly overrated.

Well thank god that's over! Makes me understand why there are so many Elvis impersonators. Even Elvis sounds like some schmuck "doing" Elvis.

Simple and catchy music. Basically pop rock produced to be commercialized with little to no substance in this music. I can give him credit at being a great vocalist and entertainer. He also brought certain genres mainstream because of his popularity so he was influential for the time. Some parts are fun but it might as well just be a collection of singles.

fuck elvis, fuck the 50s, fuck rock and roll

Didn’t finish, reminds me of Abby

I just never got into Elvis. He's the Don Corleone of rock music: he's the original, but his biggest fans have ended up making it so that Elvis became a parody of himself.

Disappointing. Just made me want to listen to actual rythme and blues from the time

I had a hard time getting through this one. Elvis is not my taste

Did not listen. I honestly can't stand Elvis's mush-mouthed singing, but don't tell Aunt Sue.

28 min of racist appropriation!

I didn't realize that the first song on the first elvis album was blue suede shoes I'm not the hugest elvis fan, but he's the king so i guess i gotta listen Got into a huge fight with my father about a third of the way through this album! Pretty excited about that, and it definitely hasn't soured my listening experience at all. Ok tutti fruitti is annoying as shit I don't remember a single song off of this record, besides blue suede shoes, which i liked. I guess i can see why people like elvis, but I don't think i do.

oh this is painful

i am a murderer

can only stand his voice for so long - makes most songs sound the same. no songs really stood out. 5/10
