It's Elvis

Well, he is after all known as the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll”. Music was different back in the 1950’s and it’s evident Elvis set the world on fire with this record, even though it could be seen as boring by contemporary standards.

Some of the rockier ones were okay. Really not a fan of the ballads, and I thought his version of Blue Moon was really not very good. As the Beatles had covered a number of these tunes and done them much better, I was left with the creeping feeling that Elvis is really overrated.

Everything that can be said about Elvis has been said already. No doubt, this is one of the most important records to be released in the past century and the influence these songs had on a whole generation of fans and future musicians can't be denied. I like his earlier music, rockabilly and the early days of rock 'n' roll, as Elvis was still finding his groove. His biggest hits were still to come!

I've never heard this album before. I'm not a fan of Elvis, but I am familiar with his standards and acknowledge that he's a phenomenal performer. I'm a little surprised this is included as a "must listen" album. There must be a better example of Elvis magic. This isn't it for me. There are some impressive performances IMO, but it feels like a first album. Nothing in particular shines above what I know Elvis becomes. If the point of "must listen" is hinged upon the influence this album had in 1956, I can't relate. I wasn't there and I can't imagine. I can only judge this album by my personal feeling when I listen to it as a whole and how that relates to everything in my music knowledge. This album is not cohesive, it seems like an odd collection of song. I feel that I have been moved by Elvis before, and I do like some of the songs here, but none of the songs on this album spark much for me. My highlights: Trying To Get To You, Blue Moon, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry

It still holds up - most tracks are top 10 stuff. 5/5

The songs err on the side of simplicity, as far as my current tastes are concerned. And while this may have been cutting edge 66 years ago, I judge the music today.

More coherent an album than I expected.

Despite my Elvis phase as a kid, this wasn’t my favorite album. I’d be happy if it was playing in the background because it was good, but it isn’t something I’m going to listen to on repeat

What a voice! I knew I would like this album. So easy to listen to. But, as it was common in pop music back when, most of these songs are covers. And some of the originals are WAY better. That being said Elvis is pretty great.

One hears plenty of the "old weird America" – consider the haunting sweetness of "I'm Counting on You" and the straight-up eerienees of "Blue Moon." The simplicity – even purity – of the playing is very attractive and one wonders if contemporary acts wouldn't benefit from adopting such a direct approach. Sure, it can seem corny, but it feels almost punk consideiring the schmaltzy, sequined endpoint to come. In other words, one gets why Elivs was Elvis. Points off for "Tutti Frutti."

Classic and catchy

I really like Elvis. And to start an album with Blue Suede Shoes seems like this would be stronger than it actually is. The cover of Tutti Frutti is just over-indulgent. I'm sure this had an effect on some people, just not me.

Clearly it is iconic and legendary in the what it meant to the changing landscape of music and the beginning of Elvis' career. I'll give it credit for it's role, but overall, not of fan of pretty simple-sounding rockabilly/blues. Fine, but it isn't something i would listen to today.

It's really remarkable listening to the debut album knowing how Elvis's influence would shake the world, and how it continues to do so. My only knock here is that they really did a thing, and stuck to the thing so closely - but they did it so well that's hardly a complaint.

I like Elvis' Sun Sessions material, some of which is used here. It has a raw vitality and moodiness to it that he never quite captured again as he became a more polished pop act. This album was an absolute phenomenon, which, as we move further away from its release, becomes harder to understand the true depth of its significance. I know that culturally this should be a 5 for its impact. It's one of the keystones of rock and roll, upon which everything else is built, and sort of tipping point for the genre, but the thing that really gets to me is when he covers things like "I Gotta Woman" or "Tutti Frutti," and they just pale in comparison to the originals. Drags the whole thing down. Also, mixing the Sun and RCA material gives it a weird, unbalanced feel. I will give him one thing though; he is a hell of an emotive singer. As a purely subjective listening experience this is a 3 for me (though the Sun material is more of a 4-5).

In terms of personal enjoyment it's a 3, but for legacy it's a 5, for the time this was huge for popular music, especially 1956. There is a range here of influences which is interesting. Also interesting is how short the songs are, it's like they were made for a quick intense dance with a small breather in between tracks. Between my enjoyment and legacy I'll average the two.

Really enjoyed how subdued a lot of these songs were, and at an easy 30 minutes this went down very easily. I know Elvis is like a Rorschach test for people, but just listening to this by itself with no outside bias I really loved this album for what it accomplishes

1956, mad. maybe it's been remastered every coulpe of decades but the quality of this is high well higher than i'd expect for nigh on 70 years ago. don't enjoy the ballads, but the rock and roll stuff is good fun.

I heard a girl did step on his blue suede shoes and Elvis lost his mind and beat her to death. The guilt caught up with him, he ate himself to death and died on the toilet having a wank into a massive sandwich.

By far the best Elvis album.

I don't really know how to rate this album. On the other hand, apart from Blue Suede Shoes, I found most of it boring and unrelatable. I can't decide whether I love or loathe Blue Moon, the guy sounds like he's singing from the bottom of a well. On the other hand, it's the debut of ELVIS and was undeniably influential.

Elvis was good. I don't think this needs to be qualified in any way.

Most of the songs are pretty fun and entertaining. Some did not age well, with some sexist lyrics though. Majority are mildly good, with classics sprinkled in as well. 6/10

So groovy and makes me just want to boogie. Wasn't so interested in the slower songs I suppose, but there's definitely a reason why they call him the King of Rock and Roll! Favourite: Blue Suede Shoes

I can see why he was big for his time. But it doesn't do much for me overall. Thankfully its a short album.

It’s not perfect, and the production quality is variable, but there’s a raw, carefree energy present, a sense of danger and excitement that gradually disappeared from Elvis’s music as his career progressed and he got older, and that what’s so striking and enjoyable about his debut. It’s the sound of a young man nailing it in 28 minutes.

Elvis is The King of course, but I don’t find this impressive more than that it’s fun to listen to. His ballads are still his best.

A quick 29-min, 12 song album. Mostly really good songs that are a great snapshot of early Elvis but I'll probably always find myself listening to greatest hits rather than coming back to this record as a whole. I can definitely see how this was important but there are just lots of covers and filler that's common for a first record that make it less essential for me personally. Blue Suede Shoes - a classic, still great. Best song on the album. I'm Counting on You - croony, paint by numbers country song. I Got a Woman - not as good as the original but fun cover. One-Sided Love Affair - fun, upbeat 1-4-5 song with interesting vocal affectations. I Love You Because - nice, slow, down tempo love song. Just Because - country skiffle song, pretty good but not a big standout. Tutti Frutti - not as good as the original but decent cover. Trying to Get to You - great vocal performance and cool lead guitar. I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You) - good, simple 2 minute song that just sounds very standard early Elvis. I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin') - very down tempo love song. Not a standout. Picks up unexpectedly in the last 30 seconds. Blue Moon (Take 9/M) - best cover on the album. Really nice vocal performance. Longest track on the album at 2 min 44 sec. Money Honey - another great vocal performance. I really like the piano. Guitar is a bit surfy.

Still not a huge Elvis fan, but I appreciated how fast this moves.

So much fun! I had never heard many of these, which made it feel surprisingly fresh. Just judging this as an album of music, it's beside the point whether these records are as good as the sources. The blend of musical traditions gave them a special flavor that's worth experiencing. It all feels very human, and even the flaws made me smile.

Fine i guess? Without the context from the time the music here just doesnt hold up all that well. Not terrible by any means, not interesting either. At least the extremely short runtime ensures it doesnt overstay its welcome.

"Elvis Presley" is the debut album from Elvis Presley. The songs were revorded in 1956 at RCA Victor studios in Nashville and New York City and at Sun Studios in Memphis in 1954-1955. RCA Victor's Steve Sholes took a chance on Elvis Presley and rock and roll based on his No. 1 single "Heartbreak Hotel" buying out his Sun Studios contract for $40,000. Good move. At the time, hit songs were released as singles while lesser songs were put on albums. This album was unusual in that it contained all his singles. Well, it was successful becoming the first rock and roll album to top the Billboard album charts and sold over 1,000,000 copies in 1956. It also has the iconic album cover of the Elvis photo taken in Tampa circa 1955 (Thanks Dave) and the design was later obviously echoed/copied by the Clash for "London Calling." All the 12 songs roughly clock in at 2 minutes and were written by someone other than Elvis. The album starts with the classic Carl Perkins' song "Blue Suede Shoes" considered one of the first rockabilly songs combining R&B, country and rock and roll. Elvis definitely made it his own. Check out the great guitar by Chet Atkins. Elvis picks up the pace covering Eay Charles' "I Got a Women." He is getting that Elvis bravado going. Elvis flexes his crooning on the ballad " I Love You Because." Side one ends with the 1929 country cover "Just Because," a good example of taking a country song and making it rock and roll. Side two starts with Elvis doing "Tutti Frutti" I don't know if Elvis added anything beyond what Little Richard did but it is Elvis. The album ends with Elvis at his most Elvis and "Money Honey." His crackling voice. A cover of the Jesse Stone-written song. This song has hints of "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Hound Dog." I also hear a lot of similarities in the music to Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock." I believe Elvis may have some better albums in the near future but this one is historic for all the reasons mentioned in the first paragraph and showcases a lot of his incredible talents.

It’s early Elvis. So there’s a swagger about it. But a lot of these song are simply fine. Like a lot of “The Kings” discography. Blue Suede Shoes is fine. Tutti Frutti is better from Little Richard.

You can definitely hear the seeds of a dozen other albums in this one.

Good when it's good but so much average in here and kinda prosaic musically, although that might've been revolutionary at the time.

A little underwhelmed by this - Here's Little Richard came out a year after this and feels so much fresher and full of energy. There's tastes of it here - Blue Suede Shoes and Tutti Frutti have that oomph - but it's a bit too croonery for my liking. Doesn't feel like a revolution. 3/5, closer to a 2 than a 4 though.

Another one I liked more than I expected to. I don't know if I'd listen to this on the regular, but it's quite catchy. 3.25/5

Enjoy the guitar playing and vocal delivery. Probably wouldn't return to it, but enjoyable.

Still not the biggest Elvis guy, but this has some cool tracks on it. Mostly, anyway- his “Tutti Frutti” couldn’t possibly compare to Little Richard. But the rest of these tracks show off his pipes, and the backing band is solid. B

A fun and generally very good album. Not as strong as Buddy Holly and the Chirping Crickets which has fewer ballads and country songs but Elvis' voice is quite remarkable even on the songs that I don't like...the country flavoured tunes. Not quite 5 but 4.5 stars.

Undoubtably a important album. Find it hard to appreciate how unique this must have sounded upon release.

This was a fun little blast of a listen. Rock n Roll but without the horns I usually associate with the genre. I'm not really a fan of Presley but he was undeniably electric here. The super short 2 min tracks of the time feel quite odd these days.

It arguably all started here. What is not arguable is that this was the first rock and roll record to hit number one. In retrospect it is a bit uneven, but that is a minor quibble. Elvis is the King.

A very good, but not great album. It shows Elvis Presley's range as a singer. I think the best thing about this record is it's album cover, which the Clash later updated to be one of the most iconic covers of all time.

An album on this list more for its importance than how it sounds today. While it was revolutionary at the time of its release, today it sounds quaint and like a relic of another time. We do get tastes of all of the genres that influenced Elvis and together create rock and roll (blues, country, rockabilly, gospel etc.) along with some covers of early rock and roll songs, so In that sense it is an excellent historical document. I found it interesting that there is only one of Elvis’ many hits on this album. Aside from Blue Suede Shoes there are no hits! At least none that are still hits in 2022.

Ignoring the huge influence this had on music and culture in general, this is not really that enjoyable today. It's from the 50s so of course it hasn't aged the best. I don't want to give it any pity points for being super old or something - just completely going off my enjoyment, it's a 2/5. Some songs were fine. "Tutti Frutti" was probably my favorite if I had to pick one.

He's just good

We'll how fitting I get to review Elvis on the 45th anniversary of his death. I can still see my grandmother crying..... Memories of childhood, my mother, my grandmother, the Kenner's and the Johnson's, every time I hear Elvis. Back to the music, as soon as I saw the artist I knew I would enjoy. Definitely brought a smile to my face. I enjoyed them all. Favorites are Trying to get to you, Money Honey and Blue suede shoes. Imo, not his best album, but very good. Solid 4 music. Definite 5 for sentimental reasons

4 This couldn’t have come at a better time for me. After seeing the movie and listening to its soundtrack I’ve been all in on Elvis music lately. I honestly wasn’t expecting much from his debut, I figured it would be too old timey sounding. It turned out to be like Johnny Cash with an edge and I enjoyed that very much. The slower ballads left a little to be desired but not so much that they ruined the experience. All in all, solid debut. Favorites:

4 At this risk of being a bit biased, I can't understate how well-timed this album is. On a particularly rough day when I wanted nothing but comfort music to soak myself in, this album took me back to my childhood. Elvis Presley is among the first artists I can ever remember listening to in my lifetime, and his star-studded, clean-cut, poster boy image was everything I wanted to be. As an adult, while I can acknowledge a great deal of his success came from profiting off of the music of lesser-known black artists, it's hard not to see the charm in his music today I saw all those years ago. Despite it being his first, Elvis oozes rock star energy all over this record, and it's not hard to see why he would go on to become one of the most-recognized musicians of all-time. It's not the most rounded record, but it's a fun, quick listen, and I always have a good time when I return to it. Favorites songs: Blue Suede Shoes, I Got a Woman, Blue Moon, Money Honey

It was okay, can’t imagine myself listening to it much after this though.

I know around half the songs. More guitars than later crooning material, but I don’t like the change in register of Ellis’ voice in a few of these. Not as iconic as I was expecting. 1968-1973 might be a better period, so a low three.

Lo! Rock and roll is born. Or at least done very well. Economy and attitude are the key ingredients, with Elvis requiring only half a rhythm (but mostly getting a whole one) to goof along to on the rockers. Requires next to nothing on the ballads. Face it, he'd have you peeling off your undies if he was doing this a capella.

The elvis movie came out recently and learning more about elvis and how much of a creep he was makes it hard to separate the art from the artist. now that the narrative of elvis and his actions/life are more prevalent in pop culture, i am just jaded in regards to him and his music and don't necessarily like him. that being said, I'll try to be as objective as I can in listening. lol I guess this is his first album so it holds an important place in music history. setting the blueprint for the music to come. one sided love affair is low key annoying, the way he's singing. hearing him sing higher is weird. blue moon is the song from this. overall good album, easy to listen to mostly

Fun to drive to. Interesting to hear all the “filler” tracks to get a sense of what people were listening to back in the day. Blue Suede Shoes is a classic but hearing everything else gives it more context. Cool piece of rock n roll/pop music history.

So this was his 1st album! That's what I call hitting the ground running. Lots of really good songs on here: Blue Suede Shoes, I Got A Woman, Tutti Frutti, but my favourite is the less know song Blue Moon. (The Blue Moon Boys was the nickname of the band on this album) He is the King and this is one of the precious few LPs before he went to the army and died.

I like the rockabilly twang and his delivery on songs like Blue Suede Shoes, I Gotta Woman and One-sided Love Affair. It's easy to se how he would have turned a lot of heads in the mid-fifties. His voice seems off-pitch and wavering on the ballads, which aren't my cup of tea. Great album cover.

The influence of Presley on Rock & Roll is undeniable. But I also see that these are all covers and he didn't write any original material so that must be factored in. I'm not sure if he credited and/or paid royalties to the Black musicians that originally wrote most of these songs either (see Led Zeppelin), but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. For me, the only stand-out song on this album is Blue Suede Shoes and the other songs are pretty meh, but I'm sure lots of girls swooned and fainted when he performed them live back in the day.

4/5 Fantastic debut album from Elvis. Decent production, good selection of songs covered. Favourite Cover was Blue Moon. It's quite different to other versions.

Great classic music

Not only did Elvis steal his music and rip off black artists, he also ripped off his album artwork from the Clash. What a jerk.

For possibly being the album that helped launch or break through rock and roll, there's a lot of slow and sappy country and western on "Elvis Presley." If only it all could have been as exciting as "Blue Suede Shoes." But instead, "I'm Counting on You" and "I Love You Because" are boring, "One-Sided Love Affair" and "Just Because" are a bit annoying, and Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" is much better. Elvis is electric and dynamic and charismatic, but it's a bit unfortunate that it took this white pretty-boy to popularize a sound that was largely being created by black artists like Little Richard and others. That said, while this album does have an indelible place in rock and roll history, it has some tracks that really pull down the vibe and the score.

Wikipedia tells me this is "the first rock and roll album ever to make it to the top of the [Billboard] chart." Even though I will never actively chose to listen to Elvis, I can't give this anything less than 3 stars for the cultural significance and for bringing rock and roll into the mainstream.

Never been an Elvis fan - I can’t stand the warbling lol. Some of the songs are fun, but it feels like there just isn’t much substance. Lyrics are super simple and repetitive.

Impressive for its time

Simple and catchy music. Basically pop rock produced to be commercialized with little to no substance in this music. I can give him credit at being a great vocalist and entertainer. He also brought certain genres mainstream because of his popularity so he was influential for the time. Some parts are fun but it might as well just be a collection of singles.

Definitely way ahead of its time! But man, you can sing about something other than love.

"Blue Suede Shoes", the covers of "I Got A Woman" and "Tutti Frutti", that incredibly moody "Blue Moon" ballad... Here are a few of the highlights from Elvis' historical first LP. Everything here points to a landmark album, contrary to that "Elvis Is Back" record that's also part of this list for reasons that have more to do with marketing than genuine influence. This one is the soundtrack *par excellence* for every American diner out there, from Memphis to Tokyo. Of course, Elvis is not the originator of true rock n' roll, African Americans were. But it's hard to deny the appeal and cultural imprint this seminal record left on... well, almost *everything* that came right after it! And even far later than that (see the lettering on the cover of The Clash's *London Calling*, for instance...) So 5 stars, if only for that. Some absolute classic songs on here, and his performances are out of this world, but poor recording quality and short basic songs hurt this album a little

As Elvis' first album, this was a short and sweet listen, but not much more than that. I can see myself bumping this album while playing New Vegas. Or I'll just stick to the in-game radio...

I'm not too much of a Elvis listener, but this album is SO EASY. There are a couple of tracks that i'd rather not have there, but the record is already short as it is, so they serve a function. Maybe 3.8 rather than a 4

p24. 1956. 3 stars. Primeval white rock'n'roll. Even after this time, the voice is terrific. Fabulous guitar solos from Scotty Moore, and Bill Black and DJ Fontana are rock solid on bass and drums. Set against that, there is an awful lot of filler, especially on the maudlin ballads, and some of the covers don't add anything to the originals. When this is good it's excellent - it's there are just too many average songs to give this anything other than a 3. But that voice...

This is rather timely for me, seeing as how the Elvis biopic is coming out soon (or is out? I don't know, I only keep tabs on arthouse films). It had to be him. You know how things were in the 50s when it came to nascent rock and roll. The prime originators of the genre, who happened to be Black, wouldn't get the most out of the notoriety that Elvis put forth. So he had to be the blueprint. Rock and roll had to be molded in his image and it's an image that still captivates in these two centuries, from album cover on down. Sure, the songs are all covers but there is also conviction and purpose and Elvis had that in spades. If it wasn't for this album, who knows how the next several years would turn out. Maybe it'd be dismal, maybe nothing would change. We'll never know because the path forward only takes less than thirty minutes.

Hmm, Elvis doesn't really do it for me. This is his early stuff as well and that rawness comes across. Great voice, but it didn't land for me.

Good album, not because it's Elvis, but because it's legitimately a good album. Blue Suede Shoes probably the best, most recognizable song on the album but all else strong. A couple covers I noticed. 8/10.

This is a nice album that became classical for obvious reasons.

I mean I get why this was revolutionary for its time but it’s not an album I’m gonna pick up on my own or incorporate into any playlists. Blue Suede Shoes and Blue Moon are classics, but when I listen to Elvis (and I do love me some Elvis), I go for other albums lol. I’m gonna rate it for my experience

Starts with a bang...Blue Suede Shoes. There is some let up afterwards but not much. Sometimes I do feel his vocals are like his acting; overdone! But in general the production is clean and the vocal performance spot on. Other hilights; I got a woman, I'm counting on you, Blue Moon and Money Honey. But, personally I'll take Buddy Holly everyday and twice on Sundays. 4 🌟

People must have been desperate back then. A little energy in simple melodies combined with lirycs mostly about physical affection. I took a sigh of relief when it ended. I understand the cult of Elvis and impact of this album on a generation, maybe more, but I wouldn't consider it a great record. Highlight: Tutti Frutti (for deep lirycs)

I haven't found a place to stand on Elvis really. I have some good and bad feelings about the guy. Music on this album didn't stand out. Blue Suede Shoes is a bop but I don't like it really, and I do like Tutti Frutti as a song but there are many better performances of the song. Otherwise, no other songs left much of an impression.

I've never listened to an Elvis album start to finish, though I do like lots of individual songs. Weirdly the album cover makes me think of an Izod ad or something. I'm going to leave aside the problematic nature of the music, album, and Elvis' success off the back of cultural appropriation. While relevant cultural context it's not something I feel like I can comment on intelligently. Sticking just to the music this album just roars out of the gate with Blue Suede Shoes. They definitely knew how to rock and roll back then. The songs are each a little sparkly burst of joy and energy, like fireworks that delight and quickly disappear to make room for the next explosion. Although some of the ballads, like I'll Never Let You Go, are more miss than hit. And there's maybe a little more twang than I would strictly prefer. Overall, though, fun from start to finish.

Amazing songs (NOT written by Elvis) that are sung by an amazing performer. Looking at it strictly from an entertainment and enjoyment perspective, this is a solid 5/5 album. The vocals are just so solid, energetic, and magical. The songs as originally sung by their respective artists are great as well, but Elvis' voice is just something special.

When an album opens with Blue Suede Shoes, you immediately land in familiar ground. Even if you don't love Elvis, he's ingrained in our psyche and this album is him at his rockabilly best with a brief interlude for I Love You Because.

Shame so many people stole the King's music and pre-dated it to the release of this album.

Was originally pretty excited to have an Elvis album to listen too. However this album disappointed me a bit. It’s 12 songs and just under 30 mins. The songs are short and quick. Some are up tempo and feels like it plays at double speed. Some of these songs his voice is a bit higher pitch which felt odd for Elvis. Kind of underwhelming overall but it did show that he had potential. 5.3/10

It seems really strange now that an artist could put out an album composed entirely of cover songs and use it as a platform to become one of the most famous people on the face of the earth. It's a testimony the Elvis's charisma that he is able to pull this off. This album doesn't feature many of what I would consider to be Elvis's best songs. Instead we're treated to a bunch of songs that had been released in the years before this album by other artists who did more definitive versions. There are some exceptions. I think Presley's versions of Blue Suede Shoes and Blue Moon may be better than the originals. However, he adds nothing to songs like I Got a Woman and Tutti Fruity. Presley gets a lot of credit for bringing the music of black artists to white audiences, but I'm not sure that that helped the black artists all that much. This album sounds okay. Elvis's style is very distinctive and is already well-developed here. The lack of originality in the compositions works against him here. It's fine that he didn't write his own music, but I can't get over the fact that Elvis got famous doing cover songs that were substantially similar to artists who were still trying to be discovered by the world at large. This album did a disservice to people like Carl Perkins and Little Richard. It makes the album feel a bit shallow, since Elvis's looks seem to have a lot to do with why he was so successful where original artists weren't. He is a talented musician, there's no denying it, and his voice is heavenly. It just feels like he's stealing other people's glory with this album 3/5

So I listened to an album called Elvis (1956) on YouTube, and after perusing the reviews I've found out that what I listened to was not at all this album as it did not have any of the songs mentioned by others here. Luckily I already know most of those so I'm not going to listen to another one, you hear one Elvis album you've heard them all. He has three styles, the uptempo rockabilly, the blues, and the love (or gospel) croon. Very formulaic, he has a nice voice but he's also the original "manufactured" pop star. He's given all of songs and a career, and in no control of his life or music. Just playing the three types of songs and they all sound the same, can't get into it. Also, my Elvis is Fat Elvis. 2 stars

I can really only imagine how this must have sounded to white people when it first came out: this is a really solid album that lays the foundation for some of Elvis’ best work later on. The hits are great, and his version of “Blue Moon” is a surprising lo-fi knockout.

The King

My mother in-law is a big Elvis fan. So my wife knows a good deal more about him than I would. I do listen to him from time to time, so I was familiar with a lot of these. While I know a number of rock songs were later sung by white artists, hearing "Tutti Frutti" sung by Elvis is just... weird. It's just such an iconic song, and having someone else do it and not change it up more... it doesn't sound right. I'm sure there's stuff of mine that my kid thinks "that's Dad-music." But he has been listening to Rush and Zeppelin, so I don't know. I really consider this "parent music," and it's just nothing I get into. Roll into that people calling him the King of Rock and Roll when they basically ignore a huge percentage of the population, it does take some of the enjoyment out. Still, what he does he does well. It's just not for me.

I don't know. I struggle with this whole era, where everyone is doing the same songs in their own style. Where's the originality? And how do you rate an artist who basically just sings and plays an instrument? I would roast a pop star from today's era who did that. I guess I'm rating the album but I didn't find it that interesting on first listen. Part of the problem is, from what I understand, the best music was released as singles back then. So albums contained weaker tracks. I'd agree here. This was the birth of rock and roll and the energy or passion on the album comes and goes. Blue Suede Shoes was great and in fact the first half of the album was pretty solid. I'm Counting on You was not as good (sound quality also weak); I Love You Because is a better soft ballad. Elvis' version of Tutti Frutti is inferior to Little Richard's. But he brings it back with Trying to Get to You. The last 4 tracks were a bit meh (including this version of Blue Moon - terrible arrangement). The album got noticeably better on second listen though. So, redeemed but not amazing.

I totally get why this album is on the 1001 albums list. The historical significance of it cannot be disputed. There are also some great session musicians on here including Chet Atkins and Floyd Cramer. The songs are catchy and pleasant enough. With all that being said this album doesn't really do much for me with the exception of the two blue songs: "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Blue Moon". I found the songwriting on Elvis is Back which came out a few years later to be a bit more interesting.

This review took me a while because I kept feeling like I was missing something. It could be generational, but I haven't been blown away by much of what I've heard. His version of Hound Dog is a sloppy non-sensical mess next to Big Mama Thornton's. I thought Elvis is Back! (our previous pick) was boring. At least I thought this debut album was better, but I still was having a hard time seeing what was GREAT. So, I did a real deep dive. I compared Elvis's versions of these songs to the previous versions (only 2 songs on the album are debuts, although Elvis didn't write anything - that wasn't a "thing" back then). I also watched some videos to compare. Here are my two main takeaways: 1) In almost all cases, Elvis's version is faster and wilder. In some cases that made the song more exciting, but it wasn't always a better thing. 2) You can't fully appreciate Elvis without the visual part. Elvis had moves and charisma and style. I watched various early performances, focusing on videos around the time this album came out. That's really what I think grabbed people. For example, Carl Perkins' original Blue Suede Shoes is a good track. Slower, but basically the same song. I watched a video of Carl Perkins and he was clearly the superior musician - great voice and really good guitar playing. But then I watched Elvis perform it and he was in a different league when it came to energy and charisma (and I guess sex appeal if that's your thing). So, I think to understand why Elvis was considered GREAT you can't just listen, you have to watch. I'm giving this album a 4 not a 5 because the album is just the music, not the entire package. It's really enjoyable but a lot of the individual tracks are done better by others (for example, Little Richard's original Tutti Frutti is so much better. Then again, Little Richard IS rock & roll). The only track on this debut album I didn't like was Blue Moon. I listened to the first recorded version of this Rodgers & Hart standard (recorded by Ted Fio Rito and His Orchestra) and that was much better than the Elvis version (incidentally, the definitive version of Blue Moon is the later doo wop version by the Marcels with the famous doo wop line that I won't even attempt to type - just go listen). Favorite Tracks: Blue Suede Shoes, I Got a Woman (but go listen to the Ray Charles version!), One-Sided Love Affair (Elvis's singing style on this song is very entertaining), I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You), I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin'), Money Honey.

Who doesn’t love Elvis? I had never listened to one of his albums in its entirety, which is probably true for many of these artists, but I enjoyed this. I didn’t know this was the first rock and roll album ever to make it to the top of the charts.

Pretty good! I'm sure that this was a lot more groundbreaking in 1956 as opposed to 2022, but I still like it. I really liked the lead guitar throughout the album. I'm not the biggest 50s rock fan, but this still holds up, even if it didn't knock my socks off.

This album started with classic Elvis. Blue Suede Shoes is exactly what you want. Then immediately falls down, then never really recovers. There are still listenable songs on the record but nothing surpasses the outdated to become the classic beyond that intro. This might have been a firestorm in its day but it didn’t hold up for me. (Oh and Little Richard made the definitive version of Tutti Fruitti before this album even dropped.) The king is dead. Long live the shoes.

Can very much appreciate the impact of this as The King's first proper album. I've never listened to it in full but the songs are classics. Blue Suede Shoes was a pivotal moment in rock. The swagger and legacy of the King makes this an important album but Tutti Frutti and the like are overly sanitised and, for that reason, it's 3 stars.

Wow this is over-rated. Such an iconic debut album but the music just can not stand up to the legacy. Well, maybe the music does but the delivery is where it falls down. This guy is the definition of Style over Content and without the visual it just sounds second rate to me. I had to go listen to Little Richard and Ray Charles to set things right after this finished.

This is the king of rock'n'roll. I've got this album: nice album! Here he makes some covers, great covers. And all the songs are very good.

Quite honestly, I know I *should* be using words like "groundbreaking" and "revelatory" etc etc etc. But on listening back to this, with about four exceptions, it really just isn't that great. In fact, in places, it is downright awkward. Elvis hadn't discovered his 'voice' yet and flits between some pretty bizarre vocal affectations that sound really quite bizarre in places. And, stone me, the songwriting isn't all that either.

There’s movie Elvis, gospel Elvis, Elvis in the military, DEA Elvis! But the 1001ers charge is to review just the one particular LP given- in this case, rockabilly Elvis, as yet unfouled by fame and fortune Elvis. The cover reveals it all- just stripped down, pure rockin’ Elvis and the boys. Well, at least on most of the tracks. I could personally do without the sappy numbers like ‘I Love You Because,’ or the dreadful ‘Blue Moon.’ Roy Orbison, sure. Elvis, hmm. But when the joint gets jumpin’ with ‘Blue Suede Shoes,’ and ‘I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry,’ this Elvis and this combo could fit very easily into a daylong punk rock jamboree. Still… you know… people whom I adore- John Lennon, as a great example- seem to always adore Elvis just as much. And, at the expense of bordering on rock n’ roll blasphemy, even rockabilly Elvis sounds just ok in this listener’s ears. Just ok. Rock n’ roll can be served up as a fancy, multi-course affair, dinner candles and such. And that’s fine when you’re in the mood. But other times, when you just wanna piece of deep-fried chicken and a biscuit, then 'Elvis Presley' will fill you right up… at least temporarily.

All in all a pretty good album. Contains some essential Elvis songs but also contains quite a few filler songs that aren't at all memorable. But also a couple of underrated sleeper tracks. Just a good nice easy listen.

Elvis's debut in all of its glory. What a fantastic debut that has aged rather well for just how old it is. Probably one of my favorite renditions of Blue Moon ever (Take 9/M version). Absolutely beautiful. Can't believe he was only19 when he recorded that track.

Comme je vous l'expliquais dans ma critique de Kraftwerk il y a de cela quelques mois, j'ai pour habitude de sortir avec les anciennes fréquentations de mon compère d'écoute et ennemi juré eltrapeze. Après leur avoir fait passer à chacune un entretien virtuel, j'annonçai à l'une d'elles qu'elle avait été choisie pour me rejoindre en Basse-Saxe et ainsi pouvoir sortir avec moi, Robvestiaire. eltrapeze étant interdit de séjour dans cette région, elle n'avait absolument rien à craindre. Celle-ci prit son billet et me rejoignit dans le nord de l'Allemagne. À son arrivée, nous nous rendîmes à l'hôtel. Une fois la porte de notre chambre franchie, elle me déshabilla, me jeta sur le lit et m'embrassa de la manière la plus sauvage qui soit tout en proférant des propos injurieux à l'égard d'eltrapeze. « Attends, je vais mettre de la musique. » l'interrompis-je soudain. Je me levai, connectai mon enceinte JBL à mon portable, cliquai sur l'album Elvis Presley, et la posai sur la table située au bord de la fenêtre. Croyez-le ou non, au moment où je regagnai le lit, l'album était déjà terminé. Je décidai de me rhabiller et de raccompagner cette demoiselle à la gare.

Ce matin, je lançais cet album au moment de me préparer un bon thé matinal. Alors que ma tasse était à moitié remplie d'eau bouillante, Elvis s'arrêta soudain de chanter. Je me demandais ce qu'il pouvait bien se passer. "Peut-être un problème de connexion" soupirais-je. Je dévérouillais alors mon téléphone pour vérifier la qualité du signal wi-fi, mais la connextion semblait impeccable. I remember enjoying Elvis Presley's songs during my explore-music-through-youtube phase. I liked almost every song from his compilation album, "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits". My general thought about his music as a whole is that the songs usually lie somewhere between ballad and rock-'n'-roll. The closer it is to ballad, the better. I know he's the King of Rock-'n'-roll, but his voice sounds like a wood being sawed when he's singing rock songs. Sorry. When I received his self-titled debut, I expected to hear at least one of the tracks from "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits", perhaps at least "Heartbreak Hotel", one of my favorite Elvis songs. But there is none, because to quote Wikipedia: "In the 1950s, general practice dictated tracks having greater commercial potential to be released as singles, with tracks of lesser appeal placed on albums." And that's probably why this album is such a letdown personally. It felt dull, especially when compared to his other songs. And weirdly, I enjoyed the rockabilly songs more than the ballad ones. Not even the fan beloved "Blue Moon" impressed me. But perhaps it's because the songs here have the minimal production that is observed in "Heartbreak Hotel". But I guess this album is still important for bringing rock-'n'-roll into the mainstream. He covered those rock-'n'-roll songs from people of color so kids who listen to it don't have to lie to their parents that they're listening to a white singer. Perhaps he's definitely the King of Rock-'n'-roll for bringing the genre into the forefront of the music scene. Whether these covers are great is probably a matter of debate. I'm particularly familiar with Little Richard's bluesy banger, "Tutti Frutti". And Presley's cover of it is surprisingly dull, lacking the energy of the original. Overall, influential but not that great.

I enjoy listening to Elvis for the historical angle but it is still enjoyable enough on its own.

Classic album from Elvis in the early, early days of rock and roll. Tight, energetic and fun to listen to. His covers really don't touch the originals most of the time, but they don't need to. His charisma, his resonant, heartfelt vocal style, his raw talent. 66 years later, and the music still speaks for itself. This is a 3.5 album that I choose to round up because it is Elvis!

This is incredible for the debut album that popularized rock n roll. There's only like two tracks ("I'm Counting on You" and "Just Because") that I really don't like. All the other tracks are solid. There's a fair mix of rock n roll and traditional pop songs. It's like a school dance, going back and forth between upbeat and slow dances, but I wish they didn't change every two or three songs. You can hear the country influences in songs like "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry," reminding me country used to actually be good in the 50s and 60s. Strange highlight for me is "Blue Moon," my favorite track but also a very usual ballad. There's intense energy in the covers "Blue Suede Shoes," "Tutti Frutti," and "Money Honey," and of course with his signature vocals, they really do give the most popular versions (Perkins, Little Richard) a run for their money. Probably my favorite Elvis album, and it's not just for the mass influence on rock music. Favorites: Blue Moon, I'll Never Let You Go, Blue Suede Shoes, I Got a Woman, I Love You Because

Still, I think it's a great record and a fun spin.

La cosa es que hay tantísimo material de Elvis que cada disco tiene algo bueno que sacarle y este no es la excepción. Especialmente para ser el primero, de 1956, este disco tiene un par de joyas. Blue Suede Shoes es la rola que define al Elvis rockanrolero (separado del Elvis Contry y el Elvis romántico) con esa forma de cantar como con pequeños e intencionales gallos que se vuelven icónicos. Blue Moon es también una excelente rola que se vuelve la firma de lo que es cantarle a una enamorada. Por otro lado, aunque el disco es cortito, también tiene un par de cosas que no brillan igual, como I Love You Because y I'll Never Let You Go.

Classic Elvis at his early best, I really am impressed with the quality here and justifiably on the list. Great record that, like the Beatles, changed the whole music scene. "Blue Suede Shoes" & "Tutti Frutti" stand out tracks and also Ray Charles's "I Got A Woman" but the sheer musicianship of the bands he worked with stand out. I would definitely have it in my collection. Although I prefer the Clash's 1979 Pastiche cover for London Calling (Which is in my collection)

The King's début! It's an artifact as much as entertainment. And it is entertaining. The intro to Blue Suede Shoes is maybe one of my favorite album openers, ever. Love this song. "One-Sided Love Affair" is a new favorite. "Tutti Fruitti" is an old favorite. It's true that part of my love for this album is as a historical document, but I do love this music!

I am a fan of Elvis, but I was surprised that I enjoyed this album as much as I did. I guess I didn't expect it to have a good of sound quality and energy. It was great!

How odd to simply listen to an Elvis album. These songs and this sound has been so ubiquitous that it's hard to imagine a time before they existed. This was great. I'm so impressed with the musicianship and the marriage of blues and country. Very enjoyable.

Having listened to Elvis Presley my entire life, I wasn’t expecting any really new insights. Oops - turns out that a lifetime of listening to greatest hits collections denied me some of the excitement of early Elvis. Elvis recorded this between the ages of 19 - 21 and it is remarkable how polished his sound is. While there are a range of song styles Elvis transcends genre and brings it all together. He makes every song his own. A few interesting moments: “One-Sided Love Affair” I really enjoyed! I don’t recall hearing this song before, but his delivery is great. “Just Because” stood out to me. I don’t recall hearing this before. Love the guitar in this one. Elvis’ singing in “Trying to Get to You” is particularly good. “Blue Moon” is so pared back and haunting. A bit unusual and really showcases Elvis’ vocal skills. I did not expect to love this song but it is one of my favorites on the album. I initially thought it might be tough to drop in and rate the first album of an artist so ubiquitous as Elvis, but listening to this album felt surprisingly fresh. For a few moments I could feel the excitement of listening to Elvis for the first time. That cleared up any doubt that this deserves a 5.

Let's first acknowledge the African American songwriters and performers who originally wrote many of the tracks on this album. Elvis - he's cool but he's also a bit of a dick in that rock n roll way. This album is full of swagger, a very self-assured debut. The track that surprised me the most was his version of "Blue Moon". It's weird and haunting. If that were to show up on the Spotify EP of a contemporary bedroom R&B artist, it would be cool. But Elvis was doing that 75 years ago. Young Elvis was also absolutely bringing it with the LP cover design, his name in pink.

I absolutely loved listening to Elvis, especially knowing that this was during his most hopeful times. There's a bittersweetness that will always be a part of the Elvis listening experience. And, that version of blue moon!

I really enjoyed listening to this! I love ‘I got a Woman’- great track. It does get the hips moving- even on a Sunday morning! You can imagine that this must have been scandalous for fifties ‘dads’ whose teenage daughters were listening to it!

Some undisputed classics, but Elvis isn’t for me.

So funny that this music was completely scandalous when it came out. I find that I like the ballads more than the rock n roll numbers.

I am sure it was a great album at the time and that a lot of artists covered each other at the time but I just couldn't get into the "I got a Woman" or especially the "Tutti Fruiti" covers. The rest of the songs were just okay for me but I do love "Blue Suede shoes" and "Blue Moon" as singles.

2.8 - solid album. Can hear why it’s influential, but not something that really sticks out to me, especially for the time. Very vocal heavy. My favorite songs on the album were probably the ones I was most familiar with from other artists (e.g. I Got a Woman).

It's ok, I guess. You probably needed to be around when it was released to really appreciate it. Sure, he created the cliches, but they're still cliches.

Didn’t finish, reminds me of Abby

I knew a lot of these tracks going in, and I'd like to know more about the originals, just to breath a different sort of life into them. But Elvis does good here.

Hi: I Love You Because, Just Because, Blue Moon Lo: None It's amazing how Elvis hit the ground running with this debut album; Every vocal is buttery smooth, every plunk of the piano deliberate, every strum of the guitar purposeful. Yet parents at the time hated it, thinking that the inevitable hip-swinging would bring about an immoral apocalypse of promiscuity. 65 years later, Elvis just sounds quant and wholesome enough to play in nurseries and Sunday school. Does it hold up? If you peel away all the influences and echos in today's music, this is the framework that would be left, and who knows what rock n' roll would look like today if this album had never existed.

I just never got into Elvis. He's the Don Corleone of rock music: he's the original, but his biggest fans have ended up making it so that Elvis became a parody of himself.

Thought I would like this more than I did. Blue Suede Shoes was the only song I really liked. The rest was ok but not my favorite Presley stuff.

Classic 50's rock, very recognizable that it's Elvis even on songs I hadn't heard before. Can definitely see how this sparked such a movement in music

Some good tunes I've never given a serious listen to, though also a fair few songs that aren't to my tastes. I never knew I've Got A Woman in the Kanye West song came from Elvis! Will try to listen to this again.

I would have never suspected the debut album of the man that rocked the world to be this tame. This album has both some true rock'n'roll classics as well as some slower ballads. Pretty good but not as good as some other R'n'R artists Elvis "borrowed" from.
