Reviews (page 12 of 13)
I'm a fan of Elvis , have been since I was a kid in the 70s. I understand why this is an important album but listening to it now it's hard to understand why Elvis became the superstar that he was. Blue Suede Shoes is a great first track but after that it's just a lot of bad covers of songs that had been done much better by other artists. This hasn't aged well.
Try as I might, I simply cannot get into or appreciate Elvis Presley. I've never fully gotten the appeal. I understand his importance to rock history...but weren't there like tons of other, better and more original artists out there?
Elvis is a legend but this album doesn’t really have any of my favorite songs of his and doesn’t flow very well.
Didn’t really do much for me. Blue moon is the one here for me. It’s a little haunting and spooky and chill too.
Undeniably a highly influential album in the history of rock 'n' roll and popular music. Elvis presents in his debut album a mosaic of rockabilly, rhythm and blues, and pop. His voice is not yet fully mature, but I think it fits with his unrefined, short tunes intended for a young audience. His characteristic halting, erratic vocal inflection is most exaggerated on One-Sided Love Affair, and I had to skip that track on my second listen—to me, it's just annoying. The circumstances of this release were the perfect storm: a generation of youths with more free time than ever, ripe to be the first "teenagers" with a shared youth culture; and the rise of television, among other things. Elvis likely could have been replaced with another handsome white boy that could sing and was willing to look a little silly on stage, and they would've done well. All that said, I can appreciate the floodgates that were opened by Elvis for the wider adoption of historically Black musical idioms into the popular culture. I'd choose almost anything else to listen to over Elvis, influential though he may be.
Nope. 2/5
Not fussed. 2/5
There’s maybe two songs I actually like and the rest I’ll live without ever hearing again.
It was fine.
I like some of this, and can hear how it’s permeated some of my favourite music. I’m not fussed on a fair bit of it though and i’m yet to properly learn about Elvis and his cultural impact, as well as the more modern discussion of Elvis as either a representative of a deeply racist system or/and a bridge between musical cultures. This would be a light 3, but I deduct 1 for these not being his own songs. ⭐️⭐️
Talentless chancer with a penchant for hamburgers and 14 year old girls releases collection of other people's songs and covers and inadvertently helps kick off rock and roll as well as a stream of fat Elvis impersonators and wedding chapels. The king? Fuck off. Alvin Stardust, Stray Cats and Mrs Mills did a better job.
Nothing interesting about this album.
Really interesting contrast, listening to this next to Sinatra‘s Songs for Swingin’ Lovers which came out the same year. I understand how groundbreaking and popular Elvis was, but I just don’t like his style. It comes across very forced and cheesy. He was meant to be experienced live because he was an electric performer, but The music in my opinion doesn’t stand solidly on its own.
Meh. I appreciate the music and transition it ushered in, but not my thing.
This album exemplifies why I didn't really like Elvis until I found the Sun Sessions. His older rockabilly stuff was great, and there's traces of that here, but it's mostly the softer ballads that emphasise his voice over the music. And I can't really be doing with that.
Just not a fan of that voice. Respect it but didn't like it.
Deus que bagulho sem sal
More historically important than it is a good record. Elvis's vocals are obviously great and full of charisma, but the songs themselves are just basically the same old 12-bar blues thing over bad over again. There are classic tracks here, of course, but we wouldn't lose out on not hearing every single one of them. Key tracks: Blue Suede Shoes
okay
Not a fan of Elvis
Not exactly the best Elvis album. Really just a glorified covers record. The soulfulness is definitely on display and his takes on the songs seem genuine rather than trying to rip them off and make them entirely his own, but it just doesn’t do a whole lot for me. Elvis is more of a greatest hits type of artist and trying to listen to full albums of his music can be grueling.
come on.
it was important, just not to me.
no mater how iconic .. just not my thing . 2
High 2 Would have love more song like Tuttit frutti and blue suede. Less "velvet ballads" An album that didnt age well, not because its bad but because rock n roll has evolve so much since that
Ehhhhh
Amazing that he recorded this without ever meeting a Black person
All of the genuinely acceptable tracks are on the latter half of the record - v much a product of its time and it feels like his whole Elvussy went into his later work. Credit where credit is due, he did sound nice when he kept in his lower register.
Rating is how much I enjoy it, not its influence or relevance.
Yeah I really just don't enjoy this
Love blue moon and I’ll never let you go. The rest is not my favorite, maybe another listen
It's fine I guess, but the whole time I was listening to it, I was just thinking how there is so much better rock music from around the same time. Doesn't have the songs I like from him, and a lot of his vocal affectations kinda annoy me/are all over the place. It's like there's three different singers on the record, and they don't really mesh. Was hoping for some good Fallout-core and unfortunately did not get it, haha (Although Fallout music is more 40's, but still).
Enjoyable but bland.
Elvis has a great voice, but he always sounds like he’s overdoing it. Beyond that, the album is pretty standard for the time period and takes a lot of inspiration from Little Richard (including a Tutti Frutti cover), so it’s unsurprising that I’m not a big fan.
For a debut album, I can undoubtedly see how this could have taken the world over by storm when this came out. Especially starting off with Blue Suede Shoes, which is a song I fairly enjoy. However, for casual listening these days, it's not very entertaining in my opinion. The audio quality is very dated and the music is pretty basic. Great for some, not for me though.
di bello c’è solo la copertina
FUCK Elvis. Only good song is Blue Suede Shoes. Not because of Elvis. But because the song is a great song. The rest are trash covers.
It was alright. Seems historically important/astonishing.
Worthwhile to listen through once because I'd never hear a song of his that he's not singing in his signature voice. But that's about it, if I'm listening to 50s rock I want to listen to someone else.
Eh
It’s Elvis. I wouldn’t listen to again but found myself unconsciously tapping along.
A decent classic.
I know, Elvis transformed the music of the time and is "the King". Alas, I didn't live through it and will never truly understand it his popularity or the ensuing craze of the time. Thanks for starting something that others could build on! Not really interested in spending more time with this album.
While I can appreciate the history and the influence.. I just don’t really like to listen to it. 🤷🏻♂️
I get he inspired a generation but this was just dull apart from Blue Suede Shoes.
Elvis was a classic but I’m not a huge fan
Kinda meh! Recording quality makes the sound very shrill. Like, I get that he was big in his time, but this really doesn't grab me. I can hear the impact and references of this album in contemporary music though, so it is undoubtably very influential.
Elvis - konungur tveggjastjörndómanna. Mikið fór rokki fram á sjöundatugnum.
Elvis is a consistently meh artist for me.
Clearly a classic and important and such but so many of the tracks on it I much prefer other versions like Ray Charles' I Got A Woman or Little Richard's Tutti Frutti. Elvis versions all just seems so flat. I think I like him best when his vocal style really comes out.
he’s hwhite. not bad. but also not jamming with anything other than blue suede shoes.
The upbeat songs were enjoyable, but the ballads really dragged this out. Which is hard to do on an album that's less than 30 minutes.
The skeet of lil bill in which he says Presley would have fucked his own mom if given the chance will stay in my head more often than this album. No, seriously, there's some nice songs but I really don't see what is special with this one.
Didn’t enjoy
all 12 bar basically. Not much variety
Not a fan of this one, but I don’t typically enjoy anything pre-70s so it checks out.
catchy thievery
I guess I like Elvis in small doses. Some decent tracks on here.
Not sure why, I was expecting more. 4/10
2.18
Your grandma probably thinks this guy’s the GOAT because he sang songs written and performed better by black people. Your grandma sucks.
Meh
Classic Rock'n'Roll, by the numbers, without much variation. Elvis was a trendsetter for audiences in the '50s. To me it's just same old, same old, desperately in need of songs to match his talent. 2/5
One killer (Blue suede shoes), the rest are fillers. Certainly his fame wasn’t founded in the lp era.
IMO, Elvis is overrated and his music is boring.
I’ve always enjoyed Elvis - mostly the phenomenon surrounding his popularity. This album is mediocre at best, but it drove the masses wild.
yeah it's alright. not an Elvis fan, but still listenable. won't be playing it again, but it was nice to go through one of the most recognized artists atleast once. honestly, going through the whole album, i didn't feel the need to skip any songs.
He's white?
65% Best: Blue Suede Shoes Must-Hear? No. Elvis is overrated AF
Really not aged that well tbh. Ive had some later Elvis albums on here and strongly disliked them. But this isn't much better. One sided Love Affair sounded like someone taking the piss out of Elvis. The slow songs were bad. Blue Suede Shoes was the pinnacle of the album so it was pretty much over 2 minutes in. Another 26 minutes of getting through it. Also, why did he feel the need to butcher Tutti Frutti? Mad choice. 1.5*
“When are they gonna get to the fireworks factory?!” The Album.
2/10 Maybe with time this album could grow on me but for now im rating it a 2
Trying to leave the racial implications aside... This is still not good. None of the songs are his. I only liked Blue Suede Shoes and I still prefer the original Carl Perkins version. Elvis was a product that benefited from other artist's work. If not for that song I would consider giving this a 1.
Am I the only one that doesn’t like Elvis’ voice? Didn’t enjoy it at all.
Giving an additional point for historical significance, but there's nothing Elvis was doing here that others weren't doing better (Little Richard's version of Tutti Frutti is superior), and some of these songs are terrible (One Sided Love Affair).
Not really my bag. I like some of Elvis’ stuff but it’s difficult to put the music era into perspective. It’s like a very rough version of early Beatles
I am not really an Elvis fan.
The cover might look like he's singing. He's yawning A few days ago I couldn't finish the first song. Demoralizing
Alright, not his best album nor really my cup of tea 4/10
this album was alright. i felt like it showcased levi’s’ talent more than anything. didn’t like the beats or the repetitive lyrics but i can appreciate the talent and how beautiful his voice is.
Yawn soz
I found this very mind-numbing, it was like he recorded as many songs as he could just to see what would stick… it worked tho ofc he got Blue suede shoes out of it Standout tracks: - Blue suede shoes - Trying to get to you - Blue moon
It's a fine early Elvis offering. Of course there's plenty of the typical-of-the-time white guy doing black music in a less impressive way, and this is far from Elvis at his most mature vocal work. There is much better Elvis music out there.
giving it two stars only because i recognize that it has to have some appeal bc its elvis favorite tracks: Blue Moon? idk
Some old school vibes. I'd heard most of these songs as singles over the years so it was cool to listen to the whole album. Not exactly my cup of team but a cool moment in time
Not the biggest Elvis fan, and this didn't sway me. I think maybe this era of music is lost on me.
First song is the only good song
Despite his magnitude and perhaps being one of the most famous musical artists that has ever lived I must confess that I dislike Elvis with a passion. How can this be I ask? My elder brother played his records so my early years were filled with his music but it appears made no connection with me at all. My earliest musical foundation can be traced to Cliff Richard (Bachelor Boy my first single) who was often compared to Elvis and has his English version. I don’t think that this registered with me and if there was ever an Elvis v Cliff thing. In any case this was only my one foray into the Cliff camp (although I do like his Christmas songs) so I don’t think my Elvis hatred stemmed from that. I was soon into The Beatles and early English 60’s groups. And whilst my musical heroes lauded Elvis has their inspiration I just dismissed this and considered Elvis from a previous generation and not for me. Nowerdays I can listen to artists who were about during the 50’s and can actually enjoy their music and see their value. But unfortunately this does not extend to anything Elvis has ever produced. This could be considered as heretical and I get that. I wish that I could say there was at least one Elvis song I liked but honestly can’t. This album in my estimation is a 1/5 but this is based on my own prejudices and Elvis, whatever I think of him, does not deserve that. 2/5 23/9/24
some of the least elvisy elvis ever, surprisingly varied for a 50s rock and roll album.
I'm so sick of this man!! I have a long familial problem with Elvis Presley! My aunt and mother warred over buying his records or other records as a child and it poisoned us all! That weird Blue Moon version gets 1 additional star for being weird (positive)
boring!
Elvis Presley , ah what can be said The cover art is iconic and love that the The Clash used it for “London Calling” “Blue Suede Shoes” is classic Rock’n’Roll The 4th track “One Sided Love Affair” is pretty decent ,though the “Elvisisms” get a bit much “I LOVE YOU BECAUSE” is plain awful. The beginning whistle , the crooning, and high pitch Elvis parts are so annoying. He annunciates words weird and elongates them to make those young girls Swoon. The lyric “I Love You Because Your YOU” is what most boy bands would base their whole careers off of. “Just Because” is the better of the Because songs, but that’s not saying much “Tutti Fruitti” is a good song. It’s another classic, might just be a tad better by on of the songwriters (LR) I think the next great moment is “Blue Moon”. Though this song has been done better by other artists and production here is pretty sparse ( side Note His falsetto makes Tiny Tim look good) In the end I went into this a not an Elvis Presley Fan, and can’t say The King swayed me. Overall I prefer most other 50’s Rock’N’Rollers (Buddy Holly (my favourite), Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Chubby Checker etc etc) I understand the importance of this album for influencing many artists. It really was a starting point for many to jump into the genre. However this just isn’t a great “album” by today standards. It isn’t even a good album by what it would truly mean 10 years later. He still is THE KING , just not one I think has all that much royalty 2/5 (1 by my standard, giving it a 2 for historical reasons) 1* - Not Good 2* - Has Merit 3* - Would listen Again (Good) 4* - Like It/Love it 5* - Love It & is A Classic album
An important debut obviously, but the vocal performances are the only thing impressive here. Elvis showcases his talent on some simple (and boring) Rock & Roll tunes. Sounds samey the whole way through and even features a few covers on it to boot. Doesn't help that the recording quality is pretty bad on a few of the tracks as well.
Not really my preferred style of music but interesting to listen to it through the lense of "this was revolutionary back in the day"
I really understand his influence and his immense impact on the entire world but to me I didn’t totally see the spark. And yes i know I am saying that because i have access to all the music he influenced and I am bigger fan of that, so I do recognize that. However just really not a huge fan!
Honestly, not impressed with this album. Feels a tad racist. His voice, while iconic, does a little too much every once in a while. Elvis is talented, and you can hear it, but this isn't a great showcase of his talent. It's a fun album, but it's not particularly good. Favorite Song(s): Blue Suede Shoes
Except for the hits I know and love this isn't all that great
‘Seinfeld isn’t funny’ syndrome
boring elvis shit tbh
It is impossible to downplay the importance of this record in the annuls of music. There are people out there who fell in love to this record. I am not one of them. But I certainly appreciate it.
Classic album cover, lionized by The Clash's London Calling. This was made before albums were really a "thing" yet, and this was definitely not recorded as an album. More likely a combination of all the tapes they could find to capitalize on Elvis's early success. I never liked his warbling vibrato and by my time all of the original versions of tunes he made famous were readily available and generally preferable. There's nothing about listening to this now that is changing my perspective. My favorite aspect of this album is its brevity. And some of the guitar playing (Some. If that's Scotty Moore on Blue Suede Shoes, it's his worst work I've heard. Can't seem to keep up with the tempo!). I think you had to be there. I grew up mainly after he died and I and my friends knew Elvis mainly as the image of celebrity excess and a cautionary tale told by a huge velvet painting of a late period bloated Elvis stuffed into an Evil Knievel wannabe jumpsuit with a tear streaking down his cheek hanging over our favorite booth at Mama's Pizza. There was a kid in my 1980s high school who would wear a t-shirt with the cover of that "50,000,000 Elvis fans can't be wrong" album on it and whenever I would walk by him in the hallway I would obnoxiously yell at him "yes, they can!" In retrospect I am surprised no '80s hardcore band swapped Hitler into that image. Missed opportunity.
King of Rock and Roll my arse.
Never been a fan. It has some history vut apart from a couple of tracks not great
Blue Suede Shoes is the only good track on this thing. It's only Elvis' first album, so it can be forgiven for not being Peak Elvis, but when you consider everything Elvis would become, its obvious weaknesses are very apparent: flat singing, poor instrumentation and a general lack of personality.
I'll admit I'm not the biggest fan of Elvis in general. I think he's terribly overrated and is more a product of being in the right place at the right time more than anything else. As exhibited on this album, he has some talent don't get me wrong. Rock and roll in the 50s had a very distinct cadence and structure, and by and large, Presley seldom deviates from that formula. In my opinion, that repetitiveness is not conducive to longer listening sessions. There is not much to take away on this album for me, and there were a couple tracks that had me almost bored to sleep. Overall, Elvis remains under the "not for me" umbrella. Notable Tracks: - Blue Suede Shoes 3/10
I mean after Blue Suede Shoes we're left with a bunch of covers that feel pretty unremarkable. Most of which I don't know the originals so can't pass comment, but the ones I do, are far superior. Blue Suede Shoes is probably above this problem as Elvis's version is so well known. Also it's not mildly tainted I guess because you can't say that one was whitewashed being it was wrote by Carl Perkins. Strange not to include Heartbreak Hotel as well since this also bucks the trend. Tutti Frutti and I Got a Woman though, get out of here. And Blue Moon is just weird, it feels like everyone involved in recording it is falling asleep.
I respect Elvis for his massive once in a generation influence for bringing rock and blues to the white masses. Dad loved him. Am I Elvis or Beatles fan? Alway Rolling Stones. To me this would be like some white guy covering Prince or James Brown.
Uh huh huh! Blue Suede Shoes is the only good track here, the rest are just a bit naff
I get all the stuff about Elvis' influence and all that but it's just not very good is it?
Nej. Inte bra. Plojig musik.
Tycker Elvis är helt okej, även om det inte är något jag slänger på till vardags direkt. Gillade den förra skivan mer än denna dock.
I don't mind Elvis to an extent, but this contained none of his better songs. Not it.
The king! Haven't ever listened to any of his albums before just songs here and there. I understand the impact he had on music and culture back then but the music is really just ok. He did bring us fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches though so there is that.
Not a very compelling album from the king of rock in my opinion. The opening track Blue Suede Shoes might be the most memorable and typical Elvis. But even that song starts to feel repetitive by its end. Some of the songs on the back end, I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin) and Blue Moon - Take 9/M are really slow and boring. Wanted to like this one more than I did.
1. zhoez - 1.5 2. counting - 1 3. uuoman - 1 4. love affair - 0 5. becauze - 1.5 6. juzt - 1 7. fruti - 1 8. trying - 1 9. cry - 1 10. go - 1.5 11. blue moon - 1 12. honey - 1
My first Elvis album! Honestly? I don't get the hype around his "Elvis twang". It just sounds so mumbled and off putting. Another thing is that I was surprised he didn't have the twang for every song. He sounds completely different without it! The songs just aren't very good at all unfortunately.
I listened to Blue Suede Shoes, and it sounded a little hollow, so I listened to Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins' version right after. And then Folsom Blues. What a song! Can't wait to listen to the whole album. Where was I? Right, Elvis. Probably a really relevant album and so on, but most of the songs are rather cringy or bland, or both... Tutti Frutti comes along and feels anemic. So I immediately listen to Little Richard's version. What a classic! I get it, Elvis laid the groundwork for Rock and Roll's success. This is album the foundation upon which other people built castles. But only nerds visit a castle and are interested in its foundation.
At least each song was short. Most of Elvis's work sounds to me like a soulless cash grab, and this is no exception.
Not great. Sounds like a novelty album to me. The greatest hits albums worked much better. The version of Blue Moon is excellent though.
I think for every fast there was a slow song and that was nice for a change but I also feel like as an adult I realize how much Elvis used black music to make it and I’m not sure how much he gave back to that community in return. I will need to look that up but this also wasn’t my favorite in terms of his music overall anyway.
I’ve been a low level Elvis Hater for a while, but now have some time for the later live recordings. So coming into this one, I had a more open mind than I might have a couple years ago. This is good when it’s good, but man for a 28 minute album there is a lot of filler here. Elvis is not my King.
Overrated. Didn't even write his own songs. 2.2/5
Between 2 or 3 here…. It was ok, obviously influential and I liked more of the ballad-y songs, the ones that were more Roy Orbison… the whole thing has a real Hayes Code horniness to it. Glad it was short!
Some cute songs!
Boring. I don't get Elvis.
It was interesting hearing Elivs not sound "Elvisy" on some songs. Tutti Frutti by anyone other than Little Richard is just wrong. It's not a genre I normally listen to but I like the boogie piano style. I wouldn't listen to this album again though.
Okay... I've hated Elvis all of my life. Public Enemy didn't help with my anti-Elvis world view. I've recently softened a bit considering his influence on other acts such as the Beatles. Still not my thing.
Eh
It's classic, but I haven't enjoyed this music for a long time.
In 1989, I saw Elvis walk out of the gas station of the rest area Taunusblick-Eschborn, A5 near Frankfurt. When he spotted me recognising him, he did his little a-bop-bop-a-loom and told me we should all move on. He seemed nice.
It's Elvis. I'm sure it was groundbreaking and new at the time but it's never been for me. I'm just not a big fan of Elvis's vocals but you do have to appreciate the new sound and pioneering an upbeat country/rock and roll sound. 5/10 (2.5/5)
2 stars because at least it was short, and inoffensive. impossible to listen to without considering how he was just copying much better black artists.
Meh
Not really my thing, but acknowledge the ground breaking impact he had on RnR
Almost 70 years later, there has been a movement to redefining how Elvis has done nothing but stolen black artists music. White washing the soul of the music. But, the historical significance of influence in this album is palpable. Leading to the music of 70s and 80s, where my earlier musical favourites exist. Sometimes it is the lowest denominator that survives the test of time. But, one can find a tiny shade of his greatness hidden in these songs.
I guess you had to be there.
90% of this passed me by. Nothing really happens, it’s just there. Couple of decent little bits, quite like the guitar on ‘Just Because’, and Blue Suede Shoes is decent. Can appreciate this mustve sounded like the future in 56 but I’m glad it wasn’t. 1.5
Elvis' persona and the rock and roll thing must have been completely revolutionary because otherwise it feels like a huge practical joke that I'm not in on. He can't sing anything that isnt a proper crooner, and even then he's not great. It feels like a parody of Elvis most of the time, until you remember that's what Elvis sounds like. And he's singing a load of songs they have been done loads better by other people! I think blue suede shoes is okay and there's enough about it to get through one listen but it's really bad. 1.5.
I don't really get it either. Blue Suede Shoes is decent.
This was okay, I liked parts of it but he can barely sing. The originals tracks are far superior to anything Elvis covered on this album. This is especially evident on "I Got a Woman" where Elvis sounds out of breath most of the time. The original by Ray Charles is better in every regard. Highlights: Blue Suede Shoes One-Sided Love Affair
Better than the last Elvis album we had, but still not great. I thought there would be much more up tempo tracks like blue suede shoes, but most is quite downbeat really. Still don't think you're for me Elvis. 2.5
ну не понять мне это, видимо видеть надо в репрессии
I can see why people back in the liked Elvis, but its not for me
Didn't like this one as much as Live from Memphis. He's not at full strength yet, as you should expect from a debut album. Wonder what happened to him.
I was never an Elvis fan but I appreciate his brilliance. 2
I watched that movie Priscilla and now I have no choice but to hate Elvis :( His music is not too bad though, just old
So, I know Elvis Presley is... well, Elvis, right? He's called 'The King' for a reason. Problem is that the King is dead, and this album, while probably a perfect fit for its time, is nearly twice as old as I am. I've listened to it so I can cross it off the list, but I won't be going back to it.
Rip off artist Elvis has ironically been ripped off to the point where his music is no longer interesting. Especially 70 years later...
Kinda snoozeville and sounds different in every son
He was never a favorite but I did enjoy the album. A lovely voice but his choices ran a bit maudlin for my taste.
If there is an artist people give a lot of credit to that I could probably do with a lot less of in my life, it would be Elvis. If I never heard Elvis again for the rest of my life, I would not be complaining. I just don’t get it. People listen to Elvis in the 21st century, unironically? People are allowed to enjoy whatever they want, but those who live and breathe Elvis just confuse me. This happens to be within the top 5 oldest albums on the list. And this proves to me that the 50s were by no means a strong decade for music. Especially not in comparison to the stuff we would get only a decade or so later. This OG rock & roll genre just sounds like white people trying to jack all of the ideas that the African Americans came up with during the 20s and 30s. When they eventually ditched the roll part is when rock started to really evolve. Elvis is just the poster boy of this era. And I simply don’t like him, or his music. I find it to be very plain and uninspired. And it feels rather pointless when considering the heights that other artists were reaching even in the same year. I know people who love his music. And I’m sure they probably grew up around those who listened to it themselves as a kid, and also grew up around Elvis fans, and so on. My opinion is not going to change how eternal this man is as an icon. But that doesn’t mean I’m forcing myself to like his music. The best thing that came out of this is London Calling’s album cover. Rating: 4/10
THIS is your king?!?? ...Sus Black people made much better blues / rock n roll in the 1950s. Yet this cringe white dude gets title "king" of rock n roll... Curious. Something something overthrow the monarchy something something no gods no masters
Can appreciate the breath of fresh air he likely offered at the time, but his style of music is not for me.
I liked the uptempo songs. Blue Suede Shoes is an all time classic. Otherwise, not for me.
It's hard to hear these songs and not imagine them being sung by an impersonator.
London calling
I mean it's mostly just a bunch of covers of other peoples music. I have trouble seeing how this would've been popular if the original artist weren't black and therefor not regarded as "good". Anyway, the country songs and ballads are better. His voice is undeniably powerful. Still I think there is so much better stuff out there. Blue Suede Shoes is a classic though. Strong 2.
A couple memorable songs...but that's all they are. Did not do it for me.
There is some great rock-a-billy on here, and plenty of tracks to remind me why I was never a fan. I like some songs - this version of Blue Suede Shoes, for example.
Only 28 minutes long, but I would cut 26 of them. Blue Suede Shoes comes out of the block strongly, but after that I was amazed how twee it all sounded. I've Got A Woman was especially watered down. The 'Elvis made black music accessible to easily frightened white folk' is an old trope, but listening to this album it's difficult to see it as anything but a cynical money grab. Elvis is in there trying to get out, but he's being compromised from the start.
This album is historically relevant, but I can't find a good reason to listen to Elvis in 2024.
Probably pretty good for it's time but honestly just too old for my taste.
meh

Never was a fan. This just reminded me of that personal fact.
Better than previous elvis album, but still not my thing. 2.5
Presley.
A record that has to be on this list, because of how important it is, but as a record isnt especially good. The singles are fun, but the rest is weak material, especially compare to what came later in Elvis career.
I like Elvis. He has a phenomenal voice and his presence is undeniable. This album is Blue Suede Shoes and then a bunch of B sides at best. Definitely not required listening
I listened to this twice in a row and couldn’t even tell since all the songs sound the same
Gave the album a listen and it just isn't the type of music I dig. It's a little bit too old school and outdated for me.
Not an Elvis fan affects my rating
I thought this would have more wow factor, but of course it's not 1956 any more. It must have been so impactful then, but I just found it OK. Sorry, Sun Studios/RCA.
Nice enough. Is all I have to say about it.
I think, for me, Elvis has always suffered from being so popular with the generation before mine. Therefore very much not cool. By the time I was even aware of music, he was seeing out his time in Vegas and then dead. I tried to be receptive but it just feels very samey. At least it’s brief. Much prefer the Ray Charles version of I Got a Woman.
I didn´t expect to get an Elvis album. It sounded like the 50s and I would not listen to it again even though I like Elvis
Not a fan of Presley. He's a talented performer, but none of these songs are his own.
I respect Elvis, but not a fan 2.5
did not enjoy that much. i liked blue suede shoes, blue moon and trying to get you.
En pysty oikein ottaa Elviksen ääntä tässä tosissaan. Kappaleetkaan ei niin hyviä. Blue Moon hyvä mutta oliko tää joku demo versio?
It was interesting to listen just because of the historical significance of this being Elvis's first studio album. I don't know why, but I always have an issue with people who get famous for singing other people's songs. Everyone loves Elvis, but he really had no involvement in what songs he sang or which ones became hits. Very much like Britney Spears. But she had tits.
elvis presley more like pedo presley
Great cover album, a little white though...
Look, I know he's iconic and whatnot, but it's just not my thing.
Meh. Pretty boring overall Standout songs: Just because Money Honey
OK, some hits. White boy got rock n roll.
I like the hits, not a big fan of the deeper tracks. 2/5
Best Songs: N/A Listen Again: No
This guy really loved his blue suede shoes. I was born a few years after this album was released. I know many of his songs, but it was interesting hearing the range of styles on this album.
Much like Jerry Lee Lewis, the cloud of "white man popularising the black man's music" hangs heavy here. Classic rock & roll, albeit distilled.
Elvis was a nonce
Pari tuttua klassikkoa herätti nostalgiaa ja muistoja 50-luvulta, mutta ei
Toiset biisit on todella kotikutoisen kuuloisia. Ja ne paremmatkin on kyllä tosi vanhahtavia. Vaikea uskoa että tästä enää innostuu kukaan sellainen, joka ei ole kuullut tätä silloin kun rock oli uusi juttu.
Not an early rock fan - much sameness here. Quick and to the point
Just OK
Not good.
Do you like Elvis? Do you like bad cover versions of songs by black people sung by a white person? Do you like songs recorded on a potato? Boy, do I have an album for you! I don't like any of these things, so this is barely tolerable to me.
Guter Opener, danach kaum auszuhaltender cheesy cringe
Elvis is just a bit shit
Presley not my vibe
Блять, не только песни спиздил, но и обложку у Clash 4/10
Forgetting the significance of Elvis and the legacy he left on rock n roll music - this is incredibly boring. Just how riding around in the first Model T would not be a comfortable auto experience, listening to this record is just as unbearable. Willing to give it a 2 because I feel bad about a 1. But in my opinion even for the 50's there was much more exciting (jazz) music happening that if I went this far back - I'd rather listen to.
snooze!
I went in expecting to dislike this immensely because I have an innate aversion to Elvis Presley. It wasn't as god awful as expected, but I don't think I can ever see myself going back to listen to it. I'll say this: my ears weren't bleeding and if I heard this in a work-wear store or a Cracker Barrel I'd be like "alright, kind of catchy" but if I would side eye someone for listening to this casually
I mean, it's Elvis. I'm sure everyone knows who he is.
The debut album from The King and I have to be honest, I am not really a big fan of Elvis. I know these songs, but I think he is karaoke singer. I know back in the day this was how music was made, but I'm not that impressed with this style. How many artist didn't get the fame or notoriety because of their colour of their skin? Yes Elvis had a lot of charisma which helped and he has a decent voice, I just have too many issues...without going into creepy relationships, I just choose not to give him attention. For an album of 12 songs, I'm glad it was over in less than 30 minutes. Standouts: Blue Suede Shoes
Some Songs very "schnulzig" as we say in Germany.
A lot of tracks came off as hokey to me. I don't think I like Elvis' vocal style. I definitely did some toe tapping in the car though. Money Honey was decent. Overall not terrible, but not something I would go back to.
Cool to hear some of the old Blues standards from Elvis. Mixed bag production wise, fun pop. I echo others here, music wasn’t really new; just new to white folk.
It’s Elvis. Of course it’s good. Classic songs and that voice. I just don’t care all that much though. But hey, if I were much older I’d probably have a bit more reverence.
maybe this was ground breaking at the time, but I can only think of one, maybe two, songs that are memorable today
not to my taste
Not a huge Elvis fan. This album is not bad, just not something I’ll be going back to often.
This is his first album? He already sounds like an Elvis impersonator really laying it on thick. The rendition of Blue Moon is nice.
Not the best I’ve heard from Elvis, but he was just starting out.
Monotonous One song finished, another started, didn't even notice
I don't like Elvis and I think it's the vocals. I tried to give this a fair shot, but I probably didn't because he's corny. The songs are obviously listenable, sometimes catchy, and sometimes iconic, but I wouldn't go out of my way to choose this. And now that I've gotten to Tutti Frutti, I can say he took the work of Black artists and made it worse. Two stars.
Hrmm... I see the criticism of Elvis and stealing black music. The album is good but on the backs of an entire culture that didn't get to reap the rewards. Also, Elvis's high voice is so weird.
I think it just bores me. Plus I just don't like Elvis as a person.
"If I could find a White man who had the Negro sound, I could make a million dollars," said Sun's Sam Phillips before "discovering" Elvis. While I understand the importance of this record for popularizing rock and roll, you should listen to the black artists from which Elvis stole. They did it better. Go listen to Chuck Berry, Big Momma Thornton, Otis Blackwell, Ray Charles, Lloyd Price, Fats Domino, Rosetta Tharpe, Muddy Waters, and BB King.
Classics are classics but it is a bit boring for 28 minutes. Very similar songs throughout and not as interesting as his later work.
Classic Elvis. Too many love songs for my liking.
Meh
I have my issues with the artist and this trash album
Blue Suede Shoes - okay but nothing too memorable, basic blues shite and okay vocals. I'm Counting on You - a bit more pleasant than the first track, kind of like the doo-wop flavor I've Got a Woman - leave it to Ray One Sided Love Affair - just annoying - both vocally and instrumentality I Love You Because - feels like he changes his the tone of his voice to "fit'" the track and it doesn't connect here. Just Because - not much to say - unremarkable Tutti Frutti - Inoffensive but mid cover Trying to Get to You - maybe the best one so far, better vocals for sure i'm gonna sit right down and cry (over you) - Just very similar instrumentation to every other song with even more annoying vocals I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin) - 🥱🥱🥱 Blue Moon (Take 9/M) - just many better renditions Money Honey - one of the better renditions on the album but still rather forgettable and hopefully the final Elvis song I will listen to
blue suede shoes- 5.9 i'm counting on you- 5.5 i got a woman- 5.8 one-sided love affair- 4.4 i love you because- 4.8 just because-5.3 tutti frutti- 5.4 (https://www.thepinknews.com/2020/05/11/little-richard-tutti-frutti-gay-anal-sex-bumps-blackwell-charles-connor-death/) trying to get to you- 5.1 i'm gonna sit right down and cry (over you)- 4.6 i'll never let you go (little darlin')- 4.3 blue moon (take 9/m)- 6 money honey- 5.6 dick mcgee made some good songs sound really awful. 2.5 stars.
I’m glad popular music has evolved past this style. My favorite Elvis songs, in which there aren’t many, are not on this album. My favorite songs on this album have versions by other artists I like much better. Realistically, whatever was innovative or spellbinding about Elvis during his time is not captured simply by listening to this album.
It's fine. Ive heard em all before and Tutti Frutti is a fucking travesty.
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be
So many recognisable and enjoyable songs, but I've heard them all so often that they're kind of just wallpaper to me.
Boring, but thankfully short. I don't think I can give it one star as it wasn't painful or irritating. Just total nothing music.
Honestly, not the best Elvis album out there. It’s not bad but it’s not something that really stands the test of time.
The pop music equivalent of watching Three's Company in 2023.
blue suede shoes is nostalgic but early rock and roll isn't really all that good for the most part. there's some good stuff! but elvis' debut isn't one of them.
Elvis has a funny voice, I really hope that is how he talked normally as well that would crack me up. These really old albums are hard to rate. Would sound way better if he would introduce a synthesizer or electric guitar or something. He really missed out on his opportunity there. This music is not really my jaunt but I can see where it was really good at the time I think? Just for fun I am going to take the side that he was completely overrated. It was cool to listen to this because of the history but thats pretty much it. At least this album was only 28 minutes long
Ok. I do like some Elvis and appreciate the importance of this, but not his best imho
I mean, it’s Elvis. It’s alright.
It's nothing special, but it is Elvis. Favourite track: Blue Suede Shoes.
It’s Elvis. I’ve never really cared for Elvis. Most of the songs are just “wow a white dude is singing this now.” The only funny thing I noticed is that Blue Suede Shoes feels like early shoe culture. But otherwise I don’t like it.
Elvis more like Smell-vis
só vou dizer uma palavra: whitewash. Elvis era só o que a indústria precisava: bonitinho, com algum talento e o mais importante: branco porque jamais aceitaria vender uma Sister Rosetta Tharpe ou Chuck Berry.
2.5
the hits were the hits the rest were certainly there too
Blue Suede Shoes is a perenial hit. His vocal delivery is both iconic and divisive. Its a little too artificial and forced for me. So he just took the blues and played it faster and boom: Rock and Roll. Yea this sucks as an album but important as a museum piece.
He barely can say his words.
2. I just don't really care for Elvis..
Before: excited After: you can tell it was made before the times that albums generically flowed together and had a few key themes. This album starts fast before jumping to slow and repeats this for most of the album. Wonderful covers and I will always love his voice.
Better than the other elvis album that came up, more rock n roll which i prefer but still not into elvis.
not for me
It's quite easy-listening I guess, but it feels a bit anaemic. If you take away the force that is Elvis and his whole persona and fame, and just listen to it fresh on its own merits, I don't think there's that much there to really get excited about. I appreciate I'm saying this from the year 2023 of course.
Hey Elvis, where'd you get your signature sound!? ...What? ...oh.
Elvis the real one minute man with these short songs. Blink twice and the song is finished. Blue Suede Shoes is great, and I'll credit the fantastic Heartbreak Hotel to this album too. The rest is alright. I give this two ticks of the clock, c'mon Presley, get your stamina up! ⏰⏰
Day 6 I'm assuming this is one of the oldest albums on the list. I only know one of these songs so let's see how this goes. 6 - only song I know from this album. It's alright. 4 - I just want to note that this song has a noticeably worse quality than the first song for some reason. I don't know what the deal with that is. Hopefully that's why it sounds this bad and it's all just a quality thing. 5 - goofy ahh song 3 - I know it was the 50s but like ??? The lyrics are so damn bad. He doesn't sound good on this song at all. The only thing this has going for it is the piano and the drums. 4 - it has to be because I'm tired that these are so lame. This song is essentially just a ballad with him singing and very little going on with instruments and while I think Elvis has a fine voice, it does not show on this song. 7 - this one is fun and is good when I consider the technology they had at the time 7 - this song is so god damn goofy but in a good way. Update on the quality btw: I think this person is literally recording straight from their vinyl record cause like you can actually hear the scratches in the audio. 5 - eh 5 5 - almost exactly the same reasoning for why I have I Love You Because as a 4 except it does a fun little tempo switch at the end so it's slightly better 2 - what I could only describe as Elvis doing his best impression of a dying dolphin over a metronome 7 - Elvis actually doesn't sound terrible on this song and the guitar on it works well. Overall: The best thing about this album is that it's short. There is not a single song that reaches the 3 minute mark and it's only 12 songs long. I actually did a bit of research into what songs are on the list and the list came out in 2005 so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that that's why some of these are the artists 3rd best albums because music was slightly harder to find back then. Overall: 60/120 or 50%
Another album by Presley and Ross. This one is from a different phone is better the previous I still don’t get the fascination with him, it’s not my kind of music. I understand that he was a pioneer in some ways and many groups have said in the past that he was inspiration to them and their music, but in the 2020’s you can clearly see how his music is aged, and not particularly well. 2/5
Scale: 1: Dissapointing 2: Didn't enjoy 3: Decent 4: Enjoyed 5: Would listen again Blue Suede Shoes: 3/5, pretty ok I'm Counting on You: 1/5, nah I Got a Woman: 1.5/5, annoying One Sided Love Affair: 3/5, ok I Love You Because: 1/5, bruh Just Because: 2/5, yeah Tutti Frutti: 3.5/5, weird but ok Tryin' to Get to You: 1.5/5, nah I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You): 2/5, yeah I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin'):1/5, no Blue Moon: 1/5, annoying Money Honey: 3/5, yeah Overall: 1.95/5, cringe most of the time
It sure is Elvis Presley.
Although I appreciate Elvis for his contributions to music, I’ve never been a fan of his music.
I'm a hater but I don't really care for Elvis.
Eh not my taste
if i was a gal in the 50s i would lose my mind over him
The opening here is strong, but the Elvis-washing of the rest of the tracklist only works sometimes. It's an interesting recording to come late in my list: Variant, but almost everything it does is done better elsewhere. A record to know, but the highlights are spiky.
Hints of pub singer. Hints of good energy. Some utter dross.
Meh.
The songs err on the side of simplicity, as far as my current tastes are concerned. And while this may have been cutting edge 66 years ago, I judge the music today.
LeElvis
The album that popularized Rock n Roll is a mediocre country album in retrospect
I can see why he was big for his time. But it doesn't do much for me overall. Thankfully its a short album.
Fine i guess? Without the context from the time the music here just doesnt hold up all that well. Not terrible by any means, not interesting either. At least the extremely short runtime ensures it doesnt overstay its welcome.
eh not terrible couple recongisable songs but not great overall
Ouch. The King, maybe, but not my cup of tea.
Ignoring the huge influence this had on music and culture in general, this is not really that enjoyable today. It's from the 50s so of course it hasn't aged the best. I don't want to give it any pity points for being super old or something - just completely going off my enjoyment, it's a 2/5. Some songs were fine. "Tutti Frutti" was probably my favorite if I had to pick one.
It was okay, can’t imagine myself listening to it much after this though.
Good I guess. Not really my thing
A couple of good songs
Not only did Elvis steal his music and rip off black artists, he also ripped off his album artwork from the Clash. What a jerk.
Never been an Elvis fan - I can’t stand the warbling lol. Some of the songs are fun, but it feels like there just isn’t much substance. Lyrics are super simple and repetitive.
Definitely way ahead of its time! But man, you can sing about something other than love.
Hmm, Elvis doesn't really do it for me. This is his early stuff as well and that rawness comes across. Great voice, but it didn't land for me.
Ajde i ovo čujem. Sasvim okej album, ništa me nije očaralo, ali samim time nisam to ni očekivao. Zapravo šta sam očekivao, to sam i dobio - zabavnjak sa romantičnim pjesmama.
I mean I get why this was revolutionary for its time but it’s not an album I’m gonna pick up on my own or incorporate into any playlists. Blue Suede Shoes and Blue Moon are classics, but when I listen to Elvis (and I do love me some Elvis), I go for other albums lol. I’m gonna rate it for my experience
A ten album Elvisa był trochę lepszy bo krótszy, ale wciąż powtarzalny w gruncie rzeczy i niczym mnie nie przekonujący...
I haven't found a place to stand on Elvis really. I have some good and bad feelings about the guy. Music on this album didn't stand out. Blue Suede Shoes is a bop but I don't like it really, and I do like Tutti Frutti as a song but there are many better performances of the song. Otherwise, no other songs left much of an impression.
Eh, it's Elvis, it is what it is.
Was originally pretty excited to have an Elvis album to listen too. However this album disappointed me a bit. It’s 12 songs and just under 30 mins. The songs are short and quick. Some are up tempo and feels like it plays at double speed. Some of these songs his voice is a bit higher pitch which felt odd for Elvis. Kind of underwhelming overall but it did show that he had potential. 5.3/10
pas retenu grand chose si ce nest que elvis fera vraiment tout pour pas que sa meuf s’en aille
So I listened to an album called Elvis (1956) on YouTube, and after perusing the reviews I've found out that what I listened to was not at all this album as it did not have any of the songs mentioned by others here. Luckily I already know most of those so I'm not going to listen to another one, you hear one Elvis album you've heard them all. He has three styles, the uptempo rockabilly, the blues, and the love (or gospel) croon. Very formulaic, he has a nice voice but he's also the original "manufactured" pop star. He's given all of songs and a career, and in no control of his life or music. Just playing the three types of songs and they all sound the same, can't get into it. Also, my Elvis is Fat Elvis. 2 stars
I wanted to like this. But every song on here has been done better by other people, since. So influential, yes. Good listen, naaah.
This album started with classic Elvis. Blue Suede Shoes is exactly what you want. Then immediately falls down, then never really recovers. There are still listenable songs on the record but nothing surpasses the outdated to become the classic beyond that intro. This might have been a firestorm in its day but it didn’t hold up for me. (Oh and Little Richard made the definitive version of Tutti Fruitti before this album even dropped.) The king is dead. Long live the shoes.
Perus-Elvistä. Tylsää rock 'n roll jurnuttelua ärsyttävän teennäisellä lauluäänellä. Kertakuuntelu riitti muodostamaan mielipiteen.
Wow this is over-rated. Such an iconic debut album but the music just can not stand up to the legacy. Well, maybe the music does but the delivery is where it falls down. This guy is the definition of Style over Content and without the visual it just sounds second rate to me. I had to go listen to Little Richard and Ray Charles to set things right after this finished.
‘Elvis was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me. Sucker’s straight up racist, simple and plain. Motherfuck him and John Wayne.’ – Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Flavor Flav ‘I saw him in concert, Vegas, a few months before he died. He was obviously drugged, very overweight, sweaty and struggling for breath. But he still put on a great show!’ – my mom Ah, the many faces of Elvis: the Vegas incarnation, for sure, with full sequenced cape. Karate Elvis. Graceland Elvis, of course. There’s movie Elvis, gospel Elvis, Elvis in the military, DEA Elvis! But the 1001ers charge is to review just the one particular LP given- in this case, rockabilly Elvis, as yet unfouled by fame and fortune Elvis. The cover reveals it all- just stripped down, pure rockin’ Elvis and the boys. Well, at least on most of the tracks. I could personally do without the sappy numbers like ‘I Love You Because,’ or the dreadful ‘Blue Moon.’ Roy Orbison, sure. Elvis, hmm. But when the joint gets jumpin’ with ‘Blue Suede Shoes,’ and ‘I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry,’ this Elvis and this combo could fit very easily into a daylong punk rock jamboree. Still… you know… people whom I adore- John Lennon, as a great example- seem to always adore Elvis just as much. And, at the expense of bordering on rock n’ roll blasphemy, even rockabilly Elvis sounds just ok in this listener’s ears. Just ok. Rock n’ roll can be served up as a fancy, multi-course affair, dinner candles and such. And that’s fine when you’re in the mood. But other times, when you just wanna piece of deep-fried chicken and a biscuit, then 'Elvis Presley' will fill you right up… at least temporarily.
Never been a huge fan of the old Elvis sound. In terms of formative rock I like Bill Haley and the Comets much better. I appreciate this for what it is though. Didn't realize until this play through that he didn't really write any of his original hits. 2/5
Not really an Elvis fan, it was okay ig
Meh
