Highlights: Protection, Karma Coma, Sly. Top-heavy album but still consistent.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Bittersweet Symphony is the masterpiece on the album and the rest is solid but just not on the same level. Lucky Man comes close, but have never been a fan of Drugs don't work or Sonnet. Space and Time, Weeping Willow are fine. A good album. Not one I return to.
This some white people shit. Not my bag. Sultans is Hella lame. Water of love ok
great to listen to with ya nan. a christmas album for the ages
not in my top 5 cave albums, but solid
⭐⭐⭐
i hate it
just not my thing, i guess
makes me regret all one-star ratings thus far, as i enjoyed all of them more than this
⭐
Some real bangers but way too inconsistent to give top marks
⭐⭐⭐
if the rest of the album was as good as the title track it'd be a five-star
⭐⭐⭐
technically solid but just not for me. horny yawny dad-rock?
⭐⭐
blegh! meatloaf schmeatloaf
⭐
Highlight: (They Long To Be) Close to you
Lowlight: Help
Somewhere in between: the rest
⭐⭐⭐
That's what I'm talkin' bout
i enjoyed it, but also forgot everything about it minutes after listening. except common people. common people gets a whole star just for itself
maybe i'm just generally pretty lukewarm on britpop but this kinda reminded me of a worst-of blur album
⭐⭐
was really enjoying this at first, but the back half is a real dud. sorry james
⭐⭐
i don't regret my time listening to this, but would not listen again willingly
who the heck is david watts anyway. worst song on the album, david watts is a jerk
a monumental point of inflection for their creative direction, a quintessential early-2000s album
why ya gotta make me listen to this right after radiohead
why is this album like 1000 years long
a trailblazer but perhaps hasn't aged super well - feels kinda robotic, forced to my 2023 ears
At least one of these stars is for Angela Bassett
Hate To Say I Told You So is a banger, but diminishing returns as the album goes on, pretty one-note
Five stars, why not. As tempting as it was to deduct stars for Octopus's Garden
Might have considered a 5 if not for the truly terrible A Man Needs A Maid and the fact that I've heard Heart of Gold so many times while browsing the dairy aisle in supermarkets that now it just makes me think of milk
I didn't really enjoy the album but it gets points for reminding me to rewatch Magnolia
Would be a 5, but wow there are a few terrible songs on this thing. But on the other hand, Benny
Hated it when it came out. It grew on me I guess?
Still Sufjan's best, I think. An album I keep coming back to
Wax in your inner ear, doodoo in your outer ear
Two cows a zebra will jump through your atmosphere
Four stars
look, it's a good album, probably better than a 3, but so help me god if I hear time to pretend or kids or electric feel one more time
Kinda wish the rest of the album was as great as the title track
Enjoyed more than expected
Almost gave this a 5. Not sure if I genuinely really rate this album or my brain is still a bit broken from the time it was the only CD we had on a roadtrip
Pretty solid. This is the day an easy stand-out
It's a 2 from me but a 5 from sixteen-year-old me. Self Esteem & Come Out And Play are fun
one star, for being a too-visceral reminder of the cultural hellscape that was the late 90s
So long, Marianne is the easy standout, the rest blurs together a bit
Imagine is butts but the rest of the album is great
all over the place. kinda fun, and given time it might grow on me, but aint nobody got time for that
I dig the album art. The album itself is okay, but sounds too much like other better bands to me 🤷♂️
This is why I love this site, it's so great for discovering unknown albums from bands I've never heard of
I quite like some of this album. A lot I could take or leave.
High: Jane Says (of course), Summertime Rolls, Ocean Size
Low: Standing in the Shower Thinking
I'd give it a 2.5 but rounding down because I have a sore throat
of all the albums about walls, this one is the best
I thought I hated The Smiths? Turns out I don't hate The Smiths
inconsistent but I enjoyed some of this
Stop giving me Costello albums dangit
Mostly dug this. Rounding up
It had moments. I liked the first song. It could maybe grow on me. But alas, it will never have the chance
it's monk time. I wish this was on spotify, this was a pleasant surprise
Can't get past how much he looks like Jason Gunn on the album cover
Is this album meant to be on here
I guess I do not like to boogie-woogie
Rating a one, rating a one
Rating a one, rating a one
Rating a one, rating a one
Rating a one, rating a one
If it was just its strongest half, it'd be a 5, but there's a few there I don't love. Still. 4/5 ain't bad. Highlight: In the Light
Look I love it but also I do subscribe to the philosophy that music should be, on some level, actually listenable
A million years long, but worth it.
I've not cared much for Boy in the past but for some reason this album hit me just right
I thought I liked REM until I listened to this
Not my favourite of theirs, much less consistent than the prev two. DLZ is a banger though. 3.5
Nobody needs to hear FOUR R.E.M. albums before they die. NOBODY. Stop it
Solid but no Pink Moon. Highlight: River Man
I should hate this? I don't hate this
Pretty okay Radiohead album, five stars
Maybe closer to a 3 for me if I'm honest but rounding up to a 4 for the immaculate vibes
A 1 feels very harsh for this album. And yet, here we are
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. It's more a 3 for me but a bonus star for the album cover and the commitment to the whole arty ironic fascist thing
Admittedly pre-judged this one by the album art and band name, but a pleasant surprise. Very '90s for an '80s album
a quiet rainy day inside with hot cocoas was, in retrospect, probably not the appropriate environment to be judging this one, but ah well
I enjoyed a lot about this album. Also, I did not enjoy a lot about this album. Gats and mysogyny pew pew pew
Quite enjoyed listening to this. More of a 3 for me, but rounding down because Ayn Rand
Good! But a good covers album gets a three and that's that
3, but rounding down for the worst album art in music history
This album just made me kinda angry for some reason
A 4, but a 5 in a world where I hadn't heard Portishead's other albums
Not my favourite Bowie album
I gave the other Springsteen's 1. So I guess this is my favourite Springsteen album
3 for the album, but a 5 for Gimme Danger
More like Steely Yawn amirite
Surprised by the low ratings. This thing is a journey, a sublime masterpiece. Full marks
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but there's some real duds in there
I thought I didn't care much for Bob Marley & The Wailers. Who knew?
I really liked some of this! But I only kinda liked the rest of it. Three stars
Is good. Might've been a five if Last Nite hadn't been butchered on the radio for years, but alas, I can no longer listen to it objectively
Safe, sad, soulless. Not interesting enough to be on this list, or any list, unless it is a list of albums that aren't interesting enough to be on lists
I was on the fence, until:
I feel just like Winona Ryder
In that movie about vampires
And she couldn't get that accent right;
Neither could that other guy
3. Very listenable. But a 5 for Son of a Preacher Man
This album takes me back to a very specific time in my life. 4 starts right now but 5 when I'm feeling more nostalgic
I enjoyed this a lot more than expected, had only ever heard “Deceptacon”. Fun album.
Passing me by is a classic. Fun album
Probably overrating this but
I didn't like this album quite as much I remember. Let me give half stars please
This list mostly had me despising Britpop so far. But I dig this
I don't... I don't get it
I don't get it, I thought I hated Coldplay
Nah. Even edgy angsty teenage me would've given this one a 3 at best
I swear that I try. Every time another Springsteen album comes up I do listen to it in earnest, with fresh ears. But I can't. No more. Please I'm begging you
SPACE IS NOT LARGE AND IT IS NOT SMALL
SPACE IS DARK. SPACE DOES NOT CARE
Hey Rikki, lose my number
I know I'm SUPPOSED to like this album. But still
Not best Björk. But still great Björk
3.5. Let me rate half stars dangit
Second only to Disintegration. Classic
This album was really dull at first, but then it really picked up at the end. Turns out it had already finished and Spotify was just playing me other stuff. So, yawn
I don't hate KOL in general but this album in particular is agressively average
I really wasn't in a mood for yacht rock so didn't give this one a fair shake, only got a few songs in. I'll give it another try if I ever go back through all these a second time
I like weird-beck more than sad-beck but it's still a great album
I don't get it, I thought I hated Coldplay
Pleasant and massively impressive a capella album. I confess to involuntarily feeling like I was constantly waiting for the songs to start so can't rate higher than a 3, but that does sound like a me-problem
A comfortable 4/5 for the album for me. Sunny Afternoon is a 10
No, no I don't think so. Thanks anyway
I wanted to like this more than I actually enjoyed listening to it
I hate Spingsteen. But I didn't hate this one for some reason. Way to go, Bruce!
Goddess / Holes are cool. The rest are acceptable
3 but could go up on relisten
Solid album. Probably a 3.5 for me, but rating up because there's a crackup review from someone who gave this a 1 because he's a a STEM guy PHD student who "doesn't get rap" and I'm doing my part to bring balance to this world
Interesting and experimental, but obnoxious and grating in that it feels like I'm getting harrassed by minions for 40 minutes so it all ends up being pretty unlistenable to me, sorry
I am enjoying riding this elevator
Look, it's a 1 from me. But a 5 from angsty teen me, who had this cranked up to 11 for a year straight
A classic, and a personal favourite - but on reevaluation I did find it more pleasant to listen to a mono version, oddly. The vocals especially have a weird channel distribution at times that I wasn't really digging
Couple of bangers, Novocaine is still great. But I do not want to go to Susan's house.
Minus a star for Yellow Submarine because I'm a curmudgeon and I hate fun
At her grungiest. Raw and unpolished but it all works
Loses one star for Dreams.
That's right, you heard me
It's a solid album. But I've seen Chungking Express, so I've already hit my lifetime quote for California Dreamin'
Politically charged, but not subtle. Way too on the nose. For some reason this album reminds me of Banksy. Go figure
