Reviews (page 10 of 13)

No real connection to any one song but overall good album.

Setting all prejudice and the fact that Morissey is a prick aside, this album really isn’t all bad. The ska rhythms of the opener threw me for a loop, and was really good! However, Morissey’s way of phrasing hos vocals get old and tiresome rather quickly, so otherwise decent tunes turn annoying (Stop me if you think…). Paint a Vulgar Picture is the only other song I liked enough to take notice of. 5/10

jamais écouté cet album, un peu déçu, ils ont fait beaucoup mieux je trouve je trouve surtout que Johny Marr aurait pu faire de meilleurs + Last Night I dreamt that Somebody Loved Me - tous les sons sont au même niveau

3/5 ? écoutable

The Smiths are a band that never disappoint and each and every listen is usually enjoyable. This is probably their worst project, but it's still incredible. ''Strangeways, Here We Come'' is the fourth and final album by The Smiths, one of the most influential and recognizable bands of the 80s. It was released when the band had already split up, but the recordings were basically finished. Why for me is it the worst album of theirs? Easy, it has a lot of songs that feel more poppy on purpose. You don't feel the connection that you do on their other projects. Songs like 'Unhappy Birthday' or 'Girlfriend In a Coma' are songs with pretty mediocre writing, while 'Death At One's Elbow' has one of the cheapest beats the band has ever delivered. But hey, it's still a good album.... These low peaks it has are compensated with too many high peaks like 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before', one of the band's most intimate songs that made me get emotional. Death of a Disco Dancer' seems to me a song with a very catchy and hypnotic rhythm. The latter is also important. The production doesn't seem to me the neatest but without a doubt one of their most hypnotic productions ever made. Each track has a catchy rhythm that will catch you in the end.

I kind of wanted to not like it, but it was okay

A nice listen but no real stand out songs and sounded a little dated without the nostalgia factor for me.

Look, Morrissey has a great voice, and with the music polished up, this is a Smiths album worth listening to.

I would really like this if I’d gotten into it in middle school

It's fine, but nothing really stands out. Highlights: "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish" (midtempo pop), "Girlfriend in a Coma" (nice strummy pop song with cool string parts, although the music seems a bit too upbeat for the subject matter) Notable: "Last Night I Dreamed that Somebody Loved Me" (the first half basically sounds like a hellscape of chaos then Morrissey comes in with his overdramatic Morrissey thing), "Paint a Vulgar Picture" (wow, those lyrics)

This was fine. I didn't love or dislike it.

Turns out I don’t hate the Smiths like I thought. I don’t love them, but also don’t hate them.

Not really my favorite Smiths album and I'm not entirely sure this album needs to be on the list when their better quality stuff is here also, but the Smiths are also consistent and Strangeways, Here We Come is consistent Smiths. 3/5

My third Smiths album. It was fine, didn’t really change my world or anything. By this point, I think I have an idea of what they’re about.

2.9/5 listened 1x

Morrisey loves to take the piss. Unhappy birthdays and joyful glee at his girlfriend being in a coma. Decent tunes though

ok album i never have to listen to it again

7/10 kinda like the cure except not and the cure is better but it’s still good 👍

Morrisey is a great man who wants nothing more than England to preserve its culture. His warnings have now come true and the entire world is suffering destruction from the inside. This might be my favorite of his solo works, his music is dreadful but this was ok

This album contains many of the type of Smiths songs that I don't like (In the vein of Frankly mr Shankley, girlfriend in a coma). But it also has some that work very well and touch the appropriate receptors.

Really idiosyncratic and well-penned collection of tunes. Not exactly my cup of a tea aside from a few gripping stand outs. The beginning of the record is hard to listen too as Morrisey sounds extra whiny and the affect he puts on his voice is unbearable. It’s great for the smiths, it sounds like a really solidified sound at this point in their discography not as urgent as their first 3 records but maturely produced.

Male manipulator core

Not a huge fan of the first two tracks but it picks up from there The lyrics from GF in a coma are so sus and concerning Smiyttyhtob is a classic obviously I enjoyed Unhappy Birthday quite a lot Final track was good too

Oh the Smiths. Not one of my preferred albums of theirs, it’s just kind of there. But then “Girlfriend in a Coma” comes on and there it is.

Used to listen to this loads as a teen, the first Smiths album I heard. Great first side then trails off

What I definitely give 5 stars to is that I'm a little under 1/5 through this project but have already had 2/3 of The Smiths' albums. So. I thought I could just copypaste my - rather favourable - review of "Meat Is Murder" here but no, they had to discover synths and strings and bells and whistles and a "lush" and "rich" production and there goes the charm. The (threeish) good songs are, well, kinda good but I'm in no mood for the whole thing. Trite. Boring. Next!

This was quite a pleasant listen, although it's a little light for my taste. It's very well-produced, they get an excellent and varied sound. The production does an especially good job with Morrissey's voice, which I've never liked, but with enough echo it works pretty well here. That said, the songs are quite simple, they're not a virtuosic group, and while the tempo is upbeat throughout, it feels kind of low-energy, I think partly because Morrissey's voice just sounds so distant. And it's very short too, which helps make it an easier listening experience. I liked it well enough.

Turns out i like the smiths

Bigger and more atmospheric than the last Smiths album, though I don’t feel too differently about it. This is succeeding at what it wants to do, I think I’ve just learned I’m not the world’s biggest fan of what the Smiths want to do. Best song: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

I don’t have much exposure here and I’m torn between being predisposed by the reputation of the music and the reputation of morrissey, but I enjoyed it

A lot of moaning without emotion. I never believe the words Morrissey sings. That being said, the writing, lyrics, production, instrumentation, arrangement, and structure are all solid and I enjoyed a couple songs. 3/5

I remember liking the other Smiths albums more. This wasn't bad by any means though.

That's not my taste in musik. But ok.

Oh look more Smiths! Or is this our first? It’s hard to tell when I see English rock because they all blend together at this point.

Another from the Smiths, really not much else to say aside from that. They have a style they make music in, when you've heard one Smiths album you've kind of heard them all. That "Unhappy Birthday" song made me laugh out loud, it was just stupid. Other than that, decent album, I'll keep a few. Favorite tracks: Death of a Disco Dancer, Stop Me If You Think, Paint a Vulgar Picture. Album art: Is that Morissey? I've always assumed it was, but looking again I'm not sure. Regardless, it seems to be a rather ancient picture of a nondescript man looking down. That's about it, pretty boring cover. 3/5

The last album by The Smiths, not powerful but containing good songs!

Important band, good album. This list probably has 100 Morrissey albums on it though. Queen is Dead and we're good; chuck some more hip-hop / women / non-western artists in the next rewrite?

Far inferior to The Queen is Dead (still would give it a 4.5 if ranking today), but better than solo Morrissey (probably rated those too high). Can't really decide if anything is worth saving, which maybe isn't a good sign for a smack dab average rating, but I guess I'll go with Girlfriend in a Coma and I Won't Share You.

Eher lame

Pensavo peggio: piacevole!

I generally can't stand Morrissey and the Smiths, but I have to admit that this album is ok -- much better than I expected. Not as morose and depressing as most of their music. Still not my choice but not a bad listen.

This was more Beatlesy than I expected! Melodic and poppier than other Smiths I’ve heard. Not my fave but not bad!

Not as depressing as I remember. I never took to The Smiths but as I’ve got older, I am less resistant to them, especially as I think Johnny Marr is pretty cool.

Good 80‘s Pop (postpunk?) music with a nice voice and lyrics… 6/10

It's aight

Didn't finish it bc I was too excited for Modest mouse + pixies concert but the smiths are fiiiiire chill bros

Good 80’s vibes. Blended together for me for sure, but I didn’t mind it. Quick and fun listen.

I like The Smiths, but even though this is usually considered to be their best album it’s not my favorite of theirs. I know they’re an acquired taste, but I still think it’s a decent album. Nothing bad, but nothing to write home about.

I listened to this album on Friday, and I'm writing this review on Sunday. I couldn't tell you a single thing about the album. Inoffensive, but unremarkable.

Reasonable listen but nothing stuck out other than the lyrics, which were downright funny at times. Girlfriend in a Coma was the most enjoyable!

ok, typischer 1980er Britpopstimmen

"Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" Urgh, Morrissey. The original incel?

This was pretty pleasant to listen to, but there wasn't a lot of range. The songs all blurred together a bit for me, and no single verse, chorus or song really grabbed me. I wouldn't mind listening again, but I also wouldn't really miss it if I didn't.

I’m liking this. Not normally an 80s music fan, but this is pushing early 90s sound. On the forefront. A bit endless by the end Felt longer than it was, a lot sounded the same 3 star

Morissey Bad but Album Good

I've heard of the Smiths. Never listened to much of their stuff. I do believe this is the beginning of Emo music. Not really my style. I do respect the Smiths and know how popular and legendary they are.

I don't have a lot to say on this one, but I liked it all pretty well. Morrissey really sounds like Kermit sometimes, but it works.

Teksten zijn ontzettend sterk met hits als "My girlfriend is in a coma, My girlfriend is in aaaa comaaaaaa" en "I wish you a unhappy birthday" Geweldig. Mazzelpikkies! FAVO: Girlfriend in a coma, Unhappy birthday

Enjoyable

I've never intentionally listened to a Smiths song before, and now I won't actively avoid them.

Very 80’s. Very sad.

Nice collection of morrissy misery

This is fine. Nice hearing them expand their sound a little, adding a bit more life to Moz's infamous moaning. Interesting hearing them at the end of their career with a lament about the state of the music industry.

Not that bad Unhappy birthday was dumb

The album is ok. It is nice but nothing more.

Last one of the Smiths! Brilliant songs, Morrissey's poetry is sharp, and he has not yet turned into a neofascist. Johnny Marr's guitar work will quietly influence thousands of wannabes in the decade to come. It's my favourite Smiths record, not necessarily the best, but the first that I truly listened to (in several road trips, like all records should be listened to). In a strange way, I share it with my mom who absolutely does not listen to this kind of music. But she was trapped with me in a metal box for hours that weird time in 2003 and there was only this tape and one by Pavement. So I know this pretty much by heart. Now if only Morrissey could have gotten his act together and become a decent human...

It's fine ha. Some weird songs man. Girlfriend in a coma

This isn't the kind of music I thought The Smiths made, I thought they were a lot more punky. This was an inoffensive but uninteresting album to me. I liked a few of the songs, "Girlfriend In a Coma" and "Death at One's Elbow". All in all I wasn't very entertained, but it wasn't bad. I'll give them a 5/10, leaning towards a 6/10.

Rating: 7/10 This album is more of the same for them, it does not have the unique sound as their other albums do. A few great songs on here that are a bit different for them but mostly the same old song and dance. They have better albums, at least three of them. Favorite songs: A Rush and a Push, Death of a Disco Dancer, Girlfriend in a Coma. Worst song: Death at One's Elbow.

Maybe the most cheerful that The Smiths has ever been. Ending things on a good note, I guess? There's still a lot of dreariness but there's also more life and melody. Thank goodness for that. Standouts are Girlfriend in a Coma, I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, and Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before.

Good instrumentals Ok lyrics

It's the smiths, never could get into them. Some decent singles but was never bothered by the albums. 2.5*

Unremarkable.

Far better than I thought. Never a Morrissey fan, nor a Smiths fan. But this album did a lot. Still not making my top 100, but did a great job.

Much better than the last Smiths album I got. I am still not a huge fan of Morrisey’s voice but musically it was pretty good.

That was thoroughly unimpressive. Sometimes Morrissey's weird singing lands with me. Nothing on this album really hits. Johnny Mar is still quite good, but it's overall just meh.

Great first listen. I really enjoyed the irreverent lyrics! Quite hilarious at times.

For some reason, Spotify really wants me to love the Smiths. They’re almost always the first song out of the queue in the “smart mix” the algorithm prepares for me. The truth is, I don’t hate them, but I’m not particularly excited by them either, and Morrissey’s voice can get annoying after a while. This album was no different.

I liked this, but in an average way.

He just never moved the dial for me.

I passionately believe that The Smiths sound like The Smiths. It’s a shame Morrisey is involved in the whole Smiths thing though.

meh I realized long ago that the only way to listen to The Smiths and have an enjoyable time is to listen to pre-made "Best Of" albums. If you do that, The Smiths are really good. If not, then they aren't.

Really vibed with some tracks, others were a bit odd.

Girlfriend in A Coma Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

Hah, ok here we go... I can't help but love Morrisey, despite the insufferable turd of a child he's always been.

passes over me not that knowtable

This is a Smiths album. I like the earlier albums better, but this one's not bad. All their albums do the same for me. Stop Me if You Think You've Heard This One Before is my favorite.

So I did some math today and figured out that I've been making fun of Morrissey for a really long time. Probably since I was about 17 years old. If I remember correctly I was copying his voice in a highschool class where we had a teacher had been a little closer to us in age (early 30s maybe) and my obnoxious impersonation of Morrissey seemed to get under her skin. I think she'd been a teenage girl in her room clutching her pillow and listening to The Smiths. So the band had a special place for her. I guess all that to say that I was pleasantly surprised that I liked a lot of what I heard on this album. I found the music to be interesting and it kept me coming back to different songs. Morrissey despite a lot of repetitive intervals in his melodies has a good voice. Nice vibrato and does some interesting things over some even more interesting music. The band backing him has some pretty cool groves and song arrangement. The songs lacked strong hooks in the choruses to me because of similarities in verse and chorus, but the songs still kept my interest. These guys have a unique sound and I can see how they would influence other artists. I had to go back and give How Soon Is Now another listen. Standouts to me on this one.... Girlfriend in a Coma and I Started Something I Could Not Finish.

Great indie album, I still have lots to discover.

I guess I’m supposed to hear a lot of new wave before I die. Just ok

First of all - I really hope this is the last The Smiths album on the list. Morrissey has long overstayed his welcome by now. Side One is surprisingly good and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Side Two on the other hand starts out fine, but then goes on to become everything I really dislike about The Smiths - especially the last 3 songs are just shite.

In total a little bit boring. Some nice parts, but ...

I like the smiths but this is not their best work

Very enjoyable, not at all what I had conditioned myself to expect. I grew up during The Smiths era and had never warmed to their music, if any, I actually found it awful. This album was pretty good.

Atmosferische tracks als Death Of A Disco Dancer en Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me wijken duidelijk af van het bekende Smiths recept. Rating: 8 Highlights: Girlfriend In A Coma, Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

Dat tweede kan ik me beter voorstellen, omdat het soms echt letterlijk 'dagboektaal' is wat hij op een zeurderige manier voordraagt: I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday 'Cause you're evil And you lie And if you should die I may feel slightly sad But I won't cry Niet echt hoogstaand. 7,5/10 Highlights: Death of a Disco Dancer Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before I Won't Share You

Better than I thought

Always liked Johnny's guitar playing but Morrisey makes me want to slit my wrists

It's a really well written album and I did enjoy it ... felt like it went on forever though!!!!!

I really don’t know how to feel about The Smiths. The songs are exquisitely well crafted and executed but Morrissey’s arrogance just radiates through every second of them.

The songs kind of sound the same. More of a songs artist than an album artist I guess.

Just another Smiths album, I swear they all sound the same to me. Never really understood the hype over this band.

Fine. A couple catchy songs. But (copied and pasted from my review of a different Smiths album in this project): another situation of great artists, possibly terrible person?

Not as good as our last Smiths. Better than the last Morrisey. I think I’m good on both. How much more could possibly be on this list?

Morrissey has the elagance as almost a hockey player skating on ice. He makes sad songs not seem that sad

I like the quirky nature of the Smiths. The songs are almost ironic because of how playful they make serious topics sound. When these 3 years are up, I may go back and fit them into my listening carousel.

It’s not a red flag to say I liked a smiths album. The singer has a nice voice and I liked the vibe

Good listening to this.

Probably a 2.5. It just doesn’t grab me.

Good Smiths album, but not my favorite (that would be The Queen Is Dead). Girlfriend in a Coma is great though. It’s still very Smiths-y with a little more flourished instrumentation (making their music sound as dramatic as their lyrics), with the typical Morrissey-isms and Marr-isms. The songs and lyrics don’t hit me as hard as their previous release, but not sure if that’s due to the quality or me being less familiar with them. Still a strong album and good listen, just not their top in my opinion.

3.5 Not sure if the Smiths are just growing on me, but I like each album more than the last. Probably my favourite one of theirs so far. Kinda hope three is all they get on this list though

A few standouts, but overall nothing special.

Just the right amount of sarcasm and great musicianship. I really enjoyed this album. Morrissey can sing.

not their best work

Not really a smiths fan. Morrissey’s voice just annoys me. Not even bc he’s evil.

Great album Smiths don't get enough love

it was groovy like other smiths stuff I've heard and liked but he makes a few choices with his vocals that were just jarring to me. it was ight

The influence from the White album is apparent throughout, resulting in a dynamic and varied Smith's album. A shame to see them go so soon, but a great final album from the Smiths.

First time I actually enjoy the Smiths! 3/5

Not nearly the best Smiths’ album. I really like Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before. It’s classic Smiths. Girlfriend In A Coma & Paint A Vulgar Picture both contain terrific Morrissey lyrics. It’s an easy album to listen to, without being riveting. They never made many albums & never made a bad album. But they were usually more interesting than this.

I was a teenager while the Smiths were an active band, and their singles were inevitably played of Triple J radio, the local public alternative station. So I was aware of the Smiths while they were happening. I remember someone asking me (age 16) if I was a fan, probably because I seemed like the kind of person who would be (read as: miserable sod). But I wasn’t really a fan. I had friends who were, but the music just didn’t grab me. Morrissey’s odes to a fabulous loneliness just didn’t appeal. I might have been a miserable teenager, but I aspired not to be. And, while I have picked up a few Smiths LPs over the years, I rarely play them (How Soon Is Now excepted). I’m going to quote from Tom Ewing’s piece in Pitchfork (https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/12385-the-sound-of-the-smiths/): “There are two big problems with performing misery, though. First, it's easy for it to set into self-parody. By the time the group split, singles like 'Girlfriend in a Coma' were setting these alarm bells off-- frothy, fun, but nowhere near as striking as the band's best work. Secondly, it really helps if you have the star power and natural charisma of Morrissey: Bands with less of a frontman could find themselves in a trap, glamorizing a loneliness they could have fought. Your reaction to the Morrissey cult of personality is still likely to determine your reaction to the band as a whole-- grotesquely unfair on guitarist Johnny Marr though that is. It's thanks to him that everything the Smiths did is worth hearing, even when his lyricist is having an off day. His range and ambition as a composer widened through the band's life, and his contributions remained consistently stellar.” Truth be told, as time has gone on, I have less and less tolerance for Morrissey. He’s a an arrogant, unlikable, judgmental, racist prick. I can admire the songs, but I completely understand why a lot of people find it far more palatable to listen to Rick Astley’s (reputedly excellent) Smiths tribute shows, because Rick is 1) a terrific singer and 2) a genuinely decent human being. But I admire the work of the band, especially Johnny Marr. He has said that this album is the band’s best work, and I tend to agree. Some of the production choices have dated poorly (drum machines and cheap synthesizers), but the arrangements are stellar. I particularly enjoy last 'Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me'. I’d really enjoy a version where the drum machines were stripped out, real orchestrations replaced the synths and the whole thing was re-mixed a bit more sympathetically. And there are some cracking songs, if you can stand Morrissey for a few minutes. It’s witty and clever, with some surprising imagery, and an occasional good tune (when Morrissey breaks out of his three-note melody thing). And then there is ‘Paint a Vulgar Picture’, which is completely prescient of the Smiths post-breakup career; constantly re-packaged and re-sold. Hanging a lampshade on it doesn’t make it any less exploitative. And, despite your lyrics, Steven, your hateful public statements will taint you in my eyes.

Silly lyrics. Short fun album. Didn’t hate.

Not bad. Really dug girlfriend in a coma. Overall not a huge smiths/morrisey fan but it was good for what it is

a bit depressing

There's something about their tone and meter. It just blurs until every song sounds the same.

not their best. shimmering production and weaker-than-usual songwriting make for a boring listen.

Morrissey is a douche but this is pretty good

Initial impression is 3 out of 5 which likely won't change over time. That's not because the album is bad. The appeal is understandable, but the novelty feels lost listening to it in 2024.

First listen Saved 5/10: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish Death of a Disco Dancer Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me Unhappy Birthday

I never loved the Smiths, never loved the combination of Morrisey's voice and their melodies although I can admire his voice, some lyrics and the band's playing. This album didn't do anything for me.

Smiths. Unmistakably specific sound, like in Unhappy Birthday.

Loved some of the standout tracks, not huge on the rest but good listen.

Grew on me as the album played on, but not as polished as I like my 80's music.

3.Track erinnert mich an Anfänge von Lenny Kravitz. Vorbild für ihn? Mischung aus 80er Sound, Punk, New Wave.

Day47 - it’s a good album and the smiths are great but morrisey is such a a-hole it penalizes the rating

I've heart good things about The Smiths in the past, but never listened to their music. After hearing them, I can say that they are pretty decent easy listening music. Love anything from the 80s. Although maybe I'm missing something but overall they are just "Ok" in my opinion.

To me, The Smiths are a bit like U2: there's nothing technically wrong with their music; I just don't dig it, apart from a few songs. Maybe both bands just take their music too seriously. Not sure. Either way, it's a perfectly middleground 3/5.

Marr 5+ Morrisey -5 Songs - 3-4

I mean it's Alright don't get me wrong but I feel that there could have been more.

Extremely Brave and Iconoclastic Middle-of-the-Road Review: The arrangements and guitar playing are kinda nice, but wow, Morrissey is annoying.

The smiths are always a nice listen. I'll admit I'm not the most active listener when I listen to them and this album doesn't seem to have as many tracks that hit as the queen is dead or louder than bombs. I still like stop me if you've heard this one and death of a disco dancer for sure though and they don't write bad music generally.

This deserves another listen to, but for now, I must move on.

Everything I expect from The Smiths

Good, but not as good as their previous work.

"Strangeways, Here We Come" by The Smiths falls short of expectations, especially for newcomers like me. Because this is the first time I am listening to a whole Smiths album and its a very rough introduction. It lacks the innovation and depth that their peers had in that time period. While some tracks hint at their potential, the album overall feels bland and uninspired. I can see why a lot of people like them, but this is just not for me.

It's just not The Queen Is Dead. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me and Paint A Vulgar Picture are the stand out tracks for me.

"Strangeways, Here We Come" by The Smiths, released in 1987, is the band's final studio album, and it reflects both their musical prowess and internal tensions. The album boasts Morrissey's distinctive vocals and Marr's intricate guitar work, evident in tracks like "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish" and "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me." While containing some standout moments, the album is perceived by some as lacking the consistency of The Smiths' earlier works. It wrestles with both brilliance and a sense of fatigue, as the band was on the verge of dissolution. Awarding it a moderate 3/5, "Strangeways, Here We Come" is appreciated for its musical merits but falls short of the band's earlier heights, making it a somewhat bittersweet conclusion to The Smiths' discography.

Meh. It all kind of blends together. Even for artists I don't like I can see the appeal, but here I don't see why people like Morrissey and his projects like this.

Good sound, just not my style

Am I missing something when I listen to The Smiths? I mean their sound is… fine. High quality, yadda yadda yadda… but to me, it sounds like a British lounge singer crooning for a sad teenager letting them know it’s ok to feel that way and everything is going to be ok. Throw Depeche Mode and Morrisey in that category as well (from the music I’ve heard from them). Let me make this clear: there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. There is definitely a market for that. When I hear those in the know speak very highly of The Smiths, I am expecting something life changing. Maybe I’m just hearing it from former sad teenagers. High 3

Not my favorite Pavement record, but better than I remember. It’s good, but not their peak imo. It’s a little all over the place, which might be part of the appeal for some but for me a couple of their later records pull it off better.

Average album. Nothing bad or good stood out.

His voice is so unique. I've not heard this album or any of the songs on it, so this was all new to me. I enjoyed it.

I know nothing of the Smiths, other than I know some people with that last name. 1987 was the year the Cards got beat by the Twins in the World Series. Song 1. OK, Brits. Its pretty catchy. The little growl before he says 'rush' is neat. So far so good. Song 2. Some electric guitar to start. Definitely something I am a fan of. This does sound like music from the 80s/90s. Maybe this album was suppose to be the start of something. I definitely didn't get the Smiths growing up in the middle of nowhere. Snuck some growling in. You know I like that. Song 3. and some other songs. This hasn't been terrible. But nothing has grabbed me. Maybe I can't work during these listens. But I get going on something and then it just sort of hangs back there. Aaaand done. It really did slip by me. Not a terrible listen, but not really a jam. And nothing that I'd put on any regular play.

Enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would! But still very annoying in parts

I wouldn’t say this is their best album.

I find Morrisey irritating on many, many levels but, musically, I found myself quite enjoying this. There is the persistent whining and uneccesary gloom ... but it's actually quite a pleasant listen. That would all be Marr's doing, I guess?

Enjoyable and some songs brought a smile to my face.

Not good for me. 2.5/5

Used to listen to the Smiths years ago - enjoy some of their music. Mostly the older music.

Drugs would make this album really come alive.

Easy to listen and to forget.

Good everyday listening.

In context of its time probably different. Not that exciting to me.

Wooshy 80s rock, what more can I say? So much reverb. Liked it okay. Favorite track: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me.

Lead singer less annoying than I expected. Good harmony between the two guitars

Not my favorite

it's fine

Classic smiths sound, with the talk-singing and a matching slow drifting guitar and drum ensemble.

90s sounding brit rock

solid 3/5

I have heard of the Smiths, the album was pretty good, even though in my personal opinion, the singers voice is pretty monotone. Solid album overall.

I am LOVING Unhappy Birthday

i listened to this album twice yesterday and while all the tracks kinda blended together into a sad boy slurry, it was pretty decent. on the other hand, fuck Morrissey. after listening to girlfriend in a coma, I'm starting to think he actually did murder that poor woman. also these song titles are like mid-2000s length fall out boy/panic at the disco length and similarly unnecessary. favorites: a rush and a push..., stop me...

What’s all the fuss about

Like when you know something is significant yet don't understand why

Decent enough effort by Johnny Marr and his crew.

Pretty Chill, I feel like more enjoyment could obtained by critically listening. But I honestly feel a little lukewarm about the album now.

1987. I really like the sound of this album. It sounds like it could have been written to fit into a playlist of current music.

massive smiths fan. lots of great morrissey growls on this one. not my favorite album but "girlfriend in a coma" is all time.

Yeah I started something I couldn't finish too... this album 🤢 (jk, some good tunes here)

It's the smiths

Gorszy niz poprzedni, który słuchałem

Loved the first two songs, especially A rush and a push and the land is ours, but the rest of the album kind of blended together. All the other songs had kind of the same sound, which was good at the beginning but got boring after a while. 6/10 just because i loved those small growls of the singer

No skips solid Smiths album with a more varied sound than their other albums but a weaker second half. High point is Death of a Disco Dancer.

I can only tolerate Morrisseys voice in small doses. But the rest of the band is fine.

A more pop-oriented album than I’d expected, with songs like I Started Something and Girlfriend in a Coma leading the way. Overall too jangly and underplayed bass lines for me, however.

i don't really care about the lyrics cause he mumbles too much for me to understand them anyway faves: a rush and a push, i started something, stop me

Está bien

Easy listen with some good jams but nothing crazy

There's some good songs on this, but in general it is pretty boring. At least it's not too long.

Dream indiehazepop from the late 80s. I've been more into this sort of genre the last few months so this is a welcome album to listen to.

Clearly a decent album, I just cant make my mind up on the voice - I don't know if I like it or hate it but I do know its moody and he's a cunt

My first experience with The Smiths Good production. Liked Death of a Disco Dancer Personally I feel dark comedy in music is an odd choice, unless it's for a musical sketch comedy show. This guy seems to be walking a fine line between being cheeky and being an asshole.

"Girlfriend in a coma" is the standout.

I just can’t abide by morrisey. The music will never out shine how utterly irritating he is in every way

Not my genre

old style sort of innovative not really my style though

I'm really hoping for something more cheerful today! I don't think im familiar with the Smiths so we'll see how it goes. First impression: it's different at least! An energetic opening, although there is tension in the tone. The piano/synth definitely feels very 80s. And I like the way the vocalist really growls out some of the lines. This album is pretty chill and laidback so far, with just a little bit of egdge. Didn't feel strongly about the first couple tracks but Unhappy Birthday was an absolute hoot. Funny as shit. "Drink and be ill tonight 🍻". After that I noticed a few more instances of funny cynical lyrics. "Has the Perriere gone straight to your head? Or is life sick and cruel instead?" I didn't know Perrier was that old haha

I feel like I was supposed to like the Smiths when I was a teenager. I like morrisey’s voice but the music doesn’t do it for me.

Decent album but not as good as the queen is dead or meat is murder

I wouldnt turn it off if it was on

Not as much of the goth/dark vibes that I think people (including me) associate with The Smiths, but still easily recognizable as The Smiths. It is evident to me that they were starting to lean their sound in a slightly different direction at this point: in the direction of what would become 90s alternative. I still found it enjoyable, though I did miss the darker lean.

Previously rated: Meat Is Murder (3/5) *********************** I listened to this yesterday and don't remember a lot about it beside the lyrics to Unhappy Birthday. I laughed and then was disturbed at them. The song titles are all interesting at least. Best track: Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This Before.

Love the smiths, but this album was less memorable than others. It still has the smiths charm, but is forgettable compared to some of their other stuff.

It's a good album but something didn't click for me. None of the songs stood out.

Some nice rock. Wasn't taken away

I really didn't need a third Smiths album on this list. I got everything I needed from Meat is Murder and The Queen is Dead. This isn't as good as Queen is Dead and I doubt I would choose to listen to this one if I was listening to The Smiths.

i liked it, the smiths are a little grinding to me for a full album, so whiny

Kinda boring for a smiths album

Its the smiths, lol.

Highlights: Death of a disco dancer- great instrumentals, early radiohead vibes. One of the few times the music doesnt mesh woth morriseys singing

It's interesting because yesterday I was given New Order and the day before that I got The Cars. This bombardment of 80s synth-pop puts me in a position to rank them against each other in my mind. However, this is the review for The Smiths (and it's statistically unlikely someone else would get my album luck). It's the Smiths...poppy 80s sound with strong lyrics and iconic vocals. It hits all the notes you want in the Smiths. And that's why I'm only giving it a 3. There are other Smith's album with a little more flair and experimentation from the standard.

👍🏼

The Killer var så fed!! Girlfriend in a Coma fik den op på 4 stjerner, Unhappy Birthday trak den ned på 3 igen

Good album, nothing really hit me deeply but I didn’t skip anything and generally enjoy The Smiths’ sound.

Love the Smiths, not my favorite album of them but there’s definitely a couple of songs I saved. For the full experience listen to this with a scented candle lit and a pumpkin spice latte because this is fall music babyy

It's a bit as if you're listening to Mumford and Sons. When you're starting to wonder 'how long is this song?' you've already heard half of the album. I like the music though! Nothing wrong with it. Especially the song 'Death of a Disco Dancer'.

The Queen Is Dead er meget meget bedre.

All over the place, but enjoyable?

Wild that this was the last run for the group - first two tracks immediately show what made The Smiths what they were - swooning deep vocals and instrumentation that gives a jangle flavor to the dominant trends of the 80s. Love the coda to Death of a Disco Dancer Girlfriend in a Coma is kind of a snoozer to me, but love the energy and emotion in Stop Me if You think you've heard this one before Last night I dreamt is also a bit of a snoozer for me Love the melancholy energy in Unhappy Birthday, feel like paint a vulgar picture is a tad drawn out Really enjoy the variety of styles on Death at One's Elbow and the emotional closer. I probably lean around 3.5 stars but I'll go 3. Solid album with highs and lows for me

A rush and a push and the land is ours- 8 I started something I couldn't finish- 7.4 Death of a disco dancer 7.3 Girlfriend in a coma 6.7 Stop me if you think you've heard this one before 6.8 Last night i dreamt that somebody loved me 6.6 Unhappy birthday 6.9 Paint a vulgar picture 6.8 Death at one's elbow 7 I won't share you 7.3 3.5 stars

There are some unexpected departures from the signature sound of the Smiths on this album, with notable emphasis placed on keys, acoustic guitars and, at times, a sound that leans on old rockabilly motifs. Lyrically, probably not Morrissey’s finest work but he’s as consistent as ever vocally. Johnny Marr’s guitar playing is less prominent on this album than previous Smiths works but it still shines. 3.5/5 Standout tracks: A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours, Girlfriend in a Coma, Paint a Vulgar Picture

There was some good music in there, but nothing that stands out.

Nice music, but why does the singer have to be such a freaking tool?

The second half is pretty good, but I didn't like this 10 song album until 5 songs in.

not bad sounding but didn't really have anything unique

Good Album Has a good feel and a quality sound

This is my second Smiths record on this generator. As was my complaint with the first album (The Queen is Dead), Morrissey is depressing as fuck to listen to. Morrissey sounds happiest when he's singing about death, or being a dick. There's a song "Girlfriend in a Coma" where he sounds extatic. There's also Unhappy Birthday, where he wishes someone an UN... Happy birthday.... Simply because he's a douche I think. And he sounds so happy about it. Some lyrics from that song include: "... And if you die... I may feel slightly sad, but I won't cry...." "but I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday... Because you're evil and you lie" Truth be said, this is the Smiths most upbeat album that I've heard, but still depressing as fuck. I just find it hilarious how Morrissey seems so happy to be depressed. Seems like he sings about death with a smile on his face. Favourite songs: Paint a Vulgar Picture, Girlfriend in a Coma, Death at One's Elbow, I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before Least favourite songs: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, I Won't Share You 3/5

While I like the Smiths, this one over-indexes on downer.

made me want to kill my dog, but in a pleasant light hearted way.

Decent - actually liked some towards the end more than the earlier songs

Good lyrics but most songs are very similar.

Was not a bad listen. Had some nice songs in it, none of them I can remember tho lol

Ok here we go got this one, this album in The Smiths discog adds to the jangle pop indie rock sounds with a poppier edge. Though, it doesn’t extend to the entire album, are there are some inconsistencies. Songwriting wise probably on the lower side of Smiths albums, at least the debut had a more consistent meloncholy sound

Generally enjoying myself. Stop me if youve heard this one before is a highlight.

Early thoughts, enjoyed it a lot more than unknown pleasures Very funny lyrics, morrissey singing about how he wishes someone an unhappy birthday is great Bass still very good, but music is less driving than unknown pleasures

Not my favorite from the smiths

The Smiths are great, just not something I seek out a ton. I think these were all new to me, Happy Birthday was hilarious (for a little while at least). All good, just not super “for me” 🤷🏻‍♂️

So I didn't make notes as I listened, shame on me. Overall I liked it but didn't love it

I thought I hated The Smiths? Turns out I don't hate The Smiths

rien de notable

Very much their typical sound. Funny lyrics sometimes

pretty good

I always assumed The Smiths were another folksy/country/family type deal, so I encountered several surprises: 1. They're nothing like The Carpenters, 2. They're British! I wasn't feeling anything in this album until track 3's bass guitar, then I started to open up to it. I can enjoy some dark irony, and there's a few tracks here that scratch that itch. Track 5 sends me vibes of Duran Duran. Musically, this album is fine.

It's...fine.

Typische jaren 80 Britse rock. De titels zijn lang en soms grappig. Teksten slaan volgens mij totaal nergens op

The first half of the album was much better than tge second half. The lyrical content was very emotional, real and raw. After a while it just became a downer. It's a very intelligent album and I would listen to it again with the lyrics up. I know Morrissey is known as the King of Sad/ sorry for yours lf which I finally understand after listening to this. Some songs just feel like they're trying too hard to be like fuck this world and poor me. But it was a pretty good album nether the less.

Bellends can make good music.

I really like the Smiths, but knew most of their songs mostly by listening to random songs or in a compilation vs. going through their albums. This is their last album that apparently was released after they broke up. I had only heard Girlfriend in a Coma off this album. Floored by a few songs like Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before and Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. Overall, I mean what can you say about the power of Morrissey's voice when you need to feel something?

Every track sounded the same. Morrisey's vocals sounded the same throughout the entire album. The only song that stood out to me was "unhappy birthday" but overall the whole thing was kind of boring and pretentious.

Bit sad again

The Smiths were never my favorite. I know some people get really obsessed with them, but personally… meh.

I don't hate this like some really do, but I don't love or really even like it either.

gay ghost trapped in a well

it's so good' i love it

Well that was definitely NOT what I was expecting, in a good way. I was expecting more depressing sounding songs, and while the lyrics were not particularly happy (who needs metaphors?), the instrumentation was upbeat and kept me interested the whole time 3.5/5

Odd album, never lives up to the start after A Rush and a Push but theres no shite either, classic weird The Smiths for the most part

Sounds like the 80s which means it sounds good

Another Smiths album and another enjoyable listen. Possibly the weakest for me in comparison but that isn’t a sleight.

Morrissey being a POS non withstanding, his singing is quite monotonous and frankly boring. Feels very repetitive and I checked out after the first few songs. Hence my saved songs are from the first half,, Saved tracks: Death of a Disco Dancer, Girlfriend in a Coma

Learned a bit about it.. not exactly my cup of tea..

Quality 80s depressed indie

listening while writing discussion part of thesis post midnight, it's saturday calm vibes, good, spotify keeps running through it completely (maybe 2 times, background noise i guess) and starts over with other smith songs directly after, never listened to any of this album prior to this first album recced to me by this site

For The Smiths, I found Strangeways, Here We Come oddly likeable. That's still a low ceiling because I don't like them much at all but this was pretty good and gets a 3.

Not as good as The Queen is Dead. Has a highpoint in the middle (Girlfriend in a Coma / Stop Me / Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me), but other than that it mostly lacks the emotional punch and the energy of the previous album. 3/5.

Man’s so depressed

Never really liked em

More Morrissey. Not bad though I suppose.

Apparently this is their best album? There’s some good tracks but I don’t think it’s their best. Pretty standard jangle pop/new wave that The Smiths are known for. Morrissey is still an arse.

Decent mopey dopey whiney stuff from morrissey again

very bri-ish

Morrissey has turned into an idiotic, whiny racist (or maybe he always was), so fuck him. I will rate this one just based on the music and since I always really enjoyed The Smiths and the band's instrumentation. Overall, this album is just OK. The Smiths were a great band but this just feels like they're going through the motions a bit and not really pushing themselves. I was really surprised to read that both Morrissey and Johnny Marr felt that this was their best album. Only had a few standout tracks in my opinion and the rest could kind of happen in the background without me really noticing. Standout Tracks: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, Girlfriend In a Coma, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, Paint a Vulgar Picture

This might be the least objectionable The Smiths album.

The most musically lush of the 3 albums but I'm not sure the songs hold up as much. It is however pretty good (ignoring the fact that Mozzer is a twat).
