Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Pretty Erskine fare.

Marvin's vocal chops are undeniable and the other artists pull their weight as well. I especially enjoy the percussion throughout this album. However, there's too much filler on this and it sludges along at points. Funky break-up albums should mirror breakups in general; keep it short and sweet babyyy 🌟🌟

It was okay…kinda of depressing

I'm sure it's fine, but RnB/soul has never appealed to me.

I like to read about an album and its history especially if I'm hearing it for the first time; for this one specifically I wanted to understand *why* it's considered a top 1001 album because to me ... it's dull. I love a good Marvin Gaye song and definitely am a fan of a lot of 70s soul music, but this seems an hour-long compilation of ...meh. Mid-tempo songs that sort of blend with one another - lukewarm vocals without a ton of passion (oddly, considering the topic)... there's absolutely nothing terrible here but it feels more like something I'd hear playing in the background of a slow-moving old street drama starring a young Gene Hackman. Additionally, the "reason" this is now a highly-regarded album is in fact largely *because of* the awkwardness of the lyrics and subject matter. Essentially the album is a document about MG's divorce, starting from the weird and not-convincing opening track of "Here My Dear" where he is almost literally giving us the verbal version of a final "I'm sorry this happened to us" letter. Even as someone who often ignores lyrics, I can't help but notice these and not in a good way. One highlight I will note is "Anger" which would probably stand out more on a more varied album. "Is That Enough" shows great promise with a slow funky groove but unfortunately just drags on a bit too long. Hard pass on this one, I'll give it a disappointed 2 and move to other/better Marvin.

Fine background music. Not more than that for me.

A go to for me if I'm in the mood for some hows your father.....Marvin never fails to get my My better half hot in the loins!

Production: 7/20 Songwriting: 5/20 Innovation: 9/20 Presence of pure bangers: 5/20 Emotional response: 2/20 = 29 Yeah not a fan of this one sorry Marvin.

I'm guessing this isn't one his better albums. I found this quite boring and forgettable

Boring

sex music sex music very funky tho

I expected this album to impregnate my computer... but instead it kind of made my computer depressed about Marvin Gaye's divorce. I got halfway through and it's the same song on repeat. An ok song. But the same fucking song.

Me and the 5 other people that hear this record. I have a question for god WHY?

Really love this album!

Love Motown Marvin and I understand this album is a reflection of the era being the late 70's. His vocals are amazing as always and there are a couple of decent tracks but all in all not my favorite sound of his.

An okay album, just not to my taste.

Funky Marvin Gaye. All new songs to me. Not my favorite, though.

just not for me

This album was alright. It didn't resonate with me as strongly as some of his other work, unfortunately. I'm not sure I'd recognize it if I heard it on the jukebox, and I probably wouldn't reach for it otherwise. 2 stars.

Nope. Not a fan. I like the songs of his that I already know, but apparently not this album.

Boring

I got through four tracks but then couldn't stand any more, had to rip my earbuds out in rage. Horrible.

i expected more

Gah, this is just too much and it's soooo looooong. Not sure if I can make it through this whole album. He just goes on and on. Currently yawning at 11a.m.... I know his voice it amazing, but the lyrics are just so doofy.

What’s worse than an angry self-pitying jerk giving you advice on how to behave? An album by the same jerk putting his advice to boring music.

Mindbogglingly boring album of falsetto whining.

He has a very smooth voice but this is so damn boring.

Just kind of a bummer album. This album got really old and no track really stood out. 1.5/5

1. He was definitely under the influence when making this track. Good smooth soul. 2. Lyrically a story of falling in and out of love and missing someone, liked the key changes in the middle. 3. Zooming in on the worst parts of the relationship - funkier, and groovier vibe. Like the saxophone, does a few different things with his vocal compared to the first two. Like the melody for this one. Shows a lot more passion and emotion on this track, you can feel he's missing the person. 4. Like the message - the aftermath of anger makes it not worth it. Funky, liked the first half the most. The beat and the guitar riff are the best part of the song. 5. This was kinda funny, basically talking about how he wasn't the confident self-assured man he made himself out to be. Couldn't seem to handle the relationship or his partner? This is more laid back, late night, groove. Could see this being played whilst driving at night. Sax solo is 👌🏽. 6. Starting the song - this type of soul is not my preference, I find it quite boring and dull. Appreciate the lyrics. Vocals are great. 7. This is better than the last track. Lyrics??? Definitely understand the title. The rest of the album from here was not very impressive, I found it all blended into one and I was not enjoying it. Track 11 - I wanted to like, but it was actually quite dull and forgetful. He is very much a legend, but this album is not for me. Top songs: Anger Is that enough When did you stop loving me... rating - 1/5

i cant call it bad, but its really boring

Not my sort of thing.

I didn't like the other Marvin Gaye album, this one is worse.

I don't mind giving a messy album a high rating as long as it's interesting this isn't interesting. critics got it right the first time.

No, not for me. Even my wife said it was getting too much.

Dull soppy bollox.

Dull, not for me

I hated everything about this album. i think I just hate marvin gaye

This was really boring. I spent more time on it than I should have. I kept forgetting I was listening to this, and had to go back. It wasn’t worth it.

"I'm sad about my divorce" = meh. "I'm mad about my divorce" = meh. "I'm sad about my divorce, and I'm mad about my divorce, and SOMEDAY I'LL HAVE SEX ON PLUTO" = yes. Very yes.

nope. nothing particularly wrong with this except it's sappy and lacks any depth

I didn't like it much

All sounded very similar songs to me.

Surely there must be a better offering by Marvin Gaye than this?

Why make this record, my Dear? No idea, my Dear. Forgotten about pretty quickly, my Dear? Yes, My Dear. Will I play it again? No, my Dear.

Boring.

Brother brother, this ain’t so good

not 4 me

I'm sorry but what the fuck is "I Met A Little Girl"?

yeah - no my favorite from Marvin. Just sounds like it's missing something.

Nope. Just some run of the mill soul / R&B record. Want a classic divorce album? Go for Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks"

Musicians often use their work to express their feelings, grievances, fears, mourning, hate; you name it. But to produce a whole f*ng double album is so much over the top, it's disgusting.

preachy

Awful.

A quel moment dans la vie tu fais "Wouhh!" après t'être demandé "when did I stop lovin' you" ?

I'ts not my cup of tea. Even mwith nice harmonies here and there, I have the impression that thes osnga are a continuois moaning with sometimes multiples voices. Get a room! More seriously, I love "I heard it through the grapvines" from MG, but it seems he's the reason why we have now generatuon of R&B moaning too. So just personal taste. It's a 1 for me.

in 2 words : so boring !

I laughed a lot just by listening the intro and the following song since it is a hell of a cliché. If I understand correctly, the guy divorces and releases a 14-track emotional outlet. This isn’t exactly what I like the most from Marvin, but there’s some kind of emotion if you relate to Marvin’s romantic troubles and If you’re not already tired of hearing the word “love” every ten seconds. It’s vaguely suitable as a soundtrack for sex. Yes, there are few good grooves, but this album mainly left me with a sense of fatigue after so much sentimental outpouring

This music is nothing but creepy!!!!!

I couldn’t get through this one. Just something about talking about a “little girl” in a sexy way and complaining that your woman is cheating on you and clearly he’s a lothario, I’m over it.

I can see why some old women would love this guy. But I found the songs so similar I got bored and I didn’t even finish the albums, oops. But I was jamming along every now and then. They were all just songs about love and heartbreak

The musical equivalent of going to the pub expecting to have a good time with friends and instead you end up listening to one of your mates go on about his messy divorce all night.

Boring & Samey

So far all I hear is the worst of Philly Soul: elevator music backing some dude who is whining about how his "woman done me wrong." There's something so sappy in the vocals you can totally understand why she found someone better. It's very hard to stay awake through one side of this album so I've started skipping. Each song is the same as the last. I believe that What's Going On is highly overrated, basically one good song repeated. This doesn't even have one good song. It belongs on a lesser-known list:1001 different ways to go to sleep.

Very much background music here. Pretty dull.

1. dear - 1 2. girl - 1 3. loving - 1.5 4. anger - 1 5. enough - 1 6. love - 1 7. time - 1 8. zparrouu - 1 9. anna - 1 10. loving you - 1.5 11. zpace - 1 12. cozt - 1 13. again - 1 14. loving - 1.5

Over 300 albums in and I see that Marvin Gaye is recorded as the only controversial artist I have by the 1001 Gods. 5 stars for What’s Going On but only 1 for Let’s Get It On. Retrospectively I think I was a bit harsh with Let’s Get It On having appeared early on before I got a fair and constant marking system clear in my head. More so now that this album appeared today. Compared to Let’s Get It On this album would go into negative rating territory if there was such a thing. I don’t doubt at all the talent Marvin Gaye had but this album to me is same old same old and sent me to sleep. The only good thing about it is that it reminded me to listen again to What’s Going On and wonder why I gave that 5 stars. And I also wonder by giving this a 1 Marvin will no longer be controversial to me. In my head he never was but I don’t argue with the 1001 Gods. 1/5 6/11/24

Boring, self indulgent, cheesy, and good god I dislike that saxophone. I understand he was going through some stuff so I don't blame him. I blame the editors for making me listen to it

This one was a bit of a chore tbh. Interesting concept and very solid musically, but the lyrics are so un poetic and on the nose that the whole album is cringe worthy. I feel like there must have been a better way to express these feelings, Mr. Gaye. In no way is this essential listening.

Respectfull 3 star saanut herra minulta ennen.. tänään otetaan avg alas..

Could not get past the first track. Can't do it

Disappointed

I can see why it was not popular when it first came out. It comes across as the whinings of a bitter, rejected lover.

I guess i don’t like the genre

WTF. This is laughable.

Do I really need to listen to 8-minute songs about divorce? Answer: No.

If this is one of Marvin's best, I don't want to hear the worst. I love Marvin's voice, but I found this quite bland and a bit drawn out, not just the fact that it is a double album, but also the songs themselves. If I had to sum it up, I'd say self-indulgent soft soul. I skipped a few tracks to get to A Funky Space Reincarnation. With that title it *couldn't* disappoint. Right? Wrong, sadly.

I skipped through this. Didn't enjoy the synth horn sounds

boooooringgggg

Good grief, what a boring album.

Didn’t enjoy this one

Didn’t listen to this, not a fan of these love songs

Painful is the word I would use, not his divorce, but the tracks on this album. This album is so boring and long, it goes on forever. He's singing about paying child support on one of them...I just couldn't care less.

i can't believe that I wasted 1 hour and 13 minutes of my life hearing a guy rant about his divorce...

this instilled nothing but boredom.

Doesn't add to anything he did earlier. Marvin did some amazing music and this is like excessive noodlings and musing centred on his ex-wife. I don't understand how these albums get added to the list. It's just irrelevant and unnecessary.

I find it rather unjust for me to have to pass judgement on an album that’s so far away from my playing field. But given that’s what we’re here for today, I’ll just say the sound is exactly what, I’m led to believe, provided for many an old porn soundtrack.

Would be 2* due to it being really quite depressing and boring to listen to, but minus one star for being so long too.

This was awful. If the 70s had porn in the 'popular with women' category, this would be the soundtrack.

Really couldn't finish this one. I found it so grating and I can't stand the spoken bits.

mehhh soo slow and boring

Actually garbage

Did not enjoy - skipped on before completing

Rubbish

BAH.

Another album I wanted to like but right from the start it's him complaining about his ex wife via song? Not very interesting or refined in any way. First half of the album I did not like at all, 2nd half not much better some decent grooves but I was happy when it was over

fan vad tråkigt

Pretty funky
