Reviews (page 13 of 14)
Indie rock album - All the songs are well made but very typical for the genre and fairly uninspired. There are a lot of interesting modulations and tempo / mood changes but I'm not a fan of a lot of them. Pros: I like the genre, the drums are tight, the mixing and effects are really great, interesting tempo changes and modulations Cons: I'm not a fan of a lot of the changes, songs typical of the genre, very samey, all predictable Songs I liked: Take Me Out (really well known song - I love the beginning but not so much the rest) Auf Achse (I like the instrumentation and arrangement a lot) Come on Home (Nice chords, cool instrumentation, pretty ending) 2/5 - Well made, nothing unpredictable or stand out
boring and repetitive imo, but in fairness its not really my preferred genre or style. ‘take me out’ is a classic but after that, nothing stuck out to me. dnf.
Lyrics too repetitive. I can at least hear some Beatles and British 80s rock. But just annoying otherwise.
this music makes me feel exactly nothing
Princip was right. Shoot him.
Pretty cool, nothing I'm itching to hear again but overall a nice album
Flashbacks to SingStar. That's where this album lives in my memory, and revisiting it doesn't change the address much. The reputation is bigger than the content. A lot of it sounds the same, doesn't stay, and within songs it's repetitive and predictable. There's also something about the delivery — the singing especially — that reads as arrogant. Not necessarily intentionally, but it sounds like a band that thinks it's very cool while making music that is, fundamentally, quite simple. If the attitude matched the reality — "hey, we make fun dance music, enjoy" — I'd probably like them more. The gap between the pose and the product is the problem. "Take Me Out" is the obvious standout, and it earns it, repetitive as it is. But the real highlight is "Darts of Pleasure," specifically the moment it switches to: "Ich heiße Superfantastisch, ich trinke Schampus mit Lachsfisch." For about thirty seconds the whole cool-guy act collapses into pure absurdity, and the album is much better for it. More of that, please. 2/5.
Snoozefest. Boring mid-2000s polished indie rock.
Take Me Out is good, the rest is kinda bland.
Not many tracks that held my interest for long
Had know idea Take Me Out was this guy. Thought it was one of the more well known new wavy, alt-Indy outfits. No matter, it’s not for me. Everything about it says cheap Chinese knock-off. No sale.
Has a couple strong songs, besides that just an average pop album
2/5. En bra låt egentligen, inte så mycket för resten tbh.
not that bad tbh. cool uncle music. reminds me of an Australian unc bbq function where their all grilling sausages and drinking beer or whatever alcohol. 3 are probably smoking. oh and they play golf. reminds me of the colour brown and leather. not my cup of tea but its still good
they sure do love repeating the same line ten times in a row
2.5
Just poppy radio play
rock surf no me llega a convencer hay dos canciones que conozco y estaban buenas pero no me gustó el disco
How can a band so annoying make something as good at Take Me Out
Gris.
3/31/26. Never heard the full album before but have heard Take Me Out countless times. It's an OK album to my ears, fits squarely into the 2000s indie scene but not a lot of memorable tracks. Could listen to again but for now, just wasn't big into it.
Not for me I guess. Only so many songs in a row that I can listen to that same freaking drum beat. Even though this is technically indie or art rock or whatever, it just feels like pop to me. Simple, repetitive, decent. Not a bad listen, just not an inspired one. Fave tracks: - Jacqueline - Take Me Out - Cheating On You - Darts Of Pleasure - 40'
It's a good album—great '00s-style rock—but after the halfway point it starts to feel a bit repetitive. I liked the first few tracks, but the rest dragged on a bit.
Wasn't the biggest fan of it, nothing really stood out here for me as really memorable.
normal, buen album de un hit aunque no lo considero tan importante para escuchar antes de morir.
I don't hate it, but I don't like it either. Jaqueline was a good starter, started chill but then it exploded and I liked it. But as it went on there was nothing really impressive to highlight. I liked: Take Me Out (Guitar Hero gem), Auf Achse and Darts Of Pleasure.
I heard a little David Byrne in there but I didn’t much like the songwriting or production. They used a tinny megaphone-style filter over a lot of the vocals which I found kind of annoying.
I once saw Krist Novoselic of Nirvana on a book tour, probably around 2004. I mostly recall that he said he wanted to start a band called Gavrillo Princip. This album is why. Despite finding "Take Me Out" to be the definition of rich white millennium privilege rock, I did come into this willing to be surprised, and I almost was when "Jacqueline" opened as an introspective, soft number. But honestly I find this sort of thing banal. Don't get me wrong, I love my share of big dumb albums, but the self-seriousness is too much for this sort of thing. It's like someone formed a band out of "and now's the time on Sprockets when we dance," without understanding that it was a send up, or even understanding the art snobbery that was being sent up. Nothing feels earnest or honest, but it sure feels like they want us to think it is. 2* mostly because I feel 1* should mean something, but i really didnt enjoy thos experience. "Take Me Out" is the best track here.
Take me out is a great song, it’s just a pity that all the others sound like poor imitations of it! Oh yeah and the singers voice is a bit annoying.
I recognized “Take Me Out@ and I do like that song but the rest did not feel special to me, it wasn’t bad but it didn’t stick with me
Drab and uninspired dreck with the most obnoxious traits of 2000s indie rock amplified by 100.
Struggling to find stuff to say about this album, it's just very ok.
“Is ‘Float On’ on this album?” I said to myself, unintentionally insulting the whole chipper indie scene.
"Take Me Out" makes me a little nostalgic for playing Guitar Hero in high school. The rest of the album is a 'meh' from me. It's not bad; it's just not to my personal taste. I could work to it as background music, but I can't see myself seeking it out.
I never really liked this band, and truthfully I'm still not that into it whatsoever lol
Temazo super conocido de ellos, el resto de temas, parecen buenos, pero con el paso de los segundos se desinflan o me despisto o hay algo que meeeeg....
Not timeless at all, very much of a time. And unfortunately even then I was not that into them. Understand why this is here though...
too indy
Oooof... all I knew of Franz Ferdinand was Take Me Out, and I finished this album thinking it's all I really needed to know.
Repetitive. Says matinee four times please ryeme with something else. Songwriting is horrible. GERMAN?
Muy aburrido. Envejeció muy mal.
not interested that much
eh lyssnade inte så noga ☠️👁️👁️ men helt okej i guess, den här reviewen suger HAHA. de här är fake betyg 5/10
I remember this album being all the rage when it came out. Meh.
These guy seem to be really popular. I don't get it. I do like a couple from them but not much else.
Some songs started to grow on me after a few listens. Not my general vibe however.
kinda boring, all songs sound the same
Not bad, but boring
I saw them as a support band and they were confident and full of energy, considering they were pretty much unknown at the time. I don’t think this has aged particularly well as what might have been exciting at the time is a bit beige now.
Might have been groundbreaking at the time but somehow does not stand the test of time. Or maybe I am less nostalgic about it than other indie-rock of the time.
I remember hearing the name Franz Ferdinand a lot 20 years ago, but I didn't recognize any of the songs... and I wonder why this album is on the 1001 list. It's not bad musics, but I didn't find it catchy or engaging or skillfully played. Just indie rock. Someone else enlighten me.
The early 00s loved this major label alt dreck. This sounds very familiar, either it wears its influences on its sleeve or everything from this time sounds similar to me. (I’m guessing the latter) Starts off with a surprisingly pleasant Jonathan Richman impression, then goes into an endless string of angular dancy alt rock that was everywhere at the time. I was never the audience for this and nothing has changed. And if I never hear Take Me Out again, I’d be OK with that.
god i wish alex would shut up. the rest of the band is great. malaise, empty streets, neon
banda escocesa de Indie Rock tell her tonight take me out cheating on you come on home
Meh. Very 2000s shout-sing rock with a thumping beat. A couple of good songs but overall just not for me. - Heard before? A song or two. - Will I listen again? No. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? No. Notable songs: Take Me Out, Dark of the Matinee, 40 Degrees
I dislike it personally. Take me out is alright but that's about it
Scottish derivative power post-punkish indie rock with nice abrasive and high-tuned guitars, but not much else to show.
Meh. Musically good and varied. More lively musically than most of the British indie pop bands of that day. Borrows heavily from Bowie’s art rock style. But I really can’t take that lyrical and vocal styling. Too whiny and self absorbed. A 2.
Personally felt like a mix of muse and artic monkeys I know they definitely have bangers in their albums but I'm not sure I care enough to go through each one to find each individual song I like
Sounds very well calculated.
i listened to half of it - it is good but i found it a bit repetitive at times so it was hard to just hear it the full way through.
Pants Turd-wee-bland
Much more boring than I remembered. It's one of the better 2000s indie albums but I just want to throw every Fender Telecaster in existence onto a ritual pyre tbh.
Only listened to a couple songs out of this album before the lackluster music and repetitive lyrics got to me. Maybe I'll try another listen some other time, but I doubt it.
★★½
the one song is the only one i know for a reason 😬
The energy really peaks with Take Me Out, after that it's all downhill. Standout Tracks: Take Me Out, Jacqueline
Eh, not my thing.
I tried liking this back in 2004 when Take Me Out was everywhere. It never really caught for me and that continues to this day. They are some interesting songs - Matinee, This Fire - but still lacking staying power. If it comes on I won’t change it. But I won’t seek it out either. 2/5
there's some really neat stuff here! the rest of it all sounds like the same song though
Boring
Better than I thought but still didnt love it.
Intre4sant, Skurile musik die sinn und Unverstand hat, nicht einirdnerbar. Würde ich hören um was... nun ja
Very forgettable album, this album makes me feel absolutely nothing. I wasn’t looking forward to listening to it as I don’t like the main song Take Me Out, and it was confirmed by the other songs on the album too. It is not bad music necessarily, but I have no idea how this made it to the 1001 albums to listen list.
Decent but not usually my kind of jam - a little too harsh for me
Take Me Out is a modern classic. Matinee is good. The rest of the album varied between tolerable and outright annoying.
Couple of really great songs but too much meh.
A couple of really great and fun songs but suffers from too much samey-ness. I appreciate the DIY vibe of the production and the highlights really shine, but by the time you get to the end of the album it's all a bit bland
#174/1001. Ok, se we all probably know Take me out. Let's see if rest of the album sounds the same. Well it does and songs are worse. Too many of these end up here, although this isn't really bad - just one ear in other ear out stuff.
Hasn’t held up as well as I hoped - while there are a lot of nostalgic and fun moments it doesn’t really hold together well as a complete album
Enjoyable listen, but not among my favorites.
Props to the bass player, but the lyrical repetition in all the choruses grows tedious real fast.
It's all right, but not a go-to album of mine or anything. Not massively inventive in and of itself, but angular and quirky enough at the time to carve out its own little alternative pop niche for a while. The album hasn't aged particularly well, but then nor has it degraded into full-on indie landfill embarassment like so many of their peers. Like I said, it's just kind of all right, and they always seemed like nice enough, humble chaps.
Jangly 00’s rock. Not that bad, but got very samey after 15 minutes or so. Played well, produced well. Just not overly interesting. Not essential to hear before you die.
Franz Ferdinand is a good band, just a little generic in the context of this list. After my past two albums, Black Sabbath and Fats Domino, Franz Ferdinand just isn’t on the same level. Perfectly fine 00’s alt rock, but nothing groundbreaking… I’d rather listen to Television… 4/10 Favorite tracks- “This Fire” “Darts of Pleasure”
Ehhhhh
One or two bright spots, but repetitive and derivative.
Yawn. Kind of a bore. Yes I can spot the influences, but they don't really bring anything new to the table.
Honestly a bit of a let-down; I had only really known their big single from this record and was a bit more familiar with the next record of theirs. There's a muscle and energy here that is undeniable but the songwriting is very same-same, it feels like one long forty-minute song.
Rather listen to the strokes, keane, something else.
Good enough debut album, shame the band didn't do anything significant after. Most songs are middle of the pack and nothing special, other than Take Me Out.
Enjoyable singles but always felt a bit hollow
Just utterly pointless Fav track: Take Me Out I guess
4/10. Solo me gusta "Take me out". El resto da un perezón del 15.
I’ve only heard Take Me Out from this album before. Turns out it’s the only one I really like. 2.5 stars.
only one well known song - probably for a reason
Hiten Take me out är ändå svängig, får jag medge. Även Dark of the matinee. Men annars… nej, rätt stelt och poänglöst.
I mean, it’s interesting as a footnote in 00s indie/dancepunk culture and there is the single, of course, but aside from wishing I was a size 28 and had a great tailor this had no impact on me whatsoever.
Was not my thing when it came out. It remains so now.
4/10 Favorite: Take Me Out
Competantly executed indie rock from the finger pointing dance Eeading / Leeds massive. They can certainly write catchy songs. They do the genre well. Just happens that I don't enjoy this genre much at all. A nice memory was an old roomate absolutely bopping to this. A not so nice memory was aggressive lads with bad haircuts in the Gloucester on Tuesday nights.
today i learned the term “landfill indie.”
This album seems like it would be good but something is not good about it. There’s some cool grooves for the most part but they get stale quick take me out is the best song on it which is all right. I remember when Modest Mouse had float on out and take me out was also a hit during that time and both songs have similar vibes and I just remember thinking damn the smile song is so much better. I don’t think that anyone needs to listen to this album before they die that’s that’s just my take
Oh boy. My memories are fonder than the reality and they arent really that sparkling to begin with. songs scatter from annoying, and catchy, and kinda fun, to just fucking annoying. 2.
Nothing groundbreaking here just a short collection of punchy pop rock tracks.
Was excited to hear the rest of these songs since I like their hit but was not impressed. Kept looking for skip forward to see if the next one would satisfy and it just didn't.
Not my taste
2 good songs - Take Me Out and This Fire. That's it. Everything else is a struggle to listen to.
Nothing special
There really is only one decent song on this album, and that's Take Me Out. The rest is pretty bland.
2.18
Besides Take Me Out, it’s pretty forgettable.
قيمه ثنين
not really my type...
aside from take me out this is a forgettable album
Not a fan
Only one decent track
Don’t know about that one… it’s too pop-y for me
This is #day339 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… I've never liked this band. I get why they were a big deal in the 2000s indie/post-punk revival, but they never did anything for me. Do you need to hear this before you die? Put on Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not instead. That record captures everything about early '00s UK indie rock in a way this one doesn't. Also, and I won't pretend this doesn't matter, this is one of those bands that openly fetishize Russian culture while separating "the people" from their "mad leadership." The truth is, the whole country is a landfill. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day340.
Some great tracks - but not as coherent of an album as an initial listening promises.
Dosadni su mi oni, ima par dobrih trenutaka gdje me podsjećaju na stari Muse, te pjesme su mi ok, ali sve u svemu stalno zvuči isto i ravno i nezanimljivo. 2/5, 3/10
Take Me Out is great.
A very okay album. Nothing that special since their just the UK Strokes. Take Me Out became a huge hit for the 2000s indie rock era for some reason. The Strokes are better then this copy band and FF have not improved upon this record.
2 - it was fine but nothing hooked me
Another okay album. I’m underwhelmed by this list. This is a one-hit wonder.
This band has always felt like filler music to me? Like, this sort of thing was popular in this era and so this group was shoved in the spotlight. Whether it was their time or they were milked by the machine or both I cannot say that I enjoy what they make.
The Strokes and The Hives had a baby and named him Franz.
First listen, I was hoping for maybe something a little more. Realized it sounds like a bunch of other bands from that era. Nothing really trail-blazing or original. Some catchy pop in there. 2nd time through ....felt the same as the first.
Not a fan of Scottish Cardigans.
as the very wise dude from wallows/13 reasons why once said: “she was only 17.. why are girls in songs always 17?” i didn’t know these guys r scottish from the like 2 songs of theirs that get radio play! now aside from the fun accents and cliche opening lines etc, i do suppose they have some pretty catchy bass lines and fun guitar riffs, but overall i don’t think i actually enjoyed this very much or at all tbh. it’s like a cross between early arctic monkeys and the strokes, and idk if it’s just because i’m in a bad mood because there’s no ac in the office or because i’m already overly emotionally attached to the aforementioned bands or what. perhaps i revisit this one again when i’m not being boiled alive, but it’s a no from me today dawg. p.s. the og franz ferdinand was assassinated in my city so it’s only fitting that i assassinate them in my 1001 albums ratings
Apart from the singles is much if a muchness , just indie pop
Could’ve had another strokes album but instead we got this. Aright band with one great song. Come on Home was good too. Most of this album reads like bad high school relationship drama, real lame. Feeling a mid 2/5 on this, disappointing
Escuché solo los primeros tres temas. Muy lindo pero ya no tengo 15 años.
Forgettable
Irritating. Annoying. Not good.
Remembered this as good, it is fine
Nicht schlecht, ziemlich Indie aber dann auch wieder halt langatmig
After 3 songs, I thought maybe I misjudged this band back in the day. Nope.
I mean it’s got an early aughts rock cool factor, but I just don’t think this is that good
Inoffensive background music
It's ok but not really my jam.
Litt kjedelig
It's an okay album maybe just not my thing.
Take me out is good. I just did not enjoy the rest of the album.
It's a good song but a bit much to play it 11 times in a row.
Meh
Have listened a few times over the years. Just not my thing
..
Ei omia suosikkeja. Soundi ihan ok, mutta ei tätä levyllistä jaksa. Ei siis millään.
Itse en ole genren suurin fani. Pari tuttua rallia kylläkin. Menee vähän rämpyttelyn puolelle.
I remember this sounding quite OK at the time it was released. Now it just irritates me. This post punk revival did bring to light few decent bands like Editors and Interpol, but Franz Ferdinand's indie disco already feels quite outdated.
Feels like repeat. At release time of this album I would have given more starts but now this just feels like same old same old.
Maybe those few songs from this album were played so much on the radio back in the day that it completely killed my desire to listen to Franz Ferdinand at all. So yeah, this one’s not my cup of tea.
I already feel I've listened to this album as part of this project, many times. Again, it's not a bad album, just more of the same. I get nothing out of this type of music, except maybe a tinge of boredom.
Is this a good album or did they just blow up with a massive hit that sounds like a straight rip off of Modest Mouse? I honestly don't know the answer to that question. Either way, I doubt this is essential or something that you must hear before you die.
Not my jam
only "take me out" is worth a listen, the rest is indy landfill
Bit of a one hit album, odd inclusion
Very meh, much blah. Better than the Killers, though. Would not revisit, but not awful.
Nostalgia doing most of the heavy lifting here. Mostly just repetitive noise with an affected voice. Some bops though. Take Me Out will never not get me to a dancefloor.
Another darling of the early oughts post punk revival indie rock. It’s funny to review something like this with historical perspective. I mean, it’s fine? Not earth shattering, just nice music. I have to say that I was aware of Franz Ferdinand when they broke out but I didn’t really like them and their contemporaries (I mean some did stand out, like The Strokes or Bloc Party). It’s all pretty derivative and not very interesting. Dunno, if you like this then go listen to Mission of Burma or Wire or something. Two stars.
2+
Pretty one dimensional sound and flow wise. Tight group good sound.
love these vibes and styles I LOVE 'Take Me Out', knew it before but I really do love that song and rarely skip it, which says a lot The others are all a little too 'alt' for me, I think, a little too unconventional It's kinda giving Billy Joel gone rogue...gone indie rock
I recall the hype surrounding the release of this album. Intrigued, I decided to buy it to hear the buzz. However, I was not particularly impressed at the time, and my opinion remains unchanged. Franz Ferdinand's blend of quasi-new wave and rock, characterized by its jangly and jerky guitar riffs, is largely unremarkable and frequently comes across as a lackluster effort to embody a snarky hipster vibe. Aside from "Dark of the Matinee," the remaining tracks fail to leave any lasting impression. Overall, it is simply loud(ish), yet boring.
Not memorable honestly
It's kinda all the same song
It’s a real bummer to be faced with music from my youth and reckon with the idea that I am not able to say to snot-nosed youths, “Ya know, back in my day…” Most of the cool stuff was already a photocopy of a photocopy of the end of cool stuff, and that stinks.
made me very sleepy
für rock guet gmacht sowiit ich gsehne, die musig gfallt mer eifach nedeso wenn's ned queen isch xd
Similar to the Killer's, there isn't anything bad here but by the end I'm bored 2/5
So, Take Me Out is an all-time banger. Would probably make a list of best tracks of the 00s, though I'd have to think about it. I was happy to see the album listed for today: "Oh I love that song, but have never listened to the album. Wonder how the rest is" And, uh, Jacqueline is good too. Darts of pleasure has a memorable last 20 seconds. But the rest of this album leaves much to be desired. And as I understand, we're rating albums not the best song on each album. And I doubt I'd ever listen to the album again.
Another one that’s not for me. I thought the first bit of the first song was very theatrical and I loved the direction it was headed but then once all of the instrumentation came in it wasn’t what I had hoped.
Might me a solid Indy act, but I coulnd't bring myself to care about any of these songs. 2/5
2,5
I dismissed Franz Ferdinand after hearing "Take Me Out" when they debuted. I was not a fan of alt-rock's early 2000's period and deemed it too contrived to be of any interest. Now, as a more experienced listener, I can see Franz Ferdinand as a continuation of post-punk, though, seemingly, a post-punk meant for the dance floor? The songs are bouncy, and, if given the chance, would lend themselves well to a discotheque. Sadly, this does tend to leave the lyrics repetitive or lacking much depth. At times they sound extremely similar to alt-contemporaries, the Killers, sometimes the Hives (most of the album), and sometimes the Doors ("This Fire"). Franz Ferdinand come so close to touching brilliance a few times, but never quite get there, making for a disappointing listen, despite their willingness to experiment withe different sounds. Not for me, not essential, but a good snapshot of what was happening in alt-rock in 2004.
Felt like a shitt(ish) version of some good music. Like someone was doing their own versions of good music, but not very well… I think? Dont think I liked it much, but I kind of wanted to. Was like a group of lads going ‘shall we make music that will get us on the next fifa game?’ I think? Okay. Take Me Out just started, didnt realised this was on here. They actually did do the Fifa thing, and very well. Elite Snobs song for 18 year old Caesar to neck of with 3 different birds to. Bravo Franz. The rest get very ‘meh’ again. I also hate when an album is just the title of the artist. Was a 2.5, now solid 2.
boring apathetic shlock void of melody or any interesting moments. feels like listening to the hum of a refrigerator for an hour.
Mediocre. Uninterested
Blir ganska repetitivt
It’s an ok album
Other than Take Me Out, I didn't really enjoy any other song.
"Michael" is a good song, but otherwise I would like to never hear the rock band "Franz Ferdinand" ever again
Was familiar with the band in name only and not just because I'm an old Austrian scholar, but have never explicitly listened. And the description alone is probably something I shouldn't read before listening because going in I have a bad attitude about this - comparisons on Apple Music to Arctic Monkeys and Libertines are aggravating me in advance. Is that any way to live life? (Q: *being aggravated* or *listening to shitty music* ? hmmm...) Ok even just with track one I'll give them that they're immediately better than those 2 but I can't help but perhaps lazily lump them in with so many of these early 2000s-debut bands with the heavily distorted and processed vocals. It's not *as* bad here but it's hard to get around sometimes. Often. Wait I know this song Take Me Out - of course. It's all ok I guess. There's a little bit of song variety in ... the sameness. It's just all so goddamn forgettable - there's no soul at all in/with this band, with a lot (most?) of these early century landfill indie bands. Not R&B type soul, but this music just sounds so manufactured. Calculated. Hard to put my finger on it but also I don't really give a shit - oddly I don't hate it but also I'm not connecting with it at all. Idk - maybe I'm just ancient and don't like new rock music anymore? The ArchDuke was shot over a century ago now, and these bunions seem to hurt more every day... 5/10 2.5 stars. Probably a 3 since if someone plays it at a party I'll not cringe but I'm still giving it a 2 so I don't actively look this up again.
Besides the standout tracks I found this album to be pretty bland indie haze, repetitive and not grabbing my attention.
Really struggled with this one. The songs are very ok but I couldn't help think that I'd rather be listening to anything else. This Fire and Take Me Out were my favourites.
Sounds like a lot of alt-rock bands from the early 2000s. Never cared much for it
Basic, straightforward. Not a lot going on with the lyrics. "Girl" is a much loved word in several of the songs. The album felt repetitive, and a little too punky and upbeat.
Rock, 2004 -> 2
Fairly boring to me. It wasn't bad, but there was nothing I heard that made me take notice - or want to re-listen.
I feel like this was a decent listening experience, and objectively I can understand why it’s good, but I just couldn’t connect with it meaningfully. My lower rating doesn’t really reflect a lack of quality I guess?
Too old and boring
singing voice(s) can be quite annoying. good songs: Jacqueline, Take me out, thats about it. 2/5
Oasis for art school dropouts
The Forever 21 of bands and albums. Not bad but not meant to last. By the time I reached the end of the album I had forgotten what the first half sounded like
I knew one song coming into this album, and it will probably be the only one I keep listening to. The album wasn't bad by any stretch but it was kind of repetitive. Most of the songs sounded very similarly, and it's one thing to have a style, it's another to only have one sound. I don't feel like this album made me appreciate music more than I dis before listening to it.
Habs im Hangout gesagt und sag es hier nochmal: "Take me out" n richtiger Banger, aber der Rest war weniger meins :/
Catchy, and honestly well written--great bass work, too. But I flat don't like this genre. The repetitive sound and obnoxious vocals don't do it for me, if I listen too long it will legit give me a headache. Far from the worst thing I've ever heard, but something I have no desire to return to. A beloved band, but what makes them special drives me in the other direction. (And that radio-filter vocal shit always sucks.) Favorite Song: Auf Achse
‘Take Me Out’ is a great single. Franz Ferdinand was another next big thing that didn’t emerge. And listening to this in retrospect it’s clear why. Like many songwriters FF has one great song. It has competent and even very good songs. But they don’t top ‘Take Me Out’. So they fade a bit from public consciousness. (They’re still around and doing well. But they’re not the superstars they were hyped to be. Maybe that’s how they want it too.) I suppose this gives us a sense of the rock scene in 2004. So I’ll give it 2.5. Rounded down because 3 felt too high. But boy Take Me Out is great.
Δεν θα ελεγα οτι εντυπωσιαστηκα ιδιαιτερα. Παντως η μουσικη ειναι καλη. Rating: C
Peppy instrumentals. Don’t enjoy the voice quality or ability. Too close to yelling over the instruments for me. Does nothing to recommend itself over every other garage band.
This is a surprising one for me. I enjoyed the singles but otherwise I'm disappointed. I thought I would enjoy it more considering it's been suggested to me but it just sounds too similar to other Indie-ish bands I've heard.
Kind of mental rock, not my cup of tea.
Generally unmemorable.
I have very fond memories of this album but it has not aged well to my ears. In fact I think this one of the worst mixed mainstream albums I have ever heard. So much clipping and popping.
Boring pop
Ok, don't love the style. 2.5
nah
1. jackeline - 1 2. tell her - 1 3. take me - 3.5 4. matinee - 2 5. auf - 2 6. cheating - 1 7. fire - 1 8. pleazure - 1 9. michael - 1 10. home - 1.5 11. 40 - 1
Okay- so basically a one dimensional bar band. If you paid a $20 cover charge and heard the set you may not leave, but you certainly wouldn’t hang around for the second set. It all sounds the same
Nah not a fan - I just don't get it
I remember when this came out and everyone loved it. It was a snooze fest 20 years on.
Never a massive fan of them but its not a terrible album. Its not the best either. Its listenable.
Take Me Out, Matinee, Darts of Pleasure were decent. Probably wouldn't listen again.
Nothing here stands out from all the other indie stuff that was coming out around the same time.
Groupe inconnu. =>2/5
Aside from "Take Me Out" there isn't really anything to write home about here.
Thought I'd like it more
Not terribly awful but not great either. I would be fine if some songs came up through the algorithm, probably wouldn't listen to the full album again as it was pretty forgettable.
Funny Recruitment Ad Song
This album is just incredibly boring. Every song sounds the same to me.
I remember this coming out back in the day, my taste then was much heavier music so I don't think I listened to anything but the singles. It has the feel of The Stokes, The Libertines that era of indie. I can't say I dislike or like this album it's more of a shrug of the shoulders it's alright. Stand out tracks are just what I know. Also it's not so much that they have a sound it's more that every track sounds very similar on this album. - Take me out - The dark of the matinee - Darts of pleasure - 40'
Wanted to like this - I love Take Me Out. But most sounded like a drunken band at open night mic. Not into it.
this doesn't appeal to me
Fairly monotonous, no doubting take me out is a bop though
may be not anymore
Not for me
I can see the appeal and influence, but it was hard for me to jam all the way through.
Two stars for Take Me Out. The rest sounded like knock off Strokes.
Songs from an American Eagle dressing room. Never been a fan of this style of indie (throw the Strokes in this bucket too). Strikes me as an odd inclusion on the list.
The one song holds up but the rest seems kind of weirdly formulaic and kind of whiny. Adios F Ferd! Maybe Ill catch you on the radio or on some throwback list at a bar.
meh
Я курочку люблю больше, чем индюшатину..
Take me outs a banger!
I like them. Compared to a few we've reviewed, this album doesn't feel revolutionary, and in that same frame of reference, they are very much one sound on this album. That being said, I would most likely listen to them out of the ones we've covered. Also, they put on a fun live show.
A big album during my university days. It's no exaggeration when I say that at one point a housemate of mine would wake up and hit play on this CD, every day, for about two months. I wasn't particularly taken by it then, nor am I finding a lot of juice now. The big tracks 'Take Me Out', 'The Dark of the Matinee' became such a part of the fabric of being young in the UK at the time as to be virtually inescapable. Twenty years on, they're okay. And that's what is so remarkable - that such a modest album had such a stranglehold on the zeitgeist. This thin-sounding indie, with hints here and there of dance and post-punk, is slightly exhausting listen, not due to its difficulty but its lack of any distinguishing feature. One of the tougher drives I ever made was a west-east bisection of Kansas - tough, because for hours I barely had to nudge the wheel, and the scenery was unending fields of industrially farmed crops. Don't underestimate the wearying potential of overwhelming blah. Did the guitarist try to do some East Bay Ray thing? Because he failed.
Meh
They were jammin
Some okay tunes, a bit (a lot) immature lyrically. "Angular" guitars and pushing the bass up in the mix on top of a disco-style drum groove does not make this anything like post-punk, as I've heard this band described. I'm thinking more Roxy Music than Gang of Four, too slick to truly be a garage band. The best songs are the most popular and those verge on being mere earworms. Hints at heaviness. I vaguely recall reading something recently about listening to bands who aren't very good but have a great record collection. I think FF qualifies. Not a COMPLETE waste of time, but I have pretty limited time.
One of the songs I was already super familiar with because it’s on our in store music at work. Not an album I’ll probably search for, but it’s not bad.
Ok
The question comes now as to whether I rate based on whether I think the album is good or whether I liked it. I think it's good, I don't love the music.
Energy is really good, but lyrics are completely meaningless and most of tracks are quite bland. Except "Take Me Out" and a few others (I thought I love this band, but I only love a few tracks)
Songs are ok
Doesn't do anything for me ... not my genre. That said, much more interesting than other punk/dance bands. 2/5
Many years on, I no longer feel angry about the bait and switch (in my opinion) of "Take Me Out". Nevertheless...
This was just ok for me. I remembered not liking them very much but I gave it another listen since I had not heard it in years. I can appreciate the musicians but the songs themselves are not for me really. Michael, please dance with him so he will quit singing.
Take Me Out is a great single, but there is no world where this album is worthy of more than a passing listen. Basically a modern rip of everything Adam Ant, Roxy Music and Talking Heads did much better in the 70s.
Sounds pretty food
2/5
I dunno, there's a few interesting riffs but they don't build into anything and the voice gets annoying after hearing it song after song. Blah blah 2 stars
Personal rating: 2.5/5
Not for me
Franz Ferdinand's self-titled album brings with it a reputation as one of the more respected works from the past two decades, but it has never managed to strike a chord with me. As I listened through the album, I sensed an expectation that the tracks are supposed to be super catchy—unfortunately, the songs fell short of being genuinely enjoyable or catchy to my ears. There's an evident ambition in their music to channel some of the quirkiness and cool factor of bands like Talking Heads, yet Franz Ferdinand doesn’t quite reach the heights of innovation that make Talking Heads a standout. Instead, the album often felt dominated by a repetitive beat in the background—a constant presence that started to grate on me rather than groove with me. It’s this element of their sound that I find more annoying than captivating, leaving the tracks feeling monotonous and underwhelming. While I can appreciate the band's place in modern rock history and understand the appeal they might hold for others, for me, the album doesn't deliver the sound I was hoping for. Favourite Tracks: Auf Achse
Can't believe it's 20 years old. Has some good stuff on it, but not going on my playlist.
It sounds like they can't decide whether they want to be The Killers or The Strokes, and the result is an album that is a pale imitation of either and nowhere near as good. None of the songs stand out, including the big hit, Take Me Out. It's interesting that this actually came out months before Killers Hot Fuss, because it sounds like a rip off version. Or maybe The Killers ripped off Franz Ferdinand. Or maybe this kind of sound just saturated early 2000s rock music after The Strokes and White Stripes led the "garage rock revival" and was ripped off by so many bands named "The <insert plural noun>". At least they didn't follow the band name formula, but I don't know how this band got this big when they sound so bland.
Sorprende que sea el primer disco. Mucha energía.
Franz Ferdinand is the debut album by Scottish indie rock band Franz Ferdinand. This critically acclaimed album is a masterpiece of funky, punchy, cool, indie garage rock. It won the 2004 Mercury Music Prize - which is essentially the best album of the year in the UK. It has been certified gold in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, & Norway, and platinum in Australia, the US, & the UK (4x). I enjoyed the fun indie rock on this debut album. This young band did a great job on their first album and it deserves a listen.
A good song
meh
Didn't love it when it was released, still don't love it now.
Take me out is the only track I'd give another listen, and that would be for nostalgic purposes alone really. Not my fave...
Take me out is a banger
Like lots of similar bands generating this type of indie rock they will be great live but the music doesn’t transpose as good onto records. Not something I could sit and listen to. At best would be OK on a playlist for the gym or out running.
I've given this album a 2 star rating for the two songs I think make this album and likely their entire career.
The band sound as bored as I am. Jingly jangly guitars performed by mediocre musicians. There isn't an ounce of originality amongst them. 1 extra point because Take Me Out has rattled around in my brain for the day, annoyingly.
The guitars go brrr, but I don't connect with the lyrics at all.
Neither nor …
Sans souvenirs mais promis j'ai écouté
not terrible, a little boring though. quite predictable nothing hugely outstanding except for Take Me Out which was very good. I'm Cheating On You was also alright. Overall lyrics were very weak i thought. 2/5
The catchyness of Take Me Out doesn't make up for a bog standard album
Not my thing.
Meh
Now this was underwhelming. On the positive side, there weren’t many bad songs per se, but on the other hand, there wasn’t a single good song that I want to listen to again either. Bland hipster rock for people who don’t really like music.
Pretty good album, love the bass lines
It was OK
I owned this album! I listen to it quite a bit. This really an album I have to hear before I die? My memory says it’s barely average. I mean wasn’t Franz Ferdinand the millennial equivalent of Foreigner? Styx? Foghat? Are those albums on this list? If not, why is this? And if they are on the list, why? (Note: Reading the reviews I guess this is no longer on the list. It’s an extra) Before I re-listen to it let’s rate and see how close I am afterwards. My pre-rate is 2/5. Ok let’s go - Jacqueline - always thought this was a weird way to start this album, the spoken word thing. Good song. 3/5 Tell Her Tonight - yeah. It’s fine. Not bad 2/5 Take Me Out - THE SONG! The one I still remember cause they still play it on the radio. Pretty stellar song, and nice that it has that change-up at the beginning. That made it stand out. 4/5 The Dark of the Matinee - Eh. Once again fine. A big step down from THE SONG. 2/5 Aug Achse - utterly forgettable. 1/5 Cheating on You - man, this is the douchebag song. I remember liking this song. Once again fine. 2/5 This Fire - I remember this song at the same level as Take Me Out. But it’s not. Good though. 3/5 Darts of Pleasure - I mean it’s suppose to be a party rock album right? Pretty lightweight. That’s the problem. I mean that was always the problem with this band. 1/5 Michael - This song jumps out. I don’t remember it that way back then. 4/5 Come on Home - uh. 1/5 40’ - eh. 2/5 So, competently made. It’s not a bad listen. Enjoyable. It’s just not memorable. It’s one ear and out the other. I can mix this with other similar party rock songs and it would fit. It has to be surrounded by more solid songs. I imagine it plays well in a cocktail setting. I think FF was a critical darling because of the frustration over the dominance of nu-metal and pop punk, a kind of wasteland of commercial rock that needed to be swept aside. In the end hip hop just pretty much just took over around this time. It was the last ebb of rock music. Going out with a whimper. 2/5
Not my thing
Mid
Decent album to put on while vacuuming.
'Take Me Out' was the only thing good on this album, and it was way overplayed on the radio. 2/5
Mid rock
medium good
Pretty dull soundscape. Similar songs with weak hooks. Ok but not for me.
Not my style
Bastante monótono
2/5. Was never a big swing, pop type of drummer so I never really liked Franz Ferdinand.
Just not my type
Come on man. "The greatest albums of all time"? I expect every Tool, Metallica, GnR, Zeppelin, and Stones album to be on here if this shit is on here. It's an alright album, like 6/10 but not the greatest anything.
I guess this album is supposed to be fun? But in an ironic and disaffected way? I don't know, I just felt kind of irritated.
Sounds like Muswell Hill times. Not a fan.
very early 2000s...not my favorite. sounds sort of unoriginal...and monotonous after a while. this could be due to 2023 context and because i listen to too much indie rock though. Also I disliked the lack of focus on melody really - it feels very bass driven and not in a good way, and I don't love that. and vocals are kind of reminiscent of Bowie but melodies are trash intro of "take me out" reminded me of joy division's "love will tear us apart" but like a less cool version best (both mid): the dark of the matinee / come on home (it's fine?) worst: :( auf achse / cheating on you / michael rating: 2/5. sorry :/ only 2 decent tracks
meh
Boring.
Alright nothing exciting kinda repetitive beat throughout the album. \"Take me out\"
Typical 80's hair rock. Eddie Van Halen was plaudited as the latest greatest thing with a guitar, but a bit too much of it for me. Wouldn't avoid them but wouldn't go out of my way to see or listen to them either. Half way again, 2.5.
mediocre metal
I can passively listen to it, but if I pay attention it's not that interesting.
I don’t know that I’ve ever listened to this album in full - just “Take Me Out”. I appreciate their impact on indie rock in the 00s, but overall this album isn’t doing it for me.
