Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Very different. I enjoyed it. This is probably the first recommended album I've actually liked
Very nice! Track 1 was a beauty
They’d make good bards
i ship them tbh was NOT expecting frank lloyd wright to be mentioned. rip frank garf studied architecture???? no way baby driver is a vibe favorite song: so long, flw cause frank is my second fav architect rip
one song in and this very very lovely. lovely is the best way to describe it. this is like peak 9 years old in your car coming home from a roadtrip its gloomy and its raining and youre listening to the radio and looking out the window longingly. lowk this is like the past version of hello by adele not in sound or even simialrty but in emotional resonance yk. this album is def too folky for me. this second song is giving circus im skipping. wait nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. i think the first song just slapped im not messing with the other songs so far. ok i kinda fw so long, frank lloyd wright. overall im not the biggest fan i think i liked three songs total i just dont fw folky music and thats ok hey
A stone cold classic album for sure! Strong opening to this one but once the boxer played i started to drift a bit
4.0 (11 tracks, 36:56, 5th and final,1970) folk rock Following the duo's soundtrack for The Graduate, Art Garfunkel took an acting role in the film Catch-22. A similar musical pattern as their previous album "Bookends (1968)", sold over 25 million copies worldwide. Garfunkel’s work on the film is widely cited as the reason for the breakup. "Bridge over Troubled Waters" was influenced by the gospel music to which Simon was listening at that time. The "silver girl" in the song refers to his wife Peggy at the time, and her first gray hairs. "El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)" is a Peruvian song based on traditional Andean music. Simon relied on erroneous information from Jorge Milchberg of Los Incas about the collection of royalties for his arrangement of song. Simon wrongfully thought it to be a traditional song and thus not restricted by copyright law “Cecilia” He began with a random line, "You're breaking my heart. I'm down on my knees," The song is about an unfaithful girl who invites another lover to her bed, while the singer (the first) is in the bathroom. David Browne suggested that the name may be derived from the patron of music, Saint Cecilia and I believe it was an intentional double meaning by Paul in the selection of the name. "Keeping the Customer Satisfied" is like "Homeward Bound," a song about the trials of a traveling band. "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright" is a tribute to the architect Frank Lloyd Wright but also to Garfunkel, who wanted to train as an architect. It’s thinly veiled as a goodbye to Garfunkel. “So long Artie” The folk ballad "The Boxer", became one of the longest and toughest in the duo's career. This is my favorite of all Simon & Garfunkel songs. “All lies in gest; A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest" "Baby Driver", an up-tempo and happy rock and roll song considered a fluff piece already released as a B-side of "The Boxer", talks about a boy who lives a comfortable life in a protected home, but who searches for adventures and one day decides to have his first sexual experience. Just a bunch of innuendo. Not my favorite. "The Only Living Boy in New York" it is about the isolation Simon felt while Garfunkel was away filming. Tom refers to Art’s pseudonym in a high school band they formed. It’s a super sad song knowing they had been friends since elementary school. I like this song - it's so sad. "Why Don't You Write Me", deals with separation from Simon's wife in a jungle and again a veiled complaint to Art – my least favorite song on this album. The Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love" had been recorded live, but Simon, Garfunkel, and Halee were not satisfied with the performances. Again saying goodbye to each other -in Tom and Jerry they idolized The Everly Brothers. The album's final song, "Song for the Asking", represents an "olive branch" extended by the duo to each other and holding open the possibility of reconciliation and further collaboration. They never recorded together again, but they have reunited in concert many times. After Bridge over Troubled Water, both musicians became more independent. Garfunkel took a role in another Mike Nichols film, Carnal Knowledge, in the role of Sandy, for which he later earned a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor nomination. All tracks are written by Paul Simon except where noted. 1. "Bridge over Troubled Water" 4:52 2. "El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)" Daniel Alomía Robles 3:06 3. "Cecilia" 1969 2:55 4. "Keep the Customer Satisfied" 2:33 5. "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright" 3:41 6. "The Boxer" 5:08 7. "Baby Driver" 3:14 8. "The Only Living Boy in New York" 3:58 9. "Why Don't You Write Me" 2:45 10. "Bye Bye Love" 2:55 11. "Song for the Asking" 1:49
One of the best Side A's in all of recorded history. Favorite song: Keep the Customer Satisfied.

Last S & G, Classic Bridge over troubled waters Cecilia The boxer
I guess this is why George Banks wouldn't stfu about them, this is so chill.
One of my faves! I used to own this on CD and listen to it driving to or from school with my brother :) I am a rock is always gonna be a bop
feels like a warm hug
Not really my cup of tea, but I instantly recognised several classics. Thanks to this project for nudging me towards music I wouldn’t normally listen to. Standout tracks: Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Boxer
Very solid
Nice one
5* straight out the gate, I thought. But wth is that Frank Lloyd Wright track 😆
Bridge Over Troubled Water is filled with iconic lyrics, beautiful musicality, and a rich variety of styles and moods.
The key tracks on the album -- special shoutout to "The Boxer" -- are great. The challenge is in the remaining tracks. Not Paul Simon's strongest writings, and the production can be overblown.
Calm, almost pastoral folk music from one of the greatest to ever do it. Simple as that. The album has a cozy feel, their voices compliment each other in a way that's just magical. The arrangements are soft and gentle but never boring, they just strengthen the autumny vibes. The pianos provide a super pretty background and give it this organic atmosphere that few albums in a similar style have. This album is truly magical and very entrancing in its beauty.
A beautiful blend of genres wrapped up in a comforting folk album. My favourites are the title track (one of three I knew before listening today, although Cecilia I know from the Suggs cover) and El Condor Pasa (If I Could).
Lie la lie Lie la lie lie lie lie lie
“Bridge over troubled water” is such a beautiful song, my eyes literally started watering. In “El Condor Pasa” when they’re singing in the higher pitch it sounds haunting. I adore “Cecilia” it reminds me of when I was younger. The horns in “Keep the Customer Satisfied” made me feel an insane amount of joy. “The Boxer” immediately made me feel like sobbing like literally immediately. The “ah’s” in the background of “The Only Living Boy in New York” make me think of Joseph and the technicolor dream coat. “Why Don’t You Write Me” sounds tropical to me for no particular reason. In “Bye Bye Love” they actually sound pretty good playing live. “Song for the Asking” is genuinely the perfect way to end the album.
This one really took off in a great way. Favs are So Long Frank Lloyd Wright and Keep the Customer Satisfied.
Sublime
I just want to talk about 'So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright', the tender and moving testimonial to the famous architect who died 11 years before this album was released but apparently enjoyed staying up all night with Paul and/or Art, just harmonizing and laughing, laughing, so long, so much laughter with Frank Lloyd Wright. Till dawn. Laughter and laughing, so long, so long. Did these legendary evenings occur at Taliesin? At Wingspread? Dare we imagine the harmonic laughter tumbling out of the windows at Falling Water, mixing with the sound of the stream below in a way that surely only Frank could have possibly have imagined. It's the perfect blend of classic prairie style architectural heroes and flute backed cable knit cardigan folk music! 4 Stars because The Boxer is immediately after that song and it's so farking good.
The only living boy in new york
4.5/5
I don't listen to this kind of music a lot but I like it, would’ve never discovered it. I loved “Why Don’t You Write Me” a lot, probably my favorite in the album
Mi favorita la de bridge over troubled water y the only living boy in new york
Classic
Classic. Some really great songs.
Folk music has been chasing the high of “The Boxer” for 50 years…
Paul Simon is definitley one of the premier american songwriters and garfunkel is...an amazing singer let's leave it at that. These guys have so many standards in american songwriting but I feel like album experiences always have a couple tracks that just don't jive with me. Otherwise, this has some of their most iconic songs (title track, baby driver, the boxer and cecilia) so worth it for that.
Classic, have heard most of these songs before, but had never sat down and listened to this start to finish.
Those cannon snare shots in the boxer sealed the deal
“Bridge Over Troubled Water” is one of those albums that I've simply heard too many times—whether at my father's house or in music class. But since that was several decades ago, I was able to listen to it without any problems. The title track still annoys me a little, I still find the Simon & Garfunkel version of “El Condor Pass” random, and then there are the two songs that don't really sound like S&G... And finally, “The Boxer,” which in my opinion is the strongest song on this album. Maybe it's just less worn out for me than the ones mentioned above—I guess my parents just played side B less often. Yes, it's one you should know, but for me, it's definitely not five stars.
That was fun- very mellow album. 3.5
Not the best Simon & Garfunkel album but still solid
Celia, you're breaking my heart 💔
Bonne petite écoute l'air de rien.
Yeah this was a lovely album! The way they sing is very nice on the ear and makes for such an easy breezy listen. I would say after that listen my favourites are easily the title track and The Boxer, but there were no real duds. However I would say it’s an album where I like most of the songs, but don’t know if I’ll revisit it much as a whole, but otherwise very nice!
I’ve been looking for more folk songs. This was perfect.
A couple of classics. Overall quite enjoyable
What a coincidence that this is possibly by favourite CD that I own so I know I already love this album. It does not have my favourite songs by S & G but the title track is still amazing, along with If I could. This is perfect for the later months of the year and immediately calms me. Solid 4/5 <3
not bad, not great ig
Nearly a 5. When it hits, it hits well, but the few songs that aren't bangers really drag it down.
Melankoliskt, vackert
Enjoyed the album, but there were a few songs that tipped it out of the five star range
never really gave it much consideration but yeah. Brilliant tbh.
Beautiful. First one of these that has really clicked with me. Fully understand it right now, why I would put this on while doing chores and my husband is reading on the couch and yelling at our two sons. Im not at masterpiece, but I just do get this one. I like mr garfunkel.
There’s a lot to love on this album. Some other best tracks like the title and the Boxer. Can’t forget Cecilia either, but also some forgettable tunes as well. Maybe this is a victim of its own success because I don’t really get how this became such a massive commercial and critical success. This is a fine album to me but not one of the greatest of all time. That being said, it definitely earned its spot on this list. Feeling a soft 4/5 because a 3 just seems like blasphemy for a record with such strong hits.
Mostly Yes, sometimes boring. But mostly yes.
The Beatles are always a welcome band to listen to. Great album overall, my favourite song was, “I’m looking through you”
Gold!
- Ugh, Garfunkel played in Israel in 2025. Seriously? Another to boycott. - I really liked this - I’m not sure I had heard the full album before. - The music is sweet and easy going - very melodic and touching. - Though, it's not a 5 because I really don't love tracks 4 (the high-register singing, waaah-oohing, and the screechy horns... ugh), 5 (melodically and lyrically uninteresting), and 7 & 9 (hokey), but the rest of the songs are great. - The voices complement each other, and I'm really enjoying the instrumentals (keys, xylophone, flute, bass and guitar, too).
Anybody else kinda feel like this album cover is that meme where the Undertaker is looming behind that other smiling wrestler? History doesn't repeat itself, but sometimes it rhymes. Anyway, thi is really the apotheosis of the folks album, for both good and bad. I know the big songs by heart, not necessarily because I sought them out, but I've heard them a million times. But they're still very, very good songs. "Cecilia" is tiresome to me at this point, but the title track, "El Condor Pasa (If I could)", "The Boxer", and "The Only Living Boy in New York" all still deeply resonate. Deep tracks were fine, very much in keeping with their overall sound. They're good but, to my meathead rock brain, not great.
Lots of good classic songs on this. Not pump up music, but good chill music. Mom really likes it.
Really enjoyed this album. Mainly the hits that I already knew. There were a few songs a disliked or thought were so-so, mostly the more pop sounding ones (Cecilia excluded). 👍Bridge Over Troubled Water, El Condor Pasa (If I Could), Cecilia, The Only Living Boy in New York
Just a great album and, while neither of those guys by themselves are astounding vocalists, together they do make a kind of alchemy.
Already knew it from long ago, and a nice folk album with familiar classics.
Like a fridge over troubled water, most people are only thinking about the cheese. That’s my HustleFreak Friday quote of the day. For all my HustleFreakz™️ who wake up at 2:30am to squat punch themselves while reading a million habits that make me better than you by P.N.S Quigley until they forget their dad never loved them, this one will hit a little closer to home. I hate that I will have to seriously review this album. What I don’t hate is the fact that I will probably love it. Bridge Over Troubled Water - Operatic. A little too operatic? Nah. It’s a beautiful song. I believe fully perpetrated by the man who looks mad about being blocked on the front cover here. Art Garfunkel. The Art Garfunkel to Paul Simon’s Paul Simon. El Condor Pasa (If I Could) - Let me tell you, you do NOT want to eat Condor Pasta. Talk about gamey. I was picking bones of other birds out of my teeth for weeks. I think I ate part of a bindle! Errm excuse me waiter, there is the remains of a hobo who attempted to cross the Sedona desert in my condor Pasta. No I don’t want you to remake it with a less forlorn wanderer. I will never come back to this McDonald’s Test Kitchen in Tempe Arizona again. Cecilia - It’s a hootenanny folks. Well it’s at least a hootenanny compared to the solemn reflection at the bridge over the troubled waters. Keep the Customer Satisfied - I can even forgive these guys using the riverboat revival organ. The melodies are simply too NICE. So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright - Simultaneously a beautiful, gorgeous, amazing “chamber pop” song (is it?) and also a hilariously odd tribute to architect Frank Lloyd Wright. These kooky cats! The Boxer - YES. WE’RE GETTING MOURNFUL BABY. I immediately start shadow boxing when I hear this song and then my left arm starts to hurt and I have to lie down. My cardiologist has requested I take these notes. Baby Driver - Get that baby out of the driver’s seat. Just because he has his palmar reflex and can grip the steering wheel, doesn’t mean he can drive that truck. Oh. Actually, he’s doing a pretty good job. How’s he running the Jake brake? Anyway. We need these logs in Tulsa by Tuesday. Hit the road, Junior. The Only Living Boy in New York - The whole state? Man, what happened? Was there a disease outbreak? Hmm. Was it somehow condor based? I see. I have to uhh go. Why Don’t You Write Me - I don’t know, probably because every other living boy on New York is fucking dead!? They have more important shit going on. Come on Paul. Bye Bye Love - Dentures commercial song with live jump scare. Song for the Asking - Mostly the question of “Why?” I slammed pop music being ordained somehow special in a recent review of Peter Gabriel. I think when you get back here, you can do it with my blessing. This will appeal to your everyday radio listener’s grandmother, but also have enough (condor) meat on the bone for the most voracious of nerd to chew on. Beautiful melodies, simple, yet thought provoking poems and excellent singing mark another highly enjoyable release from this duo. The water remains troubled, but this bridge will stand another 1000 years. 4-4.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Bridge Over Troubled Water, So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright, The Boxer, Baby Driver, The Only Living Boy in New York
This isn't an album that I would normally listen to on my own. With that said, I was surprised by the amount of variety in this album. I believe that Bridge Over Troubled Waters and The Sound of Silence are the only two Simon & Garfunkel songs that I've heard before, so hearing this album was a welcome surprise.
This eased my mind like something... I just can't put my finger on it.
Light 4
The album starts with one of my favourite songs of all time. It never really gets over that 4 star -> 5 star hump but it's still real good
Um belo disco! Faixas que viraram clássicos. QoA Cloudscape.
title track is a bit overrated but overall this is beautiful work.
Excellent album.
Iconic folk album blah blah blah
I have the vinyl
I mean a classic!
it shows me emotionional feelings that i didnt know i can feel
Absolutely classic songs. Still makes me sad that they didn’t make more together, though Simon had some great solo work.
An album for its time at the end of the 60's that has played well with successive generations. Still a great listen. Who would have known it would be the duo's break up LP.
Troubled water you say? These boys need some support from The Rivers Trust. It’s a mix of 5 star and 4 star music. Wrong side of the rounding on this one boys.
I'd forgotten--or never realized--how diverse the instrumentation is on this album: mandolin, flute, various saxophones, and they all work pretty well.
Listened to it once, wasn't sure, then listened to it again, and again, and again. What it is is a fantastic *album*, as in all the songs work together to give the whole texture and style. And there are some heartbreakingly beautiful tunes within that as well. Only issue is there are a few places you wish somebody had asked Paul Simon to stop, before getting too self-involved.
Wanted to give 4.5, whats not to like? Its short enough to listen through a few times, got some classic tracks that most people will have heard of along with album tracks that are also great. Few fillers, at 37mins its hard to fit them in. Also, the lyric "I have squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles such are promises" is genius.
4.3
great chill folk vibe. some songs felt same-y and just merged into the rest of the album however this doesn't mean those songs are bad, I don't think there are any bad songs in the album just not a lot of great ones.
Great album!
Graceland is such a favourite, so it's really unacceptable it took me this long to visit this. I love the S&G do Brian Wilson moments, some very touching moments in this. Need to familiarise myself a bit further and come back.
Very close to five stars.
I like Paul Simon a lot, Art got lucky teaming up with him. The title track is an absolute classic that bridges generations. It's beautiful, powerful and catchy. It has 325M listens, that's royalty. My favorite, and the most listened to track on the album, is "Cecilia" at over 460M listens. So catchy, definitive ear worm and another generation bridging track that everyone knows. I hear "The Boxer" on the radio all the time, more than it likely deserves (345M listens) but it too is a classic that has stood up really well over time. Those 3 tracks get this into the T1001, but then you add in the glue tracks like "El Condor Pasa" (114M), "The Only Living Boy..." (135M) and "Baby Driver" (51M) and you have a really solid album that people adore. No song on it has fewer than 10M listens, that's pretty rare. Hard to argue those numbers, fan or not. This was old when I was a kid but it's still on the radio, all the time. It's not entirely my thing but this one deserves a spot on the T1001 for sure based on influence, hits, longevity, covers of these songs, generational bridge, etc.
Very pleasant and a couple of classics elevate it.
I mean, haunting and beautiful, but man, were these guys depressed as hell? There are a few points of light, but even the bubbly Cecilia is a sad affair.
I was torn between a 4 and a 5 here. So many great songs, but it also feels pretty dated at times.
Simon and Garfunkel were incredible. The songwriting, the music, the new-ness. Some songs are so heartfelt and sensitive. Some songs are just fun. It's kind of wild that the album is only 36 minutes long, but I guess they did what they needed to, haha.
Simon and Garfunkels greatest hits was the first CD I ever bought myself, so I'm not going to be able to ignore nostalgia on this one. I think I can sing every track from memory. Favorite track is baby driver
7.5/10
Kinda funny how you can sometimes when you know it’s an artist/group’s final record, you can hear it in the music can’t you? Bridge Over Troubled Water is certainly one of those. Having looked at other reviews I think I’m in the minority who don’t see this as S&G’s best album (Sounds of Silence or Wednesday Morning, 3AM for me.) but still, it’s a fantastic effort, and I’d expect no less given the talents of the duo, and in The Boxer has one of my favourite songs ever within it. One thing I’ve always thought funny was that it must be one of the only records where the title track is one of the weakest songs on the record.
This is a a classic! The Boxer is one of my favorites. Nice to hear the rest of this album finally. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to the whole thing.
There are some iconic songs on this album. Simon and Garfunkel are one of the greatest duos in music history.
Much more grand with more instruments used than I remembered. Fantastic song writing and composition, not necessarily my favorite genre but still great. Art’s vocals seem so clean and effortless
Amazing final album by them, the songs are beautiful and memorable. The lyrics feel so personal and the accompanying music fills everything so right.
I was starting to get a little sick of all the folk rock on this list, but this album was pretty good. Nothing felt too same-y like most folk stuff. Standout Songs: Cecilia Keep the Customer Satisfied The Boxer Baby Driver
Honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed the album. Side note, I was also very entertained by being able to tell which songs were by Garfunkel and which ones were by Simon (or at least who I think wrote what)
I think some of the songs on here are hauntingly beautiful and profound, I love his songwriting to death. It slogs in some places though, apart from that no serious complaints.
One of my favorites of theirs👍🏿👍🏿
About half of this is all time classics and the other half isnt really of too much consequence to me. Its the old-school singers songwriters type thing but some of it just isnt memorable. At least to the degree the boxer is. But the guys both sing great and the music behind them doesnt get in the way of that. Its damn good though. Damn good. Just doesnt hit you like a truck every track.
Nothing but love for 'Cecilia' and 'Baby Driver', a lot of the other songs are a bit too slow but damn, there was some real joy contained in this one Also remind me again what the hell did Art contribute to this band??
Enjoyed as much if not more than the previous Simon & Garfunkel album. Perhaps a dumb perspective but it always feels like secular gospel music to me, not worshipping any God but just appreciating life itself. Gleeful music, I guess -- even if the lyrics don't reflect that.
Great album but has its weak points, feels like it was rushed a bit in production, which would explain the strange choice to add some live songs instead of doing those in the studio as well as the rest of the album... "The Boxer" and the title track are absolute bangers.
There are some crazy standouts on it, but a lot of it doesn’t live up to the quality of those highlights. Still a really strong album though. Favorites: Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Boxer, Bye Bye Love
Always wonderful and enjoyable.
Really great - just a few slow points that drop it to a 4, but close to a 5
Excellent album from the duo at their height.
Fun album
Really enjoyed this album. High replay value!
Some amazing songs, but the filler takes it down to a four.
Songs are beautifully crafted
This album is like spending a week with your grandmother because it is school holidays, both of your parents work, and you are too young to be left at home alone. Grandma makes sure the week is fun, by taking you to her golf club to hit some balls and eat fish and chips for dinner. The next day you go to the harbour and look at boats before getting some mini donuts for afternoon tea.
This was great. I knew a lot of these songs well, and uncovered some surprises in the ones that were new to me.
A magical album that has dark and ghostly athmosphere. Didn't expect to like it so much 4/5
What a great album. Highlights: If i could, the boxer and the only living boy in new york.
Love this album, especially ‘the only living boy in new York’. Dreaming song.
I’m not allowed to listen to the song Bridge Over Troubled Water in my house because it makes my wife sadder than any other song. That being said it is maybe the only song on this album I don’t really like.
A lot of complex production, you can hear the influence of the Beatles. Some really catchy songs and impressive songwriting. A lot of different genres represented.
lots of hits on this one. listening all the way through for the first time, and it strikes me that it's solid, but not every song is a masterpiece like other reviewers say.
The songs are well written. Only thing I could complain about is parts of the production. At times it's slightly Corny as well. But all in all a very pleasant listen
Baustelle, Gerstetten, Deutschland.
Want the Only Living Boy in NY (prachtig overigens) is wel even een overgang. 8/10 Highlights The Boxer The Only Living Boy in New York
it was a pleasant experience
Classic
The harmonies, the orchestration, the songwriting. It all is so familiar in the cannon of American music at this point but to truly listen to this like it's the first time you realize how unbelievable unique this group was. You can't compare Bridge Over Troubled Water to another song, and to start an album with that song seems wild now. I love Paul Simon and still can't wrap my head around his guitar playing and the changes/choices he makes but it feels singular and still so familiar. Embarrassingly this was my first time listening cover to cover. The group ended on a high note with their 5th album with a near perfect album.
Lots of great songs on this album, although it kind of drops off after The Boxer. I've never been a huge fan of the song Bridge Over Troubled Water, but the album as a whole is quite enjoyable. Something I particularly enjoyed about this album was the variety and breadth of the instrumentation. Strings, bass harmonica, and all kinds of different auxiliary sounds provide different textures throughout, keeping things fresh and interesting. Contrast that to the recent Leonard Cohen album that abused jaw harp in the same way on every track. That was cool, but this album did it better in my opinion.
This is a solid album. There are some really great songs on it and some fairly forgettable ones. I got very into the Jacob Collier version of Bridge Over Troubled Water which led me to enjoy the S&G (original) version too. I'm also a fan of El Condor Pasa, Cecilia and The Boxer. 8/10.
This is my first time listening to a full album from Simon & Garfunkel. The sound mixing was really fun on this album. The instruments were distinctly separated creating a cool live music experience. I listened to it on my walk to La Maison du Pain near our Airbnb in Samois sur Seine. So that added an element of fun exploring a new area.
This is one of my mom's favorite albums. Very chill with some great singer-songwriter vibes and some classic songs
Top track: Cecilia
Solid easy listening album, can be listened to in the background, but the lyrics really are worth listening to, Paul Simon is a treasure,
Classics and deep cuts
Bordering on Nick Drakesy irrelevance at times, but wonderful songwriting to be had here, too.
Great album! I feel like you can hear Paul Simon fully taking over the songwriting on this one. Some amazing songs on it - "The Boxer" is one of my all time favorites. Highlights: "The Boxer", "Only Living Boy in New York" and "Cecilia"
interessante
First 4 songs>>>
Beautiful album
Very good! I liked it.
Another great, that I founded myself singing all day and returned to in the evening
It was fun. they made a story and it was a good one. some of the songs weren’t too connected to others. i’m not sure what a bridge over troubled water meant in some of their metaphors lol
Some stunning moments but uneven overall.
Annoyingly this is good at times
Maan this album is good. I would rate it a 5 just for the influence and the lyricism, but I have a standard for 5, where I only give albums a 5, that I could listen to any day. And this is a little further from my taste. I like Paul Simon’s solo stuff a little better too i think.
4.5
yessss folk on top 💪 the harmonies go crazy
(4.5) love love love
Some all time amazing songs in one album
A classic. Beautiful.
4 stars The first time I heard “Bridge Over Troubled Water” it was on a late night infomercial for an Anne Murray CD. Years later when I saw that “The Only Living Boy in New York” was on here (which I loved from Garden State), I bought a beat up vinyl copy from a thrift store. It was so scratched I could barely hear the beginning of the opening title track, until the build up of the wail of a chorus. I remember getting tears in my eyes the first time I listened to it. A bit dramatic, yes. But the point is to say that I have some history with this one. I love this record. I love the song writing and the singing. I could do without “So Long Frank Lloyd Wright” and I always found “Keep the Customer Satisfied” cheesy. But there is beauty in “The Boxer” and other tracks mentioned above. This one is a keeper.
enjoyed a lot more than i thought i would
The Only Living Boy In New York. Oh gosh, how to even begin to rate an album that contains one of my favourite songs ever. On the other hand, it is pretty straightforward. This is an album which would be most bands' The Very Best Of or Greatest Hits. For Simon & Garfunkel, it's just another album. An album with some crazy sequencing, to be fair. It will never be a Desert Island Disc for me (though Only Living Boy is a Desert Island Song) but it's very good.
Top-tier songwriting, full of beauty and meaning.
I’ve always found the title track a bit boring? It’s a bit gospel and I appreciate it, but it doesn’t stand up to some other tracks on this monster of an album IMO
"Bridge Over Troubled Water" is a bittersweet and highly listenable album. Despite its diverse musical styles, the production and mix create a sound that is both rich and full. The vocals are exceptional, especially when the harmonies are featured. The album has a generally mellow and soothing feel. The best tracks are the title song, "The Only Living Boy in New York," and "The Boxer," which could be considered the duo's greatest song. The album is an enduring classic, right down to its famous cover art. It earns a rating of four stars. Would I listen to the album again? Yes, I do. It's not my favourite album of theirs but still a great listen. Would I buy the album? Yes, I did. Side one 1 "Bridge Over Troubled Water"- (5/5) 2 "El Condor Pasa (If I Could)"- (4/5) 3 "Cecilia"- (4/5) 4 "Keep the Customer Satisfied"- (4/5) 5 "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright"- (4/5) Side two 1 "The Boxer"- (5/5) 2 "Baby Driver"- (4/5) 3 "The Only Living Boy in New York"- (5/5) 4 "Why Don't You Write Me"- (4/5) 5 "Bye Bye Love"- (3/5) 6 "Song for the Asking"- (4/5) Total - 46 Average - 4.18 96/1001
Good one. Music what you can listen with mom. Easygoing and good songwriting. Bridge over troubled water is great piece of art
Just lovely
I was SO EXCITED to have been assigned this album. it basically defined my senior year of college, so there's a layer of nostalgia that just makes me love it even more. track notes: -title track gives me goosebumps EVERY. TIME. -EL CONDOR PASA fucking bangs -i know this is controversial but CECELIA is the only skip on this album for me. i can only describe it as "cacophonous"-- so fcking loud and discordant. i'm not a fan. -KEEP THE CUSTOMER SATISFIED super super good -s&g proving their range by following two high-energy pop hits with FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT. so impressive. -THE BOXER. i cannot emphasize enough my love for this song. probably my #1 s&g track period. no notes. -BABY DRIVER, another 10/10. -THE ONLY LIVING BOY so fire. lol my notes are just "SO GOOD OMG SO GOOD SO GOOD BLA BLA BLA" -WHY DONT YOU WRITE ME: so goofy, surreal. simon is so manic as he plays soldier. the "wa la laaa"s are some of my fave s&g adlibs. -BYE BYE LOVE, being a cover, feels a bit like a throwaway among the gold that is this tracklist. that said, their aptitude for live performance is insane, and the audience does add a richness to this cover. -if theres one thing paul simon loves to do, it's brush up against the concept of a higher power. it might not necessarily be the intended interpretation of this song, but SONG FOR THE ASKING has always read to me like a plead for god to show himself-- he's ready for devotion, he just needs a sign! it's somewhat of a bleak note to end an album of pop hits and declarations of love on, but hey, aren't emotional rollercoasters sort of a hallmark of simon and garfunkel's collaboration? this is a 4/5, easily. CECELIA and BYE BYE LOVE knock a point off for me, but i'm also deeply appreciative of the dreamlike and whirlwind quality they give this record.
a bunch of songs I knew and then one about Frank Lloyd Wright... that was weird
Great album with HOF song in Ceceila. 7.3/10
Etapa religiosa: Wednesday Morning 3 AM; 2. Simon & Garfunkel Classic (1966-68): Sounds of Silence, Parsley... Bookends; 3. Emancipación de Paul Simon: Bridge Over Troubled Water.
ooh lobby/living room music. somber piano with the soft reverb is always classy. Love the powerful but calming voice with the big band. Cecilia always a banger. I like how all the elements of this song have their place in the sonic space. like you're there being performed to, but somehow its around a campfire too. Okay Keeping the Customer Satisfied slaps. The nylons on that one song are kinda good. The dissonance is really cool.
it is alright
Bros kept getting back together and breaking up and for what. Cool folk in the sea of 60s-70s psychedelic rock. Bridge over troubled water - mega banger. Timeless el condor pasa - kinda whatever cecilia - this one is a lot of fun keep the customer satisfied - my eardrums almost popped from the quality so long flw - nice and chill the boxer - banger baby driver - lots of fun the only living boy in new york - feels amazing why don't you write me - i'm having too much fun with the solo man bye bye love - the clapping people are breaking my hearing but WE BALL song for the asking - short and sweet
bridge over troubled water itself kind of sucks (for me). the rest of the album is rather delightful
Not a perfect record, but god damn the first half of this album nearly is. Starts off with 3 of the best songs these guys ever wrote, honestly. Amazing way to go out.
Obviously it’s a classic, so many timeless songs
Great album, great song writing, but def a little too folksy for me
Classic
Knocked off a star for the last few songs
There were a few songs on this album that I felt had HEAVY Beatles influence. "Keep the Customer Satisfied" is a good example of that. Of course, it's borrowing heavily from Soul/Blues, but does so in the way the Beatles did. "Baby Driver" is even more obvious with the Beatles influence (and even Beach Boys with the "ba ba ba baa" adlib) with the chord progressions and vocal harmonies. Sounds like Paul could've covered this song perfectly. "Why Don't You Write Me" sounds like it would fit just fine on Sgt. Peppers. And that's totally fine! This is a really great album.
Side 1 is excellent, side not so much.
Solid
Standouts Bridge Over Troubled Water El Condor Pasa Cecilia Keep the Customer Satisfied The Boxer
I enjoyed this album. I have never really listened to Simon and Garfunkel before. I appreciated the harmonizing and some of the drum lines. The lyrics were all deep.
Another project by the duo, and so close to one another, I can definitely see the beauty of this album. The soft voice, the energy, the sentiment, everything about it makes me feel happy and warm inside in ways I can't ever easily explain. Truly wonderful experience. 4.5/5
Classic. Voices clearer and younger than remembered, or at least tastefully remastered. Felt very immediate.
Not every risk they took paid off. Still pretty good though.
Nice chill album
Okay, I get the hype around this one. Beautiful vocals, lovely guitar playing, great songs.
So it started off weird, but not in a bad way it was definitely more of like road trippy at the beginning and then halfway through it felt like the album transitioned into something different and a little bit more of what I would consider the Simon & Garfunkel that I’m more familiar with it felt like the first half of the album had much more of a tone much more of a ceiling much more of a direction than the last half was just kind of like the latest hits so I don’t know if that’s like side side for one, but it was pretty good overall for the first time first album pretty nice! Solid middle of the road like 3.5/5
Very good album. Some all time great songs
Excellent
Exactly what I thought it would be
So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright.
it's pretty much folk-banger after folk-banger.
These guys are amazing songwriters. That title track is an all-around incredible piece of music that the whole rest of the album almost fights to keep up with quality-wise. It's wild that they named Frank Lloyd Wright of all people for a whole song, but granted, I'm not nearly as well-educated on Simon & Garfunkel as I should be. There's a real intimacy to this album that I find really interesting. I feel like it's an album that's easy to find comfort in, even despite it being the duo's final record together.
This was my first time listening to a Simon and Garfunkel record front to back. I can hear their influence in so many artists. Favorite tracks are So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright, The only Living Boy in NY, The Boxer, Bye Bye Love,
It’s so gentle and soft, I really enjoy S&G. The horns in The Boxer are aspirational. I find purpose in every track to be honest.
not my vibe but still good
Beautiful arrangements
Very classic and I enjoyed listening to this again. Wonderful lyrics.
My first exposure to Simon and Garfunkel was when I found their Greatest Hits CD in the field of my elementary school. I took it home, cleaned it up, gave it a listen, and was pleasantly surprised! Pretty sure I still have it somewhere… Several of the tracks on the Greatest Hits are also in this album, but admittedly I never explored too much further. This album was an enjoyable listen, from the title track with the epic instrumentals to a “live” recording of Bye Bye Love later on. Keep the Customer Satisfied was a new/standout for me, and I’d also never heard So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright which was an interesting tribute. It was great to read more on the making or each song in the Wiki. My favorite off the album is The Boxer, with the lyrical emphasis in the fifth(?) verse right around 3min. I love this narrative style and very much enjoy following the stories each song tells.
I liked it, I like Simon and Garfunkel, they have better songs than what’s present on the album 75/100
Not as good as Bookends, but still pretty good
good album
It's a lovely album. Excellent lyrically and musically. Mostly folk influenced rock with a little bit of orchestration here and there. Bridge Over Troubled Water and The Boxer are the major classics and both are well worth their reputation. Garfunkel puts a virtuoso performance on the former whilst the storytelling and guitar work on the latter is fantastic. The other tracks don't quite reach these heights but they're still very good and worth a listen if you are in to classic pop or folk.
4.5
4/5
Nice mellow and fun tunes. Some greatest hits like the boxer and Cecilia along with some other songs I was not familiar with. Close to 5 star but not quite there 8.6
Not as good as bookends
Neat.
Frank Lloyd Wright. Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Some iconic tunes here that are now part of the American songbook, but a couple of bland clunkers drags the album down a bit.
Great vibes
Very comforting already, on track 1
85/100. Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel is a beautiful and timeless album. The title track, "Bridge Over Troubled Water," is one of my favorite songs of all time, so I had high expectations going in, and it absolutely delivered. With its blend of folk-pop and singer-songwriter craftsmanship, this album showcases the duo at their very best, truly mastering their art. A deeply moving and satisfying listen.
Pretty solid Simon and Funk album
Sounds like it was tracked in a cathedral. There’s beauty, and a hollow ache. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Bridge Over Troubled Water - Cecilia - The Boxer - Baby Driver
Yah there’s a reason this is the most well known Simon and Garfunkel album. It’s packed full of amazing talent and super soft ballads. Honestly my only complaint personally is that I don’t like slower music as much as I like the more “rock” stuff. For example, I appreciate the bridge over troubled water cover (although I do prefer the Elvis version). But my favorite song on the album is definitely either Cecilia or Keep the Customer Satisfied. If I’m being blunt I think I just like Paul Simon and his music a lot more than I like Garfunkel’s. And that’s what I think holds down this album is Garfunkel’s contributions. Idk if that like the consensus on their work/relationship but it’s definitely mine.
the clarity is really nice
I was feeling a wee bit weary and cynical when this popped up this morning. But it's won me round, once again. It starts out like a greatest hits record and its stature just can't be denied. Probably transcends taste.
Great album front to back. Really didn't expect to like the entirety of the album, even though I know, and we all know, some of this huge hits on this album. Production sounds wonderful. The live version of Bye Bye Love is an odd placement for this album, but the crowd clapping sounds like them old folks had a hoot. Title track is somber and eerily pretty.
Absolutely wonderful album.
Didn't know we had this on vinyl because it's one of my wifes favourite albums, but now I know! I actually liked it a lot myself. It's amazing that as a duo they broke up over 50 years ago, and people still care about their relationship.
I'm a sucker for some Simon & Garfunkel
Enjoyed listening to the songs with the harmonies and melodies.
Beautiful songwriting
Pretty darn good album.
Every song is enjoyable. The Boxer is an all time song, the rest is good to great
An absolute classic. Perhaps a little overproduced but full of amazing tracks
Preciso ouvir as outras obras dessa dupla magnânima! 4/5
Great. Beauty.
Probably not their best but still pretty great
Beautiful stuff
They lay it on a bit thick for me on the title track, tone it down boys and don't overplay your hand! The rest of the album is pretty sweet, looser and much more of an interesting mix of sounds that Paul continued to explore in his solo career.
Such a classic. Beautiful melodies. Lovely album.
Almost a perfect album. Paul Simon’s love letter and soft goodbye to Art Garfunkel. I’ve always resonated with Paul, his solitude, his introversion, his ache. And this album holds all of that and more.
Really enjoyed this. I thought the album as a whole flowed very well together, and there was some variety in the songs for the album. Pleasant surprise.
This duo. *chef’s kiss*
warm and fuzzies got a touch sleepy but overall bangin enough and so family friendly that I gotta give it props
Solid album.
They are both brilliant singers, indulging in great lyricism with amazing hits, with Cecilia and The Boxer with great B-sides. Soft and mellow, but something that everyone would appreciate.
Wow, what an album. I've heard several songs off this one, but never the album itself and I really loved it; I found several "hidden" gems. Only a song or two that didn't do it for me. I'm really impressed with how upbeat and engaging their music is with such great lyrics and voices to pair with it, they're truly a match made in heaven! Favorite songs: Bridge Over Troubled Water Cecilia The Boxer The Only Living Boy in New York Song for the Asking
The fifth and final Simon and Garfunkel album has plenty of expected high hallmarks, such as "Bridge over Troubled Waters". A combination of piano, guitar and soothing vocals to coat the whole album in good vibes, such as "So Long Frank Lloyd Wright" and the parts of "The Boxer" that suddenly add the brass section.
Beautiful swansong https://youtube.com/shorts/QUh64V1q5-0
excellent sunday morning listen. *almost* redeems paul simon?? loses an entire star for the hand clap live track
Earworm stuff, but requires new, less mellow interpretation.
4.5/5 - Soft, emotional, folksy roots - Reflective and quiet - Dreamy, symphonic elements - Easy uneasy resolution - Feels like the closing of a chapter
Good album
Always reminds me of Aunt Lu. Very 70s. Mostly all good songs.
Really beautiful album, Bridge Over Troubled Water is GOATed
# Album Name: Bridge over troubled water # Artist: Simon & Garfunkel # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Amazing opening track. Iconic. This was a very enjoyable album. I think it will grow even further on me over time. # Top Tunes: BOTW / The boxer / Cecilia # Would I listen to it again? Yes
Bridge Over troubled Water and The Boxer are a couple of the best songs ever written, but this album seems quite incohesive.
Just lovely
The good tracks are good, the rest are kind of filler. I listened to this one prior to Parsley, Sage Rosemary and Thyme. Its decent to good. Folk always seemed like some white-people-nonsense so maybe I never gave it a fair shake. (I realize the irony in that)
Superb. Maybe even a 5
What a great album, from bridge over troubled water, Cecilia, El condor pasa, the boxer.
I mean what can be said that hasn’t already about the opener?! Beautiful. Little drop off for the second track and then right back with ‘Cecilia.’ First time I’d noticed all the elements in it. Great song. Yeh, great album. Great energy and composition. Nice changes in tempo and feel between the songs, but all great songwriting and structure.
Masterpiece!
Lovely music
First one I have on vinyl. I'm also going this evening to sing Simon and garfunkel songs with chorus small groups. One that I'm quite familiar with but probably haven't really listened to enough. It's really good. The huge tracks are huge. The tracks you don't think of so much are excellent too. Must listen to more.
Good album, bit of a folk-contemporary pop vibe. Baby Driver feels a bit Beatles-esque, which considering this album's release date (1970), it might well be. I'd rate it a 7.5. Maybe it will grow more on me.
1999, little red corvette not bad
Obviously some legendary songs on this, but I was surprised by the amount of filler
Listened in the truck via YouTube music. The album gets more interesting as it goes along. Bridge Over Troubled Water definitely had cultural significance, but I find there’s a lot more interesting sounds. Cecilia, The Boxer, and of course The Only Living Boy In New York (personal favorite due to it being on the Garden State soundtrack). All in all a strong record.
Had never listened in full, really enjoyed
Almost all classics. I am not big into S&G but some of my faves on here. Only Living Boy in NY!
Got all the classics. Feel a bit short of being a top album.
It's great and has some timeless songs but I don't think it's their best and it sort of falls all over the place in the end. The Boxer remains majestic.
This might be a controversial opinion but Bridge over Troubled Water (the song) never really did it for me. El Condor Pasa, however, immediately makes me want to cry (in a good way) every time i listen to it.
Those harmonies are so gorgeous. A lot of great stuff here. One of my all time favourite songs is Bridge Over Troubled Water. That live song inclusion prevents this from being perfect. Stop clapping! 4.5/5
Cecilia. Catchy, men märklig text. Tokigt arrangemang. Keep the customer satisfied. Rockigare, helt ok So long Frank Lloyd Wright. Architects may come and go The boxer. Svängigt trams The only living boy in new York. Skivans bästa spår jämte titelspåret. Why don't you write me. Folk, Rockabilly och ska i fin blandning. Bye bye love. Ren utfyllnad. Borde utelämnats, särkilt som handlkappen är outhärdlig. Song for the asking. Bitterljuv melodi och stämmor. Albumet har helt klart sina toppar
Listened on the train home after 10 hour work day, so tired but feeling fairly positive. Much more familiar with songs from this album than the last. Hard to objectively listen to the title track and The Boxer as they are so embedded in public domain but clearly beautiful tracks and popular for good reason. Had no idea Cecilia was a S&G song (Suggs was pretty faithful to this version!). Not as slow-folk based as I thought it would be as an album, some more jazz infused upbeat songs, but obviously not without the odd flute solo. Not sure I'd return regularly, but would be interested in a deeper dive into the lyrics.
Good 4
bengr
Cecilia is my favorite off this album by far. I also like The Boxer. I hadn't heard the rest of the songs before, but they were alright. Cecilia alone brings this up to a 4 for me.
Good album, couple bangers, couple meh...
Bye Bye Love sticks out like the cheap cover it is but otherwise a very good album.
I've always felt like these guys sound best when it's as close to them and their guitars as possible, with some well placed additions that don't overwhelm that. SOME of their have always sounded like somebody decided they needed to add a bunch of garbage to the song to make them more radio friendly. That's the music business, I guess. That doesn't take away from the greatness of this one, just kinda makes me want to search out the versions without that stuff, though admittedly the producer was probably right, evidenced by the fact that we are listening to this one today. This is a great album of songwriting, some production quality that irks me in some ways, but a certified classic.
Well that’s the third and final of their albums for me on this list . An artist I had some familiarity with but hadn’t delved into and have now heard a bunch from . Surprisingly this became an artist I bonded with my mother on so it may stay in my playlists for some time . The album itself was beautiful , easily my fav of theirs and a true 5 contender . It’s peaceful soothing and still attention grabbing
better than I remembered from the past
The issue with this site is that I am always reluctant to give a 5* but I need to distinguish this with other albums I've given a (low) 4*. This is a fantastic album for me and really lived up to the mad hype that surrounds it, despite my reservations. But it's not quite 5*. So let's think of this 4* as a 4.5* rounded down. Cruel, but these sort of tough decisions are inevitable on a 5-point scale. The Boxer is a song that we did in choir in primary school, never consciously knew who it was by. Lovely surprise on listening, amazing throwback. Fun to read the history of the album's creation too!
Pleasantly orchestrated, pleasantly sung, pleasantly written, simply done, and just well made.
Classic
I was 18 when my new girlfriend played me this. I was quite enjoying it till she told me that it had been special to her and her ex, in fact it was “their” album! Anyway 40 years later I can take a slightly more mature approach and grudgingly admit it’s a classic.
I like the chilled vibe
Had a S&G "greatest hits" CD in my teens that contained a lot of these songs. Almost all remain straight up bangers, though the title track seems a little cringy to me now. In any case, the kind of album you can listen to on a road trip with your sister and mum with no complaints.
Really good album, i would totally listen again. Honestly totally embarassing for me not knowing that Cecilia was a song from this album and not by the vamps💀💀.
Not a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan but The Boxer is an amazing song. The rest of this album was pretty alright too. I'm feeling generous so I'll give this a 4.
Bridge over troubled water, El Condor Pasa, Cecilia, The Boxer....banger album!
An album that is undoubtedly well-produced and historically important. The sound is meticulously crafted, the arrangements are diverse, and there’s a clear sense of artistic ambition throughout. It’s easy to understand why this album became a classic. That said, the title track doesn’t resonate with me anymore. There’s something about its grandiose expression and emotional insistence that feels a bit forced. Over time, it has started to bore me, perhaps because it has become too iconic and overexposed. But as a whole, Bridge Over Troubled Water remains a strong and important record that deserves its place in music history. Not necessarily because every song still feels relevant today, but because it set new standards for what folk-pop could be. 4/5
Well, I'm definitely Team Paul. Arty is a great accompaniment, but his stuff kinda brings the album down a little. Still, this is one of the all-time great albums. Deserving of the list.
Iconic, although I always thought these white boys were some of the whiniest
4.5
love it to death
I could see how this would be a 5 star album to someone that really loves and connects with these songs and music, and while I do think there is great songwriting, I feel like a lot of it comes out pretty "toothless," even for folk. The arrangements and way the songs are done don't go far enough to truly display the work, which I think some other artists' covers of these songs has since corrected.
Another biased review as I'm a big Simon & Garfunkel fan. Lots of good tracks on this album, including my favourite song of their's "The Only Living Boy In New York". The harmonies they do are perfection.
A great and emotional record. A variety of unusual instruments were used here, and it worked out well. The vocals are superb, and the songwriting is amazing. Favourite Track(s): Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Baby Driver, The Boxer Least Favourite Track(s): Why Don't You Write Me
Great album, it’s a classic for a reason
An achievement in recording for the time.
There are so many huge hits here, and the album is almost flawless. The track "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was used a lot in various forms at church growing up, and reading about gospel as its inspiration makes sense. I love "El Condor Pasa", though similarly, that is also ripped off Peruvian musicians. I suppose impactful folk music always has its predecessors and inspiration to get there. The highlights are the true Simon originals of "The Boxer" and "The Only Living Boy in New York". 4.5 but there's something about Garfunkel's and Simon's vocals, though beautiful, that doesn't resonate with me as much I would like, similar to Joni Mitchell.
this is our fourth paul simon album, the second in 3 days, and we still havent gotten an album from so many classic artists that i know have multiple on the list. i know its random but i wish there were a way to space out artists with multiple albums. now that im done complaining, this album is so much better than bookends. if we had more than a day between the two this couldve possibly gotten a 5 but i really didnt want to listen to s&g again so soon and it put me in a sour mood.
Loved the Boxer. Particular fave
