This is a GREAT album (with a BAD cover photo)! It contains many of S&G's best-known songs: "Bridge Over Troubles Water", "El Condor Pasa", "Cecilia", "Keep The Customer Satisfied" and "The Boxer". These songs make the album worth anyone's time alone. The album is paced a bit unevenly, as all the big songs are to be found in the first half. The last couple of tracks fail to reach the same hights, but are a nice listen nonetheless. The track order is the problem here. BOTW would have worked much better as the final track. In it's place, The Boxer would have been a fitting opener. El Condor Pasa's ideal place would be the beginning of side two. And the weaker songs could have been mashed in between. I have seldom seen a running order that was just so wrong on multiple levels, but there it is. Oh, well, it's still a great album. 4/5

Another masterpiece from rhe genius Paul Simon, marred only by the presence of Art Garfunkel..

I didn't realize that DJ Shadow sampled from this album. Now I gotta go back and listen to some of his earlier stuff! I digress. These guys had an uncanny creative sensibility because this album is back-to-back earworms. The album doesn't seem to follow any particular theme as it bounces between subdue (i.e. 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright', and 'The Boxer') or bubbly and bright (i.e. 'Cecilia', 'Keep the Customer Satisfied', and 'Baby Driver') tracks, but they ultimately blend together nicely into a well rounded collection. It's a solid album from start to finish that has endured for 50 years, and I'm sure it will hold it's beloved status for another 50, and then some.

One of my all time favorite albums. Always a comfort to listen to.

Garfunkel may be a good singer, but these songs are nothing special. Most are either simple guitar or piano melodies or your average folk-rock-something tunes.

This was a big album back in my grade school days. Our babysitters were teenagers and would be listening on their portable transistor radios

What can I say that I didn't on the last S&G album. They are good guys but a little too folksy for my playlists. Fun to listen in the background especially hearing The Boxer from Mumford and Sons (who I think probably did it better). And did Baby Driver make it's way into the movie? Look, S&G are no different than Penn and Teller, or any other duo that you don't know who is who but you do know who they are, the tall einstein one and the short monty python one. Love the album cover too as it adds to that mystery.

Another great album! We've had a few from Simon sans Garfunkel, this is our first from the legendary duo. It's definitely one of their most acclaimed, and there are plenty of jams on here that I enjoyed, including ones I haven't heard before. But those I have are definite classics, like "The Boxer," the title track, and the cover of the Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love." Great harmonies from these guys, and just excellent songwriting and instrumentation. Always a pleasant experience. Favorite tracks: Cecilia, The Boxer, Baby Driver, Bridge Over Troubled Water, So Long Frank Lloyd Wright. Album art: Iconic for sure, and I will never get over how funny Art's position behind Paul is. He looks like a shadow, a demon. Maybe he's just being cheeky, or maybe it's a metaphor for how often forgotten and left behind is as the world praises Paul Simon (let's be honest, we're probably not getting a solo Garfunkel record on this list). 4.5/5

The title track is part of the modern canon, but there's so many versions they all merge together - not sure I've ever heard the album version before; it's definitely WAY overproduced and quite weak compared to more pared down covers. Discovered a DJ Shadow sample on El Condor Pasa too! Hiding in plain sight. I enjoyed this in the main but not something I'd ever choose to listen to

No need to even think on this one as it's been one of my favourites for many years and almost every track is a solid gem. The last 3 tracks are my least favourites. Of course there will be people who feel it dated or don't like folk inspired music but this has two of the greatest songs ever written. An even better thing is that this isn't even their best album in my rating. That came 2 years before.

Goosebumps. I cannot find a better description of my feelings about this album. Incredibly soothing, relaxing music. Unforgettable, one-of-a-kind vocals, wonderful arrangements and splendid mastering. The live segment is a cherry on top. I'm grateful for this recommendation. Znałem wcześniej praktycznie tylko Baby Drivera z tego albumu i byłem pewien, że cały będzie utrzymany w podobnym tonie. Ogromne zaskoczenie, bo większość płyty to utwory wolniejsze, smutniejsze, bardziej melancholijne. Absolutnie jednak to nie przeszkadza, utwory szybsze i wolniejsze są poprzeplatane, do tego wrzucony jeden live ze świetnym przejściem do kolejnego utwory, mastering płytki świetny i tak naprawdę nie mam się do czego przyczepić, słucha się swietnie. Na uwagę na pewno zasługują wszystkie weselsze i szybsze utwory - Cecilia, Baby Driver i Keep the Customer Satisfied (które ma praktycznie najmniej odsłuchów na Spotify, a moim zdaniem jest topowym utworem z albumu).

Pierwsze 3 utwory złoto, dalej różnie. Słucha się bardzo przyjemnie. 4.5/5

It’s well known Paul Simon picks album tracks with Mad Libs - There’s no other way to get a bossa nova song about Frank Lloyd Wright. Anyways, love the hits could take or leave the rest.

I mean what is there to say? This is one of the most iconic albums of all time. Every single track is among the most famous modern american folk songs ever written. Even if you've never heard these songs before you've DEFINITELY heard them. And they're perfect.

I like this album. A lot of very pleasant songs to listen to. The Frank Lloyd Wright one was pretty weird. My favorite song that I didn’t already know was The Only Living Boy In New York. They always make me think of IB film class because The Graduate was the first movie we ever watched.

I heard this a lot growing up. My closest friend's Mom played it over and over on an old stereo console that was a large piece of furniture. Perhaps because I heard it over and over I became enamored with the deeper cuts as opposed to very well known title track and The Boxer. The Only Living Boy in New York, Baby Driver and Keep the Customer Satisfied stuck with me then and still do today. In many ways, the seeds of much of what Paul Simon created in the 70s and 80s can all be found on this record. Superb.

How can you not like an album that starts off with a song that has become part of the American Standards songbook and also includes one of the greatest "story songs" -- The Boxer? Great orchestration throughout. Keep the Customer Satisfied is an underappreciated song. I wish you could award 1/2 stars. I'd like to rate this 4.5 but since I can't, it gets 5 stars from me.

This album is a great argument for why you should go out on the top of your game. Every song on here is good. The Boxer, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, and Cecilia are enough to give any album at least a 3.5 but it was all great. Beautiful arrangements, interesting Melodies and lyrics which create a story you want to follow. So good, just wish it had been remastered.

Without this site I definitely wouldn’t have listened to it ( not that i hate it it’s just not my normal kinda thing i go for). I am so grateful that I herd it though cause it’s a really good folk rock album I recommend it to anyone really: Side one is my favourite starting with the title track what a song! I really like that the album starts with the only piano centric song, also it has to have one of my favourite chorus’s and those explosion sounds at the end are good as well. El condor pasa is my least favourite from this for me having a better intro then actual song. The three next songs Cecelia to so long frank loyd wright are great more specifically; Cecelia is a really well placed single and I love all the hand claps at the start. Keep the customer satisfied has great orchestral instruments ( sorry i’am bad at naming these bits) and So long frank loyd wright is a great pace changer and a great closer to side one ; but when side two starts the boxer comes on you know you’re in for a treat! Everything from the lyrical highs of the verses and the simple but effective chorus just show brilliance a definite favourite for me. I like the lyrics and the samples on baby driver but musically it’s really not a favourite of mine. The only living boy in New York sounds a lot more gloomy in the verses and I like how it briefly explodes into the more optimistic chorus. Why don’t you write me isn’t my least favourite on here but its the only one I would call a little bit filler-ish and i do like the horns on it and the fade out works for bye bye loves live cheering. Speaking of… i’am not huge on bye bye love as a song but I like that they used a live version which makes the handclaps sound so much better. I love how bye bye loves cheering goes into song for asking which is good but its short length makes it quite unsatisfying for me.

5.0 - Another near-perfect gem from S&G. It starts with the title track, performed almost as a simple lullaby and sung tenderly with naked conviction. Other evergreen favorites include "Cecilia" and "The Boxer." One surprising standout for me is "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright", a tribute to the late architect - so endearingly light-hearted quirky.

Most of the songs were amazing and I have heard of them before. The ones I haven't heard were also very good. Recommend album to all.

Tonally, this album is a little strange, combining two of the most profound pop songs ever recorded with a hodgepodge of styles that sometimes work, and sometimes don't. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "The Boxer" are both such hauntingly beautiful songs, they practically bear the weight of the whole album. It almost doesn't matter what the other songs are. There are a few other solid songs on here though. "El Cóndor Pasa" and "Song for the Asking" are both incredibly pretty, and Cecilia is simply one of the most fun, exuberant songs ever put to record. The rest of the songs are a mixed bag, with some interesting creative excursions and some borderline hokey pop-rockers. The live "Bye Bye Love" cover is a head scratcher as to why they included it. Overall I really enjoyed the album, but it teeters on the line between being eclectic and being unfocused. It should come to no one's surprise that it was Simon & Garfunkel's last studio album, but what a way to go out. The clarity and feeling of Paul Simon's vocals on Bridge over Troubled Water and The only living Boy in New York makes me wish that i was around when this album was originally released. The harmonisation of both Simon and Garfunkel is perfect

An extremely solid album from beginning to end. The overall quality does ebb and flow, but the quality is never poor - you either have excellent tracks like 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'Cecilia', 'The Boxer', or 'The Only Living Boy in New York', or tracks that are thoroughly enjoyable.

This was different from my expectations 1. Less vocal harmonies overall than I would expect from S&G. 2. More orchestration as well, and variation in orchestration across songs. 3. Bridge over Troubled Water is just a decent song. I liked the rest of the album more. 4. Cecilia is a banger. 5. Why Don't You Write Me is also a banger, and I was surprised to see it the least-listened-to song on the album (according to Spotify). It reminded me of late Beatles output. Very good album. I'd give it a 3.7/5 if I could.

Bridge Over Troubled Water is just fantastic. Dramatic and epic. Their signature vocal harmonies are very nice. Some of the songs are a little goofy but enjoyable still. Lost me in the middle with some snoozers.

On the one hand, I'm already growing weary of getting so many boomer rock LPs in a row. I'm ready to hit basically anything else next. On the other, I think that Paul Simon's compositions and Art Garfunkel's angelic voice are as perfect of a musical pairing as will ever exist. I have too much love for their music to be very objective, but I'll admit that the album peaks with "The Boxer", and that last third mostly kind of coasts. That's not great for such a short album, but at the same time, I wouldn't call anything on here remotely bad. And at its best, this is pop folk at its highest form. A

Definitely an album that is an important landmark among classics like Sgt. Pepper and Are You Experienced? Simon & Garfunkel isn't in my usual rotation but made me a fan. Definitely for fans of the Beatles, Beach Boys and The Zombies.

I really think this is one of the most American records ever made. There are a lot of quintessential American music ideas on this album that combine to create an extremely soulful record you just wouldn’t see today.

Nice vocals harmonies, as expected, and it is pretty easy to hear their influence on so much music that came after them, but the songs themselves aren't really doing much for me.

I can see why this is popular and I can appreciate this for what it was at the time, but this is so goddamn sleepy. I have zero interest in listening again. 1/5

I feel like maybe if I had lived in this era as a young adult I’d really vibe with this, but alas I didn’t. Not really my cup of tea, but not all of them can be.

Love this album. A couple of bum tracks keep it from being a five star album, but the hits have been hits for 70 years for a reason. Love El Condor Pasa and Cecilia! What was it about those 60s/70s women, sleeping around?

I'd got it in my head that that was a Phil Spector production and was always put off by how reverb soaked the title track was. Turns out Simon just wanted to sound like this. Listening to it through, I realize that I like a load of this album, just none of the Spector-inspired, echo chamber stuff. Still, it's no Bookends, but it's got great music on it. This is definitely in 3.5 territory, but I'll bump it down based on me probably not coming back to it any time soon.

It's beautiful but also a bit sad. I feel in a melancholy mood could cry to The Boxer and the title track. But there are also happy songs like Baby Driver and Celilia which make it a rollercoaster of emotions. Paul Simon's songwriting is usually great, and both his and Art Garfunkels vocals transform the tracks to another level. I used to listen to Simon and Garfunkel solely through their Essential CD and all but Why Don't You Write To Me were on it, which is a good indication of how great this album is.

This is some seriously hippy-dippy bullshit and the fact that I still love it means that it gets a 5. I feel like the title song, one degree to the left or right, just becomes too dumb to live. But right where it is, is perfect. Also, the album art has always made Garfunkel look like he's got a massive fu manchu. But it's also got three or four all-time great songs ever written, at least.

My goodness, so many good songs here. And so many that I didn't realise I knew. Pick of the bunch is 'Baby Driver', but I'm wondering - did these guys pioneer noise gated drums? Otherwise, what is that snare sound on the title track and 'The Boxer'? What an achievement. Going to go buy a physical copy of this bad boy post haste.

Yeah, kinda hard to argue with the sheer songwriting chops on this mofo. Every single song gives you something new to savor in a way that's different from the song that preceded it without doing a genre tour or trying to put on hats that do not fit. Which is extra good, because I don't think a lot of hats are going to fit on that big ol' Garfunkel doo anyway, amirite? Bonus points for inspiring at least two movie titles.

I can understand why S & G broke up, a folk duo can only do so much. This album kind of tells that. I mean, once you hear the fist song (the title track) there really isn't anywhere to go from there. I really think they should have put this as the last song, as it gives a bigger finish to the album. As an opener, it's like... great, NOW what? Most of the other songs are not on a level of that first one, although some do come close: "The Boxer" being one. "Cecilia" I have heard WAY too many times for some reason. So yeah, I had heard this album a good deal, I just think shooting your wad with the title track makes it tough to go on afterwards.

The title track is just incredible, one of my favorite of all time. And legitimizes Art Garfunkel's contribution to the album. I didn't remember that it was also the first track, which seems like strange timing/organization. Feels like it should be the closer on either side one or two. The Boxer would be a great lead in to it. That is also an incredible song. Paul Simon is just a super talented writer and composer. The poetry in these soaring songs is great, but so is his biting observation in some of the more upbeat pieces - I forgot how much fun and witty Keep the Customer Satisfied Was. Baby Driver also super fun (a little less witty) and Cecilia was fun at one point in its life. But really, why not an upbeat side (3, 4, 7, 9, 10) and a subdued side (8, 2, 5, 6, 11, 1) to the album? Or slowly build up the pace before walking it back down again? Probably being too critical here, it's a pretty great work of art.

An absolute classic. This album is very much of its time, but the songs are SO good. Some of the songs sound better in subsequent live versions. I found myself watching The Concert in Central Park after listening to this - Garfunkel singing Bridge Over Troubled Water in that concert was possibly his crowning moment. Similarly, The Boxer is one of my favorite songs of all time (I love playing it on guitar), but I prefer subsequent live versions (check out the Concert in Hyde Park for a great version). Regardless of version, I get chills every time I hear "In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade/and he carries the reminders/ of every glove that laid him down or cut him till he cried out in his anger and his shame/ "I am leaving, I am leaving" but the fighter still remains." What a moment. Plenty of other great moments: El Condor Pasa takes you somewhere else. This is the first time I listened to the original version by Los Incas which sounds almost identical except the Los Incas version is an instrumental and has a bit of craziness in the last minute. Cecilia is a classic and Keep the Customer Satisfied is a fun little rockabilly song. Baby Driver is a fun classic-sounding rock n roll song (I even originally thought it was a cover, but it's not). The Only Living Boy in NY is a good track - I like the overlaid vocals in that one. The only tracks I find (relatively) weak are So Long Frank Lloyd Wright and Why Don't You Write Me. They could have ended with the live version of Bye Bye Love since it's a callback to their early days and the influence of the Everly Brothers. But Song for the Asking is a nice touch and perhaps it's poignant that the last Simon & Garfunkel album ends on a song that almost sounds like Simon is singing alone (I can barely hear Garfunkel in it). In fact, that's consistent with the cover - Paul Simon appears to be eclipsing Art Garfunkel. It makes sense...Paul Simon wrote pretty much all the music for Simon & Garfunkel and it was time for him to move on, leading to an amazing career. Great album.

Love it so much. One of my favorite folk albums. My favorite Simon album for sure. I love the harmonious yet natural vocals, the beautiful and often dramatic accompaniment, and the insane songwriting that beats anything anyone was able to come up with until then. Insane to think Simon pretty much wrote it all alone. Half the album is full of insane strongs that define the era... The Boxer, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Cecelia... I don't want to imagine what music wouldn't exist if these tracks never existed. El Condor Pasa and The Only Living Boy in New York are two other masterpieces, albeit not as essential. The other three tracks up to that point are also really good. Only complaint is that the last 3 songs are kinda weak, but I still sorta like them. Making the cover "Bye Bye Love" live was an interesting choice. "Song for the Asking" is such a serene, quiet, and snappy closer you don't even notice until it's over. Regardless, those last 7 minutes isn't enough to deduct from a full score.

There are some cracking tunes on this album. Bridge Over Troubled Water is not one of them. Do yourself a favour and skip the first track. Promise it gets better.

The others are a either too soft or features too much or basic harmonizing for my taste. Maybe I'm just confusing that with Paul Simon's ego. Good enough. My parents had this in their collection. A staple of the late 60's I suppose.

The title track gets much attention, but it actually might be my least favorite on the album. For me, "The Boxer" and "Only Living Boy in New York" are far more interesting.

Even the non-hits on this album are rich in both their lyrics and their musical stylings. And the hits are monstrous. Both The Boxer and Bridge... are quintessential folk-pop anthems that never get old for me. Only Living Boy... is an emotion-packed lament for one's individuality. If I Could and Cecilia bring the janky rhythms and off-beat instrumentation of world music to the fore, scoring on both points. There's no denying the influence and staying power of this album.

Bridge Over Troubled Water is one of my favorite songs (the way it builds!), The Boxer is one of only songs I could remember all the words to when I was sleep-deprived and blearily rocking my infants to sleep in the middle of night, and Cecilia just always makes me happy.

Of all the Simon and Garfunkel albums, this is THE one. What a way to end the duo’s run! The title track just feels so intimate. They mix intimate with higher energy songs well. Cecilia and The Boxer are two old favorites of mine to sing along to. There are several songs with which I was previously unfamiliar with good energy: Baby Driver, Keep The Customers Satisfied, and Bye Bye Love where the crowd clapping along takes it to another level.

I will be honest, and say I'm still not and have never been impressed with "Bridge over Troubled Water". Ofcourse, on this album you'll find several pop classics, but this album is far from a masterpiece. The title-track itself, and quite a few other songs, are immensely overproduced kitsch in my ears. Violins, choirs and the lot. There's a few plus points to the album as well ofcourse. Songs like 'The Only Living Boy In New York' is beautiful, but it doesn't save the album. It feels it's an album on multiple thoughts and might be known as one of the all-time classics. But not for me.

genuinely thought that Cecilia was a Suggs original. never had a reason to think it was a cover. which brings me to the conclusion that yeah they do write a very good song. the problem is that their versions of the song are a bit shit. get someone else to do it. I'd genuinely rather listen to Suggs do a cod reggae version.

I like biting little tits. They break off in my mouth easily and are very crunchy. This record reminds me on biting little tits.

An awesome album, very consistent throughout and the changes in tone are well navigated. Loved the big hits, and loved discovering the other gems throughout. The harmonies and story telling are just excellent. Special shoutout to Only Living Boy in New York for being incredible.

I love Simon and Garfunkel (and Paul Simon solo), and this album has so many great hits on it. Bridge Over Troubled Water, Cecilia, The Boxer are all greatest hits, but my lesser known favourites are Keep the Customer Satisfied and Song for the Asking.

Some may decide to give this album only 3 star and thats so unfortunate because I think it's an easy 5 stars.

A perfect album. Simon and Garfunkel saved their best effort for last. There isn't a bad song on the album. Although there were some huge hits, my favorite song on the album is The Only Living Boy in New York. I loved the song even before I knew what it was about, but when I learned that it was basically Paul Simon giving Garfunkel his blessing to go pursue a film career it made me love it that much more. 5 stars.

Fantastic album. So many unforgettable classics in one place, it's unbelievable. Not surprisingly the songwriting is top notch but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be either Baby Driver or the title track.

Well, it has a few drop dead classics on it (title track, The Boxer, Cecilia), but is it generally just well-produced filler? Not so deep as it seems? It's not a surprise that it sold 25 bazillion copies, 'cause there's not much here to offend. great melodies, terrific harmonies, fantastically produced album. Glad I listened, but I feel no need to own.

love it. :) the live recording is a bit weird being in there, especially since the quality is noticably worse than the rest of the album. though, it transitions into the final track pretty well. that does mess up stuff when listening to that one track, though. overall, good. fav track: bridge over troubled water / cecilia

bangers, couple of weird ones in the middle to keep it interesting

Some classics but also some really dreary tracks that I'm not here for

I don't know what else to say other than it was fine. Feels like an album you need to be in a specific mood for and I couldn't meet it there.

'The Only Living Boy in New York' might be the standout track for me on an album that is almost the perfect definition of pleasant background music, so much so that I hadn't realised it had finished until a song on the artist radio got my attention. Unlikely to deliberately put on again but absolutely wouldn't switch off if it was playing.

Finally, reprive from the curse of the Spotify remasters! This is easy for me, grew up on this album. I love it. People used to dunk on Simo and G-funk for being twee, but after two decades of Mumford and Sons and Sigur Ross I find it much easier to situate these two dorks in some kind of post-psychedelic what-were-our-roots-again, maybe-sometimes-ringo-was-right tradition, like Harvey Nillson. Also, my Anna once went to a Halloween party as this album cover - she wore Paul's clothes and made a cutout of Art's head to wear like a headband. It was great. Happy memory (I went as Animals, with battersea headpiece and tiny pig on a wire). standout track - only living boy in new york

Sad... Sad... Oh Cecilia! Meh... Sad.. Sad... This is an album to listen to whilst staring into nothingness, but I'll be honest, there isn't a single track on this album which doesn't have a cover that is 100% better than the version on this album.

I found it hard to get into the right mood to properly enjoy this album - I eventually got there while staring at a troubled bridge over some disappointingly calm water, and it was only then I could properly appreciate the litany of hits this album has to offer. It didn't quite do enough to make it to one of my favourites, but it came close.

Very pleased to see this album show up today. I usually listen to Bookends, but absolutely love me some Simon and Garfunkel. Aw heck and now I want to give the Graduate yet another re-watch. Gotta be 5/5 for me every time.

Amazing, bringing back memories

Did not expect to get something I've already known so soon as the thrid in the journey! Bridge over Troubled Water itself is one of my all-time favourites since 2007, although it was introduced to me in 2005 and was not a "love at the first sight". Words are touching, music is full of love and expanding energy. Learnt all the words by heart and was encouraged by it numerous times. For this song itself this album deserves a 5. Love the duo all the time since teenage years. Other songs in this album were no strangers nor disappointments. Elegant, witty folk songs.

A loved album for a long time.

I’ve never been a fan of S&G but glad I was “forced” to listen to a whole album. Overall, not too bad. Started off too slow. I still probably won’t be going back to S&G anytime soon. Still, not too bad of an album.

It was ok.

One I can listen to on vinyl today! So you can imagine that I already have quote a strong bias towards it. I can't really approach something I love like this with a critical eye. So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright is the weakest track, I guess? It has Bridge, Cecilia, The Boxer, Baby Driver, El Condor Pasa, The Only Living Boy and Baby Driver. 7 of the 11 tracks would make a best of. That kind of hit rate is ridiculous.

Albumet var delvis harmoniskt att lyssna på. Sången var det som gjorde det främsta arbetet enligt mig. Det instrumentala var funktionellt men inte ideellt. För mig var det till och med själsdödande. Det var lyssnebart och till och med lite njutsamt men samtidigt var det medioker, förglömligt och meningslöst. Efter att jag hörde albumet hade jag inga tankar eller åsikter och behövde anstränga mig för att tvinga fram synpunkter tills jag kom på att det var den passande synpunkten.

I enjoyed this album. Was solid from start to finish, my favourite song from it being Cecelia. Some of the other tracks didn't really stand out to me, though.

Less cohesive than bookends or sounds of silence but interesting compositions (el condor, Cecilia, the boxer) and unique transitions (customer satisfied). These two love making music together and it’s always fun and interesting from soft melodies to large crescendos or cannons. Bridge over, el condor, the boxer,

A classic, no doubt about it. Simon and Garfunkel's last album before the tension was too much and they went their separate ways, lending an atmosphere of melancholy, hurt and reconciliation (which ultimately wasn't to be) to the lyrics. It makes for therapeutic, cathartic listening, and that's saying nothing of the music itself: some of the most gorgeous songs recorded. The title track fully deserves a place in the pantheon of 20th century pop standards, "The Only Living Boy in New York" sends waves of gorgeous harmonies crashing against the shore, and "The Boxer" would be a career highlight for any folk singer-songwriter: here it's just one of many killer tracks. It's not all melancholy separation music, though: one of my main surprises first hearing this was how S&G continued to develop right to the end, pushing the envelope further from their rule-book in genre and sound. "Keep The Customer Satisfied" is a driving, brass-laden slice of soul-pop that shoots for Motown. "Baby Driver" is the most engaging, carefree Beach Boys homage since "Back in the USSR." There are exercises in Peruvian folk, bossa nova and the giddy joy of "Cecilia." If I had any quibbles, it's that the album threatens to tail off at the end: "Why Don't You Write Me" doesn't come on as strong as the wave of excellency before it, and "Bye Bye Love" is a head-scratching live addition with intrusive crowd noise. However, the plaintive "Song for the Asking" redeems it, giving a tender send-off to the pair's partnership. Above all, this is a winning combination of intricate, wry lyrics, inspired and varied arrangements, and accessible melodies beautifully sung. I'm so glad to have it in my collection.

A tour de force

Opens with an absolute banger, so many songs on this album I didn't realise were them. It's incredible on first listen, will be listening again

Simon & Garfunkel's fifth & final album together released in 1970 and was their best and most effortless. This folk rock album contains some of their greatest hits and is certified 8 times platinum. This album also won 'Album of the Year' at the Grammy's. You can almost hear their impending break up in the musical production of the album, but at least they went out with a bang. Also, not my type of music at all, but still good.

Weirdly I got this album and Bookends back to back, forcing a comparison between two albums by the same artist. I rank them - and Graceland, the other Paul Simon album that's been generated so far - about the same. I like Paul Simon as a songwriter quite a bit, but to me he never cracks the ceiling into greatness. All of these albums hover around 3.75 for me, with Graceland probably being the best overall, but I do like the echoey, doomy drums on the title track of this album and The Boxer. They always felt weirdly industrial, an odd backdrop for folksy 60s music, almost like a precursor for some of Swans' 90s albums like White Light From the Mouth of Infinity or The Great Annihilator. That's a pretty left field association to make, and the average Simon and Garfunkel fan isn't probably going to find much tonal similarity to latch onto the majestic but joyless music of Swans, but these are my observations.

Not the biggest fan of Simon & Garfunkel. 4 stars for Cecilia, my favorite song of theirs.

I forgot how SHORT this album is. Clocking in at under 40 minutes and that includes a live track. Not to be missed.

Up until the second to last track this would be a perfect 5/5. The songs and arrangements (especially the lovely instrumental details in the arrangements) are fantastic and the title track as well as The Boxer are masterpieces of songs, with El Condor Pasa not far behind. The perfect score is only marred by the live track Bye Bye Love which would already easily and by far be the worst song if it were not a live arrangement. The audience noise is a jarring contrast to the rest of the album's serene beauty and crystal clear production. I'll still round it up to a 5, but I really wish that track weren't on there.

On paper I hate this, and most of it does indeed suck-diddly-uck flanders, but I found myself liking bits of it. The Boxer is an undeniably good song, same with the title track. The rest of it ranged from boring to passable. 2.5/5.

top notch hangover cure

ok i've got my nostalgia goggles on for sure but this is great, full of stellar songwriting. this album features some of the best s&g songs period. i never noticed how cool the chords in so long frank lloyd wright are. even though i love it, can't give it a perfect score bc it has some more forgettable tracks and i've always found El Condor Pasa to be a little heavy handed. 9/10

I'm not sure if I've heard this album all the way through or not. There are several tracks I can sing along with, and just as many that seemed like a first listen. I like Simon and Garfunkel. I would choose to listen to this album again.

Who doesn't love a little S&G?

My god, I get goose bumps every time I hear Garfunkel’s soaring, angelic vocals over the swelling orchestra in the crescendo of the opening track. Not many albums can do that from the get go. And whilst nothing quite matches the title track, there are some pretty, entertaining, witty and lyrical songs here to enjoy and luxuriate in the harmonies.

Ovviamente aspettavo i vecchi S&G al varco. Il biondo c'ha veramente 'na faccia di merda.

Nice enough, but certainly didn't love it. In fact, there were a few tracks I didn't really like at all (El Condor Pasa, for one). It feels like they really nailed it with Bookends, but went too far with the production on this record and it just ends up a bit of a mess at times.

Gorgeous, heartbreaking, one-of-a-kind...this and Bookends are my favorite S&G works ever!!!

Close to a perfect album. The Only Living Boy In New York and The Boxer are two of my all time favorite songs. So good it doesn't even lose points for being my ex-mother-in-law's favorite album. Art of course was given his moment to shine on the title track. This is a surprisingly easy 5.

What a great album; choc full of songs that have become "standards" The Boxer competes with The Sound of Silence as my favorite S & G song. What always takes me aback is how these guys can ROCK, as they are known as siger-songwriters/folk stars. But to me bands like Wilco and the Shins owe them a huge debt. Favorite tracks; El Condor Passa Celia The Boxer The Only Living Boy in New York ...and of course the title track. 5 🌟

Not only does this album represent the best of Simon & Garfunkel, it also looks ahead to Paul Simon's later work in exploring Latin American and African music. As always, the harmonies are tight, and Simon's lyrics are among the best in the American songbook. On a personal note, Simon & Garfunkel always make me feel nostalgic in a way I can't quite put my finger on. One of the greatest duos of all time.

Absolutely fabulous album from start to finish

I have an abiding dislike for Paul Simon and this didn't do much to change that, but it was still worth a listen. Seems like they tried to break the mold a bit by sampling some other genres and adding some different instrumentation, but still to much fetishization of the voices at the expense of other elements.

Good album. These two have great harmonies and instrumentals. Their styles is not really my cup of tea but great overall album.

I didnt know the song BOTW had a second half. That song gave me shivers. The rest was great but not totally my cup of tea.

Jaunty, catchy, tender, undeniable. Love the big builds and orchestral climaxes. Can hear the origins of stomp-clap music, and AJR-slop. But this still has all its stitches and seams visible. Classic

The piano in bridge over troubled water is beautiful wow. The chords are great. I used to not really like Simon and Garfunkel but I recently listened to bookends and I really loved it. I’m glad I’m listening to another album of theirs. I loved that album.

This album is tough to judge. It has some very good tracks and some that don't do anything for me - and I'm not sure the ones I like are the ones that are critically acclaimed. Definitely not my favorite Simon & Garfunkel, but still worth a listen.

I'm generally a fan, but probably haven't heard this album as much as their earlier ones, nor as much as Paul Simon's solo records. It's good. Less folk and more soft rock. Lots of stuff that Simon would develop later on his own. I don't think this is a high point of his career, and I definitely prefer "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" (which is also on the 1001 list). However, it's still got the S&G magic. I never understood how a live cover song made it onto this album. It doesn't belong at all.

Bye bye love feels like it was shoehorned in, plus I think Bridge Over Troubled Water should surely be at the end of the album (doesn't feel like an opening track). However this is an undeniable gem of an album.

Number of classics in here. The Boxer is one of my favs. Worth the 4 star alone.

In simulated reality created by sentient machines, A program designed to investigate the human psyche once said “Everything that has a beginning has an end” and when the end”. This was the end of some of musics most iconic hairstyle silhouettes partnership, but when the ends comes the best we can all hope for is that it is on a high. Just like a suit from Savile from, this album is tailored to near perfection, Head to toe, Start to finish. An album that “suits” any occasion any emotion and any slow motion montage of performing artist we have lost this year. As a new decade begins,A cry of the British capital is calling in the distance with teenagers getting there kicks all thinking they can be hero’s. The 60s sound is starting to look for property’s on the coast, Leaving us with this one last gift. Safe in the knowledge that for many years to come Frank Sinatra will have competition for the most played song at a cremation.

I wonder where belle and Sebastian got their sound from? Oh yeah this. Weak streak lately.

Reminded me of Fleetwood Mac at times. Definitely high-quality songwriting, so rich in ideas. Mainly acoustic, but it also incorporates strings, flutes, brass. Bridge over troubled water is a masterpiece of a song.

Pretty quiet, but enough interesting rhythms to make it okay. Also, a couple of familiar/pleasant songs. 3/5.
