The backing tunes aren't at all bad except some annoying bloke keeps talking over the top of them.

Not my thing, I get there's talent but I think even this more nuanced or intelligent gangster rap still fundamentally is situated in a hyper masculine point of view that I'm never going to connect with. 2

Thought about not voting. I get it he's not a gangster, but brought up in that environment. Still not comfortable with the vibe and language.

Not my kind of hip hop

Me like old rap. Me not like new rap. Three or four decent songs in over an hour is a poor return on investment. Compton is the best song by far. Real, m.A.A.d city, and, surprisingly (because Drake), Poetic Justice were the other good songs. Most of the time, I enjoyed the phone conversations about dominoes more enjoyable than the songs. Almost every chorus is terrible and annoying. The list of producers is longer than the phone book. 3/10

123/1089 - I never got the appeal of Kendrick. My favorite hip-hop is "A Tribe Called Quest" and East Coast rap. I mainly like the jazzy beats and swung vocal delivery. With that out of the way, I'm willing to give this album another shot. After listening, I dislike the skits and don't understand why hip-hop artists put them in (De La Soul being an exception because they at least add music to it). Kendrick doesn't look like OJ, that's as delusional as Soulja Boy's "bitch I look like Gohan" lyric. Some songs seem fine but he ruins it with his best Squidward impression on the choruses. Overall I didn't like it but I'm glad I listened to this.

I can honestly say I've tried to get into Kendrick because of friends who swear he's the greatest. I never heard of him in 2012. Is it the lyrics or storytelling? I don't judge a song on lyrics alone and can I really relate to a hip hop guy? The music backing him up is just above average. The listener counts are staggering. "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe" which sounds like an alien singing is so basic and weak but it has nearly a billion listens, wtf? No song has fewer than 91M listens and there are tracks with 519M ("Backstreet Freestyle"), 743M ("Poetic Justice"), 930M ("MAAD City") and 2.3B ("Money Trees"). I got nothing from any of these songs, no urge to hear it a second time, no slipping into the groove, no clever lyric I thought was memorable... I'm convinced there's voodoo going on, an imbedded subliminal message that slow minds hook on to and make them want to hear this drivel over and over. 2 stars, it's better than some rap/hip hop but it's either too new for me or I just don't get what he's selling.

It grew on me as the album progressed and it was just the second half I'd rate it a lot higher but I found some of the early songs genuinely difficult to listen to and that brings down the whole album for me. Really interesting storytelling happening but enough misogyny that I just couldn't enjoy it. A man saying bitch that much will always bring me out of the listening experience. No issue with the rapper/lyrics/content. But the too heavy boom bap bass and the few and far between samples didn't do anything for me. At some point (I think probably 1995 or 96) rap passed me by and moved into it's next phase. Everything has to change and evolve, that's the way it should be. But it doesn't strike me the same even with a super talented rapper like KL.

I don't know if I've mellowed to Kendrick, or if it's actually a better album, but I didn't dislike this nearly as much as To Pimp a Butterfly - still very much in the "not for me" camp though. Apparently he had a good Superbowl show though, so that's good for him I guess?

I liked to Pimp a Butterfly, but this was hard work. Falling into rap stereotypes, the misogyny in particular put me off. Musically, it didn't do much for me either. It didn't make me actively angry, more disappointed as Kendrick is supposed to be the gold standard of rap - a bit like when I tried to listen to Kanye West's The College Dropout, I just don't get why this is popular.

Way too long, pretty dull in general. Lamar's voice varies between whiny and muppetesque. It's certainly unique but not in a way that sounds pleasant to me. Most songs had very little variation within the song so they get stale very quickly

It has its moments. In particular some cool beats here and there. But in general I'm not a fan of his style, especially his smooth low-energy vocal style he uses a lot of the time.

Gah, the first album I get on this whole list is Kendrick Lamar??? Ugh. I feel like I’m kind of broken here because man, do people ever love Kendrick Lamar, but I just can’t seem to. Also, I fully recognize that my main reasons (I don’t like his voice or his flow) are pretty dumb. I guess I sort of get why so many people love this album so much, but for me there are just too many things about it that feel like needles under my skin, sonically. I can’t even focus on the lyrics or the story because I’m so distracted by his voice and various sounds and I haaaaaate feeling like I’m listening to a movie without being able to watch it and the whole thing is just making me feel anxious. I…have issues, right? But I did like “Compton” (probably because it’s Dre heavy). My conclusion here? I don’t like it, but I definitely believe that it’s not Kendrick, it’s me. 2/5

I really tried but Kendrick Lamar just ruins any song he is in. The positives: like most rap music I like the beats and melodies. Some lyrics were pretty good! Hip hop with social commentary on inner city living, the culture, gang hostility, violence, peer pressure, drugs, sex, individual fears and vulnerability. I don't mind gritty realism but I didn't get any pleasure listening to it. But I'm not exactly the target demographic anyway. Also hasn't this concept been explored enough already?

In the words of Andy Townsend - \"not for me Clive\". It sounded like someone with ADHD just saying random sentences as quickly as possible, while his mates messed about with a drum machine and a Casio keyboard. I am a big fan of rap\hip-hop, albeit I am in my 50's so I'm probably much more 'old school' than most, but this album did nothing for me. Maybe I need to give it a few listens to appreciate it, but I needed a tiny spark from the first listen to do that, and I got nothing. It's 2 stars for me.

Pour être honnête, je ne suis pas un gros amateur de rap (j'apprécie énormément certains artistes/albums, mais c'est juste pas une musique qui fait partie de mon quotidien), mais cette écoute était agréable. Quelques titres vraiment sympas, d'autres moins (trop pop?) La dernière fois que j'ai écouté un album de Kendrick j'ai eu le même plaisir global. Il faudrait sans doute que j'écoute davantage !

Not my usual genre of music to listen to. Found it quite hard going at the start but as the album progressed found my self enjoying certain aspects of it. Out of choice would probably not listen to it again though but that’s just cause it’s not for me really.

I did not love this album but I listened to the whole thing and did not have any urges to skip songs or turn it off. There are other artists in this genre that I really enjoy. This was not one of them.

I love some hip hop, this felt a bit too try hard. Nothing special in the lyrics and nothing special in the mixing. I know a few KL tracks and they're "alright" but this whole album felt a bit "meh".

This had some good bits towards the end of the album. But I struggled a little with the lack of hook etc.

There's nothing new or interesting here. The production is nice. Does anyone get anything out of those little conversational skits that appear on 90% of hip hop albums? They really break up the enjoyment of the musical experience for me, they're jarring. I'd be happy to never hear another talky skit again. I found this whole thing quite tedious.

I guess I just can't put myself into the target crowd. I like the slice-of-life focus but have too much trouble hearing the words so I lose the whole point.

I preferred it to the previous KL offering. More musicality but some of it still sets my teeth on edge.

Not for me

The headline here is I really don’t enjoy this guy’s tone. I usually rate hiphop albums on flow, production, content and tone but the other three criteria don’t get much of a look in here coz I just can’t get past his nasal qualities. The production and flow just about drag it up to a two.

As you know, I'm not averse to a bit of rap if done well, and this is. It comes over as a piece of social commentary better than most, and the music is performed very well too. But even with all that it's not something I'd listen too by choice or spend money on. Definite 2

This album goes from a believer’s prayer to disgusting lyrics. I’ll put this in same hypocritical category as Destiny Child. There’s a special place in music hell for this album.

I liked "Backseat Freestyle" best, and "Swimming Pools." The rest definitely lacked the things I like about Kendrick though. More gangster. Also WTF Drake featured on this?

I've heard about half these tracks before and for the most part, I liked this record. But it is really monotonous. None of these tracks really differentiate themselves in a meaningful way. It's also super relative and has a weird prayer toward the end.

This wasn't my genre and didn't convince me it should become it. I knew the name, didn't know the music. Hearing it, nothing pulled me in. Lyrics didn't grab me. Most of the music was fairly basic. Continuing my original perception on the name as famous for reasons I can't explain.

Starts off with a prayer to Jesus then immediately rapping about stripper ass and pussy. And he wishes his dick was as big as the Eiffel Tower. And drugs. And violence. And lots and lots of n-words. This music was not made for me, but it was somewhat entertaining at least. He's got sort of a unique delivery. Dr. Dre's rap sucked. He should have stayed retired.

The beats are cool, but the lyrics are cringe and all the skits throughout even cringier. I did not enjoy this listening experience.

Well. TPAB is better. I dunno this is one of those concept albums where I don’t really care about the concept that much. I think the biggest flaw is there’s really no FUN songs on here. There’s nothing I’d put on to feel good or to dance. The song that comes closest is, ironically, the song that’s intentionally bad and juvenile. So many songs feel too long, the whole album drags out, why the fuck is there a 10 minute long song on this, it’s exhausting considering the beat never changes and nothing interesting happens with the flow for 6 minutes. It’s just an exhausting album all around in terms of subject matter and musicality. Beyond that I really don’t love the holier than thou posturing of Kendrick?

I can understand that, if you are into Hip Hop and rap, this album might be pleasing to you. What I am trying to understand is why I should find it pleasing to listen to? Though, to be fare, if the choice would be between listening to this or EDM, then give me this any day...

I know he's popular among my generation and many of my friends consider him the greatest of all time — I still think he's full of shit.

I gave this a fair try to hear why Kendrick is considered one of the best rappers, I guess I don't listen to enough rap to understand the nuances of what makes him great. Interesting to listen to, but probably not something I'd revisit.

I can see why people like him, but definitely not my jam.

Rap/hip-hop generally isn't my cuppa at all. I've listened to Kendrick before (not this album) and he's an artist from that genre I actually enjoy, and this album is no exception. That said, I won't spin it many more times going forward.

I haven't listened to this album really since it came out, I was a teenager. It doesn't hit the same now, it's not really my thing. Certainly there's some decent tunes but the whole album is too much for me, some of the songs are far too long and I am not hearing good reason for them to keep going so long. The opener has some pretty misogynistic lyrics as well so I'm put off from the get go. Favourite tracks: Good Kid, Sing About Me I'm Dying Of Thirst

I really did not enjoy the first 4 or 5 tracks. The second half of the album was a lot better, enough that I kind of forgot about the start. Unfortunately once I got to the end of the album it started again and brought that bad taste right back. Not for me.

Just not my cup of tea unfortunately, the day before this I had Stankonia by Outkast and I vastly preferred that record. This one felt like such a slog to get through. But "Money Trees" and "Real" are decent enough tracks so it wasn't a complete waste of time.

Modern hip hop. Not terrible, I just don't like the modern stuff as much as the old school hip hop, and Kendrick is a big fan of putting dumb fuckin skits in the middle of songs. I listened to this album a few years ago to see all the KL hype. I didn't really like it then and still not so much this go around. I give credit to the lyrics and the story telling but I just can't vibe with the style. KL sounds like a froggy alien and he runs on with his flow too much. A few songs are goos and i give it a little bump on the rating for stepping out of the norm.

It's a fine listen coming from a non-rap fan. I'm aware of Kendrick Lamar as he is probably the most popular rapper currently. It is evident that Kendrick Lamar is skilled and why he has been creating hits over the past few years. I imagine a rap fan can tell you a lot more about the depth, style and linguistic skill on display on this album. For me it was a fun listen with a couple songs that stood out. I can respect the skill and art. 2.30 stars

Ah west coast rap, again. Not being an officianado I have no idea how different this is from the norm. I quite liked the production and general more tuneful yet darker tunes and beats, seemed a bit different. But then all the gangsta, guns etc lyrics and it just loses me.

This is better than the last Kendrick album I got, but not my genre still.

Sherane - 5/10 A decent song but probably didn't listen as hard as I should've, interesting though. -- Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe - 3/10 A really boring, really commercial song with a boring beat and awful vocal effects. -- Backseat Freestyle - 4/10 Lyrics seemed pretty awful, song was generally boring but with a somewhat interesting second half -- Peer Pressure - 6.5/10 Nice intro instrumental however vocals in that segment were AIDS however after the beat switched up the vocals and bars did improve. -- Money Trees - 7.5/10 Best song so far easily, great flow, great beat, decent feature and the vocal part at the end doesn't drag on as much as other tracks. -- Poetic Justice - 3/10 "this song has no right being over 2 minutes" in other words, extremely bland song. -- good kid - 6/10 Pretty decent listen however should have ended earlier -- m.A.A.d city - 8.5/10 Great song, great sounds, great switch-up, great feature, great. "If he can do this why can't he do it again" -- End of listening!!!!!!!!!!!!!! --Album review-- Very bland album with some golden moments, the non-musical parts are completely overused and the flow as well as beats are also usually quite poor with good performances in some songs. 5.5/10

Man, talk about overrated. I’ve heard nothing but raves for this for the past 10+ years, and this is it? You don’t need to put a voicemail skit into every single song, dude. You’d think in a genre defined so much by rhythm, that the rapping would actually be on beat, but I guess not.

There are some nice rhythms and vibes on here, but that's not enough for me. Mostly, I was bored.

This was probably one of the better rap albums I’ve listened to recently, but I still have the same problem I normally do which is just that the lyrics simply don’t resonate with me - that being said I did still find them interesting and compelling enough for me to find some enjoyment in the album.

disliked kendrick before this album because i was iffy about his flow, but this album was interesting. cool how he sings about rosecrans and compton a lot. didn't like a lot of the phone calls and interruptions in the music though. some cool tracks on here.

I don't know that I'd listen to this again, or more like it. I tried.

My african american really loves them phone calls in his songs. Musically I only liked the first part of m.A.A.d city. Had to read the lyrics, would get insanely bored otherwise. As for the lyrics, I found them very caricaturistic and hard to sympathize with, likely because of the cultural gap. The only exception was The Art of Peer Pressure, it's a bit more universal, I reckon

I was excited to listen to this because I never had and I knew KL was a big deal. However, I'm not impressed. The beats are lame, the lyrics seems scattered and disconnected. Not for me.

De enige artiest in de 1001 die inspiratie van de Mighty Dub Katz vandaan haalt. (Mag ik hopen). Lamar houdt vooral van schelden. Mag hoor. Hij lijkt er populair mee te worden. Maar heel vernieuwend is het allemaal niet. Muzikaal klinkt het heel gemaakt. Tot we het halverwege (veel te laat) plotseling meer volwassen gaat klinken. Poëtisch naar zijn zeggen. Poëtisch is een ruim begrip. Maar het lijkt mij zelfoverschatting. Of is het compensatiegedrag? Wellicht is compensatiedrang het thema ? En bestaat dit album alleen maar om zichzelf groter voor te doen dan hij zichzelf voelt?

Klaarblijkelijk gaat dit album over het opgroeien en volwassen worden van Kendrick Lamar. Vandaar dat er in het begin ook een kinderachtig gangstarap-nummer op staat als "Backseat Freestyle". Maar daarna ontwikkelt het zichzelf wel iets inderdaad. Als je hiermee opgroeit, of je hebt het heel vaak gehoord en geluisterd naar de teksten, dan kan ik me voorstellen dat het misschien iconisch voor je is. Ik heb alleen geen tijd en zin om dit 5 of 10x te luisteren. Voor mij is het niet heel veel anders dan de meeste 13 in een dozijn rap, al klinken de beats wel lekker en zit er een fijne flow in. Maar het blijft te vaak een monotone emotieloze rap op een monotoon achtergrondgeluidje. En waarom die albums altijd zo lang moeten zijn, is me ook een raadsel. Al is "Compton" wel een van de betere nummers van het album.

This album isn't really for me, and I didn't finish it. I know how impactful Kendrick Lamar has been in the rap world so it was interesting to hear songs that have definitely been sampled or inspired other songs, but it's just my vibe.

I guess it's a seminal album, but it wasn't my cup of tea :(

Kendrick Lamar often seems to be cited as the big hip hop phenomenon after 2010. I've tried getting into his stuff, but I just don't see it. I tried listening extra much to the lyrics this time to see if that's where the gold was, but to me it's just the same old tropey disrespecting women, talk about fame and money etc. that you've heard a trillion times. And sure, some of the beats were perhaps a bit more... mellow and melodic somehow, but not enough to warrant that level of recognition. The trap-like elements and tri-hit hi-hats actually works against me here, not a fan of that at all. I think my favourite song of the album was 'Sing about me, I'm dying of thirst', which coincidentally also seem to stand out the most from the rest. I really want to like it, but I just don't. And I am pretty sure this is an extremely unpopular opinion. Maybe he was super revolutionary when he came out, but if so, it's just not in a direction I enjoy. Weak 2 for me.

Often stated as some rap breakthrough album. Production is really nice. Lyrics are are still half arsed and offensive. Disappointing.

I find this the same that I find Taylor swift in that I can appreciate the artistry and I know so many people love it. But I just don’t enjoy it. Nearly 900 songs into this journey, the one thing I will say that has changed about me is that I no longer hate rap and hip hop with quite the passion that I once did. I still can’t say I enjoy those genres, but I don't mind listening to them nearly as much as I once did. In the last week I've had LL Cool J, Ice Cube, and now Kendrick Lamar. This was okay, again not something I would probably listen to again but I didn't hate it either. 2 stars.

I'm just a casual hip hop listener, but so far Kendrick Lamar hasn't been high on my list, and probably it will stay like this forever. I understand why he is so highly regarded by American popculture, but unfortunately it has no appeal for me at all. I'm not particularly fond of his style, I find his flow hard to follow, which makes it hard to focus on the lyrics as well, which are most likely not really aimed at an audience like myself anyway. Still, I think this album is better than the previous one I've listened to from this list - To Pimp a Butterfly. Slightly better rating, but not much improvement.

Trying hard to like this because it's an hour and 20 minutes long and he's respected like. I'm not doing very well. The 2 singles down are comfortably the worst of the 4 songs so far. Why does he keep rapping while holding his nose? Art of Peer Pressure was the first song I thought was OK. Money Trees was good too. Actually, that was genuinely good, I enjoyed that one. If we can avoid more garbage I could get into this. Good Kid is good so far, yeah, really good. That’s 2 songs enjoyed. Maad City – ok I think I’ve actually heard this. Not for me at all but I guess it’s good. Oh ok its two songs in one without giving the second part a title. Weird move but OK. I like this bit lots better. Swimming Pool I think is the first single I haven’t thought is utter shit. Just seen the last 2 tracks are remixes of one of the shit songs so I’m getting out of school early, this is good. Emeli Sande, what happened to her? Oh you fucker, a 12 minute song. Except ok, its really good and affecting. Not sure I need the full minute of prayer at the end to get the effect. A 7 minute song now, this guy is pissing me off. So it’s not for me obviously, there are some good songs here no doubt and I’m glad I listened, but it’s too long and plenty of stuff I just don’t like at all.

Some nice grooves and real smooth rapping here, but the content was a bit much for me at times. Totally get we're decades into the shock-language era, whether it's AM radio hosts, artists in all media, public discourse, etc., so it's not like the language and content were too much for my ears on a sensitivity level; it's really a matter a personal preference.

I thought it was OK. Quite chilled and easy-listening. I believe its a concept album which I didn't pick up with just casual listen - maybe if I followed the story it'd be a three.

Je ne suis pas vraiment apte à bien évaluer cet album. Je dirais qu’en tant que blanc d’une petite banlieu ben tranquille, il y a toute une réalité qui est racontée sur ce disque qui m’échappe complètement. Je pese que c’est beaucoup dans ce récit que l’intérêt principal se trouve. Pour ce qui est de la musique, il y a quelques belles choses. Je ne crois pas qu’il essaie de repousser quelque limite que ce soit, ou même d’introduire de nouvelles sonoritées, ce qui aurait été pertinent pour mon point de vue à moi.

There's some R&B artists, songs, and albums out there that I absolutely love and adore. This album is not among them. In fact, this was a prime example of what, in my opinion, tends to give the genre a bad rap overall. Objectifying women and fantasizing about being violent towards them, unserious lyrics with strong language just for the show of it, just to be explicit, egotistical lyrics that glorify superficial ambitions like egregious wealth, expensive bullshit, and having the most bitches, are among the most stereotypical subjects of this genre, and this album showcases all of that shit. There's so much more to rap, but albums like this make it hard to find.

The new Rolling Stones album “Foreign Tongues” was released yesterday so I have been able to listen to that today for the umpteenth time already. If I make it to be an octogenarian with half as much energy and enthusiasm for this sort of music as Jagger, I will be SO grateful. This is another great album (4 stars) although not sure if it’s quite as good as Hackney Diamonds which was almost 3 years ago now. Some of the tracks were ones which didn’t make it onto that release but good to hear them now. Too long to wait for another album anyway but oh so worth it. Not sure about the cover of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” however. It was included as their tribute to her and although a good song I think I prefer the original. They could also lose Keith Richard’s lead vocals on “Some of Us” though his singing with Mick on “Covered in You” (with McCartney also guesting on bass) is a good one… Oh sorry, were you expecting a review of another Kendrick Lamar album? Seriously!?

I have heard of Kendrick Lamar, but I cannot say that I know his music. Lamar's second studio album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City was released in 2012. Why does every rapper have the same bio on Wikipedia? They are all considered the best rapper. Is that like a participation award? I did like the use of a Janet Jackson song on"Poetic Justice", but it makes sense. The rest of the album had good music, but that was it. Overall, I hated it because of the language. It is vulgar, but that seems typical for rap and hip hop. Is it ironic when they talk about Jesus and curse so much? I had oringally gave it a 5/10, but years later(2026) I lowered the score. 3/10.

Terrible, worst album I've ever heard

See previous review. After listening to this, it’s the same response, but much more so. Repetitive and lyrically revolting too.

I wanted to like this. After reading how highly, and universally, this has been praised, I thought "oh good, maybe this will be the album that gets me to appreciate contemporary hip hop even more." It just didn't happen. It's not a pleasurable listening experience to me. I did think it was funny how in the first song he was bragging about how he's gonna get with the hot girl and then his mom and dad call him nagging him about something and killing the whole buzz. I chuckled a bit about that, and appreciated his sense of humor. It's clear this resonates deeply with lots of people - I'm just not one of them. I do like some old school rap such as Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, NWA, Public Enemy - but it seems this genre has moved in a completely different direction from those, that it's just not relatable to me at all. I'd probably need to go back and listen to the progression of hip hop for the last 40 years to make it click for me. I just don't have any desire to listen to any of this again.
