Its ok, but a bit Goddy

It was ik. Like kendricks voice but a but to profane

Didn't think I'd like it after the first couple of songs, but from 'The Art of Peer Pressure' it really kicks it. High 3, not quite a 4.

What an iconic album. While it may not be as masterful as To Pimp a Butterfly, the story Kendrick tells here is nearly as compelling. Even looking past that, the music and production here are just as good on a surface level. I guess it's not every cup of tea, but Swimming Pools (Drank) and Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst are songs that have kept and will keep me coming back to this album for years. Highlight: Swimming Pools (Drank) Lowlight: good kid Surprise Hit: Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst

There were good moments but overall not my favourite. I would listen again but I won't seek it out. A bit off-balanced maybe? More listens might help.

A powerful album about being both nostalgic for and proud to have risen above the violent place you were raised, while also being immediately obvious just how much the songs on this album influenced rap for the next decade

I didn't really like the start of this album but the more I listened to it, the more I enjoyed it. Took some time but after getting to the end I wanted to listen again. There are a couple of songs that are really not enjoyable for me and I really couldn't ever see myself casually listening to, but overall I liked it by the end.

Listened to this one plenty of times, my favourite Kendrick album and I think his best. Make sure M.a.a.d city is played on a subwoofer, the 808s are impossible to hear on normal speakers It's well written, even though he uses a lot of voice manipulation it doesn't feel too goofy, the beats are sick, the stories are honest; all in all a fantastic album. The features a great too, maybe not as much Mary Blige on now or never, but the rest are great. GOATed album

Quality throughout, no weak links. Big range of style/feel between tracks, all the way from classic street focussed to more introspective. Personal favourite would be 'Sing about me, I'm dying of thirst'.

My african american really loves them phone calls in his songs. Musically I only liked the first part of m.A.A.d city. Had to read the lyrics, would get insanely bored otherwise. As for the lyrics, I found them very caricaturistic and hard to sympathize with, likely because of the cultural gap. The only exception was The Art of Peer Pressure, it's a bit more universal, I reckon

if I could remove like 4 songs and remove all the interlude / storytelling parts then this album couldve been a 5 but some songs are just so mid (like Backseet Freestyle) and all the interlude shit

Kendrick’s age shows on this one. There’s some bangers for sure but it’s mostly just your typical gangster rap themes - robberies, drive bys, getting drinks etc.

HL: "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe", "Money Trees", "Poetic Justice", "m.A.A.d city", "Swimming Pools", "I'm Dying of Thirst" not 1st listen, which is good. I definitely misunderstood it the first listen (in 2022), since Kendrick's detachment as the narrator meant I didn't realize how autobiographical GKMC really is. I always did appreciate the cinematic structure though, and the build-up to the title tracks (especially "m.A.A.d city") is as chilling as ever. Both this and TPAB have a song that sounded awful to me the first listen, but they have only continued to rise in stature. Those would be "For Free?" and "Backseat Freestyle" On that note, GKMC is a 5 star that probably wouldn’t have been, had I been introduced to it today November 6th, 2023

Lyrical flow incredible

Lamar took home a Pulitzer for DAMN, but i still contend this is his best album. The narrative arc, the storytelling, and the character development would make this a masterpiece if you just took the lyrical work by kendrick, but add in the production work (headed up by Dre) providing a setting that is instantly recognizable, and this album feels like a three act play. The teenage "goddamn i got bitches" bravado weaves through greed, addiction, vengeance and death, before folding to the albums culminating wisdom, none of that shit made me real. "real is responsibility. real is taking care of your family, real is god."

I don’t know why, but I just can’t get into it. Too much noise/talking/skits in between the actual music.

look, I’ve never been the biggest fan here, at least compared to everyone else my age. the impact of this record on millenials is undeniable, but at this point it all feels very played out. I think if I could listen with fresh ears I would score it higher, but sadly I cannot

An all time great rap album. Kendrick really liked to experiment with his sound and had several styles that he used to perfection. He is not just a rap bot but bring a message with a variety of styles. A few week songs but overall a solid album.

Top tier rap album. Kendrick is awesome

Kendrick’s lyricism and story telling serve as a glimpse behind the curtain of a way of life that’s incredibly far removed from my own; a lifestyle that I’ve always respected, but rarely understood. This album feels like I’m being taken for a ride-along through the neighborhoods that shaped Kendrick’s adolescence; able to point to individual street corners, refer to characters I’ve never met by first name, and still see of the nuance and impact that each experience had. As often as Kendrick is able to reminisce about bonding memories with friends, you get a sense of his resentment and eagerness to leave those people behind. His stories aren’t told from a place of pride, but as a matter of fact retelling of a difficult existence. There’s an overarching tone of criticism in living an unsustainable life in a balancing act; caught between earning masculine respect through acts of violence, and grieving for the friends and family lost along the way.

Another Kendrick Lamar masterpiece. While I don’t believe this record is as good as TPAB, it is very close. GKMC is an album with masterful storytelling and a lot of replayability.

I'm not deep into hip-hop, but DAMN. Pun intended. Smart, brash, bold, and a complete album. I've spent more time with To Pimp a Butterfly and DAMN, but this one is so good.

Pretty much as good as storytelling rap can possibly get

yeah this was pretty great. his flow is pretty unmatched and you can tell the amount of effort he puts into his craft, it really pays off. the production on this album was also great. dr. dre has still got it. overall, a very enjoyable listen. i can see why this album is so highly regarded.

I think what's more interesting than the story that this album tells is the story that is told in the reviews for this album. After I finished listening to this again, I went through and had a look at the reviews that other people had written. You all are telling on yourselves! I think it's really interesting that every single one of the reviews that is one star for this have the stodgiest old white man music up as their top 10, five favorite best artist, etc. I don't like the fucking doors but I'm still going to listen to it and appreciate it in the context that it's given to me in. Everyone who got on high horses saying, 'how can you listen to 'my dick get big as the Eiffel Tower' and be like that's a good lyric". What? It's a fantastic lyric. of course it's braggadocio. Course it's offensive. It's supposed to be from the perspective of a juvenile person who doesn't know how to act and has learned how to live from an ill-conceived popular notion that is negatively impacting their life. That's the point of this album. And it absolutely slaps while it's having that conversation. Everyone who gave this one star missed the point Thanks for coming to my ted talk. P.S. this is one of the best albums of the 2010s

I really enjoyed a few songs on the album. It’s a great album to play while driving. I think I need to listen to this album a few more times to get it.

Sherane was wel grappig, deed me een beetje denken aan de space song van napstablook. Alleen jammer dat er iemand overheen zong Bitch, don’t kill my vibe was niet echt mijn ding Backseat Freestyle vond ik gewoon stom. Die zou ik actief uitzetten. Als iemand dit te hard luisterde in de trein zou ik ergens anders gaan zitten. The Art of Peer Pressure was in het begin lekker RnB achtig maar toen werd het weer rap, niet mijn ding. Money Trees is veel beluisterd, ik ben benieuwd. Ik denk dat ik dit eerder heb gehoord maar dan een soort remix op instagram of zo. Deze is op zich wel grappig. Poetic Justice en good kid stonden me niet zo aan m.A.A.d city vind ik ook niks maar heb ik wel eerder gehoord. In ieder geval het begin, de rest niet. Listened to this on a drunk Friday night after a teambuilding event and light argument with Peter. It's ok I like Kanye better. Kendrick is definitely better at rapping. Bitch don't kill my vibe is nice and so is money trees. This is definitely very high quality music but not really for me rn. I stopped at mad city/swimming pool I'm not really into this, lowering my initial rating from. Ugh nevermind I'm pretty conflicted. Sing about me is really nice. This seems like an album that might grow on me. Oof the part where he gets shot while singing I felt that. Ok I'm done at real. Compton is good too tho

I was excited to listen to this because I never had and I knew KL was a big deal. However, I'm not impressed. The beats are lame, the lyrics seems scattered and disconnected. Not for me.

Really great album especially the latter half-it gets even more personal talking about alcoholism, peer pressure, and the death of loved ones.

It's a good album. I don't think Kendrick Lamar can disappoint me ever.

Amazing, classic, dynamic.

This wasn't my favorite, but there were parts I really liked.

I was waiting for that one track that would just blow me away. That never came, but the ride otherwise was enjoyable. A more relaxed vibe than I was expecting. A couple of tracks rang familiar and overall I thought it was a very good album.

Musically and lyrically dense, there are a lot of layers to unpack in this album. It's got a variety of voices and perspectives and some catchy hooks. I'm well-taken with it.

I started off pessimistic about this… and as I started listening I started dreading the hour+ runtime. But as this went on I found myself liking this more and more. Nice variety of music, I liked the laid back tracks. Really good.

Music is super interesting, solid 5 stars for all the noises mixed into the music, but can't deal with ANY misogynistic lyrics which in almost any other case lead to NO STARS from me, so guess what: You get a three.

Derivative trash.

I'm not a big fan of most hip hop from this century. I cut my teeth on 90s hip hop, but my tastes just went elsewhere as I've gotten older. This album I really enjoyed and will listen to again. I found the beats to be very old school feeling and never once overpowered the flow like in a lot of modern hip hop I've heard. I also found the rhymes to be insanely poetic, which is something that will pull me into any genre of music.

Absolutely classic

CERTIFIED BANGER

This is definitely in my top 5 most played albums ever. I went through a period after its release where I was listening to it on a cycle for every drive / walk to class. I don't think I've ever tired of it. This album is the second "mature" release from Kendrick, following up lesser known Section 80. This album picks up where its predecessor left off with more wide-eyed and reflective tales of the struggles and impediments that plague poor black communities; however, rather than approach obliquely, this album puts us on ground level with a conceptual narrative through the eyes of Kendrick himself as a young teen. Throughout the runtime, Kendrick puts a raw lens on seduction, peer pressure, religion, gang violence, and more. All of these he explores effectively and with music that ranges from boom-bap (Backseat Freestyle, m.A.A.d city), to soul (Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe) and beyond. I can't give enough praise for this album. Concept is well executed and tied together start to finish. I love every song on here and think the sequencing is fantastic. Only odd-point is Compton, but it fits with the overall story arc he is trying to convey. This is his glittering "I made it" anthem. I did find it highly ironic, however, that Swimming Pools (a song about the pervading toxic mindset of drowning oneself in alcohol) became a party anthem after this came out in 2012. Oh well... 5 / 5

The production on this album is insane. I really enjoy the overall story being portrayed as well about a kid growing up in the streets and how he is influenced by different members of the same community. There's obviously some hits that I recognize to varying degrees, but Compton may have been my favorite song and a great one to go out on. I'm glad I focused while listening to this one, because I got a lot out of all of the lyrics and features. Overall I enjoyed this about as much as I expected. I want to reiterate how much I enjoyed the production/mixing in my headphones. This is an album that likely gets better with more listens as you get to unpack the lyrics more and more. After one listen, this one is a strong 4.

Kendricks flow is so perfect and the lyrics are on point. Might be one of the best songwriters in rap. Bitch don't kill my vibe is such a jam and really sets the tone of the album as the second song. Money Trees has such a hard beat and the chorus is so catchy. That whole album is so hardcore. The random gunshots put me on edge.

Some classic raps albums these past couple weeks! I'm not gonna write a song by song review cuz I blasted this in the car today and had already heard it dozens and dozens of times. Pretty much every song on this album is a banger. Love the transitions from song to song with skits at the end. Money Trees is one of my favorite hype songs. GANG SIGNS OUT THE WINDOW YA BISH. HOPING ALL OF EM OFFEND YOU YA BISH. What a fuckin G. Another one of my favorites that's not even technically on the album (but was the first single?) is The Recipe. Women Weed n Weather. Kung Fu Kenny's breakout will go down as a classic for years to come. Bring on TPAB next.

My favourite Kendrick album by FAR. Like the Deluxe version the most

One of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. A gangster concept album that doesn’t glorify but condemns such a lifestyle. Kendrick is a master of observation and his powerful and poignant lyrics reflect this, it’s an incredible commentary on the Afro-American experience with themes ranging from drug abuse, alcoholism, sex, gang violence, toxic masculinity and police brutality.

Bij albums in dit genre is het bij kennelijk: ofwel ik vind het best leuk, ofwel ik vind het helemaal niks. Deze zit in het midden, muzikaal is het nog wel aardig. Maar dan zit er toch weer een stukje vuilspuiterij in en dan zijn ze ineens weer 'af'. Een minimum aan goede smaak blijft toch een vereiste, vrees ik...

De enige artiest in de 1001 die inspiratie van de Mighty Dub Katz vandaan haalt. (Mag ik hopen). Lamar houdt vooral van schelden. Mag hoor. Hij lijkt er populair mee te worden. Maar heel vernieuwend is het allemaal niet. Muzikaal klinkt het heel gemaakt. Tot we het halverwege (veel te laat) plotseling meer volwassen gaat klinken. Poëtisch naar zijn zeggen. Poëtisch is een ruim begrip. Maar het lijkt mij zelfoverschatting. Of is het compensatiegedrag? Wellicht is compensatiedrang het thema ? En bestaat dit album alleen maar om zichzelf groter voor te doen dan hij zichzelf voelt?

Klaarblijkelijk gaat dit album over het opgroeien en volwassen worden van Kendrick Lamar. Vandaar dat er in het begin ook een kinderachtig gangstarap-nummer op staat als "Backseat Freestyle". Maar daarna ontwikkelt het zichzelf wel iets inderdaad. Als je hiermee opgroeit, of je hebt het heel vaak gehoord en geluisterd naar de teksten, dan kan ik me voorstellen dat het misschien iconisch voor je is. Ik heb alleen geen tijd en zin om dit 5 of 10x te luisteren. Voor mij is het niet heel veel anders dan de meeste 13 in een dozijn rap, al klinken de beats wel lekker en zit er een fijne flow in. Maar het blijft te vaak een monotone emotieloze rap op een monotoon achtergrondgeluidje. En waarom die albums altijd zo lang moeten zijn, is me ook een raadsel. Al is "Compton" wel een van de betere nummers van het album.

Very goooood

His rapping is very good, fast rhymes while also enunciating the words so you can actually understand what he's saying takes skill. The beats are good, great production that you would expect from Dr. Dre. Guest appearances from JayZ and Pharrell also added to the albums. Lyrically, I'm not a fan of his objectifaction of women and descriptions of violence against them, but this album was a retrospective of his early life, talking about what he saw, and was taught. In that aspect it's an interesting piece of work, overall a decent album

In his breakthrough album, Kendrick sets a new standard for 2010s hip-hop. He takes conventional pop rap sounds and basic samples, and essentially shows everyone how it's truly done. It's simple yet catchy, full of highly memorable hits. Even though one could argue there are a couple weak songs on here, you could not argue any of them are by any means forgettable. The greatest strength of this record is its coherency and focus. It offers a lot of diversity and creative techniques like sudden bridges, and yet it still emphasizes Kendrick's skilled flow and lyricism, telling emotional personal stories about his youth and the corrupt, scary world he grew up in. The track ordering is almost perfect, but "Poetic Justice" is in a weird spot with its chill, optimistic sound between two really depressing ones, and the ending felt a bit dissatisfying; probably could've changed "Sing About Me I'm Dying of Thirst" to be a more fitting closer. Due to its accessibility, replayability and the countless hits, ingenuity, creative production, coherency in sound and story, and fantastic flow and lyrics, I give it full points. It's not as mind-blowing as To Pimp a Butterfly, but it does what it does nearly perfectly, and serves as a great introduction to get people into hip hop.

Very good rap album. Listening to it in 2023 after listening to all the newer Kendrick albums feels like listening to the father of modern, complex, kind of experimental conscious rap.

Another long hip hop album. Reminded me of outkast a bit. I am aware Ken is stratospherically popular amongst the young’ns but I tried not to let that cloud my judgement. I thought the horny and misogynistic lyrics showed hip hop probably hasn’t moved on much in 30 years, however it felt a bit deeper than some of the other newer shit I’ve heard and I found myself enjoying it. It did feel like a special album with some interesting sounds. Worthy of a 5/5 probably.

I don’t know if it’s controversial to say but while To Pimp A Butterfly is KDot’s quality wise best, this is my personal favorite of his. A GREAT bridge between Section .80 Kendrick and what we now have as Kendrick. I could listen to this album everyday and not get tired of it.

This album isn't really for me, and I didn't finish it. I know how impactful Kendrick Lamar has been in the rap world so it was interesting to hear songs that have definitely been sampled or inspired other songs, but it's just my vibe.

Really good – rich and layered, massively creative and highly dynamic. Moody and super personal. One doesn't follow the logic every cut, but it's a very cool ride.

This was the first Kendrick album I heard, and I immediately loved it. Probably not as good as TPAB, but i have listened to this one more. I haven't paid much attention to rap as an adult, but this is great.

Pretty good. Kendrick is a capable rapper, and the overall mood is decent. A few standouts, like Swimming Pools, cross the threshold into being unique. The main issue is that the production is largely pretty boilerplate. Whatever is borrowed from g-funk and dirty south is borrowed wholesale, unchanged. It's standard fare, with above average lyrical delivery. But Kendrick's flow can't elevate it enough to make it noteworthy. I know this album was hyped up and acclaimed to the moon. I assume that's for the storytelling, which I don't care about. I didn't grow up in Compton. I can't identify with that. I don't care about how he was materialistic and then grew into being a more thoughtful and spiritual person. I want an album of music, not a biography.

Well produced, surprisingly soathing sometimes, but not very disrupting, lacks overall punch. Includes some outstanding tracks tho, later albums are even better.

It certainly deserves the advisory sticker. This is not a good album for karaoke.

Though i don't love Kendrick's style and delivery, this album is a testament to his vision and creativity. The lyrical richness definitely paints a Compton experience that is pretty impressive. The album hits it stride with Good Kid, MAAD City and Drank. A compelling album.

One of my favorite artists of all time. His 3rd best record so it would be unfair to give this a 5-star. This album is beautiful story of Compton and his past life.

The lyrics are questionable, of course, but there’s no getting away from the fact that this album overall has a chill vibe and I like his voice. And Swimming Pools is a cracker. Much better than the ‘seminal’ The Chronic by Dr Dre. I have to give this a 4. Glad I listened

Kendrick Lamar often seems to be cited as the big hip hop phenomenon after 2010. I've tried getting into his stuff, but I just don't see it. I tried listening extra much to the lyrics this time to see if that's where the gold was, but to me it's just the same old tropey disrespecting women, talk about fame and money etc. that you've heard a trillion times. And sure, some of the beats were perhaps a bit more... mellow and melodic somehow, but not enough to warrant that level of recognition. The trap-like elements and tri-hit hi-hats actually works against me here, not a fan of that at all. I think my favourite song of the album was 'Sing about me, I'm dying of thirst', which coincidentally also seem to stand out the most from the rest. I really want to like it, but I just don't. And I am pretty sure this is an extremely unpopular opinion. Maybe he was super revolutionary when he came out, but if so, it's just not in a direction I enjoy. Weak 2 for me.

One of my biggest concert regrets is not going to see Kendrick Lamar at a small show in Sweden just when good kid, m.A.A.d city was released. Ah well, live and learn. Anyway, this album is surprisingly dark ("The Art of Peer Pressure" and "Sing About me, I'm dying of thirst" to name a few. I've listened to most of it at different times but never from start to finish. I'm impressed by the heavy topic while still never feeling preachy or pretentious. The lyrics are really the main draw with Kendrick's vivid storytelling about life growing up in Compton. Interspersed between the stories are the "hits" which still deliver a punch. Doing both a heavy topical album as well as containing multiple hit singles is impressive. Sure, the skits are ok the first listen but get old quite fast, it is also a bit too long and there are a few dud tracks. I still think it deserves a 5 though just for being such an experience. I've been listening to this all weekend which is a good indication in it self.

Thus was an interesting listen. It wasn't something I would listen to again as it's not my type of music, but I appreciated the story the album was telling.

It's an ambitious album. It would quickly establish Kendrick as the rapper to emulate, turning him into one of the most important figures in the game. I think it slips up occasionally, and I think it's been surpassed, but I think it's still an incredible album that, for its few faults, is almost all positives. Favorite tracks: "Money Trees", "m.A.A.d. City", "Backseat Freestyle", "Swimming Pools" Also, unrelated, but shoutout to the guy using 1001 who said this is "vile and disgusting" yet gave "The Marshall Mathers LP" by Eminem a 5. Like dude, what?

I really don’t like rap or hip hop, and this album hasn’t changed my mind. Completely accept that this Is probably the pinnacle of the genre but for me it is largely unlistenable

I find this the same that I find Taylor swift in that I can appreciate the artistry and I know so many people love it. But I just don’t enjoy it. I didn’t mind the sound of bitch don’t kill my vibe and poetic justice, and sing about me I’m dying of thirst. Ok ok so a few of them snuck up on me. If To Pimp a Butterfly is Kendrick’s Dark Side of the Moon then this is his Obscured by Clouds. Lots of themes and styles here that would be improved upon resulting in TPaB. Was initially disappointed by all the talking/skits early on but thankful they are few and far between.

Obviously, some spectacular storytelling is going on here. I respect him and I understand why this album in particular was studied in a scholarly aspect as to what life is like for all of those who grew up in Kendrick's situation. Honestly, it's giving a bit of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Unfortunately, unlike most people my age, I was not immersed in this album growing up (save for the few sound bytes and songs that were put in the sports video games) and it holds no specific place in my heart. Therefore, from a purely listener standpoint, I'm pretty neutral about the album and don't want to overinflate the rating due to cultural impact. Sorry, but these ratings show what I like to listen to, not what everyone else likes.

I thought they were so cool, and unlike any other rap songs I'd heard. I had no idea who Kendrick Lamar really was at that point. Coming back to it, I thought I'd give a 3, but after many listens I'm happy to say I had some good taste as a 13-year-old. Now Or Never is one of my favorite Kendrick tracks, but it's on one of the ridiculous amount of Deluxe Versions so I couldn't include it on this rating. Another great Bonus Track is The Recipe. I also like Collect Calls a lot. I unknowingly listened to the Deluxe Version (18 Tracks) growing up and so the Bonus Tracks are some of my favorites. Also, I associate the Deluxe album cover with the album.

Kendrick’s over here just throwing out Shakespearean level bars. GKMC kicks off a pretty unbeatable three-album run that’s just in its own league. What I appreciate a lot about Lamar’s writing is his ability to tell an intricate story across the whole album. You’re drawn in on every verse just based on the story alone, but also in appreciation for the wordsmithing.

Really good record. Kendrick takes you on a journey through the life of an inner city kid, and how the street life eventually consumes individuals who live there. Very thought provoking and emotional. To those who say it’s vulgar, be happy you don’t understand or relate to the lyrics.

The fact that he is able to combine massive anthems with an extremely raw and impactful story is amazing. The lyricism is second to none, and this is one of many projects that makes us appreciate Kendrick Lamar and give him his flowers while we have a chance. Score Breakdown: 4.683 & 5 -> 4.842

Listening to this record now made me realize how popular almost every single song got back when it was released. While I enjoy TPAB much more than this album due to the jazz instrumentation and less electronic distortion on both vocals and beats, I have to respect the flow of this record and the star-studded cast doing their thing. A great entry from Mr Lamar. This album is tragic, personal and heartbreaking, but also extremely hype. I remember some of these songs being played at every party/festival I attended in the 2010s, an interesting juxtaposition to hear them in this context. That is the beauty of a great songwriter though, the songs can reach a wide audience, yet contain multitudes. Excellent album. Tried listening to "To pimp a butterfly" on my own before and found it a bit too chaotic for my liking. However, this record has a better balance of experimentation and accessibility. I still have to listen to it again to get a fuller picture, but even the first listening experience was extremely enjoyable. One of the best hip-hop records I've heard so far.

Playful and poignant, but not as good, overall, as Butterfly. One finds the narratives blurbs a little overdone, but quite likes most of the beats and flows. A skilled and distinctive MC.

Near Perfect in every aspect. Amazing storytelling through its runtime while every track sounds stands in its own, in the background or while picking apart at it in detail. 9/10

I know my standards are pretty soft when it comes to lyrically-driven/story-centered music--I understand that some say this work is not as sonically impressive as Kendrick's future work--but what's here is magnificent. Shoutout to Money Trees, Swimming Pools (Drank), and the absolute masterpiece that is Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst.

Obscene, not my vibe, I suppose I respect the legend and his hardship. This is art for its potency and relevance to the inner city American. But man, this ain't pretty.

Good singles, but not for me

Very engaging concept album about growing up and trying to get out of a rough place. The lyrics, music and production combine to tell a powerful and honest story.

Banger. I was actually late on KDot. Only started seriously listening once DAMN dropped. Not a whole lot of filler on here. A lot of the production doesn’t stand the test of time for me, but there’s def a handful of classics on here.

K dot. This was the first album I heard of his. Great album.

Nearly 900 songs into this journey, the one thing I will say that has changed about me is that I no longer hate rap and hip hop with quite the passion that I once did. I still can’t say I enjoy those genres, but I don't mind listening to them nearly as much as I once did. In the last week I've had LL Cool J, Ice Cube, and now Kendrick Lamar. This was okay, again not something I would probably listen to again but I didn't hate it either. 2 stars.

Bish. I like the cadence in Kendrick's raps. Chill and mellow with good storytelling - Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst was my favorite.

absolutely love kendrick lamar but i would have to say this would not be considered a favorite album of his. couple songs i wasn't the biggest fan of, but overall it still had killer bops.

I really like Kendrick Lamar, although I couldn't tell you why. It feels new and exciting (although this was released a while ago now), even though the lyrics don't speak directly to me. It feels like he has something to say and knows how to say it. I played this but wasn't giving it my full attention, and it doesn't really work as background. One to revisit.

We are spoiled with riches with Kendrick albums, and this one’s only sin is that it’s not my *favorite* Kendrick album, that it’s eclipsed by the artist that he would eventually become. Still, you see absolutely everything in this album that will stay with Kendrick… his eye for drama, his sly way of turning what sounds like a sleeper song into something that never leaves your head, his lyricism, his insistence, the mood. All there. And some of the most influential records of the 2010s! No way this isn’t 5. We are too spoiled when it comes to Kendrick. 5/5

Dit album draai ik regelmatig voor m'n plezier. Dan is het al gauw een 5 waard, ondanks dat het album skits bevat. Als je goed luistert of meeleest met de teksten dan is het album een haast cinematografisch conceptalbum van het hoogste niveau, maar eerlijk gezegd is die laag van genialiteit iets te hoog gegrepen voor me. Ik vind de muziek, de stijl en de flow gewoon heerlijk. Hier staan enorm veel nummers op die ik op elk moment van de dag zou kunnen luisteren. Er is variatie, ook al is het allemaal rap/hiphop. Fantastisch album.

he really relies on mock misogyny on this album. the things that are being criticized tend to sound like hes actually revering them. its not a good look. all of the found tape recordings get tiring. there are some strong tracks that really convey the “what its like to be black in LA, in america” but it strays and fails just as much. its a worthy attempt bit falls flat.

"good kid, m.A.A.d. city" is second studio album and major label debut by American rapper Kendrick Lamar. It was recorded in California, Miami and Atlanta, used 15 different producers including Dr. Dre, Pharrell Williams and Just Blaze and had guest appearances from Drake, Dre, Jay Rock, MC Eint and Ann Wise . It is a concept album following Lamar's teenage experience in his native gang and drug infested Compton. The album received high critical acclaim and also had big commercial success hitting #2 in US and #16 in UK. Prayers, an eerie organ and whispering open "Sherane a.k.a Master's Splinter's Daughter." This transitions to "Bitch, Don't Kill my Vibe." Slower, laid back, smooth. Female baking vocals. Originally that was to be Lady Gaga but her parts were due to timing issues. She later released the original version of the song. Alright, we got bells and different beats in "Backseat Freestyle." Here's where you start to hear the brilliance of Lamar's lyrics as he juxtaposes an MLK speech with current rappers and their obsession with material things while he's riding in the backseat. "Poetic Justice" has Lamar and Drake rapping about partying, love and essentially you get what you put into it. In "Swimming Pools (Drank)" he describes the inherent alcoholism in his family and culture. Swirling music into kicking beats. "Sit up! Drank! Wake up! Drank! Pass out! Drank." The highlight of the album just may be the 12-minute epic "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst." It jazzy hinting at where he would go on future albums. Two separate stories, one involving a friend admiring his work, but could never do it and the other, a woman telling him off about a song on his first album about her sister and her lifestyles. Different samples including a Bill Withers' song. The music on the album is unique for the gansta category - laid back, chill and electronic. It reminds me a lot of 90's era Outkast. He's telling compelling stories using different rap voices and rappers. There's every indication here of the massive succes he would continue to have on future albums.

Best Song: Backseat Freestyle. In an album of great tracks, this one has an elevated intensity that makes it stand just above the others. Honorable mention to Money Trees and Poetic Justice. Worst Song: Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe - Remix. Jay-Z adds nothing transformative to this already great song. Overall: Such an incredible, wide-ranging album. This might be Kendrick at his best. It is amazing to see how he is able to transition from a lean-back, apathetic anthem like "Swimming Pools (Drank)" directly a meandering story telling track like "Sing About Me, I'm Dying". Every track feels iconic, most every feature feels like it brings a complementary energy. Even the skits serve to fit the theme and elevate the surrounding tracks.

The first big Kendrick album and the last for me on the list. Walking back in order of maturity has been an interesting review of Lamar’s work - while I prefer the hyper-focused lyrics and interlocking beats of the DAMN era, this LP has a sense of sprawling chaos that feels much more raw and alive than anything that comes after it. Lacks some polish and gets way too loose/experimental at times, but has some killer consciousness /and/ instrumental combos that may be some of my fav Kendrick tracks I’ve heard.

good kid, m.A.A.d city was already in my top 10 albums of all time before finding this site. It remains cemented there, for now. I am an absolute sucker of stories told over an album, a trait that many of my favorites share.
