Reviews (page 8 of 14)
Good country vibes. Sleepy tunes.
Great album. Solid opener.
It's clear why Bob Dylan is accepted as one of the best songwriters in American history. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan sets the stage for the folk-rock of the 1970s. This is a very solid album. Best Songs: Blowin' in the Wind, Masters of War Worst Songs: A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
While his protest music is extremely poignant and skillfully written, I find Freewheelin' more versatile. I like the more absurdist, blues, and country themes he mixes into the album along with the protest songs. It seems to me like a sort of precursor to his electric stuff even before Another Side of Bob Dylan came out, and I love it for that. It's just a mellow exploration of Dylan's life and thought stream, with a bit of humor mixed in.
Stands up as one of his best, even after 60 years.
My first Dylan album I've listened to front to back and I'm glad I had a good experience listening to it. Now I'm excited to delve a little deeper into the rest of his catalogue.
Hmm, so that’s what dylan sounds like, some classics here
classic
One man, a guitar and a harmonica - yet despite this austere palette, it's never dull. This album crackles with ideas and is a superb prequel as to what will come later. It's not all mature, but some of the material here - 'Blowin' in the Wind', 'Don't Think Twice...' and especially 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' - outstrips anything ninety-eight percent of songwriters will ever achieve.
This is the only Dylan album I own and the only one I really know. I wish I could lop off a couple songs here and there and just pare this down to a lean, mean hit machine but I know that's sacrilegious to suggest in certain (boomer) corners. "Don't Think Twice" is probably my favorite of the bunch. I wish he would do more fingerpicking like on that tune elsewhere on the record. It adds a nice bit of sonic variety to the more chord-strummin' ditties that make up the bulk of the album. Also really like the closer. It's like he's making himself laugh. Incredible that people wanted him to be the O.G. social justice warrior when the last words on this album were about making love to Elizabeth Taylor and "catching' hell from Richard Burton." But guys I'd still like to drive over that harmonica with the tallest truck ever made. Back and forth until it runs out of gas. And then push it once in neutral for good measure.
Dylan is just too good, some great songs, some fall a little flat to me, but on my rotations for sure.
Girl from the North Country was lovely, not a bad album
A pretty good album by Bob Dylan, one of those albums that needs multiple listens
Listened to it twice at 2am.
I'm not a Dylan stan, but this is probably as good as he'll ever sound. A lot of his best songwriting, stripped down to their bare essence. Still, even though I understand his performance, I'd rather put on some Tom Petty instead. A-
Lot of classic songs on this Blowin in the Wind, Master of War, Corrina,Corrina, Hard Rain, Don't think Twice.. I think why this a 5 star record is that Dylan was 21 when he recorded this album which blows my mind. However I like his electric work much better.
I enjoyed it, this is sort of the album I think of when I think of folk. And to think he was so young when he made this is crazy.
Great album. Emotional throughout, happy to hear this
like early dylan more
Listened before.
Big road trip vibes
Blowin’ in the Wind is a classic song, one of my favorite cover songs as performed by Peter, Paul, and Mary Looking forward to listening to the rest of this album. Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right another amazing often covered classic Corrina, Corrina is my favorite on the album, the melody just easily flows.
Prefer folk Dylan to electric Dylan tbqh
Cruisiin
Only Dylan CD I've ever owned. The "Blowin' in the Wind" episode of the "A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs" podcast helps contextualize Bob and the folkie scene a LOT.
Bem bom, melhores músicas: Blowing' in the wind e Masters of war.
Solid collection of great folk tunes. Bob’s got a gift!
I enjoyed this album way more than I expected. I usually don't like Bob Dylan's voice at all. There are some really standout songs like "Masters of War" on this album. I definitely prefer more traditionally structured songs then his sing/talk rambling songs, but over all the recording sounds great and his voice actually sounds really nice. I might actually listen to this album again.
Bueno, por algo es un clásico. Es uno de mis favoritos de Dylan.
(75th album on 27/05/22) Was about to type I've never heard such a concise debut album, then I learned this is Dylan's 2nd album. -_- still, "Hard Rain", "Don't Think Twice", even "Talkin' World War III"- a real classic
"Blowin in The Wind", and "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" are probably two of the best songs ever written. They are accompanied by other greats such as the protest song "Masters of War". It's amazing to hear one man a guitar and a harmonica create so much colour and atmosphere. I struggled not to give it 5 stars but I need to leave room for Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde so 4 it is
my least favorite Great Bob Dylan album.
Veldig bra, men ikkje hans beste.
Great
Easy listening
I think this is the first album by Dylan that I actually enjoyed as a whole. The tone of the album fits his voice better and for once I could focus on the lyrics without being (too) overwhelmed by the harmonica.
Bob Dylan showcases how good of a storyteller he is once again in this album, even if he gets a tad too preachy at times.
Great lyricism and playing as usual for Bob Dylan. Fantastic album.
I fuck with Bob Dylan lowkey. Very chill and nice. Music for the love of music.
I really enjoyed this album. Will def listen again and as an enjoyed of horrid midwest emo vocals the singing was right up my alley :D
oh nice, I’ve been going through Bob Dylan’s discography anyway, but it’s nice to give this album another listen for what it’s worth he did start out very talented but this is only the beginning, 8/10
4/5
This album is like a singer songwriter wiki. Got all the elements you want. Bobs voice defines him but i also can be a deal breaker some songs it fits some don't. But overall good listen
Really pleasant sounding at times, and rather sinister at others; Bob Dylan's second album is a showcase of his lyrical talent at such a young age. Melody-wise it can start to blend together, however there's something here for everyone.
Great poetry storytelling. Very bare and stripped back guitar playing. It's all about the storytelling. Brilliant.
Don't Think Twice It's Alright may be the best Dylan song. The others were very good too.
Wow, nearly 60 years old now this album. The classics are Blowin in the Wind and Don't Think Twice, probably two of my favourite Dylan tracks, and Hard Rain. Some great lyrics of course and the odd hint of rockabilly. Only his second album so not quite into his stride but well worth a listen.
"Masters of War" is appropriate for the times.
24.02.22 was one hell of a day to get an album with "Masters of War" and "Talkin' World War III Blues"
Fantastic. Only not 5 because I'm not a great fan of goofy Bob, evident on a couple of tracks, and he's made several other albums that are 5.
Nice acoustic folk and blues from beginning to end with a good portion of truely great songs. Very accessable to listen to as well. Blowin in the Wind was my favourite.
Vive le folk tous mes homies détestent le folk
the king
Decent album - recognised quite a few tunes on it
Very much a defining album in music history. I'm glad to have heard it. I don't believe it will make it into my daily rotation, but will probably listen back to some of the tracks.
A true classic with some great songs on it. Gets a little samey, but it's early Dylan doing his thing.
Bob Dylan is a favorite and it's hard to beat some of the songs on this record. Having said that, this isn't one of my top Dylan records. For instance, I tend to prefer the period after he went electric over this one. Some of the deeper cuts can get a little tedious. Still, definitely a classic.
I can see why he is considered a legend.
8/10
Decent album, the lyrics definitely stand out and it's the kind of thing that I could possibly go back to revisit, yes.
The first Bob Dylan album I've drawn on this list, and it runs right back to the blooming of his career, with a set of razor-sharp songs that cut to the bone. At once concise and sprawling, playful and venomous, "Freewheelin'" is magic. Young Bob must have shaken the folk scene inside out here, creating a book of new standards with a set of originals (some arrangements lifted from existing folk songs). It's incredible to think that "Blowin' In The Wind", "Don't Think Twice...", "Masters of War" and "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" all bloomed from the same album, and for most of the world it was the first they'd heard of this promising young enigma. All four are amazing songs with no case to argue, so I don't feel much need to eulogise about them further... except to say that for me, "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" is the clear standout- dense, dramatic, foreboding and still rendered somewhat ambiguous by its major-key singalong quality. Is that rising chorus doom-laden, cathartic, triumphant? No idea, but it's fun as hell to join in. There are some other great concise works on here worthy of mention: "Oxford Town" zips by in protest and muted anger, while serving as one of the record's catchiest songs. "Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance" demonstrates a yo-yoing, flexing vocal and some energetic guitar work, even if it doesn't showcase the record's typical lyrical depth. Some of the lesser material appears throwaway by comparison: "Bob Dylan's Dream", "Bob Dylan Blues" and "I Shall Be Free" paint a picture of a freewheelin' artist having a lot of fun, but don't capture the intensity of the other work, only hinting at the surreal stream of consciousness masterworks that would be yet to come. "Talkin' World War III Blues" does the talkin' blues style best and renders these other tracks obsolete by comparison. The few duds aside, "Freewheelin'" is a stunning portrait of Dylan the folk artist: he really did have the world at his fingertips here, armed with no more than his lyrics, an acoustic guitar and some harmonica. For a moment listening to this album, I can sympathise slightly with the outraged "Judas" crying folkies in '65. Even when the drums and bass enter the mix on "Corrina, Corrina", it feels slightly jarring: was it strictly needed here? There's no doubt that this is a masterpiece in folk music and deserves to be remembered as such. While it's a clear 9/10 for me personally, I also much prefer the work Dylan would go onto just two years later, so I'll keep this one at a four.
8/10
The greatest storyteller and by all accounts the first rapper. The only difference is instead of beats, it is an acoustic guitar and harmonica. Incredible and legendary songs. A but more dynamics would make this a 5 star like his electrical debut, but an amazing piece of songwriting work.
Bob Dylan is always a great listen, what a magnificent storyteller but in this case, the bare bones acoustic background music just left one wanting a bit more
Little Robert Zimmerman, eh. Definitely sounds like a duck farting in a spacesuit.
Voice of a generation? Voice of a duck farting in a space suit more like.
Great songwriting.
Folk songs
I really like this one
Bob Dylan is the type of artist that that has so much material to dive into, it's pretty intimidating for the uninitiated as to where to start. Invariably in these cases, people start with greatest hits compilations, and then it becomes difficult to assess individual albums because you've listened to all the bangers in one place. That said, this albums first track became the anthem for an entire decade. So..... props for that
Some total classics, some songs I could take or leave
Liked this much more than Time Out Of Mind
Having heard some of the songs before, after listening to the whole album I think Dylan's Nobel win is a bit more reasonable.
Enjoyed this more than I though I would. Sometimes his voice just irks me, but not this time.
Bien, pero no es de mis favoritos
The album that kicked off Dylan's career as a genius songwriter. A pure folk album with blues underlying several of them. Most are based on traditional folk tunes through the centuries. Lyrics cover themes of nuclear war and heartbreak among others. We have some of the most influential songs of all time on this album, starting off with the protest anthem "Blowin in the Wind." So simple yet so powerful, with a juxtaposition between the clear visibility or ambiguity of the wind symbolism. Another protest song "Masters of War" gets increasingly intense and confrontational, what I consider to be a precursor of where Dylan will take music. But that's not the most morbid song. That goes to "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," one of the most complex songs in his repertoire. The song is full of a hundred stories, contrasting the experiences of an apocalyptic world, whether frightening, pitiful, or innocent in the face of fallout. I love how he just goes on and on. The next side gives us another masterpiece, "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right." My favorite part is how we learn more about our protagonist and his relationship with his ex (with some ambiguity). More than just a simple breakup song. There's something special when a songwriter can get us to change our judgments of the story as the song progresses. Tracks flow really well. All the songs are well written. Although I felt the more blues songs were on the weak side. Album dragged on longer than necessary, but the choice of closing track was good, ending on a lighter note.
👍
not bad, can't believe he was 22 when this was released
Just exactly what you should be expecting. The anti war American hippy folk album
1st one! Was pretty good, listened while playing arena, maybes would’ve given 5 if listened to lyrics more.
This was the album that made Dylan a hero to a certain section of the American public, via his mature acoustic guitar and his even more mature lyrics. There are better Dylan albums but this is the one with the best lyrics.
have to be in the right mood for Dylan. I can see the appeal and love some of his lyrics and his energy. 4* for the high points outnumbering the tedious.
De onde vem o hit Blowin in the Wind, realmente era como o álbum teria que começar. E tem também master of War.
Amazing songwriting over folksy instrumentation. Standout Tracks: Blowin' In The Wind, Girl From the North Country, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Talkin' World War III Blues, Corrina Corrina, I Shall Be Free
solid. Needs more listens.
I've always like Bob Dylan songs, but I never really go out of my way to listen to them. Despite his niche voice, his songs are very endearing when combined with his acoustic guitar and harmonica, and despite him being so influential on music, these songs still sound fresh which just goes to show how important good songwriting is. That all being said, I think that there are other Bob Dylan records that I will like more than this one. It's pretty good, but I have a feeling there is better Dylan out there. Highlights: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, and 13.
Don't think twice, it's alright. always so beautiful
2nd half lags a little but a classic
Early Bob Dylan is the best and this still stands as one of the best for me.
4.25
Classic bluesy country rock. Classic Dylan.
A classic album that gets better with a second listen. It reminds me that I should listen more to Bob Dylan, still haven't listened to the other studio albums at all.
Really relaxing music with a flavour of sadness Cool use of the guitar and accordion 4/5
I like Bob Dylan anyway but had only listened to anthologies. I liked this but there were definitely stronger and weaker tracks.
-I like the jamming harmonica on "Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance" -All of it sounded exactly how you'd expect Bob Dylan to sound, some guitar playing with Bob Dylan talking/singing lol
Great lyrics and very easy to listen to.
First time listening: 10/13 songs liked I don't know what it is, but I freaking love Bob Dylan. lyrics aside, which elevates his songs to another level, his form for simple folk melody and guitar picking is intimate and relatable. Some out-of-tune strings on some songs, but I'm just being picky. 5 songs saved
Not my favourite Dylan album but enough to warrant a great review, there are 5 or 6 absolute masterpieces on this album but a couple in the second half that I can easily avoid. A Hard Rains Gonna Fall & Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright are always welcome.
Will always relish a chance to listen again to this.
bob dylan, man. i feel u.
Great album to start, always liked Dylan but never properly listened to him. Don't think twice it's alright was my favourite.
A classic. It's not a surprise to me that Dylan is considered one of the best songwriters of all time.
Great album - you can hear the influence in several of the lyrics that have been borrowed or interpolated over the years in music and culture. Tons of important protest songs.
Good if you like folk, some fun and clever tracks
Nice
Ok
Good simple rendering of Dylan's signature voice and guitar sound. Blowing in the Wind is my fave. Some are not as good. Good for background while working or crafting.
4/5 A lot better than I thought it would be. Modern singer/songwriters owe Dylan a lot.
bobby D and the story songs!!!!
Actually really fun and catchy, even though I'm never in the mood to hear Bob Dylan
Really good, but doesn't have the high points of some of his later stuff
bob released this when he was 22. twenty fuckin two and it has masters of war, blowing in the wind, girl from the north county and don't think twice. Some filler, granted, but easily 8.8/10. And it's probably only my 5th or 6th favourite dylan album.
His second studio album and in my opinion beaten only by Blonde On Blonde and Highway 61 Revisited.
Superb
An old favorite!
Good
Love this but it's been a while
Classic
7/10
I don't hate Bob Dylan
Enjoyed a bit of Bob. Once again I was reminded of my grandad, who regularly played the harmonica. Even my youthful Uncle John doesn't really pick up his guitar or banjo any more. A grandad himself, his light is fading. The politics in Bob's lyrics are dated and, in some ways, have lost their relevance, but still a good listen
Bob's got soul oozing out of every chord he strum strum strums. 7/10
Classic
Always knew Dylan was the protest song guy, but never knew how ANGRY he could get. Love it. Screw the fat cats!
very glad I have given this a proper listen again. Dylan is a legend
that must've been amazing to hear in 1963. pretty awesome now.
I get what all the fuss is for
Surprised I enjoyed this as much as I did - never gave Dylan a critical listen before. 4 stars, Bobby. Well done.
Alright

What a legend, once again! So many hits on the same album, and such genius writing. If it mere a bit more musically interesting, I'd probably give it a 5
You can feel the raw emotion on a lot of these tracks. This once again reminds me of how produced new music is. You're not hearing the bests of thousands of takes that are strung together and heavily edited, tweeked, and fixed. You're hearing what's probably the first take, warts and all. I'm imagining what it would be like if this was released today. Not with the references to Kennedy, but a modern poet with a guitar writing folk songs that capture the imagination of a generation I find it curious how this track ages. There are so many references to the culture that these tracks were made in that some are universal and timeless, and others you have to google the lyrics to figure out what he's talking about What does a rating mean in this instance? How do you rate an album like the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan? It's a great album, a bulwark in time, with many great songs on it. 4/5?
It was a fine album, just not necessarily my cup of tea
graaaande dylan
I loved a lot of the romantic songs on this record, it feels really freeing and original, clearly one of Dylan's best efforts. "Girl from the North Country" is the best of the bunch imo but there are loads of classic Dylan songs on here!
Spent more time listening to the lyrics as I wasn’t working this time and they are incredible. The music I do find repetitive throughout though
Good album great lyrics. Can get a bit repetitive.
My feelings regarding Bob Dylan are incredibly complex. On the one hand, I am aware that his music and unique sound revolutionized music and influenced so many. On the other, he stole much of his music from Appalachian artists, sounds repetitive, and can be annoying. This is likely his best album, however.
Morning Coffee/Tea music. Sitting outside on a porch or in the woods and watching the world wake up. Feels like a chilly morning sunrise.
loved the ballad song form, very simple background music wise which makes it even more beautiful.
4/4.5
great album many classic on 1 album
Great album
A classic. Sparse, full of Dylan's wit, and contains what I consider some of his best songs. Favorite tracks: "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright", "Masters of War", "Girl From the North Country"
more of a 9/10 really
I like the message in so many of these songs, definitely worth it for the lyrics. Folk country sounding.
Classic slice of Zimmerman. Went on to make better albums, but this early number is archetypal Dylan for the purists!
Butts
damn its the dune guy
2.8/5 Favorite Songs: Blowin' in the Wind Masters of War A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan has its moments, and I can absolutely appreciate its importance, but it reinforced what I've discovered over the course of this list: I respect Bob Dylan far more than I actually enjoy listening to him.
I don't like Dylan's voice, at all. This is an album that belongs on the list, unlike most of the ones I don't care for.
Dylan just doesn't do it for me. This was probably the most I've been able to enjoy a Dylan album so far though. Less instrumentation made it easier to hear his voice, which wasn't as rough as in later years. Easier to hear the poetry and it worked better for me. Listening to this though, I kept thinking it doesn't do anything that Paul Simon, Townes Van Zandt, or Woodie Guthrie don't do better. (Draws a direct comparison to Simon and Garfunkel's superior "Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme".) I hated the harmonica. It was piercing and obnoxious. Made me ready to skip to the next track every time. 3.5 stars - but would have been 4 without the stupid harmonica.
As expected, the lyrics were incredible. My wife and I have loved Blowing in the Wind for years so I was excited to listen to the whole collection. In particular I loved masters of war. Wild how relatable the lyrics are to even today. All that said, I can’t say I am a huge fan of the timbre of Bob Dylan’s music. I’m a huge John Denver fan for example, love folk, but I feel that Bob Dylan’s music lacks a certain type of musicality that I look for. That’s why I gave this one a lower rating, but his lyrical genius bright this back up to an average 3 for me
i would need to have a very specific mood for this
Can't believe we're speed running Bob Dylan. I guess the folk rock trilogy had less accessible lyrics. This is very stripped down, with only a guitar and his voice (wait, don’t forget that harmonica!). The lyrical images are more straightforward in their metaphors than his later stuff.
A hard rain is going to fall
Bob Dylan is easily one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Somewhat ironically, that skill didn't emerge until this, his second album, after he was nearly dropped from his label as his debut features only two original songs. I can recognize greatness, especially Blowin' In the Wind, A hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, and Masters of War, and still find this album boring. Sorry, Bob, I prefer your up-tempo and harder-edged tunes.
Enjoyed the harmonica, and it was fine, but not my thing.
Not heard before but I liked the last Bob album on this list and gave it 5 stars … this one was slightly disappointing. Plugged in Bob was better.
Not blown away. Too much piercing harmonica.
5/10
liked it more than i thought - i actually found dylan's voice not to be as annoying as usual, but his cadence and lyrics could get super grating. 1. A Hard Rain - undeniably fantastic 2. Masters of War 3. Down the Highway
Pretty good album. Very based and simple. Lot of highways too. Girl From the North Country, Masters of War, and Oxford Town were my favorites. 6.4/10.
Very calm and peaceful. Production is very, very good, can listen to this album over and over while doing some work or while driving. It sounds like country music vibes? All songs are similar tho, and you can tell they’re from the same album, and there's not much distinction between songs. Almost all the songs are his own compositions, and he has written most of them too, and it is strangely political even though it sounds very laid back.
Yeah, it sounded kinda nice, I don't know if I just wasn't in the mood for it. Best song: Don't Think Twice, It's Alright
I am aware that this is an absolute classic album. I know that this is where Bob Dylan started adding contemporary en critical lyrics. The album was just not a very pleasant listen to me. It’s monotomous, the highlight is the opening track. Bob Dylan will always be divisive. I am not on team-Dylan-is-the-greatest
contains some of my favorite Bob Dylan but a lot of other Bob Dylan i don't particularly care for.
The best of him, so far. „Btw, how many Albums by Mr. Dylan are featured here?“ -„Yes!“ Fav: Oxford Town
This is far removed from today's music, Im not sure it can be rated alongside the others. Perhaps, like classical music, it shouldn't be listed here.
Voice apart, there are some good songs on here before he became fully electric. Not necessarily someone or something I’d revisit too often, but there are some top lyrics.
I’m not hating on Bob but this was fine Maybe 2.5 ?
It's okay
Freewheelin folk from Bob - I still like the last Dylan album a lot more than this, but this was ok. I think it is really hard to appreciate Dylan for me especially with a small child. He just drones lines. Harmonica parts were good
Is this genre called country song? I'm not sure, but it was exciting and pretty good.
You whiny miserable Anerican cunt stop making me listen to your shit for brains excuses for music
Great
Another 3 star BD offering, come on RGP this album is great but give us some of the really good ones… Tom.
Fun fact: when my cousin was about 4/5 years old, she was obsessed with Bob Dylan. She used to insist that he had the most beautiful voice she'd ever heard. And the rest of my family are certain that those were the first time those words had ever been spoken.
Very anti war. Peak songwriting.
Some moments of absolute magic and a fair bit of atonal, sneering, crooning. I have a complicated relationship with Dylan. Songwriting is amazing but sometimes it feels like a lot of work to listen to.
Mixed bag. Some nice classic Dylan.
Det funkar utmärkt i Girl from the North Country men betydligt sämre i Masters of war.
Listening session: may 26th, while eating breakfast and getting ready in the morning Listened to before: listened to two songs before Thoughts: still not a huge fan of Bob Dylan, but I enjoyed this album more than the other ones I’ve gotten on here Favourite tracks: Blowin’ in the Wind, Girl from the North Country & Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right
Ah. More Dylan. This one did feel thematically appropriate for Memorial Day…
Country,but not my taste
Bob Dylan doesn't go electric quite yet. Important and snoozy.
The Answer Is Blowin' In The Wind 1001 Albums Generator 298 (5/25/2026) Nothing quite like listening to Masters of War at my defense contractor job. Not Bob's finest or most memorable album, but there's some good stuff here. 3.5/5, rounded down to 3. Favs: Blowin' in the Wind Masters of War A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Least Fav: Oxford Town
Boring. Not the worst thing ever 3/5
I like the first song. Resonated with me through this addiction phase. The rest not so much.
i like it and maybe will listen again to this but depends to situation. it's too rowdy, i like the music tho
lovely thing, not the stuff id listen too by myself proactively
Always pleasantly surprised
Me gustó, medio rock, medio country, medio blues. Definitivamente roadtrip material.
I like Bob Dylan. I mean no disrespect when I say that, if Stephen Fry is, as often stated, "a stupid person's idea of smart person," then Dylan is "a stupid person's idea of a poet." He is a songwriter, a frequently great one, but the thought-replacing cliché that repeats through so many reviews here and so much of the conversation about Dylan does him a disservice. When I first heard it, as a child, the poetry of Blowin' in the Wind reminded me of nothing more than the spiritually uplifting posters that directed the primary school walls. Hardly gnomic, the sentiments are slight and I'm not sure any one line stands up to much scrutiny, although one could stick any of them over an image of a gull in flight, attribute it to Rumi, and post it on Facebook. Again, I don't mean this as a slight. Although, he took the money from the Nobel Committee, Dylan's old statement about being a song and dance man holds true to me. Even if, as he suggests, the tune of Blowin' the Wind was taken from an old spiritual, it is the accumulation of tune, sloganeering, and performance that make the song enduring. If Dylan is a poet, it is only to the extent that it is embodied in song. He is a recording artist. And a remarkable one. As we know from his ongoing changes and alterations in concert, he is not exacting, nothing is distilled, but rather the recordings capture songs in motion. To me this makes him very distinct from a poet - in the contemporary understanding - and, indeed, makes the term something of an injustice. He is a spirit of tumultuous energy, as prone to generating lead as gold. There are both present here. even within the one song. It is not a book of poetry. It is a young man in a studio, capturing ideas that will change over time. There is good and bad, lead and gold, song and stuff, guitar and harmonica, a good first 60% and a less good back 40%. Imagine what this guy could do if he went electric. 3 I went back to read what I wrote about Bringing it All Back Home so I wasn’t repeating myself. That’s about it though - mostly the same review with the difference that BIABH at least has a trivial claim to cohesion, being a genuine document of Dylan in one place at one time. Freewheelin‘ is essentially a compilation, with all a compilation‘s cold ambivalence. What satisfaction can there be in a narrative or emotional arc that begins with Blowin‘ in the Wind and ends with the double tap goofballery of Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance and I Shall Be Free? Girl from the North Country, A Hard Rain‘s…, Don’t Think Twice, Bob Dylan‘s Dream..etc taken for the disparate jewels they are. Bob Dylan is the best songwriter there has ever been and that’s all the satisfaction you’re offered on these early ‘albums‘. 3.5/5
I'm probably going to annoy a few people, but found this enjoyable but middling. A fusion between folk and pop? That said I've never given Bob a good listening to before - I will again. Went 3 stars, only because 3.5 isn't an option. Not quite there for a 4.
it was fun, and felt nostolgic even tho i haven't listening to much bob dylan. there were some songs that were incredibily annoying but anothers that were fun and i enjoyed. I liked corrina, corrina
Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? I know a few songs How do I feel about this artist? His voice can be grading and he can get kind of annoying but I don’t dislike him as much as other people seem to Pre-Listen Thoughts: I don’t know if I’ll like it as much as my previous deal album, but I’m open to it. I know the lyrics are gonna be good. Favorite track(s): Blowin in the Wind Post-Listen Thoughts: I do enjoy some good harmonica, that in the acoustic guitar really saves this album for me. The lyrics were good in his singing works sometimes but other times it did get very grading. At one point he was just kind of blabbering into the microphone.
As Dylan albums go, this is a highlight. Some of his best work
Pretty chill but the harmonica is a little much at points
Heard Before; 3.5; This is another one of those "classic" albums that I appreciate more now than I did when I tried with previous listens. Favorite Track: Blowin' in the Wind
There's a saying, I love children, but I couldn't eat a whole one. That's how I feel about Bob Dylan. I'm happy listening to Blowin' In The Wind, Masters Of War and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right once in a while, as with a number of the other songs, and his voice sounds better on this album than on other ones I've heard. But, songs with their short stanzas get repetitive with lyrics not always holding my attention, and he's still got the ability to make the harmonica sound like it's been swallowed by a donkey, so the whole album then becomes a bit of a chore. Still, this sounds better than Blood On The Tracks - there are more songs that I like and I agree with the protest. He's clearly a great poet. A high 3 stars.

‘Blowing in the wind’ A lovely campfire feel. Which track 2 keeps up with. ‘Masters of war’ sounds like an epic song however being critical it feels like the song is building and building but then ultimately doesn’t get there which was a massive shame. ‘Bob Dylan’s blues’ repetitive and actually really mundane which is now where the album seems to be heading and I’m only half way through. ‘Bob Dylan’s dream’ 😴 ‘Honey just allow me one more chance’ finally the tempo has picked up a bit and intrigued me again but unfortunately it’s too little too late. The album ends with yet another really good track.. Overall therefore I see 3 great tracks to start the album and 2 great tracks to end the album but everything in between I just found so mundane and repetitive which was a real shame. Fave track- ‘masters of war’ Worst track- ‘Oxford town’ The great tracks just helping the overall score to hit 6.5/10
i dont like his voice kinda cliche
No soy muy fan de la armónica. Voz agradable, pero no es mi estilo
Ihan rentoa soitantaa, mutta kyllä tääki omaan makuun vähän turhan hengettömäksi jäi. Aamuvuoron tunnelmaan kuitenkin sopi ihan mukavasti
3.5
I know this is absolutely essential to the oeuvre of Dylan and the genre of folk...not so much to my taste tho. There are some unfamiliar deep tracks here that are beautiful, intriguing, and touching and then some that are forgettable.
I liked this one. Bob Dylan has a pretty distinct style that comes through. I think a lot of the songs blended together so maybe that lowered my opinion of the album but I think it all sounded good. There was a vibe that was maintained and I appreciate that.
Blowin' in the wind
Also nice
Old-school acoustic dylan. The dude can write some songs. Thats for sure. Im not all that well versed in that type of thing and I cant still see it. Its not usually my bag. But I had alot of fun with this. Saved a handful of songs and enjoyed it too to bottom. Its not the greatest thing ive ever heard but the greatness is recognized. I get it if you cant stand the singing but I like unique voices so im all in on that part. Just I dont get the full experience not being all that into lyrics. And thats the bottom line. Its great and if I were a different type of listener it would be top tier. Just for me its very very good rather than the 2nd coming of christ
So far I am not drowning in harmonica, which I appreciate it. Dylan is such an amazing lyricist. Very enjoyable.
cute folk guitar harmonica cowboy-like free politique engagé entêtant tranches de vie storytelling focused simple hope through a hard but beautiful world
I mean it's Bob Dylan i kinda got bored
I quite enjoyed sitting listening to this. The songs did all blend together but I appreciated the vibe and harmonica.

Pretty much what I expected from a Bob Dylan album. Never really keen on his vocals, but young Bob is better than older Bob. The songwriting is great, and the way his playing drops in and out between vocals sometimes makes it feel like a vocal in its own right.
Oh ja
US country music - I might understand why people in US love it, but for me it is not that sensative and deep
I like this much more than I expected to. I mean the issues I've had with previous Dylan material just aren't really present here - the production is fine so the harmonica isn't like nails on a chalkboard, Bob's voice sounds less grating, etc. Many of the themes ring very true today. It's perfectly cromulent folk music. Nothing I'd really go back to, but pretty inoffensive with some bright spots. "Masters of War" is very powerful.
Great 60’s Dylan album
Okay album. This time his harmonica wasn't as present and annoying.
Doesn’t do much to me. Wouldn’t even say it’d be a good background music. But a good point is this album doesn’t fit into some boring pattern someone can use to produce millions of songs easily.
probably my favorite bob dylan album to date on this list. this album really showcases what i would like to call 'bob dylan's stream of conscious lyrics'. he just kinda rambles on and im not sure how all of the lyrics match up to make a full song, but all in all the music is nice
Not really much to say about this album. It’s classic Bob Dylan, so some will love it but mostly it was a product of its era that hasn’t completely aged well musically.
It’s a folk record. At the time I’m sure it was dangerous because it contained ideas. As a forum for Bob to express ideas that ran counter to conservative America it is a fine demonstration. As an example of musical expression it is certainly that. As an example of excellence- it is not. It’s Bob and it for me is unlistenable. It’s the voice. It is unmusical to me. I do not diminish the quality of the songwriting and the topical references- they are excellent for the time period. The real issue was never the musicianship - it’s creative. The problem has always been that Bob’s songs toughened up and sung by others tend to be better than the original. Too bad there are not many punk and metal versions out there. Anyway, the only think freewheelin about the record is that someone at some point should have taken the wheel. 3/5
To był... dobry album.
Loving whatver the hell is wrong with him
It was really just ok. lyrics are goodl. every song sounds the same. but its bob dylan. 3/5
I seem to not really like Bob Dylan Stand-outs - Masters of War - Oxford Town
Started off strong, and then faded back to just okay, slightly taxing, and always monotonous, Bob Dylan.
appreciated it more than i honestly anticipated. when i watched the movie i thought the music was so mid. but i was listening to the first couple of songs today and i understood. the social activism and lyrics are song. truly a song writer of the time
the harmonica got under my skin, though I vibed with the songs more than I thought I would cause im not a folk music kinda person, sure if you like the genre this would be a lot better alright I guess, not my cup of tea
it's not the type of genre I enjoy listening, but this album was really magic and it also has some beautiful songs too.
3,5/5 ✨ i liked but it isn’t my cup of tea!
the hero worship around this dude is exhausting and I've always kind of hated him. is that fair? well no, obviously, but in my defense his fans are so annoying that makes it all the more irritating that this album is fine. it's competent folk rock by a dude who can just barely sing and I enjoyed it a normal amount. I went into this hoping it would either be revelatory and I'd realize that I'd deprived myself of excellent music all this time, or I'd be vindicated for my unfair assessment and could carry on in my righteousness. but it's just fine. I even want to be kinder to it because it's the closest we get to real representation of some classic country on this list I dunno man. one thing I always thought, but this whole project reinforced, is that we fucked up by idolizing a handful of musicians when there's so much beauty in music everywhere. this album is fine. the issue with bob dylan isn't that he's received so much attention necessarily but more that so many other musicians are hidden in that shadow the critics and fans created. absolutely no reason this dude needs seven albums on a list of 1001/1089. christ are his fans insufferable though
I love ya, Bob, but I'm gonna need to you plug it the fuck in. (This is a good record, and "Don't Think Twice" and "Hard Rain" are classics, but just not my preferred Dylan modality.)
Never really cared for BD so this is probably better than what I'm rating it.
Younghood manifesto. Lovely. Dramatic. The deam fucking blues…
3.5/5
Quintessential, pre-electric Bob Dylan. Acoustic guitars, complex lyrics and a youthfulness that hasn’t been beaten down yet.
Started the album, what a beautiful couple of songs, then okay these sound lovely but kind of similar, by the end I was looking forward to it ending, it's all a little samey.
Yet another Bob album... First off, I find it truly hard to believe that Bob is reinventing the wheel every other year and deserves this many spots in the Top1001. His sound hasn't changed much since his debut. Is this based solely on the popularity and impact of the songs included? Granted, "Blowin' In The Wind", "Girl From The North County", "Masters Of War", "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" & "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" are all bonafied hits or super popular track that are heavily covered even today. It's got a ton of his greatest hits, and it's better than a few of his other albums included on this list (most of which are within 5 yrs of one another). I appreciate his good stuff, struggle with his harmonica heavy stuff & the songs with drawn out vocals to extend words at the end of a sentence (you know what I'm talking about!!). All in all, it's enjoyable, but I still think choosing one or two of his albums from this part of his resume would be sufficient. Please, no more Bob albums! 3.5 stars
mid
I like this different Dylan from what I've heard before, but I didn't really pick out much that really stood out to me. Mostly it just was an alright feeling to have on in the background while not really grabbing my attention Standouts Don't Think Twice, It's All Right 3/5
Started well, then tailed off. It was nice and enjoyable to listen to, although I'm not sure there is any particular song I would come back for.
Great acoustic guitar! Bob Dylan is a great songwriter and I can tell his songs would be so much fun to play on guitar. Some of the lyrics are weird, specifically on Talkin' World War 3 Blues, it sounds like he's just talking to himself while a guitar track plays. Fun music, worth the listen.
i would've loved this album if it wasn't for his atrocious voice omg
Bob Dylan is kind of a weird listen for me. I like his guitar playing, but I wish there was a bit more going on musically. Some of his songs are pretty great, but not enough of them to warrant my full attention for the course of a whole album. I like having him on in the background, but get bored with him if I’m actively paying attention. I guess all that is to say that this record has its bright points, but overall, I found this record a little pedestrian. I know, I know, what kind of asshole calls the great Bob Dylan “pedestrian”? I guess this kind of asshole does, because it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t what I would call great either—or even good, really. It was pretty firmly ok. His voice doesn’t bother me, but his cadence and repetitive inflection does. His playing is fine, but the songs need more life than a folksy guitar and a harmonica can give it. The lyrics are…man, I don’t even know. I guess I’ve grown up hearing about how poetic and insightful Bob Dylan is, but his words don’t really resonate with me. Maybe it’s because he’s a bit before my time, maybe it’s just I’ve heard some of these lyrics repeated so much over the years that they’ve become trite. I guess I just find my first experience sitting down with a whole Bob Dylan record to be pretty underwhelming. I do like “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” a good bit though. 6/10
ehh... I still don't know why he's world-renowned, but Im not going to tear this album apart.
It’s good but kind of feels like poetry over track rather than songs? Good but liked some other work better
I’m never just gonna sit and listen to Dylan but I’m glad I can say I’ve heard this
nothing to say, i neither like nor dislike bob dylan
It’s Bob Dylan album #2 for me. Still solid, easy listening.
Iconique ? Oui. Musicalement intéressant ? Oui. Important à la culture musicale ? Oui. Plaisant à écouter ? Pas tant, malheureusement... Note : 3 À réécouter : Non
I don’t like harmonica.
ok
Some iconic songs, and i recognize the importance of this album, but mostly it's not for me.
I know he’s beloved and timeless. Definitely in the singer/songwriter genre this was defining
Historically relevant album. No doubt. A very important album in Americans folk music. Just not that fits my particular taste. Glad it's on this lost though.
Better than I thought it would be.
Don't think twice.... It's alright I guess
First song is cute and brave. I can see the conception every single song haha. Not bad, but i dont like country that much...
As much as I like bob Dylan I dislike him, certain views, weird outlooks as much as some I agree with the rest really throw me off him, as well as making most of his songs up about his views makes some hard to listen to. This is a good album choice with some great songs on, and very inspiring at the time. I think his song writing is outstanding and the way he’s able to change his sound / genre and experiment over the years freely , not giving a hoot. Iconically he is folk music, old American rock. In terms of his voice though, it’s great for the iconic songs and then for me listening to full albums takes a toll, I can listen to him in stages. I like this album, a hard rains going to fall and blowing in the wind are stand outs, along with another 3/4 songs that really catch my ear. I think I really need to listen to this on vinyl Actually, I reckon that would really ramp it up.
First Dylan album I've ever listened to and so far I'm impressed. His performance is on point and to imagine the talent it took to do this in '63! 22 years old when he recorded this too! Not massive on some of the harmonica passages they can really dig in your ear. This is a 3 for now but it could grow to a 4 over time, as you need time to digest songwriting and lyrics such as his.
It might be sacrilege to criticise Bob Dylan, but...most of the songs here seem pretty vague and meandering to me. Not melodic or punchy enough to get my attention. Fine as background music, but I won't remember any of the ones I haven't heard a hundred times already.
3.5 but no like cos so much harmonica
Haven’t listened to much Bob Dylan but I enjoyed this album. Feels like it would be more appropriate to listen to this on vinyl than on a JBL speaker (may need to add a Bob Dylan to the collection)
Bob Dylan on Bob Dylan.
Don’t really care for it but listening to the lyrics won me over a bit. Wouldn’t listen to again though i can’t stand that harmonica
Favorite tracks: Blowin' in the Wind, Girl From the North Country, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Very chill folk record with some really strong highlights. Some of the talking blues moments do lose me, not one of his strongest suits here. Regardless, I am super partial to records that are just a musician and their guitar.
Eh
I am not a massive Bob Dylan fan. Yes, this is an important album in the bigger picture, but I prefer electric Dylan. There were some great songs on this album, but I found the rest a bit dull. I was not overly impressed with the album, but I still enjoyed the listen. It is not an album i desperately need to own and cannot really see myself wanting to listen to again. Standout track was a Hard rains gonna fall by a long shot. I feel like I want to say 4 because it is above average. But I really cannot justify making it a 4, so 3.5 stars
