Reviews (page 8 of 8)

the worst kind of dreck. they can’t even make the cliches that i like work.

Not very good!

The album begins on a bland but inoffensive note. Track #3, "Pull Together," is one of the worst songs I've ever heard, and nearly every track after isn't much better. The only song on here I would even begin to call good is the quiet and eerie closer "Daniella." The vocals actually fit for once and the shitty production takes a backseat. Way too little way too fuckin late tho, this is an abomination. Actually embarrassing that something like this is in the book. One of the worst records I've ever heard.

This is forgettable and based on the reviews time HAS forgotten it. I don't think that's for the worst.

Wow detta va dritt

Wasn't too moved by this. It's not bad but just wasn't that interesting to me. Too many mediocre British artists on this list.

Not for me

1.5 - Bad

my first DNF. Britpop with strings. bored me to tears.

Terribile

Good album but nothing resonated with me. Shame.

Oh damn, this is some bullshit. Not bothering to finish. Throw it in the bin.

Bland indie british pop from the late 90s. Not worth talking about with any detail. Really glad we get more of this boring shit instead of something that people actually should listen to!

I didn’t think they made Liverpudlian musicians more Liverpool than the Fab Four but here we are I guess. Look I enjoy some damn Britpop but this is so utterly generic it’s almost impressive. The album starts pretty great with “Natalie’s Party” and I had some hopes for some good harmony. But then, my god, it just continues to dive further into mediocrity. This is like if Oasis was somehow more strung out and less coherent. And that would be a real feat considering how rough those boys had it. Please give me something better than this unseasoned chicken breast of rock.

Ugh, was really not in the mood for this. I find the vocals incredibly annoying for some reason. It felt bland and so easygoing i get angry. It's like a watered down "Oasis", or "Fleet Foxes". Generic, bland and uninspired. 1 star.

Comedy

Forgettable, over produced, I will never think about this record again as long as I live

This sank.

i'm not gen x enough for this record. but i listened to it end to end.

They know they're not harmonising in tune right? Feels a lot earlier than 1999 which I guess makes this feel a little.... Stale. Sounds like a high school band who got to record a demo as part of a competition. No bueno.

Pass... the first song was good... the rest you can give it a miss

Boah, nicht noch eine "Ich-segel-mal-hinter-Oasis-hinterher-Band". Bin inzwischen sehr beeindruckt wieviele 90er Jahre Britpop Bands der Autor der Liste kennt.

not very good

Borderline unlistenable. Boring pub rock. I hate seeing reviews saying the list is biased towards British bands because US BRITS HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THESE BANDS EITHER! The list is biased towards the shite that Robert Dimery listened to at university, and some other random shit bands that his friends, neighbours and the local homeless happened to be in at the time. THERES SO MANY BETTER ALBUMS THAT COULD BE ON THIS LIST INSTEAD OF THIS SHIT FFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Truly have no clue why I just had to hear this album. Not even the one I would say sounded the worst so far, just detestably generic britpop slop. It was the first album i just couldn't wait for the end of. So. Boring.

Twangy nothingness.

Boring

+: Natalie's Party, Captain's Table, Daniella +-: Beautiful, I Want You, Cornish Town, Since I Met You -: Comedy, Lend's Some Dough, Streets of Kenny, Reinstated --: Pull Together 3,7/10

One of this albums I thought I could suffer through, but by the last couple of songs I just wanted it over - couldn't get into it at all

Oh damn, this is some bullshit. Not bothering to finish. Throw it in the bin.

I don't... I don't get it

Esta fue una pérdida de tiempo, honestamente.

I am hear a ton of Beatles influence, which is fine, but doesn’t do much for me. It’s very non offensive, but not very inspiring in my opinion.

Pre: Never heard of this band or album. After a couple of songs I am realizing that I was expecting something way more upbeat, Flogging Molly-like, for some reason. The album cover really fooled me, so far I am absolutely not impressed. What in the living hell was that modern adult contemporary jazz interlude "Re-instated". This took a turn for the worse quick. Do not recommend.

Nicht meine Richtung

You’d be better off listening to Aaron Carter’s seminal work Aaron’s Party which has the hit single That’s How I Beat Shaq, which should have been titled That’s How I Best Shack. Because it’s a better and more important and impactful album than this, full stop.

Cannot believe this is not one of the albums out of the list by now. It really is nothing. It could be 2 stars but being it so irrelevant it gets

In what world is this essential listening? Asinine album from a band no one remembers 25 years later. This is a ridiculous inclusion on this list. “Daniella” is the only enjoyable track on what sounds like a demo from a pub cover band. Ugh. 2/10

i love music created only for licensing!

Annoying vocals. Wanted to turn this off quickly.

This aint it

Didn't give the whole album a full listen cause I kinda got the cut of their jib after a few songs. Not for me

To call this bottom of the barrel Britpop would be an insult to the bottom of the barrel. This is the bargain bin next to the bargain bin. This is the dollar tree CD section

Another Brit pop album. This time it’s the most generic of all. No for me dawg

Why is this album on this list? It's just a nothing album, it really feels like the musical equivalent of hotel room art. I don't know what else to say. It's just a boring album released at a time when there was a million better things to listen to. WHY IS IT ON THIS LIST MAN? Every track kinda bled into the next one - there were a couple of times where I hadn't realised that two or three tracks had passed. Album sucked.

As soon as this album finished, Spotify played Doldrum by The La's next. The algorithm is too good, it can delineate meaningless FM radio Brit-slop and wanted to give me more. There are flashes of good instrumentals on a few tracks, but not enough to save it. Vocals are actually really poor on a few tracks like Re-Instated. I don't know what the point of this album was. Zero cultural resonance, why am I listening to this in current year. I tried searching through Spotify for the song from this album Since I Met You (which I enjoyed the most despite being the least streamed) and Spotify thought I meant Since I Left You by The Avalanches which is a better song by a better act. Thank you Spotify for trying to gaslight me into not listening to dull mush music.

if i ever see this robert dimery cunt in real life i will punch on with him night or day rain or shine. i do not care if hes infirm and 90 years old i will knock out the little joy left in his dead squalid brain for repeatedly subjecting me to this absolute fucking slop that some empty-skulled kiddy-fiddling self-hating guinness-drinking british slur confused with music.

How I feel being FORCED to listen to yet MORE mediocre BRIT SLOP: https://youtu.be/j_nuOyxMrMQ?si=kxYujBtkB1_HQT_E REVISION: It seems I was right to skip this album the first time. I dove to the wreck of the HMS fable and all I got was a waste of 47 minutes and the bends.

There seems to be no notable reason for this album to be on the list. A very ho hum brit pop release from the late 1990s that is a rehash of a sound from 5 years earlier in the decade.

Yeah this was a poor man's REM meets oasis. Bland

I got this exactly the day after Definitely Maybe from Oasis. I didn't really like that one. Why did we need a second one but worse?

It may be bri'ish but it doesn't hit like blur 😔

Listening to this is like eating oatmeal with no fruit, milk, or honey. Gruel. It's not offensively bad music but it has no personality and I don't understand how it's on this list.

Yikes that was pretty awful. They can't really sing and overcompensate with dense musical arrangements that don't really work. I agree with several other reviews - what's it doing on this list?!?

Utter shite

Nah, son.

Unremarkable and forgettable. I assumed it was from around 1994, but seeing it was made in 1999 makes its inclusion here even more confusing - this would have sounded dated already when it was first released.

This is not a bad album, it just should not be on a list of albums one must hear in their lifetime. It is not genre defining and not even an outstanding example of any specific genre. Like Pablo Cruise, a good band with terrific musicians and catchy songs, but not life changing. In this context I can only rate this album as a 1.

Entirely forgettable. Brit pop sucks in my opinion, even the stuff that is catchy. If this was "number 2 on both the NME and Uncut critics' poll of the albums of the year for 1999" - good lord. 1999 was a dull year in British music.

Boring. Just like this review. Doesn't even illicit a joke. Unremarkable in the literal sense.

If I wanted to listen to Oasis I would just listen to Oasis (and I don't).

Sounds like an Oasis knock off

The end of the millenium was a pretty bleak era for music, and 1999 in particular may be one of the worst years for albums - it was the year Blink 182, Santana and Limp Bizkit ruled the radio. This album speaks to the level of extreme exhaustion in pop rock as a genre. Pretty forgettable stuff - another band that sounds like a tribute act to Oasis's worst tendencies. Despite their best efforts, no amount of orchestral swells and acoustic strumming and affirmative choruses will conjure an emotion from these bland bloated songs. If they made an Almost Famous style movie for Britpop, these would be the b-sides off the fake band's singles. It's not that it's unpleasant, it's that it's barely anything at all.

Honestly, an album I feel like I heard 1000 times before. Some fun tracks but pretty rough. Might be a 2 or 3 if it came out 10 years earlier

God this is so bland. I hate Britpop. How was this ever deemed essential? Maybe the most offensive inclusion so far - this is the opposite of an album you should hear before you die. It was less horrible when I hit the folky middle section, but then straight back to C-Tier Britpop dreck

Its not like its the worst album ever, just a little done with all these unimpressive albums so 1 star, even though I could probably enjoy it more.

0.5/5 - boring, generic songs with cringey lyrics and flat vocals, one of the worst albums I’ve heard in recent memory

it’s not awful but just plain indie , i’m sure others would love this but i’d never be compelled to listen to it again .

Its what I imagine Bob Dylan would sound like if he was a Gen Xer and born in the 70s. Very vanilla 90s rock music, not indie rock, it's quite hard to describe as it has no distinguishing features. Not my thing at all, why is this anywhere near 1001 albums to hear before you die?

Competent, but typical late 90's pop. How many times do I need to hear this before I die? Daniella was interesting though. Thankfully it didn't take too long to get there.

Never heard of 'em. But, we are here to listen to new things, so I listened. It was okay, but after a while it just got to a point where I had to stop. I also checked out a couple of there other albums, but I don't think I need to come back for any more.

How many terrible Brit bands are on this list anyways? Forgettable. Knock off of Oasis.

Watered down Spin Doctors. Might be simply mediocre, but doubly offensive for even being on this list.

Gefällt mir nicht.

Should have just put another Oasis album on the thing, because at least Oasis can get credit for sounding like Oasis back during the days when Oasis was putting out bigtime Oasis albums. This one's just derivative, completely uninteresting

Not a single interesting song here

Redelijk stom

How did this make it on the 1001 list?

Beige beige beige. I did not like this at all. It riled me up on a PMS Monday morning. Nothing to it. Irritating lyrics

December 7, 2023 Bland dad rock

Cool bro. Oasis exited.

But why

Nada, vamos empeorando.

I think I've developed a Britpop intolerance. I mean I can listen to it, I don't immediately break out in hives or anything, but it's only a matter of time before the diarrhea starts flowing. I probably would have never figured this out, but because there are so many fucking mediocre examples of the genre on this list, I was eventually able to figure out the pattern and make the connection.

This album is wack AF. I want my 47 minutes back

apalling. Didn’t make it through track 3.

There’s some trend on this list to put perfectly-average examples of musical movements (i.e. psychedelia, grunge, drum & bass) on this list and call them “essential listening”. This is the BritPop example of that phenomenon.

Doesn't really do much for me to be honest. It's a solid but unremarkable bit of rock. I just don't click with britpop I think.

SHACK! this band is comfortably the worst thing called shack and i think there should be a copywrite infringement case put in about this dirge. how the fuck was anyone writing music like this in 99 and even worse how did this get into the list? i was alive in 99 and invested heavily into listening to music and generally guitar music but i have never heard this shite before.

Definitely a meh not list worthy

Never heard of this band - probably ignored the UK press a little bit in those years after the britpop hype, but this is not for me..

Incredibly mundane. The vocals are completely drowned out and the lyrics are incomprehensible jibberish. Absolutely not worth the listen. Yet another album I'm questioning how it made its way on the list. Only song worth a mention is "Lend's some dough".

Oasis but bland. Sounds no different from any other pop album of the time. Honestly don't understand why it's on here

Boring, bland, uninspired pop rock. This feels like shit a church band would play. No thanks.

I try to be open-minded about the choices this book makes that I don't like, but this was a litteral waste of time. There is no way that this album deserved a spot on this list. No chance. This is the bottom of the barrell of generic britpop and my life would have been better if I had never heard it. I hate this book.

This is so depressing, but not in a fun way. They're clearly just friends with the guy who made the list, otherwise it wouldn't be here.

Wish version of Oasis. At least guy from the band can say they are part of this book, because otherwhile nobody knows who they are...

Ordinary

Sticking to my theory that the 90s outside of rap were broadly shit.

So weird I don’t have much to say. Totally neutral musical experience not sure what I am missing here

album awful, except the last song which is a beauty

It seems H.M.S. Fable is only on the list because it is Brit-pop from the UK. It is boring as hell and the compositions are awful. So much great music is made in the 1990s. Why is this here?

most generic, boring, and repeatable music I could imagine, almost fell asleep hearing this one; 1,5

Tedious sub beatles bleating

chujnia

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Streets of Kenny, Daniella Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I was going to give this two stars and say the greatest sin this album commits is having been put on this list but then they go "Lend some dough-re-mi-fa-so what are you gonna do tonight" oh shut up eat this 1.

Eh - not my style

Ehhh, perhaps I’ll try this album again in like 6 months, as I’m aware my opinions can shift and change with time. But for right now, I did not enjoy it.

Really tedious, and just to make it totally unbearable, you can hear the scouse accent all over it. Nastiness.

It can't be cheesier

Production: 6 Songwriting: 5 Innovation: 2 Bangers: 0 Emotional response: 1 = 14 Tosh

Bit boring, bit trad.

Dont know em, didnt give em much of a chance.
